GVRNOW!

Check Out These Summer Opportunities

Most of the Snowbirds have flown, but GVR hasn’t rolled up the sidewalks!

May 13, celebrate Mom with brunch! A $25 ticket buys a meal, mimosa, and entertainment by award-winning harpist, Dr. Christine Vivova. Tickets available on ActiveNet or at any Customer Service desk. Group reservations are available to ensure same-table seating. For reservations of four or more, please call Shelly at 520-838-0156.

Under the Stars is a new outdoor cinema series that will be hosted in the courtyard at West Center, under the stars. For the first four weeks of May, members will enjoy various episodes of Universe—the visually stunning History Channel series about the stars and planets in southern Arizona’s magnificent night skies. The series will wrap up with Gravity—the full-length 2013 film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Pool Flicks return in June for a third season, this year with family friendly films to serve GVR member households with kids of all ages. Floaties and costumes are welcome at Pool Flicks and concessions are available poolside.

Both the Pool Flicks and Under the Stars programs are free of charge, with no reservation required. Your GVR card is your ticket.

On June 16, brave the heat for a poolside Dad’s Day dance at East Center. Beer and Brats (and other beverages) and live music by Sonorous are included in the $20 ticket available via ActiveNet or at Customer Service Desks.

On July 11, get out of the heat and enjoy some country rock and silly drinking songs by Arizona’s own Andy Hersey, performing at the West Center Auditorium.

July 25, join GVR’s Valley Players for a reader’s theatre romp in three short pieces that are sure to be super relatable, featuring HOA high-jinx and pharmaceutical marital adventures.

August 18, the No Sand Beach Band will play your favorite beach party tunes for a dance indoors at West Center.

September 23, join the Jukebox Junqies poolside at Las Campanas for a summer’s end party.

Letter from the CEO DID YOU KNOW?

Maintaining an exercise regimen is one of the best ways to prepare for aging in place, and for improving your daily experience. According to the National Institutes of Health, physical activity reduces the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and symptoms of depression. Physical activity has been linked to improved cognitive performance and reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that exercise improves memory, bone density, and sleep quality. It reduces anxiety, risk of type 2 diabetes, risk of cardiovascular disease, and even the risk of some common cancers. Exercise reduces arthritis pain and associated disabilities, reduces fall risks, and is essential to maintaining a healthy weight. Whether you play competitive bridge and need to keep your brain in top shape, or you just want to avoid a stay in rehab after breaking a hip, the best preventive measure is the same: move your body.

To reap the benefits listed above, adults should strive for a minimum of 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity. Examples include a brisk walk of at least 15 minutes, light yard work, bicycling at a casual pace, a light weightlifting workout, and actively playing with children. If your heartrate is up but you can still carry on conversation, you can call that moderate intensity exercise.

GVR offers a wide array of opportunities to start, resume, or build upon a daily exercise regimen. Pools, fitness centers, personal training, sports courts, clubs, and classes—all are at a member’s fingertips. Find a buddy for company and accountability and commit to moving more for a longer, happier life.

Members, each year at the Annual Meeting of the Corporation, it has been my pleasure to report on the progress made in the previous year. I am delighted to report that the “2022 Year in Review” includes a number of significant achievements.

3. Continue to improve Board functionality, professionalism, and productivity

In 2023, members can look forward to…

• A new Glass Arts Studio at Santa Rita Springs (construction is underway)

• Improving Center Security

• Evaluating expansion of Las Campanas and Santa Rita Springs fitness centers

Safeway’s parking lot isn’t the only place with more room.

We offer 40 beginning level arts and craft classes from May through September. Choose from Beginning Ceramics, Introduction to the Clay Studio, Introduction to Glass Artists Club, Introduction to Lapidary, Basic Chain Maille Bracelet, Dichroic Glass Jewelry, Learn the Torch, Precious Metal Clay Basics, Collage and Wreath Making. These classes are open to all GVR members. Several are gateways into advanced classes and joining the club.

Not to be outdone, the Dance & Music instructors have scheduled 28 different classes giving you a chance to Clog, Tap, Line Dance, and/or become a Bathtub Singer.

Seventy-eight different Health, Fitness and Sports classes include a wide variety of yoga, stretch, strength, aerobic, and even five sessions of a Shotokan Karate class.

Let’s not forget about opportunities in Languages. Nineteen different classes are offered at various skill levels for Spanish and Italian.

At our press deadline, there were many openings in these classes! Take this opportunity to let the snowbirds know, when they return next fall, that “I’ve taken that class.”

The Spring/Summer Recreation Catalog is on our website and in centers. We would love it if you enrolled in a class. We’d love it even more of you enrolled in ten classes!

Down With A Vegetarian Cobb Salad

This salad packs in some protein along with the usual fiber and vitamins. Mix shredded lettuce with purple cabbage (about four cups), and layer the mixture along the bottom of a bowl. Then add a cup of diced sweet peppers (red, orange, yellow or whatever you like), and about half a cup each of rinsed black beans and cooked corn. You can top it off with sliced boiled egg, sliced avocado, crumbled goat cheese, and a chopped tomato. Serve with your favorite dressing, and savor the flavor.

Have Fun And Get Into Shape With Buddy Training

Buddy training adds the benefit of keeping each other accountable while increasing motivation and support. Challenging yourself can be hard on your own so why not add some friendly competition with a friend?

• 60-minute session: $45 per person

• Four 60-minute sessions: $320 ($40 session per person)

New friends are welcome at the GVR Martial Arts Club

Would you enjoy gathering with others to improve your physical and emotional health, strength and balance, practicing patterns, self-defense, and discussions on the tenets of the martial arts? The GVR Martial Arts Club is where you can learn and practice Tai Chi, Taekwondo or Karate, and self defense.

Club membership is $12/year, and GVR members may drop in or try out the Tai Chi and Work Out Like a Martial Artist programs for FREE. The club meets for one hour at the Continental Vista's rec room; Tai Chi is Monday afternoons at 4:30, Tuesdays at noon, and Thursdays at 10am. Work Out Like a Martial Artist and the Self-Defense programs are scheduled as needed.

Many friendships have been created within our club, and new friends are welcome. For more details or questions, please email gvrmartialarts@gmail.com.

Play Bocce to have fun, exercise and socialize

If you have ever been bowling or played pool, then you will quickly learn Bocce, a low-impact game with no wear & tear on the body. This is a co-ed, social sport club that plays on weekdays, and has several events each year.

The GVR Bocce Club welcomes players of all skill levels, and there are always plenty of friendly faces to help you get started. You can put your bocce skills to the test and meet new people with club play throughout the year, and during the fun, annual tournament. Whether you're a longtime GVR member or a newcomer to the community, the Bocce Club is a great way to connect with others and have a blast in the process.

Club play is at Canoa Hills every weekday morning at 8:30 during spring, with Wednesdays reserved for women. For more info, email gvrbocceclub@gmail.com.

The GVR Lapidary Club’s Humble Beginnings

Back in 1965, GVR rockhounds seeking out our beautiful Arizona minerals led to the establishment of the GVR Lapidary Club at the East Social Center. Lapidary is the cutting, shaping, and polishing of slabs of precious and semi-precious minerals to create the cabochons used in jewelry. Although the club has expanded far beyond lapidary to include silversmithing, metal forming, fused glass jewelry, casting, chain maille, wire wrap, precious metal clay, and much more, the name of the club has endured, as well as the fellowship and camaraderie of its members.

Visit one of the club’s shops at Desert Hills, West Center, or East Center to check out the beautiful hand-crafted jewelry for sale. You can learn the same skills in the Lapidary Club classes listed in the GVR Course Catalog!
