Looking Forward to 2024
2023 was an amazing year for recreation lovers in Green Valley, and 2024 is starting off with a bang. As of January 1, Canoa Hills patrons are enjoying new views, updated flooring and paint, and completely remodeled restrooms and locker rooms. As of January 5, Glass Arts Club members are enjoying a space designed for their use. The Abrego North recreation room is again available to all members by reservation and for drop-in use between reservations.
and restrooms accessible to GVR members from indoors and out. The noisy plastic dart board will be replaced with a couple of bristle dart boards, and staff are looking into a member recommendation for bumper pool. A GVR Board subcommittee is working on a business plan for the café side of the upper floor. The lower floor construction and parking lot renovation will take about six months. So, what about all those fun activities in the meantime?
Last year, GVR’s fitness program was rejuvenated by the addition of several new personal trainers, the resumption of free fitness orientations, new course offerings, and the completion of the beautiful fitness facilities at Desert Hills. In the coming year, the locker rooms at Desert Hills will be renovated with the possibility of a steam room to complement the dry sauna.
Two billiards tables have been moved to the West Center lobby. Foosball is at Canoa Ranch. A big screen TV and the café seating have migrated to the renovated Canoa Hills lobby a half mile south where members are welcome to continue their drop-in activities and ball game parties.
The upper floor of the Del Sol Clubhouse opened for billiards play in March of 2023, with steady additions of darts, foosball, TVs, and café tables. By the end of the year, Thursday Night Football was celebrated routinely by 30–40 people, a sixfoot table was piled high with games and puzzles, and a Saturday morning foosball group had formed. In 2024, the lower floor of the clubhouse will be built out to house billiards
Staff will pursue three other projects in 2024: Converting the auditorium at Canoa Hills to a gymnasium, club space expansion at West Center, and refitting a portion of the West Center lobby to provide consolidated membership and customer services. If plans and construction bids are agreeable to the Board, a gymnasium at Canoa Hills will be a boon to those year-round residents who curtail their outdoor activities from June to Continued on page 6

Letter from the President
Each year, the Member Assistance Program (MAP) helps GVR members in need pay their annual dues so they can stay active and contribute to their clubs and social groups. The MAP program is funded primarily through the generous donations of GVR members like you.
Welcome to 2024 at GVR! The Board took December off from meetings. We plan to have a work session in January and a regular meeting. We hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year.
The fund has reached the $22,000 goal and is still climbing! GVR members, clubs, and the community have made an impressive impact. GVR clubs and individuals donating on behalf of the clubs are making a difference. Thanks go to the GVR Woodworkers, Table Tennis, Glass Artist clubs, Canine, Photography, Singles, Square and Round Dance, Swim, Tennis, Travel, Valley Players, Volleyball, Pickleball clubs, and the GVR Clay Studio. GVR members who donated while paying their dues have so far raised $9558! And the White Elephant tipped the scales with a generous donation of $7000! It’s not too late to donate! The MAP fundraising campaign is running through Wednesday, January 31. Make your donation today at gvrecfoundation.org.
As you have heard, the Board approved a contract for the downstairs at the Del Sol Club House and the contract has been signed. We all look forward to seeing this building completed so the members can enjoy the wonderful views. We have had good feedback on the social meeting place and watching the football games there. We are looking into a café of some kind to be added to Del Sol. Not sure if it will work out financially but it is being studied so I will keep you updated on the progress of this idea. The Board will be completing the yearly evaluation for our CEO, Scott Somers in January. It has been an exciting year with lots of things happening. Also, we’re happy to welcome Steve Mendoza as GVR’s new Facilities Director. Steve comes with years of experience in facilities maintenance and project management. If you have comments or concerns or just want to let us know how things are going at GVR send us an email at board@ gvrec.org. Your emails are sent to all Board members and to the CEO. Thanks to all who attend our meetings and those who send us emails with their questions and concerns. —Marge Garneau, Board President

Hello, 2024
JANUARY 2024
Remember, “You are never too
old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
—C.S. Lewis
Let this be the year when you try something new! Research shows that adults need to keep their minds active. There are mental health benefits to learning something new, like the improvement of brain health and memory, the fostered connection with others, and mental well-being and happiness. GVR classes are designed to benefit members and be something positive to look forward to doing. With plenty of class options, let this be the year when you sign up for that class you’ve been curious about trying. So, say goodbye 2023 and hello 2024! Let GVR’s leisure education offerings help with those new year resolutions. Have you made some fitness goals? Did you want to be more creative? Is now the time when you try a new sport? Check out GVR’s Winter 2024 Recreation Catalog and see all the available classes. If you’re not sure where to start or hesitant to commit, take a peek at the classes that allow drop-ins.

Cover story, continued… October. The gym would host basketball on a 60-foot court, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and an indoor walking track 1/16 of a mile long. Three dance clubs will continue their activities there: the Square and Round Dance Club, the Line Dance Club, and the Saturday Night Dance Club. Badminton will be offered on a drop-in basis each Sunday afternoon starting January 7. A few rackets and birdies will be available, but members are encouraged to bring their own gear. On March 1, plan to attend the annual GVR Showcase (formerly Fit-n-Fun Day) at Canoa Hills. Clubs, instructors, and GVR program staff will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate activities; and food and music will round out the event. The GVR Showcase is a great opportunity for members who want to learn more about GVR’s offerings, and prospective members, too. This event is open to the public and is always very well attended. Mark your calendar! If approved, the club space project at West Center will expand the existing Woodworkers shop and the existing Artisans’ Shop. It will also create a new studio capable of consolidating at least two of the three existing Lapidary and Silversmithing studios. The total cost of this ambitious project is currently estimated at $2 million and will require a vote of the members for approval. Through 2024, staff will continue to work with Seaver Franks Architects to develop plans and cost estimates. Also at West Center, plans and cost estimates are being developed to create a consolidated member services and customer services center. If approved, this project will mean a fresh and vibrant introduction to GVR for new members and easier access for existing members and returning tenants. Moving membership staff out of the Administrative Offices will create space for the IT team, currently housed at Desert Hills. The vacated space at Desert Hills could then be repurposed for club use or a meeting room. Finally, a year-long project is scheduled for culmination on January 24: the long-awaited new website will launch. Members can look forward to an updated look, easier navigation, and some features that are sure to please. Included are a searchable calendar on the homepage, an “alerts” banner on the homepage where unplanned closures and pop-up events will be posted, and the ability to view the weekly room schedules online. Find a room for drop-in use or confirm where your meeting is scheduled from the comfort of your home. Thanks for a great year in 2023 and here’s to another in 2024!
