The updated and modernized Canoa Hills center re-opened its doors on January 1, welcoming members back to a refreshed and refurbished space. The renovation project was undertaken to renew the center’s flooring, interior walls, bathrooms, and locker rooms—including showers and the addition of bathing suit spinners. The result is a center that is more welcoming and functional than ever before. The work was more challenging than initially anticipated so the renovation took longer, but the efforts have resulted in a member hub that promotes health, wellness, and social connection.

The new and improved center features a host of impressive amenities, including a well-equipped fitness center, an outdoor pool with a recoated deck, a large auditorium, bocce and tennis courts, and a picnic area. The pool is perfect for both swimming laps and lounging in the water. To further enhance the GVR member experience, drop-in table tennis continues on Saturdays from noon–2pm and Sundays from 8am-noon with a new time on Wednesdays from 6–9pm. Also, badminton drop-in has been added on Sundays from 1–5pm. Members can now enjoy a friendly game of table tennis or badminton with friends and family, and also hang out in the lobby to socialize with a game of cards, a puzzle, a board game, and watch sports and movies on the big screen TV. Letter from the President

GVR movies now have a $2 admission fee to cover rising costs.

The Board started 2024 with the yearly evaluation of our CEO, Scott Somers. We are pleased to let you all know that Scott has agreed to continue as our CEO.

Unlike the movies you watch in the privacy of your home, films shown at GVR are subject to licensing fees. Those fees recently increased so GVR could purchase a license that allows us to include the film titles on posters and in this and other publications. On average, those fees are $450 per film. With recent attendance levels, the movies cost GVR about $2.25 per person. The modest $2 admission price helps offset that cost. Arts and Entertainment staff and volunteers thank you in advance for bringing cash only and preferably, exact change. Find upcoming movie titles on the website, in the eblast, and on the centerfold calendar in each issue of GVR Now!

Del Sol is shut down for completion of the lower level and parking lot. This will be a wonderful social gathering place for the members and we hope you all go see it once it opens again. There is a fiscal affairs subcommittee looking into food options at the Del Sol. Staff is evaluating outside vendors, coffee and light food, as well as setting up a café in the building and running it with GVR staff. We are working on some proposed bylaw changes. Some will clarify the existing ones while others will change them and will be on the ballot for your vote. You have probably seen the security cameras are being installed around GVR. I remind you they are not linked and only record with a refresh every 30 days. There are several members who have stepped up for the Board seats this year. More information on the candidates can be found on the GVR website and in a special pullout in the February GVR Now. Watch for the forums and if possible, come ask them your questions. If you have comments or concerns or just want to let us know how things are going at GVR, send us an email at board@gvrec.org. Your emails are sent to all Board members and to the CEO. In recent years, what single GVR event do you think has had the highest member attendance?

SUNDAY

Almost 400 members crowded the West Center Auditorium on Saturday, January 13 for a one-hour lecture by our friends and neighbors from the Whipple Observatory. Staff had to bring out additional chairs! The folks from Whipple will be back on Saturday, February 10 with Sebastian Gomez of the Space Telescope Science Institute, a Supernova expert. There will be hot coffee and snacks for sale, and we’ll be setting up 500 chairs. We recommend arriving early, doors open at 9am for the 10am start.

Sanchez of the Autonomous University of Mexico who is not only an expert in high-energy and gamma-ray astrophysics but also part of the VERITAS collaboration. VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is located at Whipple Observatory.

MIT is the Principal Investigator of TIERRAS, which is an ultra-precise photometer (telescope) designed to characterize nearby terrestrial exoplanet research. TIERRAS is now located at Whipple Observatory.

GVR’s Leisure Education program isn’t confined to the classroom. At times, it fills auditoriums with lectures by the GV Gardeners, local government agencies, and healthcare providers.

Open to members and nonmembers alike, the afternoon will showcase everything GVR has to offer. Sign up for NEW small-group training! Resistance Band Small Group Training is a low impact, safe, and efficient way to build strength, improve flexibility and support balance without weights. The class is oriented toward those seniors who have recently done little or no regular exercise. Mondays & Wednesdays, 9–10am Starts February 5, four weeks $120 Parkinson’s Functional Fitness 4 Life consists of functional movements that target different aspects of fitness, such as high intensity interval training, resistance, flexibility, and balance training. Research shows that exercise and physical activity help maintain and improve mobility, flexibility, balance, and quality of life, as well as manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
