FITNESS AT GREEN VALLEY RECREATION

Fitness means something different to each of us. For some, being able to walk unassisted to the mailbox and back is a worthwhile accomplishment. Others have extreme ambitions. Regardless of the specifics, most GVR members have a goal in common: keep moving.

Fitness centers are GVR’s most popular amenities. If you’re wondering what all the dust and racket is about at Desert Hills, it’s about the whopping 76% of members who report using GVR fitness facilities. The new fitness center at Desert

Hills is expected to ease pressure at Las Campanas and the small center nearby at Canoa Hills. The adjacent fitness studio will be home to a variety of movement classes.

Beyond brick and mortar, GVR is investing in fitness programming. In December, GVR hired a new Fitness Coordinator. His top priorities are to improve the turnaround time on equipment repairs, resurrect the fitness orientation program, and expand personal training options.

Letter from the COO DID YOU KNOW?

Pima County has a dark skies ordinance. Night time lighting is regulated to “preserve the relationship of residents…to their unique desert environment through protection of access to the night sky.” Ordinance 2021-14 is also intended to supports local astronomical activity.

The lighting code regulates lumen limits, shielding of lights, direction of light cast, location of lighting fixtures and in some areas, lighting curfews. The lighting curfew applies to the Pickleball Center because it is within a 25-mile radius of the peak of Mt. Hopkins where the Whipple Observatory is located.

Thanks to the dark skies ordinance, Green Valley night skies are spectacular and stargazers are richly rewarded by just a short night drive away from the community.

“What a great day, it was magical!”

“This was a great event!!”

“GVR offers so many opportunities!”

Apparently, the GVR Showcase was an event about exclamation points.

On Thursday, January 26, GVR members enjoyed another return-to-normal after a three-year pandemic hiatus. Club volunteers, program staff, and local non-profit representatives turned out with literature and demonstrations of what GVR has to offer. The house was packed at Las Campanas with new, long-time, and prospective members who toured the tables and attended programs. The programs included a new member orientation that resulted in a couple deciding to deed-restrict their home and become members. Naturalist Vincent Pinto entertained and informed folks about the unique flora and fauna of the Sky Islands. The Green Valley Fire Department showed up with a truck to ogle. The GVR Photography and Cycling clubs did demos and handed out prizes from bike pumps to framed and matted art photos. Spectators filled the auditorium for the GVR Line Dance Club demo. Square dancer, pickleball and table tennis players were on hand to show off their stuff. But it wasn’t all fun and games. The table for the GVR Board Nominations and Elections Committee got steady traffic from members learning about volunteer governance opportunities. The Canine Club ended the day with eighteen new members, and the Canadian club gathered two pages of contact info from folks interested in hearing about their upcoming activities.

The GVR Showcase (formerly Fit-n-Fun Day) is an annual January event. If you missed it this year, keep it in mind for 2024. Even if you can’t fit anything new in your schedule, the convivial hubbub is a joy to experience. Regrettably, my to-do list meant I could only stay for the first hour, but the tired grins on each of the staff’s faces as they returned at the end of the day spoke volumes.

Staff and members alike tend to focus on their usual activities or their usual GVR centers. Events like the Showcase are valuable opportunities to take in the truly impressive scope of the work and fun that is happening across the campus and around this community every day.

Real-time pool, fitness, and pickle-ball usage is now posted on the website. Find the link in the jump-to section of the home page at gvrec.org, or scan this QR code:

REMINDER!

I want to thank all the club, governance, and non-profit volunteers who once again pitched-in for GVR members, as they do week-in and week-out. You made the day.

THE BENEFITS OF LIFELONG LEARNING

Lifelong learning is about personal fulfillment. It recognizes that we have an ambition to explore, learn, and succeed which encourages us to improve our individual quality of life and self-worth. The benefits are:

Renewed self-motivation: Sometimes our world becomes routine doing things just because they need to get done. Figuring out what inspires us puts us back in control.

Recognition of personal interests: Finding enthusiasm in new projects or directions can reduce boredom, and make life more interesting and fulfilling.

Improvement in other personal skills: While we’re acquiring new knowledge, we’re also acquiring other valuable skills. For example, when we learn to draw, we’re also developing creativity. That type of skill development can improve our social skills, problemsolving, and adaptability.

Improved self-confidence: Becoming knowledgeable in something new can increase self-confidence.

Fitness Orientations

GVR is once again offering orientations to fitness center equipment. Our goal is to help members become familiar with the fitness center they plan to use for exercise. We want to help you navigate and utilize the fitness room safely and effectively. Orientations will be conducted by the GVR Fitness Coordinator, Lee Smith. Lee brings a lifetime of fitness education and fitness facility management to the GVR team. He has earned Specializations in Corrective Exercise, Performance Enhancement, and Senior Fitness through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Orientations will include:

• Start and stop, and change settings on cardio machines

• Seat height adjustment and weight selection on machines

• Discussion of proper form on machines

• Rules & regulations of the fitness room

• Opportunity to have any questions answered

• How to access personal training packages

Due to the backlog of demand, starting in February, fitness orientations will be offered twice a week until enrollment tapers off. After February, some evening and weekend sessions will be scheduled to accommodate folks with busy weekday schedules.

Expect a combination of sit-down time in a meeting room and hands-on time with equipment. Members are welcome to attend any session, but we recommend attending at your preferred fitness location if possible, so you are oriented to the specific equipment offered there. There is a limit of six participants per session to ensure plenty of personal attention. Registration is required. Email LeeS@gvrec.org (or call 520-495-5897) to register.

Tennis Anyone?

Join the GVR Tennis Club for exercise, practice, improved hand-eye coordination, and club camaraderie. The skill levels range from beginners to “advanced” players, and the club offers two enriching activities to all active GVR members:

Quick Start, East Center, Fridays noon–2pm: This program gets participants playing tennis quickly and is adapted for the “young at heart” with slower, softer balls. Drop-in, no sign-up necessary and you can come as often as you wish. Call Jon Otto 520 648-4219 or Carl Johnson 520 399-4781.

Monday and Wednesday Tennis Clinic, Desert Hills 2–4pm: “Technique Focus” is supervised practice with play simulation for fundamentals of shot making. “Doubles Focus” will guide you toward becoming a better doubles player. There is no charge, but donations at courts are encouraged. Club members may sign up online at the GVTennis.com. While the clinic is a

benefit of GVR Tennis Club Membership, non-club members may contact Rich.Walton@gvrtennis.com or 520-333-2532 for availability.

The GVR Tennis Club plays Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at West Center from 8am–12pm.
