1989 Bake House: A Delicious New Chapter at Del Sol
For Rose and Randy, opening the 1989 Bake House at GVR’s Del Sol Clubhouse has been a labor of love—one deeply rooted in a passion for food and community. “I’ve been baking since I was a tiny tot,” Rose shared, her excitement unmistakable. “I come from a long line of chefs who have all carved out their own bit of local fame as the ‘best of.’ Food, ingredients, and quality have always been at the core of who I am.” After pursuing culinary school instead of a career in medicine, Rose honed her skills at local resorts before dreaming up a bakehouse that showcased high-quality products. The year 1989, significant as both Rose’s birth year and the construction year of her first home, inspired the name. “When we were approached about Del Sol, we knew it was the perfect fit. Green Valley is such a beautiful place, but it was missing something in the food scene.”
Since its opening, the 1989 Bake House has quickly become a community favorite, and Rose believes its success stems from a combination of location, service, and quality. “We make 90% of our items in-house, and the difference is obvious when you taste them. We’re not perfect, mistakes happen, but we’re committed to consistency and serving good food and drinks. That’s what keeps people coming back.”
On Sunday, January 12, Rose and Randy hosted an exclusive menu tasting for fourteen lucky GVR members who won a lottery contest, eight Board Directors, and CEO Scott

Somers. The event featured a delectable spread of brownies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, avocado toast, croque-monsieur, tuna salad, roast beef sandwiches on focaccia, and refreshing drinks. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees raving about the flavors and quality.
The excitement continued on Monday, January 13, with the official grand opening. The first ten guests received free drinks, and the first 25 were treated to a complimentary cookie. Members and guests alike celebrated the occasion, reinforcing the 1989 Bake House as a must-visit spot for delicious bites and community connection.
So, what menu items have members buzzing? “Our cinnamon rolls, brownies, and blondies have been a big hit,” Rose said with a smile. “Those recipes have been years in the making, and seeing people obsess over them makes us so happy.”
The community’s warm response has been incredibly meaningful to both Rose and Randy. “People have told us we’re exactly what the community needed. It’s so wholesome, and it makes me emotional. Local support can make or break a business, and it’s a blessing to feel so welcomed.”

Did You Know?
The front patio at Del Sol Clubhouse is now dog-friendly. While we’re still adding to the mix of permanent and temporary furniture, you and your furry friends are welcome to enjoy the space any time. Please remember to bring a fixed leash for your pup—flexi or retractable leashes are not allowed. Dogs must also not be left alone on the patio at any time. So, grab your leash, bring your pup, and relax on the new patio with a refreshing drink or snack.
Letter from the President
What an exciting time for GVR. We not only opened our first drop-in center at Del Sol Clubhouse but also welcomed the 1989 Bake House. They have lots of fun ideas and the food they provided us at the open house was great! They have limited hours and serve breakfast and lunch items. Hope you visit them!
The staff is working with subcontractors to figure out what is happening at Desert Hills pool. As of right now, it does not appear there is a leak in the shell but that some of the “ancient” pool pipes have been leaking. Hopefully we will know what has to be done soon. We remind you that all our pools are aging—some not so gracefully. The Board is working on setting aside money to replace/repair these as need arises. They have been maintained but a pool life is 45 years and we have some pushing this number.
We are looking at expansion at West Center. The Artisans’ Shop is getting more space since billiards has moved to their new space at Del Sol. We are looking into what the costs would be to expand the lapidary area and bring the Desert Hills Lapidary group down to West. The staff are working with lapidary for a design and are going to move forward with architectural drawings.
Staff is also working on a redesign of the Desert Hills locker rooms. They have not been updated in a long time, so they will be expanded and have a new look. This should be happening this year.
Thanks to all who attend our meetings and those who send us emails with their questions and concerns.
—Marge Garneau, Board President
