COOL OFF WITH A MOVIE! Any day now,

triple digits will appear in the forecast. The Arts and Entertainment team has prepared a treat for members brave enough to endure the June heat: Pool Flicks! Starting June 10, free movies will be shown on four Thursdays at the Desert Hills pool, at about 7:30pm. No need to register or pick up tickets. We’re bending the rules a bit for these events. Bring your “floaty,” enjoy some concessions, and come prepared to shout out the lines to summer movie favorites!

Member/Guest $15 General Public $20

Jason Love is one of today’s hardest-working comedians. Jason has appeared on HBO, Comedy Central, America’s Got Talent, and Dry Bar Comedy. His funny stories and guitar bits make him a favorite for corporate events around the country. Jason has performed at clubs from the Laugh Factory in Hollywood to Caroline’s on Broadway. He performs overseas for the troops and on the seas for cruise lines. His clips are played daily on Sirius XM.

Andy Hersey is an Arizona based singer/songwriter who released his third full-length album Tell Me All About It in 2016 on Reposado Recordings. His set of songs is acoustic based and eclectic. Country rock, silly drinking songs, a love song or two, mix in a bit of broken Spanglish, and there you have it, says Hersey. Events are held at the Green Valley Recreation West Center Auditorium at 1111 S GVR Drive.

Doors open at 6:30pm.

When Thunder ROARS... Southern Arizona’s MONSOONS can begin any time now!

Per National Lightning Safety Institute guidelines, GVR pools and spas are evacuated before lightning is five miles away and reopen 30 minutes after the last observed thunder or lightning. At GVR, when one pool is closed for weather, all pools are closed. GVR staff use the Weather Bug app to stay

informed about storm proximity. Storms can develop suddenly! Please do not wait for staff to arrive to close the pool—when

thunder roars, go indoors!

Check pool status at GVREC.org/pool-status/ or scan the QR code on the right, using your smartphone’s camera. Pool status is also available on the GVR app available in the App Store and on Google Play.

EAST CENTER TO GET A NEW POOL. Demolition of the old East Center pool has begun! The pool was built in 1964 and was closed in February of 2020 when a considerable loss of water was detected. Water was escaping through a mended crack in the basin of the pool. SURVEY

As of May 27, more than 1600 surveys have been submitted via RETURN the US postal service or online. Focus groups have been asked a set of questions similar to those in the survey. Some repeated answers have been: GVR offers members terrific value for dollar, an incredible variety of options to suit every interest and level of ability, well-maintained facilities, and responsive field staff. GVR needs to stop partisanship and bickering at the Board level, improve communications, expand/improve the fitness facilities, provide unstructured social spaces, reduce member

When asked, “What’s the next big thing?” members offered a lot of fun guesses and inventions, including golf cart polo! Among the more likely suggestions were martial arts, competitive swimming, disk golf, tech-based recreation, bike trails, and activities for grandkids. The information-collection stage of the Strategic Planning process will wrap up in early June, after which the analyzed results will be delivered to the Board. Goals will be drafted by the end of the month.
