WELCOME to GVR’s first consolidated catalog of recreation opportunities—another efficiencies initiative. Classes, performances, dances and events, fitness programs, and “drop-in” amenities are all now collected in one publication, reducing print, design, and distribution costs. Nearly 50% will be saved on print costs alone.
This spring and summer, GVR is offering more poolside parties and more free outdoor films. In May, enjoy astronomy programs on the big screen Under the Stars in the West Center courtyard. In June, beat the heat with Pool Flicks, this year with a kids’ night for our young GVR families and visiting grandchildren.
New in GVR’s leisure education program are Elementary Italian and Shotokan Karate classes. Don’t overlook these opportunities: Lapidary, Clay, Glass Arts, and Ceramics Clubs are all offering introductory classes over the summer, granting access to these high-demand clubs.
Do you have ideas for classes or events GVR can offer? Let us know! Email hotline@gvrec.org.

Yin Yoga
Do you want to relax the mind and body, sleep better, and gain more flexibility? Try Yin Yoga. The essence of Yin Yoga is to surrender and be passive in your poses. This focuses on postures that lengthen the muscles surrounding the hips and back. Students typically hold postures for 3–5 minutes to lengthen the connective tissue that surrounds the joints and increase its elasticity. The experienced instructor will give many options for students with medical restrictions. SUPPLIES: Wear comfortable clothes, bring a water bottle, a yoga mat, two yoga blocks, straps, Mexican blankets, and (optional) a bolster.

Lichens are a classic example of a biological partnership between two (or more) organisms that depend on each other for survival. Lichens are among the oldest and toughest organisms on the planet. They adorn trees, rocks, and buildings; and they come in a range of colors. They are consumed by many animals, especially in winter when food is not available. In short, they are extraordinary.

The Fascinating World of Fungi
Fungi are remarkable organisms. They are critical to the health of most terrestrial ecosystems due to the relationship between them and plant roots. They are essential as decomposers, breaking down complex molecules into smaller units that become nutrients in the soil. Fungi can be beautiful in shades of red, orange, green, purple or blue. Some are also deadly. This class explores the wonderful world of these organisms, which share more of their DNA with people than with plants.

JULY Andy Hersey
Andy Hersey is an Arizona based singer/songwriter who released his third full-length album “Tell Me All About It” in 2016 on Reposado Recordings.
Songwriting has always been a part of Hersey’s life while working other trades: ranch hand, horseshoer, truck-driver, construction and raising a family on Southern Arizona ranches.
He now makes his living playing steady shows in Tucson area establishments and a road trip now and then.
“This set of songs is acoustic based and eclectic. Country rock, silly drinking songs, a love song or two, mix in a bit of broken ’spanglish’ and there you have it” says Hersey. “The goal is to have friends rather than fans and to make music a living without being in the music industry”.

In addition to leisure education and arts & entertainment events, GVR offers options for fitness, aquatics, and drop-in recreation.
spring/summer 2023 RECREATION CATALOG 21
GVR’s six fitness centers are equipped with a unique collection of cardio and strength-training equipment (see chart). Some of the smaller centers have limited space for floor exercises. All centers are equipped with a variety of resistance bands and stretching devices.
This spring (2023), GVR’s smallest fitness center will become GVR’s largest. The expanded fitness facility at Desert Hills will include an adjacent multi-use fitness studio where members will be offered classes and the opportunity to “drop in” to use the room between scheduled activities.
Free fitness orientations are routinely conducted by certified personal trainers at all GVR fitness locations. Look for the schedule at GVREC.org, or pop into any fitness center to find the schedule posted near the cubbies where members stash their personal items.

Personal Training
GVR offers three levels of fitness training to help members get the most out of their fitness center experience.
1. Attend a free fitness center orientation at the center you plan to use for your exercise workout. The orientation includes an assessment of your fitness level, a tour of the cardio and strength training equipment, and a group orientation to the adjustments and use of the equipment. Schedules and registration information for orientations are posted in each fitness center.
2. A complimentary 30-minute personal training consultation with a GVR Personal Trainer is offered to those who wish to have a personalized fitness program designed for their goals and any medical needs. Contact the GVR Fitness Coordinator (LeeS@gvrec.org) to discuss your goals and be assigned to one of the trainers for your consultation.
3. GVR contracts with five certified personal trainers to assist members in pursuing their fitness goals. A variety of personal training packages are available:
• Introductory Personal Training package—$129
Two one-hour appointments to design an individualized cardio and resistance training exercise plan
• One-on-one training
60-minute sessions
• Four sessions—$240
• Ten sessions—$495
30-minute sessions
• Eight sessions—$270
• Twenty sessions—$600
• Small group training sessions are also available with a ratio of one trainer to up to six people
• Buddy Training (two person, max)
Why not have a little fun while getting into shape? Buddy training adds the benefit of keeping each other accountable while increasing motivation and support. Challenging yourself can be hard on your own so why not add some friendly competition with a friend?
• 60-minute session: $45 per person
• Four 60-minute sessions: $320 ($40 session per person)
In April and May, GVR will run a trial program. Lee Smith, GVR’s Fitness Coordinator and certified trainer, will spend two hours each morning in three different fitness centers. Lee will be available at no charge to answer questions, help members with their form, and make suggestions as requested. Starting April 3, find Lee in the following locations between 6am and 8am:
Las Campanas: Mondays & Wednesdays
Canoa Ranch: Tuesdays & Fridays
East Center: Thursdays & Saturdays
