Getting Started- Jewelry Basics

Basic Chain Maille Bracelet

BEGINNING LEVEL-Chain Maille is the art of adding links of a chain or jump rings together to make a pattern for jewelry. You will learn 2 patterns in forming bracelets. You will learn about wire gauge, hardness, and shapes used. Material fee of $40 paid to instructor at first class. Materials include: jump rings, clasps, and tools to keep. Basic Wire Wrapping for Jewelry

BEGINNING LEVEL- Prerequisite: for more advanced wire wrap classes by the GVR Lapidary Club. You will learn basic wire wrapping techniques and complete three projects -- pendants and earrings. Learn about metal gauges, types of wire, tools and supply sources. SUPPLIES: Bring jewelry pliers you have and a fine-tip sharpie. Tools will be available for purchase. Dichroic Glass Jewelry

BEGINNING LEVEL- Prerequisite: for more advanced Dichroic Jewelry classes offered by the GVR Lapidary Club. Students will assemble 3 pieces of fusible glass and dichroic glass. These pieces may be used for pendants, earrings, etc. This class will give a basic knowledge of glass fusion as well as dichroic glass capabilities. No prior experience is necessary. No tools needed. This is a two-day (separated) class. The class includes cutting, design, fusing and finishing. Material fee of $35 includes glass, bails, etc. is paid at the first class. Lapidary Class

BEGINNING LEVEL- Learn the steps to cut, grind and polish stone slabs to make cabochons for jewelry. Class requires standing for most of the sessions and walking to work on the different equipment. SUPPLIES: Wear old clothes and close toed shoes as water is used at most stations. This class is required for Lapidary club members to use equipment independently. Learn to Solder

BEGINNING LEVEL- Prerequisite: Learn to Use the Torch OR recent annealing experience. Please note that this class is a prerequisite for more advanced silversmith classes offered by the GVR Lapidary & Silversmith Club. Students will learn the basics of torch soldering used to make jewelry. This will allow students to begin developing the skills and confidence needed to fabricate jewelry from silver and other metals using a torch. Learners will use the process and physical steps of soldering/fusing metals together to form jewelry. Class projects include: 1) Forming, soldering silver earrings; 2) Make/design a sterling silver pendant by sweat soldering (tinning) shapes onto a backplate. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisite: Learn to Use the Torch class OR equivalent experience and GVR Lapidary Club membership. Learn to use die-cutting equipment to punch many shapes: circles, hearts, squares & teardrops. Learn to safely use the 20- ton hydraulic press and other forming tools. Have fun experimenting with textures to create a fun-to-wear bracelet. Materials are copper and sterling silver. This class is required for club members to use this equipment independently. Learn to Use the Torch

BEGINNING LEVEL- Prerequisite: for more advanced classes offered by the GVR Lapidary & Silversmith Club. Learn forging and annealing techniques (acetylene/air torch) to create a cuff bracelet, earrings, and pendant. Foremost will be safety introduction on using the torch to anneal, or soften, the metal before forming. Inspiration by examples of copper, brass and silver jewelry by GVR Lapidary Club members. Lost Wax Casting

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisites: Learn to Use the Torch class or verified experience, as well as Lapidary Club membership. This two-day class will introduce the student to the steps of Lost Wax Casting to create jewelry. The process of casting by the lost wax method allows for the reproduction of multiple copies of an original piece of jewelry. The student will learn the following steps: Creating or producing an object to be cast, spruing the wax object to be cast, investing the object into a casting flask, oven burnout, casting the metal, cleaning the object after it has been cast. Metalsmith Tools - Design & Form Jewelry

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisite: Learn to Use the Torch class OR recent experience with jewelry torch AND GVR Lapidary Club membership. Use hammers and forming tools to make a forged copper pendant, heavy wire bracelet and silver earrings by annealing and shaping. Give your jewelry interest using the Lapidary Club specialized tools and equipment. Have fun making your own creative jewelry to wear or give as gifts. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Silversmith 1 - Bezel Set Stone

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisite: Learn to Solder class OR experience soldering silver AND approval of instructor. This class is a prerequisite for advanced silversmith classes by the Lapidary Club. Tools and materials furnished to make a bezel cup - a pendant to wear at home! Wear old clothes, closed toe-shoes, and tie back long hair. Three Easy Rings

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisite: Learn to Use the Torch class. How to Solder class may be useful. Lapidary club membership is required. Practice safely using Lapidary Club equipment; acetylene air torch and metal-forming tools. Learn to size and make three styles of rings. You may choose to solder rings (it’s a good practice) or form without soldering. Copper and sterling provided. No tools required. Please wear closed-toe shoes and cotton apron. Note to anyone with a pacemaker - there is equipment in the Lapidary Club centers with strong magnets, you may consult your physician if concerned. SUPPLIES: Please bring a lunch. Wire Bundle- Wrapped Polished Stone Pendant

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL- Prerequisite: Completion of the GVR Basic Wire Wrapping Class or equivalent experience. In this class we will use square and half-round wire to create a mounting for a cabochon pendant. Polished cabochons provided. SUPPLIES: Bring jewelry-making tools (pliers, flush-cutter, ruler and fine-tip sharpie). Tools available for purchase. NOTE: Requires working with pliers and can be difficult for arthritic hands. CERAMICS

Ceramics Beginning

This course is a prerequisite for joining the Ceramics

Club. Students will learn how to prepare green ware and bisque, apply undercoats and glazes and other techniques. Students will complete 3 projects, included in the material fee, to take home. Fun With Sculpture

Prerequisites: Must be a clay studio member to take this class. Beginners to advance students will learn the art of sculpture. Wild Animal Sculpture

KUMIHIMO

This is the art of traditional Japanese braiding dating back centuries. Using a kumihimo disc or marudai, the direction and placement of cording results in a variety of braids. Many different types of cording and beads can be used to complete a variety of projects, including bracelets, necklaces, keychains, lanyards, and chokers, etc.

The Wonder of Melted Wax Painting

Painting with hot tools; iron and stylus, not brushes. Great for a beginner or a brush up course. A6 size card stock is used to learn abstract and landscape methods, and to master the use of the hot tools. Once learned any size painting can be done on almost any surface. Wax allows for many different expressions such as, mixed media, photography, embossing, mono printing, image transfers to name a few. Flower Arrangements for Fun I

What to do with the flowers you buy or grow in your garden? All design styles are covered from vases to high style. Each week you will take home a professionally designed arrangement. You also will learn care, handling, and the names of different flowers and foliage along with basic design techniques. You are guaranteed a fun time with each class. Week 1: Vasing flowers in bud and large vases. Week 2: One sided arrangement. Week 3: Vegetative (looks like a growing garden). Material fee of $45 (3 arrangements) for container, fresh flowers, and foliage will be paid to instructor at class. SUPPLIES: Bring a sharp thin-bladed paring knife.
