New Spaces Considered for Clubs and Fitness

In December, the Board of Directors instructed staff to pursue concept sketches, ballpark

estimates, and a tentative timeline for two elements found in “Plan A”—a multi-faceted proposal to provide or enhance space for five clubs and build an expanded and updated fitness center. One element of “Plan A” calls for the development of a West Center Arts Complex that would have at its heart a multi-club space built primarily on the existing shuffleboard courts. That building would house the Lapidary, Glass Arts, and Metal Working clubs. Consolidating the three lapidary studios will eliminate redundant equipment, reducing maintenance costs for the club and GVR. The need for fewer monitors, more interaction between members, and a space designed specifically for the craft are all anticipated benefits to the club. Freeing up 4,000 square feet of space at East Center, Desert Hills and West Center will provide opportunities for meeting spaces all members can use, and a long-awaited expansion for the woodworking shop. Where did this idea come from?

West Center Shuffleboard Courts

It is not entirely new. Consolidating lapidary studios has been under discussion for 20 years. In 2016, a Master Plan recommended a multi-club complex. In 2018, members strongly supported creating space for the Metal Working Club on existing GVR property. When the Canoa Hills Clubhouse renovation estimate came in at $2 million for two clubs (Glass Arts and Ceramics,) exploring alternatives that could benefit more members brought staff and the P&E committee back around to these concepts. A second element of “Plan A” also uses existing GVR property to provide an amenity that members and the Master Planning architects identified as a high priority: An up-to-date, well-equipped fitness center. In this case, the defunct shuffleboard courts at Desert Hills are slated for repurposing. The new fitness center would consolidate the two cramped fitness rooms at Canoa Hills and Desert Hills into one space that is much larger than the two combined. If built, users could look forward to views of the pool, easy access to the sauna, and ample space for stretching and floor exercises. Staff estimate that 1700 or more GVR members will benefit from Plan A, and assume that the clubs involved will see their memberships grow as more classes and workspaces are available to accommodate curious members. The 160-member Shuffleboard Club will still have 25 courts to enjoy, including a dozen at Abrego South. In late February, concept drawings, ballpark estimates and a tentative timeline for these two elements of the broader plan should arrive. If projections seem manageable, members will be asked to weigh in.
