New Spaces Considered for Clubs and Fitness
In December, the Board of Directors instructed staff to pursue concept sketches, ballpark
estimates, and a tentative timeline for two elements found in “Plan A”—a multi-faceted proposal to provide or enhance space for five clubs and build an expanded and updated fitness center. One element of “Plan A” calls for the development of a West Center Arts Complex that would have at its heart a multi-club space built primarily on the existing shuffleboard courts. That building would house the Lapidary, Glass Arts, and Metal Working clubs. Consolidating the three lapidary studios will eliminate redundant equipment, reducing maintenance costs for the club and GVR. The need for fewer monitors, more interaction between members, and a space designed specifically for the craft are all anticipated benefits to the club. Freeing up 4,000 square feet of space at East Center, Desert Hills and West Center will provide opportunities for meeting spaces all members can use, and a long-awaited expansion for the woodworking shop. Where did this idea come from?
West Center Shuffleboard Courts
It is not entirely new. Consolidating lapidary studios has been under discussion for 20 years. In 2016, a Master Plan recommended a multi-club complex. In 2018, members strongly supported creating space for the Metal Working Club on existing GVR property. When the Canoa Hills Clubhouse renovation estimate came in at $2 million for two clubs (Glass Arts and Ceramics,) exploring alternatives that could benefit more members brought staff and the P&E committee back around to these concepts. A second element of “Plan A” also uses existing GVR property to provide an amenity that members and the Master Planning architects identified as a high priority: An up-to-date, well-equipped fitness center. In this case, the defunct shuffleboard courts at Desert Hills are slated for repurposing. The new fitness center would consolidate the two cramped fitness rooms at Canoa Hills and Desert Hills into one space that is much larger than the two combined. If built, users could look forward to views of the pool, easy access to the sauna, and ample space for stretching and floor exercises. Staff estimate that 1700 or more GVR members will benefit from Plan A, and assume that the clubs involved will see their memberships grow as more classes and workspaces are available to accommodate curious members. The 160-member Shuffleboard Club will still have 25 courts to enjoy, including a dozen at Abrego South. In late February, concept drawings, ballpark estimates and a tentative timeline for these two elements of the broader plan should arrive. If projections seem manageable, members will be asked to weigh in. For more complete information about Plan A and a peek at Plan B, email Hotline@gvrec.org or inquire at a Customer Service Desk at Canoa Hills, Las Campanas or the West Center Box office.

FREE PLANNED GIVING WORKSHOP 1. When you moved to Arizona, did you update your estate plans? 2. Do your spouse/children need assistance managing inherited assets? 3. Are you satisfied with the charitable gifts included in your estate plans?
How can you make a change in the world after you are gone? Many people decide to leave a portion of their estate to charity. People often decide to leave money to charities for things that have touched their lives, or the lives of their loved ones. Consider the charity’s goals, mission statement and level of financial transparency when making your choice. Some people want to split their estate between a charity and loved ones. Experts suggest specifying a percentage of your estate to go to charity. This way, no matter how large or small your estate winds up being, your beneficiaries will still get the percentage that you planned for them. Another option is to name a charity as the beneficiary of your life insurance plan, IRA or 401K. When you’ve decided what you want to leave behind and to whom, the most important thing you can do is enlist help from an estate planning professional. The GVR Foundation can work with you to make certain your wishes will be honored.
4. Are you aware of the amount you may leave to others tax free? 5. If you answered “NO” to any of these questions, your estate plans may deserve more consideration and possibly an update. “Planned Giving” is a contribution that is arranged in the present to be allocated at a future date.
The GVR Foundation is holding a free Planned Giving Workshop on Wednesday, February 9, from 10am until noon at the Ocotillo Room at Las Campanas. To register for the workshop, visit gvrecfoundation.org and click on the REGISTER button.

The Hot Club of San Francisco is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France with style and panache. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. Featuring the amazing violin of twice Grammy Award winner Evan Price and a swinging rhythm section. To hear the ensemble live, or on any of their 11 albums, is to be carried back to the 1930s and the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris and the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 20 years. Acoustic Guitar hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent international and national tours – from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival – The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive.
