Colour

As a little girl, I was always told to like the color pink. Apparently, the color pink is a feminine color. This is based on society’s stereotypes. For every birthday party, all my birthday cakes were colored pink. I wanted green colored cakes because green is my favorite color. I wanted blue colored cakes because the color blue always stood out to me.

The color pink is the ‘universal color of love’. Self-love and the love you have for others. Pink represents harmony, affection, friendship, inner peace, and approachability. I then realized why the color pink had always revolved around me. The color pink represented something I desired for myself or something I gave to others.

Colors have always been important in my life. At home, school, and work. Colors helped me with everything such as organization and memorization. But the color pink always “comes around”. Maybe it is because I am a female. This is what I thought at first, but then I started to engage myself into researching about ‘What colors represent?’ Well, each color has a meaning. I had no idea.

As time went by, I stopped expecting what I thought others had to provide to me (according to what the color pink represented). I started giving what I desired from others to myself. The love I wanted- I taught myself how to ‘self-love’. This process took me a long time. It took me a long time because I had to start believing my own compliments before I believed anyone else’s. Yes, it took a long time but I accomplished it.

Blue Magazine Volume 2- 2020

The affection I thought I needed from my friends and family, I started to teach myself how to be okay with being alone. Yes, it got lonely. But now I love my quiet time and my private time. I learned a lot from myself. Just from giving myself quality time. The toughest goal for me to accomplish was ‘inner peace’. I struggled with this goal the most because I stressed myself out about everything and anything. I would never be able to relax. To help myself get through this I started to think of pink ‘things’. For example, a beautiful sunset. It’s a mixture of pink, orange, and yellow. The pink stood out to me, it just relaxed me. I started to get pink pencils or pink cases. Anything pink to keep me sane or relaxed. The color pink motivated me to be emotionally stable. In a way, the color pink was soothing for me.

I never thought I would have such a strong connection with colors. But I know I am not the only one. Colors are important. We want our houses a certain color, our decor, phones, shoes, and clothes a certain color. Because these certain colors fulfill the aesthetic or theme we want in our lives. The colors you pick represent something to you if you pay close attention to the colors you choose. Colors are very important. Let’s not ignore them. Think of the color pink for a little while.

Me and Your Ghost. I shivered as I stared at a blank expression. Moving from side to side trying to see my own reflection and all I see is a ghost.

Rantings of a deranged mind By: Samyra Francois- Ramkisoon

My former self, despite the looming pain of emptiness. There I was-I stood no chance in hell against the blurriness I call life. Losing myself and completely letting the facade continue in the presence of no one. I have taken a leave of abscence but I never left. I reflect back and I see nothing but bittersweet me. Writing [6/19, 1:03 PM] Sam I Am: I reflect upon the baleful ravages of my skin, who has seen much more expensive silence. Scarred arms held outward touching the dying energies of the one who is devoured. The cataclysmic fires burn my womb as I perish like an extinguished pyre. Drained by impatience.

7

Blue Magazine Volume 2- 2020

Writing [6/19, 1:08 PM] Sam I Am: “Let’s pretend my body is a canvas, your tongue is the paintbrush & your skilled fingers are the palette. With each stroke you take me, running your fingers through it coloring as you go, making it into something masterful, that only you and I know. You’re on the verge of creating the best master piece of your life by molding my body in whatever you can imagine. Imagination was never your strong suit so you failed. Failed at every turn until there was nothing left to mold. Just a carcass in the wind”.

D Re A M

By: Katlen Guzman

Sometimes we have dreams that are considered peculiar. They can frighten us, make us worry, and even wonder about everything that seems ‘crazy’ to many critics. But sometimes we have dreams we can not just ignore. Sometimes people do not remember dreaming. They just sleep and wake up. source image: ibtimes

This makes sense. But sometimes our subconscious is trying to warn us or tells us something we need to know. Our subconscious infoms us through our dreams, in ways many consider ‘odd’.

Here are some dreams that I’ve had and they have a special connection to my waking life.

Dreaming of bugs... There was time where I had to go to summer school for one hour a day. Then, I had too get home and sleep for one hour. After, I would get ready for work. I was not enjoying my summer. I lost many of my friends. I was stressed out. This was a lot for me to handle. I believe it was a lot for my subconscious as well, because I started to have repetitive dreams. These dreams involved a massive amount of bugs. I never understood why this kept happening. After a little while I started to research what this meant. I was amazed by the answers I found because I realized other people had the same dreams or similar. Dreaming of bugs can mean you are overwhelming yourself. Dreaming of bugs can also be a symbol of negavtive thoughts and feelings. I realized I needed to slow down. I took a long break from everything. I never dreamed of bugs again.

Dreaming of fighting... I do not know about you, but I have dreams where I am fighting someone, but I just can not hit them. It feels like a struggle in a dream. I had no clue what this dream represented. I would dream of myself fighting during a dark time in my life. After I realized dreaming of bugs had a meaning, I started to believe all my dreams did. I researched what it meant to fight in a dream. Dreaming of fighting represents inner struggle. I was struggling . I was fighting my trauma. But fighting was not fixing anything. Dreaming of getting bloodwork done ... One night before bed, I was thinking about a current situtation that was affecting me. I could not get it off my mind even if I tried. I eventually got Dreaming of being pregnant... my rest, but I had a painThis dream scared me the ful dream. The dream was most. First, I thought I was odd, I dreamt of getting pregnant. But that did not bloodwork done. I felt the make sense. It took me pain. But when I actually about five dreams later to get my bloodwork done finally give in and research in real life, I am never in what this meant. pain. Dreaming of getting blood drawn from your body means that you regret something and you are in a state of worry. My current situation was affecting me so badly because I was thinking of regret. I was regreting what I had done. It is insane what dreams can mean, when the visuals do not relate to the message.

11

Blue Magazine Volume 2- 2020

Dreaming about being pregnant can mean you are expecting a change in your life. It can also mean you have many goals you really want to achieve. Many professionals state that pregnancy dreams relate to a growing/development phase in your waking life.

Sometimes We Are Friends By: Katlen Guzman

Also, I did not tell them riends come how I felt because I did not and go. This want to lose my friends. But I did not have to tell is what my mom would them anything because we tell me. She would tell me this just stopped talking. Then, just in case I had a fight with a few months later they my bestfriend. It made me feel would text me when they better as a child. But as I got needed something. I still older, I really did not like my did not say anything because I knew we would not friends consistently leaving talk again. my life. I also could not control people staying or leaving my life. I started to believe that maybe I was the problem. But I could not wrap my head around that reason. I knew the problem was not me. I did not tell any of my “friends” how I felt.

As an adult I still believe friends come and go. Friends are the people that will dissapoint you most. This can be because of many reasons.

I could talk to my friends, but I chose not to. I was paranoid they would tell how I felt to someone else. Which was the case 90 percent of the time.

My reason was, people just never stuck around. I did not need friends, I just wanted them. But friends come and go.

I do not think the older you get the less friends you have. I believe the older you get you start making better choices. I learned this “the hard way” as the saying goes.

Horror movies at their best By: Katlen Guzman

Horror movies do not only need to be watched during Halloween. Horror movies can be watched all year long. Many people enjoy watching scary movies because they know they will be scared. The thrill is exciting to many. To be honest, not all scary movies are scary. They are just promoted to be scary. But some horror movies really scare people and cause them to be paranoid after they have watched the movie. I did not believe this was true until I became scared leaving my feet uncovered. In my mind I believed soemthing would pull my feet as I slept. But, here as some amazing horror movies I just can not stop watching.

19

Blue Magazine Volume 2- 2020

A nighmare on elm street

This movie may have caused you nightmares. But why is it such a popular classic movie we can not stop watching? Because it is one of the best thriller/ horror movies ever created. Back in the 1970, in Los Angeles, newspapers were being printed and sold to many communities. These newspapers were informing the people of L.A. about Southeast Asian Refugees, who, after fleeing to the USA because of a terrible and traumatic war and genocide, were experience terror nightmares. Wes Craven, was inspired by these events he decided to create a movie with the concept of dying in your dreams. All the movies portray a back story of what happened to Freddy Kruger (the nightmare killer). Which then develops the story of the protagonist and all other characters in the movies. The backstory of the actual concept is a quick attention grabber and interesting to watch a movie be produced based on a nightmare.

all the halloween movies When you think of Halloween you can think of the National “holiday” if you actually consider it a holiday or you think of all the Micheal Myers movies that have ever been made. All the Halloween movies tie together to demonstrate that evil can not die. And this is how the series of Micheal Myers came about. The moral and message the writers and director are trying to produce may not be considered “deep” but it is a message that is true. John Carpenter the co-writer and director of the movie, put a lot of his real life experiences in the movie. We may not think these kinds of situations really occur. But they do. Simply because some people are evil. It is an interesting message to think about, maybe some of us Halloween series watchers had a different interpretation of what the movie’s theme was. But now we know!

NYC TRAIN

By: Katlen Guzman

Only 4 stops together. I saw him and he saw me. We did not speak to each other because we were strangers. But we continued to make eye contact and eye glances at each other. Performers came on the train, they were dancing and one fell. We laughed together. I was going to say something to him, like “hey” but that would just be awkward. I thought the stereotypical way and said to myself, “he is the male, he should approach me.” When this is false. Maybe I should have approached him, so when I got the courage to do it, he stood up and walked out. That was his stop. He turned around and saw me. He smiled and winked. I smiled and laughed. He was beautiful and he seemed to be a really good person. It’s sad to think I won’t see him again. But that’s how life works.

21

Blue Magazine Volume 2- 2020

Two weeks later, I had to take the train again. I actually forgot about him because it was a funny encounter. But I actually saw him again. I could not believe it. I was in shock because this doesn’t happen on NYC trains. He saw me, he smiled and laughed. I waved. He came over to where I was seated. He told me, “you are the girl from the train like a couple weeks ago right?” Nervously I replied, “yes”. I believe he was just as surprised as I was. He asked me where I was headed too, I told him I was going to eat lunch at my favorite cafe. He told me he had work. There was one stop left until we had to part way again. When I was getting off the train, he got off with me. He asked me “can I come?” I replied “what about work?” He quietly said “I own the company”. He joined me for lunch.

He told me it was so odd how we met on the train. I agreed. When we got to the restaurant we ate, talked, laughed, and smiled. It was so weird because he is a stranger. But he didn’t feel like one. We didn’t ask for each other’s name. He started to talk about his life, I started to talk about mine. Our situations were very different. He was sick. He told me he had a type of cancer that was too complicated to explain. I did not know how to react because I just couldn’t handle the news.

After that lunch together, I didn’t see him. We exchanged phone numbers, we would talk everyday. Then one day he stopped answering me. I was worried. I thought maybe something happened. I took the train. I did not see him. I knew it was too good to be true. You don’t just meet someone like that. As I approached the diner. There he was, standing there waiting for me. He told me “I knew you would be here”. He smiled and winked. I smiled and laughed...

He laughed, he told me he knew it was weird of him to tell me. But I told him I don’t mind bad news. He told me he’s been alone for a while, both of his parents are back in their country and he’s here alone. My heart ached, I felt hurt for someone I did not know. He told me he’s been getting better. He told me his last session of chemotherapy was tomorrow. I told him I was deeply sorry, I would never be able to understand his pain and struggles. The lunch was a great distraction. For the both of us actually.

What is rape? Rape is when a predator forces another person to have sex against his or her will. Rape is also sex without consent. Many know this already, but people are still being abused and violated everyday. What people do not understand are the consequences and trauma caused on the victims. But these predators have abused many humans that they have become incoherent of the consequences.

Why victims do not speak up? Victims are scared to speak about the experience. This can be because of many reasons. The victims can be manipulated, threatened, and tricked. The silence these victims carry hurts them. Sometimes people do not want to speak up because they do not want to hurt the predator. It may not make sense to you, but put yourself in the victims shoes. Once you speak up everyone will know. This can be a lot to handle for someone who has been traumatized. 31

Hurt.

Effects of sexual violence Being sexually abused in any way can have psychological, emotional, and physical effects on a survivor. Rape is rape and it should not be covered up. Any human that feels like they were violated, was violated. These actions taken by the predators can lead the victims to experience depression, heavy flashbacks, PTSD, and hypersexuality. These effects can be long term and short term. No human should experience this. These effects will cause multiple problems with relationships of all kinds. The trauma will haunt the person. Please be aware of what you say and what you do.

The average number of rapes and sexual assults against females and children alone is 250,000. This does not include males over the age of 10. The numbers continue to go up everyday. What can we do to stop rape? We can educate all children from a very young age to always speak up if something inappropriate happens. We can also teach all children not to touch anyone else inappropriately.

Many parents do not speak to their children about sex. That is normal because they are young. But the less they know, the more curious they can be. This can lead the children to experiment without knowledge and understanding which can cause harm unintentionally. P.S. It is okay to be scared. It is okay to feel hurt, alone, and sad. You can always reach out to professionals for help if you are worried to tell your family. Please do not allow someone else to destroy you. You are beautiful, unique, amazing, and you are you. Trauma does not define who you are. It is what you been through.

Stop abusing humans.

KEIMURIE is a black-owned clothing brand that consists of Unique up-cycled pieces and custom designs. Heavily inspired by New York Streetwear, and its Bold and Innovative take on fashion. Still in its freshman year the mission of this brand is focusing on sustainability and producing quality garments. While still sticking to being gender- fluid; creating clothing that is inclusive of all genders.

Designing and creating has forever been a passion of mine. I love coming up with new concepts and ideas that push gender norms. My love for fashion started very young. From cutting up socks so I could make outfits for dolls, drawing every chance I got, and taking in all my hand me downs. I always knew I wanted to pursue fashion design as a career because expressing myself through clothing was all I knew.

Taking action against the perception that men can’t wear women’s clothing because it’s “degrading” or they’ll be viewed as less of a man. KEIMURIE strives to be a brand where people can feel comfortable being who they are as well as expressing themselves through clothing. Life as a young designer in New York can be challenging. Especially when you’re not given the opportunity to really grow in your trade. I was lucky enough to have gone to a school that offered fashion design as a major. There I was introduced to the world of fashion, and was able to build on my skill.

Hi, I’m Levaughn Murray and my brand consists of exploring fashion through visuals. Since I’m new to the fashion design world I wanted to combine my background in illustration and bring it to fashion by making stunning visuals. My love for fashion started when I started to feel like normal illustrations weren’t enough .

Although I love the visual arts I still felt a void and that was where my interest in fashion design peaked. I wanted to create wearable art. So far as a new , learning designer, I am super inspired by NYC since spent majority of my life here. As I constantly enter the city I am hit by amazing works of art in all shapes and forms which continues to inspire every chance it gets. Ultimately my creativity boils down to the sheer diversity of the city.
