DESTINATIONS INTRODUCTION Gay naturism or LGBT naturism (where naturism is generally equated with nudism) concerns a lifestyle of gay people in which nudity, especially in a communal context, is viewed as natural, positive and healthy.

While mixed-sex naturist clubs and resorts in the United States date back to the 1930s, gay naturist organizations did not emerge until the early 1980s.

The first nationwide organization to promote gay naturism was formed in 1980 called The Naturist Society (TNS). In contrast to the more conservative American Sunbathing Association (ASA) (which in 1995 was renamed the American Association for Nude Recreation, or AANR), TNS openly welcomed diverse groups of people and was a loose association of special interest groups (SIGs). From its inception TNS received almost daily inquires about a SIG for gay naturists.

PURPOSE OF THIS E-BOOK There are literally hundreds of traditional mixed-sex, family-friendly (predominantly heterosexual) naturist clubs and resorts worldwide, but for many gay men, they either feel uncomfortable attending these or even rejected at some of these places - some to the point of asking personal questions about ones marital status or stating they prefer a “50/50 balance of male/females” (in other words, too many gay men might throw the balance out or threaten the ‘family atmosphere’).

In 1983 Gay and Lesbian Naturists (GLN) was formed.

GLN had its first gathering at the Summit Lodge in Rockbridge, Ohio in 1985. About 60 members, all of them men, attended.

Annual GLN gatherings grew steadily in the late 80’s and early 90’s. In 1992, the group reorganised and was renamed Gay Naturists International (GNI). Although GLN had been founded with the intent of attracting both gay men and lesbians, it had been a de facto all-male organization as there had never been any significant lesbian participation in the group. The new GNI became gender specific in its mission. GNI also became an umbrella organization for networking local gay naturist clubs.

For gay men who love naturism and love to travel abroad finding a clothing-optional or naturist place to stay that is either totally men only, LGBT mixed, or very gay-friendly can sometimes be challenging. There are dozens of websites worldwide and not all gay accommodations are as easy to find. Depending on the country, they could be listed on MisterB&B, AirBnB, Purple Roofs, Gay-Sejour, Gay Travel Asia, Spartacus Travel Guide or any number of others. If they have their own website, it doesn’t mean they are easy to find if they are not ranking highly in Google or have not created their website with enough Keywords to be found easily on the Net.

The 1990s saw the beginning of annual gay naturist gatherings on a large scale. The annual GNI Gathering, held each August in rural eastern Pennsylvania, remains the largest gay naturist gathering, attracting about 800 gay naturists.

In this series of 5 e-books, hundreds of hours of research has been done compiling together as many gay clothingoptional Bed & Breakfasts, Guesthouses, Resorts, Gay Campgrounds, nudist beaches, gay naturist cruises and men’s venues worldwide into 5 e-books.

Since the 1990’s, gay naturism and gender-specific tourism has spread across much of the globe creating a growing market of naturist destinations and clothing optional accommodations specifically for men.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! The content in these e-books were up-to-date at the time of production. However, over time businesses close up, new ones open, some move address or change what they offer. I have compiled the content based on the available information and photographs I could get at the time. If you notice a listing that is either not correct, has changed in some way, has closed or moved, the website URL is no longer working, or if you own a business listed here that you’d like removed, please use the contact form on the website:

Generally mixed-sex naturist camps or resorts are not included into this E-book as there are hundreds of them worldwide and not all are gay-welcoming (there are other guides to find these). These guides are specifically intended for the gay naturist traveller. However, in some cases mixed-sex places have got a mention if they actively promote ‘gay-friendly’ on their websites.

Not every single nudist beach is listed here either. There are a selection of the ‘official’ nudist beaches, and those noted as being ‘gay beaches’ or that attract a gay crowd.

The same applies to gay mens venues such as saunas and cruise clubs. Listed are some of the best venues or those noted to have naked days, naked events or naturist outdoor areas for nude sunbathing. Smaller venues, or those where clothes or fetish wear has to be worn (ie, not naked) are not necessarily listed in this e-book.

SYMBOLS KEY Next to each listing there are symbols to indicate whether they are for men only, LGBT mixed, mixed-sex, gayfriendly or are a private rental. Here are the symbols and the meanings:

Not every country in the world is noted as being a ‘naturist destination’. In some countries nudity in public areas including beaches is illegal. In some countries even homosexuality is illegal or is not tolerated. And some countries are just too darn cold! For these reasons, these countries are not listed in these e-books.

LGBT Mixed means the places welcomes everyone from the Rainbow community.

There are many campgrounds in the USA that are LGBT Mixed, but the majority by far is still gay men.

Gay Friendly means the place is usually gay owned and generally has a gay clientele but they are not specifically for men-only.

Women may be present.

In order to illustrate these e-books and make them attractive, engaging and useful, we have used images that are freely available on the internet or we have taken directly from the official websites. In most cases the words are also copied from their official websites or have been written to the best of our ability using the available information to hand.

Men Only, means just that. You won’t find, women or children here. In most cases the places that are listed are gay owned intended for gay men (with the exception of some segregated spas or Onsens).

Private Rental means the place is usually gay owned but only has one guest room, meaning you either get the place to yourselves or its just you and the hosts.

These properties may also advertise to the general public and so will accommodate anybody who wishes to book there. They are not necessarily men-only properties.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Peter, and I live in Rotorua, New Zealand with my partner Mike.

I discovered the joy of naturism when I was about 20 years old when I visited a nudist beach for the first time. Once I got used to feeling comfortable in my own skin and not feeling embarrassed or body conscious being naked around others, I was hooked! 25 years later my partner and I still enjoy naturism, whether this be at home running our men’s clothing optional Bed & Breakfast, at a nudist beach, going for nude bush walks or travelling abroad exploring other places to get naked.

As I’m also a Graphic Designer I thought I’d combine my skills of design and my love of naturism and put together this series of e-books to help inform other gay men who enjoy naturism and travel to explore other parts of the world where naturism can take place, often in countries you’d never think naturism would be possible.

I hope you find these e-books useful for you next ‘nakation’.

I will endeavour to make yearly updates to these e-books to keep them current, removing any places that have closed up and adding in new clothing optional properties or venues as they appear.

PCAN men’s nudist group PCAN (The Pacific-Canadian Association of Nudists) is a nudist organization for gay and bisexual men located in Vancouver. PCAN is for men of all (legal) ages and body types to socialize in the nude.

We are located at 308B 17Ave SW. We are a private men’s club and membership is required. If you do not have a membership, memberships can be purchased upon entrance, PHOTO ID is required.

The reviews of Goliath’s are not great. It may not be the nicest of bathhouses, but if you find yourself with a hankering in Calgary, it is your only option.

They do have single and double rooms available for 8-hour periods with 2-hour extensions for an additional fee. Rooms are very basic. The ‘David’s Room’ is the only room with a TV.

Cedars Campground Serving the gay, lesbian, bi, trans and queer community, Cedars is situated in 130 unspoiled, partially wooded acres atop the Niagara Escarpment. Cedars Campground is proud to be one of the largest and longest operating campgrounds in North America serving our community. This campground has a very mixed crowd of LGBT people, men and women, therefore the swimming pool area and all communal camping areas and recreation halls are all textiled (no one goes naked). However, for naturists, Cedars offers a designated clothing-optional area of the campground where you can enjoy the feeling of being at one with nature with no clothes (by the looks of things, it would appear that this has been set up as a designated area intended for men). This area has a some pathways through the bush that opens up into an enclosed lawn area with some sun-lounger platforms and picnic tables dotted around – a haven away from the party people in the main camp.

Playa Escondida Beach While you are busy planning your trip to Buenos Aires, the local boys in the city are planning their Summer escape to Mar del Plata.

Playa Escondida is a tranquil clothing-optional beach 35km or so south of Mar del Plata.

This beach has an official designated nudist section with extensive dunes near where the historic Querandí lighthouse is.

Praia do Abricó, Grumari, State of Rio de Janeiro Praia do Abricó is a nude beach located in Grumari, a sub district of Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, in the western part of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is currently the only beach that permits the practice of naturism in the city. It is officially affiliated to the Brazilian Federation of Naturism (FBrN).

The beach is tiny and if the tide is high the sand can be reduced to almost nothing.

Gay men prefer to gather at the end and straight men and couples stay in the first half.

By car its 1 hour 30 minutes from Copacabana.

Praia Olho de Boi, Buzios, State of Rio de Janeiro Praia Olho de Boi is the only nude beach in Buzios, it is one of the smaller beaches located on the eastern shore of the Buzios peninsula.

Its also the most popular official nude beach in Brazil for gays.

This beach is quite remote and you’ll need a decent 20 min walk to get there. The trip begins at Praia Brava beach, where at the right end of the beach you’ll find a trail that will take you up and over the hill. Bring good walking shoes, upon arrival you must get rid of all your clothes! It’s clothing non-optional.

Praia de Galheta, Florianopolis, Catarina About 10 minutes walk from Praia Mole is the sweeping bay of Praia de Galheta – Beautiful beach for naturism, quiet, low waves, fine sand.

Great beach, nice views, good walk to get there, a must for nature and naturism (and for the goings on that happen in the bushes behind the beach, especially for gay men).

Warm bay waters, broad beaches, well-stocked kiosks, clothing optionality, lack of screaming kids and families, extensive trails and rock areas to explore, and plenty of naked men, all make for a wonderful day.

Praia do Pinho, Santa Catarina Praia do Pinho is one of many beautiful beaches in Balneário Camboriú, a highly touristic city in Santa Catarina.

Praia do Pinho is one of the first official nude beaches in Brazil and one of the most popular.

Barra Seca beach, Espirito Santo State Barra Seca is the only nude beach in Espirito Santo State. It is located in the municipality of São Mateus, 60 km north of the city of Linhares and 200 kilometers north of Vitória, on the north coast of the state. It is managed by the NatES - Naturist Congregation of the State of Espírito Santo.

At Barra Seca you must be nude if you wish to be in the family area (the main part of the beach). Around the periphery of the beach, nudism is optional (so I guess if you don’t want to be around families and kids its probably a good idea to venture away from the family area).

Massarandupió, Bahia, Costa dos Coqueiros Massarandupió is located about 50 miles from Salvador on the magnificent Coconut Tree Coast of Bahia (Costa dos Coqueiros), near other paradisiacal beaches such as Costa do Sauípe and Praia do Forte.

The beauty of Massarandupió with its slender coconut trees, pristine sands and clear water is not enough to describe the mesmerizing effect of the Coconut Tree Coast on the senses.

Again, a mixed crowd, many straight couples (as with all these beaches). Police sometimes patrol this beach, so be on your best behaviour or even cover up if you see uniforms approaching.

Rio de Janeiro / Notable nude beach

Abricó Beach, Grumari (Rio de Janeiro) The only nudist beach in Rio de Janeiro is situated in the environmentally protected area of Grumari and is approximately 1.5 kms long.

The beach has crystal clear waters, surrounded by beautiful mountains and tropical vegetation. Abricó Beach is in Grumari, Barra da Tijuca in the West Zone of the city, in the Grumari Municipal Park biological reserve.

The beach is between Prainha Beach and Grumari Beach.

While not exclusively gay, Abrico is gay-friendly and a nudist beach (madatory on weekends!), so feel free to go around in your birthday suit.

Off the beaten track, it is accessible through Grumari, which is at the far side of Barra da Tijuca.

Abricó is a vast sandy beach backed with some woods/bushes and lots of rocks (perfect cruising grounds. Lots of cruising occurs as you head to the far end of the beach into the rocks). Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to go. There are lots of gorgeous guys there; you won’t be disappointed. Cruising, nude sun bathing, nude swimming and lots of naked fun; what else could you ask for?

How To Get There: You need a car to get here from Rio as it’s past the south end of Barra da Tijuca (past Recreio). Roughly a 50 minute drive from Ipanema without much traffic. Drive into Grumari Park, go past the small surfing beach (prainha) and Abricó beach access is then as soon as you see parking again going down the hill. There are parking watchers who will take a few reals from you to “watch” your car while you’re at the beach.

Head down the stairs and walk left past a beach bar and around the big rocks. You’ll see a sign that you’re at naturist beach Abricó as you get to those rocks. It’s 3km from Recreio, so if you take a taxi there, be prepared for a good hike back to the nearest town to find a return taxi if you didn’t arrange a pick up in advance.

Hours / Best Times: After 1130am the guys start heading for walks in the rocks.

Anse Tarare nudist beach Beach Tarare is the most beautiful of Guadeloupe beaches and is the only official nude beach on the Island. It is situated on the Eastern point of the Island (Anse de la Gourde, Pointe Tarare).

Tarare actually has all the advantages of a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters, powder white sand and palm trees.

Access to the beach is via a short walk on a well maintained path accessed behind the Chez Michel restaurant parking lot. There is ample parking. The beach area itself is small and the prime shaded spots under the palm trees are the best spots on the beach. The water is sometimes rough but certainly swimable.

You’ll often find a mix of French tourists, gay and straight couples along with a handfull of local Guadaloupian men. Everyone keeps to themselves for the most part.

A great beach to get away from it all, relax, swim, get some sun and get completly naked!

If you want to enjoy nude sunbathing, stay on the beach. If you re up for more then go to the bushes. Mainly gay men, but the straight couples around are pretty care free and just enjoy nude sunbathing. This beach tends not to attract families with kids because of the things happening in the bushes (the hills with trails full of vegetation are where men are cruising).

Résidence Club Caraïbes If you don’t mind staying in a mixed-sex Naturist Resort, then Résidence Club Caraïbes is a good choice. For one thing, it only has 6 bungalows, so it is fairly small and quiet. Being a fairly liberal Island, gay men are welcome to stay here (there is nothing on the website that says otherwise). Bunglows are spacious and there is a communal swimming pool and Jacuzzi. This place is just 15 minutes drive to the beach mentioned above. Very handy!

Playa Luna (english Moon Beach) is the name popularly known Horcon’s nude beach. This is the only nude beach that exists in Chile.

Access is via the south coastal road leading from Viña del Mar and Concon, on the north

by Route from Papudo and Zapallar and on the east from Route CH-5 North via Nogales.

The name “Playa Luna” is because that is the association with the nudist group of the same name, whose creator is René Rojas, pioneer of organized naturism in Chile, who along with a group of nudists were organized and named the beach, for then create the “Playa Luna Club”. The site is known since the ‘60s as a meeting of some hippies and pioneers nudists, but only in 2000 was officially recognized as a nudist beach.

Playa Luna emerged as a need to have a proper place where to settle after the old Cau-Cau Beach, also located in Horcón, was invaded by condominium developments during the 1990s.

The Cau-Cau nudist began migrating further north and some settled at the end of the long beach of Horcón, on the beach formerly called “playa la Iglesia” (english The Church Beach), naming it “Playa Luna”.

Every summer “Playa Luna” is visited by hundreds of visitors, which make this place the meeting point of the Chilean nudists. Like all beaches of Chile, is public and freely accessible.

In Playa Luna, there is freedom, there is no discrimination by sexual orientation, race, social status, sex, political or religious status, and the atmosphere is extremely liberal.

Tayrona Nudist Beach, Santa Marta Tayrona National Park on Colombia’s stunning Caribbean coast has Colombia’s only noted nudist beach.

By far the most recognisable and iconic of Tayrona’s many beaches, Cabo San Juan is the most popular one for (textile) tourists in Tayrona due to its stunning setting, ample accommodation options, and the fact that you can also swim there – something that isn’t common in Tayrona due to the area’s treacherous currents. Two gorgeous white sand beaches that seem to mirror each other, overlooked by the famous hammock hut on a small hill jutting out into the sea, Cabo is visually stunning and justifiably popular.

A short walk through some arid, scrubby forest from Cabo San Juan is Tayrona’s nudist beach.

It’s not exactly bursting at the seams with naked beachgoers and is easily long enough to find a quiet section if you do fancy stripping off away from potentially prying eyes. It is also a truly lovely beach. Surrounded by jungle-clad mountains, the waves can be wild – lifeguards are on hand to indicate whether swimming is allowed – but the scenery is wonderful and well worth the short walk from Cabo.

Can I swim here?: YES and NO – There are lifeguards here to answer that question, and they will often accompany you and wait in the shallows while you take a quick dip. Make sure to ask.

Directions: Follow the little sandy path west from Cabo San Juan’s second beach (or take a detour from Pueblito out the other way) and you’ll reach (in only 10 minutes or so) a stunning long stretch of sandy beach with virtually no-one on it except for maybe a dozen or so nudists.

Playa Manchas Gay Beach If seclusion is what you want then Playa Manchas may suit you. This is now a popular ‘gay’ beach to loose your tan lines. To find this beach, from the main road walk or drive to Ronnie’s restaurant and keep going until the road ends. The first beach is Playa Vacas, then to the right, as the trail goes farther, you will find Playa Manchas. Another way is to turn off the main road from Tico Tico, drive or walk toward the ocean and take the first left, at the Y-intersection take the left route going down.

Then go to the very end of the road at the top of the hill. After this point, the road is not passable by car. Walk to the beach at the end of the path, keep right.

Montezuma

Playa Grande beach, Montezuma Playa Grande is beautiful beach in Montezuma, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It is often confused with another famous beach of the same name located near Tamarindo.

The only way to get to Playa Grande is to walk 30-minutes north from the beach of Montezuma, so there are no cars, no quads, no police, and few people.

Many travelers looking for a nude beach to swim, surf, boogie board, or sunbathe nude spend their days here. It’s also a great surf spot, with fairly large waves. Die-hard surf addicts who live in Montezuma carry their surfboards thirty minutes each way every day.

Playa del Amor Beach Zipolite is one of the highlights for a gay or nudist visitor to Mexico. It is located along the infamous bays of Huatulco, just south of Puerto Escondido. This small bohemian village has been popular with Hippies, Europeans and nudist since the seventies.

For several years Zipolite has captivated national and international tourism, for the freedom it allows with its nudity on the beach – it has been popular with Hippies, Europeans and nudist since the seventies.

The beautiful approximately 2 km long beach is fronted by a collection of beachside restaurants and hotels. Nudity is entirely accepted and normal on the entire beach as are displays of affection between same-sex couples.

The most gay section (and the most nudist) is Playa del Amor, reached by walking to the far east side of the main beach and then climbing a stairway up and back down to the small hidden beach. This is the most popular and the most cruisy spot for gay men (although it is somewhat mixed).

About the same time that taking photos of people ‘planking’ became popular, taking nude photos at the site of Macchu Picchu also became a ‘thing’. Since 2013 authorities have been clamping down on people doing this.

Penalties have ranged from being held in custody, having to pay hefty fines or having all of your holiday photos on the camera deleted.

Lima Annual Naked Bike Ride Each year, hundreds of nude men and women take to the streets of Lima, Peru, to protest the traffic problems afflicting their country and promote bicycle friendly policies. This event is part of the World Naked Bike Ride.

The jovial, nudity-filled event is known as a “ciclonudista” by Peruvians and has become something of an annual event, routinely attracting citizens to shed their clothes and bike through the capital.

As reported by medical journal The Lancet, accidents involving motor vehicles are, as of 2011, “the leading cause of death for children aged 5-14 years, who typically walk to school, and the second-leading cause for people aged 15-44 years.” The cyclists biking through Lima au naturel are hoping to change that statistic, or at very least get it exposure through showing some skin.

Nude cycling has been an increasingly popular form of protest across the globe with the organization World Naked Bike Ride claiming events in 70 participating cities across 20 countries. If you want to learn more about the phenomenon of nude bicycling you can visit their website below.

If you happen to be travelling north along the coast from Lima, 6.5 hours drive from Lima City is the town of Chimbote.

Caleta Colorada is a popular nudist beach which is 30 minutes drive south from Chimbote then a short boat trip to reach the beach.

If you follow your GPS to these coordinates -9.189399, -78.566071, then walk towards the sea, there should be boats you can hire to get you over to Caleta Colorada beach.

Alternatively there is a coastal pathway that is 2.2 kms long (about a 30-minute walk).

Very much a mixed-sex beach.

Puerto Bonito Beach

Puerto Bonito nude beach is located 1.5 hours drive south from Lima City.

It is possible to reach this beach by boat, the other way is to drive to the nearest beach access road at these GPS coordinates -12.593954, -76.703697 This beach is mainly attended by members of the Naturist Nudist Association of Lima (ANNLI) which tends to be very heterosexual/ family orientated. They indicate that singles should not come onto the beach, displays of any sexual affection is prohibited and no photography. Expect the beach-goers to be more heterosexual couples than gay men.

Maldonado / Notable nude beach

Playa Chihuahua Located on Portezuelo Bay, in the outskirts of Punta del Este, Playa Chihuahua was one of the pioneers in South America to unveil concepts such as “nude” or “naturist” all along its meters of sand so that everyone could feel at ease ever since its beginnings.

Uruguay is known worldwide for this beach which features sand, sea, woods and is easily accessed by car. It lies just one kilometer away from the seaside motorway that joins Montevideo and Punta del Este Peninsula.

At Chihuahua, what started out as a fashion became so natural that today it is a tourist attraction at Punta del Este, where nudism began to be practiced in the 1960s. In those days, the hippies and the sexual revolution appeared in various locations in the world.

However, nudists used to be chased and sometimes apprehended.

After several judicial struggles, in 1994 Chihuahua was granted the legal status of AUDEN (Asociación Uruguaya De Naturismo) (Naturism Uruguayan Association), whose members have worked together with naturist people that visits Chihuahua with the aim of succeeding in making naturism look good before the rest of the community.

Years later, Chihuahua Beach was declared naturist beach by the City Council of Maldonado and the Uruguayan Tourist Office.

Thus, it was decreed that the entire beach at Chihuahua resort should be optionally nude. This put an end to the prejudices and dictatorial thoughts of those who reject diversity. Moreover, topless was also authorized at many beaches in the District of Maldonado.

At present, this beach welcomes from 2,000 to 3,000 visitors everyday in the high summer season (January and February) and it is no longer the site where busybodies go to see what it is all about.

If you don’t mind straight-owned, mixed-sex naturist resorts, Chihuahua has two you could check out; El Refugio (this place has a pool but is a little rustic) and Chiahuahua Resort which is very modern and has a large pool. Along Chihuahua beach you’ll also find a small beach restaurant that allows nudity while dining.
