WORKS MINISTER JUSTIFIES REMOVAL OF MANGROVES FROM SEASHORE

With Tri-Start Development Company facing backlash from APNU-AFC Opposition and villagers of Versailles-Malgre Tout over the establishment of an Oil and Gas Shore Base, that saw the removal of the mangroves in the area, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has justified the removal of the mangrove. He said that it is only done in the

interest of development.

Several villagers in Region Three, just a few days ago, raised concerns that if there is the removal of the mangroves, there will be a significant amount of flooding in the area.

This claim, however, was debunked by Minister Edghill who maintained that in the interest of having development in Guyana some natural defences

have to go.

“Development comes with changes,” says Minister Edghill. He said with the presence of the oil and gas sector, there must be ways in which the sector is facilitated and such ways are for the establishment of several seashore properties.

With such development coming the way of Guyana, Edghill sees this project and many to come as a

plus for Guyana since the country will not be looking at other countries for several services that will be established here.

This is said will also lead to the employment of hundreds of Guyanese, and develop the infrastructure of Guyana while not compromising the environment through development.

Adding to such a note, Edghill said his Ministry along with several agencies looked at the plans for the shore base and granted all approval.

While having the proposal and requisite works put in place with finalized documentation, the project was started with oversight from several agencies that fall under the Civil Defence Board and thus far no future threat from the sea

to those residents in the area.

Mr. Edghill also explained that where the mangrove would have been removed, the area will be filled with steel sheet pile which will act as an alternative to the mangrove and protect the area from being flooding.

With the mangrove seen in the past and a means of preventing soil erosion and reducing the factor of flooding at the seaShore, Mr Edghill has assured all Guyanese that climate change is important and reminded all that it was under this Government that the mangrove programme was initiated.

He insisted that due to this assessment, climate change will not be a factor when the mangroves are “displaced”.

The Versailles-Malgre Tout Oil and Gas shore base, which is facilitated

by Businessman Krishna ‘Kris’ Persaud, is said to come at a cost of $100M. The two areas proposed are said to be over 79 acres of land, one part of which remains leased and another being bought.

CITY ROAD LINK COMMISSIONED—part of a Road Bible says Edghill

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill today commissioned Hunter Street, Albouystown opening

Close to two years after Hunter Street, Albouystown was started under the APNU-AFC Government, that road was today commissioned by the Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.

This is one of the main access roads from the East Bank corridor into the Georgetown project.

With the completion of an over 300 meter-long road by Vieira Logistics 66, Surrey Paving, and Ideal Engineering at a cost of over $176M. Of this sum, $99.4M went to Vieira, and $77M was given to Surrey Paving and Ideal Engineering.

The original contract was expected to begin on 10 June 2019 with a completion date of 11 December 2019.

The defects liability period was 12 months

and works included the construction of pedestrian sidewalk with concrete drains on the eastern side of the carriageway, along with widening of road shoulders, full construction of concrete drain at the western side, and asphalt concrete road surface finish.

The contractor was granted three extensions with a revised contractual completion date of 7 August 2020. However, work on the street eventually trickled until it ceased sometime later.

While the road was expanded and sandfilled, it was left in a deplorable state, even as vehicles continued to traverse the surface.

Later the entire contract was awarded to Vieira Logistics, 66, who was awarded a contract to

complete the street after the original contractor, Surrey Paving and Ideal Engineering abandoned works on the roadway and left it in a deplorable state.

As of today, commuters will now have one of three alternative routes to get to the East Bank Demerara Public Road as a choice.

During the construction of the road, traffic had to be diverted from Hunter Street, adding pressure to the other routes.

This congestion added to the already congested situation, during the rush hours with all the routes being fully functional.

Speaking at the commissioning of the road, Minister Edghill said that this project forms part of the PPP/C Government “Road Bible”.

Republic Park area but the affluent residents there objected. The new site at Coverden was subsequently identified by the investor - Global Oil Environmental Services (GOES).

Several residents put questions to the EPA and the developers but very few were answered before the EPA officials,

who hosted the meeting, abruptly ended the meeting and cut off residents who were left frustrated and angry.

Residents were keen to understand what environmental impact the project would have on their community and the nature of the waste material that will be treated there.

On a day of a family gathering that should have been filled with love and laughter, a fight that broke out between three family members turned deadly, leaving one dead after he was being hit with a rum bottle.

The incident took place Sunday night. The victim was identified as 31-year- old Ganga Persaud, also known as Toney, of Fairfield, Essequibo Coast.

Initial reports suggest that Toney was at the time drinking alcohol

with three of his family members; one, Muneshwar Persaud, and another who was identified by the police.

During the height of the drinking an argument and fight broke out, and Toney was hit to his head with a rum bottle.

The suspect then exited through the front door and the victim, Persaud made his way out through the back door.

Muneshwar Persaud later rushed to the front door and saw the suspect,

who later shouted that the man was dead.

Toney was later discovered in a pool of blood, with the blood coming from a wound to his left underarm.

Muneshwar and a neighbour then rushed the victim to the Suddie Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect ran away from the scene but on Monday morning his mother took him to the Police and he was placed in custody

who lives in London was home for this birthday.

She said that her mother was a housewife who was a vendor and who did crotchet to support the family.

The years have gone by but Granny Talbot still has a keen sense of sight and hearing. She hears all that is going on around her and in her own time, she would comment on

those conversations.

On her 100th birthday, she was the center of attraction at the Nelsons residence. When it was over she danced from there all the way home.

Her daughter, Hermine, said that she was a disciplinarian.

Grandchildren were not spared. Today she sits at the head of five generations—children,

grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great, great-grandchildren.

There is talk about some families being blessed with longevity.

This may be the case here. Granny Evadne is the third among her relatives to see the magical landmark. One Mr. Phillips and Ms. Jesse Spencer—102 are the others in recent times.

Evadne Eldica Talbot

She may not be the oldest person in Guyana but she certainly is among the oldest. Evadne Eldica Talbot celebrated her109th birthday, on Monday at her home in Buxton.

She was born Evadne Eldica Watson on May 10, 1912, in Buxton.

Circumstances forced her to move to the city to live with an aunt. The result was that she attended Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School. The aunt migrated to Curacao so Evadne relocated to Buxton.

Later she married Kingsel Talbot. The union produced five children— Hermine, Harvey, Raymond, and the now dead Bernard and Cora.

Kingsel died in 1985.

For her birthday, Monday, Granny Talbot, as the village calls her, was dressed to match, wearing polka dot shirt and matching shoes.

Her caregiver is Ingrid Nelson.

Three weeks ago she took the centenarian to the doctor. The result of that visit, she said, was

that Granny Talbot’s vital signs were better than hers.

There was no evidence of high blood pressure or diabetes.

Ms. Nelson said that Granny Talbot’s favorite foods are Karila, ochro, and steamed fish head.

Sometimes she would have special requests.

The other day it was breadfruit.

Up to six years ago, the centenarian was going to the market and doing her own cooking.

Citizens are now receiving the Sputnik V vaccine, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccines, all of which have been administered in the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

Each requires two doses.

While the second dose of the AstraZeneca and the Sinopharm is identical

to the first, the second dose of the Sputnik V vaccine is different from the first. Where the first dose of Sputnik V is known as Component One, the second is called Component Two. To be fully vaccinated with this vaccine, an individual must receive the first and second doses.

As persons rush to receive their first doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony has said that that level of enthusiasm has waned, when it comes to the receiving of the second dose.

The second dose makes one immunized. As such the Minister is calling on persons to ensure that they are fully vaccinated.

This announcement came during the daily COVID-19 Update, in

which Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony has raised concern that persons are not returning for their second dose.

Mr. Anthony said that while the number remains high, with 32% of the adult population being vaccinated with the first dose, which accounts for over 157,797 persons, he said that of that number only 13,010 people have so far returned for their second dose.

In this case, he said it remains worrying since a

person must note that to be fully immunized against the deadly virus, one must have all two doses.

“On average, we have 2.5% of the persons getting their second dose but again we see the variation. We have 3.9% of the people in Region Two who have returned for their second dose, while at Region One, the figure is just at 1.2%.

“So, again for those who have received their first dose, the process does not end with the first dose.

A Police Constable attached to Mahaica Police Station has found himself in hot water after hitting a 50-yearold Fisherman, with his car, killing the man. The constable then drove away Saturday night.

The Suspects, however later turned himself over to the police and is set to possibly face charges for the death.

The victim at this time is identified as a fisherman, Navindra Ramnarine, of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

According to the Guyana Police Force, at

the time of the incident, Ramnarine was heading across the pedestrian crossing north to south at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara when a motor pickup, with license plate number GPP 8699, struck him down.

With a clear understanding of what had transpired, the Police Constable, who was at the time driving, drove away from the scene.

Ramnarine was picked up in an unconscious condition by publicspirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he

was dead on arrival.

Subsequently, the owner of the car, Ashton Barker, after hearing about the man’s death, walked into the police at the Brickdam police station Sunday evening to say that it was his car involved in the accident.

It was some 15 minutes after Mr. Barker arrived that the driver of the car on the night of the incident showed up.

He was placed under close arrest at the Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara Police Station as the investigations continue
