Guyana has debated for too long, the use of marijuana for religious, medicinal, and recreational use. Central Government ought to remove by way of amending the legislation, the custodial sentences for quantities of marijuana used by individuals in general and members

of the Rastafarian Community in particular.

This is the view of Mayor Ubraj Narine.

“But if my friend took the vaccines to protect himself and his family and someone decide they will not take the vaccines,

what give that person the right to put my friend at risk?

“So, whatever measures we bring in place has to be a measure that brings balance to the equation, so that the responsible act that my friend made by taking the vaccines is not subjected to the other person’s irresponsibility,” President Ali insisted.

That equation according to the Head of State will come in a manner in which the reopening of the country will only facilitate the granting of those who are fully vaccinated.

The President noted that there are requests to open cinemas, for persons fully vaccinated. Those wanting to travel to Guyana must be fully vaccinated.

The President said that we simply cannot continue to operate in a current manner and with vaccines being seen as the way out then we have to focus on getting most people vaccinated.

“If we don’t the COVID-19 Pandemic will continue to destroy our livelihood.”

According to the Minister of Health, Guyana by the end of the year will be focusing on getting 80-85% of persons fully vaccinated in order to have herd immunity.

However, with close to 130,000 persons being fully vaccinated at this time that accounts for about 25%. The Ministry maintains that there is a far way to go.

ABUSIVE HUSBAND STABBED TO DEATH parent’s home at Old

A fire of unknown origin in the Wismar area has claimed the life of an Elderly Woman, who lived alone in her wooden home.

The dead woman was identified as 83-year-old, Norma Semple.

A police investigation has revealed so far that the fire started between 02:15 hours and 02:50 hours today at Block 22, Wismar Linden Area, in the wooden house in which Ms. Semple lived alone.

According to an

eyewitness and the dead woman’s neighbour, Alita Prowell, she was inside her home when she heard a loud and continuous cracking sound.

She added that the sounds caused her to look through her windows and observed Ms. Semple’s home completely on fire.

As a result, an alarm was raised and neighbours sought to rescue the elderly woman.

Those efforts were, however, futile as the flames were too much to handle.

Leaving the job to the fire service, a crew of firefighters was summoned and the fire was eventually extinguished.

A search was later carried out among the debris and the lifeless body of a female who is suspected to be Semple was seen on the ground below the kitchen area, burnt beyond recognition.

The body was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex. It is now at the Pensioners’ Funeral Parlor Mortuary.

Yet another abusive relationship has ended in the tragic death of one of the partners. This time a fight between husband and wife has left the husband dead. He was stabbed about his body at Providence, East Bank Demerara.

Dead in Anthony Pakanram, called Max. The suspect has been identified as the man’s

28-year-old wife.

Enquires disclosed that Max and his wife were in a common-law relationship. They shared three children together.

Max had a history of violence towards his wife.

On Saturday, the two had a misunderstanding which caused Max to physically assault his wife who moved out of their shared home to her

Road, Providence.

The next day, about 15:30 hours, Max went to the woman’s location and an argument ensued.

Max became angry and armed himself with a knife. His wife tried to flee but he cornered her and a scuffle ensued.

Max was heard to groan and was seen bleeding from the neck. As they parted, he walked a short distance and collapsed.

He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by family members where he died while receiving medical care.

The body is presently at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting post mortem.

GTT unionized workers get pay hike

Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) and the Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union (GPTWU) have reached an agreement in which

will see a four and six per cent increase for staff for 2021 and 2022 respectively.

The two bodies signed a Collective Labour Agreement that will cover only Union

Workers that is set at 150 Staff.

The Agreement will see a four per cent increase on the basic salary for October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, and a six per cent

increase from October 2021 to October 2022.

The two have also agreed to do a review of the agreement with the aim of raising that scale to 8 per cent.

At the signing, the two bodies were represented

by GTT Representative and GPTWU Union Reps, who expressed gratitude in the agreement.

Speaking on behalf of GTT, Human Resource Officer, Tiana Gurcharran, said that the company is happy to conclude negotiation for the increase in wages and salaries.

The company is happy to continue working along with the union. It is part of having a good relationship under the

leadership of the new Chief Executive Officer.

“We are happy that we have concluded this and we look forward working with the GPTWU, as we move along under our new leadership, a new CEO,” Ms Gurcharran noted.

President of GPTWU, Mr Harold Shepherd, said they would have started this process this year and they are happy that the process was concluded in a short time without the matter heading to arbitration.

“We would have commenced this process early this year. During the bilateral discussion, we were unable to reach a resolution, so the issue was referred to the Ministry of Labour for

conciliation.

“We are happy with the input of the Chief Labour Officer and more so the new CEO of GTT. “At the first meeting we were able to meet a position in which we were able to agree to a four per cent increase on the basic salary for the GTT Unionized members,” Mr Shepherd noted.

He added that it’s a welcome move since the staff at GTT are also faced with the high cost of living.

“We are all aware that cost of living has skyrocketed over the last few months and obviously our membership at GTT have to face the market like anybody else.”

Fire at Teperu Quarries

Charles Kertzious, said that he was in the mines when he hears cries of “Fire, Fire” He said that he immediately grabbed a

fire extinguisher and raced to the scene. He said that by the time he reached there the roof was ablaze.

He said that he summoned the fire truck which, with

the support of a bucket brigade, extinguished the fire.

Not long after, he saw a man with burns about his body, He recognized the

man as being one of the occupants of the house that burnt. Immediately, a team rushed the man to the Bartica Hospital.

Today Kertzious said that

he learned that the man took his own discharge.

The incident is being investigated by the Bartica Police and the Bartica Fire Service.

Police arrest taxi driver with questionable beef

Ranks of the Guyana Police force have arrested a taxi driver carrying a quantity of beef at Cove and John without the requisite documents.

The police were conducting a road block

exercise on the Cove and John Public Road during the wee hours of this morning.

They said that during the exercise motorcar HC 9448 was stopped.

Inside was a 31-year-

old taxi driver of South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, It was at that moment, a request was made by the said ranks to conduct a search for drugs, arms, ammunition, or anything illegal and the driver

complied.

A search was then carried out and a number of suspected parts from a cow were found inside the trunk.

When asked to produce documents

for the said parts of the cow, the driver did not produce any.

He was then questioned as to how he obtained it and he indicated that he was sent to Berbice by someone to

collect the meat and was transporting it to Linden.

He was immediately arrested and taken into custody at the Cove and John Police Station for the offence of unlawful possession.

The victim held on to the suspect and a scuffle ensued during which the suspect discharged a round from the firearm.

The suspect managed to escape out to the public road but was then caught up by the victim who chased after him and took away the firearm and held on to him.

The suspect was apprehended by the victim and persons who had gathered at the scene.

The Police were subsequently summoned. They visited the scene and took the suspect along with a .32 revolver and two live .32 ammunition into custody.

US Deputy Chief of Mission Visits Region Nine During a recent visit to Lethem and St. Ignatius, Region Nine, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission, Mark Cullinane, met with the Regional Chairman, Guyana Police Force leadership, the Regional Health Officer, the Lethem Town Clerk, the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce, and village leaders.

The Deputy Chief of Mission received a tour of St. Ignatius Secondary School and donated 200 school kits, including backpacks and school supplies, on behalf of the U.S. Embassy.

“It was a great pleasure to visit Region Nine and understand the priorities and concerns of local officials and business leaders, as well

as experience the beauty of the region and the warmth of Rupununi hospitality,” said the Deputy Chief of Mission.

The visit underscores the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to helping build capacity in remote areas, strengthen border security, and support youth education across the country.

Guyana Revenue Authority Initiates Customs Administration Modernization Consulting Project

The two countries expect that the consulting project which is expected to be for a duration of eight months will bring shifts in Guyana Customs administration in various fields, including risk management, cargo management and item classification, and contribute to the automation of Guyana’s Customs administration.

On June 4, 2021, in keeping with an aid agreement between Korea Customs Service and the GRA, a delegation of six consultants from KCS visited the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) located in Georgetown and

commenced consultations for the Modernization of the Guyana Customs Administration.

The 50-day visit to Guyana is part of an effort to strengthen cooperation between GRA and KCS, and to conclude with the delivery of a final report

which will recommend a future model for Guyana Customs.

During the visit, the project team will introduce UNI-PASS, Korea’s e-customs clearance system and hold seminars on Korea’s Customs Administration

Two charged with taxi driver murder, one reportedly confesses

Two men who were reportedly fingered in the brutal killing of a taxi driver during a robbery and later dumping his body in the Ogle area have been charged and remanded to jail for murder.

‘Lil Alfey’ appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and were both not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

It is alleged that the two on June 30, 2021, at Block 1 Ogle, East Coast Demerara, murdered

53-year-old taxi driver, Kenrick Trim, during the course and furtherance of a robbery The two were later remanded to prison until August 6, 2021.

Reports are that the body Trim, of Belfield Housing Scheme; East Coast Demerara, was found just after 9:00 am

the said morning. It was believed that he may have been dumped there with stab wounds and a battered body.

An examination of the body found that Trim had multiple stab wounds about his body. There were bloodstains on the mouth and around the nostrils.

His car was also reportedly found a short distance away from the body with the key still in

the ignition and the radio on.

It was during the investigation that police then nabbed one suspect who revealed that he had linked up with the other suspect while serving prison time for simple larceny of a cell phone.

The confessor then noted that on the day of the incident he was picked up from the bus park and two went to a snackette located at Carmichael Street to purchase something to eat.

The confessor reportedly told police that he told the other man that he was in need of a place to stay since he was homeless at the time.

Subsequently, after spending some time at the snackette the two then stopped a car that Trim was driving and they both entered.

It was further explained by the confessor that he was seated behind the driver and the other man was seated behind the front passenger seat. He reportedly said that as they got to Ogle one of them grabbed the taxi driver by his neck and choked him “until he passed out.”

They then pulled the deceased over to the back seat but he was still moving so one of them dealt the taxi driver several stabs about his body.

Shortly after, the two removed the valuables from the man, threw out the body, and later parked the car in another spot. The murder weapon was discharged in some bushes nearby while the two subsequently escaped on foot to a minibus close to the area.
