WB TEAM HERE FOR STRATEGIC DIALOGUE WITH GOVERNMENT ON PARTNERSHIP GOING FORWARD

A High-level World Bank (WB) team led by its Vice President responsible for the Latin American and Caribbean Region, Carlos Felipe Jaramillo, is here on a two-day visit.

A High-level World Bank (WB) team led by its Vice President responsible for the Latin American and Caribbean Region, Carlos Felipe Jaramillo, is here on a two-day visit.

Yesterday the team met with Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr. Ashni Singh

in the Finance Ministry’s Boardroom.

The visit aims to reaffirm the World Bank’s commitment to Guyana and to assess areas for further opportunities for expanded partnership in pursuit of the country’s national development goals. The team will also have discussions with the Government on a number of projects.

The visit serves also as an opportunity for dialogue between the Bank and the Government of Guyana on the Government’s economic objectives and priorities and how the World Bank can support these through its assistance and lending programs.

During the meeting, Minister Singh

acknowledged the Bank’s support over the years. He said that he looked forward to further assist in strengthening the partnership between Guyana and the Bank.

Following the meeting with the Finance Minister, the World Bank team, along with officials from the Ministry of Finance inspected various developmental

and completed project sites which form part of the World Bank’s project portfolio in Guyana.

The site visits included pump stations at Enmore, Lusignan, and Liliendaal that fall under the Flood Risk Management project for Guyana.

The objective of that project is to reduce the risk of flooding in the low-lying areas of East Demerara. Civil works are underway to improve drainage, update critical sections of the East Demerara Water Conservancy dams and channels, and improve hydro-meteorological monitoring.

Additionally, the team visited the Westminster Secondary School, West Bank Demerara which falls under the Secondary Education Improvement Project. The school

caters to 1000 students residing in the Region Three area and offers amenities in TVET, Home Economics, Allied Arts, Science and Information Technology Laboratories, and a library, in addition to classrooms and a dance studio.

A multi-purpose hall is provided for indoor sports, large gatherings as well as seating for the canteen facilities.

The facility also caters for persons with special needs with wheelchair access to all areas on both floors.

The visiting World Bank team also includes incoming Country Director for the Caribbean, Lilia Burunciuc, and Outgoing Country Director for the Caribbean, Tahseen Sayed.

HEALTH MINISTRY APPEALS TO RELIGIOUS BODIES TO HELP WITH VACCINATION

With bus, boat, and minibus drivers now only given the green light to operate, the Minibus Union has stepped in to say that it will not support the new requirement forced upon the drivers, with no level of consultation.

This comes after the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, along with the rest COVID-19 Task Force indicated in a new gazette order that in order for mini-bus, boat and hire cars operators to function they are required to be fully vaccinated.

It was later explained that those Operators who continue to operate without being vaccinated will see their license suspended.

Head of the Minibus Union, Eon Andrews, said that the union will not accept something that was imposed, without any consultation from the Union.

“I don’t know what they plan to do, but I will never support that and I will fight against it in any way possible. They are not consulting with persons.

“No consultation; all you know is that Friday something appeared in the papers so that it is in the official gazette and it will have started by Monday.

Threats and threats, all we hear is threats all the time.”

Mr. Andrews noted.

He said that he does not agree with the requirement since all citizens must have the right to choose.

And they should have to decide since they do not know what underlying condition they are dealing with.

“I know that one has a

right to choose, and there are certain protocols that come out of the labor organization and from the ILO that says what is available to all human beings on this earth.

“What I’m afraid of WHO, England, Canada, and the USA have outlawed that thing (Sputnik V) and it was brought here. So, one does not know what vaccine is being given to him.

“I know people who would have taken the vaccine and they are here no more. I’m not

saying that the vaccine would have killed then but it has activated things that caused a negative response,” Mr. Andrews added.

Mr. Andrews is of the opinion that the Government would have walked into this confusion. There has been some level of the standoff between the operators and the Minister on the acceptance.

He maintained that from the inception the authorities never reached out to the union to have a say on the matter and as such, “we now find ourselves in such position.”

“I think that what has happened with the Government is that they brought it on themselves. When the union was advocating to keep the COVID-19 Protocols active in public transportation, where two should be in a seat, it was like the minibus driver will make sacrifices.

“So, the Government will have to do their part

which means that we expect them to reduce the cost of fuel and probably any other operational cost,” Mr. Andrews maintained.

Since the imposition of such measures, some operators have come out publicly calling on the Government to return to the original position.

Some have not made up their minds to take the vaccine and while they haven’t it will cost them some level of financial loss since they will not be able to operate.

The Government has insisted that Guyana should reach 80% of the adult population being vaccinated by the end of the year.

President, Irfaan Ali has also noted that in order to strike a balance in society the measures must be added in order for the greater protection of its people.

He also said on a separate occasion that that unvaccinated people are more dangerous than that COVID-19 Virus.

MAYOR UBRAJ NARINE REJECTS “INTERIM TOWN CLERK” APPOINTMENT

A 19-year-old is now in the hands of the police after he reportedly used a lighter to burn his girlfriend’s two-year-old child on her vagina and back after he became annoyed at her taking too long to use the toilet.

According to the reports, the incident occurred just around 18:35 hours yesterday in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.

The police reported that Nickeita Murray of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne,

Berbice reported to the Police Outpost that the suspect assaulted and burnt her two-year-old niece with a cigarette lighter.

Further investigation, revealed that the 19-yearold had visited his girlfriend’s residence at the same address. His girlfriend is the mother of the injured child.

While there the suspect became annoyed at the child since she was urinating and defecating more often than he

deemed necessary.

As such he then took a cigarette lighter and burnt her on her back and vagina.

The child was then escorted to the Port Mourant Public Hospital by police after the report was filed. She was medically examined by a doctor on duty and was later sent away.

The suspect was arrested and placed into custody assisting with the investigation.

Mayor Ubraj Narine at an emergency press conference on Tuesday, rejected the appointment of “Interim Town Clerk” Ms. Candace Nelson, by the chairman of the Local Government Commission (LGC) Mr. Julius Faerber.

Mayor Narine indicated that the actions of the chairman of the LGC were unlawful and immoral. He accused the chairman of the LGC of attempting to usurp the functions of an elected council which derived its legitimacy from the Local

Government Elections held in 2018.

Mayor Narine said that what was most disrespectful and distasteful was that the commission failed in its mandate to fill vacancies at the municipality but has selectively appointed an individual to function in the capacity of “Interim Town Clerk”.

This act can only be seen as another attempt to deliberately stymie the work of the city council at the behest of some elements of the political

directorate.

The Mayor stated that the council rejects the stance of the chairman of the LGC operating as a political tool with the sole intent of engaging in political acts of sabotage.

The Mayor placed on record that he wrote to the chairman of the LGC on numerous occasions to engage him. These letters were rebuffed, while the chairman issues orders and directives to the staff of the municipality.

Mayor Narine expressed his concern for the efficient administration of services in Georgetown especially the consequences that these illegal actions will have on the vendors who continue to work hard to make a living in these tough economic times.

He emphasized that he has always stood on the side of the people of Georgetown and will fight to ensure that their lives are not negatively affected by petty politics.

A drunk driver today remains in custody after fatally hitting a woman in the wee hours of the morning on Homestretch Avenue.

The dead woman has been identified as, 23-yearold Malesa Lewis of La Penitence, Georgetown.

Sophia killing linked to an eyewitness to murder

As the Police continue their investigation in the gunning down of a Dennis Street, Campbellville youth in Sophia, some witnesses are insisted that the killing stemmed from the now dead man’s friend is a witness to a murder.

Now dead is 21-yearold Jaleel Leow, a mechanic of Dennis

Street Campbellville, Georgetown. He was shot multiple times by two men yesterday afternoon in the “B” field Sophia Area.

Also at the shooting 23-year-old, Brandon Smith has shot his arms.

So far two suspects who have been named as ‘Big John’ or ‘Double Clip’ and ‘Brainer’ are

being sought by law enforcement.

With the incident now under a full murder investigation, one witness is of the view that Leow was killed due to his friend being a witness to the murder.

“Brandon is a witness; they kill (somebody) less than a year right in his yard and Big John

Nephew is one of the suspects. He has not been caught and he is on the run…That’s what I think because I can’t see any reason,” the eyewitness noted.

In explaining what transpired the eyewitness, who does not want to be named, said that Jaleel Leow was shot multiple times even as he tried to escape. “(The shooter) comes and he asks me, “Y’all want a problem with us?” I said what problem and Brainer (Seon) turn to me and said yes.

“He then pulled out two cutlasses and he said, “Yes, we come for a problem with yall”. My friend Jaleel was in the park.

Jaleel said “If you want a problem we want a problem too. Then John pulls out his gun and runs into the yard and he started shooting my friend. My friend tried to get up and he continued shooting. My friend starts to get up again and he still shot him.”

A statement from the police said that Leow

along with Brandon and his friends was at the shop hanging out when they were approached by the men, who asked if they wanted a problem.

At that time, the eyewitness then had an exchange of words with the men, who then entered the premises, with their cutlasses.

One suspect then pulled out a handgun from the waist of his pants, walked up Leow, who was walking into the yard, and discharged two rounds which struck him to his right upper back and he fell to the ground.

The gunman discharged two more rounds at him on the ground hitting him to his upper chest and the injured man then ran to the back of the yard where he collapsed.

The shooter then fired another shot at Smith who was standing by the roadside. The bullet grazed him to his right upper hand, but he fled the scene.

The shooter and his accomplice got onto

their bicycles and made good their escape.

According to the eyewitness, they did not have to do young Leow what they did to him.

When asked if she remains fearful for her life she explained that she is since the killing was done in the bright daylight. The killers were without any masks and that they will not stop until all are killed.

“It (happened) in my yard. My Mom, my children, my nephew was in the yard and if you could do so in your bright daylight, that is to show how much power he has.

“And then you come out and threatened me after. Like you are not satisfied; you still want more people to die,” the witness added.

The eyewitness expressed the hope that justice will be served for someone who was innocently killed.

Guyana Revenue Authority Initiates Customs Administration Modernization Consulting Project

to share its experience and know-how.

The two countries expect that the consulting project which is expected to be for a duration of eight months will bring shifts in Guyana Customs administration in various fields, including risk management, cargo management and item classification, and contribute to the automation of Guyana’s Customs administration.

On June 4, 2021, in keeping with an aid agreement between Korea Customs Service and the GRA, a delegation of six consultants from KCS visited the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) located in Georgetown and

commenced consultations for the Modernization of the Guyana Customs Administration.

The 50-day visit to Guyana is part of an effort to strengthen cooperation between GRA and KCS, and to conclude with the delivery of a final report

which will recommend a future model for Guyana Customs.

During the visit, the project team will introduce UNI-PASS, Korea’s e-customs clearance system and hold seminars on Korea’s Customs Administration

Two charged with taxi driver murder, one reportedly confesses

Two men who were reportedly fingered in the brutal killing of a taxi driver during a robbery and later dumping his body in the Ogle area have been charged and remanded to jail for murder.

‘Lil Alfey’ appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court and were both not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

It is alleged that the two on June 30, 2021, at Block 1 Ogle, East Coast Demerara, murdered

53-year-old taxi driver, Kenrick Trim, during the course and furtherance of a robbery The two were later remanded to prison until August 6, 2021.

Reports are that the body Trim, of Belfield Housing Scheme; East Coast Demerara, was found just after 9:00 am

the said morning. It was believed that he may have been dumped there with stab wounds and a battered body.

An examination of the body found that Trim had multiple stab wounds about his body. There were bloodstains on the mouth and around the nostrils.

His car was also reportedly found a short distance away from the body with the key still in

the ignition and the radio on.

It was during the investigation that police then nabbed one suspect who revealed that he had linked up with the other suspect while serving prison time for simple larceny of a cell phone.

The confessor then noted that on the day of the incident he was picked up from the bus park and two went to a snackette located at Carmichael Street to purchase something to eat.

The confessor reportedly told police that he told the other man that he was in need of a place to stay since he was homeless at the time.

Subsequently, after spending some time at the snackette the two then stopped a car that Trim was driving and they both entered.

It was further explained by the confessor that he was seated behind the driver and the other man was seated behind the front passenger seat. He reportedly said that as they got to Ogle one of them grabbed the taxi driver by his neck and choked him “until he passed out.”

They then pulled the deceased over to the back seat but he was still moving so one of them dealt the taxi driver several stabs about his body.

Shortly after, the two removed the valuables from the man, threw out the body, and later parked the car in another spot. The murder weapon was discharged in some bushes nearby while the two subsequently escaped on foot to a minibus close to the area.
