DR. FRANK ANTHONY SAYS YOUNGER PEOPLE ARE INCREASINGLY AT RISK OF COVID-19

Persons within the age range of 60, and above facing the worst when it comes to the COVID-19, are taking up the mantle. They are forging ahead in large numbers when it comes to being vaccinated, as compared to the younger populations.

This is according to the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, during a COVID-19 Update. He said that as of today, over 61% of the population in Guyana has been vaccinated with their first

dose against the virus.

“What we have seen is that based on our records, in terms of immunization, we have seen quite a good uptake with persons 60 years and above. And, so in that age category we have 61.3% of persons 60 years and above, who would have already taken their first dose of the vaccine.”

Dr. Anthony added that it remains a good number at the moment since they are looking to fully immunize 80% of

the said age category.

With Guyana seeing over 300 deaths since the country was hit with its first case in March 2020, the larger percentage of persons that would have died from the virus would have been persons in that age group.

This is said to have occurred due to a weak immune system and also with the fact that most of the persons within that age range carry some underlying issues that may cause their death.

Elders have taken that

the first step to becoming fully vaccinated to become protected from the virus.

As those persons 60 years and older take the step to protect themselves from viruses, it has been noted that the younger population is lagging behind.

According to Dr. Anthony, it remains a sore point, since now most hospitals are seeing persons within the age range of 40- 59. He said this is significant since only 28. 6% of those persons have been vaccinated.

“What we have noticed over the last couple of months is that we are seeing in the hospital more persons within this age range. We are also seeing from the deaths and those persons who have been following those things in the

newspapers would see that we are getting some of the deaths within this age range.”

Dr. Anthony has expressed his greatest disappointment in those 39 years and younger.

This age group has so far taken the lowest number of vaccines.

“The 18 to 39 years age group is really lagging because we are just about 20.9%. So, it is something we have to work on. We have to encourage the younger people to come out and get their vaccines as well.”

Dr. Anthony also reminded persons that even with a lot of the stats showing that younger persons are so affected; some persons in that age range are being hospitalized, are dying, and also continue to spread the virus without

knowing.

“I think they have heard in a lot of pronouncements that maybe younger people will get a milder form of the disease if they are going to be asymptomatic but there are still are a few who will end up in the hospital.

“Then we have also to consider that when younger people get a milder form of the disease you can also have a long COVID illness and you can also get forms of COVID that we are now discovering” Dr. Anthony is insisting that all age groups, more particularly younger people, take the vaccine in order for the country to reach a stage where the virus is not so much of a threat to lives in Guyana and around the world.

FIRE AT LUSIGNAN

A Lusignan property owner is counting his losses after an abandoned house occupied by four unidentified Venezuelan Nationals went up in flames, Wednesday night.

The fire reportedly occurred just after 20:00

hours Wednesday night at 50-52 Lusignan Railway Embankment, ECD. The house was said to be owed

by Rukhmin Ramdular of Area H, Lusignan, ECD. At the time of the incident persons in the area claimed that they

heard a loud explosion which came from the said building and shortly after they saw fire and smoke.

Later even though the fire was extinguished by the Guyana Fire Service the building was gutted.
