Nandlall files another charge against Trevor Benn

Already facing charges of misconduct in office, former Lands and Surveys Commission boss, Trevor Benn, was hauled yet again before the court, yesterday, and

charged for selling at an undervalued price while he had no authority to do so.

Benn, in the company of his attorney, Mark Waldron, appeared in the

Courtroom of the Senior Magistrate, Sherdel Marcus-Isaacs where the charge was read to him.

According to the prosecution’s case, it alleged that Benn,

between December 2018 and August 2020, at GL&SC, while being a Public Officer, willfully misconducted himself in public office by executing two parcels

of land known plot A Mandela and Aubrey Barker Street South, South Ruimveldt.

At the same time, he caused Wilfred Branford to pay $13.5 Million, knowing that he had no authority to conduct the transactions and knowing also that the property was valued at $60.8 Million.

The prosecution contended that there was a breach of the public trust, without any excuse or reasonable justification.

Benn, was not required to enter a plea to the charge and was placed on $100,000 bail and later ordered to return to court on May 28.

The Land which is said to be owed by the Car Care Enterprise Company owner Wilfred

Branford was said to be sold at an undervalued price according to the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall.

Nandlall has so far filed a lawsuit against Branford in the hopes of repossessing the land knowing the type of transactions he would have entered into with the former GL&SC Boss, Benn.

Nandlall, also noted that the State is the lawful owner of the property and that GL&SC had no authority to sell the land.

As a result, Nandlall has asked the court to issue several orders. He is claiming damages in excess of $500 million from Former Lands Commissioner, Trevor Benn and the Chief Valuation Officer.

The Guyana Police have dispelled information, which has indicated that Crime is on the rise here in Guyana.

The force in fact had insisted that most major crimes committed this year, as opposed to last year, have decreased dramatically.

There has been a 38.4% decrease in armed robberies where firearms were used by the perpetrators and a 47.7% decrease in armed

robberies where other instruments were used.

Additionally, the force maintained also that Murder has seen a 22.9% decrease with 37 to date, compared to 48 for a similar period last year.

The constant operational activities have led to an overall decrease of 29.8% in serious crimes for this year so far, compared to the same period last year.

The police have also said that so far,

countrywide operations have unearthed some 111 kilograms 11.4 grams of cannabis Sativa (marijuana), and 267.2 grams of cocaine and have led to a number of persons being prosecuted.

This, according to the force, has been a success with the support of the community policing group and through manned roadblocks, the continued assessment of bike riders, etc.

Even with such success, the force is warning members of the public to remain security conscious as they go about their daily endeavors. It has urged that in addition to other safety precautions, people should refrain from moving around with large sums of cash and avoid routines in their movements, wherever practical.

The Force also maintained that it is looking forward to the continued support of the public who can confidentially communicate tips and information to the Force through the following numbers.

A Miner after consuming alcohol collapsed and died in the Port Kaituma area, yesterday.

The dead man has been identified as a 49-year-old miner, Ken Romasindo of Hosororo, Mabaruma.

Reports are that just 15:15hrs Romasindo was seen imbibing at the Port Kaituma Water Front. About 15:31 hrs he sat down in a chair and was observed to be motionless after some time.

The report was made and ranks of the Port Kaituma Police Station went to the scene and started an investigation.

That investigation disclosed that the body bore no marks of violence and no arrest was made.

The body was later taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital and the man pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the cause of the death.

TWO MEN WERE BUSTED WITH COCAINE AND GANJA FOLLOWING A HIGH-SPEED CHASE ON TUESDAY

On Tuesday afternoon, April 20, 2021, two men who tried to escape the law enforcement officials,

were arrested and will be facing charges for drug trafficking.

The suspects were identified as Daquan

Wills, 25, of Meadow Brook Drive and Joel Fung-A-Fat, 39, of Forshaw Street, Georgetown. Fung-A-

Fat is also a citizen of the United States.

The Customs AntiNarcotics Unit (CANU) stated that its ranks were

conducting an operation Tuesday afternoon in Georgetown were several targets, including a maroon Nissan Juke PVV 6706, were under surveillance.

When ranks attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped away, causing CANU officers to chase the vehicle.

The vehicle, which was being driven by Wills, was finally intercepted at Lance Gibbs Street and Vlissengen Road, Georgetown. Wills and Fung-A-Fat were the lone occupants of the vehicle.

During the chase,

a brick of suspected cocaine was thrown from the vehicle. It was retrieved by CANU ranks. That block of suspected cocaine totalled 1.054kg.

As a result of the interception of the two suspects, CANU was then led to conduct a search at Stone Avenue, Campbellville where ranks unearthed more illegal drugs in the yard of an abandoned range house.

CANU said its ranks found suspected cocaine totalling 1.048 kg and suspected cannabis totalling 17.956kg.

Drop Box locations for manual Tax Returns submission – Optimal online submission a more viable option

However, the Agency continues to encourage the public to register with the Optimal Revenue Management System (RMS) as a viable alternative for filing.

The latest fatality is a 52-year-old female from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) who died while receiving care at our medical facility.
