Two more senior cops charged with fraud

Following an investigation into the disappearance of the Guyana Police Funds for years, two more cops were today charged, and placed on bail over falsifying payments.

The two, Assistant Superintendent Loraine Saul, and Superintendent/Force’s Finance Officer, Kurt Smith, were slapped with two charges.

However, with Ms. Saul being absent, Smith

along with Attorney, Mark Waldron appeared before the Chief Magistrate and was not required to enter a plea.

According to the Prosecutor’s Case, it was between December 18 and December 28, last year, in Georgetown, the two conspired with each other and other persons while being officers of GPF to falsify a payment account to sum $1,350,000 to show that meals were supplied to

ranks of riot unit training during December 1 and December 15.

It was further alleged that on December 28 in Georgetown they conspired with each other and other persons while being officers of GPF to falsify a payment account to sum $465,000 to show that meals were supplied to ranks of riot unit training from December 1 to December 15, 2020.

Mr. Waldron, who

made a bail application for Smith maintained that his client was not aware of the document he was signing, that it was brought to him to be signed by another rank.

As such, bail was granted for $200,000, and Smith was later ordered to return to court on May 14 for the continuation of the matter.

In the past month Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kevin Adonis and three other ranks of the GPF were charged for similar crimes.

Adonis, Sergeants Michael Corbin, and Jermaine Fraser along with Corporal Rawl Haynes are currently out on $150,000 bail each for stealing over $19M from the GPF. These charges came after a sum of over $300,000 could not be accounted for and as such a probe was launched by the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU)

Friends and family members are now calling for justice after a 31-yearold woman allegedly died at the hands of doctors at the Davis Memorial Hospital, days after giving birth. The doctors are accused of being unable to treat her for an overdose of fluid in her body.

The dead woman is Alisha Hendricks, who would have been a mother of two.

Ms. Hendricks was reportedly admitted on Friday after her afterbirth was lodged under her stomach and required an immediate C-Section.

However, after the delivery, the doctors, according to the family administered too much saline that caused the woman to have a breathing problem, which caused her death.

INCOMING GUYANESE BUSTED WITH GANJA AT CJIA

A man who is Guyanese but lives and works in the USA was nabbed yesterday by Immigration Officers with over four pounds of Marijuana on arrival at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

The suspect, 50-yearold, Joel Cadogan, who is a dual citizen is now expected to face court.

According to reports

coming out of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, Cadogan, who was an incoming passenger at the time at CJIA, had in possession three large suitcases when he was subjected to a random search after he had cleared immigration.

During the search, four compressed plastic parcels of cannabis wrapped in jeans were

found in his luggage.

Further checks were made and several pairs of sneakers were also found stuffed with numerous small empty Ziploc bags and a tabletop scale.

With the discovery being made, Cadogan was later handed over to CANU where he was detained and further questioned.

The relatives are calling for justice and answers to what may have transpired.

One of Ms Hendricks friends lay blame solely at the doctors.

“We need justice; that’s what we want for her life…

Alisha’s kids deserve it.

The doctor needs to say exactly what happened, what his negligence did.

He needs to step forward and say something. He needs to tell us exactly what happens,” Alisha’s best friend related The friend added that Ms. Hendricks was admitted on Friday morning, and was advised to do a C-Section, since there would have been a breech and the afterbirth was at the bottom of her stomach. This precluded a normal delivery.

the mother continued to feel more pain well into the night, and was also bleeding. She was crying out for pain and later suffered a seizure.

The friend added that they would have given her Saline and she had calmed down but later her body was going into a second seizure. That was halted, as the nurses quickly worked on her.

The trouble later continued Saturday, as the woman’s belly started to swell and immediately warranted the attention of the doctor.

Hendricks was yet again treated for the issue of breathing, pain along with mucous build-up.

The doctor then, who was not at the hospital had to be called knowing how the woman’s situation would have gone from

surgery she lost a lot of blood. His mistake was that he gave her too much fluid at once. Her system could not have taken off all of that at once. So, he found the mistake and he corrected it,” Ms. Hendricks’s friend said.

A friend recounted that she later had to go on oxygen but was stable up until 2 am Sunday morning.

That dreaded news came in the morning when the friend recalled that she received a call yesterday morning and was told that Ms Hendricks did not make it.

She insisted that it’s the doctor’s fault knowing that her friend was a healthy person and only developed those complications after the surgery.

According to her friend, the doctor explained that they had to eventually flush out some fluid that was in her lungs. The fluid was too much for her since she had lost a lot of blood.

“We asked what is happening to her. The doctor said that he realized his mistake, that even though after

Former Health Minister charged over bond rental

Former Minister of Public Health, Dr George Norton

Former Minister of Public Health, Dr George Norton was on Tuesday charged with Misconduct in the Public Office by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) for the rental of the Sussex Street Bond.

Dr Norton was arraigned before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Dr Norton was placed

on $400,000 bail and was required to lodge his passport. The Chief Magistrate adjourned the matter to April 27, 2021.

SOCU’S case is that Dr Norton, while as Public Health Minister under the previous regime, in 2016, unlawfully instructed Trevor Thomas, his Permanent Secretary (PS) at the time to “not” engage the National Procurement and Tender Board Administration (NPTAB).

The move was to allegedly avert procedures as these relate to the tender process. He allegedly single-sourced Linden Holding Inc. the multimillion dollar contract.

The agreement between Linden Holding Inc. and the PS of the Health Ministry was allegedly for a three-year period with a monthly rental fee of $12.5 million.

TWO LUSIGNAN PRISONERS HOSPITALISED

Two Lusignan prisoners are now hospitalized with chop and stab wounds that resulted from a fight on Sunday.

In statement from Guyana Prison Service, the fight resulted from an argument at 19:55hrs between 26-year-old, Gerald Jones, a resident of Buxton, ECD and 26-year-old, Kaley Roberts of Blue Berry

Hill, Linden.

It is unclear what may have started the fight, but the prison has so far indicated that Jones and Roberts It was then that Jones armed himself with an improvised cutlass and dealt Roberts several chops about his body.

Roberts in response armed himself with an ice pick and stabbed Jones in the region of his

chest.

With both men wounded, they were parted, and taken to the infirmary for medical attention, and later transferred to Georgetown, where they are said to be receiving further treatment for their injuries.

The two men’s condition is said to be stable.

Missing North West youth was strangled (NWD) Region One, who was reported missing since April 5, and later found today floating in the Arakaka River in the North West District was reportedly strangled according to the post mortem examination.
