From a Hospital Bed to a Wheelchair

It was no April Fool’s joke on April 1, 2020, when popular entertainer John “Slingshot” Drepaul suffered a massive stroke and had to be rushed to hospital. The singer/songwriter spent the entire month of April 2020, in a city hospital. Unable to use his left arm and left leg, Drepaul was confined to a wheelchair as a means of mobility. He has been engaged in self-therapy during the past 11 months and is now slowly regaining full health. It has been an ongoing struggle with daily therapy and the will to be able to use the affected limbs fully.

Posting on his Facebook account on Easter Sunday last, the popular Guyanese entertainer stated, “April 1st will be one year since I suffered the stroke...am improving, and, with constant therapy, slowly getting stronger...thank you for your love, wishes,

and moral support...nuff, nuff hugs and love.” Indeed, it is an extremely trying period in the singer and songwriter’s life as he battles to return to perfect health, including perfect mobility. At this time, the struggle is still not over as “Slingshot” has indicated. “Bro. Francis, my session went great this afternoon,” he texted me a few days ago. I felt the determination in the tone of that text, and I am sure that all of us who enjoy his performances, especially at Christmas time, are hopeful that “Slingshot” would be back to full health to entertain his fans during the 2021 Christmas season with hits such as, “A Very Merry Guyanese Christmas” and “Christmas in Guyana.” A question in song by “Slingshot” asks, “What are we fighting for?” which is a rhetorical question to those Guyanese who seem hell-bent on racial animosity. There are his other popular compositions such as “Beautiful Island Girl,” “Berbice River Crossing,” and “Caribbean Jam” among others.

Meanwhile, the recovering entertainer has been receiving hundreds of greetings from well-wishers on his Facebook page. Some from his loyal fans include; Faye Dover, “Happy Easter to you and your beautiful wife. Give thanks , my friend.

One love. Stay safe.” Jean James, “O my! Didn’t know you had a stroke. I hope you become free of it as soon as possible. Have a Blessed Easter with your family.” Gladys Accra, “Happy Easter. You are Blessed.”

John “Slingshot” Drepaul was born in Kitty, which was a village at that time. His early education was at Walker’s Under 12, St. James-the-Less Anglican, Redeemer Lutheran Primary, Comenius Primary and the Tagore Memorial High, located at Number 63 village on the Corentyne Coast, Region 6. While yet in High School he formed the Lonely Bulls Combo which was the House Band at the prestigious Penguin Hotel, Night Club and Restaurant on the Strand, New Amsterdam. That establishment was at that time, the premier hotel in New Amsterdam.

After graduating from high school, he was also very active in establishing youth organisations such as Idlers Dominos Club which included the playing of other games such as cards, draughts, checkers, volleyball, cricket, soccer and draughts. In those early years, John Drepaul was young, strong and healthy and used those personal physical attributes to establish the many organizations, small though they were, to enrich the lives of many of his fellow Guyanese. Sharing with me his current health situation, John sent me a text which said in part, “...we can deal with anyone partially overcoming a limitation - physical or mental - and rise above the adversity.” During the past year and his serious health challenges, “Slingshot” continues to update his fans on his current activities to regain full health. Those comments and statements are always inspiring and uplifting for others who also have health challenges.

How wonderful it is to receive a text message from one of the busiest people on the planet which states, “Good evening dear Francis...wishing you and the family a most blessed and memorable weekend. Wishes sent wid nuff, nuff luv and hugs.”

Putting your child first One mother’s journey caring for her child with Autism

By Telesha Ramnarine SIXTEEN years ago when her son was just two years old, Anjalena Beshpatty was keen to pick up on a few things that her son was doing differently from other kids his age. Even though she’d never heard about Autism before, she wasted no time in trying to find out just what was wrong with her boy.

And to this day, the 46-year-old mother of three is happy that when she noticed her son was non-verbal, she didn’t listen to others who kept telling her to hold on – that he will speak in his own time. She busied herself from clinic to clinic, doctor to doctor, trying to get a sense of the possibilities.

Perhaps it was these diligent efforts not to waste a minute that have allowed her autistic son Sameir to turn into a happy, independent

18-year-old who now assists her with her work of helping other families in similar situations today.

From the moment she saw that Sameir was not talking, crying, or wanting to play with other children, Anjalena reached out to a health clinic at Parika with visiting doctors and it was there that she was told about Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

“I then went to an internet café and read about it and was devastating. I did a checklist online and I didn’t want to believe that my son was checking off on so many things. I really had to be honest and tell myself this was it,” Anjalena, now an Occupation Autism Educational Consultant, said in an interview with Pepperpot Magazine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the national

public health agency of the United States of America, ASD is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioural challenges, with people communicating, interacting, behaving, and learning in ways that are different from others.

While some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives, others need less. Having realised that her son falls into the category of the former, the next few years of Anjalena’s life would see her spending her mornings at play and nursery school with her beloved Sameir. She’d go to the school almost every day, then go home to do her lettuce business.

It was a struggle. Her husband worked a shift system and long hours, which meant that for most of the time, it was just her, Sameir and his sister, Anzalena, who

was just two years older.

She didn’t want to deprive her daughter of a normal childhood, so in addition to caring for her son with special needs, Anjalena had to find time for the girl.

And things were hard on Anzalena too as she was being teased about her brother in school. It was just a fence that separated the two schools. So often, she’d just cry and remain in her classroom throughout the day. Anjalena came to the rescue when she asked the school’s permission to talk to the children about Autism. Bartica continues beautification initiatives with erection of PEACE sign

THE people of Bartica have been stretching themselves towards promoting their town and gearing it towards becoming a prime tourist hub. Their latest initiative involves constructing a PEACE garden in the heart of the town, so that it is a must-see for those stepping into Bartica.

The municipality there, led by Mayor Gifford Marshall, has embarked on a number of initiatives over the years aimed at enhancing the landscape of the beautiful town.

“This initiative not only speaks to the consciences of our people but demonstrates our priorities as we move forward, working together for a common goal - one people, one nation, one destiny,” Marshall told Pepperpot Magazine.

Each letter on the PEACE mural represents important building blocks of a democratic society, Marshall pointed out, noting that they are Patriotism, Equity, Accountability, Courage, and Environmentalism.

“The growth of our town hinges on these five pillars. As a consequence, every citizen in Bartica will be encouraged to apply these words to their every action as we unite for a great future,” he expressed.

This centrepiece of peace is fenced with local hard wood, painted white and manicured with choice flowering plants such as ficus and cactus. Its unique location, mounted in the “V” of two streets creates a panoramic, aesthetically pleasing view. “A must-see as you enter central Bartica from the Potaro.”

The word PEACE is made from steel plates for durability and supported by hallow section metal. “Most heartening is the corporate support received for this initiative. Every stage of the project was supported by the people of Bartica,” Marshall noted.

In the not too distant future, he said solar lights will be added to enhance the visibility of the PEACE sign at nights.

United Bridge Builders Mission stands up for the vulnerable

ONE Guyanese non-profit organisation is aiding in the fight to stand up for the vulnerable and the less fortunate in Guyana.

Head of the United Bridge Builders Mission, Bonita Montaque during an interview with Pepperpot Magazine disclosed that the organisation is working with families and individuals to ensure that solutions are sought.

Among the organisation’s focus is ensuring that persons facing issues of domestic violence, child abuse and skills training for youths are given attention to reduce the number of victims as well as the instances of these issues in society.

During the interview, Montaque also disclosed that organisation was registered in 2012, and initially worked in conjunction with the National AIDS Programme assisting persons, who were afflicted with the deadly disease.

According to Montaque, the newly registered organisation had its central headquarters in Region Six (East

“We started in Region six, we worked on an empowering needs and wheels programme because we knew that based on needs and assessment of persons who were affected, [they] were unable to keep a job, they were hungry many days and their children also suffered the same fate, thus resulting in their children weren’t go-

ing to school,” the director told Pepperpot Magazine.

As a result of this, the organisation provided hot meals for children in the community and skills training programmes to allow vocational skills enhancement.

Bonita Montaque candidly noted that being a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence, it was important to incorporate into her organisa-

tion the type of training that would be able to deal with these two issues.

“Over the years, we continued to work providing scholarship various persons, including children who were HIV positive. There are at least 25 persons who are graduates of the University of Guyana who are beneficiaries of the organisation’s training programmes,” Montaque told

In response to addressing the need to provide support for battered and abused women, the organization has not only set up shelters, but also organised and participated in national marches, walks and rallies. They have also looked after the orphans of murdered women, and women who commit suicide by providing support for those children.

The organisation over the years has received funding for its operations through fundraising events, donations and personal inputs from their families.

Nevertheless, according to Montaque, the financial challenges facing the organisation are insurmountable since the demands of the organisation require persons to volunteer their time and commitment.

The director is advocating for support in the further continuation of the programmes held by her organisation as part of her future plans.

Future Plans “We would like to have operations in several regions

in the country and necessary funding to be able to build our building. During the previous administration, efforts were made to get the land on which to build our building, so we are hoping that we can support instead of renting buildings for rates that we cannot afford,” Bonita disclosed.

Also on the agenda are activities for youths and children.

Montaque made mention of the fact that she and her organisation work closely with the Child Protection Agency and its Director to facilitate programmes that speak to the development of Children.

The organisation through its director revealed that it wants to have more transformative and rehabilitation programmes as part of its plans.

Churches, mosques, temples and community-based organisations and others need to get on board to solve issues and positively change and impact lives for the betterment of the nation’s youths and children, she said.

Green Valley Village A scenic paradise

By Michel Outridge THIS week the Pepperpot Magazine journeyed to Green Valley Village which is located in Wismar, Linden and it is indeed a very green valley with an abundance of trees, fruits, vegetables and vegetation.

This village goes uphill, downhill and then there is the valley, home to about 200 Guyanese mainly of Afro descent.

Despite heavy rainfall, the team managed to get to the village where there are no all-weather roads just a makeshift walkway in and out of the village with many shortcuts that go up, downhill and throughout the valley.

There are many one-person tracks that lead to houses and most are at an elevated position

and not easy to traverse especially in the wet season when it is very slippery.

Green Valley is a lovely scenic place that is very peaceful and the people are very welcoming, friendly but reserved.

The small community is located in the middle of Silvertown, Half-Mile and Wismar Housing Scheme.

According to elders in the village, Green Valley was once uninhabited and was used as a dumpsite then some places were cleared of vegetation and drains were dug and after land clearing, people began occupying the place.

Over the years the village got some basic necessities and the village has two large natural springs with several smaller

ones and before they got potable water supply that water was used for consumption.

Although there are no major flooding, accumulation of water happens in the valley when it rains heavily and the small drains cannot accommodate the water that flows into the valley from the highland.

Apart from these issues the people have none other and at times there is some disagreement among the residents but they would eventually resolve them and move forward.

By Michel Outridge T H E small community of Green Valley, Wismar, Linden is not void of talented residents, who haven’t had the opportunity to fully realise their expertise through formal training but they are still making their mark in their village.

One such resident is Kevin Thomas, who is a selftaught artist, who specialises in portraits among other drawings.

At a very young age, Thomas realised he was gifted in drawings but never thought he was good enough to make it his livelihood until he began being complimented by his teachers and others, who have seen his work.

It dawned on Thomas that he can make it as an artist and began watching videos and participated in online group tutorials on Facebook.

The 26-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that he never received any formal

training but would like to become a student of the E.R. Burrowes School of Arts to sharpen his drawings skills.

Due to a lack of resources and distance, he was unable to do so but continued to draw at home where he made it a ‘side hustle’.

Thomas has been a registered nurse attached to the Linden Hospital Complex for the past three years because he had the opportunity right in Linden to become a nurse, he was always fascinated with being in the medical field.

“When my grandfather became ill and I used to take care of him, then I realised that this was my true calling to become a healthcare provider and I wanted to become a nurse and applied and was successful,” he said.

Over the years, he has been practising drawings on and off but would still watch videos online to ensure he was still versed to continue.

“In school, I always liked

to draw and the drawings were really good and I developed myself to become better at it and blossomed as I matured and even though my immediate family members aren’t artists, my uncle and a cousin have the same talent so I guess it’s within the family tree,” he said.

Thomas began honing his self-taught skills fully in 2002. He began taking some work mostly portraits and when his customers were pleased he knew he had to try harder.

This young man would also do paintings and clay sculptures and in his spare time, he would explore the possibilities right from his home in Green Valley, a close-knit village.

Thomas explained that paintings are more expensive and most people can’t afford to pay for them so he would try to keep his prices pocket-friendly.

to have to display in one’s house and some people would seek me out to have their portrait done and pay for it,” he said.

His work is somewhat known in Linden but as news of his work spreads even further he is hoping to etch his name in society and so far, he is very proud of his achievements and the praises he has received.

“Whenever people prise my work it encourages me to

keep on going and I need that kind of positive motivation,” he said.

The soap and candle maker of Green Valley Brandy Esbees is also a resident of Green Valley and has her small business of soap and candle making.

The 20-year-old reported that after her mother completed a soap and candle making course she used to watch her do it and after

some practice, she started it on her own small operation.

Today, she would assist in making the soaps and candles while her mother would sell the products at their stall at McKenzie.

“I wanted to work but could not get a job so I decided to develop my skills at home and started to make soaps and candles to earn,” she said.

A vision to transform Linden Mayor passionate about education, volunteerism and developing the town

THE Mayor of Linden, Waneka Arindell is a mother, a mayor, a teacher, a wife and a volunteer, tasks that are cut out for her and it is quite an uphill undertaking but she is not fazed and is up for the challenge and whatever else comes with these titles.

Arindell has been residing in Green Valley Village for the past 16 years and she is originally from Wisroc, Wismar.

She told the Pepperpot Magazine that even though she took a while to be integrated into the village the people have the community spirit and they are cooperative.

Arindell added that what is known about Green Valley is that it is a mined-out area that is not regularised and has two large natural springs and many smaller ones, a hilltop and a valley.

The mother of three relocated to Green Valley after marriage, her husband is a local and it has become her home, a place that needs just the right bit of development.

Arindell stated that Green Valley Village is small with just about 50 houses and not more than 200 residents, most of whom have lived their entire life in the valley and there are hardly any newcomers.

“This is a quiet place and it is tranquil and even if there is discord among the people it is settled quickly because they want development in the village, they call home,” she said.

The Mayor stated that in Green Valley there are a lot of teachers and other public servants because there are no other job opportunities to explore.

She disclosed that in Linden in general there is a high level of unemployment and getting a job often means leaving the region.

“After completing University of Guyana in 2002 I didn’t have a stable government job until 2016 when I got employment with the Mayor and Town Council of Linden,” she said.

This is her fourth year as Mayor and she believes that others should be trained to become mayors as well after a few years because that is the only way they can foster development and allow others to broaden their scope.

Arindell revealed that being a woman mayor is not easy because it is a role often dominated by men and when they took over the Mayor and Town Council of Linden after 10 years it was managed by an Interim Management Committee and the foundation was built from scratch and it is what is today.

She disclosed that there are a total of 40,000 people that reside in Linden alone and there are 40 villages within Region SEE PAGE XXIV

Laurel is 72 years old and was a manager of the then DEMBA Power Company, who retired and is enjoying rearing some black giant chickens and layer birds, as well as, tending to his crops of celery, calaloo and numerous plants and fruit trees in his yard.

He is originally from Parika, East Bank Essequibo and after he completed his formal secondary education he was job hunting and his first job was at the Linden Power Company, as such, he moved to Linden for work.

It was after sometime, he met and later married his long-time girlfriend, Eileen Michael, who is also from Parika and she too relocated to Linden, the couple eventually constructed a house in Green Valley.

“Green Valley as you can see is name and nature because of its greenery, around here people don’t cut down trees and we have all kinds of fruits and vegetables so we are self-sufficient, growing our own food and eating fresh,’ he said.

Laurel added that he doesn’t buy greens and fruits since it is plentiful in Green Valley and the people would share their produce.

“I have 11 hens so I would pick up about eight eggs per day and I would sell the eggs and pluck the chickens, that is, the meat birds and sell it right here in the community and plant a few crops, almost every month is would get a bunch of bananas or plantains so life is reasonably good here,” he said.

Laurel told the Pepperpot Magazine that Green valley is home for him and he also took the time to reminisce yesteryear stories where he used to spin his toy, a ‘buck top’ which he displayed and talked about the value of those toys in those days compared to what the children of today have.

The Michaels are well-respected elders in the village and are well known among their peers as the people, who made a name for themselves.

Eileen is 69 years old and these days she is tending to grandchildren and engaged in the cooking and household chores.

She was a teacher attached to Blake Primary School for five years but after marriage, she exited the profession and became a stay-at-home mother when the children came along.

Her daughter, Colleen Michael-Joseph is the headteacher attached to Wisburg Secondary School and two other daughters are also teachers as well as, her daughterin-law.

So it is safe to say most of the women in the Michael family are teachers while the men are doing different jobs.

Eileen is a very pleasant woman who likes Green Valley and her life there in Linden where she finds peace and quiet.

From Camp Street to the Demerara River, the wall had become disfigured by an accumulation of unsightly garbage and no one assumed the responsibility of cleaning it. A homeless man, Carl Melville, who sometimes slept there was noticed by Dwayne Hackett trying to clean the garbage and immediately volunteered to help him. Hackett placed the incident on social media and immediately numbers of persons volunteered their services.

First Lady Arya Ali was one of the first to volunteer and the Ministry of Public Works, the Director of Solid Waste Department of the Georgetown City Council and the Fire Service became involved with her. The Fire Service cleaned the bandstand and in a few days all the garbage was removed and Seawalls appeared as if they had always been maintained! Many have been high in their praises of this example of civic responsibility.

THE GHOST CHILD

THE little girl sat on the garden swing, her head bent, her hair falling loosely over her face. She sat waiting as little unholy creatures danced and played around her.

They sang songs and chanted her name, but she was unmoved for soon they’ll be gone as night retreated. In the day as they slept she would leave the throne they had designed for her – their princess, a throne she hated for it held her captive to live in their world.

The sun’s ray filtering through the overgrown trees and thick, wild shrubs touched the child sitting alone in a place that seemed to have been abandoned, a long time ago. The little girl raised her head and as the sunshine brought colour to her pale cheeks and warmth to her cold skin, she opened her eyes and smiled. She was dressed for church in a pink frilly dress, stockings, shoes and her little pink bag. She slid off the swing and walking to the foot of the stairs she called, “Mom, dad, I’m ready.”

No one answered, no one had been answering for a long time.

“Where are you?” she asked quietly, “Why have you left me here all alone?”

She couldn’t cry for she had no more tears, just sadness on her pretty little face. Such a long time since that cold, dark night when the light from her eyes faded and her cheeks became pale.

“Where are you mom?” she whispered. “Please come for me.”

She passed through the rusted, wrought iron gate and waited for the neighbours, walking with them to church but no one knew she was there. No one could see the little girl who had died twelve years ago from a mysterious illness none of the doctors could have diagnosed.

People had spoken about strange voices and presences in the dead of the night but Madeline’s family, unbelievers of the supernatural had dismissed those tales. As her heartbeats became less and she became paler, she had whispered incoherently about the strange little creatures with piercing eyes, dancing and laughing around her.

The family had sat at her bedside in the hospital, praying until the last moment but could not save her. Broken by grief at the loss of their little girl, they had drifted away one by one. A house that was once filled with love, light, warmth and comfort was now empty, dark and cold. Things, not human continued to live there, holding captive, the little girl’s soul so she could not ascend to heaven.

If only her family had belief if only her grandfather had not adopted those beings to prosper and become wealthy from their evil magic. He had passed away, taking with him his secret, not knowing that it was something that had to be passed on to the young generation. The family unaware of the ungodly entities the grandfather had dealings with eventually paid a heavy price for their ignorance and reluctance to believe.

The little girl, the darling of the family was the price.

She played alone in the house with her Barbie dolls, no one to invite to her tea parties and fashion shows and in the afternoons she stood on the street corner, the ghost child, watching everyone pass by, hoping someone could see her, so her family could know she was still there.

No one did and at dusk, every day, she would return to the house for they were always waiting.

Close to December, on a tepid afternoon, standing at the street’s corner, she heard a voice behind her call her name in a surprised tone, “Madeline.”

Madeline spun around and stared unbelievingly at the beautiful woman standing there with dark brown hair.

“Did she just call my name?” she wondered.

Madeline glanced back to see if there was someone else there, the woman was talking to but no one else was there, no one else was at the street corner.

“Madeline.” She called her name again, “How is it you’re still here?”

“You can see me?”

“Yes, I can.”

“How can no one else see me, all this time and a stranger can? Are you a ghost too? Did the evil creatures get you?”

“I’m not a stranger, I’m your friend, Anjalie.”

Madeline looked at her closer, “You can’t be, Anjalie is little like me.”

“Yes, but you died Madeline. I did not. That’s why I’m grown up.”

Woman and girl stared at each other for a long moment, agony in Anjanie’s heart and opening her palm, she showed Madeline, a white turtle dove.

“You gave me this for Christmas.”

Madeline gasped.

“Anjanie…oh it’s really you, my best friend! Where did you go? I missed you.”

“I’m so sorry Madeline, I couldn’t bear it that you died

and was gone, and I cried until I fell ill.”

Anjanie had fallen sick since the tragedy because of her deep grief and her family afraid she may meet the same faith as Madeline had sent her overseas.

Now she was back for the first time.

She had visited her friend’s grave, still grieved at her untimely death and coming to her old home, she was stunned when she saw her ghostly form at the street corner.

“How come you’re not afraid to talk to me?”

“I don’t know, maybe it’s because I missed you so much and I’m so happy to see you.”

No one else was at the street corner for those few moments to witness the strange reunion of two best friends – both in their own worlds.

They talked for a long while more as Madeline related her story to Anjanie.

“I’ve been waiting so long. Can you find my family and tell them?”

“Sure I will.” Anjanie promised her.

The creatures were very angry, they knew and that night they vented their anger by screams, horrible screams that sent shivers down the spines of those who heard. Madeline could not leave anymore, not even in the day for not even a ray of sunlight shone through the trees anymore. People converged in front of the house, talking in low whispers, they had known all along that evil lived in that manor, secluded now by thick, non-flowering trees. Anjanie found her friend’s family and two days later they showed up, visibly disturbed at the story of evil in their home that was spreading like wildfire and their little girl’s ghost. After twelve long years, now the child was seeing her mother and father who had aged so much, and her sister and brother now adults. But no one could enter, the creatures wouldn’t allow it. It was now their home and the child was repayment for their grandfather’s debts, she now belonged to them.

“Madeline.” Her mother called, “We’re so sorry my baby, so sorry we didn’t believe, we have come now to free you.”

“Thank you, mom” she whispered in her mind, and at her father’s request, she kicked her ball, that hit the gate so they could know that she had heard them.

To exorcise the evil that had been living there so long, was not at all easy but days and nights of prayer sessions by renowned pastors defeated and banished the evil creatures.

Madeline’s soul was now free to ascend to heaven with the angels and sunlight streamed through the trees as she bid her family goodbye. They would not leave again but stay and restore the old house in her memory.

She smiled at her friend, “If you hadn’t returned and could not have seen me, I would still be in those creatures’ captive.”

“It was God’s will, Madeline,” she said, tears in her eyes.

“Thank you so much my friend, goodbye.”

“Goodbye Madeline.”

Madeline took the hands of the angels and looking back one last time at the people she loved so much, she ascended to Heaven.

Green Valley...

FROM PAGEVI they are managed by the Community Development Council (CDC) which is headed by Randolph Arindell, who is married to Linden’s Mayor, Waneka Arindell.

Even though development in this community is slow they have seen some over the years and they are somewhat contented.

There are not many shops in Green Valley and people would often leave the village to neighbouring villages to buy supplies for

their everyday use and utilise the services in other villages, as well. At the entrance of the village, there is the Wismar Post Office, a nursery school and a community centre ground.

There are about 50 houses most of which sit comfortably uphill and in the valley, small concrete structures that are well-painted and look like they are right out of a storybook.

The people told the Pepperpot Magazine that the village is small but peaceful and they are at home and have no desire to move.

Most of the villagers are locals who lived all their lives in the valley.

Even those who married into Green Valley are comfortable and seem very much integrated into the village.

The people of Green Valley do not buy coconuts or most fruits and vegetables since they are grown in the community which is blessed with fertile soil and in almost every yard there is an abundance of fruits and vegetables which is shared within the village.

It is a place where cashews, plums and whatever

fruit is in season is left to rot on the ground because it is very plentiful. Green Valley is also home to the Mayor of Linden, Waneka Arindell and many public servants who are nurses, teachers, managers, police, soldiers and other skilled folks.

Due to the rapid unemployment rate in Green Val-

ley, a lot young people have left the village to seek jobs in the city and elsewhere while some elders have passed away and there are only a handful of senior citizens enjoying the ripe age of retirement.

Green Valley is an agriculture-based village but the produce is not sold but is is

used in the kitchen or given away among villagers.

The village isn’t yet regularised and land titles haven’t seen handed out even though some villagers have paid.

The only other valley in Wismar is Victory Valley which is called ‘The valley of tears’.

William,s like most women in Green Valley, is at home and after a year they are finding things to do to occupy their time even though they would like normalcy again like returning to school.

She is originally from Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway and after marriage, Green Valley became her home, a peaceful, quiet place for raising children and a good family life.

Williams added that the village is small but developments such as street lights, and an all-weather access road are needed since they only have one and it is in a bad condition.

Williams would tutor children in her spare time from home and would engage in her share of online classes via Zoom and the virtual learning platforms from Mondays to Fridays.

Meanwhile, there is also another village, Hazel Stephens, a stay-at-home mother of six, who is a local of Green Valley.

She lives in a lovely blue-painted concrete house that sits comfortably on the hill overlooking the valley, from there, it is a fantastic

view.

Stephens told the Pepperpot Magazine that she has spent all of her 44 years in Green Valley, the only place she knows and that is home for her. She related that three of her six children are grown and have left home to pursue their careers while the three small ones are at home.

She, too, has been at home without a job for the past year due to the virus the work she had closed off.

“Being at home isn’t a bother for me because I have things to do at home to occupy my time and I like living here, it is home and I wouldn’t leave this place to live anywhere else,” she said.

Stephens reported that there are no thieves in Green Valley and it is a place where they do not buy certain things like coconuts and eddoes leaf among others because there is an abundance of it all over.

The Pepperpot Magazine also met Petra Lewis, another stay-at-home resident, who was in the process of hanging out the laundry despite the heavy rainfall that day.

The 36-year-old explained that she quit her job at Massive Inn, Old

Kara Kara, McKenzie Shore, a year ago because of COVID-19.

She has been residing in Green Valley for two years and has a lot to do at home because she feels at peace.

“This place don’t get a lot of visitors so when new people come we recognise that right away but we don’t mind, the people are friendly and we get along well,” she said.

In her yard there are plenty of fruit trees such as star apple, pear, cherries among others and she would share with neighbours when it is too much for the home.

Lewis added that if she doesn’t have a reason to leave home, she wouldn’t and doesn’t mind being at home.

The Pepperpot Magazine encountered Dolores Gibbons, she is a stay-at-home mother, who sells cold beverages from her home.

In her yard, there is a natural spring and anyone can visit to have their water bottles filled since it is the same water residents continue to use for consumption with worry.

The 51-year-old is a plain-spoken individual, who is well-known in the community.

We need actions of women empowerment from businesses, not hashtags and cute slogans “FEMVERTISING” is an advertising strategy that is used by businesses to promote goods and services using pro-women messages. This is done to empower women and girls by encouraging gender equality, while disregarding traditional stereotypes of women. Women empowerment has gained popularity in recent years, especially on the scenes of social media. Femvertising is no stranger to certain businesses, as the sales of their products rely on this strategy. I am a firm believer in advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment, but quite frankly, I do not appreciate substance-lacking exploitative advertising strategies.

You should not hijack a meaningful movement just to gain a few coins. The brand Dove had a campaign on #SpeakBeautiful; an advertisement project that shared pictures of women before and after they were edited in efforts to help women and girls with body-image issues. The brand Covergirl has its #GirlsCan campaign that showcases how the possibilities are endless with what girls can achieve. These brands/businesses alongside many others promote some form of women empowerment through the use of their products and surely enough, some of these advertisements and business models would make one’s eyes teary because of the messages behind them. Sadly, that’s all they do. They make us tear up, but how do they really help women? Do these businesses donate or give back to disadvantaged women? Do the owners or administration practise their girl-power slogans in real life?

Or, is it all simply a facade?

Don’t get me wrong, some businesses utilise femvertising because they genuinely want to empower women and girls through the use of their business models. However, on the same side of the coin, some businesses use this as a means to simply gain a profit through a “trendy” movement. They are not partners of women empowerment, they are merely allies of click-bait marketing strategies camouflaged as otherwise.

Women have already been exploited for centuries. Now, our “allies” are trying to gain off of the very movements that were created to help us fight against such exploitations and oppression, to begin with. Sigh.

While femvertising can be a good business strategy, is it also a good advocacy strategy? At the end of the day, who benefits more from Femvertising? Is it really the oppressed woman who cannot afford to buy the very product that is being advertised because she is underpaid? Or, is it the business entities who benefit from the advertisements that reflect the oppressive state of the said woman? Advocacy and activism should not stop at slogans and hashtags.

These slogans are not really helping real women facing real situations of oppressions. There is much more work left to be done.

Environmental Monitoring and Compliance

WHENEVER you notice the staff of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) going into the field with their cameras, notepads, noise meters and other equipment, you might be wondering, why are they there?

Officers of the Agency are empowered by the Environmental Protection Act, Cap 20:05, Laws of Guyana and its Regulations to MONITOR how development projects are impacting the environment.

Compliance-monitoring is a critical part of environmental management. Once conducted properly, compliance-monitoring will lead to the early detection of environmental issues and non-compliance to prevent any long-term damage to the environment and human health.

Additionally, monitoring ensures the effectiveness and efficiency of activities of businesses and development projects. This is so, since information is gathered which can be used to track changes occurring in the environment as a project progresses. Therefore, developers and persons responsible for the changes occurring are notified on time if something is going wrong and therefore, they will be able to address the issue, improving their quality of work.

Before any activity that is likely to have an impact on the environment commences, an authorisation from the EPA has to be issued in the form of an Environmental Permit. To have this, the agency must be provided with a description of the project, including the foreseen negative and positive impacts on the environment and mitigation measures to address the negative impacts.

Once a permit is issued, compliance-monitoring is scheduled by the EPA to ensure that these permit conditions are implemented, and, of course, to determine how effective and efficient they are. Some of the parameters that are monitored include air and water quality, noise levels, waste and land-management techniques. There are specific parameter limits that need to be followed to ensure that there is little negative environmental impact.

The tests and observations conducted by the EPA in the field will reveal the level of compliance with these limits.

To ensure that our natural resources are kept unharmed, the EPA conducts regular compliance visits.

The authorisation given to conduct economic and developmental activities can be granted for various periods, with the maximum being five years, after which it would have to be renewed. However, before it is renewed, the EPA is required to carry out compliance-monitoring to ensure that the project site is in order. It should be noted that development projects will carry out self-monitoring yearly and submit an annual report of their findings to the agency.

The importance of compliance-monitoring cannot be emphasised enough. Through this process, businesses and other development projects can benefit along SEE PAGE XIX

“Mr. Ming started as someone who supported my athletic journey but quickly became family. After I got my scholarship he still supported me. He always wanted the best for me. The best included getting my degree which was as important to him as my running.”

We all should have a desire to make a difference in others’ lives. When you achieve that you will have a legacy that will never die and Colin has achieved that.

“You don’t replace someone like Colin. We just have to hope someone comes along who comes close,” Dave Martin wrote on FB. I would certainly say Stanley and him have the same DNA and heart to serve humanity, no matter what.

They both are awesome mentors and role models.

We made pacts to work together to see the first pro golfer from Guyana. He is no longer here with us, but I am sure we can work together because it is possible for Guyana to have not just one, but many.

Let’s be thankful for every breath we are privileged to have, because we can easily take for granted that the next breath will be there. oral health being no different, it seems to me that it is logical to advise the regular readers of this column to make a renewed resolution concerning their dental

health, and they can easily do this after assimilating basic facts on oral hygiene.

Many of the foods you eat cause the bacteria in your mouth to produce acids. Sugared foods, such as candy and cookies are not the only culprits. Starches, such as bread, crackers and cereal, also cause acids to form. If you snack often, you could be having acid attacks, your teeth may decay. All these are accommodated by the sticky film that the teeth and gums harbour, which is called plaque.

Plaque also produces substances that irritate the gums, making them red, tender or bleed easily (gingivitis). After a while, gums may pull away from the teeth. Pockets form and fill with more bacteria and pus. If the gums are not treated,

the bone around the teeth can be destroyed (periodontitis).

The teeth may become loose or have to be removed. In fact, this gum disease is a main cause of tooth loss in adults.

One way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease is by eating a balanced diet and limiting the number of between-meal snacks. If you need a snack, choose nutritious foods such as raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese or a piece of fruit.

The best way to remove decay-causing plaque is by brushing and cleaning between your teeth every day.

Arindell reported that in Linden they have two mines and two valleys and her goal is to transform Linden into a tourist destination since it is indeed a beautiful place and to have more open spaces such as parks and recreational facilities.

She added that things can be done to clean up the place a bit and several projects are being undertaken to beautify the township.

The mayor opined that to provide employment for locals in Linden the de-centralisation of industries should take place and it is time to look beyond politics to meet the needs of the people.

Arindell stated that there are eight constituencies in Linden and the people are desperate for equal opportunities as it relates to employment and facilities.

She added that there is also the need for thinking outside the box when it comes to entrepreneurship to promote more service-based businesses.

“The lack of jobs in Linden has forced a lot of people out the town and some remained and started their own small businesses that are often stagnant because of the economic hardships,” she said.

Arindell noted that she would like to see Linden become a model town, a place where both locals and tourists can visit to enjoy the scenery and the warmth of the people since they are rich in culture, sports, resources and it is the perfect location for tourist adventures such as bird watching, sight-seeing, the lakes, mines and many other outdoor activities.

Presently a synthetic track is being constructed in Wismar and they have an indoor basketball court, they have an under-utilised airstrip and the people have so much to offer in terms of local arts, craft and products.

The Mayor and Town Council has 15 councillors and the administrative staff and Arindell said she has learned a lot since she took office but there is still so much to be done to develop Linden.

Volunteerism Meanwhile, there is a softer, more benevolent side to the mayor, who is a volunteer within Linden and is presently engaged in activities to make the stay of 17 girls from the Haurauni Girls Home comfortable.

These girls are housed in Richmond Hill and they haven’t been out for a year and the mayor and others decided to brighten their lives by hosting them for the extended Easter weekend in Linden.

The lot was treated to kite flying, ice cream, treats, sigh-seeing and other tours, meals were prepared by the mayor and others and the girls were feted fully.

In addition, counselling session and other motivational talks took place where the mayor and others including, religious leaders were present to make their contribution to the girls.

The mayor related that some of the girls have attained the age of 18 and they are in the process of putting in place a contingency plan to have these teens re-integrated into society.

The school teacher Arindell is also a teacher at the Wisburg Secondary School and holds a degree in Geography and is a Social Studies teacher who is very passionate about literacy.

She is attached to Grade Seven and would participate in virtual teaching as well, as classrooms sessions at least twice weekly.

Arindell reported that online learning has been very challenging because the students haven’t been receptive in most instances because it doesn’t have the face to face impact as in a classroom setting.

“The hardest part of being a teacher is having to teach at school and online then going home to teach your own children,” she said.

Juggling all these titles hasn’t been easy on the mayor, who is often engaged in meetings in the office setting and still have to return home to do chores and cooking.

“I managed because I have a good support system and love being an educator since I still have to earn and with COVID-19 it has been some trying times coping,” she said.

Arindell would also lend support to assist children to read and slow learners and presently she has taken in a young boy to tutor him at her home.

With his continuing efforts and the support of his loving wife Ingrid, John “Slingshot” Drepaul will most likely be out of his wheelchair, singing and dancing as before, for his many fans, improving the quality of life for the Guyanese people and others.

Anjalena, therefore, had to include her kids in everything that she was doing.

Eventually, she began studying Autism and learnt Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). She made her way to the Melmark Autism School in Massachusetts, and took courses at several other schools.

Having worked for 11 years at the Step by Step Foundation, she decided to start her own practice. “I did not want Sameir to settle where he was. I wanted more for him and also to help more children. You’re limited in what you can do when you work with people,” Anjalena said. Though she has a private clinic at her home, her work is overseen by clinical doctor Jim Ellis and speech pathologist Kerry Davis, both overseas-based.

Anjalena visits about seven children with Autism in their homes and has about 11 coming for therapy at her clinic.

Put the child first Bringing up Sameir and his two sisters was no walk in the park for Anjalena. She recalls that everything seemed chaotic at one point, but the best thing she could have done was to put her children’s interests first.

“I had very long days and nights,” she recalled, adding, “I would sleep late in the nights as I had to do certain things after Sameir went to sleep. When he got very upset, I would See Page XXXI

calm him down by putting him in a tub with water while I did my work around him. It was really hard to see him struggle like that.”

Simple things like using the toilet, brushing his teeth and sitting down to eat became difficult, frustrating tasks.

But this never kept Anjalena from being the best parent she could to Sameir. In fact, she calls him a blessing to her life and credits him for all that she can do today to help other families with special needs children.

“I still struggle with parents who don’t want people to know they have a child with special needs. That means you’re more focused on yourself and not on your child who needs the help. It’s ok to have a child with special needs; it’s not the end of the child’s life or the end of the world,” she remarked.

She further advised: “Be patient with your children and don’t have too many expectations. Show them what you want and teach them multiple times because they may not be capable of copying you in their actions.”

Meanwhile, according to the CDC, people with ASD often have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviours and might not want change in their daily activities. Many people with ASD also have different ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to things. Signs of ASD begin during early childhood and typically last throughout a person’s life.

While there is currently no cure for ASD, the CDC said research shows that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development. ASD occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, but is about 4 times more common among boys than among girls.

All of the causes of ASD are not known, but the CDC said there may be many different factors that make a child more likely to have an ASD, including environmental, biological and genetic factors.

training of Parliamentarians so that a semblance of decorum could be maintained in the National Assembly. It is envisioned that such training sessions would also help to guide the officials on proper parliamentary procedures.

But also, these events should force us to reconsider what we expect and accept from our elected officials -- all of them-- while they discharge their responsibilities towards us.

Are they articulating our collective values when they make racist, sexist, homophobic, and other derogatory statements?

Are they adequately representing us and our best interests at all times?

‘When yuh don’t hear, yuh does feel’ ‘When yuh don’t hear, yuh does feel’ is a saying that was often used to chastise me while growing up. Now that I am an adult who understands that flouting the COVID-19 guidelines puts the lives of scores of people at risk, this saying has taken a whole new meaning.

As per the gazetted COVID-19 guidelines, we have a curfew in place from 22:30hrs (10:30 PM) to 04:00hrs (4 AM) and there is a litany of restrictions on social gatherings, including at cinemas, funerals, clubs, inter alia. These guidelines -- though tweaked now and then to suit the country’s response to the pandemic -- were instituted since March, last year. Still, there is this seemingly pervasive sense of apathy towards taking the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the grim effects of the pandemic.

I do not believe that we have thoroughly appreciated the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has. In the first six days of April alone, 13 deaths were recorded. It does not seem like a lot, but in the first year of COVID-19, we recorded just about 218 deaths. Beyond the health impact, the disruption caused in every sector of society -- from schools to workplaces -- is evident. Now, we are contending with a mutated form of the virus -- the highly contagious P1 variant in Brazil, that, according to the country’s health experts, is currently wreaking havoc there.

Even more incredulously is that this variant appears to be impacting many more younger persons now.

Infectious disease physician Dr. Rosana Richtman told the ABC News, “It’s very clear that the transmission is much, much higher. The age of the population that our patients are with the disease is, they are younger, they are younger with severe disease.”

Other international reports stated that the Brazilian health care system is on the brink of collapse, since most Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are at or near capacity, leaving many to suffer on waiting lists. Life-saving medication and oxygen supplies are running dangerously low; since last year, the country has recorded well over 300,000 deaths.

I make it a point of emphasising the Brazilian situation to illustrate that the grim effects of this pandemic are not occurring thousands of miles away, but right over in a country we share a porous border with. There is a very real possibility that this variant can spread to Guyana SEE PAGE XXXIII

Is it that we believe that COVID does not affect us or our loved ones? Is it that we do not care? Or, is it that only when we lose someone we love or the continuing pandemic forces workplaces to downsize again, will we understand the pandemic’s severity?

If we did appreciate the severity of the pandemic, these clandestine parties and gatherings would not be as popular and rampant as they are. Just last weekend -- Easter weekend -- a total of 140 persons were reportedly arrested after they were found in various bars and entertainment spots later than the 22:30hrs national curfew that has been instituted to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. On Easter Monday, a handful of videos surfaced, showing the sheer numbers of persons who flouted these guidelines and who voiced their displeasure in incomprehensible ways -- like the partygoer claiming that he was “kidnapped by the army.”

The day after, a large number of persons were again arrested. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had to barricade the seawall and national parks just so that persons would not be gathering in their numbers. Now, the act of flying kites and enjoying Easter picnics with family members are inherent, ‘social-distanced’ activities. Yet, they were prohibited because of how negligent we have been in adhering to the simple guidelines meant to keep us safe. This is the situation we are now confronted by.

While growing up, I also heard the saying “Stricter the government, wiser the population” quite often. Usually, that saying was accompanied by family members, friends or neighbours pleading for some leniency on my behalf, because my parents were strict. But nowadays that saying has found new meaning in the novel ways persons have been able to evade the COVID-19 guidelines. Some amount of opposition is expected, but the magnitude at which these guidelines are being flouted is incomprehensible to me. It appears as though we are simply a reckless and irresponsible bunch of people.

Now that the national enforcement efforts have been stepped up, it is up to each of us to recognise our responsibility. Wearing a mask, sanitising often, and avoiding gatherings are choices we can make to reduce the spread of the virus. We have to be intentional about our efforts to protect against COVID-19.

By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile your entire life. Follow these tips to keep your teeth and mouth clean.

How do you brush your teeth correctly?

1. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.

2. Move the brush back and forth gently in short (toothwide) strokes.

3. Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

4. Use the “toe” of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke.

5. Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

How do you floss your teeth correctly?

1. Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. The finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

2. Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.

3. When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

4. Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up and down motions.

5. Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth.

6. Don’t forget the backside of your last tooth.

In the ‘70s there were no TVs, no cellphones, no internet, Netflix was at Globe, Strand, Metropole, Rio, etc. So in that simpler time, the rest of stuff came in most cases when the home-building revolution entered the ‘bachie.’ I’m talking about the girlfriend at that age of not-so-much innocence.

You’ll not buy the next pair of Clarkes, you’ll put down on a solid bed at Fogarty’s, then grumbling you’ll be bullied into buying nice sheets, fewer picnics at Profitt’s place and Carib Front and that’s how in many cases how it began, a life of responsibility. Today the average young person is naturally mesmerised by where technology in a miraculous speed has taken us, way beyond our economic means. We’re no longer competing with the ‘Joneses,’ we’re competing with the IBMs, the DELLs, the categories of GTT’s Blaze, and 100 other names we really can’t compete with as a nation, much less as individuals.

Even if you’re an Artisan retiree resurrecting a passion of owning a small exclusive furniture establishment, you need to put your stuff on social media, so you need a smartphone or a laptop, soon you’ll learn about the levels of following expenses, virus protection, etc. Don’t for one moment think that I’m bashing technology, it has enhanced everything, but it has commanded big changes.

Then most of the children aren’t following our example of renting a room and establishing territory.

They’re still at home, they want independence, but the rent-a-room idea is not too good for the naive, unexposed young women, and the young men want what seems to be the illusionary ‘Living Kit’ of our age. They do not want to rent a ‘Bachie,’ that term revolves around a Spartan challenge. They want a ‘Crib,’ because like babies they need to lean on mom and dad who are faced with a world of more bills, and a new set of skill tools, for the customary ‘after retirement’ in this age ‘New career’ this topic needs more attention.

President Ali emphasised that his government would not ignore the interests of the workers as against private investors: “We are uncompromising when it comes to respecting our people, especially our workers. We insist the rights of our workers be respected and that investors comply with our labour laws.”

There is one important area on which the government has made no public pronouncement so far, that is, modernising of the country’s citizenship and immigration laws. With greater economic development there would be an influx of foreigners who could overwhelm the Guyanese identity; there are indications of such an influx with the number of persons applying for naturalisation and the numbers of foreigners settling in the border areas with Brazil and Venezuela. In modernising the citizenship and immigration laws, the experience of the USA and its laws in this regard could be instructive. For example, any person who wishes to live here should be conversant with the English Language and know the country’s history, especially in such areas as culture and the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy. There could also be a quota system as in the earlier American Legislation. Such an updating of the citizenship and immigration laws needs to be urgently undertaken.

cause stress. For example, if a person has to relocate when they do not want to, they can focus on the problem itself-- moving, what exactly needs to be done and how to cope with that.

The second is emotion-focused strategy, whereby the individual focuses on their emotions that the problem/stress has elicited. For example, if the aforementioned person is sad, angry and resentful for this relocation, they may focus on strategies that handle these feelings of distress.

I have always been partial to emotion-focused strategy as I am an emotional person. This means that at times, I let my emotions guide me and get the better of me (not always a good thing). I am also a firm believer in the saying, “Life is 90 percent what happens to us and 10 percent how we react to it.” However, this does not work for everyone and many people find the problem-focused strategy very beneficial.

So, what are some examples of good coping skills?

These of course depend on the individual. What relaxes, calms or excites you may not work for many others. If you have never thought about things that may work for you, here is a list to get you started. Try one or try them all! An important tip: do not just wait until you are feeling negative emotions to implement these into your life. If something is already a part of your routine, it will make it easier to remember to take part when you actually need it.

-Exercise -- any form -- dancing, team sports, punching bags, bicycles. This is not about weight loss, but rather, releasing positive endorphins.

- Keep a feelings journal. Writing is so therapeutic.

- Educate yourself- read about everything! For fun, even.

- Become artistic – draw, paint, colour, create or simply listen to music.

-Watch light-hearted movies/ T.V shows- we get enough drama from real life.

- Be social with the right people. Keep good and positive people around.

- Spend quality time with yourself. Really get to know and love who you are!

- Practise good self-care. This means taking the time to do things that make you feel good about yourself. This can be anything from reading to doing your nails/hair. When we are confident and feel good on the outside, we tend to also internalise these feelings.

- Try delegating – you don’t have to (and shouldn’t) do everything - Create and stick to a budget every day. Monetary issues cause a lot of stress.

- Build confidence, gratitude, positivity and optimism.

- Set new and realistic goals for yourself.

- Volunteer! Gain a sense of purpose and satisfaction by helping others.

- Practise forgiveness. This is for you, not anyone else.

- Focus on your religious/ spirituality practices (if you have any) - Learn to walk away. When you are overly stressed or angry – take some personal space. Unfortunately for us, problems do not just disappear. They will be there for us to tackle when we are ready to do so.

- Find someone you can trust and confide in them. It is okay if you feel you cannot cope on your own. Seeking professional help also counts as healthy coping. This helps you to become stronger (not weaker) when dealing with future stressors and challenging situations.

For whichever one you decide to try, make a note of whether it worked for you or it did not. If it didn’t, that’s okay - just try something else. If it does work, remember that it takes much practice to make it a regular exercise -don’t give up!

Some people dance those feelings, some people paint those feelings, and some sing those feelings.

COVID and family Culture How families’ lifestyles have changed since the pandemic

By Dillon Goring EVER since the novel coronavirus pandemic which was first detected in Wuhan, China, as early as late 2019, families have adjusted their ways of living.

The world over, including in Guyana, more and more families have learnt how to utilise technology to effectively communicate with each other.

One such family are the Moores, who spoke with the Pepperpot Magazine and gave some of the lessons they learnt during this pandemic.

“We learnt how to multi-task, particularly in our jobs; we learnt how to utilise Zoom to communicate with each other more frequently,” Paul Moore told Pepperpot Magazine.

Families in Guyana have adjusted themselves and are now able to spend more time with each other, thus cherishing precious times.

It should be noted that during this time, many families also invested in growing food in their own kitchen gardens.

Thus, families are eating healthier, and are also being more hygienic in their everyday practices.

The incomes of most families in Guyana have been

adjusted, since they are now contriving on buying the essentials for survival, rather than shopping excessively.

“As a family, we were always eating healthy, but now that there is COVID, we are even more health-conscious,” Paul Moore told Pepperpot Magazine.

Another family shared with the Pepperpot Magazine that there is more time that can be shared together.

“No longer is the urgency for arranged meetings with family members to do a family reunion, or have a celebratory moment in a family member’s life, you can now arrange a time to do it on the internet at a time convenient to both persons,” the family member said.

He also alluded to the fact that there is a larger attendance at church services as against prior COVID and persons are participating much more online than attending the physical service.

There is the perception that certain practices will remain long after the pandemic is over.

These include hygienic practices such as constant sanitising of the hands with hand sanitisers, social distancing and the wearing of face masks.

All across the country students became adjusted to the idea of doing classes differently.

Zoom classes, WhatsApp groups and the like now form the reality of students today.

There is now a greater dependency on electronic devices

now than ever amid the pandemic.

Based on these observances and the stories shared by various persons, it seems as though life‘s normalcy will certainly be different for years.
