Still building on his

‘dream’

IN THE MIDST of a modest neighbourhood, an exceptional haven stands in a brilliant glow even as the sun goes down upon the village of Annandale, on the East Coast Demerara corridor.

It is the peach palace, which some would say is the single most outstanding architecture along the low coastal plain which is occupied by hundreds of thousands of Guyanese. It nestles on Ram Singh Street, a ribbon corridor in a pleasing environment.

When Pepperpot Magazine visited the home which has become a tourist attraction in the 16 years since it has been constructed, it was indeed a beauty to behold.

Intricate designs stained in peach and gold and green and white, make up the

perpendicular stature which carries several small peaks to signal its limitation in height.

A massive unfinished addition was evident but made a pleasant compliment to the brightly coloured structure.

The owner of the fairytale castle told Pepperpot he became the architect of the masterpiece in pursuit of his childhood dream of living in one - a kind of luxury which was given to families of a royal kind.

He had seen some of the buildings before with his naked eyes during travels around the world.

Being imaginative and with a deep love for creative arts, Harry Seepersaud said: “I draw it out before and then I put it on paper.

Actually I am the contractor there too. No professional contractor ever worked on the building.”

He had never formally been educated in either architecture or any other form of construction but had learned drawing of structures in technical drawing class at secondary school.

He hired ordinary men with basic skills in an effort to demonstrate that getting it done was possible without the use of experts. This was after failed attempts at getting agreement from certified contractors for constructing his home the way he wanted.

“It’s an imagination. I always wanted to build something different from buildings that we see. A lot of contractors came, I give them the job (but) they always choose the easiest way out. And I take some regular people and get the job done and I show them how it can be done. Once they have basic skills I direct them how to go about doing things,” Seepersaud told this magazine.

He said he enjoyed working on the building’s design and played purely with his perfect ideas. He does not have much interest in designing other people’s homes because in doing so “you are not allowed full reign like your own. Their way is not always the best way.”

The building is complete with many of the fine amenities a castle affords but minus some of those which are designed for specific defensive purposes such as the curtain walls and arrow slits.

Wikipedia defined a palace as “a grand residence, especially a royal residence, or the home of a head of state or some other high-ranking dignitary.”

rope, the term is also applied to ambitious private mansions of the aristocracy, with many of the historic constructions now being used also as parliaments, museums, hotels or office buildings. The word is also sometimes used to describe a lavishly ornate building used for public entertainment or exhibitions The website defines a castle as “type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by European nobility… the private fortified residence of a lord or noble.”

Seepersaud said his first design of the palace was complete more than ten years ago, but he recently began another massive addition to the dream home.

“The first part of the building took about five years to complete. Now I am in the process of painting it up. I’m doing a little extension to it. Hopefully if all goes well, I will finish by this year end,” he proudly stated.

On the inside he said is a true reflection of a palace and has five spiral stairways to take residents to various compartments on the upper stories.

“Inside I have much more detail work than the outside. In that home carry five steps, and it is all spiral steps. It has a bunch of verandahs.”

And all around the fence and the exterior walls are dotted with neatly carved cement fountains and cemented things such as lions, elephants and mini human statues, in a complimentary botanical environment.

Rihanna named Humanitarian of the Year RIHANNA has been named the 2017 Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year, and will come to campus to accept the Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award at a ceremony next Tuesday (Feb. 28).

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, December 17, 2006 -- Neither the Grimm Brothers of Germany (famous for enchanting the world with their folk tales and fairy stories) nor a dashing prince fetching a pair of golden slippers could have matched the web of magic which singing superstar Rihanna has woven for herself to move from virtual obscurity on the 214 sq km eastern Caribbean island of Barbados to global prominence in less than two years.

Her rise represents the Region’s biggest fairy-type tale for many years; but it defies mythology, for it is all so very real. She is probably now the youngest millionaire ever in Barbados, bequests to youthful heirs in prominent families notwithstanding; and, still only 18, there are many worlds yet for her to conquer.

This past week, Rihanna was sparkling from the peak of another mountain as she joined some of the world’s best known entertainers, including the evergreen Lionel Ritchie, at a prestigious concert during the glittering 2006 Nobel Prize Awards Presentation Ceremony.

Only two other places may for her carry greater gloss – i.e., command performances for the Queen at Buckingham Palace in London and for the President at the White House in Washington.

Just a few days prior to her Oslo, Norway, appearance, Rihanna had trumped the best on the world’s stage in three categories - Female Hot Artist, Pop 100 Artist and Female Artist of the Year - at Billboard’s 2006 Music Awards extravaganza in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Her sold-out appearances have taken the young Barbadian to such ‘far away’ places

as Japan in the Far East and Australia (Down Under), with other trips to London, England, and several major American cities becoming like just a walk in the park.

In her hometown, there have been calls from not insignificant voices for her to be accorded a national honour. Also, increasingly her lovely image is appearing in newspapers and on the local television in endorsement of some advertiser’s products. In short, Rihanna is beginning to appear just about everywhere.

Recently, when I was dining out in Boston with family and friends, our preferred place was the Cheesecake Factory Restaurant which jealously defends its reputation for the most delectable cuisine. Its artistically presented 36-page menu is a delight to behold, and right up front (page 3 to be exact) Rihanna blossoms forth in a beach scene on a large advertisement inviting the world to visit her homeland, with the message saying: “There’s still a real Caribbean out there.

Where you’ll find chart-stopping recording artist and Bajan native Rihanna. Endless perfect beaches, open to all. Incredible dining. Spectacular golf. And people as warm and unspoiled as the island itself.”

Early this year, Rihanna took seven major trophies at the inaugural Barbados Music Awards; and she is being nominated for an armful of others when the second glittering event takes place at Bridgetown on January 5, 2007.

Rihanna also is not far away from one’s inquisitive general reading, though she would hardly have been impressed by the nonsense written in one of the entertainment world’s ‘under press’ which goes by the name of “Star”.

Focusing on one Nick Lachey whom it called America’s Hottest Bachelor and said to have more hot women than one man can han-

dle, the Star wondered whether Rihanna would be “Nick’s next babe” and continued: “Is this the next stop on Nick’s love train? They were on the same bill twice over the weekend of June 23. That Friday they participated in a concert in Sacramento. Then the next night, they did another gig in Seattle. For how long can Rihanna resist Nick’s charms?”

What rot! Rihanna hasn’t just emerged from idiotville or simpletown and is thus fair prey for brainless wolves. She is a product of an environment where stability, good sense and judgment are the norm. Where small size is not an impediment, and scientific and technological advancement is not the barometer, Barbados ranks considerably ahead of many countries, including some of the so-called developed ones, in the conduct, free from evident graft and corruption, of its political, social, judicial and other institutions.

As beautifully as she sings and dances, Rihanna was also firmly on course to academic excellence as a student in the Fifth Form of the Combermere (“Cawmere” to old scholars) Secondary School, just a mile north of the capital Bridgetown.

Indeed, on one of her visits to Barbados in 2006, she did a radio interview and fielded phoned-in questions. Most inquirers wanted to hear of the vistas and the excitement of the faraway places she had recently toured. I wanted to know what was she doing to continue her education while enjoying the glitter and splendor of the United States and the international extension of her singing career. Her reply was that she was seriously continuing her education through private tutoring.

Let the “Star” magazine know that Rihanna is a beauty with brains. Being out of Barbados, she is most unlikely to be the run-of-the-mill entertainment success who hits high and then drops low, gets slogged, ‘stoned’, duped and disappears from the scene. One day they may even see her as a highly qualified former entertainer and Barbados’ Permanent Representative at the United Nations.

The Rihanna high-speed entertainment train will continue unchecked because she has the rich talent and the captivating beauty, and, very importantly, she has the triple-L look that America still likes: She’s Leggy, Light-skinned and Long-haired.

Convicted for resisting cop, loses appeal before Full Court

APPELLANT Bacchus was playing a card game on the Essequibo pavement when he cursed a policeman who had rebuked him.

As the cop Boston was about to arrest him, Bacchus threw himself on the ground and escaped in a yard, shouting: “If you want me you will have to go and bring a warrant.”

Bacchus was subsequently arrested and taken before a magistrate to answer a charge of “Resisting a peace officer acting in the execution of his duty.”

Bacchus, who was convicted by the magistrate, appealed to the Full Court constituted

In delivering the judgment, Chief Justice Luckhoo said: “This is an appeal against the decision of the magistrate of the Essequibo Judicial District who convicted the appellant Bacchus on a charge of resisting a peace officer, acting in the execution of his duty , contrary to s. 28 (b) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Ordinance , Cap. 14 [B.G.]” The evidence disclosed that on June 6, 1960 the respondent John Watson, a police constable was on duty serving summonses at Affiance, Essequibo.

In the course of that duty he was proceeding along the Affiance Public Road when he saw the appellant and the other men playing cards on the parapet of the road.

He went up to them and told them to go away and informed them that he was a policeman in plain clothes.

The appellant used indecent language to the cop. The respondent then attempted to

arrest the defendant for the use of indecent language and the appellant threw himself on the ground and escaped into a yard.

He told the respondent that if he wanted him to go to the station he would have to bring a warrant for him.

The magistrate did not believe the appellant’s denial of the respondent informing him that he was a police constable, It was not doubted that a peace officer is empowered by s. 17 of the Police Ordinance, 1957, No. 89 [B.G.] to arrest without a warrant any person who uses indecent language in his presence and would be acting in the execution of his duty as a peace officer if he arrested such person.

For the appellant it was contended that the respondent did not sufficiently identify himself to the appellant and that knowledge could not be imputed to the appellant that the respondent was a policeman.

Counsel for the appellant submitted that it was therefore not competent for the magistrate to find that the appellant was guilty of resisting a peace officer.

A similar question arose in England on a charge of assaulting police officers in the execution of their duty, contrary to the offences against the Person Act, 1861 [U.K.], s.88. Under that statute it was provided that: “Whosoever shall assault, resist or willfully obstruct any peace officer in the due execution of his duty, or any person acting in aid of such officer shall assault any person with intent to resist or prevent the lawful apprehension or detainer of himself or any other person for any offence, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.”

In that case the evidence disclosed that a police constable in plain clothes had apprehended a boy who was carrying something in a bag which he threw away and then ran away.

The constable on his way to the station with the bag was assaulted by Webb, who called out to parties there to rescue the boy and pitch into the constable. Forbes was among the crowd.

It was submitted on behalf of the prisoners that there was no evidence to go to the jury in support of the count on the assault on the policeman in the execution of his duty because, in consequence of his being in plain clothes, the prisoners did not know that they were constables.

The recorder, Russell Gurney, Q.C. held: That the offence was not of assaulting the police constable knowing him to be in the execution of his duty, but assaulting him being in the execution of his duty. Webb was found guilty and Forbes not guilty.

This ruling was referred to and approved b y the Court of Criminal Appeal in R. v. Maxwell and Clanchy (2).

“We can see no reason why the same process of reasoning should not apply where the charge is one of resisting a peace officer in acting in the execution of his duty.

“The appeal is dismissed with costs to the respondent. The conviction and sentence are affirmed.”

The Guyana Prize for Literature to Be Awarded this Year THE Guyana Prize for Literature, the country’s most important and most prestigious and, until the introduction of the Golden Jubilee Awards for Literature last year and apart from the National Drama Festival which deals exclusively with Playwriting, a prize that recognizes outstanding work in Guyanese literature is set to be awarded to writers in 2017.

As in past years, the Guyana Prize is awarded to writers of Guyanese nationality in several different categories: Best First Book of Poetry, Best First Book of Fiction, Best Book of Poetry, Best Book of Fiction and Best Book of Drama. The Prize also awards Books of Poetry, Fiction and Drama in separate categories for Caribbean writers Al Creighton, of the Guyana Prize (of which Guyanese for Literature Committee writers are also included).

The Guyana Prize will also be facilitating literary festivals (one in March and one in the week of the Guyana Prize Awards Ceremony), as well as workshops later in the year in order to generate more public interest in the work of local writers and to help upcoming writers to be more active and involved with literary things, and also to help improve the quality of the work being put out by local writers.

On the question of whether the Guyana Prize is still relevant, Mr. Creighton answers in the positive saying that “it recognizes and celebrates the best of Guyanese writing… It tells the world what has happened in Guyanese writing.” He also says that it is supposed to encourage local writers and it is meant to give them something to look to. He points to several writers who are now very prominent

and got their initial literary awards from the Guyana Prize, such as Fred D’Aguiar, Paloma Mohamed, etc., perhaps alluding to the fact that the Prize is a good indicator of the young writers who will go on to do much in Guyanese and Caribbean literature.

Creighton also noted the reluctance of local writers to participate in events that the Guyana Prize organizes as one of the hindrances when it comes to bringing some awareness of what is happening in local literature to the general public. He also called for writers to not be disgruntled because they have not won the Prize after being shortlisted, noting that such behavior is not healthy and can be off-putting. He further stated that writers should not be discouraged if they have not been shortlisted, or if they do not win after being shortlisted, and that much thought must go into how to keep those writers interested in the Prize and interested in submitting to the Prize again if they have not been successful the first time around.

The deadline for submitting to the Guyana Prize is March 31st, with the Awards Ceremony is slated for July of this year.

There is no word as yet as to whether the deadline for submission to this year’s Guyana Prize will be extended.

Needing dentures OUR SMILES and oral health can be improved. Unlike Cro-Magnon man, the Etruscans, or George Washington, we have choices, albeit not the choices of our dreams. Missing teeth detract from our appearance, make chewing and speaking difficult, and place stress on our bites. Bridges, dentures, and implants are designed to replace missing teeth for health and cosmetic reasons.

They keep our remaining teeth in their original position, redistribute chewing pressure, and help maintain the natural shape of our faces while supporting our lips and cheeks.

Without them, teeth with open spaces beside them can drift causing our bites to change, our remaining teeth to become loose, and our jawbones to be sore. With drifting, we may have additional decay and possible gum and jawbone problems that necessitate extractions. Missing teeth can cause the mouth to sink and the lips and cheeks to collapse. For these reasons, we want replacement teeth to improve our appearance, maintain the shape of our faces, make chewing easier, and preserve our remaining teeth and a correct bite.

When all of a person’s upper and/or lower teeth have been lost, one of the most affordable treatments available is a full (complete) denture. A total denture is composed of two parts: the teeth and the part that holds the teeth which is base. It (base) may be made of metal (chrome cobalt) or acrylic. The teeth are made of various shades to match the colour of the

existing rest. Acrylic teeth are less breakable than porcelain and are made of the same material as their base. In many cases, only acrylic teeth can be used successfully.

Acrylic dentures can break if you drop them in the bathroom sink or on the floor. They can even break while you’re eating; it’s unlikely, but it can happen. If you can afford one, have an emergency denture made in case of an accidental break or crack.)

There are three basic shapes of teeth: 1. Square for people who have square faces 2. Tapering for people who have triangular shaped faces 3. Ovoid (egg-shaped) for people who have round or oval faces.

If you weren’t happy with your original set of teeth, this is the time to make changes. On average, it takes three appointments over four to five days to make a denture. First, a

preliminary impression of the mouth is taken. Second, a trial fit and/or occlusal check (“bite”) is done and, if necessary, a final impression is taken. Third, the denture is delivered and if necessary, final adjustments (getting a correct bite) is completed.

Follow-up appointments are made available to take care of further adjustments, sore areas, and bite problems you may experience. Follow-up fees for problems may be included in the original price of your denture for the first three months.

If you have irritation or sores in your mouth, if your denture breaks, chips, or cracks, or a tooth is knocked out, call your dentist immediately. Someone without proper training can do more damage than good to your denture. The repairs or adjustments can sometimes be made the same day in the dental office. Only do self repair on an emergency and temporary basis. If you make a mistake, you increase bone loss and irritate the soft tissues of your mouth. If you do irreparable damage, you’ll have the expense of another denture.

Super (or Crazy) glue cannot be used safely. Glue sold over the counter contains harmful chemical and should never be used internally because it releases formaldehyde as a breakdown product. That’s why caution and do not use internally are written on the label.

Several relines can be done before your denture has to be rebased or replaced. Dentures can last years for some people; other people need corrections annually. Relining involves adding another layer of plastic (acrylic gel) to the part of the denture that covers the roof of your mouth.

You may experience a slight burning sensation, which will dissipate slowly. The procedure takes less than an hour, and very little gagging is involved. Relining can be the same as a new denture in that you might have to return for adjustments. The denture may have a bitter, chemical taste and an odor for a while, so keep rinsing.

Other repairs may require one day. Even if your denture does have to be sent to a lab, it will not be days before you get it back. The maximum time you may be without your denture is 24 hours.

THE GUYANA Telephone and Telegraph Co. (GTT) which has a monopoly of the landline telephones are now lobbying with the PUC and the responsible ministry to have landline telephone rates steeply raised to between 40% to 50% in most cases and in some the increase is even steeper as in the case of directory enquiries which are now without charge but which they intend to charge $120 (one hundred and twenty dollars) for each enquiry!

When GTT came here, they came here as a landline company and began harvesting enormous profits from the Guyanese consumers and their relatives and friends who lived abroad, especially in Canada, USA and the UK. The international rates were set higher than what obtained in the rest of the world so that they could subsidize the landline rates. (See page 6 of GTT's Tariff1/14). No accounting was available of how much of this international overcharge was spent on the landline.

The international rates have not fallen but the number of minutes of usage has fallen because GTT did not rouse itself to compete with the newer technologies such as Skype.

Owing to this reduction in the number of minutes, GTT are claiming that they are not making the super profits as before and as such, are not able to cross-subsidize the landline and to honour their Contract.

GTT was slyly trying to have the PUC increase their landline rates and so unwittingly alter their Contract. It may be mentioned that it is this same contract that GTT is claiming the Government of Guyana has breached by passing the Liberalization Act, and hope to claim substantial damages there for. GCA has consistently pointed out that GTT had breached their Contract in a number of substantive instances, one of the main ones being their failure to establish universal landline throughout the coast and operate full landline services in five named interior locations, some of which are in the mining areas. They have also committed a number of other breaches such as their failure to print Telephone Directories on time and for two years not at all. They have voided their contract a long time ago and cannot penalize the Government of Guyana on a void contract.

The Guyana Consumers Association (GCA) feels that GTT should not be allowed to wriggle out of their contractual obligations

to maintain the landline at affordable rates and has stated the following points in several memoranda to the PUC of which GTT have full knowledge:(1) Telephone companies all over the world are facing the identical competition from the new OTT technologies such as Skype.

What such telephone companies have done is to modernize their technology and meet the challenge in an adequate way. They have not attempted to surcharge the consumers for not being able to adopt the advanced technologies in good time. GTT, on the other hand, comfortable in its monopoly ivory tower, never felt the urgency of introducing cutting-edge technologies since they assumed the Guyanese consumer could always be surcharged for their failure to keep up with modern technology. This attempt to increase landline rates is to surcharge the consumer for their failing.

(2) When GTT claims they are not making enough profits, they are referring to the smaller regulated part of their business since the company as a whole remains very profitable. The greater part of their business is now cellular phones and DSL which are very profitable. Indeed, they have been astonishingly lucky to have had these services subsidized by Government who has allowed them spectrum, a valuable national asset worth millions of dollars. The ostensible reason for this allowance of spectrum was for them to establish 4G which is not so far functional in the countryside and many parts of Georgetown. The cellular and DSL are very profitable and could subsidize the landline and ensure that another breach in the contract is not committed.

(3) GCA in its memoranda to the PUC shared with GTT has consistently pointed out that the landline is owed substantial sums which have been withheld by the company and which, when paid, could have subsidized the landline into the indefinite future. Three of these are: (i) The fibre optic and copper wires belonging to the landline are used to transmit cellular and DSL traffic but these pay no rental to the landline. We estimate this rental to be US$2 million per annum to be paid to the landline. (ii) The Undersea Cable costing over US$30 million was transferred to a foreign company without the PUC’s knowledge and permission. A good proportion of this Undersea Cable money is due to the landline. (iii) GTT started as a landline operator and later the

cellular business was grafted on to it.

In establishing the cellular business, GTT used US$60 million generated by the landline. No bank loans were taken; landline money was paid for it. At 15% per annum, the annual interest on US$60 million would be US$9 million and for 10 years it would be US$90 million which should be credited to the landline.

It is clear that GTT could maintain its contract and not try to increase landline

rates since if monies owed to the landline were paid and a subsidy is accorded from the cellular and DSL, the landline would be self-sustaining and affordable to the less privileged. The landline is the poor man's telephone and is used by the old, sick and those who do not have money to pay for cell calls which is ten times more expensive than landline calls. It is anti-social to attempt to increase landline rates in these circumstances.

I am thankful that I am blessed with a job that protects the rights of women and all workers alike. This is not to suggest that the men in my life aren’t equally as important but my passion seem to have been and perhaps will always be, the protection of the rights of women and children.”

O’Dell pointed out that he got into volunteerism as a direct result of an invitation from his aunt and his passion for looking after the rights of others. “I am thankful for the opportunity to help and for those lives I have the privilege to guide.”

He reminded the youths present that they should always remember, they were here for a purpose. “The road of life is filled with twists and turns, ups and downs, and most certainly, some disappointment, but you must be strong and determined and have perseverance and your purpose and dream will become a reality.”

Ron Robinson’s

Who Laff Last

SATIRE has always held an important position in drama, and it is one of the forms of theatre that is very successful in Guyana.

Indeed, while other types of drama fade in and fade out as often as the moon waxes and wanes, comedy, particularly satire, continues to dominate the local theatrical landscape. Of course, a lot of it has to do with our society which, with all its misery is ripe for the potential for comedy. While that sentence might seem like a paradoxical statement, it is actually more ironic than anything else, and there is a kernel of truth within it. One simply needs to take a look at Ron Robinson’s Who Laff Last in order to understand how the real hard times and trials (VAT, for example) faced by the Guyanese people, and the way we deal with all of these things, by turning these very things into moments of laughter, contribute to the creation of comedy that helps us to deal with all of these things.

Who Laff Last can be considered a series of vignettes or skits, short plays with great bursts of humour, that kept the audience at the National Cultural Centre (where the play was

performed from February 24th – 27th) hooked and laughing from the beginning until the end. It starred an ensemble cast, which included Henry Rodney, Mark Luke-Edwards, Michael Ignatius, Sonia Yarde, Nirmala Narine, Sean Thompson, Leslyn Bobbsemple, Nickose Layne, Melika Edmonds, Nelan Benjamin, Nathaya Whaul, Alecia Charles and others, including students of the National School of Theatre Arts and Drama. Only a cursory glance at the preceding list of names is required in order to establish that Who Laff Last managed to attract some of the best performers in the country, and with it being helmed by an acclaimed and experienced director like Ron Robinson (who also acted in several of the skits), there was really nothing stopping the production from becoming the success it turned out to be.

The first skit to open involved a wedding featuring Ron Robinson as a bumbling, intoxicated pastor. It set the tone for the entire evening through its use of “comical plot twists” and Robinson’s infectious performance as the pastor, where with simple gestures and facial expressions he manages to make you laugh.

Apart from the jab at the clergy, there might also have been some slight commentary on the modern Guyanese person and the use of social media and technology, in which even the most salacious of events (including the disruption of the wedding) being used as fodder for the daily [news]feed of the characters playing the audience members at the wedding.

Also impressive is Henry Rodney, particularly in his role as the “Pope” (yes, that same one), who represents the real skill of comedic actors in the way he is able to instill laughter simply by walking on to the stage in character.

It is good to see him in a play again, delivering as well as he always did, sparring and having great chemistry with the bevy of younger actors on the stage.

Perhaps the most memorable skit is the one that dealt with a group of prostitutes who are advocating for the removal of VAT from condoms because the tax, as Nickose Layne’s excellent “Sparklelisha” crudely puts it, will “kill business.” The segment is hilarious not

IX only because of the antics of the cross-dressing prostitutes, but also because of the astute delivery of lines (particularly from Michael Ignatius), the use of puns and emphasis, and the general overall presentation of character – which only goes to show that good comedy is not always merely physical. Kudos must also go out to Sean Thompson for nailing the Travis Chase impersonation in this segment.

There were many other segments, each as funny as the one that preceded it, each important in the way they contributed to the success of the overall show and the way they highlighted the skills of the actors who had to move swiftly from scene to scene, costume to costume, and character to character. Living in these times and being grateful for being granted a reprieve from everyday life by being a part of the audience for the two hours long duration of a show like Who Laff Laugh is enough to make you understand why satire has such a valued and enduring presence in our country.

TOWARDS EARTH HOUR 2017 IN GUYANA Pondering Climate Change with Strong Youth Engagement, Cultural and Educational Activities AS the world look towards the 10th edition of Earth Hour on March 25th 2017,

the WWF Guianas – Guyana Country Office, along with partnering organisations

including the Environmental Protection Agency, will join individuals and businesses across the country and the globe to shine a light on climate action and signal a commitment to changing climate change.

The main goal of Earth Hour 2017 is to “Shine a Light on Climate Action” and through the voices, messages, symbolic actions and pledges of all the people involved, increase the awareness, understanding and knowledge of all Guyanese about the key topic of Climate Change.

Now in its 4th year, Earth Hour in Guyana will focus on three (3) themes relevant to our country: Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Conservation and Biodiversity.

The occasion will see a number of activities planned and executed by partnering organisations.

The official launch of the three-week climate awareness through cultural and educational activities occurred on March 3rd 2017 - World Wildlife Day - in Georgetown.

The launch featured the screening preview of the official Earth Hour in Guyana video and the presentation of the broader set of Earth Hour activities done by Ms Aiesha Williams - Guyana Country Manager of WWF Guianas.

The launch also offered a good occasion to debate on the three themes of Earth Hour in Guyana 2017; this occurred through an interesting and interactive panel discussion moderated by Dr Patrick Chensey and in-

volving some key institutions - WWF, Conservation International Guyana, Iwokrama, UNDP, CYEN, CUSO International - and a number of young environment experts, specialists, students, supporters.

The active involvement of the youth is in fact - one of the key points of Earth Hour in Guyana 2017: the idea being to address the issues linked to Climate Change in a fresh, practical and yet truly consistent way.

Everyone is invited to learn more and be part of the #ChangeClimateChange movement lead by WWF. The 2017 edition of Earth Hour in Guyana will prove how easy it is for everyone to take action and do their part. From adopting one of the simple life hacks featured in the official Earth Hour in Guyana video, to turning off non-essential light for 1 hour on Saturday March 25th from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

Hopefully though, people will take action prior to and beyond the hour and become involved in Earth Hour campaigns and activities. Perhaps even starting a movement in their own community.

Schizophrenia Hello Everyone, I hope this week has treated you well.

Last week I wrote on Bi-Polar disorder and received a great deal of feedback. It seems there are more people dealing with it than I thought. This is unfortunate as it means most of those people are not seeking the help required. I decided to write on schizophrenia this week as more of these cases are seen at GPHC weekly. My hope is to again reach out to those who may be suffering or watching their loved ones suffer from this disorder.

Schizophrenia is a type of mental illness that overall affects an individual’s thought processes, feelings and behaviour.

People with this disorder will seem as though they have (more often than not) lost touch with reality. My research shows that in 2013, there were 23.6 million people suffering from schizophrenia world -wide. It affects more males than females who typically start to show signs by age 15-16.

Unfortunately, life expectancy of those with this disorder is about 10-20 years less than those without it due to its association with low energy, poor diet, obesity, increased risk of substance abuse and suicidal behaviours.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA? There are three types of schizophrenia symptoms which are positive, negative and cognitive.

The positive symptoms comprises of psychosis such as hallucinations, delusions and unusual behaviour processes. There is a difference between hallucinations and delusions. Hallucinations occur when the individual sees or hears things that are not there- that are not caused by any type of stimulus. Delusions are similar but are caused by a stimulus. For example, if the individual sees someone behind them, they will assume they are being followed/stalked etc.

Negative symptoms are associated with disturbances in behaviour and emotions such as mood changes which may seem like depression. They will lose interest in previously

enjoyed activities, isolate themselves and seem more anxious/irritated than usual.

The cognitive symptoms include problems with brain function such as memory loss, concentration/attention and even basic understanding. The individuals rarely ever, in this case, know that they have a mental disorder.

The positive, negative and cognitive symptoms are the main signs of schizophrenia but there are other, faster and earlier tell-tale signs that one can look out for. Someone who is developing the disorder will start to show abnormal social behaviour. They will fail to

realise or accept reality in many situations due to false beliefs and confused thinking.

There will be a sudden lack in motivation and energy which results in loss of productivity and efficiency at work, school or in homecare. Schizophrenia is also highly correlated with irritable bowel syndrome and the onset of heavy tobacco smoking.

With any mental illness, especially schizophrenia, individuals are at a high risk of being victims to violence and abuse. During periods of psychosis, they are also more likely to be the perpetrators of violence than the

has problems during birth, especially viruses.

They may have had personal trauma such as physical or sexual abuse, which could be the trigger for development.

WHAT CAN CAUSE SCHIZOPHRENIA? The risk factors for schizophrenia are much like any other mental illness. One is much more likely to develop the disorder based on their brain structure, genes, family and personal history. This means the individual may have a chemical imbalance involving certain neurotransmitters in the brain or may have a family member with the disorder. It is not caused by any particular gene but is more likely to develop when a child is premature or

HOW DO WE TREAT SCHIZOPHRENIA? Like most mental illnesses, schizophrenia cannot be cured, but treated in the sense where the individual could lead a normal and productive life. Treatment needs to include prescription medication and psychotherapy.

This means, the individual must go to their

nearest health centre if they are exhibiting possible signs and symptoms.

Hospitalization is required in severe cases to ensure adherence to medication, which is usually an issue with schizophrenia patients.

While people with schizophrenia do tend to overuse drugs, the use of drugs can also bring on schizophrenia. This is particularly the case with marijuana. Heavy marijuana use over time has been known to bring out schizophrenia in individuals with a family history of the disorder. This long term use will also eventually cause psychosis.

In cases such as these, family involvement is crucial. There needs to be constant encouragement to remain in treatment. While parenting style is not a casual factor, patients do better with a positive family support system.

Treatment should be a priority as untreated and severe cases may result in unemployment, poverty, lack of independence, substance abuse, homelessness and suicidal thoughts/behaviours. There is a higher than average suicide rate associated with schizophrenia.

My research shows that 20-40% of schizophrenic patients attempt suicide at least once.

The individuals may be reluctant to seek help, again because they may not know/think anything is wrong. This is where you- family and friends come on. Encourage them to get help. Listen and understand, rather than judge.

#SupportCreativity IT was through a chance encounter last September at a Night Cap event that I was first introduced to the work of Godlyn.

I knew in that moment I needed to have a conversation with her about some of the overarching themes prominent in the compelling works she made. Although I took her contact information the same night, it wasn’t until recently that I finally managed to make that long overdue conversation happen. During our sit down we spent about an hour and a half discussing everything from her decision to resettle in Guyana after living in Florida and New York for a few years, to the importance of representation, particularly for Black women and even her thoughts on Amber Rose’s Slut Walk.

“For me art is more than just an expression, it’s a way of being. It’s something I’ve done all my life. I didn’t take it too seriously until I left Guyana and started living in Florida first. I’m not a friend-making person so art was my [solace] and a way of clearing my mind. When I moved to New York five years ago I started seeing that other people made art a career. There was a bit of pressure on me because they had their own style and I wanted to do something different. For those couple of years I would spaz because I didn’t have a signature look for my paintings. So I stopped for a while because I didn’t think I was getting anywhere with it.”

Godlyn went on to describe how she later resumed her creative practice saying, “I started doing more fashion for my high school.

After my third fashion show the principal asked me about teaching an art class for the incoming freshman and that’s how I got back into it again. It was a performing arts school and I was the only person invested in the visual arts so he suggested I teach the class for ex-

the way I wanted to be expressed. I would paint myself in places I wanted to be, for example, in nature, free from stress, worry, criticism and judgment.”

At a time when most persons are actively looking to leave these shores in search of

tra credit. After that I tried to find something I could relate to in the paintings. So I thought I would take a different approach instead of just trying to create a different style.”

The approach she is referring to is her decision to make the central theme of her works a more personal narrative that could be equally identifiable as hers as well as that of countless other women around the world.

“Most of the art books that taught you certain techniques only featured Caucasian people. I wanted them to teach me how to paint someone who looked like me. So I started with that. My work is an ode to girls that look like me because I wanted to see someone who looked like me. Representation does matter.

People that have come across my artwork would ask, ‘Is that you?’ When I actually took some time to sit and think about it I realized that subconsciously I was painting myself in

persistence is a great trait for business. I’ve always had a sense of determination because I want to make a difference with my work. If you don’t push to get your work noticed then no one is going to look at you. There’s always a sense of being replaceable because someone else can do what you do. That’s what drives a lot of artists to find their niche. One of the main reasons I left is because of the chaos.

I’ve been able to think much clearer now and I can produce work at a level that I’m proud of.”

Another person perhaps even more proud of her accomplishments is none other than Godlyn’s own mother, who was also creatively inclined in years past. It was difficult not to notice the intricately designed and constructed tibisiri fiber art hangings or the floral arrangements and crocheted pieces strategically placed around her home, all of which I wrongfully attributed to Godlyn. In fact, she joined our conversation briefly, speaking with pride about her own start along the self-directed creative path and her daughter’s subsequent decision to venture even further down the same path.

“She did the only thing I didn’t do [art].

I [didn’t follow it up] because I saw that it wasn’t going anywhere.” Speaking on the fiber art pieces she said, “I learned to do those on my own. I didn’t go anywhere to learn how to do them. Years ago I went to a youth club and the lady said she couldn’t teach me because I was left-handed. So I would watch them then come home and try it myself, the same way she [Godlyn] learned to do certain things on her own.”

Elaborating further on the concept of her works Godlyn says, “My art being nude is about freedom, understanding and being proud of your womanhood. It’s not about sex.

It’s about being proud of yourself as a woman and being proud of your body, knowing that you deserve respect whether you’re naked or not. That got me some attention from rape victims and persons who were molested.

I’ve also had some girls tell me that they’re scared to look at themselves in the mirror

when they’re naked because they feel dirty or because they feel it’s unnatural.

I feel like there aren’t enough reminders for women to be proud of their womanhood.

There aren’t a lot of things that are exclusive to women that can create a sisterhood for support. I don’t think we have that space here but I would love to be an advocate for something like that.”

Naturally, I was curious to pick her brain

about Amber Rose’s Slut Walk, a not-so-new tradition that gained attention through the socialite’s own celebrity pull factor.

“I like the idea. I’m completely cool with women walking naked if they want to and taking back the word “slut” and “whore.”

But I also feel like she’s exploiting it. Initially it was a walk for rape victims but now it just looks like a parade. I respect how it’s

transitioning but I think it lost the essence of what it was in the beginning. There are still people who don’t look at feminine body parts as feminine body parts. They don’t look at them and respect them as part of a being, a beautiful part of a being. I think there’s a [better] way to get people to take women more seriously than they’re taking her right now. But I still appreciate that she’s putting [the message] out there.”

IT is no secret that Guyana still has much to do when it comes to the dismantling of patriarchy, as well as upholding the tenets of Women’s Rights, and Human Rights in general. However, as with almost all solid and successful revolutions, the initiative must begin with the people and not necessarily with the government, although the government’s role can be crucial to achieving great change. That being said, the people of Guyana must surely be aware that patriarchy still reigns despite us being in the 21st Century and all. I mean, women are still facing domestic violence; many women and girls are raped; and catcalling has become an epidemic that is promoted by teenagers as much as they are by the stereotypical creepy old men on our street corners.

SAHRV has organized “A March for Girls” in solidarity with similar regional marches. Guyana will be joining various other countries in the Caribbean, such as Jamaica and Barbados, on March 11th.

Meant to advocate for comprehensive sexual education in schools, bring awareness to various areas of reproductive health care, as well as bringing awareness of LGBT rights and the call to legalize sex work, as well as existing as a resistance to all forms domestic violence. The March will begin at 3 PM at the Stabroek Market Square. “A March for Girls” comes from a movement known as the #LifeInLeggings movement which was started by Ronelle King. #LifeInLeggings has had quite the impact within the region, with many women (and men) in various countries becoming involved with it in various ways including, as SAHRV has, through marches like “A March for Girls.”

To the persons who are saying at this very moment, “What is #LifeInLeggings?”, I say to you that if you are young, with enough

time and internet access to allow yourselves to know the “Cash Me Ousside” Girl, but have somehow remained blind to #LifeInLeggings, I urge you to slap away the hands of the man covering your eyes and quickly mobilize yourself and your peers so you can learn about, and contribute to, activities, groups and movements in the Caribbean that are striving to make the region a better place for girls and women. Better yet, join the march and contribute to all the aims of SAHRV and the #LifeInLeggings movement which, as pointed out by one of the founders of SAHRV, Akola Thompson are numerous but are also “interconnected issues” that come together to contribute to the problems we face here.

Thompson also goes on to say that she hopes the march helps to bring the messages of her group and of the march itself to the people rather than having the people come to them.

She likens SAHRV’s method as being similar to “Groundings” where they go out into the communities and speak to the people directly, rather than talking to them through another medium, such as television, which is kind of removed and lacks the personal interaction between those engaged in the conversation.

“A March for Girls” will host several speakers, including survivors of rape who will bravely tell their stories, an individual who will using karate as a way of teaching girls and women how to defend themselves, as well as Nadia Sagar, lawyer and activist, and Twinkle Bissoon, trans rights activist.

The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA), the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), Guyanese Girls Rock and Child Link are all various organizations that have come on board as partners to support the march, which is expected to move from Stabroek Market all the way down Brickdam to the Square of the Revolution. It might seem like a bit of a long walk, but whoever said the path to ending patriarchy was going to be a short, easy romp?

Now let me state very early in this feature, that I am not in any way suggesting that there are not bad fathers - in fact, there are just too many very bad fathers. What this feature is all about, is that there is this idea by some misguided souls that Father's Day is the day to go on the attack on all men.

There are 52 Sundays in each year, and just one Sunday set aside to honour and celebrate the good fathers and so it is a shame that Father's Day is the day when all this venom is unleashed.

There are 51 Sundays in each year when the bad fathers can be vilified.

My campaign is to save Father's Day, if you will, from being so misrepresented; even by some well-educated and otherwise good people.

Pests affecting coconut palms THIS week the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) will commence a series on major arthropod pests affecting coconut production in the Caribbean Region. Many of these pests are not present in Guyana but NAREI continues to conduct surveillance.

RHINOCEROS BEETLE (ORYCTES RHINOCEROS): This nocturnal pest is prevalent in newly-cleared lands where its food source was destroyed and replaced by coconut seedlings.

The population seems to be higher in the rainy season.

Identification of the pest: The adult beetle is stout, brownish black or black and has a long horn which projects dorsally from the head in males. The female has a shorter horn and lays 140 – 150 eggs of which 53 are oval, creamy white and found in manure pits or decaying vegetable matter at a depth of 5 15 cm. The eggs hatch into grubs, which are stout, sluggish, white “C”- shaped with pale brown heads. The grubs are found at a depth of 5 - 30 cm in the soil and pupate in earthen cells at a depth of 0.3 - 1 m.

SYMPTOMS OF DAMAGE: The adult beetle bores into unopened fronds, spathes and leaf midribs. The attacked fronds when fully open show characteristic triangular cuts. The beetles also bore into the crown to feed, thereby destroying the meristem and causing plant death. The central spindle appears cut or toppled and there are holes with chewed fibres sticking out.

MANAGEMENT: Cultural control: Clean cultivation is practiced by removal and burning of dead plant parts or whole dead plants since larvae shelter in rotting wood; the various life stages of the beetle must be collected and destroyed from its breeding ground, for example, in cow dung; and all dead coconut palms on the farm (which are likely to serve as breeding sites) must be removed and burnt to maintain good sanitation.

Mechanical control: During peak period of population build up, the adult beetle may be extracted from the palm crown using GI metal hooks.

Chemical control: Aggregation pheromone traps should be installed in the periphery of the plantation at a height of 0.6 - 1

m to lure, capture and kill the beetles; as a prophylactic measure, 10.5 g Naphthalene balls (approx. three to four balls) are applied to the topmost three leaf axils, then covered with fine sand. This should be repeated once every 45 days; and manure pits and other possible breeding sites should be treated with 0.01% Carbaryl (50% WP) on a wet weight basis; this treatment should be repeated every

3 months.

Biological control: The Oryctes virus used as an inoculum at a rate of 6 beetles per acre can reduce the leaf and crown damage caused by the beetles; and castor cake should be soaked (1 kg in 5 litres of water) in small mud pots and kept in coconut cultivations to attract the adults, which are then killed.

‘Curly & Boujee’ set for Umana Yana THE burgeoning natural-hair community in Guyana has brought with it an increasing demand for products and services that can cater to curly hair textures.

But with the majority of salons and distributors still specialising in processed and straighter hair types, local ‘naturalistas’ are left with little to no resources to tend to their natural hair.

On March 17, the natural-hair community will be treated to a weekend of educational activities aimed at providing resources, products and tutorials for the care, styling and maintenance of natural hair.

This event will take the form of “Curly & Boujee”, which will be hosted by Curlfest Guyana and feature the services of 27-yearold hairstylist, Vincent Lauretta from the United States.

Known by his thousands of social media followers as “Vincenzo Stylist” and “The Curl King”, Vincent is certified in treatment, cutting and styling curly hair, and has dedicated his career to promoting healthy natural hair.

Curlfest Guyana coordinator, Tamika Henry told The Buzz that coming off of the success of last October’s event, she and business partner, Denisha Victor decided to continue the trend in order to provide Guyanese ‘naturalistas’ with much-needed resources on how to treat their natural hair.

“One of the things we learned from Curlfest is that people are genuinely uncomfortable with their natural hair, and still struggle with how to style it, because they haven’t embraced it,” she said.

“Leading up to this year’s Curlfest, we wanted to do educational programmes so that more people would be prepared.”

Following social media posts that showcased the success of Curlfest Guyana last year, Tamika said that she was quite surprised when Vincent reached out to her to offer his services.

She then decided to jump on the opportunity to have him come to Guyana to conduct educational workshops in natural- hair care and styling for businesses and individuals.

And so the idea for Curly & Boujee was birthed. The weekend of activities will open on Friday, March 17 at the Umana Yana from

19:00hrs with an interactive, mini-expo which will feature a fashion show, mini hair show and cultural performances.

The fashion show will feature designs from Novel Tees and 592 Tees, Olympia Small-Sonaram, and House of Pearson.

Vincenzo will also be styling the hair of three selected models, while the process is being streamed live on social media.

The mini-expo will feature products from Koko, Curl Box, Gifted Beauty Bundles, FDAP Ntauralistas, CIM Exotic Designs, Cake Face by Dahlia and others.

But Tamika said that tickets for the event

must be purchased in advance, as the venue can only hold a limited number of guests. Tickets for the event cost $2,000, and are available at Koko, on Robb Street, and FDAP Nauralistas at Fogarty’s.

Curlfest Guyana has also teamed up with Kavita’s Signature Cuts & Spa, located at the City Mall, where interested persons can book appointments to have their hair treated and styled by Vincenzo on Saturday, March 18 and Monday, March 20.

On Sunday, March 19, Vincenzo will offer a Master Class for businesses and individuals who want to learn to cut, colour and care for natural hair.

The event will be a full day filled with hair education and tutorials, and will feature products from the renowned line, Wella Professionals, which is also sponsoring the event.

Tamika says that she looks forward to the event, as it promises to be a one-of-a-kind event that will change the course of the natural-hair community in Guyana.

INDENTURED LABOURER Hamid’s parents arrived here in 1873 as indentured labourers assigned to Demerara. There the young hand took a job on the sugar estate at age nine to take care of his sick mother on a sugar plantation on the island of Leguan. His mother died and his father moved to the Uitvlugt estate.

There was no compulsory schooling in those days and the estate owners were glad for all the labour they could muster.

WALKING MULES He was the Mule boy –leading mules that pulled punts loaded with sugar cane. It was strenuous and demanding work. But he was a tall and strong lad, very hyper-active.

BLESSED WITH COMMON SENSE He was very responsible and astute. What he lacked in formal education he made up with acute common sense. He was of strong character,

Islamic and versed in Arabic.

LEADERSHIP TRAITS A dedicated worker, the management saw his attributes and loyalty and elevated him to the gang of forkmen. There he was recognized as a leader and promoted to junior driver when he was only 20 years .He moved from gang to gang, ending up in the cane-cutting group. There he excelled as a supervisor, despite great opposition from the workers. Most hated him for his deep belief in Islam and his progress as a no- nonsense head. He became a bridge between the peasants and management.

And he tried hard to champion the workers’ welfare while serving his masters who cared more for profit than people. It was a thin line to walk on. But with God in his soul he managed and later he was appointed head driver in charge of all gangs - a very taxing job. This called for education as accounts was involved.

They had penetrated his food. Right away he got scared. He believed his food was poisoned. The lab test revealed rat poison. Had he not noticed those dead ants or sent for his food he could have eaten it and died.

He was the first East Indian to serve on the management team. The lowly labourers nicknamed him ‘coolie bakra’ – a ‘white coolie’ with no formal education. But he made it up the social/economic ladder where the white man ruled.

An explosion of colour and creativity – as North Georgetown Secondary hosts lively Culture Day

Story and photos by Tamica Garnett IT WAS an explosion of culture, colours, food and creativity at the North Georgetown Secondary School culture day last week, where students and teachers learnt to appreciate all the different ethnic cultures that make Guyana the cultural medley that we are.

Culture from all six of Guyana’s ethnic groups were well accounted for, and then some. Many of the children and teachers took the opportunity to not only celebrate their own culture, but to show appreciation and togetherness by dabbling in cross-culture happenings.

Quite a few Indo-Guyanese chose to don dashikis and African print outfits, while several Afro-Guyanese enjoyed being decked out in saris, shalwars, and kurtas.

There were also numerous Chinese kimonos being worn by pretty much every race present.

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE THE ENTIRE length of Poverty Dam knew about the “High Bridge Jumbie.” Rumour has it that some nights after midnight a beautiful woman could be seen walking back and forth on the bridge. She is always crying loudly. There is also a story circulating about an even weirder phenomenon.

On more than one occasion a coffin could be seen slowly crossing the bridge. Only a fool would attempt to engage either entity.

There were no such fools in Poverty, with the exception of Oliver.

Oliver was daring. He was afraid of nothing except his wife Rita. She was the only person that truly terrified him. He took a regular busing and numerous thumps from his angry spouse. All of their marital problems rotated around one thing only; Rum. All of Oliver’s energy was directed to enjoyment of self. There was only one thing that he enjoyed and that was liquor; rum in particular. Most week-day and every weekend he spent imbibing at one of the rum shops in the village. Poverty Dam was a small fishing village and all of the sea fearers indulged in this past-time. That automatically qualified them as friends, of Oliver. This means that he was never short of drinking buddies. It also meant that he spent a lot of money on rum. This resulted in less and less money for the home. His wife Rita was unemployed so things got tougher and tougher for the family of five. Rita often took her frustration out on Oliver.

When the rumours of strange happenings started swirling about, Oliver refused to believe them. He swore to cross the bridge anytime he wanted. And cross it he did.

One dark, moonless night Oliver was slowly making his way home. There was no other way for him but across the bridge. He was so drunk that speed was unthinkable.

Staggering in a crooked zig-zag pattern he headed for the bridge and home.

As he approached the bridge he noticed that something was blocking his way. When he got close enough to see clearly he recognized it to be a coffin. The six foot long casket was effectively barring his passage.

Immediately the rumours came to mind.

Digging deep into his bravery reserves, he steadied himself and made a valiant but unwise charge for the bridge. He was never seen or heard from again.

Eventually the story of the crying woman reached the ears of villagers. Apparently, she was a young East Indian woman who was married to another young East Indian man living in the village many decades ago. Their marriage was a quiet hurried affair – as many arranged marriages are.

The woman Sabitree and husband Ramesh, were both married at a very early age; fifteen and seventeen respectively. The first time they met each other was one week before the marriage. As can be expected from such an arrangement, there was plenty of ways for things to go wrong, and wrong it did go.

Ramesh was always opposed to the union

but his elderly parents insisted. If he hoped to inherit the family’s riches he would comply.

He did so reluctantly. Sabitree in the meanwhile had little choice in the matter. She was a docile, quiet, almost fragile girl. Obedience was the only way she knew. She did as she was expected to do. The marriage lasted the better part of six months.

Just out of high school, Ramesh met many new friends including girls. They fascinated him and slowly he became intoxicated by beauty. The young husband began cheating

on his wife. He felt no guilt or remorse. He was too busy enjoying himself. Soon he began sleeping out and making public appearances with his other woman. This news got back to his parents and wife. When he was confronted he was defiant and unapologetic. He was immediately ejected from the home and the marriage was over.

Sabitree took this very badly. She fell into a deep depression. Nothing her parents or (former) in-laws did made things any better for her. One evening she went for a stroll

and never returned. The distraught young woman had plunged to her death over the High Bridge. Thereafter, at nights, the beautiful jumbie would appear, walking on the bridge. Her long beautiful, black hair would be covering her face so that no one was able to recognize her. She was a stunning yet terrifying sight.

One faithful night Ramesh was returning home from visiting one of his many women.

He had heard the rumour but paid scant attention to them, he was too engrossed in his world of sensuality. Unknown to him tonight he would meet another mysterious beauty.

Ramesh hesitated briefly as he approached the bridge. It was past 12 and his mind was filled with images and sensation of the past two hours. It was not until he started up the sharp incline that he realized somebody else was there. As she came into full view the young Casanova stopped in pleasant surprise.

She was a gorgeous creature. Even though her long hair completely obscured her features, he sensed that she was special. After all, he had plenty of practice in this field. Smiling he approached the woman. Then he noticed something else. She was sobbing softly, her head hung low in sadness.

The young man moved smoothly to her side, his confidence oozing from every pore in his body. He was handsome and outgoing, and this had reaped numerous success stories.

“Hi sweetheart. Why are you crying?”

There was no response from the dejected figure. Ramesh gently put his hand under her chin and tilted her head upwards. With his free hand he deftly brushed aside the hair so that he could see the face. He would regret this move. When the hair was removed, he found himself gazing into the face of his dead wife. Horror, shock, terror and complete disorientation hit him, all at the same time. He just stood there, aghast, staring transfixed into the face of death.

“Ramesh!”

“Oui Bai!” “Yo! Ramesh what’s up?”

Two of his friends had just arrived on their cycles. What they saw give them cause to worry. Their buddy was standing on the bridge as if in a trance. No matter how hard they shouted he seemed unable to respond to them.

Ramesh gazed at the woman he had spurned. If only he had taken time to see her true beauty. She was better looking than any of his flings. She took his hand and led him towards their destiny. He was powerless to resist and complied knowing what was about to occur. He felt a sense of relief and regret for his past actions. The couple walked to the edge of the bridge and over it.

Two dumbfounded youths watched with horror as their friend took the deathdive. As he was going over they at last saw what he was seeing; Sabitree. They needed no further motivation for emergency flight.

The morning half of the day saw the students being given the chance to walk around various booths set up on the school’s front lawns, including the food stands which pretty much had it all.

Setting the mood was sweet pan music, and the thrum of the African drums.

In the afternoon, the students were treated to a show in song and dance that reflected several cultural aspects.

HISTORY IN BRIEF Acting Headmistress, Michele Jordan sat down with The Buzz and gave us a brief history of the event.

This is the ninth year that annual event is being held; it is usually always celebrated on the day before Mashramani.

“It was the brainchild of Ms. Natasha Paul; she’s a member of staff, and a former student of the North Georgetown Secondary,” Ms Jordan said, adding: “We became aware that many of our students don’t know about the culture of each ethnic group, so you find students would come and they would say, ‘Miss, what is ‘jalaybee’?’ So, this brings an awareness of and appreciation for each other’s cultures.”

Watching the children walking about, laughing, connecting and checking out the different booths, you could be sure that the initiative was achieving its aim.

To ensure everyone is involved, each grade level is tasked with preparing foods for a particular ethnic groups.

The initiative is also hits two birds with one stone, as it also dubs as a fundraising activity. The food brought by the students is sold, quite cheaply one may add, and the proceeds go to a project at the school. This year the school hopes to use the earnings to upgrade the compound.

“The proceeds of this year’s culture day will go towards building up the school’s compound. We need to have our inter-house sports, field events, held right here in compound, rather than having to leave to go to another ground. And over the past weeks we noticed that there would be puddles of water where the ground is uneven so we’re hoping to build up all of that,” Jordan explained.

Jordan got full support from her staff, including the Deputy, Dawn Monplaisir. Some of teachers seemed even more excited than the students to be a part of the day.

But in these sensitive family affairs, compromise can be reached. Discuss their choice, meet the guy. Perhaps the chemistry will kick in. Parents do have the maturity to know a good person. They check his family background, his way of life, health, education and morality. They want the best for you.

Teens today assert their rights to choose but it is not always a compatible person.

Most times the eyes make the choice in the

other person’s personality. But that is not all for a life partnership. Looks can deceive and it’s the inner person that counts. A relationship must be founded on strong moral values.

Too often the choice is shallow. Dissatisfaction follows and the marriage goes on ‘the rocks’ because there is more lust than love.

Animal lover and the High Court dogs

The dogs residing in the compound of the High Court in Georgetown are Lulu, who is about 13 years old and Pumpkin, a three-legged animal around 12 years old.

According to Manbodh, she first encountered the dogs in 2007 at the High Court and it took her one year to gain the trust of Pumpkin, whose right paw was chopped.

The kind-hearted woman says, “You don’t have to put down your animals. With the proper care and treatment they can have healthy lives.” She is of the opinion that the stray population needs to be controlled by spaying and neutering all pets.

Manbodh spoke out against neglect and ill-treatment of animals whose owners have failed to care for them and often many of the sick

Manbodh, who has a full time job running a B&B also spends most of her free time rescuing animals, taking animals to spay, answering questions pertaining to animal welfare via Facebook, emails and phone calls, helping animals owners who have fallen on hard times with food and medication for their pets. Manbodh says she likes nothing better than helping all animals.

She also rescues sloths, monkeys and other animals and recently she rescued eight parrots and one macaw from a wildlife trader. However the macaw died.

The parrots are being housed at the zoo and once their wings have healed they will be released back into their natural habitat.

Manbodh strongly believes that wildlife should not be caged but left to roam free.

It all started when Start-up Grind, the largest independent start-up community actively educating, inspiring and connecting 1,000,000 entrepreneurs in over 200 cities, appointed Hilary Benjamin-Byer as its Guyanese Director in February 2017 after a rigorous process.

The international organization nurtures start-up ecosystems in 98 countries through events, media and partnerships with organizations like Google for Entrepreneurs.

In an effort to strengthen its networks across borders and simultaneously provide assistance to budding entrepreneurs, monthly events featuring successful local founders, innovators, educators and investors who share lessons learned on the road to building great companies, are held.

“These stimulating events which are required by Startup Grind will allow us to create a start-up community right here in Guyana. A community in which potential and young entrepreneurs could be nurtured, a community that will allow for entrepreneurs to network and a community that will attract investors to invest in start-up businesses not only in ICT, but in all fields,” he said.

Quoting Abraham Lincoln, the 23-year-old University of Guyana graduate said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” As such he will be making his dream a reality when the first of many Start-up Grind fireside chats is held here in Guyana. It will allow local entrepreneurs to network while building on each other’s experience.

“During these stimulating sessions, entrepreneurs and even potential entrepreneurs will share their experiences, talking not only about their successes but their failures as well. You see many people don’t like to speak about failures, but when we fail we have an opportunity to internalize, analyze and come up with life- changing solutions,” Benjamin-Byer posited.

But to achieve his dream, the 23-year-old cannot do it alone. As such, he has managed to secure the support of budding entrepreneurs like himself with a similar passion for ICT. Rosanna Ferreira and Yogvika Arjune, both of whom are ICT Engineers (Ast.) are now part of Start-up Grind, Georgetown in addition to Nevin Johnson, a Programmer Analyst.

“Start-up Grind is one of the largest globally Independent start-up communities and supported by Google for entrepreneurs, so naturally being a part of the Startup Grind Georgetown team is a great privilege,” Ferreira said in an exclusive interview with Guyana Chronicle.

As the Research & Assistant Co-coordinator, the 25-year-old is ever so often gathering and disseminating materials to help empower entrepreneurs.

“As the key research person of the team and a Start-up Grind ambassador I am constantly looking for Start-up Grind materials to help empower my team members as

fellow ambassadors and to help create awareness among other fellow entrepreneurs in my community,” she posited.

Since becoming a member of Start-up Grind Georgetown, Ferreira successfully opened her own business.

“When I first joined the team at Start-up Grind Georgetown, I did not even understand the term entrepreneur. I am now the proud owner of business startup Cupcakes and Unique Delights. I am constantly looking at tips on becoming a better business owner, enjoying the compliments for my work and even encouraging others to become entrepreneurs like myself.”

Johnson shared similar sentiments, noting that through Start-up Grind Georgetown, he will be able to make a difference.

“I love making a difference and being positive, whether in the life of others or by what I do professionally. My ultimate goal is to lead from the middle, influencing those who are above, below and adjacent,” he said.

As the Team Coordinator, he oversees the processes and details how the chapter will achieve its goals and objectives.

Start-up Grind will engage the Founder of Version75 and Co-founder of WeOwn Space, Eldon Marks in an interview before a live audience on Wednesday March 22, 2017. Version75 is the winner of Guyana’s first Hacakathon.

“Marks, a social entrepreneur, software developer, educator and dreamer, is no stranger to Guyana. For 12 years, he lectured and mentored students at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Guyana,” she said.

It was explained that during the ground breaking event, Marks, who holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Howard University, will chronicle his life’s experiences as an entrepreneur. Additionally, Marks is expected to talk about how ICT is changing the way people do business.

The event will also create an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to network. As such, the event is expected to attract more than 40 budding entrepreneurs and investors from across the country.

It will be held at WeOwn Space conference Centre in South Ruimveldt from 18:30hrs. The entry fee is GY$1,500 and tickets can be bought on the night of the event or online via www.startupgrind.com/georgetown.

– Young pianist with the right ‘keys’

EVERYONE has some special talent, but for 17 year old Shane Christian Shewjattan, or Shaneiken as he is sometimes fondly called, music is more than just some special talent- it is his favorite pastime, his love and a lifestyle.

The genesis of this young man’s piano skills dates back to when he just a little six year old listening to his older brother practice the instrument after returning home from music lessons. Incredibly, Shane developed a skill whereby he could just listen to the songs his brother played and replay on the piano without being told what keys he needed to play and in what order.

“When he [Shane’s older brother] was done practicing, I would start playing his pieces by ear sound, which amazed my parents who then pushed me to develop this gift,” the young Shewjattan recounted.

This skill of playing by ear is something he takes much pride in, since it relates to him basically knowing all the sounds of each key of the piano. “This is something that shocked a lot of people who found this very difficult to do, even those who were playing for many years, but it just came naturally to me,” the young pianist said.

Aiming to hone his skills, his parents encouraged him to start formal music lessons. These lessons gave him confidence and developed his preexisting skills. “Without Miss Henry [his piano instructor], I don’t know where I would be right now as it relates to music,” he said.

Thereafter, he was able to write practical and theoretical examinations (grades one to four) with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) examinations, (internationally recognized, British music examinations) and obtained distinction and merit passes in these.

However, he was confronted with another set of impeding examinations- the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and now the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) so his musical endeavors in this regard are paused.

Along the way he has also learnt to play the guitar which similarly to the piano happens to be an outlet of relaxation, but perhaps playing the piano was his greater

calling.

Although he enjoys playing all types of music from RnB to pop, he accounted, “One of my favorite things to do is recreating reggae and soca songs on the piano.” The uniqueness of this is that he uses his talent of playing by ear; so he listens to these songs and basically recreates the melody on the piano, playing all the right keys in tune with the music.

BE BOLD FOR CHANGE WE ARE IN THE month of March and this is the month women's achievements in various disciplines are celebrated all over the world. The United Nation’s theme is BE BOLD FOR CHANGE.( I LOVE IT).

We had our first meeting for Women in Business Expo 2017 a few days ago and very fond memories came flooding back to the genesis of it all through two NGOs Sonia Noel Foundation was launch in 2012.

The mission of SNFCA is to create access for talented individuals, not only in Guyana, its home base, but through the wider Caribbean. It is hoped that through this medium an avenue for the development of the creative industries, so relevant to current socio-economic life changes could be fostered.

The Women’s Association for Sustainable Development is a social group to empower women.

Some of the objectives of WASD are: providing a forum for business and professional women to relax; renewing and rejuvenating while providing support and mentorship to youth and to each other; providing an environment conducive to the formation of a sisterhood dedicated towards the development of self, family,

society and country.

I requested a meeting with my team to share my vision of the first Women in Business Expo and the WASD to collaborate with the foundation to make this a reality. All agreed we now had to strategize how it was going to happen.

I believe God always had a plan for us and he certainly had big plans for collaborations in the lives of women in business.

My friend Richard called from Trinidad to tell me his friend Nicole Dyer Griffith wanted to come to Guyana to host Oxygen with Nicole which is a motivational series in collaboration with SNFCA.I was both honored and thrilled at the possibilities of this partnership.

We decided we would have the expo one day and 0xegen with Nicole the next Both events were exceptional and the feedback from patrons very complimentary.

Women telling their intimate stories to inspire others without feeling people will look at them differently.

Women in Business 2016 afforded more than 40 female entrepreneurs, 35 of whom are Guyanese, an opportunity to showcase their craft and services offered. These women are farmers, environmentalists, up-cyclers and recycling crafters, event planners, artists, immigration consultants, barristers, fashion designers, wood crafters, body and hair care consultants etc. Two workshops hosted by Scotia bank and Eric Phillips were held ahead of the exhibition assisting to equip entrepreneurs with the requisite tools to develop and market their individual brands.

This challenged us to come out of our shells and express our thoughts and ideas. Over all it was an event that will forever be a part of my memory, I was able to develop networking skills and establish lifetime friendships.

When I entered the Pegasus lobby that Saturday morning for the opening of the expo words could not describe the feeling I experienced looking at all those beautiful exotic displays of business all owned by women.

Former Minister of Social Protection, Ms. Volda Lawrence, opted to “big up the women in Guyana” for taking the initiative to participate in the expo. “There is not a single country that I have been to and looked at a product and not asked, “Why can’t we do this in Guyana”. Through (Sonia Noel and her team) and all of you here, that question that I have often asked, is now a reality.

Shewjattan affirmed, “You don’t really hear piano covers of those types of music so people tend to love those.”

Though Shane boasts his own electric grand piano at home, he would usually serenade his colleagues at Queen’s College with his renditions of popular songs on the school’s grand piano.

When he begins to play, students would flutter into the auditorium to be closer to the musical magic and sing along to the tunes he would be playing.

Many of his friends at Queen’s College attest that he is a master of the piano in his own right especially since he plays different genres of music- outside of the usual classical piano music. Shane himself even highlighted that his supportive friends would

request him to cover certain songs and they were the ones who encouraged him to start sharing his pieces on social media.

Using a social media outlet that allows you to share photos and short videos, Instagram, Shane would upload his piano covers done right at home for his friends and the small, but growing fan-base he has developed so far.

His unorthodox piano covers include songs such as ‘Ova Dweet’ and ‘After All’ by dancehall artistes, Popcaan and Alkaline; a cover of the Ed Sheeran song ‘Shape of You’ that has quickly become a worldwide favorite and other well-known pop songs and even a rendition of a 2013 Bollywood hit- ‘Tum Hi Ho’.

ularity among the Instagram savvy teens and young adults in Guyana. An excited Shane related that he has been receiving a lot of positive feedback from his Ova Dweet cover with all of his friends just “sharing and sharing” the video.

He related that anyone seeking to have a quick preview of his music would be able to find these covers along with other snippets of the young pianist’s life on his Instagram account: @shaneiken.

However, while social media is currently his only outlet for sharing his talent with others, Shane also noted that he had played at his secondary school’s speech night prize giving ceremony and his school’s Christmas concert, but nothing outside of that realm. He mentioned that he wouldn’t mind playing for local events.

“I don’t think I’ll ever stop playing music.

XXIX more of a lifestyle,” he said as explained that he intends on pursuing studies in the field of Computer Science and will be attending the University of South Florida from September of this year.

While many would opt to develop this talent and develop it professionally, Shane hearteningly affirmed, “I honestly don’t see myself studying it, because I want it to remain as something I want to do and not something I have to do.”

Nevertheless, he also said, “I plan on keeping music very close to me, wherever I go, and see where it takes me.”

Before ending his chat with the Guyana Chronicle, Shane advanced that for any young musicians out there, “Keep practicing, keep playing and surround yourself with people that push you and allow you to do what you love.”

US white couple gets prison for harassing blacks

Washington (AFP) - A white couple has been handed heavy prison sentences in Georgia for shouting slurs and death threats at guests at a black child's birthday party.

A Georgia state court sentenced the two, Joel Torres and Kayla Norton, a respective 20 years and 15 years in prison on Monday.

They were convicted of making terroristic threats and violating the state's Street Gang Terrorism Prevention Act,

according to local media. Torres also was convicted of aggravated assault.

In July 2015, the couple were part of a group riding in pickup trucks draped with the Confederate flag, the South's flag in the Civil War and today considered a symbol of racism by many Americans.

After harassing African-American drivers, the convoy stopped in front of the home of a black family in Douglasville who were celebrating the birthday of an eight-year-old child.

One member of the group, which calls itself Respect the Flag, brandished a shotgun, while others hurled insults and threatened to kill the partygoers.

The display of the controversial flag was not at issue in the case as it is protected by the US Constitution's free speech guarantee, said Brian Fortner, the Douglas County prosecutor.

"Instead, this case was about a group of people riding around our community, drinking alcohol, harassing and intimidating our citizens because of the color of their skin," he said in a statement.

"They used racial slurs and threatened to kill some of the partygoers. They even threatened to kill children at the party."

More than one hundred and fifty years after the end of the US Civil War, racism still afflicts the United States.

Torres and Norton's sentencing came less than two months after a federal judge in South Carolina sentenced white supremacist Dylann Roof to death over the killing of nine black churchgoers in June 2015.

Guyanese scholar on the rise GUYANA is the third-smallest independent state on the mainland of South America. About 83 percent of the country is covered by tropical rain forests, and there is an abundance of gold, minerals and precious stones—but many of those resources potentially remain untapped.

This is one of the reasons why Nikita La Cruz 13, who is originally from Guyana, is pursuing a career as an economic geologist/geochemist. The job of an economic geologist is to identify earth materials that can be used for economic purposes.

“Guyana is a country where access to the basic things people need, like education and healthcare, is limited—I think that using our mineral resources and discovering new ones can help [provide the economic support needed],” said La Cruz.

The Chemistry and Environmental Studies double major was attracted to Gettysburg by the offer of a scholarship and the opportunity to study at a competitive liberal arts college in the United States. Post-Gettysburg, she contin-

ued her studies, receiving her master’s at the University of South Florida, and is currently a second year student in the economic geology Ph.D. programme at the University of Michigan. Only three years after graduating from Gettysburg, her research was cited in NASA’s Astrobiology Magazine. Once she’s earned her Ph.D., La Cruz plans to return home to Guyana to fill what she says is a tremendous need for geochemists who have the skills to assist in cataloging the country’s existing mineral deposits and discovering new ones.

“Right now our mining industry focuses on gold, bauxite and diamonds, but I think there are opportunities to explore for and discover other types of deposits,” said La Cruz. “The Turn to page XXXIII ►►►

only geological reports we get are from mining companies that go into Guyana looking for specific minerals. Using geochemistry and geophysics, we should hopefully be able to get a better idea of whether or not there are other minerals that are present below the dense jungle cover.”

Geochemistry encompasses the study of Earth’s composition, and the geochemist’s job is to use his or her knowledge of Earth’s structure and geological processes to make informed research decisions that may have practical industrial applications. La Cruz’s area of focus is the formation of ore deposits. She seeks to understand the processes that cause economically and industrially important elements, like gold, iron, copper and the rare earths, to be concentrated into very small regions of the earth’s crust.

“If we understand ore deposits well, we know what to look for when we go out in the field, and this can be used to give people an idea of what to expect when they go to places where it’s likely that these processes could have occurred,” said La Cruz. So instead of cutting down forests to look for gold or other minerals, miners—with the help of the economic geologists—can be more intentional about where they mine, using these clues to make smart decisions about

where profitable resources are likely to be found. The goal is to preserve biodiversity while still exploring for minerals.

A HAT TIP FROM NASA La Cruz became interested in the synthesis of minerals while taking Prof. Joseph Grzybowski’s inorganic chemistry class during her senior year at Gettysburg and chose the University of South Florida master’s program for the opportunity to do that work. There, she conducted research funded by the Center for Chemical Evolution and NASA to investigate the chemical evolution of life on Earth.

“The thought is that there had to be chemical evolution before biological evolution,” said La Cruz.

La Cruz and fellow researchers set out to discover the origin of phosphorus, a chemical element that is important for many reasons, including serving as the backbone of the nucleotides that make up RNA and DNA and the building block for the structure of cell membranes.

of phosphorus since they contain a phosphorus-bearing mineral called schreibersite. So, as part of their project, La Cruz and a colleague showed how a synthesized form of schreibersite—which mimics the iron nickel phosphide mineral found in iron meteorites—reacts when exposed to water. As the water evaporates, phosphorus-oxygen bonds form on the surface of the schreibersite. The finding is significant because it supports the hypothesis that meteorites could be responsible for bringing phosphorus to Earth.

“When I was getting involved in the project, I had no idea how many people were interested [in the research project],” said La Cruz. Her master’s advisor encouraged her to write a paper about her findings. That published paper is what would later get picked up by Astrobiology Magazine and earn her a prestigious thesis award from the University of South Florida.

“My parents taught me to do my best without thinking

about whether I would be rewarded for my actions,” said La Cruz. “I never set out to do something to be recognized. I just always work hard and do what needs to be done, but it was nice to be recognized for my hard work.”

A LOVE OF ROCKS La Cruz attributes what she calls her “love of rocks” to taking Environmental Studies Prof. Sarah Principato’s earth systems science class as an undergraduate. Her senior capstone project combined her environmental studies and chemistry coursework, focusing on measuring the amount of lead in soil, which she then mapped using Geographic Information Systems—a skill that is useful to her work as an economic geologist.

“That was my first research experience and good preparation,” said La Cruz. “Coming from a small country, the education I received at Gettysburg was world class. The combination of theoretical and hands on learning prepared me very well for moving into geology, conducting independent research, and developing the skills I needed to perform well in graduate school. I am very grateful for the funding Gettysburg provided, my professors, my family and friends and everyone who helped me along the way.”

Abuse I was determined to stop – It took another man to show me what self-worth is

By M Margaret Burke “WHEN I read the Valentine’s Day story, which was published in your newspapers yesterday (Wednesday, February 22) I realised there and then that I must share my story too and hope that it may help this woman and others.”

Wanda (not her real name) stated that she met her former reputed husband when she was 16 years old and she was just out of school. She didn’t get a chance to write the CXC and was living in Georgetown.

Her mother was the head of the household and she had three other siblings, all younger and hardly in school. “It was a one-bedroom apartment and my mother hung a blind

between the two beds to separate us and make us feel private and I guess she needed the privacy even more,” Wanda said.

This young woman, who is now 38 years old, spoke of her mother in glowing terms, even though she expressed the view that if her mother had just a little more time to nurture and care for her and her siblings, they may have achieved much more in life.

SECURITY GUARD “My mother was a security guard, who worked for long hours and many times all through the night. In addition, her salary was small and many times we had serious needs in the home, even for meals – sometimes we would plan to just cook one solid meal for the day and this was always late in

the afternoons; in the meantime, we hardly had anything to eat during the day.”

Wanda explained that those were really hard times for the small family and that there were times when she became very sad, especially whenever, “I saw my little sister, who would have been about twelve at the time, cry when she was hungry and would complain that she belly was hurting – that was when she got ‘wind’ pain.”

However, as time went by she said that she met the guy – Nathan (his real name), who became her reputed husband for seven years. “He was much older than me, he was 37 and throughout the relationship I saw him more like the father I never had. In fact, he was three years older than my own mother – so you could imagine.” But then, according to Wanda, “The man turned out to be very nice at first. He showed a lot of respect to my mother and love for my younger siblings. Life sort of changed for all of us because he had a good job and spent a lot of money on us; he would carry me on the road to get what we needed in the house and I used to be very happy.”

Wanda went on to say, “At first Nathan just used to look at me and smile and touch, me. Then, like a few months or

so after, he started to hug and kiss me and I liked it,” she said with a playful smile. She stated that they eventually got very intimate and she became pregnant.

MOVED AWAY FROM HOME Soon after Nathan realised that Wanda was pregnant he discussed with her mother that he wanted to move her into a more comfortable home. Her mother agreed and in any case, according to Wanda, she was more than anxious to go into a better home and more than that, to live with her lover. “He was like a ‘best friend’ to me and I could not see him doing anything wrong.” She stated that Nathan had already prepared the home that he asked for her to move to and when she eventually got there, “It was like magic; in my young eyes the home was nice, nice. Wanda said that they started to get along very well and there were no problems at first; she said that he showed her many things about taking care of a house and even about cooking, washing, even her hygiene. “He showed me so many things; I believed in him.”

Wedding Expo now in its 9th year

NINE years after the launch of the Guyana Wedding tourism extravaganza ‘Wedding Expo’, organisers of the affair which carry the tag line ‘magnificent beginnings’ said they are optimistic of the push the event will create in wedding tourism even as legislations are making accommodations for such development.

Roraima Airways Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Captain Gerry Gouveia said recently that 2017 – the United Nations year dedicated internationally to Sustainable Tourism Development – marks the ninth anniversary for Wedding Expo and is one with a difference for Guyana’s tourism industry with weddings becoming a major attraction.

“This is actually nine years and it looks like only yesterday. Yesterday when we first saw the Wedding Expo in Jamaica, when we first conceptualized it in Guyana, we did not expect what happened,” Captain Gouveia told a gathering at the launch of the festival of blooming love.

He said in Jamaica, the picture the Roraima family saw was a Christian wedding, but when the festival was intro-

duced to Guyana, it brought a multi-cultural flair that is unique to Guyana.

“When we saw Wedding Expo in Jamaica, it was Christian weddings, it was white dresses. When we came here and launched Wedding Expo, it surprised even us that wedding expo became an amazing spectacle of colours, of religions, of music and dance and cultures, and it really brought together in one place a diversity an amazing wedding differences in all our peoples here in Guyana, it’s amazing.”

“Wedding expo keeps growing from strength to strength.

One of the most spectacular things about wedding expo is the creation of opportunities for small businesses. Wedding expo provides the platform for small businesses to showcase themselves and then the people who want to get married that will come here … are able to come in one place to plan their wedding.

He watched wedding expo grow from year to year and it is now formally one of the items on the Calendar of Events in Guyana. the prospect of hosting weddings in Guyana.

“It is one of the items that is formally supported by the government of Guyana and I would say that the Ministry of Tourism and Business is fully supportive of Wedding Expo last year. Wedding Expo is one of those activities that help promote Guyana as well. You’re also going to see a lot of the Cubans that are coming to Guyana every week on our flights out of Havana. They’re going to be here as well scouting our wedding tourism to satisfy the wedding market as well in Cuba. We hope to see a lot more of the region looking at our wedding market as well,” Captain Gouveia pointed out.

He said too that the local private sector now has collaboration with the private sector in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) for stronger integration in business and tourism.

“We are going to be linking St. Vincent and Guyana with our Dynamic Flights and our flights out of Havana as well.

And we are going to be linking the people from St. Vincent into Guyana with our Wedding Expo.”

Guyana is now being promoted as a ‘Wedding Tourism’ destination with Wedding Expo being a catalyst to promote wedding tourism which has been a huge business in the industry in the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia and some other Caribbean countries; it is a huge business.

“They call them destination weddings… and those countries accommodate young people wanting to get married.

Here in Guyana our legislation was a deterrent. If you want to come to get married in Guyana, you had to be here two weeks, and you had to go through all kinds of hoops and loops.”

Government’s decision to make adjustments to legislation will give lovers options to make Guyana their perfect wedding paradise destination, and open windows of opportunity for wedding professionals.

In 2016 Roraima Duke Lodge hosted quite a few international weddings, one being that of a hindu family which attracted over 250 foreign guests. These tourists checked in at hotels, went on tours to Kaieteur among other places, and ate in restaurants at all times.

“If we could duplicate that a hundred times a year think about the amount of employment it would create…. I am happy to say that it’s only this year I read that the government is now committed to changing that legislation. And I believe for the first time, we are now going to be able to actively market Guyana as a wedding destination,” Gouveia said.

The exhibition receives strong support from the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), the revived Tourism Board and the Ministry of Business, and Gouveia said he is “very very optimistic about tourism development in Guyana and where wedding tourism fits into this. Wedding tourism this year is going to be very very dynamic… we are going to see a lot more weddings coming to Guyana this year and wedding tourism is gonna be on,” Gouveia pointed out.

“I got the baby – a beautiful baby girl, my sunshine, she was like my everything in my life. Then I started to get these strange feelings, feelings of fear – I did not ever want anything to go wrong with her; then I feared that if there were to be a separation with me and her father, that he would not want to take her away from me and so I started to give thoughts to being able to do some sort of work so that I could help to take care her; and worse of all I began to see feel a bit sorry for myself – that here I was, because of circumstances, with a man who can be my father.”

Wanda said that she did not think that was being ungrateful and would never want to be that way, but was beginning to realise soon after the birth of the baby that Nathan was becoming more and more ‘bossy’. “Is like if he was really playing father for me and the baby – the way he would talk to me now; he would even grab me and turn me around in the direction of something he is talking about; when I give my view on something and he is not pleased, he would slap me on my mouth – not hard, but like a father may do to his child. That would really get me mad and be tempted to do it back to him, but I was afraid.”

SITUATION GOT BAD Nathan continued to be a good provider, according to Wanda. He even made her prepare a list of things she needed personally, as well as for the home and he provided them.

“But then he started to dictate in some of the worse manners.

One of the things that he did that made me feel both fear and hate, is that he would drag my breast out of my baby’s mouth because he felt that six month was good enough time for her to take breast-feed and that she was dragging down my breast and causing it to loose shape.” Wanda said that many times she would go in a corner and cried because seeing her cry annoyed him and would cause him to rough her up.

“Then my first sound licking from Nathan came as a result of me not cooking what he instructed me to prepare for lunch one Sunday. He left to go on the road, by then he wasn’t saying where he was going anymore, and told me to prepare some roti, along with some curried chicken, cook some rice and make some lemon juice. I did everything he asked me to, except cook the rice and for than he decided to really beat me up.”

Wanda noted that this type of situation started to happen at least once a week, until it got to almost every day. “Many times I wanted to fight him back and I really felt that I could have put up a fight with him, but I always considered my baby – if she was caught in the middle of it all. All I thought of was her and always tried to stay far from her whenever there was a problem.”

I WANTED OUT The woman noted that the years went by quickly and before she knew it she was twenty-three and her baby was six, even as the situation continued unabated. “I made up my mind that I would not stay in this situation for much longer, but I had to pretend that all was well, especially for the sake of my baby.” She explained that once she realised that her reputed husband was going to have a long day at work she would leave her baby with her sister and go about looking for a job. “Even though I did not get to write the CXC I could read and write well, and I learned a few things along the way, which I thought could have helped me to get a decent job and then I can take some lessons in the afternoons. I desired something to do where I could find time for my daughter, to assist her with her schoolwork and other things.”

On one of her expeditions to find a job she walked into an office and met with an elderly man, whom she said eventually told her that she can be his granddaughter. He, in the end, offered her a job (where she is still working) and he had to counsel her repeatedly in order to help her to be the woman she is today.

“I confided in him from start because somehow I knew that I could. In fact, I was of such low self-esteem that I was ready to have an affair with him, once he would give me the job, but he refused to go that way and told me that I could be his granddaughter and that he loved and cared for his children and grandchildren very much.” Wanda said that the man, who is now deceased, taught her so much about life; helped her to move out of the situation she found herself in; encouraged her to take evening classes; gained qualifications and got promoted over and over. “It took another man to show me what self-worth really is.” mercilinburke2017@gmail.com

Your study of adjectives and adverbs should have a real purpose: to help you build better sentences. Be wise.

Love you GRAMMAR Reminders about Some Functions of Adjectives and Adverbs Well, let us simply say that adjectives are words that modify nouns or pronouns by describing or limiting them. Thus adjectives are highly useful in making more explicit what you have to say. If you study adjectives well you should recognise that they do help to build better sentences.

We will look at descriptive adjectives and how they are used in various positions.

Adverb Functions Adverbs function mainly as modifiers of verbs, but they sometimes modify other words as well as phrases and whole sentences. Well-chosen adverbs help build good sentences. Observe the most common adverb functions below: a) Modifying a verb: In general, single-word modifiers of verbs are thought of as adverbs.

The grass grew over.

Garden manure rot wonderfully after some months.

Quality will not be discussed again.

Adverbs, that modify verbs, shift position freely.

We often see each other.

We see each other often. b) Modifying a linking-verb complement: An adverb may modify an adjective used as a linking-verb complement.

Bette Davis, Joan Crawford's bitter rivalry comes alive in 'Feud' ONE of Hollywood's most famous rivalries is taking center stage in a new television series, as "Feud" explores a salacious battle between Golden Age screen legends Joan Crawford and Bette Davis.

"Feud," FX's new anthology series premiering on Sunday, will star Susan Sarandon as Davis and Jessica Lange as Crawford in a stylized retelling of their legendary clashes whilst filming 1962's Oscar-nominated thriller "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"

Davis and Crawford's bitter rivalry escalated throughout their careers, their scathing barbs embedded into Hollywood lore. Crawford died in 1977 and Davis died

in 1989.

At the show's red carpet premiere on Wednesday, Sarandon, 70, told Reuters that the role of Davis "has been chasing me for years," but the task of depicting the Hollywood star had seemed daunting until now.

"I was really scared. I wasn't really sure I wanted to do it," the actress said.

While the series is set against the backdrop of Hollywood's Golden Age - the rise of studio films from the 1920s to the 1960s - Jessica Lange, 67, said Hollywood continues to be a harsh environment for woman.

"The pressure is still there because you have five actresses who would be right for one part but only obviously one person (gets it). So there is a natural kind of competitive atmosphere always in Hollywood," she said.

Catherine Zeta-Jones who co-stars in "Feud" as Olivia de Havilland, said she was surprised to discover how competitive it was for women in film during the Golden Age. She added that her 100-year-old father-in-law Kirk Douglas, a star of the Golden Age, helped her prepare for the role.

"I think the strength of women who had to survive this, through the knocks, through the aging process, having your face on a twenty-by-twenty foot screen and people critiquing you, that is the same as today," she said.

Series creator Ryan Murphy, known for FX's "American Horror Story" and "American Crime Story" anthology series, said the show's subject matter is still relevant in present-day Hollywood.

"It deals with sexism and misogyny and the idea of woman fighting for very few opportunities in Hollywood,

and I think not a lot has changed," he said.

"It is a way to shed a light on a very specific sort

of injustice and ask 'why does that keep happening?' and 'why can't we do better?'"

Ingredients 1 1/2 cups pigeon peas 1 large carrot diced 1/2 cup celery (diced) 2 cups rice (brown par boiled) 1.5 cup coconut milk 2.5 cups water eschallot 2 chili pepper 2 pimento peppers (optional) 1/2 cup diced bell pepper 1 tablespoon parsley 2 sprigs thyme 2 cloves garlic 1/4 teaspoon grated ginger 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 heaping tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon veg oil 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Method This is the only critical step in making this vegetarian pelau as if it goes beyond the amber/frothy color we’re looking for the finished dish WILL have sort of burnt taste and we don’t want that. The sugar will melt, then go a rich golden colour, before going frothy and a deep amber color. This is when we want to go in the diced carrot, celery and pigeon peas .Make sure the peas are drained well after washing. Move around the vegetables and let it cook/brown for about 4 minutes.

Now you will have a deep brown base to help color the entire dish (pelau isn’t supposed to be pale). Add the other ingredients, with the rice, coconut milk and water going in last.

Go in with the chili pepper (leave whole so we get flavor and not the raw heat – remember to remove them before serving). Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle boil with the lid on the pot. Stir every 5 minutes and cook for about 25-30 minutes.. until all the liquid is gone. Do remember to taste for salt and adjust accordingly. TIP: If you find that the pelau is pale in color you can go in with a bit Caribbean food browning. There are two ways people like their finished pelau. Grainy rice or a bit overcooked with the rice being a little mushy or creamy. So adjust your cooking time to accommodate your preference.
