First Year of Rotary Club of Garden City

By Francis Quamina Farrier FOUNDED a year ago in September 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic raged around Guyana and the rest of the world, a group of 33 patriotic Guyanese banded themselves together and founded the Rotary Club of Garden City - Georgetown. Each member felt that their involvement could make a positive difference to the quality of life of their fellow Guyanese. As most citizens would agree, there is the need for many more individuals and groups who are focused on giving more of themselves to work for the genuine development of the Guyana society at large.

The important discipline of not littering or dumping garbage illegally, here, there and anywhere, is needed so much in Guyana at this time. While there are exemplary citizens who do the right things most of the time, there are just too many who lack the urge to extract the line from the country’s National Pledge which states in part, “To Love My fellow citizen.”

The founding of the Ro-

tary Club of Garden City last year was a very bold act by very dedicated citizens. It was at an extremely difficult and depressing time as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to take its death toll higher and higher locally and globally. The number of Guyanese and people all over the world becoming ill and quite a number dying is not only depressing, but also frightening. However, that did not deter those 33 Guyanese citizens from proving their mental and physical grit in many worthy projects.

While still in its first year, the club received a Citation from Rotary International for helping Rotary open opportunities in the lives of Guyanese.

To carry on their humanitarian work, the club held fundraisers during their first year of existence. The club also benefited from a Rotary District Grant. Local supporters were also willing to give a helping hand. Set goals were equally given full support by the membership who braved the coronavirus pandemic to get things done in very difficult times. One of their benefactors was the Cheshire Home. As part of the district’s Childhood Obesity Prevention Cam-

paign, the “Eat Well, Move Well” book was published and donated to the National Library. The construction of a Shade House and vegetable garden and external, raised beds to serve as a mini fruit farm was also undertaken while the COVID-19 pandemic raged.

When those 33 brave Guyanese got together on September 17, 2020, and established the newest Rotary club in Guyana, with the title “Rotary Club of Garden City,” they proved that there are those citizens who are true patriots.

Someone in the diaspora once said, “The wise ones left.” in reference to the massive migration of decades ago. But some of those who stayed, like the 33 dedicated members of Rotary Club of Garden City, selflessly and wisely, solve problems by being engaged in such projects by the Rotary Club of Garden City; as service projects that encourage communities and individuals to adopt eco-friendly life style changes. The continuous “Bags, Bins and Bottles” projects are fine examples. Then there is the sale of branded, reusable, multi-purpose canvas bags

by this club to reduce the use of plastic. The club also made a distribution of garbage bins to the Guyana National Park’s Commission to create a clean and healthy environment and the distribution of mini reusable water bottles to schoolchildren as part of the district’s Childhood Obesity Prevention Cam-

paign. That is to encourage children to drink more water and become healthier.

The Rotary Club of Garden city, Georgetown, Guyana, has completed its first year of service to the Guyanese people. Their goal is to try and solve some of the myriad problems, one at a time.

Yes, those individuals could have left, but they chose to

remain and enjoy the many important tasks of nation building. It may not be swift. But as the Guyanese saying goes, “One, one dutty build dam.” Or as the Italians say, “Rome was not built in a day.” Best wishes to the Rotary Club of Garden City as they enter their second year.

He ended up in Georgetown solely to complete his secondary and tertiary education and is now an environmental officer with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in George-

town.

Even as he loves his line of work and what he can accomplish through it, nothing beats being in his village.

“The familiarity with the food, language and people makes me feel a sense of belonging and elation while being there,” he told Pepperpot Magazine lately.

sional when he entered the science stream at President’s College, but upon leaving and spending a year in his village, he realised the dire need for environmental management.

It was then that he decided to pursue his tertiary education in the environmental field at the University of Guyana. “I have no regrets for the diversion, as I understand the importance of my current career,” he expressed.

At the EPA, Romario mostly enjoys working in the fields. “I always tell people I am not an exclusive office person because I believe maintaining a balance is imperative to our overall well-being,” he said.

“Conducting fieldwork as a prerequisite for authorising and regulating

mining projects is quite fulfilling for me because it gives me the opportunity to physically interact with the environment,” he added.

Romario feels that access to quality education and investment in digital literacy can greatly enhance the lives of his fellow indigenous peoples, as he believes that these two areas are the key pillars propelling society to greater heights.

“It would not only offer indigenous villages a chance to attain education, but it will enable the capacity to engage in public discourses, exchange and share their culture…and access information, which is critical to decision-making within the communities,” he explained.

In observing Amerindian Heritage Month, Romario feels that more needs to be

done for the sustenance and development of indigenous culture.

“Cultures evolve, and it should not only be a month to showcase, but a time to reflect on the current elements of our culture and identify ways how we can utilise and transform for the benefit of our future generations and the country,” he said.

Romario is hoping that cultural development will become more of a priority for the ministry overseeing indigenous affairs.

50 golden years in education

HALF of a century is always a momentous and significant achievement for anyone, particularly in an area of speciality.

The Pepperpot Magazine spoke with Technical Officer/Facilitator to the Chief Education Officer (CEO) and former Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission, Francesca Vieira, about her life and career in education, which spans 50 years.

Born and raised in the village of Moruca in Region One (Barima / Waini), Vieira began her teaching career at just 15.

“I started my formal education at the age of four because, according to the Catholic Nuns, I was able to read the textbooks quite fluently, so they admitted me before the required age

which was five years. I guess that is why I was able to complete my primary and post-primary education at the early age of 14 years,” Vieira told Pepperpot Magazine in an interview.

Vieira recalled that there were no opportunities to further her studies at the time because her parents could not afford to provide accommodation for her to attend a secondary school in Georgetown, which was made available to her by the Catholic nuns,who managed most of the Catholic Schools in the country in those days.

So she completed her education at the Santa Rosa Primary School.

She noted that at the beginning, teaching was not her preferred choice of career.

She wanted to be a nurse.

issues of importance to the indigenous communities.

She would especially like to see a revision of the act governing Guyana’s indigenous peoples that considers traditional land rights, the strengthening of government systems with the respective villages, and the education system being upgraded so that those communities are brought on par with coastal ones.

La Rose would also like to see indigenous women and girls participate in the decision-making of their villages.

choices, for the Teachers Training College and for the Guyana School of Nursing, which were done just like days apart and surprisingly, I got accepted for [the] Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), but was not accepted for the Nursing School.

That was a turning point for me. Thus, it helped me to make a decision on a nursing career or to continue in the teaching profession,” she told Pepperpot Magazine.

Vieira is the second child of five siblings and the only teacher/educator in her immediate family. However, she has three nieces who are also in the teaching profession.

She recalled the first time she worked in the education fraternity.

“Well, my experience as a Pupil Teacher and Temporary Unqualified Mistress at Santa Rosa RC School for six years geared me to function effectively in the classroom.

After completing the upgrading examinations (end of Third-Year and Fourth-Year Teachers’ Examinations) I was admitted to the Cyril Potter College of Education in 1977. When I graduated in 1979, I was unable to return to Santa Rosa School because of illness. So based on the advice of a caring Principal, Ms Olive Lyken at that time, I was appointed at the Montrose Primary School on the East Coast of Demerara. This was not my

choice, but because of illness, I had no other option but to remain so that I could easily access medical treatment.

Being a young female away from home and with financial constraints, I went through a tough time as it relates to accessing suitable living accommodation,” Vieira told the Pepperpot Magazine.

Giving up is not an option Asked whether there were times when she felt like giving up, Vieira responded that she saw education as a way of getting out of poverty since she and her family often experienced financial constraints.

“I believe that education is a means of upliftment both financially and socially, and so I was eager to study and work, whether it was as a teacher or in any other field, so that I could progress and even further my studies. I must say that both of my parents were always very supportive, even though they were not fortunate to complete their formal education.

Nevertheless, they did their best by providing the basic necessities to ensure that we completed our formal education and qualified ourselves in whatever field we chose,” She told the Pepperpot Magazine.

Motivators and Inspirators Vieira disclosed that the Catholic Nuns, former Principal Ms Lyken, and other tutors of CPCE were among the people who inspired and motivated her in her career as a teacher.

The educator noted that she always had people who inspired her along her career path.

“I got my satisfaction by simply helping and empowering students/teachers with whom I interact as I worked and travelled from region to region, during my tenure, while I served and continue to serve in the various positions,” she said.

In a recent article published by the Guyana Chronicle on September 14, 2021, it was revealed that Vieira has served as a public servant/ educator for 50 years.

Her legacy can be viewed as an esteemed educator who has made significant contributions towards the development of the education sector of Guyana. On many occasions she has been commended for her dedicated and unselfish service as an educator and public servant According to the article, many persons could also attest that she is a strong, passionate advocate for the educational development of hinterland and riverine communities, for which she must be applauded.

Roberts stressed that he witnessed many Guyanese suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and even cancer. He firmly believes that one of the main contributing factors to this is poor eating habits. As such, Calvin’s Indigenous Cuisine wishes to gear and encourage the Guyanese population to make healthy eating choices. In doing so, it will ultimately increase their longevity on earth.

“Very often, I’ve noticed that after the long month of heritage celebrations ended at the Sophia Exhibition [Centre], many could not find indigenous delicacies if they wished to have them in October or January. The Guyanese populace will have to wait eagerly in September every year to have Indigenous delicacies,” said Calvin.

He further stated that “This is the narrative Calvin’s Indigenous Cuisine wishes to change and in doing so, we plan to provide indigenous delicacies all year through to promote our culture and heritage. People no longer will have to wait until the month of September for Indigenous meals.” Calvin and his team believe that this is one of the best ways they can uphold their rich culture by allowing others to indulge in their sumptuous delicacies. This had been one of my biggest challenges, but I had to aggressively save and made sacrifices to launch my business. a wide array of dishes and beverages, some of which include; Labba Tuma, Capybara Tuma, Farine, Cassava Cakes and the Mighty Fly. As a young Indigenous entrepreneur, he wants to encourage his fellow indigenous brothers and sisters to be proud of their heritage, culture and identity.

This makes it much easier for you to share with the world, whether it be through a dance, a poem, a song or even through Indigenous cuisine. Calvin explained that one must love and appreciate his being and identity or it will be difficult for someone else to do so. He also urges other indigenous youths never to let anyone limit their potential. “We are educated, we

have ambition and potential like any other ethnic group.

We can be businessmen and women too. Do not let anyone belittle you or compromise your standards for anyone. Our culture is rich and we are responsible to promote it and maintain our heritage,” said Calvin.

Roberts and his team would like to urge Guyanese and tourists to visit their restaurant for an Indigenous cuisine experience like no other. They would also like to ask all Guyanese to support indigenous businesses, regardless if it’s September or not. By Michel Outridge THIS week the Pepperpot Magazine visited the hilltop village of Prosville, Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) to highlight the way of life of the people and the village.

Prosville is a picturesque hilltop village where the breeze is cool and the atmosphere is crisp and fresh.

It is one of those villages where you go and fall in love with the scenery and want

to stay a bit longer than you should.

Prosville Village is a developing community where houses are still being constructed and the landscape is changing rapidly.

There are about 332 house lots with just over 200 residents of Indian descent, Afro Guyanese and some Amerindians.

The village has about seven internal streets which were freshly capped with loam about two weeks ago, because they previously had

a dry-weather road and when it rained, the place became muddy and messy.

The village has electricity but is yet to benefit from potable water supply, which is a necessity. There is a wireless internet service provided by a Lindener, but there is no landline phone service.

The people of Prosville Optimistic about development and life

By Michel Outridge EVEN though it is a small house, it is just right for living a comfortable life.

Three years ago, 65-yearold Lennox Richards, a pensioner, was allocated a plot of land in the village and the money he had could only build a one-bedroom house so he went ahead and did just that. Today he is a homeowner who leads a good life in Prosville Village.

It is a nice little house, painted and well-kept place which has a homey feel to it. The yard is spacious and well-kept and it is a lovely piece of land which was developed by Richards over time.

The house has inside washroom facilities, a small kitchen and a bedroom which is perfect for Richards, who

“You see, I built my little

“I am comfortable here and this is a good place to have a quiet life, so life is good,” he said.

Dreams do come true Single mother and her children’s lives changed by a timely intervention by Regional Police

By Michel Outridge A FEW months ago, the thought of owning her own home seemed impossible and beyond her reach, but kind people came together and constructed a lovely two-bedroom house for Malika Thomas and her two children.

Thomas, a single mother of two, is a resident of Prosville, Wismar, Linden and she is very happy to be in her own house which is also furnished. Her dream of owning her home became a reality when the region’s police stepped in along with stakeholders.

It was during a police outreach to the village that ranks were dismayed at the

living conditions of Thomas and her two small children who were living in a small concrete shop without doors or windows,and exposed to the elements.

The shop is a small structure that is incomplete and Thomas, who had nowhere to go, was forced to stay there for three months before she had a breakthrough.

The 26-year-old seemed very happy in her new home and she is indeed very thankful to the police and the others who made it happen.

She plans to get a job so she can provide for her children and get herself organised to rebuild her once shattered life.

Thomas is a victim of domestic abuse and suffered

at the hands of her abuser for many years before she finally mustered the courage to leave.

On August 6, 2021, the brand new two-bedroom furnished house was officially handed over to Thomas and her children by Police Commander Hugh Winter, who was present to cut the ribbon, signalling the opening of the house.

Presently she is unemployed and would depend on hand-outs from people in the neighbourhood, but she wants to change all that by getting a job to put food on the table and pay her bills.

“I feel very fortunate because this house is a gift for life and it is time I change my life around for the better

because I prayed for this miracle and it happened, so I want my children to have a good life and we will take care of this house,” she said.

The house came with electricity and a black tank that stores rainfall water for home use and has indoor washroom facilities.

Reliving her ordeal of being homeless, Thomas said that at times she had very little to nothing to eat and neighbours would step in and give them a meal and often, she felt defeated because she could not help herself.

She contemplated suicide, but then she prayed and the police visited and they saw her need and worked towards providing her a house.

Thomas told the Pepperpot Magazine that she is beyond grateful and whenever she talks about it she is moved to tears because today she is a homeowner and it goes to show that dreams do come true.

“I was desperate and I had nothing or nowhere to go, but God saw my need because he knows my heart

and send people to help me and my children and for that I have faith and I believe that my suffering has come to an end,” she said.

Thomas disclosed that to get, one must give, and it is the thought that counts. She wants to encourage women who may be trapped in similar situations in life to get out of abusive relationships because life is worth living despite the challenges of walking away from everything.

At the opening ceremony, Regional Commander Senior Superintendent Hugh Winter said the initiative to construct the house was set in gear after ranks, during an outreach to the community in January, met with the mother and saw her unfavourable living conditions.

However, in January, the entire administrative team visited the location and after speaking in depth with Thomas, it was decided she needed help and they reached out to stakeholders for assistance.

“On arrival, we were

taken aback at the living conditions of Malika and her two daughters. Initially, we had planned to build a toilet and a bath, but with the inspiration of God, we reached out to our stakeholders who assisted in the realisation of Malika’s dream of obtaining her own home,” Winter noted.

The commander said after he and his administrative team decided to assist, the project commenced on February 15, 2021.

Thomas, who was emotional at the opening ceremony, expressed gratitude for being a homeowner with a furnished house.

She made the promise to take good care of the home.

Thomas revealed that she lost her mother at a tender age and reminisced on sad times she spent in her former home as she looks forward to a brighter future for her and her children.

The children were also awarded tablets and other tokens were presented to the family by community stakeholders at the opening ceremony.

Life in the hilltop village of Prosville

By Michel Outridge LIFE for Eric Moore could not be better in Prosville, Wismar, Linden. He has his wife and four children, all together in their own home and has been in that community for the past seven years.

Moore is a happy man and so pleased with his life he gets up at the crack of dawn to clean the yard, makes it tidy before sunshine and gets things organised on his farm.

The main crop of the 49-year-old is fine-leaf thyme; his entire yard is filled with the herb which is used to add flavour to foods and it is also dried and bottled for overseas buyers and is used to make herbal tea, which cleanses the body of impurities.

It is said that fine-leaf

thyme helps with intense pains in the body and helps rid the body of colds.

Due to its benefits, the catchy phrase “thyme to boost your immunity” was coined since the plant is packed with vitamin C and is also a good source of vitamin A. Moore would use fineleaf thyme with oils and other herbs to make a cold medicine and a body cleanser as home remedies.

The farmer also has crops of cassava from which he reaped one root, which weighed 10 pounds as first bearing and he used that in his kitchen.

Moore has some crops of ochro, boulanger, corilla, sweet pepper and other cash crops which are used in the home and the excess are sold.

“I was not getting work

and I became very frustrated and as a spiritual man I had a dream one night that I must plant bare fine-leaf thyme and I did… When I look at that plant it motivates me to plant even more and I got the strength to start planting many crops in my land space,” he said.

“My crops are strictly organic. I do not use any fertiliser and this area has topsoil composition because of the sand, so you have to know how to plant and what to plant here,” he said.

pand his farming to largescale and is hoping to acquire a lease for 75 acres of farmland along the Mabura trail which is about four miles from his home.

The brightly painted, newly opened shop sits at the side of the trail just off Prosville Village and it is at a convenient location where the trail starts to the interior.

This shop, which has adequate seating accommodation just in front of the place, is ideal for weary truckers and others to take a rest and re-charge for the journey.

The shop is managed by Toriano Jefferd, who opened the business a week and a half ago and so far, the response has been good.

The 48-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that the shop has every little thing from groceries to cold beverages and snacks and it is a Truck Rest Stop where trucks are parked to be serviced, truckers can use the washroom facilities and even take a bath, free of charge.

The father of three stated that there is no potable water supply yet, but he would buy a black tank of water for $4,000 just to ensure that people who visit can use clean, running water.

“I applied for the plot behind the shop so I am hoping I can get it, because I want to

plans to have the place fenced and secured, but in time and his prices are reasonable and pocket-friendly since he is providing a reliable service to customers.

The 35-year-old noted that life is fair once you have a job and she is trying to be empowered the same way, but doesn’t want to work with people and invested her savings in a small shop which is in front of her house.

“Life here is quiet and it is a really nice hilltop place to live and my life will be better when I open my shop selling groceries, because I will be earning and working right from my home,” she said.

Martindale started her own small business in the form of a shop and is manning that business while tending to household chores and children.

She is originally from Essequibo but left there since she was a teenager and lived in the city most of her life, then she was allocated a plot of land in Prosville and she relocated after constructing a concrete flat house which sits on a hill.

‘NATION BUILDING IS A WORK OF ART’ captures the evolution and content of the national ethos PT II

WITHOUT evidence of cultural memory and a creative relationship with the spaces we occupy, then we just drift through and are overcome with insignificance with the swift dance of time. In saying that, what then is profound and what is not?

What comprises the legacy of nations through its works to the admiration of friend and foe alike?

Let’s take Russia as an example: what do we know at a first glance of Russia? Is it of Catherine the Great and her exorbitance in comparison to the compositions of Tchaikovsky and the poetry of Alexander Pushkin? The answer is the latter two, in Russia and also abroad. the propaganda and embellishments that pleased even cowardly kings, scheming Princes and halfmad prophets. Still, modern disciplines like archaeology are clarifying ancient royal inspired-artistic misdemeanours.

We in the arts in Guyana must construct the platform to tell the story of our Guyana, the precedents of what our peers have done in the Caribbean and across the Americas are inspiring.

The world is continuing to change, the changes are not entirely in our interest, we don’t own the technology or the ‘missiles’ but the technology in our area, regardless of our limitations, can be utilised.

The platform I’m talking about revolves around the business of the arts, and its rules and tireless work. Somehow the market of global humanity must be accessed, and since we speak a different language, that sometimes even our kindred spirits don’t quite understand, we have got to talk to ourselves first. To begin, we have to explore and explain the present dangers of this apparent easy option of copying verbatim subject

matter from the internet. It appeals to our laziness, but it must be realised first that everything on the net belongs to somebody else. Some years ago there was an Amerindian art exhibition that donned the first page of the Sunday newspapers, I can’t remember which papers, but all of the pieces were taken from the internet-Instagram posts of a photographer on Pinterest. Neither the Newspapers nor the Toshao of the area could have identified the origins of the models. It would have been very embarrassing should the pieces be elevated to an exhibition that embodied national sensibilities. As I’ve often said, the arts, like any serious discipline, cannot be bluffed, you either know or you don’t.

Nation-building is a work of art. It isn’t surprising that all the revolutionary nations that rejected its previous horrid histories, well, the old folklore and age-old legends of its peasantry, are today coming to grips with the global appetite for diverse entertainment and are making efforts to tap into the market even reclaiming like the East Europeans did with the fall of the ‘Iron Curtain’ to own Vlad Dracula.

As I emphasise, the work of art that constitutes nation-building cannot be attributed to the interpretation of foreigners or lazily adopted. It’s a difficult creative duty for beings and creatures of the soil.

Ann-Marie awoke early the next morning before the mist had cleared from the mountain tops. She stepped outside, her bare feet kissed by the morning dew on the grass and she inhaled deeply, the cool fresh air.

“Such a blessing!” she expressed quietly, her hand touching her abdomen lovingly.

“She will be the princess of El Dorado,” she had told David as they had prepared to return.

He had looked at her somewhat surprised, “The mythical El Dorado?”

“Well it’s a popular story that started since a long time so we can own it,” she had

smiled with pride.

El Dorado, the City of Gold searched for by explorers but never found and it became a myth to the outside world, a legacy for the Indigenous peoples.

As a young girl she had been fascinated by the story, but as she grew older, her interest faded for it seemed unlikely El Dorado ever existed until one day she stumbled upon something deep in the rainforest where no one had ever walked before. It was as though a door had opened to let her in and she had stood there in awe looking around at the flowing streams, rare flowers and exotic birds. What took her breath was the gold sparkling all around.

“Could it be…?” she wondered, unable to believe

it actually was.

She had walked to the stream and scooped up water with both hands, watching in disbelief as the water trickled through her fingers, leaving small gold particles on her hands.

A deep thrill passed through her body and she stood there rooted for a long moment.

“No one has ever found this place. Why me?”

“Because you are a chosen daughter of our people,” a low voice had said from somewhere, “This is now your secret, that you will pass onto your daughter.”

The shop has two sections, a grocery and a hardware store which is her husband’s small business, while she has the grocery shop but when he is at work she manages both.

She has been in the community for the past nine years and decided to start a small business while being at home.

Jones is the wife of a policeman and on Sundays they would go on family outings thus, closing the business that day.

“Life here is quiet and peaceful and I like it here because the people in the community supports the business and we live nice,” she said.

Her house is located at the edge of the street and it

is an ideal spot for a corner shop and hardware store.

Jones stated that potable water is yet to be delivered to the village and it is essential because they have to buy drinking water which is costly and they had preferred water over roads.

The Enabler This individual is usually the spouse or eldest child of an addict. They pick up the slack and do all the tasks that the addict can no longer do.

They become the breadwinner, do the housework, and take care of other family members -- pretty much everything. They provide the time and money the addict needs to obtain the drug.

Most importantly, they make excuses for the addict, especially in social situations.

This, while helpful and kind to the others, has the opposite effect on the addict. An addict is much less likely to seek treatment if they have an enabler in his/her life.

Do you recognise any of these roles? Have you adopted them?

How does substance use affect children?

Children are particularly affected by substance abuse within a home. Children raised by a substance abuser are basically being raised by a single parent. The non-using parent (if there even is one) often has to do all the cooking, cleaning, school work, and make the financial living for the family. The children tend to grow up in a home without structure or order.

A child of an addict is more likely to have issues socialising, have issues at school, problems with the law and is more vulnerable to general issues of mental health (any type).

Addicts are particularly violent and may be so to their children, starting a cycle of abuse. Please remember that children who are abused (physically, emotionally or sexually) are more likely to abuse their spouses and their own children. Children of addicts are more likely to drop out of school than children of non-addicts. Children of addicts are more likely to become addicts themselves, especially alcoholics. Children of alcoholics are four times more likely to develop alcoholism. If the addict is using illicit substances, children are unfairly exposed to illegal activities.

Being raised by an addict and experiencing all of the above result in low self-confidence and self-esteem, loneliness, guilt, anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. It results in a fear of abandonment and

a lack of respect for the parents; the one for using and the other for staying. Very often, because of parental drug abuse, children are raised by extended family such as grandparents.

How does substance use affect a spouse/partner?

It is very difficult to live with someone who often uses alcohol/ drugs. As mentioned, it causes a multitude of issues such as fear, lack of trust or resentment. The non-using partner often starts to doubt and even blame themselves for their partner’s use. They habitually believe that they are unloved as if their partner loved them, they would stop using. They feel guilty for not leaving the situation but instead exposing their children to it. They feel sad, angry and embarrassed; they feel helpless and hopeless.

The lack of trust stems from the persistent lying and stealing done by the drug user. They often lie about their use or where they have been. Often, the non-using partner has to hide valuables as the user steals in order to fund their habit. Sadly, the closest things available go first which means they begin to steal from their families before anyone else.

One using partner also increases the possibility of two using partners. This situation is harder on both partners as well as children.

That household would be very dysfunctional and children would be particularly neglected. When both partners are users, there is a less chance of divorce, but a high rate of enabling and co-dependency. This means they feed off each other’s habits and unknowingly encourage each other to keep using.

How does substance use affect parents?

I am not yet a parent, but the popular consensus is that you will never love another human being the way you love your child. This obviously means that you want nothing but the best for them; that their pain is your pain. It is incredibly difficult to watch your child struggle -- in any capacity.

A child’s drug use causes a lot of issues between the parents. They begin to neglect each other and spend most of their energy and resources on the child. Some even have to stop working due to the guilt, stress, anxiety and depression that the situation may cause. Many arguments happen due to

a difference of opinion of how to handle the situation.

Everyone has different opinions which usually becomes hard to respect when in difficult situations. Many parents blame each other and tend to separate or get divorced over hardships caused by children.

If you are a family member/friend of an addict, the most important thing to remember is that it is not your fault, even if they say that it is. It is a very common characteristic of an addict to blame any and everyone else for their habit. Sadly, there isn’t much you can do either.

An addict needs to want to get help. The only thing you can do is keep educated on the pattern so you can pass on information -- both to the addict and anyone else in the family. Try not to be an enabler. Seek help for yourself.

There are Al-Anon meetings available in Guyana.

These are specific support groups for the family and friends of substance abusers.

Keep in mind that there are ways to educate your partner on the harms of addiction as well as encourage them to seek help. With the whole family involved, it usually starts with an intervention. In the meantime, if you have someone close to you who is an addict, spend the next week researching all you can about addiction, their specific drug of choice and the harms it does to the mind and body. You will need that to be able to conduct an intervention.

Those heading the committee are convinced that developing tourism is the way to go when it comes to preserving traditional knowledge, complementing residents’ livelihoods, and showcasing the beautiful features and attractions that are present in the villages across Region One. Although the core body of the committee has been established, it is still in the process of getting fully organised and functional.

The 27-year-old moved back to Santa Rosa Village after completing school in Essequibo and doing a couple of jobs in Mahdia and Georgetown. But he’s settled in Moruca now, especially as he appreciates the low crime rate there, along with the peace and quiet.

According to him, the main goal of the tourism committee is to explore opportunities that can assist in strengthening the livelihoods of residents while preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the village. In doing this, many elderly ones are being engaged with so that their knowledge can be well documented for historical purposes.

“Because we have a big village, we have to do assessments in 12 different areas to find out what type of natural features and attractions are available there that could complement our tourism package. We’re moving slowly because of COVID, but we’re visiting areas, taking pictures and talking to residents,” Marcus explained.

Persons in the village are available and ready to be service providers as soon as the package becomes a reality. “We have a lot of work to do. It takes a lot of time, dedication and sacrifice to move between the areas. Transportation is a major challenge, along with getting the necessary equipment to use. We don’t have such equipment, so we basically have to use our personal stuff at the moment,” he related.

M a rc u s a l s o s p o k e about the importance of residents getting more training in tourism. He is especially grateful for the quality-service training that was done recently which saw 12 villagers benefitting, and is looking forward to November, that month being Tourism Month.

Marcus is currently using his time to develop projects that will raise awareness about tourism in his village. He also works in capacity building for the Moruca District Council, which is made up of toshaos from all the villages in the sub-region. “I want to see things working out in the village. I want to see things streamlined and functioning; that the village has everything sorted out.”

Apart from this, he loves to explore the village. “I do mountain biking which is something that I really enjoy. It’s very exciting, very adventurous. We went to check potential bike trails recently for tourism within the village. The roads need some work but it was really fun,” he shared.

While the village can be explored by boat, many places can also be reached through roads.

I am in love …

We are always discussing what we can continue to do to empower the youth. We are celebrating Amerindian (Indigenous) Heritage Month and we decided that a tie-dye session can be beneficial.

This was the highlight of my trip and seeing the reactions from the young ladies was worth the rough road travelling here, lol is meet-

ing some of my favourite young people from Fairview Heritage Month, Dr. Raquel Thomas, who is a director at Iwokramma said, “Iwokrama collaborated with the Sonia Noel Foundation to engage the young women in a tie-dye workshop. The premise of this idea is about sustainability. Clothes waste is becoming a major polluter globally, but yet many clothes that are thrown out

are functionally good to wear. Revitalising clothes can be done by using techniques such as tie-dying.”

Surita Marslowe is a young lady who has the potential to be a phenomenal leader in her community and she expressed how she started the programme. “This session was helpful because it is great learning different stuff. Learning to dye and recycle clothing was not only fun, but it was also

meaningful. It is useful for these young women to do something useful for their communities. We also saw the possibility of a viable business. where we can help or make a little business.”

The Rupununi convinced me again that nature is the best medicine and I encourage you to explore as we continue to celebrate this beautiful journey called life.

Life in the hilltop...

And he was planting there three years ago and it motivated him to re-start farming there once again and he will expand to some cash crops, but needs a little help in clearing the land and getting his documentation in order.

Moore describes life in the hilltop village as good, because the place is breezy, quiet and the people mind their own business and things are just nice the way it is.

The housewife Shellon Seales lives in the very first house in Prosville Village and she is a stay-athome mother of three.

She has been living in the village for the past seven years and is originally from Coomacka Mines and came to that community for a better life.

The 29-year-old said the place is nice, except she became spooked when someone tried to break into her house recently one night, but she yelled for help and that person ran away and did not get

to enter her home.

She stated that a few nights ago, someone broke into her friend’s house nearby and it is suspected that that same person could be breaking into other homes in the area in recent times.

Seales added that other than that, she is happy in Prosville and with potable water supply, her life will be enhanced.

She reported that her husband is a logger and she is not afraid because her neighbours are good people and they look out for each other and all is well.

Prosville...

Prosville is between One Mile and Wisroc villages and it is accessed from the Mabura/Kurupukari/Lethem trail.

It is the last village before the trail and it is the home of the food seasoning, fine leaf thyme, which is also used to make tea to get rid of impurities from the body and add flavour to the pot.

Fine leaf thyme can be found almost everywhere in this village and it is plentiful, growing on street corners and yards.

Prosville doesn’t have

any government facilities, including schools, health centres or any other;those are accessed in nearby villages.

The village has a few shops, and essentials can be sourced within the community.

It is a peaceful, quiet neighbourhood where the people are friendly and respectful and are not nosey.

P ro s v i l l e h a s s o m e lovely little houses which look as if they are right out of a magazine, so picture-perfect and colourful, while there are other large houses, mostly flat concrete houses brightly painted and

gated.

The village has many cul-de-sacs and dead ends and the streets are one-vehicle and go throughout the community, which is mostly uphill, high, and then one has to go downhill when they want to visit Andyville via a steep descent.

The people of Prosville are homemakers, self-employed folk, skilled workers, and those outside the village in both the public and private sectors.

Prosville was established more than 10 years ago and it is still developing.

The Village Leader Monica Moore, called Stacy, is the known village leader who has been residing in the community for the past seven years.

The mother of four reported that she moved to Prosville after clearing the land abruptly because of family issues and constructed a little house out of sawmill waste wood (slabs) and lived in it for five years before she was able to build a better home.

Moore told the Pepperpot Magazine that she would clear land for a living; using a power saw, she and her husband would take on the task.

“We heard about squatting in the village from my brother whose plot we resided on and began living there

since we had nowhere else to go,” she said.

Moore explained that her brother, who resides overseas, had the plot and he returned to Guyana and decided to give them the land since he had no desire to live here anymore.

The 49-year-old stated that they were the first settlers in terms of a family because a few others were living there, but not with families.

Moore disclosed that she heard of a meeting in the nearby village, Andyville, and she showed up and was told by regional officials that they need to form a group to get titles for the lands they are occupying and a Community Development Council (CDC) was formed in 2016.

She was elected

vice-chairman of the CDC and was instrumental in mobilising the people for the cause.

Moore added that after the CDC was in place, things started to happen for them and the folk from Lands and Surveys came in and marked off the lots by boundaries after a month of surveys.

Prosville was regularised in 2018 and infrastructural development began in that community and more people moved in and began occupancy of empty houses.

The village benefitted from electricity in 2019 and the people were thankful.

“This is a nice place to live, it is quiet and we don’t have no problems with people and everybody do what they have to earn,” she said.

WORLD HABITAT DAY

WORLD Habitat Day is celebrated on the first Monday in October, annually. The day is recognised by the United Nations to reflect on the state or condition of towns and cities and promote the basic right to adequate shelter or housing for all. High population density, coupled with poor building techniques, results only in a chaotic situation and enormous loss of lives.

World Habitat Day aims to remind people across the world that they have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of towns and cities. The basic idea is to remind the world of the effects of urbanisation and its collective responsibility for the future of human habitat.

For this year’s celebration on October 4, the United Nations General Assembly will continue focusing on our habitat with the theme, “Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world.” This focus is timely, given the rapid increase in urban cities. Attention must also be given to the rise in slums often found on the outskirts

of these urban cities. In comparison to the cities, basic necessities such as housing, shelter, potable water and food, etc., are non-existent in these slums. Moreover, in this new paradigm of COVID-19, the living standards are seen as even more deplorable, with limited access to health care and even basic medical drugs. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on these communities cannot be fully comprehended.

CHILD abuse has been one of those topics that I have shied away from over the years. I have personally felt uncomfortable writing about something that has been so normalised while I was growing up.

Phrases like “when yuh don’t hear, you does feel” and “spare the rod, spoil the child” are not unfamiliar to me or many (if not all) of my relatives, friends, and neighbours. It was not abuse, it was sim-

ply being disciplined-or so we thought.

To illustrate what I mean about child abuse being normalised, I thought about how problematic it is that my first reaction after reading a recent report containing child abuse statistics was ‘I’m sure the amount of abuse is much, much greater,’ instead of being instantly appalled. What I read was an address by Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Per-

saud, who stated that there were nearly 2,000 reported cases of child abuse in only the first six months of the year.

In retrospect I find that very problematic, because it illustrates how normalised child abuse is, or, at least how normalised it is to me. Let me, however, hasten to add that I do not blame our parents, grandparents, or any of our fore-parents for perpetuating the cycle of abuse and

even obscuring it as discipline. While I believe that we are all individuals who possess human agency, I also believe that violence in our society is more of a systemic issue. That,

therefore, means that I believe that child abuse is a deeper problem than a parent wanting a child to be obedient and well-disciplined.

In the United States, for example, research from the American Psychological Association has linked corporal punishment in African-American communities to racial trauma. In a 2017 article written by Dr. Stacey Patton, it is argued that once in America, parents who were enslaved were pressured into shaping their children into docile field workers and to teach them proper deference and demeanour in front of whites-so that they could remain unharmed.

“Child deaths, brutal whippings and torture, sexual abuse, and being sold away from their relative for the rest of their lives were constant features of plantation life,” she highlighted.

Later, she added: “... when you belong to a group of people who are in constant fear of their lives and those of their children, then it is understandable how that trauma can cause parents to interpret cruelty as love, protection, and responsible parenting, even when proven counterintuitive.”

I cannot say for sure whether that reality in the U.S. is exactly applicable to us in Guyana, but in the local context, I invite you to think about our existing 1876 Education Act that was last amended in 1976. Section 94(1) of this Act says: “For serious or repeated offences, corporal punishment may be administered by the headteacher or by an assistant teacher over 20 years of age and authorised by him.”

The existing Education Act provides for corporal punishment and one can even argue that the Act could be microcosmic of how permissible and entrenched this form of abuse, proffered as discipline, has been - at least when the Act was crafted and throughout its lifetime.

In all fairness, though, relatively recent efforts have been made to change this. A few years ago, the Ministry of Education introduced a policy that prohibits using this form of punishment as a disciplinary method when dealing with children in schools.

Additionally, the 2014 Education Bill- which was not passed but is expected to be tabled again this year and could replace the existing Education Act- has dropped corporal punishment as a method of discipline. And, in June 2018, Guyana enacted the Juvenile Justice Act 2018 to prohibit all corporal punishment of children in penal institutions and as a sentence for a crime.

Still, there is a need to change hearts and minds with these legislative amendments (or planned legislative amendments). Just a cursory look at social media is needed whenever children’s corporal punishment is the ‘hot topic’; I guarantee that there will be raging debates for and against this punishment.

I believe, however, that we have to be able to honestly interrogate how problematic corporal punishment is and think about how we conceptualise child abuse- including the physical, verbal, sexual, and emotional spheres.

Even though lashing out might feel like the most appropriate or familiar thing to do, there are other ways of engaging children or sanctioning them that can, perhaps, be just as effective. Alternatives to corporal punishment include placing a child in a ‘time-out’ or letting the child lose privileges to something valuable, such as an electronic device (phone or tablet, for example).

These two can, however, be perceived as acts of punishment. As such, research shows that employing empathy towards a child’s feelings, recognising and as much as reasonably possible meeting the child’s needs, and calmly trying to resolve situations are good alternatives to punishing a child.

The aging mouth BEFORE the advent of the SARS Cov 2 pandemic in November 2019, it was an established fact that was confirmed by numerous international reports that there is a global trend of increased longevity among the elderly, especially in developed and developing countries. It, therefore, seems logical to assume that dentists will go on enriching the quality of the patients’ lives via traditional techniques of prosthetic rehabilitation. However, population groups exist who simply cannot benefit from current treatment techniques.

A significant number of elderly patients are already without natural teeth and wear complete dentures with different degrees of success. Many elderly patients are edentulous (missing teeth) and may not be able to avail themselves of methods for the retention of their remaining teeth. Clinical

wisdom would suggest immediate denture therapy for such patients, particularly if advanced gum disease is present.

For persons who have lost most of their teeth to obtain this satisfaction with dentures, it is important that the remaining teeth be preserved, no matter in what condition the crown may be. These teeth, if strategically located, may be retained and prepared for abutment service as adjunctive means of support under partial or complete overdentures.

When correctly applied, the mechanical principles of partial or complete dentures treatment are purported to virtually guarantee a happy coexistence between dentures and their host tissues. As a result, dentists have remarkably and successfully convinced themselves, if not always their patients, that technically well-made removable dentures can be worn satisfactorily and perhaps even indefinitely.

According to reports, evidence reveals that while it is difficult to define denture satisfaction, a significant number of patients in all age groups are dissatisfied with their dentures.

Furthermore, many elderly patients experience difficulty in attaining comfortable and efficient oral function with removable dentures.

The important relationship between adequate oral function and proper digestion and nutrition is well documented. Since the greater the life expectancy of toothless patients is likely

to go on increasing, the risk of denture dissatisfaction and its functional implications can only be prolonged. This risk is particularly compelling in the context of denture- supporting tissues’ vulnerability to adverse changes as a result of longterm denture wear.

There seems to be the tendency for the all-or-none rule where retaining teeth are concerned. It is commonly believed that it is better to extract all one’s teeth and wear total dentures, rather than keeping a few and wearing a partial one; well, that belief may have been justified 20 years ago, but

today dentists utilise any few remaining the potential the satisfaction for the patient.

Modern dentistry has made sure that elderly patients with no teeth are by no means in an irremediable situation, no matter how hopeless their condition might appear. Various techniques exist, albeit somewhat inaccessible to the average person who can significantly take care of seemingly impossible circumstances.
