Showcasing stories of Guyana’s people and culture The face behind the Pepperpot Magazine

By Naomi Parris EVERY week, the Guyana Chronicle produces a Sunday magazine filled with exhilarating features and articulate storytelling.

Whether it be a piece from a columnist or a feature writer, this supplement, the Pepperpot Magazine, is one of Guyana’s main avenues of telling stories from the people’s perspective. However, what we don’t often get to explore are the faces behind the magazine and its production.

This week the editor of the magazine, Jasmaine Payne, shared her journey on becoming a professional writer and editor and the importance of telling those stories to the public.

In an interview, Payne disclosed that her writing career began in print media in 2010 at Guyana Times; then she later went into writing as a freelancer, working for a number of magazines and local newspapers.

“I have been writing pro-

fessionally since 2010- so about 11 years to be exact.

I [also focused on] creative writing. I entered a couple of competitions- the Guyana Annual, the Commonwealth prize. Then I just felt like I wanted to be able to earn off of the craft and I decided to look into professional writing,” she said.

On the academic front, Payne then decided to align her studies with her professional interests. In 2017,Payne gained her Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of London and most recently an MBA in Marketing from the University of Bedfordshire.

“I got my bachelor’s degree in English and I realised that it was a lucrative business in Guyana. There was a lack of professionally trained writers. I did some editing courses and I got my degree and I have been writing professionally since,” she said.

Appreciation for the language Not being a fan of the physical classroom, Payne

attended university virtually while freelancing. She noted that being able to work and study on her own terms provided new insight into being disciplined. Additionally, she explained that her studies of the English Language widened her knowledge and love for the art of storytelling.

“When you study linguistics and the history of language, you realise that is really not just something that you grow up learning to speak- it’s really a science,” she said, lamenting: “I gained an extra respect for the English Language and value for the way that we used it through those studies and at the end of four years ... my passion for writing and editing just really peaked. And I knew that I wanted to align my career around that path,” she said.

Meanwhile, Payne explained that her decision to pursue studies in marketing coincided with her goals, because Marketing encompasses public relations and

communications – both of which incorporate aspects of writing which she enjoys.

The importance of storytelling Speaking about her work with the Pepperpot Magazine, Payne described her position as editor of the magazine as one that is unique and fulfilling.

“Feature writing is both a pleasure and hard work at the same time. For one, Guyana has a unique culture, very colourful, very dynamic, so when I speak with writers and I try to help them get stories or receive stories from them, it’s

really a wide range you’re getting…and I enjoy the storytelling. I enjoy facilitating storytelling for the public because we do have a lot of interesting aspects of our culture that not a lot of people know about,” she said.

She added that sharing the stories of the Guyanese people and their unique ways of life has been a gratifying experience and a big part of her journey as a writer.

“It’s only when you see the responses via social media or for example when the reporters themselves go back into the communities

and they get feedback…it’s really fulfilling to know that the work that you are doing, people are paying attention and they are appreciating,” Payne said.

Sharing some advice to writers, Payne highlighted that there are many layers and aspects to writing and that being called a writer goes beyond just the creative aspects. She encouraged budding writers to explore other types of writing if they are interested in making a career of it locally, as many other areas of the craft can provide that opportunity.

The Venezuelan Sword of Damocles

By Francis Quamina Farrier IT has been over half a century since Guyana’s Spanish-speaking neighbour to the west, Venezuela, has laid claim to more than half of Guyana’s 83,000 square miles of sovereign territory. To Guyana and the rest of the world, it is a ridiculous claim and for that period of time, Guyana has refuted that claim, pointing out that the issue was settled (once and for all) in 1899.

However, for over a century and a half, Venezuela has held that non-issue like the proverbial sword of Damocles over a peaceful country, Guyana. As Guyana’s celebrated singer/songwriter Dave Martins states in his song, “Not a Blade of Grass,” “We ain’t giving up no mountain, we ain’t giving up no tree, we ain’t giving up no river, that belong to we.” The Guyanese people with all their many disagreements and with many other national issues that they mutually agree to fight and squabble over, remain united and resolute with this issue which Venezuela continues to keep alive.

More recently, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, wrote a long paper of that on-going issue, which is creating a measure of distraction from Guyana’s many national projects and objectives. “Venezuela’s attempt to claim for itself the seas and seabed adjacent to the coast west of the Essequibo River, is another legal nullity, which will receive no legal regard from any other state in the world, including Guyana,” Dr. Griffith points out. While most countries are supportive of Guyana, this land claim by Venezuela continues to be promoted by that country in many ways. For example, there is a large map of Venezuela and Guyana at the baggage-claim area of the Caracas International Airport showing the area of Guyana west of the Essequibo River, shaded; the area claimed by Venezuela.

As such, that is seen by all arriving passengers who have luggage to claim at the baggage-claim area, myself included, when I passed through that airport on a few occasions.

That map on the wall sends more than just a subliminal message. It is more or less the symbol of a cold war of sorts between the two neighbouring South American nations. Looking at that map could be irritating for patriotic Guyanese, but there is little they can do about the situation while waiting to collect their luggage, but to grin and bear.

As recent as January 7, 2021, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro launched a series of sabre-rattling measures against its peaceful neighbour, Guyana. He issued a Decree - No. 4.415 - which claims exclusive rights in the waters and seabed extending 200 nautical miles off the Orinoco Delta.

The decree created a strategic zone, the territory for the Development of the Atlantic Facade that abuts Guyana’s maritime space, northwest of the Essequibo River, where several oil fields have been discovered - including the Atlantic facade of the Orinoco Delta up to 200 nautical miles.

That was the mindset of President Maduro when establishing the zone. That move, however, has devel-

oped into part of the battery of legal, diplomatic, political and state actions, “...to defend our sacred rights of 200 years of our republic.” Maduro stated.

The decree provides for a single board of directors - comprising representatives from the seven vice-presidents, the armed forces, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - to manage all aspects of the strategic area, including revenue, taxes, and imports facilities. Understandably, “Guyana has rejected this attempt to encroach upon its territory and petroleum resources.”

Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali stated in a special address to the nation on January 9, 2021.

There is an irony to this ongoing relationship between Guyana and Venezuela. For at least two decades, Guyana has hosted many Venezuelans-many of them arriving in the country illegally and

as exiles-especially in the northwest area of the country, Region One. Many Venezuelans can also be seen in and around Georgetown. In more recent years - especially since Venezuela has been experiencing deep economic issues - more Venezuelans have gone into self-exile in neighbouring Guyana, Colombia and others. Their once “Oil-Rich country” is now experiencing serious economic issues. There are stories coming out of the country of citizens who are starving, and living well below the poverty line.

Almost an entire century and a quarter have gone by since the official settlement of the Guyana/ Venezuela border issue.

However, like the proverbial sword of Damocles, it continues to hang over our Beautiful Land of Guyana.

Just when will that ‘sword’ be removed by Venezuela, only time will tell, as diplomats work quietly behind the scenes to bring it to a peaceful and amicable end.

A look at Guyana’s credit bureau

By Dillon Goring AN information and decision solutions company that helps lenders and businesses make better-informed decisions in the entire credit life cycle for individuals and companies, and with financial inclusion as a vision.

These tenets form a major part of the mandate of Credit Info Guyana, a credit bureau that was established in November 2012. The company was granted a licence to operate in July 2013 under the Credit Reporting Act No. 9 of 2010 Credit Reporting Amendment Act 2016.

Its subscribers include all financial institutions, all utilities, hire-purchase companies, trade creditors and similar institutions.

The Pepperpot Magazine spoke with Chief Executive Officer of the credit bureau, Judy Joseph, who explained the purpose and vision of the company and what it means to the ordinary Guyanese.

Joseph explained that the purpose of the credit bureau is to facilitate access to finances.

“Our mission is to allow access that will give lenders confidence of identifying good borrowers who have a high propensity to repay,” Joseph told the Pepperpot Magazine.

She further explained that a good credit profile assures the lender that you have a good reputation.

Benefits One can have easy access to the bank through a great credit score, particularly when they are embarking on building a house, taking care of children’s tuition fees and the like, Joseph was careful to explain.

During her interview, she noted that the bureau has made it easy for persons to access their credit report online.

her, a good credit report enables faster loan approval for loan agencies, particularly the banks.

Plans Joseph is of the view that the credit bureau is about sharing information about how the credit bureau supports national development, development of the financial sector, all aimed at improving lives.

Significantly, over the years according to Joseph, the bureau is now in a position to provide analytics that lenders can use in the advancement of the various sectors.

This allows identifying the growth in various sectors.

The credit bureau ultimately hopes that lenders can see how the bureau can help them, by enhancing the profitability of their businesses.

BENEFITS OF

CREDIT SCORE TO CONSUMERS Credit Score according to information provided by the bureau, provides financial identity, enables the development of a credit

history, access to all goods and services needed e.g. home ownership, education, access to credit or financial products that can improve lives, elimination of manual bias or human error in credit decisions, increased choice

of borrowing and reduced cost of credit.

For businesses, credit scores provide increased access to finance; reduced cost of borrowing; better risk management i.e. better prediction of risk of delinquencies and losses; underwriting decisions, fraud reduction, more efficient competition among lenders, access to a wider pool of potential customers, availability of financial resources for entrepreneurial activity improved and profitability enhanced business opportunities.

Creditinfo, which is a global company represented in 24 markets, was granted the licence in 2013 to operate Guyana’s first credit bureau to deepen the financial sector through the establishment of a credit-reporting industry.

The establishment of a credit-reporting industry in Guyana was carefully considered to make it easier for both borrowers and lenders in dealing with the issue of inadequate access to finance and the inefficiencies which existed in the credit-granting process. According to the World Bank’s guidelines for the industry (to which Creditinfo subscribes), in markets

rates, customised products and services, enhanced competition in the credit market, and ultimately increased access to credit.’

Wide-ranging credit reporting provided by credit bureaus across the globe provides benefits to populations by facilitating access to credit and financial services, especially for traditionally underserved populations.

According to the World Bank 2012 statistics, at the time of the establishment of Guyana’s credit bureau, globally half of the world’s working-age population was unbanked with 39 per cent in Latin America and the Caribbean and approximately 65 per cent in Guyana.

Providing access to free credit reports is considered one of the company’s first steps towards financial inclusion, as this allows consumers to understand their credit profile and its link to accessing credit. Utilising the information therein contained enables citizens to make sound decisions for their own economic benefit.

For consumers, credit scoring holds the key to homeownership and consumer credit and hence the credit report as a tool can be used

Therefore, enabling or improving the flow of credit-related information as well as other relevant financial information on SMEs can contribute to alleviating financial constraints SMEs often face. This is a simple-to-use and transparent process for SMEs to provide sufficient data to enable their credit-risk assessment and for potential lenders to SMEs to access such data and conduct risk assessments.

These initiatives are expected to support increased formal access to financing for SMEs through bank lending and trade credit, thus contributing to the positive development of the econ-

Old England Village A scenic wonder, nature at its best

By Michel Outridge THIS week the Pepperpot Magazine journeyed to Old England (Siberian) in Linden, Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Berbice) to highlight the way of life of the people and to feature the village.

OLD England is a very picturesque place like most villages in Linden, which is against the backdrop of the

Demerara River which sits in their backyards and the trail to the interior (Ituni and Kwakwani) runs through that village as well.

It has huge sandhills, a natural spring where drinking-water is sourced by villagers and many blue lakes and creeks too.

Old England has the highest point in the region, where some locals are farming and there is an airstrip atop a

steep hill which overlooks the village.

The trail is better than most roads in the city, even though it had rained a lot that day and the people are very welcoming and very hospitable.

Old England has many roadside shops which the locals support, but bulk shopping is usually done in Linden and they have a few minibuses that ply that route for $300

The community has no schools, but a health post which sits comfortably on a hill just by a turn and there is the ICT hub building which was a community project, built by the people and is yet to be equipped with computers and internet.

Old England has a block-making facility and the people are of mixed ethnicities and it is an eerily quiet and peaceful place.

The community has a ballfield which needs a pavilion for the many sports activities that take place there.

Old England Village has many houses with a population of about 400 residents, who are scattered over the vast landmass which is bordered by hills and the Demerara River.

Some sections of the village have electricity,but

potable water is yet to flow from the taps of the pipelines, although there are distribution lines and there is no landline service, just cellphone and a few persons have cable television.

Most people earn from small-scale farming of ground provisions, fruits and cash crops, while others have small businesses and some men work in the interior.

And there are also skilled masons, carpenters and contractors and equally qualified professionals, who would leave the village for work daily.

Old England Village is between Nottinghamshire and Coomacka and the many truckers, miners and others, who pass through the community would make purchases at the shops.

The people seem happy but crave development;

however, they appreciate the development they have seen over the years.

The village has a church and more new people have moved into the village and have constructed houses and settled there.

It looks like living in nature at its best and there is a wide variety of foliage, greenery and plants that are a part of the landscape, which also grows on the hills.

It is indeed a very beautiful place and the people are cooperating to develop the village through the Community Development Council (CDC).

Most residents have lived all their lives in that village and have no desire to relocate and one can see why, it is such a lovely place to reside.

From bright lights to scenic sights

By Michel Outridge STEVE Richmond once lived his life in the bright lights and had a busy lifestyle, but then exchanged all of that for the scenic, quiet Old England Village where he has settled with his family.

The retired artiste once toured with the Cannon Balls group. He told the Pepperpot Magazine that his singing

The father of seven added that at age 18, he was diagnosed with glaucoma and has lost 98 percent of his sight in both eyes, so he spends his days farming and doing other things in and around the house.

Richmond stated that Old England Village is a place that is like living in the outdoors, in nature with the backdrop of the Demerara River, blue lakes, sandhills and a lot of greenery.

He worked in the bauxite industry at Three Friends Village for many years and he became familiar with the area.

The 58-year-old reported that he is supported by his wife, Tiffany Rudder, who sang with the New Invention Band in 1988, but these days she is just singing for the church, the only church in the community, the Ad-

He explained that things are a bit stagnant and with the pandemic, it is not better, but the people are defying the odds and are doing things to make an honest dollar and with sports, the youths can have something meaningful in which to participate.

An overseas-based Guyanese from that village who is here on holiday, Nigel John, told the Pepperpot Magazine that he would return home annually to contribute to the community and he was doing just that when the team met him.

He was lending a helping hand to build a shop for his fellow villagers and would donate sports gear to the football and cricket teams and do whatever is needed to encourage the youths to spend their time in an engaging manner, instead of being idle.

The team also met yet another Nigel- this time it is Nigel Fariha, 55, also a resident and farmer, who enjoys the peace and quiet of Old England Village.

and ground provisions and is involved in subsistence farming because he doesn’t have a regular market for his produce.

He is originally from the city, but has relocated since 2000 and reported that back then the place wasn’t so developed as it is today.

The father of two stated that he is a contractor, who would get small contracts and is trying with that to earn.

“This place is amazing,

the scene, that is, but work is slow and not readily available; but I have been getting very small contracts, nothing big yet, so I am holding on and I am also farming, so I am of the hope that things will work in my favour,” he said.

His children were seen swimming in the cool, dark fresh water of the Demerara River and they too seem contented with the quiet atmosphere.

Old England CDC geared towards fostering community development

Being at the helm of community development is not an easy task, but she has the support of the villagers, most of whom are part of the CDC. Fredericks told the Pepperpot Magazine that the village is on the move and they welcome development in any form and over the years, they have partnered with non-governmental organisations as well as both the past and present administrations to equip the community with certain facilities to promote

Serving the community is necessary for development

By Michel Outridge AS the elder of the Shekinah Church of Old England Village, Ruby Bakker is a mentor, a friend and a leader in the community, who is respected and looked upon to make important decisions.

As a retired school teacher, she is well-known and well-liked as well, and at age 72, she still has the drive and energy of a teenager.

Bakker told the Pepperpot Magazine that she used to reside in Coomacka and after marriage she moved to

transportation as a way of giving back to the village,” she said.

She reported that the only mode of transportation was by train and today some of the tracks are still there; pieces and remnants of the past still linger in the village, reminding the people of the once thriving bauxite

industry.

Bakker said when she moved there it was difficult to get around and they depended on the “Pullman’ to get to the main road, as passengers and the bauxite operations were at Three Friends, farther away from Old England.

The people of Old...

The yard space is large and there are a few pear trees that line the walkway, among other plants.

“This place is soothing, it makes you feel new again and I feel like a thousand pounds was lifted off my shoulders by coming here

and spending a few weeks,” he said.

The poultry farmer Just up the road, is the home of Calxta Reberia and her family; they have a nice house which is on a large plot of land which is secured by a fence.

The 43-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that she had a poultry business with some meat birds, but lost them all when the place was flooded.

The Riberia family also grow their own food and

have utilised the yard space to plant bananas, plantains, bora, coconuts and ochroes, among other crops.

She is one of the locals who has lived their entire life in the village and has no plans to relocate because she likes the quiet and peace of the village.

“Life is not a rush here, we enjoy a simple life in a nature-like setting and the biggest thing is the river in my backyard; it is the prettiest and most calming scene ever,” she said.

Riberia disclosed that

when the tide is high and it rains heavily, the water in the river would overtop and flood the yard and this would last for days and it would recede and it would start all over again whenever it rains.

“The best feature of the village is swimming in the cold, dark waters of the Demerara River, a sweet experience to have such a magnificent river right in your backyard,” she said.

lage is the home and business place of 26-year-old Ashmaley Richmond, who has a bar and is now setting up her food business.

She is a beneficiary of the HEYS project and with the loan she received, she started her dream of having her own small business, a bar and food business which is conveniently located by the roadside and accessible to people passing through.

Richmond added that Old England Village is a lovely place to reside; despite the

lack of job opportunities, the locals are finding things to do to earn and at the same time are utilising their talents.

“We have Hurricane Hill, the highest point in this region and if you look around you will see what I am talking about: the landscape is just so scenic and we are comfortable because this is home,” she said.

Richmond stated that Old England has many lakes, creeks and of course the Demerara River which runs through the village.

there is some development taking place to upgrade the housing sector.

Almost all government services are accessed in Linden and schools are in the neighbouring village of Coomacka, which is densely populated and is a developing community.

There is an air of calm in the atmosphere and it is one of those close-knit villages

where people do not lock their doors.

Old England Village is a place where houses line both sides of the trail which goes on for miles upon miles and it is almost picture-perfect in terms of the scenery.

It is one of those places you visit and know you would return to enjoy the peace, quiet and the beautiful scenery.

TOO YOUNG TO DIE PT. I

SHE opened her eyes and gasped as though suddenly awakening from a deep slumber.

It was dark and quiet, a chilling quietness that seemed not of this world. She sat up slowly, and whispered through icy breath, “Where am I?” The sounds of a crash and screams flashed in her mind and stepping down from where she had been lying, not feeling her feet on the floor, she looked around the cold, quiet chamber.

“What am I doing here?”

Icy fingers of fear gripped her when she realised she was in a place not of the living and she screamed.

“No, this can’t be, my mother is waiting for her medication, I’ve got to get to the drug store!”

She ran out of the cold chamber and stopped, for she was in a strange place, not on the road in her village. It was the hospital grounds and people passing could not hear nor see her. The reality hit her like a blast of colder air and she cried in her mind, “I died?”

She stood there feeling lost in that new world she was now in, not wanting to be there.

“I want to see my mother, please…let me go home.”

She closed her eyes, not sure who she was pleading to, but it seemed her plea was heard. She felt lifted by a sudden gust of wind, and when she opened her eyes,

she was at her small village on the West Coast.

It was late in the night so no one was in the streets, except a couple of drunks singing melodies of yesteryear as they stumbled home.

She stood deep in the shadows, her head bent, her long black hair partially covering her face. Her shoulders shuddered as though she was crying, then slowly she raised her head and pushed back the hair from her face. Her coal-black eyes held a deep sadness as she looked at the small wooden house farther down the street.

A single light shone through the window and slowly she walked to her home, not a lively young girl, but an unseen being.

Princess, her pet terrier sensing her presence jumped up barking and wagging her take excitedly.

Sandhya kneeled down and hugged her, grief in her heart.

“So sorry girl, I can’t be here with you like before, something bad happened.”

The dog looked at her with her soft brown eyes, wagging her tail as though she understood.

Sandhya walked up the short stairs into the house with Princess at her heels.

Her mother was lying on

the worn sofa crying quietly, grief etched on her face.

“Why my little girl?” she cried weakly.

“I am here, Ma,” Sandhya said, sitting beside her and touching her face, “I’m sorry I didn’t get your tablets.”

“If only I hadn’t sent her to the store with her bicycle,” she lamented.

“How can I tell you to stop crying, ma? What comforting words are there to ease your pain?”

The young girl felt helpless, for the burden of grief was so heavy.

She went to her young sister and brother’s room and watched them as they tossed and turned, restless in their sleep. As their big sister, though young herself, her hands they had held for support since their father died five years ago.

Whose hands would they now hold, for the mother would be facing a sterner battle for survival.

Sandhya had vowed to herself whilst working with her mother in their garden and selling greens and fruits in the market, to elevate her family’s lives. She would study hard at school to gain the high success that would guarantee her a good-paying job.

But fate took it all away.

She rode her bike that

fateful day to the drugstore, staying safely in the corner, when a reckless driver took the turn at breakneck speed, hitting her and dragging her with her bike a good way further.

A young life gone, her future plans torn and scattered on the road.

“What now?” she wondered.

The next morning as neighbours and families came to give her mother their sympathy, Sandhya listened to what they had to say about the accident that killed her.

The driver she heard, was put on a small bail and not charged for death by dangerous driving.

“That kind of thing happens when money talks,” one man said.

“And no justice for the poor,” said another.

‘Too young to die’ was most of the sentiments expressed on her tragic death.

And putting it all together, she concluded that the reckless driver should be made to pay.

Life was priceless but the plans she had for her family he should fund because he had taken her away from them.

A RIVER is a natural stream of flowing water with a significant volume of freshwater.

Rivers are found everywhere, on every land, and on every continent. They start from source or headwater areas such as springs, glaciers, and flow in meandering paths at different speeds. Finally, they discharge into a larger river, or lakes, or most likely, into oceans. Rivers are the main channels of the drainage system. Some rivers flow around the whole year, while some flow seasonally or when it is wet. It may cover much of a continent or flow just kilometres only.

Fresh, clean water is essential for humans and nature to survive. Rivers are precious sources of fresh drinking water for people across the world. When rivers are so badly polluted by industry or unevenly distributed by poor water-management practices, it can be a case of life or death. This unfortunately happens across the world.

Why are rivers important? * Nutrient cycling Rivers carry water and nutrients to areas all around the Earth, playing a crucial role in the water cycle and acting as drainage channels for surface water. * Habitats

Freshwater habitats account for some of the richest biodiversity in the world, and rivers are a vital, vibrant ecosystem for many species. THE IMPORTANCE OF ... * Energy Rivers are an important energy source. During the early industrial era, mills, shops, and factories were built near fast-flowing rivers where water could be used to power machines.

Today, steep rivers are still used to power hydroelectric plants and their water turbines.

Let’s explore Guyana’s rivers Guyana, meaning “land of many waters,” is rich in hydrologic resources. Let’s take a quick look at Guyana’s three main rivers.

The Essequibo River. River in east-central Guyana, the largest river between the Amazon and the Orinoco. It rises in the Acarai Mountains on the Brazilian border and flows northward

for approximately 630 miles (1,010 km) through savannahs and forests to the Atlantic Ocean.

It reaches the Atlantic Ocean 13 miles (21 km) west-northwest of Georgetown. Its estuary, 20 miles (32 km) wide, is obstructed by islands and silt. With its chief tributaries, the Rupununi, Mazaruni, and Cuyuni, its system drains more than half of Guyana.

The Berbice River. River in eastern Guyana. The Berbice River rises in the highlands of the Rupununi region and flows northward for 370 miles (595 km) through dense forests to the coastal plain. It enters the Atlantic Ocean at New Amsterdam, where its flow is obstructed by shallows. The basin of the Berbice River is restricted by the proximity of its larger neighbours, the Essequibo and Courantyne rivers, and its only tributary of consequence is the Canje. The river is navigable for 100 miles (160 km) by small vessels; many rapids lie farther upstream.

The Demerara River. River in eastern Guyana that rises in the forests of central Guyana and flows northward without important tributaries for 215 miles (346 km) to the Atlantic Ocean at Georgetown. Its narrow estuary and rapid flow keep clear a direct channel of 16–20 feet (5–6 m) to the ocean. Oceangoing steamers ascend 65 miles (105 km) to Linden for bauxite; smaller ships reach Malali, 25 miles (40 km) farther upstream; beyond lie numerous rapids.

Guyana’s waterways play a vital role in the Guyanese citizen’s day to day activities. As such the EPA makes it their duty to provide water-quality guidelines for any project that might pollute our waterways. The agency also conducts biannual and annual water-quality inspections on all projects that are approved by the agency.

Did you know? * The Essequibo River has a very rich fauna. More than 300 fish species are known from the Essequibo basin, including almost 60 endemic species. * The Pomeroon River is one of the deepest rivers in Guyana.

To a large extent, nevertheless, we’re still navigating the complexities of this pandemic and trying to manage ourselves better. Now, however, we’re also contending with the emergence of newer, modified forms of the virus -- the variants, or strains as they are commonly called. The scientific and medical communities expected these variants would arrive at some point or the other, since viruses do mutate.

The variants that have emerged so far — the United Kingdom(UK), Brazil, and South African variants — all have the ability to infect more persons. If we’re not careful, their increased transmissibility could lead to a sharp rise in our cases, additional deaths, and an overwhelmed healthcare system. Guyana has not been able to identify whether we do any of these variants without our borders. We have been sending a few COVID-19 samples to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for testing, but those few samples were not variants. That is not enough to rule out the possibility that we have variants.

On the other hand, we’ve been able to secure a number of the COVID-19 vaccines and we have been vaccinating our frontline healthcare workers. Soon, other frontline workers, the elderly, and persons with comorbidities (underlying and undetected health conditions, such as diabetes) will be vaccinated too. The importance of vaccines is that they allow the body to create an immune response to the virus, thereby fighting off infection. And Guyana, incredibly, has been able to secure several vaccines in a short period amid global concerns of vaccine nationalism, where larger, wealthier countries are hoarding these vaccines for themselves.

But, even so, vaccines are not necessarily the ‘magic bullet’ for the population and there are, understandably, many concerns. Due to the perceived short period during which the vaccines were developed and granted emergency-use authorisation, concerns about the long-term benefits and impact of the vaccines linger. Additionally, the efficacy of the vaccines on the variants is still evolving. In Guyana, these concerns may contribute to the vaccine-acceptance rates unless greater efforts are made (or continued) to promote greater education, communication, and trust.

Despite this, we are still unsure when this pandemic may be over. Reasonable estimates project that we should return to a greater sense of normalcy by 2023 when all countries are finally expected to receive their vaccines and immunise their populations. We don’t yet know for certain, so this means that as we approach our ‘COVID anniversary’ we should be mindful that we still have to take all necessary

Using ‘fancy words’ to impress people will not correctly convert your messages

AS a writer, I’ve had to continuously enhance and improve my writing skills. I’ve done this not only for myself but for the readers I write for. From improving my grammar, increasing my vocabulary and even learning the different writing styles and techniques, I’ve tried to improve on a bit of everything over the past few years. However, I recently realised that I’ve done all of this without understanding that there’s a time and place as to when I have to use a said technique or even a specific word. This may sound confusing at first, but hear me out. As a writer, or anyone who uses communication or words; I had to learn how to connect with my audience. I’m writing this column piece so that others who are interested in pursuing similar career choices or paths will be able to understand why this is important.

Your methods of communication are ineffective when the receiver does not understand the message. This is a basic concept many seem to stray from. I’ve seen many SEE PAGE XXV

FROM PAGE XXIV young writers, volunteers and even social media managers use an extensive vocabulary to execute their work. However, the audience they serve simply do not understand their messages, ideals, perspectives—no matter how simple it is because of the language they chose to use.

I’ve seen these people explaining simple concepts and ideas to their audiences with “fancy” words and sentences.

In fact, nothing’s wrong with being knowledgeable about words and communication methods that are vast and extensive. The problem lies when your ego gets in the way of when and how to use them. To be fair, many of us allow ourselves to think that we ought to “impress” and/ or “outshine” others. I’d personally call this a barrier of communication and language.

As such, when we’re in gatherings or we have a public platform, these fancy words and communication styles are used. I’d like you all to ask yourself these questions; Why do you use certain words in certain conversations or settings? Is there any intention to use such words? If yes, what is that intention? Many of your answers will probably be along the lines of wanting to be articulate.

However, I’d like for you to ask yourself these questions as follow-ups: will your audience understand your message through your articulations? Do you care if they understand your message is correctly conveyed? Or, is the articulation more important? These questions will be able to answer whether or not your intentions and methods to communicate are effective, or not. When you work in the realm of communication, you always try not to insult the intelligence of your audience, but at the same time you must not try to belittle them by using language they can’t understand.

If people feel intimidated by your tone, they simply won’t be interested in what you have to say. You might not intend to scare or intimidate them, but if your focus is solely on high IQ articulations, then your actions may say otherwise towards them. In Guyanese terms, it’s better to get on the grass-root levels of people and communication.

I always root for intellectual advancement and we should be able to use what we’ve learned—it’s a must! However, at the end of the day, if your line of work and people’s well-being depends on the information you’re trying to rely on, you must be able to learn how to adapt to their capacities of understanding and work with them at a level that is nurturing to them. Otherwise, you’ll be doing the title you hold a disservice by choosing ego over compassion. This should be a life skill for those in helping professions or positions.

My first business...

get inspired by her concept.

She was oblivious to the real reason why she was there, which was to decorate for her business shower. Maria Benchop is one of her mentors and it was her idea for the business shower, so she called to ask if we could plan it together and I did not have to think about it, because of who it was for. I was intrigued because it is my first business shower and I love to experience new things. She is

giving and always willing to assist everyone, so someone like that will always receive from others. Maria, my cousin Phera and myself planned this because of an event that had my cousin Clem crying when she realised on the day what it was. She talks about one day creating a décor service and the name will be Avis Lorraine Decor in memory of her mom, who is deceased.

Imagine buying things needed for the event and not realising

they were your gifts? Many great business ideas pass through our minds every day, but they make them a reality; it takes resources. We create a list of things she needed that will be necessary to contribute to a start-up business. The entrepreneurial journey can be challenging, but when you have a few good people who believe in your vision it is a huge help. When she came through the gate and saw not just family, but close friends,

she thought it was about her birthday and when it was announced what it was she cried even more. She looked at her business card and got emotional seeing her mother’s name on the card.

She even suggested fun things for the family to do, including Karaoke, which was also part of our plans because she loves to sing.

It was double happiness because her birthday was two days later. We decided it would be great to have a cake also to celebrate her birthday and I was elated about this new addition.

The cake was delicious and probably had too many slic-

es. Why did I suggest that she should return the next day for the cake? I certainly have more pounds (which I need to lose before my birthday) now than before that function. Many priceless moments were shared and memorable moments were created in a great ambience.

I enjoyed the tea area, but the bar was my favourite because it made me feel as if I were on an exotic island vacation. We all had a blast!

She was so grateful and appreciative for this support that pushes her closer to achieving one of her many goals. She was emotional while thanking

everyone for planning (behind her back) something that will certainly contribute to realising one of her dreams. She will be offering unique décor options for small or big functions. She will also be assisting people who may want to host a business shower, because it makes a difference to someone’s entrepreneurial journey. Their catchment area is Old England, Nottinghamshire, Sibernia, but when people visit from outlying villages, they do not send them away but assist.

The facility has a vaccine room, a staff kitchen, a doctor’s interview room and a waiting area with washroom facilities.

They have a visiting doctor and all cases they cannot handle are referred to Linden, which isn’t very far away.

Fraser is assisted by a very capable Nurse Chrisann Lorrimer, another Community Health Worker and a Clinic Attendant.

In Old England Village, Bakker is the ‘go-to’ person and the villagers would ask her advice and she would assist them in many ways whenever they need someone to talk to.

The retired teacher taught at many schools from 1964 to 2004 and she stopped teaching three years ago after spending years at a private school.

She wanted to help people and that motivated her to open her own private school at her home.

And these days she is minding a grandchild, her daughter’s new-born and would spend a lot of time in Blueberry Hill and visit Old England on weekends to attend to church business and community work.

The Old England Health Post The Old England Health Post sits on a hill in Old England Village and it is a small building that is well-kept and clean and serves a lot of people in the village and many who pass through.

The Health Post is managed by a very friendly and pleasant Community Health Worker, Zeraldine Fraser and four other staffers.

They provide primary healthcare in the form of out-patient services, ante and postnatal, family planning, childhood clinic, chronic diseases clinic and home-visits.“We assist people who come here in any way possible, that is, medically and if we can provide medical assistance we do not hesitate and the more serious cases we refer them to Linden Hospital Complex and we do not turn away anyone, people come for help and we do just that,” she said.

Fraser stated that on a daily basis more than 50 persons would visit to seek medical intervention for varying illnesses and people would visit from as far as Rockstone and other outlying areas, because of the services they provide and their cooperative and friendly demeanour.

“We don’t have any problems and we have good relations with the community and people come here because they feel comfortable and we don’t turn away people at all,” she said.

Fraser added that they treat patients just as how they would like to be treated when visiting a health facility, and they do not display any rude or disrespectful behaviour to

THE PASSAGE Pottery is the name given to all kinds of pots and utensils made from clay and other minerals when they have been ‘fired’, that is, hardened by heat in the potter’s kiln. Articles made of pottery include plates, cups and saucers, cooking dishes, wall and floor tiles, chemical storage jars, bathroom fittings, filters, drain pipes, electric insulators and ornaments for the home.

Pottery is one of the oldest crafts, which began to be practised as soon as man learned to control fire, and long before the melting of metals. It enabled him from very early times to make vessels for storing and cooking food, for carrying water, and for ritual burial purposes.

Early vessels were shaped by hand and probably ‘fired’ in a big bonfire by covering them over with dried grass and dead branches, which were then set alight.

A great advantage in pottery followed the invention of the potter’s wheel and the kiln.

It is not certainly known where the potter’s wheel was first used, but it is thought that by 3500 B.C. potters in Central Asia were using some kind of wheel. From there its use spread west and east to Egypt, Crete, China – and then to Ancient Greece and Rome.

Some Common Myths

IT never ceases to amaze me how many people still believe in falsehoods associated with dentistry. In fact, dental myths remain one of the greatest roadblocks to achieving good oral health.

These misconceptions promote behaviours that can be detrimental to the health of teeth, gums and oral tissue.

Because myths need to be replaced with facts to ensure the deliverance of appropriate oral care, an attempt is being made here to dispel some of the more common falsehoods.

Myth. Mostly children get cavities Regardless of age, cavities may occur whenever plaque, bacteria and sugar are present together in the mouth for more than 48 hours. Children usually develop cavities between the teeth and on the chewing surfaces. The elderly are especially prone to developing cavities on exposed root surfaces and around old fillings.

Myth. Cavities do not affect overall health If cavities are left untreated, decay will spread into the pulp (nerve) of the tooth causing an infection. Any infection can spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body. If the brain becomes involved, death can result. In fact, nine different conditions originating from dental abscesses are known to be fatal. Therefore, cavities indeed can have harmful effects on overall health.

Myth. A toothbrush with hard bristles cleans teeth better than one with soft bristles Using a toothbrush with hard bristles over a long period damages the teeth by wearing away the tooth’s surface.

Brushing exposed roots with hard bristles causes serious damage over a shorter period because roots do not have a hard protective covering of enamel. Using a hard bristle on gums can damage the tissue and cause them to recede.

Myth. Plaque can be removed effectively by brushing It is not possible to clean the surfaces between the teeth when brushing. So brushing alone cannot guarantee that your teeth will not decay. To completely remove plaque from all surfaces, the teeth should also be flossed. Plaque is associated with tooth decay and gum disease. If not removed daily, plaque can harden into calculus. This rough, cement-like substance must then be removed professionally by a dentist or dental nurse.

Myth. Denture wearers do not need dental checkups No denture fit is permanent. Over time, changes occur in the bone and soft tissues in the mouth. This affects the way a denture fits. To ensure continued proper fit, the denture wearer should have a dental exam at least once a year, so that necessary adjustments can be made. This yearly examination will also help alert the dentist to any signs of oral cancer.

Myth. Dentures should be worn at all times.

Dentures should be removed for at least six hours every day. This allows the tissues to rest and relieves the gums from the pressure of the denture. Excessive pressure can

cause the supporting tissues of the denture to shrink.

Dentures should be kept in water when they are not in the mouth so they do not warp.

Myth. Denture “fit” problems can be resolved

by using denture adhesives and home-denture reliners.

If large amounts of adhesives are needed to retain a denture, the denture should be adjusted. A proper fit can only be obtained if the dentures are professionally relined. Wearing poorly fitted dentures can damage the bone and soft tissues increase infection and expose the wearer to oral cancer.

Myth. A toothache sug-

gests that the tooth in question needs to be extracted There are six indications that a tooth must be extracted and pain is not one of them. Either pulp infection, pulp stimulation or pulp exposure usually results in toothache. There is a dental procedure to solve all such circumstances. Your dentist should be the one to advise if a tooth should be extracted. Extractions generally

cause mutilation which can never be fully repaired and which the patient often regrets when it is too late.
