Bakewell owner is 100% Guyanese

Bakewell Bakery and ‘Roti on the go’, Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York

By Ariana Gordon FOR Chief Samsair, Guyana remains his first love and even in business he ensures that there is a 100 per cent Guyanese touch.

Samsair, the owner of Bakewell bakery in New York and also a realtor, in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle’s New York edition said he migrated to the United States of America (USA) in June 1982. According to him it wasn’t an easy transition but he has made it work.

The owner of two Bakewell Bakeries, one located on Fulton Street, Brooklyn and the other on Liberty Avenue, Richmond Hill, Queens, Samsair says he interacts with hundreds of customers on a daily basis.

“Business is really good,”

he told Guyana Chronicle proudly as he explained the thrust of his business. The Fulton Street Bakewell location was the first of the two bakeries that the businessman opened. But the location also is the venue for Samsair’s ‘Roti on the run’ business that from all indication is a thriving business.

As we talked about his business at the Fulton Street location Samsair paused at every possible occasion to greet his many customers who were also delighted to see him. He explained that good customer service was essential to a successful business.

“I have many customers, it is difficult to give you a precise amount but I can safely say it is a lot. We have lots of Guyanese who come

to support the business but there are also other Caribbean people… Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados,” he added.

But it was not only Caribbean folk that rushed into the bakery from as early as 7am but Spanish nationals who crave “stews.”

“One goat stew and a beef curry,” one Spanish customer was overheard ordering from the staff of Bakewell as the interview was being conducted. Another customer asked for “a bag of tennis roll and some Guyana cheese.”

Samsair explained that many persons have been away from home for a number of years and customers feel at home when they eat from both Bakewell Bakery or ‘Roti on the run.’

“It is home away from home…you can get all the

The 43-year old businessman who is a father of two girls explained that while business was good he had a major challenge of finding skilled persons to work in his bakery and diner.

“My difficulty is staffing…most of the West Indian females have no culinary experience…most of them were housewives and so we are forced to educate or train them. It is difficult. What I want are people who can come here and cook or manage. When I have to train them it takes lots away.”

He believes that those who intend to migrate from

Guyana should try to acquire basic culinary skills. “I think people should utilise Carnegie more so that when they come here they are fully equipped.”

Notwithstanding the challenge of finding skilled staff, Samsair opened his second Bakwell and ‘Roti on the run’ location in June 2015. Asked how he manages the two businesses given the challenges he faces, he said, “In the morning I am in Brooklyn and in the evenings I am in Queens.”

“It is not tedious,” he assured while noting that his baked products are displayed in labelled packages similar to the Bakewell packaging out of Guyana.”

However, he pointed out that there was no affiliation.

“My father is relat-

ed to the former owner of Bakewell but Bakewell here is separate from the one in Guyana. We are a registered business,” he said.

Samsair disclosed that his father who resides in Guyana is a businessman who once owned the Ocean View International Hotel. “He was the first owner of the Hotel,” said he businessman who returns to Guyana once every year.

The businessman who has plans of expanding told Guyana Chronicle that before he expands his business it is his hope to see more persons migrating to the US from the Caribbean be properly skilled.

“I need more efficient and effective staff and the restaurant will do so much better…my profit margin will be better,” he added.

Serious crimes down 16% - Police report 7% reduction in murders, 7 % reduction in armed robberies, 14% reduction in rape SERIOUS crimes have been reduced by 16 per cent, but road fatalities continue to rise, according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a release issued on Monday.

GPF Public Relations Officer Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan said that, as at the end of May, serious crimes had decreased by 16 per cent. He said that murders have been reduced by seven per cent, while gun-related robberies have been reduced by 10 per cent.

Additionally, there was a seven per cent reduction

in armed robberies where other instruments were used by the perpetrators, and a 26 per cent decrease in robberies where violence has been employed.

Robberies with aggravation have been decreased by 14 per cent. The Force has also recorded a 27 per cent decrease in each of the offences: break and enter, and larceny and burglary.

A 14 per cent decrease has been recorded in rape; and a 52 per cent decrease has been recorded in larceny from the person.

However, incidents of robbery in which guns or other instruments were not used increased by 17 per cent.

Ramlakhan said the decrease in the crime rate is

no doubt as a result of the initiatives taken by the Government, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Guyana Police Force to de-escalate the crime situation.

“The police are increasingly gaining the public’s trust, resulting in a higher level of information-sharing and the solving and prevention of serious crimes, inclusive of murder.

“Exposure to training both locally and internationally continues to be a top priority at all levels of the Force,” he explained.

However, road fatalities continue to increase: “We have recorded 62 fatalities at the end of May this year, which are 14 more than (for) the same period last year.

While there was a reduction in serious accidents, there have been, again, increases in minor and damage accidents.

“Altogether, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and inattentiveness continue to be the main causes of fatal accidents,” the Superintendent explained.

The Guyana Police Force has thus far charged 30,788

persons with traffic offences this year. This includes 11,302 cases of speeding and 839 cases of driving under the influence.

“The Guyana Police Force wishes to publicly thank all of its ranks, who have worked to the best of their abilities and in some cases beyond the call of duty during our 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations; and, more particularly, (for) their commitment in realising a reduction in serious crimes,” Superintendent Ramlakhan said.

Investment confab ...to foster closer economic ties opens between Guyana and the diaspora

THE objective is to foster closer economic ties between Guyana and its diaspora, and that is exactly what the 100-odd participants will set out to do when the first ever conference of its kind to be held today.

Billed for the Harvard Club of New York City in mid-town Manhattan, the event, loosely titled the Guyana Investment Conference, will bring together Guyana’s leadership, the business community, corporate leaders and investors to explore the exciting investment opportunities in Guyana’s expanding economy.

Among Government officials slated to be in attendance are President David Granger; Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo; Minister of Public Telecommunication and Tourism, Catherine Hughes; and Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson.

As Salaudeen Nausrudeen, one of the organisers, told the Guyana Chronicle by telephone, the idea of hosting a forum of this nature came about from seeing that Guyana means business.

“The Guyana Investment Conference was organised as part of the 50th Anniversary activities in New York, and will fundamentally address the need for deeper engagement and an effective pathway between Guyana and the rest of the world, including the diaspora,” Nausrudeen said.

“One of the major results of this conference would be to see GO-Invest and the Ministry of Business build alliances with companies which can promote, nurture, and drive investment into Guyana,” he added.

Evidence that Guyana

was, as never before, ready for business, Nausrudeen said, was the success of last year’s ‘business expo’ as well as this year’s GuyExpo, which saw a host of entrepreneurs, organisations and even small businesses showcasing their drive for investment and commercial development.

He noted that the conference will cover various investment opportunities, key sector profiles, incentives, regulations, services of GO-Invest, and the enabling macro-environment, while also featuring networking sessions where investors, consultants, executives, finance specialists and decision makers can interact and network.

The first to admit it will not all be plain sailing, Nausrudeen said: “The road to make Guyana attractive and ready is rocky, but the conference embraces both the opportunities and challenges.”

The day-long conference will also provide a forum for potential investors who are looking at Guyana, with time for one-on-one with ministers and GO-Invest executives. Investors are therefore each being encouraged to bring an executive summary and overview of their investment plans.

According to Nausrudeen, “This is not a GO-Invest conference, but one crafted by private and business individuals in the USA who will help to build a pipeline for investment in Guyana while working closely with the Government of Guyana to

build alliances with not just the two countries, but also other foreign entities.”

Hence the approximately 125 or so participants will engage in deliberations with President Granger and other members of the high-level Government delegation at the conference.

Nausrudeen said that during the deliberations, talks will include means by which Guyana can be made attractive and ready for business, in spite of the many challenges that will arise from time to time.

Doing business in Guyana is reportedly now easier with the implementation of comprehensive invest policies to deliver higher efficiencies, responsiveness, and services to investors.

And according to the pundits, opportunities abound in the rich and vast land of Guyana; now is the best time for investors.

By the year 2030, Guyana is expected to be the primary investor destination in the region, featuring a well-diversified economy.

The Government of Guyana and the Ministry of Business are already making the necessary adjustments to implement easy investment-friendly policies to support this vision.

Editorial The New York Edition This New York edition which is a publication of the Guyana Chronicle, is honoured and pleased to be among the Diaspora’s choice of readership and source for information on what is happening in Guyana. This state-owned newspaper is seizing the opportunity to build on the Government of Guyana’s policy that holds the Diaspora in esteem and sees the members of this community as integral to the nation’s growth and development.

Being the nation’s paper it is our intent to represent the voices of Guyanese, irrespective of political association, ethnicity and other diversity.

As Guyanese, or of Guyanese parentage, adoption or association, regardless of where we live there lie common bonds and interests in Guyana and things Guyanese. Ours have been a heritage, though emerging out of diverse experiences, has seen the forging of a culture (i.e. lived experiences) uniquely Guyanese. Living in the diaspora, this is easily recognisable in areas such as accent, political interest, religious diversity, foods, music, concentration of residency, and cultural events.

This publication is not unaware that the Guyana Chronicle has a mixed history, where held perceptions, pleasant and not so pleasant, may prejudice making this a source of choice. It is not our intent to undo a past that was not in our control. It has been our intent and guiding principle to be your preferred readership, which was communicated at rebranding in our Editorial of 7th December 2015, “Role of the State media: a new era,” and to avoid the pitfalls of the past. The paper is committed to operate within the framework of ethical journalism and the carry out its watch-dog role in the coverage of news, opinions, places and things, both domestic and foreign.

As arm of the State our role is pivotal to nation-building and living up the ideals of the national motto, “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.” As such primacy will be given to the government’s agenda, inclusive of the views of members of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. Fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual, such as the right to be heard, including dissent and response, will be held in high esteem. Guyana belongs to all of us and we invite you to join us on this new and exciting phase of nation-building. HE may no longer reside in Guyana, but Guyana he says, is where his heart will always be. Patrick Hendricks, an employee of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (The NYC Water Department) believes more needs to be done to lift the educational and economic standards in Guyana.

But despite what may be deemed deficiencies in Guyana, Hendricks believes that over time Guyana will shine.

Asked to state the three things he’d like to see achieved on the national level, Hendricks said, “Educational standards being restored to what it was in the pre-1990 years; robust economic growth where we return to agriculture and manufacturing resulting in stable jobs for Guyanese youth; and aggressive integration with the Caribbean Community leading to an exchange of quality goods and services, labour, science and technology.”

The 46-year-old who now resides in Canarsie, Brookyn, New York currently works as Director of the Collections Unit within the Bureau of Customer Services.

He manages 21 persons and as Director he is responsible for planning, implementing, co-ordinating, monitoring and evaluating collection activities against delinquent water and sewer accounts.

“Also, I am tasked with defining the long, and short term goals, objectives and strategies to reduce the number of delinquent accounts and outstanding accounts receivables. I manage and coordinate the outstanding water (DEP) debt side of the City’s lien sale activities, participate in planning and attending the associated community outreach meetings.”

Added to that list of

Patrick Hendricks duties, Hendricks is also responsible for reviewing bankruptcy filings and submitting proofs of claim to US Bankruptcy Court in a timely manner to protect DEP’s financial interest when customers file bankruptcy.

He explained that as part of his duties he is required to attend City Council hearings with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to respond to agency policies and procedures relative to collection practices which aids in developing legislation regarding tax lien procedures.

Hendricks, a former resident of Garnette Street, Campbellville has only returned to Guyana twice in 19 years said he loves his job as he has the ability to learn something new almost on a daily basis.

“The work of our Bureau extends across both the technical field (for example, the different sizes and types of water meters and the intricacies of reading and billing them), and the customer service field (for example, determining strategies and policies that enable us to be more responsive and customer-friendly to our many customers).”

Immediately after arriving in the US in 1997

the former Campbellville resident begun school. He completed a two-year Associate Degree in Computer Operations at the Borough of Manhattan Community College-City, University of New York (BMCC-CUNY).

Thereafter, he transferred to Baruch College, CUNY where he spent two years and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Computer Information Systems. “ I then went across the Hudson River to New Jersey to attend the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where I completed a Master’s Degree in Information Systems in 2003,” said Hendricks, having attended school for six consecutive years.

Asked to state some of the challenges he has faced as a Caribbean, South American person coming to North America, Hendricks said, “I think the biggest challenge I faced after migration as a Caribbean/ South American person was familiarizing myself with living in a new country and quickly understanding how this system worked. This challenge was made easier because I had the benefit of support from mother and

stepfather, both financially and morally.”

Additionally, he said he was out of an academic setting for approximately 10 years so returning to school was difficult for him. “After migration, I then had to refocus and regain the proper mind-set to begin studying and functioning at a high academic level.”

The father of two, who has been employed at his current job since January 2011, but has worked with the City for almost 12 years said his hobbies are going to the movies and amusement parks with his children. He has been married for fourteen and a half years to Tricia.

He sees a bright future ahead and said he wants to become involved in volunteer work noting ‘that “something I’ve always wanted to do, but time has not permitted me to do.”

He plans to return to Guyana in the near future to visit his family and friends for he believes that there is “no place like home.”

“I miss Guyana dearly. What I miss most about Guyana is the relaxed and laid-back lifestyle and palpable atmosphere of major holidays such as Christmas, Easter etc.,” he told Guyana Chronicle.

Guyana’s Diaspora fully involved in Jubilee celebration G U YA N E S E i n t h e Washington Metropolitan area were caught up in the jubilee fever especially in May just like the rest of us celebrating in whichever part of the world we found ourselves during the period of festivities (due to continue in various forms until the end of the year).

The activities started in earnest on May 1 where at St John’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Rainer Maryland Guyanese guest pastor Kwesi Oginga delivered the sermon. Pastor Oginga extolled the virtues of Guyana for those in the audience who were too young to know and for the advanced in age to reminisce about a land they still called home. Oginga

spoke of the attempts by Guyana to fully exploit its resources over the years to the benefit of its citizens and expressed the hope that many could return to help in that regard. His message was enthusiastically received by the congregation.

That church service was followed by a kite-flying event in College Park, Maryland where Guyanese were able to mingle and interact with Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States His Excellency Bayney Karran, his staff and other well-wishers.

The event was hosted by the diaspora group Blossoms based in Maryland.

The rainy atmosphere, even though it prevented most of the kites from going up, did

not dampen the spirits of those who attended especially the many young children present. The fare was Guyanese to the core with chicken curry and roti, cook-up and chow mein among the foods, and musical entertainment took many gathered there into a nostalgic frenzy of Guyanese and Caribbean rhythms.

From St John’s it was to Newark, New Jersey on May 22 at the St. Andrew and Holy Communion Episcopal/ Anglican; again the significance of Guyana’s jubilee Independence celebrations was highlighted by Rector Reverend Dr. Sandye.A. Wilson. Mrs. Lesley Dowridge-Collins, Minister Counsellor at the Guyana Embassy

delivered remarks on behalf of Ambassador Karran.

The programme at St. Andrews was spiced up with the playing of folk songs and the sampling of a sumptuous range of Guyanese food and drink at the ensuing brunch. Old time stories were told and a mini queh-queh scene enacted much to the delight of the older folk.

Many of those gathered said they were excited at what they were hearing about the jubilee celebrations and some eagerly anticipated their booked flights to go celebrate at home. It seemed quite evident as they enjoyed the festivities that “small days was still on deh mind.”

Fifty years of Independence

By Neil Primus ‘Moving To The Next Level’ “When a girl changes from Bobby Socks to stockings And she starts changing her baby toys for boys.

When a girl changes from Bobby Socks to stockings Then she’s old enough to give her heart away.”

The magical lyrics of this popular ‘Oldie’ seem to aptly describe our nation. From a young, fledgling nation we threw away all childish behavior, fear and apprehension and boldly took flight embracing independence with bravery and maturity.

Guyana gave its heart away on May 26, 1966.

The Pride, Joy and Fulfillment felt back then, must have been intoxicating for all old enough to understand the significance of the moment.

Fifty years later we were given a taste of that sweet nostalgia when the large Golden Arrowhead rose to the top of one of the highest flagpole ever seen in Guyana.

With screams, cheers, tears and bliss Guyanese came together as one to herald their beloved nation.

Dr. Cheddie Jagan and Mr. L. F. S. Burnham must be hugging and patting each other on the back in satisfaction of our journey to this historic milestone. Both had worked hard and long, together and separately to ensure the success of this young nation. Through struggle, turmoil, sacrifice and triumph, Guyana began to shed its childish characteristics and move purposefully towards full maturity.

What a spectacle to behold as Jubilee Park (Durban Park), swelled to bursting point in order to accommodate patriotic Guyanese who were unwilling to miss this momentous occasion. On the 25th of May in anticipation of the Flag Raising Ceremony the massive crowd began filling the venue at 4 p.m. for a 9 p.m. scheduled start.

On the following day for the Jubilee Float Parade the same pattern emerged. For an event scheduled to start mid-morning, the stands once again began to quickly fill up by 10 00 am. Long after this facility was filled, people kept coming and coming.

The Flag Raising was the proudest moment for me as a Guyanese. When the majestic Golden Arrowhead rose to the top of the pole and fluttered in the strong breeze, I

had to fight back tears of joy.

It was the first time I genuinely felt that Guyana truly belonged to me.

With the media in full attendance -cameras, drones and professionals worked in earnest in an attempt to capture the spirit and truth of the moment. They were not alone in this endeavour.

From every stand cameras, Smart Phones and Tablets came alive. Guyanese were not missing out on this.

The Ministry of Education and the Department of Culture really outdid themselves.

They were able to present a programme worthy of such an occasion anywhere in the world. They must all be highly commended.

Tourists, visitors, guests and returning Guyanese and those who were working that night, jointly shared in celebrating our ‘Coming of Age.’ Crowd participation needed no prompting. As patriotic songs blasted out over the P.A System the more than 24,000 strong spectators and participants joined in singing each melody. After every item of the cultural display, the crowd roared its approval. Flags waved, people old and young gyrated, screamed danced and jumped up.

When Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo arrived he was given a rousing welcome. When President David Granger arrived shortly after, the crowd went wild. The roar emanating from Jubilee Park must have been heard at the top of Mt. Roraima and across the Rupununi Savannas. Even Cuffy must have cracked a rocky smile on his usually serious countenance.

He too must have felt some pride in theprogress and the role he and other heroes played in the forming of this great nation.

The Jubilee Float Parade was another great success.

The weather was with our nation. There were packed stands, crowded streets, full verandas and occupied vantage points. Business was booming. Everything you could think of buying was on sale. Food, liquor, snacks, toys, flags and other souvenirs, water, hats, sun shades, umbrellas and even chairs.

One look at the crowd convinced me that the population was fully involved. They were all there: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Every race, shade, colour and size was represented.

Float after float passed along Brickdam. With each passage there was an erup-

tion of festivity. Music sets boomed, people screamed and joked and a few got well and truly drunk. Chairs, benches, tents and a few make-shift contraptions helped viewers to enjoy the moving spectacle unfolding before their eyes.

Apart from food and liquor, umbrellas were the next most popular feature.

Even though the rain threatened every now and then, each time it retreated. It was not until mid afternoon that the showers hit. The water seemed to do little to quash

the festivities. The floats continued unfazed by the deluge.

Massive Speakers, Singers, DJ’s, Music Carts and Masquerade Bands were part of the dazzling displays by the many agencies involved in this huge undertaking. Even after the last float passed, the celebrations continued. Peopled could be seen making their way to where the action was taking place as darkness descended swiftly on the city.

The celebrations for the Golden Jubilee started earlier in the year. The first signs were the decorating

of Ministries, Private Businesses and Homes. Everywhere - on buildings, vehicles, electric poles and other prominent spots, flags and Golden Jubilee Logos were posted. Numerous plans were executed for this occasion.

Workshops, Seminars, Symposiums, Exhibitions, fairs, Awards, Competitions, Sporting Events, Plays, Shows, a Pageant, Pan Jams, Village days, Town Week, Album and Book Launches, Beach Volleyball, May Pole and many other cultural events.

The theme for the Golden

Jubilee ‘Reflect, Celebrate and Inspire’ was transcended from mere words and took a life of its own. Every Guyanese who attended the Flag Raising function must have felt the spirit of the occasion captured in those three words. Even those viewing on television or the internet must have experienced one or all of those pertinent words.

Guyanese at home and in the Diaspora remembered how it felt to be a true, true Guyanese.

Senator says unity key to success for Guyana

By Ariana Gordon SHE IS proud to be Guyanese and holds firm to that identity despite having obtained American citizenship and is now being a Senator in the United States.

Senator Roxanne Persaud, a Guyanese-born American Senator believes that Guyanese need to move away from racial division and work towards unity. Building on unity she says is the key to success for Guyana.

Senator Persaud who was elected to the New York State Senate in November 2015 after serving in the State Assembly, said erasing the history of racial divide will not be an easy task but it must occur and only then would Guyana and Guyanese progress.

“We need to stop comparing what former governments did and think about how we can help the current government to move the country forward,” said the former Middle Street, Georgetown resident.

She believes that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) - Alliance for Change (AFC) coalition government needs to look at the current infrastructure of the country, the education system and jobs for the youth.

Senator Persaud who served as a higher education administrator believes that the “disparity within the education system” must be addressed forthwith. But she also strongly believes that keeping the youths of Guyana “engaged” should be priority as idle young people is a recipe for disaster.

“Enforce upon them that it is their country, their responsibility to help to work to make the project progress… you’d see things changing but you first have to make sure that there are things for the youth to do,” she said.

The Senator who is fond of President David Granger and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo said she is optimistic that the issues facing Guyana and its people would be resolved soonest so as to ensure that the country develops to where it ought to be.

Good feeling She told Guyana Chronicle’s New York edition that

being elected to the New York State Senate was “a good feeling” as she loves working for the people.

“When you are working for people you are doing what’s right to elevate their status in life. It is always a good feeling.”

Though not expecting to be elected to that office so soon, Senator Persaud said it was her intention to run for elected office. “But I never really settled on which one of them,” she said as she explained that when in a district or a political club one would have to wait to see what positions become available.

“When you are part of the club there is structure so you just have to wait and see what becomes available. In my case, it so happened that the assembly seat became available and I was selected to run for that and It took me a while before I said yes because I had to think about many things. Then low and behold the senate seat opened up and I said I’d have to think about it again then I said I’d do it.”

Despite the challenges she is enjoying her new portfolio. “I am having a good time. There are challenges but in any profession they’d always be challenges.” Senator Persaud explained that her main challenge is “getting things done”. She explained that there are many things to be done, many issues to be solved but her constituents believe that as soon as one takes office a law can be written and all problems get solved.

“It is making people understand that there is a process and things would not change overnight and they’d have to work with us, the elected officials so we could get things done. If we don’t get it done today, it doesn’t mean that we are not trying,” said the Senator, stating that many persons are not interested in understanding the logistics behind achieving some things.

It is a work in progress she said noting that no one person can achieve everything they set out to. “No one can get everything done… no one can do everything but everyone can do something,” she said, noting that “If ev-

Senator Persaud has been living in the US for over 30 years and said she has always carried Guyana in her heart. She has been volunteering in Guyana over the years and despite not visiting the country in approximately five years, the New York Senator has been sending items to charitable organisations like the St Ann’s Orphanage.

She volunteered on several occasions in Guyana with the Guyana Cancer Society, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YMCA) and has also done work with The Organisation for Health and Advancement (OSHAG), an organisation to which she is a founding member.

Through OSHAG, she has done work with hospitals across Guyana and the University of Guyana (UG) “My thing is doing the work…I am not looking to be the publicity hound to sit and stand in front of a camera to say this is what I am doing,” said Senator Persaud who plans to return home after elections in September.

“I’ve been really busy trying to run for office. We

intend to go back to do other things… while I haven’t been going, I have still been sending things for them,” she told Guyana Chronicle’s New York Edition.

50 years of Independence Guyana on May 26 celebrated its 50th Independence Anniversary with much pomp and ceremony and many are proud of the country’s achievements over the years.

Senator Persaud is no different. She said, “I am proud of Guyana…I am proud of Guyana’s achievements and as much as I can I support Guyana.”

She believes Guyana has a bright future and should work assiduously to ensure that the foundation is laid for the youth.

“For the independence I had a resolution done by all my colleagues in the Senate and Assembly honouring Guyana and we gave organisations that came up…we gave them each a resolution.

When the President comes I am hoping to present him with the framed copy to take back to Guyana,” she said.

Senator Persaud intends to present the resolution to as many organisations as she can so that they can be

aware that the City of New York acknowledges Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

In New York she said she was focused on attending to the needs of all constituents in her District. She said she is however challenged by some Guyanese who believe that because she is Guyanese she ought to make Guyanese in her District her primary focus.

“I have a cosmopolitan district, a huge district so I have to make sure that I am attending to the needs of all the constituents in the district so I can’t say I am only focused on one group but I try wherever possible where I can do things for Guyanese.”

She terms the request by Guyanese an “unreasonable” one while stressing that “It is not one group of people who have placed me here it is not just Guyanese. I have to ensure I am taking care of all the constituents of the District, regardless of their nationality. If you want people to respect you and work with you, you have to show them that you are not partisan, not representing a partisan group.”

The Senator who enjoys reading and traveling said

while she has been focused on re-election she has not forgotten her roots.

“Even though I am assisting the Guyanese community I have to focus on what I have to do…to be frank, they are not the ones who are coming out to petition for me. I have to ensure my base continues to support me. My base hasn’t been the Guyanese people.”

I have an American passport, I am an American citizen but I am Guyanese. I still look out for what is needed by the Guyanese people.I may not be able to assist them in everything that they do and it is a totally unrealistic ask for you to say I should do everything for Guyanese people,” said the Canarsie resident.

Meanwhile, all Senator Persaud longs for is a visit to her country to bask in the memories of her childhood.

She said, “I miss fresh fruit, and Metem. I remember Easter where you fly kites and Diwali and Phagwah, that’s what I miss about Guyana.”

Senator Persaud is a graduate of Pace University from which she holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education Administration.

US charity to assist Guyana develop radiology services UNITED States-based charity, RAD-AID will be working along with the Ministry of Public Health to develop radiology services in Guyana with the first major step being the introduction of a Radiology Residency Programme in September of this year.

Team members of RADAID on Monday, June 6, 2016 met with Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton to discuss their plans.

Also present at the meeting was Head of the Accident and Emergency Unit at the GPHC, Dr. Zulfikar Bux, who had reached out to the charity, since it is his belief that radiology services in Guyana were not as developed as they should be.

RAD-AID is a group comprising radiologists, technologists, nurses, and other supportive staff who work in radiology and are dedicated to improving radiology services in developing countries.

Director of RAD-AID Latin America, Dr. Gillian Battino said that the charity’s goal in Guyana was to improve radiology services by bringing Guyana up to speed with what was available, in order to improve health outcomes.

According to her, the most important step in developing these services is the development of a three year Radiology Residency programme in Guyana.

“There are other examples of programmes that are built between a US institution and the Georgetown Public Hospital and we’re mimicking that so there are internal medicines, emergency medicine,

Dr. Battino highlighted that Guyana needed approximately 80 radiologists to serve the population and three persons will be trained each year during the threeyear residency. “We plan to utilize the educational system in place at the residency programme in the states and to

have the residents spend three to six months in the states to get a foundation and then do the rest of the training in Guyana with US physicians coming to Guyana to train,” she stated. She said that the idea is to build a sustainable programme which will continue for as long as possible.

Their work in Guyana, she noted, is not limited to physician training, since they also plan to improve nurses training, with attention to

radiology and technology.

According to her, improving the technology available to perform radiology procedures by adding electronic storage for x-rays which will include reporting systems is a major part of their efforts in Guyana. Dr. Battino said that they hope to put a system in place where an X-ray can be obtained in Bartica and read in Georgetown, using the internet. RAD-AID will be donating an ultra sound

machine to the Emergency Department at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The charity also received four CT scanners from Phillips Corporation and will be handing over two of them to Guyana, with the remaining two going to Haiti.

The two CT Scanners, which are valued at US$200,000 each, will be placed at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital in Region 6 (East Berbice/

Corentyne) and the Bartica Regional Hospital in Region 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni).

Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton thanked the team for their efforts and told them that he was looking forward to their support in the future. He was especially happy about the residency programme, since he is a strong advocate for Continuing Medical Education.

Chronicle Atlantic Symphony celebrating 50th anniversary IN conjunction with Guyana’s 50th anniversary celebrations in May 2016, the Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Steel and Brass Orchestra and troupe USA will also be celebrating their Golden Jubilee – 50 years in existence.

This will take the form of a gala – A Black Ties Affair – slated for September 2016 in Brooklyn, New York. However, these activities will commence with a Church Service at the St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, NY on August, 28, 2016 followed by a Meet and Greet on Septem-

ber, 2, at the same venue.

Formed in May, 1966 by Rudy Bishop, Phil Solomon and a few other young men on the foreshore of Kitty Seawall, the orchestra was first sponsored by Chase Manhattan Bank, Guyana Limited then the Guyana Chronicle Newspapers –hence their name – Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Steel Orchestra (CASSO).

Under the dynamic leadership of Rudy Bishop, former Member of Parliament (MP) and Medal of Service Recipient, CASSO quickly

became a household name with appearances at local and national events. This included performances for visiting Heads of State and other distinguished dignitaries, goodwill tours throughout Guyana and undefeated champions in the National Steel Band Competition from 1974 to 1981 and again in 1989 before retiring from this event.

Through the years as the orchestra’s name became famously known, brass, vocal and a dance troupe were included. This addition brought about the orchestra name

change to Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Steel and Brass Orchestra and troupe (CASSBO and TROUPE).

CASSBO and Troupe have travelled the world extensively as musical ambassadors representing Guyana at various forums and events such as the Tchaikosky Festival –USSR; appearances at United Nations and A Day in the Life of Muhammed Ali; the Famous Apollo Theater –USA; concerts honouring Guyanese cricket hero – Clive Lloyd –United Kingdom; Concerts at Canadian

House of Parliament; World Trade Fair; Redeau Canal – Canada; performances on the famous COPA Cababana beach, Rio de Janeiro – Brazil; the CARIFESTAS IN Guyana, Jamaica, Cuba, Barbados just to name a few.

CASSBO now resides in the USA and continues to excel with sterling performances in many cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA; Atlanta, GA; Chicago, Illinois; Portland, Maine and the district of Washington, DC. Etc. various awards have been bestowed

on the orchestra such as: Citations from representative of the US congress, plaques, trophies and certificates including the Sunshine award – a recognition equivalent to the Grammies.

This award was received by entertainers such as the late, great Bob Marley, the late Bryon Lee and the Mighty Sparrow. The orchestra was also honored by the then Borough President Marty Markowitz with a proclamation naming every 26th Day of May – Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Day.

Norton plugs fast-track approach to end AIDS

By Ariana Gordon in New York GUYANA through its Minister of Public Health Dr George Norton has called on global leaders to adopt fasttrack measures to end AIDS in the age of sustainable vevelopment.

In his speech on Wednesday at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS, in New York, Dr Norton stressed the need for all stakeholders to charter the course in ending the epidemic by 2030.

“The fast track approach is needed. This meeting therefore Mr. Chairman, must deliberate carefully on the roll out the fast track approach, particularly focusing on strategies that will assist countries and regions to do,’ said the Minister of Public Health He also emphasised the need for the required financial resources to be carefully considered and made accessible to countries that are in dire need of support - countries that are facing the brunt of the epidemic.

Guyana, the Minister of Public Health assured, has come a long way in its fight against AIDS but noted that eliminating the scourge completely by 2030 will require tremendous effort.

“Guyana is ready to embark on this journey with each one of you to end AIDS. Our Government has already indicated our intent to test and treat, we have scaled up our testing services in

a strategic way to ensure maximum yield, targeting the right persons, in the right places and at the right time,” Dr Norton added.

Guyana, he said, has witnessed a steady reduction in HIV prevalence among the general population from 3.4% in 2004 to 1.4% in 2013. At the end of 2014, a total of 751 cases of people living with HIV were diagnosed compared with 758 cases reported in 2013.

These statistics the Minister said continues to represent a significant reduction when compared to the 1,176 HIV cases reported in 2009.

In order to continue reducing new infections or sustaining people living with HIV/AIDS, closer collaboration with national, regional and international partners will be required.

He said too that the Guyana Government is fully committed to ending the epidemic by 2030 and is building on the lessons of shared experience within the context of the country’s Health Vision 2020 (HIVision 2020) that provides a holistic framework for the national health response.

The Public Health Minister noted that important in the ending of AIDS is the elimination of stigma and discrimination and as such bold targets have been made to prevent stigma and discrimination.

Within the HIVision 2020 framework, Guyana’s HIV/ AIDS response is guided by a comprehensive strategy,

and is financed from the national budget integrating relevant UNAIDS targets, and drawing on best practices and the support of key partners, including the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), and the US PEPFAR programme Guyana, the Minister said has also been successful in reducing deaths to HIV/AIDS from a peak in 2005, and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. He said too that the marked success is as a result of Guyana’s HIVision 2020 which is underpinned by the principles of human rights, gender equality, inclusiveness, accountability, value for money and sustainability and supported by a multi-stakeholder partnership.

Its goal is “to reduce the social and economic impact of HIV and AIDS on individuals and communities and ultimately the development of the country.”

It focuses on five priority areas: Coordination; Prevention; Treatment, Care and Support; Integration and Strategic Information. The programmatic response of the government has thus been grounded in these overarching principles throughout the national HIV response.

The national response, Dr Norton added, has placed a strong emphasis on prevention, treatment, care and support. In 2014, more than 5,000 health care workers were trained in a wide

cross-section of areas to assist in the fight.

These efforts were also focused on reaching the masses in the areas of sexual and reproductive health (SRH), HIV sensitisation, voluntary counselling testing (VCT), or prevention of mother to child transmission to name a few. Focussing on youth, the Youth Friendly Health Services Initiative continued providing sexual and reproductive health services to adolescents.

“Worthy of mention is that in 2014 there was a decrease in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). 5,127 cases were reported, which was a decrease, from the 6,777 cases reported in 2013.

42% of the cases reported were within the age group 15-24.”

On the financial front, Dr Norton made it clear that there is a great need for adequate financial resources to fast track weak countries’ approach to ending AIDS by 2030.

“I know that through the Global Fund and PEPFAR, many countries have made significant dents in their epidemics.

“Guyana is a good example of how support from these two funding mechanisms and other partners has moved our country to place where HIV is now manageable, new infections and AIDS related deaths have reduced and People living with HIV have better quality of live,’ said the appreciative Minister of Public Health.

Guyana remains con-

cerned, however, that countries of the region continue to be excluded from funding as a result of being categorized with Middle or High Income Country status.

“The focus for financial assistance in combating this disease should not only be on Small Income Countries, but rather developing countries as a whole.”

Dr Norton called for the application of every avenue and strategy available when addressing prices for ARVs and HIV commodities when addressing the issues surrounding the response to the key populations and persons in difficult circumstances.

At the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, Minister Norton said funding programmes such as the Global Fund and PEPFAR have saved many lives and prevented new infections in Guyana and across the globe.

He noted that the increasing domestic funding by countries as part of its shared responsibility and global solidarity is a welcome trend that ought to continue for sustainability of the AIDS response.

“Despite the commendable global and national efforts, Guyana acknowledges the risk posed by maintaining the current level of HIV service that will result in a rebound in the epidemic,” said Norton who called for front-loading and increased investments to fast-track the AIDS response; adoption of ambitious bold targets ; access for all including

fragile communities; health systems strengthening; continued strong and efficient global partnership; effective accountability; and the application of the model of the AIDS response to support results for the SDGs. Guyana, the Minister of Public Health said lauds the achievements of the 2011 UN Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS including reaching the target of 15M persons living with HIV (PLHV) on antiretroviral treatment (ART) by 2015.

Dr Norton said he is pleased with the recently released UNAIDS report on the status of the epidemic but noted that more than half of the estimated persons who need the ARV are not receiving same.

“The similar parallel can be drawn in my own country, where in 2015, about three of every five people living with HIV in Guyana were receiving antiretroviral therapy (58%), up from approximately one in five ten years ago (22%). We have made progress, but the evidence is clear that there is role for treatment as prevention and test and treat works.”

Given the aforementioned, the Minister of Public Health, said it is imperative that stakeholders work assiduously to recognise the gaps in their HIV response.

“We cannot end AIDS if persons are not antiretroviral therapy, leaving persons living with the disease behind, is NOT an option,” stated Dr Norton.

Free medical and legal services

By Ariana Gordon AS part of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in New York, the Guyana Gives Back committee hosted a number of free medical and legal services in the Tri-State area.

Several persons in the East Flatbush area benefited from free medical services compliments of Dr Janie Emmanuel McLean and Dr Gordon John who facilitated the free service at the Atlantis Foot Care centre located on Utica Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.

According to Dr McLean, the initiative to provide free medical and legal service to communities in the Tri-State area came about because of the many blessings members of the Committee would have received over the years.

‘We have been so blessed coming to these United States with education and resources that it is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community in terms of free medical care.’

Dr McLean who is also chairman of the Guyana Gives Back committee said fifteen free medical clinics were established along with two free legal services.

‘The entire thrust is for people to understand the importance of taking care of their health because basically your health is your wealth. If you don’t have good health you won’t be of any value to yourself.’

She said it is important

for persons, not only Guyanese’ to understand the importance of self-care. ‘We are helping people to see that before they can take care of anybody else they must first of all take care of themselves.’

The response she said has been good despite the fact that at some of the locations there were only a handful of persons taking advantage of the free services. ‘‘Some the events are a little sow, we understand people are at work and it picks up later in the afternoon but it for us, is a mandate that we give back to the community. We count it a privilege to do so.’’

Additionally, Dr McLean disclosed that she and members of her team are part of an organisation that provides free medical missions globally. The team of medical professions visited Guyana last March and in the next two weeks will be traveling to St Lucia to provide medical services. ‘ Giving back is a way of life for us… so when this opportunity came for us to do the free medical services we said this is a way of helping the wider population to see that Guyanese are conscious about community service.’

She made it clear that while the clinics have been set up in communities that are predominantly Guyanese, they were not only for Guyanese to take advantage of. ‘I would hope that this would be a catalyst for Guy-

is a way of life for him and counts himself lucky to be able to provide free foot screening, diabetes and hypertension checks ‘We are celebrating as Guyana’s 50th … we have been blessed and fortunate and so it is natural that you must share that with the less fortunate,’ he said smiling.

John has been examining and treating foot ulcers, diabetic concerns, pain in the feet and fungus on the nails. Asked whether persons taking advantage of the free clinic have been given the opportunity to return for further evaluation and treatment, the Podiatrist said, ‘Follow up treatment is an option…they can always return.’

Both doctors are hopeful that all those who participated in the free medical and legal services would take time to return to the respective doctors and lawyers to ensure that all their issues are solved.

Other services offered provided by the medical clinics were OBGYN, Cholesterol and Breast screening.

Shipping is ‘High Energy’ business

By Ariana Gordon FOR George Solomon of Solomon Shipping in the US, business is good and he is excited about the future. He told Guyana Chronicle’s New York Edition on Wednesday that the family business which begun in Guyana more than 25 years ago has evolved over the years.

Currently, Solomon Shipping has three US locations, one on Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, another on Liberty Avenue, Queens and the third location at East Orange, New Jersey.

Solomon is the owner, manager of the New Jersey branch of the business and he describes the business as a

‘High energy’ one where you have to remain focused.

The company officers service not only to Guyanese but also to the Caribbean Region, Panama, Suriname, Africa and Europe.

‘We are involved in shipping…import and export… the shipping of commodities, commercial cargo, furniture, personal effects, barrels, boxes, crates, vehicles and the like,’ he told Guyana Chronicle.

According to Solomon, his company sends cargo twice weekly whether by air or sea, however, wherever the circumstances warrant additional shipments are made.

He said air cargo usually arrives the same day but if it

doesn’t, customers would be in receipt of their packages within three days after it was sent. Sea cargo on the other hand arrives at its destination between three and four weeks after it was sent.

With two locations in Guyana, one in Albertown and the other on Robb Street, Solomon described business as ‘going good’. Asked whether he feels threatened by the many new shipping companies that have recently been established, the businessman said, ‘there is enough business for everyone’.

He assured Guyana Chronicle’s New York Edition that he is by no means threatened by the growing

number of shipping companies and explained that he has a loyal customer base.

‘We have been around a while…over the years customers have received good service and so people continue to ship…there is a steady flow of business,’ he added while noting that Solomon Shipping does not advertise its service in New York.

‘I’m sure if we advertise we can do much better—we don’t only ship to Guyana, we ship to other Caribbean.

I’m not threatened by the competition- there is enough for everybody.’

The managing Director of the New Jersey branch of the company said he is not opposed to competition once

competition is fair. ‘Over the years weathered the storm… we survived… we are optimistic that things would be better.’

Solomon explained that he and his brothers have ‘diversified’ their business over the years and have tapped into the real estate market.

They now own several properties both in the US and Guyana.

When asked about plans to expand outside of New York and New Jersey, Solomon disclosed that attempts have been made over the years to have an office in Maryland but due to logistical problems, the office was closed.

‘It is a difficult business having somebody there and

you here---- it didn’t fan out well… there is always under hand business. The kind of energy needed [to make it work] isn’t put in,’ said Solomon who said the running of a shipping company requires persons to work beyond eight hours.

Solomon said he is proud of the achievements of his business and more so pleased with Guyana’s achievements over the years.

‘Guyana is a paradise,’ he remarked as he reminisced on his time spent home to celebrate the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

High-tech surveillance - Gov’t considering use of drones to combat piracy FOLLOWING the recent pirate attack, the David Granger-led administration is considering employing drone technology to monitor Guyanese waters.

A well-placed source has revealed to the Guyana Chronicle that at a recent high-level meeting involving senior government officials, the issue was discussed and the government will be pursuing discussions with their Surinamese counterparts to partner on the effort.

The use of drone surveillance technology is reportedly expensive and the government is keen on exploring a cost-sharing mechanism with Guyana’s eastern neighbour in an effort to provide hightech surveillance of the two countries’ international waters as part of a joint effort principally to tackle piracy

which, after several months of quietude,has recently resurfaced.

Surveillance drones employ similar technology to consumer drones which are becoming popular in Guyana, but are much larger, fly undetected in the skies and are outfitted with powerful cameras which are able to take video footage and photographs.

This could aide authorities in the early detection of suspicious vessels operating in the area and security personnel can be alerted and pursue these vessels before pirates are able to execute attacks on fishing boats.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the government is also making plans to move the MV Tamakay to the Atlantic waters off the Corentyne region. The MV

Tamakay is currently birthed in the Waini region, where piracy has not been an issue.

The Guyana Police Force will also deploy a specially outfitted vessel to the Corentyne to be on constant patrol of the waters where piracy has been most prevalent in recent years.

The mandatory installation of transponders on fishing vessels is also being mulled, along with a consideration to issue firearm licences to boat operators on the condition that the firearms are used exclusively for protection on the high seas and that they are lodged at the nearest police station once the boats return to shore.

Five pirates were last week charged with the murder of fisherman, Hemchand Sukdeo.

They are 19-year-old

three fishing vessels in the Lower Shell Area off Nickerie, Suriname. In the aftermath of the attack, 45year- old Hemchand Sukdeo, known as “Dread” of #55 Village, was discovered in a seine with wounds to the head.

Police acting on information from the captain of

one of the hijacked boats, Seepersaud Persaud, of Corriverton, were able to detain a boat matching the description of the one used during the attack and the five men were on board at the time. It was also alleged that one of the men confessed to the act during interrogation.

Immediately after the US Embassy (Georgetown) granted Williams a visitor’s visa to attend the funeral of her 16-year-old daughter, Fly Jamaica presented her with a free first-class ticket.

However, it was the Mark Benschop Foundation which had intervened on behalf of the grieving mother of six.

The foundation has been offering much needed help to the Williams family since the murder of their loved one on May 31 in the US. The return ticket was presented to Williams on Tuesday by Fly Jamaica Representative Desrene Caine at the airlines head office at Ogle.

With mixed emotions,

Williams said she will forever remain grateful to the US Embassy, Fly Jamaica and the Mark Benschop Foundation for making the trip a reality.

“I just want to say thanks to everyone for helping through this difficult time,” she told the Guyana Chronicle in a brief telephone interview.

Williams will depart Guyana on Friday night for the US, where she will witness the viewing of her first born in Brooklyn, ahead of the funeral on Tuesday.

Mercurius was riddled with bullets while babysitting her little cousin inside their Brooklyn apartment on May 31. On her dying bed she reportedly gave investigators the first name of her alleged killer.

Days after the horrendous act was committed, cops hauled Taariq Stephens out of his 67th Precinct stationhouse in Brooklyn.

The 24-year-old, who has

Flag on the summit of Mount Ayanganna.

Each year, on the eve of Guyana’s Republic Anniversary soldiers would brave the many flowing rivers, mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions to hoist the Golden Arrowhead at an altitude of 6,700 atop Mount Ayanganna.

One notable feature, however, is that over the

years female soldiers have taking up the challenge to overcome the crest of Mount Ayanganna.

The Women’s Army Corps made history when the first female conquered the peak in 1992 and again when anall-female patrol climbed the mountain in 2005 and 2009.

This year, a team ventured to the top of the moun-

tain to raise the flag for Guyana’s 50th Independence anniversary and that team included Lance Corporal Shannon Ross –Cox, the only female in the contingent.

Guyana Chronicle recently had the opportunity to meet the first woman soldier to climb to the top of Ayanagana for the event, and the most recent female soldier to do so, namely, Ross-Cox.

Staff Sergeant (ret’d) Beverley Somersetmade history when she was recorded as the first female climbed the mountain24-years ago.

Her accomplishment paved the way for other females to take on the challenge of conquering Mount Ayanganna.

Somerset said that she requested to climb the mountain to send a strong message

to the male soldiers. This was after she was denied the opportunity to complete the para-trooping course.

The patrol left Timehri on February 8, 1992for Imbaimadai with eleven male soldiers including two Officers- Captain Lee and Second Lieutenant Jackson, along with Somerset.

A home away from home…

- Queens, NY dubbed little Guyana

By Navendra Seoraj AS a Guyanese in the United States of America (USA) for the first time, your thoughts would be consumed by much curiosity since your expectations would be keen…zooming in on a different atmosphere, new people, places and a host of other intriguing features.

However, it was surprising to me, a Guyanese journalist, that a walk along Liberty Avenue, Queens, New York would leave me wondering whether I was dreaming, or actually back in Guyana.

From the smell of fresh vegetables to the scent of garbage piled up on the side of the road waiting to be picked up, Queens definitely holds a number of similarities to that of Guyana.

The nostalgic feeling of being back home comes rushing back, after a rapid-fire dose of Creolese, Guyanese slangs and colloquial language being tossed around by the many passersby and persons congregated at local bars or market places.

The sound of Creole and laughter draw you to the many attractions, be it stores like on Regent Street or a restaurant and bar full of Guyanese and other Caribbean counterparts enjoying a good time together in one space.

“Bai I feel like I’m home, only when is winter time the place feels different but other than that when it’s summer we does enjoy outings, picnics and even go fishing just like if we’re back home in Guyana,” said someone I encountered during my one

of my walks.

Several individuals even refer to Queens as “Little Guyana,” because of the similarities of cuisine and hair texture.

Features such as Caribbean music booming from almost every corner or car, whether Indo or Afro, the streets are always lively with the melodious sounds which give you the extra boost to make it through the day.

The alluring music at times lead you to Guyanese shops and stores which offer almost any item available in Guyana, some of them even boast patriotic names such as: Little Guyana Bake Shop, and even off-shoots of businesses such as New Thriving, Bhena’s Footwear and so forth.

And to much amazement, those are not the only Guya-

nese commercial methods adopted by persons in Queens, given that at certain corners persons who own a car engage in the “taxi hustle.”

joy all the features which remind them of home, from the taxis to their kitchen and backyard gardens which they spend their leisure time taking care of.

Bam-Bam Alley

…a cornucopia of pleasures

UP to 20 years ago the two-block western verge along Orange Walk between Regent Street and South Road was a somnolent pasture that accommodated more cows than people and vehicles.

Today there is no such space for the bovine brethren as the mini boulevard has been transformed into a parking lot of shiny metal of the two and four-wheeled kind. Drivers and riders wend their way slowly and carefully, conscious that they are on hallowed turf – Bam-Bam Alley At first there was only one food-andbeer joint - Sweet Point, run by an intrepid entrepreneur named Ronald Betancourt, aptly called ‘Sweet Hand.’ Then ever so slowly, as eagles dare, others ventured forth and the last time I looked there was no more space for expansion, unless the City Council is going to go the two-storied route.

Every city in the world has its pleasure and notoriety spots. As youngsters we dared not let our parents know we had been within spitting distance of Tiger Bay’s Lina Diner on Water and Murray Streets, though just passing close to the ‘venerable’ underworld joint was enough to boast about for weeks.

Upper Albouystown cradled “Hell’s Kitchen,” East Ruimveldt housed ‘Warlock’ and not so long ago at Barr and James Streets in ‘All-Man-Town,’ ‘Taps’ had underlined his authority. Plaisance Line Top sputtered and fizzed but never really caught afire.

These were all epicenters of violence where social issues most often ignited into violence. They will come and they will go.

But somehow Bam-Bam Alley exudes permanence. Orange Walk is no more. It’s more likely to be: “Meet me at Sweet Point” Or,

“Let’s go to the Alley.” It definitely won’t be kosher if you gave any indication that you didn’t know the locale of the destination.

There was a time when no self-respecting woman would be seen on Bam Bam Alley or in one of its joints. Most were hesitant to stay for long periods because the majority of the pubs didn’t have toilet facilities, a situation which has been partially corrected. However there is one school of argument which suggests that the brief exposures might be the genesis of the area’s unconventional name.

The Alley is super for a liquid lunch.

Guys (and girls) from all walks of life, my St. Stanislaus College friend who is now a doctor in Brooklyn, another buddy who is a dentist in Maryland, a judge, a lawyer, a senior Army Officer, and a politician. All in one day at Wesley’s Hang-Out. Two retired bankers, a minister, an engineer, a historian, and an exuberant ex-civil servant were ensconced in their favorite chairs. Heaven was right there.

The Alley holds a magnetic attraction for many who visit. It is bustling, vibrant, teeming with activity and it is within touching distance of most of the major points of the city. It has already won a place in Georgetown’s fast-changing landscape.

I finished my beer and was about to pay my bill when I felt a slight tug on my shirt’s sleeve. It was my pedantic primary school English teacher. He was the last person I wanted to see, especially after consuming all that liquid.

He moved right in swinging. “Mr. Wray, I see you are back at the Chronicle. Hope you can arrest the decline. You have to do something about the callous disregard for spelling, syntax and the noun-verb relationships. It seems that the once cherished

dictionary is an encumbrance. You have to slay the dragon and you have to venture into the murky and cloying waters of ineptitude.”

“I promise to do my best,” was all I could get out, as he grabbed my hand and hissed “this is why this stretch is called Bam-Bam Alley.”

I looked where he was looking. I saw a well-shaped body in a simple dress that

clung to every curve. His lecherous eyes were fastened on the retreating figure moving with a slight hint of provocation, liberal jostling taking place under the thin cloth.

A trio of women in colorful tights came into view, none with glamorous appendages that appealed to him. Reluctantly he bade me adieu with the promise that I would see him again.

Not if I saw him first.

THOUGH Journalism remains his passion, former Guyana Times Journalist Andrew Ross has made a partial shift in career path.

Ross migrated to the US in 2012 and since then he has been trying new things.

It has been an adventure he told Guyana Chronicle’s New York Edition while noting that he found it increasingly difficult to obtain a job in the field of journalism.

‘Life has been good to me…I’ve had many opportunities,’ he said while explaining that the situation in the US is by far different from that in Guyana. Ross who is now a photographer and owns his own studio ‘1103 Films’ said all he has done thus far is fulfilling.

The former journalist has worked with Hotspot Guyana and GT Vybz as a photographer but says he is now moving away from doing photography in the entertainment arena and is working towards doing more of a cultured type of photography.

‘I want to explore more professional photo—Move away from entertainment events,’ said Ross who noted that his decision to focus less on the entertainment industry has been beneficial to him and has opened doors that he never envisioned would have opened so soon.

‘In March I volunteered as a photographer for the Queens World Film Festival…the 6th annual Festival…they feature over 150 films from different film makers around the world,’ he told Guyana Chronicle. That experience Ross said was beneficial to him and opened his eyes to the future.

He now has an interest in film-making and says he believes there are many untold stories about Guyana that needs to be publicised.

‘I applaud Yaphet Jackman and Kojo McPherson…they do a fantastic job; they are working on several projects but there are many stories about Guyana that need to be told…there are other

things that they may not think about,’ said Ross.

He noted that in the long term he is going to be producing films about his homeland that would compel persons the world over to be interested in.

‘That experience has boosted my business in a way as well—I received certification and really valuable experience that I won’t forget,’ he said proudly.

He told Guyana Chronicle that he opted to stop working at the Barber shop because it is stationed in Brooklyn and he lives in Queens.

‘I stopped February this year… after that I went head on into photography…I now have a home study,’ he said while mentioning that he is keeping his options open.

He believes there are many opportunities that exist, one of which is photojournalism.

‘I am following my dream, if it takes me to photojournalism then so be it,’ the 29-year-old said.

Ross who is married and has one child, said he misses

‘I miss them, I miss being physically there but with every long distance relationship there is always the physical distance that is a challenge.’

He recently spent some time with his family in Guyana so all is not lost.

Meanwhile, Ross said he regrets not being able to return to Guyana for the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations but said thanks to internet and one of the cable companies he was able to see the hoisting of the Golden Arrow Head.

‘It was a nice patriotic feeling to know I could see Guyana’s flag raising ceremony…it was a very nice experience,’ he said.

Guyana he said is where his heart is. When asked what he misses the most about Guyana, Ross jovially said, ‘The Weather!! I miss the weather the most…after growing up in Guyana it is difficult for me to adjust to the many seasons here, particular winter…I miss the sunshine and rain, I miss Guyana.’

Jubilee visitors ‘exhale’ MORE than 27, 000 passengers arrived in Guyana in May using the country’s main port of entry – the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA.) According to CJIA’s Statistics Department, 27,353 passengers arrived in Guyana in May, compared to 15,173 passengers for the same period in 2015.

As such, an 80.3 per cent increase in passenger traffic was recorded at the international airport.

Additionally, the statistical data indicates that there was a 15 per cent increase in passenger arrivals from January to May, 2016 when compared to the same period in 2015.

The total arrival for the year as of May 31, 2016 was 102,110.

The airport credited the

large influx of passengers to Guyana’s Golden Jubilee Independence Celebration. It is believed that many of the overseas-based Guyanese and tourists who visited Guyana in May would have participated in the historic flag raising, and independence costume and float parade.

“Commercial airlines – Caribbean Airlines, Dynamic Airways, COPA, Suriname Airways, Fly Jamaica and Insel Air – also recorded surges in passenger movement for the month,” CJIA stated in a release on Wednesday.

Ramesh Ghir, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) said too that the airport’s stakeholders had partnered with management to guarantee a smooth process through the terminal building.

Cocaine found in fish cargo, 10 arrested

The police released this image of the cocaine in the frozen fish THE police have arrested 10 persons in connection with the discovery of six kilograms and 44 grams of cocaine in a cargo shipment of frozen fish at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

A police release noted that the shipment consisted of several boxes. The discov-

ery was made at about 02:10 hrs on June 8 by ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch.

According to the release, the bust comes as the Guyana Police Force is intensifying its efforts to clamp down on the scourge of drug-trafficking. The cargo was destined to be shipped to the United States of America.

When she left the airport, she was very excited. She stated that she undertook vigouroustraining before the trip so she was physically fit.

They went through the Mazaruni River to Chi Chi Falls in Region 8 (Potaro –Siparuni), which is about 350 feet high. They then headed to the Chinoweng which took them about four hours.

On arrival at the village, the villagers were curious as to why she was on the expedition, since they were accustomed to seeing only men. Some of them even encouraged her not to go, as they explained to her the challenge she would have face when climbing to the summit.But Somerset used their discouragement as motivation to complete the patrol.

Somerset explained that out of the twelve persons who were on the patrol, only six of them made it to the summit. They had to cover difficult terrain and contend with harsh weather conditions at the same time, even going through a rocky tunnel where they were guided by each other’s footsteps.

But as they reached the summit, it was what Somerset described as savannah.

She stated that the view from the summit was amazing.

“There is a very large rock on the summit, it is clean without mass, and it is very shiny.”

When they reached the peak, she felt that she had accomplished that mission she had set out to do; indeed she had. When asked if she would do it again she said “I will because I have the belly.”

Ross- Cox described the experience as a wonderful one. She stated that while the walks were long and the climbing was rough, she was prepared for it.

Unlike Somerset, who had to cover an additional set of walking from for Imbaimadai, Ross- Cox and the team were dropped off at Chi Chi and they walked to get their guide at Chinoweng, who took them to the mountain foot.

When they reached the peak, she felt that she had accomplished that mission she had set out to do; indeed she had. When asked if she would do it again she said “I will because I have the belly.

”

She stated that the climbed was most challenging of the expedition; she compared the climbed an assault course, where she was under and over trees among other obstacles.

When she reached the peak, theteam said the Army creed, sung the song of the Republic and said the National Pledge and planted

the flag.

Ross-Cox was satisfied that the task was accomplished. After all, she had the responsibility of bearing the flag through the journey and that has imbued in her a sense of deep pride. Indeed, she swore to put country first, and by accomplishing this feat, she has surely demonstrated her loyalty to country.

THE Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) in its mandate to promote the consumption of fresh fruits and value-added products,distributed samples to visitors who came to Guyana during the last week leading up to Guyana’s jubilee independence anniversary.

The team from the Guyana Marketing Corporation took the opportunity to present visitors from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and the Eugene F. Correia International Airport with packages of fresh and Agro-processed foods. Samples of plantain chips, cassavachips, cassava bread,tamarind balls, peanut bars, nut cake, sugarcake anda variety of fresh fruitsincluding watermelon, banana,

papaw and pineapples weredistributed. A total of 790 Agro-processed sample packages and 750 sample containers of fruits were prepared and distributed to incoming visitorsat both Airports.Guyana Shop post cards were also given to the visitors who received samples.

General Manager of Guyana Marketing Corporation Ms. Ida Sealey-Adams stated that the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Corporation were elated to capitalize on the opportunity to promote the local commodities. Two more wells for Diamond

“It worked for the last three months, but it has now again presented a problem.”

Dwayne Shako, Director of Operations at the GWI, explained that the Diamond

There was an attempt to remedy the rupture, but the remedy proved futile owing to the pressure placed on the well by the growing community.

Shako underscored poor electricity levels, voltage fluctuations, and power complications as reasons for the other damage to the well, and even to other

wells along the East Bank of Demerara, a position that was supported by Dr VanWest Charles.

Residents in the Diamond Housing Scheme have been experiencing prolonged water shortage for about a week or so. As an immediate remedy to the situation, the GWI will deliver water using tanks.

According to a release from the water company, vehicle numbers GVV 4698 and GSS 6751 will be deployed for water distribution from 1st to 6th Avenue from

8:00am to 12 midnight by Mr John and Mr Carr, who could be contacted at 681-2118 and 616-2135, respectively.

For 7th to 12th Avenues, Mr Allicock and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) will deliver water from vehicles GVV 4169 and GJJ 6574 between 8:00am and 12 midnight; and Mr Ward, available at 647-7291, and the Prison Service will deliver water between 13th and 21st Avenue from 8am to 12 midnight.

Although no information was available for Mr Alli-

cock, the contact numbers for one Mr Newton was provided by the water company as 6431942 and 621-2569.

In an effort to safeguard water security for Diamond residents, the company will explore a combination of groundwater and surface water for the two additional wells to be drilled. This is to be done as part of a project with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Van-West Charles expects the first well to be completed within two months.

PM: Increased DHB tolls an investment in national development

PRIME Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Wednesday justified the toll increases at the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB), contending that such a move will pave the way for it to become financially viable.

In an interview conducted by the Department of Public Information (DPI), the Prime Minister said commuters must invest in national development even as he floated the idea of the construction of a modernised harbour bridge across the Demerara River, which will allow for an easier flow of traffic with the assistance of a bypass.

“If you want to enjoy better facilities then initially the commuters must be able to make a deposit on the intention of the Government to have a new bridge,” he said.

Additionally, he alluded to the fact that the Demerara Harbour Bridge has been heavily subsidised. Over a period of five years (20102015) approximately $2.5B was pumped into the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation as a form of Government subsidy.

The Prime Minister said on an annual basis, approximately $400M in taxes is used to subsidise the operations of the aged old bridge.

“You need to place on the table that unless you have a cost recovery you will not be able to maintain this bridge or any other bridge,” Prime Minister Nagamootoo said.

He said if Guyanese desire a better life then they should be willing to pay a little more.

Guyana Chronicle has been reliably informed that Cabinet has approved increases in tolls for motorcycles and cars to cross the Demerara Harbour Bridge, following a proposal made earlier this year by the corporation’s General Manager Rawlston Adams.

Writing in an OP-ED in the Guyana Chronicle, Director of Public Information, Imran Khan, said that motorcyclists, who now pay “a mere $20, would pay $40; while motor car drivers will now pay $200, instead of the $100 they currently pay.”

minibuses and SUVs, which currently pay $200.

“The increases proposed are marginal, and with the affordability to users firmly in mind. These increases, while not onerous by any means, and while immensely favourable to the tolls charged at the Berbice Bridge, will significantly aid in ensuring that the DHB is not dependent on the national treasury for survival,” Khan wrote.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge was commissioned with a lifespan of 25 years, but through repairs and upgrades, this has since been extended by 13 years. Currently, a feasibility study

is being conducted for the construction of a new bridge.

Back in January, the DHBC General Manager, Adams, had reported that some 9,000 vehicles transited the DHB daily in 2015, a 4.8 per cent increase from the previous year; but, overall, incomed earned by the bridge in 2015 declined.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) has reported that while $481M were garnered in revenue from ve-

hicular traffic — an increase of 4.2 per cent over the 2014 revenue — overall, income dipped from $533M in 2014 to $519M in 2015.

Floating at 1.25 miles, the bridge is a strategic link between the eastern and western banks of the Demerara River. When opened in July 1978, the structure was expected to last for only 10 years; but, 37 years later, it is still there.

Gov’t to detail plans for development of creative industries

GUYANA has made no real progress in protecting and promoting cultural expressions, ministerial advisor on culture Ruel Johnson has said, but the government plans to address the deficiencies.

Johnson will later this month make a presentation on Guyana’s performance at a preliminary review of countries which are signatories to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The official review is slated for next year since the quadrennial activity was last held in 2013.

The Convention was adopted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO’s) General Conference on 20 October 2005, during the 33rd session

which was held in Paris.

Guyana became a signatory to the convention in December of 2009.

The main objective of the Convention is to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions. However, the Convention seeks to highlight the fact that cultural creativity has been placed upon all of humanity, and that aside from economical gains, creative diversity reaps plenty cultural and social advantages.

Further, the Convention details that states must also promote “openness to other cultures of the world”. Protective measures are also included in the Convention and international co-operation is encouraged in times of need. This Convention works to strengthen economic growth and cultural acceptance in the international community.

When examined holistically, Johnson noted that Guyana has made little to no progress in most if not all of these areas, which goes counter to the conditions of the convention.

Highlighting one incident where the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedom were violated, the ministerial advisor reflected on the incident in Linden in 2012, when several persons were killed and more than two dozen injured during a protest against electricity rate hikes.

Dealing more specifically with the arts, he recalled another incident in 2013 when then PPP government had banned Calypso music from airwaves across the country. Then minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn went as far as to travel to the state-owned National Communications Network

(NCN) “to find out what the hell was going on.”

“It was slanderous,” the minister said of the particular calypso, adding that “I hold it as my right to go to the station to intervene in an activity which I think impacted me as a citizen and also as a minister.”

Given these occurrences, and numerous others, which have stifled the development of culture and the arts, Johnson said that “I will be frank about the situation in Guyana at the preliminary review because I have to do a narrative.”

He explained that since there has not been much development in this regard, Guyana’s report will be largely aspirational, and will be supported with concrete expressions on the projects and programmes the Government intends to pursue, including the institute of creative arts and copyright legislation.

“So I will be laying out Government’s plan for de-

veloping policies relative to cultural development in Guyana,” he said.

Listing some of the impending implementations to develop the arts and culture industry, Johnson noted that the Department of Culture is currently looking at developing a registry for artistes, systems for concessions for people in the creative arts and marketing for them.

He explained too that efforts will be made to foster closer relations with CARICOM to ensure the free flow of goods and services offered by artistes in the region, which will also open markets for Guyana’s creative minds.

In addition, efforts are also being made to increase representation for Guyana at the Union of South American Nations, since according to him Guyana forms a nexus between South America and the Caribbean – given its geopolitical and historical orientation.

Ali laid to rest (Mirror) MORE than 14,000 mourners from across the globe amassed at the prayer service at Kentucky’s Freedom Hall for a final tribute to the beloved sport star hailed “The Greatest”, Muhammed Ali. Among them are many Muslims, who have travelled the world to see their hero laid to rest at the Jenazah service, which will be broadcast to the world and streamed online.

Today is the first of several ceremonies over the next few days commemorating the extraordinary life of the three-time world boxing champion, who died on Friday age 74 of respiratory problems after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

One fellow Muslim, who shares the same name as the boxing great, travelled from Bangladesh to witness his passing.

Mohammad Ali, who arrived with no hotel reservation, said he met the boxer in the early 1970s and they struck up a friendship based on their shared name.

The Champ visited his home in 1978 and always joked he was his twin brother, he said.

Organisers say the service, or Jenazah prayer, is open to all, but meant especially as a chance for Muslims to say goodbye to a man considered a hero of the faith.

US Muslims hope the service for the Kentucky native will help underscore that Islam is fully part of American life.

“Muhammad planned all of this,” said Imam Zaid Shakir, a prominent US Muslim scholar who will lead Thursday’s prayers.
