KIDS Fest 592 this year is taking on an altogether different theme: “Under the Sea” which Director Natalya Thomas-Small has been using to engage young minds on the importance of preserving their environment.

The event today (Sunday) at the Promenade Gardens in Georgetown will serve to continue Thomas-Small’s idea through seatheme costumes and others that promote using the environment with care.

Kids Fest, which was started in 2017, caters for children within all age ranges and the goal, according to Thomas-Small, is “to provide a participatory, hands-on access to the arts suited for children and the involvement of their family[sic]; creating memories and

growth.”

Thomas-Small had always nurtured a childhood dream of going to Disneyland, and as she noticed a shortage of local family-oriented events, she decided, ‘Why not bring Disney Land to Guyana instead?’ And that she did with the introduction of Kids Fest 592 in 2017, which encompasses music, dance, fashion and pageants, games, and more recently, impromptu speech and spelling Bee competitions.

The usual kids' pageant is the main attraction for this weekend’s event. “This weekend is all about the children having fun; all about the family. We have a lot of activities planned…I’m excited to see what this year brings in terms of the costumes, talents and so

forth,” Thomas-Small shared, noting that the excitement is also a result of some of the big names in the fashion industry participating.

In harmony with the theme for this year, an awareness walk was held with the children last week from the Seawall Bandstand to the Promenade Gardens Bandstand, which also saw the support of the EU Ambassador to Guyana Fernando Ponz Cantó coming out to lend support to the initiative.

The walk helped to bring awareness to the importance of preserving the environment and the children who took part in the pageant and their supporters came out on the seawalls to participate in a clean-up exercise.

“We’ve never had this theme; it’s all about protecting the environment, protecting

the beaches and preserving the sea animals. I would love to see a beautiful, clean environment in Guyana. So in doing so, I engaged the young minds in getting involved in this.

We’re expecting to see really big sea creatures in their costumes, along with other sea-theme costumes,” Thomas-Small said.

Prior to the pandemic in 2020, she had hosted Kids Fest with a ‘wonderland’ theme that included such activities as vending, a bouncy castle, puppet show, pageant and tea party. Mascots were also present from Mr Bunny Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland with her friends.

the promotion of local artists and their talent, so that they can find other ways of earning in times of difficulty.

“There are other factors to be considered. International companies and executives have to engage the artists, photograph their work and engage in advertising work in brochures, so that international bodies and agencies can see your good work,” he explained. “It is all about advertising and engaging folks in the diaspora and further [sic] afield to support the Guyanese Artists.”

Another kite vendor, Trevor Smith, who began his kite- selling career at age 16 and has been involved in kite- selling for 38 years, expressed his enthusiasm that he is happy that the festivity, excitement and joy of Easter have returned, and the fact that people have begun to purchase kites again for Easter Monday.

These are two staple traditions of the Easter holidays and many Guyanese are surely looking forward to enjoying them both this year.

THE Easter holidays are upon us and Guyanese are eagerly looking forward to the traditional Kite-flying activities after a two-year absence due to the global pandemic that prevailed as a result of the novel coronavirus. And while those physical activities may have been missed, there are some other traditions that have remained near and dear to our hearts, such as the preparation of hot cross buns- a staple of the Easter holidays.

The Pepperpot Magazine spoke with Hazel Chance, who over the past 26 years has specialised in making cross buns every year at Easter.

Chance noted some of the challenges that she has experienced in making cross buns. She noted during her interview that the thing that

makes her recipe unique is her “secret ingredient.”

“You wouldn’t find my recipe anywhere else, because it is mine, my signature Arein’s Delight and Catering Services,” Chance confidentially told the Pepperpot Magazine.

It is during this time that cross buns are usually and more widespread, simply because of its significance and meaning to Christians, Chance noted.

While of the makers of Cross Buns, the Cross is very visible, for Chance, the Cross is situated at the top of the bun.

Now with most of the restrictions of the pandemic lifted locally, Guyanese are also eagerly looking forward to kite-flying activities during the Easter season The Pepperpot Magazine spoke with Morris Prince, a

prominent kite vendor, who has been involved in the making of Kites for the past 35 years.

Prince’s longstanding practice and his usual location at Camp Street this time of year, has earned him multiple features in the Pepperpot Magazine over the years.

Over the past two years, the pandemic had severely hindered his sales, this year, he is optimistic about this changing. When it comes to his craft, he is clearly knowledgeable and shared some of the important aspects of kite-making.

Young entrepreneur making plans to grow her small business - says consistency is key

WHAT started as a hobby for Shalena Callender has turned into a growing small business that gives her a chance to earn some extra cash, while at the same time being able to do what she loves.

Shalena has always been into craft. She’d buy random supplies whenever she goes to the mall and keep them, or she’d use the beads off of an old necklace to create something new and beautiful.

“For the longest while, I have always been into craft.

I am always collecting beads or odd ends and keeping it and making stuff. If a necklace bursts, I would put the beads aside or if I go shopping, I am always looking for craft items. I would buy random stuff and put them aside; clips, hooks, beads, strings,” she shared in an interview with Pepperpot Magazine.

Her interest was boosted while doing craft with the kids in her church at Timehri.

“For quite a while, we did it as craft activities. I started selling stuff within the church; I would do pop-up shops and then use some of the funds to go back to the youth ministry.

business, to do her printing or to help her personalise the items that people order from her.

To grow the business, Shelli’s Handmade, even further, she started marketing her stuff online, making her hobby more of a business to her now. Among the items she does are earrings, bracelets, gift sets, keyrings, tokens for events, bookmarkers, pens, and masks.

One of the things she especially likes to do is to partner with fellow small-business owners to get things done. For example, she would collaborate with Outside the Box, another small

She plans to develop it further by adding all her products, pricing and focusing a lot more on the online marketing aspect of things.

“Online reaches a larger range of customers. For instance, I am in Timehri, way out of central Georgetown, yet most of my customers are out of my area. Marketing online helps me to reach all parts of the country. I’ve had instances where I had to do deliveries all the way to

The culture here in Guyana, though, when it comes to online buying and payments, makes it difficult for Shalena and many others who’d prefer to transact all their business online. “Even though you do the marketing online, you still have that issue of collecting payment. Persons are still not into paying online,” she said. On some occasions, customers make their payments via MMG. Shalena, who likes to do

lots of “one of a kind pieces,” has also found that not many people are into craft locally. “You don’t have a lot of persons investing in the craft business; you would find cosmetics stores having a way better customer base.

But being consistent always helps; always trying to market the product whenever you get an opportunity.”

Shalena, who works fulltime in the oil-and-gas industry as an HR specialist with Eldorado Offshore, wants to someday be able to have her own space for the business.

At the moment, she is renting two shelves at the Me Time Store in Tuschen, and at the Elysian Store on Duncan Street.

She was selected to participate in the AccelerateHer programme recently with the Centre for Local Business Development, which helped her greatly to develop her business plan and network with other business owners. For the year so far, she has participated in the Women in Business expo at the Pegasus and the Retro Movie Night Flea Market.

GUYANA-BORN Derek Devaram Dabee has long been known for his volunteerism in the community and has worked with a wide variety of organisations and groups, including the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre, the Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development and has poured his time and energy into the areas and issues about which he is passionate.

A recipient of the City of Winnipeg Outstanding Volunteer Award for Recreation, Dabee is a long-time advocate for equity and diversity, having served on both the City of Winnipeg Task Force on Equity and Diversity and the Civil Service Equity Employment Policy Committee. Derek has also worked tirelessly on local and provincial levels, promoting sports, human rights, and culture within the Caribbean community.

However, for many Winnipeggers, Derek is perhaps best known as the Founding President of the Burton Cummings Community Centre and as a member of the Maples Community Centre Board who helped spearhead the first youth cricket pitch in the Seven Oaks Area.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Pepperpot from his home in Manitoba, Dabee stressed that as a School Board Trustee his focus is mainly on the educational needs of students and families in the Seven Oaks School Division, with a particular eye on building new schools, recreation, and sports facilities. He looks forward to helping the division explore the learning opportunities offered by new technologies and providing additional support for teachers as they prepare young people for the challenges ahead.

According to Derek, supporting students as they explore their education and their own connections to the community will ultimately bring people together and make the entire Seven Oaks School Division stronger.

Dabee decided to run for a seat on the Seven Oaks School Division Board of Trustees when he heard that a long-time Trustee was retiring, making history as the first Guyanese /West Indian to be elected on a Manitoba School Board. He saw it not only as an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of the public school system, but also as a chance to give back to the larger Seven Oaks community. He is currently in his third four-year term as a School Board Trustee.

Dabee, along with the nine-member Seven Oaks Board of Trustees, govern the fastest growing School District in the province with a budget of Canadian $102 million.

Apart from being a School Board Trustee, Dabee was also past Chair, Chief union negotiator, Policy and Budget committees. He led the equity employment and Anti- Racism Pol-

icy, was head of the first Canada Filipino Bilingual programme in public schools and led the Divisional Diwali and the Graduation PoW-Wow Indigenous celebrations policy.

Dabee is also the representative on the Seven Oaks School Division to the City Indigenous Accord, Community Reporter since 2011 with the Winnipeg Free Press, a member of the Committee (volunteered) on Employment Equity and Diversity Policies legislation (Adopted 1997) and the lead Derek Dabee member City of Winnipeg Equity and Diversity Policy- Task Force.

He also served as Chairperson of the Manitoba Disaster Assistance Appeal Board for three years and had the unique distinction of being the first person of colour to attain that position.

Among the other areas Dabee was associated with on a voluntary basis were: Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development, Adolescent Treatment Centre, the University of Manitoba (five years study of active adults,

Winnipeg Arts Council, president Maples Community Centre, president Caribbean Health Info Academy, founding president Burton Cummings Community Centre, founding member: Lions Cricket Club, founding Member City of Winnipeg- North Recreation Association, lead volunteer r( (renovations) at the Maples/Elwick Community Centre, long-time senior volunteer - Philippine Basketball Association and, Manitoba cricket and tennis associations.

Dabbie also assisted in establishing the Council of Caribbean Centre, Filipino Centre, and Hindu Seniors Centre, the Maples Seniors Centre and successfully led or assisted in lobbying or advocating for: eight new schools, four community centres, six cricket pitches, 16 tennis courts, five ice hockey rinks, 10 basketball courts and four baseball fields.

After serving the Manitoba Civil Service for 27 years, Derek became the first Caribbean person to be elected as a School Trustee, where 95 per cent of the voters are none Guyanese.

Derek pointed out that he migrated to Canada to study and with the intention of returning to his homeland, but for several reasons, decided to change his original plan. He, however, continued his political involvement, advocacy and volunteer services in Winnipeg.

Despite these involvements, Dabee was still reaching out to Guyana and, along with his friends and family, organised book ship-

ments to high schools and to the Georgetown Public Free Library, raising funds to build cricket pitches, mandirs and churches in Guyana.

Dabbie’s appreciations awards include: City of Winnipeg - Volunteer of the Year Award – Recreation Caribbean Association.

- Millennium Award - Community Service, Guyanese Association of Manitoba Lifetime Award, Manitoba Cricket Association Builder- Lifetime Award, Mahatma Gandhi Centre - Community Service. Filipino Centre Distinguished Volunteer Award and Sikh Community/Kabaddi Volunteer Award.

Dabee grew up in Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, Guyana. He attended Friendship Government School, East Coast Demerara and Hindu College. In 1773 Derek enrolled at the University of Manitoba. He also studied at the University of Winnipeg.

Married to Sandy, they have two grown children. Derek’s parents were noted community leaders in the Vigilance/Strasphey Village where the family sustained a network of community support (small financial support) to a number of community members.

While Derek’s professional career is noteworthy, his advocacy, community leadership and volunteerism are certainly celebrated and inspiring, especially to new Canadians in Canada. He distinguished himself as one SEE PAGE XIX

This week the Pepperpot Magazine visited two locations in the Essequibo River. The team journeyed over land and water to visit locals of Fort Island and Bonasika Creek, a tributary of the Essequibo River to highlight the way of life of the people.

Fort Island is located at the mouth of the Essequibo River. It is on the right bank and it is home to 95 residents of mixed ethnicities, whose main source of income revolves around farming, poultry, fishing, cattle and livestock-rearing.

The people are friendly and welcoming and recently benefitted from a brand new ferry stelling which is yet to be opened.

The island has a nursery and primary school housed in one building, a Coast Guard base, a health centre, a roadside shop, one church, an up-and-coming resort and bar, Fort Zeelandia and the Dutch museum.

It is a tourist island and a bird-watching paradise, which is full of wildlife and amazing places to visit.

It takes about 15 minutes via boat from the Hubu Koker to Fort Island. The boat ride via a 40 horsepower engine is relatively smooth when the tide is favourable during the early-morning period.

Upon arriving, Fort Island visitors can visit the historical sites which are managed by the National Trust and take a brisk walk around the island to interact with villagers.

The people recently have gained access to the internet on the island via a private internet provider and some have benefitted from solar lights.

There is no electricity or potable water supply at Fort Island. There is cellphone reception, but it is often not reliable.

Bibi Catega, the farmer Among the locals is Bibi Catega, a farmer who also rears layer chickens by the dozens and some cows.

The 58-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that she is from Liberty Island, Essequibo River, but later relocated to Gluck Island due to hardship faced by the family.

She added that they also moved to Rock Island and later to Manaka, and she is from a family of farmers who worked the land to

“We came to Fort Island, and we have a much better life because we started to farm, and I used to make furniture using a manual hand saw, mind cows, fish, rear layers and sell the eggs and later bought some ducks, all in a bid to earn,” she said.

Catega and her husband have their farm right on Fort Island, and they would go to the Hubu Koker to sell their produce whenever they have a harvest of crops.

She stated that they utilise a section of the vacant land to rear their cows.

Catega noted that they have access to healthcare and other facilities, which are not very far away in the event of an emergency.

She pointed out that they also have a kind health worker on the island, one you can call on at any time, whether it is day or night, to assist medically.

Catega is pleased about the recent development on the island, which is a spanking

new ferry stelling, but would also welcome a drainage upgrade to prevent flooding on the island and to save their crops.

She reported that they need more drainage canals to access their farm to bring out produce that is bulky and difficult to carry manually, such as plantains and bananas.

“Due to age and illness, I cannot fetch the plantains like before, so it is challenging at times to get the produce out to sell,” she said.

They have crops of lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines, corn and cash crops.

FULFILLING a dream between two brothers has become the motivating factor in establishing a resort at Fort Island, Essequibo River.

For Gordon Fitzpatrick Eytle and his sibling, who are originally from Fort Island, returned to their home village after living in England and are working towards a resort

that is almost complete.

The 74-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that his family is from the island, but he went to school in the city and would return when he can.

At age 16, he migrated to England and returned in 2003. They had some lands on the island, and an idea was birthed for a resort after

visitors kept making the request.

Eytle stated that he would be at the resort and has a house on the mainland.

While living in England, he joined the British Army and served for nine years, after which he began working with a food company as a maintenance engineer.

that it took them a few years to get the project of building the resort started, but they are halfway there.

The bar section is completed, and it is opened to the public, while landscaping works are expected to commence when the weather is favourable.

They have five one-bedroom cottages, but six more one-bedroom apartments will be constructed at another location on the island.

Eytle disclosed that it will be finished in three months’ time and they will be open for business once everything goes as per schedule.

He added that Fort Island Resort will cater for both locals and foreign visitors and it is a cosy place that is quite beautiful, with a setting in flowers and plants with neat, brightly coloured wooden cottages for that added comfort.

Eytle stated that by the end of May they are hoping to complete the landscaping aspect of the work, and they are constantly encouraged to finish because people keep asking when they will be opening.

“It is lovely here, with the river

in the picture. It is a good place to live and have a quiet way of life,’ he said.

The Fort Island resident stated that the island isn’t crowded and it is a safe place where you can hear the birds sing and the sounds of the wildlife in the background.

“The people here are familiar with each other and there are no strangers here, so being here brings back memories of my family life when I was a child, and I love it here. It is home for me,” he said.

The Fort Island Resort Bar is a good hang-out spot which is under a huge benab outfitted with chairs and tables.

It has nibbi furniture, as well as wooden and tree trunks which serve as stools.

MAHINDRANAUTH Gaya, called “Blackboy,” does his part in serving his community by providing a free boat service for the schoolchildren, and it is his way of giving back to society through simple means.

He is originally from Canal #1 Polder, West Bank Demerara and relocated to Bonasika Creek when he was only 14 years old.

Gaya came from a family of farmers and has been a farmer most of his life. Even today, he is still at it, but he is not doing farming on as large a scale as before, due to ill health, coupled with age.

He told the Pepperpot Magazine that he is a security guard attached to the Bonasika Creek Health Centre.

Gaya added that Bonasika Creek is divided into Upper and Lower. It has two schools, both primary, no secondary and two health centres.

The father of two stated that both his sons died, and he was left with six grandchildren. Two minors

are still with him.

In his spare time, he has a small farm behind his house, cultivating plantains, bananas, citrus, pumpkins, ground provisions and pineapples. He sells his produce at Parika.

Gaya recalled that back in the day, he had six employees working on the farm as labourers and he had two houses for them, but he had to let them go due to many circumstances.

He pointed out that Bonasika Creek was once a very populated place, but due to schooling at the secondary level, a lot of people left and relocated.

Speaking about his volunteer work in the village, Gaya stated that on school days, he would pick up six children from their respective homes and take them to school and would also do the same from school to their homes after classes, free of charge.

Gaya uses his own speedboat and gasoline and doesn’t receive any form of payment.

Gaya has been a security guard for the past eight years with no salary increase.

At 72 years old, Gaya still has a burst of energy like a teenager, and beside his wife, they make an enterprising couple despite ill health and other challenges.

Chandroutie Gaya Meanwhile, Gaya’s wife, Chandroutie is a housewife/a shop owner and a Neighbourhood Police attached to the Bonasika Creek Police Station.

She told the Pepperpot Magazine that at 16 years old she came to Bonasika creek to live with her family and years later got married to Mahindranauth Gaya and they have two children.

Gaya is originally from Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, but her father went to work at Bonasika Creek on farms as a labourer.

Gaya reported that she used to do domestic work to assist in bringing in an income to the home, and they were tasked with taking care of four grandchildren left behind by their dead son.

She explained that at age 32, her son died, and the other one passed on at 26 and it had been difficult to cope, but they tried their best to recover from the loss of their loved ones.

FROM a humble life in Region One, Mabaruma, North West District and from a large family of eight siblings, from paddling to school and farming today, Pretty Debideen has upgraded her life as the Community Health Worker, a registered nurse at Fort Island, Essequibo River.

Debideen grew up in the Aruka River and came to Fort Island to assist her mother, who was the Medex there.

She often volunteered in her free time and became drawn to the profession.

At that time one of her siblings, a sister, was living on the island and at a young age began reaching out to people, assisting them in whatever way she could.

It was then she realised she could do so much for people by becoming a nurse and she was propelled into achieving her dreams when her mother passed away in 2007.

She used to catch fish and do all kinds of things to earn

as a single mother of six. She became qualified as a nurse and it was then her life began changing for the better.

“I knew I had to challenge myself to follow in my mom’s footsteps because I saw how she helped people and I wanted to do the same.

Serving the community is a great responsibility,” she said.

Debideen told the Pepperpot Magazine that education paved a way for her and with that in hand, she managed to provide for her children.

It was in 2012 that she took up the position of Community Health Worker for Fort Island and the neighbouring islands.

Debideen added that she has crafted herself as a role model and over the years, she has achieved a lot as a community leader and volunteer who is qualified as a beautician.

Speaking in terms of development on the island, she related that they have seen a lot of progress in which the

He is insistent on upkeeping the family tradition of farming despite challenges. He is still at it, doing what he must to earn.

The 47-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that he is originally from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, but grew up in Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River.

He recalled his father was a farmer and had a launch (boat) and he used that to transport his produce from the farm to the market.

At 19 years old, his father gifted him some farmlands and he started farming on his own as an adult.

Ramcharran stated that his parents used to live and farm at Mole Island, which is across the creek from his house, and they later relocated to Bonasika Creek, rearing cows and farming.

He stated that he is from a family of nine siblings.

“There is a great need for a secondary school here because there are a lot of school-aged children and due to difficulties in getting to secondary schools on the West Coast/Parika as such, we have a lot of drop-outs,” he said.

Ramcharran added that after his father advanced in age and subsequently passed away, he inherited the farmlands and continued in good stride to work the land.

“According to the tide, you have to get up and start

the journey at midnight to get to Parika to sell the produce, and it is a difficult task at times. This takes place every week on Thursday for Friday morning market,” he said.

The framer explained that before his father passed away, he supported him for 10 years, and after all his siblings left for greener pastures, he remained to continue the farming.

Ramcharran has three transported plots behind his house at Bonasika Creek, and he cultivates watermelons, pumpkins, limes, apple bananas, seasoning peppers and he recently started a SEE PAGE XI

He related that the cost of living in that riverine community is high due to the increase in food prices, gas, chemicals for plants, and fertilizers.

She has a shop, selling every little thing at cost price to meet the needs of people in her community.

Bookhan stated that she is from Cornelia Ida, West

Coast Demerara and at age 10 years old she relocated to Bonasika Creek with her family.

The 59-year-old is the mother of two sons, both of

whom died tragically. The youngest was killed in a road accident and the eldest was fatally shot during an armed robbery while working in the interior.

She is married to Sargie Bookhan, a farmer, who has crops of pumpkins, limes, apple bananas and some other cash crops.

That day, like any other, he was not at home and was away on his farm tending to crops.

“At a young age, I came here to live so I got used to the simple way of life here and even if I go away for a few days, within two days I have to return because this is home for me and I love it here; the quietness of the creek, the cool, black water and the serenity is all that is

needed,” she said.

Her shop is the place where village meetings and other gatherings take place because of the location and convenience. It is referred to as the ‘place for everyone,’ Bookhan’s husband would sell his produce at Parika, the central hub of businesses and they would buy goods and return home via their speedboat.

Contributing to society in... such, there is a need for a better drainage system and he desperately needs a tiller for his crops.

Bonasika Creek was one of the places that was hard hit by the last flood which destroyed crops, but they benefitted from a flood-relief cash grant by the administration and they are thankful.

Bookhan is a very kind woman who does her part in the community by providing employment for the women; she employs them as domestic workers for a few days per week.

“I know the struggles of the people here, most are very poor and the only job here is farming, which is challenging and the people fish and do all kinds of work to earn and I would assist them in anyway necessary,” she said.

Bookhan added that most people in Bonasika Creek are related by blood and there are no strangers, except for some newcomers, Amerindians and some Spanish people, living in small makeshift huts along the bank of the creek.

Mary Edwards Meanwhile, Mary Edwards is a resident of Bonasika Creek and she is employed as a domestic worker, whose husband suffered a broken hand and is unable to work.

The mother of three told the Pepperpot Mag-

azine that she is from the Pomeroon River, but came to Bonasika Creek to reside with her family when she was 10 years old.

She explained that when things were hard in the Pomeroon her dad came to Bonasika Creek in search of work as a labourer on farms.

Edwards added that after their mother passed away, she had to care for her five siblings, all of whom have returned to the Pomeroon River.

She stated that life is not as it should be economically, but they are trying to earn because of the schoolage children they have, securing their education is a top priority.

Edwards is married to local, Zamal Bashir, who had an accident and suffered a broken hand and cannot work. She has stepped in to bring in an income to the home until he can return to work.

“Our son is also working to help out in the home, and my daughters would come with me to assist in chores when I am working,” she said.

Edwards and her husband have a small farm and proceeds from that is for the upkeep of the home and other expenses.

She lives four houses away from Aunty Bibi’s residence and it is a close place to earn within the riverine community.

“It is a lovely place to live as you can see my house is right on the bank overlooking the creek and the air is fresh and life is simple. It takes hard labour to earn and one must contend with just farming as their livelihood,” he said.

that farmers need some assistance in terms of dredging and an upgrade in the drainage network to have a good production of crops.

He reported that Bonasika Creek was one of the places that was hard-hit by the flood and they had to re-start planting all over again.

The youths came from the island and its environs and it was geared towards empowering them to establish their own small businesses to earn right from their homes.

She has a small beauty salon at her home and it is a part-time venture.

Debideen is also a volunteer with a group and she functions as a counsellor, who represents the people by highlighting their difficulties, being their voices and getting them the help they need.

She does home visits and has delivered 20 babies in emergency cases where the mothers could not reach a

hospital, but it is advisable to get to the nearest hospital since home deliveries are not encouraged by the Ministry of Health.

Debideen added that Fort Island is going places because they have started a Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) group on the island and they have been engaged in meaningful activities, that is, the youths.

“We don’t feel left out here because we have the support of the administration and the region. Even though development has been slow, it is still happening to improve the lives of the people on the island,” she said.

Zakir Mohamed Omar Meanwhile, her husband, Zakir Mohamed Omar told the Pepperpot Magazine that he is originally from Leguan Island, Essequibo River, but began living at Fort Island when he was just 14 years old.

He has been a farmer all his life and is from a long line of farmers. He has been really active with his own farm for 40 years.

Omar is from a family of five sisters and one brother.

Today, three sisters are overseas, two sisters live in Guyana as well as his only brother.

His father passed away, but his mother is still alive and in her late 80s.

Omar disclosed that he came to live at Fort Island with his stepfather and mother and they settled there because they can earn as farmers.

In his younger days, Omar had a government job and did farming on a part-time basis.

After 38 years of marriage, they have three daughters and one son, four of whom are leading their own lives off the island.

They are only responsible for one school-age daughter.

She would also assist on the farm from time to time.

Omar disclosed that when they have a good harvest, he would employ a few labourers to assist on the farm, but recently, his crops have been plagued by pests.

He revealed that in the rainy season bats have been killing his cows; last year he lost 18 cows as a result of bat bites.

Omar added that wild animals have been attacking his cows too.

He added that at times, farming is difficult due to the increase in prices for drugs and fertilisers, and market prices also fluctuate for produce.

“Despite hardships, I can say I have a quiet, hardworking way of life here where it is peaceful, safe and quiet,” he said.

Omar and his wife, Catega have a lovely modest home that is well-kept, and they have a lot of plants, flowers, trees and all kinds of fruits and vegetables in their yards.

They are obsessed in a good way about plants and they have a lot of cacti too.

IN reviewing Compton Dick, the late head architect of the Ministry of Housing, we must recognise the need for respect for logic and reassessing of ideas before judgement, based on what we think we know. Incidentally, I have learnt through the first article, from a colleague that Compton was fired, losing all of his benefits, thus an explanation of how he deteriorated prior to his demise.

The essence, however, is his contribution to the discussion on the architectural aesthetics of Georgetown and oncoming housing schemes, which in many cases merely exploit the real and serious need for housing by providing horrid accommodations. But first, I think we should understand that the concept of ‘Victorian Architecture ´ should be erased from architectural discussions as a reference definition instead, the term “Colonial Period” would be more on the ball for the simple reason that the Queen Lady never commissioned any particular building designs, the term is purely a British custom of attributing titles to historical periods, using the name of current royals. Any exploration on the 'net' or through books will lead to the architecture in the Victorian period as different from anything done here, I have not done it, but I intend to explore Castellani, who is regarded as a senior architect of our 19th-century colonial buildings; he, If my memory serves me correctly, was Italian. Exploring an internet post- Victorian period architecture is credited to influences from Egypt and the Orient.

I must return to the short passing document Compton Dick left with me on his thoughts about housing schemes in Guyana; I must actually identify the source of the following analogy that Compton drew a perspective from; Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian mystic, architect, social reformer and writer. Steiner’s era had tense traffic of European mystics, prophets and the like, but I do agree with the following quote

by Compton, as it distinguishes itself from any modern period, but is embedded in human architectural expressions from our earliest collective periods. As best as I can interpret Compton’s calligraphy as follows, “A survey of history recalls that certain styles in architecture, or certain types of architecture, have been associated with certain forms of government. Indeed, politics have, at times, had a strong influence on architecture. Steiner was not an architect, but he did design buildings and formulated a design philosophy.

Did this philosophy have political connotations? These are the premises…like man, architecture stands between earth and the cosmos, belonging to both, created by both, and hence should express both. Life is a period of development and physical unfolding which should be reflected in architecture, using the metamorphosis theme.” This was not a hifalutin term implied by Compton because if we pay attention, from Pyramids to Temples, to Stonehenge, even forcing an understanding through Idols and art, all revolve around the human effort to understand through our mystery systems, the language of consultation between the cosmos and the connection to nature that sustains life. Compton inherited a book on Albert Speer from me. It was actually exchanged for a book he had. The after-'Housing' years were not cohesive with the brethren I had come to know before. He never spoke about what I learned a few days ago. I had inherited the weights after Mohan and his family left these shores. A few times, Compton would show up on Church Street, where I lived, to exercise, often bringing a woman. Still, there was an air of disconnect that I only now understand. The disconnect was existing between the earth that was his manifest self, and the cosmos that sustained him. None of us understood until SEE PAGE XIX

Should Compton had been understood, the example set would have eclipsed the dismal and confusing constructs we now have. We are still dressing up imitation Christmas trees with fake snow. In closing, I wish to repeat a theme I wrote about before, that the future of Guyana will most likely be grounded in ‘Home Businesses.' Do the designs exist with the material suggested in this article for comfort? If they do, I missed them, otherwise, we will continue the mimicry of mediocrity towards continued discomfort.

REFLECT, Relax,Rejuvenate and Rejoice are some words that describe last weekend's retreat with some of the exhibitors and their families at Isika. This place is extra special to me. I intentionally arrived early before the others because I needed my dose of meditation under the palm trees. This space is so calming. It detoxes my mind and gives clarity on ideas. I decided I would camp out in this space alone to write my first fiction book soon.

Stanley Ming continues to be a guiding light for many small businesses through mentorship and leadership. My mentor John Maxwell says, “leadership is influence nothing more, nothing less,” but I like the definition better from my other mentor Myles Munroe, “Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration, motivated by passion generated by vision produced by conviction, ignited by purpose.”

We often discuss purpose in the EXPO Family circle.

It is important to discover why we’re created because that assists us to live a fulfilled life. I felt the excitement as the exhibitors and their families came out of the vehicles. Only a few of them had this experience with me last year. I’m happy we decided to invite family and staff because it is a great

atmosphere to create stronger bonds. Kitta Cave shared that this expo made her relationship with her sister even stronger.

I love the article Mr Adams from Stabroek did on the EXPO because he captured the true essence of the part people often miss. I am sharing his first paragraph with you: “It was a landmark moment in the leadership role which local fashion icon and business mentor Sonia Noel plays in the lives of emerging entrepreneurially-bent[sic] women over several years. The curtain had finally fallen on this year’s Women in Business event, one of Ms. Noel’s brainchildren, designed to provide opportunities for emerging women-led businesses to parade their creations on what, for most of them, are bigger than the accustomed stage; to expand their horizons with regard to the creation and incremental growth of self-sustaining entrepreneurial pursuits. There is, unquestionably, evidence that the relationships are working.”

But her fears were confirmed when she saw the many family members there, crying, fear on their faces.

She rushed into the ICU, and she stood there for a few moments, numb with fear, as she looked at his unconscious state.

“What is his prognosis?”

She finally managed to ask the doctors in attendance.

“He has severe head injuries. It doesn’t look good.” one of the doctors said.

I imagine relaxing in a hammock on a beautiful windy and Sunny Saturday with great food,company and receiving these valuable nuggets you can implement immediately to better you and your business. OF all the types of writing I have engaged in, column- writing provides one of the biggest challenges due to the discipline it requires. As a columnist, you must be consistent in your submissions and prolific in your ideas; that is no simple task. Consider the columnist who has upheld their space in a weekly publication for several years. In most cases, they would have done so by contributing a new, full-length, 800word piece 52 weeks a year. Many of these persons have existing careers and must still find the time to write, and they do. This is the case for many of the current Pepperpot columnists- and columnists in other newspapersand for that commitment, they must be applauded. From time to time, I receive queries from persons interested in starting a column.

And many times, I can honestly say that I do not believe that they are ready to do so. Not because of an inability to write or a lack of ideas, but because of an underestimation of what it really takes. So, I thought it fitting to look at some important aspects of the column for persons who are curious about venturing into that realm of writing. Here goes!

What is the essence of a column?

A column provides the unique opportunity in journalism to invoke opinion into topical matters. But in a world of social media where opinion reigns, column-writing must differentiate itself from this ever-changing landscape. Good columnists provide their opinion from a level of au-

thority and can do so by providing an almost endless range of topics to sustain their column.

An important point to note is sustainability.

Many persons feel strongly about a matter and can derive a few pieces out of that feeling. But too often, their columns fizzle out weeks or months later. Before I started this column, I made a list of at least 25 topics to ensure that I had a wide enough range of ideas to develop. Then I wrote several articles ahead of time to stay ahead of myself. Similarly, when new columnists approach me, I ask for up to 10 articles beforehand to ensure that they have enough ideas and the commitment to continue. It also serves as a test as to whether they are ready for the long road ahead.

English journalist and columnist with The Guardian, Suzanne Moore, described good columns as “an antenna that has just picked up the background noise.”

I believe that succinctly describes the essence of a column. Through authentic ideas, they must be able to discuss topical matters in a way that brings the things that we are all wondering or thinking about to the fore.

GOOD customer service-or rather the lack of it—is an ongoing issue that seems to plague businesses in Guyana.

As an entrepreneur with a blossoming business myself, I deeply understand why it’s necessary and essential to invest in good customer service for your customers and clients. Your resources used to target good customer service are a direct link to your customers (people who spend their money on your product or service). As such, the resources you invest in customer service are important, if not the most important, resources towards achieving success for your business. Some may argue that every aspect of your business is just as important. So, why then should you even prioritise customer service over other aspects of the said business? Well, good customer service equates to satisfied and happy customers. Satisfied and happy customers will then lead you to more growth which ultimately means more profit for your business. Your product may be top tier, your marketing might be unlike no other, and your business model may be innovative, but if your customer service sucks—none of those mean anything. You can’t make money or grow your business without the help of your customers. Who will you sell to in order to generate profit if you have no customers— and loyal customers, at that?

I decided to take the time to write about why customer service is important because I’ve noticed that many micro and macro businesses in Guyana invest in little to no customer service. To invest and provide good customer service means to support your customers and clients before and after they would’ve purchased or used your goods and services. From your first interaction to your very last,it should be enjoyable and pleasant for the customer. In the past, customers would most likely prefer to purchase goods and services from a business that has the least expensive selling price. These days in Guyana, as lifestyles change and people become more sensitised to emotions and thoughts—they would prefer a business that offers a better experience, rather than someone who simply sells the cheapest goods and services. You see, it’s not only about what you have to offer—it’s mostly about how you offer it. I hate to be in an establishment through which I’m scared to express my dissatisfaction or honesty about the services or goods being provided. In other words, some Guyanese business owners would rather “cuss out” a customer or down-talk them rather than effectively diffuse a conflict. These skills are necessary for good customer service representation. Not only is good customer service representation needed in private businesses, but also in all government offices and institutions as well. I hate to be at the receiving end of a clerk or receptionist at any government office when it seems as if they are having a bad day (and perhaps they have many bad days). It’s an unpleasant experience and feeling.

It ultimately discourages you from accessing certain services and goods—unless it’s an absolute necessity.

A popular phrase used to understand why customer service is essential is, “it’s cheaper to keep existing customers than to find new ones.” That simplifies the concept of retention of customers. Customer retention entails you keeping your current customer base satisfied, as this provides for a more stable profit and success rate. Good customer service also helps to promote your business in a positive light. This increases positive brand awareness. As Douglas Adams said, “To give real service, you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” As Guyanese rapidly try to invest in businesses in our booming economy, I do hope that they place much emphasis on customer service representation. It is much needed in existing business establishments as well.

ENOUGH lecturing, you say – I floss properly, and I will eat a balanced diet. I will even give up my nightly chocolate bar while I watch TV. But what about the five cavities I now have? You say – I know that you as a dentist are only trying to help, but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, I am the one who has to get into that dental chair, and it is my

mouth you will be shooting up with local anaesthetic and how I hate that needle! Well, patients, you do have a choice.

If the dentist asks the patient to choose between, say two types of filling materials, should the final decision rest solely with the dentist? Patients should make some practical choices when it comes to restorative dentistry.

Start thinking in at least semi-professional terms. Your dentist does not call the work he does on your cavities “fillings,” he calls it “restoring.” His job is to restore form and function. Anybody can be taught in a relatively short period to fill a hole, even in a tooth, after the dentist drills it out, cleans it up and dresses it ready to build. But only a dentist

is taught how to restore form and function properly.

Ask your dentist about “comfort linings.” These are linings or bases, usually medicated, placed under restorations to keep teeth from being sensitive to cold or heat, especially cold. If the restoration is made out of silver amalgam, it will certainly conduct temperature changes in the tooth.

If the restoration is quartz composite, the chemicals can irritate the pulp or nerve, as you call it. The comfort liner acts as an insulator cushion and medicated layer, protecting against pressure, chemical irritation, or temperature changes – all of which add up to comfort.

affirmation of the truth of the Christian message and the ascension or final departure of the Lord

from the Earth and the milieu of mortal life. In the Guyanese Tradition, Good Friday, Holy Saturday,

Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are bound in close catenation, each dependent on the other for meaning,

unlike in some other traditions where focus is wholly on Sunday when the Lord conquered death and arose from the dead. Thus, Guyanese speak of the Easter Season.

Good Friday (or God's Friday) is the day when Jesus was crucified; Holy Saturday is a day of anxious waiting for the Resurrection; Easter Sunday is the day of victory when the Lord triumphantly conquers Death and is Resurrected; and Easter Monday is purely celebratory. Before we go into detail about how each day of the Season was commemorated in Guyana, we would like at this point to reject the nonsensical attempt to link Easter with the old Teutonic religions. When the Anglo-Saxons adopted the Christian religion, they used the name of one of their deities, Eostre, whose attributes bore some resemblance to Easter, to describe that Holy Day. In several Latin languages, Easter is known as Pascal but the celebration is the same everywhere in the Christian world. Further, to try to link Easter with the old Teutonic religions is analogous to saying that since, in the English Language, the days of the week are named after Teutonic deities, English speakers pay obeisance to or worship those deities, for example, Thor on Thursday or Woden (Odin) on Wednesday!

Good Friday is the most solemn and sad day in the Guyanese calendar. No music or dancing, or any commercial activity is permitted.

Many people fast on this day. Church services are the only public activity. In the mainstream Churches such as the Catholic and Anglican, the services take the form of verbal, dramatic presentations of the persecution, sufferings and crucifixion of Lord Jesus with the Stations of the Cross also depicted on the walls. Holy Saturday is spent in prayer and in anxiously awaiting the Resurrection of the Lord.

Then on Sunday, Jesus is miraculously Resurrected, walks among his disciples who touched his body and

Thomas, to be absolutely certain he was seeing Jesus, placed his finger in the wounds. All Churches hold joyous Easter services celebrating the Resurrection, and the mainstream churches are decorated and the priests wear special vestments. Finally comes Easter Monday.

Easter Monday is a time of quiet celebration, family lunches, visiting friends, sponge cakes in contrast to the black cakes of Christmas, ginger beer and above all, ubiquitous kite- flying and picnicking. Kite-flying was believed to have originated in celebration of the ascension. For the last three years, kite-flying disappeared, largely because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and it is hoped that there will be a vigorous resuscitation this year, though the lockdown was lifted only a short while ago.

In Guyana, unlike in Europe, Asia and Africa, the holy days of the three national religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam, are celebrated to a greater or lesser degree by adherents of all three faiths because it is generally accepted that all religions lead to God. Some festivals such as Diwali and Christmas have a universal following but holy days more intimately connected to their respective faiths like Easter, are less celebrated by all. Easter is, however, gradually having more and more Hindus and Muslims understanding its story, and more are finding no barrier against some participation. Jesus, for example, is a Prophet of Islam and Hindus find no difficulty in accepting the Virgin birth of Jesus being an incarnation or Outar of God or Jesus being killed and resurrected.

With the new ethos ushered in by the oil-and-gas industry and the greater integration of Guyanese society, all groups seem ready to participate in Easter and help to preserve and resuscitate its customs.

May the great spiritual teachings of Easter touch all Guyanese, and may all enjoy a happy and peaceful Easter Season!

TWO very saddening issues dominated news reports this past week: the brutality of a businessman against his daughter (and, based on reports, other family members) over several years and the fatal stabbing of Savitri Raj- a mother of three.

In the former case, thankfully, the young, brave woman has been able to secure a lifetime protection order from the court. The businessman has been ordered to keep 1,000 feet away from the young woman, though she can have the order changed if she desires.

It was quite unsettling listening to this man defend his actions during an interview with a local social media commentator. And it was quite unsettling seeing the social defence of this man from no less a person than his son, who has reportedly witnessed his abuse for years.

But what was most interesting, for me, were his attempts at victim-blaming his daughter. It was unbelievable just how this man felt empowered enough to speak to a live audience, in front of his family, about his brutality and do so by describing the young woman as “wayward” and “difficult.” The man said, “she is a child that[sic] wants to live her own life,” as if that could ever, EVER, justify his abuse.

Can you fathom the sheer amount of gaslighting I am almost certain his daughter had to endure as a young girl and into womanhood?

And if there was no camera footage to corroborate the young woman’s experiences, can you begin to fathom the aspersions that might have been cast on her?

Because the abuse of children by their parents is something enduringly normalised in our society, I think this man felt that he could’ve hopped on social media and solicited sympathy for his actions. If you couldn’t immediately discern that his actions were abusive

and not actions of a loving, overprotective parent (as he described himself), then you might be swayed into thinking that yes, maybe he was wrong to kick the woman, but at least his intentions were in the right place.

First of all, it’s a no for me. You don’t have to be an expert to know that this man’s actions were abusive and nothing else. There is no amount of justification that could ever explain it. But it simply breaks my heart, knowing that this man indeed found some sympathy and acceptance from other parents who may very well be in the same positions of power that he was in.

I’m glad that the young woman was able to secure some amount of protection from the judicial system, and I can only hope that she gets the necessary psychological help to heal herself from the trauma she endured.

And I am most definitely proud of how brave she was in coming out and sharing her story- knowing how unforgiving some societal actors can be at times, especially when it's about normalised, problematic behaviours (such as parents having the apparent God-given right to abuse children).

But, there’s something else to consider. Dr Gabrielle Hosein, who has served as the Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) at the University of the West Indies (UWI)- St. Augustine campus, addressed the brutalisation of women.

“Before men kill, there are always patterns of threat, control, anger, cruelty, and rape so normalised that they are commonly excused,” Dr Hosein wrote in a column published in the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday in February.

about a particular subject. For the audience, it could be to inform them, evoke conversation, make them think or get their feedback. Whatever your purpose, it must be meaningful which will, therefore make it beneficial to all parties and help you to create engaging content.

Know your audience.

Your platform may be a general one, but not everyone will be interested in what you have to say, and they don’t need to b e . O n c e y o u h a v e d eveloped your purpose for writing the column and who you’re writing for, it will be easier to choose the types of topics you discuss to attract your audience based on their interests.

Passion and Commitment. I could have listed one without the other, but I chose to use them both because I believe that together, they contribute to excellent output in any type of writing. A writer who decides to be a columnist is driven by the thought of writing about a particular topic area and can do so by developing many ideas.

The commitment, however, is key to what makes a columnist ensure that they continue to submit.

Without commitment, they may never be able to find the time to write or to submit in time for the recurring deadline. I have found that this is one of the main things lacking in new columnists.

But when a columnist is committed, it shows in their output. I am proud of young columnists like Vishani Ragobeer, who, after starting her column in 2018 has never missed a submission deadline to date. This is a rare find in newer (and younger) columnists and I commend her!

A sustainable flow of

ideas. The easiest path to sustainability in a column is to write based on expertise. The Dentist Advises and The Psychologist are two examplesthe authors hold professional experience and can continually derive topics based on that experience.

However, this is not always possible, given the various types of columns that exist in the social sphere. But experience or knowledge of some kind is generally an important aspect of one’s ability to produce new ideas on a column. The other part is actually getting those ideas down on paper.

The list can be much longer, but I believe that before you get into form and structure and all the technical aspects of writing, these are the important things you need before starting to write.

Writers must ensure that they are ready for the long haul when they venture into column-writing as it speaks to their commitment, discipline and credibility in the profession. Most importantly, you do your audience a great misdeed if you start on the road to writing for them, only to find out that you cannot continue because of lack of time, writer’s block or some other matter that you were not prepared for.

And that, I would say, is the biggest item to consider in column-writing: PREPARATION! Many obstacles will arise every day, week or month, but you have to be prepared to show up and produce, regardless. Your audience and your credibility depend on it.

In a nice manner, at your introductory interview, your dentist knows that you know what to expect and that you do expect it and that you will not settle for less. If the outcome is not right, you can be sure that he knows it. If both of you know better, surely you can take the opportunity to have the situation corrected.

I truly believe in that old wonder, the silver amalgam restoration. If that restoration area is not too extensive, and if the proper technique is employed, the old “silver filling” is a real marvel. I have seen some of them going fine even after 45 yrs! But over the years, there has been a tremendous improvement to the extent that amalgam fillings now have no place in my clinic. The tooth-coloured composite resin is among the best for front

teeth. Unfortunately, it may get discoloured after a few years and may require changing. Chemically, it may be irritating to the tooth issue, so like all restorations, it should be placed over a cover (tooth protective) liner.

Important points to remember are the following: * Never think your dentist lectures extensively; if and when that happens, rest assured they don’t do it for fun. * Learn about the procedures you anticipate the dentists would execute, so you can understand and “level” with them. * Composite resins and silver amalgams continue to be the most common restoration materials around because they have stood the test of time and are relatively cheap.

father’s abuse. I wonder, as I said before, whether we would’ve believed her without the video evidence to support her complaints.

And this, coupled with Dr Hosein’s column, made me think about Savitri.

Based on local reports, Savitri was horrifically murdered in her sleep. Her husband, family members believe, covered the woman’s mouth and stabbed her in her sleep. Several weeks before this gruesome act, the man struck Savitri in her head with a Guinness stout bottle, prompting the woman to make a report.

And on the day before their scheduled court appearance, the man reportedly killed the woman.

Save for the reports of the abuse meted out to her that preceded the scheduled court appearance, we may never understand the level of abuse Savitri ex-

perienced. And now, we will never know how she might’ve benefitted from institutional support- had the judicial system similarly provided her with some level of protection (as it did to the businessman’s daughter).

And once again, we’re here mourning the horrific death of another womananother mother. Each time I write about violence against women it becomes increasingly saddening, but I hope that with each passing day, in honour of the women we should’ve been able to save, I hope that we can unlearn some of our problematic notions and truly eliminate the scourge of all violence against all women.

The ache in her heart was so deep. She had been sleeping so little, tiredness overcame her.

Now as she leaned back in the chair, her eyes started to close and unconsciously she took off her hijab as she drifted off to sleep.

Rahim’s soul could have left but the machine breathing for him was holding him from crossing to the beyond. He wanted to go because he knew his mother would be waiting for him but a soft voice was talking to him, a voice he knew he loved, wanting him not to leave.

“What do I have to stay for?” he asked himself, seeming to be walking away in his unconscious mind.

“You have me.” She said.

He turned around and saw her standing there, her hair falling softly down her shoulders and her smile, the magic that helped him find his way out of the darkness, where he had been lost. She held out her hand and walking slowly towards her, he took her hand.

“Why do you want me to come back with you?” he asked.

“Because I love you.” She whispered.

Rahim opened his eyes, not sure where he was. Everything seemed to be in a daze. His heartbeat increased and as his eyes cleared, he saw her leaning back on the chair, sleeping peacefully, a most beautiful picture.

He hadn’t the strength to call her name but tried moving his finger a little for she had fallen asleep holding his hand. Salima felt the slight movement of his fingers and opening her eyes, she sat up with a start.

“Rahim?”

Doctors rushed to attend to him as she sat outside with his family, who were all crying quietly with deep relief, and giving thanks to Allah for his recovery.

Salima was sitting not too far away from Rahim’s father, quite unaware she was not wearing her hijab until one of the nurses from the ward brought it to her. She gasped, glancing at the old man as she hurriedly covered her hair but he raised his hand slowly, and with a tolerant smile he said, “I will respect your choice.”

Rahim’s sisters looked at their father stunned, as he continued saying to her, “You’re like an angel Allah sent to save my son, and after a long time I can feel a little happiness.”

When Rahim recovered and had enough strength to speak, he forgave his father and a family that had been broken by hate and tension became one again, with love.

Salima had been paying him short visits to check on his progress and a week after her day shift had ended she visited him in the night. He greeted her with a warm smile and said in a casual tone, but she saw the pained look that flickered in his eyes, “I almost did not make it doctor.”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you let me go?”

“Because…” she paused, not sure how to tell him what she was feeling in her heart.

“Salima,” he squeezed her hand gently, “Look at me.”

It was the first time he had addressed her not by ‘Doctor’.

A subtle passion in his tone, she had never heard before and at that moment when his eyes held hers, a love that had been hushed could now be expressed and she said to him, “Because I love you.”

He inhaled deeply and lifting her hand to his lips, he kissed it and said, “Words I wanted so much to hear, my mother will be very happy.”

Her love was the miracle that gave him a second chance to live.
