Take the vaccine, it saves lives

MY first written focus on the COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana was in a feature article right here in the Chronicle Pepperpot Magazine in July 2020. The number of global deaths attributed to the pandemic at that time was 985,000, and just about 20 here in Guyana. Over

two years, the global death figure from the COVID-19 virus has risen to a staggering 5.633 million, with many in developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries. For example, most of the developing countries in Latin and South America, as well as in Africa and Asia, have lower incidents of COVID-19 deaths, compared to their individual populations. In fact, only South Africa, Egypt and Morocco in Africa are experiencing high incidents of COVID-19 deaths. All the other African countries have lower incidents of COVID-19 deaths. In my original article, it was pointed out that New Zealand was keeping the virus at bay by observing all protocols. The number of deaths at that time was just 25 and after two years it has increased to only 52.

For many months after the coronavirus began spreading across Europe and Asia like a wildfire with a strong breeze fanning it on, the Guyana

COVID-19 figure was in single digits. However, in recent weeks the figure has risen to 1,140 and counting. That increasing number is not because the Ministry of Health and Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony himself have not been doing the most in their power to inform and exhort the Guyanese people regarding the dos and don’ts and the protocols for their safety. People need to do what it takes to protect themselves from contracting the virus, and that includes taking the vaccine. While the message is getting through to the majority, there are still those who are not heeding the pleas of the health authorities.

Admittedly, there is a high percentage of Guyanese who are doing the right things and the country still remains among the group of countries that are keeping the coronavirus relatively under control, despite those citizens who are obviously not listening and certainly not doing what they should to keep themselves safe. Just too many persons can be observed moving around in public spaces such as markets and stores without wearing masks. Others also ride on the minibuses without wearing masks for protection. While the global figure of COVID-19 deaths is increasing rapidly, it would be safe to say that Guyana is not in that race.

One of the disappointing facts about the effort to contain the coronavirus in Guyana is that there are quite a number of individuals who refuse to get vaccinated They claim that it is their body, and they have the right to refuse the vaccination. While that is absolutely true, such persons should consider that they live in a civilised

society in which there are rules and regulations for the smooth running of the country with laws, rules and regulations, and it is expected that the citizens will obey them for the “happiness and prosperity of Guyana.” It is all about Guyanese recognising that we are all in Guyana as citizens of a “Magnificent Province,” where there is free medical service provided by the Health Ministry, that we should reject it. The vaccines that protect against COVID-19 are available free of cost, and as such, all Guyanese should make themselves available and take the “damn” [sic] vaccine. It will save lives; there is proof that the vaccine has saved thousands of lives within the Caribbean, including Guyanese lives.

Agricola youth seized every opportunity that came his way

MILTON Augustues Smith can still remember his days of juggling two jobs while attending the University of Guyana. He had clearly in mind the goal he was working towards and would let nothing – not even sleep – deprive him of the opportunities that were before him; those that he knew were instrumental in helping him to realise his dreams.

In order to do his Associate Degree in Social Work, he’d go in for the night shift at the Georgetown Public Hospital, finish at 07:00hrs the following morning, and leave for work at the Ministry of Human Services – and get there on time for 08:00hrs.

He’d fold his clothes carefully and pack them in his bag so that when he got to his hospital job, he would just have to hang them out on an IV stand or whatever was available, so that by the next morning, they’d be perfect for his job at the ministry.

Having served his eight hours there, Milton would then make his way to UG, go home briefly afterwards to freshen up and then get

right back to the hospital.

And that’s the way it went for quite some time until he was able to complete his studies. These are the kinds of sacrifices that led to Milton owning his own home and paying for his university degree at just 35 years old.

Now employed at the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) as a senior Probation and Social Services officer, Milton has responsibility for all issues of child abuse in Regions One and Eight.

Having achieved the Associates Degree, Milton did the Bachelor’s Degree and then decided that it was time for him to rest; he felt that he’s studied enough and that it was now time for it to be all over.

But wouldn’t you know?

He saw that the Masters of Social Work programme was being offered by UG and that there was a scholarship available.

“I said to myself that with my GPA, I qualified for the scholarship, so I decided to apply and was Milton was recently able to successfully complete the accepted,” Milton reflect- Masters programme in Social Work with a special focus on juvenile justice ed in an interview with

Pepperpot Magazine recently. He was thus able to complete the Master’s programme in Social Work successfully, with a special focus on juvenile justice, and is preparing for his Zoom graduation on February 11.

Humble Beginnings Milton was not born with a gold spoon in his mouth, as the saying goes. Coming from a nuclear family, he had 10 siblings and his parents Jean and Milton Snr, were vendors. Life in Agricola, East Bank Demerara, was certainly not easy for the Smith family, especially when Mrs Smith died when Milton was still in secondary school.

His dear grandmother Eileen (now deceased) saw to it that the family was cared for, using her meagre pension to buy food for the household. “For me to write CXC, I had to be supported by my grandmother. It was a struggle, but I learnt contentment and other

qualities from the experience,” Milton would later say.

“Sometimes the only way to achieve certain things is to create opportunities for ourselves; they are not given to us. Things will not just come knocking at your door.

Sometimes you have to do things that you don’t like before you get what you really want. You can’t just sit down and wait. It often takes us looking and venturing into different directions but still remembering our main goal,” Milton realised.

And this is exactly what he did. He saw the value of seizing every opportunity that came his way and took the initiative to go after some.

One thing was clear in his mind: “Learn to take what is there until you get what you want.”

Milton did many jobs before he really figured out what he would choose to settle with. He can still remember his job in the fishing and painting industries and how he was tasked with loading paint cans, painting labels, and cleaning up spilt paint.

‘It wasn’t Obeah, it was Leprosy’

By Telesha Ramnarine W H E N Ya d u n a u t h Singh started to see unusual bumps coming out all over his body, he hadn’t a clue why.

With no explanation being offered by doctors, he resorted to the idea that someone had “worked obeah” on him – a line of local thinking adopted by many who are presented with no reasonable or logical explanation for their suffering.

So he went to ‘pandit after pandit’ in his quest to find answers and did the full works – bathing at the riverside and everything else that was required in the process.

But the bumps didn’t go away.

Out of nowhere, it seems, a more practical thought came to mind.

Yadunauth, who was just about 37 years old at the time, decided that he would pay a visit to the ‘Skin Clinic’ located in the Palms Geriatric Home, Brickdam.

“I was going back and forth to the hospital

and wasn’t getting any help.

disease and at first, being uneducated about it was not a nice experience at all for Yadunauth. “It was spots like ringworms and bumps on my face, feet, shoulder, back, hands. I was

shampoo for anti-fungus and all these kinds of things. It wasn’t helping. At times people think about obeah and people ‘do’ you. All of that was running through my mind, so I went to this pandit and that pandit went to bathe at the riverside, and all these things,” Yadunauth, now 45, reflected in an interview with Pepperpot Magazine.

Once at the Skin Clinic, he was asked to do a test, which confirmed that he had Leprosy Disease. He enrolled at the Guyana Leprosy Control Clinic and started receiving treatment which would prove to be just what he needed.

“I was treated there for one full year. I took my medication on time every time.

The treatment was awesome. I was tested again and was found to be Leprosy free. There are no more lesions on my skin, no marks, no spots.”

Living with the

wondering just what it was, and even the doctors didn’t know. I was stigmatized and discriminated against. People thought I had AIDS and all kinds of things,” he shared.

“I used to wear long sleeves shirts to go on the road and would most times opt to stay home because people would tend to drift away from me and shun me. I really felt that I was highly discriminated against, especially when it came to sitting next to someone,” Yadunauth further recalled.

He has made it a point to go on the internet and research the disease to educate himself on the subject. Having no family history of Leprosy, he still doesn’t understand how he got the disease in the first place.

But today, he is thankful that he got the treatment needed to help him. “My skin is clean as if I never had Leprosy before. I am normal again,” he expressed.

And as for those who treated him scornfully in the past and drew all sorts of conclusions about him without having the right information, Yadunauth said he tries to educate them now about the disease.

Meanwhile, doctors and the rest of the team at the Guyana Leprosy Control Clinic are going all out to help the public understand that Leprosy should no longer be thought of as an ancient disease but as one that is still very much affecting people today and more specifically, Guyanese. Last year, 32 cases of Leprosy were recorded, and of this, 24 were males, six were females, and two were children.

Sixty-one percent of last year’s cases had the severe form of Leprosy known as Multibacillary Leprosy and 19 percent had visible disabilities, meaning either clawing of fingers, shortened fingers or toes, drop foot, muscle-wasting, muscle weakness, decreased vision, chronic ulcers, etc. In 2020, 13 cases were recorded, 27 in 2019 and 50 in 2018. So far, for 2022, one new case has been detected.

The theme for World Leprosy Day 2022 (today, January 30) is “United for dignity,” and in keeping with it, the ‘Leprosy Clinic’ will seek to continue raising awareness of the disease. The annual health walk and World Leprosy Day ceremony will not be done this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the number of steel bands in the latter half of the ‘80s and ‘90s began to diminish and continued to. This was caused by the different route used to create and manage a band. In the ‘50s, tuners were once considered the owners of the band, but over time band managers and musical composers became a must…

The cost for procuring the instruments became a challenge and even the cost for maintaining the instruments became a challenge, so you saw a decline in the number of the bands and, as a result, a decline in the interest of the art form.”

The Pepperpot Magazine spoke with Mr. Clayton Daniels, a pan tuner who has been involved in both the tuning and playing of pan music for the past 25 years.

Daniels believes that the art form is a very nice form to get into as it serves as a deterrent from trouble and it is a skill that persons could utilise anywhere around the world.

But according to him, he also believes that for its survival, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and other institutions must go all out in the promotion of the art form.

The Private Sector, according to him, must play a major role in the promotion of the steel pan music through financial support as well, Daniels opined.

A visit to

Gangaram Settlement

By Michel Outridge THIS week the Pepperpot Magazine visited Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, Berbice to highlight the way of life of the people.

The village is self-sufficient in terms of food security and the people are self-reliant, having their own poultry and livestock.

Gangaram Settlement is sandwiched between Betsy Ground and Speculation villages and it is a very quiet countryside place which is breezy and the people are friendly.

The population of the village is just over 450 residents of mostly Indo-Guyanese descent and a handful of Afro Guyanese.

The village was established in the 1960s when the sugar estate wanted to access the lands at New Dam,

which is located about four miles away.

It is in a back dam section of that area. As such, the people residing on state lands were relocated to Gangaram Settlement.

The self-reliant people of Gangaram Settlement

By Michel Outridge GLENO and Murna Dhani are residents of Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, Berbice and they live at the edge of the village, in the last street in a well-kept plot and a nice home.

This couple told the Pepperpot Magazine they enjoy a peaceful life and they are pleased about not having noisy neighbours that are

He was a cane harvester and these days, he is taking his life one day at a time rearing some poultry and just keeping things in the yard organised.

His wife Murna takes care of the cooking and household chores and they are very comfortable.

They have three children, all grown and on their own

Gleno reported that he has lived all his life in the village while his wife came to settle there after marriage.

They had a kitchen garden, but they lost all their cash crops when the dam was compromised and they are yet to re-plant.

Drupattie Sarwan In the same village, is the home of Drupattie Sarwan called Sadhana, a mother of three, who lives with her husband, a rice farmer and sugar worker.

The 56-year-old is a housewife who takes care of the home and assists in gardening in the backyard.

Sarwan and her husband have a simple but hardworking life in this section of the country but they seem satisfied.

“I would get up early to cook because my husband leaves home at 04:00hrs for the rice field and he would also go to his other job after,” she said.

She resides next door to her mother, an elder of the village and would keep an eye on her.

Meanwhile, in the same village, in the Pump Station Street is the home of Randy Sinsamy, his wife and daughter.

The 29-year-old is a sugar worker attached to the Albion Sugar Estate and he would make the daily commute from his village to the Corentyne.

He resides in the house that belongs to his parents, who migrated and he has two siblings.

He has no neighbours and he is quite pleased about that since he enjoys a very quiet kind of peace.

“This is out-of-crop season, so I am at home, so I have to do other jobs to bring in an income to the home, and I would do mason and carpentry work when it is available,” he said.

Eking out a living in Gangaram Settlement

SINDA-Rita Chindersain is the mother and father for her children and life as it hasn’t been kind to this mother of three, whose life has been filled with the pain of losing all the men in her household.

The 50-year-old told the Pepperpot Magazine that she is a single mother and took care of her children until they were mature enough to

go on their own.

She had four children but lost her son when he was just three months old.

She reportedly took him for an injection and he did not survive.

“I was so poor, I used to dab bottom house with cow manure for a living and the people in the village helped to bury my son. They made a wooden box and placed him inside and took him on a bicycle to the cemetery for

burial,” she said.

Chindersain told the Pepperpot Magazine that after she became a single parent, she was forced to work.

Her first job was as a ‘domestic’ washing clothes for the neighbours and dabbing their bottom house with cow manure.

Two of her three children are grown, but she has a daughter still in high school.

Chindersain stated that

she began living in Gangaram Settlement at 10 years old and as she grew a bit older, her parents passed away.

She was of age and got married but was separated and soon after, her husband died.

The Gangaram resident added that she lost her sonin-law, who used to assist her and he was living with her along with his wife and a baby.

He was killed in an accident in October last year. He had a baby boy after 10 years of marriage and was excited to watch his son grow, but his life was cut short, she said.

Today, she has to care for her daughter and her grandson but she doesn’t mind because she would assist her in the home.

The baby is Nathan Appro and he is five months old. His widowed mother, Waheeda Appro, 27 is a stayat-home mother.

Her daughter would assist in chores and that day, the baby was a bit fussy due to a cold, so they had some challenges making a meal of rice with stew chicken.

A day in the life For Chindersain, she doesn’t see work as being that for man or woman, but whatever is available, she

would do to earn honestly.

She is a poultry and livestock farmer who also has a kitchen garden of cash crops and she has a full-time job as a security supervisor, visiting locations all the way up to

Corentyne.

She has some meat birds, some ducks and creole fowls.

- Enjoying their retirement after many years of hard work

By Michel Outridge HARDAI Ramnarine called ‘Aunty Leila’ is 73 years old and is of one of the elders in Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, who is still very active and keeps a kitchen garden of greens and fruits of which she would sell to earn.

This pleasant elder, who was at the time visiting her granddaughter a few houses away in her street when the team met her, related that she had brought creole eggs as a gift for the relative.

She had spent some time to have a chat and was also enjoy the cool countryside breeze that day.

Ramnarine told the Pepperpot Magazine that she relocated to Gangaram Settlement in 1962 from New Dam, right in Canje.

She was just 11 years old when her parents and two siblings moved since the lands were being utilised for sugar cane cultivation by the state.

she became of age and she got married and went to Corentyne to live with her new family but some years later returned to Gangaram.

Hardai added that after her husband died 10 years ago, she had to fend for herself and she always had a love for gardening and she started to plant her entire yard, even in the sidewalk in front of her home.

“I could not depend on anyone to help me, so I planted greens and the eggs from the chickens I would sell in the village and get a ‘small-piece’, you know to offset my expenses,” she said.

All her life, she was self-employed and was not about to go and work for people so she also began sewing from home on a sewing machine she had bought when she was much younger.

“At age 15 years old, I went to sewing classes and at 16, I mastered the art of sewing and became a seamstress and used her father’s sewing machine to make a lot of things,” she said.

She related that she bought her own sewing machine two years after mar-

riage, the same one she still has.

At 73 years old, Hardai does her own cooking, chores and would spend a lot of time gardening in her yard but lost most of her cultivation last year when the village was flooded.

On any given day, Barran is willing to assist anyone in need. Even if it is a meal, she would go into her own pocket to ensure that the needs of people are met.

“I always had it in me to give, and it all started when I assisted a student whose family wasn’t financially capable of sending him/her to President’s College,” she said.

Barran related that growing up in Gangaram Settlement, they always had food on the table, but when she went to teach in other villages, she realised that it was not so.

“I quickly realised some pupils were not getting three meals per day, and it bothered me, so I gave them what I can,” she said.

She explained that she was moved to tears one day when she was told that her son, who is pursuing studies overseas to become a pilot, gave his pocket-piece to a child who had no lunch.

Barran added that she instilled good values in her children, and they too grew up with a giving attitude, and for that, she is beyond pleased she succeeded as a mother and a role model.

She told the Pepperpot Magazine that in 2020 when the pandemic started here, she was moved when she found out some people in Berbice had nothing to eat after losing their jobs.

Barran sought assistance from friends and family overseas and was successful in distributing hampers of groceries to many homes in Corentyne.

At Christmas, she would get toys for the children in Gangaram Settlement and share goodies.

“I would get help from overseas at times, but I would go into my own pocket a lot to give because I am compelled to,” she said.

Barran added that whatever she does for charity, it is something she wants to do and will never count the dollars handed out to people who needed it more than others.

She also does a bit of counselling to parents and just about anyone who needs a ‘pep talk,’ to overcome difficulties in life.

Barran is well known in East Canje and is a household name because of her giving nature and personality.

“I started talking to people who showed up just so, out of the blue and requested advice in many situations. I talked to them, and things seemed to be better for them, so they would come when they need to,” she said.

Barran also worked at the Rose Hall Estate and spent some time with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) as an accountant.

She also attended the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.

Barran is one of the nicest persons you will encounter, and she has that air of calm about her that is as comforting not only as a teacher, but as a person.

Throughout it all, though, he would read the newspapers. He knew he didn’t do well in school and had nothing to show for CXC, but he also knew what he was capable of achieving once he was given the opportunity. So one day, he noticed in the newspapers a vacancy for patient care at Georgetown Hospital.

With his one CXC subject in hand (a Grade Three in Social Studies), he decided that he’ll still apply for it, owing to the fact that it was a job that would enable him to be of service to others.

He got into the programme, served well for 16 months and actually stood out on account of his engaging, happy personality. “I completed it as one of the more resourceful students and got an award. I was able to gain employment at GPHC and that is where I was exposed to the nursing profession. I

continued there for 10 years during which time I applied to be a UN volunteer along with other programmes,” he shared.

Giving Back Owing to his own experiences in life, Milton has always had an interest in social work. “It is an innate desire to see people develop that led me to gravitate towards this profession,” he said.

So when he was appointed the first president of the Young Leaders of Agricola organisation, he was able to help with work that had a transformative effect on the community, especially youths. “We did some amazing things. Agricola was the place where I grew up and throughout my university life, I have always taken projects back to my community. I felt I owed my community that; to return and give of my services to

others to motivate them to accomplish great things.”

It was while doing nursing and a full-time programme with ACDA that Milton started UG. “I seized all opportunities to develop myself. What did not happen to me in my first years of life eventually happened to me later.”

Every Child Guyana (now Child Link) was one social work agency that Milton was able to benefit from as a child. So when he got an opportunity to work with the organisation, he felt it a privilege. “It did something for me as a teen that trickled into my adulthood. It spurred my desire to become a professional social worker,” he shared. And it was through a project between Child Link and the CPA that he began working with the ministry.

Milton is grateful for his supportive wife Malia and two daughters, Mea and Makaylah.

Sinsamy works on a shift system at the sugar estate and describes life in Gangaram Settlement as being tranquil and good.

The Councillor and her family Lilawattie Hardyal called Sabo is a Councillor attached to the Goed Bananen Land Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and she is a resident of Gangaram Settlement.

She is the mother of four and lives in an extended family setting with two of her sons, their wives and some grandchildren.

Hardyal is constructing a shop in her yard that she will open shortly to sell groceries and other things as a small business.

Her husband, Dhanesh Hardyal retired from the sugar estate seven years ago and he is a livestock farmer of some goats and poultry.

“As a pensioner, I get bored being at home, so I find things to do and I would take the goats to graze in the pasture area,

further along, the road and I have things in the yard to do such as gardening,” he said.

Dhanesh Hardyal disclosed that being at home for those seven years feels a lot longer because he is accustomed to working.

He would have his goats secured in an empty plot opposite his house.

He said the village is a safe place to raise a family and it is a place where the people has means of earning honestly.

“Everybody around here doing something to earn, so you don’t find thieves lurking and the people are good,” he said.

Most of those people have since passed on but their descendants are still there and it is also said that a lot of people migrated.

The village has a few elders, who are still in good health and able-bodied.

Gangaram Settlement has two mandirs and one church.

It also has a nursery and primary school housed in one building. That school was relocated from New Dam along with all the residents and one mandir in the 1960s.

The village has a play-

tion company where locals are employed.

It is said to be a very safe neighbourhood where doors are left unlocked and the people are easy-going and welcoming.

It is a place where almost everybody has a kitchen garden and a yard full of plants and flowers to add that extra spot of colour to the environment.

The people have their own goats, sheep, cows, ducks, chickens and a few rear horses and donkeys to assist them with land transport.

The locals have a lot of pets and in one residence, there were more than seven dogs of all sizes and breeds.

There are just a few shingle-style wooden houses in this village that endured the test of time and they are well-preserved to their colonial style.

This is the kind of village where the people drink fresh cow’s milk at breakfast and cook the calaloo from their backyard to go with roti.

Most households would make breakfast then do a one-cook for lunch and dinner.

The church

The locals of Gangaram Settlement are rice farmers, poultry framers, livestock farmers, small business owners, sugar workers and other skilled professionals.

The village has electricity, potable water, landline phones and internet.

The people of this village would go to New Amsterdam or utilise the supermarkets along the main access road to do their shopping.

They catch their own fish and eat what they grow.

Gangaram Settlement is a quiet place to raise a family and the people are simple and respectfully go about their daily lives without being a nuisance.

The village has a Pump Station at the edge of the village and a dam separates the land from the Canje Creek, where there is an abundance of mangrove trees.

The people are hard workers and would get up at the crack of dawn to go to their farms, but they would also tend to their livestock and poultry before heading off.

Gangaram Settlement is the perfect place to sit under huge shady trees.

The homes are well-tiled from the front gate and very spotless.

Residents are set in a very traditional way of life but are really simple folk, trying to earn and make a good life for themselves and their family.

World Wetlands Day

2022 will mark the first year that the United Nations recognises World Wetlands Day as an environmental observance on its calendar, although the day has been celebrated for more than two decades. Even more important than the day itself is recognition of the ever-growing importance of wetlands to the planet’s and our survival.

Wetlands, or areas that are either permanently or seasonally flooded, not only help to absorb carbon dioxide and regulate global climate, they perform a wide range of services –- from protection against storms and other natural hazards, habitats for oth-

We have no right to tell victims of sexual abuse when, how or where to speak out against their abusers AS a young writer, my only constant writing mentor has been myself. As such, I taught myself that silence through observation allows us to grasp the simplicities through the complexities. In other words, I observe to understand and then head to my computer and quiet space to write. I recently observed that many alleged victims are taking a stance to speak up against their abusers/abusive experiences. Most of these cases were sexual abuse/assault and/or entailed sexual grooming.

While I am no lawyer or scholar of the law, I know that a person is legally innocent until proven legally guilty. Nonetheless, that should not allow us to mute the voices of alleged victims along with their stories. I have observed many instances where persons prepared rebuttals and have shamed the victims, accused them of lying and even tried to dig up past dirt on them.

Some people did every other thing possible, except listening to alleged victims and their claims.

We have NO right to tell abused victims how to feel, when they should tell their stories, when they should go to legal authorities, which platforms to use when they tell their stories, what tone to use, what time of day or day of the month—whatsoever. Even if you were abused yourself; you still have no right to compel another victim because “this is how I handled it and so should you.” Every individual and their experiences are different. The same can be said for the way we deal with trauma and in this case; abuse. No one is asking you to believe an alleged victim’s story, neither are they asking you to feel pity for them. It can be liberating and also terrifying for victims to come forward with a truth that haunts them; a truth they wish wasn’t true. It can take many years for some people to process raw traumatic experiences while it may also take others to do the same in a matter of days—we’re all different.

The least we can do is show even a minuscule of human decency to people who may want to finally tell the world of their darkest days and expose monsters for who they are.

These very instances of disregarding public statements of alleged victims in a country where rape culture is already glorified are more reasons as to why so many victims will remain silent. When sexual abuse victims “speak up”, the least we can do is listen. We have no right to tell a victim when, where or how they should speak out against their abuser—only their mind and body can.

Victims have been manipulated and controlled with their experiences so the minute they decide to take back

that control then let’s listen and try to understand.

Who are we to devalue the experiences of victims?

Who are we to judge and compel them on how they should feel? We ought to do better Guyana. Yes, most accused are concerned with their reputation but we should not stop persons from having a voice. If you really are innocent then allow the law to prove it.

Upon my arrival at the St. Thomas airport, I was warmly greeted by members of the local production team. After securing my luggage, I was informed that I will be taken to a hotel, and at approximately 8:45 a.m. the next day. My voice coach, Eric Zucker, will be picking me up to take me to the set (location). I immediately said to myself, “Eric Zucker?” That did not sound like a Caribbean or an African last name to me. After all, I ‘won’ the commercial in New York and wondered why I had to be assigned a voice coach.

When the Jeep pulled up outside the hotel, I hurriedly jumped in, still excited about getting the opportunity to acquire my first national commercial. Arvin was attentive and supportive, taking her to places she had loved and getting her to do things she loved like Latino dancing but somehow, it all seemed different. She tried to

enjoy it all to be appreciative of his efforts but something was missing.

She worked part time in her father’s office and her mother’s gift shop to occupy her time meaningfully and one day as she was browsing through a National Geographic magazine, she saw the picture of a young, pregnant, native girl, sitting by her hut weaving baskets.

She stared at the picture and suddenly a light exploded in her head as she heard herself chatting over the plane’s radio, laughing a little at something then the heavy winds, her distress call and screams then a heavy crash and it all became dark.

ments, her eyes closed and when she opened them, she was not at the airport base but in her mother’s gift shop.

She looked at her watch, noting the date and time and she called on her mother, “Why am I here? I always have bookings to fly on Tuesdays.”

“Oh my god,” her mother laughed, tears of relief filling her eyes, realizing her daughter had regained her memory.

The fragmented pieces all came together at the picture of the pregnant native girl, she was supposed to airlift that day.

Arvin was elated, taking her out to a special dinner at their favourite restaurant to celebrate.

He wanted to start discussing marriage plans and though Amelia tried to feel happy and excited, her heart wasn’t in it. She had loved him, she had wanted this but it all changed one day in the deep jungle.

Arvin had known her long enough to know what was happening, the sweetness in her smile was there no more, the spark in her eyes gone and loving her as such as he did, he knew there was only one thing left for him to do.

The night when they were supposed to finalize their wedding date, he took her hand in his and said to her, “You really don’t want this anymore, do you?”

She looked at him, a little surprised, “Why do you say that?”

“Because I can feel it in my heart, you’re not truly happy, something has changed.”

She didn’t answer for a while then she said, “I’m sorry.

I don’t know how it happened.”

“I will always love you, Amelia,” he said, “But I can’t hold on to something that doesn’t belong to me anymore. I have to let you go.”

She looked at him, tears in her eyes, “Arvin…”

“It’s okay,” he said, “You are free to go, he’s waiting for you.”

She sat there for a long time after Arvin had left, crying quietly, regrets in her heart but not a deep love for him that would have made her want to stay. She piloted the plane herself, one week later, landing at the nearest airstrip and with the help of two army friends she had flown in with her, she reached the village without any mishap.

Samuel was pleased beyond words, the natives overjoyed, her two flower fairies hugging her, but no one knew where Nate was.

There were so many places he could be but there was one place she was sure she would find him. She ran all the way to a clearing in the woods where he had shown her he wanted to build a cabin, his dream home and she saw him standing there, staring at the empty space.

“Nate,” she called his name softly, a little breathless.

He turned around slowly, not sure if it was her voice or a whisper in the wind, and he saw her standing there like a dream, the wind teasing her hair, a smile on her lips.

“Amelia…” he smiled surprised, his spirits lifted, “You came back.”

She would sell off excess greens in her small shop, which has every little thing and is usually manned by her daughter when she is at work.

A typical day in the life of this resident starts at 04:00hrs, and she would first tend to her livestock and poultry before taking a bath and start cooking for her teenage daughter to attend school.

After seeing her off to school, she would ensure the shop is in order and complete household chores before heading off to work using public transportation to get to as far as Corriverton.

Chindersain is not the kind of woman who takes a break from work and in her spare time, which is not a lot, she would

utilise her sewing machine to make hammocks for sale.

Chindersain added that life in the village is fair but for one to enjoy a good quality of life, they have to do more than one thing to earn.

She has a full-time job as a security supervisor visiting job sites and she is also a farmer, who would pluck and sell her meat birds after they attain their full-term of six to eight weeks old.

The local would also ensure the yard is well-kept and would de-weed the entire place when she can and would tend to her flowers and plants that survived the flood they had last year.
