By Rehana Ahamad REGION Five (Mahaica-Berbice) is being actively positioned to become the poultry capital of not only Guyana, but the larger Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as well.

This vision, shared by President Dr Irfaan Ali during the launch of a Black Belly Sheep Project at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice on Sunday, was music to the ears of scores of farmers who were in attendance.

In a detailed presentation about the project, the Head of State informed the attendees that within the next two weeks, 1,000 Black Belly sheep will be arriving from Barbados to kickstart the project which has already benefited from the commitment of 78 farmers.

The project is intended to pave the way for Guyana to tap into the region’s hefty food-importation bill, which sees CARICOM countries collectively spending some U.S.$43 million just to import mutton alone. And even though Guyana’s food-production capabilities are impressive, the country still imports approximately U.S.$130,000 worth of mutton.

Already, Guyana has been able to tap into a U.S.$6.8 million market by being the confirmed supplier of mutton for Barbados.

“The Barbados market alone is tremendous,” the President reflected.

This was one of the many positive outcomes of a series of extensive engagements between President Ali and Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, within the past year.

But for Guyana to truly make its impact on the Caribbean market, President Ali said that investments have to be made, partic-

ularly to inspire the continued efforts of farmers who are essentially the backbone to execute government’s vision.

“We have to increase production, improve breed and use advanced technology and infrastructure,” Dr Ali recognised.

With an initial investment of US$3 million, Dr Ali said that the onset of the Black Belly Sheep project targets 2,000 heads of sheep, and is slated for significant expansion in order to produce at least 7,000 tonnes of mutton by the end of five years. It is also expected to create at least 4,500 direct and indirect jobs.

Further, President Ali was keen on acknowledging the shortcomings

of the sheep-production industry, pointing to inadequate climate-smart housing facilities for the sheep; poor pasture management; limited technology transfer and high costs of production, among other things.

As it relates to the inadequate access to feed, President Ali said that challenges being faced will be significantly alleviated by the 115-acre soya bean, and five-acre corn pilot projects at Ebini, on the Upper Berbice River.

In the meantime, high costs of production will also be largely cushioned by the many clean-energy initiatives being pursued by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government, including the U.S.$900 million

gas-to-energy- project earmarked for Wales on the West Bank of Demerara.

SUPPORT MACHINERY Further, President Ali said that global players have already been engaged to lend critical support to local farmers who require training on technologies and various innovative means of sheep-rearing.

“We are going to hire a dedicated team to work with the farmers…an entire machinery to work with you,” Dr Ali emphasised.

He explained that the sector will go through “infantry” period. “We now have to start from

He said that in addition to Region Five, communities such as Karasabai will also be playing an important role.

“This is a well-calculated vision we’re presenting you with today,” the President assured residents.

Janet Jagan

MARCH 28, 2022, marks 13 years since the passing of former President Mrs. Janet Jagan. Born in Chicago, USA, on October 20, 1920, she left her country at a relatively young age to join her husband in a struggle that would change the power dynamics of the then British colony to one of internal self-government and then to full political independence status.

She co-founded the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) in 1946 and four years later, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in 1950, which remains the dominant political party until today.

Janet Jagan stands tall among the great women of history. She was named by the TIME Magazine as one of 16 of the most ‘rebellious’ women in world history.

It is important to put into perspective the term ‘rebellious,’ which in no way conveys any negative connotation, but was meant to recognise the role played by her in challenging the then colonial status quo which was in the main oppressive and anti-people.

The important point to note is that the recognition of the TIME magazine was not limited to this century, but went back to past history which makes the citation all the more historically significant.

Other popular names mentioned by the magazine’s citation included Aung San Suu

Kyi, whose democratically elected government was overthrown by the military junta and who had earlier spent 15 years under house arrest. Others named were Jian Suing, wife of former Mao Zedong and Phoolam Devi, who became famous for taking up the plight of India’s ‘untouchables’ and earned in the process the nickname ‘Bandit Queen.’

The PPP, of which she was a founder-member, and the Guyanese people in general, have been lifted by such a recognition. It is unfortunate that she did not live to experience how the world felt about her and her contribution to world history.

The TIME citation ranked Mrs Jagan among historical figures such as Joan of Arc, a 15th century French peasant girl who fought against the British and who played a key role in the lifting of the siege of Orleans.

Joan was eventually burnt at the stake by the British for ‘heresy,’ but was later cannonized by the Vatican.

In the case of Mrs Jagan, the citation read in part: ‘For Chicago born Janet Jagan, the vibrant Labour struggles in the mid-20th century of her own country was not enough.

After falling in love with Cheddi Jagan, a Guyanese dentistry student at Northwestern, Janet followed her future husband, with Lenin’s writings in hand, to his homeland in 1943. Setting up a shop as a dental assis-

tant, she set on a path that would lead her to becoming Guyana’s first woman President.

In 1950, she and her husband formed the People’s Progressive Party which sought to promote Marxist ideals as well as decolonization from the United Kingdom. Strikes by domestic workers in what was then referred to as ‘British Guiana in the late 1940s, had been inspired by the Jagans and the movement attracted the ire of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who put the Jagans in jail.

But Jagan proved to be a political survivor, remaining in the game despite various attempts to politically purge her from leadership roles.

The citation by the TIME Magazine provides a panoramic view of the epic struggles waged by Mrs Jagan and her husband Cheddi for the liberation of Guyana from the yoke of colonialism, and later from the tentacles of PNC dictatorial rule. This is why the PPP, of which they were both founding members, remains wedded to the ideas and ideals which they passionately embraced and defended throughout their political life.

Despite her undoubted bravery and extraordinary courage, there was also a softer side grounded in her simplicity, integrity and her love for humanity. She was a people’s

person who often would go out of her way to help those in need.

Apart from her active political life, she also found time to write and was Editor of the Mirror and Thunder, her party’s theoretical organ. She also wrote several children’s stories. These are stories with strong moral and ethical overtones, of good over evil and justice over injustice, which in fundamental ways, reflected her own personality and character.

Like all mortals, age in the end had taken its toll and slowed her down. She resigned from the presidency before the end of her tenure because of failing health, but she remained committed right to the very end for the cause of a strong, cohesive and prosperous Guyana.

To say that Mrs Jagan has made her contribution to her party and country would be an understatement. She helped to shape the political and social landscape of Guyana in fundamental ways, and in the process, transformed the lives of Guyanese in deeply profound ways.

Like her husband, Mrs Jagan never had an easy life, but they never sought an easy life. She endured several hardships in her life, including being jailed by the British colonial administration and being ‘vilified’ by the PNC regime because of her ‘whiteness,’ but she took them all in stride without malice or ill-will, which spoke highly of the nobility of her spirit and character.

A Guyanese leader, indeed a world icon, had departed the world stage 13years ago, but her vision of a better and more humane society continues to influence the thinking of the PPP and the PPP/C administration.

It was the right move to remove Marlan Cole Dear Editor, AS usual, in everything we do, there will be agreement or disagreement, and my recent letter calling for the removal of certain persons holding onto office and not functioning properly caused quite a few people to voice their opinion towards me personally.

I’ve never been scared to express my concerns anywhere, so my defence was if you don’t want a president to hold onto power for over two terms (10 years), why

should they hold a position for longer than that period?

Aren’t they denying others from getting an equal opportunity? No doubt, even though new ones could be or get corrupted, they might have new ideas.

Editor, repeatedly I’ve questioned why are we getting food items that are expiring or close to being expired and at a very high price in this country.

I must say I welcome the move that has been made against Dr Marlan Cole, the former Director of the Government Ana-

Over the years, he’s been involved in too many conflicts, which to my mind, is an abuse of his powers. There are other places that the government should take full control of.

Developed nations must pull plug on oil production first – int’l report

AS efforts continue to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius, wealthy oil-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Norway and the United States, must be the first to cease operations.

This is according to an international report recently published by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

The 78-page document, titled ‘Phase-out Pathways for Fossil Fuel Production,’ went on to say that once the oil giants have exited the global market, poorer countries must be allowed to continue production at least until 2050, in an effort to replace that source of critical income; that too, with international support for a smooth transition.

Although not mentioned specifically in the report, the latter referenced countries would include nations such as Guyana, which has only now begun to directly benefit from its oil resources.

The report, compiled by scientists, Professor Kevin Anderson and Dr Dan Calverley, was specific on making recommendations that would allow for achievement of the

climate targets set out under the Paris Agreement, and essentially echoes the stance taken by Guyana.

It was Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo who previously said that even if the global net-zero carbon emission targets are met by 2050, the world will still need to be supplied with up to 24 million barrels of oil per day; Guyana, he asserted, has every intention of positioning itself as a deserving long-term oil producer.

“The developed world has done its bit,” Jagdeo had said, alluding to the fact that even though first world countries are the leading carbon emitters and polluters of the environment, small and developing nations such as Guyana are the ones suffering the brunt of the consequences stemming from destructive hurricanes and earthquakes, to disastrous floods and droughts.

Jagdeo, dubbed a ‘Champion of the Earth’ for his efforts to fight against climate change, has said that over the years, Guyana has dutifully served the earth as a net carbon sink, and that it now deserves to be able to maximise its oil resources to improve the country and the lives of its people.

Meanwhile, an article published by OilNow, specified that for a 50 per cent chance of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 degree Celsius, the 19 Highest-Capacity countries, with average non-oil gross domestic product per person (GDP/capita) of over US$50,000, must end produc-

tion by 2034, with a 74 per cent cut at least by 2030.

“This group produces 35 per cent of global oil and gas and includes the United Kingdom (UK), USA, Norway, Canada, Australia and the United Arab Emirates,” the article noted.

Further, it stated that four high-capacity countries, with average non-oil GDP/capita of nearly US$28,000, must end production by 2039, with a 43 per cent cut by 2030.

They produce 30 per cent of global oil and gas and include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Kazakhstan.

Moreover, 11 medium-capacity countries, with average non-oil GDP/capita of US$17,000, must end production by 2043, with a 28 per cent cut by 2030.

It goes further to state that 19 low-capacity countries, with average non-oil GDP/ capita of US$10,000, must end production by 2045, with an 18 per cent cut by 2030.

“Additionally, 25 lowest-capacity countries, with average non-oil GDP/capita of US$3,600, must end production by 2050 with a 14% cut by 2030. They produce 11% of global oil and gas and include Iraq, Libya, Angola and South Sudan,” the article said.

Large-scale poultry project for Pakuri

PRESIDENT, Dr. Irfaan Ali, on Saturday, announced that, as part of his government’s economic development programme, a large-scale poultry hatchery and egg production project has been earmarked for Pakuri Village, formerly St. Cuthbert’s Mission.

The Head of State made the announcement during his address at Pakuri’s Village Day celebrations in observance of its 133rd anniversary.

President Ali said that the project would be one of the largest of its kind in the country, and will satisfy the demands of the local market and the local poultry producers. He also made reference to the large consumption of eggs at the regional level and about its constant demand on the market.

“We are talking about the production, annually of more than 30 million eggs to be part of the regional

system. All of which is imported today.”

The need for poultry production was evident, according to the President, since prices have continuously increased with a supply that has been restricted due to current global challenges. According to President Ali, the only way for Guyana to curtail the effects caused by current global events is to become self-sufficient.

“That is the goal. To work with this community in being the leading hatchery and hatching egg producer in our country.”

The President explained that the government will bring together the private sector and the community in the coming week to advance discussions.

He stated that once the two sides come to an agreement, the government will embrace the project with the aim of large-scale production within the next 18 months.

“We can be self-sufficient in producing our own hatching eggs.”

TOURISM AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT In his address, the Head of State also reiterated his government’s commitment to ‘One Guyana’ and its quest to ensure key infrastructure development to facilitate a modern society with a solid tourism product.

He told residents that they have an excellent tourism product, which the government will help to develop. To this end, the Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud and the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai were tasked to examine the main road network in the community.

President Ali said that “we are going to identify

Additionally, the government will also invest in bolstering internet connectivity, education, training, and development to ensure that every child has “the best shot possible at life.”

In this regard, the President stated that the Government of Guyana has signed an agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the potential of providing training in coding at the primary school

level and basic software development training at the secondary school level.

“These are the initiatives that will transform the country,” the President stated while adding that investments are critical to ensure that Guyana’s children “get a better shot at life.”

He also alluded to a number of measures that have been implemented that are positively benefitting thousands of learners across the country.

a quantity of sport gear to Toshao of Pakuri, Timothy Andrews. In addition, $500,000 was handed over for a project of the community’s choosing that will benefit its children.

In honour of the visit, the President was presented with tokens of appreciation.

300 pupils to benefit from nutritional enhancement programme

THREE hundred pupils in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) will be benefitting from a nutritional enhancement programme which will provide a “nutritious lunch” every school day.

The programme was recently launched by Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. through the St Francis Community Developers at the Albion Chapel Basketball Court and Skills Training Centre at Fyrish Village.

While the programme targets pupils from six primary schools across the region, it will be implemented at six centres which are equipped with the necessary resources to cater to the needs.

These centres are situated in close proximity of each school at FACT Group, Corriverton; Eversham Community Developers; Shining Star Community Developers at Limlair Village; Mibicuri Community Developers at St Marks Mother’s Union at Alness Village and at the Albion Chapel Life Skills and Training Centre.

Plans are also on stream to expand the project to New

Amsterdam, Canje and Port Mourant with further plans to target 500 children by the end of 2022.

Addressing attendees at the launch was Senior Project Officer, Food for the Poor Guyana, Andrea Benjamin, who noted [that] oftentimes when someone thinks of barriers to education, they do not think about food or food insecurity.

She said that was a major barrier for vulnerable families and children’s access to education.

“We are hearing the term nutritional centres, but I want you to associate it with education because that is the purpose. These are not just centres developed to feed children. These centres were developed to promote education, to encourage attendance, and to encourage improved academic performance,” Benjamin said.

According to her, the project will run for one academic year and she anticipates a positive outcome.

“On every school day, from Monday to Friday, these 300 pupils will be assured a hot nutritious meal

during the lunch period, for one academic year and we know that, based on the impact that is expected, we are going to seek funding for the programme to continue.

“We anticipate at the end of the programme, we are going to see that our students’ grades and attendance would have improved.” Meanwhile, Regional Chairman, David Armogan, spoke about the work that Food for the Poor had been undertaking; he pointed out that it had transformed the lives of many.

Little Dilon Edwards has an enlarged heart and a swollen lung. The child also has a hole in his heart which has exacerbated his condition.

His parents were recently informed that Dilon needs to undergo surgery by the end of this month because his condition is worsening and could even be fatal if left unaddressed.

According to his mother, her son’s condition is worsening as the days go by.

“He’s getting worse; every day he is in pain. He cries out a lot now in the nights, like 3 o’clock in the morning. He has shortness of breath; he has pains in his chest and pain in his belly,” the worried mother told this publication.

Dilon’s physical movement has been affected, since he suffers from shortness of breath; this leaves him dependent on an oxygen tank to breathe.

The sum of U.S.$11,000 (approximately GY$2.2 million) is needed to fund the surgery in New York or Holland. So far, the parents have received just over GY$900,000 from generous donors.

The lad is also unable to attend school due to his condition and, according to his mother, he has never lived the life of a normal boy, since most of his time was occupied with doctors and hospital visits.

This, she related, has not been easy, especially since her youngest child is a two-yearold who requires a lot of attention.

Work moving apace on $648 million Fire Service HQ CONSTRUCTION is currently ongoing at the $648 million Fire Service Headquarters with some 20 per cent of works completed thus far and the contractors are expected to meet the April 2023 deadline.

The major investment will see the relocation of the Central Fire Station from its Stabroek Market location, due to the massive congestion in that area, to Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.

In 2021, Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, disclosed plans to have the headquarters relocated to Homestretch Avenue to promote easier access as well as to accommodate the new firefighting resources procured by the government.

He said that,with the new equipment being brought in, a new layout is needed as well as modern architecture, to improve the efficiency of the fire service.

The new fire station is being built on three and a half acres of land. The relocation of the Central Fire Station has been a topic of discussion for some years now. It was recognised that the Stabroek Market area had been radically transformed since the fire station was constructed

and the future development of the area was also a factor that led to the decision to relocate the fire station.

Minister Benn had also disclosed that the maintenance sections for the fire tenders will also be moved from the West Ruimveldt Fire Station to Homestretch Avenue so that the main activities of the fire service will be in one place.

“There were congestion issues at Stabroek and the government has been bringing in new assets, new fire trucks, and so on. There are also the emergency management system and the ambulances so we know that there is a need for more space.

Also, there is a consideration that the city itself has been expanding eastwards and southwards so the location at Durban Park will help to provide a better balance in terms of being able to reach some locations,” Minister Benn had said.

In the 2022 budget, the sum of $47.9 billion is allocated to the security sector, $100 million is allocated for installation and repairs of fire hydrants across the country, in order to ensure adequate water supplies in the event of a fire.

If you have a Tween, read this

THE word ‘tween’ is the modern-day definition for pre-adolescence; a tween is any child between 8 and 12 years. During this stage of childhood, physical and mental changes begin to occur.

Some primary school girls shoot up (with a growth spurt) and start developing breasts.

Although the child may look and feel awkward in his/her changing body, adults can help by reassuring the tween that

the transition is natural.

Adults need to prepare their ‘tween’ for other changes over the coming years and help them create a hygiene regime that will keep them feeling confident and healthy.

Children need to learn about personal hygiene as early as they can understand; it prevents them from getting ill and catching germs.

Washing hands after using the toilet is basic hygiene. Encourage children to wash their hands

after touching pets, playing outdoors, before they eat, and at appropriate intervals. They should brush their teeth at least twice a day, bathe at least once, and up to three times a day if necessary (especially after exertion or exercise).

For some children, there comes a time when they do not take their hygiene seriously. Some children lie about brushing their teeth or pretend to have bathed, but their back is as dry as a bone

when they exit the shower. It doesn’t matter to them if their teeth are yellow and fuzzy, whether they have worn the same clothes for three days, or if they smell funky.

Parents must not let this type of behaviour get out of hand -they must explain to tweens the necessity of good hygiene and why it is part of our daily routine.

If parents must monitor children for a while, so be it, until the message sinks in. It may call for someone standing by the bathroom door as they enter and checking their back and shoulders for evidence when they leave. Do it if you have to parents, but make sure they bathe!

While their bodies grow and change, so should their hygiene routines, which may mean brushing teeth more frequently, showering and changing clothes more often, and wearing deodorant. Tween bodies produce sweat glands where none were before - in their armpits, groin and feet; this opens up a whole new smelly experience.

Parents should ensure that children are used to feeling fresh, clean, healthy and self-assured.

They should not have to worry about running out of deodorant or not having clean undies. Parents, please remind tweens that deodorant goes on after they bathe and is not applied to mask the smell of sweaty armpits.

Children must have a good set of underwear to choose from, so they can change whenever they need to, without fear of running out of clean, fresh undergarments.

Tween girls may need a few training bras when their breasts develop.

Mothers, aunties, grannies and big sisters usu-

ally know when the time is right to buy these, but don’t turn the occasion into a drama and make the tween feel awkward about maturing - body development is natural.

When girls start developing breasts, Parents should acknowledge the same discreetly, instead of drawing everyone’s attention to the fact and talking about the same on the phone with friends and family.

It can be embarrassing for children when their developing bodies are the topic of conversation or the brunt of grown-up humour. Developing children have enough to deal with without thoughtless parents having ‘kicks’ at their expense or blabbing their business. Personal stages of tween development need to be handled tactfully by parents.

Tweens need sensible adults they can talk to - adults who answer their questions ‘downto-earth’, adults who guide them with unconditional love, non-judgement and understanding.

Entering puberty can be particularly hard for girls who are, one moment climbing trees and playing ‘ketcha’ and the next, having to deal with stomach cramps and periods. Mothers, guardians or carers must supply a good stock of sanitary towels and teach girls why same should be changed regularly and disposed of hygienically.

Accidents can happen while girls are coming to terms with this new aspect of their feminine existence. But don’t blow things out of proportion or make a scene if they do. Try to deal rationally with any incidents that occur; show consideration. It takes some girls longer than others to get used to monthly periods.

Boys produce sperm and start to ejaculate between 11 and 15 years.

However, it could happen to boys as young as 10 years old. Night-time ejaculations are known as ‘wet dreams’. It may be more appropriate for men to discuss sperm, erections, and ejaculations with boys rather than women.

For example, the brain instigates erections; they are not dirty or disgraceful, but boys need to learn tact and diplomacy. In time they will learn to care for, and control their bodies. Men can teach this better than women. When talking to tween boys, the approach taken needs to be simple, friendly and open -allow them to ask questions.

It is better to have things out in the open and discuss puberty with tweens before they are in the thick of things. Parents can lead up to it over the years by pointing out the inevitable transition that all humans experience.

This approach might be better than loading all the information into one ‘tween’ conversation, which might be overwhelming.

Tweens may know a great deal already from their peers or older siblings. However, it is always best when parents make the first move and initiate those all-important conversations that show they care.

Hair rules: Education Minister meets with stakeholders

THE Ministry of Education is continuing the conversation to review the rules and guidelines regarding hairstyles for children in school.

On Saturday, Minister of Education,

Education Minister, Priya Manickchand Priya Manickchand, hosted a roundtable discussion with several stakeholders in the ministry’s boardroom aimed at overhauling archaic school rules which disproportionately affect learners.

“The Ministry of Education does not have any rules regarding hairstyles. It is the schools that make and enforce the rules,” a press release from the Education Ministry

noted.

The conversation started after it was found that children were being sent home for trivial matters such as their hair. Minister Manickchand highlighted that this is counterproductive to the efforts being made by the ministry under ‘Operation Recovery’ to ensure students are back in the classrooms receiving an education.

Earlier this month, the decision was made to allow female students and teachers wear their hair how they choose to for one day in observance of International Women’s Day 2022. This announcement sparked a widespread debate on social media and triggered a national conversation.

During the engagement, it was noted that while the Afro-Guyanese girls are more affected by the rules, they affect all children.

Many of the persons present lamented that not only are the hair rules restrictive, but they also have a greater negative impact on students. It was noted that children’s rights and self-esteem must be considered.

In examining rules governing hairstyles from several schools across the country, it was highlighted that many of them are impractical and limit individuality and self-expression.

As the conversation continues, it was noted that there is a need for education and understanding, particularly across cultures as well as a wider societal change. The par-

The facility was officially commissioned by the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal who was accompanied by Regional Chairman, Brentnol Ashley.

In the 2022 budget, the government allocated $29.4 billion for the energy sector.

This allocation has been touted as one of the first steps to rapidly accelerate Guyana’s transition to cleaner sources of energy, while boosting its capacity to meet the growing demand for affordable and stable electricity over the next five years.

Several hinterland areas can expect to benefit significantly from this allocation as over $450 million has been budgeted for the expansion and upgrading of the hinterland electrification and power generation capacity, through the purchase of generators and the expansion of distribution lines.

The government has contended that this solar mini-grid and off-grid solutions are the country’s most viable options to ensure unserved and underserved hinterland regions are energised.

Meanwhile, the government, throughout 2022, will be distributing and installing, for free, over 22,000 LED bulbs and over 12,000 LED tubes at homes, business places and government buildings at Bartica, Linden, Leguan, and Wakenaam.

The initiative, which is part of the government’s plans to reduce the country’s carbon footprint, is anticipated to remove over 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the environment.

Stakeholders in discussion with the Education Minister, Priya Manickchand ticipants were urged to continue the conversation through various means. Discussions both for and against the archaic hair rules are welcome as it would guide future rules.

The Ministry of Education will soon be meeting with educators to continue the conversation to ensure a comprehensive decision is made.

More money for road safety council to curb road deaths

THE government, in its effort to curb road accidents, has increased the financial resources given to the Guyana National Road Safety Council from $3 million to over $11 million.

In 2021, the Guyana Police Force recorded a 30 per cent decrease in fatal accidents and the government is hopeful that the increase in financial support can further reduce road fatalities.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, made the disclosure as he addressed the National Road Safety Stakeholders Forum on Friday last.

Minister Benn also called for the change in behaviour of road users so that the financial responses could be redirected to other areas of development. He said a change in culture in the way public transportation operates must be in line with the development that is ongoing in the country.

He said driving under the influence, careless use of the roads by pedestrians, speeding and motor cyclists not wearing helmets remain the main causes of fatal accidents.

Teen dies in Craig accident NINETEEN-year-old Sachin Persaud of Lot 69 Avenue ‘A’ Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), became one of the latest road fatalities following an accident on the Craig Public Road, EBD, on Saturday night.

According to the police, two vehicles were involved in the accident. Persaud was a pedestrian at the time.

According to the initial reports, 47-year-old Lesie Griffith, the driver of motor car PXX 2746 who was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the Craig Public Road, alleged that, while in the vicinity of Natram’s General Store, he observed two pedestrians crossing the road from east to west in front of him.

On seeing that, he said he applied brakes and swerved east to avoid a collision, but due to the short distance, the left side rear view mirror on his vehicle collided with one of them.

Additionally, 49-year-old Vanburn Milo, the driver of motorcar # PXX 8548 told traffic ranks that he was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane of the said road, in the vicinity of Natram’s General Store, when he noticed two motorcars swerving east into his path.

On seeing that, he said he applied brakes and swerved west onto the western drive lane of the said road to avoid a collision with the said vehicles. In doing so, he felt as though the front of his vehicle had run over something and he immediately stopped to investigate.

Upon checking, he observed that he had run over a male pedestrian who was lying motionless underneath his vehicle.

The ambulance service was summoned from the Diamond Fire Station. The team of Emergency Medical Technicians headed by Dr. Reid, upon arrival at the scene shortly after the accident, checked and examined the pedestrian and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Persaud’s body is presently lying at Carmen’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Notices of intended prosecution have been prepared and served on both drivers.

A breathalyzer test conducted on them both found no trace of alcohol in their systems.

They both remain in custody assisting with the investigations.

Plans moving apace for inaugural Agriculture Investment Forum –– partnerships between local farmers and investors anticipated

WITH a committee already formed, plans are moving apace for the hosting of the first Agriculture Investment Forum in Guyana, according to Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha.

Minister Mustapha, who is heading the committee, in an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, disclosed that several arrangements have already been put in place for the forum which is slated to be held from May 19 to May 21.

“We have completed a planning meeting; I am chairing the committee and I think we are well on our way to getting that programme off. There are a number of arrangements in place already,” he said.

“The process is moving apace and I’m very optimistic that we will be having a large and successful investment forum in Guyana,” Minister Mustapha added.

He said that the committee is now looking for sponsorship from local stakeholders and those in the Caribbean region and other parts of the world.

“We are now looking at sponsorship. We are having people from the Caribbean; we have sent out letters to

Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha various interested stakeholders in the Caribbean and other parts of the world. So, I’m hoping that this investment forum, will be a forum that will propel Guyana in terms of people coming to invest in Guyana and other parts of the Caribbean,” he said.

On another note, the minister stated that the investment forum will be a benefit for both farmers, agriculture stakeholders and investors.

“This will be very good for farmers because what we are doing will see investors

partnering with local farmers to ensure that they build capacity in terms of finance, so that they can increase their farming input and increase production,” he said.

He added that the forum will also give local famers a chance to become investors themselves.

“At the same time, it will help farmers so they can become investors themselves. They have the assets already; they just need the financing. This investment forum will help to catapult that investment.”

Plans for hosting the investment forum was announced by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, during a media briefing at the 33rd Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Belize earlier this month.

At the conference, PM Mottley stated that it was a necessary prerequisite to promote investments in the agriculture sector.

The forum is also a part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)’s decisive steps to reduce its US$5 billion food import bill by 25 per cent in the next five years (25 by 25).

Keep the lights on –– PM tells Lethem Power Company

PRIME MINISTER, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips says the Lethem Power Company (LPC) will not be increasing its rates for electricity despite a consistent rise in the cost of fuel.

The senior government official travelled to Lethem, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine), on Saturday, where he held a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors of the LPC to discuss the company’s financial position.

He then held separate meetings with the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the residents of Lethem where he assured them that the government would continue to subsidise

LPC to cushion the rise in fuel prices.

“The high cost of living is affecting all of us and that is why the government has decided that we will not increase electricity. [The] government will have to intervene and cover those increase in prices of fuel— that is what a responsible government would do in a situation like this.”

However, the Prime Minister disclosed that many residents were not honouring their commitment to the utility company by paying for the electricity they consume.

He said that while he instructed the power company to keep the lights on, residents must honour their

obligations by first paying their last bill before working on an arrears payment plan for the other missed bills.

“In order to keep the lights on, you have to pay the bills. Meet with the management of the Lethem Power Company and work out an arrears payment plan so you can clear your arrears. You have a government that will continue to be sensitive to all the issues affecting the people in Guyana, a government that will continue to listen and to work with you to make decisions, so that we could continue to move forward and develop Guyana in a way that we could improve the lives and livelihood of the people.

“We are doing our part

Additionally, he visited a recently constructed one megawatt solar farm annexed to the Lethem Power Company which is expected to be operational from June of this year.

He said that the government continues to work assiduously to develop the

infrastructure of the growing town.

GPF records 17 per cent drop in fatal accidents

AS government continues to invest heavily in the public infrastructure of the country, as well as the implementation of systems to curb improper road use, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a 17 per cent decrease in fatal accidents for January to March 2022, when compared with the same period last year.

This disclosure was made at the National Road Safety Stakeholders Forum held on Friday, March 25, 2022.

According to the statistics presented, there were 20 fatal accidents with 26 deaths from January 1 to March 24, 2022, compared to 24 fatal accidents with 25 deaths for the same period in 2021.

The president noted that although this will be a costly investment, it is absolutely essential to stem the road carnage.

“On all our new highways, we are going to incorporate this feature where we can move towards digital ticketing and recognition in terms of speeding, in terms of seatbelt violations and so on; and that system must be automatically linked to the suspension of licence[s] and

so on,” President Ali stated.

He added that with Guyana on a fast-growth trajectory, systems must be put in place to ensure the safety of Guyanese, visitors and persons interested in investing in Guyana.

“Aggregate investments, both private and public, are increasing; citizens are investing in new homes, cars

and other personal belongings; businesses are expanding; those making these investments are doing so with the understanding that the country will boost security to protect them and their investments,” President Ali stated.

The efforts of the GPF are expected to see a significant boost this year with the government’s allocation of

$4.9 billion to improve the operations of the force.

Of this sum, $2.5 billion has been allocated to expand the Safe City Programme beyond the boundaries of Georgetown.

This investment will see the entire country being connected to CCTV cameras and monitored centrally, as well as at Regional Command

Centres to be established across the country.

With the government’s plans to modernise the force, $120 million has been budgeted for the training of ranks in the areas of crime and traffic management, while additional ranks will be added to ensure greater coverage across communities.

Cop dies in Lusignan accident

AN accident on Saturday night claimed the life of Police Sergeant, Kwame Kellman, 34, who was stationed at the Grove Police Station on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

Police Headquarters reported that Kellman was driving east in motorcar PYY 3730 on the northern side of the road when he lost control and crashed into a shop on the Lusignan Public Road, ECD at about 23:55hrs.

The car that was involved in the early morning accident the death of 66-year-old Fiuz Hussain, a resident of the same village.

In police custody is 44-year-old Mahendranauth Soogrim Sucree of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, who was driving the car (PMM 3502) at the time of the accident.

Police Headquarters reported that the car was proceeding west and it is alleged, by the driver, that he saw the pedestrian walking on the southern parapet of the road, while on his cellphone, at about 05:30hrs.

Hearn ready to turn Josh Warrington’s American dream into reality EDDIE Hearn has warned Las Vegas to get ready for a “wild” night of boxing after Josh Warrington regained the IBF featherweight crown.

Two more cricket clubs receive support from Project ‘Cricket Gear’

TWO junior cricket teams -- Die Hard CC of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, and the rapidly rising Rose Hall Community Centre CC, of Canefield, in East Berbice, each received one box of red cricket balls.

This initiative is a joint effort between Anil Beharry of Guyana and Kishan Das of the USA. The balls were handed over to the clubs over the weekend.

Speaking on behalf of the initiative, Beharry said that he is truly impressed with the rapid rise of both teams.

He added that RHCCCC has already qualified for the BCB/Tenelec Under-15 final while Cotton Tree Die Hard were knocked out in their semi-final against traditional power-house, Port Mourant CC. Beharry also noted that Cotton Tree Die Hard have played in their first-ever Under-15 BCB cricket competition. In response, Ro-

shan Gaffoor of Cotton Tree Die Hard and Dr Beharry of RHCCCC commended the initiative and promised to continue to develop young cricketers.

Both teams have been producing quality young cricketers with Adrian Hetmyer, son of former National Under-19 batsman, Seon and nephew of IPL-bound Shimron, leading the way with three centuries in the competition so far.

“We are hopeful that a new breed of young players will come through the system, making Guyana and West Indies cricket strong again. Sports in general helps to keep our young people off the streets and is an avenue to a better life,” Beharry highlighted.

Following two draws in the first couple of Tests, a superb performance from the hosts on day three and day four overwhelmed the tourists and led to a 10-wicket victory to take the series 1-0.

JOE Root has reiterated his desire to remain England captain after his side’s series defeat by West Indies.

Root, who has been captain since 2017, has now overseen four series defeats in a row, this loss coming on the back of the 4-0 Ashes humbling by Australia.

“It is a punch to take because for the majority of this series we have played so much good cricket,” Root told BBC Sport.

“It’s a big frustration. We have put so much into this trip and I think our attitude has been exceptional - you can see it is clear as day there has been a big shift forward in a number of areas.

“It is a body blow what happened yesterday but we have to take it on the chin and learn and not forget a lot of the good things we have done until now.

“The guys have worked so hard and done so much good stuff throughout and some poor decision making and, at times a lack of skill, has probably just let us down when we really needed to stand up.”(BBC Sport)

SFSCL three-day tournament bowls off Thursday …22 teams vying for supremacy

By Frederick Halley THE 16th edition of the South Florida Softball Cricket League (SFSCL) tournament is set to bowl off on Thursday at three venues across the Sunshine State.

Some 22 teams, featuring eight in both the All Stars Open and Masters Over-40 and six in the Legends Over-50 are slated to vie for supremacy in the three-day extravaganza.

The All Stars and Masters Divisions will comprise two groups which will be based on a random number pulled at the draw. Each team will play a total of three preliminary 20-overs game. The top two teams from each zone will play in the semi-finals with the two winners advancing to Saturday’s final.

The Legends Division will also feature two groups which will be done from a random number pulled at tonight’s (Monday) draw. Each team will play a total of three preliminary 20-over games. Teams will however play teams outside

their zone, after which the two top teams in each zone will play in the semi-finals. Playoffs will be within your zone, with the two winners clashing in Saturday’s final.

All three finals will take place at Brian Picollo Park while preliminary round matches are set for the Central Broward Regional Park (CBRP) and Oswald Park.

The welcome meeting will be held on Wednesday, starting at 20.00 hrs at Tropics Restaurant and Nightclub, 7100 Hollywood Blvd, Pembroke Pines.

Hard copies of the SFSCL brochures will be distributed along with scoresheets, pens and clipboards for scoring. The Florida Cup magazine will be handed out as well while final roster changes will be permitted.

According to SFSCL President Dave Singh, the Florida Cup tournament presents an excellent opportunity for players from all softball cricket leagues to participate in a world-class tournament, held in the

beautiful sunshine state of Florida.

In a marathon innings lasting 257 balls, the 23-year-old da Silva scored 100 not out as the West Indies chasing England’s first innings score of 204, made 297 all out in the third and final Apex test in Grenada.

For Lara, it was a joy to watch.

“The discipline and mental strength this young man showed was admirable. The partnerships with the lower order to get us into this winning position is what Test cricket is all about,” said Lara, who is

currently in India as the batting coach for IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The man who scored a mammoth 11953 runs from 131 Tests for the West Indies also lavished praise for da Silva’s teammates as well.

“It will be remiss of me not to congratulate all the batters and bowlers that fought throughout the series culminating into this on the brink of a series win against England.

I salute the captain for his tenacity throughout the series with the bat and his leadership,” said the proud West Indies icon.

“To all players and staff, I commend you and at the same time urge you to continue working on having the appetite to go out there on the battlefield for all five days of a Test match giving your all each and every single time you don the burgundy cap. At the end, you will lose some, draw some and win a lot more but more importantly, you will understand what Test cricket is all about.”

Barry says players eager for cricket, ahead of GCA/GISE/Star Rental/Trophy Stall 1st Division 2-day tourney

PRESIDENT of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), Neil Barry Snr, said teams and players alike are elated over the return of cricket, as they prepare for the 2022 General Industrial and Supplies Enterprise (GISE) Star Rental/ Trophy Stall 2-Day 1st division tournament.

Speaking with the Chronicle Sport on Friday last, the GCB boss quickly noted that it was great to see the response from the teams/players, whom he described as ‘anxious’ when referring to their stance regarding the upcoming competition, which was officially launched last Tuesday.

“The teams and players are anxious to play some cricket and they are happy we have launched the tournament so quickly”, added Barry, who went on to say that most of the boxes are already ticked but the GCA is currently monitoring the position of the respective venues which are expected to host the matches.

Barry noted that some

of the venues are not yet fully prepared but are in the process of being fine-tuned with regard to cutting of any excess grass, re-rolling of pitches and any all-round finishing touches which are

As such, the former Guyana player cum administrator said he was confident that by April, all systems will be in place for action, as it is within the hopes of the GCA to complete this year’s edition of the tournament, minus any hiccups.

With a number of teams set to be involved in this year’s tourney, Barry said he wants to work closely with the other clubs across the City. He noted it was important for clubs to remain engaged while coming up with the necessary moves which will ensure that each club is sustained across all facets.

Barry further outlined that this year’s competition will not be going zonal, but rather each team will play 8 rounds of mouth-watering cricket against each other, and something he said will provide a buffer for all the teams/cricketers involved.

As for the ever-looming threat of COVID-19, the GCA boss was adamant that clubs maintain the necessary safety guidelines while calling on players to remain focused on their health while following the rules to ensure a safe environment for all. ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, (CMC) – Buoyant West Indies needed all of 90 minutes on Sunday as they crushed England by ten wickets inside four days to capture the first-ever Richards-Botham Trophy series.

Veteran seamer Kemar Roach (2-10) quite fittingly snatched the last two wickets to wrap up the England second innings for 120, after the tourists resumed the penultimate morning of the decisive third Test on 103 for eight – only ahead by 10 runs.

Requiring a mere 28 runs for victory, Captain Kraigg Brathwaite guided West Indies home with an unbeaten 20, as the hosts got over the line in just 29 balls, half-hour before the scheduled lunch interval.

“We had a camp from before the series and we sat down and decided this is one of our best series at home and we have to fight hard,” said Brathwaite, adjudged Man-of-the-Series for his 341 runs at an average of 85. “From the camp we put in a lot of work – four, five hours a day, six days a week – and from there it started.

“And it just carried through each game with someone new raising their hand and doing the job, whether in the field, with the ball or with the bat, or spending time.

“The effort was remarkable.”
