Moving up the ranks
Guyana-born Brigadier-General becomes first African American Land Component Commander in the state of Arkansas
Brigadier General Leland Tony Shepherd was born in Guyana and grew up in Station Street Kitty, Georgetown. He recently became the first African American to hold the title of 6th Land Component Commander for the Arkansas Army National Guard. Shepherd is proud of what he has achieved and states that, “People will be able to look at my story and say ‘A guy from Guyana who migrated can move through the ranks and become a general officer – a leader of the forces; I can do it too.’” (Photo courtesy of BG Leland Tony Shepherd)
