By Ariana Gordon HIGH Court Judge, Justice Franklyn Holder on Monday recused himself from hearing the Carvil Duncan case, saying that he had made the decision even before the Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo had expressed disquiet about him continuing the matter.

Before a packed courtroom. Justice Holder said. "I find that it will be pradent. judicious and in the interest of the administration of justice that I recuse myself from the case." Holder had accused Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams of being "disrespectful" and "insolent" in his court on March 23. 2017;a claim which the AG has dismissed. Williams did not attend court on Monday morning but instead was represented by Attorneys Judy Stuart and Coleen Liverpookboth of them lawyers within his chambers.

In a prepared speech, the High Court Judge told the attorneys that his decision to recuse himself from the case was not taken recently. He explained that his decision is not as a result of "skewed.

illogical and improper reasoning expressed by some and reported in the press.but is one deeply rooted in my recognition and appreciation of what is required in the circumstances and in the interest of the administration of justice." he added.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo. a party to the case, last week called on Williams to request that the Judge recuse himself as he fears he may not be given a fair hearing. In a letter released on Friday, the Prime Minister said "Due to an alleged incident between yourself and Mr. Justice Franklyn Holder in His Honour's court on March 23. 2017 in the above mentioned suit and His Honour's subsequent petition to the Honourable Chancellor against the Attorney General on the issue of the alleged incident. I am of the opinion that neither the State, nor 1. will receive fair hearing in the matter."

The Prime Minister believes that Justice Holder had the power to handle the alleged incident between himself and Williams amicably in Court, instead of

retiring to his chambers without a formal rising of the court. He also contends that the petition made by Justice Holder to the acting Chancellor for Williams to "compulsorily apologise in open court before continuation of the State's matter" as well as the forwarding of the said Petition by the acting Chancellor to the President who is also a party to the suit, would result in him being prejudiced in the matter.

On March 23. the last day of hearing in the Carvil Duncan matter, the Judge vacated his bench during an exchange between him and Williams without adjourning the matter. Since that incident, the Judge wrote the acting Chancellor on the matter and demanded that Williams apologise.as he was in contempt of court.

Justice Holder on Monday said his withdrawal from the bench without adjourning the case was in an effort to give both himself and Williams time to reflect.

He maintained his position that the Attorney General was disrespectful and stated that he did not err when he rose from the bench without

He said too that Williams as the head of the bar. attorney general and Senior Counsel was afforded enough time to reflect and apologise. "It was hoped that it would have allowed him time to reflect on his conduct and give him an opportunity to do what was fit and proper in the circumstances so as to avoid him bringing the administration of justice into disrepute." said Justice Holder. The Judge made it clear that the utterances made by the Attorney General and taken individually may not be deemed contemptuous but collectively represent a contempt of court.

"These statements of Mr. Williams that I have recounted.taken individually may be perceived as insolent behaviour and not necessarily contempt of Court. However, when considered collectively and within the time frame that they were made, these statements prima facie constitute contemptuous behaviour on his part." he added.

He made it clear that Williams has turned the issue into a political one when there was no need to and noted that the Attorney General instead of wearing another hat. moved weeks after the confrontation to "systematically flip the script and to spin this matter in a manner now common in other jurisdictions, to the extent that it has now in my respectful opinion become politicised and irretrievably infected with the perception of bias." said Justice Holder.

Judges are independent of politics and as such he stated emphatically that "The Court is not a forum for politicking" and must remain the guardian of the Constitution, objective and evidence-based.

Meanwhile, former Attorney General Anil Nandlall. attorney representing Duncan, expressed disappointment by the judge's actions noting that by way of his action the public perception of the judiciary would be skewed. "I am disappointed that he has done so. not because I have any interest in this judge continuing to hear the matter. because the appearance out there would be there that the judiciary buckled under executive pressure."

Additionally, the former AG said the appearance is sometimes as important as the reality and stressed that while the judge said his decision to recuse himself is not as a result of an application for him to so do. "the perception that would be convened is that the judiciary did not stand firm in this matter."

"But the opportunity still exists for the judge to exercise that exceptional power of contempt and kill that public perception," he added. That aside, he said he was happy the judge was firm, and unambiguous that the AG committed contempt in the face of the court and that as the judge in the matter, notwithstanding the fact that he came off the bench without citing the AG with contempt, he has the power to cite contempt when he deems it fit. "I am disappointed that the judge fell short in saying how he will exercise that power in relation to this incident," said Nandlall.

.. .President tells Arrival Day ceremony at Highbury NOTING that Arrival Day is a time for togetherness, President David Granger says his administration is committed to continue working towards solidifying the Guyanese society by strengthening the strands of the country's social strata.

At the same time the Head of State notes this year's celebration of Indian Arrival Day as significant, since its observance coincides with the centenary of the end of Indian indentured immigration. The President was at the time delivering the feature address at Plantation Highbury. Berbice. on Friday morning at the annual ceremony in commemoration of the 179th anniversary of the arrival of Indians to Guyana.

"Arrival Day is a time for coming together. All have contributed to nation-building. All have to embrace a common destiny, one in which diversity is respected." the President noted at the ceremony, which was attended by several government officials, including Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo; Minister of Business. Dominic Gaskin and Minister of Communities.

Ronald Bulkan. Regional Chairman. David Armogan and former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds also attended the event.

According to President

Granger. "Guyanese should commemorate the chapter in the country's history when its peoples arrived here. This date, this event, this place remind us of the value we all place both on our otherness and on our togetherness." he said.

According to the President. Arrival Day commemorates the transformation of the country by the people who came and these include the Africans. Chinese. Indians and Portuguese together with the Amerindians, whom he noted have lived here from time immemorial. "It transformed, also, the demography and the political economy of British Guiana." the President said.

He told the gathering that Arrival Day is a celebration of cohesion. "It might have been an accident of history that our peoples were brought together in such a spectacular manner more than a century and a half ago", he said. He noted however. that it was no accident that the citizens "had to work to weld the disparate peoples into a whole nation."

He added that social cohesion was not an automatic condition of contemporaneousness. but rather it was administered, "on the anvil of straggle." The President said that social cohesion had to be built, gradually and deliberately, from the com-

It is commendable that a Lands Commission is being operationalized to heal land woes that have gripped the country in recent times. Allegations had been made against the last government for allocating lands that were alleged to be African ancestral lands. In other cases, Amerindian lands were said to have been given out for mining, while some wealthy persons were able to access lands through dubious means.

Already some are rejecting the Land Commission, mostly because of misinformation being peddled to scare persons into believing that the government plans to take away their land.

There are numerous areas where the government has to work to provide the 'Good Life' that they promised Guyanese. They must however ensure the right players are in the game and not those who seek to sabotage the match.

"A Look At The Lives of some of the Great Political leaders of the Caribbean" to describe impartially what he observes from the record.

A Roll Call of Honour (my latest book) describes the careers of past political leaders of the British Caribbean and contemporary political developments of their respective counters. The thrust of my discourse is about Prime Ministers who were in office when their countries gained independence. However, I also discuss other politicians who were not in power when their countries gained independence; but whose contributions to the momentous events cannot be overlooked. Although Guyana and Belize are not Caribbean countries, they are included because they are members of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). Only Independent countries are discussed.

I decided to write this book, because I feel that enough has not been written about the great pioneers for British Caribbean freedom. Most of us know about the heroes from our individual countries; but little about the other great men from other countries of the Diaspora.

This is my contribution towards a greater understanding of those stalwarts — men who put their lives on the line for our independence.

ORIGINAL INHABITANTS Every island's pre-history is discussed. Long before Europeans or our foreparents came to the area now known as the Caribbean, it was inhabited by people from South America. They arrived in pre-historic times via the Bering Strait.

This Strait links the Arctic Ocean with the Bering Sea and separates the continents of Asia and North America at their closest point.

This is the prevailing opinion about aborigine migration to the Americas.

However, it should be noted that this theory is in direct contradiction to oral histories of many of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. They believe that they have lived in the Americas from the beginning.

I do not refer to these people as Indians or Amerindians (American Indians), because these are misnomers.

Columbus set out for Asia; but arrived in San Salvador, Bahamas. When European scholars recognised the error, they called the area around the Carib Sea "West Indies" to distinguish it from the East Indies. I refer to these inhabitants as aborigines, native people or indigenous people.

My book never use the term "black" to describe the slaves or their descendants. Instead it uses the term "African."

Each chapter discusses European colonisation, the struggle towards and achievement of. Independence.

POLITICAL HEROES I describe the successes and failures of our heroes. This is not an easy task, because many readers expect discussions of this nature to support their opinions.

ERROL BARROW Errol Walton "Dipper" Barrow was born in Nesfield, St. Lucy, Barbados, on lanuary 21, 1920. His father was Rev. Reginald Grant Barrow, an Anglican priest, who was removed from his posting on St. Croix for his controversial sermons against racism and social stratification.

His mother was Ruth Barrow (nee O'Neal), sister of Dr. Charles Duncan O'Neal. His sister, Dame Nita Ruth Barrow,

served as Governor-General of Barbados until her death on 19 December 19,1995.

It is situated on the Northern Coast of the Eastern angle of South America. FIRST INHABITANTS Guyana's first inhabitants were Warao Indigenous People, who migrated from Venezuela around 9,000 BCE. They are known as "boat people", because of their intimate connection to rivers and streams.

L.F.S. Burn ham Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was born on 20 February, 1923, in Kitty, now a part of Greater Georgetown, British Guiana. His father, James EtheT bert Burnham, was headmaster of Kitty Methodist School. His mother was Abigail Sampson, a housewife.

Forbes Burnham believed that the whole was greater than its parts and, at times, used a heavy hand against the people, who had become stubborn.

IN any democracy, Government meeting with the people, listening to their views and concerns and making a concerted effort to help them improve their stations in life constitute key measures in the scheme of good governance.

Even though bigger in size. Guyana is smaller in population size compared to some of our top sister Caricom member states, and with 90 per cent of the population concentrated on the coastland. frequent interactions should be a norm. Being a small nation and one which does not wield any great influence, developments in the international arena can negatively impact Guyana, and the Government must be able to communicate these implications to the people.

Communicating through the press has been the traditional way of getting information to the people, but meeting and grounding with the people is a means that should not be placed on the back burner, but should be made a priority.

Not so recently, the Government has been fanning out to different parts of the country, listening to the views, concerns and complaints of the people and has been offering solutions of its own. This is a most welcomed step in the right direction.

Time and time again governments in general make decisions. but sometimes without much consultation with the people and this has been a main source of their discontent, especially when they are adversely affected by decisions made. Frequent interactions with the people provide the avenue to alleviate some of these ill-feelings and open up a pathway to build genuine relationships and expand on gains made. This sort of rapport cannot be overstated as people generally when aggravated, gravitate to persons who would listen to them and an absence of the Government in the fields can prove to be an uphill task in effectively getting its message across.

People, regardless of where they sit on the fence, have concerns on matters that affect them, their families and communities. Even though Local Government Elections were held about tw o years ago after more than two decades, many are still concerned about the state of drainage, roads and bridges in their communities.

Most of these issues which should be dealt with at the regional level are not getting the attention they deserve. The manner in which their schools are managed, the operations of health centres in their communities and the negligence of

Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams made the disclosure on Sunday, during a grand celebration in Bartica to mark its first anniversary as a town.

"The Government has already moved to ensure the execution of the Green Plan. For instance, plans are already in motion for this town to have an independent company to produce electricity using renewable energy, as we are looking to move away from our dependence on fossil fuel." Minister Williams said to a cheering crowd.

The announcement comes at a time when the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has been battling to keep the lights on in Bartica. The power plant, situated on First Avenue. Bartica. in the heart of the commercial zone, has been a sore issue, not only because of its inability to supply the more than 14.000 residents with reliable electricity. but due to the fact that it is a constant source of pollution.

The new project, which will see the town being powered by renewable energy, will be executed under the Public Infrastructure Ministry. Last year, the Government, through the Public Infrastructure Ministry, had signalled its intention to establish a solar farm in Bartica under a build-own-and-transfer (BOOT) structure, to supply 1.5MWs of power to GPL's Bartica Grid, under a negotiated and agreed power-purchase agreement.

"Additionally, through the Office of Climate Change. Bartica was able to secure finance for renewable energy to power the Three Miles Secondary School as well as street lights." Minister Williams added.

While this call has been welcomed by many farmers and young people, as much as they do have an interest in getting into business, the majority lack the finance required to do so. This challenge is compounded by inadequate information on accessing financing and training.

These are matters which can be raised and discussed in some detail during the ministerial outreaches, since entrepreneurship is a key step in empowerment of the grassroots and beating back rural unemployment. Governments also do not have solutions for all the challenges of the country, and it is important that the masses are regularly engaged. The importance of the ministerial fanouts cannot be over elaborated.

But hatred for Barack Obama is so intense, and has so corrupted Republican thinking, that President Trump has spent almost all of his 100 days in office reversing and undoing Obama-era executive orders in a silly attempt to erase his historical impact and legacy, and pretend that "Obama was never President of the United States."

So this new "repeal and replace" bill is more about stoking the monumentally fragile and erratic ego of President Trump, and an attempt to "rescue and restore" Speaker Paul Ryan's plummeting prestige after a series of spectacular legislative blunders and failures.

It's also an object lesson in Republican hypocrisy and cronyism.

Today, Americans struggling with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses are expressing real fears

you consider the fact that the proposal for creating high-risk pools is also pure conjecture and pie-in-the-sty fantasy. Many ordinary Americans have said that before Obamacare if you were over age 50 and had any medical issues — which includes almost everyone in the United States — no insurer would sell you a policy.

Now, if this new bill becomes law, despite what Republicans are publicly saying, insurance companies will be able to refuse coverage for pre-existing conditions or sell policies at exorbitant prices well out of the reach of poor, working, and middle class Americans. Welcome to Donald Trump's 21st century world.

So the scramble by House Republican leaders to plaster over their repeal of Obamacare's pre-existing conditions provision is just a scurrilous smoke screen intended to dupe and hoodwink people into believing somehow that this legislation would protect them from the ravages of insurance companies. Pure Grenada Focuses on German Market Growth St. George's, Grenada) — Pure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean is experiencing year on year growth in the German market and the GTA is seeking more opportunities to increase its market share. In April, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) Patricia Maher visited Germany to meet with travel agents, tour operators and airlines that are Grenada's partners. The meeting with the decision makers of Condor Airlines was especially enlightening as Pure Grenada was commended for already being 20% ahead of its bookings last year.

The GTA CEO was able to meet with Head of Network Development Long Haul for Condor Airlines Wilken Bellmann and his Junior Manager Ruben Schmidt.

Coming out of that meeting it was agreed that focus should be placed on growing Winter season bookings.

CEO Maher says, " I was excited to hear that CONDOR is partnering with Caribbean Airlines and are in negotiations with LIAT for connecting flights. This is great news for us especially for Summer 2017. Germans can check-in Frankfurt and connect seamlessly with

Subsequently, meetings were held with key persons at Thomas Cook/Neckermann and DerTouristik/Meier's Weltreisen Tour Operators to discuss the promotion of destination Pure Grenada. Ideas were shared on how to reach the travel agents who sell long haul destinations through special mailings, cooperative advertising and increased roadshows.

As part of the visit, the CEO and German sales team representatives ensured that they paid visits to travel agents in Wiesbaden and at Frankfurt Airport to engage them on selling Grenada as a destination.

The selection of hotels in the catalogues were explained and the reasons why Germans would love the destination were highlighted. Ms. Maher is fluent in the German language and conducted all meetings and interviews in German.

President Donald Trump's doofus-cum-health-secretary Tom Price and the inept House Speaker Paul Ryan, the two guys that keep stitching these hastily conceived plans to sell to the American people keep embarrassing themselves and Mr. Trump at every turn.

The thing is that on BOTH sides of the political isle Democrats and Republicans are going at this healthcare thing wrong. Democrats are stupid to chortle at Republicans that keep shooting themselves in the foot because they believe, erroneously so, that the Affordable Care Act is somehow the panacea for all of the healthcare ills that bedevil America. They are the enablers of this damn fool quest. While the AC A is certainly more palatable than nothing at all it definitely falls short, way short, of the perfect solution to America's healthcare nightmare.

First of all its private healthcare and so the big insurance companies, no matter thenpublic posturing, are delighted to have access, unfettered access, to a windfall 40 million new customers and an estimated 10 million more that will be forced, yes, forced to buy healthcare or be "fined" (taxed) for not doing so. Republicans are about to push back on that but want to do away with perhaps the ONLY people-friendly, anti-insurance part of the law — the Essential Benefits Plan.

This is the part of the ACA that bars insurance companies from not insuring people — like pregnant women — because of pre-existing conditions.

Yes, the Affordable Care Act, the signature piece of legislation of President Barack Obama, hence the hatred of white Republicans, barely passes muster. It's an improvement but only just. True, it provides some protections, like allowing parents to keep children on their policies until they are 26-years-old. That's good.

But the truth is that Americans are now still stuck with an expensive and jittery health-care system that forces them to put off routine care because of outrageously high deductibles.

That in turn, creates the condition that major illnesses are not merely a physical catastrophe but a financial death-spiral.

And too, the ACA has not fixed many of the problems in the healthcare industry. It is a fact that despite ACA's built-in restrictions on insurance abuses, crafty insurers continue to find ways to discriminate

- in landmark environment tax violation suit against Guyana THE Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled in favour of Trinidad-based beverage company SM Jaleel and its subsidiary, ordering the Government of Guyana to repay millions of dollars to the companies for environmental taxes paid in violation of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

The ruling was handed down on Tuesday by CCJ President Sir Dennis Byron, via a video conference. At-

SM Jaleel and its locally based subsidiary. Guyana Beverages Inc.. in April last year moved to the court seeking redress. They had argued that Guyana had breached the principles of trade liberalisation and free movement of goods envisioned by the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas. the treaty which established the Caribbean Com-

munity (CARICOM) and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The applicants were claiming a refund of the environmental taxes imposed on the companies during the period January 1.2006. to the date of repeal of the Act in August. 2015.

However, when Sir Dennis handed down the judgement. Guyana was ordered to pay a collective sum of Environmental Tax for the period

March 7. 2011 to August 2015. together with a four per cent interest per annum.

The CCJ. in its ruling, instituted a five-year limitation period for the settlement of cases involving the unlawful collection of taxes which contradicts the Treaty of Chaguaramas. Additionally. Guyana has also been ordered to pay 70 per cent of the cost of the court proceedings, which are to be taxed if not agreed upon. This ruling comes on the heels of Rudisa Beverages's win against the Guyana Government.

Rudisa Beverages had taken Guyana to court over a "discriminatory" environmental tax a few years ago.

The company had argued that there was an imposition of $10 on every disposable container imported into Guyana. They eventually won tire case, by arguing that a similar tax was not imposed on local distributors, such as Banks DIH and Demerara Distillers limited.

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) subsequently granted the Government of Guyana time to repay

US$6M. which the tw o parties agreed to. by January 31.

2016. However. Williams had explained that what is noteworthy is the fact that in the case of RUDISA. the Government of Guyana did not lead evidence to show that the tax was transferred.

As such, he had noted that it was the Government's intention to lead such evidence in the SM Jaleel case.

She replaces Sita Ramlall who retired some months ago. Kyte was selected from a long list of applicants following intense interviews conducted by Justices Claudette Singh, James Patterson and Professor Harold Lutchman. The former Magistrate who had returned to private practice thanked God for granting her the opportunity.even as she said she was humbled to again serve Guyana.

She explained that she first served her country as state prosecutor many years ago. "My country has always been a priority for me." she said while noting that the concept of love for country was instilled in her as a student of President's College.

As such she emphasised the need to have a proper data entry system, so as to be able to track all activities of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the Attornev General's Chambers.

EGG PLANT LASAGNA Ingredients: 2 large eggplants, sliced lengthwise 3/4-inch thick (8 slices) 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided plus more for baking dish Coarse salt and ground black pepper 1 cup thinly sliced cremini mushrooms 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon freshly chopped thyme leaves 1 (15-ounce) container whole milk ricotta cheese 3 large eggs 1 cup grated Parmesan, divided 2 tablespoons freshly chopped oregano leaves Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Arrange sliced eggplant in a single layer on 2 sheet pans. Brush on both sides using 3 tablespoons of oil and season with salt and pepper.

3. Roast the eggplant until it is soft and golden. Turn slices halfway through, about 25 minutes.

4. In a medium skillet add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil and the sliced mushrooms. Saute until soft for about 7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and chopped thyme. Cook for another 2 minutes. Once the mushrooms are cooked remove and set aside to cool.

5. In a large bowl add the ricotta. eggs. 1/2 cup Parmesan, oregano, mushrooms, 2 teaspoons of salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Mix well. Brush an 8-inch baking dish with oil.

6. Spread half of the marinara sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Lay 4 slices on top followed by the ricotta mixture. Lay another 4 slices of eggplant and finish with marinara sauce. Top with the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan. Bake until golden brown, at 350 degrees, for 30 minutes.

The people who rang bells however were involved in a career that could easily turn deadly with the change of the weather, and many of them died horrible deaths while doing their duty. Men continued to do bell ringing because it was seen as a necessity â&#x20AC;&#x201D; not something that could be discontinued just because there were accidents on the job.

Church bells, sitting in their high towers, were once very important in the lives of most people and were rung for a variety of useful, even important, purposes.

At daybreak, they roused communities from their sleep and called them to morning prayers.

Throughout the day, the bell in the tower counted the hours, half-hours and quarter-hours. For instance, at one o'clock, the bell would strike once; and on the ten o'clock hour the bell would strike ten times. A powerful strike would produce blinding and deafening flashes of great intensity, as high charges of electricity tore their way down through conductive material in the building. Often, this included the wet ropes bell ringers were holding, thus summarily electrocuting the bell ringers.

With the invention and use of the lightning rod, bell ringers rarely die this way today. The metallic lightning rod is attached to the highest point of a building to provide protection by safely conducting the lightning to the ground.

Donations being sought for woman doused with acid While millions of women around the world came together on January 21 and marched in solidarity to protect their rights and to fight for equality, 26-year old Shondell Williamson of New Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice in Guyana was lying on a hospital bed with severe burns to her Her estranged husband had claimed her ownership and decided that if he couldn't have her then no one would; dousing the mother of his two young boys with a corrosive substance and completely disfiguring her face.

This is the grim reality that now has Williamson dependent on the kind donations of others to undergo what could possibly take several corrective surgeries in the United States.

Charitable Guyanese organization, Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) is once again coming to the rescue to offer another Guyanese in need of medical service, aid through donations.

Even as Williamson was still in hospital getting treatment for her severe burns, SHEA had already decided to respond to the woman's needs and commenced preparation for her case. Williamson's biggest challenge was to save her sight, since the corrosive substance had damaged her entire face.

"The extent of her injuries are so severe that she is not able to re-

face and upper body. ceive care in Guyana, therefore she must travel overseas for treatment," the humanitarian organization said.

"SHEA Charity has (nonetheless) accepted Shondell's case and is currently in the process of coordinating treatment services for her in the United States. However, due to

Fortunately however, the organization has secured treatment for Williamson, "at a top US hospital, where she will receive state-of-theart treatment, from some of the best doctors in the field."

Persaud was guided by PROPEL professionals and got started by clearing the plot of bushes and grass, before preparing the soil.

"Then you put down the alu (potato) inside and yuh cover down the alu about four inches in the earth." he said.

He maintained the product, watering it and cleaning the bed for 90 to 100 days, giving the plants water only thrice weekly while they were yet young. But as the time grew closer to harvesting more water was added.

It was easy and he got some help from several members of the PROPEL group in planting the potatoes, while he and his son maintained the crop throughout until harvesting. when additional hands were added.

A few mistakes were made or production would have been greater, but B hag wan Persaud said next time, there will be no making of mistakes as he was preparing to plant again on a larger scale, with PROPEL on his side to ensure the availability of adequate market.

"One of the major mistakes that I made here was that I plant it too close, so I didn't get the amount of earth to mold it up. More you mold it up the more bearing yuh going to get. When fuh give them the amount of water I didn't know the amount of water to give it. I get the experience from this here now fuh know about the amount of water required." he posited.

"It was a joy sowing and reaping 'Irish' potatoes he said. "I would advise farmers to grow it."

Weighing the potential the local market alone has. he is willing to go the extra mile and invest big. even as he continues producing his traditional farm produce of a variety of locally grown vegetables. He is also willing to try his hands at other non-traditional products.

"I travel around Guyana here... people eating potato plenty in Guyana here, so I think we have the market fuh when we produce it. and it's not expensive to grow. I will go more large this coming crop. I have some (seeds) for sale and some which I will reuse. I willing to try (other products). I was asking them to do garlic. Now you looking at the internet you see how garlic grows.

Putting it in the soil and maintaining it. I want that experience also." the farmer said.

Deputy Project Director of WUSC Caribbean Munish Persaud said conversahons on the harvesting of Irish potato and onions began four years ago. and the project has already achieved a few success stories.

With market analysis and a few other connections in place, accomplishments can become unlimited.

He recalled that during the 1970s Guyana's potential was already recognized and

Irish potatoes were successfully harvested in the Pakaraima mountain in Essequibo.

Transportation of the products from the mountains, however, was quite costly and so the project became too expensive to maintain.

Attempts were again made in recent years to grow potatoes on the coast but proved unsuccessful.

He said potatoes can contribute significantly to food security and on Guyana's coast a few farmers are hoping to up production.

A taste-testing event will be staged in two weeks at the Pegasus Hotel and Persaud said one can guarantee that the locally-grown potatoes will have a sweeter taste.

"It has now been proven that potatoes can be grown on the coast of Guyana and taste even better." he said during a simple ceremony on the farm.

Persaud said sometime back, the late Minister of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh aggressively campaigned for the growing of non-traditional crops and PROPEL in response did an analysis of non-traditional crops which they wanted to have farmers produce in Guyana.

nese import on a large scale and identified onions and potatoes.

"PROPEL is taking a market systems approach involving input suppliers and developing a nerivork of actors to make it possible." the Deputy Director said.

The organization is collaborating with several market actors including buyers, producers. input suppliers, research institutes, extension service providers and government to connect buyers from the Caribbean and beyond with local producers and ensuring products under their watch meet high value market standards as well as meet those markets.

Input Supplier of the project Beaufort Adams of BLT hailed the success of the project and is calling on more farmers to develop an interest in harvesting 'Irish' potatoes.

He said too that the potato being a non-traditional product and new to farms in Guyana, farmers needed to be educated on the products, its needs and the soil preparation and nutrients needed for its production.

"Now that we know that we could do it here right we need more farmers to be interested in planting the potatoes. Once we can have an organized setting, we could

do a lot more in making the production of potatoes in Guyana a real success." Adams told Sunday Chronicle in an interview.

He said the loam or loose soil is the best for such farming and such soil needs can be constructed with the right technology and soil nutrients.

"The best soil you have is the loam, the loose soil, potato needs loose soil. And apart from having the loose soil which you could make actually, you need to know the nutrients of the soil, you need to know what potato needs and then you need to know what nutrients exactly the soil has

that you're going to plant the potato on. and then you tailor the soil to suit the needs of the potato. That's basically how you become a successful farmer." Adams explained.

Meanwhile, Field Manager of the WUSC Farmer Field School, Jason Persaud, said although potato has been known to attract pests and diseases, it is remarkable that throughout the ten weeks of sowing, there has only been a minor presence of late blight but no major pests present in the field at Little Biaboo.

THE Aranaputa Processors Friendly Society Group is optimistic that recent commitments made by private and public officials will be beneficial to the peanut-butter factory's fortunes in the future.

At the same time, the Region Nine administration is expected to honour a debt in which it owes the factory approximately $1M through the national school feeding programme. The Guyana Chronicle reported last month that the agro-processing facility was in "survival mode" and that several factors including a reduction in demand from the group's main supporter, the Ministry of Education, has seen the agro-processing group grapple to remain afloat.

While officials at the Education Ministry could not be reached. Sonia Sears of the factory told the Guyana Chronicle this week that it is the Region Nine administration which is indebted to the factory and not the Education Ministry. Sears said that she received numerous calls following the publication of an article last month in the Guyana Chronicle on the state of the factory and according to her. a team of government officials subsequently visited the area this week.

dated back to September 2016 and was expected to increase at the end of the month of April. The factory supplies peanut butter as well as snacks in the form of cassava bread which is uniquely packaged and provided to schools in the area.

This publication understands that several private individuals whose businesses are related to agro-processing have also contacted the factory recently and they are expected to endorse the entity's products. "If that happens, it would be a surplus for us." Sears said, noting that a businessman was expected to test the factory's peanut butter on the local market as part of his plans to support locally produced goods.

The New Guyana Marketing Corporation (New CMC) has been a partner of the peanut butter factory as well as the Women Agro-Processors Development Network (WADN) .

The peanut butter is usually sold at the New CMC shop on Robb Street near the Bourda Market. The WADN provides network support as well as advocate products and services of its partners.

Last month, the group said it was seeking the intervention of the government or any organisation which can provide a grant in order for the agro-processing group to remain in business.

Residents of the village told the Guyana Chronicle that the factory was the main image of Aranaputa . They noted that most farmers in the area sold their peanuts to the factory and as such its closure would spell bad news for the farmers.

Government has been working to improve village economics through agro-processing ventures.

On the occasion of World Food Day in 2015. President David Granger reaffirmed his government's commitment to promoting value addition and agro-processing as part of enhancing the lives of Guyanese.

"Our Government will seek to move increasingly into value-added food production; we will seek greater investment in agro-processing and we will take steps to stimulate cottage industries; what we call bottom house industries, thereby creating jobs, providing reliable sources of income particularly for women and young people coming out of school," the President said at the time.

The Guyanese company which is owned by majority shareholder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Esmonde Klass. is also interested in building a factory to manufacture materials locally to ensure access by all levels of income-earners.

Klass told the Guyana Chronicle that his company is offering Guyanese green, fire-proof, easy-maintenance homes that are built to international standards.

The CEO said his company has taken an existing construction technique and perfected it. using certain technologies. Having gone through rigorous testing and procedures, the company is the proud, patented owners of MGO boards, which has quality approval from the European Union (EU).

NGO boards are green, so they are ideal for persons who suffer with allergies.

They are heat absorbers and therefore keep the home cool, and serves a worthy element in preventing house fires. Klass related.

Homes built with NGO boards are prefabs, which mean they are manufactured off-site and transported.

Jerry Dziedzic. the company's project coordinator explained.

He said the house could be assembled at the factory or on-site. and with the right equipment it could be completed in just tw o days.

"Fire is fire anywhere, it is destructive." Klass said, but acknowledged the greater chance that exists in saving lives.

While the end result is a green, beneficial construction material, the creation process is not that eco-friendly.

Klass said the process of making NGO boards is "messy." It involves the crashing of stone and burning it into a powder with the addition of other materials.

To protect the environment, care must be shown during the process.

The company is nonetheless hopeful of establishing an NGO board factory here.

"Our plan is to build a factory and manufacture the material." Klass said.

The only difference between his boards and local construction materials is the manufacturing content, but the material is just as reliable or even better.

The CEO is convinced that once manufacturing of this material starts in Guyana, it will be in high demand.

The factory will operate 24 hours with three shifts, employing as much as 100 persons for a start. Production of the material is not a difficult task and Klass believes Guyanese will catch on quickly.

He said that there is a Polish team currently working in Guyana and they are transferring their knowledge

to the Guyanese team employed with the company.

Outside of building construction. Green Heart Tree Energy Guyana Inc provides solar services. With every home they build in Guyana, there will be a built-in system that allows each household some five hours of free, independent electricity.

"From dusk to five hours afterwards, there will be complete electricity, independent of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL). Every home we build in Guyana will have that." Klass said.

The CEO said it took millions of dollars to complete engineers' tests, patent and other processes to make the material fit for the market. Klass is excited to see the response of Guyanese to the product, since he is also interested in targeting the Caribbean market for export.

So beyond the "win for Trump" and Ryan's last-minute bill sweetener to put up $8 billion towards the pre-existing condition problem, all of this is mere political magic and sleight of hand. The bill is so unpopular that even Republican political strategists and consultants took to social media to express concerns and opposition to it. You see, they know that killing the ACA's pre-existing condition prohibition is not just a political death wish, but amounts to automatic and immediate life-threatening changes for older Americans, if and when it become law. .. .slams GUYANA'S highest court, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Thursday dismissed the appeal of Vishnu Bridgelall and refused to overturn his convictions on two drug-trafficking charges.

The court, however, decided to alter his tw o consecutive five-year prison terms and instead ordered that they must run concurrently. Fines for the offences, totalling GY$ 254.4 million, remains in place. The CCJ also held that, given the unreasonable delay in the hearing of the appeal by the Court of Appeal, no order would be made for Mr. Bridgelall to be returned to prison.

The court stated that it was entirely unacceptable that a person who is convicted and sentenced, but later declared a free man by a higher court, should have dangling over his head, for over six years, the possibility that he may have to return to prison to serve out his sentence.

In May 2007. Mr. Vishnu Bridgelall was charged with tw o offences of being in possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

AMID criticisms about the move by the APNU+AFC coalition government to have this year's Independence Anniversary flag-raising activity held at Independence Park (Parade Ground), Minister of State Joseph Harmon made it clear that the country has several national venues that can be used at any time.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday during a post-cabinet press briefing, the minister made it clear that the D' Urban Park venue constructed by the government last year, just in time for the country's jubilee anniversary is not a 'White Elephant.' He took umbrage to the statement and made it clear that the facility is used daily by citizens.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Joly, who will be resident in neighbouring Suriname, in his remarks said that the Government of France wishes to deepen its relations with Guyana and to move forward together to implement measures in the areas of security, judicial cooperation and environmental protection. "France would also be happy to accompany in its efforts of building links with the European Union, particularly in the framework of the economic partnerships between the EU and CARICOM [Caribbean Community]... I am convinced that we can build more fruitful relations based on cooperation between our two countries," he said. Guyana and France established formal diplomatic relations on June 22,1967.

President David Granger will address and declare open the University of Guyana's first Diaspora Engagement Conference 2017 — "DEC 2017" — at the Ramada Georgetown Princess in Georgetown, Guyana on July 24,2017.

The events of the Diaspora Engagement Conference 2017 will be the harbinger in establishing one of the largest gatherings comprising individuals and companies within Guyana and the Diaspora.

Wide ranging topics which could have positive far reaching effects for Guyana, especially through the involvement of the Guyana Diaspora, along with presentations by several keynote speakers have been submitted to the University by the intended presenters.

The abstracts covering the range of Diaspora issues from "Diaspora Engagement Experience"; "Contemporary Issues/Challenges Facing the Caribbean Diaspora"; "The Rose of Hometown Associations"; "Researching the Diaspora"; "Diaspora Tourism"; "Imaging and Imagining the Diaspora"; "The Global Diasporic Community in the Twenty-First Century"; "Building Partners With and Within the Diaspora"; "Remittances and Beyond"; "Technology and Business/Entrepreneurial Opportunity Recognition within the Diaspora", are already submitted.

The intent of the Conference "DEC 2017" is to facilitate the presentation of materials in the expansive field of the Diaspora.

Indies then embarked on their first innings and Jeffrey Stollmeyer played not only one of the best innings of his entire career, but one of the best seen at Lord's in many a long day. Eleven years earlier, Jeffrey had made 117 against this team, and today he followed this up with 81 which saw his studied elegance in full flower. Thus in two straight innings against Middlesex, he achieved the proud average of 99 runs.

But the power and glory was to belong to our own Robert Christiani who then at Lord's became the third West Indian to tour England (the second in first-class cricket) and to score two separate centuries in a single match. If Christiani had previously lost some of his luster as a batsman, this game fully restored him a place of honor among the WI greats, as Guyanese and West Indian fans privileged to witness his display are fond of recalling. There is one such person who is alive and had witnessed that match.

ROBERT CHRISTIANI inter-colonial wicket-keeper and one who taught English at Hunter's College in the United States. 1 met Prof. Gibbons at the Press Association Awards ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel when I was back home in 1994. As one of the judges he congratulated me for winning the best sports feature on Robert Christiani. At the time I was writing for the Mirror under the editor Janet Jagan who was very supportive of my work.

When the PPP came into power in 1992,1 approached the then Minister of Information Moses Nagamootoo to have my articles published in the Guyana Chronicle because of the wider circulation the Chronicle enjoyed at the time, especially in the rural areas. Moses pleaded with me to join the Mirror instead because several of their writers had left to take up ministerial and other governmental posts. It's like coming back home to a paper which 1 was with initially when they first started in the early 1960s as the Berbice sports correspondent.

The ensuing years were exciting until the Kaieteur News came on the scene. Little do people know that I was one of the early contributors along with Fred Halley and Steve Narine among others who sustained

Prof. Gibbons said that; "he remembered distinctly how Christiani with the swiftness of a fawn and the grace of a swallow would float yards down the wicket to smother an off-break and send the ball hurtling through the covers. Then curling up in a way only he could he would hook another artistically to the square leg fence.

He batted well on that tour, for he was quick of eye and fleet of foot. He was the finest hooker of the short ball of any batsman I have seen who wore thick lenses spectacles."

In the first innings, Christiani running on the tsunami flood tide of his form scored 131 not out which included one six and twenty-one fours — five of them in one over from Sims. In the course of his ninthwicket partnership with Johnson, he dropped the 92-mn 22-year-old record set by his fellow Guyanese Maurice Femandes and Jim Neblette (1928), by putting 96 with Christiani's contribution as the trunk of the tree. With Jeffrey Stollmeyer's 81 and sparkling batting by Everton Weekes who made an equally attractive 58, West Indies compiled 343 to lead the County by 32 runs.

In their second knock Middlesex scored 209 for 4 declared of which J. G. Deves made 86. Weekes in a completely new role took two for 25. West Indies were left to get 178 in ninety-three minutes. The West Indies knocked up 148 for three and were within 29 runs of victory when time put a closure to the game. Opening the second innings, Christiani struck 14 fours to complete an even hundred, his second such of the match — to emulate the feats of the great and legendary George Headley 106 and 107 at the same ground in 1939), and Kenny Trestrail 105 and 100 not out at Sunderland in 1950. He scored 13 in the last over of the game, the last four runs coming off the foot of Dennis Compton — who also represented England at football as he allegedly sportingly kicked the ball over the boundary ropes. Christiani had thus achieved the unique feat of completing two centuries at Lord's on the same day, without being dismissed on either occasion.

Cricketers who saw the match, and that included Arnold Gibbons, still talk of that second 100 of Christiani's. They say the first was good. But it was this innings midway in which he became the sixth West Indian player on the tour to reach 1,000 runs that no less an authority than Frank Worrell himself said; "the best century 1 have ever seen." Here, again, was the batsman of grace and adventure of which cricket's international intelligentsia has sung the praises then and since. His wide range of strokes of the utmost attractiveness, his power and nimble fielding were all on display and for two innings he earned the approbation of the English in the way the pavilion at Lord's showed. The match was drawn, but the honors were with the tourists, and Christiani was a hero.

Phillips remains Guyana's brightest female sprint prospect, but despite all her accomplishments locally, the Buxtonian continues to struggle to find her footing regionally.

She believes nervousness has been her major issue, but as time progresses. Phillips says working on her confidence will be her top priority when she hits the track at the big meets.

Phillips recently was among the 12 athletes who represented Guyana at the CARIFTA Games last month in Curacao, where she took part in the Girls' youth 100m and 200m but returned medal-less.

"A lot of people - with this being my second year - expected me to perform better. but I was nervous." she declared.

It was another disappointment for the 16-year-old. who had only last November failed to medal at the South American Youth Championships, and also had a difficult time medalling at CARIFTA 2016.

WEST Indies safely negotiated an awkward last half hour to head to stumps without having lost a wicket in response to Pakistan's first innings total of 376. Kraigg Brathwaite and Keiron Powell were circumspect, eager to bat again today and technically adept enough to deserve it. That only 14 runs came off the 11 overs they faced will bother no one. considering Pakistan had tradged along in much the same way for almost tw o sessions.

On a day likely to be remembered for the pace, or the lack of it. Azhar Ali got his 14th Test hundred, and was supported by Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfraz Ahmed as Pakistan looked set to bat through the day. However. West Indies bowlers came back into it in the final session as the last five Pakistan wickets fell for only 65 rans.

All eyes were on Sarfraz after tea. with Pakistan looking to inject some sorely lacking momentum into their innings.

However, they were dealt a major setback early on in the session when Jason Holder took tw o wickets off two balls to send back Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah.

With the score on 322 for 8. West Indies would have hoped to ran through the last two batsmen and make Pakistan pay for their lack of intent earlier on. But Sarfraz maddened them by bringing his street-cricket skills to the fore. The wicketkeeper batsman basically took guard outside leg stump, forcing the bowlers off their lines, and collected 39 of the 45-ran partnership betw een himself and Mohammad Abbas.

In the morning, taking aim at all those criticising them for batting too slowly on the opening day. Pakistan had a simple response.

There were only nine rans in the first 10 overs - and among them were five successive maidens. The ran - if you can call not scoring a ran - made an early start by half an hour almost needless. Why bother when the game just straggled to move on?

West Indies formed their second guard of honour of the Test as they welcomed Misbah after dismissing Younis Khan Ibw for 18 off 75 balls.

Then they outdid their generosity by dropping the Pakistan captain, playing his last Test, on 0. Squared up by a ball that shaped

away. Misbah looked back to see his outside edge being dropped by Shane Dowrich. It was the wicketkeeper's second drop of the Test, and it left Holder, the bowler, buckling at the knees.

West Indies, for all their straggle to pick up wickets, did keep things quiet with the old ball. Eventually. Shannon Gabriel took the new one in the 89th over, which only provided a fresh signal for Pakistan to retreat further into their shell. Misbah had. at that point, uncoupled batting with scoring rans completely, at one stage having one ran off 52 balls.

Azhar at the other end finished the morning with 37 rans off 92 balls as Pakistan achieved their objective of not losing too many wickets.

After lunch, however. Azhar was undone

attempting a rare attacking stroke, a slog sweep over midwicket. He missed the ball by some distance it spun back into his stumps, bringing to an end a grinding hundred that had looked like hard work.

Flickering signs of aggression emerged from Asad Shafiq. as he looked to go over the top in a bid to improve his side's desperately poor ran rate. However, he picked out longon to give offspinner Roston Chase the third of his four wickets.

A better side than West Indies would probably have punished Pakistan for their approach on Thursday, and West Indies themselves may yet do so.
