The Ministry of Natural Resources recently announced the commencement of a major seminar to provide pertinent information on the upcoming oil and gas sector. The Ministry will collaborate with the New Petroleum Producers' Group in the facilitation of the "Governance of the Petroleum Sector", Preparing for First Oil." This group is organized by Chatham House — the Royal Institute of International Affairs, with the support of the Commonwealth

Secretariat and the Natural Resources Governance Institute (NRGI).

A statement by the ministry said that the training will last two days. Its purpose, "is to enhance the capacity of Guyana as an emerging oil and gas producer , to establish context-appropriate rules and institutions for good governance in its petroleum sector."

The sessions will be facilitated by a team of international experts, with local participants' knowledge to be enhanced by contributions from new and experienced petroleum producers and advisors from Ghana, Uganda, Suriname, Trinidad, Liberia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

US-owned ExxonMobil discovered oil last year in its off-shore concessions and is now preparing to drill a third well. It is estimated, based on current information that the area has up to 1.4M barrels of oil in the concession.

Guyanese have been advised to make themselves acquainted with the possibilities and opportunities of the new oil sector. While Exxon has announced that no new wave of employment will be available for the offshore operation, it has acknowledged the spin off services that would be necessary.

Great The entire world has its focus on the United States of America, and it is safe to say that most of it has fear in its eyes, given the belief that President-elect Donald Trump is going to steer that World Power in a direction that spell hard times, for both Third World and non-white countries. There is the concern that Trump's presidency will strengthen the system of racism and white supremacy, and that the dominating factors will include the total disregard of people's rights, opportunities and advancement.

Many undocumented immigrants, their families and friends are very concerned about plans to build a wall and deport or imprison persons who are in the country illegally.

President-elect Trump campaigned on the slogan of making America great again. There were so many things that he said that was wrong with the country, such as bad foreign policies, bad deals, the transfer of jobs to Third World countries, which created the loss of revenue to the country, the immigration problem, poor health service and education among several other issues.

One thing that stood out is that Trump ran an almost no holds barred campaign — saying how he felt and what his supporters wanted to hear.

Trump made it clear that Americans were tired of living in an "offensive state" as one CNN guest described it. It was after the second Presidential debate and she was explaining how offended

persons were referring to their "disgust" and Trump used the term "bad hombres" to describe Mexicans who were accused of crimes. She said that the country was in an offensive state and people could no longer speak freely.

Trump also campaigned on the notion of Americans being tired of their country policing the world. He had stated that the world can go on without American engagement, pointing to the results of American interference in the Middle East. Moreover, some people see Trump as the man to implement the changes America needs. They believe Trump will get rid of the illegal immigrants that are taking their jobs and "committing so much crime," that he would advance American interest ahead of other nationalities and groups in the country, they think he will advance American interest in the world by not getting involved in quarrels and other spats, and by regulating how aid is given, and that he will re-

turn the jobs that American companies take to Third World countries where workers are underpaid. America is a cosmopolitan state, but it would be too obvious to deny that the interest of some is put ahead of others. The President-elect has gotten the approval of the electorate and he is ready to serve.

This is not wrong, it is advancement for those whose interest are being met.

Like everyone else, Guyanese still head to the Land of Opportunity — America, "looking for a better life." They see that the society is organized, systems function.

The belief is that you work, you earn, and you live. Some have found it not to be so easy, but have chosen to manage as best as

For most of us Guyana is home, and if we should be worried about making anywhere great again, it should be the 'Land of many waters,' the one place where Guyanese know they cannot be kicked out. America is more than two centuries old, and to understand its present, one must be aufait with its past. It is a great nation and regardless of how it became the leading world power is irrelevant, this is how nations are built.

It is totally up to the citizens to create the change they are looking for by advancing the interest specific to them.

How they go about creating such change is a completely different ball game and oft times require more brain than physical power.

How then will illegal Guyanese in particular take the potential threat of being sent home? That totally depends on the individual, it is hoped that one is not fixated on the intoxication of "bright life, big city living," because Guyana is hoping to develop just as America has done. Guyanese should not be worried about coming home, whether as a victim of the potential deportation threat or by free will.

Guyana has its own issues that need fixing, much of it not too far from the American race-relation issues. Like the Americans, it will only be when the people, regardless of their cultures and backgrounds, embrace the common interest of developing the country, will there be advancement. If there is anything to be learnt from America, it is that despite its trials, it got the job done in becoming great.

Some might not agree that Guyana was ever at a stage to say it was great, but if that be the case, it's not too late to be a part of something new.

On April 6,1917 America, under President Woodrcm Wilson, entered the First World War on the side of the allies against Germany. The following day, George M. Cohen composed a song that became the darling of our fighting men and women and those on the home front. He is known for classics, such as "You're a Grand Old Flag," "Give My Regards to Broadway," and "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy." But when I hear, "Over there, over there, Send the word, send the word over there That the Yanks are coming, The Yanks are coming." I remember, not only the war to end all wars, but every war ever fought by America to preserve the principles of Democracy and Freedom.

VETERANS DAY On November 11, each year, we pause to honour our veterans. Formerly known as 'Armistice Day', US legislators created it as a public holiday to honour the end of World War 1 (November 11,1918).

CIVIL WAR On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Among its provisions, .it allowed Black men to fight in the Union army and Navy.

The 1st South Carolina Volunteers, composed of freed slaves from South Carolina and Florida, was the first Black Civil War regiment. Its Commander was Colonel T. W. Higginson and it was recruited in the South.

The most famous African American unit during the Civil War was the 54th Massachusetts regiment. It was led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and was recruited in the North. The regiment first saw combat in South Carolina, defending against an attack

These regiments were posted in the West and Southwest, where they were heavily engaged in the Indian Wars. During the SpanishAmerican War, all four regiments saw service.

BUFFALO SOLDIERS These were members of the US 10th Cavalry regiment formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They were given the nickname by the indigenous tribes they fought during the Indian Wars.

The "Buffalo Soldiers" were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-Black regiments in the regular U.S. Army.

UNITED Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Francois Hollande at the Climate Change Conference on Tuesday called on the United States (U.S.) to honour the 2015 Paris Agreement. This call was directed to the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as to the importance of the U.S. remaining as a partner in the agreement, given its economic power and being the world's second largest greenhouse gas emitter, which is a leading cause of climate change.

This advice is communicating to Tramp that while the U.S. is a superpower it is not the world; and whereas governments may come and go. the rest of the world will not countenance the behaviom of any country seeking to engage in international treaties and ending same based on internal politics.

The almost 200 governments, including the U.S.. that are attending the Conference in Morocco (7th-18th November) believe climate change poses a clear and present danger to the world and man's survival.

With Tramp having campaigned on the belief that climate change is a hoax, his incoming administration has already set about looking at ways how the U.S. can extricate itself from the 2015 Paris Agreement which came into force on November 4. This treaty was in the making for the last 20 years and involved significant diplomacy, presentations of hard-core scientific evidence, compromises by powerful nations and commitmentsby participating nations to work together.

According to a Reuters report (15th November) a source on Trump's transition team said he is seeking ways of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement within a year, by-passing a theoretical four-year wait. This is cause for concern in the face of scientific evidence of rising atmospheric temperatures and sea levels and dramatic melting of the Arctic seas. Any withdrawal would bring into question the credibility of the U.S. as a partner on the world stage

Climate change in Guyana has seen a record increase in temperature; storms are becoming more destructive; there are higher tides, resulting in water from the Atlantic Ocean coming over the seawalls and flooding the coastal roads, destroying livestock, vegetable gardens and farms. And while diplomacy necessitates careful use of words by Ban Ki-moon, Hollande and others, they are not without merit, for lying beneath them are deep, justifiable concerns.

Right now the party is hurting and in a state of shock, disorientation, and gloom like few times in its history. The party was so SURE that one of the worst Republican candidates in history would lose the election to an experienced political veteran.

WTF went wrong? How could almost ALL polling houses have missed this one and never saw it coming, even with the late-game crap that James Comey, the FBI Director pulled and the almost overnight change in the campaign narrative?

I'm sure that in the coming weeks, months and years, many will analyze the political intervention of the FBI director, that helped to swing the election to his Republican brother, in the most blatantly partisan of actions. That was truly the "October Surprise."

But I prefer to look at ways and means to rebuild the party in the interim and the period before 2020 and the next Presidential contest. In these series of articles I'll explore avenues and link them to historical data that show that Democrats have a great opportunity to rebuild and reorganize a party that has lost its way and rejected its historical mission to be the vanguard of the least and most vulnerable among us. The Democratic Party MUST return to the values of the New Deal (a retooled 21st century model) that it rejected in favor of a pompous and arrogant meritocracy that thumbed its nose at working class people, who bolted from the party into the arms of Donald Trump.

The Democrats have been here before. The party took a severe mauling when Ronald Reagan (1981 - 1989) won with two crushing landslides. It had to face the complete ideological goring of Michael Dukakis and the vexing loss of A1 Gore against George W. Bush (2000), a President whose IQ is above President-elect Donald Trump. And John Kerry's bumbling campaign (2004) and electoral loss only served to plunge Democrats into deeper and deeper despair. So when Barack Obama came around it looked as if the party had finally rebounded and a Hillary Clinton presidency would seal the deal and handle the unfinished business of the Obama Era. The Trump's minority electoral vote victory threatens to undo the progressive agenda set out by President Obama and usher in a period of pain and gut wrenching anguish as only a weak, powerless opposition party can experience. But that's a defeatist attitude and Democrats and Liberals must pick themselves up and regroup — for America's sake. Democrats must remain focused on DEFENDING the interests of working class America and PROMOTE an attractive, progressive alternative to the Republican Party that will have its fair share of internal civil war that a President Trump cannot quell. There is opportunity in chaos — if you are prepared.

Admittedly, the transformational path for Democrats will not be easy. For one thing there is the Bemie Sanders wing of the party that has not forgiven the DNC mainstream and the party's establishment for jipping their man in the primary. This wing is now emboldened by the fact that EVERY pre-November 8 poll showed Bemie resoundingly beating Trump. They believe that this was a missed opportunity. The Clinton Centrist wing is perhaps now very wounded and the mistakes that the party and her campaign made will not only be a long-festering sore, but a source of political distrust from rank and file Democrats AND Sanders's supporters. Already we're seeing the opening salvo for control of the DNC by former Virginia governor Howard Dean's stated intention to run for DNC chair.

He's "old school" and was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton, who was extremely disparaging in his attacks against Bemie Sanders. His candidacy may very well be a non-starter, given the anger that Sanders's supporters still have for him. I'm also not sure that Dean is the right person to lead, unite the party, and entertain open, frank discussions and criticisms. The Party MUST take a hard, cold and sober look at itself and decide how best to move forward based on this critical self-examination. It has to jettison the elitist, meritocratic approach that it embraced while nursing a barely concealed contempt for its blue-collar working-class base.

Curiously, BEING WHITE, trumped ALL of the odious and sexist statements

by Donald Trump, some bordering on sexual harassment. Those things appeared not to bother white women, and white men could care less what Trump stands for as long as he's white. In many ways white men and women were getting back at the Democratic Party for having the audacity to nominate a Black man who subsequently won the presidency. America is today Republican AND white.

But despite all of this Democrats should not be discouraged. Let's start with the fact that most Americans did not want Trump to become the next president of the United States. He lost the popular vote and exit polls found that 60 percent of (continued on page 19)

Food is one obvious sector which could be expanded and enterprise development another. Tourism is a major sector in the Caribbean - the tourists have to be fed, why not feed them on an "Eat Bajan" diet? The food import bill keeps growing and growing - why not replace these imports with locally produced food and save foreign exchange?

Recently I went to a new golf shop in the big city. 1 shopped and studied and finally selected the new clubs I wanted. As I was checking out and getting ready to pay, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."

Not sure what was going on and not being used to the big city ways, I did as she asked. When the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out she was referring to how I should place my credit card in the card reader.

He says, "Oh,no. Now my wife will kill me."

His friend says, "Don't worry. Just tuck a twenty dollar bill in your breast pocket and tell your wife that someone threw up on you and gave you twenty dollars for the dry cleaning bill."

So they stay for another couple of hours and get even drunker.

Eventually he reels home and his wife starts to give him a bad time, "You smell like alcohol and you've thrown up all over yourself, you're disgusting ..

Speaking very carefully, so as not to slur, he says, "Wait. It's not what you think. I only had one drink, but this man got sick on me. He'd obviously had one too many, or else he just couldn't hold his liquor. He was very sorry and he gave me twenty dollars for the cleaning bill. Look in my breast pocket."

It is generally regarded as an ugly, even loathsome bird at close quarters. The feathers of the Carrion Crow have a dull black color. Its head and neck are also black and have no feathers. Only its legs are different, being silver gray. The bird

On the other hand, it is an impressive artist in the air. The young carrion crown takes a long time before it could fly, but when it does master the art it is a beauty to behold. After rising from the ground in a single spring, it flaps its long and ample wings only a few times and sails away. High up against the blue sky, sometimes barely visible, it performs impressive aeronautic feats as

While up there, it is scanning the terrain for food. Soon, the Carrion Crow with its keen sight spots something of interest and drops to earth to investigate it. Another Carrion Crow may do likewise, and if

there is really something there, the birds remain. In a short time, a number of birds assemble, scrambling and quarreling over the feast.

Carrion Crows are gregarious, but are also often seen alone. On the ground, a lone Carrion Crow may be seen perched on a fence, post or (continued on page 25)

Leaders Initiative, to meet Obama When Abigale Loncke applied for the 2016 Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) in the United States, she never expected that she would be competing against 250 young entrepreneurs for the best business pitch in Washington, DC neither did she plan on travelling to Peru to meet US President Barack Obama

Lonckc is the founder of Community Health Care, an agency which offers home care service for elderly persons, the sick, disabled, and children. The agency also gives back to the society by providing training for women, who are in need of employment and a second chance at life. Locke's team would integrate these women into society, teach them life skills and offer them jobs within the company.

She was one of the four Guyanese selected to represent the nation at the YLAI. The initiative brought together 250 young leaders from Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States for an exchange programme that involves internship and skills-building workshops.

The YLAI is the brainchild of President Obama, who is committed to empowering young people around the world by ensuring that they have the network and skills to fight global challenges.

Over the six weeks, participants exchanged experiences in start-ups, small businesses, NonGovernmental Organisations, and similar entities in cities throughout the United States and in partnership with community groups and American universities.

The 250 participants further developed their business plans through an entrepreneurship curriculum and workshops. They were trained and mentored by the Chambers of Business Commerce in the US and by influential business persons.

After a successful business pitch in Alabama, Loncke was selected to attend the APEC Summit to meet the President, making her the first young entrepreneur to win the first half of the YLAI in the US. She stated that although, she did not win the best business pitch prize in Washington, DC, the experience was enough to last a lifetime.

By Navendra Seoraj THE installation of an overhead arch as part of the bauxite centenary observances has been completed and stands tall at Casaurina Drive, Mackenzie, Linden.

The arch was gifted to the residents of Linden by the bauxite company Bosai Minerals Group Guyana (BMGG) and was constracted at a cost of over $20M. A team of employees consisting of mechanics, masons. electricians and other tradesmen over the past few weeks worked assiduously to complete the installation of the steel structure that was constructed in Suriname.

As 2017 approaches rapidly, now that the Republican Leader will soon take residence in the White House, we are saddled with a new ideas, new concepts and a new regime. We must realize that changes will occur and we will be forced to make adjustments given the fact that both the 'House' and the 'Senate' would be under majority control. It was the Chinese immigrant who said in his own English parlance. "Cheap ting no good...and good ting no cheap." Therefore it is incumbent upon us to cut corners in order to make ends meet. At times we have bread on the table but we need to add some butter and cheese to go with it. In the process do we save or are we making some grave mistakes? Or as the British would say: "Penny wise but pound foolish."

EATING OUT Why do people eat out in order to have a meal? Is it to socialize?

When you go to a movie you are not socializing with your companion, except for a dinner afterwards and that can be very pricey compared to a cup of coffee and a cheese roll which you could very well have at home. The point is, compared to a home cooked meal; a dinner is much more expensive. However if you have a business meeting dinner, you can deduct that expense on your tax returns at the end of the year.

99 CENTS OR DOLLAR STORES Indeed they are popping up all over the place, some with a different nomenclature such as 'Family Dollar' and 'Dollar Deals' but are you saving to the detriment of your health? No offenses to the owners of these stores who are making an honest living, but the principles of Caveat Emptor have to be considered. Dollar Stores offer a lot of great deals, but not everything you find on dollar store shelves should end up on your need list and into your shopping cart.

There are dollar store deals such as cleaning products. Why spend $6 on name-brand carpet cleaner, up to $4 for disinfectants and even more for cleaning wipes? If you can avoid the lure of convenience shopping, heading to the dollar store for cleaning products could land a few steals from supermarket store prices.

Consumer Reports tested popular dollar store buys and came up with a list of do's and don'ts. The study found that electrical products such as extension cords aren't up to regulation at some dollar stores, and may pose a fire hazard. Whereas a standardized extension cord can be found at the nearby electrical store for just a couple more bucks. Paying for safety pays dividends. Most dollar stores

pass savings on to consumers by buying surplus items below market prices. But vitamin supplements are not regulated by the FDA. There is no way to confirm the ingredients or ratios listed on labels. Consumer Reports tested several vitamin bottles from dollar stores and discovered that these did not contain nutrients that were printed on labels. Democratic

ballyhooed immigration proposal to deport approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants is NOT POPULAR. Only 25 percent of Americans support his deportation plan and 70 percent are in favor of a path to legalization. Moreover, according to exit polling, only 41 percent of American voters support Trump's Mexican border wall with 54 percent opposing and rejecting it.

What Democrats have to do is pick their battles. They can take Trump's signature proposals, turn it on its head, and effectively turn them against him knowing that they have the support of a majority of the American people.

Democrats can also capitalize on the present divided state of America, a situation that Trump aggravated and helped create. Again, all they have to do is look at the exit polling (even though many people are now turned off of polls; but I'm still a fan of data and numbers). The data points to the fact that 26 percent of Americans say they are Liberal, 39 percent moderate (left-

leaning) and 35 percent conservative.

Democrats can use the data about the Affordable Care Act, so-called "Obamacare," to their advantage. 48 percent of people think that the healthcare law was "about right" or "did not go far enough" while 47 percent, stated, "it went too far." Forty-five (45) percent want the next president to "continue Obama's policies" while 48 percent want the president to be more conservative. These policy concerns and how Americans view their next president opens the gates for serious ideological battles that Democrats can wage with great effect. There is also the minimum wage fight that's popular with Americans of all hues and stripes, and issues of climate change that's very popular with the American right AND left that Democrats can take the lead on and win - with the people behind them.

Finally, some words of caution.

Whatever the Democratic Party decides as the way forward it has to be very careful a precise. If the party veers too sharp leftwards, in the Bernie Sanders way, it runs the risk of alienating the

upper tier of the party and its more conservative elements that could bolt to the Republicans, so deep is the disconnect, anger, and distrust between the mainstream, working class Democrats and the meritocracy. That could split the party asunder and render it useless in the coming battles.

Or the party could break with its neoliberal centrism in economics and identity politics that have become foundational principles of the party for two decades now. That would usher in a policy of class-based economic populism.

There is also another way. Democrats could wait and see what President Trump does and rely on his potential and proclivity to just wreck everything by sheer incompetence and his dictatorial leadership style that he's honed in his business dealings. The United States government is not a business - there are checks and balances and an opposition party. Maybe "wait and see" is the best strategy because nobody quite knows what President Trump will do.

to support strong encryption and ease immigration policies CALIFORNIA, U.S. - As America's president-elect, Donald Trump is set to assume office on January 20, 2017 - the Internet Association is said to have sent a detailed list of their policy priorities that include promoting strong encryption, immigration reform and maintaining liability protection from content that users share on their platforms.

The Internet Association, a trade group with 40 members including some big names such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, Alphabet, Uber, Twitter and AirBnB amongst others made an early effort to repair the relation between the tech giants and Trump.

Earlier this year, 145 tech leaders warned that Trump would be a 'disaster for innovation' as he called the net neutrality a "top-down power grab." Trump was also against the federal government's decision to give the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to an international nonprofit organisation, claim-

ing that the internet should remain under U.S. control, "end of story."

But after Trump's win, the IA remained optimistic about its damage control methods and urged for easing regulation on the sharing economy, lowering taxes on profits made from intellectual property, and applying pressure on Europe to not implement barriers that restrict U.S. internet companies from growing in that market.

The IA also congratulated Tmmp and listed stronger encryption and overhauling government surveillance among its top concerns. lA's President and CEO Michael Beckerman in a statement said, "We look forward to working closely with the Trump administration, along with Republicans and Democrats in Congress, to implement policies that promote innovation and cement the internet's role as a driver of economic and social progress for future generations." lA's proposed goals include upholding Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act so internet companies can't get sued easily for things their users say or do online, upholding Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act so internet companies can't get easily sued if they quickly remove copyrighted content that users upload,

and reforming the 30-year-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act - Supporting strong encryption, reforming Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which lets the NSA collect online communications without a warrant. It also urged Trump to provide similar copyright protections to companies that operate outside the United States.

However, lA's proposal to ease immigration policies is likely to clash with Trump's provisional plans as he has pledged to deport over three million immigrants and his views on strict immigration laws also prohibit easy access to high-skilled immigrants.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has earlier publicly urged a broader deal on immigration policy supporting another group Fwd.us, which was highly critical of Tmmp's immigration proposals and called for a path to citizenship for undocumented workers.

Another area of clash between Trump and tech giants would be strong encryption in products against efforts by law enforcement agencies.

Verway said that during the discussions, most of the questions asked were about how to acquire lands; the amount of lands available; the types and suitability of

land; the process to establish a business in Guyana; the process by which lands can be repossessed, and the security of lands for investors in Guyana.

The team was also apprised of incentives for investors. among other things.

With them appearing largely enthusiastic about what had come out of the discussions, the CEO said it does seem very likely that the mission would be here again in the

near future, and that there would be more negotiations in looking at the opportunities here.

"This is just an advance or pre-feasibility measure.

They are also looking to talk to existing players in the agricultural industry to determine what partnership opportunities are available.

But it does seem as though they are interested in Government of Guyana opening up new lands in the various

locations." Verway said.

During those discussions with the CEO of Go-Invest, an energy-related subject was broached, with the Brazilians wanting to know of the potential for alternative energy mainly. While being primarily focused on solar, with limited interest in the area of wind and hydro-power, they seemed keen on knowing the potential for a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Guyana.

On an optimistic note, the CEO responded: "A framework is in development, and should be available very soon, so that there is potential. Definitely, there is potential for players to come and operate within that industry."

A power purchase agreement (PPA), or electricity power agreement, is a contract between two parties ~ one which generates electricity (the seller) and one which is looking to purchase electricity (buyer).

- Prince Harry's visit could boost tourism in Guyana â&#x2013; BS

By Ravin Singh IMAGINE the impact of an iconic photograph of Prince Harry standing on the ledge at one of the viewpoints at Kaieteur Falls.

Certainly, this is likely to boost tourism in Guyana by appealing to an international audience which longs for that eco-tourism experience.

And indeed, this will be one of the many impacts of the Prince's visit to Guyana between December 2 and 4.

"I think so. I think the picture of the prince standing at Kaieteur. that iconic picture is something which cannot do any harm to tourism here. I think that is something which he is very happy to promote in any way that he can" said British High Commissioner to Guyana.

On Saturday December 3. Saturday. Prince Harry will be taken to Surama - an Amerindian village in the North Rupununi and Fairview (another village), after which he will make his way to Iwokrama. Iwokrama Rain Forest is one of South America's bird watching hotspots

with many of Guyana's 800+ species on display.

Following the visit to Iwokrama. the Prince will then make his way to the famous Kaieteur Falls.

According to Quinn. the visit to Iwokrama was always something the commission wanted to happen, and it is very fitting for the prince, since his father. Prince Charles, is directly connected to it.

First becoming the Iwokrama International Centre's patron in 2000 and renewing his commitment in 2005. Prince Charles of Wales had been a strong supporter of Iwokrama's work to develop modem rainforest conservation practices and new approaches to valuing the ecosystem services which tropical forests generate for the benefit of mankind. As such, the British High Commission underscored the significance of a visit by one of Prince Charles' son.

"And you can't go into the hinterland and not go to Kaieteur. so it would be crazy to take him [the Prince] to Iwokrama and not take him to Kaieteur" the High Commissioner said. He noted too. that the commission want-

So he would want to use the opportunity to flag up support for these organisations and remind us that we have a social duty to help those who are not as well off as we are."

Quinn said.

Later that evening. Prince Harry will depart Guyana for Barbados where his trip ends.

In relation to logistics.

Quinn said that the commission has not been faced with any difficulties, and is having a smooth planning process for the Prince's visit in early December.

"We've had no problems so far. We've had support from the government, both for the official activities and help with going into the interior. As far as we are concerned. it's been relatively easy."

Prince Harry's tour of the Caribbean commences on November 20.

According to a report published Thursday night

by Upstreamonline.a global oil and gas source, the drill ship left for the Payara wildcat (area where there was no previous or historic finds), on Thursday, where the United States oil giant will test the third prospect on the same block as its massive Liza oil discovery.

Hess Corporation, chief executive. John Hess said on a third-quarter conference call that Payara was a "very similar stratigraphic trap and same kind of reservoir sequence as the other Liza wells".

The Stena Carron drilled Liza 3 . where discoveries were announced last month . to a total depth of 18.100 feet in 6000 feet of water on a location about 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometres) from the Liza 1 discovery.

The Liza 3 well hit around 200 feet (61 metres) of net pay "in the same high-quality reservoirs" as the first two Liza wells, according to block partner Hess.

"Based on the Liza-3 results. we now expect the estimated recoverable resources to be at the upper end of the previously announced range of 800 million to 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent."

Hess said when announcing its third-quarter results.

All the wells are located on the giant 6.6 million-acre Stabroek block, which rans almost the entire length of Guyana's offshore zone.

The Liza 1 was the first well drilled last year followed by Liza 2 where a significant discovery was announced this year. Shortly after, the Skipjack, a well located in a different field was drilled and that came up dry.

Late last month. Hess

Corporation, during its third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, revealed that the Liza-3 well located in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana has a world-class oil discovery. According to the company's website, there are estimated recoverable resources for Liza now expected to be at the upper end of the previously announced range of 800M to L4B barrels of oil equivalent.

Esso Exploration and Production Guyana is operator and holds 45 percent interest in the Stabroek block. Hess Guyana Exploration holds 30 percent interest and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana holds 25 percent interest.

RESIDENTS of Guyhoc Square now have a recreational ground,thanks to the intervention of the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Ministry of Education (MoE), which financed the project to the tune of $1.5M and executed same under its Ground Enhancement Programme.

She explained that close to 50 grounds countrywide are being rehabilitated so they can be made available for community recreational purposes.

Ivor was appointed Director of Sports in the Ministry of Sports, under Minister Shirley Field-Ridley, and if there was one major mistake made in Guyana's sports development, it was his replacement in that position in the early 1990's.

Ivor moved to the private sector, he continued his service to Guyana as a member of Rotary International. He is a Past President of Rotary Georgetown Central and three times Assistant District Governor.

It might be justifiably to ask how 'OB' managed to complete all those assignments and still perform with similar efficiency in his fraternal organization, again carrying the heaviest of workloads, but the most blatant point of wonder is that Ivor

Debutants HARARE, Zimbabwe, (CMC) - West Indies recovered from a batting collapse to mount a clinical bowling effort, and beat Sri Lanka by 62 runs in their opening game of the Tri-Nations Series here yesterday.

Sent in at the Harare Sports Club. West Indies were well poised at 172 for four in the 42nd over before losing their last six wickets for 55 runs, to be all out for a disappointing 227 off 49.2 overs.

Left-hander Jonathan Carter top-scored with 54 on his 29lh birthday while wicketkeeper Shai Hope stroked 47 and fellow debutant Rovman Powell, a typically enterprising 44 off just 29 balls.

In reply. Sri Lanka slumped to 16 for three in the sixth over, recovered to reach 139 for six in the 26thbefore crumbling to 165 all out off 43.1 overs - losing their last four wickets for 26 runs.

fast bowler Shannon Gabriel (3 -31) and off-spinner Ashley Nurse (3-46) who picked up three wickets apiece, while captain and seamer Jason Holder claimed two for 16 from eight superb overs.

Sachith Pathirana. batting at number eight, top-scored with 45 from 40 balls while Shehan Jayasuriya made 31 andNiroshanDickwella, 28.

With the victory. West Indies moved to the top of the table on five points, ahead on net run rate of Sri Lanka also on five points, with Zimbabwe yet to register a point.

The Caribbean side's start was less than impressive, however, as they lost both openers Johnson Charles (2) and Kraigg Brathwaite (14) cheaply to stumble to 27 for two in the tenth over.

Charles was taken at third man off seamer Suranga Lakmal essaying a big hit in the fourth over and Brathwaite was unfortunately run out by NuwanKulasekara's direct hit at the non-striker's

Hope and Carter then featured in key partnerships which put the West Indies innings back on track. The right-handed Hope first added 49 for the third wicket with the left-handed Evin Lewis, whose 27 came from 50 balls and included a single four.

When Lewis was caught at the wicket off leftarm spinner Sachith Pathirana in the 24th over.

Hope put on a further 5 3 or the fourth wicket with Carter, to take West Indies past triple figures.

Hope faced 81 deliveries and struck four fours and a six while the left-handed Carter's second ODI half-centmy came from 62 balls and included two fours and two sixes.

Hope had just cleared the ropes at long on with slow medium Asela Gunaratne and was eyeing a half-century when he was deceived and bowled four deliveries later by the same bowler, at 129 for four in the 35th over.

Carter and Powell kept the momentum going in abusy 43-run, fifth wicket stand off 41 dehveries. with Carter reaching his landmark in the 41 st over with a couple to fine leg.

He perished in the next over when he flicked seamer Kulasekara into the lap of deep square leg and it was left to Powell to blast two fours and three sixes, to get West Indies up to a com-

petitive total.

Man-of-the-Match Holder then struck early for West Indies, having Dhananjaya de Silva caught behind off an inside edge for three at seven for one in the fourth over.

Kusal Perera fell in the next over for four via the run out route with one run added, failing to beat Charles's throw to the non-striker's end from square leg. as he advanced down for a single.

When Holder induced a drive from Kusal Mendis and had the right-hander caught high at second slip by Nurse for four. Sri Lanka were declining quickly.

Dickwella revived the innings briefly in a 35-mn, fourth wicket stand with Upul Tharanga (12) before guiding a short ball from Gabriel to Sulieman Benn at third man, and his dismissal triggered another slide which saw three wickets tumble for 28 runs.

Tottering on 79 for six in the 26th over. Sri Lanka regained their balance thanks to Pathirana and Jayasuriya who posted 60 for the seventh wicket.

Pathirana was the aggressor, hammering five fours and two sixes and once he holed out to Lewis at long-off off Nurse in the 38th over, the innings collapsed.
