Bauxite investor to create over 150 jobs MINISTER of State, Joseph Harmon, on Thursday received a courtesy call from Executive members of the First Bauxite Corporation (FBX) at the Ministry of the Presidency, where he was updated on their project at Bonasika in Cuyuni-

Mazaruni (Region Seven), which is due to begin next year with an investment of approximately US$50M. During the meeting, Alan Roughead, President and Chief Executive Officer of FBX, told Minister Harmon that the company was

looking forward to starting construction of the project next year and production 12 months thereafter. The Project is expected to provide employment for over 150 Guyanese.

According to a Ministry of the Presidency release, Minister of State, Mr. Joseph Harmon, peruses the Project document as Mr. Roughead explains what the project would entail

FBX commenced feasibility work on the Bonasika Project in 2008. Since then the company has expended US$20M on developing the bauxite resource located in this area and has completed three feasibility studies. The company has also conducted two major production trials in Guyana over the past two years.

Minister Harmon said that the Government welcome the investors and looked forward to the employment opportunities, which will be created for Guyanese, once the project is up and running. He noted that Guyana was always open for investment and to create a more conducive environment for business, He said that the administration was currently working to put systems in

place, which can ensure that the bureaucracy associated with investments were reduced.

“We are committed to investment in Guyana. We are on a path of fresh approaches as the Minister of Finance loves to say and we want to expedite the systems so that it does not hinder investments.

The quality of services must be improved,” he said.

Toshaos call for heightened EPA presence in hinterland INDIGENOUS leaders on Wednesday called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase its presence in hinterland communities.

The call came during deliberations on the third day of the week-long National Toshaos Council (NTC) conference, now on at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) at Turkeyen, where leaders spoke of the many issues affecting them in Marudi, Upper Mazaruni and Baramita.

In fact, the Toshaos and village leaders identified mining and the negative impact it has on the livelihood of the residents of those communities, as one of the major challenges with which they have to grapple.

Due to this, they have asked that the EPA have a heightened presence in their respective communities, and that they visit more often.

The NTC has also called for the EPA to establish offices at strategic points in all ten of the country’s administrative regions. Clyde Henry, Toshao of Waramadong, said villagers in the Upper Mazaruni are more concerned about the

level of pollution in their waterways, as they heavily depend on them for their very survival.

“The Mazaruni River is fully contaminated… fishes refuse to live in the water, and your skin will break out when you use it,” Henry said.

“For years, we were very protective of our river, and we now realise the seriousness of this issue, especially the impact of mercury,” he added.

That said, he pleaded with the EPA to treat the Upper Mazaruni area with urgency.

In response, EPA’s Executive Director (ag.), Khemraj Parsram said that historically, the EPA, through an MoU, has delegated such responsibilities to the Environmental Management Unit of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC); that over the past year, the EPA has made efforts to improve its capacities.

He, however, assured Toshao Henry that the EPA will be establishing offices before the year is over at Lethem, in Region Nine, and in Region Six.

‘Pope London’ in a fix! Again!

– this time for owing the Bank

By Ariana Gordon SELF-proclaimed Pope, Philbert London has found himself yet again in hot water, but this time, not for widely publicised sex videos.

He and his wife, jointly and or severally, failed to pay two mortgages taken from the Bank of Nova Scotia, commonly called Scotia Bank, collectively valuing over $100M. On December 15, 2016, Justice Diana Insanally ordered Scotia Bank to recover the sum of $63, 876, 347 owed to it by London under a residential mortgage loan.

The Judge also ordered that the Bank recover, from both London and his wife, interest on the principal

sums of $32, 053, 598 at a rate of 10.5 per cent from May 14, 2016 until completely paid.

Additionally, it was ordered that the Bank recover the sum of $4, 526, 046 owed by London under a Scotia Plan Loan, coupled with interest on the Principal sum of $3, 100,000, at a rate of 15 per cent, from May 14, 2016 until fully paid.

London also had an outstanding payment for his MasterCard, and as such, the court has ordered that the property be held as security, under Deed of the First Mortgage and dated November 2008 and located at Diamond, East Bank Demerara be “brought on and sold at a sale at execution and the Plaintiff (Scotia

Bank) recover the proceeds of such sale, the sum of $63, 876, 347 with interest on the Principal sum of $32, 053, 598 at the rate of 13 per cent per annum from the 14th Day of May, 2016 until payment.” Cost was also awarded in the sum of $2,357.

A NO-SHOW London failed to appear before the court despite being served a specially indorsed Writ of Summons filed on August 15, 2016.

$95.8M. The two properties at reference are the Pope’s Diamond, East Bank Demerara home and another on D’Urban Street, Lodge, where his church is housed.

Scotia Bank, through its attorneys, made a request for a Writ of Execution, which was directed to a Court Marshal, to levy on London’s property for the sum of $18, 987, 537 together with interest on the principal sum of $14, 292, 728 at a rate of 11 per cent per annum from April 22, 2016 until fully paid, together with costs fixed at $55, 354.

As such, Justice Rishi Persaud commanded the Marshal to seize and sell “so much of the immovable property” in reference to the

D’Urban Street property.

If, however, the immovable property proved insufficient to satisfy the judgment, together with interest and cost, “this is to command you to seize and sell so much of the movable property of the said defendant as shall be sufficient to fully satisfy the said judgment and the amount of the said interest and cost.”

SCANDAL! Last November, social media was abuzz with leaked photographs depicting “Pope Emmanuel” Philbert London, of Beacon Ministries, in pornographic mode with several females.

One week after a sex tape involving the self-proclaimed ‘Pope’ was widely

circulated on social media, a contrite London emerged before his elated Beacon Ministries congregation and apologised.

“I am sorry if I ever communicated to you, by word or action, that I could not fail in morality or social ethics or standing. If I did that, I am so sorry I made you feel that way,” he told about 50 members of his church, comprising young children and adults.

The ‘Pope’, lovingly called “Father” and “Papa” by his followers, said: “I am here to tell you from the depths of my heart that I am sorry for any pain, sorrow, embarrassment or shame that many would have experienced, and in many cases are still experiencing, as a result of what has happened.”

As the ‘Pope’ apologised, members of his congregation shouted: “We love you, Papa!” even as he sat on his gold-painted wooden ‘throne’ and looked at them as if in remorse.

“I want to say how sorry I am for this disappointment, hurt and anguish you felt, and I hope that you will find it within your heart to forgive me, and allow me to be your Father,” London said to shouts of: “We forgive you!”

“We love you!” and “You taught us well!”, mostly from the female members of his congregation.

Thieves strip dead man of fake ‘bling’

By Vanessa Braithwaite THE tomb of 26-year-old Winston Hinds, the prisoner who was shot dead at the Timehri prison on August 4, was on Tuesday night vandalised and Hinds stripped of the fake jewellery he was buried with.

The discovery was made on Wednesday by family members, who were informed of what happened.

When they turned up at the Christianburg Cemetery, the newly constructed tomb was broken open, while Hind’s body remained in the casket. The fake gold chain and ring that he was buried in were gone.

Chronicle that her son was buried with the jewellery but it was not real. The family just wanted to send him off the way he used to dress. The thieves, however, forgot the proverb, “All the glitters is not gold” and will soon find that out upon trying to sell the jewellery.

Bess said what is more heart-breaking is the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LMTC) requested $40, 000 from her to have the tomb redone.

“Sweet heart, I don’t have a cent, I don’t know where I will get $40, 000 from. I am a poor woman, I just bury my son,” the frustrated Bess explained.

Fortunately, however, upon visiting the LMTC after

such a request was made, to make her plight known, a decision was made by the Council to drop the monetary request.

In addition, Bess is refuting claims made in some sections of the media that she received compensation from the Guyana Prison Authority after the death of her son.

She said that no compensation was given to her but she did receive assistance with the burial of her son.

Bess is also calling for a thorough investigation to be done into the death of her son, claiming that the post-mortem findings contradict the explanation given by the prison authorities.

The grieving mother said she witnessed the post-mor-

tem of her son and the findings show that he was shot to the abdomen, while the prison authorities are saying that he was shot while trying to escape.

Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels had noted that the murder accused had repeatedly ignored all warnings issued by prison officers.

Samuels said several prisoners, who were armed with improvised weapons, were involved in ‘a serious physical altercation.

Hinds was remanded to prison on January 2016, for the February 2015 killing of Richard Remington at Cholmondeley Hill, Wismar.

Relief pours in to storm-hit Jawalla …rebuilding efforts to commence soon RESIDENTS of Jawalla Village, Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni) are now regrouping following a freak storm last Friday which killed a woman and destroyed several houses.

The storm occurred around 15:30hrs and destroyed 34 buildings in the area. Roofs were damaged while other buildings collapsed. One of the collapsed buildings resulted in the death of 27-year-old Marsha Jordan, who was seven months pregnant at the time.

The death of Jordan and her unborn baby has sent the entire community into a state of shock and mourning.

At the time of the incident, Jordan and her two children were sheltering under the house from the heavy rains, when a strong wind caused the support of the building to weaken and the building came crashing down. Jordan sustained severe head and neck injuries and died instantly, while her two children managed to escape death with minor injuries. According to residents, freak storms such as these occur often, but have never resulted in the death of

Meanwhile, a new home is to be constructed for Jordan’s husband, Gilbert Jordan and the two children, Carmeline and Zalepha Jordan. “It would be a good thing if the men of the community come together, saw boards and let us build a new house for Mr. Gilbert Jordan and his daughters.” one of the ministers added. The Civil Defence Commission will be supplying the villagers with relief supplies including food, cleaning agents and other items needed for basic living. (DPI)

Sweet Sweet Calypso Music

Part One of Two

T

he African slaves, who brought calypso to the Caribbean, should be remembered, more as benefactors than as enslaved persons. They gave us the finest form of Caribbean classics, Calypso. Trinidad was the starting point for kaiso; but it spread throughout the Caribbean.

ORIGINS

There is much debate about the derivation of the word Calypso (Kaiso). Some argue that it came from “kaiso” a Hausa word for “bravo”; others say it came from the French “carrousseaux” a drinking party; or the Spanish “ calliso” a tropical song.

CALYPSO TENTS In the early days, Calypsonians performed at various locations throughout Trinidad in the months leading up to Carnival. These locations were called “tents’ and ceased to exist after Carnival. It was an appropriate term, because calypsonians sang on stages covered like a tent. Later, buildings and other empty spaces that were properly arranged were also used, but the name stuck.

The first “tent” in Trinidad was the Railway Douglas Tent which opened in Portof-Spain in 1921.

Others followed. The Redhead Sailor Tent opened in Port-of-Spain in the midtwenties.

In the 1940s, many tents opened. One of the largest of these was the Victory calypso tent on 95 Edward Street, Port-ofSpain.

The Original Old brigade Tent also operated on Edward Street.

EARLY RECORDED CALYPSO MUSIC

In 1912, while visiting New York, Lovey’s String Band is credited with recording the first calypso song. In 1914, the second recorded calypso song was done in Trinidad by Julian Whiterose, (Iron Duke), leader of the Whiterose Masquerade band.

The song was “Iron Duke in The Land” and was recorded and released by the Victor Recording Company of New York. Some have erroneously argued that it was written

by Duke of Iron. This not likely, because he was eight years old when the song was recorded.

OLD BRIGADE The first calypsonians who performed in tents were known as the Old Brigade and performed at the Old Brigade Tent. They included Raymond Quevedo —Attila the Hun

LORD KITCHINER The Maginot Line Calypso Tent operated at 47 Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain.

Some Calypsonians did not join tents; but performed in cinemas around the country. The Roving Brigade was one such group.

Carnival was suspended during 19421946 due to the war. However, tents were operative.

In 1947, Kitchener opened a tent, which he called the Young Brigade. He later changed the name to Original Young

ATILLA THE HUN

1947, he won the Calypso Crown. One of his popular songs was “FDR in Trinidad.”, written by Fitz McLean and sang by Attila. The song was a commemoration of President Roosesvelt’s visit to T&T in 1936.

He was the first calypsonian to hold elected public office in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). He was elected to the Port-of-Spain City Council in 1946 and to the Legislative Council of T&T in 1950, representing St. George County East. He also wrote “Kaiso” (A history of calypso) with John La Rose, published posthumously in 1983.

Pradoville land in dispute …Plaisance resident says land was bought by slaves ...SOCU points to massive discrepancies in transfer

PRESIDENT David Granger in an outreach to the Upper Takutu- Upper Essequibo Region Nine last week charged residents to take responsibility for the prosperity and development of their villages, communities and region, and ultimately the country.

This undoubtedly was a clarion call to the people, signalling a time for action, which should not be ignored.

It is a charge likely to resonate with those who feel the regional government is being under-served, hamstrung or held hostage to political machinations.

The 1980 Guyana Constitution which established a regional system to be managed by Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) empowers Parliament to make laws for these local democratic organs to be autonomous and raise their own revenues, which are being channelled in the President’s view. Thirty-seven years after, unlike the towns and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils which are allowed the autonomy to make their own (by) laws, establish their own police/constabulary systems and raise revenues for their daily operation, the RDCs are not so empowered.

Management of the regions is in large part subject the national Government’s decisions, programmes, allocation of revenues, and the agenda of the political directorate. Woe onto the people of the region if that government considers them not one of theirs as has happened in the not-too-distant-past.

Deprivation of involvement and equitable treatment have proven to be polarising, hindering the regions from forging harmonious relations among its peoples and the benefits, intrinsic and extrinsic, that can be derived from ownership and wanting the best for the community. Given these limitations and discriminatory practices, it would not be unfair to say that the regional system has been stymied and was never given the opportunity to properly utilise its human and physical resources, consistent with its objective.

Regional Government is the second tier of government, formed with the intent of devolving power to the people in their quest for self-determination. An advantage of regionalism is that the regional leadership has the opportunity to interact more frequently with the citizenry and obviously will get better understanding of the desires of the people, the problems that exist, and the people working together in resolving them. This level of interaction also brings with it a greater sense of accountability and improvement to local democracy, which are elements of good governance.

THE Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has found a number of discrepancies in the transfer of lands by an order signed by Former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, for the Pradoville Two Housing Scheme at Sparendaam on the East Coast of Demerara. And, a resident of Plaisance has come forward with claims that the land was bought by slaves in the early 1800s.

Head of SOCU, Assistant Commissioner, Sydney James told the Land Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday that a vesting order, #6/2004, was made

by Jagdeo on February 5, 2004, dissolving the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation and Guyana Television (GTV).

The assets of the two entities were then transferred to the National Communications Network (NCN) and the National Industrial, Commercial and Investments Holdings (NICIL). Among the assets transferred to NCN was the area of land at North Sparendaam, ECD, comprising 649,663 square feet of land.

James in his testimony said that SOCU received an audit report into the Pradoville project; the audit was done by Chartered Accountant, Christopher Ram

in December 2015. James said SOCU’s investigations have been completed into the findings of the audit and the file is with the police legal advisor.

James submitted a statement to the CoI which he noted points to the discrepancies related to the transfer, vesting and transfer of those lands under the Public Corporations Act. “It suggests that the order vesting the area of Sparendaam and Goedverwagting known as Pradoville 2 into a government company--National Communications Network Inc--that land was never sold or legally exchanged by the National Communications Network as preorder, vesting order or other instruments effective to remove the ownership of the land from the National Communications Network, ”James said.

James said that an investigation done by SOCU found that for the Goedverwagting/Sparendaam lands, there was a transport , #381 and dated November 4th, 1920 which indicated that the land consisting of 15.25 acres was transported to the then British Guiana Broadcasting company. He said during the investigations, SOCU spoke to one Fitzroy McKenzie, a resident of Plaisance who produced documents purporting to show that the area encompassing

The initiative by President Granger for flags depicting each of the 10 administrative regions, while it may appear symbolic, signals an intent to make the system work. The demarcation and unique identity that the flags represent for each region should now see collaborative efforts in using their resources for development of the people. Making ownership possible will require instituting legislative structures that allow for economic, political, security and other autonomous measures. Such could include granting each region the opportunity to create their own security system and revenue base derived from the resources therein and services provided. This

He told the Commission that based on an examination of the documents McKenzie had obtained the papers from the National Archives and SOCU was not able to conclusively state whether the areas mentioned by the man pertained to the same area subject to investigations.

Quizzed by the CoI’s acting legal attorney, Darren Wade, James said that SOCU is also investigating an audit report

for NICIL as well as the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).

He said for the NICIL audit report, 67 land -related and separate investigations were referred to SOCU and of this number, more than 28 have been completed and submitted to the police for legal advice. Regarding the CH&PA audit, he said a number of investigations were referred and these are the subject of continuous investigations.

would also facilitate some level of competition among the regions that push and facilitate inter-dependency which are healthy indicators for development.

The RDCs and people in the regions should no longer be made to feel that investment in them hinges on political allegiance to central government, neither should any region have to be deprived for not supporting the government in office. Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, would be expected to follow through on President Granger’s call. And given that regional independence is past due, regional chairmen/chairpersons should grab the proverbial bull by the horns and initiate conversations among themselves and work collectively with the regional Members of Parliament and Ministry of Communities to realise a constitutional requirement.

Delay closure of Rose Hall Estate – Corentyne Chambers urges

By Nafeeza Yahya CENTRAL Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) President, Mohamed Rafeek, is calling on government to postpone closure of Rose Hall Estate this year-end to mid-2018 to allow laid-off workers ample time to seek alternative employment.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, he said the move would be helpful since the business climate in Berbice is also suffering a decline.

“During crop time, Rose Hall Estate, from my understanding pays out around G$50 million every month, now you are taking that out of circulation, can you imagine the impact that is going to have in Berbice?; can you imagine what is going to happen in New Amsterdam and those businesses there?

Which is why we are recommending to run the estate up to mid-2018 to allow the workers some time to seek other employment and give us the private sector some time to see if we can get private investors to run the estate to avoid this loss of cash flow,” he said.

Berbicians, especially those on East Berbice, Corentyne are contending that they have seen a reduction of about 35 per cent of business in general and that this is cause for concern in the business community.

Rafeek said based on the numbers from the 1st quarter report, business should have started to pick up by now but this is yet to happen.

He lamented that the economy is based on government’s spending and given the slow release of funds for government contracts, as also expressed by the Minister of Finance, the cash flow is simply not there and the CCCC is asking government to look into this matter.

The capital expenditure as of June 2017 was G$15.8B, an increase of G$2.6B, compared to G$13.2B for June 2016.

However despite this increase in capital expenditure, the figure only represents 27.8 per cent of the G$56.7B budgeted for 2017.

CONTRACTION According to many like John Quinn, a cane harvester from Alness, during the out of crop season they usually get construction work with contractors in the area; however, they have not been getting the amount of work they are accustomed to, putting a strain on them to maintain their families during the out-

of-crop period.

“When is out-of-crop time, I does work with contractors doing construction work but them men not getting the amount of contracts they used to get, is mostly small work them saying them tender but don’t know when the work gon be awarded so we can’t get a bite. I does try lil farming but everybody doing the same thing so prices cheap; me ain’t know what gun happen when them close the other estates cause is more people and not enough jobs,” he lamented.

The economy in Berbice being heavily dependent of agriculture is feeling the squeeze more than other regions due to the decline in prices of rice and sugar, two of the major sources of employment and revenue for the region.

In the first, quarter rice production surged by a whopping 51.5 per cent from 56,593 tonnes in 2016 to 85, 747 in 2017. This, despite lower world market prices, was seen as a contributing factor to the economic growth experienced in the first half.

However, given the heavy rainfall and the over-topping of the Canje Creek that led

to the flooding of the Kakrite Creek Savannah and surrounding areas, many have been forced to reduce the amount of land they usually cultivate, while others have suffered from poor grades due to damaged crops. This is believed to be one of the contributory factors for the current decline in cash flow.

The overall standing as of June 2017 for rice has seen a decrease of US$11M from exports for the same period last year.

of a few estates and seeks diversification as a means of making the remaining estates profitable.

One businessman, who requested anonymity, cited security as being a contributing factor for the decline in business. He related that many families have advised their relatives against coming home in light of the recent jailbreak, despite the authorities having managed to keep the situation under control.

APPROVAL OF U.S. VISAS Another businessman contended that with the recent surge in visa approvals by the U.S. Embassy, many families

have been taking their money abroad to spend.

“There is a significant decline in sales based on what we are accustomed to but you can’t blame the government for everything. If you look at the amount of visitors and permanent visas being granted by the U.S., you will realise a lot of money is being spent out of the country on ticket sales and shopping etc, plus our population is getting smaller and those that normally visit their families in Guyana and would spend here are no longer coming because the Guyanese are going there and visit instead. So this too adds up and will contribute to a decline in sales and as

businessmen we have to find ways and means of coping with this decline.”

With the resumption of the 2nd crop at the Albion and Rose Hall estates and the start of the 1st crop at Skeldon Estate, many are looking forward to increased cash flow in time for the start of the new school year.

Despite businesses declaring a decline in sales, many have already stocked up for the new school year, while others are already looking ahead to the Christmas season and with the huge chunk of money still unspent from the budget, many are optimistic that things will get better.

President holds talks with Baroness Amos ...Guyana’s ‘green’ agenda among issues discussed PRESIDENT David Granger on Wednesday met with Baroness Valerie Amos, now Director of the SOAS-University of London, former Leader of the House of Lords and representative to the United Nations (UN), during which they discussed, among other issues, Guyana’s ‘green’ development pathway.

President Granger, during the meeting, which was held at State House, said that Guyana is committed to combating the effects of climate change and global warming by protecting its biodiversity through the adoption of a ‘green’ development agenda.

According to a Ministry of the Presidency release, President Granger told Baroness Amos that the preservation and sustainable management of the environment are central to Guyana’s development, despite the country’s future as a petroleum-producing nation.

The President also briefed Baroness Amos on his plans to establish Protected Areas in all regions of Guyana in order to devolve greater responsibility for conservation and for environmental protection to the administrative centres across the country.

“It will allow our citizens in those regions to exercise stewardship over their regional protected areas and I am confident that given the varied landscape that we have inherited, every region will be able to have a distinctive, a unique protected area; one that is different from any other region,” he said.

Beharry staff robbed at gunpoint – just doors from Queenstown home CHARISSA Rampersaud, Training Manager at Beharry Restaurant Holdings Inc., was on Tuesday night robbed at gunpoint on Anira Street, Queenstown, a few doors from her home.

According to Commander of ‘A’ Division, the 36-year-old had just parked her vehicle and was walking towards her home after work

She is now the first woman of African descent in the United Kingdom to head a university. Before taking up the post at SOAS, she served as Undersecretary-General for

Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the United Nations (UN). She has also served in a number of roles in the public sector in the United Kingdom, including in local government and as Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Baroness Amos served as an Advisor to the Government of Nelson Mandela on leadership, change, management and strategy issues between 1994 and 1998. She was appointed a Labour Life Peer in 1997 and became a member of the Government of the United Kingdom in 1998. According to her biography, she was a Foreign Office Minister, Secretary of State for International Development, Leader of the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council. She also served as UK High Commissioner to Australia before joining the UN. In June 2016, she was made a Companion of Honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Businessman charged, bailed – for wounding would-be robber A 43-year-old licensed firearm holder on Wednesday appeared before City Magistrate Annett Singh for wounding an alleged robber who attempted to snatch his gold chain.

Lloyd Thomas, a businessman, denied that on August 17 at Grandsand Hill Road, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Anthony Rogers with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.

According to Thomas’

lawyer, Mark Conway, on the day in question, Thomas was in front of his Grandsand Hill Road home when Rogers drove up in a car and attempted to snatch his client’s gold chain, which is worth over $500,000.

At this, Thomas allegedly discharged a round at Rogers.

The lawyer made it a point to note that back in 2016, Rogers was charged for breaking into his client’s home.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had ad-

vised that since the police investigation is still ongoing, Thomas be charged for the lesser count of wounding instead of being indicted of discharging a loaded firearm.

Police Prosecutor, Simone Payne, made no objection to Thomas being released on $50,000 bail, on condition that he report to the Timehri Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trial.

The matter has been transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for October 19.

Cigarette vendors, smokers protest tobacco bill A GROUP of cigarette vendors and smokers on Wednesday afternoon picketed outside the Ministry of Public Health, Brickdam, Georgetown, airing their grievances against certain aspects of the recently passed Tobacco Control Bill.

A protestor, who spoke on behalf of the group of 15, and requested not to be named, claimed that the bill will affect small cigarette vendors and smokers because they will not be able to advertise the sale of cigarettes.

She also claimed that small vendors will be unable to make a living by selling small quantities of loose cigarettes.

Even though tobacco smoke is among the leading causes of death globally, the woman related that a cigarette vendor told her that he paid for his car and supports his family selling cigarettes.

The protest attracted

cigarette vendors around the markets and several city wards. They told Guyana Chronicle that the fines in the bill are harsh and there should be no imprisonment for smoking in public.

They suggested that there should be instead community service for those in breach of the law, pointing out that jailing person for smoking will create more problems as the authorities have been battling to control prison overcrowding.

The bill, which had its genesis under the previous administration, was piloted

by Public Health Minister, Volda Lawrence and passed in the National Assembly.

The Tobacco Control Bill provides for the adoption and implementation of tobacco-control policies in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Hailed as a progressive

legislation, the bill serves as the legal regulator for administration, inspection and enforcement, while providing legislative protection from exposure to second- hand smoke by eliminating public smoking.

It seeks to reduce tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke; prevent tobacco use by minors and protect workers and the public from exposure to tobacco smoke.

The bill also clears the way for the establishment of a National Tobacco Control Council.

The legislation will be enforced by the application of several penalties in the form of fines and prison sentences for “certain transgressions”.

These range from a fine of $200,000 for persons who breach the new regulations, along with six months’ imprisonment, to fines for business entities of up to $9M.

Bandits grab $80,000 from pump attendant AN employee of Ali’s Gas Station escaped unhurt last Saturday night when one of two bandits walked up to him with a gun and relieved him of the night’s sales and fled.

Commander ‘B’ Division, Paul Williams, told the Guyana Chronicle that at about 19:30hrs on Saturday night a pump attendant was on duty at the service station located on Main and Coburg Streets, New Amsterdam

when the robbers pounced on him.

He related that one gunman walked up to the pump attendant and snatched the money out of his hands, which amounted to about $80,000 and fled with his accomplice, who was keeping watch nearby.

Williams added that so far, no arrest has been made but an investigation is under way. The robbery was captured on close circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

e are a people separated by blue sea, we have lands ready to be re-cultivated, we are perennially bathed by the tropical sun, we have palm trees blowing in the wind, we are remarkably unique but collectively diverse, we are ready to be led into the promised land. We are the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)!

In my column entitled Business stakeholder consultations.

Thank you for continuing the dialogue, Joe. My further input is to suggest that we respect the necessary tenets towards CARICOM sustainability where: (1) a robust foundation is laid; (2) public and private investment resources are sourced and rationalized to meet restructuring and growth needs, respectively; (3) the branding of the Caribbean is appealing to global tourists and investors; (4) we convert our assets into wealth; and (5) we encourage educational and experiential exposure from the cradle to the grave.

Most of the organizations to achieve the above are already in place.

The CARICOM Secretariat ought to anchor the process. The Regional Central and Development Banks have the investment resources. The Caribbean Council, Caribbean Tourism Organization, Cricket West Indies, Caribbean Premier League, Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, the Caribbean Food and Music industries and CARIFESTA can brand the Caribbean. The Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce should inspire business growth and be the experiential incubator. The regional universities should advise on backward linkages through the education and training systems to ensure sound people development.

We cannot survive by doing it alone we must foster unity.

What we need is visionary leadership to make it work. Let us pray that this brand of leadership will emerge. Who will that leader (s) be to encourage the diverse captains to get along with each other, to be considerate of one another and to cultivate a life in common as the ships of state sail towards a brighter future?

Ease The Tension — Enjoy A Laugh NO DOGS ALLOWED

GUYANESE SALT FISH CAKES Ingredients: 1 lb. salted cod fish, soaked overnight to remove salt 3 large potato ½ medium onion, finely chopped 2 scallions, finely chopped 10 sprigs thyme leaves removed from stem then finely chopped A small handful of cilantro, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 wiri wiri pepper, finely chopped 1 egg Oil for frying Method: 1. The thyme, garlic, cilantro and scallion can be replaced with 2 ½ tbsps. green seasoning 2. Peel the potato, cut into cubes and place in a pot with cool water and then cook until soft.

3. Strain, then mash using a fork until there are no lumps.

4. Using a fork, flake cod fish into fine bits.

You can also pulse it a few times in a food processor to speed up the process.

5. Next add codfish, mashed potato, 1 egg, onion, scallion, thyme, cilantro, garlic, pepper in a large bowl and mix to combine.

Place a heaping spoonful of mixture into your palm and form a patty. Set aside, then repeat with the remaining mixture.

6. In a frying pan over medium low fire, place enough oil so that it’s approximately ½ inch deep. The oil should be enough to come up halfway the side of the salt fish cakes. When oil is hot, add salt fish cakes and fry for 5 minutes per side until golden brown, turning once to make sure the other side gets brown.

Remove from the oil and let drain on a plate lined with paper towel. Serve warm.

How Does It Jump

ave you ever seen Mexican jumping beans in action? Although these remarkable “beans” are not really beans at all and do not really jump above the surface of the ground, they certainly fascinate people by mysteriously jerking and rolling about for long periods, all by themselves.

Jumping beans are sold in novelty shops and by street vendors in small plastic boxes and in larger containers during summer months on both sides of the American/Mexican border.

The motor of this phenomenon is the larva of the jumping bean moth (Laspeyresia saltitans), which belongs to a large family of moths, some of which are serious agricultural pests. The larvae of the harmful ones attack fruits such as apples, peaches, and cranberries and feed on them. However, the jumping bean moth is not considered an agricultural pest as it only likes jumping bean seeds, which are of no economic importance.

The story starts when the jumping bean shrubs or small trees, growing wild in the deserts of mainland Mexico and in

Mexican Jumping Bean the Cape region of Baja California, begin to bloom during the spring and summer months. One location in the vicinity of Alamos, Mexico, is known as the “jumping bean capital of the world.”

The female jumping bean moth lays her eggs on the green, capsules of female jumping bean flowers. When the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the capsules and begin feeding on the developing

seeds inside. After consuming the seed within the capsule section, the larva begins throwing itself forcibly from one wall to the other, causing movement of the capsule.

Typically, Mexican jumping bean capsules separate into three sections (known as carpels), some of which contain a moth larva.

These carpels are sold as “jumping

glasses and started to walk in.

fter a long weekend at a woman’s country house, a man decided to ask her about the male photograph on her nightstand, which had been bothering him all the time.

In preparation for its so-called jumping activities, the larva spins a silk lining, covering the inner walls of the carpel. It now grasps the silken lining with its forelegs and snaps its body, transferring the full force of its movement to the carpel, causing it to tumble and roll about on a level surface.

Many people keep jumping beans in a shoe box or similar container where the beans can get air and continue their movements and vibrations for weeks or months.

Placing them on a warm object or in the hand generally stimulates them into greater activity.

In time their movements will cease as the larvae undergo metamorphosis.

Up to six months later, often after many people will have completely forgotten about them, adult moths will emerge from the beans. Unless you happen to have jumping bean shrubs growing in your garden, the marvelous life cycle will be terminated as the moths finally die.

Jumping beans will remain motionless during the winter months as the larva transforms into a pupa, and eventually into an adult moth to start a new cycle.

All capsules infested with moth larvae die. Only seeds without larvae will reach maturity and be viable.

A TRIBUTE TO DAWN MOORE-BONNETT “An Angel had dwelt Amongst us”

ast Saturday morning, August 19, 201,7 there was a packed homecoming celebration at the majestic St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hempstead, Long Island. Dozens of Guyana’s prominent families had come to bid farewell to Dawn Moore-Bonnett. There were the Moores, Harpers, Kawalls, Bryants, Nelsons, Richards, Alberts, Bonnetts and the members of the academic community. They had not only come to bid farewell to Dawn, but to pay tribute to her legacy of commitment to her children and family, and compassion to friends and strangers.

When I heard of the sudden and untimely passing of Dawn, I experienced the first stage of grief — de-

I remembered the words of the Jamaican poet, Michael Smith, “mi seh mi cyant believe it.” I could not believe it because Dawn represented life, laughter and joy, not death, sorrow or mourning. The Psalmist tells us that “weeping endureth for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5). In the scriptures the word “Dawn” is synonymous with the word morning, and this particular Dawn has brought joy to her children, grandchildren, spouse, family members and friends.

Dawn Moore-Bonnett was an exceptional human being. To use a legal phrase, she was “sui generis” — one of a kind. I believe that when God created Dawn, he threw away the mold and said to the angels, “one

Dawn Moore is enough for the world.”

Dawn was a long-winded raconteur. When you asked her a specific question about Guyana, she would recite the entire history of Guyana, from the discovery by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1589 to the Independence celebration in 2016.

Dawn Moore-Bonnett was not a hand clapping, or hallelujah-shouting Pentecostal. She was a “proper Episcopalian” who knew instinctively that “death was not the final destination,” and that there was “life beyond the grave.” Like Job, she could declare at the end of her life, “For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at a latter day upon the earth; and though after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh shall I see God.” (Job 19:25-26).

After a productive and fulfilling life, Dawn Moore-Bonnett could say, like the Apostle Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day.” (2nd Timothy 4:78).

As her soul ascends majestically into the celestial realms above, the Lord himself will greet her at the pearly gates with the words “Come ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom reserved for you from the foundations of the world.” (Matthew 25:34).

OUT of 12,684 students who registered for the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams, 16-year-old Michael Bhopaul of Queen’s College (QC) emerged as this year’s top performer.

Bhopaul was among some of the top performers who shared his journey with the Guyana Chronicle.

A resident of Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown, Bhopaul attained gained 24 grade ones and one grade two at this year’s exams. “There weren’t many challenges for me, because I had excellent teachers who worked hard to ensure that I got what I aimed for…My studies were however rigorous, because I did a lot of revision.” The aspiring Professor of Quantum Physics is encouraging persons to believe that if they set their minds to something they can achieve it. Bhopaul’s next move is to pursue the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE) at QC. Rawleeta Barrow, who came in second with 19 grade ones, said that her achievements did not come easily.

She told this newspaper that she studied a lot to get what she aimed for. “It was a learning experience for me.

The support of my parents, teachers and God was also the greatest part about this journey…I decided to write a range of subjects, so that I can keep up with the changes in society,” she said, but indicated that her career choice is to become a lawyer. Cummings, a student of QC, copped 16 ones at this year’s exams, although according to him he did not sacrifice much during his preparation.

The young man intends to move on to the University of Guyana where he will study International Relations.

Keshini Digamber: The Guyana Chronicle was unable to get in contact with young Digamber, but according to the results, the student of the Saraswati Vidya Nakitan (SVN) copped fourth place at this year’s exams with 16 grade ones and one grade three.

Shontel Archer: Archer’s sentiments were related by her father, because she is out of the country. The young lady of SVN secured the fifth position at this year’s exams with 15 grade ones, 3 grade twos and 1 grade three. Her father told this publication that she is a self-motivated person, who sets a goal and achieves it on her own or with little help. He expressed his excitement, noting that his daughter intends to do CAPE at QC. Nicholas Headley: 16-year-old Headley of Anna Regina Secondary was filled with joy, because of his achievement at the CSEC exams. The young man attained 15 ones and 2 twos.

Headley, who expected those results, said that the exams were not challenging for him because he spent a lot of time preparing. “I am on vacation now… I will decide what comes next after I finish enjoying these couple months,” he said.

to explore investment opportunities in Guyana. Mr. Veeramani expressed his high appreciation for the hospitality shown his team, and indicated his interest in aspects of the semi-precious stone industry in Guyana, a country with so much potential, he pointed out. But the semi-precious stones and gem magnate wondered

why there is not more being done to boost the tourism industry and have more merchandise available for sale to tourists at the Kaieteur Falls.

Gem Granites is based at 78, Cathedral Road, Chennai, India. After arriving in Guyana, the Indian business team visited the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). There they presented the GGMC with samples of semi-precious stones from the Indian stone- mining giant Gem Group of Companies.

“Those varieties that they are going to leave with us will certainly put (our lapidary display) on a different platform,” Mr. Dennison pointed out.

Mr. Veeramani, who also chairs the Development Panel for Granite Industry within India’s Ministry of Industry, told Commissioner Dennison that his company has assisted other countries with the promotion and development of their stone industries. “We help other countries in establishing the market and to promote their material,” Mr. Veeramani

disclosed.

Commissioner Dennison noted that establishing this collaboration would help to improve the GGMC’s lapidary section, which remains underdeveloped and under-promoted. “Perhaps this is a good time to see how we can raise the profile and get the lapidary back on the proper footing,” Mr. Dennison said.

Mr. Veeramani is credited with promoting India’s stone industry, whose export market is valued at about $2 billion!

India has identified 200 varieties of stone, and Gem Group has branded more than 70 varieties of those stones.

Several hydro projects in pipeline – as gov’t forges ahead with renewable energy plans A NUMBER of hydro-power projects, both ‘mini’ and ‘micro,’ are in the pipeline, as the government forges ahead with its strategic planning for renewable energy.

This was announced on Friday by Chairman of the National Task Force Commission (NTFC), Major-General (Ret’d) Joseph Singh during a news conference at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

Singh said that the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) as well as international energy agencies are in the process of examining what offers the best opportunities in terms of cost and time.

“Strategic planning, in terms of energy, is on the front burner, whether solar, wind or hydro,” he said, adding that the GEA will shortly be developing a mini hydropower system at Kato in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

Plans are also in train, he said, to have Dynamic Engineering, a local company, resuscitate the hydro-project at Tumatumari, also in Region Eight.

Similar projects are also being developed at Hosororo, in Region One (Barima-Waini), and such other hinterland areas as the North West District.

country, Singh said, so as to create “an energy mix.”

Back in 2012, the then

incumbent People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration had announced that it was pursuing the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP), and that it was to have been funded, to the tune of US$80M, by the Government of Norway under the Guyana Redd+ Investment Fund (GRIF) as part of a government-led Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).

However, the project in its entirety had an estimated cost of US$858M. Dogged by claims of lack of transparency, it was presented to the National Assembly, but the current government, which was then

in opposition, had raised several objections, one of which was that adequate information had not been provided on the financing of the project, while another was that the design had several flaws. As such, it was widely felt at the time that the viability and longevity of the project could not be guaranteed.

With the new government taking office in 2015 with the goal of placing the country on a path of ‘green’ growth, the project was discussed anew with the Norwegian government and an agreement was reached to have an independent third party review the project to determine its viability.

The Government of Norway has since released a report on the review of the

Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) done by Norconsult, an engineering and design consultancy firm out of Norway, which was commissioned to complete an ‘objective, and facts-based’ assessment of the project on the agreement of two Governments.

It was reported that the Guyana Government is working to complete a longterm energy plan, which outlines a mix of renewable energy options, and it is believed that the report has identified several risks and flaws in the design of the project, which threaten its long-term effectiveness and may prove too costly and burdensome to the people of Guyana and the country as a small developing state.

Singh plugs integrated planning – to help make NTFC’s work easier THE National Task Force Commission (NTFC) is blaming the ministries and other public agencies for its inability to produce enough data on certain issues.

“If we ask certain agencies how many persons are

unemployed, how many are homeless, how many are single parents, they don’t have the information to share,” Task Force Chairman, Major General (ret’d) Joseph Singh told a press conference at the Ministry of Public Infrastructure on

Friday.

Given that the Commission is tasked with creating solutions to pertinent issues affecting society, access to information is critical to their work, which makes not being able to do so a major challenge.

Singh couldn’t help but wonder aloud whether the Ministry of Public Health

could provide the Task Force with information on how many people suffer from certain diseases; or for that matter, whether the other ministries would be able to provide them with vital information should they need it.

But thankfully, he said, there are other institutions like the University of Guy-

ana (UG) to turn to, should the need arise, as they, too, have a vital role to play in the collection and management of data.

The Task Force Chairman feels the University can go one step further and instill in students, in theory and practice, the importance of data collection.

The need for training

to share information, he said, has to be taught at an elementary level because, even places like Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and other local government bodies have been found on occasions to withhold information.

Noting that this reluctance to divulge information can cause persons to become reactionary, Singh said, a case in point was the recent flooding in the Hinterland.

What many did not know at the time, he said, was that it was the overtopping of the Ireng and Takutu Rivers, in the first place, that caused the floods, which in turn led to the destruction of farms, cattle and even households.

“Persons did not even know what was going on all along until it was explained to them,” Mr Singh said, adding that up until then, people in the affected areas were unaware that what they were experiencing was essentially a manifestation of the negative impacts of climate change.

This being the case, he said, it is now more important than ever to have a collective approach to dealing with issues affecting the country.

The sharing of information, he said, will be so much easier if only persons can “change their attitudes” and get over their “this-is-my-turf” mindset.

And the one sure-fire way to go, he said, is to have integrated planning.

MINISTER within the Ministry of Natural Resources,Simona Broomes, presented four Albouystown/Charlestown children who performed outstandingly at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) with monetary donations on Friday.

Minister Broomes encouraged the youngsters to continue striving for success despite the challenges they may face.

“When school reopens in September how you looked at it before, I want you to change that in your mind knowing that you are now shaping your country for the future,” Minister Broomes charged the young people.

Eleven-year-old Sarah Singh,secured a place at

Bishops’ High School. She told the Department of Public Information(DPI) that the Minister’s generosity was “unexpected” but “exciting”.

Singh, an aspiring pharmacist who resides in Yarrowdam, said she has had to overcome the challenge of poor roads to get to school but was grateful nonetheless for her family’s support.

“It’s really exciting when you have your whole family around you and you get the education you deserve,” she said.

Aidan Allicock, 12 years’ old, who is heading to Queen’s College, would like to become either a veterinarian or an astronomer. He said the minister’s gesture left him feeling “very enlightened and very privileged”.

It was a similar sentiment from Walanda Wilson. The 12-year-old also secured a place at Queen’s College.

“I’m glad, very, very happy,” she said. The aspiring pediatrician said she was confident that Minister Broome’s donation would be very helpful.

“I don’t know what books I have to get yet but I’m sure it will help,” she added.

Meanwhile, the day was extra special for Demetrius Drup and Daniel Robertson of Albouystown whose wishes of personally meeting a minister came through.

“I am excited because I got to meet a minister which is what I wanted. I wanted to meet someone in politics,” said 11-year-old Drup, who is aspiring to become a politician.

HIRING FAMILY MEMBERS There are other benefits to hiring a family member. As a business owner, you're responsible for paying Federal Income Contributions Act (FICA) and Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) taxes on wages paid to your employees. FICA is the law requiring employers and employees to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. FUTA is the law that establishes Federal Unemployment Taxes.

As with wages paid to all employees, wages paid to family members are subject to withholding of certain taxes in some states. Typically, the payment of these taxes will be a deductible business expense for tax purposes. But if you hire family member--a child, spouse or parent as an employee--to work for your business you may not have to pay FICA and FUTA taxes.

For instance, you don't have to pay FUTA taxes for services performed by a child under 21 years old. And you don't have to pay FICA taxes for a child under 18 and works in your trade or business or a partnership owned solely by you and your spouse.

For family members under age 18, you don't have to withhold for FICA, Medicare, FUTA and SUTA. If your spouse is employed, you don't have to withhold for FUTA and SUTA, but must withhold for FICA and Medicare.

Meanwhile, if you employ your spouse to work in your trade or business, the payments are subject to FICA taxes and federal income tax withholding, but not FUTA taxes. This rule doesn't apply if your spouse works for a corporation--even if you control it--or a partnership--even if your spouse is a partner along with you. In that case, you will have to pay FUTA taxes.

If you employ a parent in your trade or profession, his or her wages are subject to income tax withholding and the FICA taxes, but not FUTA taxes. You can also pay your parents wages for legitimate work with taxdeductible dollars from your business.

Generally, if your total income for the year doesn't exceed the standard deduction plus one exemption and you aren't a dependent to another taxpayer, then you don't need to file a federal tax return. The amount of income that you can earn before you are required to file a tax return also depends on the type of income, your age and your filing status.

‘We stand committed’ – President reassures Indigenous community gov’t got its back

By Ariana Gordon PRESIDENT David Granger on Monday gave every reassurance that his government is committed to the continued development of the country’s Indigenous Peoples.

He was at the time delivering the feature address at the 11th Conference of the National Toshaos Council NTC), being held at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), at Turkeyen, on the lower East Coast of Demerara Themed “Good governance: A brighter future for Guyana’s First Peoples”, the week-long conference will see Indigenous leaders discuss matters of major importance to their well-being and that of their communities.

In a short address, the President told the packedto- capacity audience in the CPCE auditorium, that the NTC is of paramount importance and should not be treated as a talk shop, but as a workshop that will ensure the continued development of Indigenous Peoples.

He stressed that the NTC is intended to be a forum that plans and solves problems, while the government’s role is to give whatever support is needed with the aim of advancing the social and economic welfare of the country’s Indigenous Peoples.

In fact, the President said the Conference’s theme is most suitable, as the village leaders have gathered to discuss and find solutions. Of major concern to the Indigenous population is their right to traditional lands, which has been a recurring issue.

Meanwhile, the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into land allocation, land management and land titling began on Monday.

President Granger reminded his audience that while the Indigenous Peoples do have rights to 14 per cent of the lands here, it is becoming increasingly challenging to define the boundaries of those lands.

nities are not only isolated, but also lack proper communication, for the very reason that because they are so farflung, it’s difficult to access many of them.

He acknowledged that while there are a myriad of problems confronting Indigenous communities here, the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples would be meaningless if the State does not pay attention to, and take responsibility for, the quality of life within them.

The president reminded his audience, too, that the NTC, under the Amerindian Act, is responsible for promoting good governance, and the preparation, planning and improvement of the quality of life of the Indigenous Peoples and their communities.

Noting that the foregoing responsibilities are mandatory, President Granger called on representatives of the NTC to ensure that the social and economic conditions of the Indigenous population are improved.

Recalling that he’d proposed back in 2015 a 10-point strategic, holistic plan for Hinterland Development, he reminded those present that the intention was to propose solutions to the problems facing Indigenous communities.

LORD INVADER Lord Invader travelled to New York in 1941 to record calypsos and promote kaiso.

His most famous composition is “Rum and Coca-Cola”, which became a hit for the Andrews Sisters. Morey Amsterdam, the comedian and actor best known for his role as Buddy Sorrell in the Dick van Dyke Show, was credited as its lyricist. Invader sued and after a seven-year court case, was awarded unspecified compensation.

Roaring Lion is best known for composing and singing “Mary Ann” and “Netty Netty.”

King Radio composed well known hits as "Mathilda", "Man Smart, Woman Smarter" and "Brown Skin Gal".

THE YOUNG BRIGADE Regular performers at The Young Brigade included: Alwin Roberts — Lord Kitchener (1922-2000), who had been with the Old Brigade; Fitzroy Alexander — Lord Melody (1926-1988) and Theophilus Philip — Mighty Spoiler (March 1926-December 1960); Clifton Ryan — Mighty Bomber (January 1928- , St. George’s, Grenada); and Slinger Francisco — Mighty Sparrow.

Growling Tiger gave Alwin Roberts the name Grandmaster when they were performing at the Victory Tent because he said he was born to sing kaiso. His music is so well suited for steel band, that he won the Road march title 13 times, the most of any calypsonian in history: 1946 "Jump in Line" 1963 "The Road" 1964 "Mama dis is Mas" 1965 "My Pussin'" 1967 "Sixty-Seven" 1968 "Miss Tourist" 1970 "Margie" 1971 "Mas in Madison Square Garden" 1973 "Rainorama" 1975 "Tribute to Spree Simon" 1976 "Flag Woman" He won his only Calypso King title in 1975 with "Tribute to Spree Simon". He stopped competing in 1976.

Some of his immortal hits are: “Nora”, “Trouble in Arima”, “Tie Tongue Mopsy”, “Old Lady Walk a Mile And A Half” and every Christmas morning I play “Drink yuh Rum —Its Christmas.”

One of the best known cricket calypsos is the “Victory Calypso.” Some calypso historians credit it to Lord Beginner. It was written on the spot when West Indies defeated England at Lords in the second Test

match in 1950. Wikipedia Encyclopaedia credits it to Kitchener on the authority of Tony Cozier who attended the Test. A teacher of mine in the old days, Jack Waterloo, always stressed the clarity of Kitchener and his perfect pronunciation. I love Sparrow and Baron; but I place Lord Kitchener above them.

Lord Melody was always in Guyana when I was a boy. His close friend was Sherlan Wilson (King Fighter), Guyana’s greatest calypsonian. Melo sang kaisos, such as "Boo Boo Man", "Creature From The Black Lagoon", "Shame & Scandal", "Jonah and the Bake", "Juanita", “Ice Man”, “Brown Sugar”, “Going Back To Africa” and "Rastaman Be Careful". Some argue that he is the purest calypsonian of the lot.

In his teens, he moved to Arima, where he became life-long friends with Kitchener.

When Kitchener emigrated to England in 1947, he was the leading calypsonian in the Young Brigade Tent.

Spoiler was the wittiest Trinidadian calypsonian ever. His calypsos include: “Magistrate try Himself”, “Bedbug”, “Picking Sense from Nonsense”, “Talking Backwards” and ‘Tarzan.” He won the first National Crown in 1947 with “Bedbug” and again in 1955 with “Making Sense Out Of Nonsense.”

MIGHTY SPARROW Everyone has his/her favorite calypsonian. Some like Spoiler, others like Melody.

Kitchiner, Rootsman, Black Stalin, Chalk

Dust, Ras Shorty I, David Rudder, Sugar Aloes or Baron, but Sparrow is loved by all.

The first time I heard “Maria”, it was so smooth, so cool, so graceful, so sweet that I felt no one could top Sparrow with his melodious voice. Until Baron came along, he had the sweetest voice of all.

Sparrow won the Road March eight times and Calypso Monarch eight times. In 1956, he won the Road March and Calypso crown titles with “Jean and Dinah.” He repeated the feat in 1960 with “Ten to One is Murder” and “Mae Mae.” In 1955, Sparrow recorded “No Doctor No” and “Yankees back Again” for GEMS Records and “Jean and Dinah” for Veejay Special Ace. I cannot mention this last one without repeating what I was told many years ago by a calypsonian of Sparrow’s time. He said that Mighty Sparrow and Lord Blakey were in jail around the same time.

Blakey composed “Jean and Dinah” and gave a copy to Sparrow. Birdie was released before the Lord and hurriedly released it as his own. Whether true or not, the style of the song is pure Blakey.

Sparrow has sung too many songs for me to comment on all. When I emigrated to Toronto, my first friends were Bajans, who used to tease me every time we played two Sparrows — “One BG plantain does full up de pot” and “I don’t care if all of BG burn down, But they’ll be putting me out the way if they trouble Tiger Bay and burn down the hotel, where all dem Wabbins does stay.” (to be continued next week)

the returns in improved declarations. In addition, it is hoped that with the syndicates, miners will come together and work as a team, expensive equipment (bulldozers, excavators, etc) should not be idle; join together and help each other to move ahead,” the Natural Resources Minister declared.

Trotman singled out the awardee for environmental stewardship. “We are a developing nation, and in order to grow, all of us need a shoulder to stand on, so thanks for being that shoulder. So, to all the hard working, dedicated members of the mining fraternity in Guyana, I salute you.

Do not be influenced by the few bad examples amongst you. Rather, influence them to do good deeds and thereby lift the standard of the Industry to new heights.”

Mining Week 2017 is being observed under the banner of this year’s theme: “Mining Clean; Living Green”. This year’s celebrations will culminate with Pork Knockers Day next weekend. Trotman said it is being held against a bigger backdrop surrounding two issues.

THE police have confirmed that the 11 juveniles who escaped from the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) on Sunday were all recaptured on Monday morning.

Reports are that the six females and five males made their escape bid from the juvenile offenders’ holding facility at Onderneeming, on the Essequibo Coast at around 17:15hrs on Sunday.

Two of the six females were reportedly recaptured shortly thereafter, while the remaining nine escapees were recaptured around 06:00hrs on Monday morning not far from the facility.

The NOC has been having their fair share of problems of late, where as recent as last February two juveniles serving time there broke free from the facility.

Then in 2012, a female dormitory was set on fire and there was a mass escape. Reports indicate that from all appearances, that breakout was well planned, as the inmates, who were in six separate dormitories, simultaneously began freeing themselves.

Modern roundabout 50% complete – some road closures necessary to complete project THE Carifesta Avenue/ Vlissengen Road Roundabout Project is half way done and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) has advised that some temporary road closures will be necessary to complete the project.

This will result in some inconvenience to motorists and road users and the ministry is asking the public to exercise patience and to use alternative routes from today. Weather permitting, the traffic disruption will last for just three weeks.

According to a Department of Public Information (DPI) release, traffic will be

diverted through Alexander Street, and MPI Maintenance Engineer, Sherod Parkinson, is urging road users, “to take precaution as they use Alexander Street, David Street and Barr Street to access lower Georgetown.”

Parkinson also explained that the contractors need to connect the newly installed pumps at the Kitty Pump Station, where a major sinkhole had developed several months ago. This has since been filled in prior to the commencement of the roundabout project. Parkinson also disclosed that the first and second phases

of the project are completed. The third phase will see works on the Sandal Place section extending to the centre of the carriage way.

Once the third phase of the project is completed, the final phase of connecting all the roads – Carifesta Avenue, Seawall Road, Rupert Craig Highway and Vlissengen Road will begin. This $127.1M road improvement project is due to be completed by year-end and will allow for a smoother and unhindered flow of traffic at the busy intersection. $56.5M earmarked for expansion of Railway Embankment road SOME $56M has been earmarked for the expansion of the Railway Embankment Road from next month, Ministry of Public Infrastructure Senior Project Engineer, Kester Hinds, has said.

Hinds explained that these road enhancements will reduce traffic congestion in the vicinity of the National Aquatic Centre, the Giftland Mall and the CARICOM Secretariat (between Liliendaal and Cummings Lodge).

Some $56.5M has been earmarked for the project which will see the construction of two east bound lanes Hinds said. This expansion will facilitate the smoother flow of traffic for persons living on the East Coast, Demerara and persons visiting the mall. Shoulder lanes to accommodate bus stops will

also be built.

Earlier this year the Lilliendaal Bridge underwent construction, and was reopened after three months of extensive works. The bridge now has walkways on both sides of the structure which caters for pedestrians, and cyclists. The $89M project was undertaken by H. Nauth & Sons Civil Engineering Contractors. Additionally, four bridges along the Railway Embankment road have been earmarked for rehabilitation for this year, Maintenance Engineer of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI), Sherod Parkinson has said.

“Most of the bridges on the Railway embankment are these aqua panel bridges or steel bridges. They have been there for quite some time and some of the steel rust members are beginning to fail,” as a result the Ministry has been

on top of it, ensuring that the bridges are fixed, the Maintenance Engineer explained.

This was the situation with the Liliendaal Bridge, following an investigation by the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) Inspection Team and engineers attached to the MPI; it was recommended that the bridge be repaired. Works which commenced early in March to prevent a collapse of the bridge, were fast tracked to complete the repairs before the end of June.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson earlier this year had committed to focusing on infrastructural development across the country – with two bridges completed, and the Annandale and Lusignan Bridges slated for reconstruction this week. These rehabilitative projects are expected to be

completed by year end.

Excavator crushes repairman to death at Mahdia A MAN was crushed under the weight of an excavator he was repairing at the Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) mining community of Mahdia on Tuesday.

The man, whose identity is being verified, was rushed to the Mahdia District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Reports are that the machine rolled over the man after he asked an assistant to start the engine. He died instantly, eyewitnesses told the Guyana Chronicle.

The man is not from the area, residents reported. The incident was reportedly not mining-related, since it occurred along the roadway in the Seven Mile area on the outskirts of Central Mahdia. It is being

They are the stock in trade steered into incarceration by a judicial system that incarcerates minorities and immigrants to feed those evil puppet masters who thrive on exploiting and enslaving them. Moreover, nearly 50,000 unauthorized immigrants were ordered removed from the U.S., a 28 percent increase over

last year, according to statistics released by the immigration review branch of the U.S Department of Justice, an inhumane act which destroyed families, businesses and dreams in its wake.

The 22 percent is much higher than the population of foreign-born in the U.S. as a whole-13.5 percent. Moreover, the government confirmed more than 42,000 aliens in federal prisons as of June 24, 2017. About 47 percent already face final deportation orders, making them illegal immigrants, and three percent are currently in immigration courts facing deportation proceedings. Almost all of the rest are being probed by federal agents looking to deport them.

The DOJ’s Executive Office of Immigration Review’s data also revealed that total orders of removal combined with voluntary departures by immigrants in the U.S. between Feb. 1 and July 31, 2017 were up close to 31 percent over that same period last year. Final decisions issued by immigration judges also rose 14.5 percent during that time frame this year, the DOJ said recently.

There was also a total of 73,127 final decisions issued by immigration judges between February and the end of July this year, compared to 63,850 issued during the same period last year.

The boost in orders of removal over last year is undoubtedly the consequence of President Trump’s signing of an executive order on January 25 requiring more stringent enforcement on immigration. It also mandated the hiring of 10,000 more immigration officers, targeted funding for so-called sanctuary cities and revived a controversial information sharing program known as Secure Communities, which allows fingerprints of arrested individuals to be checked against U.S. Department of Homeland Security databases.

The agency mobilized more than 100 existing immigration judges to DHS detention facilities across the country

after Trump signed his January order, triggering a 90 percent increase of the cases those new judges oversaw resulting in orders or removal requiring unauthorized immigrants to depart or be removed. The Justice Department has also hired an additional 54 immigration judges since Trump took office “and continues to hire new immigration judges each month.”

In contrast, between Feb. 1 and July 31 this year, 49,983 unauthorized immigrants were ordered removed, compared to 39,113 last year. Another 7,086 unauthorized immigrants agreed to voluntarily depart the U.S., bringing the total removal and voluntary departures so far this year to 57,069, whereas the total orders of removal and voluntary departures in that same six months last year was 43,595.

When juxtaposed with the unholy alliance between his racist base of white supremists, neo-Nazis, the KKK and other hate and bigotry groups, the present administration’s assault on immigrants is most un-American and mitigates us as a nation, and must be stopped!

Crippled murder accused found dead in prison

SHELTON George called “Boories,” who was awaiting trial for the 2014 alleged murder of Debra Blackman at Delicious Chinese Restaurant was found dead in the holding area at Lusignan Prison, East Coast Demerara, early Tuesday morning.

Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, confirmed that George was found at about 06:00hrs in an unresponsive state and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where doctors examined him and pronounced him dead.

Samuels said that he is unaware George had received any injuries which could have contributed to his death but a probe is underway.

Meanwhile, at George’s residence at Lot 146 South Better Hope, also on the

East Coast Demerara, where he used to reside with his mother and siblings prior to his arrest earlier this year, there was a sombre atmosphere as relatives tried to process the news of his death in prison.

According to Rosaline Munroe, mother of the dead prisoner, she received a telephone call from a private number stating her son was taken to the hospital. The woman added that when she reached the health facility she was told he had succumbed. The mother of four said that she was told that George was crying out for intense pains in his chest and he had a headache as well.

Munroe related that she was also informed that her son was panting for breath before he breathed his last, after which he was rushed to the hospital. She was told that by the time he reached

the hospital he had no pulse or heartbeat when he was examined by medical professionals.

The woman stated that she last saw her son on Monday when he showed up for his court case at the George-

town Magistrates’ Court, where he seemed to be well and did not complain to her about feeling ill. Munroe said that she also spoke to George at about 19:50hrs via cell phone from Lusignan Prison and he did not say he

GRA seizes over 25,000lbs of smuggled chicken SWIFT action by the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has resulted in the removal of a large quantity of seized foreign chicken from two separate cold- storage facilities in the Berbice area after it was discovered that the commodities were unlawfully being disposed of by the curators.

In a release, the GRA said enforcement activities over the past week led to it seize 190 boxes and one pack of chicken from one of the locations in Corentyne, Berbice and 52 boxes and one pack from another facility at Annandale on the East Coast

of Demerara.

According to the GRA, two individuals were arrested in connection with the act and placed on station bail. The revenue body believes that they were trying to dispose of a total of 375 boxes weighing approximately 15,000 lbs of chicken.

Meanwhile, other exercises were also conducted simultaneously at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice and Bourda Market, leading to the discovery of more irregularities in the sale of uncustomed chicken and prompting appropriate seizures and legal action. The GRA said it seized an aggregate 268 boxes and two (2) packs of chicken weighing approximately 10,720 lbs.

That amount was handed over to the Ministry of Public Health for appropriate use at the instruction of the commissioner-general.

“The GRA in its future efforts to minimise recurrences of this nature and to avert the likelihood of smuggled chicken re-entering the market, will be donating such seizures for utilisation by the appropriate ministries and other state agencies, rather than offering them for sale to the general public.” The Authority meanwhile said it is in the process of procuring and establishing cold-storage facilities in its warehouses in Berbice and Georgetown.

Man robbed at traffic light AN East Bank Demerara man sustained a gunshot wound on Monday during a daring mid-afternoon robbery at the corner Vlissengen Road and Lamaha Street in the city.

The footage showed a young man, dressed in a grey t-shirt, dark coloured pants and a red cap, entering the restaurant and standing by the counter. He was the shooter. He was also accompanied by two others. The shooter remained standing at the counter and was recorded gazing around the restaurant. His face remained visible throughout the recording.

The man then left the restaurant and mounted a motor cycle which sped off.

On the second matter, George was accused of attempting to murder former magistrate, Mohamed Faizal Azeez, who is still bed-ridden. Azeez, of Kitty, was held in 2015 at gun point for cash in Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

A 94-year-old man was on Tuesday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on a charge of conspiracy to forge a transport in 2003.

Fitz Rupert Lewis of First Street, Cummings Lodge, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $50,000 bail.

Particulars of the charge allege that between November 1, 2003 and November 30, 2003, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he allegedly conspired with others to forge transport # 380 of 1981.

Lewis’s attorney, Roger Yearwood, told the court that his

Remembering Andrew “Monster” Lyght . . . Light Years Ahead Of His Time

beautiful cricket moment occurred at the conclusion of the Sheffield vs. Atlantis cricket match this season at Floyd Bennett Cricket Field in Brooklyn, New York. It was not the jubilation often associated with a championship victory or even the presentation of an MVP award. It was a Most Valuable Moment, which may have inspired a few young cricketers present.

The two teams from New York—Atlantis Cricket Club and Sheffield Cricket Club, competing in the 40-overs Clement “Busta” Lawrence Premier League tournament in the New York Metropolitan District Cricket Association fixture, enjoy the support of scores of fans of Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Malteenoes cricket clubs respectfully. The latter two clubs are domiciled in the South American nation of Guyana, and enjoy a rivalry dating back almost 100 years. The clubs, most notably DCC, have produced many regional and West Indian cricketers of caliber, and have long been conduits for players migrating from Guyana to the USA. The outcome of the Atlantis vs.

Sheffield match-up was of little significance, although Sheffield did win the encounter. The 9-2 Atlantis had already advanced to the play-offs of the tournament, while 4-7 Sheffield failed to make the play-off round. Outside of the scheduled match organized by Sheffield and Malteenoes’ Dr. Linden Dodson, the opportunity was taken to remember someone as large as the game of cricket in the cricketing Diaspora of Guyana — Andrew “Monster” Lyght (1956-2001), a former member of the Demerara Cricket Club, and a passionate batsman.

It is often said that Monster — a moniker given him by virtue of his appetite for batting and how difficult it was to get him out; it was as if he was haunting the bowlers. It’s unfortunate that Andrew Lyght never went on to represent the West Indies’ senior team, and that was a loss for the West Indies.

Described by former DCC club member Keith Aaron, as being extremely passionate about the sport of cricket, especially batting, Monster would often pay slight regard to the conditions of the pitch, and simply wanted to bat always, whether his team had won the toss or not.

Keith remembers Andrew Lyght playing in his debut first division cricket match for DCC in Georgetown, Guyana, and scoring 44 in a low-scoring game, which included a star-studded set of Guyana national players. He was a slightly built teenager at the time, who had a lot of power in his shots and impressed many seasoned cricketers.

“I was very impressed with his performance because he carried his bat through the innings and was, maybe the last to get out. He hit no boundaries and probably only a couple of doubles but his discipline and concentration were evident.

I remember saying that he would get far because it was easier to teach a batsman

the technical aspects of the craft than to inculcate in him the discipline to bat under difficult circumstances.”

As his name became a household one in Guyana’s cricket, Andrew Lyght’s game developed rapidly with an aggressive approach to batting, stroke play and fielding.

He showed tremendous heart as he courageously batted against the best bowlers of Guyana. Although he was aggressive in his approach to batting, it was obvious that he had tremendous discipline and power of concentration for a player so young.

Delivering a very poignant memory of Andrew Lyght as a cricketer and human being, Keith Aaron, a former Guyana youth cricketer and Colts captain reiterated, “Monster would willingly play any role that was asked of him without question. I never heard him criticize or blame another player for any errors. He was always supportive and willingly accepted responsibility for the performance of his team. I remember how he cried when we lost a game by one run against Police. He opened the batting and got out early. However, we were chasing only 122 and blame could easily have been directed at any of us who followed him, since we only needed two more runs to win. Yet Monster insisted that he was to blame,” adding: “I am sure that any of Andrew's teammates from the Guyana youth teams, Guyana National teams and the West Indies 'A' team would corroborate my observations that he was an unselfish and supportive teammate.”

As a human being, Andrew Lyght was also humble and never made any demands for special treatment when he returned from an overseas tour to play for his club. He was the type of person who would fly back in the morning and play for his club in the afternoon. Such a passionate and unselfish cricketer is often hard to find.

Keith Aaron also noted: “He loved to bat and it seemed as though there were no conditions that he felt were unsuitable for batting. In fact, his team mates used to tease him by saying that he should never be consulted for his opinion when they won the toss, because he would always want his team to bat first.”

With young players on both Atlantis and Sheffield teams, some of whom have played for DCC and Malteenoes in Guyana, it was only fitting that the virtues of such a fine player as Andrew Lyght were extolled in the presence of many players who are now his age, when he played at his peak. The players stood around in a circle and listened to former players such as Keith Aaron and Dr. Linden “Doc” Dodson, as the two gentlemen recalled moments in the presence of Andrew Lyght. It was obvious that the legacy of the “Monster” was having an impact on the younger players gathered at Floyd Bennett Field, at the conclusion of the match which was billed as an Andrew “Monster” Lyght Memorial Match, complete with a trophy to be competed for between the two teams every year, with the

As a cricketer, Andrew “Monster” Lyght represented DCC, Guyana’s Under-19, West Indies Under-19, Demerara County, Guyana, and the Guyana National XI. He played for five years in the English County leagues during the 1980s, and as an opening batsman he was often compared to such greats as, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes. However, in his 44 years of life he represented the good in many of us, the determination to survive and the spirited discipline needed when faced with adversity.

Diagnosed with cancer in the mid1990s, Andrew Lyght doggedly fought the disease ravaging his body. He adopted a Rastafarian lifestyle, in hopes that eating natural herbs and no meat would prolong his life and cricketing career — and it did.

Keith Aaron recalls, “Some might say that the game of cricket is a useful metaphor for life itself. By the way in which he dealt with adversity, Andrew provided strong evidence in support of this view. As a batsman he was bold and disciplined, and regardless of the odds against him, he never gave up but fought to the end. He demonstrated these same attributes in his battle against cancer.”

He was diagnosed with a localized malignant tumor in his late twenties or

A few years later, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to other parts of his body and the prognosis was not good. After trying different treatments in England, he got progressively weaker. The doctors said there was nothing more they could do so he returned to Guyana.

Despite his weakened condition, Andrew vowed to play cricket again. That was who Andrew Lyght was, the embodiment of spirit and cause. After adopting the Rastafarian lifestyle, he gradually improved in strength and restarted his cricket career.

Keith Aaron further noted how fortunate he was to witness the return of the “Monster”: “I was fortunate to see him make his first century during his recovery period. Since he had not yet returned to his full strength, it reminded me of that first game he played for DCC as a slightly built underdeveloped teenager. Power strokes had not returned but it was obvious that he had never lost his grit, determination and fighting spirit; he had just diverted them to the battle against cancer.”

Despite his prowess as an aggressive stroke player, Andrew “Monster” Lyght may be best remembered for his fight off the field of cricket, and inspiring others faced with similar adversities in life.

Andrew lost his battle with cancer in 2001. He was only 44 years old.

His friend and teammate Keith Aaron summed it up best: “Andrew lived a simple life, for about a decade after his recovery, playing the game he loved, and without words, infecting those around him with his sportsmanship, team spirit, generosity and fighting spirit.”

And so, some of the youngsters huddled around a simple trophy on a table at Floyd Bennett Field, learned who Andrew “Monster” Lyght was, but more importantly about life’s lesson and the determination to fight on, no different from a batsman getting bogged down in an inning by a bowler determined to uproot the sticks behind you.

Gaskin is perhaps remembered above all else for his contribution to the administration of cricket in Guyana, rather than for his outstanding exploits on the field. There was nobody in the world who loved cricket anymore than he did. Gaskin who died on May 2, 1979 at the age of 71, played for British Guiana for almost a quarter of a century between 1929 and 1953.

As a cricket administrator, Gaskin could be ranked with the "best' anywhere the glorious sunshine game is played, and his the astute brain, unparalleled knowledge of the finer points of the game and the ability to solve problems without ruffling feathers were all qualities he possessed and used as no one could.

As an uncompressing disciplinarian, he tolerated no word or deed that even hinted at "sharp practice". But despite the martinet in him, there was no friendlier person on and off the field than "Skins", or Mae West as he was fondly referred to by some of his fans, who enjoyed the joke with an understanding equal to the situation. Such was the love for, and unswerving dedication to the game, that he more than anyone else, deserved the sobriquet "Mr. Cricket".

Gaskin was dedicated to the youth of Guyana, many of whom benefited from his advice and other assistance, sometimes monetarily, to their lasting credit. A fine ballroom dancer, Gaskin graced many a dance floor in the city, all part of the cultural development of a man of whom it could be said "he walked with Kings but never lost the common touch."

His exploits, modest though they were, started back in 1929 when he made his debut in the Inter-colonial series against Trinidad at the Queen's Park Oval, under the captaincy of Maurice Green. Gaskin had the loveliest action imaginable, established his reputation as a dangerous swinger of the ball both ways. One afternoon at Bourda, against the powerful Bajans, he snapped up three wickets for no runs to help prevent the visitors from amassing a big total when they were set to do so. Gaskin played with George Headley, one of Cricket's immortals at Bridgetown, Barbados in 1948.

When asked several years later how he would compare the great Jamaican with the then outstanding players, headed by the "Ws", Garry Sobers and Rohan Kanhai, he replied: "They could sit in the same cathedral as George, but not in the same pew." over the years which culminated with Worrell as skipper and Gaskin as team manager of the victorious 1963 West Indies tour to England.

This is what Berkley Gaskin said of Worrell: "One morning early in 1944, I walked out of Queen's Park Oval pavilion, Port-ofSpain, on my way to the nets. I was accompanied by a Trinidadian-born ex-Test player.

He pointed in the direction of a small crowd of youngsters surrounding a tall, lithe and slim young man. My companion's lips curled into a sneer, and he acidly asked, "Do you know the great Frank Worrell?" I replied I did not, and he continued, "There he is, surrounded by a crowd of admirers: that is what he loves — conceited little puppy."

Of course I knew of Frank Worrell —who in the West Indies had not read or heard of his magnificent innings of 308 runs, which resulted in a record unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 502 with John Goddard. I enquired of my companion Frank Worrell's age, and was told between 17 and 18.

you have been if, at 17 or 18 you had made 308 runs in a representative match? I walked away from this ex-Test match player and moved unobstructively toward the edge of the little crowd, and there was Frank Worrell vehemently, denying that he had special gifts, and claiming that his success was due to practice and more practice, and going on to exhort them to practice.

I introduced myself to Frank, and he told me that he had heard of me, but although I had played in Barbados, he had never seen me play. I discovered very early a friendship, which lasted until death, that which was considered conceit was a quiet assurance in his own talents, and more importantly, he refused to allow himself to be treated as an inferior by those who, in that era, arrogated to them-

selves to accept cricketers of color only on the basis of their performance on the cricket field. It was in this sociological climate that Frank Worrell began his career and for years he and a few others fought to equalize things.

One writer during the 1950 West Indies series in England described an innings by Worrell as "beginning at high noon without any dawn." This statement may with equal certitude describe the man's life. For in his early teens, his attitude to the sociology of the situation in the West Indies was surprisingly adult and progressive. He was a rebel and with a great cause.

It must not be thought that before his arrival on the scene of cricket, there had been no protests. Sir Learie Constantine, Herman Griffith — the first man to bowl Bradman, neck and crop for a duck in Test cricket — and others had protested. But in their time the plantocracy had not yet disappeared. Frank's arrival on the scene coincided with the beginning of that liberalism which now permeates the West Indian scene and so perhaps, his task was less difficult, for then only the reactionaries were making the last-ditch stand.

He was an unregistered Trade Unionist, working relentlessly for better conditions, better salaries, and more importantly, working for the recognition of the West Indian cricketer as a person. His articulation of all

his hopes for the West Indies cricketers did not endear him to the establishment, which still comprised the plantocracy — but with the recurrent success of the West Indies team and the ushering in of the new personalities of the West Indies Board, his dreams of better conditions and recognition became realities.

One may say that his own appointment as captain of the West Indies Team was a fitting tribute to his almost single-handed battle against the established practice of appointing a representative of the privileged classes to captaincy, irrespective of his ability. To write about Frank Worrell without any reference to his genius as a player would seem to be hearsay, but what can I say that has not been already said? To me he brought majesty to the game; he was an aristocrat on the field — bowling, batting and fielding, every moment was one of effortless grace and authority.

As a captain he always seemed to be one move ahead of the opponent. Often in the 1963 series in England, I would marvel at the shrewdness of his tactics. It would seem to me as though the right move came to him intuitively; I had to reason it out before recognizing how right he was. I had known Frank for a great number of years. Increasingly, as the years went by I found new facets of greatness in his personality and this quite apart from his skippering on the field or his tremendous knowledge of the game. He evoked from the team respect and affection that were quite fantastic.

J. S. Barker. writing in his "Summer Spectacular," had this to say: "His (Worrell's) presence graces the game, his personality dignifies it, and his intelligence does it honor.

Worrell's swan song as a Test cricketer was not only an anthem of victory — it was a song of praise in which there were no sour notes and in which everybody joined without exception — Cricket in 1963 was Frank Worrell's."

For my part I would like to remember him, as I saw him, sitting on so many occasions, giving a word of encouragement to some young player, who was having a lean time — and particularly the occasion when Seymour Nurse, who had been having a poor time and who blossomed forth after Frank had said to him, "Old man, it is not how you begin, but how you end."

Frank Worrell's death diminished me, and has left the world saddened by which would seem to be the eclipse of a bright sun at high noon.

Gajanand Singh joined Walton, but his stay at the crease was short, and at the end of the Powerplay, the Warriors were 71-2.

Unperturbed by those dismissals, Walton raised his fifty just off 27 balls, with five fours and three sixes. He and Guptill added 71 for the second wicket, with the captain contributing 27 off 33 balls.

However, both were dismissed in the 17th over, bowled by Pollard, with the Warriors 15 runs short of the target.

Jason Mohammed and Assad Fudadin took the score to 152 before Pollard removed Mohammed and Paul off consecutive balls in the 19th over.

The Warriors will now play the St Lucia Stars tomorrow from 18:00hrs.
