Guyana Properties Inc enters real estate industry –– over 100 to be employed, a gamut of local and international services on offer

By Rabindra Rooplall A SUCCESSFUL group of international business leaders officially joined the real estate industry in Guyana offering new services while opening up vacancies for over 100 persons under their company Guyana Properties (GP) Inc. GP Inc. is a one-stopshop for “World Class Real Estate Services”.

This was disclosed on Friday by their legal representative Attorney, Sase Gunraj, at a press briefing held at Parc Rayne, Rahaman’s Park, East Bank Demerara.

The company representatives are Myrna Nieves (President), who is a successful US-based business leader with decades of experience in the financial services and real estate industry; Paul Ramkissoon (Chief Technology Officer); Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Chief Marketing Officer, West Indies cricket legend); and Chief Executive Officer, Surendra “Chris” Thakoorpersad.

Further, he said that Guyana Properties Inc. intends to work with local players towards the development of the industry, to benefit all.

Noting that Guyana lacks the legal and legislative framework to govern the real estate industry, Gunraj said Attorney-General, Anil Nandlall, has made public pronouncements about introducing legislation to regulate the industry.

“That is something Guyana Properties welcome, in addition to that it is hoped that if there are stakeholders consultation etc in developing that legislation before it reaches Parliament, we would have an opportunity to have an input there,” he emphasised.

GP Inc’s President, Myrna Nieves said all persons hired by the company will be fully-trained to ensure all aspects of the company’s operation is a success.

“We are looking to train persons from the Principles of Real Estate to the closing of the process.

They will be prepared to facilitate the process and partner with everyone involved as a team. We want to offer the people of Guyana a real estate service that is effective and efficient for all throughout Guyana,” she said.

The company, she said will also be targeting real estate investors, Guyanese ex-pats, and retirees over the world.

“We believe Guyana can be the Dubai of the Western Hemisphere and a snowbird destination,” Nieves said.

Online Stabroek Market being developed –– says President Ali

COME September, Guyana is slated to benefit from an online shopping platform called www.stabroekmarket.com, according to President Dr. Irfaan Ali. During his keynote address at the opening of the Amazonia Mall on Friday, President Ali explained that the initiative will be a localised version of the internationally recognised platform www.amazon.com.

When established, the platform will allow “every single small operator, small entrepreneur” to market their products to potential consumers in all parts of the world.

“Once that is launched, our honey, our beauty products, all the facilities we offer as a country, our indigenous people, women entrepreneurs, they will have an opportunity to join a market that gives them access to

He indicated that the project is being developed by an overseas-based Guyanese who is a notable player in the logistics business. Asked whether government has invested any funds in the initiative, Dr. Ali responded in the negative. “We have not invested a cent,” the President emphasised.

He gave the assurance that the platform is slated to modernise the local landscape, and expose Guyanese businesses and business owners to global markets that would draw even more attention to all that Guyana has to offer.

Further, the Head of State said that the mix of development and initiatives is what is necessary to take the country forward, adding that it will ensure that development is done in a way that does not expand inequality but will bridge the gap.

Over the last few years, the advancement of technology has inspired the creation of a number of online shopping platforms targeting local consumers.

The new worldwide platform will create wider reach, and will fall in line with the government’s vision to modernise all sectors of the country.

‘We lost a great man’ –– family of Corentyne man killed in accident

THE family of Mohabir Ramnarine, who died after an accident on the Nigg Public Road, believes that had he been taken to the hospital in a timely manner he may have been alive today.

Ramnarine of Number 4 Dam, Albion, East Berbice-Corentyne, succumbed at the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was taken after he was struck off his pedal cycle and left on the roadway as the driver went to the Albion

Police Station to report the accident.

The accident occurred around 11:30hrs on Thursday.

According to the police report, a motorcar bearing registration number PLL 9976 was proceeding west along the southern drive lane of Nigg Public Road at a fast rate of speed. It is alleged that the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the same direction ahead of the motorcar when the said motorcar col-

lided with the rear wheel of the pedal cycle.

As a result, the pedal cyclist hit the left side window screen and subsequently fell onto the road, causing him to receive injuries about the body. He was picked up in an unconscious state by the police and was escorted to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and later succumbed while receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the victim’s son, Raghubir Ramnarine, 36, said the news of his father’s demise is hard to believe, especially to his mother, who was totally dependent on him owing to her illness.

“My mother is completely dependent on him since she is ill. They live together and he loves taking care of her. He does everything. He was a good man, he even strong more than me; he loved his family and would sacrifice and do anything for them. This is extremely hard to believe,” Ramnarine said.

He noted that his father was returning home after paying some bills a few villages away.

“He was in his lane riding coming home, he got hit from behind, he couldn’t see

He also noted that his father was taken to hospital by public-spirited persons.

The driver of the motor car remains in custody assisting with the investigation. The body is at Ramoo’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem.

Fire station, EMS extension commissioned at the Melanie

RESIDENTS along the East Coast Demerara corridor now have access to better fire-fighting and emergency facilities, following the commissioning of a new fire station and the extension of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programme at Melanie Damishana.

East Bank Demerara residents, from Agricola to Garden of Eden, are also expected to benefit from the emergency medical and ambulance services that will

Vaccines, sports and mental health

VACCINES have long been scientifically proven to enhance the physical and mental well-being of people across the world.

They teach the body to create antibodies, and are the most effective means of preventing infectious diseases.

No less important is the fact that they are safe, having undergone rigorous safety testing before being introduced.

They are also constantly monitored for side effects, after being introduced for public use.

Despite all the obvious benefits and safeguards, there is still a fair measure of vaccine hesitancy among a significant segment of the population. In an effort to get people vaccinated in the United States of America, President Joe Biden has called on states to offer a $US100 for the newly-vaccinated, all in an effort to encourage people to take the vaccines. The United States still has a significant number of its population to be vaccinated, with less than half of its population being fully vaccinated.

Not all countries are as well endowed, financially, as the United States to provide cash incentives to its citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccines, even

though there are other forms of encouragement provided from time to time.

In Guyana, for example, fans desirous of watching the upcoming T20 cricket match between the West Indies and Pakistan at the Providence Stadium must be fully vaccinated as a pre-condition to gaining entry into the stadium, which, according to media reports, will only be allowed to accommodate about 40 per cent of its seating capacity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost every facet of life, and sporting activities have not been spared.

The Olympics Games in Tokyo have been going on for days with empty stadiums, something unprecedented in the history of the games. This must be tough not only on the organisers of the games, but on the players as well.

Spectators do add excitement and zest to the games, and provide a form of energy that can be supportive to players, and act as motivators to the respective teams.

The COVID-19 pandemic, without a doubt, has, in some ways, impacted adversely on the Tokyo Games, even though it has to be said that the spirit of the game still remains high. Isolation

and absence of family support have taken a toll on the mental health of athletes. The sudden and unexpected exit of the greatest gymnast of all time, Simone Biles, can partly be linked to that sense of isolation, due to the pandemic.

Athletes have been unable to prepare optimally, due to lockdowns and limited access to athletic facilities. This was further compounded by the postponement of the games, which added to concerns about qualification schedules, and the ability to travel internationally without contracting the virus. And to add to their burdens, there are no families and friends to cheer them up from the stands.

The exit of Simone Biles from the games has stunned the sporting world, but it does raise the issue of mental health among athletes in a deeply profound way. There are many who were high in praise for her decision to put her health above any other consideration.

According to Biles, she felt that she “had been carrying the weight of the world” on her shoulders. That burden, she said, had been exacerbated by a year of grief, loss and restrictions tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have to pro-

tect our minds and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do,” Biles told reporters.

These disclosures by a luminary in the world of sports have raised the issue of mental health to a new level among the sporting and medical communities.

She has certainly connected with people all over the world, many of whom would have shared similar experiences, and can relate to what she is saying.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga has recently issued a warning that the rate of COVID-19 infections is spreading at an unprecedented rate, and is urging people to stay indoors and watch the games. These new cases, according to the Prime Minister, are fueled by the more infectious Delta variant, with daily cases nationwide reaching over 10,000 for the first time this week.

As US President, Joe Biden recently remarked, there is “nothing political about the vaccines”.

A recent study showed that 99 per cent of the deaths have been among the unvaccinated, a trend not dissimilar to what is happening in Guyana and the rest of the world.

Saving lives is an act of worship

Dear Editor,

ONE of the most significant lessons we have learnt from this pandemic is that we are all in this fight together. Our actions, or lack thereof, have a huge influence not just on ourselves, but also on our families, communities, workplaces, and Mankind as a whole.

Despite this reality, the goal of vaccinating everyone against COVID-19 has become extremely difficult, particularly in this digital age, when we are witnessing an enormous amount of unsubstantiated health content proliferating on social media. To me, this is really concerning and problematic. While I believe it is reasonable for people to be concerned about their health, and to thoroughly research their options, I strongly advise that when listening to and reading about COVID-19 vaccines, it is critical to consider the accuracy of the content; ensure it is from a health or-

ganisation and/or government source.

What is even more disturbing is that some of this misinformation is being disseminated by individuals with a specific goal who are using people’s fears and anxieties to propagate conspiracy theories regarding COVID-19 vaccines. As a result, a growing number of individuals are refusing to receive the vaccination. It must be noted that while natural COVID-19 measures such as wearing a mask, sanitising, social distancing, proper diet and so on are all effective, vaccines against COVID-19 are our greatest hope of bringing the pandemic to an end. The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the minor risks of any possible side effects. It is the same as taking paracetamol, antibiotics, or aspirin, despite their side effects.

Subsequently, in addition to the plethora of misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines, others contend that requiring the COVID-19 vaccinations violates their

human rights. At this juncture, this writer believes that the vaccinated have the right to protect themselves against the unvaccinated.

According to one Human Rights principle enshrined in Guyana’s Constitution, Article 40 (1) states, “Every person in Guyana is entitled to the basic right to a happy, creative and productive life, free from hunger, disease, ignorance, and want. That right includes the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual, that is to say, the right, whatever his race, place of origin, political opinions, color, creed or sex, but subject to the respect for rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest.” In another Article (25), it states, “Every citizen has a duty to participate in activities designed to improve the environment and protect the health of the nation.” As a result, I believe that while individual rights should be respected, the overall well-being of the general public must take precedence.

In light of the foregoing, we, the Guyana

Islamic Forum for Education, Peace, and Religious Solidarity, the Electric Mosque’s Presentation of the Teachings of Islam, in collaboration with the Universal Peace Federation – Guyana, takes this opportunity to urge all of our brothers and sisters in Guyana and elsewhere to take the COVID-19 vaccinations. We fervently request that people who have not yet been immunized be vaccinated in order to achieve what is known as “herd immunity”. Herd immunity occurs when a significant amount of the population is vaccinated, resulting in too few people available to act as hosts, and, as a result, the virus’s transmission stops. One of the most significant aspects of herd immunity is that it protects not just those who get immunised, but also those who are not vaccinated for whatever reason.

Steps to follow if you suspect a child has been sexually abused Dear Editor, DESPITE the prevalence of sexual abuse within our society, it is still a topic that many continue to shy away from.

This reluctance to discuss sexual abuse is incredibly harmful, as it helps to maintain a lot of misinformation, stereotypes and victim blaming towards survivors. As a result, many persons who suspect or become aware of those who are being sexually abused do not know how to adequately address it. Often, this leads to them saying or doing the wrong thing. Talking openly

about abuse will not only make the topic less taboo, but will also equip more persons with accurate ways in which to respond to cases of violence, particularly if it is a child who is being sexually abused.

While girls are more likely than boys to disclose instances of sexual abuse, the reality is that many children will not come forward with their abuse if they are not asked. This partly has to do with the fact that many do not recognise what is happening to them as abuse and it is only as they grow older and become more knowledgeable do they come to

In the perspective of Almighty God, such a tiny gesture is equivalent to saving all of humanity. Just imagine!

Furthermore, we support the views of His Excellency, Dr. Irfaan Ali, the government of Guyana, President Macron, and other nations calling for the implementation of the COVID-19 “passport”. We are all in favour of vaccinating all individuals who are eligible to be vaccinated, or of requiring vaccination passports to enter any social gatherings, such as schools, places of worship, restaurants, and business entities.

Those who do not wish to cooperate may remain at home, since they cannot endanger those who do. Additionally, to safeguard the vaccinated, the unvaccinated should give a PCR test result, demonstrating that they are COVID-19-negative once every 14 days, or whenever necessary.

In Islam, taking care of one’s health is a religious duty. And, even more divine is the one whose actions save the lives of others. Watch out for children who might suddenly become withdrawn or less talkative, engage in conversations or behaviours that are “too adult” for their age, become more aggressive or who begin exhibiting regressive behaviours such as thumb sucking, bed wetting etc.

If you notice signs that

might indicate that you are judging or blaming them for what happened. Reassure them that they are not in trouble and thank them for confiding in you.

Maintaining the child’s safety is paramount, so ensure that they are in a safe and secure place. Let the child know that you will be talking to someone who can offer them more help and support and report the case to the relevant authorities such as the Child Protection Agency or the nearest police station. If a parent is not abusing the child, then consulting with the parents before making the report is recommended.

Reporting any crime, particularly child sexual violence, can be a very emotionally taxing experience.

So even as you go through the necessity of reporting, remember to care for yourself throughout the process.

Children are unable to protect themselves when being abused, so aiding in their protection through reporting can be a life-saving act.

The process to provide reliable Internet throughout Guyana has already commenced Dear Editor, I HAVE taken note of a letter in the Stabroek News on July 29, 2021 under the headline, “Without Internet accessibility, GOAL will remain an elusive dream for potential hinterland scholars”.

I wish to respond to the author, S. Fredricks, in hopes of offering some clarity, based on what I have gathered, and questions which I raised at the GOAL outreach in my area.

I do agree that there is more work to be done, especially in the hinterland regions, to provide more stable and reliable Internet access to scholars. There is no doubt that the hinterland scholars who will benefit from the GOAL initiative will face

some challenges in certain areas. However, before I go further, I would like to pose this question to the author: Should these individuals in the hinterland regions just sit around and wait for better Internet access, or should they use the little Internet that they have presently to make use of every opportunity as best as they can? In my view, despite the challenges, it would be better to utilise the GOAL opportunities now, rather than sit idly by and wait for better Internet access, so as to pursue academics.

One of the questions that I raised during the GOAL scholarship outreach in my area was how reliant the online programmes are on Internet connectivity as I am aware of the Internet issues we all face from time to

time. I was pleased to know that many of the scholarship programmes are not purely reliant on real time Internet connectivity since students will be able to complete assignments and projects using flash drives and other memory devices at their convenience. These assignments and projects will then be uploaded to their respective university’s platform or through other mediums as specified by the lecturers. With this in mind, hinterland scholars will not be at a great disadvantage per say should they face Internet issues since there will most likely be measures put in place for such cases.

Further, as far as I am aware, the Government is working on building and strengthening Internet infrastructure throughout Guyana,

specifically, the hinterland regions. The author raised some good points with regard to Internet infrastructure being costly and so forth which I agree with. In that regard, I believe that all we can do at this point is keep on lending our support to the government as they continue to embark on building and strengthening such infrastructure across the country.

The truth is that we are not at ground zero.

The process to provide reliable Internet throughout Guyana has already commenced and I believe that the next few years will bear testament to the efforts towards the same.

So far, it is only a year and the statistics has shown that the officials at the ministry have already allocated more than 5, 000 house lots.

This is a far cry from the performance of their predecessors who were in office from 2015 to 2020.

Additionally, $12B has been spent in 22 new and existing housing schemes to do infrastructural development works.

This goes in tune with the vision expressed by the President of having well rounded communities across Guyana that are developed

with roads, schemes, utilities and facilities.

As a matter of fact, some $2.3B has been expended on the hallmark Eccles to Mandela bypass road.

This road network when completed will service thousands of people and vehicles that traverse on the road daily.

The PPP Government has outdone itself in the water sector by delivering good

quality and fully sanitised water. Billions of dollars were spent on keeping the water quality at acceptable levels since the President came to office in 2020.

The impact of change, development, prosperity and leadership in just one full year can be felt all across Guyana.

Casinos, betting shops and cinemas allowed to operate –– but at 40 per cent capacity AS part of efforts to control the spread of the novel coronavirus and ensure citizens are kept safe as they return to their normal, daily activities, a number of changes to the existing COVID-19 guidelines will be instituted from Sunday.

In a move to further protect people from the spread of the virus, the guidelines state that unvaccinated people will only be allowed to access in-person services at any government agency or ministry by appointment.

Otherwise, members of the public who are vaccinated will be allowed to access the services offered by the bodies freely.

Each ministry or agency would be responsible for putting in place their arrangements to allow for compliance with the new rules.

Meanwhile, other measures such as the 22:30 hours to 04:00 hours daily curfew and the limited occupation of gyms and churches remain in effect. Air travel continues but flights to and from Brazil remain prohibited.

The Lethem crossing -the Takutu bridge -- also remains closed save and except for the crossing of essential goods and supplies on Thursdays.

The Moleson Creek crossing also remains open three days per week, as determined by the Ministry of Public Works.

Food security will be impossible without fluid, transparent international trade – say experts addressing global forum in Rome

SPEAKING at the UN Food Systems Pre-Summit in Rome, experts from various continents all agreed that international trade is key to global food security and the economic and social development of rural communities.

“The Contribution of International Agricultural Trade to Sustainable Food Systems” was the title of a panel discussion focusing on the need to do away with restrictions and distortions that inhibit the free flow of the food trade.

The presentations were part of the preparatory forum for the Food Systems Summit that is slated to take place in September at the United Nations’ Headquarters in New York.

The importance of free flowing international trade in eradicating hunger and extreme poverty was underscored by the speakers, who stressed the need to strengthen international co-operation to ensure the transparent trade of food products.

Liza Destiny full-gas compression –– 96 per cent of gas being system operational re-injected, consumed

By Richard Bhainie THE full-gas compression system aboard the Liza Destiny Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, which is operating in the Stabroek Block, offshore Guyana, is now operational, significantly reducing the excessive levels of flaring, as 96 per cent of the gas produced is being re-injected and consumed.

This is according to ExxonMobil Guyana, which disclosed on Friday that a team continues to perform maintenance and optimisation activities, with the aim of keeping the flash-gas compressor online, and minimising flaring until the arrival of the new flash-gas compressor at the end of the year.

“We are injecting, or consuming, and when I say consuming, we are using some of the gas to run our power generators offshore; we are injecting or consuming approximately 96 per cent of that gas,” Ryan said.

Just last month, ExxonMobil Guyana submitted an application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) here, seeking its approval to flare beyond pilot levels, in an effort to facilitate the continued testing of a discharge silencer, a new piece of equipment for the Liza Destiny FPSO vessel.

We’ve done detailed investigations on all of our issues that we had; real-time sharing with the teams, and I’m committed to ensuring that we apply those learns on each and every project going forward,” he said.

Duo remanded to prison after cannabis 'bust' THE Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), acting on intelligence, has arrested two men who were travelling in a motor vehicle on Thursday after they were found with a quantity of cannabis.

The men were subsequently charged.

On Friday, they appeared before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where they were both remanded to prison; the matter was adjourned to September 17, 2021.

CANU, in a press statement, said that acting on information, law enforce-

ment intercepted the men at Factory Road, Paradise, East Coast Demerara.

A search of both men, along with their bags, revealed several wrapped parcels containing cannabis, a statement from CANU noted.

The suspects gave their names as Vickey Doodnauth, 23, of Market Road, Rose Hall, Berbice, a welder by profession and Richie Sewadhan, 19, of the said address, who is also a welder.

They were arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters where the parcels were weighed; it amounted to 12.8kg and both men were subsequently charged.

42 female sex trafficking cases recorded for 2021 –– language barrier, COVID-19 pandemic hampering investigations

A TOTAL of 42 females were trafficked for sexual exploitation during the first five months of 2021, according to Sergeant Ranatha McBean of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Unit at the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

Sergeant McBean on Friday gave an overview of human trafficking here while delivering her presentation during a TIP webinar hosted by the Supreme Court of Judicature and Judicial Education InstituteGuyana (JEI.) The event coincided with World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2021, which was held under the theme, “Victims’ Voices Lead The Way”.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn; Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards; Acting Chief Justice, Roxane George; and Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, other judges, magistrates and other legal officers of the court were among those who attended the virtual seminar.

According to McBean, between January and May this year, the Force’s TIP Unit dealt with 14 reported cases involving 49 victims, which included three males. Seven of the eight victims who are under the age of 18, are Venezuelan nationals, McBean’s data revealed.

A total of 13 suspects were held by the police, resulting in 11 charges being laid. Of those charged, one conviction has been recorded thus far. Some of the cases involved sexual or labour exploitation.

One of the cases cited by McBean was the case of the State v Tito Brown, who is accused of trafficking two female Jamaican nationals, and withholding their passports. He was charged in May and was remanded to prison.

According to McBean, the most important aspect of dealing with TIP in Guyana is preventing the crime from occurring in the first instance. This, she pointed out, might be difficult, al-

though different strategies are being implemented. TIP is the third most lucrative business in the world, she said.

She later explained to the attendees that the limited educational background of victims are among the challenges officers of the Unit often encounter. “Because of Guyana’s vast geographical location, access to proper education for children of the indigenous communities is sometimes difficult, hence it is difficult for victims from these locations to provide information to investigators,” the police officer said.

As it relates to victims’ willingness to cooperate with investigators, McBean noted that they are “schooled” by their traffickers following threats.

In these circumstances, it is hard to obtain a legitimate statement from them.

“Just like how we are planning on better ways to improve, or to have more success in operation, traffickers are also planning,” McBean said, before explaining that victims, when interviewed, come up with a concocted story that they were being cared for by their boyfriends, girlfriends, or family members.

“It is really hard for us when it comes to victims participating in the interview process,” McBean said.

As it relates to the proper documentation and identification documents for victims, McBean said that most victims from Venezuela, or the indigenous communities, are usually not registered when entering Guyana, or after birth. There is also the absence of an identification, which makes it difficult to ascertain their age.

She further explained that another blindspot for the police when investigating TIP cases is the language barrier, since the Indigenous People of Guyana speak different dialects that are not being taught in the educational system.

There is also a difficulty communicating with the Spanish-speaking victims.

“It’s the duty of law enforcement officers and other relevant authorities to stand committed in this fight to combat this scourge, since there is evidence of this crime occurring in Guyana.

With this, we as law enforcement officers are tasked to bring justice to all victims of this crime,” she said.

However, McBean is hopeful that with the determination and commitment of local stakeholders, TIP in Guyana will one day be eliminated.

Minister Benn, during his feature address, highlighted that Guyana was recognised by the United States Government for fully meeting the minimum standards for the elimination of TIP. As a result, Guyana has remained on Tier 1 of the TIP index.

Guyana has also been recognised for its completion of a draft amendment of the Combating Trafficking of Persons Act, increased identification and investigation of trafficking-related matters, the launch of the first-ever bilingual anti-trafficking hotline, and

the opening of trafficking shelters outside of the capital area.

Due to economic and political crisis, large numbers of migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, and Haiti continue to cross over the border into Guyana, seeking greener pastures, which has caused a large increase in the number of trafficking victims.

Minister Benn said that as the influx of migrants continues to rise, more work needs to be done to improve the TIP response, when it comes to the societal and criminal risks involved.

He explained that one of the problems with TIP is that it is connected with other criminal activities, such as the drug trade, money laundering, smuggling of gold and other items out of the country, illegal trading of firearms and other criminal activities.

The minister noted that the government’s 2021-2023 action plan, which seeks to eliminate trafficking in persons, is being developed in

partnership with key stakeholders.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan gave an overview of the Combatting Trafficking in Persons Act 2005, including the guidelines for sentencing and related criminal offences.

The Act at reference covers the unlawful withholding of a person’s identification card, and transporting and harbouring a person for the purpose of trafficking. The senior magistrate made reference to Chapter 3, which states that under a summary conviction, a person can be sentenced to three to four years’ imprisonment, subject to forfeiture of property, and can also be ordered to pay full restitution to the victim.

However, if convicted on an indictable charge which requires a High Court trial, the person who’s been charged can be sentenced to no less than five years’ imprisonment, or to life imprisonment along with forfeiture of property, and restitution to the victim.

In the case involving a trafficked person who is under the age of 18, five years may be added to the sentence. Additionally, if the convicted person commits a sexual assault against a trafficked person, five years may be added to the sentence.

In 2019, the Chief Magistrate had sentenced a businesswoman to 15 years’ imprisonment for trafficking two Venezuelan women for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Her sentencing was handed down in accordance with the TIP Act.

Five Guyanese Indigenous women leaders helping to conserve Amazon

FIVE Indigenous women from Guyana recently joined an Amazon-wide fellowship of Indigenous women who are protecting, managing, and restoring the Amazon Forest.

Supported by the ‘Our Future Forests – Amazonia Verde’ project, the Guyanese fellows now join 19 other regional fellows, selected from 150 candidates across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Perú and Suriname. The fellowship programme seeks to foster their leadership efforts and recognise the women acting as important stewards of the Amazon.

Our Future Forests – Amazonia Verde is a Conservation International Project funded by the Government of France and working with the Co-coordinator of the Indigenous Organisations of the Amazon Basin (COICA).

According to a Conservation International release, the launch of this part of the project -- the new Women’s Fellowship Programme -- is a major aspect of Conservation International’s contribution to gender equality in the Amazon region.

The Women’s Fellowship will last 12 months and involves execution of a variety of projects that support women and nature.

The women all responded to an open call for this inaugural edition of the Fellowships Programme. They are Immaculata Casimero - a Wapichan from Aishalton Village Region Nine; Caroline Jacobs - a Makushi of Surama Village Region Nine; Esther Marslowe - a Lokono of Santa Cruz Village, Region One; Loretta Fiedtkou - a Lokono of Muritaro Village, Region 10; and Althea Harding - a Carib of Kwebana Village, Region One. Immaculata Casimero will focus on supporting the role of Wapichan women in environmental protection in the South Rupununi. She will be working with the Wapichan Women’s Movement to raise their voices in encouraging the protection of Guyana’s headwaters in the region. The project will include the conduct of education and awareness workshops on environmental sustainability, stewardship and laws.

Caroline Jacobs will be documenting and recording traditional leadership knowledge by engaging a council of elders who include Indigenous women within four communities located in different ecosystems/geographic locations, that is, savannahs, forest, wetlands and mountains. The aim of documenting the traditional knowledge is to show community members, including youth, how these core values were applied and implemented years ago thus enabling the maintenance of a healthy environment up to today.

Esther Marslowe of the Lokono people, and from Santa Cruz village, Region One will be promoting the preservation of Indigenous culture and working on youth empowerment, especially for other Indigenous women.

Loretta Fiedtkou will be highlighting the importance of replanting an area in the community with Crabwood trees, Hubadi trees and other endangered trees and remind people about the benefits of the old ways of farming and caring for land.

In the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, fellows have established communication virtually to advance the program despite limited physical contact.

The programme is committed to online connectivity and other tools necessary for collaboration in this reality. All the women participating in the fellowship will be provided with networking and knowledge sharing opportunities.

The broader project, Our Future Forests–Amazonia Verde is working with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) to help conserve up to 12 per cent of the Amazon — about 73 million hectares (180 million acres) — by 2025. The project directly contributes to the objectives of the Alliance for the Conservation of Rainforests, an open coalition led by France to promote the protection, restoration and sustainable management of rainforests worldwide.

HEADMISTRESS of Tain Primary School, Sharon Durant has praised the government for its timely reintroduction of the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant programme to support childhood education.

The headmistress made this statement when Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag launched the distribution exercise in several schools along the Corentyne on Thursday.

Durant said the money will assist many parents, even as she urged them to spend it wisely, and to invest in their children’s education.

“This cash grant will come in handy for students

in our community; I say this because many of the parents in our community work on the sugar estates, and now is the out-of-crop season, so it will be beneficial to them,” Ms. Durant said.

“Also, we have many pupils who are left in the care of grandparents; we also have many single parents in our school community, so, I’m happy that you will be receiving this cash grant, and I’m hoping that you will spend it wisely,” she added.

Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), several parents expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative.

Jessie Gray, a pensioner, said she has been the primary caregiver of her granddaughter over the last eight years, and she sometimes found it difficult.

“I grow my grand daughter since she was three months old; she is brilliant in school, and there will come a time when money will be needed, and my pension will only help up to a certain way…. I am very, very happy; I cannot express how broad and wide I can smile,” Ms. Gray said, and that she will be using the money to purchase supplies to prepare her granddaughter for the new school term.

tion of the government’s commitment to the nation’s children.

“We understand that not only parents are in need, and this is a necessity for their children to be able to go to school, but also because education has always been a priority,” Minister Parag said. “The nation’s children have forever been a priority and of utmost importance to this Government,” she added.

Minister Parag urged the public to disregard the naysayers, and to focus on providing better opportunities for their children through education.

The reintroduction of the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant to public school children is another Mani-

festo promise that has been fulfilled by the PPP/C government.

The grant was first introduced in 2014, and was valued at $10,000. However, it was discontinued by the APNU+AFC administration.

Since the PPP/C Government returned to office in August 2020, it has increased the school uniform and supplies voucher from $2,000 to $4,000 per child, which is being distributed in cash this year. Each child registered in the public school system will receive $19,000 in toto.

Approximately 172,000 learners will benefit from the $3.2 billion programme countrywide.

He explained that while the efforts of the government are much appreciated, the non-governmental organisations across Guyana such as the CIOG must also be applauded for their efforts during the recent flooding by providing the necessary support and supplies to residents who were severely affected by the floodwaters.

They have been contributing to government’s response efforts toward the flood-affected residents by providing thousands of hampers, medical kits, bottles of drinking water, and mattresses to the flood-affected residents.

“Today, I’m very pleased that they’re making a further contribution in a very tan-

Sheikh Moen ul-Hack said the CIOG intends to continue working closely with the government and the regional representatives of the government throughout the country to help the people.

“This is the teaching of Islam, Hinduism and Christianity, as long as we can render kindness, we must do so and if we are kind to the creation, the creator will be kind to us, if we bring relief and ease to the people, then the creator will grant us ease and relief,” he said.

Meanwhile, an assessment was completed by officials from the Caribbean, the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority, and NAREI, which will be submitted to the government, which will decide on the level of support that will be provided to those affected by the recent flooding.

Novak’s Olympic dream ended by Ethiopia’s Barega (BBC) - Novak Djokovic’s bid for Olympic gold ended and Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega was a surprise champion in the 10 000m, as the Tokyo Olympics continued to throw up shocks on day seven.

World number one Djokovic had been aiming to complete a ‘Golden Slam’ but lost to Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who told the Serb “you can’t win everything”.

Another of the pre-Games favourites, Simone Biles, threw further doubt over whether she will compete in the rest of her gymnastics finals, as an Olympics, being held in the most unusual of circumstances, carried on its theme of uncertainty.

Already being held in a country where many people were reluctant to host the Games during a global pandemic, the local mood was further dampened by a surge in COVID-19 cases that prompted an extension of the state of emergency in Tokyo.

And in the swimming pool, the mood was darkened by questions over whether Russians should even be at the Olympics given their country’s doping scandals.

There were worrying scenes at the BMX finals, with American favourite Connor Fields rushed to hospital after a heavy crash in the third run of his semi-final, but he is awake and awaiting checks to determine the extent of his injuries.

But there were joyous scenes on the first day of the athletics, where some of the biggest global names shone in their Heats before Barega clinched the only track gold of the day with an electrifying surge on the final lap’s back straight to upset world record holder Joshua Cheptegei in the 10 000m.

RUSSIAN ATHLETES FACE BACKLASH FROM RIVALS More than 300 athletes across 30 sports are in Tokyo competing, as the Russian Olympic Committee, rather than as their country as part of sanctions for doping scandals.

They are fourth in the medal table but their success has not sat well with some of their fellow competitors who believe they should not be at the Games because of the country’s doping record.

American swimmer Ryan Murphy said yesterday’s 200m backstroke final was “probably not clean” after he lost his Olympic title to Russian Evgeny Rylov.

While Murphy later rowed back on his comments, saying he was speaking about doping generally, Rylov said the American was entitled to his thoughts given Russia’s doping past.

British swimmer Luke Greenbank, who won bronze in that race, added: “Obviously, there’s a lot of media around the Russian federation coming into the Olympics.

Bottas leads Hungary second practice

(BBC) - Valtteri Bottas led Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in second practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Bottas was 0.027 seconds quicker than Hamilton, with Verstappen 0.298 seconds slower than the Finn.

Verstappen was struggling with the balance of his car, complaining initially of lack of front grip and then too much.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon was fourth, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

It was a session perhaps even more inconclusive than normal in Friday practice as Verstappen, leading the championship by eight points, lagged behind the Mercedes.

He was off the pace of his rivals on both a single flying lap and on a long run when doing race preparation later in the session.

Verstappen complained over the radio after his single flying lap that the car was “so understeer-y it’s incredible”, only to go out for his race simulation run and say that “all the time I try to turn I’m losing the rear”.

He came in for an adjustment to his front wing but continued to lag behind the Mercedes for pace on the long run.

Mercedes, by contrast, had an apparently smooth day, topping both sessions and looking quick on both short and long runs.

The news underlines the reasons behind England’s controversial rest and rotation policy over the last year, which has seen multi-format players left out of several squads in order to give them periods of time away from the game and with their families to help them cope with a relentless schedule.

England’s all-format players are due to fly to Bangladesh and then Pakistan for white-ball series days after the fifth Test against India in September.

They will then travel to the UAE for the T20 World Cup and Australia, for the Ashes, where COVID-19 restrictions are among the toughest in the world.

Players have held talks with the ECB this week to discuss that tour, and reports have suggested that some will consider withdrawing from the series if they are unable to travel with their families.

Major partnerships help GGA donate millions for school golf programme … Director of Sport backs association THE Guyana Golf Association (GGA) made incredible strides yesterday as Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle threw his support behind the association and its upcoming plans.

The body yesterday handed over equipment and balls to Region 3’s Regional Education Officer Mr Devendra Persaud, Regional Executive Officer Mr Jainarine Somwar and Regional Vice-Chairman Mr Omesh Satayannand as well as several teachers at the Vreed-en-Hoop headquarters.

REO Persaud said, “This is the beginning of major development in education especially since the focus is on Physical Education and Golf is among the few fully COVID-19 compliant sports. We will put every effort behind this programme and we intend to make Region 3 a dominant leader,” Later that afternoon, the handover continued at the Woolford Avenue ground with Sport Director Ninvalle in attendance as equipment worth millions of dollars was designated for the youth and school programmes in Guyana.

Ninvalle expressed his delight at the rapid growth.

He said “It is the mission of the sports commission to provide all athletes and citizens with access to every sport and golf has shown itself to be of great interest to many.

We are delighted to see the progress and will monitor its growth with enthusiasm.”

In January 2021, the Ministry of Education Allied Arts Unit and Department of Secondary Schools, guided by Education Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Alfred King, Ms Barker-King and Ms Gonsalves, partnered with the Guyana Golf Association and NexGen Golf Academy to develop a syllabus for teaching golf to students as a PE sports elective at CXC/CAPE. The success of the pilot programme, led an effort to locate sufficient equipment to grow the game and president of the GGA, Aleem Hussain, reached out to a variety of companies and organisations.

Hussain, along with vice-president of GOA, Godfrey Munroe, William and Aleena Knight (the Shafura Hussain Foundation in New York), started a chain of events that ended with fruitful results.

Quick response was received from Danny Ramnarain of DANCO Electrical, Anwar Buddy Shaffie, Sally Jack and several overseas-based Guyanese golfers.

The GGA, in addition to purchasing equipment and thousands of balls, received equipment donations from Anthony Gudiece, Captain Pete and Staff (Baiting Hollow Country Club), Steve Lieberman, Glenn Sable, Ken Lysek, and Mike DeLuca (Colonial Springs Country Club), Augie Abbatiello (Indian Hills Country Club), Jabbar Mowaigsh (Vineyard Valley Golf Course), Bob Maibusch (Pine Grove Springs), Guy Allen and Louie Chirco for the budding golf initiative. Transportation was provided by Zubie Hussein of Z & B Trucking.

These shipping giants combined to donate over $1M to the golf programme and have pledged their ongoing support.

CS Worldwide Shipping & Logistics recently donated tens of thousands of face shields to Guyana and is also partnering with the Guyana Golf Association to distribute hand sanitisers and clothing (provided by Danny Ramnarain and Al Badrudeen) as the company gets ready to open local operations in Guyana.

Mr Chandi Singh said “Our organisation has been active in charitable activities around the world but were looking for a reliable partner in Guyana. Mr Hussain has shown great results and we are happy to support him and the GGA.” Hussain praised the efforts of Pascargo, one of the largest logistics companies in the country. saying, “The company lived up to its motto ‘We Save You all the Trouble’ and went above and beyond providing great service. They ensured delivery and were responsive throughout the process. We wish to thank the Ramdeo family, especially Syd, Ian, Chandra, and Stacia for their contributions and commitment to growing the sport in Guyana.”

Persaud sets National 50m freestyle record … Abrams fails to advance in Women’s 100m

IT was a day of mixed emotions for the two Guyanese athletes on show yesterday in Tokyo, where the games of the 32nd Olympiad are being held.

Jasmine Abrams finished seventh in her Heat yesterday morning in the Women’s 100m and missed out on making the Tokyo Olympic Games semi-final.

Abrams clocked 11.49s in Heat Seven of Round One to finish behind

Trinidad’s Michelle-Lee Ahye who won the race in 11.06s, followed by medal contender Shericka Jackson of Jamaica with 11.07s and Jenna Prandini of the USA with 11.11s.

The top three in each of the seven Heats and the next three fastest have advanced to the semi-finals.

Abrams had an entry time of 11.19s, and had qualified for the Games through her world ranking.

Her sister, Aliyah, is also competing at the Games in the Women’s 400m.

SWIMMING Meanwhile, 15-year-old Aleka Persaud had a personal-best swim, to finish second in the Women’s 50m freestyle race, which also turned out to be a new National record for Guyana.

Persaud, who turned 15 in February, had a previous best of 28.10 seconds, but clocked 27.76 seconds in Heat Four yesterday.

Only the 16 fastest advanced, meaning, that Persaud saw her time in Tokyo coming to an end.

However, it was a sensational performance from Persaud, whose time is the fastest in our country’s history in the Women’s 50m freestyle.

Barbados Franchise rebrands to Barbados Royals THE Barbados Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise will change its name following a deal that sees the Royals Sports Group (EM Sporting Holdings Ltd), the owners of the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise acquire a majority stake in the team.

The two-time CPL champions will be rebranded as the Barbados Royals, a partner franchise of the Rajasthan Roy-

als, as the Royals Sports Group seeks to expand its global presence.

The Barbados Royals were Hero CPL champions in 2014 and 2019 and are currently led by West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder.

The team will get their 2021 campaign underway against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on August 26 at Warner Park, Basseterre.

Manish Patel, principal of the Barbados franchise, added, “We are extremely excited about the partnership with Manoj and the Rajasthan Royals family, which will further advance cricket in Barbados and the region.”

West Indies, Pakistan to clash today at Providence A COVID-19 case got one T20I between West Indies and Pakistan cancelled, while Bajan weather took care of the other.

That means what was set to be a luxuriant, slowburn five-match series has instead turned into a snappy best of three, with little room for either side to put a foot wrong.

The players spent the two days in-between shuttling from Barbados to Guyana, with Guyana National Stadium hosting all three matches.

The nine overs that were managed on Wednesday might have appeared pointless on the scorecard, but both sides would have learnt plenty from them.

For Pakistan, it’s a shot in the arm for a bowling unit that head coach Misbah-ul-Haq admitted was below par in the recently concluded England series.

The entire innings was a test of the visitors’ newball skills as well as deathovers ability, and on both counts there will be little cause for complaint.

Hasan Ali’s return makes the bowling unit significantly more potent, while Mohammad Wasim, making his debut in difficult circumstances, made Chris Gayle his first T20I scalp. Mohammad Hafeez, Shadab Khan and Usman Qadir only bowled an over each, but kept the runs down and picked up a couple of wickets among them for good measure.

Babar Azam’s men might be well served not to get too smug about that performance, though, with West Indies sure to shrug it off as an occasional blip.

The panoply of potential power-hitting in the home side means there will be days when oppositions are blown out of the water through no fault of their own, and that means West Indies play each T20I on their own terms.

If only two or three of Evin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran find their range, Pakistan could see games taken out of their hands entirely.

With the bowling having

There is, of course, an element of experimentation woven into the fabric of this series, with each side looking to stitch together a combination that gives them the best chance at the T20 World Cup. Some might argue that makes the results less important than the process, but little could be more useful for Pakistan than heading into that competition with an away series win against the defending champions.

Similarly, West Indies got back on track with a thumping series win over Australia, and will want to put as much psychological distance as possible between this side and a series

defeat at South Africa’s hands earlier this month.

Besides, with Pakistan having proven their bogey

side over the years, a first T20I series win over them should do West Indies confidence little harm.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Kieron Pollard - and the weather rescued West Indies in the first T20I, which was reduced to nine overs due to persistent rain. Theoretically, that should have been ideal for the home side’s power-hitters, except nearly all of them found themselves on a leash against an impressive performance by Hasan and the rest of Pakistan’s bowlers.

Despite the nature of the game, no other batsman managed a strike rate north of 130, and Pollard - whose nine-ball 22 took his side to a respectable 85 - will be aware of the increased responsibility on his shoulders to ensure his side don’t find themselves in the same predicament.

How Pakistan try to stifle the one batsman who had the better of them should be enthralling viewing in a full-length T20I. Sharjeel Khan began the PSL this year like a house on fire, leading to his call-up to the national side for Pakistan’s tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe. In the matches that have followed, though, he hasn’t had things his own way, and found himself pipped by Fakhar Zaman for a top-order position.

Part of the reason lies

in a drop-off in the lefthander’s personal form; he managed just 26 at less than a run-a-ball in the two T20Is he played since, and crossed 30 just once in the second leg of the PSL. His strike rate, too, has slipped under 119 in this time against a career strike rate of 139.

But with Pakistan looking for enough firepower to match the big-hitting West Indies, he was scheduled to open the batting in the first game. With time running out to book a T20 World Cup spot, he needs to summon up the form that got him here in the first place.

TEAM NEWS It’d be unlikely for West Indies to change too much just yet. Lendl Simmons might sit out, if he hasn’t shaken off the blow to the neck that forced him to retire hurt, which would bring Andre Fletcher back into the mix.
