THE Ministry of Housing and Water has started developing 5,000 new house lots in communities along the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) corridor, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Sherwyn Greaves.

Those lands, which will soon be available for allocation, are in Little Diamond, Great Diamond and Prospect.

Greaves’ comment followed a recent announcement by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, that 5,000 new house lots will be available along the EBD. Minister Croal, who was at the time addressing persons gathered for the commissioning of the $2.3 billion Mandela-Eccles Four-Lane Highway, said: “The acquisition of new lands and the execution of critical infrastructural projects will pave the way for the allocation of a minimum of 5,000 new house lots in 2022 on the East Bank corridor.”

This is in addition to the spinoff benefits of the new four-lane highway, which, according to Greaves will be used for government offices and commercial purposes.

the government intends to expend close to $28 billion in 2022 for infrastructural works in a number of housing schemes along the EBD. Some of those works will be done in Golden Grove, Little Diamond and Great Diamond.

According to Minister Croal, the in-

tended expenditure will also cover the construction of the new Eccles to Great Diamond four-lane highway.

On a broader level, Minister Croal had told the Guyana Chronicle that for 2021, more than $14 billion was being spent to develop some 22 housing schemes across the country.

The initial infrastructural works included the construction, and, in some cases, the rehabilitation of roads, bridges and drainage infrastructure, as well as the installation of facilities to accommodate utility services such as water and electricity.

This was done to ensure that all new and upcoming housing schemes are accessible and outfitted with the requisite amenities for new land owners to commence construction of their homes.

It was noted that over the past couple of years, although house lots were distributed, lack of preparatory works prevented new landowners from moving forward with construction of their homes, largely owing to the inaccessibility of many of the schemes.

Access to adequate housing has long been viewed as a basic human right, and is considered an integral factor for the enjoyment of other economic, social and cultural rights.

And, with Guyana’s economy poised to quadruple in the coming years, the government has started establishing the conditions for Guyanese, especially from the low and middle-income brackets, to have access to adequate housing.

ICT master plan to transform education, security sectors –– President Ali says PRESIDENT, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has said that the government is working on a major Information and Communication (ICT) master plan which will significantly boost the efficiency and productivity of the education and security sectors in Guyana.

The Head of State made this announcement on Wednesday, during the first meeting of Guyana’s Information and Communication (ICT) Master Plan 2030 “Discovery kick-off,” at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

“We are bringing the entire ICT platform on one common agenda where all the stakeholders will be part of a singular platform to enhance efficiency, to improve productivity,” President Ali said.

The Head of State added that one of the main aspects of the ICT strategy and master plan will be its integration into the school sys-

tem. He noted that this will allow students in primary schools to start basic training in coding, which would be built upon throughout their secondary school life.

It is the government’s aim that children in the local education system be exposed to training in software development before leaving high school.

“So, ICT will be integrated into the lifecycle of the new generation of children in our country,” Dr. Ali said.

The President added that persons who are not part of that generation will have to “come up to speed” with the infrastructure that will be in place to change the way things are operated.

“The new generation that will come, will be coming up in this ICT framework in which their knowledge and their skillset are far different from what we were accustomed to because they will be trained to operate and work in new environments, in a new Guyana, where ICT will be a catalyst in transforming

Already, in keeping with its vision to modernise the education sector, the Ministry of Education has commissioned several new smart classrooms.

The smart classrooms are equipped with items such as an interactive board, a television that allows teachers and students to connect remotely, and motion and voice-activated cameras complete with a face recognition feature. The interactive board will allow students to be able to interact virtually with the class

that is being facilitated at the time and view all the content that is being shared.

The equipment does not include desktop computers, one of the main differences between the smart classrooms and regular Information Technology (IT) laboratories that many schools already have.

President to meet Opposition Leader on constitutional appointments

PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali said he will extend an invitation to Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton to meet him for talks on constitutional appointments.

The meeting is expected to be held within the next two weeks.

The President made this announcement while speaking to reporters following the launch of the International Building Expo at the Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday evening. He said the Opposition Leader will receive a Letter of Invitation for the meeting soon.

Rose Hall woman severely injured during alleged robbery AN elderly woman is reportedly in critical condition after she was injured by a suspected bandit during an alleged robbery at her house at Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice, on Thursday.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that Jamool Mookshah’s throat was slashed by a suspect who purportedly gained entry into the victim’s backyard by scaling the back fence.

One of Mookshah’s neighbours, who would check on her from time to time, purportedly found the woman in a pool of blood and alerted other residents.

The injured woman was then rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she is listed as critical.

Up to press time, officers of the Guyana Police Force were conducting investigations at the scene of the crime.

Attorney Rahamat is new GNBA Chairperson

PROMINENT attorney at law Latchmie Rahamat has been appointed Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA).

Rahamat will lead a team of new directors who were appointed by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, pursuant to the Broadcast Act No. 17 of 2011.

Other members of the board of directors who were appointed by the President are communication and public policy specialist, Carlton James; attorney at law, Sadie Amin; broadcaster and radio frequency communication engineer, Robert Mohamed; digital communications specialist, Jason Abdulla and information technology specialist, Darryl Akeung.

Queen’s College on February 10, 2021, became the second smart classroom to be launched in a public school. The first was commissioned at the North Ruimveldt Secondary in 2014.

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, had said that the government’s intention is to eventually establish smart classrooms in every high school across the country. This,

she believes, will allow schools to access teachers from other schools if they don’t have a teacher for a specific subject.

The facilities will have a multiplier effect as they will allow for expert teachers to reach and engage with students from other schools and vice versa.

She said that in cases where some schools do not have a specialist teacher in a particular subject area, a teacher from the Leonora Secondary School could assist those students by conducting lessons virtually without having to travel to the other school.

The Education Ministry highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant gaps in online and virtual learning and has underscored the importance of the integration of technology into the education sector.

SECURITY AND TECHNOLOGY

Education is not the only area that would benefit from technological advancements, as President Ali had said that the new master plan also caters for the enhancement of security The master plan and improved infrastructure will help in project implementation, monitoring and evaluation, addressing cybercrime, healthcare management, education delivery, and others. The President said it will also help to identify weaknesses in the system.

“It is also a tool that will help us to hold people more accountable to the performing of the functions and the way in which they work,” President Ali said.

Recently, the Head of State disclosed plans for “smart policing” systems, which would allow the strategic implementation of technology in the dayto-day operations of the GPF, in a bid to improve the accessibility and effi-

ciency of the force.

He noted that with Guyana on a fast-growth trajectory, systems must be put in place to ensure the safety of Guyanese, visitors, and persons interested in investing in Guyana.

“Aggregate investments, both private and public, are increasing; citizens are investing in new homes, cars, and other personal belongings; businesses are expanding; those making these investments are doing so with the understanding that the country will boost security to protect them and their investments,” President Ali said.

One of the major undertakings of the smart policing system is the implementation of a digital platform for ticketing, directly related to breach of road laws.

The President said that the government has already started discussions with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and

intends to have this feature incorporated on all of Guyana’s major highways.

This system will incorporate fixed-speed radars on main roads, so as to identify those who use the roads recklessly and to photograph these infractions.

ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL Dr. Ali said that although this will be a costly investment, it is essential to stem the road carnage.

“On all our new highways we are going to incorporate this feature where we can move towards digital ticketing and recognition in terms of speeding, in terms of seatbelt violations, and so on; and that system must

be automatically linked to the suspension of licence and so on,” President Ali said.

In keeping with the digitalisation of the force, the Head of State also said that the government plans to pilot digital reporting booths, a system that will allow citizens to document and lodge police reports at police stations. He noted that these systems will be set up at strategic spots to allow people ease of access.

President Ali believes that this could significantly boost the force’s information-gathering system since any potential anxiety or fear of directly making a report face to face with a rank of the GPF will be eliminated.

A Catalyst for Change

AS the modernisation process in Guyana picks up momentum, the need to have the right skills-set to advance the process becomes all the more necessary.

This fact was emphasised by President, Dr Irfaan Ali very early in the life of the new PPP/C Administration.

At the swearing-in ceremony of the new PPP/C Cabinet on August 2020, President Ali spoke of the importance of having the requisite skills-set in order to effectively respond to the challenges of national development.

Governance is no easy task. It requires lots of energy and strategic thinking. Information has to be managed, processed and transmitted to facilitate policy-making and implementation.

The government has been doing an excellent job in terms of realigning the functions of government to remove duplicity and bottlenecks. which now makes it much easier to conduct business with government and to enhance efficiency levels.

At the end of the day it is results that matter and the ability to deliver

the goods and services in the most cost-effective manner.

Citizens have a role to play in this regard. The technology is already available to make it easier to do business between the government and the broader citizenry and, as pointed out by President Ali, the government is now in the process of developing an ICT Master Plan which would ensure that all sectors and stakeholders enhance their efficiency and productivity.

In his feature address at the first meeting of Guyana’s Information and Communication (ICT) Master Plan 2030, the President said that the idea behind the plan is “to bring the entire platform on one common agenda where all the stakeholders will be part of a singular platform to enhance efficiency, to improve productivity.”

In this regard, all sectors would be integrally involved. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated what the creative use of technology can do to keep the wheels of government turning, even in some of the most challenging situations. This was especially so

in the delivery of education services through the use of a variety of social media platforms. It is amazing how teachers, parents and children were able to adapt to the ICT environment, even though there were many who hitherto had little or no familiarity with the technology.

The world is evolving in the direction of electronic governance.

The government must be commended for putting in place the necessary policy measures to take advantage of this new technological dispensation. And as President Ali correctly observed, this would require the transformation of the current ICT strategy. One important aspect of that strategy, he said, is the integration of that platform into the school system. This will allow students at the primary level to start basic training in coding and as they progress to secondary school they will be exposed to training in software development.

The fact is the information and communication technologies are diffusing at a rapid pace; the digital gap is closing. There is no reason why any country has to remain third world as far as the ICT technology

is concerned.

The work environment has changed and with it the need to change our attitudes and approach to work and in doing business. As the President said, persons who are not of that generation will have to come to speed with the infrastructure that will be in place to govern the way business is done. “The new generation that will come, will be coming up in this ICT framework in which their knowledge and their skill-sets are different from what we were accustomed to because they will be trained to operate and work in [a] new environment, in a new Guyana in which ICT will play a catalyst for transforming the country.”

The new ICT platform will certainly help to change the culture of work in Guyana and, by so doing, help to raise efficiency and productivity levels.

This will help to enhance our overall competitiveness, especially at this time when the country is experiencing unprecedented levels of economic growth and development.

Moving on doesn’t mean you have lost

Dear Editor,

I am tired. I am fed up. When will it ever end? How many more?

Why can’t someone understand that if you can’t agree, you should go your separate ways. You don’t own her; you don’t own him. The worst is how some persons justify abuse, justify the killings, how can you know that abuse is happening and do absolutely nothing.

Two women, in a matter of days, two women were murdered and a child hospitalised because of domestic violence.

The sufferings of these women didn’t start the day of their demise. I can’t even begin to understand what Savitri’s

life was like, how many days and nights she cried, her pain and suffering, her sadness. It breaks my heart just thinking about all she probably went through in those 33 years of marriage, how many times her human rights were violated.

Shenese Walks was just 19-year-old, she was young ambitious woman and mother and just like that because of a disagreement he killed her.

Two young people, unbelievable. I am thinking here, where we as parents went wrong in raising our boys and girls in resolving conflict in a non-violent way.

How can we forget the five-year-old, who has witnessed the abuse, who has

been abused and who is now fighting for her life? Just thinking about the trauma she has experienced at just five years old. Children are resilient but come on, she should not have to experience this.

Men and women who abuse others are cowards who could only use violence to gain power.

As parents, we really need to empower our children and get them to understand that moving on doesn’t mean you have lost. We need to empower young women and men to challenge and break through prevailing norms that underpin violence in this country. We can’t be tired, we can’t give up, we have

to keep empowering, we have to keep supporting victims, we have to keep helping them to seek help. We have to keep pushing and we have to help if we hear something.

There are so many ways we can help, call the 914 hotlines, call 911, call a police station and make a report, call a neighbour, there is always strength in numbers. We have to do more.

Rest in peace Savitri Raj and Shenese Walks.

The sugar tax levy saved other sectors of the economy

Dear Editor,

OVER the past decade the criticism of the sugar industry has been incessant.

The crucial role of the sugar tax levy (contributing over GY$100 billion to other sectors during 1974 to 2000) has often been ignored in these discussions.

Notwithstanding, criticisms have become more pronounced after the European Union (EU) withdrew its preferential treatment in 2009 that immediately reduced sugar price by 34 per cent. That drastic price reduction exposed weaknesses in the sugar industry, such as higher production costs compared with open market prices. And past corruption coupled with a top-heavy management structure with extra-generous compensation packages, continue to weaken the financial viability of the sugar industry.

With the PNCR-led Coalition’s rationale that the closure of four sugar estates in 2016-2017 would allow for consolidation, re-engineering and better performance, the three surviving sugar estates (Blairmont, Albion, and Uitvlugt) have fallen short of this expectation, at least for the first six years.

It would be a huge challenge, though not necessarily insurmountable, for GuySuCo to turn around this industry within the next two years. An encouraging signal is the movement away from bulk sugar to packaged sugar which doubles GuySuCo’s earnings from sales (US$300 per MT vs. US$670 per MT).

It is hoped that GuySuCo will build upon this piece of success, despite some production setbacks.

Sugar output in 2019 was 107,203 metric tonnes (MTs); in 2020 production declined to 87,875MTs (18 per cent); and it plummeted to 58,025MTs in 2021 (34 per cent). With 22,000 MTs set aside for local consumption, this means that only 44,000 MTs will be available for the external markets.

Cost of production of sugar is a nagging problem. It is reported that cost of sugar is twice the world market price (production cost of US$ 0.33 per lb. vs open market cost of US$ 0.16 per lb.).

When one considers that GuySuCo has incurred a debt of $(G) 72+ billion and had to be subsidised from 2010 to 2020 by $(US) 76.965 billion at an average of $(G) 7.6965 billion per annum, the PPP/C Government had to address this matter with urgency.

While the statistics cited here do not paint a rosy picture, the PPP/C Government contends that the sugar industry

might not be financially sound at this time, but this does not necessarily mean that sugar is not economically viable.

Sugar is a community-based industry, like bauxite, it is woven into workers’ history and culture. Sugar has been so dominant in the economy that the history of Guyana up to 1980 could be regarded as a history of sugar. Estates have been providing sugar workers’ livelihood, a sense of self-worth, as well as helped to shape their perspective on life.

A transition from sugar to any other product must therefore not only be gradual but also sensitive. While the PPP/C had promised to re-open three (Enmore, Skeldon, Rosehall) of the four closed sugar estates, a meticulous survey that they conducted upon taking office, revealed that the factories, the dams, the trenches, and the abandoned cane fields at Enmore and Skeldon could not be economically and logistically rehabilitated. When this is combined with GuySuCo’s heavy debt, as well as, its huge annual subsidy, the government felt that they must address this problem in a way that will not hurt workers and their communities. They therefore changed their strategy for Enmore and Skeldon.

Enmore would be re-opened but not necessarily around sugar, and so is Skeldon. Dismissed workers at Skeldon are given part-time jobs, while the government seeks to divest the sugar estate.

Acqua-culture (rearing of shrimps), peasant cane farming and other crops will be encouraged like the cultivation of industrial hemp. At Enmore, the packaging plant is scheduled to be relocated at Albion, and workers there have been absorbed at GK+B Industries’ US$35 million fabrication facility.

Approval was also given to Rudisa to set up an agro-processing factory at Enmore. President, Dr Irfaan Ali says that Enmore will become an industrial hub for the East Coast region.

Rosehall is scheduled to re-open with sugar production its main goal in early 2023. Wales is slated to become another industrial centre. The US$900 million gas-to-energy project for the Wales Development Zone includes the construction of a plant to convert gas into electricity (300 megawatts). There has been a suggestion that Uitvlugt Sugar Estate might be converted into ethanol production but there is no confirmation on this. The factory has not been grinding due to mechanical problems for several weeks. Workers there are being provided with alternative jobs

during this down time.

Sugar is going through a bad patch but with the right vision and commitment it will survive and continue to make major contributions to the country as well as to sustaining vibrant sugar estates and adjacent communities that are interlocked with spinoff industries such as travel, businesses, insurance,

mortgages, etc. The role of sugar in the agriculture diversification process must not be diminished; it still has the potential for financial and economic viability.

Sugar should not be allowed to become a casualty of the Dutch disease.

Fire Service denies claim Kwakwani fire truck arrived without water

–– 12 reported homeless following blaze WITH 12 persons now homeless after a fire destroyed a workers’ living quarters in Kwakwani, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), the Guyana Fire Service is denying claims that its fire truck arrived at the scene without water.

In a release, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said it received the emergency call that a building was on fire at 12:11 hours on Wednesday last.

The fire department said Water Tender 69, from the Region 10 Regional Demo-

cratic Council (RDC) located close to Kwakwani, was immediately dispatched to the location.

According to the fire department’s statement, the structure involved was a flat wooden building that was owned by Inshally Bacchus, and was reportedly used as a workers’ living quarters.

As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed, leaving twelve persons homeless. There were no reported casualties or injuries resulting from the fire, the fire department confirmed.

POLICE, on Wednesday, reportedly discovered and destroyed some $45 million worth of marijuana, following an eradication exercise at two locations along the Berbice River.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Regional Division Six officers, between 04:00 hrs and 15:30 hrs, conducted a drug erad-

ication exercise at separate locations along the Berbice River.

The police said two plots of land, used for cannabis farms, were discovered along the said river during the first part of the exercise.

The farms measured approximately one acre each, the law enforcement agency noted.

$45M in narcotics destroyed during police exercise in Berbice River

One of the cannabis farms reportedly destroyed by police along the Berbice River 10,000 plants in total were cultivated on the two farms, with the cannabis plants measuring between one to

five feet in height. Police believe the plants weighed 250lbs.

Police also said the estimated value of the eradicated cannabis, at the two plots, was approximately $7.5 million.

Both plots were reportedly destroyed by fire.

The police statement said that, as its officers continued their journey up the Berbice River, another cannabis farm was discovered at Gateroy Village.

The farm, according to the statement, was about six acres with approximate-

ly 50,000 plants, ranging between one to six feet in height with a weight of about 1,250 pounds. Two make-shift camps were also discovered. The cannabis and camps were destroyed by fire, police confirmed.

The estimated value of the eradicated cannabis at Gateroy Village farm was $37.5 million.

The total weight of all the cannabis eradicated at both locations during the exercise was approximately 1,500 pounds with an estimated value of $45 million, police said.

HISTORIC ECONOMIC CONTEXT Since achieving independence from Great Britain in 1966, Guyana’s economic performance has been inconsistent. THE POLITICAL ECONOMY Prior to 1992, Guyana was a centrally command, socialist type dictatorial regime, an economic system that plunged Guyana into bankruptcy, thus leading to economic and social hardships. During this era, thousands of Guyanese fled the country in search of better opportunities elsewhere. This, by and large, explains the massive human capital deficit the country has currently where less than five per cent of the local labour force possess a tertiary level education.

Post 1992 when there was a regime change (the current government having been elected through a free and fair elections), and restoration of democracy, the economy at the time had just begun its transition to a free market economy, inter alia, the IMF economic reform programme.

From 1992 – 2014, Guyana suffered many periods, short and long in some cases, of political instability which largely stymied the country’s development and ability to achieve its true economic potential.

PERIODS OF POLITICAL INSTABILITY * 1992 – 1997: there was a short period of street protests and violence after democracy was restored, following which the economy took off (short period of stability). * 1997 – 2001: prolonged street protests and disruption. * 2002 – 2003: prison break, crime wave spiralled out of control and politicallymotivated disruptions * 2004 – 2008: unrests, politicallymotivated disruptions * 2008 –2012: Lusignan, Lindo Creek, Bartica massacre, violence erupted when protesters blocked the Wismar Mckenzie bridge. * *2011 – 2014: For the first time, a new political dispensation emerged following the 2011 elections where the government was a minority government and the political opposition controlled the National Assembly having had a one-seat majority. Under this dispensation, it was difficult for the government to obtain budget approvals; many major development projects were disapproved by the Opposition- controlled National Assembly. As a result, snap elections were held in 2015 which resulted in a win for the Opposition. * *2015 – 2020: Though this period was relatively stable – that is, no violence, crime wave, unrest and disruption, the administration failed to implement any major

development projects despite expending over $1.2 trillion in five years. Much of this was expended on current / consumption or non-productive expenditure.

Out of 29 years (1992-2021) since Guyana transitioned to a free market economy, there were several periods of political instability that hindered the country’s development, coming out of a bankrupt State.

Thus, with all those years of instability combined, Guyana suffered from 17 years of political instability characterised as politically motivated disruption, unrest, violence and crime. In addition, despite having four years of stability (2015-2019), inter alia, a regime change, for the first time there was some amount of stability but with no substantive development and progress. These, altogether, gave rise to a total of some 21 years of stymied and disrupted progress and development of Guyana. Such was due to, arguably and evidently, imprudent fiscal and public financial management.

Additionally, almost every elections period – post results, violence and unrests ensued. This was the case for the 1992, 1997 and 2001 elections. The only elections that did not ensue in violence were 2006, 2011 and 2015. There is a rich body of academic literature on Guyana’s political and economic history which confirmed, empirically, that those periods of political instability were designed to, and to a large extent, led to the State becoming dysfunctional and ungovernable.

Despite the challenging political landscape described above, the government at the time (which is the current government) nonetheless managed to achieve the following: > From 1992 – 2014 (22 years) since Guyana transitioned to a free market economy and restoration of democracy, the then government (which is now the current government) only had five years of stability out of 22 years in power in which Guyana moved from a bankrupt State, regarded as one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, to a GDP of US$4b by the end of 2020 from US$300m in 1992, representing 1,200 per cent growth in GDP, or 13 times 1992 GDP; > Per capita income of over US$5,000 from less than US$300; > Debt to GDP ratio of less than 50 per cent from a position of more than 100 per cent; > Total public debt service of 30 per cent of revenue from a position of more than 100 per cent, International Reserve of more than three months’ worth of import cover (US$800m); > More than 70 per cent of the population lifted out of poverty; > By the time there was a regime change in 2015, that government inherited about $100b in liquid cash in the bank and by the time they left office in 2020, there was $100b deficit.

Comparing Public Financial (Expenditure) Management: The Fundamental Difference in Philosophy by Two Different Administrations: The chart above tells an explicit story in the fundamental difference in philoso-

phy by two different administrations – in their management of public expenditure and financial management in general. The chart essentially illustrates total public expenditure for the period 1992–2022. In 1992, current expenditure accounted for 84 per cent of total expenditure while capital expenditure accounted for a mere 16 per cent or less than 20 per cent. By the end of 2014, current expenditure accounted for 70 per cent of total expenditure while capital expenditure accounted for 30 per cent. Following the regime change 22 years later, in 2015 for the first time again since 1992, current expenditure increased substantially to 82 per cent and continued this trend into 2019. In 2020, following another regime change, there was a stark reverse in reallocation and re-alignment of the budget whereby 2022 current expenditure accounted for 61 per cent and capital expenditure accounted for 39 per cent of the total budget, which is in line with prudent and sustainable management of public finances to ensure long term stability and growth – that is, increased investments in capital expenditure to build out the economy, and thereby creating a sea

of opportunities for sustained investments and job creation.

Though the data inputted in this chart is from 1992, it can be safely deduced that, if the implementation of the IMF’s economic reform programme began in the late 80s or early 90s, then prior to its implementation and the austerity measures then, current expenditure accounted for more than 90 per cent of total expenditure; quite an unsustainable model and recipe for bankruptcy. Thus, this explains the lack of development and progress, and largely how the economy ended up becoming a bankrupt State pre–1992.

‘Your voice will not find resistance’ –– Minister Manickchand tells teachers at opening of second Triennial Delegates Conference

EDUCATION Minister, Priya Manickchand, has assured teachers that their collective voices will be heard and, where possible and feasible, solutions to their concerns will be devised.

The minister expressed her support for teachers, on Monday, during the opening of the Guyana Teachers’ Union’s (GTU)’s second Triennial Delegates Conference at the union’s headquarters on Woolford Avenue.

Minister Manickchand, in her address, said that the GTU will not find any resistance from within the Ministry of Education.

“Your voice will not find resistance in the Ministry of Education, where it is practical, where it sensible and where it is impar-

tial. That voice must be the amalgamation and reflection of the highly diverse and sometimes contrasting ideas and desires of our teaching force,” Minister Manickchand said.

She related that it is most important that the union is recognised as balanced, unbiased and the defender of the rights of all teachers.

Minister Manickchand said that the union must stay determined if its wishes to be the impartial mediator that teachers need and deserve and must resist being easily swayed by the objectives and agendas of desperate groups within society.

Additionally, Minister Manickchand reiterated the commitment of the Education Ministry to working hand-in-hand with the union to advance the overall stand-

ing of teachers, since the ministry views this as an important necessity for the improvement of the education system.

There are over 2500 teachers who are beneficiaries of scholarships through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) pursuing degrees, masters, PhDs and postgraduate programmes.

She added that due to the pandemic and the physical closure of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), teacher training was expanded and offered online, increasing the intake at the college from the traditional 535 to now 3,000 new students.

Minister Manickchand said that the aim is to have 100 per cent of the teachers in the education system be

trained or in the process of being trained. She said that while there are great untrained teachers, students are more likely to receive better instruction from trained teachers.

Further, she said that the ministry and the union must work in partnership for the securement of a better future for the children of Guyana; this would entail both parties developing a stronger alliance that fosters greater conversation to facilitate the voices of teachers being fully and unceasingly heard.

Meanwhile, President of the GTU, Mark Lyte said that COVID-19 allowed the Ministry of Education and teachers to utilise and

embrace the benefits of technology to education delivery and management.

In his view, there needs to be greater investment in the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) moving forward.

Confessed wife-beater gets 18 months

MAGISTRATE, Esther Sam, on Thursday, sentenced a man to serve 18 months behind bars after he confessed to brutally beating his 23-year-old wife.

He appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court and admitted to beating his wife on April 11, 2022, at Charity, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

This newspaper un-

derstands that the incident was reportedly captured on a closed-circuit television camera. That video was circulated on social media.

In a video seen by this

publication which purports to show the incident, the man, believed to be the confessed wife-beater, is seen stomping someone who appears to be a woman in the head.

The man on video then threw the woman onto the ground, and continued the attack.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was admitted for two days.

The matter was later reported to the police, and the man was initially released on $50,000 station bail.

He later appeared in court, and plead guilty.

Minister Teixeira, team host LCDS consultation in Kamarang

MINISTER of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira, on Wednesday, along with a team from the Office of the President and other key government agencies, con-

ducted a consultation on the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) in Kamarang, Region Seven.

Representatives of Kako, Imbaimadai, Waramadong, Paruima, Philipai, Chi-

naweng, Jawalla, Warawata and other satellite villages were also present at the consultation held at the Kamarang Primary School.

Based on the outcomes of these consultations, the LCDS 2030 will be updated and tabled in the National Assembly.

Guyana’s first Juvenile Drug Treatment Court to open soon

THE Adolescent/Juvenile Drug Treatment Court (DTC) will soon be launched with the aim of reforming the juvenile justice system, and reducing social ills, by providing alternatives to young offenders who are drug abusers.

Currently, the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana is conducting a training workshop in preparation for the launch of the Juvenile DTC in Guyana, and the strengthening of the adult DTC. The three-day workshop, which commenced on Wednesday at the Regency Suites, Georgetown, will conclude on Friday.

The workshop is hosted with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with support from the Organization of American States Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (OAS. CICAD), the Drug Demand Reduction Project, and the Ministry of Health.

According to a statement from the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, the institution is aware that drug addiction has become a societal and public health issue, with many offenders committing minor offences to support their habits.

The Supreme Court’s statement noted that, through sensitisation and training locally, regionally, and internationally, there is a better approach, other than punitive measures, in treating with persons who have substance abuse disorders.

The programme adds to the adult pilot project for reforming drug offenders, which showed that participants who complete the programmes were significantly less likely to be repeat offenders, compared to those sentenced with traditional punishments.

The Supreme Court statement further said the DTC is essentially a problem-solving court that addresses the

needs of each participant, including his/ her drug use and the criminal behaviour associated with it.

It noted, additionally, that participants of the Juvenile DTC will learn about substance use and the effects of different substances, the various stages of adolescent development, assessing risk, needs and resilience of adolescents in conflict with the law, the need for specialized interventions for adolescents, trauma and its impact on adolescents, and related issues such as gender considerations.

Further, participants will identify support systems that are necessary for the success of the courts, including family support groups.

The date for the launch of the Adolescent/Juvenile DTC will be announced shortly by the Supreme Court of Judicature, the institution said in its statement.

This is not the first time the Supreme Court of Judicature has embarked on a venture to strengthen the juvenile justice system.

In October 2018, the first Children’s Court was commissioned to support reform rather than punishment for young offenders under the age of 17.

The cases presently before the young offenders’ court include murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, discharging a loaded firearm, and other petty crimes.

The offenders are placed into the custody of the Juvenile Holding Centre at Sophia, Georgetown, while their matters are dealt with privately by the courts to protect their identities.

A regular feature of this process is the inclusion of a probation officer and child protection officer during hearings. The Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) pre-screens young offenders.

FAO calls for import financing facility for poorer nations

THE Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is calling for a global Food Import Financing Facility (FIFF) to help poorer countries deal with surging prices as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The FIFF, which is also aimed at increasing global agricultural production and productivity in a sustainable way, is one of six policy proposals put together by FAO in response to the crisis.

Russia and Ukraine are important players in the global food market, with almost 50 countries dependent on them for at least 30 per cent of their wheat import needs. Russia is also a key exporter of fertilisers.

In 2020, it ranked as the top exporter of nitrogen fertilisers, the second leading supplier of potassium, and the third largest exporter of phosphorous fertiliser. Energy prices have also been rising, mostly due to market conditions.

hungry between 2022 and 2026, compared to the baseline.

“The war can have multiple implications for global markets and food security,” FAO Director-General

QU Dongyu said today in a video message to a Group of 20 meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in Washington.

The FIFF, which would complement existing mecha-

nisms within the UN system, would be strictly based on urgent needs and limited to low and lower middle-income net food-importing countries, Qu said.

In addition, it is designed to increase future resilience by asking eligible countries to commit to invest more in sustainable agri-food systems. Qu said the FIFF has been stress-tested by FAO for its impact on the global markets and would be convenient to administrate and scale up.

“The lesson learned is that we need to increase agricultural production and productivity in the world while being sustainable,” Qu told the meeting. “It is high time to work together for ending hunger and malnutrition in the world.”

‘Mother & Daughter Pageant’ returns with ‘red carpet affair’ on May 7

By Naomi Parris LIKE many other annual traditions, Supa Stylistics’ “Mother & Daughter Pageant” paused briefly when the pandemic hit two years ago. They’re ready for a comeback on May 7.

With 20 contesting pairs in three categories, the Mother & Daughter Pageant promises to be a red carpet affair with grand prizes for takes.

Speaking at a press conference, on Thursday, at the National Cultural Centre, Georgetown, where the pageant will be held, the pageant’s co-founders, Mrs Ingrid Fung, and her daughter, Pageant Director and Executive Producer, Dr Sulan Fung, disclosed that the event will be held under the theme, “Inescapable Spring of Love”.

Meanwhile, Andrew Tyndall, National Events Coordinator of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, disclosed that with the recent upgrade made to the National Cultural Centre, the event will be a grand entertainment slam, with top quality production.

In November last, the Ministry installed new seats in the centre’s auditorium.

Tyndall noted further enhancements were made to the centre’s lighting and sound systems which would increase production quality.

Tickets for the pageant are currently on sale at the ticketing booth of National Cultural Centre, priced at $3,000 and $4,000.

Dexta Daps gave captivating performance at ‘vent x owna’ concert - Chris Martin shines, leaving the crowd begging for more

By Tamica Garnett HE sauntered out on to the stage at 01:50hrs on Sunday, wearing a white shirt, brown blazer, black skinny jeans and a white rag on his head, covering his neatly done cornrows.

Wisps of smoke surrounded him, giving him a mystical air. The crowd, mostly made up of eager women, immediately whipped into a frenzy.

That was the start of the performance by Jamaican dancehall/reggae

artiste, Dexta Daps, at the “vent x owna” concert, which started late Saturday night and ended on Sunday morning at the National Stadium, Providence.

The concert, headlined

by Daps, whose real name is Louis Grandison, was considered the most anticipated event of the Easter weekend.

Made all the grander by the fact that this was the first Easter weekend in two years that events are being held, after COVID-19 had put

a pause to all events.

As Daps walked out on stage, persons immediately whipped out their cellular phones to capture the moment they got to witness Dexta Daps live in concert in Guyana. At least one young lady in the VIP section faked a collapse into the arms of the young man she was with.

The marketing of the event paid off as both the VIP and regular sections were packed to capacity.

opened his performance by thanking his fans and telling them how honoured he was at the huge turnout.

The hazel-eyed songster then got into giving his fans what they came for, a provocative, explicit content-filled performance.

Within minutes of getting on stage and belting out some lyrics, Daps found himself drenched in sweat, his shirt matted to his athletic physique.

With release of ‘Frozen Riddim’, Berbice musician opens door for upcoming local artistes

To raise funds for supporting the projects, Dellon has lined up a few sponsors, and also uses revenue from his small business, “Dellon Fragrance and Gift Centre” in Number 51 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

He would also do ads, at a small cost, on his burgeoning social media pages.

For ‘Frozen’, three songs, written by Chris Nelson, Lil Million, and Determine, were released last week. The official release of the entire album, however, is set for Friday night.

As the producer of ‘Frozen’ and owner of “Dellon Entertainment”, Dellon said he’s already seen improvement in the traffic on his social media, especially on his YouTube channel.

DELLON Alpheus Hinds is all set to officially release his ‘Frozen Riddim’ at midnight on Friday, featuring 13 talented local artistes that he has worked along with voluntarily to boost their music in the local industry.

Hinds has experienced the difficulty of moving music forward, mainly due to a lack of resources. Because of that, he’s expressed determination to do all he can to support local musicians finding their way.

Hinds is not alone, however. Adrian Johnson, of AJ Records, has also given his

time to boost local talent, Dellon told the Buzz in an interview this week.

“I reached out to them, played the instrumental for them, paid the studio time and everything. A lot of artistes have the talent, but don’t get the financial support,” Dellon, who has been doing music since he was a teenager, observed.

With the love and passion that he’s developed for music, Dellon said it’s not about the money for him.

“It’s about trying to help those who have the actual talent and need that help to get out there.”

His Facebook Page has over 17,000 followers, while the songs also received a good response on TikTok. “I don’t think; I know people will love Frozen because they will be able to relate to all of the songs on the project. At some time in their lives, they would have experienced what the artistes are singing about,” Dellon shared, adding that he personally experienced some of the same things.

As was expected throughout the performance, many a young ladies tried to get up on stage to steal a dance with the sought-after lyricist.

One young lady, in a memorable forest green floral two-piece outfit, succeeded in her attempts, and earned a chance to briefly gyrate with Daps, who feigned shyness and eventually left the young

lady to dance on her own.

Her time on stage barely went past the statutory 15 seconds for shortlived fame, but for some, she left a lasting impression, doing a well-played “splits” at the end of her stage run before scampering off.

By the time Daps had gotten to the stage, the crowd was already wellprepped, due to a titillating, high energy performance by fellow reggae/ dancehall artiste, Christopher Martin, who came on just before Daps, and had the crowd wanting for more by the time he

exited.

“Guyana’s music industry has great potential. I would like Guyanese music to be played more during the rush hours, so people can actually get to hear their own Guyanese artistes,” Dellon said.

Martin was also kind enough to take off his shirt and share it with a young lady in the crowd, but when one young lady climbed on stage to “whine up” on the artiste,

he chose instead to keep it classy and decline her gyrating offer.

The night closed off with a performance by old timer, Louie Culture, who resonated more with the older crowd as he belted out some of his reggae classics like “Gangalee”, “No Gal”, “Big and Bold”, and “Malfunction” among others.

Like with many events, there has since been much mixed reviews from the Guyanese public on the success of the concert.

Though many were very pleased with Mr Daps’ performance, there were

those who conveyed that the pot had needed a little more spice.

The event also seemed to have been marred by an incident after the show which saw patrons in the VIP and VVIP sections have difficulty getting photos with Daps, although it was promised as part of their ticket package.

Notwithstanding the hiccups, Daps has truly shown that he’s still much in demand by his Guyanese fans. Many left the show satisfied that they got their monies worth.

Johnny Depp to face cross-examination in defamation case against ex-wife

ACTOR, Johnny Depp will face questioning from attorneys for exwife and actress, Amber Heard, on Thursday, after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star accused her of making false accusations that ruined his reputation and career.

Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 35, for US$50 million after she accused him of abuse.

Pollard’s T20 World Cup success will remain with us, says WIPA

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) - Regional players union, WIPA, has thanked Kieron Pollard for his contribution to West Indies cricket, following the player’s retirement from international cricket on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, WIPA highlighted the Trinidadian’s role in West Indies’ capture of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup as one of the legacy moments of his career.

LONG-time sponsor of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) MS, Bakewell last week renewed its cricket sponsorship of the club.

The renewal of the sponsorship took place at the company’s Triumph, East Coast head office.

Bakewell secretary Natasha Bhikari handed over the cricket sponsorship to RHTYSC Secretary/ CEO Hilbert Foster and vice-president Mark Papannah.

Foster disclosed that the company came on board as an official sponsor of the club after a visit by the founder of Bakewell, Naeem Nasir, and general manager Rajiv Ganga.

Bakewell was the fourth major sponsor to come on board, following in the footsteps of Courts, GTT and Farfan and Mendes Ltd. Bakewell, at the start of the sponsorship, supported the club second division team and later added the Under -17 team .

The two teams over the last 23 years have won close to 20 different tournaments organised by either the RHTYSC or Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).

The teams also played a major role in the development of numerous national players and have invested heavily in moulding them into all-round individuals who were capable of representing Guyana or the West Indies at the highest levels.

Super League trio dealt blow in legal battle with UEFA

REAL Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus face the renewed threat of a Champions League ban over their role in driving plans for a Super League.

An injunction, blocking UEFA from taking disciplinary action against the trio, has been overturned by the Madrid commercial court which imposed it last year, appearing to give European football’s governing body the chance to reopen disciplinary proceedings against them.

Real, Barca and Juve have remained steadfast and unapologetic over their role in the foundation of the Super League a year ago, which collapsed within 48 hours amid pressure from UEFA, FIFA, the British Government and outrage from supporters.

They therefore risk the threat of hefty sanctions from UEFA should it reopen disciplinary proceedings. The decision to overturn the injunction can be appealed against by the clubs.

The other nine clubs involved in the Super League reached an agreement with UEFA in May last year over their reintegration which included ‘goodwill’ payments of 15 million euros each and the withholding of five per cent of revenue from their next season in a UEFA club competition, plus a commitment to pay huge fines if they joined an unapproved tournament in the future.

However, the Madrid court injunction also prevented UEFA from following through on the penalties against those nine clubs, who have all now rejoined the European Club Association.

A UEFA spokesperson said: “UEFA has today received the order of the Madrid court, lifting the precautionary measures in their entirety.

“UEFA welcomes this decision and is considering its implications. UEFA will not be making any further comment for the time being.”

Meanwhile, UEFA has endorsed a fans’ petition called ‘Win It On The Pitch’ amid signs it may be prepared to drop controversial plans to award two places in the new-look Champions League based on historic performance, Representatives from European football’s governing body

met with Football Supporters Europe this week, a year on from the collapse of the Super League.

UEFA expressed its support for the petition, called a European Citizens’ Initiative, which asks the European Union to protect the principles of sporting merit, promotion and relegation in law.

Those principles do not appear to be reflected in the proposal to allow two clubs a place in the lucrative Champions League group phase from 2024 onwards based on their historic coefficient score, if they finish just outside the regular Champions League qualification spots.

The coefficient is calculated based on a side’s European performance over the previous five seasons.

However, sources have told the PA news agency they believe UEFA could still drop the coefficient places, a move which would no doubt create a row with the ECA which supports their introduction. It is understood there remains some strong internal pushback within UEFA against the idea of granting the place, UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said yesterday: “Football belongs to its fans and they played a critical role in stopping last year’s shameless attempt by a few wealthy clubs to take it away.

“We applaud FSE for this Eu-

ropean Citizens’ Initiative, which we fully encourage and support.”

UEFA’s executive committee is expected to make a final decision on the new format for European club competitions post2024 on May 10 in Vienna.

The decision on coefficient places is a hugely controversial one. UEFA is under pressure on the one hand to keep onside the fans who helped sink the Super League, but on the other to keep Europe’s biggest clubs happy by providing a safety net, on the basis that the big clubs drive the revenue to the competition.

Sources close to the ECA say that a failure to concede some ground to Europe’s commercial powerhouse clubs via the coefficient places risks reviving the threat of a Super League.

Fans’ groups such as FSE argue that UEFA would be laying the ground for a competition that could ultimately morph into a Super League if it approves those places, and increases the number of group stage matches from six to 10.

FSE executive director Ronan Evain said yesterday: “The Super League plot may have failed, but the fight is far from over. “‘Win It On The Pitch’ is a simple way for ordinary citizens to demand the EU take action to secure the future of our most popular and played sport.

POUDEROYEN Football Club (PFC) emerged as the champions of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Easter bounce-back tournament which ended on Easter Sunday night at the Leonora Track and Field Centre football ground.

Coming up against the #1 side in the association, the Pouderoyen lads prevailed 3-2 in an exciting final to lift the Trophy Stall’s donated winners’ trophy. There were no cash prizes as the newly elected WDFA executive, led by Trevor Williams and secretary Adrian Giddings, decided to pull off the tournament to give clubs the chance to get back into competitive mode.

Scoring for Pouderoyen were Dwain St. Kitts in the 10th minute, Chidi Matthews in the 40th minute, and Telelen Adolph, one minute later. Eagles got their goals from Nashawn Livan in the 20th minute and Daniel Clark in the 60th minute.

Wisden offers sobering critique of ailing English game

WHILE arrival of a new Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack is an annual cause for celebration among the sport’s most ardent fans, the 2022 edition represents a sobering critique of an ailing English game.

The famous yellow book has never been afraid to hold up an unflattering mirror to its subject but, even by its own standards, the 159th edition represents a searing state-ofthe-nation address.

It is, perhaps, no surprise to find Wisden shaking its head at establishment rather than nodding its head in approval. In the 12 months since it last appeared, there has been much to bemoan and little to applaud.

From the fallout of Azeem Rafiq’s harrowing account of systemic racial discrimination to the dire form of the men’s flagship Test team and a spate of sackings and resignations from key positions, it has been a messy period to reflect on.

Joe Root’s picture adorns the cover, staring down the lens as he executes a glorious cover drive, and he is also acclaimed as the world’s leading cricketer in the awards pages, but the batting excellence that saw him touch new heights at the crease is a lesser part of the broader story.

England’s entire Ashes campaign, which ended in a 4-0 thrashing, is eviscerated in Lawrence Booth’s editor’s notes. A decade into the prestigious role, Booth savages the preparation and execution of a torrid trip Down Under, suggesting “no tactic as too ill-conceived, no plan too half-baked” and suggests the entire leadership struc-

ture is beset by “delusion”.

Contextualising the hammering among other similar setbacks, he adds: “In a crowded field, this was one of England’s most hapless tours”.

While blame is apportioned among those on the ground, including the sacked Chris Silverwood (“a good man but he was out of his depth, thrown into the open sea with a deflated lifebelt”), much of the ire is reserved for decision-makers who condemn England to an exhausting schedule that “reduces athletes to husks”.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Tom Harrison cops a volley of criticism, not least for his controversial acceptance of a lucrative contractual bonus in a period that saw 62 staff members made redundant, as well as the twin ills of the racism storm and the Test team’s struggles.

Having called on Harrison to return some of that money to facilitate a return for some of those who lost their jobs or to boost the coffers of the organisation’s diversity programme, Booth bemoans “the soulless logic of the suiterati, who regard cricket as a business not a sport, measured in pounds and

rupees, not runs and wickets”.

The editor’s notes also cover Rafiq’s landmark appearance in front of a parliamentary select committee in November, but the former Yorkshire spinner is also given the room to speak for himself in a lengthy first-person essay. Having laid bare his own experiences at the vanguard of cricket’s lengthy reckoning with ingrained discrimination, he ends with an exhortation for cricket to seize its watershed moment.

“If the ECB don’t learn from this, we’ll be sitting here in 20 years with another racism scandal on our

hands,” he writes.

“If that happens, I hope whoever is involved survives the experience – because I nearly didn’t.”

Other concerns are floated – over the IPL’s growing footprint, the ECB’s flippant cancellation of a tour to Pakistan and tepid promotion of the county game – but there are glimmers of hope to be found too.

Much of the optimism concerns gender equality, with scepticism over The Hundred tempered by an enthusiastic embrace of the women’s competition and space afforded to the adoption of the neutral ‘batter’ instead of ‘batsman’. While Emma John argues compellingly for the change, a refusenik’s rebuttal from Alex Massie falls predictably flat.

Light is also shone on the grim fate of women’s cricket – and women’s lives – in Afghanistan after the return of the Taliban regime, with former development officer Tuba Sangar’s narrative ending in four simple words: “Please don’t forget us.”

Hopes for better days – on a cricketing and cultural level – persist but where the game falls short, the 160th edition of Wisden will be there to shine an uncomfortable light. (Yahoo Sport)

SERENA Williams and Lewis Hamilton have joined Martin Broughton’s bid to buy Chelsea. Their offer is one of three being considered by Roman Abramovich, club executives and the US bank Raine, which is overseeing the sale.

Williams, the winner of 23 tennis grand slam singles titles, and Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One world champion, have pledged what are understood to be small sums of money relative to a bid of more than £200M. Broughton’s partners also include the World Athletics president, Sebastian Coe, and the owners of Philadelphia 76ers basketball team, Josh Harris and David Blitzer. Harris and Blitzer also have stakes in Crystal Palace

and they will need to sell those to become shareholders at Chelsea.

“We can confirm Lewis has joined Sir Martin Broughton’s bid,” a spokesperson for Hamilton said. It is understood the Mercedes driver, who is an Arsenal fan, hopes that, among other things, he could have a positive effect on diversity and inclusion at Chelsea and in the club’s local community.

Williams is an investor in Los Angeles’ Angel City FC, who play in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Government ready to assist CARIFTA athletes realise track & field dream THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr announced yesterday that his Government is ready to assist the country’s CARIFTA Games athletes in realising their track and field dreams.

Guyana returned home with seven medals – two gold, three silver and two bronze – while finishing fifth on the medal standings behind Trinidad and Tobago (23), British Virgin Islands (7), The Bahamas (17) and Jamaica (92).

Attoya Harvey and Anisha Gibbons won gold in the 1500m and U20 Javelin respectively. However, Harvey’s memorable performance on the track left the competition in awe.

Competing in the U17 event at her first outing at the CARIFTA Games, Harvey won gold in the 1500m (4:45.75), silver in the 3000m (10:51.40) and bronze in the 800m (2:14.08).

Narissa McPherson – silver (U17 400m), Javon Roberts – silver (U17 1500m) and Adriel Austin - bronze (U20 800m) are the other medallists from the country’s 13-member team.

While the team received a warm welcome home by Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, Chairman of the National Sports Commission Kashif Muhammad, family and well-wishers, the athletes were told at yesterday’s meeting with Minister Ramson, that the Government of Guyana is

planning an event to truly show them an appreciation for their outstanding performances.

Meanwhile, Minister Ramson, also stated that he’s looking forward to meeting the athletes individually. One athlete, Attoya Harvey, already knows what she wants – help in making her Olympic dream come true.

Speaking to Chronicle Sport, Harvey, when asked what she would be seeking assistance for, said “qualifying for the Olympics”.

“Representing Guyana at the Olympics is my dream, so I would love the support in helping me to live that dream,” the always smiling athlete said.

Harvey will be 18 when the 2024 Olympics comes around in Paris. And while she’s not sure which event she will focus on, for now, the 1500m seems like her strongest.

For the 2020 Olympics, the qualifying standard for the 1500m women’s event was 4:04.20. Harvey won the U17 1500m gold in Jamaica with a time of four minutes 45.75.

The country’s national record in the 1500m (4:17.91) is held by twotime Olympian and South American champion, Marian Burnett.

Burnett also holds the 800m national record (1:59.47) Whatever the plans are, Harvey seems determined on making her Olympic dream come true.
