Guyana crystalising place as entertainment capital of the region –– says Minister Walrond, as Rodeo returns with biggest party in Region Nine

WITH the hosting of Cricket Carnival in September, an event that will bring some of the biggest names in the regional and international entertainment industries to Guyana, the country is crystalising its place as the entertainment capital of the region.

This is according to Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Oneidge Walrond, who was at the time addressing revellers who turned up in the hundreds at Rodeo 2022 to celebrate the return of the event at the Triple R Ground, Lethem, Region Nine, on Saturday.

The grand annual event was put on pause for two years due to COVID-19 and the turnout on Saturday suggests that party goers throughout Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, New York, neighbouring Brazil and other countries, could not wait for it to happen.

The celebration began around 15:00hrs and ended around 03:00hrs the next day.

In Lethem, rooms were secured weeks in advance and airlines were fully booked.

Minister Walrond said she felt the buzz a distance away for the centre of the

robust local tourism product.

Guyana recently secured the rights to host the next three CPL finals here and Minister Walrond was quick to point out that added to the popular event is a carnival component.

When the event bowls off for the two weeks in September, matches will be hosted in Guyana and during that time, the Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister told the Rodeo revellers in Lethem that some of the biggest names in the regional and entertainment industries will be performing in Guyana.

Guyana, she said, is also

establishing itself as a destination to host large conferences and events.

“We are moving further to crystalise our place as the entertainment capital of the region,” Minister Walrond said, while pointing out that big events will be strategically hosted to give visitors an opportunity to travel to all the regions of Guyana and to experience the unique Guyanese culture.

Aside from selling Guyana to the world, the government is also hoping that this strategy spreads the “tourism dollar” throughout Guyana.

LOCALS The objective is not only to attract foreigners to Guyana, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce wants to see more Guyanese exploring this beautiful country.

“We love our international visitors for sure and we welcome all of you, but we also want Guyanese to be able to experience this exceptional product that Guyana has to offer,” Minister Walrond said.

And from the look things — the booked-out airlines, hotel accommodations and plethore of photos of Rodeo on social media – the message of the Tourism Ministry is catching on.

This year, the Pakaraima Mountain Safari attracted

some 50 participants. The Bartica Regatta in Region Seven was a large party and simultaneously, another big part of Rodeo was held in Lethem even while a major concert was held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The majority of the major concerts are held in Region Four and Minister Walrond is determined to spread the entertainment to other regions, especially when it comes to events that bring people together, such as Rodeo.

“We believe that there is market in the Caribbean for this event and it is very likely that people will come to Guyana just to experience the Rupununi Rodeo,” she said, as she challenged the organisers to build capacity to cater for future growth of the event.

Region Nine, the minister noted, has tremendous tourism potential.

RAINFOREST AND SAVANNAH North Rupununi is situated in the heart of unspoiled rainforest, while Central and South Rupununi are home to the border town, Lethem, and vast savannah lands and cowboy vibes.

The government continues to invest heavily to enhance the tourism product in the North, South and Central Rupununi, as it understands

the benefits of the sector to families and communities there, Minister Walrond said.

In Karasabai, the government continues to support the Sun Parakeet Birding Project and works in close collaboration with the community of Toka as part of a wide plan on improving existing tourism destinations. This year will also see upgrades to the Rewa Eco Lodge and Caiman House.

Communities in Central Rupununi, including Nappi and St Ignatius, Minister Walrond said, continue to enjoy the support of the Tourism, Industry and Commerce Ministry and this year will also see works being done at

the Kumu and Moco Moco falls.

In the South, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is working with stakeholders to develop 10 new tourism products and will also provide training and marketing of them.

In addition, some 200 persons from the Rupununi will be trained this year in the culinary arts, events management and as tour guides President, Dr Irfaan Ali, who also addressed the gathering, said the Rupununi Rodeo is a major national event and when Guyana combines its efforts with South American giant, Brazil, which is next door, it could become a global one.

“This event has an enormous opportunity to be one of the marquee events in the Caribbean. In my opinion, this even has its own appeal and can stand tall, side-byside, with the best of cricket, the best of racing and we intend to build this event to be the best,” he told the merry gathering.

Making Region Nine a stake in the tourism menu, however, requires investment, a fact the President acknowledged, and shared the good news that a contract has been awarded for the building of all bridges to international standards from Linden all the way to Lethem.

A project has also commenced to pave the highway from Linden to Mabura Hill and the government is exploring different options, he said, to continue the work from Mabura Hill to Lethem.

Lyte shines at GTU elections –– retains presidency; newcomer Mariska Williams elected First Vice-President

MARK Lyte has prevailed over Linden’s Vanessa Kissoon to secure his third re-election as President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).

According to statistics released by the GTU, Lyte secured 2,751 votes, 647 more than Kissoon, in an election which saw most of the previous executives being re-elected by wide margins.

The primary newcomer was former North Georgetown District Branch Manager Mariska Williams, who secured 3,406 votes to get the nod for the post of first Vice-President. She prevailed over Lemeine Collins who received 1,411 votes.

Coretta McDonald was re-elected to her position as General-Secretary after amassing 2,426 votes for a win over Milne Seymour, who had 1,746 votes, and Dorcel Farley who had 670 votes.

With 3,994 votes, Julian Cambridge returned as the second Vice-President, prevailing over Komal Singh, who had 842 votes.

Heathcliff Peter garnered 1,749 votes to win the post of Deputy General-Secretary, which was the most contested position with five candidates.

Several of the posts saw default wins, due to unopposed nominees. Sumanta Alleyne was the only nominee for the post of treasurer, while Collis Nicholson was unopposed for the position of Vice-President of the Demerara region.

Donnette D’Andrade was unopposed for the Berbice Regional Vice-President position. Rabinauth Boodram is the new Regional Vice-President (Essequibo).

will be officially declared when the second GTU triennial conference is convened from April 20 – 22.

The GTU elections ran from March 1 to April 15 and saw teachers voting by mailed-in ballots which were distributed across the various schools to teachers who are registered members

of the union as of August 2021.

The teachers were issued with the ballots and stamped envelopes to return the ballot. The counting process began on Saturday, April 16, at 08:30hrs, when the post office box was opened, and the contents were then transported to

the GTU Headquarters for counting.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle on Sunday, Lyte noted his joy at having his re-election confirmed, but noted that he was always confident about a return.

“I’m excited to be re-elected as the president. It shows that teachers continue to have confidence in me to get the job done in being their representative, and to lead a team that will engage the Ministry of Education on the salary and non-salary businesses. I was always confident (about a win). I believe the work you do will go before you and will judge you,” Lyte commented.

Lyte has been at the helm of the GTU for eight years, being first elected to the position in 2014 and subsequently re-elected in 2016 and again in 2019.

utive, and trade unions on a whole, Lyte noted that there were discussions on a motion for term limits at the GTU. He noted, however, that such a policy would require a change at the level of the constitution.

“That is something we have to look at constitutionally. I have seen a few motions speaking to term limits. I believe that will be tabled then we will see how the delegates vote on that. Sometimes you have persons in a very senior position for a long time being re-elected over and over. I am happy for the opportunity, but it is the Constitution that allows for it,” he noted.

Speaking on his objectives for the union over his next three years, Lyte noted that he will be looking to engage with the Ministry of Education on policy matters and the establishment of a new multi-year agreement.

Regional central banks may launch digital currency (Barbados Today) THE future of money is digital. It is estimated that more than 80 per cent of central banks are considering launching a central bank digital currency (CBDC) or have already done so.

Caribbean Central Banks are among the top ten with legal digital-tender already in use in The Bahamas, while Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean are expected to follow soon.

The 2022 PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) CBDC Global Index analyses and ranks the leading retail and wholesale CBDC projects.

The Index evaluates the current stage of CBDC project development also taking into account central bank opinion and public interest.

Overall, retail CBDC projects (digital currencies designed for public use) have

reached greater maturity levels than wholesale projects (digital currencies used by financial institutions that have accounts with central banks), but the past year has seen progress on a number of successful wholesale pilots.

Retail projects in the Index are led by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) eNaira, the first CBDC in

Africa, and the Sand Dollar, issued by the Central Bank of the Bahamas as legal tender in October 2020, making the Bahamas the first country to launch a CBDC. China became the first major economy to pilot a CBDC in 2020 with the digital yuan, and as of March 2022 pilot programmes are running in 12 cities, includ-

ing Beijing and Shanghai.

On the wholesale side, the leading project in the Index is the combined effort of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to launch the mBridge project, focused on developing a proof-of-concept prototype to enable real-time, crossborder foreign exchange payments on distributed ledger technology.

Also ranked highly is the work of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), with two new CBDC projects, as it continues the development of a wholesale CBDC for cross-currency payments.

The PwC report also provides an overview of stablecoins, digital currencies collateralised by, for example, a fiat currency, which can allow a bridge to be created

between the traditional financial ecosystem and digital technologies.

Zia Paton, Digital Services leader, PwC in the Caribbean, said: “This year’s Index shows that central banks are ramping up activity in the digital currency space. Countries are at differing levels of maturity with CBDCs and each country has different motivating factors.

“Increasing financial inclusion, facilitating cross border payments and controlling financial crime are all factors that come into play. Within our region, the success of the Sand Dollar in The Bahamas and planned CBDCs in Jamaica and East Caribbean, will likely spur CBDC development in other Caribbean territories where financial inclusion is one of the key desired outcomes.”

Manufacturers’ association cautions Bank of Jamaica on interest rates

(Jamaica Observer) Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) President, John Mahfood, says the lobby organisation has cautioned the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) about the crippling impact that increasing the policy rate will have on businesses.

Speaking at a recent virtual meeting of the Lions Club of Kingston, the head of the JMEA said, “Manufacturing companies and small businesses both need access to loans and loans that are not very expensive. So, we have cautioned the Bank of Jamaica about increasing rates because the more that happens, the more difficult it is for small companies.”

With the overnight lending rate to deposit-taking institutions now at 4.5 per cent, Mahfood explained that “when this is translated into loans by banks, it means that people have to pay nine to 10 per cent on borrowings.”

Though he noted that the interest rate is not “exorbitant” at this time, Mahfood added that the JMEA would not want to see further increases as this could slow economic activity. “ We a r e c o n c e r n e d about…slowing the economy and people not being able to borrow,” Mahfood stated.

EASTER EASTER in Guyana, as in several other countries, is observed by a period of fasting, going to church and the flying of kites.

It is also about the Easter Bunny, colourfully decorated eggs, the baking of hot cross buns on Holy Thursday and church services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Easter Monday is reserved for kite-flying and other forms of revelry. In Guyana, both Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays which add to mood of joy and festivity.

Easter is indeed one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

After his crucifixion, death and burial, he rose three days later from the grave which, according to the Holy Books, redeemed mankind from sin.

Easter this year has taken on a special significance, given the muted observances over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is reflected in the record number of kite-flying activities and the thousands of Guyanese who take to the seawalls, beaches and other public spaces to fly kites and participate in the festivities.

For many Guyanese, Easter is more than the religious significance associated with the festival. Kite-flying is fun for adults and children and a wonderful way for families

and friends to get together, picnic-style. To a large extent, it is a display of our multi-culturalism and religious diversity which has now become a defining characteristic of our ethno-cultural landscape.

Guyana is today a model of religious and cultural diversity. There is a high degree of religious tolerance, something that cannot be said for several other countries where there are religious and other forms of persecution.

Unfortunately, this year’s celebrations are taking place when there is a debilitating situation in Ukraine where thousands of lives have been lost, millions of people displaced and billions of dollars in damage to property and infrastructure. There is also hunger and malnutrition in several parts of the world due to a combination of conflicts, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s Easter observances in Guyana come at a time when there was a convergence of the fasting period of all three of the major religions in Guyana, namely Christianity, Islam and Hinduism as manifested in Lent, Ramadan and Navratri. This unique convergence has not gone unnoticed

by President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who declared a National Day of Fasting and Prayers on April 8 in which Guyanese from all walks of life and from all religious faiths

participated.

President Ali has said that the occasion provided an opportunity for persons to join with each other to promote the spirit of togetherness. He exhorted all Guyanese “to fast together, pray together and stay together as ‘ One Guyana.”

As the saying goes, a nation that prays together stays together and this is one of the main thrusts of the ‘One Guyana’ concept as envisioned by President Ali. This idea of ‘oneness’ transcends the narrow confines of race and politics and has resonated with the vast majority of Guyanese.

Easter in Guyana this year has found the country on the cusp of major transformation and modernisation.

The Guyana economy is soaring to new heights due in large measure to our oil-andgas resources, which has undoubtedly given the economy a big lift. For this, we have to be thankful even as we remain humble and optimistic that our better days are still ahead of us.

President Ali in his Easter message has extended blissful greetings to all Guyanese.

According to the President, Easter radiates hope and happiness; it is a special time for families and friends -- kite-flying, outdoor picnics, family get-togethers, the Bartica Regatta and the Rupununi Rodeo -- all form

part of our traditional observances and a funfilled Easter weekend.

As observed by President Ali, “amidst all the happiness that Easter brings, let us remain careful and responsible in all that we do.

Let us also be mindful of our brothers and sisters, especially those who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. Let us be the shoulder upon which they can rest their cares, the arms that embrace them in love; the hands that reach out to support them; and the smile that reminds all that life’s joys and gifts are always meant to be shared.”

These are deeply profound words that connect with all Guyanese, especially those who subscribe to the teachings of Jesus Christ whose life and teachings exemplify the principles of humility, caring, sharing and human sacrifice.

Guyana, indeed the world at large, is a better place because of the embrace of the teachings of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who has demonstrated that faith in a nobler cause can literally move mountains.

As we seek to advance our own society, let us draw inspiration from the universal teachings and lessons of Easter and rise above the challenges that confront us as we seek to create a new Guyana based on the ‘One Guyana’ concept.

GECOM must win the trust of the nation Dear Editor,

GECOM’s recent appointment of Melanie Marshall as Voter Registration Manager is mind-boggling.

The decision seemingly is hinged on a lack of documented evidence against the myriad complaints and objections reported against the performances of this staff member. This may be linked to the justifiable discard of former Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, under whose responsibility the necessary deterring actions should have been taken. The sinister sweep of sensitive and confidential data from GECOM’s computers does not automatically remove the many emboldened wrongdoings of many of the staff, and therefore, these should not be merely swept aside in providing a clean slate.

Critically, it does not require any major research competence in order for one to link the reasons for this seemingly abstract position in the case of Melanie Marshall. Some

in Lowenfield’s cabal group in GECOM were first emboldened by the biased antics of the unilaterally appointed CEO James Patterson. Following his ejection by the Caribbean Court of Justice, the key players served to fulfil strategic roles in Lowenfield’s plans. Therefore, re-employment considerations should not be merely academic qualifications, but rather, a much closer look through an absolute interrogation of her previous performance in the various roles.

GECOM must so do for all and sundry if the institution will win the trust of this nation.

Melanie Marshall was officially the Region #4 Returning Officer during the 2015 National and Regional Elections. Notably, the PPP/C and other minority parties complained bitterly about the fact that she was not using the Statements of Polls. To these complaints, she deliberately adjourned the process and committed to a continuation the following day. The rest is history! In 2015, the introduction of the scandalous ‘broadsheet’ was one of the main reasons for

an election petition in the courts, given the role of some GECOM staff in the attempted rigging that took place.

It must also be noted that in 2016 the relvant PPP/C personnel connected to GECOM, vehemently opposed her as the touted Returning Officer in Region #4 for the Local Government Elections. She was subsequently sidelined. In 2018, again the PPP/C presented major objections to her selection to function as Returning Officer in Region #4 during the Local Government Elections. She was not appointed to any substantial position in the 2020 National and Regional Elections.

Of note, after she was opposed, the controversial Keith Lowenfield who is before the courts on election fraud charges, catapulted the ‘Returning Officer’from Region #5 to the position of Returning Officer in Region #4.

As recent history will confirm, the substitute Clairmont Mingo is the one who continued with the ‘rigging broadsheet.’

He was dismissed and is now also before the court for fraud. It must be noted that

the Presiding Officers on the East Coast of Demerara during Election Day on March 02, 2020, committed some unpardonable sins. The Presiding Officers claimed that they were wrongly instructed by GECOM officials. Consequently, the PNC began making all sorts of false allegations of what were and were not in the ballot boxes. The Guyana Elections Commission must have a thorough discussion on what took place before and after the 2020 National and Regional Elections.

Most seriously, GECOM must let the nation know what was Melanie Marshall’s role during and after the 2020 Elections.

As they are saying that she was confirmed as the Voter Registration Manager, we need to know when and who appointed her to act as the Voter Registration Manager when that position was advertised.

Canada, US reaffirm continued centrality of FAO mandate

(FAO) AS the world confronts war, humanitarian emergencies, the impacts of the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, overlapping with the persistent challenges of hunger and poverty, FAO is responding urgently to build resilient agrifood systems.

This was the message of QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) at the seventh session of the Informal North American Regional Conference (INARC), which was hosted virtually by the United States from 12 to 14 April 2022.

The INARC was established in 2010 as a forum to strengthen collaboration between FAO and the North American Region, comprising Canada and the United States. It provides an opportunity for these two FAO Members to share their priorities with FAO, and for a mutual exchange on the way forward for the effective implementation of the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31.

Since the idea of a permanent UN agency focused on food, nutrition and agriculture was first planted in Hot Springs, Virginia, where 44 governments gathered 80 years ago, and FAO’s establishment in Quebec in 1945, both the US and Canada have played a key role across FAO’s areas of work, and are among the organization’s top resource partners.

“The ongoing fruitful collaboration between the North America region and FAO is crucial, and I appreciate the continued support you have provided,” said Qu Dongyu.

“The United States will look to FAO to use its voice, its data, its policy recommendations, and its leadership to implement the Council’s decision and address the far-reaching food security effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine,” said Ambassador Cindy

McCain, Permanent Representative of the U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome (FAO, WFP, IFAD).

“We also are ready to work with FAO to achieve an ambitious climate change strategy that addresses mitigation and adaptation, and bolsters agricultural resilience while making food systems part of the solution. And we will support the science and innovation strategy as a critical tool.”

“It is in all of our interests that FAO succeeds, to avoid the human suffering, instability, and loss of potential that we know food insecurity causes, and to ultimately get back on track to achieve SDG 2 and the broader 2030 Agenda,” said Ambassador Elissa Golberg, Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN Agencies in Rome (IFAD, FAO, WFP).

“Canada stands ready to be a constructive Member, a thoughtful partner, and an active stakeholder as we seek to deliver effective solutions for sustainable transformation of food systems.”

Over the three-day conference, FAO’s leadership presented on the Organization’s vision as outlined in the Strategic Framework 2022-31, which aims to support the 2030 Agenda by creating more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable agri-food systems.

The aspiration of the Four Betters - Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment and a Better Life for All, leaving no one behind - provide a strategic and system-oriented approach across FAO’s entire programme of work.

Overall, the two FAO Members recognized and encouraged FAO’s leadership in the areas of agrifood systems transformation and resilience building, capitalising on FAO’s unique organizational capacities and competencies to provide tools, guidance and support to Members.

1,200 hotel rooms to be soon available –– as developers gear up to start construction of multimillion-dollar hotels this year IN keeping with the planned expansion of Guyana’s tourism and hospitality sector, the construction of eight additional hotels is expected to begin this year.

This is according to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Office for Investment (Go-Invest), Dr. Peter Ramsaroop, who, in a release, said that since 2021, Go-Invest has either completed investment agreements or is finalising agreements with several

hotel chain developers.

He said: “Since 2021, we are finalising investment agreements with major international brands: Courtyard Marriott, Four Points, Hyatt Place, AC Marriott and Pasha Global to total over 1,200 rooms currently on stream to meet the 2,000-room demand by 2025.”

Among the list of hotels set to start construction are Pasha Global, Hyatt Palace, AC Marriott, Marriott Courtyard,

Four Points (under Marriott), Best Western, Kings Hotel and Herdmanston Lodge.

Those hotels, he said, have been approved by the brand and authorised to begin construction this year.

To this end, Dr. Ramsaroop added that the development of the hospitality sector in Guyana would benefit the country in many ways including through employment with the creation of thousands of new jobs for locals both during and after construction.

Additionally, he said that the hotel projects will also benefit local businesses and suppliers during its construction phase.

“Once in operation, there will be a significant demand from key sectors such as agriculture and

It is for this reason that local farmers are being urged to position themselves to benefit from the increased demand for food.

Meanwhile, he said that as it relates to infrastructure, Guyana will have accommodations of

Additionally, Dr. Ramsaroop said that the local construction companies and skilled workers will gain insight and exposure from these investments.

Added to this, Go-Invest is currently in negotiations with large hotel chain developers for additional luxury accommodations.

US$15M Lusignan heliport 75 per cent complete

THE massive 48-acre US$15M heliport facility, located at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is 75 per cent complete, according to Chairman of Orinduik Development Inc., Harrychand Tulsi.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle on Sunday, Tulsi said further work on the facility, which is slated for completion within the next few months, is contingent upon consultations with the potential operators of the facility.

“The balance of the work depends on the preferences of the final operators. We are in the process of negotiating with the operators and that 25 per cent would have to get their input, their likes, their dislikes,” Tulsi related.

Speaking directly to the impact of the facility on Guyana’s growing economy, Tulsi said: “It is crucially needed to support the offshore oper-

The primary objective of the proposed heliport, according to the company, is to provide an independent facility for helicopter operations in close proximity to Georgetown, and to address the growing need for air transport services across many sectors, including the extractive industries.

Tulsi related that the facility is expected to reduce the load being shouldered by the Ogle airport, which is currently the main port being used to transport persons and cargo to and from ExxonMobil offshore facilities.

He said that while the facility will be catering mainly to the oil and gas sector, there is a possibility that operators of the facility could implement systems to extend the use of the facility to the government and private helicopter transport.

government use for air policing, medical and other emergency responses, search and rescue and there is the possibility for local miners and tourism, but that would depend on whether the local operator will permit that,” Tulsi related.

To further serve the oil and gas sector, the company is also setting up the helicopter underwater escape training (HUET)/Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) training centre and polytechnic drilling/aviation school at Lusignan.

technic proposes to offer aviation technology programmes and courses to satisfy the base, middle, and upper-level manpower needs for the growing industry.

The company have invested US$5M into both the OMITC and Polytechnic Center to train a substantial number of Guyanese and international personnel within the oil and gas and aviation sectors.

“We’re going to be training them in things like how to escape from a crashing helicopter in the ocean, all aspects of welding, working in confined spaces, non-destructive testing of welding,

a whole range of skill set that is needed for Guyanese to effectively take over what happens in the oil and gas sector,” Tulsi said.

Speaking of the impact of both the facility and the training centres, Tulsi said: “The whole park, with the heliport, would greatly allow the government to bring home a large part of the oil operations to Guyanese.

So, I foresee, if everything goes to plan, in threefour years’ time we would be able to turn out enough certified Guyanese to man most of the operations on the oil platform.”

$77M Ministry of Finance annex to be constructed

THE Ministry of Finance has invited eligible companies to submit bids for the construction of a new annex.

In an official Invitation to Bid published in the Sunday Chronicle, the ministry noted that the annex will be constructed at Lot 77 Croal Street, Stabroek.

According to an initial engineer’s estimate, the project is expected to cost $77,600,000 and the delivery or construction period is slated for 150 days or just under five months.

To this end, it was noted that bidders should submit their bids to the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board no later than May 10, 2022 at 09:00hrs. As a result, the bids will be opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration board on the same date.

This project is part of the government’s 2022 budget, which provides massive resources for infrastructural advancement throughout the country.

Bartica businessman dies in fatal accident A 54-year-old businessman has lost his life after reportedly being struck down by a 19-year-old motorcyclist at First Avenue, Bartica.

According to police reports, Premnauth Persaud of First Avenue, Bartica, was purportedly standing on the western parapet of the avenue at around 22:00 hrs on Saturday, when the motorcyclist crashed into him.

Specifically, it is alleged that the motorcyclist with a pillion rider, while riding along the avenue,

lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the victim.

The motorcyclist has since been identified as Eric David of Three Mile, Bartica, while the pillion rider was identified as Phebeon Stanford of Carabese Hill.

David and Stanford were picked up in a conscious state while Persaud was unconscious. Persaud was rushed to the Bartica Hospital by the police and was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

David and Standford were examined by a doctor and sent away. The motorcycle was lodged for examination by a licensing and certifying officer.

A breathalyser test was conducted on David and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Persaud’s body is at the Bartica Regional Hospital’s morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The solar farm in Bartica is being constructed by Farfan & Mendes Limited and SOVENTIX Caribbean S.R.L. It comes under the renewable energy solutions for the hinterland, which is one of the major components under the Energy Matrix Diversification and Strengthening of the Department of Energy programme funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

A 1.0-megawatt solar farm is also being constructed in Lethem, Region Nine.

In Budget 2022, the sum of $1.4 billion has been allotted for 33 MWs solar farms for Berbice, Essequibo and Linden.

The establishment of solar farms around the country forms part of the government’s plan to reduce the cost of energy by 50 per cent.

Additionally, in Budget 2022, $29.4 billion is allotted to Guyana’s energy sector, with $20.8 billion earmarked for the gas-toenergy project. This project encompasses the establishment of a power plant to generate 300 MW of power as well as a Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) plant that will cover domestic demand.

Four ‘busted’ with over $2.4M in cocaine, marijuana FOUR persons, including a woman and a minor, were, on Saturday, arrested with $2.4 million worth of cocaine, along with a small parcel of cannabis, during a narcotics raid at a property in Bel Air Avenue, Lamaha Garden.

According to a release from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), the operation was conducted at a Bel Air Avenue residence, where two parcels of cocaine and a quantity of cannabis were found.

The suspects were arrested and taken to the CANU Headquarters, where a test was done on the substances within the two parcels and was found to be cocaine and cannabis.

The cocaine had a total weight of 2.292 kilograms, with a street value of approximately $2.4 million, while the cannabis weighed 64 grams. All of the suspects are presently in custody pending further investigations.

According to CANU, one of the male suspects is a 55-year-old businessman who is no stranger to the law. In 2013, he was charged with narcotics trafficking after cocaine was found in a lumber shipment.

Gender & Equality Commission highlights need for partnerships in five-year plan

THE Women and Gender Equality Commission (WGEC)’s five-year strategic plan (2021 – 2026) has highlighted the need for a series of collaborative and strategic partnerships to support the overcoming of challenges that the Commission continues to face, such as limitations in financial and technical

resources.

The 2021 - 2026 plan, the Commission noted, was preceded by the 2013 2018 plan, and while much was achieved under it, the challenges were three-fold and included inadequate technical and financial resources; Guyana’s terrain which made it difficult to reach underserved commu-

nities and a political climate that does not always place gender justice at the front of the agenda.

“To mitigate these challenges, the new plan embraces both a top-down and bottom-up approach, where networks of support will be strengthened to enable the Commission to purposefully and efficiently

execute its constitutional responsibilities for a gender just Guyana,” the WGEC highlighted in its latest plan.

Having faced several challenges in the past in achieving its goals, the WGEC has noted in its report that the achievement over the next five years is significantly linked to collaborations with several

other stakeholders.

“Although the resources are inadequate, the importance of collaborative engagement is one of the key learnings which the Commission has thrived on,” the organisation said.

The WGEC is a pivotal stakeholder in the promotion of social justice in Guyana, with the Commission being the constitutional national authority for the promotion of women and gender equality in Guyana.

“Along with the government, this mandate is also pursued by several other non-governmental and civil society agencies.

The plan, therefore, outlines a series of collaborative and strategic partnerships to support the efforts of the Commission,” the plan detailed.

Constitutionally, the mandate of the Commission is to promote national recognition and acceptance that women’s rights are human rights, as well as the respect for and protection, development and attainment of gender equality.

The WGEC advocates for gender justice within both the legislative and policy environment to increase equality in opportunities for women. With increased gender equality tied to increased Gross Domestic Product, a focus on gender and social justice is considered an important part of supporting the developmental economic trajectory Guyana is currently on.

Ultimately, this plan

serves as a roadmap for implementing the Commission’s vision to advance gender justice within a framework of social justice.

“This strategic plan is an indication that the Commission is committed to upholding the full rights of women in advocating gender justice. Our Commission looks forward to a Guyana where gender and social justice become a norm,” Chairperson Indra Chandarpal commented in the report.

Chandarpal is one of a total of 15 commissioners that oversee the work of the WGEC. Notwithstanding significant development, women in Guyana still face a considerable number of challenges in advancing in society.

“While significant progress has been made in Guyana, patriarchal norms, religion, social and cultural attitudes, and the challenging economic situation constitute obstacles to the achievement of full gender equality,” the report noted.

The plan consists of two primary objectives, along with five goals with clear outputs and outcomes, and is built around five pillars.

“The Commission has conducted internal self-assessment and consultations.

Hence this plan is shaped in part by our strengths and weaknesses as well as the expectations of our stakeholders. The strategic plan is being built around a framework for social justice. Gender justice is an integral part of this plan,” Chandarpal said.

The five pillars of the plan are access to justice; human rights; equity in economic development; participation in decision making on gender and social justice issues and access to health and social services. The pillars outlines how the Commission intends to execute its mandated functions over the next five years The plan also noted the need for institutional strengthening to build the capacity of the staff and commissioners and capacity building.

The exuberant season of Easter is upon us. I join in extending blissful greetings to all Guyanese as we welcome the commencement of Easter.

For Christians, Easter radiates hope and happiness.

Christians believe that Christ

was crucified, died and was buried,but that he rose from the dead.

Christ’s resurrection goes to the very core of Christianity, and it is therefore central to the Christian faith. It is a time when they gather to reflect on the life and guiding principles of Jesus Christ.

This guidance is found

in the Church. I believe that the Church plays an integral part in any society.

In the development of any society, the Church is a solid foundation on which important principles rest.

Principles of justice, peace, tolerance, patience, obedience, faith, and hope,

all rest on the foundation of the church, and it is the church that must demonstrate the strength of this foundation.

At this special time, when Christians rejoice in the Risen Christ, the message of Easter continues to bring hope and warmth to our hearts.

The Easter message reminds us that though life has its ups and downs, hope is never extinguished, and life’s joys always return.

Worthy of note is that the Easter weekend activities celebrate our oneness.

The joy of Easter is to be found in families coming together in the company of friends, and in the smiles and happy faces of Guyanese.

Easter brings us together and it brings out the best in all of us.

Easter is a jubilant period in our country. It is a special time for families and friends: kite-flying, outdoor picnics, family get-togethers, the Bartica Regatta and the Rupununi Rodeo all form part of our traditional observances and a fun-filled Easter weekend.

Over the past two years, Easter activities were severely curtailed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, this year’s Easter finds us in better shape.

Normalcy and recovery

are slowly returning.

The pews of our Churches will be filled this year; families will gather together, kites will once again take to the skies, and Guyanese will return to the open areas for their traditional Easter funfilled activities.

Amidst all the happiness that Easter brings, let us remain careful and responsible in all that we do.

Let us also be mindful of our brothers and sisters, especially those who may be experiencing difficult circumstances.

Let us be the shoulder upon which they can rest their cares; the arms that embrace them in love; the hand that reaches out to support them; and the smile that reminds all that life’s joys and gifts are always meant to be shared.

So, as we celebrate today, in faith, in belief, and in hope, let us renew our spirits.

Let us renew ourselves and our commitment to each other, to the church, to our communities, and to humanity.

And my prayers are that, together, we can accomplish the task of fulfilling our mandate in this earthly place, and leaving a legacy that those who come after us find inspirational.

It is foremost a very sacred time for Christians

across the world marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Easter also provides many pertinent lessons for all humanity through its teachings of tolerance, humility, love and respect for others, while offering an abundance of hope that one will rise despite being confronted with insurmountable challenges.

It is that hope that gives meaningful purpose to all

mankind for both personal and societal advancement.

On this auspicious occasion, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) takes this opportunity to extend Easter greetings to all Guyanese, especially our brothers and sisters within the Christian community both here and in the diaspora.

At this time, our party urges reflection on the sig-

THERE is a buzzing in the air, a familiar humming.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

No, it’s the sound of a “caddy ole punch” dancing with the April winds, indicating that Easter is once again upon us.

Growing up, there were three festivals that I was always anxious to celebrate: Mashramani, Christmas and Easter. But over the past two years the festivities to which I have grown accustomed to enjoying were hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, this year, as the country moves into

It was either the easy way out or I’d make my own kite, ripping the pages of exercise books and “stealing” the pointers from my grandmother’s broom along with her spools of thread from her trusty sewing kit.

A n d n o t f o rg e t t i n g butchering pieces of my clothing to make a tail for my kite; this often got me into trouble and I’m sure many of you can relate.

Outside of kite flying,

meant there were fewer chances of our kites getting entangled with someone else’s, which can often be frustrating.

We would return to our home in the wee hours of the afternoon, exhausted and very much sun- burnt, but always contented and happy and still filled with much energy to do it all again the next day.

EASTER AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE Easter, though having a deep religious significance, is traditionally a day for family outings in Guyana.

It is a day when the beaches and open spaces are crowded with kite-flyers.

A family stops to purchase a kite On the days leading up to Easter, several church services are held.

WE OUTSIDE! It is a well-known tradition for Guyanese/Caribbean people to fly kites on and around Easter Day. The seawalls, playfields and local parks attract thousands of kite flyers, picnickers and vendors. And after a two-year hiatus, I’m excited to see Guyanese celebrating Easter in all its glory. So, I’d like to reminisce on the glorious memories I made in the previous years before COVID-19.

I’ve always looked forward to having picnics with my family. Every Easter Monday, my cousin and I would get well dressed in our best floral dresses and set up a small tent to shelter us from the sun or rain.

With a bag packed with goodies to eat and drink on one shoulder and our kites in the one hand, we would make our way to the Victoria seawall, which is a short walking distance from our home. Sometimes we would head to the seawall from as early as 07:00hrs.

We often came out this early to catch the “morning breeze” and also because it was less crowded, which

Caribbean Easter Celebrations Have No Bounds or Boundaries!

FROM Good Friday to Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Monday, the Christian world’s longest holy holiday weekend is many things to different people: a celebration of a resurrection, an extended holy day, or another universal holiday that touches everyone everywhere, believers or not.

Like everywhere else, it’s also forever been an integral part of West Indian and Caribbean culture from the day Christopher Columbus opened the way 532 years ago for bishops to bless Europe’s invasion and genocidal destruction of centuries of American civilization and replacement of First People’s religions with Christian crosses.

Every Caribbean generation has grown up observing the Lenten season, from Ash Wednesday to the long, holy holiday weekend from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

The 14 Stations of the Way of the Cross were followed annually at ‘The Calvary’ along Calvary Road in Castries Saint Lucia until 2019; and special Easter eats -- from Hot Cross Buns and Porridge in Guyana to Easter Eggs and Bunny Cakes in Barbados to crusty ‘Penapice’ (Penny-a-Piece) in the 21st Century French-speaking colonies in the Caribbean and South America…

In South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal region, 450 deaths from unprecedented floods left thousands of families mourning while searching for missing souls and in The Philippines over 150 deaths were also recorded from bad weather, Christians observing Easter outside destroyed homes while churches still standing became shelters.

In Palestine, over 150 Palestinians and Jews were injured at the Al Aksa Mosque as annual Israeli police intervention left blood flowing from Christians and Muslims following the Way of the Cross on the Second Sunday of the Holy Month of Ramadan, while Jews broke bread to welcome the Passover.

No sign of Easter in Ukraine, however, where the grim reality of 21st Century warfare is baring its face worse than any army of Grim Reapers through main-

stream and social media manipulation and weaponization of minds with grim reminders by the minute of what can happen when matters prevail over minds.

But none of the above in the Caribbean this Easter, where the usual confluence of beliefs and community of believers have seen a mosque and a synagogue coexist in Suriname for ages, or in Guyana where Christian holidays (such as Hindu and Muslim) are national celebrations across religion and culture, ethnicity and politics.

While religion and politics continued clashing in and over Ukraine, Caribbean Christians were this year mourning the loss of the Easter they knew, following the sudden death of congregations from COVID protocols and forced adjustment to the virtual reality of online services.

Easter 2022 came the Caribbean’s way just as impatience from two years of COVID Fatigue started giving way to relaxation and removal of protective protocols, despite World Health Organization (WHO) warnings that new, faster-spreading Omicron variants such as BA.1, BA.2, BA.3 and BA.4 were making Delta look like child’s play and causing new infections worldwide by the millions.

Indeed, the BA.1 variant was confirmed in Barbados on Good Friday, just as neighbouring Saint Lucia was softening entry protocols for visitors and returning nationals and fast-forwarding returns to authorised mass-crowd gatherings, from carnivals and street parties to house parties by the hundreds -- and huge 10-dollar Easter weekend dancehall sessions upstairs the Castries Market, shattering the long COVID silence with

booming sounds from multiple DJs. Kite-flyers in Barbados all weekend braved being charged for not observing masking and mass- crowd protocols.

A video of a giant kite in hands of inexperienced flyers crashing down on onlookers became an instant laugh for seasoned Guyanese tropical aeronautic fliers at Hope Estate’s East Coast beachfront and near Georgetown’s Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Never mind Christians being unable to flock to churches in some places, every Caribbean person finds a way to celebrate Easter and 2022 was no different -- except food and fuel prices hitting everyone equally but in different proportions, as few baked, cooked or drove less, just to save money or energy.

Same in UK and USA, where despite respective record 30-year and 40-year inflation rates, having taxed pockets and pocketbooks were not enough to prevent hundreds of charities from raising millions in Ukraine’s name.

And in the midst of it all, elderly Caribbean citizens who’ve weathered storms and hurricanes, volcanoes and earthquakes, floods and fires and lived to tell the tales, are quietly reminding those reacting to incessant, repeated images of the destruction of war on their screens to “never forget how happy and lucky we are…”

Pak, Paques or Pasqua, Easter by whatever name in any language, is a wholesome holiday celebration by Caribbean citizens at home and abroad which, like Christmas, Phagwah and Eid, is similarly observed in many different ways, with abundant joy from adopted and adapted features.

Major plans in the pipeline - Minister Indar says during for Albouystown meeting with community residents

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, sharing kites to the children of Albouystown (DPI) PRESIDENT, Dr. Irfaan Ali, will soon announce major developmental plans for the Albouystown community, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, has said.

Minister Indar made this announcement during a meeting in the community on Saturday, after residents raised a

number of issues affecting the community.

“There is something significant planned for this area that the President himself will announce… I will defer that to the President, but you do not worry about works and so, that will come here, do not worry about it,” Minister Indar said.

Some of the issues raised included the need for better roads, a safe space for children to utilise, and street lights for better security.

With that, the minister further said that he, along with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson, will soon be hosting an outreach in the community.

This is not a full outreach. I just came to give some kites and some of the elder folks some hampers for the Easter weekend. I am coming back with Minister Ramson to do

The minister also committed to installing street lights in the community, but also called on residents to keep an eye out for persons who would want to vandalise them.

A commitment was also

made by Minister Indar to donate sports gear to the “Pace and Power” boxing gym in the community which has 25 members.

Following the meeting, Minister Indar distributed a number of food hampers to the elderly, and kites to the children for the Easter holiday.

Palm Sunday reminds us of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Good Friday reminds us of His brutal treatment, culminating in crucifixion.

Easter Sunday reminds us of Jesus rising from the dead.

Each of the Christian gospels explains the purpose for which Jesus came into the world.

In John 3:16, Jesus himself tells of God’s love and concern for mankind. Not only does God say He loves us, but He has demon-

strated that love by sending Jesus with the express purpose of sacrificing His life, so that mankind might be redeemed.

It is the Christian’s belief that the blood of Christ shed on a cross at a place called “Calvary” is the full price for man’s redemption.

Christians also believe that beyond the suffering and the horrors of crucifixion, they can still rejoice in the glory of His resurrection and His triumph over the grave.

May this glorious season, therefore, remind us all of God’s love for us, of Jesus’ sacrifice, and our responsibility to love and show sincere concern for our fellow humankind.

Happy Easter and God bless our nation.

Over the years, Easter is widely associated with kite-flying, an activity that is popular and engaged in by

Guyanese of all faiths.

This national celebration can be considered as yet another activity that goes to strengthen national unity along the way of consolidating our nationhood.

On this occasion, the Guyana Agricultural and

General Workers Union (GAWU) is pleased to send special wishes to that substantial portion of its membership who are Christians.

Many of them will have to face up, together with their colleague workers, to the reality that Easter this

year will be observed, but not without concerns over the loss of jobs or the threat to employment that hangs over their heads.

Moreover, their plight today is worsened by various economic pressures, tax burdens, and erosion of standards that are also part of today’s reality.

One of the abiding messages associated with Easter is that of hope.

In our challenging times, that message strengthens the resolve of workers and those suffering from burdens that their struggles and sacrifices for betterment will win out.

Let the Easter period keep our hopes alive and undaunted by the adversities in our steady march to a satisfying future.

Spence Jr stops Ugás to set up four-belt showdown with Crawford

ERROL Spence Jr took a few rounds to find his rhythm and range after a long layoff. In the end, he had another championship belt.

Spence became a threebelt welterweight champion by defending his WBC and IBF titles in a unification bout in front of a home crowd, when his fight against Yordenis Ugás was stopped in the 10th round Saturday night because of the WBA champ’s right eye that was almost completely swollen shut.

“I think when the fight first started, I was kind of impatient,” Spence said.

“Later rounds, when I started setting my shots up, and placing my shots and picking my shots, and not throwing it hard, but letting them go, I was catching him a lot and working him down. I felt him breaking down, because he wasn’t throwing like he usual does.”

The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, but 1:44 into

the 10th, referee Laurence Cole sent Ugás to a corner to have his eye checked out by a ringside doctor for the second time. Unlike two rounds earlier, when the fight was allowed to continue, it was stopped this time despite protests by Ugás.

Chelsea beat Palace to set up Liverpool FA Cup final CHELSEA set up a second Wembley meeting with Liverpool this season as they overcame Crystal Palace’s stubborn resistance to reach the FA Cup final.

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup final on penalties in February but Chelsea will have the chance for revenge as second-half goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount underlined their supremacy.

Unlike the first semi-final between Liverpool and Manchester City, chances were at a premium until substitute Loftus-Cheek, on for the injured Mateo Kovacic, broke the deadlock with a deflected shot after 65 minutes.

Palace had their opportunities, Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saving well from Cheikhou Kouyate in the first half, but they could not come back after Mount slipped a low finish beyond Jack Butland with 14 minutes left.

Third time lucky for Chelsea?

Chelsea have deservedly reached their third successive FA Cup final and will now hope to reverse recent history after losing the previous two to Arsenal and Leicester City.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has a remarkable record in reaching domestic and European finals since his appointment and Chelsea will be formidable opponents for Liverpool, who are in search of a historic quadruple.

Chelsea had to work had for their triumph but they showed patience, organisation and then quality to take control after half-time.

Chelsea may be surrounded by turmoil off the pitch amid the sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich, but a winning mentality persists on it and the players showed admirable powers of recovery following the disappointment of their Champions League quarter-final elimination by Real Madrid.

And if the EFL Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool earlier this season is anything to go by, the FA Cup equivalent will be a tightly-contested affair between two high-quality sides.

Palace on the right track

Palace manager Patrick Vieira and his players were understandably devastated at the final whistle but the Eagles’ performance here, and over the season as a whole, gives great cause for optimism.

Vieira has squad boast-

ing several emerging young talents playing attractive football, although they were required to show a more pragmatic side here as they contained Chelsea well until their former loanee Loftus-Cheek struck with an effort that took a slight deflection.

Defeat will hurt, but Vieira and Palace can nevertheless be delighted with the progress the club is making.

Almost 50 more coaches complete courses as CWI continues efforts to lift coasting standards

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has completed another coaching course, this time in Guyana, as it continues its programme to enhance the coaching standards across the region.

Following the recent courses in Barbados, CWI in conjunction with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) delivered two days of coaching courses to upskill, assess and accredit local coaches and coach de-

velopers at the CWI Competition Coaching (Level 1) stage of the West Indies Cricket Pathway.

A total of 46 participants took part in the face-to-face component of the course, following on from last month’s introductory online module delivered which explored the West Indies Cricket Pathway, the role of the coaches within it, coaching principles, and coaching styles.

“It is great to see such an emphasis on coach development locally and the young-

sters across Guyana will no doubt reap the benefits of having increased access to quality, contemporary coaches in the community,” CWI Coach Development Manager, Chris Brabazon said.

“The local coach developers, Colin Stuart and Julian Moore did a great job in facilitating the course alongside Brendon Ramlal and UWI Representatives, Keshava Ramphal and Ryerson Bhagoo.”

As part of CWI’s development and investment strategy

A total of 46 participants took part in the face-to-face component of the course to upgrade and upskill coaches across the region, further courses are being held for coaches in St Kitts and Nevis over this Easter weekend.

In its promise to lift coaching standards, over the past three years, CWI has delivered close to 600 new coaching certificates

across eight Caribbean countries, while 16 CWI Coach Developers have also been trained to deliver Level 1 Courses locally.

International Test umpire Joel Wilson PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Trinidadian Joel Wilson is keen to make a positive contribution to the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee on which he now sits as the Elite Panel Umpire.

The international umpire was appointed at the recent ICC Board Meeting in Dubai recently.

The 55-year-old said he welcomed the opportunity which he described as a significant step.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be selected by your peers to represent the fraternity on such an important committee,” said Wilson, currently the most experienced umpire in the West Indies.

“The committee is designed to improve all aspects of the game, particularly the rules, regulations, laws, and playing conditions. Over the next year, I look forward to working the other members of the committee in the attempt to improve all aspects of cricket … and I hope to make a more than positive impact.”

Wilson first officiated in international cricket in 2011. So far, he has stood in 28 Test matches, 75 One-Day Internationals and 39 T20 Internationals.

Rob Key named England’s Managing Director of Cricket

ROB Key was named as England’s new Managing Director of Cricket on Sunday. He takes over from Andrew Strauss who served as the interim managing director after England’s Ashes debacle.

The former England batter will take up the position on an immediate basis and also relinquish his role as one of Sky Sports’ commentators.

“Key will be responsible for the strategy behind the England Men’s cricket teams and the performance pathways leading into them. He will also take a key role as

“It is an absolute honour to take up this role. By Rawle Toney ANISHA Gibbons’ stranglehold on the Javelin event at the CARIFTA Games continued when the 17-year-old claimed Gold in the Girls U-20 on the penultimate day of the 49th edition in Kingston, Jamaica.

Gibbons, a student of the Bygeval Secondary School, in 2019, had won Guyana’s first Gold Medal in female Javelin at the CARIFTA Games since it started in 1972.

Bermuda women stun Guyana with late winner to qualify

HAMILTON, Bermuda, (CMC) – Bermuda’s women clinched a place in next year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games with a last-gasp winner over Guyana in a round-robin qualifier at the Flora Duffy Stadium on Saturday.

“We came in with a target of going harder today and I am so proud of the girls,” Kovin Moodley, the Bermuda coach, said.

“You come to a tournament and you obviously want to win every single game, and to be able to achieve that is icing on the cake.”

Bermuda went into the match knowing a win would see them through, having beaten Jamaica 2-1 in their opener on Thursday, and ultimately were equal to the task.

“They realised what was at stake and they had me on edge. I lost my voice and my heart was racing, but this is why we love sport,” Moodley added.

“It was a 0-0 game all the way up until the end and it was that counter-attack goal. Really exciting for us and we are off to the CAC Games.”
