By Rehana Ahamad THE Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce is currently pursuing a feasibility study intended to determine the economic and other impacts of establishing industrial estates/parks in Regions Two and 10.

The facilities are slated to be established in Kara Kara, Linden, Region 10 and Onderneeming, Essequibo, Region Two. According to subject minister Oneidge Walrond, the parks are intended to provide direct employment opportunities, thereby increasing economic activity and providing families and communities with much needed disposable income.

“The recommendation from the study is expected to determine the activities to be conducted, thereafter the cost for development of the estate or park will be estimated,” she noted.

Lowenfield wants joint litigation ruling on evidence that will be used to prosecute him

ATTORNEY-at-law Nigel Hughes, on behalf of his claimant, Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield, on Friday made an oral application before Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George, S.C, at the Demerara High Court, seeking to be listed as intended respondent in the case being tried to obtain evidence that will be used to prosecute him and others for alleged elections misconduct.

The matter at hand is

filed by the Commissioner of Police (ag), Nigel Hoppie, and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack, S.C. for Orders to obtain certified copies of the Statements of Poll (SoPs) and Statements of Recount (SoRs) from the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections that is currently lodged with the Registrar of the High Court, Sueanna Lovell.

The Chief Justice (ag), on January 18, 2021 had ordered that the SoRs and SoPs be lodged with the High Court for “safekeep-

The request for the documents to be lodged at the court was made by Attorneys-at-law Douglas Mendes, S.C., and Kashir Khan, who brought to the court’s attention that the Representation of the People Act allows for the Chief Elections Officer to destroy all elections documents after a 12-month period would have elapsed.

With several employees of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) being prosecuted with regard to their conduct during the March 2, 2020 polls, the DPP had advised and instructed the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to obtain certified copies of the SoPs and SoRs as part of

their investigations and gathering of evidence for presentation to the Court.

The employees at reference are Mr. Clairmont Mingo, GECOM’s District Four Returning Officer, who was charged with four counts of Misconduct in Public Office; Mr. Lowenfield, who was charged with three counts of Misconduct in Public Office, and three counts of Forgery; and Ms. Roxanne Myers, Deputy CEO, who was charged with two counts of Misconduct in Public Office.

Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C, subsequent to the hearing, took to Facebook to express his opinion that Lowenfield’s request to join the proceedings is “another attempt to block the SoPs from being made public”.

“At the hearing today, Mr. Nigel Hughes, appearing for Keith Lowenfield, indicated that he wishes to join the proceedings for the purpose of persuading the Court that the Statements of Poll should not be released,” Nandlall wrote on Facebook.

“In short,” he explained, “Mr. Lowenfield wants the High Court to prevent relevant and probative evidence against him from being made

available to the Prosecution in his criminal trial!!”

The Commissioner of Police and DPP had submitted, in their application to the Court, that the SoPs and SoRs are necessary for the fair hearing of the charges against the employees, as they constitute relevant evidence for the prosecution to prove the commission of the offences which are charged.

The Commissioner of Police, by common law and statute, particularly Section 50 of the Criminal Law (Procedure) Act, has the lawful right to collect and recover all documents and property which are relevant to the investigation and prosecution of any circumstance; however, the Registrar has informed him that she is unable to comply with his request without a Court Order.

She then went on to inform him that should he require access to said documents, he needed to obtain an Order of Court with specific directions directed to her. “Aside from that,” she said, “I cannot act outside the scope of the extant order.”

But the DPP and Commissioner of Police have reiterated, in their application to the High Court, that it is imperative for them to be afforded access to the

official copies of SoPs and SoRs, as the documents are relevant evidence to prove that the various employees committed the offences they are charged with.

While the documents can be easily obtained from the political parties, as they are in the public domain, the official ones lodged with the Court by GECOM would be best to dispel any doubts as to their authenticity.

“If the prosecution does not have these documents, the hearing of the charges instituted will be inordinately delayed, because hundreds of witnesses will have to testify, in their stead, in the charges instituted, causing the case not to be afforded a fair hearing within a reasonable time,” the DPP wrote in her affidavit in support of the application.

The Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C., Lovell, and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) are listed as respondents in the case.

Lowenfield is expected to serve affidavits supporting his application, on or before May 19, on the other parties involved, and the matter will be called up on May 24, for hearing of the argument in the case. w

PRIME Minister, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips on Friday urged 115 graduands of the Texila American University (TAU) to serve with the highest ethical standards, and to become leaders within the medical profession.

He made these statements during the feature remarks at the university’s eighth graduation ceremony, which was held virtually.

“Uphold the tenets of your Hippocratic Oath by operating with the highest ethical standards of your profession; build on your skill and character with honour and discipline…

Be the medical professional who exhibits trust, confidentiality and honesty at all times,” he charged.

At the event, 30 persons graduated with degrees in Medicine, 51 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and 32 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health.

Prime Minister Phillips urged the graduands to be the agents of change in the working world, and encouraged them not to be disheartened by the challenging realities of their professions.

“You will be challenged with burdensome work, long hours, and huge responsibilities, and,

if left unchecked, your diligence can lead to stress and burnout,” the PM said, adding: “Let not the realities be a downer of this shining moment; think of ways that your leadership can be transformative in your profession. Make changes in the lives of your colleagues and patients, and even in your environment.”

The senior government official noted that Guyana stands to benefit from the new batch of medical professionals, as the government seeks to enhance the health of all its citizens.

The Engine Of Growth

THE private sector is often regarded as the driver of economic growth within a country largely characterised as a free-market economy.

Entrepreneurs seek to invest in business ventures with the aim of providing goods or services for the benefit of their community, wherein it is determined that such demand exists.

As this business grows, the return on investment grows and, in turn, the contributions to the economy also grow. One of the fastest-growing sectors in Guyana is the emerging oil-and-gas sector. Since the discovery of oil in Guyana in 2015, many local companies have been taking advantage of the opportunities available to become a part of this venture. Some companies are offering training, supply of materials and equipment and are also interested in having their own dredging sites.

Another fast-growing sector is construction.

The current government has outlined many infrastructural developments to be done within the country with some projects already being committed to and initiated in 2020.

Some of these projects include the building of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge along with the Suriname-Guyana bridge, the wel-

coming of new, branded hotels in Guyana and improved accessibility within the country. Also, a number of house lots are set to be given out to future homeowners and many construction contractors are in line to benefit from these projects. Based on the above sectoral examples, it can be observed that private businesses are needed in order for the country to develop. The government depends on the private sector to provide the necessary labour force, machinery and equipment and expertise to take advantage of the many resourceful opportunities available.

The private sector provides the majority of jobs in a country and in turn, the creation of wealth. According to a labour force survey carried out in July 2018 by the Guyana Bureau of Statistics, 68 per cent of Guyana’s working population is employed by the private sector and 10 per cent are with the not-for-profit organisations. With the mentioned sectoral examples above, many jobs are expected to be created.

As jobs are created, more money will be earned which will be pumped back into the economy as purchasing power increases; standards of living are expected to increase. All the other sectors are also expected to grow, thus creating more jobs across the country for

Amanza Walton-Desir’s statement is regrettable Dear Editor,

It seems that there is no end in sight over the controversy created by Ms. Amanza Walton-Desir, a leading APNU+AFC Member of Parliament. Her caustic remarks that PPP/C supporters, who are mainly Indo-Guyanese, are mentally lazy and are not capable to think for themselves have opened deep wounds within the Indian communities throughout Guyana.

A lawyer by profession and as a loyal supporter of the APNU+AFC, Miss Desir should have been more sensitive to the divisive wounds on race.

For her to make such statement is not only inflammable, but such incendiary narrative has created turmoil between her proponents and her opponents in Guyana which remained a

racially divided country, especially during elections.

Instead of apologising for her comments, Ms. Desir has brazenly and shamelessly accused those who criticised her as acolytes of the PPP/C. Clearly, her statement is misguided and highly irrational.

My hope is that she would express her profound remorse to those who she has offended and will refrain from making such statements in future.

Ms. Desir ’s statement could alienate Indo-Guyanese support from APNU+AFC and jeopardise her rise as a young political star in the Coalition.

Most Guyanese are forgiving, so if she decides to apologise, I am almost certain that it would bring an end to the issue and kept her in good standing not only among Indo-Guyanese, but among the entire populace.

It is wise for her to do so.

No credible and decent person would support Ms. Desir injudicious and intemperate assertions; to do so

will simply cast them in the same mold as race-baiters.

Their support for her would only serve to worsen race relations in the country and precipitate more racial division between the two main races. That said, I would like to see the leaders of both parties put an end to this regrettable narrative. For more than 60 years, race-bait politics have divided the nation and I am hoping that it will come to an end sooner rather than later. It has stymied the country’s development and has dampened the spirits of our youths who are 65 per cent of the country’s population. We are in the 21st century and I must say that it pains my heart to see that our political leaders continue to saddle our youths with this type ethnic division as a political scheme to gain power.

Private enterprises contribute the majority of government revenues through company taxes, resource rents and employees’ income tax, all of which contribute back to the country’s development. According to the GRA, a sum of $225.99 billion was collected in 2019 in tax revenue, of which a major contributor was the oil-and-gas sector.

The private sector seeks to provide services that are in great need for a country to become developed and wealthy. Some of these include world–class health care services, along with high-level education that can be accessed within the country rather than having to leave Guyana.

Local entities seek to bring to the market products and services that are in great demand within the country and maximise the opportunities.

By doing this the economy grows and instead of having persons go abroad to study for years or have the best medical treatment and pour loads of cash into another developed economy, that cash can be used to improve Guyana’s own economy.

lic of Guyana Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, had mentioned that works are being done to have improved high levels of education provided at the University of Guyana in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, in the coming years. Guyana’s major economic sectors are the agriculture and mining sectors, which covers 70-75 per cent of the country’s export earnings. In 2019, according to the Bank of Guyana’s Annual Report, earnings from rice exports amounted to U.S.$222.7 million; sugar U.S.$27.8 million; bauxite U.S.$127.0 million; timber U.S.$33.7 million; and gold U.S.$876.6 million. These are all contributions of private entities. The government is dependent on the private sector in order to grow the economy. The government provides opportunities of which the private entities take maximum advantage and help to provide jobs; job security; increased domestic income; increased purchasing and spending power; increased foreign exchange; lower unemployment rates; decrease in crime rates; increased standards of living; and increase in the country’s GDP, which overall improves the economic flow within the country.

Mangroves removal unfortunate but development necessary Dear Editor,

Firstly, I should wish to welcome and congratulate Tristar for their bold and massive investment of 100-150 million US dollars in the construction and establishment of a Shore Base on the western side of the Demerara River, and to indicate the tremendous benefits the region will gain in jobs and developmental improvements. The Minister of Public Works’ intervention in the matter was instrumental in avoiding unnecessary delays to the project and laying out the alternatives that the contractors have, in building steel piling defence around the proposed site to avoid flooding and erosion in the absence of mangroves.

Tristar’s investment which now stands as the most significant to date, given its

current size will definitely shift the playing field with less costly logistics for oil and gas, which in the long run will reduce the burden the people of Guyana will have to face as currently experienced with Exxon or any other company that will be engaged in oil and gas exploration and production. Any logical thinking Guyanese can acknowledge that there has not been any significant investments made on that side of the Demerara River and as such, should welcome this venture. I am sure that as the project progresses, Tristar will be outlining their scope and plans of development and the positive impact it will have on the region and Guyana as a whole. The corridor from LaGrange to Vreed-en-Hoop promises to be the epicentre of commercial activities in the oil and gas sector with Tristar leading the way.

From the construction phase to the commencement of the shore base,

jobs and other related economic enterprises will mushroom and revitalise that area, reminiscent to the days when it was a hub of activities for the sugar and rice industries. We must express our pride of understanding that the owner of Tristar is a Guyanese entrepreneur who has taken on unprecedented risk of developing a port facility to handle extreme loading and logistics conditions which the oil and gas industry demands. The success of this port facility would be an overall win for Guyana, since we will not have to pay exorbitant costs in US dollars for each shipment of materials from our oil fields to Trinidad and back. While this is not the first, and definitely will not be the last time mangroves are cleared to facilitate development, though unfortunate, it is necessary.

Vic Persaud was an institution and giant in diplomacy Dear Editor,

I AM saddened to learn of the passing of Vic Eshwar Persaud (SN May 14). I always thought fondly of him and had queried about his health since I had not seen him for several years. He was a wonderful guy, a professional (protocol duties) in every sense of the term. He carried out instructions, but he also offered advice (on etiquette, decorum, attire, etc.) on how engagements should be conducted. These were largely accepted at ceremonies by his bosses.

Vic was a diplomat par excellence. He was a giant in that field with no comparison. He was an institution having meandered around all Presidents. He was very talented and experienced in protocol ceremonies. He was the best protocol officer in the country; off course, there were not many before or after him for a comparison. And he was held in high-esteem by politicians of all stripes.

The people of Port Mourant and Rose Hall who knew him were/are proud of his achievements.

Although we attended the same school (from different era) and were from neighbour-

ing villages (me Port Mourant) and he (Rose Hall), we did not meet during my youth. Or at least, I did not recall meeting him although I remember his family having a shop on the main road that I frequented when I was a student at Chandisingh High School. He is much older than me. I had occasion to meet Vic in Guyana during the Cheddi Jagan presidency and subsequently in New York during the Jagdeo presidency and several times thereafter in Guyana at social functions including at celebrations for India Republic Day and Holi. We exchanged ideas and thoughts about growing up in Port Mourant and governance.

In an introduction, he said he knew of me through the student strike at Chandisingh High School in 1976 and my voluminous writings since then. He remarked: “You are the chap who write in the papers and conduct polls. I always wanted to meet you. I thought of you being a much older person. Thank you for all the updates about Guyanese in America.”

Upon learning that I was from Ankerville, he asked and reminisced about older folks from Port Mourant who I knew since a little boy. I was amazed about the number of people he knew in Free Yard, Bound Yard,

Ankerville, and Haswell (Babu Jahan) including my father, several of my uncles and aunts, and neighbours. He said he used to visit Port Mourant frequently and knew the Jagans, who lived just a few streets from me.

While never partisan in his politics and not publicly showing a preference for one party over the other, Vic was an indefatigable supporter of democracy (free and fair elections and a free press). He saluted those of us in the diaspora who fought for the restoration of democracy in the homeland. “You all did great work for Guyana. We owe a debt of gratitude for helping to restore democracy in our homeland.”

Vic was disappointed with the governance of the Coalition and of the behaviour of Moses Nagamootoo and Khemraj Ramjattan, who he felt would have known better. The two were a let down to their and traditional PPP/C supporters. Privately, Vic condemned the racism that that he said was widely practiced. But as a diplomat, he opted to be silent.

Vic was saluted for his work by every president. He was honest and hardworking and conducted himself appropriately. He was very responsible in his behaviour even

when he had occasion to take a drink.

Protocol activities were hectic and can be very taxing both physically and mentally and energy draining, but Vic never complained.

He loved his work. And he was always cheerful with a signature bright smile. He was a serious and disciplined man when it came to duties, but he also had a sense of humour and had a laugh with guests and people he knew or he considered friendly enough, and he would take a drink with them. He loved Bollywood songs – old classical ones of yesteryear. He cracked a few jokes when we were in company as he liked to do. And he opened to me about politics since he took me in confidence. He was very witty, sociable, warm, and friendly. And he was not afraid to mix with friends and ground with the lower classes and people of all political persuasions. He had many, many friends including across the political aisle.

Vic would be sorely missed for his decency, reliability, honour, dignity, integrity, humility, and friendliness – qualities he practised every day on the job.

Our nurses are most vital and are truly treasured Dear Editor, I FULLY commiserate with our nurses for their feelings of insignificance and non-importance. This was conveyed in a recent letter that detailed their angst and sadness, when the occasion of International Nurses’ Day went almost unnoticed.

However, against this backdrop, I note here that the Department of Public Information, the government’s conduit for information dissemination, must be commended for doing its part on this special occasion.

On the very day, I read two messages, dealing with the nurses of our country.

Firstly, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) CEO’s (Brigadier Ret’d George Allan Lewis’) message on International Nurses Day 2021, was carried verbatim. This message extended “… an earnest ‘thank you’ to all the nurses at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), our satellite clinics and the Ocean View facility for the outstanding work that you continue to do, especially in these challenging times.” These times of course refer to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The message added that “I (the CEO) have witnessed daily, your steadfast commitment to ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care, and your strength in the wake of numerous adversities. Despite those challenges, you continue to lend your voice and abilities to the elevation of nursing practice within these institutions – you embody compassion and connected care.”

The CEO added that indeed “… many times your own (the nurses’) well-being and the well-being of your (the nurses’) families have not been the priority as you worked tirelessly in service to others. So, the CEO, on behalf of the Board of Directors and management team at the GPHC expressed the ever necessary ‘thank you’ for all of your efforts and for continuing to go the extra mile.”

Then the second message was from Sister Shivani Ramdihol, Assistant Director Nursing Services, who stated that “… the nursing leadership of the Georgetown Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is privileged to join with the international community, in honouring our nurses, as we celebrate International Nurses Day under the theme:

‘Nurses A Voice to lead - A vision for future health care.’”

Sister Shivani Ramdihol applauded the nurses for their dedication and commitment to service, noting that “Nurses and Midwives of the GPHC comprise more than 50 per cent of the health workforce and are therefore essential to the delivery of quality health care.”

She declared that all “… are conscious of the many challenges you face as you embrace the daily tasks.”

Booster programme launched to help NGSA pupils

The programme is scheduled to be aired from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 10:30am and 3:30pm, and rebroadcasted between 5 and 7pm every day.

Pupils can also tune in to the channel on Saturdays and Sundays, for another rebroadcast from 9am to 5pm.

The ministry had announced that some 14,000 pupils are expected to sit the examination on August 4 and 5.

The NGSA will include Papers One and Two, as per normal, but the tests will be set based on a 20-week consolidated curriculum that the ministry has developed to fit the ongoing situation, where the pupils remain out of school.

Additionally, the pupils will be getting two mock examinations prior to the NGSA sitting.

FORMER Commissioner of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC), Trevor Benn, who served under the former A Partnership For National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) administration, was, on Friday, slapped with a third charge of misconduct in public office.

He appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, to answer to the charge which read that between October 1, 2018 and August 31, 2020, in his capacity as Commissioner of the GL&SC, he allegedly wilfully misconducted himself by executing a sale of a parcel of land located at Le Repentir, Georgetown to Cevons Waste Management Inc. in the sum of $80 million, knowing that at the time he did not have the authority to do so.

The charge further al-

leged that the said wilfully conducted act amounted to a breach of the public trust, without any excuse or reasonable justification. Benn was not required to plead to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

He was represented by attorneys-at-law, Mark Waldron and Keoma Griffith. The matter was adjourned to June 18, 2021.

In February this year, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, S.C. wrote to Morse Archer, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cevons Waste Management Inc., instructing him to vacate the said land or face legal proceedings.

It was discovered that Benn purported to issue a lease for the land to Cevons Waste Management Inc. for a term of 50 years; however, the land is owned by the National Sports Commission (NSC), a body corporate established by virtue of the National Sports Commission Act 1993, which is

separate from GL&SC.

HAS NO AUTHORITY Nandlall had further highlighted in his letter that Benn did not possess lawful authority to promise to sell the lands to Cevons Waste Management Inc. as that authority is vested with the President.

“The power to sell State lands resides with the President by virtue of Section 3 (1) of the State Lands Act, Chapter 62:01 and was never delegated to the former Commissioner,” the Attorney-General wrote.

Archer had previously said that his company followed all guidelines and legal procedures in the purchase of a plot of land that the Government is now seeking to repossess. He had expressed hope for a resolution void of any legal showdown.

The CEO had said that the land was purchased from the GL&SC in 2018 for $100M of which $80M has already been paid. He explained that

as per the written agreement with GL&SC, he was told that the transport for the land will take three years to be transferred and once that was done, the remaining $20M would be paid.

Archer had also highlighted that he received a Government evaluation for the land, putting the value at $47M. He said despite this when he approached the Commission, he was told he had to pay $100M. OTHER CHARGES This is the third misconduct in public office charge Benn is being slapped with over a short period of time.

On April 21, he appeared before Senior Magistrate, Sherdel Isaac-Marcus, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a similar charge and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

That charge pertained to the sale of two parcels of land– 4,725 and 4,805– all being a portion of Plantation

Ruimveldt, to Wilfred Brandford, a former member of the Board of Directors of the GL&SC, who was serving in the position at the time of the transaction. The charge stated that the parcels of land were sold to Brandford for $13.5 million, when the land was initially valued at a sum of over $60 million.

Then, on March 12, Benn was released on $200,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a misconduct charge which was laid in connection with the alleged illegal leasing of State lands.

That charge alleged that between January 1, 2018, and March 31, 2020, while being a public officer, the Commissioner of GL&SC, he wilfully misconducted himself by causing the sum of $27 million to be paid by JANICO Industrial Engineering Limited for the lease of six acres of land at Plantation Ogle, East Coast Demerara.

It was also alleged that

Seven awarded for ‘My impressions of India’ essays

AS India celebrates its 75th Independence Anniversary, the High Commission of India in Guyana has embarked on a series of commemorative events, one of which was an Essay-Writing Competition which concluded on Thursday with a prize-giving exercise.

The competition, which ran from March to April, facilitated writings from three categories – the primary school level, the high school level and the college

level and above.

In total, the competition attracted seven winners across the three categories; on Thursday, those persons were awarded cash prizes, gifts and certificates by High Commissioner, Dr K J Srinivasa, during a simple ceremony at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.

‘Two Colours’ constitutional motion dismissed –– 33 months awaiting retrial not unreasonable, court says HIGH Court Judge, Navindra Singh, on Thursday, ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, to present the indictment of the State against murder accused Lennox Wayne for retrial within the next 30 days.

The judge made this pronouncement while dismissing a constitutional motion filed by Wayne, who was seeking a permanent stay of the case against him.

Wayne is currently on remand, awaiting a retrial for the murder of cosmetologist, Ashmini Harriram, who was shot, execution style, moments after disembarking a minibus not far from

her Lusignan, Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara home on July 10, 2014.

The case was first tried in 2017 before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow and a 12-member jury at the Georgetown High Court, but ended in a hung jury.

Justice Barlow subsequently ordered a re-trial, and the matter was listed to be heard during the January 2021 session of the Demerara Assizes.

Wayne’s co-accused, Melroy Doris, has since pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to five years.

In his constitutional motion against the State, Wayne sought an order admitting him to bail, pending the hearing and

determination of his application, and a permanent stay of proceedings for the murder charge against him.

According to Wayne, his right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time as guaranteed by the provisions of Article 144 of the Constitution has been infringed. He is also seeking damages to the tune of $100,000 for the breach of his fundamental rights.

Justice Singh, in handing down his ruling on Friday, found that Wayne’s constitutional right to a fair trial within a reasonable time has not been infringed.

He further noted that a period of 33 months for a retrial is not unreasonable given the scores of other

Regarding his claim of a breach of fundamental rights, the judge noted that in January 2021, the DPP was prepared to pro-

ceed with the trial against Wayne but he had indicated his willingness to plead guilty to manslaughter.

The judge stressed this is diametrically opposed to Wayne’s claim that his right to a trial within a reasonable time has been infringed, particularly when he shortly thereafter instituted his motion before the court.

The judge dismissed Wayne’s constitutional motion and ordered him to pay $200,000 in costs to the Attorney General.

Justice Singh further ordered the DPP to present the murder indictment against Wayne within 30 days of his ruling.

The Guyana Chronicle had reported that it was alleged that Wayne was

the triggerman while Doris was the taxi driver who drove Wayne to the scene of the crime to execute Harriram.

It is also alleged that following the act, Doris reportedly transported Wayne back to the city where the victim’s phone was handed over to one of the two persons who contracted the duo to carry out the murderous act for a price tag of $2.5 million.

The two men were reportedly contracted by the brother-in-law of the hairdresser and an accomplice who wanted her dead after they suspected that she had snitched on them.

They believed that it was she who informed the police of a drug operation they were engaged in, which resulted in the narcotics being seized.

New well for Wakenaam

A TEAM from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) will be mobilising in a month’s time to drill a new well on the island of Wakenaam, in Region Three, to provide improved water supply to some 4,752 residents.

According to a release, Chief Executive Officer of the GWI, Mr. Shaik Baksh and a technical team two Fridays ago visited the island with a view to identifying the site for the drilling. Several sites were visited, and the technical team has determined, based on hydraulic and modelling studies, that the site at Noitgedacht is the most suitable for the drilling of the new well.

The new well for the island will be the first to be drilled, using the drilling rig acquired by the company some two years ago for the drilling of wells on the coastland.

Shortly after assuming office in the latter part of 2020, Baksh had visited the island and found that

residents were experiencing a poor level of water supply for the past two to three years. This was attributed to low water production at the Free and Easy and Noitgedacht well stations. The wells, which are now over 45 years old, showed signs of structural degradation.

A GWI team soon thereafter cleaned and rehabilitated the wells to increase production. The rehabilitation has yielded success, with residents stating that they are mostly pleased with the service they are receiving.

Noitgedacht resident, Zorene Rupnaraine said that she is even able to have water in her elevated storage tank, and to wash her white clothing without their being stained. She also welcomed a new well on the island to further improve the water supply there.

Belle Plaine resident, Deonarine Oudall said he is satisfied with his level of service being offered.

GWI’s Mr. Shaik Baksh and technical officials examining a sample of water from the community In addition, Baksh explained that plans are in progress to construct a water treatment plant on the island within the next two years.

The residents were overjoyed at this news.

Charges expected for suspects in murder of Kuru Kururu bus driver CHARGES are expected in the new week for three suspects who were arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of minibus driver, Marcus Julius Thomas.

Thomas was killed at his Kuru Kururu Sandpit, Linden/ Soesdyke Highway residence on May 11.

The 39-year-old was slain by three men who invaded his home around 18:30 hrs.

The suspects who were nabbed in Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) are relatives of Thomas.

One police source said that they are awaiting response from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to proceed with charges.

Dead: Marcus Julius Thomas Reports indicated that Thomas’ relatives attempted to murder him in the past. One of the suspects had previously chopped him to the head and abdomen.

A report was made to the police but the individual was never arrested since he eluded capture.

Police said the sus-

pects are cooperating with them.

On Tuesday evening, Thomas had arrived home and decided to rest. Not long after his killers reportedly kicked open his door and barged in.

Neighbours reportedly recalled hearing loud noises and rumbling at his home.

A few minutes later they saw the suspects fleeing the scene. Shortly after, Thomas was seen staggering out of his house and calling out for help.

He was stabbed several times about the body and collapsed in his yard.

One resident said his attacker allegedly slit his throat and stabbed him about the body.

162 commence journey into army

ONE hundred and sixty-two recruits commenced training on the Basic Recruit Course (BRC) 2021-01 this week.

Addressing the opening ceremony for the course, Colonel General Staff, Julius Skeete, commended the new recruits for choosing to serve the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and their country.

“All good decisions must be supported and you need to support this decision you have taken to become soldiers in the Guyana Defence Force.

The decision you’ve made to become a soldier will not be such a good decision if you are unable to support it by being obedient,” he said.

Colonel Skeete also urged the recruits to give their full attention to the five main components of the training.

“The first component is fitness. You must be fit to be a competent soldier;

hence, the reason for all the running and doubling,” he said, adding that: “Secondly, is obedience. If you are unable to deliver the level of obedience required for a soldier, you will find that your days with the GDF will be limited, short-lived.

Third is loyalty. You have to be loyal to the GDF, to this uniform, to be amongst us you must be loyal. You cannot serve your army, the military and indeed this great nation of ours if you are disloyal,” he made clear.

Colonel Skeete emphasised too that discipline was an imperative.

“You have to be disciplined to be a soldier in any army anywhere in the world. And finally, skills: the modules taught during this course teach you the skills necessary to be useful soldiers when you graduate,” he noted.

Nineteen-year-old Armando Singh, who is undergoing training on the course, said his desire to enlist stemmed from seeing his father in uniform and listening to him recount stories of life as a

serviceman.

“I’m ecstatic! My friend told me that the GDF was recruiting and I am grateful that I passed the various requirements to enlist. Spending time as an apprentice at Band Corps only aided in increasing my love and confidence that a military career is what I want to dedicate myself to achieving,” he said.

Another recruited for training, Wendell Osborne, 20, who hails from the Essequibo Islands, expressed gratitude and said that his

success in passing the requirements to be selected for training was God answering his prayer.

“This is my first job.

My humble upbringing saw me working as an uncertified IT Technician in order to assist my mother financially.

Then the pandemic hit, and I had to rethink my life and future. My cousin, who is a soldier, advised me to enlist and lauded the many opportunities to grow, earn and learn. I’m happy that I heeded his advice and acted on it,” he said.

The BRC is designed to regiment civilians, teaching them the skills needed to become Private (PTE) soldiers.

During the 12-week course, the recruits will be trained in Skill-atArms, Drills (individual and group), Physical Training, Field Craft, Internal Security, Map Reading and Navigation, Open and Close Country Warfare, National Policy, Chief-of-Staff Orders for Opening Fire, and the Values and Standards of the GDF.

87 Region 2 frontline workers fully vaccinated against COVID-19

SCORES of frontline workers in Region Two who took the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine on February 18, turned up at various health centres on Wednesday to take the second dose.

The 87 workers include doctors, nurses and other categories of healthcare professionals who are attached to various departments across the region, such as the laboratory, maternity, isolation, and the quarantine Unit. Those on the COVID-19 Task Force also took the vaccine.

The second dose completes the vaccine process for the workers and will help to prevent serious illness if they contract the virus.

Regional Health Officer, Dr. Ranjeev Singh, who was among those taking the second shot, said the vaccination process went smoothly. He said that it was just a prick and that he was not experiencing a lot of discomfort.

Dr. Singh said to date, over 500 of the region’s frontline workers have received their first dose of the vaccine. He said most of them are nearing time to take the second dose. He urged them to complete the vaccination process by visiting the health centres on the dates given to them.

He used the opportunity to congratulate all the workers who came forward to be vaccinated and also encouraged all those who haven’t taken the jab to do so. Dr. Singh emphasised that the region

Medex Renota Singh, Nurse Shonette Jonas and Cedella Frazer of the National COVID-19 Task Force accompanied the first set of vaccines from Georgetown to the region on February 17.

The vaccine is available to all Guyanese 18 years and over. It stimu-

lates the immune system and causes it to produce protection in the form antibodies. It is injected into a muscle and is given in two doses. The second dose is given 12 weeks after the first injection and according to the Ministry of Health, persons must return for their second dose to be fully vaccinated.

The ministry has advised that although frontline workers are taking the vaccine, it is important that they continue to adhere to all COVID-19 precautions especially wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, cleaning hands and surfaces regularly and keeping a distance of six feet.

Persons are also advised to self-isolate and book a test if experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.

Henrietta man dies days after lash to head

AFTER battling for his life for almost one week, 24-year-old Kurt Elvis Stephney, on Thursday, succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Stephney of Henrietta, Essequibo, died around 1:00 hrs while receiving treatment for a fractured skull.

According to reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle, on May 6, the man and another resident were at a popular snackette on the public road when they got into a heated argument over a Dead: Kurt Stephany pack of biscuits.

Police said Stephany attacked the suspect with a piece of wood. However, the suspect managed to disarm Stephney and used the same piece of wood to lash him to the head. The suspect reportedly told investigators that he acted in self-defence.

Stephney was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state and later transferred to the GPHC. Meanwhile, a post mortem examination performed by Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, on Thursday, revealed that he died as a result of a fractured skull.

The suspect is presently in police custody.

Two more COVID-19 deaths take May’s toll to 36 THE Ministry of Health, on Friday, reported that as of Thursday, May 13, two more persons who had tested positive for COVID-19 have succumbed to the deadly virus.

The two men, aged 69 and 70, from Regions Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice) and Four (Demerara-Mahaica), respectively, both died while receiving medical care at a Ministry of Health facility.

Their death pushes the toll for May to 36, and the overall number from the onset of the pandemic in Guyana to 335. This figure has been reflected in the Ministry’s daily COVID-19 dashboard for May 14.

In addition to these statistics, the Ministry of Health has recorded 143 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,364 tests carried out for May 13, 2021.

From that total, Region One (Barima-Waini) recorded one; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam),

two; Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 30; Region Four, 55; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), six; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), seven; Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni), one; Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), 35, and Region Ten, six.

The newly infected persons include 68 males and 75 females.

Presently, 14 persons occupy the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 113 are in institutional isolation, 1,682 are isolated at home, and nine are

institutionally quarantined.

Of Guyana’s 14,988 confirmed cases since the arrival of COVID-19 in March 2020, 1,818 are currently active, while 141 of the 12,834 recoveries were recorded within the past 24 hours.

New FAO office commissioned at Agriculture Ministry’s LBI Complex –– ‘space would enable us to be more effective and efficient,’ says FAO Country Rep.

THE Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) secretariat in Guyana commissioned a new office on Friday at the Ministry of Agriculture’s La Bonne Intention (LBI) Complex.

During the commissioning exercise, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha said that the new office demonstrates the government’s commitment to working with international partners to develop the sector.

“This new office is another act to demonstrate

our commitment to working and collaborating with our international partners to develop the sector. We’ve been working very closely with our international partners, and you can testify to the gains we’ve been making in agriculture,” Minister Mustapha said, adding: “Guyana is once again taking its rightful place in the region, in terms of pushing the agriculture agenda and food security.

Guyana has a history and a legacy for pushing agriculture in the Caribbean and CARICOM; our former

president developed the ‘Jagdeo Initiative’ that was adopted by CARICOM. Those points are still relevant today; our current president has put forward a document to advance the agriculture agenda and food security in the Caribbean that was recently adopted by the CARICOM Heads of Government. As a result of that, a ministerial taskforce was developed that is being chaired by Guyana, and I am very optimistic that with the help of the FAO and other partners, we can develop a strategy to

advance our food security agenda and work to resolve the issues of food insecurity in the Caribbean.”

Minister Mustapha also said that government will continue to push the agriculture agenda in the Caribbean, and that it will continue to support international organisations like the FAO. He said that both the ministry and the government look forward to the FAO’s cooperation, guidance and input to push the agriculture agenda in the region.

FAO’s Country Representative, Dr. Gillian Smith said that the new space will not only provide an enabling environment for its staff, but also support the kind and quality of work required of the agency here.

“The ministry has consented and provided us

with this new office space.

We’ve been able to create a space that, I believe, is very good for the staff, and provides us with enough comfort, so that we can be more effective and efficient in what we are doing,” Dr Smith said. “The Government of Guyana has provided, through the host country agreement with FAO since 2007, a space for us to operate,” she said.

Importantly, as a UN agency, we have been embedded with the Ministry of Agriculture, which is probably the closest and most important partner that we have in the Government. Ever since we’ve been in Guyana, the FAO has been looking at how we can support and expand what the Government is doing, and what the people

of Guyana are doing in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural development.

This building will help us to support and provide the kind of work and the quality of work required

by Guyana.

It is also a recognition of the importance that Guyana is increasingly playing in the Caribbean and it provides an opportunity for us to provide the kind of support that Guyana needs as it pursues its development agenda,” she added.

The LBI complex also houses some of the Ministry of Agriculture’s other agencies, such as the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (New GMC), and the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

Man gets 18 months for stealing cash from uncle DOMET Ernest was on Friday sentenced to 18 months in prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after admitting that he stole $700,000 from his uncle.

Ernest pleaded guilty to the larceny charge during an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the particulars of the charge, he, on May 6, 2021, at Fine Diamond Landing, Cuyuni River, stole the money from Kenrick Williams, who’s his uncle.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question, Williams, his wife and Ernest were “having a few drinks” at the location mentioned in the charge, and when the couple realised they’d had enough, they retired to bed.

Ernest, on realising that his aunt and uncle were intoxicated, seized the opportunity to take the money and flee to Georgetown.

On his return to Imbaimadai, sometime later, he was contacted by police, arrested and subsequently charged.

The ministry will be looking to see what assistance it can give as it relates to concerns about a safe venue.

Singh, also Programme Coordinator of the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities, will play a huge role in helping the ministry determine the way forward regarding new efforts for persons with disabilities.

“It was a very, very productive meeting and I was actually taken aback with the minister’s vision for disability. It’s clear and in sync with what we want so I am optimistic and very excited to work along with this ministry,” Singh expressed following the meeting, adding that Minister Persaud is very practical about the way things are done.

Singh was able to share his ideas on programmes that the ministry wants to roll out for teenagers, young adults, and those in the disability community who may not have had access to any formal training.

Meanwhile, as Blindness Awareness Month is being observed in May, President of the Guyana Society for the Blind, Cecil Morris, said mainly virtual activities are planned, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, he called attention to the issue of security for the members of the society and noted that a number of blind persons have been robbed over the past few months, both in

the compound and while on their way into the compound. “This security issue has been an ongoing one with no concrete solution from the authorities. The area is known to have a lot of thieves,” he pointed out.

Explaining some of the other issues at the society, Morris said for the past two years, the building floods even when there is limited rainfall. Also, the sewerage system that is connected to the building is blocked and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) field workers are unable to find the blockage or the plan for the area. As a result, there is constant back up of waste materials.

Additionally, vagrants and other citizens use the area, mainly the driveway to the compound, as a dumpsite, and yet another issue is the absence of adequate funding to manage the organisation and provide services to the membership.

The Guyana Society for the Blind is a national organisation of and for the blind and is governed by an act of Parliament. The organisation has been in existence since 1953 at its present location and has been providing services to the blind community in various areas.

The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD), on the other hand, is a collaborative forum which was established in January 2008 and is made up of representatives of different organisations for persons with disabilities.

Its members meet regularly to support each other with the objective of building a stronger disability movement in Guyana.

Critics of Tokyo Olympics submit petition urging cancellation

By Kiyoshi Takenaka, Ju-min Park and Sakura Murakami TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) - Critics of Japan’s plan to hold the Tokyo Olympics despite a fourth wave of coronavirus infections submitted a petition yesterday signed by 350 000 people over nine days calling for the Games to be cancelled.

“Stop Tokyo Olympics” campaign organiser Kenji Utsunomiya said the global festival of sport - already postponed from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic - should take place only when Japan can welcome visitors and athletes wholeheartedly.

“We are not in that situation and therefore the Games should be cancelled,” he told a news conference. “Precious medical resources would need to be diverted to the Olympics if it’s held.”

The petition was submitted to the Olympic and Paralympic committee chiefs as well as Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike.

It came as Japan added three more areas to a state of emergency now covering Tokyo, Osaka and four other prefectures amid surging case numbers, exactly 10 weeks from the scheduled July 23 opening of the Games.

Asked about the campaign against the Games, Tokyo Governor Koike said she would work towards a “safe and secure” Olympics.

“Though there is a global pandemic, it is important to hold a safe and secure Tokyo 2020 Games,” she told a regular news conference.

The new areas under the state of emergency include Hokkaido prefecture, where the Olympic marathon will take place, after it reported a record high of 712 new coronavirus cases on Thursday.

Nationwide, Japan has seen about 656 000 confirmed cases, with 11 161 deaths.

Opposition to the Games has also come from doctors, while some high-profile Japanese athletes have expressed concern, including Masters golf champion Hideki Matsuyama and top women’s tennis player Naomi Osaka.

Business leader Masayoshi Son, chief of SoftBank Group Corp, added his voice to the chorus of trepidation on Thursday, saying in unusually blunt

remarks he was afraid of what might happen if the Games went ahead.

Dozens of towns that had been due to host visiting athletes at pre-Games events have cancelled those plans, saying they could not guarantee medical help amid strains on the health system.

HUGS ‘NOT OK’ Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, asked whether the Games would go ahead despite the increase in COVID cases, said organisers were looking to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) backing for the Games.

“I am aware that many are concerned that it will lead to an outbreak of cases,” Nishimura told parliament.

“The organisers are currently working together closely, based on the decision by the International Olympic Committee to hold the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” he said.

Organisers are determined to host the Games with coronavirus mitigation measures in place. A skateboarding event on Friday was the latest test for their precautions.

Organisers told reporters after the event that athletes and coaches had been told to follow measures and avoid the usual celebratory hugs and cheers on the sidelines.

“This kind of behaviour is not OK in terms of COVID-19 measures,” said Yasuo Mori, the deputy executive director of Tokyo 2020’s operations bureau.

“We’d usually take videos together but now we have to stay masked and two metres apart,” said skateboarder Ryuto Kikuta, 17, adding that he understood the measures were necessary but they still felt strange.

Spectators will not be allowed in from abroad, while a decision on Japanese-based spectators has yet to be made.

With the latest emergency measures, 19 out of Japan’s 47 prefectures fall under restrictions that include closures of eateries by 20:00hrs. and a ban on alcohol at bars and restaurants.

Joshua v Fury fight set for August 14 in Saudi Arabia — Hearn

LONDON, England (Reuters) - British rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have agreed an August 14 date for their world heavyweight unification title fight in Saudi Arabia, promoter Eddie Hearn said on Thursday.

Hearn, who is Joshua’s promoter, did not provide details of the location but said local organisers planned to build a new stadium.

He said the fight was a “done deal”, even if not yet fully signed off by both parties.

“August is about 23 degrees at 21:00hrs, but they want to create something very, very special,” Hearn told Sky Sports television.

“Last time they built the stadium for the Andy Ruiz fight in just seven weeks and that held 18 000 and this will be a similar setup.

“They have the opportunity to hold it indoors but they want to create something that’s

going to just shock the world and they want to, if they can, build another stadium just for this fight.”

Independence Three-Stage Cycling Meet pedals off today GUYANA’S top cyclists will battle for almost $800 000 in cash prizes when they pedal off this morning in the first stage of the Independence Three-Stage Cycling Meet, which is scheduled for this weekend in Berbice and Linden with finishes in Georgetown.

The flagship event of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), which started in 1983 and was last contested in 2016, was resuscitated this year with the help of the Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

The country’s top local cyclists are expected to compete at the event. Yesterday, US-based cyclist and former National Cycling Road Race Champion, Raynauth Jeffrey arrived in the country.

A number of seasoned names, including the dominant Jamual John and Briton John, are expected to battle for championship honours.

Some local teams will participate with multiple cyclists. The third and final stage will be held from tomorrow at 07:30hrs. Cyclists will race from Kara Kara in Linden to Bank’s DIH in the capital City.

PRIZE MONEY In total, $775 000 will be up for grabs in the four-division battle.

The overall winner will receive $70 000 with second place collecting $60 000 and third place $50 000. Fourth place is expected to collect $40 000, fifth $35 000 and sixth $25 000.

The Masters winner will collect $50 000, second place $35 000, third place $25 000 and fourth place $15 000.

The top three ladies cyclists and top three juniors will also receivet over $100 000 in prizes.

THE Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club and Berbice Cricket Board Basil Butcher Memorial Trust Fund on Thursday, jointly continued their assistance to youth cricketers across Guyana by donating four bicycles each to the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) and the Essequibo Cricket Board ECB). The two organisations also received a combined 24 school bags as part of the R(HTYSC’s Say Yes to Education Programme.

BCB president and RHTYSC Secretary/ CEO Hilbert Foster, at a simple presentation at the world famous Bourda Cricket ground, stated that the club, with the cooperation of BCB established the Fund in tribute to the legendary West Indies middle-order batsman

in early 2020.

Butcher died in the United States after a long illness in December of 2019 and was buried in his home village of Port Mourant.

Last year , the 11 cricket teams of the club distributed millions of dollars worth of cycles, cricket gear, uniforms, clothing, footwear, food hampers, office materials and educational grants to less fortunate youths, public institutions, churches and sports organisations across the country in memory of Butcher.

The 2021 edition was launched several weeks ago and recently donated 4 cycles to youths in Linden, where Butcher lived for most of his life after his Test retirement in 1969.

CONCACAF: Revamped Gold Cup tournament a ‘celebration of football’ MIAMI, Florida (CMC) – Organisers CONCACAF Thursday announced the full schedule for this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will mark the zenith of the confederation’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

The main showpiece will run from July 10 to August 1 but will be preceded by a new preliminary-round qualifying tournament, which will run from July 2 to 6, and determine the last three spots in the opening group stage.

Eleven stadiums across the United States will host the 16th edition of the tournament which will conclude with a grand final at the newly built US$2 billion Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, which was opened last year. “ We a r e e x t r e m e ly pleased to confirm the schedule and venues for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, which promises to be a celebration of football in our great region,” said CONCACAF president, Victor Montagliani.

“2021 is CONCACAF’s 60th anniversary year and we look forward with great anticipation to watching the best men’s national teams in our confederation compete for the Gold Cup title.

“With an exciting new format and the prospect of welcoming passionate fans to the

Windies Women receive first dose of COVID vaccine Torres scores hat-trick as Man City CRICKET West Indies (CWI) has confirmed that the West Indies Women’s High-Performance training squad and coaching staff have received their first vaccinations against COVID-19 at the start of their monthlong camp in Antigua.

CWI, in partnership with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Ministry of Health, has been able to ensure that all eligible members of the squad and support staff have now received their first dose of the vaccine.

CWI is supporting the Government’s efforts to raise awareness of the importance of receiving the vaccine to protect everyone from the COVID-19 virus.

CWI’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Israel Dowlat spoke of the importance of having players and the support staff vaccinated.

“CWI is committed to assist the vaccination drive across the region by raising awareness and helping to educate communities, as this will help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the West Indies. We continue to invest in the health and wellbeing of our cricketers and staff and are extremely grateful to the Ministry of Health in Antigua and Barbuda for assisting in

getting everyone at the camp vaccinated.”

Eighteen players and support staff received their first dose of the vaccine in Antigua this week, as several others received their first dose in their home countries before the camp.

Guyana included in CWI action-packed home schedule … South Africa, Australia and Pakistan visits confirmed

ST JOHN’S, Antigua Cricket West Indies (CWI) yesterday announced an action-packed schedule for the West Indies Men, featuring three consecutive international home tours against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan, from June to August 2021.

The Test and T20 International (T20I) series against the Proteas, rescheduled from 2020, will start the International summer. The world-renowned tourism destinations of Saint Lucia and Grenada will be the West Indies host venues.

South Africa are due to arrive at St Lucia on June 1 and will play two Test matches at The Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, followed by five T20Is at the Grenada National Cricket Stadium from June 26 to July 3.

CWI is grateful to the Governments of St Lucia and Grenada for agreeing, at relatively short notice, to host the touring South Africans. This is the first time that South Africa will play bilateral cricket in the West Indies since 2010.

The July 9 to 24 Australia white-ball tour of the West Indies will also begin at St Lucia’s Darren Sammy Cricket Ground hosting five

T20Is. The Aussies then move on to Barbados for three day/night CG Insurance One Day Internationals (ODIs) at the world-famous Kensington Oval. The CG Insurance ODIs provide the opportunity for West Indies

England bowler James Anderson wanted to ‘impress’ Marnus Labuschagne ENGLAND’s James Anderson says bowling to Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne was like seeing a girl in a nightclub and wanting her to be “impressed”.

Anderson had not previously played against Labuschagne, whom he dismissed playing for Lancashire against Glamorgan last week.

England will attempt to win back the Ashes in Australia this winter.

“You want to create a good impression and stamp your authority on that battle,” said Anderson.

Anderson, 38, is set to take part in his fifth Ashes tour.
