Hotels, shopping malls to transform Palmyra into commercial hub

HOTELS, shopping malls and a hive of economic activities are expected to spring into operations with the construction of a national stadium at Palmyra, Region Six, similar to the Guyana National Stadium on the East Bank Demerara, Region Four.

This is according to Vice-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, who, at the time, was addressing members of the Region Six business community at the Classic International Hotel and Resort in Skeldon on Sunday.

The Vice-President told the Region Six business community that the government has taken all the lands from GuySuCo around the village of Palmyra, behind the Indian Arrival Monument for the stadium. Construc-

tion works are expected to commence before year end.

“We believe that just like how that stadium serves Regions Three and Four across the bridge, so too this stadium can serve Regions Six and Five and can become a growth pole,” he said.

In the vicinity of the Guyana National Stadium today, there are hotels, thriving businesses and a university campus.

Mr Jagdeo said that the vision is to have a similar plan for the area where the stadium at Palmyra will be built.

He also noted that the government has received several proposals for hotel development in Region Six, and pointed out that these investments will support the government’s efforts to drive growth and generate jobs

in Region Six. President, Dr Irfaan Ali, who led a Cabinet outreach in Region Six on Monday, also spoke about the plans to build the stadium at Palmyra while addressing a gathering at the Drop-in Centre in Smythfield, New Amsterdam.

“To support that national stadium, we are going to build a new urban centre. We already have proposals for stateof-the-art modern hotels, malls, private hospitals and a whole lot more other commercial activity that will come here and commence before the end of this year,” a release from the Office of the President quoted President Ali as saying.

The Head of State led a team of high-level Cabinet officials to Berbice with the aim of engaging residents, finding solutions to their problems and outlining the government’s vision for the region.

During his first stop at

the Drop-in Centre in Smithfield, New Amsterdam, the Head of State made a few major announcements.

“We are creating a macro-vision that will transform this region beyond recognition, create opportunities for new jobs, bring sustainable jobs, and empower people to participate in a greater way in the economy of this region. That is what we are about,” President Ali said.

The President said that

his government has been working on a pathway of prosperity for every citizen in the region and for every citizen in the country.

“As we speak now, we are evaluating many interests, from the thought of a deep-water harbour to actually working on an agreement to having a deep-water harbour right here in Region Six that will create thousands of jobs, upstream and downstream,” the Head of

He said that the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is purporting to legitimise criminal occupation of these reserves by accepting a fee from persons, and allowing them to vend on these lands.

“These vendors erect makeshift stalls, sheds, or place caravans, motor vehicles, carts and other receptacles on these lands from which they do vending.

This use of these lands are causing serious traffic hazards, traffic congestions, public inconvenience, and they also affect private proprietors from accessing and enjoying the use and benefits of their properties,” the Legal Affairs Minister said.

He added: “We are well aware of the fact that businesses on Regent Street and other commercial streets have been forced to secure orders

Further, Nandlall said that while the government is expending a tremendous amount of time and resources on trying to clean the city and its environs,

a venture that the City Council has publicly refused to join hands on, it is exacerbating the problem by licensing persons to create these public nuisances.

“We simply cannot continue in this way,” Nandlall said, adding that this is a country-wide problem, since, in any community, persons are confronted with eye-sores including wrecked vehicles left on street corners and parapets.

Noting that the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils have been advised to remove these encumbrances and institute criminal charges if necessary, Nandlall said while the government recognises that these vendors are earning a living, and, in that respect, is empathic, they cannot continue to do so in a manner that causes public disorder, and creates a public nuisance. The laws must be enforced to ensure an orderly society.

“In the city, if this state of affairs is not addressed by the City Council, the government will be forced to act, including taking over some of these city streets under The Roads Act,” The Attorney-General said.

It was also announced that more than six proposals for small refineries in the region have been received.

To supplement the possibility of refineries and other related projects, the Guyana National Training Centre will also be established in the region.

He said that more than $160 million will be spent in “phase one alone” for the training centre, which will be used to train young people in the areas of oil and gas and hospitality.

“These are the real investments,” President Ali said, adding that Berbice will also have its own national stadium, which will be supported by the development of an urban centre.

The President also listed the current developmental programmes, from road construction to housing, to benefits for the health sector. He said that all of those things are happening while his government continues to navigate global issues, including COVID-19, the War in Ukraine and the supply chain crisis.

“Our job is to work with every single stakeholder to ensure that we build a region and a country that create sustainable opportunities for all,” President Ali said.

‘Time for development is now’

—Prime Minister tells Region Six residents PRIME Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, has told residents of Courtland and Fyrish, Region Six, that the aim of the government is to significantly transform Berbice through massive investments.

The Prime Minister was part of a team of high-level Cabinet officials who visited Berbice to engage residents and devise solutions to address challenges with which which persons might be faced.

Along with meetings in Courtland and Fyrish, Prime Minister Phillips also joined President Dr. Irfaan Ali at Rose Hall and Albion for further outreaches.

At Courtland, the Prime Minister said that through Budget 2022, the government has allocated a whopping $10.8 billion to develop the region this

year.

“We are a government that is focused on developing Guyana, developing all the communities in Guyana. We are not interested if you would have voted for APNU+AFC at the last elections. What is important to us is that elections have passed, we are elected, and now is the time for development in Guyana,” Prime Minister Phillips said.

The Prime Minister went on to list all of the government’s development projects and programmes in store for Region Six, while listening to the concerns raised by residents.

He also promised those in attendance that the government is committed to fulfilling all the promises made in the PPP/C’s manifesto prior to the 2020 elections.

Creating employment opportunities

THE People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration has embarked on an aggressive programme to create jobs.

Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo told Berbicians that 3,000 temporary jobs will be created in the region. The announcement was made during a recent visit by Dr. Jagdeo to the region. According to the Vice-President, people will be employed three days a week at schools, hospitals and government offices at a salary of $40,000 per month.

The benefits of the intervention go way beyond the fact that recipients will have money in their pockets; it will have a multiplier effect on the village economy, while at the same time making a difference to the aesthetics and environmental health of the various communities.

The intervention could

not have come at a better time; a time when thousands of sugar workers were thrown on the bread line following the closure of the two grinding Berbice sugar estates, namely Skeldon and Rose Hall, by the previous APNU+AFC coalition government. The closure of the estates was done despite a recommendation by a committee set up by the then administration not to close them, which raised some serious questions as to the real motives in closing the estates, given the fact that the vast majority of sugar workers are known to be supportive of the PPP/C. The situation was further aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the flood situation, which resulted in a significant contraction of economic activities in the region, and, for that matter, in the country as a whole.

As pointed out by the

Vice-President, the move by the government is a strategic intervention to bring about sustainable and balanced development in the region, especially in the context of an emerging oil- and-gas economy, which will see significant investments in several infrastructural projects, including a Deep Water Harbour and the construction of a bridge across the Corentyne River, linking the two neighbouring countries of Guyana and Suriname.

As a caring government, the PPP/C Administration has embarked upon a programme to create thousands of jobs. Some 50,000 jobs are expected to be created before the end of the current tenure of the PPP/C Administration, which is in addition to the thousands of part-time jobs which are now being rolled out in several regions.

In addition, the government is also providing financial and other assistance to

persons who are desirous of opening their own small and medium-sized businesses.

Job creation, it must be said, is not limited to public and private sector jobs only, but also to opportunities created by the growth of the services sectors, which has given rise to the employment of a significant number of people in areas such as catering, cosmetology, fitness, hospitality and transportation, among others.

Already, there is a shortage of certain categories of workers in the construction sector, which has grown rapidly with increased public spending on infrastructural programmes. Much of the ‘slack’ has been taken up by foreign workers coming from neighbouring Venezuela and Suriname.

The offer of temporary employment is a welcome move by the government to bring financial relief to households that are still to

recover from the recent crisis situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the flood situation last year. The government had already put in place a number of measures to bring relief to the population, especially the most vulnerable. This is reflected in cash transfers to households, removal or reduction in value-added taxes on a range of consumer items, subsidies on water and electricity for pensioners, and increases in old age pensions.

The creation of part-time employment to thousands of unskilled workers in the several regions of Guyana will certainly help to further cushion the effects of increases in the cost of living, and, in the process, put a smile on the faces of thousands of Guyanese. And while it is not intended to be a permanent solution to the lack of employment opportunities, it is certainly

a short-term solution to the financial challenges faced by many householders until the economy is fully consolidated, and there are full employment opportunities.

And despite the best efforts of the government, there will always be the few who will continue to depend on others to give them a ‘raise’, even though the opportunities for employment are there, and they are in perfect physical health. That tendency to want money without working is part of a discarded mindset which, unfortunately, is still being encouraged by some elements in our society, especially in the context of an anticipated rise in oil revenues.

The government must be commended for coming up with measures to ease the financial burdens of the Guyanese people. The offer of temporary jobs to those in need is indeed a welcome development.

Dear Editor, GUYANESE-AMERICAN Hindus celebrated Ram Naumi (Navami), the birth or appearance of Lord Rama, last Sunday. Guyanese temples were packed to capacity with worshippers in the greater New York area where hundreds of thousands of Guyanese are settled. There are dozens of Guyanese Mandirs in the NY metro area, including Schenectady, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. There are also Guyanese mandirs in Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Atlanta and a few other cities where there are

large clusters of Guyanese.

Ram Naumi is one of the more popular festivals of Hindus, though not in the same category as Diwali or Phagwah.

Ram Naumi is tied to Navratri, the holiest period in the Hindu calendar in the Spring. Hindus have been observing Navratri since April 1 – a fasting period that culminated with observance of Ram Navami.

Navratri is an auspicious time for marriages or new undertakings. Just prior to Navratri is known as “Karwas,” which prohibits marriages or poojas or new undertakings. Navratri is one of the most auspicious

periods in the Hindu calendar and during this time the feminine aspects of God are worshipped. Navratri is an extremely pretty festival, highly inspiring and instructive on how to live. People were observed praying during this period with great fervour and devotion. Temples are holding discourses from the Ramayana or other holy books.

Large crowds thronged mandirs for nine nights of religious observance and propitiation of the three Devis and for the birth of the Lord. Hindus view Lord Ram as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. They believe that when the evil

forces were out to destroy the world, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Rama and made his appearance on earth to save the world and to re-establish dharma – righteous life.

Devotees fasted (avoiding meat, fish and eggs) and visited temples and conducted prayers at homes on the preceding days. Many observed a strict fast, avoiding food during the day for over two weeks. Fasting, pandits explained, is good for the body and the soul. Many performed or sponsored pujas or Ramayana kathas (discourses) as is the custom in Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname, and the Caribbean.

Navratri and Ram Naumi are extremely colourful ceremonies and are highly inspiring. The holy ‘Ramayana’ was read with a discourse during Navratri and on Ram Navami and their lessons explained by the presiding pandits. Devotees were well dressed in traditional garb. It was a solemn yet festive occasion. At the Shiva Temple, Pandit Munelall held court explaining the relevance of the festival and the significance of Lord Rama. There was bhajan-singing accompanied by drumming and musical equipment, with people clapping to the rhythmic beat.

Ram Namui culminates

the fasting period for Hindus for the Spring Navratri – one of the most auspicious periods for observant Hindus.

Hence the reason for the propitiation of Lord Rama.

Hindus believe that chanting Lord Rama’s name removes all devotees’ sins and brings prosperity to them. Lord Shri Rama fulfils the wishes and desires of his devotees.

At the mandirs, there was bhajan and kirtan singing. Elaborate vegetarian meals were prepared nightly for Navratri and for the celebration of the lord’s birthday on Sunday similar to a party.

Authorities mull launch of breakfast programme in Regions Five, Six

PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that his government is working on a plan to launch a school-feeding programme at schools in Regions Five and Six before the end of the year.

Addressing residents of Region Six during a Cabinet outreach on Monday, President Ali said the aim of the programme is to ensure that children in those regions have proper nourishment that will foster better learning.

He said that along with promoting education and health, this initiative will bring tens of millions of dollars in investment to the region.

“These are the real programmes and policies; these are not fantasies, these are not illusions…

These are fundamental policies and programmes that the government is bringing to the children,” President Ali said.

Learners in Regions Five and Six will soon benefit from the government’s breakfast programme The President also announced that the govern-

ment intends to ensure that textbooks are provided to

all secondary school students in 2022.

“I’m committing to you now that the resources to

provide the textbooks for the children in the secondary schools will be available this year,” Dr. Ali said.

The President related that some $108 million has already been spent on the provision of textbooks for students in the region.

He reminded the residents that tens of thousands of children have also benefitted from other initiatives.

The government has spent over $700 million in the region on uniform allowances and the “Because we care” cash grant.

“And imagine we still have to get up to $50,000 per child before the end of this [Presidential] term…

So, that will almost triple in three years; that is the type of investment the government is making to the children, to women and vulnerable groups,” President Ali affirmed.

‘Agriculture will always be important’ - Minister Singh tells Black Bush residents

RESIDENTS of Lesbeholden, Johanna, Mibicuri and Yakusari in Black Bush Polder, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), were on Monday assured by Senior Minister with Responsibility for Finance within the Office of the President, Dr Ashni Singh, that agriculture has been and will continue to be among the most important industries in the country.

They turned up in their

numbers to meet the minister and his technical team to air their concerns and hear of planned developments for the region and country. The four polders are known mainly for farming.

Many were concerned about their livelihoods being threatened by the emergence of the oil-and gas-sector, but after hearing what the minister had to say, they felt pleased and confident that agriculture is still at the forefront of the government’s agenda.

“Agriculture will be a major anchor of our economy moving forward and agriculture will take on even greater significance in the months and years ahead,” Minister Singh assured those gathered.

Speaking directly to the many rice farmers, he reiterated the government’s position on rice and disclosed that plans are already being made to open up more lands for cultivation.

“Rice of course, as you know, is extremely important to us. We see rice playing a tremendous role going forward.

In fact, we anticipate that the rice industry [will] grow even more. We are planning to bring more acreage under cultivation. We are planning to continue to invest in drainage and irrigation to ensure you are able to get good yields.

We are continuing to invest in new varieties and extension services, all with the aim of ensuring our rice production can be raised, that the yields are raised, that our cost of production is lowered and we get good markets and we are able to ensure the long-term viability and profitability of rice,” he added.

While touching on diversification, the senior minister spoke about introducing new crops to the market and also transforming the way cash crops are looked at as the agro-processing facility at Mibicuri moves closer to becoming operational.

“We are exploring new crops. I’m sure you have heard about the President’s corn and soya bean initiative.

We are looking to become a large-scale corn and soya bean producer to augment crops we have historically been producing on a large scale; we are looking also at cash crops and catapulting cash crops to a completely new level of operation. There again ensuring we not only produce cash crops for sale as fresh fruits and vegetables, but for processing and value-added by processing them and giving them longer shelf life,” he told the residents.

The minister and team then made a quick stop at Mibicuri to check on the progress of the agro-processing plant. It was disclosed that the facility is in an advanced state of readiness and that the equipment is being imported and would be installed shortly.

The construction of the plant was made possible through a partnership between government and a private investor. It is expected that fresh produce will be taken from farmers and processed for export and sale in local markets.

The facility is expected to be operational within a matter of months, even as the government is actively pursuing other similar partnerships, so that more value can be added to the

abundance of locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Meanwhile, given the recent success of the farmers’ market, the Ministry of Agriculture has been tasked with increasing the frequency of such events, so that farmers can take their produce and have them sold directly to consumers.

Transport infrastructure, particularly as it relates to farm-to-market and community roads, was among the main concerns highlighted by residents.

The contracts for some of the roads identified for rehabilitation will soon be awarded. The minister, however, stressed that while a $4 billion sum has been allocated for road works, all may not be fixed with this budget. He has asked the technical team to assess the roads that were identified and to prioritise works based on their condition.

Water and recreational facilities were also addressed and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GWI, Shaik Baksh, is expected to be in the area soon to deal with concerns arising from the quality and reliability of the water supply in the four polders.

Many of residents subsequently expressed gratitude to the minister and his team for listening to their concerns.

President Irfaan Ali led a one-day cabinet outreach to the region on Monday. Ministers visited various communities to listen to issues facing residents. A day earlier, Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo began meeting with the residents. Those meetings continued on Monday.

Daughter gets lifetime protection order against father SENIOR Magistrate Leron Daly on Monday granted a lifetime protection order against a city businessman who will now have to stay 1,000 feet from his daughter.

The order was granted

by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

On April 1, 2022, the businessman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and using threatening language against the woman.

He appeared before Magistrate Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was released on a total of $400,000 bail after denying both charges.

The investigation was launched following the circulation of a video on social media where the businessman was seen assaulting his daughter at his Kitty business place. He also allegedly threatened to shoot her.

The young lady during a video interview which was aired on Facebook, revealed that her father has been brutalising her for years. Her stepmother and other siblings who reside with him are also being abused, she claimed.

The young woman related that she was forced to come forward because the latest beating was captured on CCTV cameras inside

the store and she was able to secure a copy.

400 small business grants for Region Six residents SOME 400 smallbusiness grants will be available for residents of Region Six to either start a business or expand their businesses, Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo announced on Monday.

The Vice-President had weeks earlier made similar announcements — first announcing 250 business grants for residents of Re-

gion Two and the same amount for residents of Region 10.

Speaking at community meetings held at the Line Path Community Centre Ground and the Tagore Memorial Secondary school, Dr Jagdeo said the $250,000 grants are geared to stimulate economic activities in the region, which has been affected by the

estates closures by the APNU+AFC Government as well as the high cost of living, due to external factors which are beyond Guyana’s control.

The Vice-President, the previous day, had announced that some 3,000 temporary jobs will be allocated to residents of Region Six in the coming weeks.

Those who will be employed will work 10 days per month and will be assigned to schools, hospitals and government offices

and will receive a salary of $40,000.

On assumption to office, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Government was confronted with the situation where some 30,000 persons had lost their jobs under the APNU+AFC Government, and another 40,000 more when the same government closed the country on the advent of COVID-19 pandemic.

“In the short-term, we have to try to get people re-employed, so that is why in this year’s budget we made a decision that we will give people temporary employment so that they can have a family income,” the Vice-President said.

Some 800 temporary jobs have already been allocated to Region Two and the same number in Region 10 to ease the impact of the high cost of living on the residents there.

The PPP/C had promised to create 50,000 jobs in its first term in office, and since its election to office in August 2020, the party has been working diligent-

ly to fulfil its manifesto commitments to the people, Vice-President Jagdeo said.

The government is also co-investing in the construction of an agro-processing factory at Black Bush Polder that will create scores of jobs for Region Six residents, and, according to Mr Jagdeo, the government has received several similar proposals for investment in the region.

“So, if anybody has an employment-creating activity in this region, then we can sit and co-invest with them,” the Vice-President said.

He had previously explained that the government is working to attract investors to Regions Three, Five, Six, 10 and in the hinterland by offering them incentives to invest in these regions.

The majority of the investors, since the discovery of oil in Guyana, have been flocking Regions Three and Four, to the extent that these two regions are now experiencing labour shortages, Dr Jagdeo lamented.

Since coming to power in 2020, the government has

delivered on a number of its manifesto promises. These so far include restoring the children’s education grant and increasing it to $25,000, with the aim to further increase it to $50,000 by 2025.

This grant has also been extended to children at private schools. The school uniform voucher has also increased, old-age pension has been increased by 40 per cent and is expected to double the amount paid out in 2015. The government has also removed VAT on water and electricity, data and drainage, and irrigation charges which were increased by 500 per cent by the former government, have been slashed to the pre2015 rate.

Some $250,000 in relief grants have also been given to laid-off sugar workers, as well $25,000 to the populace to cushion the impact of COVID-19.

Monetary assistance was also given to all pensioners and billions of dollars have been paid to farmers affected by the massive floods last year.

Last week, during the post-ceremonial programme for the opening of the April session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes, President of the GBA, Pauline Chase, called for the appointment of persons to serve on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), which has not been reconstituted since 2017.

The JSC by legal definition is the guardian of Guyana‘s judicial autonomy. The commission is responsible for making recommendations for judicial appointments and removing or exercising disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in judicial offices.

Article 128 (1) of Guyana’s constitution states that “judges, other than the chancellor and chief justice, shall be appointed by the President, who shall act in accordance with the advice of the Judicial Service Commission.”

“The effects of its absence goes without saying, and while I’m sure that blame can be appointed by defenders over the years for its absence, I wish to sound the warning that the situation grows more dire with each and every passing day,” Chase said.

Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall S.C, had endorsed Chase’s call during an airing of his Facebook programme, ‘Issues in the News.’

“This has long been my position; reason being is that ever since this

formula was put into the constitution, a President has never been able to secure the agreement of the Opposition Leader on the matter. As a result, since 2001, we have not had the substantive appointment of neither a Chancellor nor Chief Justice, which is a real sad state of affairs,” he said.

According to Nandlall, the “formula” for judicial appointments needs to be changed since no other country in the Commonwealth Caribbean has such a formula.

“In fact, the only country in the world that has such a formulation I believe is Pakistan, and like us, they have never had an agreement for the appointment of a chief justice… the system simply does not work,” he said.

He explained that the government will soon be embarking upon a constitutional reform exercise, with the hope of changing the process.

“We have 22 years of experience, so when we start the constitution reform process, I hope that we would be guided by these real examples and don’t make fanciful recommendations, idealistic and unreal recommendations.”

“The thing simply does not work. It makes no sense putting into a law and worse yet, putting into a constitution a mechanism that is going to cause deadlock,” Nandlall said on his programme.

$180M Lima road project commences

RESIDENTS of Lima, Region Two, are breathing a sigh of relief as work to repair the deplorable road in their community has started.

During several government meetings, the residents had pleaded for the road to be repaired. They had complained about the countless potholes on the roadway which is used to access the popular Mainstay Resort.

During Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo’s recent visit to the region, former Toshao

of Mainstay, Joel Fredericks, raised the issue once again.

He said that numerous representations were made for the road to be repaired but nothing was done. Fredericks also mentioned that the Mainstay Road was previously repaired under Jagdeo’s presidency. The toshao requested that Lima Road be included in the list of projects to be undertaken in the region Jagdeo, after listening to the complaint, promised Fredericks that he will imme-

diately look into the matter.

Subsequently, work commenced on the $180 million road project. The road currently has asphalt and is in its first phase.

According to Region Two Vice-Chairman, Humace Oodit, the regional administration will be monitoring the project. He said that the region is happy to deliver another promise to the people of Essequibo.

Lakers sack head coach Frank Vogel after missing out on NBA play-offs THE Los Angeles Lakers have sacked head coach Frank Vogel after a poor campaign which saw them miss out on the play-offs.

Vogel's team won 33 of their matches, but lost 49 in a season which saw them finish 11th in the Western Conference.

His final match on Sunday was a 146-141 overtime win over Denver Nuggets.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers' general manager, said: "This is an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one we feel is necessary at this point."

Speaking after the win over Denver, Vogel had said "we'll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow," as reports suggested he was going to lose his job.

Confirming the news on Monday, the Lakers issued a statement thanking him for his efforts, with the 48-yearold having led them to the NBA championship in 2020.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Frank both on and off the court," added Pelinka, who is also the Lakers' vice-president of basketball operations.

"Frank is a great coach and a good man. We will forever be grateful to him for his work in guiding us to the 2019-20 NBA championship."

There is currently no frontrunner to succeed Vogel and the process of finding a sixth full-time head coach since Phil Jackson retired in 2011 is expected to take some time.

After joining the Lakers in 2019 on a three-year deal, Vogel helped the team to the 2020 title in Orlando, Florida. He was rewarded with a contract extension at the end of 2020-2021 as his side earned the reputation for being one of the best defensive teams in his first two seasons in charge.

However, they finished the season in the bottom 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, ranking 21st in defensive rating after finishing first in 2020-21 and third in 2019-20.

Missing out on the playoffs was hugely disappointing for the Lakers. They lost 121-110 to the Phoenix Suns which was, at the time, their seventh straight defeat.

The Lakers entered the campaign as one of the favourites in the Western Conference, however, multiple factors contributed to them falling below expectations, including injuries to several key players.

James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook only played together in 21 matches - and they held a record of 11-10 in those games.

In total, the Lakers lost 18 of 24 games following the All-Star break, with only the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers finishing with worse records during that period.

USA Cricket welcomes 2024 T20 World Cup berth USA Cricket has said it welcomed the International Cricket Council (ICC) decision to award an automatic qualification for Men's T20 World Cup in 2024.

The US team (men's) is now guaranteed to appear in what could be their first ever World Cup appearance, although both their men's and women's sides have a chance to qualify for the 2022 and 2023 events first themselves.

USA head coach J Arun Kumar said, "We are delighted to receive confirmation from the ICC that we will gain automatic qualification for the historic 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup to be co-hosted here in USA with the West Indies. For USA to play in the expanded 20 team T20 World Cup on home soil is going to be ground-breaking and historic for cricket as the sport continues to expand around the world and we're really looking to being a part of it in 2024."

After its board meeting in Dubai, the ICC said 12 teams will qualify automatically for the event. The top eight teams from the 2022 Twenty World Cup (in October-November in Australia) event will be joined by the two host members, West Indies and USA. Two more qualifiers will be based on the ranking as of November 14, 2022, with the remaining eight spots to be decided through a regional qualification process with Africa, Asia and Europe each qualifying two teams and Americas and EAP one each.

"If West Indies finish in the top eight in Australia later this year, three teams will progress based on rankings and if outside the top eight two teams will qualify from the rankings table," the ICC said in a release on Sunday (April 10).

"We are hopeful that it will in fact be a second T20 World Cup appearance though for our squad, as we are very focussed on the opportunity in front of us this year as we travel to Zimbabwe in July as one of the eight teams looking for the final two spots in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

The qualification pathway for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 has also been decided. Eight teams will gain automatic qualification into the event, comprising the top three teams from each group of the 2023 event plus host (if not in the six) and next highest ranked teams on the Women's T20 rankings table at a pre-determined date. "The remaining two teams will be

identified through the Women's T20 World Cup global qualifier," the release stated.

Women's ODI World Cup qualification pathway reworked The qualification pathway for the eight team Women's ODI World Cup was also confirmed. The yet to be determined host of the event will automatically qualify along with the next five highest placed teams at the end of the 2022-25 ICC Women's Championship (IWC). The remaining two teams will be identified through a global qualifying event between the four bottom-placed teams in the IWC plus an additional two teams from the ODI rankings.

The IWC 2017-20 - for the just-concluded 2022 ODI World Cup in New Zealand - allowed only the top-four sides plus the hosts to qualify directly.

The ICC also stated, in the same statement, that the Board has approved the recommendation to extend ODI status to a number of Associate Member women's teams to enable them to progress to global qualifying events based on ODI rankings. (Cricbuzz)

Those runs proved to be crucial as RR went on to seal a three-run win.

"It was an in the moment thing," Ashwin told Cricbuzz when asked about the time when he decided to sacrifice his wicket.

Royals' coach Kumara Sangakkara said the decision was a combination of factors discussed between the player and the team management.

"It was a combination of

both [Ashwin and RR management].

It was the right time to do that, Ashwin himself was asking from the field as well, and we had discussed it just before that, as to what we would do," the former Sri Lanka skipper said after the game.

NSC’s Teach Them Young swimming programme returns - GASA sees the programme as critical to sport’s development THE National Sports Commission (NSC), on Monday, launched its annual ‘Teach Them Young’ Easter vacation swimming programme at the COLGRAIN Pool.

The programme which caters for children ages 6 – 16, will conclude on April 22 and will be conducted by a team of qualified coaches.

Linden (Watooka Pool) and Berbice (Albion) will also host the programme for children in their respective areas.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, welcomed the large group of children at the refurbished swimming facility in the City while telling the gathering that the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, insisted on making the

programme free of charge, to accommodate as many participants as possible.

Ramson, Ninvalle said, was the driving force behind the programme’s return for the first time since the advent of COVID-19.

“I just want to urge the organisers, that safety be the watchword…with that in mind, we will make sure that there’s an ambulance here to make sure that the parents will be comfortable knowing that the children are well taken care of,” Ninvalle said.

With swimming being one of the core sports identified by the NSC and Ministry, Ninvalle is hoping that the Government’s academy for swimmers is given the same reception as their holiday swimming programme.

Cristy Campbell, one of the NSC’s commissioners, told the gathering of parents, guardians and other officials of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA), “when this programme concludes,

it will not be the end of the development of talent, because, in another two weeks, we are also preparing to launch the National Swimming Academy.”

“You can look forward to our continued support for swimming, and I would also like to use the opportunity to ask the coaches and

participants to adhere to the precautionary measures,” Campbell stated.

Meanwhile, GASA’s president, Dwayne Scott, said he was happy to see the massive turnout, adding “I hope this transfers interest into reality and this interest can be developed into potential swimmers; potential

national representatives for Guyana.”

Government to construct National Stadium in Region Six PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Monday that the government will construct a National Stadium in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) as part of their endeavours to further develop the region.

President Ali, who was speaking to res-

idents at the Drop-in Centre in Smithfield, New Amsterdam, stated, ‘to support that national stadium, we will build an entire new urban centre.”

This urban centre, he explained, will feature new hostels and hospitals. And importantly, the government has already

received proposals for these developments to start before the end of this year.

It is understood that the stadium would be built at Palmyra.

The President is leading an outreach activity with residents of Region Six and is joined by some members of his cabinet to

hear many concerns and suggestions from the residents.

Through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, there are also plans to transform the historic Albion Community Centre back to a standard where it can at least resume hosting Regional cricket.
