Probe into Jagdeo-era killings will go on … Min. Lawrence says testimony damning, but witnesses need protection

By Tamica Garnett CHAIRPERSON of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, has assured that investigations into the Jagdeo-era killings will move ahead despite setbacks in getting witnesses to testify. She said from preliminary testimonies the evidence could be damning in many of the cases, but witnesses are fearful of going public and government would have to provide the needed protection under the witness protection scheme.

Lawrence made the comments during the PNCR’s press conference on Friday.

The Jagdeo-era killings also dubbed the ‘Troubles’, was a period characterised by drug-driven chaos and blood shed during which there were several massacres, among them being: Lusignan where 11 people were killed, Bartica where another 12 were killed and Lindo Creek where seven miners were slain. Besides, there were countless extra-judicial killings – with some activists estimating that around 400 male Afro Guyanese were

gunned down. Jagdeo was President of Guyana from August 11, 1999 to December 3, 2011.

Lawrence, last Friday, while speaking at the party’s weekly conference at Congress Place, shared that the government is working on creating an environment where persons can feel safe in coming forward, however it is still a work in progress. Lawrence noted that the government kept its initial promise to investigate many of the cases, and the evidence has been damning, however, witnesses are still too fearful to identify themselves.

“These are confirmed issues during the tenure of the PPP with regards to bringing them to the courts [but] despite the various investigations launched, what we fail to be able to do right now is to get the witnesses to come forward because people are still afraid,” Lawrence said.

“We have persons within the country who are still traumatised by some of the things meted out to them or their families. As we move along the continuum, I’m quite certain that for many of those issues, people will become more confi-

dent and we will be able to address those issues in the rightful place, the courts.”

Lawrence hopes that the Protected Disclosure Act 2018, also called the “Whistleblower Act” will be a start to persons feeling more comfortable in coming forward. “We trust that we will be able to use the protection law for whistleblowers to provide those persons with protection and give them the confidence to come forward and to give evidence. What is the use of going to court if you don’t have witnesses to come forward and substantiate many of the ills that was done in this country,” Lawrence noted.

The National Assembly, in January last year, passed the Witness Protection Bill which provides a legal framework for the protection of witnesses. The bill, which was piloted by Attorney General (AG) Basil Williams SC, makes provisions for the establishment of the Witness Protection Programme and three organisations – an administrative Centre, an investigative agency and a protection agency, to administer it. The aim of the programme is to focus on the safety and security of participants, including the provision of payments to them for living expenses, relocation of them and their families and the establishment of a new identity.

During the debate on the Bill, Williams had told the House that it would be “instrumental in the government’s anti-corruption stance and fight against crime.” He said the APNU+AFC Government is committed to eradicating corruption and he said credible testimonies are critical to investigate and prosecute criminals and any public official who squander national resources for personal gain. “Providing witnesses with proper and adequate protection will play a crucial role in bringing the guilty to justice,” he stressed.

“The value of evidence provided by whistleblowers, victims and witnesses about criminal or corrupt activity cannot be overstated. They perform a sacred duty of assisting the court in discovering the truth and are cornerstones of our justice system,” he added.

ROGER KHAN’S ERA Lawrence was also questioned by media personnel about the lack of charge against convicted drug lord Roger Khan, who spent 10 years in prison in the US after being convicted there.

After being released from prison, Khan was deported to Guyana last month. On his return, he was held by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for the murder of political activist, Ronald Waddell, and Boxing Coach, Donald Allison.

However, he was subsequently released on $200,000 bail, and not much has come out the situation since “The gov-

On assuming government we ensured that we had those investigations done in order to fulfill the promise that was made. We are at a juncture now where we are unable, because of fear, to get those persons to agree to give witness on the stand. We believe as we continue to work with those persons, they will feel more comfortable. Given our passing of the whistleblowers legislation which can give them security. Which can provide them with other opportunities to take care of the fears which they now have,” Lawrence said.

“It is a work in progress and we believe that our supporters will understand.

Many of these [witnesses] are public servants and you can’t force somebody to be a witness, they have to come forward willingly. So we have to ensure we can provide that safe space, give them that protection so they can come forward. It is our responsibility. All of us to encourage those persons.”

Lawrence was also asked about the recent development whereby several charges were dismissed against former Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) officials due continued absence of the special prosecutor. It was the latest in a number of cases lost by the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU) in court.

Lawrence said the issue of SOCU’s failures is being discussed.

“I can say to you those matters have been discussed. SOCU of itself has been discussed and there are recommendations proffered for the enhancing of SOCU to ensure that those matters, even though they were brought before the court, that we can still go after those people. Now that we know what our weakest point is, we have to ensure that we can address those gaps and issues,” Lawrence said.

AS the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) iron out issues surrounding the revision of the Cummingsburg Accord, coalition party executives have called on the two sides to look at the bigger picture at this crucial part in the country’s history.

Executives of the AFC, on Thursday, held a press conference where they relayed that the negotiations on a revision of the Cummingsburg Accord had hit a snag over discussions on the naming of the Prime Ministerial Candidate. Under the Cummingsburg Accord, which brought the two political parties together as a coalition in 2015, the APNU nominates the Presidential Candidate and the AFC, the Prime Ministerial Candidate.

However, with the accord under review, there is a push for the Prime Ministerial Candidate to be selected by the President but the AFC has stated that this is “non-negotiable”. In the interim, Chairman of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Volda Lawrence said the party is very optimistic that the matters will be ironed out and the coalition will emerge stronger than ever.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Alliance for Change (AFC), Raphael Trotman has cautioned that a divided coalition could receive a negative response from the electoral as he made it clear that the coalition is better together.

Speaking with the newspaper over the weekend, representative of the Guyana Action Party (GAP) in APNU, Fourth Vice President and Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock said that he agrees with the message of Lawrence and Trotman. He stated that in the last four years the coalition government was able to make remarkable and unprecedented improvements to the country which would not have been possible had not they worked together.

“I think what we should be doing at this time is to assess our position; look at our weaknesses and strengthen the coalition. I think the coalition is the way to go. Under the leadership of His Excellency, President Granger and evenly supported by Prime Minister Nagamootoo, I think they have been leaders who steered the coalition in the direction that this country has never seen

With oil on the horizon, Allicock also cautioned that it is the least appropriate time for division amongst coalition parties as citizens are depending on a unified government to lead them safely into prosperity. He stated: “We’re stronger together rather than being divided because I think the coalition represents the entire country…some persons might be a little too ambitious at this time. We should be thinking about the entire nation with the discovery of oil, we have a very good opportunity to develop a plan that is going to allow each and every Guyanese to benefit.”

Similar sentiments were shared by Executive Member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) in APNU, Dr. David Hinds who stated that the party believes that the areas of disagreements are not beyond resolution. “WPA does not pretend that both sides do not have legitimate contentions and concerns going forward but, in coalition politics, an important test of a party’s mettle is its ability to marry its values and interests to those of the collective. That outcome demands a convergence of shrewdness, conciliation, tenacity, conviction and grasp of the requirements of the political moment. In the end, a stable coalition is far better for Guyana than individual parties locked into their partisan nests,” he said.

While things aren’t perfect, Minister Allicock said that AFC and APNU share more in common and are on the right track. “I think we need to focus on the bigger picture rather than fighting against one another we should be fighting for one another,” he said.

Leaving his words of advice, Dr. Hinds stated: “The WPA feels that the coalition is the best vehicle to take Guyana forward at this crucial juncture in our history. In that regard we would like both sides to think about the larger picture.

Coalition building and coalition preservation can be very challenging, particularly in our very polarizing environment. We urge patience and prudence but, above all, we ask that our partners not be distracted by the narratives of our detractors that are meant to turn points of disagreements into irreconcilable differences.” Lawrence has informed that the negotiations are expected to continue with the team awaiting the return of the AFC lead negotiator, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson from overseas duties.

At their news conference last week some executives of the AFC were adamant that it must name the Prime Minis-

It was during that press conference that the AFC Executives indicated that if the matter is not resolved by the time the National Executive Committee meets on November 2, 2019, a decision will have to be taken on whether or not the AFC will contest the elections as a coalition or an independent party.

But Trotman in urging caution and reason said: “ultimately the Executive will make that determination

So I think compromise has to be found on both sides, and we will find a solution to this, and I am confident about that,” Trotman said.

He said the AFC saw “value” in the coalition in 2015, and today, the ethos and value remain the same. The AFC Chairman said despite the dis-

agreements between the two sides, he believes that matter will be resolved in time. “I believe that in every engagement of this nature you will have moments of disagreement but I believe that ultimately both parties wish, as I said earlier, and desire a coalition. So the pause for me does give us an occasion to seriously reflect on where we were four or five years ago, and of course to look ahead as to where we want to go and bearing in mind the people’s expectation of us,” Trotman said.

He emphasised that in negotiation, there must be compromise. Referencing to the 2018 Local Government Elections, Trotman said based on the results, it was clear that the people were dissatisfied that the APNU and the AFC had contested those elections independently. He warned to enter the General and Regional Elections as independent parties could be detrimental to both sides. “We are likely to see a reaction that is not in our best interest if we are separate and apart,” he posited.

Trotman is urging the two sides to regroup their efforts and strive to arrive at a compromise. “I certainly don’t want to be, and I know, none of my colleagues here want to be on the wrong side of history by being involved in a gambling, high stakes, poker game. So we have to do what is best in the national interest,” he said.

Venezuelan woman shot dead, partner injured at Kaikan A VENEZUELAN woman was shot dead while her Guyanese partner sustained a gunshot wound during an attack at Kaikan close to the western border shortly after midnight on Friday.

According to reports, Valentina Marelis Pacheco, a 28-year-old Venezuelan, was shot and killed when she went to the aid of her Guyanese partner, Mark Anthony Gonsalves , who came under attack from gunmen suspected to be Sindicatos. Reports are that shortly after midnight on Friday, Gonsalves, who hails from Mabaruma, North West District, ventured into the Wenamu River to meet persons who usually venture across the border to shop.

The man left Frederick Stafford’s shop, which is located on the Wenamu River front opposite on Guyanese shore, in a canoe after seeing a light shining from across the river from the Venezuelan border. As is custom-

ary, Gonsalves paddled over the river in a small boat to enquire of the person shining the light what they wanted from the shop or whether they wanted to be transported across to Guyana.

Reports are that he met a man who said he wanted to purchase alcohol and cigarettes, however, shortly after, he saw five men armed with rifles emerged from the bushes. The men fired at him and he immediately plunged into the river and swam back to the Guyana side of the waterway. While standing on the Guyana shore, he came under further attack and Pacheco, who went to his aid, was shot in the head. Gonsalves, who sustained a gunshot wound to his foot, reported the matter to the Kaikan Police Station and he was escorted to the health centre in the area for medical attention. His condition is listed as stable.

Police are investigating the matter.

Essex lorry deaths: Driver charged with manslaughter of 39 people A lorry driver has been charged with the manslaughter of 39 people found dead inside a refrigerated trailer.

Maurice Robinson, 25, was arrested after the bodies of 31 men and eight women were found in Grays on Wednesday. He is further charged with people trafficking, immigration and money laundering offences, Essex Police said.

Mr Robinson, of Laurel Drive, Craigavon, Northern Ireland, is due before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Three others, a man and a woman, both 38, from Warrington, Cheshire, and a 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland remain in police custody.

The ambassador has also spoken to Home Secretary Priti Patel about the deaths. In a statement, the embassy said there was a “willingness to exchange information and to co-ordinate” with British authorities to help identify the victims.

It added that there had been no official confirmation of the identity of the victims. The Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said he had asked the relevant authorities to urgently establish the identities of victims and look into the cases of Vietnamese nationals who were sent abroad illegally

Colourful launch of 50th Republic Anniversary celebrations

By Gabriella Chapman Guyana’s 50th Republic Anniversary celebrations was launched on Saturday in the mining town of Linden, the birthplace of the Mashramani festivities.

This was of great significance to the people of Linden, as the Ministry of Social Cohesion; Department of Culture was highly praised for the initiative. Scores of Lindeners came out at the bus park to join in the celebration, which started off with a road parade, emulating that of the February 23 celebrations.

Costume bands, drum corps, steel orchestra, were all incorporated into the parade.

Following the parade was a ceremony and cultural presentation. During that time, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton revealed that the theme for Mash 2020 is “Guyana Together; Reflect, Celebrate and Transform”.

This, he said is the most appropriate theme for 2020 because of its significance.

“Guyana together speaks to the importance of all Guyanese uniting as one people, in pursuit of a prosperous destiny for this great nation. Reflect emphasises the need for

What are the motives of the new parties?

IT is not unusual for new political parties to emerge during the election season only to wither away after the election is over.

So, it is not surprising that we have witnessed the birth of quite a few over the last few weeks.

The question is whether these parties are serious contenders, or they are just a reflection of bruised egos or are fronts for the plotters of a return to discredited eras.

The truth is that in the seven decades since self-rule not many parties have survived for more than a decade. Of course, in our almost rigid two-party system , Third Parties have found it difficult to maintain any consistent appeal to the electorate.

Indeed, since Independence only the WPA and the AFC in different ways have managed to make any significant impact on the national psyche. The WPA, which emerged during the 1970s as a pressure group has maintained a national voice but has never done well electorally. The AFC on the other hand fared much better electorally to the point that it was a pivotal actor in the change of administration in 2015. It is instructive to note that both parties are part of the governing Coalition. The lesson seems to be that coalition is the more ef-

fective route to power for smaller electoral parties.

It is, therefore, baffling to hear some of the new parties declaring their intention to avoid partnership with the two larger parties. One is prompted to ask—what then is your intention? What are the motives of these parties? It is no secret that some of the leaders were once cozy with parties within the Coalition. If these parties are serious, what is their route to power? At least the leadership of the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) seems to be grappling with this question. One senses that that party’s engagement with the Coalition is a commonsense move that is grounded in real politics.

Some commentators have posited that the new parties, which are mostly hostile to the governing Coalition, could either separately or together muster enough votes to prevent the bigger entities—PPP and the Coalition—from gaining a majority. The question that must be asked is this-- to what end? It is naïve to think that a new party with one or two parliamentary seats could force the two titans into a National Government. It is then not out of place to conclude that these new parties may be fronting for interests that are rooting for the return of the

opposition PPP. This then is the mystery of these new parties. None of them has taken a stand against the existential threat of the PPP in its current manifestation. They seem to care less about what a PPP government in the current circumstances would mean for the stability of the country. None of them points to the wanton destruction that that party heaped on the country in the not too distant past. Guyanese who want to maintain the stability that the Coalition has managed to return to our country, must be wary of these new formations.

It must be asked what alternative visions these parties are putting before the nation.

To date, we have not seen anything that separates them from the established parties.

Insofar as they have spoken about economic development, it has been a revisiting of standard ideas which the country has heard for the last seven decades. One leader has said he does not want to put his economic ideas in the open because he fears they would be stolen. With all due respect to the gentleman, we believe that Guyanese deserve much more credit—they are far more politically intelligent than that person assumes.

Some parties have put the question

of constitutional reform as an important electoral issue. While constitutional reform and governance are legitimate national concerns, they can hardly be categorized as defining issues at this juncture. With the imminent Oil and Gas economy, these parties must say where they stand on the issues that flow from that reality. Let the country hear of your creative ideas.; do not hide behind masks.

This publication respects the right of citizens to compete for political office—the right of association is a sacred one. But we ask citizens not to be fooled by shiny promises and bitter rhetoric. Beware of those posing as deliverers. The vote is equally sacred. It can determine the difference between gloom and happiness. As one commentator argues, this is not the time to experiment with unknown and undefined actors. To those who are rooting for a minority government, we say gridlock is never an effective form of governance.

The Coalition, despite its challenges, has planted good seeds. It is the closest the country has come to the desired national unity. The last five years represent a rebirth of democratic practice in governance that ought to be continued.

We must take note of Jagdeo’s orchestrated destabilising campaign Dear Editor INSTEAD of Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, in his usual bullying tactics, seeking to undermine the independence and work of GECOM, he should be advising the nation when he and the other Opposition Members of Parliament are prepared to honour the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) regarding the responsibility of the National Assembly in election.

He is being reminded this is an edict of the CCJ, handed down in its 12 July Consequential Order, and reiterated by acting Chief Justice (CJ) yet he continues to flout same. This society must hold him accountable. Those in the media community are particularly being urged to help the nation

in doing so.

The Opposition’s vote in the National Assembly, consistent with Article 106(7) to hold election “or such longer period” given the “within three months” period passed since March, is important to ensure the constitutionality of the pending election. Mr. Jagdeo has no interest in upholding this even when he calls on others to respect the Constitution and rulings of the court. He is being called on to stop politicising and besmirching the character of GECOM Chairperson Justice Claudette Singh in his continuous misleading rants and raves. We must take note of his orchestrated destabilising campaign, misleading the nation and his supporters with public lies and mischief. In this period when the nation needs stability all Mr. Jagdeo is doing is creating more chaos and confusion.

He has moved from the several misrepresentations of the CCJ rulings, recently again exposed by the Chief Justice, yet he doesn’t stop. He now signals out Claudette Singh, dragging her as his centerpiece into his habitual distortions and public mischief. It should come as no surprise to us should he now engage the international high priced lobbying firm to multiply his deceptions and package them for international consumption and to drive negative responses to GECOM, the Government of Guyana, and other institutions and operatives who he cannot manipulate.

GECOM is an independent body and should be left alone under the leadership of the respected Judge to do its work. People should become fed up from constantly being lied to by the political bullyism of Mr.

Jagdeo. When he is finished, where he has taken our politics, our people in this country will take a long time to recover. Justice Singh is a woman of integrity, respect and high honour. Whereas she is not expected to be intimidated by the Opposition Leader the constant attacks on GECOM are intended by him to bring international pressure on the government, to undermine the electoral process and to stimulate supporters who are misguided by his constant vitriol. He is now upping the ante about rigged elections accusing the major partner in the coalition of historically rigging even as he fails to recognise that he, the party he associates with and his government are not of clean hands.

It has to be said once again that NO third party in the English-speaking Caribbean started its life with the magnitude of tangible support that the AFC has had, with winning six (6) Parliamentary seats the first time it went to general elections. The AFC achieved this feat in the 2006 elections just one (1) year after its formation.

Political parties such as the NAR and COP in Trinidad and Tobago are just two examples of ‘Third parties’ in the Caribbean region that did not fare as well as the AFC. Further, no other Third party in Guyana has been as consistently successful. In the 2011 Gen-

eral Elections, the Alliance for Change increased its support and gained seven (7) Parliamentary seats. And, it was this Party that had the audacity to move a successful “No Confidence” motion against the incumbent government in 2014 which started the process that ended with removal of the PPP from Government by the People’s will.

The history of Guyana is replete with attempts by political parties and civil society groups to make a strong impact on the politics of the day. Between 1989 and 1992 the Patriotic Coalition for Democracy (PCD) fell apart, unable to form an alliance and enter the main stage of politics. It is from this movement that the Civic component of the PPP emerged.

The AFC is now the only successful independent party. It emerged at a time when our country and our people were literally buckling under the PPP, under the worst effects of growing racial intolerance and blatant institutionalised cor-

Now, our collective cause is to raise up this country to the level befitting an oil-producing nation.

The AFC remains fully committed to working with our partners to develop our country and its citizens. We are committed to constitutional reform and have already drafted recommendations for the approval of the APNU Alliance.

The pathologists who had pronounced AFC ‘dead’ since the year of our formation (2005) have themselves had those votes resulted in further violation of the people of Region 10. Let Jagdeo address the 2006 elections and other cases such as the 1997 elections that were vitiated in the High Court. Remember when

Dear Editor

REMEMBER when, in the dead of the night and in many parts of Guyana, gun shots rang out, startling people out of their sleep? Such events left many families living in fear, their only thoughts were to run; I mean make urgent plans to run out of this country. Fear gripped Guyana and most Guyanese. For a long time this was everyday life for Guyanese.

Mothers and fathers feared for their own lives, as well as the lives of their children, especially their sons who were black. People in some neighbourhoods reported that as the numbers of those found dead escalated, many had pleaded for their lives just up to the moment their lives were brought to a brutal end. What a thing! This was a truly haunting and traumatic time in Guyanese history.

This was the reality of the day in Guyana. It stemmed from a government that saw it as it’s right to take full advantage of people and the use of lethal force, in particular against those that dared to stand up to the government or who tried to expose its lies and misdeeds. As a result, many people are still oozing from deep within their bellies from the pains and sufferings they were forced to endure during those “dark days” when the PPP so callously murdered their sons and daughters.

Most of the PPP’s 23 years in government was marred by bloodshed. Soon after taking over in 1992 and especially after the death of President Cheddi Jagan, on March 6, 1997 after he suffered a heart attack on 15 February 1997. When Jagdeo was sworn in as President on 11 August, 1999, Guyana was plunged into darkness and then began the PPP’s reign of terror.

YOUTH WITHOUT A FUTURE Other than killings and the instabili-

ty that came from the emergence of the narco-state, there was massive youth under-employment and youth unemployment. A Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Study said that youth unemployment in Guyana was around 40 per cent.

An education system in disarray, no vision for young people, and no attempt to build industries that would offer young people opportunities for a better life were just part of the problem under the PPP. The CDB further noted that “Among the direct personal consequences of youth unemployment identified were the lack of means to support self; participation in anti-social behaviours; engaging in negative behaviours as a consequence of social exclusion, low self-esteem, hopelessness and ambivalence.”

And so, as opportunities and hope for the future dried up, a cycle of crime in Guyana began that would come to destroy the lives of many of our youth.

A CRISIS OF GOVERNANCE As the PPP’s campaign to drive ethnic division in Guyana took hold, the realities of what this might mean for the ordinary person were being realized both inside and outside Guyana.

The World Bank (2003) noted that, “Guyana is at a crossroads. It could either bounce back into high growth, last seen during most of the 1990s, or continue to slide back with the risk that too many people would be trapped in abject poverty and that the ethnic divide could give way to violent conflict, undermining the very gains that a decade of economic reform has brought.

We have yet to find an example of division and disunity driving progress, positive change and social development. On the contrary, violence, instability, reduced investment, poverty and a widening social-economic gap are typically associated with ethnic division and oppression. Guyana

was no exception. The divides between the haves and have nots grew at an unprecedented rate, largely along ethnic lines. The divides grew deeper, the political violence more entrenched and culture of crime/fear was pervasive across Guyanese society.

In fact, the same World Bank report in 2003 noted that “Nowhere is the crisis of governance more evident than in the area of security. In the last two years, Guyana’s crime problem has worsened significantly, to the point where some Guyanese claim that the rule of law and the security and judicial systems have almost completely collapsed.”

And today, 16 years later, it is clear that the PPP hasn’t changed its stance on crime.

They have put forward a presidential candidate who himself is facing 19 criminal charges.

‘BRING THE EVIDENCE’ The refusal of the PPP to investigate deaths of opposition political activists and the bloodshed at the hands of the state as the PPP government cracked down with brutal force on political protests, is perhaps the most startling indication of the PPP’s brazen disrespect for life, for security, for the rule of law and for democracy.

They simply laughed it off - the PPP’s famous saying, ‘bring the evidence’ will go down in Guyanese history as one of the country’s most shameful moments.

I wonder how the family of Courtney Crum-Ewing, who was assassinated near his home in Diamond on the East Bank Demerara in the early hours of the night on March 10, 2015, feel about the PPP’s cruel ‘Bring the evidence’ taunt. Crum-Ewing was on a bullhorn appealing to residents to go out and vote for the opposition coalition in May of that same [year]. Or, what about the family of Donna McKinnon who was shot dead straight from the PPP’s very own headquar-

ters, ‘Freedom’ House. Is it the same taunt of ‘Bring the evidence’?

This type of presumptuousness has eventually led to extrajudicial killings that exceeded 400 men and women and children.

You couldn’t talk, you couldn’t even walk, without fear of reprisal.

Only a state living in absolute fear of its dishonesty being exposed stoops to such extremes. Only a state not willing to be honest with its people reaches for bloodshed and murder as a solution.

THERE IS GREAT HOPE A dossier packaging the working of crimes against humanity within Guyana; the lawlessness and racial repression and the arrogance of PPP has been documented.

Though it is often said that it is not exhausted, it truly spells out as much as possible the plain murderous dishonesty of the PPP – men who now want to come back after the clung to power for 23 years, and take our country back to the past.

The audacity of such is unbearable for so many decent and hardworking men and women of this land. Under President Granger’s honest leadership, the APNU+AFC coalition has set a new direction for our country. We have come a long way and the evidence is there to show. There is still more to do and the best is yet to come through the APNU+AFC coalition, which continues to stand strong. We must continue to support this progress, we must ensure our country is never again torn apart by racial and political violence.

As we approach our next elections, we have a clear choice about the kind of future we want – progress, unity and a better life under the honest leadership of David Granger.

Who is listening to the Government cry about the Voters List Dear Editor WHEN the Elections Campaign was in full swing in 1990, the Opposition Alliance P.C.D, the Civic Reform Group (GUARD) and the United Republican Party (U.R.P) joined forces to pressure the P.N.C Government into dumping the Preliminary Voters List and warning that a general strike may be called if their demands were not satisfied.

The Preliminary Voters List has been unan-

imously condemned by all Opposition forces because they claim it is riddled with ineligible names and about ninety per cent of the voters listed do not have specific addresses; this story was written by the now silent Editor of Stabroek News, Mr. Anand Persaud.

Adding this voice to the saga was former U.S President Jimmy Carter. Carter stepped into the escalating dispute between the P.N.C Government and the Opposition over the scandal of the Preliminary Voters List. From the moment he deplaned [at the]Timehri Interna-

tional Airport, Carter said that a credible voters list is essential for free and fair elections.

September 1991, the Elections Commission was wrapped up in debate over the fate of the bedeviled Preliminary Voters List and was likely to opt for the compilation of a fresh list solely from the House-to-House Enumeration Forms filled out this year 1991. A credible source close to the Commission said that if the objective was a blemish free list, a pristine one from the Registration Forms with no recourse to the faulty 1985/1990 roll would

have to be pursued.

This is exactly what the present Government-appointed Commissioners are saying: use the data from the present House-to-House Registration. But unlike 1992, where is the Carter Center, N.D.I and ETAL who is listening to the government’s cry about a bloated Preliminary Voters List.

AMONG THE PANDITS

ODAY, Guyana observes Diwali or Deepavali, the Festival of Lights.

In India’s Hindu calendar, today is also Maha Kali Puja day, celebrated mostly in

Bengal.

From childhood I have been familiar with the observance in my home and in my village of both events; and my upbringing has been influenced by their great moral teachings, especially that of tolerance.

For a while, I attended the Whim Hindu temple. I joined the Kirtan group, where I learned to play the harmonium and to sing bhajans. I also studied elementary Hindi. It was not a surprise for Sita and I to be married according to Jimala rites. We exchanged garlands or malas, of fresh flowers. That was followed by a puja at the Shiva temple, where we took our vows before Pandit Tiwari.

In 2016, Sita and I symbolically renewed our vows at the Shiva temple in Mahabalipuram, the ancient, historic 7th century world heritage site in Tamil Nadu, fifty years after our reunion at a Diwali Fair at Whim, my home village.

NEGATIVE COMMENTS It was therefore cynical for persons to post negative comments on social media about the observance on Friday evening of Diwali Ustav, at the Baridi Benab, State House, which is the official Residence of President David Granger. It didn’t go unnoticed also that no coverage of the event appeared in yesterday’s edition of two of the daily newspapers.

Ever since he ascended to the presidency, President Granger has been the patron of celebrations that are linked to our major religions and our diverse cultures.

For the Head of State to do so, is of national significance for our multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural Republic.

Those putrid comments, however, are obviously charged with social bias and ethnic prejudice, and in ordinary circumstances I would have ignored them. But I know the contaminated, political source from where the racist scorn is flowing, and I feel that it is my turn to respond.

Over the years Sita and I have been attending key Muslim religious functions. On occasions when the President attended, I observed him lifting his hands in prayers, as Muslim worshippers were doing. At one of those functions, he must have seen my enquiring eyes.

He leaned towards me, and said that while he was not a Muslim, many of the people who voted for him, are Muslims; and that he has high respect for them.

And, once whilst we were together at the MetenMeer-Zorg mosque, on a lighter note, he asked me whether I had seen his name inscribed as an honorary member on a plaque at the mosque!

SINCERE LEADER It is evident that President Granger radiates the aura of a sincere leader who recognises the universal message in all religions.

I recall, as I did before, my visit to the Whim Kali temple, when I became Prime Minister. I took part in the rituals. I did so as a tribute to the devotion of my parents, their Tamil ancestors and other believers.

I have been walking with the believers since 1961, when I started my association with the PPP. I have walked with the party’s pandits.

In Berbice, my first encounter was with the enigmatic Pandit Tiwari, whom we nicknamed “Churkiman”. He was tough, and taught us how literally to be foot soldiers.

When our activists were on house-to-house campaigns, he would organise a jhandi in a particular village, only to provide us with free food, always “seven curries”.

Over many years, I worked alongside Pandit Sharma, Pandit Budhram, Pandit Ramlall and Pandit Harilall called “Gulzar”, all of whom, at some point, were members of the party’s leadership. Later, I encountered Pandit Misir, Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud and, last among them, Pandit Balchand Persaud, the former Moscow-trained Freedom House Manager and party executive. All of these pandits were personally loyal to Cheddi Jagan, his Marxist-Leninist ideology notwithstanding.

They were the strike force in the inner-party balance of power, and were potent at the grassroots, “bottom-house” level.

AMONG THE PANDITS I have long wanted to write about my life among the pandits, but for now I fondly remember two among them – Pandit Misir and Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud.

I remember the tall, gentle and always polite, Pandit Misir. He was invariably wearing a red tie, donning a felt hat, and always flashing a broad smile. For many years and at consecutive party congresses since 1965, he would help in serving the main meals. He would “dish out” curries with a long silver spoon. As he did so, he would make eye contact with the eaters, who were congress delegates. Softly, he would be heard saying, “I am Pandit Misir. Vote for me, please.”

During coffee breaks he would be handing out an assortment of colourful Soviet and Chinese booklets, and as he did so he would repeat the “vote for me” refrain.

During my 50 years with the PPP, I have spent the longest time alongside the likeable, affectionate, iconic Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud.

After we won the 1992 elections, and before ministers were appointed, Panditji was identified for the post of Minister of Agriculture. Dr. Jagan asked me to talk with Reep, to ask him to resign as President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha. I did what the President asked me to do. Reep’s calm, polite but resolute answer was, “tell Comrade Cheddi that if I have to choose between being a minister and being president of Dharmic Sabha, I will choose the latter”. Cheddi relented.

For standing his ground, on principle, Reep was able

to build his legacy not only at the political level, but as the indisputable leader of the Dharmic Sabha, which today is the main driving force behind the organisation and celebration of Diwali and all other Hindu events and festivities.

He was succeeded at the Sabha’s leadership by his daughter, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, who has followed in her father’s footsteps as a politician as well.

GRACE OF TOLERANCE Always modest, Reep took his own home-cooked food to Cabinet sessions, where he would occasionally share his “veges” and “Prasad”. He sat among other believers and non-believers, but he was never a religious dogmatist.

Once, when I found out that Reep was not well, I took to his house in Prashad Nagar an American-Indian, Jim Humble, who was a chiropractor and a proponent of Holistic Medicine. After we arrived at his house, I told Reep that Jim would say a Christian prayer, and I hoped he didn’t mind. Without hesitating, Reep assured me and Jim that he had no objection since, for him, “all prayers are to God”. Today, as we celebrate Diwali, let us banish narrow-mindedness, spite for and scorn towards our fellow human beings, whatever their beliefs or religion.

I ask Guyanese from all social strata to invite into their lives the symbolic radiance of Diwali, and to invigorate their soul with bright hopes, for unity and the grace of tolerance amongst all of our people.

The role of contractors in Guyana’s hiring boom

WITH more than 3,600 Guyanese employed in the oil and gas industry, more and more people are getting a glimpse of the complex, multi-layered contracting and operating system involved in developing an industrial project on the scale of offshore oil production.

While major operators are the primary mover, the sheer scope of costs, manpower needs and technical demands of development and production mean that other independent companies have a role to play. These are often brought on in the form of “contractors” or “subcontractors,” both of which will play a vital role here in developing Guyana’s offshore oil industry, as they do in virtually every other country with a major industrial development like oil and gas.

Those companies are usually a major driving force behind hiring booms in oil producing states, as has been the case here over the past year, with the number of Guyanese oil workers registered with the National Insurance Scheme increasing from 155 in 2018 to more than 20 times that number just a year later.

The challenges and dynamic nature of oil exploration and production necessitate this type of structure. Each stage of the process—from mapping the sea floor to assessing environmental impacts to maintaining production—requires vastly

different skill sets on an individual and institutional level. No single company or business can bring all of the necessary skills and expertise to bear. Instead, independent companies from around the world are brought in to perform those roles as contractors.

Different tasks at stages of production often demand starkly different academic specialties like oceanography, geology, mechanical and chemical engineering, biology and more. The contractors involved in each stage and each separate function are hired not only because they employ these specific experts, but because they have specialized knowledge and technical capabilities built over years of undertaking similar tasks.

There are also plenty of opportunities for non-technical workers – caterers, cleaners, security guards, drivers and many others – and independent companies from inside and outside Guyana play a role in providing this workforce. Because of the vastly different requirements of exploration and production, it is more economical and efficient to contract out some of the individual functions.

Hiring contractors also helps address the fluctuating labor needs of the industry.

While initial development requires high levels of manpower, it typically plateaus during production before rising again

during decommissioning. This makes it much easier for independent companies like Saipem, Schlumberger, or TechnipFMC to specialize in a few key roles at certain stages in the process and provide their services globally where and when they’re needed.

This specialization helps keep costs down, maximizing revenue for the host country and operating companies.

The operators that contract out that work, like Exxon and Tullow here in Guyana, have a major operational oversight role during the whole process, while also managing new developments and existing production across the oil field. Since safety and operational excellence are crucial for these operators, they provide strict guidelines and best practices that contractors must meet before receiving, and while executing, their contract.

Those contractors in turn often have their own contractors for many day-to-day functions like food service, cleaning, and hiring.

Many Guyanese will already be familiar with some of the recruitment and staffing agencies that have been established offices locally to serve the labor needs of the industry.

Staffing companies, such as Strategic Recruitment Services, help contractors to be more efficient and focussed on their primary mission by handling ancillary tasks like recruiting, interviewing and evaluating job candidates. Many of these companies also

depend on independent staffing companies to handle last minute needs for large numbers of temporary workers or one-time projects.

The kinds of opportunities available more broadly across the industry range from wildlife observers to welders, geologists to caterers. A quick scan of the public social media pages for the primary operator of the Stabroek Block, Exxon, shows posts for job opportunities with oilfield service contractor Schlumberger, environmental and project consultancy RPS Group and logistics company Tiger Tanks.

For now, the practices of these operators are largely governed by Guyana’s existing laws and a longstanding ecosystem of best practices and mutually observed standards throughout the industry. Since operators rely on the safety, accounting and legal practices of the companies they contract, standards are typically very strict.

But that should not be a reason for Guyana to rest on its laurels. Finalizing policies on things like regulation, taxation, safety, and local content could help give companies certainty on what practices to adhere to and what to steer clear of.

That kind of certainty helps companies make investment decisions that help Guyana in the long term like hiring locally, investing in new facilities and exploring new local partnerships.

The rise of small parties: Revolution and transformation are made of sterner stuff RECENTLY, we have seen a plethora of political parties being formed.

Almost to the point of national ridicule and comedic references, sighs and gasps of ‘another one’. While some have dismissed these democratic efforts as opportunistic and fraught with intricate plots by political parties to split the vote on either side, I dispute these conspiracy theories.

I am of the view that it is the manifestation of the blossoming of democracy under this government and the lack of concern about a vindictive state apparatus, a complete departure from what existed pre-2015. However, this is not the remit of this intervention.

At the heart of this documentation is the addressing of the talk of these new parties sparking some revolution or transformation.

This theorizing has struck me and being a student of history, I feel an academic obligation to go on the record with argumentation that pleads for caution against such reckless application of the concepts of revolution and transformation.

REVOLUTION AND TRANSFORMATION According to the Oxford Dictionary of Politics, revolution is defined as ‘the overthrow of an established order which

involves the transfer of state power from one leadership to another and may involve a radical restructuring of social and economic relations’. Transformation is defined as a complete change in the appearance or character of something. In the Guyana political context, both definitions can be summed up as meaning a complete overhaul in the social, economic and political system with a complete change in the character of Guyanese politics.

With just five months to go before national elections, suggesting that small parties will achieve this is far-fetched at best. Even when buttressed by the argument that all we need is one seat, I still see this as fanciful.

Firstly, Guyana is not a progressive society, traditional politics is entrenched. It will take catastrophic and cataclysmic forces of history to change this in five months. Secondly, while it is indeed possible to galvanize the people in a movement that brings sweeping change, you need pressing and attractive anti-establishment ideas to execute this. Ideas such as anti-corruption, anti-establishment fervor, a passionate fed-up of the system and most importantly, an economic crisis of sorts. The problem is, the regime has the most respected and incorruptible leaders in the form of the President and the Prime Minister, the regime

is representative of change with its approach to coalition politics and Guyana is on the cusp of unprecedented economic boom.

Those who seek to ignite revolution and transformation in five months, do not have key weapons that engender such upheaval.

Quite to the contrary, these factors are on the side of the regime.

In the words of the shrewd political strategist, Napoleon Bonaparte, ‘the pear is not ripe’.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POLITICAL PARTY AND A POLITICAL MOVEMENT In treating the main thrust of this discourse, it is necessary to highlight the important difference between a political party and a political movement in the context of revolution and transformation. A political party has a membership, structure and a predictable format with a clear leadership structure. A political movement is often a massive uniting of the masses under the umbrella of a sweeping national issue with no clear leadership and diverse interests, heavily fortified by a cause that results in the certain defeat of a regime.

The formation of a political party cannot take a country to this place, the political party is a mere vehicle through which these histor-

ical developments journey. Political parties cannot twist the arm of history and historical movements. These movements are driven by social, economic and political facts that are organic and emerge from the groundswell of public opinion. I am not a fan of Thomas Carlyle’s great man theory which argues history is driven by men. I am firmly in the Herbert spencer camp, ‘attributing historical events to the decisions of individuals is an unscientific position, ‘great men’ are merely products of their social environment.

CONCLUSION It is for the reasons argued above, caution needs to be applied to the usage of the words revolution and transformation as it relates to Guyana’s current political context 5 months away from elections by individuals and new formed political parties.

Nurse, teen die in Linden smash-up

Another Lindener, Tristan Clarke, an 18-yearold of Lot 4847 Central Amelia’s Ward Linden, also died in the accident.

According to the police report, at about 03:40 hours, motor pick-up PXX4739, which is an ambulance attached to Linden Hospital Complex and driven by 39-year-old Rametse Paul of 1045 Phase 1B Wisroc, Linden was heading in a southerly direction, when

His uncle, Dwayne Bristol, related that Clarke was a very jovial person and will be missed for his uplifting personality. “Whenever he comes around, he would change the entire mood of the room, he always made his presence felt. He was very

mannerly and disciplined,” Bristol related. Clarke was also a recognised athlete who represented Region 10 at several national sporting events. At the time of the accident, Clarke was on his way to visit his father in Amelia’s Ward.

Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, on Saturday morning, paid both families a visit and expressed her deepest condolences to them. She was joined by other senior staff of the Ministry of Health and Regional Officials including Regional Chairman, Renis Morian.

Lawrence then visited the Linden Hospital where she emphasised the need for specialised services such as CT scanning at all Regional Hospitals, to avoid medical personnel having to travel to the city, to accompany patients who need to access these services.

Fire leaves single mom, children homeless

A SINGLE mother and her three sons, of Spring Garden, Region Two, are now homeless after fire demolished her two-storey home on Friday night.

Seelochnie Sonia Singh was supporting the Spring Garden Mandir Diwali float, which was participating in the West Coast Demerara motorcade, when she received the sad news.

Still in shock, Singh related that around 18:30 hrs, she received a call from a

villager that her home was on fire. The mother said she became worried which caused her hypertension level to go up, preventing her from travelling home that evening.

She, however, arrived on the Essequibo Coast Saturday morning.

“When I visited my home, tears fell from my eyes, everything went, nothing save, all the TV, freezer, my passport, money, gold, everything went,” Singh said.

The traumatised woman said she lost all her house-

hold items, including freezers, television, microwave, sofa, jewellery and money.

“I worked so hard for my things; I lost my husband years ago. I used to sell cane juice and polourie for a living to get my things, I am so saddened. I have nowhere to stay, I only have my daughter in Parika and my son left to work in the backdam,” Singh told Guyana Chronicle.

Singh estimates her losses at around $15M. She is unaware what could have caused the fire but noted that she had only left on a bulb in

A report was made to the Suddie Police Station and the Anna Regina Fire Station has since launched an investigation to find out what might have caused the fire.

GPL submarine cable back in operation THE Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) said its 69kV submarine cable is back in operation following the successful completion of remedial works.

In a release, GPL said following its return to operation, approximately 14 Megawatt (MW) of power is being supplied to the Eastern Section of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS). The submarine cable, which links the Vreed-en-Hoop and Kingston Power Plants, sustained damage at two locations in June and August by vessels traversing the Demerara River.

Subsequently, repairs were carried out by China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CMC), the company that laid the cable in 2012.

GPL has requested the assistance of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) to advise mariners to exercise caution when operating in close proximity of the cable.

GYEITI advances public engagement mandate

THE Guyana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GYEITI) is working to ensure it engages more Guyanese including civil society and local organizations regarding its mandate.

This is according to National Coordinator of the GYEITI, Dr Rudy Jadoopat, who spoke exclusively with the Guyana Chronicle last Thursday on the midday programme,

Vantage Point.

“We have a lot more to do, quiet a lot more,” he said regarding engagement of the population in its work plans. “The trade unions, the media , the Opposition are all stakeholders in the process of transparency”, added.

To this end, he called on the public to help the process to be developed into something more “purposeful” for the country.

As he pointed to outcomes and impacts of the GYEITI’s mandate, he said the information in the body’s first annual report, which was released earlier this year, would be meaningless if it does not engage the public. “One of the functions of the EITI secretariat is to get the message out there to the population,” he said.

strengthen its awareness campaign. “We are looking forward to having more assistance in getting our reporting mechanism advanced and reporting facilities organized in such a way that we can have dissemination of our report and what the report data mean to a wide section of the population,” he said.

He said the school children, the professionals and the politicians, all “have to

be spoken to in a different way” as he explained that the body wishes to package its material in a manner to satisfy various sections of its audience.

He said the GYEITI is fortunate to have the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources which has been funding several of its outreaches.

The GYEITI also receives international funding including from the Carter Center and the United States Agency for international Development (USAID) as well as the international secretariat of the EITI. In October 2017, the GYEITI was accepted under the wings of the EITI and the body has been working to satisfy the standards and principles set out by that body.

‘Aim high, don’t settle for less’ … Skeldon Line Path CSEC graduates told

GRABBING three of the top spots for Berbice at this year’s CSEC examinations, the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School (SLSS) had lots to celebrate as 52 young minds graduated on Friday from the school.

Located on the Upper Corentyne area, Skeldon Linepath Secondary has, over the past four years, been on an upward trajectory moving from a 76 per cent in 2016 to 80.4 per cent passes in 2019, to secure them a coveted spot among the top five schools in Region Six. In delivering her remarks, Headmistress Evett Johnson credited the success to the hardworking staff of the school and the support of the many organisations and individuals who have been supporting the school. She noted that despite the many challenges, the school has been able to make the most of their limited resources and improve their performance from the previous year not only academically, but also being able to cop several coveted prizes in extracurricular activities as well.

Among the things she noted needed urgent attention were the main building which she deemed antiquated and in urgent need of modernisation, as well as the science laboratory that needed an overhaul. Taking up the challenge from the Headmistress, Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi, who last year set up the Dr. Amarnauth Dukhi Foundation to assist students from his alma mater, who cannot afford tertiary education, announced that the foundation will adopt the science lab. He also delivered on his promise to Yugeeta Kumar, the 2018 top student, to fund her tertiary education.

Kumar became the first recipient of the prize from the foundation and as such, the cheque for the full tuition was handed over to her at the graduation ceremony.

The brilliant young lady is presently pursuing a degree in biochemistry at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus.

The neurosurgeon, who was the guest of honor charged with delivering the motivational speech, said the foundation will make the lab the most modern in the region and the country. His sentiments were received with a thunderous applause from the audience. In his remarks, which centered on sacrifice and the future, Dukhi urged the graduates to remain grounded as they bask in the success they achieved. He noted that their achievements at this point will help to shape their future.

“Students, your work and efforts today are going to fill a large part of your life tomorrow. The only way to be truly satisfied

is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Find the fun in your journey here at high school and remember that tables turn, barriers overcome, we live and learn, and most times it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.”

He continued that the journey has just begun and despite some sacrifices made so far, there will be more that are required along the way as they look to the future.

He urged the students to reflect not only on their personal sacrifices, but also on that made by their parents who gave the gift of life and provided sustenance and as well as their teachers, whose guidance was instrumental in helping them to be successful at the examinations. Dr. Dukhi reminded the students that their future begins today and they should be prepared to face many obstacles along the way to success. “It’s not enough to simply try to get by in life, that doesn’t move the world forward. You must try to excel in everything you do, strive for excellence in every task, be it large or small, it will make a difference in society…” Dukhi said.

Meanwhile, Regional Chairman David Armogan, in delivering the feature address, commended the school for its success and reminded the graduands and those present of the important role education plays in their lives. “Education is the foundation upon which you build your individual career and upon which you can build a successful country. Education takes people out of poverty, we have many Guyanese who are operating in many parts of the world and are excelling because of their education.”

Armogan urged the graduands to look towards the emerging oil and gas sector and position themselves to reap the benefits instead of sticking with the traditional sectors. “We have to take advantage by educating and gearing ourselves for the opportunities that will become available in those sectors. We have a way of sticking with tradition, what we know about and what we believe in that is what we hold on to all the time and we don’t want to endeavour into something new, well the world has no place for that anymore. The word is a dynamic world, it is ever changing, science and technology is advancing at a pace that we can’t believe and if we can’t advance with them we will be left behind,” Armogan stated.

Gov’t invested millions to push agriculture development in Rupununi … Holder tells residents at opening of regional expo

AGRICULTURE is undoubtedly one of the most important sectors in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region (Region Nine), with close to 4,000 acres of non-traditional crops under cultivation and large herds of cattle being reared.

It is home to some of the best examples of agriculture byproducts, agro-processing and agro-tourism.

On Friday last, the region

Similar facilities are scheduled to be constructed in Kumu and Shulinab at a cost of $28M. ‘The neglected ID cards’ … PPP continues objections to removing ‘phantom’ ID card holders from voters list

THE Opposition’s Peoples Progressive Party continues its objection to the removing, from the voters’ list, thousands of persons who, since 2008, registered but never uplifted their ID cards.

Some commissioners at the Guyana Elections Commission believe that these persons might be part of a scheme by the opposition to rig the upcoming elections. “Why are they not collecting their ID cards… thousands of ID cards and the opposition is arguing for them to remain on the list,” a commissioner, who asked not be named, reasoned.

At a previous statutory meeting of GECOM, a proposal was also made for the thousands of persons who were registered in 2008 but have not yet collected their ID cards, to be excluded from the OLE. In explaining this proposal too, Commissioner Vincent Alexander said: “It’s like an objection. So, the issue is not the ID card, the issue is that these persons,

since 2008 and beyond 2008 have not, in any way, presented themselves to be present; to be known; to be alive; to be existing; to be resident. And, in calling them, writing to them gives us the opportunity to make

At the October 15, GECOM statutory meeting, Commissioners also noted that a proposal was made for the names of persons, who did not participate in the house-to-house registration exercise but are on the Preliminary List, be highlighted on the Official List of Electors (OLE).

These highlighted names would be on high alert for staff at polling stations on March 2, 2020 to ensure that no multiple and substitute voting takes place.

“All it means is that you’re creating an awareness of people whose whereabouts are unknown and we’re therefore trying to create a greater alertness at the polling station when people come to vote with those names because, as we have said at the very inception, a bloated list provides the opportunity for multiple and substitute voting and so we need to be alert about the names

which can be used for the purpose,” Commissioner Vincent Alexander had explained.

However, the Opposition Leader stated on Thursday: “That should have been shut down almost immediately but still it is a matter for discussion…these things should not confuse the electorate.”

He claimed that these persons will be exposed to “discriminatory treatment” and biases from Presiding Officers on elections day and should have also been shut down by the Chair.

Jagdeo has since requested clarity from Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh on matters relating to international oversight and the highlighting and removal of names on the Voters List.

At his press conference on Thursday, he called for the Chairman to provide clarity on the decisions made following each meeting of the Commission as he stated that the messages coming

A key matter he requested clarification on was the Commission’s perusal of international oversight mechanism for GECOM’s Information Technology (IT) Department. “UNDP, for a long time now, has made available their services of someone to have oversight in the IT department and that within GECOM there seems to be a consistent refusal to accept help in the IT Department that is oversight over the IT Department,” Jagdeo said.

The Leader of the Opposition stated further that the Commission, heading in to the new elections, should accept international oversight from every possible avenue. He stated: “I would have thought by now, having been there for a while that the Chairman would have by now ensured that the decisions are made –these are simple decisions---about an international presence in GECOM as a quality control mechanism to ensure that nobody tampers with the List; nobody within GECOM disenfranchises any Guyanese…clearly, by now we should have had the clarity on this issue.”

Lindeners prefer new Wismar Bridge at old site … as consultant tests social, environmental impacts of project on community

By Vanessa Braithwaite LINDENERS were on Thursday consulted on the social and environmental impact the construction of the new Wismar to Mackenzie bridge, would bring to the neighbouring communities and township as a whole.

The consultation was hosted by Politecnica – the consultancy firm hired by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure. In his presentation to a packed audience, Environmental Specialist, Marciano Glasgow, related that the task of the consultancy is to prepare the final design of the bridge based on a detailed feasibility study, which is presently being done, as well as bid documents.

Lindeners were told that no site or design was decided on thus far and therefore the consultation is to give them a chance to impact the final decision. In expressing their

choice for the site, many Lindeners leaned towards the bridge being constructed in close proximity to the existing bridge, somewhere along the West Watooka corridor. Others requested that the bridge be constructed at the Christianburg area.

Whatever site is chosen, the residents stressed on the need for sufficient space for vehicles, especially large trucks to turn and to avoid traffic build up around the area, as is occurring now at the existing bridge.

The consultants also explained that there may be need to move structures to accommodate the construction. Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) branch manager, Rawle Friday, revealed that the water treatment equipment is close to the proposed site and it is very important to consider the disruption of this equipment during construction. If this is done, he said, water distribution on the Wismar

shore will be severely affected. The consultants noted his point and held further discussions with him.

Relative to the environmental impact, the Environmental Protection Agency was also present at the meeting and a representative spoke of the role the organisation is playing in ensuring the environment is not severely affected by the construction. With pile driving and other works that will be done during construction, residents voiced their concern of how this would affect nearby houses and more importantly, the present bridge’s operation.

For the design, those present preferred the bridge to be durable and wide enough to take on heavy-duty vehicles such as lumber trucks, which are a regular feature in Linden. The bridge, they requested, should also be high enough to accommodate bauxite ships and be disabil-

With the current issue of trucks traversing the existing bridge overweight, it was suggested that scales be placed at both ends of the bridge. The residents also spoke of how accessing infrastructure should match the width of the bridge to accommodate the influx of traffic that is expected in the mining town, with the

construction of the Linden to Lethem Road.

The new bridge will be built according to AASHTO standards and will have two lanes and walkways. It should be suitable for the passage of vessels on the river. Presently the study is in task 2(b), which includes the environmental and social impact analysis. Following that the draft design, the final design and two workshops will take place. Politecnica

is an Italian firm and the team working on the bridge consists of key experts such as a structural engineer, geotechnical engineer, transport economist, social and gender specialist, and an environmental and management specialist.

The consultants promised to return to Linden to hold a future consultation based on the preliminary design and proposed location.

Small businesses growing in Linden

THE President David Granger-led administration, over the past four years, has pumped millions of dollars into government financial agencies to support small businesses and to stimulate village economies.

While the government was unable to provide widespread job opportunities, it has made significant strides

at 70 per cent. Since taking office, the government has pumped $155M in 2015, $100M in 2016, $90M in 2017 and $200M in 2018, into the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN).

In addition to this lending institution for Region 10 only, the Small Business Bureau has also injected a significant amount in grants and loans for Lindeners.

“I use to work bus and then I realise everybody start working bus, then I started selling drinks and that became popular too and somebody told me to try something local. I go and sleep on it and I spent some time and I decided to try it. I started by grinding the cane home and coming out and sell it in bag, like

around 20 something. Then I realise it started catching on and more people started coming so I brought my machine out here and grind it out here myself,” he said.

DOING WELL Today, Charles’ business has expanded to the point where he has up to 30 different suppliers of cane.

He has also extended to selling fresh orange juice, all in his bid of promoting healthy drinking. Charles then started setting goals for himself. He wanted to set up a clean and customer friendly environment, where he can sell his beverages; he still sells sweet drinks. “Thanks to the government, I got a grant from Small Business Bureau and a loan from LEN and I was able to set up my establishment here, buy my freezer; buy other machinery and so. In life you got to plan, you have to know what you want in the next three years, in the next five years,” Charles said.

He is also encouraging young persons and the unemployed to take pride out of their eyes, be themselves and do not try to please people.

“Don’t look at what you would like to sell, but what is in demand and you will never fail,” he said. With his business, Charles is able to adequately provide for his three children and wife. His next goal is to have employees and start a double shift operation.

Victoria preparing for 180th Anniversary celebrations

VICTORIA, the first village bought by freed Africans, is preparing to celebrate its 180th Anniversary in a big way on November 9.

Diwali showcased in all its splendor DIWALI has been a part of Guyanese culture since 1974, featuring colourful and eye-catching floats, giving representation of the story of Diwali, and this year, it was no different.

Thousands of persons

took to the streets to celebrate the festival and take in the wonderfully floats, all of which depicted the significance of the festival.

As per normal, the grand motorcade began at the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbell-

ville and from there, the decorated floats made their way along Sandy Babb Street, on the journey to the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Community Centre Ground.

All of the elements were represented during the night’s

proceedings, including the sounds of tassa drums which could be heard from the floats as they made their way to the LBI Ground.

The spectators who lined the roads to see the floats

were mesmerised by not only the music, but also the various depictions of Mother Lakshmi, the goddess of light and prosperity with whom the festival is most associated.

Many could have eas-

ily understood the story of Diwali by looking at the floats. As happened over the years, the motorcade attracted a mammoth gathering of persons from all walks of life.

Thousands participate in GTT cancer awareness march

THOUSANDS of patrons crowded D’Urban Park at the dawn of Saturday, clad in their pink attire to walk and run in solidarity with cancer awareness.

The event started at D’Urban Park, then moved to the kitty roundabout and back to D’Urban Park. The walk/run, which is part of GTT’s annual Pinktober calendar of activities, is aimed at mobilising funds for several cancer-related organisations.

This year, the support surpassed those of previous years, as was confirmed by Pinktober 2019 Coordinator, Diana Gittens. Gittens said that the final count isn’t confirmed, but a significant spike was noted. “We are still finalising our counts for this year but we have noted a tremendous increase in the number of Guyanese who came out to support us. This year, some of our survivors were provided special accommodation so that even if they could not walk, they could still interact and feel a part of this exciting activity,” she said.

People of all ethnicities, religion and culture joined in unison with the activities, starting the morning off with some warm-up exercises from gym instructors, and ended with a performance from local artiste, Calvin Burnett. Despite the aim of the activity, the crowd was energised and happy during their participation in the activities. Speaking with a few of the happy people at the venue, everyone expressed sentiments of gratitude to GTT for affording everyone the opportunity

to contribute to saving lives.

Gittens told the Guyana Chronicle that even though the month of activities is tailored mostly to breast cancer, other forms of cancer were incorporated. “We intend to increase our focus on the other kinds of cancer and although the event was branded pink, we support and recognised all the types of cancer this year,” she said.

She noted, too, that “Next year, we are also looking at increasing participation in the run as the time tracking system this year was exciting as the runners were happy to print their results at the finish line. Pinktober is here to stay and we will work diligently towards empowering NGOs to cater to the cancer care needs of Guyana.”

Other activities from GTT during the month of awareness included a Cancer Care Symposium that allowed various stakeholders to share their challenges and success and allowed them to identify priority areas for funding; a Novelty football match that was done in collaboration with the Guyana Football Federation, and was focused on promoting physical activity as we note that physical inactivity is one of the risk factor for cancer; and a Live Aware, Live Beautiful Initiative, which allowed GTT to honour survivors, caregivers and patients.

The month is not over and Gittens disclosed that in the upcoming weeks, GTT will continue honoring cancer survivors, patients and caregivers.

Guyana Chronicle cops 18 awards at GPA ceremony

THE Guyana Chronicle copped 18 awards including the Prestigious Young Journalist of the Year at the 2019 Guyana Press Association (GPA) Awards Ceremony held at the Pegasus Hotel on Saturday evening.

The state newspaper has won the Young Journalist of the Year award for the third consecutive year. The

award was given to Vishani Ragobeer, who is currently pursuing studies at the University of the West Indies.

This year there were 18 categories, one category was dropped due to what the judges said were poor quality of entries. This year there were almost 260 entries with some 35 persons entering.

The sport categories, based on suggestions and demands

last year, only received three entries this year.

The overall winner was Ms. Ragobeer, who received the winning prizes for Coverage of Human Rights Issues and Investigative Reporting, along with the winning prize for Young Journalist of the Year. Additionally she received third place for coverage of Science and Technology issues and third

“What we know for sure it is going to be an even testier period in the not so near future. With Guyana on the cusp of new economic wealth, possible paradigm shifts and political twist and turns, we encourage you to stay true to the profession,” Chabrol told the gathering.

The GPA executive further called on journalist to commit to providing the truth to the readers, listeners and audience, with unbiased facts and nothing else. Additionally, Chabrol, on behalf of the GPA and its executive, called on Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Retired Justice Claudette Singh and Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield, to be accessible to the media in this crucial period heading towards general elections. “We are tired of hearing from who can best be termed political representatives with vested interests on the Guyana Elections Commission.

It is time for the Chairman of GECOM and GECOM’s CEO to brief the media to avoid confusion and misinterpretation in the minds of voters,” the GPA official said.

St Agnes, North Georgetown advance to COURTS Pee Wee finals

By Stephan Sookram ST AGNES and North Georgetown advanced to the final of the 2019 edition of COURTS Pee Wee Football tournament following yesterday’s semi-final round.

Both games ended 2-0 but took vastly different paths at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.

In the first semi-final, North Georgetown took the fight to Genesis from the opening whistle, tormenting the opposition ’keeper who was stellar between the uprights in keeping the score line decent.

North Georgetown made it no secret that they were shooting for goals by any means necessary, sometimes shooting from half field to break the deadlock.

Genesis, on the other hand, had a few tries go wide of the post with their best chance being a loose ball down the flank which was side-footed wide.

Jaheim Gillard would break the eventual deadlock in the 28th minute and North Georgetown continued trying the goal.

Kevin Burton in the 38th doubled the score line just before the whistle to make North Georgetown the first team into the final.

Under the setting sun, however, a battle ensued for the second spot.

Tucville went toe-to-toe

with St Agnes, quite literally, as they traded shot for shot in the opening minutes.

And while there was no shortage of shots, there were no goals as both goalkeepers kept their sides in the game.

The first half and then regulation time ended with no goals scored and the tournament went into the extra time.

Eventually, Shane Darlymple (40+3) and Celon London (40+8) put the game out of the reach of favourites Tucville.

Earlier in the day, in the 13-16 category, St Stephen won via walkover from Craig while Enterprise won via walkover from Uitvlugt In the 9-12 division, Mae’s went down to St Ambrose 1-2 with Elijah Bynoe scoring for the losers and LeAndre Carr 35th and 38th scoring twice for the winners.

Redeemer were 3-1 winners over Marian Academy thanks to Nickolas Watts’ hat-trick of goals in the 10th, 12th and 38th while Emanuel Francois scored for the losers.

Soesdyke 2 needed extra time to beat Timehri 2-1 in the 5-8 playoff with Shaquille Caleb in the 17th and 40+6 being the hero while Nyron Barrow (36th) scored for Soesdyke.

St Pius also beat West Ruimveldt 2-1 with Jamal Fraser scoring in the 40th and 40+2 despite Cleon LaRose scoring in the 39th.

The final will take place next weekend.

Griffith wins feature event at Payless Cycling meet

By Faizool Deo` CHRISTOPHER Griffith stormed to victory in the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational race yesterday at the eighth annual Payless Variety Store cycling race on the Inner Circuit at the National Park in Georgetown.

Griffith, who beat off Michael Anthony and Jamual John for the top spot in a sprint finish, registered a staggering time of 1:14:45.60. In fact, the top three finishers who all clocked under one hour and 15 minutes were way ahead of the last year’s top finish of 1:17:44.94 by Briton John.

Briton John, who suffered mechanical problems bowed out of the race early.

It was Jamual who took the early lead and eventually Anthony and Griffith joined him. They stayed together until a few hundred metres from the finish line and Griffith won the sprint to register his first win of the season.

The 23-year-old said that the trio decided to ride as a team in preparation for next month’s Caribbean Cycle Championships in Cuba.

During their stint together, they lapped the entire field.

Paul De Nobrega finished fourth and Curtis Dey

fifth.

Jamual John captured four prime prizes, while Griffith and Anthony nabbed two each.

In the 10 laps, Juveniles, Sherwin Sampson finished ahead of Shamaul Young and Emmanuel Redd, while Junior Niles claimed victory ahead of Lear Nunes and Kwamie Ridley in a time of 29:38.53 in the Veterans U-50 five laps race.

Andrew Spencer won the five-lap Veteran Over50 race ahead of Ian Jackson and Kennard Lovell.

Meanwhile , in the BMX Boys 6-9 years old two laps, Lennox Jackman got the better of William Green.

England storm All Blacks citadel to reach Rugby World Cup final

By Ossian Shine TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) - All Blacks? This Rugby World Cup semi-final was all white.

In Yokahama yesterday, it took just over a minute for England to breach New Zealand’s rugby citadel. By the end of 80 minutes they had well and truly sacked it.

Eddie Jones’ England players played with breathtaking power and precision to win 19-7, a result that not only puts them within touching distance of a second World Cup crown, but arguably re-calibrates world rugby’s pecking order.

“New Zealand are the gods of rugby so we had to take it to them and put them on the back foot as much as we could,” smiled Jones.

New Zealand were battered in possession, taunted by England’s superb handling, and kicked to shreds by George Ford. How they must have wished for the boot of Dan Carter or the Richie McCaw-ness of Richie McCaw. Instead, almost 69 000 rugby fans witnessed that most rare of sporting apparitions - an outfought, outplayed and flustered New Zealand team.

“We were beaten by the better team,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said. “Take it on the chin. Hard to stomach but this is what happens in sport sometimes. Sometimes sport isn’t fair but tonight it was.”

Other teams have confronted the haka in novel ways before, but most of them have gone on to lose.

HAKA CONFRONTED Not this England side, though, and with less than 100 seconds on the clock, a magnificent flurry of passing ended in centre Manu Tuilagi, punching through the All Blacks’ defence from close range for a try.

Dominant England wasted a handful of chances, but added to their score just before the break through a George Ford penalty.

That half must have made for uncomfortable viewing for the whole of New Zealand as

their All Blacks went in trailing 10-0, although some might have felt relief that the deficit was so small.

Their reputation of the greatest teams in any sport has been hard won, however, and it was perhaps inevitable England would have been made to pay for some wasted chances.

Sure enough, just before the hour flanker Ardie Savea nipped in to touch down when England’s otherwise impressive lineout was caught dozing, and Richie Mo’unga converted. So much for all the play and all the pressure!

Enter that man Ford. Taking over the kicking from a limping Farrell, he ended up slotting four penalties for 12 points while New Zealand failed to add to their tally, and England eased to the finish line.

This New Zealand performance was ultimately characterised by poor discipline, moments of anger and some hot-headed decisions. Understandably, perhaps! The All Blacks are not used to losing.

But there was nothing even their inventive play could have done to prevent being smothered by England’s white blanket.

For the All Blacks it will be time for reflection and rebuilding, while England reached their fourth World Cup final and first since 2007.

They will meet either Wales or South Africa in the November 2 showpiece, seeking their second victory after 2003 when they became the first, and to date only, northern hemisphere country to claim rugby’s biggest prize.

GCC humiliate Third Class, bowl them out for 15 runs in 40-over clash

Stephon Wilson took 4-6 from five overs for GCC. GEORGETOWN Cricket Club (GCC) destroyed Third Class by 10 wickets yesterday when action continued in the New Building Society (NBS) 40over second-division cricket competition between the two teams at the Bourda ground.

The Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) also registered an easy win at home, when they challenged Diplomats Sports Club.

At Bourda, it took just 10.4 overs and two bowlers to send Third Class crashing after the defending champions GCC won the toss and opted to field.

Medium pacer Carlos LaRose and left-arm spinner Stephon Wilson did the damage.

SIX RUNS OFF THE BAT None of the Third Class batsmen settled and the home team bowler just dropped the ball in the right spots. Seven of the dismissals were either via lbw or clean-bowled.

Extras accounted for over half of the 15 runs. In fact, only

six runs came off the bat, with eight wides and one leg-bye.

Two batsmen finished with two runs each, while two scored singles, the rest lost their wickets without scoring.

Almost $2M up for grabs in feature clash of Kennard’s Memorial Boxing Day meet

A FIRST place cash prize of $1M and consolation prizes of $875 000 for the three next best finishers will be up for grabs in the feature event of the Kennard’s Memorial Boxing Day horse race meet.

The Metro Million Mile Open can be contested by any horse and will be the feature event on December 26. Entrance fee is set at $123 000 per horse.

The second-place winner will

receive $500 000, third place $250 000 and fourth place $125 000.

Seven races are carded for the day with almost $4M up for grabs at the Bush Lot Farm, in Corentyne, Berbice.

Windsor Park returns as international venue in busy 2020 home schedule

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – Windsor Park is set to return as a venue for West Indies’ home schedule next year when it hosts two limited overs fixtures on the New Zealand tour, as the region braces for a heavy itinerary which will also see tours by South Africa and minnows Ireland.

The venue suffered damage when deadly Category Five Hurricane Maria devastated Dominica two years ago, leaving hundreds of millions in damage and over 31 people dead.

Windsor Park had its last taste of international cricket earlier in 2017 when Pakistan beat West Indies on a dramatic final day of the last Test.

Having returned to the domestic schedule this year when it staged a first class match between Windward Islands Volcanoes and Leeward Islands Hurricanes back in February, the venue will play host to one ODI and a T20 International – one of 11 West Indies are expected to play ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year.

West Indies will welcome Ireland at the start of next

After touring England for three Tests in June, West Indies will return to the Caribbean to take on number two-ranked New Zealand in another limited overs series of three ODIs and T20 Internationals.

The tour, which runs from July 8 to 19, will see the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua staging the opening two ODIs, with the last ODI and the first T20I heading to Windsor Park.

South Africa will arrive immediately on New Zealand’s departure for their first Caribbean series in nearly a decade, to play two Tests and five T20 Internationals from July 15 to August 16.

Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad will stage the first Test while the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground will host the second, before teams head to Central Broward Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for the opening two T20s.

Sabina Park in Jamaica will be the stage for the last three matches of the series.

Significantly, Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad and the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium are set to be crowned as international venues during the 2021 home schedule when they host T20s involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively.

West Indies Women, meanwhile, will host South Africa in May next year and are expected to play a minimum of 15 ODIs – home and away – in preparation for the 50-overs Women’s World Cup in 2021.

Savory laser-focussed on improving game, following Jaguars call-up

GUYANA Jaguars new cap, Kemol Savory, says he’s more engrossed than ever on upping his cricket, after being named in the team for the upcoming Colonial Medical Insurance Cup, which bowls off on November 7.

Savory, Essequibo wicketkeeper/ batsman, is one of two fresh faces in the team with the other being pacer Nial Smith. He was the leading run-scorer for the Jaguars 50 Overs League which ended last Thursday and was subsequently named in the 14-man team; on Friday when Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) released the squad for the Regional 50 Overs tournament which is being played in Trinidad.

Kemol Savory is one of the new faces in the Guyana Jaguars team for the upcoming Cricket West Indies/ Colonial Medical Insurance 50 Overs Cup.

Guyana Chronicle Sport caught up with the classy left-hander after his call-up and the Essequibian said despite being joyful over his selection, he was more eager to do more to keep his cricket at a high level.

“The feeling was great, especially putting in all the hard work over the years and now being rewarded. But my plan right now is to focus on my game, play basic cricket so if I get the opportunity to play in the Cup I can hopefully help Guyana win the title after a few years,” said Savory.

With 337 runs from the 7 rounds in the Jaguars League, the lefthander racked up scores of 81, 37, 32, 84, 51, 46 and 6. He continued to progress as he followed up 2019

with another strong performance, coming off of the 2018 season where he had knocks of; 103, 39, 56, 30, 28, 44* and 62.

With the gloves, the former Guyana Under-19 player ended with 15 dismissals in last year’s tourney, but bettered his feats this season as he ended with 18 victims - a true testament to his improving athleticism and clean glove-work behind the stumps.

“It was very important to be consistent especially when you’re looking for your first call up,” said Savory who acquired more runs off the bat this season and continued exceptional wicketkeeping as factors which aided in his selection.

With Anthony Bramble being Guyana and, possibly, the

Caribbean/West Indies next big wicket-keeper/batsman, given his talents, the chances of Savory becoming the future of Guyana’s ’keeping is likely, especially with just a handful of players who could fit into a similar role.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old said that despite all the good fortune, he’s not fazed by doing too much and plans on sticking to his training regime and putting in the work when he steps out in the middle.

He further credited Safraz Sheriffudeen, CEO of VNET for his continued support and sponsorship, which he has provided over the years.

Twelve matches to kick-start Hamilton Green Birthday football TWELVE exciting matches will kick-start the opening day of competition to commemorate the 85th Birth Anniversary 9-a-side knockout Inter-Ward Football Tournament.

New champions to be crowned when Riddim Squad and Vurlon Mills Academy collide

NEW champions would be crowned when the 4th edition of the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) Under-11 League, sponsored by USA-based Guyanese Ralph Green, comes to an end with the final next Saturday at the GFF National Training Centre, Providence, EBD. In yesterday’s semi-finals, defending champions Timehri Panthers were defeated 2-0 by a confident Riddim Squad outfit in the second semifinal. Vurlon Millis Academy trounced Kuru Kururu Warriors 5-0 in the first.

The young Warriors were not in a mood to war and fell prey to the consistent offensive manoeuvres by Vurlon Mills Academy lads.

Shackel Marshall sent them on their way in the seventh minute, with that advantage being doubled one minute later when Malcolm Hendricks rocked the nets.

At the halfway mark it was a 2-0 advantage for Mills Academy, who maintained their goal-scoring ambitions in the second half.

Romario La Rose further increased the advantage in the 19th minute and quickly thereafter, Negus Frank (21st) and Shaquille Dalrymple (22nd) sealed the deal as they marched into the championship match and will come up against the Mo-

cha-based, Riddim Squad.

Riddim Squad, a welloiled unit, will be formidable opponents for Vurlon Mills Academy. Both teams are unbeaten to date but one will surely lose on the final day. Defending champions Timehri Panthers could not find the antidote to keep Riddim Squad team at bay for too long.

The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute thanks

to a Matthew Murray goal. The deal was sealed in the 22nd minute when Riddim Squad leading scorer Jaheam Lewis netted his fourth goal of the tournament.

On Saturday, the third place match will commence at 09:00hrs with the final at 09:45hrs at the same venue. Sponsor Ralph Green will be making the trip home to witness both matches and be part of the presentation ceremony after the matches.

Apart from replica trophies for the top two teams, third- and fourthplaced will receive medals. Selectors name uncapped duo in Windies Women squad to face India … Still no place for Hayley Matthews ST JOHN’S, (CMC) – Leading opener Hayley Matthews has been left out of a 14-member West Indies squad to face touring India Women in the first two One-Day Internationals of the three-match series which bowls off here next Friday.

The 21-year-old Barbadian was suspended last month just days before the start of Australia’s tour of the Caribbean for what Cricket West Indies (CWI) described as a breach of its Code of Conduct, and CMC Sports understands she is still not eligible to return to the side.

The matter was subsequently referred to the CWI Disciplinary Tribunal but there has been no word on the outcome.

Matthews, an elegant right-hander who bowls steady off-spin, has become a fixture in the international side and was a member of the squad which captured the T20 World title in India three years ago.

Without her services, West Indies looked a shadow of themselves against Australia recently, suffering a 3-0 whitewash in both the one-day and T20 series.
