E-Networks expands fibre-optic services

— rolls out 4G internet in Kuru Kururu

ONE of Guyana’s fastest-growing telecommunications services provider, E-Networks Inc., has expanded its operations even further with the recent launch of its 4G internet services at Kuru Kururu, on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

The company, within 18 months, has extended its “fibre-optic backbone” to Berbice, Linden, and Essequibo, with the first-ever submarine fibre-optic cable to Essequibo, creating the largest fibre-optic backbone in the country.

According to a press release from E-Networks, the company now connects more regions in Guyana with fibre than any other telecommunications pro-

vider.

Its latest expansion of services to Kuru-Kururu is an extension of the company’s expansion to Linden, which saw a build-out of a fibre-optic cable from Georgetown to the mining town in December 2021.

Residents of Kuru Kururu could now access the same fast, reliable, and affordable 4G internet service available in Georgetown and other areas countrywide for $7,900 monthly.

E-Networks’ Chief Executive Officer, Vishok Persaud, said that with the country’s largest fibre-optic backbone, E-Networks has delivered a significant boost in fibre optic, 4G and 5G connectivity to six towns and many rural

areas.

The company has also rolled out more reliable and improved internet services to places that exclusively relied on dated technologies, providing faster speeds than previously available – all at lower prices.

He emphasised that all services countrywide are comparable, noting: “Whether you’re in Georgetown, Kuru Kururu, Essequibo, Berbice or Linden, all our services are the same quality. We make sure all Guyanese have access to first-world technology, regardless of where they are.”

Vice-Chairman of the L a m a h a / Ya r r o w k a b r a Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Michelle Drepaul-Harrinaraine, applauded the management of E-Networks for offering the service to the community.

“It is a necessity for residents, especially our students, as a number of them attend various universities through online classes, so it is beneficial to them and by extension, the community,” Drepaul-Harrinaraine rea-

soned.

She added that prior to E-Networks, the “poor internet services” there caused immense inconvenience to students, resulting in missed classes. She said the community now looks forward to exceptional connectivity from E-Networks.

Kuru Kururu businessman, Hubert Smith, recognised the importance of connectivity for his business.

“In this 21st century connectivity is key in pushing our business forward and on that front, we are grateful to E-Networks,” he said.

With internet access becoming the crucial link to education, work, entertainment, and connecting with family and friends, especially during the pandemic, E-Networks as the only locally owned company in the sector has improved access, affordability, and quality of services to Guyanese across a wider geographical area.

“These new areas include rural communities and not just towns or commercial hubs. For far too long, many parts of Guyana’s coast, especially in the rural areas and Essequibo, have been neglected by the other providers.

In 2021, E-Networks also enhanced connectivity available to businesses and unveiled Guyana’s fastest internet package: 1,000 Gbps, which rivals offerings available internationally and in the region.

This connectivity enables Guyanese businesses to leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as the cloud and other platforms, to enhance productivity and efficiency, especially in the banking, financial, insurance and entrepreneurial industries.

Owing to E-Networks’ aggressive expansion during 2021, the telecommunications sector was able to derive tangible benefits from liberalisation – namely better services and lower pricing.

Prior to the company’s access to its own independent, international cable, Guyana’s telecommunications sector was plagued by oppressive pricing for substandard services.

Post-liberalisation,

SQUATTERS in Linden who were obstructing a new access road slated for entry into a new housing scheme in Amelia’s Ward will receive housing units or house lots.

This was revealed on Monday when officials from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) intervened to determine amicable solutions for all parties.

The Housing Ministry plans to develop Amelia’s Ward for hundreds of residents. Three contracts totalling $364M were signed for the development of over 400 lots that were allocated.

Last Sunday, videos on social media showed that some structures erected by the squatters at Amelia’s Ward were being demolished by local housing authorities.

Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal said the issue of squatting in Amelia’s Ward has been ongoing, and

is being encouraged.

“Many persons know the area is for development, and there is an encouragement of squatting; they put their own posts, their own barbwire fence, and in some cases chain-linked fences, and they have shifted those boundaries, knowing fully well that we gave a commitment to regularise the area,” he noted.

The Housing Ministry, Minister Croal explained, has been in contact with squatters, and there was a commitment for squatting not to expand.

“We asked them not to continue anymore expansion or infrastructure work, because we have a plan for the area, and we have an alignment for the road; any area that you regularise that not everybody can fall into place,” he said.

Minister Croal said when an occupational survey is done, it takes into consideration where all persons

are, and then a design is formulated to develop the area with little encumbrance. “In any regularisation, somebody will be disturbed,” he said.

“What we have now are political operatives stymieing development in Region 10. In addition to that, we have a massive plan for infrastructure and development in the region, and the only clearance made is for the access road,” Minister Croal said.

Meanwhile, CH&PA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sherwyn Greaves said his engagement with squatters and residents on Monday “was very fruitful and engaging”.

“I am pleased they were very receptive,” he said.

He noted, too, that the reason for the actions that were taken was explained.

“You see, we can’t stop progress, and these structures weren’t there when

we visited in December.

And because they were new structures, and they fell directly where the access roads were going, as a result, they had to be removed,” Greaves said.

However, he noted that those persons who were removed will be allocated house lots in other locations.

“We understand that sometimes there is a necessity, but we cannot tolerate squatting, because, right now what is happening, early last year we would have allocated 400 house lots in the Amelia’s Ward area, and we cannot give those persons access to those lots, because of the persons who are squatting now. And we have to find a way to maneuver around them, and we can’t continue doing that, because we have to constantly change our plans because of that; it is unfair to those 400 persons,” the CEO explained.

As a result, he noted that action was taken, and the housing authority will work with the 16 persons, and alternative lots and residences will be found for them.

“At the end of the day, everybody agreed that we will move forward positively,” he noted.

that in December 2020, a team was sent into the area to compile an inventory on all the structures in the location. Some 152 structures were found.

“When we say structures, some are fences, some are foundations, some may be just pickets put up, and some are actual houses. In this 16 that was removed, two were occupied, and those two persons will be allocated houses, and others will be allocated lots,” Greaves said.

Over 300 investors, organisations registered for Agri-Investment Forum & Expo will be coming from the Caribbean, Israel, Ghana, Cameroon, United States, Canada and the Caribbean among other countries.

THE stage has been set for the inaugural AgriInvestment Forum & Expo, with over 300 investors and organisations already registered.

The forum will be held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on May 19 to 21, 2022.

ter Zulfikar Mustapha, who was accompanied by stakeholders on a site visit on Monday, said a large majority of the booths for the ‘expo’ are in place, and to date, of the investors already registered, most of them are foreigners.

A number of exhibitors have already purchased their booths, and are currently putting the finishing touches on them.

COM heads of state and ministers have already indicated their intention of attending the forum and ‘expo’, which is the first of its kind in the Caribbean.

“So, this investment forum will be the first of its kind in CARICOM,

and I think that the response that we have received so far is massive, which shows that the Caribbean needs something like this,” Minister Mustapha said.

Benn removed over disclosure of confidential information, lust for power - says GPSCCU board member

FOLLOWING the recent motion of no-confidence against Chairman of the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union (GPSCCU), Trevor Benn, board member Gillian Pollard has disclosed that the unauthorised disclosure of confidential information, the lust for power and other factors led to the decision to remove him from the post.

Pollard, while speaking at a press conference held at the credit union’s Hadfield Street office on Monday, claimed that the cooperative relationship between Benn and the other board members started to “shift” after his plan to lobby board members to have him hold both the chairmanship and the chief

executive officer (CEO) position failed.

She told the media that had Benn received the necessary support to go forward simultaneously holding both posts, he would have been answer-

able to himself, and given “ultimate power and unhindered authority” to make decisions on the operations of the GPSCCU. According to Pollard, the committee’s Vice-Chairman Patrick Mentore later put a motion to the Committee of Management to have the CEO and the Chairman position merged on behalf of Benn. She noted that when this was also voted down, the relationship between Benn and the other board members took a negative turn.

She further claimed that on April 20, 2022, Benn appeared on a popular Online programme, where derogatory terms were used to describe Directors of the Board. She alleged that it was during this same pro-

gramme that Benn disclosed sensitive information regarding the credit union.

She noted that this was a direct breach of the code of conduct for board members of the GPSCCU, who were all required to sign nondisclosure agreements to protect the sensitivity of the information coming out of the credit union.

Pollard noted that Benn refused to defend his behaviour on the programme as he and the vice-chairman opted not to showed up to the emergency committee meeting held on April 21,2022, in the credit union’s boardroom. Due to the lack of response from Benn, the ten committee members who were present, voted to pass the motion of no-confidence against Benn.

In maintaining that the Benn was properly removed, she explained to the media that the committee members acted in accordance with the powers they have. This power she said allows for the removal of any committee member from the chairmanship and for the voting in of a new chairman.

Pollard was adamant that while board members have moved to have Benn removed from the post of chairman, the board members are committed to continuing to work with Benn as a regular member of the board until the holding of the next Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Meanwhile, Benn, who subsequently spoke to the media outside the building, called the allegations “com-

pletely false”.

He noted that he has never divulged confidential information but has spoken about information that is already in the public domain. He contended that this information was leaked by the very members of the committee who voted to oust him.

Benn is adamant that he never received an invitation to the April 21 meeting at which the motion was voted on. He added that he was never even told of the allegations which were used to form the basis for the motion.

According to the committee members, at next meeting of the committee scheduled for Saturday, a decision will be made on the way forward.

Alleged intoxicated driver crashes into culvert, kills passenger

SHAZIE Hoosain, 44, of Green Field, East Coast Demerara (ECD) lost her life in the wee hours of Monday morning when the car in which she was travelling crashed on the Hand-EnVeldt Public Road, Mahaica, ECD. According to Police Headquarters, the motorcar with registration PJJ 485 was being driven by Saif Arjune, 22, along with passengers Shazie Hoosain; Arfeen Arjune, 19,

and a 16-year-old male.

Further enquiries disclosed that the driver was proceeding east along the northern side of the road, reportedly at a fast rate of speed, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a utility pole on the northern side of the road before crashing into a culvert.

As a result of the impact, the driver and other occupants received injuries about their bodies. Police ranks who re-

sponded, took the injured persons to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where Shazie Hoosain was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

Police said the driver and the 16-year-old who sustained a broken right leg were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where they were admitted.

The body of Hoosain is at Jerrick’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem.

Woman on $500,000 bail for causing death by dangerous driving Khamattie Mangar Karpen, 35, of Lot 52 Williamsburg, East Berbice, Corentyne, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $500,000. She was also granted $20,000 bail on the charge of driving under the influence.

Mangar, who is accused of causing the death of businessman, Rajendra “Andy” Khadaroo, 41, on May 6, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s on Monday. The charge alleged that on Friday, May 6, on the Nigg Public Road, she drove hire car HB 9593 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Khadaroo.

Additionally, on the said day, she drove the motor car while her alcohol level exceeded the prescribed legal limit of 35 micrograms. A breathalyzer test indicated that her alcohol level was 94 micrograms. She pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Singh recused himself from the matter since he is known personally to both the accused and victim and referred both matters to the Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for re-assignment on May 23.

While Mangar was being charged, the victim’s relatives were preparing for the burial of Khadaroo, who resided opposite the Albion Magistrate’s Court. It was an emotional service as many were still in a state of disbelief. His wife “Sharon” was inconsolable as she sat next to his coffin.

At around 05:00 hrs on Friday, May 6, Khadaroo was making his home on his motorcycle after morning prayers at the Rose Hall Town Masjid when he was

struck down by Karpen, who was attempting to turn into a street from the opposite direction. At the time, Khadaroo was observing an addi-

tional six-day fast following the end Ramadan and would go to the mosque every day for the morning (Fajr) prayer.

As a result of the collision, Khadaroo was flung off his motorcycle and on to the front windshield of the car before collapsing to the ground where he sustained multiple injuries.

He was picked up by relatives who were informed of the accident and transported to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was laid to rest on Monday at the Rose Hall

The police said a breathalyzer test conducted on the 22-year-old driver showed he was under the influence of alcohol. The police are continuing their investigation.

Arrival Day

WHAT motivates a political opposition to sow seeds of discord simply because?

At some points, the PNC, as the largest bloc in the APNU+AFC coalition, makes statements which connote amnesia that’s selective at best and dishonest at worst.

Context is needed.

The renaming of “Indian Arrival Day” to “Arrival Day” was one of the cosmetic fixes attempted by Mr Granger during his presidency as part of a watered-down social cohesion effort which not only failed to get off the ground, but also used taxpayers’ money to engage in consultations for a social cohesion programme, and created a social cohesion ministry with a ministerial portfolio which was later reduced to a department under

the Ministry of the Presidency, all the while employing a coordinator for social cohesion under that ministry turned department.

It felt like the ministerial portfolio for social cohesion was more of a space-saved for ministers, who either were not beneficiaries of mainstreamed portfolios, as in the case of Ms Ally from the inception of their term, or were placed there to keep them out of the public eye, as in the case of Dr Norton following the “Charlestown drug bond” scandal which eventually saw him removed from the minister of health portfolio.

Mr Granger’s published remarks on the matter at Plantation Highbury in 2017, reads: “Arrival Day is a national celebration. All Guyanese should

commemorate the chapter in our history when our peoples arrived in this country. This date, 5th May, this event, this commemoration at this place, Highbury, reminds us of the value that we all place on being together and at the same time being able to preserve our own identity.

“Arrival Day is observed as a national holiday on the 5th May each year. Today is also designated officially as Indian Arrival Day, so it is a double celebration, it’s National Arrival Day and Indian Arrival Day… Arrival Day commemorates the transformation of this country by the people who came: the Africans, the Chinese, the Indians and Portuguese who came here and mingled with the Amerindians, the people who have lived here

from time immemorial. Arrival Day signifies the transformation also of the demographic and the political economy of British Guiana as it was then.”

Much to the surprise of anyone who was already baffled by the bizarre rationale of Mr Granger at the time of his presidency, his party, the PNCR, has now demanded the renaming of “Arrival Day” to “Indian Arrival Day.” It begs the question of whether this fickle seesawing in the politics of naming could be seen as an attempt to stoke feud where it does not exist, and score political points among a demographic group which, after the sordid politics in Guyana’s formative years between 1964 to 1992, has largely not supported them.

The recent PNCR state-

ment on “Arrival Day” reads: “To strengthen national integration and social cohesion by according due respect and recognition to the various ethnic groups in our multicultural society, the former Leader of the PNCR and President of Guyana, David Granger, issued two public notices: (i) on February 27, 2017, he designated May 3rd each year as PORTUGUESE ARRIVAL DAY; and (ii) on January 6, 2017, he designated January 12th each year as CHINESE ARRIVAL DAY. “Given these changed circumstances surrounding the original purpose of Arrival Day -- coupled with the fact that Guyanese of African and Amerindian origins have designated days or months to celebrate their distinct heritages

-- the PNCR hereby joins the call for the May 5th observances to be officially recognized henceforth as INDIAN ARRIVAL DAY. “Designating May 5th as INDIAN ARRIVAL DAY also respects the historic fact that the date specifically marks the arrival of the first Indian Indentured labourers to these shores.”

Is this a reflection of something deeper within the party that the actions of Mr Granger did not receive support from those in the now party leadership? Plausible, considering the public tit for tat unfolding since, and even before, the party’s last December biennial congress.

Much of this feels like a grab for points by any means necessary.

The descent of the trade union movement in Guyana Dear Editor, THE trade union movement in Guyana was founded by Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow in 1919. The trade union movement was once a powerful force in our country. Pre-independence, the People’s Progressive Party was twice the victim of the trade union movement.

In 1953 with the Guiana Industrial Workers’ Union.

Later in 1964, the People’s National Congress aligned Trade Union Congress organised a strike which subsequently led to British intervention and the introduction of the proportional representation system.

However, today the majority of the trade unions in Guyana have lost their way.

These entities are plagued with poor leadership, disunity and the age-old problem of political affiliation. The trade union movement in Guyana has long been associated with politics. However,

never before have such pitiful attempts at trade unionism appeared in Guyana. This has resulted mainly because of ingrained union leadership.

The main objective of Labour Day celebrations has been lost in time. Last Sunday was Labour Day and the disunity among the trade unions was laid bare for all to see. Many of these unions are political pawns, whose priorities are based on political allegiances and sympathies, rather than the best interest of the workers they regularly purport to represent. This is shameful and unacceptable.

These union leaders have become so embolden as to openly demonstrate their political loyalty. The many members who prop up these failed unions, should demand better from the union leaders.

Many have noticed the bizarre position of the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) that failed to participate in the annual May Day march and

rally. Though a few observers are surprised by this stance, this letter writer is not.

The Guyana Public Service Union failed miserably to hold the People’s National Congress- dominated Coalition Government accountable to an agreement they made with the Granger-led Government in 2015 for salary increases in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In doing so, the GPSU failed in representing the workers simply because the GPSU appears to be a political arm of the People’s National Congress Reform and seems to care little about the workers, but more for its political masters.

The GPSU had asked the failed coalition of convenience (APNU+AFC) for salary increases in 2016, 2017 and 2018 of a flat payment of $75, 000 per month to all public servants, together with a pay increase of 25 per cent across the board for 2016 and a flat payment of $7000

per month and 20 per cent increase across the board for 2017 and $9000 per month and 20 per cent increase across the board for 2018.

This never happened, not even close to the proposed figures, with only single-digit increases, lest we forget.

The representation provided by the GPSU is woefully incompetent to say the least. Over time, this union and many other trade unions in Guyana have lost the confidence of its members and non-members alike. This is public knowledge. Most notably are the Guyana Teacher’s Union, the Guyana Trade Union Congress and the Guyana Public Service Union.

The trade union movement should be about defending and advancing the rights, struggles and overall interest of the workers. The disinterest in the rights and conditions of many workers are obvious by the actions of many of the union lead-

ers. The lack of impartiality by these union leaders and the playing of politics with the lives and livelihoods of people are distasteful. Many of these union leaders are political hopefuls. This surely spells disaster for the future.

For years the Guyana Public Service Union has brought itself and its almost comical representation into question. Firstly, the GPSU as an entity is in dire need of leadership. The President of the Guyana Public Service Union is Mr. Patrick Yarde and his Vice-President is Ms Sharon Gardener. The failing of this union comes directly from the top. The leadership of the GPSU is completely ineffective. As a result, the union has been seeing a drastic decline in membership over the past few years.

Patrick Yarde has been the President of the GPSU for well over 30 years now.

As a result, the GPSU has become stagnant and visionless.

Numerous calls have been made for the resignation of Patrick Yarde over the years; he remains unmoved by these calls. What is his obsession with power I may not know, but it’s clear that the current leadership of the GPSU has no interest in what happens to public servants. After all, even Fidel Castro stepped down.

The leadership of Patrick Yarde has failed so immensely, that even the PNC/R overseas-based supporter Rickford Burke has added his voice in calling for the resignation of Yarde. President Ali once said, “You cannot represent workers with a political agenda.” The trade union movement in Guyana should get its act together, as it has obligations to its members to represent their interests impartially.

Caribbean Food Insecurity Post-COVID and Ukraine Part 1: Finally coming to grips with age-old realities

By Earl Bousquet IT’S taken the Ukraine war to drive home some age-old lessons offered by life and experience but ignored by Caribbean governments and people at all levels from Time Immemorial, perhaps the most important being the need to reduce the region’s foodimport bill through export substitution by Growing What We Eat and Eating What We Grow.

The sheer rise in the cost of everything imported was already being reflected in the Supply Chain Crisis, sparked

by COVID-19 two years earlier in March 2021, when the Ukraine war’s effect on wheat and grain and energy prices hit in March following the start of the war in February 2022.

The combination of the increased freight costs and increased cost of imported food items has hit home hardest at the supermarkets, where prices rise virtually every time consumers do their groceries.

As per usual, among the items being paid more for are many that are grown locally across the region or manufactured food items (from flour and wheat products to rice and sugar) produced regionally.

But if ever the message got home, it’s since the Ukraine war, which has also affected energy prices from gasoline and diesel to cooking gas, as well as electricity and every other service depending on imported oil and gas.

Actually, the rise in food prices hasn’t been felt in full quite as yet, as the natural creativity in Caribbean people is still driven by the policy that ‘Necessity is the Mother of Invention’ and therefore still find ways to make ends meet.

But all indications are that governments and people, in that order, have to take a page from responses to COVID-19 and take the bull by the horns and start saying and doing those things, enlightening and acting in ways that will not necessarily make-up for lost time (which is impossible) but to tackle old issues with new verve and purpose.

Guyana is in the best position it’s ever been to lead the proverbial run on the bulls, thanks to its ability to explore and exploit its age-old wealth to not just

improve agriculture at home, but also to give the best leadership possible to regional efforts to treat agriculture as more than just one of several sectors competing for attention and resources at national levels.

With President Irfaan Ali as the Chair of CARICOM’s Prime Ministerial Subcommittee on Agriculture and Guyana’s agriculture minister having lead responsibility among regional peers for turning agriculture around at home and regionally, the chances exist like never before to take forward steps and many have indeed been taken, starting with the President’s emphasis on food security and the regional pledge to reduce the region’s food-import bill by 25 per cent in the first instance.

In Guyana, farmers of all types are looking forward to continuity of and benefiting from the various initiatives already taken at home to inject new boosters into agriculture.

News reports in May have featured: livestock farmers getting Black Giant Chickens and Black Belly sheep; poultry farmers being encouraged to grow more chickens and expand processing and manufacturing; Aqua farmers get help with shrimps and prawns; Region Two farmers get $12 Million in tractors to boost agriculture and rice harvesting was 77 per cent complete; and Guyana and Brazil agree to enhance and diversify trade in agriculture. Guyana noted the climate is right for regional agro-investments and the government has indicated that it is ready to cooperate with the Czech Republic and Nigeria on matters of food security.

Leadership on Food Security is also absolutely important as the region is very insecure in that respect – and increasingly so.

Indeed, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Food Insecurity has affected nearly 40 per cent of the population in the Englishspeaking Caribbean (an estimated 2.8 million people), one million more than in April 2020.

The survey was supported by the European Union and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau of

Humanitarian Assistance.

The situation continues to worsen, according to the survey, “as this level of insecurity continues to increase in the region with the current

figure 72 per cent higher than what it was in April 2020.”

THE Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will today commence hearing an appeal filed by Bibi Shareema Gopaul and her ex-lover Jarvis ‘Barry’ Small challenging their conviction and 45-year sentence for the brutal murder of Neesa Gopaul.

The hearing is expected to begin at 09:00hrs via

video conference and will be streamed on the court’s YouTube page.

In 2015, a jury found Gopaul and Small guilty of murdering the 16-year-old.

They were later sentenced

by Justice Navindra Singh to 106 years and 96 years, respectively. The murdered teen was Gopaul’s eldest daughter.

The pair subsequently filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging their conviction and sentence and in September 2021, the court reduced their respective sentences to 45 years; the conviction was however upheld.

The attorneys have asked the court to reverse and/or set aside the convictions. They are also arguing that the sentences were too severe, given the circumstances of the case.

The attorneys in the court documents filed on behalf of the duo, claim that the trial was unfair, and that the judge erred in law.

Prior to the murder, Small and Bibi were in a relationship, and, at one time, Small had even lived with Gopaul and her two daughters including Neesa, at Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

In addition to the body, a passport bearing the name Neesa Lalita Gopaul was also found. The teenager was reported missing just days before the gruesome discovery was made.

Around 50 exhibitors so far have paid for their booths, while over 70 have indicated an interest in participating in the event.

An import-dependent region, the survey noted that the Caribbean continues to feel the socioeconomic strain of COVID-19, now being compounded by the Ukraine conflict.

The statement says,” In the short to medium term, this situation is increasing pressure on governments to identify solutions to ensure families can meet their essential needs.”

It advised that “Innovation in agri-food systems and regional supply chains, coupled with continued support to the most vulnerable house-

holds, will be essential to improving the resilience of regional food systems so that prices can be kept as stable as possible.”

These findings represent a veritable echo chamber of the reverberating vibrations of prolonged ignoring by governments primarily, of taking difficult but necessary decisions, especially including weaning Caribbean economies, after Independence, off dependence on preferential treatment by former colonial powers for traditional crops such as bananas, rice, sugar cane and other primary products.

Jamaica and the Windward Islands (Dominica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines and Grenada) all lost their preferential banana market after the US lodged a complaint at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the late 1990s, claiming the preferential treatment for the former European colonies impeded access to the European markets by ‘Central American’ banana companies owned

by US multinationals.

Today, after Caribbean banana produced ignored the regional market, Saint Lucia made regional headlines recently after reaching a deal to supply bananas to Antigua & Barbuda.

Governments the world over are still learning from COVID that taking difficult decisions early saves lives.

It is a lesson written on every nation’s doorstep – and the speed with which the region emerged from its serious level of Food Insecurity will depend totally on the willingness of the political directorate to cut long-term losses by profiting from acting early where others failed.

Any relaxation of seriousness and commitment to do what’s needed in this postCOVID time of continuing war in Ukraine will result in hardships Caribbean people don’t deserve and should be protected from, by all means and at all times, from now!

Big boost for air services between Guyana, Saudi Arabia — with signing of agreement between two nations A NEW air services agreement between Guyana and Saudi Arabia has paved the way for the expansion of aviation services between the two nations.

According to a post on the Ministry of Public Works’ Facebook page, the new agreement was signed

by Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill and Minister of Transport and Logistic Services for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saleh Bin Nasser Al-Jasser, on the sidelines of the Future Aviation Forum 2022 in Saudi Arabia.

Guyana is being represented at the forum by Minister Edghill and Director of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority’s Air Transport Management, Saheed Suliman.

In addition to the engaging discussions during the course of the conference, there will be the signing of over 50 agreements and Memoranda of Understanding, and the launch of several new policies and strategies for the development of the civil aviation sector.

Testimony to the seriousness of the forum is the new agreement between Guyana and Saudi Arabia. The two nations established formal diplomatic relations on February 22, 2012.

While the new agreement will enhance air services between the countries, Guyana has already started to lay the foundation for transformation of the local aviation sector.

It was reported that in keeping with its plan to raise the standards of the local aviation sector and improve accessibility across Guyana, the government has set aside

$2 billion in Budget 2022 for enhancement works in this economic area.

This year, based on the budget, $600 million will be spent on the rehabilitation and maintenance of hinterland airstrips at Eteringbang, Karisparu, Paruima and Ekereku Bottom.

The works to be done on those airstrips are intended to make them compliant with the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority’s minimum engineering standards. Further, this will improve safety for travellers, aircraft and personnel using the airstrips.

He said that the government has placed emphasis on modernising the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to fully comply with air transport standards required for a world- class international port of entry.

As it is now, works include rehabilitation of the international apron and construction of a taxiway; construction of an administrative building with conferencing facilities; offices for the airlines and other supporting agencies; a duty-free bond and the construction of a new office complex to accommodate CJIA’s employees.

In accepting the certificate, PGI General Manager Lesley Ramlall pointed to the work done by the company’s management and staff to ensure compliance.

“To be approved for the Made in Guyana Certification Mark is a clear indication of our commitment to ensure that our products are of the highest quality; so, every consumer that [sic] consumes

our products must have that level of confidence that the product was manufactured under the strictest of hygienic conditions.”

The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), which was key in the establishment of the Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme, was represented by its Executive Director, Nizam Hassan. In brief remarks, he committed to supporting the programme and extended congratulations to the company.

The event was also addressed by Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of PGI, Ravi Annand, who joined virtually.

the GNBS’ National Quality Awards Ceremony in October 2021. It is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on the local and international markets and is a signature of quality for authentic Guyanese products.

The Made in Guyana Certification will be monitored through surveillance visits by the GNBS to ensure the approved quality is maintained, the release said.

Essequibo businessman treats 30 ‘moms’ in memory of his ‘mom’ WELL-KNOWN businessman, Parmeshwar Jagmohan, called “Joe” of International Import and Supplies, located at Lot 15 Garnett Street, Campbellville, Georgetown and formerly of Hampton Court, honoured 30 mothers on the Essequibo Coast on Mother’s Day. The good gesture was in memory of his beloved mother Latchmiama Jagmohan known as “Chano” who passed away on October 19,

2021.

According to Jagmohan, the women selected were from his mother’s home village, Hampton Court and they hailed from the three main religions, Hindu, Muslim and Christian.

In remembrance of his mother, the mothers were each given a hamper and other goodies on the special day.

Jagmohan said he was very close to his mother and he knows treating the mothers would bring immense joy

to her. He said his mother always cared about her fellow women and was very generous to them. The Mother’s Day treat was just one of many good gestures by the businessman over the years.

He is known for making donations to mandirs, senior citizens and the less fortunate.

The mothers who were treated expressed gratitude to the businessman and some of them even broke down in tears when he reached out to them.

Judge to sum up evidence in 2016 murder trial

TODAY, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow is expected to sum up the evidence, in the trial of two men who are accused of the 2016 murder of 22-year-old Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) resident, Dewaun Baksh.

Rocky Lallu and Somar Shako have both denied murdering Baksh on January 1, 2016, at Greenwich Park, some four villages away from where he lived.

Prosecutors Latifah Elliot and Marisa Edwards are on record for the state, while Lallu is being represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir, and Shako by attor-

neys-at-law Sophia Findlay, Konyo Sandiford and Narissa Leander.

On Monday, the prosecution and defence gave their closing statements, following which, the judge adjourned the case until Tuesday, May 10, for his summation.

Following the summing up at the Demerara High Court, the judge will hand over the case to the 12-member jury, who will retire to consider the verdict.

Duo plead not guilty to murder of Professor Mars A MIXED 12-member jury was, on Monday, empanelled before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court for the trial of two men who allegedly murdered 75-year-old retired professor, Pairadeau `Perry’ Mars in 2016.

Paul Chance, 23, and Andre Benjamin, 22, denied murdering the former University of Guyana professor

gang of teens, who beat and bound him in his house. At the time, the teens were between the ages of 15 and 18 and reportedly confessed to the murder/robbery, while in police custody.

On the day in question, at about 18:30hrs, the professor was found in his house by his wife with his hands and feet duct-taped and with injuries to his head.

The house was ransacked, and a number of articles and cash were missing.

According to reports, the teens were known to Professor Mars. They were arrested after neighbours allegedly observed the group leaving the retired professor’s residence with suitcases and entering a car. Subsequently, his wife returned home and found his bloodied and lifeless body in the house.

Less than 24 hours later, the police arrested the suspects and recovered a sum of cash, a laptop computer, iPod and PlayStation that were taken from Mars’ house.

Mars specialised in African Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, USA, having studied history at the University of Guyana and Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

He was also credited with developing an international academic exchange project between Africana Studies, the College of Urban Labour and Metropolitan Affairs (CULMA), and the University of Guyana.

A post-mortem performed on Mars had revealed that death was due to manual strangulation, compounded by multiple fractures to the head and face.

a man, who was identified as Haynes, shot them both in the aftermath of an argument in the same community.

According to Police Headquarters, Jacobs was hanging out with some friends, when he reportedly got into an argument with Haynes.

When Bacchus intervened, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm from the waist of his pants and discharged several rounds in the direction of the two cousins.

Jacobs received a gunshot wound to his upper rightside abdomen and Bacchus a gunshot to his lower right

side back.

The suspect then made good his escape and the two injured men were rushed to

the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Jacobs succumbed to his injuries on April 26, 2022,

while receiving treatment.

The next day, police issued a wanted bulletin for Haynes in relation to the

murder. On May 3, Haynes turned himself in at the Brickdam Police Station.

Shepherd lone Guyanese as CWI names ODI squad for Pakistan, Netherlands ‒ Hope named vice captain Romario Shepherd is the lone Guyanese named by the Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan.

The West Indies will visit the Netherlands for three ODIs on May 31, June 2 and 4, followed by another three ODIs on June 8, 10 and 12 in Pakistan.

The tour of The Netherlands will be the first-ever ODI Series between the two teams and will be played at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen.

The matches in Pakistan will be played at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi.

Both series form part of the ICC ODI Super League, in which teams will have the opportunity to earn points to secure one of the top seven places, excluding hosts India, to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Three newcomers have been named in the ODI squad – fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis, as well as specialist batter, Keacy Carty. Both Seales and Lewis have played at the Test level.

Carty is the first player from St. Maarten to be selected for the West Indies Senior Men’s team.

Lead selector, the Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “We were impressed with Carty and the way he goes about his innings; we saw several glimpses of his ability the way he played against England earlier this year for the CWI President’s XI. We hope that giving him this opportunity, he will recognize the importance of representing West Indies. We think he is a young batsman with great promise, and this is the kind of tour he can show he fits in.”

Haynes added: “We also have a very good group of young fast bowlers who have demonstrated their ability and we want to use these two tours to give them opportunities in the 50-over format. We have a week in The Netherlands and another week in Pakistan and this should provide them with quality opposition to bowl against as we build towards the Cricket World Cup in 2023. Phillip has been around for some time, and we know what he can offer;

Seales has been very good in Test cricket and Lewis is making a return to the West Indies set-up following some good performances.”

Fifteen-year-old Hunter crowned Novice champion

‒ Bacchus wins Men’s Physique, Fitzpatrick is Ms Bikini 2022 FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Romeo Hunter delivered a total package, which saw him flexing his way to championship honours in the Novice Bodybuilding Championships and Mr Linden Classic, which was held on Saturday at Lichas Hall, Linden.

Hunter, from Unity Gym, marched his way to the Junior Bodybuilding title and the Under 154 lbs division, before he won the overall title.

President of the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GBBFF), Keavon Bess, said that the federation was impressed with the talent on display and the overall composure by the

eventual champion.

“So that in itself is very impressive.” He added that the GBBFF continues to be impressed with the quality of athletes that are coming to the forefront.

The Men’s Physique category, which had 11 participants, was given as an example.

Shahan Bacchus, of Azam Gym, was crowned overall champion in that event, with Universal Gym’s Shavin Green finishing second and Unity Gym’s S. Sajar, third.

In the Miss Bikini battle, Cassia Fitzpatrick from Unity Gym, got past Shinana Liverpool from Perry’s Fitness.

There were also two other

female categories, the Bikini Wellness and the Miss Linden Best Legs, which were both won by Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Omisi Williams (Perry’s Fitness) won the Mr Linden title.

Bramble, Singh hits 50s on day one of practice match ... Junior Sinclair, Cameron share seven wickets THE experience of Anthony Bramble and Vishaul Singh once again came to the fore as they struck vital half-centuries on day one of the four-day practice match at the National Stadium, Providence.

At stumps, Bramble is unbeaten on 67 (10x4s; 1x6) from 90 balls while Antony Adams is yet to score, in Leon Johnson’s XI 158-5 from 41.3 overs.

Bramble and Singh, who was run out for 50 (8x4s) from 98 balls, have given their side a 39-run lead over Tagenarine Chanderpaul XI’s which were bundled out for 119 in 39 overs.

Tevin Imlach (15), Chandrapaul Hemraj (6), Leon Johnson (4) and Akshaya Persaud (0) were the other dismissed batsmen for Johnson’s XI. Berbice FA set to reignite the passion in the Ancient County Senior League to kick off on Sunday CLUBS in the Ancient County of Berbice are set to re-ignite the competitive fire when the Berbice Football Association (BFA) kicks off their Senior Men’s League on Sunday.

The League, partly sponsored by the Guyana Football Federation, was unveiled by BFA’s president, Shurwin Ford, at a simple but significant launch on Wednesday last in New Amsterdam.

Forde thanked the registered clubs for riding out the storm presented

by COVID-19 and assured them that the BFA, with support from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), will back them all the way

NSC pumps $1.8M into Independence Three-Stage race THE Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), on Monday, pedalled away with $1.8M in support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), towards the hosting of this year’s Independence Three-Stage road race.

This year’s Three-Stage Independence race will start on Saturday at Corriverton from 7:30 am and proceed to finish in New Amsterdam.

The second stage, also on Saturday, will pedal off at 2:00 pm from Rosignol to Georgetown for the finish at Carifesta Avenue.

On Sunday, the third and final stage will commence from Kara Kara, Linden (from 7:30 am) to Homestretch Avenue.

Linden Dowrich, president of the GCF, received the NSC’s cheque from Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, and Commission-

er, Cristy Campbell at the commission’s Main Street, Georgetown location.

Ninvalle said that while this is the NSC’s first support for the local Cycling Federation for this year (2022), it will certainly not be the last.

The country’s Director of Sport said the NSC has been very supportive of all disciplines in Guyana, and the Independence Three-Stage race is an important event on the local sporting calendar.

According to Ninvalle, “this particular event has received support from the National Sports Commission for a considerable amount of years and I think this is something that we want to continue as being a partner with the Guyana Cycling Federation.”

Meanwhile, Dowrich thanked the Commission

for their continuous support in ensuring that one of the marquee events for the GCF is materializing once again.

Last year, We Stand United cyclist Briton John clocked six hours, 56 minutes, and 57 seconds (6:56:57) across three stages to take the event’s overall title.

Jamual John placed second in a time of 6:57:09 and Paul DeNobrega third in a time of 7:01:56.

Raynauth Jeffrey placed fourth with an overall time of 7:02:17. Team Evolution’s Christopher Griffith finished six seconds behind Jeffrey for the fifth overall position (7:02:23).

Overall, Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club’s Suzanne Hamilton finished ahead of Shenika Teixeira and Aneisha Crandon in the female battle.
