President, Dr Irfaan Ali, addressing those gathered, said Guyanese must uplift each other.

“I greet you with strong conviction based on spiritual teachings and underpinnings, that we have really no other choice but to embrace each other, we have no other choice than to lift each other up rather than tear each other down, we have no other choice than to celebrate each other rather than destroy each other,” the President said.

The Head of State then revealed that it was almost a week ago that he realised that having a national day of fasting and prayers

“I realised that for us to establish the foundation of principles that the ‘One Guyana’ must stand on, the church, the mosque, the temples and the religious bodies must be an integral part of that foundation because fundamentally the principles that govern a society that is just, are the principles that govern religious undertaking,” he told the Arthur Chung Conference Centre gathering.

The President also contended that if all of Guyana can understand the principles and values that they must stand for based on the religious underpinnings, society will be better and the country will achieve its ‘One Guyana’ goal.

With that the President said that in this period of fasting, persons should take time to reflect

uphold peace, uphold patience and compassion and that we do not waiver on these values but we ensure that these values are fundamental to the foundation of what we share in our congregation, of what we share with the people under our charge then our country will be stronger,” he said.

Dr Ali went on to say that if one is to look at the three major holy books, there are six different life lessons spoken about in all the texts and these include unity, truth, equality and forgiveness.

He said that based on these lessons there is no space for division based on race or any other negatively impacting issue for that matter.

The period of fasting, he said, gives all the opportunity to seek each other out, engage with each oth-

The attorney, in a statement, said that while he is constrained from making specific comments, given that the matter is now being litigated before the courts and is therefore sub judice, he recognises that there is no such rule in the critical court of public opinion.

“I, therefore, wish to say that the racist conduct of which I am accused, in no way reflects my philosophy or personal values. More importantly,

it would be an indictment on my parents and elders, given their efforts to ensure that my upbringing would produce in me a person of the highest moral, ethical and professional conduct,” Attorney Singh said.

He also noted that while he wait for this matter to be properly determined in court, he will strive to remain respectful and faithful to his values; to serve his clients from all walks of life with professionalism, and to use every opportunity to be of service or support to his fellow citizens, regardless of race, class or creed.

“I am eternally grateful to all of those persons, from both near and far, who have reached out to offer support in this most difficult time,” the attorney said.

Guyanese swindled of millions in romance package, pyramid schemes

THERE is a sharp rise of cases where suspected Nigerian citizens who are in the country illegally and those internationally are collaborating with Guyanese citizens in the commission of what is referred to as “Package Delivery Scams or Romance Scams” and “Pyramid Schemes.”

Several Guyanese have been scammed millions of dollars, according to Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) of the Guyana Police Force, Senior Superintendent Fazil Karimbaksh in a statement released on Friday.

The SOCU Head stated that the Package Delivery or Romance Scammers have emerged more prominently during the COVID-19 pandemic and many persons have fallen victim to the swindle.

The scammers, he noted, target primarily females via sev-eral social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and other online dating sites.

“The modus operandi used by the scammers is to befriend unsuspecting females via the aforementioned digital platforms. The scammers create fake profiles of Caucasian men with luxury vehicles and large sums of cash to gain the attention of the victims. After communicating with the victim for some time to build trust with their `new friend’ or `love interest,’ the scammer promises the intended victim some form of assistance.

In most instances, it is supposedly a package containing valuable gift items such as designer clothing, jewellery, televisions, cellphones, money and other electronic devices,” the SOCU head stated.

Further, SOCU noted that the victim is usually contacted by a local associate of the scammer, confirming the arri-al of the package and requesting their personal contact and other information.

The intended victim is subsequently contacted again and requested to deposit

“They inform the victim that the payment is required to cover brokerage fees, customs duties, penalties and/or shipping charges for the package(s), which was found on inspection to contain high valued [sic] items. Once the payment is made, the scammers discontinue all contact with the victim,” SOCU underscored.

SOCU is advising the general public that in the event anyone is approached via email, Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS, dating sites etc. and is promised gifts or COVID-19-related financial or other assistance, to not fall prey to these promises.

“Do not share any personal information, transfer or deposit money into the bank accounts of persons you meet online and do not know very well,” SOCU advised.

Brilliant Minds GUYANA’S education system is designed to create a conducive environment to produce brilliant young minds that are innovative and visionary.

This is according to President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who recently hosted a simple ceremony at the Office of the President in honour of School of the Nations’ student, John McGrath. The Nations’ student was officially presented with the Cambridge Learners Award for his extraordinary performance. McGrath was awarded the prize and title of the world’s Top Student for Cambridge International Advanced Subsidiary (AS) English Language after he was successful in obtaining 99 marks out of a maximum of 100 in the June 2021 examinations. He became the first Guyanese to top a Cambridge AS examination.

This is no small achievement, especially when seen against the highly competitive nature of the examination involving over one million students from across 136 countries.

Guyana is known to have brilliant students who have done themselves and their country proud. Guyanese students

have consistently won the top awards at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations, both at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) levels. In fact, Queens College was recently adjudged by the CXC as the top secondary school in the Caribbean for having produced on a consistent basis students who excelled at the regional examinations.

This is indeed a feather in the cap in the education system of Guyana, especially when seen against the background of Guyana at one time being at the bottom of the performance ladder in the entire Caribbean.

It is an established fact that under the PNC regime, Guyana’s education system was underperforming to the extent that we were ranked as the worst performing country in terms of education attainment levels, both at the national and regional levels. It is a lasting shame on the then regime that the education system failed an entire generation of young people due to severe underfunding and mismanagement of the sector by the PNC regime.

It was not until the PPP/C administration

assumed office on October 5, 1992 that the decline in education standards was halted and the attainment level of students began to progressively improve to a point where Guyanese students are once again taking the regional spotlight. For several consecutive years Guyanese students topped the Caribbean in several subject areas including the overall best student.

The PPP/C administration must be commended for placing education as a top national priority. As pointed out by President Ali, education is pivotal for national development. According to the President, “every Guyanese person, irrespective of the region in which they live, irrespective of their ethnic or religious background, would have an equal opportunity and stake in the development of our country and resulting prosperity. And how are we doing this? How we are doing this is by rolling out universal access to world class education as a centerpiece of personal upliftment and empowerment.”

Experience has shown that countries that invest heavily in education tend to leap-frog to higher levels of economic development as several of the Asian economies have demon-

strated. The development of human capital is globally recognised as a critical variable in the modernisation process. It is for this reason that the PPP/C administration has been putting so much emphasis on the development of its human resources, especially at this stage in our development when the country is experiencing unprecedented levels of economic growth.

President Ali, in congratulating the young McGrath, said that he is looking forward to his development and would like, in the future, to see his name beside “global articles and writings that are celebrated”.

The President also took the opportunity to commend the School of the Nations and indicated that the government and the school have recently been collaborating on a number of initiatives involving different agencies.

This is indeed the way to go. Education delivery cannot be the responsibility of the government alone.

There has to be a partnership between the public sector and private providers of education services, as the President correctly alluded to.

Love for country goes beyond limited political persuasions

Dear Editor,

I BELIEVE that most Guyanese who are residing either in or out of Guyana are very proud of the development currently taking place in our country.

That patriotism, even though not always evident, is present and often on display when there is a gathering of Guyanese or people of like-mind, at home or abroad. People, who were born before the beginning of the twenty-first century, are familiar with the word ‘potential’; this word is repeatedly used by our policymakers when describing Guyana from an economic perspective. Well, at long last, the word ‘potential’ has real meaning.

This potential has become an increasing reality, especially in the context of infrastructural and human development with complementary efforts to brand and market the country as a credible tourism destination.

All Guyanese would have been proud of and, arguably, benefitted from the Linden Highway, the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the University of Guyana, the various housing development initiatives, the construction of additional modern hospitals, (Linden; for example) among others. A few years ago, I was visiting Linden with some overseas-based

Guyanese who were traveling on this road for the first time. There were comments like, “Wow! I never knew that there was such a highway in Guyana.” At no time during the discussions did anyone ask which party was in government when it was constructed. They saw these initiatives as development for all Guyanese.

Suffice it to say that the love for country goes beyond limited political persuasions and ideologues and extends to, in the case of overseas-based Guyana, a desire to return and invest in the continued development of this beloved country. Arguably, in the recent past, there has been an increasing number of Guyanese resettling in their homeland. This, in and off itself, suggests an immense desire to make and call Guyana home and an interest in its continued development.

It must be said, though, that sometimes our growing development in several sectors is lost or overshadowed by political noise.

I understand that during the elections’ campaign period, political parties have manifestos that outline their plans for developing the country and will therefore, once in government, constantly remind the public of the success stories. I fully understand that it is the nature of politics. However, at some

stage, the focus must be less on taking credit and more on getting all our people to feel that they directly or indirectly contributed to our country’s development. This latter view is sometimes debatable as politics, as we can all agree, can be polarising and impacts attitude and behaviours especially relative to love of country. Hence, it’s my view that our country is viewed by many Guyanese through the prism of politics rather than “love of country”.

I remember a time, in the not-too-distant past, when Guyanese of both African and Indian descent essentially disowned their country of birth and associated with foreign countries due to perceived political backlash.

For example, I’ve witnessed the sad revelation of Guyanese of African decent saying Ghana is their homeland and Guyanese of Indian descent claiming a Trinidad And Tobago birthright before emigrating to Canada or the USA (I have heard these comments with my own two ears). This, coupled with limited or biased mass media coverage of the country and event-related activities, contributes to the overall low morale of the Guyanese, home and especially abroad, to be proud of the progress made by country. Take the coverage of the expansion of the CJIA in the last four years, as an example, and you will notice the

widespread negative reflection of unplanned delays and other challenges without much rational explanation for same. Arguably, this impacts perceptions about accountability, transparency and other values about Guyana.

This is where initiatives such as deliberate country-specific pubic relations and marketing make a huge difference to not only present information in a user-friendly and palatable way but address myths and misconceptions to foster credibility. I honestly believe when people, especially the youth, see Guyana for what it’s worth and could relate to similar features in the developed countries, they will be proud of their country; this will enhance patriotism and there will be a less desire to emigrate. Thus, we must therefore be intentional about neither politics nor race defining our love for country.

The point I am making, Mr. Editor, is that patriotism and love of one’s country is directly linked to people seeing not only the beauty of nature but the development projects that not only improve the standard of living of the population but showcase the country.

Australian man claims he’s –– and heir Queen’s grandson to her throne

The Reporter: Amy Sinclair of Australia’s 7 News TV THE BIG STORY The Queensland man who believes he is Prince Charles and Camilla’s ‘Aussie son’ has shared a new piece of evidence in a bid to prove his royal paternity claims.

Simon Dorante-Day has attracted headlines around the world with his lovechild case, which he says is the result of decades of research.

Now a new photo comparison of a younger Dorante-Day alongside the Queen has caught the attention of royal watchers, with many noting the “mirror image” resemblance.

Since being shared on social media, hundreds have reacted to the “unique similarities” between Dorante-Day, 56, and Her Majesty.

“Hairline same. Eyebrows same. Noses same.

Eye shape same,” said one.

Another wrote: “Absolutely! No doubt with this comparison.”

A third said: “The eyebrows and their position above your eyes are another mirror image.”

Added one more: “The shape of the face on the sides and the bottom are very similar, and unique.

That’s what struck me the most.”

Others said they believed the new photo comparison strengthened Dorante-Day’s case.

“I’ve no doubt in my mind that you are related,” one Facebook user said.

Added another: “Those jolly genes are having a merry old time. At all ages/ stages, there is undeniable very strong likeness to your biological family.”

Dorante-Day has been fighting to have Prince Charles and Camilla legally submit to a DNA paternity

case since 2018.

“I went public with my claims in the 1990s, and sent out my first official release in 2005,” he tells 7NEWS.com.au.

“My first court case was in 2018, and my legal battles continue to this day.

I won’t rest until I have Charles and Camilla submit to a paternity test, as per a court order.

“I want to do this the right way, so that my family and I can finally get the answers we deserve.”

Dorante-Day says photo comparisons help him with his legal case.

“A picture speaks a thousand words,” he said.

“The courts consider physical similarities and genetic traits when looking at paternity cases, especially when DNA tests are not readily available.

“I am also really moved when ordinary people see photos of myself and my children alongside members of the royal family, and see similarities on their own -- that so many people can see it…

“Of course, I have a lot more proof than just photographs to back up my claims - and all of my research is checkable and readily accessible.

“I am just a man who started looking for my biological parents, and every road led me back to Charles and Camilla.”

The Case: Simon Dorante-Day has provided these claims to support his belief that he is Charles and Camilla’s son: • Dorante-Day was born on April 5, 1966, in Gosport, Portsmouth, in the UK. • At the age of eight months, he was adopted by a local couple named Karen and David Day. His adoptive grandparents, Winifred and Ernest Bowlden, had both worked for the Queen and Prince Philip in one of their royal households. Ernest Bowlden also received an Imperial Service Award.

• Dorante-Day’s grandmother told him many times that he was Camilla and Charles’ child. “She didn’t just hint at it, she told

me outright,” he said.

• Dorante-Day’s research has shown him that Charles and Camilla first became close in 1965. He claims months later, in the lead-up to when he was born, Camilla disappeared from Britain’s social scene for at least nine months, while Charles was sent to Australia.

• A historian has claimed the hospital where Dorante-Day was born, as listed on his birth certificate, didn’t deliver a single baby during the decade he was born. It’s further believed that the names the parents listed on his birth certificate were “fictitious”.

• Dorante-Day claims Camilla kept him until he was eight months old, using the royals and protection officers to help conceal him. He goes on to allege that when he was getting too old, it was arranged that one of the Queen’s former house staff, his adoptive grandmother, would have her daughter adopt him.

• Dorante-Day said he has recollections of being taken to houses around Portsmouth as a little boy.

There he would spend time with the woman he believes was Camilla, while protection officers and his adoptive parents waited outside.

• Dorante-Day said his first and middle names, Simon Charles, were given to him by his biological parents. “My adoptive mother told me that it was a condition of the adoption that my name, Simon Charles, stay the same; my middle name stay the same,” he said.

“Charles and Camilla had a close friend called Simon at the time.”

The Back Story: The story was first published on April 5, to coincide with his 56th birthday, and if a DNA paternity test is agreed to by Charles and Camilla, and Mr. Dorante-Day’s story proves true, it would mean that the Australian citizen would be Charles’ first son.

The Royal Problem: If Mr. Dorante-Day’s claims prove true, he will be next in line to sit on the Royal Throne after Charles, and not Prince William.

President Ali calls for more support ahead of Agriculture Investment Forum –– several CARICOM heads, Republic Bank, IDB already on board

WHILE lauding several CARICOM heads, Republic Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the diplomatic community for backing Guyana’s upcoming Agriculture Investment Forum, President Dr. Irfaan Ali is urging others to come onboard as part of efforts to reduce the region’s food import bill, and boost food security.

President Ali issued this call at Friday’s launch of the May 19-21 event. During the launch, which has held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), it was disclosed that the current Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) John Antonio Briceño of Belize; Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley; and Prime Minister of St. Vin-

He said that the forum will provide great opportunities for interaction among attendees, and is expected to facilitate the matching of bankable projects and prospective investors.

“It is the intent that this be a great push to cross-border investment with CARICOM member states for investment to stimulate agriculture diversification and increased production,” the agriculture minister said.

Meanwhile, in a pre-recorded message, Dr. Gonsalves said his country will be represented at the event,

President Dr. Irfaan Ali and that he is hoping that all stakeholders come onboard to further build the region’s agriculture sector.

“More than ever, we have to build agriculture and feed ourselves in this region, and President Irfaan Ali has a plan, and we need to interrogate that plan. And it also requires investments, not only from the states, but also the private sector from the region and globally,” Dr. Gonsalves said.

PM Mottley, who joined the launch virtually, urged others to support the initiative, saying: “We believe then that it was possible for us to reduce our import bill for food by 25 per cent, and we needed to put things in place… I want to urge all of us that we didn’t know then; we know now… that we would face, regrettably, a threat to food security.”

PM Briceño, in his pre-recorded message, said that the upcoming event

holds a special significance within the community, as it speaks to the fundamental priority shared by the various states and stakeholders to collaborate.

He said: “CARICOM governments are cognisant of the interdependence of the relationship of the private sector and the public sector, and how in conjunction these different parties can work together to an outcome that is beneficial to the most important assets, the people of the Caribbean.”

Briceño added that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now highlighted the urgency for action to be taken as it relates to the region’s agriculture agenda.

‘You are part of the catalyst for change’ ––‘Top Cop’ tells Heads of Department, Branch Commanders

ACTING Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken on Thursday met with all Heads of Department and Branch Commanders of the Guyana Police Force and outlined his strategic vision for this noble organisation, and the direction in which he wants to see it move.

“As of today, you are part of the ‘catalyst for change group’. You are fortunate to be managing critical departments in the Guyana Police Force, hence, you have to improve your output by paying more attention to the management of resources within your span of control,” Hicken told the heads of department and branch commanders during the meeting, which was held in the Commissioner’s Boardroom at Force Headquarters, Eve

Leary, Georgetown.

Alluding to the fact that rotation builds capacity in an organisation, Hicken stated that underperformance will not be condoned; that, henceforth, a renewed vision is paramount if the Force is to achieve its mandate. “I am confident that you can do much more; and I will create an environment for us to achieve that,” he said.

He also warned that the ‘laissez-faire’ approach that obtains is not considered a suitable leadership style, due to the nature of the organisation, and that as such, it will be changed immediately.

“I have spoken to you, one-on-one, and I have given some of you an opportunity to correct your mistakes. I am a gentleman and a leader; not a boss. It is my belief that cohesiveness and pro-

fessionalism will help us to sustain existing structures that foster development in a holistic way,” Hicken declared, adding: “My focus for the Force is to improve professionalism, service to members of the public, mitigate crime and disorder, increase seizure of drugs and guns, and create safe communities.”

He also spoke to the importance of members of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) having a hands-on approach, and providing guidance for the heads of department.

He praised department heads for their contributions, and encouraged them to adapt to change to satisfy the demands, as mandated, in an effort to improve service to the public.

“If we want to bridge the gap with alacrity, then it has to be done through sports to support the current initiatives,” the Top Cop said, adding that the organisation is currently in the process of employing a Sports Development Officer.

He told the Head of the Sports Department to sit with the Strategic Planning Unit and derive a concept to have sports representatives decentralised in each region in a structured way, and they must be part of the outreach arrangements aimed at developing youths.

In closing, Hicken advised heads of department to inculcate moral attitudes that can take the Force forward in a positive way.

Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ (ag) Calvin Brutus, in his remarks, spoke of the many training and scholarship opportunities that members of the Force will benefit from, with many already benefiting from a number of training programmes.

He also spoke about the strategic plan and the need for all Heads of Department to submit a ‘needs analysis’

for their respective departments by next Friday.

The Deputy Commissioner ‘Admin’ also spoke on several administrative issues and initiatives, including the possibility of the Force opening an Air Wing to meet contemporary challenges.

REGULAR INTERACTIONS Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ (ag) Ravindradat Budhram also addressed the heads of department, and shared similar sentiments as expressed

by Hicken and Brutus, in terms of the strategic vision that is in place for the Force.

As Head of Operations, Budhram said he will be having regular interactions with the department heads as the leadership team moves the Force forward.

Head of the Presidential Guard Assistant Commissioner Edgar Thomas, also made brief remarks, saying he likes the vision and the new direction in which the Guyana Police Force is heading.

He told those present at the meeting that they should take pride in the fact that they are in a position to, under the direction of Hicken, play an integral part in transforming the image of the

Force in a positive way and to be a part of the catalyst for change and transformation that is so needed in the Force at this time.

Cuba-trained plastic surgeon, orthopaedic specialist return to serve

TWO more highly trained medical specialists, who have studied in Cuba, have returned to Guyana.

They are Dr Joseph Torres, Plastic Surgery and Burns Care Specialist and Dr Quasi Moore, Orthopaedic and Trauma Specialist.

According to the Guyana Embassy in Cuba, Dr Torres, who hails from Region Nine, was granted a Government of Guyana/Republic of Cuba scholarship in 2003 to pursue a degree in Human Medicine in Cuba, which he successfully completed in 2010.

Subsequently, he served in various medical institutions across Guyana, including the Annai Health Centre, the Aishalton District Hospital, the West Demerara Hospital and the Georgetown Public Hospital.

In 2016, Dr Torres was the recipient of a post-graduate scholarship to study in the People’s Republic of China, where he spent two years.

Thereafter, he went to Cuba where he completed a four-year programme in Plastic Surgery and Burns Care. On his return to Guyana he was employed at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Dr Moore is originally from Region Three, West Demerara. He obtained his

icine in Cuba in 2006 and secured his MD in 2013.

After returning to Guyana, he served at the West Demerara Regional Hospital and later did a six-month Hinterland Community Outreach Programme.

In 2017, Dr Moore obtained another Government of Guyana scholarship, this time to pursue post-graduate studies in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

He graduated from the University of Havana last month and has since returned to Guyana.

GDF Captain successfully completes training in India

GUYANA Defence Force (GDF) Captain Jashawn Norville has recently returned to Guyana following his successful completion of the Junior Command Course 165 at the Army War College in Mhow, India.

According to the GDF, the course was conducted over a four-month period — December 9, 2021 to March 9, 2022.

Captain Norville was among 497 officers from 10 countries who benefitted

from the programme. The objective of the course, the GDF noted, is to train officers of all Arms and Services including selected officers from friendly foreign countries in the tactical employment of a rifle company/ combat team as part of an infantry battalion/combat group in co-operation with air and other arms and services.

The programme exposed participants to 47 subject areas covering all aspects of warfare.

Guyana’s support remains with Ukraine – says President Ali ALTHOUGH Guyana abstained from voting on the suspension of Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council, President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali on Friday emphasised that the country’s position on the invasion of Ukriane remains the same.

“Let me be clear. We are very strong against this war, we are very strong against the invasion in Ukraine, we stand solidly with the rest of the world in condemning the war and in asking Russia to go back to diplomacy and in having this war brought to an end. That is without any doubt,” the President said.

On Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted to suspend Russia from the organisation’s human rights body, based on allegations that Russian soldiers attacked and killed civilians during the invasion of Ukraine.

Like Guyana, Barbados, Belize, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, also abstained.

In total, there were 93

President Ali addressing reporters on the sidelines of an event on Friday votes cast in favour of the resolution and 24 against, while 58 countries abstained.

According to President Ali, Guyana is working along with CARICOM and its position was based on a decision at the CARICOM level.

“We are working with CARICOM. We are coordinating an information flow and so to understand what is happening in the rest of the region because this was something that came up very quickly, you would appreciate that, and

its weighty decision,” he said adding: “This matter was discussed among [CARICOM] heads and there is an ongoing process. There are two things that are happening.

The UN has launched a process of doing the investigation to come upon the factual basis on what is happening in terms of human rights violations and what we have said is that once that report comes out then the findings of that report must be respected,” he added.

Additionally, Colonel Skeete highlighted that over the past two weeks, relationships were formed and encouraged that this is the level of cooperation that will be demonstrated in the lead-up to and during Exercise Tradewinds 2023, which will be held in Guyana.

Man gets six years for Increase in transportation fares attempted murder to interior locations unauthorised — Ministries of Public Works and Tourism, Industry and Commerce

THE unilateral increase in fares for water, air and land (m i n i b u s a n d h i re cars) transportation to interior locations by operators is unauthorised, the Ministries of Public Works and Tourism, Industry and Commerce said in a joint statement on Friday.

The statement said the government will continue to make the necessary interventions to ease the burdens faced by all Guyanese.

Already, the govern-

ment has implemented more than 20 measures in response to rising cost of living, including the complete removal of excise tax on fuel and the allocation of a $5 billion budget to buttress relief measures.

“We urge understanding and restraint and advise the public that this practice of increased fares is not a measure sanctioned by the administration,” the statement said.

Businessman charged over illegal gun, ‘ammo’ SENIOR Magistrate Leron Daly, on Friday, released a businessman on $250,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to two firearm-related charges.

Rondy Blyden of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Particulars of the charges allege that on April 4, 2022, at the Technical Services Unit (TSU), Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Blyden had a Glock

19 pistol along with 49 rounds of 9x19 ammunition in his possession, when he was not a licensed firearm holder.

The case was adjourned until May 27, 2022.

According to police facts, Blyden allegedly used a forged firearm approval letter to purchase a shotgun from a security firm located in Georgetown. He was told to go to the Police Headquarters to uplift the shotgun.

Blyden then went to

the officer-in-charge of the TSU arms stores and presented the forged document.

After perusing the letter, the officer discovered that it was forged and arrested Blyden. His motor car was searched and the Glock 19 pistol and 49 rounds of ammunition were found.

An investigation was carried out and it was discovered that Blyden had also forged an approval letter for the pistol.

ANTHONY Persaud, who is accused of stabbing a man with a pair of scissors during a robbery in 2016, was, on Friday, sentenced to six years imprisonment for the crime.

Persaud was sentenced at the Demerara High Court by Justice Brassington Reynolds.

Last month, he was arraigned and admitted that on March 22, 2016, in the county of Demerara, he wounded Navindra Budhu with intent to commit murder.

Prosecutor Simran Gajraj presented the state’s case, while attorney-at-law Teriq Mohammed is on record for Persaud.

told the court that Persaud and Budhu are not known to each other.

According to the prosecutor, on the day in question around 18:02 hours, the victim was walking along the University of Guyana (UG) Access Road in Cummings Lodge, when Persaud passed him on a bicycle.

Persaud subsequently dismounted the bicycle, approached him and pushed his hands into his pocket. The victim pushed Persaud away; however, this caused Persaud to become annoyed and he cuffed the victim to his face.

The victim retaliated and punched Persaud to his mouth and broke two of his teeth. Persaud then pulled out a pair of scissors and stabbed the victim six times about his body.

Persons who witnessed the ordeal rescued Budhu and also captured Persaud. Persaud was handed over to the police and was later charged.

GIRL power will be to the fore as 40 runners line up for the Grand National at Aintree today.

Trailblazing rider Rachael Blackmore, the first female jockey to triumph, is on 2021 victor Minella Times again.

Knee scan shows no new problem for England all-rounder Ben Stokes ENGLAND all-rounder Ben Stokes is planning a return to action for Durham in early May after a scan of his knee showed no new problem.

The 30-year-old has not been training after suffering pain in his left knee, during England’s tour of the West Indies in March.

Stokes still has some tenderness in his knee but he and England will continue to manage the problem alongside Durham.

He is set to appear in the County Championship next month.

Stokes bowled 99 overs and scored 194 runs across three Tests against West Indies as England lost the series 1-0.

He was also still recovering from a side strain that he picked up during the Ashes against Australia.

Inglis promoted, Richardsons lose CA contracts

DYNAMIC wicketkeeperbatter Josh Inglis has continued his rapid rise by earning a full Cricket Australia (CA) contract for the first time, but his state teammate Jhye Richardson has been dropped from the list of 20 players announced today.

Richardson played both Test and T20 cricket during the summer before he was rested from the recent tour of Pakistan, with chief selector George Bailey citing the need to manage the 25-year-old’s workload following a string of recent injuries.

Richardson is one of four players named on CA’s men’s contract 12 months ago and who has missed out, Thursday, joining fellow-quick Kane Richardson, former Test skipper Tim Paine and paceman James Pattinson, who has retired from international cricket.

Of the seven players named today who were not part of the 17-player group announced last year, six had earned upgrades during the past 12 months; Scott Boland, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Swepson.

The exception is Inglis, who has been picked in squads for all three formats in the past six months and made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka in February.

The 20 players are those selectors believe will represent Australia over the next 12 months, which will include their T20 World Cup defence, a full home summer as well as Test tours of Sri Lanka and India.

A maximum of 20 players can be contracted under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Cricketers’ Association, with Bailey saying it had been “challenging” to limit the group to 20 given the upcoming series across all three formats.

Players not named on Thursday can earn a full contract by earning 12 ‘upgrade points’ during the year, with a Test match worth five points, an ODI two points and a T20 one point.

Jhye Richardson underlined his enormous potential by taking a match-winning five-wicket haul in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide last December before also playing a role in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in February.

However, his struggle to maintain full fitness during the summer, which continued a frustrating run of injuries in recent years, may have counted against him.

“We believe this group provides us great coverage and versatility across all formats while others, as we saw in the past year, will continue to get opportunities to play a big part,” Bailey said in a statement “With a tour of Sri Lanka, a home World Cup, home summer and tour of India there is an enormous amount of cricket to be played where the strength of our squads and depth will be challenged.

“To contract just 20 players was challenging given the number of key series and the cycle of upcoming T20 and one-day World Cups, all of which will require varying skill sets and combinations.”

The ball gets rolling for election of ICC Chairman

THE board of the International Cricket Committee (ICC) meeting, now ungoing in Dubai, will finalise the process of election, or re-election, of the Chairman.

There remains a certain degree of ambiguity around whether the incumbent Chairman Greg Barclay will continue but should he choose not to, Cricbuzz understands that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may propose the name of Anurag Thakur.

There have been conflicting reports on whether Barclay will continue in the role of the ICC Chairman or not.

As per the ICC constitution, he is eligible to contest two more times.

Thakur, a former president of the BCCI and a former director of the ICC, is eligible to contest, just as many other former presidents -- from Sharad Pawar to N. Srinivasan.

Ganguly and Jay Shah, are eligible too. Notably, Shah attended an ICC board meeting last year and has the required qualification now.

It was learnt that Thakur’s name cropped up a few times in BCCI’s internal discussions on the matter. Being a Minister in the Central Government, he is not qualified to hold a position in the BCCI, as per the Lodha reforms, but he is very much eligible to be the head of the ICC. Whether he

will have the time to spare for cricket administration is another matter.

As previously reported

by Cricbuzz, a section of the BCCI thinks the Chairman position should come India’s way, with next year’s 50-over World Cup set to be held in the country. When the World Cup was held in India last time around, in 2011, Sharad Pawar was the head of the ICC. The BCCI, being an important player in the ICC, will have a large say in the election/re-election of the Chairman. The Indian cricket officials have a very good relationship with Barclay and it is unlikely that the BCCI will do anything to alter the current arrangement.

Things are expected to clear, though, when Barclay visits India -- either next week (which is more likely) or next month. His itinerary could not be ascertained immediately but the New Zealander has

agreed to visit Mumbai during the IPL, either on his way home from Dubai next week or on way to the UK in May. Whether or not Barclay will continue should be known by May 9, when the nomination for the position will take place. As was the rule last year, the candidates will be required to have two proposers from the 12 full members of the ICC and also will have to present their vision for the world body.

Should there be multiple candidates in the fray, the elections will be held on June 10. The candidate getting the two-third votes of the 15-member board will be declared the winner.

The process is expected to be formally approved at this week’s meeting to kickstart the election process.

The new Chairman will assume office at the annual conference of the ICC, to be held in Birmingham in July.

BEN Foakes hit an unbeaten 132 as Surrey declared on 428-8 on day two against county champions Warwickshire.

With 12 overs left to face, the Bears then made a bad start when they lost England opener Dom Sibley first ball.

A 27-minute rain break further slowed down the side’s scoring rate, before Petersen became Taijul’s second victim after having looked in good touch before the delay. Petersen made 64 before dancing down the track, missing the ball, and being struck on his pad.

The umpire had denied the appeal as it looked to be going down leg, but replays showed that the ball would go on to hit leg stump.

Titans maintain winning start thanks to Gill, Tewatia heroics SHUBMAN Gill and Rahul Tewatia starred as Gujarat Titans beat Punjab Kings by six wickets in a thrilling finale to maintain their winning start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

A career-best 96 off 59 balls for Gill laid the groundwork for Tewatia, who hit two sixes off the final two balls to get the Titans over the line for a third win from three matches.

Roy Singh pays heart-warming tribute to brother Lakhram ‘Mike’ Singh SOFTBALL stalwart and prominent businessman Lakhram ‘Mike’ Singh of Mike’s Pharmacy fame died suddenly last Thursday in Florida, USA, while competing in the South Florida Softball Cricket League (SFSCL) tournament. It is reported that suffered a massive heart attack while representing his team Wellman in the Legends Over-50 category at the Brian Piccolo Park, The late Lakhram ‘Mike’ Singh Florida.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Here is a heart-warming tribute from his brother Roy Singh: Lakhram Mike Singh was known by many. He was a gentleman and a gentle man was he. He was many things: a father, a husband, a son, a cousin, a friend and to me a brother.

He lived nothing short of a full life and greeted all persons of every class in the same manner, with a smile on his face and a helping hand. He lit our worlds with his unselfishness and generosity.

He was rarely seen unhappy because he always did what he loved and because of the love he showed. He was happy with the little things in life; the simple things and I admired that so much about him. He was a man of many talents, sports mainly cricket, running, business, but his best is his ability to bring out the best in every person that he came across.

Humble, loyal, giving, loving, thoughtful, and kind,I am proud that you are my brother ... truly a rare find. Supportive to those around you, in action, deed, and word, A toolbox of tricks and fixes, hard-working over being heard.

He played a massive innings, 61 and out, but forever in our hearts.

In closing, I will leave you with a few words. “Grief never ends but it changes.

It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief isn’t a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith.

At last Saturday’s presentation, both president Singh and secretary Anoop Basdeo again expressed sorrow at the tragic passing of softball stalwart and prominent Guyanese businessman Lakhram ‘Mike’ Singh who suffered what was reportedly a massive heart attack on the first day of the tournament

and died later in hospital.

The SFSCL was contemplating calling off the tournament but after consultations with Singh’s wife, who gave them the blessings to proceed, the tournament continued, nevertheless on a somewhat dampened note.

Wellman, which Singh formed and owned, also played their final preliminary round game yesterday but failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Prior to today’s presentation, Toronto Blizzards manager Azeem Khan had taken the opportunity to hand over an appreciation plaque to Singh and also extended congratulations to the president and executives of SFSCL for the wonderful job in staging the tournament.

The Toronto-based team finished as runners-up to Regal Legends in the Over-50 category.

Jaguar Bonds ‘back to his best’ after ACL injury

LONDON, England (CMC) – Guyana international Elliot Bonds, a 22-year-old midfielder who plays for English League One club Cheltenham Town, has told UK media he is back to his best after being sidelined for a lengthy spell with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

UK-born Bonds, who has made seven appearances for the Jaguars since making his debut in 2018, was on loan at Cheltenham – nicknamed the Robins – when he sustained the ACL injury against Scunthorpe United in November 2020.

He joined the Robins last summer but spent the winter on loan at fifth-tier National League side Kidderminster Harriers as he regained fitness.

Since returning to Whaddon Road, Bonds has been a regular starter as the Robins, who currently sit 12th with five matches remaining, push for their highest-ever league finish.

“It was difficult to start with in terms of getting back to where I was at and even pushing on.

The start was tough,” Bonds said.

“Kidderminster was an important step in that process, but I

think it was good. Me and the gaffer and everyone involved were kind of on the same page with getting back to where I was at physically, mentally.

“From Christmas, I’ve been really impressed and happy with how I’ve been doing for the club in the league and from there on I think it’s been going really well for me, and the team as well.”

Bonds made only four appearances for Cheltenham during his first spell with the club, before it was cut short after he ruptured his ACL. He signed on a permanent two-year deal from Championship outfit Hull City last July, but did not feature for Cheltenham

in the league until Boxing Day after being sent on loan to Kidderminster.

Bonds scored his first goal for Cheltenham in February in a 2-1 win over Sunderland.

When asked if he was back to his best, he said: “Definitely.”

He added: “Last year when I was here on loan it was only four games, so I felt like I didn’t really prove myself or get both my feet in the door.

“To do that this second half of the season, I’m obviously very happy with how it’s gone for myself. I just want to kick on and continue to improve and show what I can do.”

England series win marked ‘huge progress’, says Simmons B R I D G E TO W N , B a r b a d o s , (CMC) – Head coach Phil Simmons believes West Indies’ performance during last month’s Test series win over England, has signalled huge strides by the Caribbean side.

West Indies entered the three-Test series as underdogs but after grinding out draws in the opening matches in Antigua and Barbados, stunned England by ten wickets well within four days in the third Test in Grenada.

Pointing to the batting especially, Simmons said a maturity had emerged among that group, reflected in their situation awareness throughout the series.

“I think they have made a huge [amount of] progress,” Simmons noted.

“I think for us to be able to understand how to bat on last days to save Test matches and also to be able to understand how we needed to bat in a situation … for two days – something we haven’t done for a while.

“I think that is progress in itself and to me that was a big pleasure to sit down and watch our batsmen just grind out a session and don’t lose any wickets and still score 80 runs and little things like that.

“I think there was a lot of progress being made during that series.”

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite, adjudged Man-of-the-Series, was the leading scorer on either side with 341 runs at an average of 88.

The series win followed on the heels of the white-ball side’s 3-2 triumph also over England in a five-match Twenty20 series last January in Barbados.

West Indies have continued to excel in the shortest format more so than Tests and Simmons said the presence of franchise leagues had contributed to this pace of development.

“The progression will always be different, from the point of view of the amount of cricket that’s played,” he explained.

“I think because there is a lot of learning being done up here as in the international level, the white ball players have more playing time. Long ago we used to have playing time in the Counties and in the Leagues so our red ball team improved a lot quicker.

“Now, there’s a lot more of those white ball leagues so the ability to do things in white ball cricket makes them improve a lot quicker than the amount of red ball [cricket being played].

“For two years [due to COVID-19] we didn’t have any red ball cricket [in the region] except internationals so definitely in that way, the white ball [teams] will improve quicker.”

West Indies are currently ranked eighth in Tests, ninth in One-Day Internationals and seventh in T20 Internationals.

Fernandes battles through pain to win gold TO win that elusive gold at the Pan American Championships, Nicolette Fernandes had to utilise all of her experience and manage her ageing body.

On Wednesday, she stopped Colombia’s Laura Tovar to win the title in Guatemala. The scores read 11-9, 11-5, 11-4 but in her post-game analysis, she said it was far from easy.

“It was really challenging; the scoreline might not reflect it, but it was a tough match. I think I have a lot of experience underneath me,” Fernandes stated in a News Room report.

“I have been enjoying squash with no pressure and that also has a part of how I played this tournament … it is just crazy; I still can’t believe I won it. It has been an elusive title for me in my professional career, and the fact that I am now retired and this happens, I still can’t wrap my head around it because I did not

expect it.”

Emotional and still stunned over the success, Fernandes added, “That is the funny thing about sport and life. It is all about timing … I just wanted to come and enjoy squash in this competitive environment.”

She is grateful for the support, along with members of the Guyana team and key members of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) who made the trip to Latin America a reality despite the issues with funding.

“This week has been really physically hard, quite painful … with each match my body deteriorated, and as I get older that would be even worse. It was hard to get out of bed this morning … it is always nice when you feel sore and you think it is worth it … I am just going to play as long as I enjoy and I am able to,” she envisioned her future in the sport.

Arrowhead League launched THE Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), in conjunction with 100 Degrees Sports and FK Sports, launched the first National Track and Field Grand Prix series yesterday morning.

The Arrowhead League will encompass five different track meets that will be invitational, showcasing Guyana’s best athletes.

At the Press Conference at AAG headquarters, president of AAG, Aubrey Hutson, explained the format of the league.

“It’s a five-part series and it will have a relegation system; for instance in the 100 metres if you do not make the finals then we will bring in a fresh eight sprinters to run the next set of 100 metres but it will be strictly invitational,” Hutson shared.

“The significance of the event is to promote development of the sport on the local front, where athletes can have a competitive environment similar to the Diamond League,” Joseph highlighted.

Meanwhile, proprietor of FK Sports, Felix Walker noted the reason for signing on with the event that he views as visionary.

He said, “This is long-term and as a company we are happy to be part of anything that promotes the development of athletes and our young people and we hope that Corporate Guyana can see the vision and come on board,” Walker noted.

The first two events of the series will be held on April 30 and May 1 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora. West Coast Demerara.
