AMDIST rapid economic growth, locally, Jumbo Jet Auto Sales has signed a contract valuing US$40 million with Sinotruk Incorporated, for the provision of reliable equipment to meet the contractors’ demands to execute existing and upcoming projects.

The contract was signed

by General Manager of the Caribbean Sinotruk International, Taonaijie, and Nasrudeen Mohamed, founder of Jumbo Jet Auto Sales- a prominent local distributor of machinery and equipment.

Through this deal, Sinotruk, which is a company based in Hong Kong, will be providing 500 new trucks to Jumbo Jet over the next few years.

Mohamed, following the signing of the agreement, said that the demand for better quality trucks is growing

in Guyana due to the rapid increase in private and public infrastructural work.

A study done by Jumbo Jet found that foreign-used trucks last only one to five years, whereas the new trucks will be able to work efficiently for over 10 years.

The company said that there will be all types of trucks available for sale to meet any demand. Some options include, but are not limited to, dump trucks, tractor unit/hauler, flat bed, all-

wheel drive, 8X4, 6X6, 6X4 and much more. Spare parts for these new machinery will also be available.

Taonaijie said the signing was important to his company, since it affords them the opportunity to work with a reputable distributor such as Jumbo Jet. Mohamed, in turn, said he is very optimistic about this partnership to help provide new, quality trucks to his country.

He also noted that with the booming economy, he is

grateful for the opportunity of being the only distributor of this brand.

According to Taonaijie, he is hoping to make Guyana the centre of the Caribbean market given the expected economic boom from the oil resources. His company, he said, will also satisfy the Guyanese market effectively and efficiently.

More job opportunities will also be created with the arrival of brand-new trucks being imported and new showrooms which will be

created by Jumbo Jet Auto Sales to display the variety of trucks.

The companies are also mulling the establishment of an assembling factory in Guyana, which would, in the long term, lower costs and create more jobs in various expertise.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the local economy has been a magnet for investors, who have expressed an interest to invest in massive projects across the various economic sectors.

In 2021, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Go-Invest, Dr. Peter Ramsaroop, had said that 65 per cent of the private investments made in 2021 were from locals.

Dr. Ramsaroop said that even as the economy continues to grow, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, and, by extension, the government, are committed to having Guyanese benefit from the investment opportunities that are available locally.

In light of completed and ongoing projects, authorities

have been investing in initiatives to enhance the skills of the local workforce.

Among the programmes the government has rolled out so far is the 20,000 online scholarships initiative, which is being facilitated through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL).

The objective of this and other initiatives is to ensure that every Guyanese of working age is equipped with the skills necessary for employment in the sector of his/her choice.

“An educated and highly-skilled workforce is critical to our competitiveness as a destination for investment, but also critical in ensuring that the Guyanese people are able to get jobs,” Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, had said in a past interview with the Guyana Chronicle.

Further, he related: “We want to create an environ-

ment where every single Guyanese who is of working age is equipped with skills that make them employable. Every Guyanese of employment age should have access to opportunities to acquire skills that will make them employable; and we are planning to do this at every level.”

Dr. Ramsaroop, too, had said personal enhancement, whether through skills training or academia, will be crucial going forward.

Big boost for trade between Guyana, US — as Bilateral Chamber of Commerce signs MoU with local private sector

THE Bilateral Chamber of Commerce and the Private Sector Commission (PSC) have pledged to leverage their combined resources to strengthen economic relations between the United States and Guyana.

The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a ceremony in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday.

The MoU promotes trade and investment across sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, industry and education.

The agreement, signed

by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce, Aida Araissi, and Chairman of the PSC, Paul Cheong, is the result of a visit by a trade mission from the Bilateral Chamber of Commerce to Guyana in March 2022.

was witnessed by Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat; US Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch; ExxonMobil executives, Dr. John Ardill and Alistair Routledge, and CEO of the Guyana Office for Investment (Go-Invest), Dr. Peter Ramsaroop.

Additional attendees included executives from leading energy, real estate, and

technology companies.

Following the signing of the agreement, Araissi said: “We are proud to be ranked as a top producing contractor for the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

Our Bilateral Chamber and USTDA programmes represent over US$100 billion dollars of exported US goods, services, and advanced technologies and we’re looking forward to bringing that kind of expertise to Guyana, to grow the local content.”

The chamber and the PSC will work together in the coming months to organise more trade missions that bring together businesses from the US and Guyana.

Cheong said: “Today is a historic day. We will work on building a partnership that members of both sides will be proud of. This is just the beginning.”

The Bilateral Chamber, located in Houston, Texas, has an expansive network of more than 36,000 subscribers, representing small to large enterprises.

The chamber is a trusted partner to the US Trade and Development Agency, the US Departments of Commerce, State, and Energy, as well as trade development agencies in key markets around the world.

THE President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro is scheduled for a visit to Guyana today.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Brazilian President is visiting at the invitation of Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali. During the visit, the two Presidents will discuss a range of issues of bilateral interest, as well as developments at the regional and global levels.

“The two countries share a broad bilateral agenda, covering issues such as infra-

structure development, energy cooperation, trade and investment, health, agriculture, and defence and security cooperation, and these will be among the issues to be addressed by the two Heads of State in Georgetown,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said.

Guyana and Brazil established diplomatic relations in August 1968, and enjoy strong ties of friendship and cooperation.

Earlier this year, in addressing the importance of the visit, the Brazilian President, said: “We have a number of

important issues and opportunities for both Guyana and Brazil that I wanted to highlight, even before our meeting, so our technical teams can start some work.”

The President had listed several areas that are critical for both countries to move their relationship forward, including energy and food security, telecommunication,

infrastructure integration and trade.

He also pointed out that due to their geographical locations, the two nations must make strong statements in linking their territories.

The Guyanese Head of State had said that in addition to oil and gas, expanding opportunities in the other nonoil natural resources sectors

such as bauxite will create an opportunity for a direct link to northern Brazil and further afield that can “create an excellent platform for us to develop an integrated project”.

As it relates to trade, currently, there is an existing Partial Scope Agreement that aims to foster bilateral trade flows by the exchange of

This, President Ali had said, is under negotiation to be expanded, since Guyana wants to increase its quota, especially as it relates to rice being exported to Brazil.

Dharmic Sabha acknowledges resilience, indomitable spirit of indentured immigrants

AS the 184th Indian Arrival Day was celebrated on Thursday, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (GHDS) said that it is important to acknowledge the indefatigable and indomitable spirit of the Indian indentured Immigrants who came on May 5, 1838 and also to all those who came through the indentureship system.

“Today, we reflect on the immense and incredible contributions of our ancestors who arrived as indentured immigrants to then British Guiana. Arrival Day gives us the opportunity to acknowledge and salute the visible and tangible imprints of their presence and impact in multiple spheres in our country,” GHDS related.

From the earliest days of struggle and sacrifice, GDHS said those persons demonstrated remarkable resilience and courage in the face of hardship, callous and inhumane living and working conditions.

There are multiple stories of their resistance against colo-

nialism and their struggle for an independent Guyana and their fight for better conditions.

“Our country has benefitted tremendously from their invaluable contributions in diverse spheres. Their industriousness in the agricultural sector in the earliest years and thereafter have been impactful and benefitted Guyana’s economy for decades,” the Sabha said.

The organisation added: “We recognise the remarkable foundation they laid for their descendants and all Guyanese to build on. We are grateful for their dedication in preserving a rich culture filled with beautiful traditions, creating a heritage that contributes to Guyana’s kaleidoscope of festivals, cultural practices, national cuisine and everyday life.”

People, the body said, could learn from their courage, unity against undemocratic practices and colonialism, consistent and ceaseless work to develop their community and country and their respect and love for each

The organisation related that as descendants of those who came as indentured immigrants, persons have much to be proud of and to be grateful for and to build on.

Beyond cultural links

Over the past several decades, there has been a renewed momentum in the outreach that the Government of India has undertaken with respect to strengthening relations with Guyana and other Caribbean countries. Multiple high-ranking officials have paid visits to the Caribbean region and several leaders from the region, including all Guyanese Presidents going back to Forbes Burnham, except Desmond Hoyte and Mrs. Janet Jagan, have visited India. All of the visits were aimed at boosting bilateral and/or regional ties with India. The relationship with Guyana has been on an upward tick with recent visits by trade and investment delegations from India.

The latest political uptick is the visit by Guyana’s Minister of External Affairs,

Hon. Hugh Todd to New Delhi where he held talks with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subramaniam Jaishankar; Minister Todd also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signalling the importance given to the relationship by the Indian Government. This is a reflection of the significance placed by India on the relationship with Guyana and the Caribbean nations. The importance of relations with Guyana is further reflected in the amount of time spent by and the posturing of Minister Jaishankar in holding lengthy bi-lateral discussions.

The aim behind Todd’s visit is to further the relations between the two longtime allies, shoring up bilateral engagements and partnership agreements already in place or in progress and entering into new ones.

Minister Todd praised In-

dia for the developmental assistance rendered to Guyana since independence. India has provided huge amounts of financing and other forms of aid to Guyana since independence in 1966 totalling billions in American dollars.

Even during the pandemic, India was kind towards Guyana and the developing nations. During the widespread gloom of the COVID-19 pandemic, India kept almost all its supply lines to other countries open thereby ensuring that critical medical equipment, medicines and other supplies could reach Guyana, Latin America, the Caribbean, and other developing nations; even wealthy countries like Canada, USA, UK, and several others in Europe were beneficiaries of India’s generosity. The wrath of a devastating wave of the virus that took many lives in India in

April/May 2021 did not stop India from helping Guyana and other countries. Under India’s landmark ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative that started in mid-2020, India gifted hundreds of tonnes of medical supplies to poor countries including Guyana. This further serve to prove the significance that India has been attaching to its relations with Guyana and Caribbean nations.

In the course of Todd’s visit, the Foreign Ministers discussed a plethora of issues that were bilateral, regional as well as global in nature.

These included, but were not limited to developmental partnerships, healthcare services, education, culture, agriculture, trade, commerce, technology transfer, Informational Technology, finance, and other economic considerations and common issues of interest. Guyana is already

the beneficiary of concessional lines of credit, grants, loans, thousands of scholarships and developing other capacity-building initiatives with Guyana.

The India-Guyana relationship is firmly rooted in deep historical, political, people-to-people, and cultural ties. Even before Guyana attained Independence from the colonial rule of Britain in May 1966, prominent leaders of the national movement in India would issue calls of support for the anti-colonial liberation struggle in Guyana and the Caribbean region that were taking place since the 1950s. And several Indian Guyanese figures were supportive of India’s freedom struggle since the early 1900s.

Despite the deepened ties with India, spanning across the seven decades since India’s independence, there is

room for further expansion, especially now that Guyana is transitioning into a petroleum energy economy. India, which has reputable petroleum engineering institutes, can provide training to Guyanese to work in and manage the emerging oil and gas sector. Government should request such assistance; India is sure to respond positively. Guyana should also seek to bolster co-operation in emerging sectors such as health, tourism, new and renewable energy, high-yield farm production, technology transfer, oil refinery, agro-processing, and non-traditional or ayurvedic medicine, among others.

It is hoped that the Todd’s visit to India will lead to a boost in the growing trade and investment relations between India and Guyana.

Is the City Council and the Mayor unaware of what Georgetown has become?

Dear Editor,

I REMEMBER the days when Georgetown was proudly referred to as the Garden City. Regretfully, sadly and unfortunately, today and for the past 30 or so years, it has descended into the ‘Garbage City’, and referred to as such by locals and visitors.

I recently had to go to someone at 322 New Market Street, North Cummingsburg, incidentally, immediately opposite the Georgetown Public

Hospital and was appalled at the garbage and stench emanating from the vacant lot adjacent to the building I had to visit. It is obviously a dumping ground for garbage from the various stands that now form part of the landscape of not only this part of Georgetown, but most of the arear where there are opportunities to make a “quick dollar”, regardless and with absolutely no consideration for the health and safety of persons who have to frequent those areas. There is a prolif-

eration of what I consider to be both permanent and “make shift” structures selling from food to items needed by patients in the hospital, and I dare say anything in between.

I saw a few weeks ago very high level publicity of a “clean up campaign” led by no one else than His Excellency the President, in the City of Georgetown, which was followed up by other high level functionaries in the government, in other areas of Guyana.

Unfortunately, the “other

side” of the political scenario felt it convenient to boycott that commendable effort, and what some considered, out of shame, did their own semi clean up soon after.

Both campaigns, according to popular opinion went “to waste”, absolutely no pun intended.

Is the City Council and the Pandit Mayor (and their predecessors, including the Elder, Hamilton Green, under whose Mayorship this deterioration started) unaware of what Georgetown has be-

come? Are these persons not ashamed to know that they are presiding over a city that is stink and is a willing and can be a prime participant for an epidemic waiting to happen?

As I’ve said and written on before, I am of the opinion that the City Council as presently constituted has proven themselves to be incapable of solving not only this problem, but other equally important matters of the City.

In the interim, I hope that this letter “catches the eye”

of someone in authority to immediately change the location of the garbage dump opposite the Georgetown Public hospital and relocate it to its proper place, in the interest of those who live and frequent that area.

It would be extremely easy to find and prosecute the violators of the dumping in this and other areas, but only if there is the will to do so.

INTERNATIONAL Midwifery Day is celebrated on the 5th of May and the theme for year 2022 is “100 years of progress”.

During the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors, nurses, midwives and maternity support workers have risked their lives to provide maternal care at the low, moderate and high risk stage to women and their families.

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) joins with the world in thanking them for their sterling contribution, especially in the challenging health environment.

At a simple presentation ceremony on Wednesday, the GPHC showed its appreciation by hosting an event to acknowledge the outstanding services of all the midwives.

Resilience, adaptation hallmark of Indian culture in Guyana

— High Commissioner, Dr. K.J. Srinivasa INDO-GUYANESE still retain their culture despite settling down in a far-off country for almost two centuries and the most beautiful aspect of their culture in Guyana is their strength of resilience and adaptation.

That was according to High Commissioner of India to Guyana, Dr. K.J. Srinivasa, who was at the time speaking at a virtual symposium marking 184 years of East Indian Arrival in Guyana, hosted by the University of Guyana, via a webinar on Wednesday.

Under the theme “Contributions of our unsung heroes to Guyana”, the High Com-

missioner said it was not an exaggeration to say that Indian culture has tremendous influence on the overall culture of Guyana, be it music, food, language, art and costumes, amongst others.

“As we are all aware, Indian religious rituals, cuisine, customs and traditions have indeed enriched the country’s cultural mosaic. Indian enterprise diversified the local economy. Indian descendants ventured successfully into politics and were active in social organisations and in sport. Indians have achieved prominence in all aspects of national life. ed respectful relations with other races and, in so doing, fostered the development of a more cohesive nation.

They are an integral part of the political system and, together with other ethnic groups, contributed to the evolution of Guyana’s demography, economy and society,” Dr. Srinivasa explained.

The High Commissioner noted that the Indian diaspora in Guyana has played and is playing a crucial role in the economic, political and social development of the country.

The indentured Indians after the completion of their contracts took to their occupations and displayed the diversity of their natural and acquired talents.

“Gradually, Indians began to move into market gardening, milk production, rice and other agricultural production, thus ensuring the food security of the country. Some moved into commerce selling mainly groceries and haberdashery and later consumer durables like cars and agricultural machines and since they had to be very com-

petitive to survive, the consumers benefitted, the occupations of ‘free’ Indians displayed the diversity of their natural and acquired talents,” he underscored.

EXCELLED They excelled in all areas of development and careers most notably in business, politics and the legal and medical field, he said.

One other aspect of Indian origin, he added, was the introduction of two religions: Hinduism and Islam which were strengthened and their places of worship were

renewed and Indian culture began to contribute to mainstream national culture.

“All cultures are unique, rich and meaningful in their own ways. The same can be said for the Indo-Guyanese culture of Guyana. In many ways, the overall cultural stage of Guyana was significantly shaped by Indians.

Their culture has many branches and roots; it is more than what the eye meets. Perhaps, the most beautiful aspect of the Indo-Guyanese culture in Guyana is the strength of its resilience and adaptation,” Dr. K.J. Srinivasa said.

The Indian culture in Guyana, he explained differs from that of its ancestors’ in India.

From the language they speak, all the way to how they cook the curried dishes, all of which are different but still yet significant.

“That is evidence that culture can adapt and still be preserved at the same time. Their ancestors had to adapt to this tropical region, they had not the tools and ingredients to cook their traditional foods, they had not the garments to make their traditional wear and they also lost their mother tongue along the way

and adapted to western languages,” he said.

Dr. K.J. Srinivasa continued: “Nonetheless, what we know today as the ‘Indo-Guyanese Culture’ is undoubtedly significant and relevant to who and what are known as Guyanese. There was a struggle to maintain the Indian culture because of the personal struggles those before now faced on the plantation.

However, they have preserved Indian culture creditably and successful because across Guyana, religion and culture has been spread and practised.”

However, he noted that the language is something that has suffered tremendously. Unlike Guyana’s neighbours Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago where Hindi or in fact, Bhojpuri is spoken, Hindi is not spoken as a main language in Guyana.

VERY PROUD India, he said is very proud of the achievements by the Indo-Guyanese diaspora and their role in the development of Guyana.

“I consider it indeed a matter of great honour and privilege for me to have been appointed to serve as the Indian

High Commissioner to this Girmitiya land. The priority of the current Government of India led

by Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, is to build everlasting links with the Indian Diaspora the world over, especially with our Indian Diaspora in the Girmitiya lands including Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Mauritius, Fiji and South Africa. In fact, Indian Prime Minister Modi ji had been to Guyana around 19992000 and he fondly remembers the people and country of Guyana,” Dr. Srinivasa expressed.

He said he sincerely hopes that Indian Arrival Day is used suitably to reflect and show appreciation to the contributions that the Indian ancestors in Guyana have made and find ways and means to preserve the existing and metamorphosised version of the Indian culture.

“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the souls of its people,” said the High Commissioner in quoting Mahatma Gandhi.

He added: “Let then in Guyana, the Indian culture be reflective through the goodness and light of our hearts and souls.”

The 2022 global press freedom index saw Guyana’s ranking improved by a whopping 17 points.

This year’s inaugural conference served to reinforce the unwavering positions of the PPP/C administration in support of free environment for the Guyanese press, with the President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, declaring, in emphatic

terms, that his administration could be judged on its record, even as he committed to never supporting nor embracing any surveillance or other clandestine measure against the press that could undermine its freedoms.

In keeping with the government’s commitment, even as the Department of Public Affairs moves to consolidate the recommen-

dations of the symposium into actionable outcomes, there also plans to continue engagement with key actors across the local spectrum.

US$2M contract signed for feasibility study of Guyana-Suriname Bridge

GUYANA and Suriname are set to benefit from major economic developments with the construction of a bridge across the Corentyne River, which will connect the two countries.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, joined his Surinamese counterpart, Riad Nurmohamed, on Wednesday, for the signing of a US$2 million contract with WSP Caribbean.

The Trinidad-based consultancy firm will conduct a seven-month study to determine the best design, build, finance and model for the bridge through a Public-Private Partnership.

Minister Edghill said the bridge is one the infrastructural projects that is high on the agenda for both countries.

“This bridge is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a vision for the further development of two nations being realised. Development practitioners have agreed that bridges are key drivers of economic activity, ensuring the increased efficiency of trade, rapid exchange of ideas and quick access to services for those who need them most. Co-operation at this level means less delays, and more progress for both of our populations.

“The Corentyne River Bridge is both a physical connection between two landmasses, as well as a social connection between two peoples. When completed, it will forge stronger cultural bonds and encourage more knowledge-sharing activities across our common border,”

Edghill said.

The bridge will remove the constraints of current schedules and space when travelling with the Canawaima Ferry, and make

way for a five-hour-long drive from Georgetown to Paramaribo, resulting in increased efficiency and safety.

Apart from reduced travel time, the bridge will play a significant role in development for both nations in various sectors.

A landing in Guyana or Suriname will afford tourists the opportunity to seamlessly travel the neighbouring borders, boosting tourism growth in both nations as the bridge will be strategically designed to pass through the untouched lands of Lange Is-

land, in the Corentyne River.

There is also enormous potential for commercialisation and development of a free-trade zone with hotels, resorts and all the forms of entertainment that will attract tourists.

The Corentyne Bridge will provide easy access to deep-water facilities in Guyana and Suriname, enabling easy movement of goods and services to support offshore activities.

With the new bridge and the opening of fertile agricultural lands, Guyana and

Suriname will be positioned as major food suppliers to CARICOM, achieving the goal of reducing the food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025.

Additionally, Minister Edghill noted that the bridge will aid in enhancing South American connections.

Minister Nurmohamed said as the Surinamese Government enters this new stage, the road from Paramaribo will be upgraded.

“We have decided that it should be upgraded so that we have a very good road for tourists so that we can boost the development, especially in Nickerie and, overall, in both countries,” he said.

Meanwhile, Suriname’s Technical Assistant for capital infrastructure projects, Kees Boender, said the bridge is expected to have a lifespan of 100 years and will require little maintenance.

Trio arrested with ‘ganja’ during Lethem operation

AS the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) continues to tackle micro-trafficking in Lethem, Region 9 (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo), three men were arrested, on Thursday, with a quantity of cannabis.

According to a CANU release, the three men were

arrested on the outskirts of Lethem, close to the Guyana-Brazil border. The trio was allegedly found with 31 small Ziploc bags of cannabis, weighing a total of 48 grams.

The men are currently in the custody of authorities as the investigation continues.

Body of Maria’s Lodge farmer found at Mashabo THE decomposed body of a 54-year-old hunter and rice farmer of Maria’s Lodge, Region Two, was recently discovered at Mashabo, according to police reports.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the body of Suresh Dyal, which had two gunshot wounds, was found by two hunters on Monday.

left home Thursday last to go hunting and was expected back on the Essequibo Coast by Monday. She said that she called him several times, but his phone went unanswered.

Prior to his demise, he would usually go hunting in the Mashabo area regularly, as this was his favourite hobby.

“My son is very quiet, he doesn’t trouble no one… he left with his tractor and licensed shotgun and I didn’t know that was the last I would see my son,” the mother said.

She said she received a call from one of the hunters informing her that her son died. The woman, who was left in shock, subsequently informed the victim’s other relatives.

The relatives then journeyed to the backdam to locate his body, and there, they found him shirtless and lying in a clump of bushes.

His head was swollen and his body had two gunshot wounds. According to relatives, it took them almost a day to locate Dyal’s body. The body was transported to the Suddie Public Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

The man’s tractor along with his licensed shotgun was brought out on the Essequibo Coast. The Guyana Police Force has since launched an investigation into the matter.

Driver dies, two children injured in Windsor Forest accident A 27-YEAR-OLD driver is now dead after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a concrete bridge along the Windsor Forest public road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), yesterday (Thursday) morning.

Dead is Kelvin Ghisiawan of Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), according to a police statement which said the accident occurred around 04:15 hrs.

the vehicle, 12-year-old Alyna Deoliver, and six-yearold Josiemla Mafra, both of Kaneville, EBD, reportedly survived the crash with bodily injuries. The children were said to be in the backseat.

Police said the now-dead man, driver of motor car #PSS 3117, was speeding east along the northern side of the Windsor Forest Public Road.

The law enforcement agency said Ghisiawan lost control of the motor car, swerved south, and drove off of the said road.

The vehicle then reportedly crashed into a concrete bridge located on the southern side of the road.

As a result of the impact, the car was extensively damaged.

The police report said Ghisiawan was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two children, however, were conscious and admitted as patients at that hospital.

This is an active police investigation.

Samuel Medas rounds up 14 nominations at Caribbean gospel awards

By Tamica Garnett LOCAL Psalmist, and former Mashramani Soca Monarch, Samuel Medas, is at it again with his award-winning style, clinching 14 nominations in the 2022 Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Award, which will be held on July 3 at the Myles E. Munroe Diplomat Centre in The Bahamas.

Medas is the third highest nominee, following behind Trinbagonian singer/songwriter, Joel “Positive” Murray, who has 18 nominations, and Sherwin Gardner with 15.

Over 40 categories are listed for awards. The award nominations were announced in April during a live broadcast on the awarding body’s social media accounts.

“I found out the next morning when I woke up and watched the Facebook announcement and tallied it up.

“I was surprised at being the third highest nominee. But the amount of nominations you receive is dependent on the diversity of your music, and I’d (sic) be dipping my feet in different genres over the past years,” Medas shared in a recent interview with The Buzz.

The categories Medas has been nominated in span numerous genres including Reggae, Soca, Hip Hop, Christian Contemporary, Calypso, and another called, DJ Collaboration.

“It’s always a learning process when approaching other genres. Some of my records

are collaborations with other regional artists that are versed in a particular genre. So, I’m never too lost. But I take my time and learn the ins and outs of making any genre of music,” the 33-year-old musician shared.

“Stadium” has been nominated for “Outstanding Soca Performance”, “Outstanding Calypso Soca Vocal Performance (Male)”, “Outstanding

Red carpet, audience prizes for ‘Mother & Daughter’ pageant tomorrow

AHEAD of the Mother’s Day observance this Sunday, some 20 mothers and their daughters will take to the stage at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) on Saturday evening to display their special bond through fashion and character as Supa Stylistics’ “Mother & Daughter Pageant” makes its official return.

The pageant will see six mothers with their little girls compete in the junior category, six mothers and daughters showcasing casual wear in the middle category, and eight mothers and their daughters showcasing evening wear in senior category.

Speaking with The Buzz recently, pageant organiser, Dr Sulan Fung, said preparations have been coming along smoothly, and patrons can look forward to a new and improved aesthetics this year.

“Preparations are going very well. We’ve just been to the National Cultural Centre where we started building the stage. It’s something that the National Cultural Centre has never seen before, we’re going high on technology. We have everything in place on stage,” she shared.

However, with a full blown red carpet affair planned for the grand return after two years, this year the pageant will be about so much more than just what will be going on the stage.

He also won “Regional Artist of the Year” at the Sterling Gospel Music Awards in Jamaica in 2019.

In 202, he wrestled the Mashramani Soca Monarch crown in a grand performance.

He returned to the competition earlier this year and finished third.

This year alone has been quite a busy one for Medas,

who dropped his latest album “Nations of Worshippers” in January this year.

His Caribbean tour included performances at the “Praise Fest” in Grenada, the “Our God is Champion Concert” in Antigua, and other stops in Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts and Nevis, and in New York, and Texas in the United States (U.S.A).

Medas would’ve also been among the creative greats who represented Guyana at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the Guyanese contingent were well-praised for its performances.

Medas has also done a number of packed out local shows, and has been busy building his brand, signing marketing deals with Fruta and Digicel, and promoting his own line of branded hoodies.

Man accused of attacking comic Dave Chappelle charged with four misdemeanours (REUTERS) - A 23-yearold man, accused of attacking comedian, Dave Chappelle during a performance, was charged, on Thursday, with four misdemeanour criminal counts after the city’s district attorney declined to bring more serious charges.

Isaiah Lee, who was subdued after tackling Chappelle, 48, to the stage floor on Tuesday evening, was charged by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office with battery, possession of a weapon with intent to assault and two other misdemeanour counts.

“This alleged attack has got to have consequences,” City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a videotaped message.

Feuer announced the misdemeanour charges just hours after the city’s top

prosecutor, District Attorney George Gascon, declined to prosecute Lee. A spokesman for Gascon said a review of the evidence did not show felony conduct.

Under California law, a misdemeanour carries a maximum sentence of one year in county jail. In Los Angeles, Feuer’s office prosecutes misdemeanours while the district attorney is responsible for felony cases.

Police say Chappelle was performing at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday when Lee rushed at the comedian, knocking him to the ground. Lee was subdued near the back of the stage as he sought to flee. Chappelle returned to the stage after a short break and went on with the show, ad-libbing jokes about the incident. He did not appear to be injured.

“As unfortunate and unsettling as the incident was, Chappelle went on with the show,” his spokesperson, Carla Sims, said in a statement on Wednesday, crediting Chris Rock and fellow comedian-actor, Jamie Foxx with helping to “calm the crowd.”

The attack sparked comparisons to a bizarre incident during the Academy Awards ceremony in March at which actor, Will Smith smacked comic, Chris Rock onstage, apparently over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock joined Chappelle onstage a short time after the attack, took the microphone and quipped, “Was that Will Smith?”

Essex fined after pleading guilty to charges related to racist comment (REUTERS) - Essex have been fined 50 000 pounds ($61 835) by an independent Cricket Discipline Commission panel after the English county club pleaded guilty to two charges in relation to a racist com-

ment made at a board meeting in 2017.

Essex chairman John Faragher resigned from his role in November 2021 after the allegation that he used racist language, although he strongly denied the incident.

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which announced the decision yesterday, said Essex had also been cautioned about further conduct and issued with a reprimand. It added that 15 000 pounds of the fine was suspended for two years.

“The charge was in two parts - relating to the comment made at the meeting, and the subsequent failure by Essex CCC to conduct an appropriate, or any, subsequent investigation,” a statement by the ECB said.

Faragher’s decision to quit Essex came a day after fellow county side Yorkshire’s former chief executive Mark Arthur resigned in the fallout from the allegations of institutional racism made by their former player Azeem Rafiq.

Sir Andy, a former Leeward Islands and Combined Islands cricketer, played both Tests and ODIs for West Indies from 1974 to 1983.

He also played extensive county cricket for Hampshire County Cricket Club and Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

ACTOR and writer Stephen Fry will become the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Fry, 64, will take over from former England captain Clare Connor, who nominated him for the role, on October 1, 2022.

The broadcaster and comedian is a lifelong cricket fan and has been an MCC member since 2011.

“I am honoured and proud to be nominated as the next president of MCC,” said Fry. “It is a club that is known throughout the world for what it represents in the game and to be gifted the opportunity to perform this role is truly humbling.”

Based at Lord’s which it owns, MCC acts as custodian and arbiter of the laws and spirit of cricket.

Fry delivered the 20th MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture last year, becoming only the second non-cricketing figure after the late Archbishop Des-

SWAG Boss emerged winners when the inaugural Linden Mayor’s Cup One-Day Town Week dominoes tournament, which attracted nine teams, was played last Saturday at the Egbert Benjamin Conference Hall in Mackenzie, Linden.

Coming out on top were Swag Boss with 80 games, WHO with 72 and GJETSCO on 50.

Swag Boss captain, Arthur Chung, was the Most Valuable Player of the final with 17 games as Andre Ferdinand ended with 15.

Teams in this tournament, organised by Westwell Peters of the Big Landing Dominoes Club and who received sponsorship from the Linden Town Week Committee were recent Dewars Linden Town Week champions Bidders, Warriors, Rockets, CATS, Royal Champions, WHO, GJETSCO, Swag Boss and Big Landing.

The winners Swag Boss copped the first prize of $100 000 with second-placed WHO collecting $40 000 and GJETSCO $20 000 for placing third.

Trophies were donated by Snook’s Jewellery, Powers Brian Money and Life Time Gift Shop.

Mayor Mrs Waneka Arrindell who was present gave her blessings and wished all the teams well.

At the end of the event, prizes were presented by Mayor Arrindell and other councillors. She expressed joy and her hope that the tournament will be an annual event. (Joe Chapman)

SCCA Memorial Weekend softball festival set for May 28, 29 THE Schenectady Softball Cricket Association (SCCA) annual Memorial Weekend cricket festival is set for May 28 and 29, with teams from New York, Canada, Florida, New Jersey and the hosts battling for supremacy in the two-day extravaganza, a brainchild of Guyanese-born Onkar Singh.

Known more for his prowess as one of the top commentators in the softball arena, Singh told Chronicle Sport that his association is all set to stage the two-day affair at Central and Grout Parks in Schenectady.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners-up, as well as MVPs for each game, MVP of the tournament and members of teams in the final.

According to Singh, who has been at the helm of the SCCA since its inception some 17 years ago, after leaving Queens

during the regular season and currently one of the 20-over categories has started.

This year marks 22 years since the self-made commentator “accidental-

ly” ventured into a career which has since branded him as a cricket commentator with a difference.

Singh is not heard on radio or television but his on-the-spot coverage

Seattle’s victory secured a place for them at FIFA Club World Cup MAJOR League Soccer side Seattle Sounders beat Mexico’s Pumas UNAM to win the CONCACAF Champions League.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Mexico, Seattle won the home second leg 3-0 with two goals from Raul Ruidiaz and a late effort from Nicolas Lodeiro to claim a 5-2 aggregate win.

“There are no words to describe what I’m feeling right now,” Peru striker Ruidiaz told Fox Sports.

“The club made history and deserved it - now enjoy it.”

ENGLAND are hoping for a swift conclusion to their hunt for a new Test coach, with South African Gary Kirsten the leading contender as the deadline for applications expires.

The window for submissions officially closes at 6pm on Friday, but informal conversations have already been held and the field of candidates is unlikely to shift at the eleventh hour.

The England and Wales Cricket Board are interviewing for two positions on Monday and Tuesday after resolving to split the red-ball and white-ball roles, but time pressure is most significant on the Test team.

They are back in action on June 2 at Lord’s, where they begin a three-match series against New Zealand, and would like the incoming coach, as well as new captain Ben Stokes, to play an active role in squad selection before that.

Kirsten appears to be the man in pole position, as he was four years ago before being edged out by Chris Silverwood.

That experience suggests there is still plenty up for grabs during the interview stage, which will be led by

England drop to lowest Test points rating in 27 years

England lost 1-0 to West Indies in Joe Root’s last series as Test captain ENGLAND have dropped to sixth in the world Test rankings and now hold their lowest points total for 27 years.

England, who have won only one of their past

17 Tests and are winless in nine, have dropped a place below Pakistan.

Their points rating of 88, a calculation of their points scored divided by matches played across a

time period, is their lowest since 1995.

If former South Africa and India coach Kirsten does emerge successful in that race, an agreement would need to be reached over his role as batting coach with Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans.

They are currently top of the IPL table and on course to go all the way in a competition which runs until May 29 – just four days before England’s Test summer begins.

Extracting him from his longer-term commitments in future years should be simpler, while the ECB would also need to find a new coach for Welsh Fire in The Hundred. Having overlooked Kirsten for Silverwood, they successfully recruited him to front the Cardiff-based team in last year’s launch season.

World Cup berths at stake CWI decision to not name a T20I in CW U17 semifinals vice-captain surprises Wallace

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Two spots in the 2022 FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup in India will be at stake today in the semifinals of the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s (CW) Under-17 Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Both matches will be played at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, beginning with Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Mexico arrive at the semifinals after scoring 25 goals in their two knockout-round games, a 15-0 win over Guyana in the Round of 16, followed by a 10-0 quarter-final victory against Dominican Republic.

Tatiana Flores and Valerie Vargas have been the leaders of the Mexico attack with eight goals each and will be tasked with finding a way past a tough Puerto Rico defence.

FORMER West Indies batter, Philo Wallace, is surprised by the decision of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel to not name a vice-captain for the T20I team.

Trinidadian left-hander Nicholas Pooran was announced as the West Indies’ new T20 and ODI skipper on Tuesday following the retirement of former captain Kieron Pollard from international cricket last month.

Barbados batter Shai Hope was named the ODI vice-captain but there was no such announcement for the T20 format.

“Shai Hope is being designated as his deputy for the 50-over squad.

There’s no vice-captain for the T20 squad, which I find very interesting,” said Wallace while appearing on the Mason & Guest Radio Show in Barbados

Barbados batter Shai Hope was named the ODI vice-captain on Tuesday.

Missing international assignments has been a big problem for the West Indian players, who are involved in various T20 leagues around the world and Wallace hopes this doesn’t become an issue with the new Windies skipper.

“His first assignment is away to Holland and I

hope that we don’t hear that Pooran is going to miss a lot of international cricket after being elevated to this very serious post. I do hope that the selectors would’ve sat down with him via zoom and have a serious discussion with him about what they are expecting of him and what he’s expecting of himself and try to pick the best possible squads going forward,” he said.

“All I can say is I wish him all the very best and I do hope that he can help turn our cricket around and work closely with the players, selection panel and the coaches to try to lift the quality of our white ball cricket,” Wallace added.

DAVID Warner was in inspirational form as he spearheaded Delhi Capitals (DC) to a 21run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to boost their playoff hopes in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Warner issued a rallying cry to the Capitals’ top order on Wednesday with the franchise in danger of missing out on a spot in the next round.

Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ shirt sold for £7.14M (REUTERS) - The shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored two of the most famous goals in soccer history was sold for 7.14 million pounds ($8.93M) on Wednesday, marking a new auction record for an item of sports memorabilia.

Maradona wore Argentina’s No.10 shirt in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England in Mexico. Six minutes into the second half he put his team ahead by punching the ball into the net for what became known as the ‘Hand of God’ goal.

Four minutes later Maradona dribbled from his own half to score a goal, widely considered one of the greatest in World Cup history.

England midfielder Steve Hodge got Maradona’s jersey after the game and announced last month he was putting it up for auction after 19

years on display at England’s National Football Museum.

“This historic shirt is a tangible reminder of an important moment not only in the history of sports, but in the history of the 20th century,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables.

Sotheby’s said the buyer was anonymous.

The sale broke the previous record for sports memorabilia set by the original autograph manuscript of the Olympic Manifesto from 1892, which went for $8.8M in 2019.

The sale of Maradona’s jersey was complicated by claims that the wrong shirt was going under the hammer, with his daughter and ex-wife saying Hodge received the shirt Maradona wore in the first half of the match.
