Buxton community centre ground gets new basketball hoops, lawn mower

IN responding to youths’ immediate needs in Buxton and Friendship on

the East Coast of Demerara, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports,

Charles Ramson, delivered several brand-new basketball hoops, brush

The basketball hoops and other equipment that were delivered to the Buxton community centre ground

cutters and a lawn mower on Monday to enhance the community centre ground.

The delivery was made shortly after several youths and sports enthusiasts in the community voiced their concerns about the need for an improved community ground to host sporting activities. These concerns were raised during a cabinet outreach on Monday.

One resident explained that the community has just about 100 talented basketball players. However, their talents have been stifled since the centre ground lacks the facilities to accommodate their skills or host a decent basketball game.

In response, Minister Ramson delivered new basketball hoops to residents of the community. “I’m going to make a commitment. You are saying that you have a hundred players playing here and you don’t have any hoops…. today just to show that we mean business, I will give you that commitment that in within 30 minutes those hoops are going to be here.”

The residents welcomed the minister ’s commitment with loud applause and cheers.

He said the government is about action and

delivering its promises to the people.

By Tamica Garnett PRIME MINISTER, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips, on Monday, emphasised that there is much on the cards for the development of Buxton as he delivered remarks at a Cabinet outreach in Buxton/Friendship, East Coast Demerara.

Held at the Buxton Community Centre Ground, the packed-to-capacity outreach saw Cabinet Ministers interacting with the residents and making pledges to address issues raised, including repairs to roads, facilities, small business assistance, and work for contractors from the communities.

Many residents were delighted with how the over three-hour engagement played out.

“I think it was good. It was fruitful. A lot of promises were made, with some of it already delivered. I believe people feel their voices are being heard and that the Ministers here represent the government. People feel confident that their concerns were being addressed and that the government will look into it and get it sorted out,” resident Grace Williams shared in an interview

A mother of two, Williams said that she had been living in Buxton for over 30 years.

She shared that she was also happy with the turnout at the event and was glad to see her fellow Buxtonians come out to engage with the government.

“I am more than pleased.

I am more than overwhelmed with the response. I was here for a previous engagement with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Sports, and there were only a few people in attendance from the community. But this here shows that people are willing to listen and are willing to voice their concerns,” she related.

“It was very productive.

A lot of people got to express the way they feel, and express what was bothering them and they showed their concerns and I think it was something good that the government did.

Some of the concerns raised affect me, for instance, the road that’s a major concern, and I believe the Ministers responded to that okay,” she said.

Monday’s event was attended by several Ministers led by the Prime Minister, who, during his opening address, called for unity and togetherness to advance Guyana’s developmental agenda.

“Now is the time for development in Guyana and Buxton will not be left out.

When we talk about ‘One Guyana’ we’re talking about development for all the people of Guyana, wherever you are. This will happen in every village all over Guyana. We are going to go out and meet you in your community,” the Prime Minister said as he made opening remarks.

With revenues from Guyana’s oil and gas industry pouring in, Guyana is currently on a transformative, developmental trajectory, with several massive projects and programmes being executed across the country.

“Now is the time for us as a people with a resource that will give us the revenue that we never had before to bring development to all of Guyana. And this government has decided that we will transform Guyana together with that revenue. Let us be a focussed people. The PPP/C government from 1992 to

The Prime Minister noted how heartened he was by the volume of the turnout at the event, saying that it showed that Guyanese were willing to

In terms of other community infrastructure, Minister Edghill made a note of the roads in need of repair while noting that all the roads cannot be done immediately; he indicated that works could begin shortly on the highest priority road.

THOUSANDS of acres along the East Coast Demerara (ECD) corridor will soon be available for future allocation, Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal announced on Mon day, during a cabinet outreach in the communities of Buxton and Friendship ECD. While addressing land concerns from residents of the community and surrounding environs, the minister said that the allocations would commence

by August.

“We have thousands of acres that will be available for future allocations on the East Coast starting as early as next month,” Croal told the large gath-

ering.

He further explained to residents that the ministry has been working in a macro context to finalise lands for allocations across the country.

“It is not the case that we have not been allocating, but we have to do that in a macro context of achieving 50,000 as a government in these five years. We are currently finalising lands because we have to do this in conjunction with Guyana lands and survey as well as [Guyana Sugar Corporation] GuySuCo.” Minister Croal said many job opportunities would soon follow with available lands.

“In addition to that, when we look at housing, it would be remiss of me

to not look at the context of the job opportunities that come with housing.”

He said that, aside from the opportunities made through infrastructure, residents will also reap the benefits of industrial and commercial activities that are earmarked for the Enmore/Foulis community further along the East Coast Corridor.

“You also have the hub of industrial, commercial activities that will take place right within the Enmore/Foulis land area, that will see again thousands of job opportunities for persons from Buxton as well as on the East Coast,” he noted.

However, despite the backlog, Minister Croal said that the ministry, in under 18 months, has managed to make allocations to approximately 2600 persons on the East Coast Corridor.

Murder charge recommended for DeNobrega in Bacchus death - obstructing course of justice charge for two others

THE Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, has advised the police to proceed with charging Lance Corporal Kristoff DeNobrega for the fatal shooting of Quindon Bacchus last month.

In a letter sent on Monday, the DPP also advised that Lance Corporal Thurston Simon and Sergeant Dameion McLennon be charged for obstructing the course of justice in relation to the murder.

Simon is also expected to be charged with Conduct prejudice to good order and discipline, Contrary to Section 4(z) of the Police (Discipline) Act, Chapter 17:01.

Lance Corporal Kristoff DeNobrega Authority (PCA) Justice (Ret’d) William Ramlal, recommended charges against three members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in relation to the June 10, 2022, fatal shooting at Haslington New Scheme, East Coast

of Demerara.

DeNobrega, attached to the Police Special Branch, told investigators that he went undercover to arrest Bacchus, who was allegedly selling unlicensed firearms.

The father of one was shot multiple times allegedly by DeNobrega during a shootout.

The PCA investigated the matter in collaboration with the Office of Professional Responsibility to ensure a free, fair, and transparent finding.

Bacchus’s fatal shooting has had much public attention, with his family calling for justice and an independent probe.

“In order to put down these hoops they have to be casted into the ground, so within two weeks, our team at the ministry and your team of basketball players are going to work on a community project where we are going to install these hoops to-

The donation in Buxton formed part of the wider programme undertaken by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to upgrade and maintain community grounds across the country.

Just last Sunday, Minister Ramson assisted with the setting up of basketball backstops and hoops at Ithaca village, West Bank Berbice.

Changing Lives

THOSE who are alive today and who would have lived through the People’s National Congress’s (PNC) rule prior to 1992, can attest to the transformation of Guyana through the modernisation that occurred under the 23-year administration of the People’s Progressive Party /Civic (PPP/C).

Space will not allow listing the various projects and their positive impact on the lives of Guyanese.

However, a cursory look will reveal projects such as the Berbice River Bridge; new ferries; the National Stadium; the Arthur Chung Convention Centre; the University of Guyana Tain Campus; a plethora of hospitals, schools, road networks and untold interventions to improve the welfare of all Guyanese.

Along with that, the growth of the private sector and the establishment of numerous facilities including banks across the country, have led to increased convenience to conduct transactions. Importantly, the housing drive and construction boom under the PPP/C government is unprecedented and exemplary. It was not just the provision of a piece of land, but the creation of enabling environments, including those through financial institutions, to allow ordinary citizens to own homes.

In doing so, the empowerment and independence that come with home ownership is unimaginable. In turn, through the acquisition of collateral, opportunities were opened up for further advancement of individuals and families.

That in itself changed lives

in impacting ways for a large number of Guyanese, who, otherwise, may not have been able to own their homes. For many, if not all of those persons, it would have been dreams realised.

In examining the 23year period of the PPP/C government, between 1992-2015, the priority would have been the advancement of the lives of Guyanese whether through social or infrastructural interventions. With regard to the latter, none can dispute that the landscape has been transformed to the point of being unrecognisable by many, especially those who are overseas-based.

That unprecedented transformation saw many years of sustained economic growth and Guyana now being classified as a developing country from being a highly indebted

poor one in 1992.

During that 23-year period, Guyana was lauded as the shining light of the Caribbean. Those achievements were not coincidental, but precipitated from prudent and visionary leadership, driven by commitment to improve the lives of all Guyanese.

By creating the environment to allow ordinary Guyanese to not only own homes, but also vehicles, machinery and other necessary equipment for growth and development, the PPP/C government has ensured a pathway out of poverty for many. In doing so, thousands of lives have been changed for the better. Sadly, this trajectory changed and progress regressed during the APNU+AFC rule from 2015-2020.

In some way, it seems

as if history repeated itself in the context of what transpired in 1992 and then in 2020; rebuilding was vital on both occasions following economic ruin and mismanagement by the APNU+AFC and its previous manifestations.

Currently, and just within a year, the PPP/C government continues to rapidly move the country along a trajectory of prosperity, bringing the nation on the cusp of further transformative development that would eventually see inherent potential being realised.

With that on the verge of being unlocked, the dreams of many other Guyanese are also coming to reality. Over the last few months, a number of persons were the recipient of house lots. The number allotted within the year is staggering when compared

to the entire five-year tenure of the APNU+AFC government. Importantly, the distribution is not confined to one particular area, but includes a spread of communities of all ethnicities.

As these persons now move forward to construct their own homes, on another front, thousands of Guyanese are receiving online scholarships with the direct intent of building human capacity for both personal advancement and to meet the growing demands of the country in this transformative phase.

This is vital to our development as a nation, and the ability to change lives for the better has been proven to be an identifiable trait of the PPP/C government-a stark contrast to the APNU+AFC.

Hate begets hate and this must end Dear Editor, WHAT did the people of Mon Repos have to do with the death of Quindon Bacchus? This was not justice. The attacking and looting of the innocent and their businesses were completely unrelated to the death of Mr Bacchus, and will only cause more chaos.

This onslaught was reminiscent of the mayhem that occurred in our country in 1992, 1997, 2001 and in Cotton Tree in 2020. What happened then was no different than what happened in Mon Repos. Make no mistake, the attack on the Indiandominated community of Mon Repos was an ethnic

one.

And like the past occurrences mentioned, I have no doubt that rogue elements, including political ones, hijacked the protest, resulting in the assault on the people of Mon Repos. I don’t need to call names. The people of Guyana are intelligent enough to deduce. This is

a tale we have heard far too many times.

All this will do is rip apart the social fabric of our country and widen the divide even more.

So-called news outlets spreading misleading information must be called out and held accountable.

We must also not allow chaos to be incited by

known mischief makers, at home or in the diaspora. We must not allow these “wild men” to poison our society any further. How can we achieve our “One Guyana” when we let fringe elements pit us like animals?

Moreover, we must desist from all racial remarks and other hateful

rhetoric on social media platforms such as Facebook. This encompasses racial remarks directed towards both Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese. Hate begets hate and this must end. We must not descend to basal instincts, not in 2022.

Need for brand-new approaches to age-old regional problems

Part 3: CARICOM Can Be The World’s Next Net-Food-Exporting Region!

By Earl Bousquet I’VE been attending and covering CARICOM summits for as long as I’ve been writing since 1976, and as always, I set out this year to follow the opening ceremony in Paramaribo last Sunday evening.

Annual summits tend to have recurring agenda items and this the 43rd in CARICOM’s 49th year is no different, except the context in which it is taking place has long forced the leaders to give the most urgent

attention ever, to how global developments outside the region continue to result in the most serious and worsening, ongoing and spiralling problems of the past two decades -- from 9/11 in New York and the US 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, through to Climate Change, COVID, Supply Chain Disruptions, the Ukraine war and the resulting skyrocketing effects on food and fuel prices, threatening regional food security like never before.

Guyana was congratulated Sunday night in Suriname for

its sterling leadership of CARICOM’s regional agriculture portfolio, significantly since COVID and Ukraine, setting new stages for the region to seriously and urgently cut its US $5 Billion+ food-import bill by 25% by 2025.

Now halfway through the 25x25 time period, Guyana’s President, Dr Irfaan Ali, has assured the region and the world that his nation will continue to provide the leadership it is being credited for.

But unlike pre-COVID sum-

ON Monday, America celebrates its 246th anniversary since declaring independence from England on July 4, 1776.

It is a national holiday, an extended holiday weekend.

The Guyanese diaspora in the USA observes and celebrates the occasion by participating in flag hoisting and other patriotic activities, parades, and barbecues and other traditional festivities.

Many use it for travels, patronising public parks, fishing, playing cricket and other sports, and sightseeing. Some trav-

elled to Canada for its national day last Friday, while some families planned weddings for convenience as it is an extended weekend.

Many Guyanese-owned homes have American flags fluttering in the winds, while others have the Guyana flag and jhandi flags flying in front of their homes, showcasing their multiple identities.

It is traditional to have picnics and barbecues during the extended weekend. And many Guyanese were seen in the parks and their yards barbecuing.

Guyanese are extremely grateful for the opportunity to make the USA their home.

They have used their presence to improve their lot and to make significant contributions to their former homeland.

They are immersing themselves in the American culture and adding theirs to it. In so doing, they bring the two nations closer. They are also grateful to America for saving democracy in their former homeland.

mits when leaders were accused every year of participating in regional ‘talk shops,’ coming just-over four months after Ukraine and with more than four times the worries posed by the fiscal challenges that have accumulated over two decades and have simply pierced the region’s sky, the 2022 Paramaribo summit has forced most leaders to accept they simply have to look beyond national and regional boundaries and borders in the search for the new solutions to old problems that continue returning and the new ones that bore deeper holes in people’s pockets and bank accounts, making food, fuel, public transportation prices simply unaffordable for many more in many more places everywhere.

Even with the time to accelerate efforts to achieve the 25x25 target, individual member-states still suffer shortages of essential food supplies produced regionally, as in Saint Lucia, where a sugar-import crisis has lingered for weeks, and where the Philip J. Pierre administration’s Cabinet met on how to shield consumers from the astronomical prices for bread.

Unfortunately, in these times of extreme crises facing average consumers, many private sector supermarkets, community grocers and household

shops take legal advantage of the absence of discouragement by private sector bodies to engage in price-gouging practices, ranging from hoarding to conditional coupling of the scarce item with purchase of others. Indeed, I was appalled when told last week that the only guaranteed way I could get my usual five pounds of sugar would be to buy a full 100-pound sack.

As President Dr Irfaan Ali pointed out in his CARICOM Day message, the second-half of the ongoing 25x25 plan will require cooperation like never before, between private and public sector agricultural agencies, including all already involved in agricultural and agro-industrial production and the new innovative agri-businesses mushrooming across the region, as seen in the various components of the Agri Forum and Expo hosted by Guyana in mid-May. But while agriculture and food security are acknowledged to be in good hands, today’s

challenges have also forced today’s regional leaders to look beyond normal borders and boundaries -- The Bahamas’ leader visioning a ‘CARICOM Federation,’ the Suriname President envisioning ‘a CARICOM Cricket team,’ the Saint Lucia Prime Minister calling for (effectively) making LIAT ‘a CARICOM Airline’ and confirming the island will be joining the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ); the new Grenada leader signalling his intent to significantly upgrade the ward islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in the new list of national priorities of the three-island state under his watch, and Suriname appealing to colleagues to make its Youth Development portfolio successful over the next year, in a region where 75% of citizens are not yet 31.

No ordinary irrigation in the Gambia - innovative solar-powered technologies are securing access to water for rural communities

(FAO) ACROSS many parts of rural Gambia, women farmers often start their day before dawn to ensure that they have enough water to irrigate their gardens and to cook, clean and bathe at home.

“Some of us would wake up as early as 3.00 a.m. to 4.00 a.m. just to get water. Hyenas attacked us on three different occasions,” said Salla Bah, a vegetable farmer in the Central River Region in the north of the Gambia.

Bah added: “We had to endure all these challenges to be able to water

our crops and find time for chores at home.”

Like most residents in her village, Salla depends on one of three deep water wells in her village. You can never be too early, and arriving at the wrong time could cost you an entire morning and the day’s wages. The vegetable farms are vital sources of income, allowing the community members to support their households with food and income.

In collaboration with the Gambian Ministry of Agriculture, FAO started an initiative in 2013 funded by the European Union and

the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to provide boreholes for water-deprived community gardens.

However, these are no ordinary boreholes; they are equipped with solar-powered pumps that fill reservoirs kitted with filtration systems, providing clean water for irrigation and, critically, for household use and livestock.

FAO has implemented 34 solar-powered water systems to irrigate community vegetable gardens and provide livestock watering points in villages all over the Gambia. This is creating a greener future

FAO is championing solar-powered innovations across the continent and beyond, ensuring that these technologies are owned and maintainted by the local communities who utilise them (FAO/ David Kujabi) for over 6,600 community members, 90 per cent of whom are women. There are an additional ten solarpowered water systems for livestock that are in advanced construction in the northern part of the River Gambia, where there is severe land degradation and deforestation.

“Before the installation of the solar systems and boreholes, we always had water challenges. Now that is in the past,” said Foday Jadama, a farmer in the community.

She added: “We now have water in abundance to grow anything we desire.”

SUPPORTING CLIMATE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION With the effects of climate change ever present, water access is increasingly critical to the survival of communities in the Gambia’s arid rural areas.

“Aside from the economic benefits, this project is also very important when it comes to climate change,” said Dodou Trawally, the national focal person for the GEF in the Gambia.

“Managing the effects of climate change is about two things,” he continued. “It is about mitigation and adaptation. This solarpowered system addresses both, hence its importance and significance to the Gambia.”

With the off-grid systems irrigating the land, farmers such as Salla and

Foday, are leading the charge in climate adaptation, setting an example of how green solutions can be a building block in climate action.

OWNERSHIP EQUALS SUSTAINABILITY The local communities are taking pride in these solar-powered systems.

They have a sense of ownership and are partners in the systems’ development and maintenance.

Community members also contribute a small monthly amount to support the system financially, a stipulation implemented through the community’s by-laws.

“I am responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the solar panels,” Jalamang Touray said proudly. “With the help of two women, we clean the solar panels every Friday.”

While other men predominantly work with millet or cowpea farming, Jalamang works on the vegetable garden with the women and youth. Together they tend to the five-hectare, GEF-funded vegetable garden. Jalamang received training on fixing basic faults in the system, cleaning the solar panels regularly and monitoring the water flow into the overhead galvanized water storage tank.

By involving community members in the conception, planning, execution and maintenance of the project facilities,

the people of Kuwonkuba village and 33 other communities across the country have developed self-sufficent and resilient livelihoods. They can provide for themselves and their children and experience a level of comfort they had previously never known. Now, most of the women who previously made no more than US$18 (GMD 1,000) from each four-month farming period make about US$143 (GMD 7,800).

“The system has enabled us to financially take care of our children and health, pay school fees and look after other needs,” says Awa Mbenga of Jamali Ganyado village, standing in front of her garden with a smile. “Since we got the solar-powered water, we have time to stay at home, eat and drink tea before heading to the gardens.”

Twenty-one officers were promoted to Superintendents of Police, 25 to Deputy Superintendents, while 42 were promoted to Assistant Superintendents of Police.

A list of 21 were promoted to Assistant Superintendents on Probation, four to Cadet officers, six to Chief Inspectors, and 97 were promoted to Inspectors of Police.

In the junior police promotions lists, 104, were promoted to Regular Sergeant, 109 to Corporal and 85 to Lance Corporal. The GPF is currently observing its 183rd Anniversary.

Region Two beautification process commences - Regional Chairperson

REGION Two Chairperson, Vilma De Silva, said that the Regional Administration, in collaboration with the Anna Regina Town Council, is focusing on enhancing the Township by cleaning and clearing all drainage systems.

She said that there is currently a massive cleanup campaign in the town of Anna Regina.

Workers are currently involved in clearing garbage, cutting tall bush, and removing debris and derelict items around the community.

She said the move was in keeping with President Irfaan Ali’s vision to keep Guyana clean.

The Regional Chairperson noted that the beauti-

fication process has commenced from the Township and will move to various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC).

“All the garbage, the waste bottles, I will work along with the Anna Regina Town Council, and I will do spot checks, and anyone found dumping garbage will face the consequences, and actions will be taken against them,” De Silva said.

She added that currently, a machine is in the area cleaning the clogged drains.

Envisioning and ensuring that Region Two remains clean and pristine, De Silva said the Region focuses on tourism, and the surroundings must remain clean and safe for visitors.

CANU intercepts boat with $11M in ‘ganja’, three arrested THREE suspects are in custody following the discovery of a wooden boat at Number 66 village, Corentyne Berbice, on Sunday, with $11M worth of cannabis onboard.

According to the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), its ranks were conducting a maritime operation in Canje Creek, when they discovered a speed boat containing several bulky garbage bags with cannabis.

At the time, the boat was docked at the pump station that drains the Number 66 village Canal.

The three individuals found in the vicinity of the boat were arrested.

“The individuals, along with the suspected narcotics and speed boat were escorted to CANU headquarters. The suspected narcotics tested positive for cannabis, weighing a total of 41.8kilograms, and a street value of approximately GUY $11 million,” CANU stated in a press release.

The investigation is ongoing.

The operation was part of CANU’s efforts to reduce narcotics trafficking in the Berbice district.

Returns from VAT, excise taxes decline by 10.2 per cent

- with tax reforms instituted to cushion rising cost of living REVENUE generated from valued added tax (VAT) and excise taxes has decreased by 10.2 per cent, owing to measures instituted by the government to cushion rising cost of living caused by global economic challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and, more recently, the war in Ukraine.

In its report on the first quarter of 2022, the Bank of Guyana (BoG) said that receipts from VAT and excise taxes declined by 10.2 per cent to $22.7 billion and other taxable revenues decreased by 16.2 per cent to just over $2 billion due to tax reforms.

The tax reforms referred to by the Central Bank form part of the government’s wider agenda to improve the quality of life in Guyana and address immediate economic challenges that affect Guyanese.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in addressing the issue of rising cost of living, had said that his government was “aggressively” tackling the issue and examining the best approaches.

Specific to tax reforms, the government, since being elected to office in 2020, has removed VAT from water, electricity, building and construction materials, basic food items and household necessities.

Additionally, stakeholders in the mining industry have benefitted from a menu of relief measures valuing roughly $1.9 billion. Among those measures were the removal of the 10 per cent tributors tax, the reduction of the final tax from 3.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent and the removal of VAT

on lubricating oils. The government has also cut excise tax on fuel in light of rising fuel prices.

Outside of tax reforms, there has also been a constant increase in old-age pension and public assistance.

Additionally, the government reinstated the “Because we Care” cash grant and school uniform cash grant which stand at $30,000 per child in both public and private schools. This is in addition to billions of dollars that were disbursed through targetted cash-grant initiatives.

Guyanese could expect even more benefits as the year progresses, with plans in place to inject some $552.9 billion into the economy through various initiatives that would rapidly transform and modernise the nation.

This sum, which constitutes the government’s fiscal plan for this year, is some 44.3 per cent larger than Budget 2021 and 36.6 per cent above total expenditure last year, according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, during his presentation of Budget 2022 to the National Assembly, in January.

“Even as we confront, head on, the formidable challenges before us, our government continues to work in earnest to advance the aggressive agenda for transformation that we had previously outlined. At this moment of unprecedented opportunity for our country, we seek now to convert the bright prospects before us into realised national and individual well-being for all Guyanese.

Woman nabbed with ecstasy pills A 38-year-old woman is currently in custody after she was allegedly ‘busted’ with 168 ecstasy pills at her Line Path Section E, Skeldon Corentyne Berbice house.

Keisha Angel was arrested on July 1, 2022, during a joint operation between the Customs AntiNarcotics Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Brilliant England eye sensational win over India at Edgbaston … Root & Bairstow leading chase for hosts ENGLAND are closing in on a sensational win over India in the fifth Test after a riveting fourth day at Edgbaston.

Set a target of 378 - an England record - the home side thrillingly moved to 259-3, needing 119 more on the final day.

In an electric period in the afternoon, openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley shared a century stand in 19.5 overs, the fastest England have ever reached 100 without loss.

India fought back with three wickets for two runs either side of tea, only for Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to pick up the pursuit with an unbroken partnership of 150.

Root ended the day on 76 not out and Bairstow, who could have been caught twice, was unbeaten on 72.

It leaves the prospect of a classic finish in front of a capacity crowd on Tuesday, after the free tickets made available were snapped up in little more than an hour.

Earlier on Monday, India carelessly lost their last six wickets for 55 runs to be bowled out for 245.

Cheteshwar Pujara was out for 66 and Rishabh Pant 57 before England captain Ben Stokes ran through the lower order for 4-33.

India are 2-1 up and looking for their first series win in England since 2007, with this final Test held over from last year after it was postponed in

England believe at electric Edgbaston Even by the standards of what England achieved in their 3-0 series win against New Zealand, it would be utterly remarkable if they were to complete this run chase - the ninth-largest in the history of Test cricket.

And yet, the confidence seeping out of the England dressing merged with the optimism of an expectant crowd to create a tidal wave of belief in Birmingham.

Region One added to GFF-Thunderbolt Flour Power U-17 League WHEN the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Thunderbolt Flour Power National Under-17 League 2022 kicks off in just over a week, the foundation for the further development and exposure of youths will be further strengthened.

Details of the longest strategic partnership between the GFF and a corporate entity were unveiled between the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) and the Federation on Saturday at the National Training Centre when GFF President, Wayne Forde and Finance Controller of NAMILCO Fitzroy McLeod updated the media on plans for this year’s Intra-Association Leagues.

GFF president Wayne Forde announced that Region One (Barima-Waini), where work is actively going on to make the 10th Regional Association, would be added for the first time, noting that it would be a historic achievement.

In his feature remarks, McLeod posited that this is the continuation of the company’s commitment towards the empowerment of youth through sports and their deliberate effort to contribute positively to the Guyanese society.

to make this opportunity worth the while.

“We certainly are buoyed by the experiences that we’ve had in the past. So, we look forward to continued success and continued growth. On behalf of the management and staff, we certainly ask that you youngsters, in who we’re making this investment, you not only work hard and acquit yourselves of these opportunities, but you will also conduct yourselves in a way that brings credit to the tournament, to the teams, and to your communities,” McLeod said.

President Forde, in complimenting NAMILCO for its commitment to football development, gave some back-

ground to the partnership.

He mentioned the likes of national players Jeremy Garnett, Omari Glasgow, who has signed a two-year contract with Chicago Fire in the MLS, Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett, and many others, are products of NAMILCO’s investment.

“When my executive came into office in late 2015, we engaged with the Managing Director Mr. Bert Sukhai, Finance Controller Mr. Fitzroy McLeod, and Head Engineer Ralph Hemsing at NAMILCO, and we shared with them the direction that we wanted to take Guyana’s football,” Forde recalled.

GCB issues guidelines for fans attending WI/ Bangladesh matches at Providence THE Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has issued guidelines fans will have to follow for the Guyana leg of the West Indies/ Bangladesh series, commencing this week at the National Stadium, Providence.

In a statement, the Board announced the list of prohibited items, while highlighting that tickets are now on sale at its Regent Street office, in addition to being sold online.

Below is the full statement The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) will be hosting four international cricket matches between the West Indies and Bangladesh on behalf of Cricket West Indies (CWI) in July 2022.

Both teams will showcase a number of talented players and all matches will be played at the fast-drying Guyana National Stadium,

Providence.

This will allow patrons an opportunity to see the final T20 series match from 13:30h on Thursday July 7 and three One-Day International matches (ODI) on Sunday July 10, Wednesday July 13 and Saturday July 16. All ODI matches commence at 09:30h.

Spectators are encouraged to attend the matches and to support government’s intent to drive a sport tourism culture.

The two competitive teams are expected to light up Providence with the usual cricket carnival atmosphere, which will be complemented by fascinating music.

Restrictions Patrons are expected to adhere to the health, safety and prohibited guidelines.

Additional restricted items also include collapsible personal umbrellas,

where large umbrellas are not permitted.

Coolers (12x12x12 inches) will be allowed, subject to checks prior to entrance into the stadium.

Children in school uniform will be admitted with a free ticket at the venue, while citizens, 60 years and older, will also get a free ticket, but they must present a valid form of ID at the venue.

CWI women’s Under-19 Rising Stars T20 bowls off today PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – THE region’s best Under-19 women’s cricketers will assemble in Trinidad for the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s U19s Rising Stars T20 Championship, with matches being played from today to July 13 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA) and the Diego Martin Sporting Complex (DMSC).

The six regional franchise teams will be participating, as well as the United States of America Women’s U19 team.

At the end of the tournament, a West Indies Women’s U19 Rising Stars squad will be selected for a proposed international U19 series against the United States in Lauderhill, Florida in early August. Additionally, players will be looking to put in strong performances in order to be considered for selection for the inaugural ICC Women’s U19 World Cup in South Africa, scheduled for January 2023.

Several of the franchise squads feature players who have had experience at the senior regional or international level. Trishan Holder and Naijanni Cumberbatch recently competed for Barbados in the T20 Blaze and CG United Super50 Cup, as well as Ashmini Munisar for Guyana and Djenaba Joseph for Trinidad & Tobago.

The Windward Islands are in a unique position as two of their players have been part of the West Indies Women’s Senior team and A teams in the past year.

Jannellia Glasgow was a travelling reserve with the team to South Africa and the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, while skipper Zaida James was a member of the West Indies Women’s A Team that hosted Pakistan Women’s A team in 2021.

Sampson, Wong and Khan excel at Intermediate Bodybuilding Championships THREE of the country’s rising bodybuilding stars, Michael Sampson, Aliya Wong and Yusuf Khan outflexed their opponents en route to the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GBBFF) Intermediate Bodybuilding and Mr Berbice Championships, which was held in the Ancient County over the weekend.

At the Berbice High School auditorium, the trio who won the novice titles at the 2021 Novice Bodybuilding Championships in Linden again won the bodybuilding Ms Bikini and Mr Physique titles respectively.

All three also improved in confidence and showmanship.

CWI lauds Sir Viv after CARICOM recognition

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, (CMC) – Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Monday praised the iconic Sir Vivian Richards for helping the region “establish new levels of greatness”, after the former West Indies captain was presented with the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC).

Sir Vivian, the only West Indies captain never to have lost a Test series, presided over one of the halcyon periods for the Caribbean side during the 1980s, while also carving his name into history as perhaps the most dominant batsmen of his era.

Chanderpaul brings some coaching experience with him - he has served as the batting consultant of the West Indies U19 side and is currently the head coach of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL. "I am excited to have been appointed as the Head Coach of the USA National Women's Team and Women's Under 19 Team.

The Women's game is something I am a huge advocate of, and I have followed the progress of the USA Women's National team with keen interest," Chanderpaul said following his appointment.

"I've enjoyed being involved in American cricket over the years as a resident of Orlando, so to be given this opportunity to become the Head Coach for USA Cricket is an incredible one. I'm really looking forward to using my 20+ years of international cricket and my recent coaching experiences, to help the women's teams progress to World Cups in years to come, particularly the inaugural Under 19 Cricket World Cup in January."

Another stated the "disgusting racism" faced was "some of the worst abuse we've ever experienced at a match".

Edgbaston officials apologised and said they would investigate the matter as soon as possible.

They said in a tweet: "We're incredible sorry to read this and do not condone this behaviour in any way."

The England and Wales Cricket Board said: "We are very concerned to hear reports of racist abuse at today's Test match.

"We are in contact with colleagues at Edgbaston who will investigate. There is no place for racism in cricket."

An India fan identifying herself as Reena said: "Had an amazing three days watching Test cricket with some brilliant fans from both teams but today ruined the whole experience.
