Massive turnout of women-owned businesses at ‘We Lift 2’

DESPITE initially targeting 120 booths, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security (MoHSSS) had no other choice but to increase the number due to the overwhelming response at its “We Lift 2” one -day women business exhibition which was held on Saturday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).

Over 150 businesses participated in the event which was held in observance of International Women’s Day (IWD), which will be celebrated across the world on March 8. This year, IWD is being celebrated under the theme “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” with the trending hashtag #BreakingtheBias.

Most of the booths were managed by young women,

many under 30 years old, or even in their teens as was the case with 14-year-old artist Jhanvi Singh, who was on site selling her paintings.

During an interview with the Sunday Chronicle, Singh shared that she took up painting some two years ago due to being home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her stunning paintings have caught so much attention that she eventually turned it into a business. She decided to be part of ‘We Lift 2’ to market her products even more.

Her paintings on display included several eye catching abstract pieces created using the Dutch pour method, as well as animal paintings and a few embroidery pieces.

“The big paintings are blue and white which I used the sea and sky as my inspiration. I’m really into art called the Dutch pour, where you use liquid paints and a blow

dryer to create the pieces,” she shared.

Located right next to Singh was a booth by “Pinch Arts” which is owned by artist, 40-year-old Christina Parson, who also had some of her own pieces on display.

Her business also retails in quality art supplies, conducts art classes and ‘sip and paint’ sessions.

Excited to market their business, expand their client base and sell as much products as they could, the female entrepreneurs and proprietors were creative in decorating their respective booths and even offer support to each other as they strived to achieve their goals.

Some of the businesses were able to sell out their products while others were impressed with the attention and exposure they were able to garner from the event.

Thanks to the expo, she has now widened her customer base.

“The task to prepare was very tiring but the accomplishment feels amazing. I love being a part of the expo.

I met new customers who enjoyed my stuff so much they just came back for more and that actually led to me becoming sold out. So I’m so elated that I got the opportunity to come,” she shared.

Akeela launched business in 2019 when she was trying to raise money for her wedding and to purchase her

home and after it proved to be a success, she decided to keep at it.

“It just flourished so I continued it. I do donuts, chicken puffs, all of your savory and sweet items, I do them. I even try to invent some of my own things like cheesecake donuts or strawberry Oreos and those have really been a hit in Guyana,” she shared.

Several agencies that offer support services were also be present at the event including the Centre for Local Business Development (CLBD), and the Ministry of Labour (MoL) Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA), which assists persons in finding a job.

Starting off at 14:00

hours, the event commenced with an opening ceremony that featured a fashion show displaying 40 pieces by local female designers, and a display of “women breaking barriers,” which included a poetry performance by Guyana Talent Search Competition winner Quanisha Patterson, and a rap piece by young Parvanie Chaitram, who goes by the stage name ‘Rihanna’.

Guyana has US$1B in untapped bauxite potential -President Ali says

By Rehana Ahamad DESPITE past challenges, Guyana’s bauxite industry is poised to make a notable ‘comeback’, thanks to its substantial amounts of minerals yet to be extracted.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in his commemorative message for Guyana’s 52nd Republic Anniversary, estimated that the country’s bauxite reserves, alone, are worth close to US$1 billion.

He’d previously indicated that bauxite deposits along the Corentyne River, alone, can kickstart massive growth and development in Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne).

The Head of State reasons that with government’s efforts to reduce the cost of electricity, the establishment of a smelter factory would not only be possible, but financially viable as well.

Simply put, smelting is a process which uses heat and a chemical-reducing agent to decompose the ore, thereby driving off other elements as gasses, or slag, and leaving just the metal behind.

Even further, President Ali pointed to the fact that a smelter operation would also present the need for an aluminium plant, which would convert the extracted bauxite into aluminium.

Although Guyana has been producing top-tier bauxite for decades, it is yet to become a notable aluminium producer; however, this could soon change, as the government pushes ahead to imple-

ment a comprehensive energy mix, using ‘renewables’ such as wind, solar, ‘hydro’ and natural gases to produce alternative energy, thereby making manufacturing investments feasible across a myriad of sectors.

President Ali had also hinted at the fact that aluminium production could be further supported by the establishment of an energy corridor, stretching along the Corentyne, and neighbouring Suriname and Brazil, respectively.

It was also reported that, currently, investors are eyeing Tarakuli bauxite deposits near Orealla, in Region Six. As a matter of fact, according to the government’s Department of Public Information (DPI), Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat has already gone ahead to engage those parties who may be interested in developing the Tarakuli bauxite mine located some 10 miles away from Orealla.

The Department quoted Minister Bharrat as saying that ‘Tarakuli’ is one of the largest such bauxite mines remaining in our country, and that it is yet untouched.

‘VERY HIGH QUALITY’ Not only that, the bauxite contained at that location is said to be “of very high quality,” based on a previous study alluded to by Minister Bharrat.

As such, this serves as yet another reason for the establishment of an aluminium plant.

“The aluminium plant

President Dr. Irfaan Ali will add value to our ore, because, for too long we have been exporting raw materials; we haven’t been exporting value-added products, and you would know when you export value-added products, you earn maybe ten times more than when you export the raw material,” the minister said, emphasising the fact that the government’s priority is adding value to its many products.

In the meantime, output in the bauxite mining subsector has declined by some 3.8 per cent, according to Senior Minister in Office of the President with responsibility for Finance Dr. Ashni Singh.

Last month, in his presentation of the administration’s $552.9 billion ‘oil budget,’ Dr. Singh said that the decline in bauxite production is linked to the unprecedented floods that affected Guyana during the May-June rains in 2021.

sands of homes and farmlands being destroyed, while a number of mining operations were completely submerged, or, in some cases, washed away.

“In the latter half of the year, along with the effects of the continuous rainfall on the condition of access roads, and on mining operations, one of the large operators faced mechanical issues with some of its machinery, thereby resulting in output falling by an estimated 12.7 per cent below its 2020 performance,” Dr. Singh reported.

The minister explained, too, that in addition to the natural disaster, the decline in the bauxite industry was fuelled by the loss of one major producer in 2020, “as a result of the hostile investment environment at the time.” As he observed: “…bauxite mining continued with only two major operators.”

EXPECTED TO RECOVER

But despite the destruction, the minister said that bauxite production is expected to recover in 2022, with a projected growth of 25.4 per cent.

Already, Dr. Singh said, the larger of the two bauxite miners in Linden has initiated plans to expand investment in 2022. The company at reference, which Minister Singh did not name, is reportedly looking to plug a massive US$16 million capital investment into the industry.

“These include the construction of a third kiln, and procurement of other heavyduty equipment to improve the scale and efficiency of their mining operations,” Dr. Singh said.

“This third kiln is rated to have a throughput of 650 tonnes of bauxite per day, and will increase the plant’s installed production capacity by 65 per cent, with operation expected to begin in the latter half of 2022,” he added.

Minister Singh said, definitively, that beyond oil and gas, other extractives such as gold, bauxite, sand, stone, and other minerals will be major contributors to Guyana’s economy, going forward.

“Our government recognises the critical role of the mining sector in the economy, and will continue to invest in, and promote, the expansion of the sector, remaining mindful of the challenges and vulnerabilities, as illustrated during the 2021 floods, when operating sites and access roads were inundated, and rendered impassable for an extended time,” Dr. Singh noted.

Meanwhile, in its entirety, the mining and quarrying sector is forecast to grow by 86 per cent in 2022, driven by expansion across all subsectors, namely petroleum, gold and bauxite, along with other mining and quarrying.

reduced by 16 per cent and Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton, has attributed this to the increased awareness being

placed on occupational safety and health, and the efforts made to offer improved technical training to safety officers at

the ministry.

Minister Hamilton made the disclosure while delivering remarks during a graduation cer-

emony held on Thursday last for 14 persons from various agencies who completed an International Certificate in Mine Safety Operations course done by the ministry in collaboration with the Global People Services and Management Consultant Incorporated (GPSM).

Of the 14 participants, eight were from the ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department, two from gold-mining company Aurora Gold Mines (AGM) Incorporated, and one each from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The participants completed more than 16 modules in mine safety, and areas covered included hazard control, safety, firefighting, electrical safety, and accident investigation,

among others In his address, Minister Hamilton applauded the efforts made to offer the highest level of technical training to OSH officers, pointing out that even more training is in store as the ministry continues to strengthen its ability to monitor OSH at work places in Guyana, particularly those in the oil-and-gas industry.

“Very soon, two officers from Labour and two from the OSH Department of the ministry will be leaving for Trinidad to be trained in the TBOSIET programme, enabling them to visit and conduct inspections on the Floating Production Storage and Offloading [vessels] (FPSO) at sea,” Hamilton noted.

There are presently eight senior OSH officers qualified to train persons in the mines.

“We have to make sure that we are very conscious of what needs to happen in all of our spaces across the world so that one day gender equality will not be a dream, gender equality will be reality,” Dr. Persaud charged.

Finance Ministry denounces continued misinformation campaign against Amaila Falls project

THE Ministry of Finance has debunked information in a banner carried on the front page of Saturday’s Kaieteur News indicating that the Amaila Falls power plant will not supply electricity to Essequibo and Berbice.

“This statement, once again and much like many other statements coming out of this media house recently, is simply not true.

“Amaila will supply electricity through Sophia to the national grid for distribution. This will include Berbice which is already connected through the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS). Additionally, even in advance of Amaila, the government is already working to deliver approximately 10 megawatts of peak solar power to be delivered directly to

Regions Five and Six,” a statement from the ministry noted on Saturday.

According to the Finance Ministry, the government is already working on a project to deliver eight megawatts of solar

power to Essequibo.

“Furthermore, the master plan for the electricity sector includes linking isolated Essequibo systems with the DBIS by 2026.

“The banner carried

by [Kaieteur News] represents just the latest in this tabloid’s continued anti-development campaign based on untruths and inaccuracies and should be denounced and rejected fully.”

Gov’t to create labour office at Mabarauma OFFICIALS from the Ministry of Labour (MoL), on Tuesday last, began discussions with officials from the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region One (Barima-Waini) for the creation of a labour office and placement of Labour and Occupational Safety and Health Officers in Mabaruma.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton lead the team which included Chairman of the National Council on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH), Earl Morris; Occupational Safety and Health Consultant, Gweneth King of the Board of Industrial Training (BIT); Senior Technical Officer, Bevon Shepherd and other officials.

The discussions were held with Regional Chair-

man Bretnol Ashley and included the commencement of field assessments.

Minister Hamilton noted that though there is already a labour and OSH officer stationed at Port Kaituma in Region One, the ministry is looking to have an office in each major district of the same region.

Though the initial goal is to start with labour and OSH officers, the ministry hopes to have officers from each of its various major departments, which would also include the Co-operatives Department, Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA) and BIT. The minister also discussed training development needed for residents of Mabaruma, Port Kaituma, and Mathew’s Ridge, to fill the unemployment gap in the region.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton Through the BIT, more than 11 young men who have completed training in heavy duty equipment operation and welding and fabrication were interviewed and given employement in Mabaruma and Mathew’s Ridge.

The team also visited Guyana Manganese Incorporated (GMI) to address labor related matters.

Civil Society

CIVIL society has an important role to play in the governance processes of the country. It is made up of individuals, groups and organisations who are expected to work in collaboration with the government to promote the interests of the broader society, but operate outside of the government. Civil society organisations are expected to promote the national good, and as such, should not be motivated by profit or favours from government.

The PPP/C administration has always recognised civil society as a way of involving people in the governance process.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, however, recently had cause to respond to some unfounded claims made by a ’civil society’ grouping which accused the government of ‘being out of control’ and ‘lacking transparency and accountability.’

These allegations are not only baseless but politically motivated, which run counter to the norms and expectations of any responsible civil society organisation which has the public interest in mind.

According to President Ali, the allegations are ridiculous, unfounded, baseless and politically motivated. He emphasised the point that every single project his administration is pursuing is in the public domain and for the most part is approved by Parliament and can withstand public scrutiny.

“We have established a clear vision for the transformation of our country, we have established a clear vision for the economic development of our country, but it is clear that there are some organisations that are convenient with the truth and are political in nature and they cannot help themselves and their political bias and I do not have an issue

if these organisations have a political bias or a political agenda, but they must not hide under the cloak of independence,” he said.

Sadly, there are some people in our society who are so prejudiced that they cannot see any good project implemented by the PPP/C administration. They would find fault in almost everything the government does, no matter how beneficial these are to the overall good of the society.

As correctly observed by President Ali, “The PPP/C government is moving at a rapid pace to fulfil its manifesto promise to the Guyanese people and its role and agenda in Guyana and the Region are focused on the upliftment of Guyana and the Guyanese people and the repositioning of Guyana as a country of integrity, democracy and the rule of law as the basis on which decisions are made and the development of the country is advanced.”

Interestingly, many of the organisations that are now accusing the PPP/C administration of lack of transparency and accountability were silent during the attempts by forces aligned to the then APNU+AFC regime to rig the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections. To now speak about lack of transparency at a time when the country is on the road to rapid transformation and modernisation rings hollow and smacks of a fair degree of hypocrisy and political bias.

No wonder a number of non-governmental and civil society groups have distanced themselves from the allegations made, and have expressed in clear language that they have not endorsed the statement made. The transparency Institute Guyana Inc. (TIGI) and the Ursuline Sisters have both disassociated themselves from allegations made,

even as they were listed as ‘endorsing’ the claims made in the release by the NGOs grouping. Several other organisations listed as having ‘endorsed’ the statement, such as the Guyana Society for the Blind and several Amerindian leaders from several communities have disassociated themselves from the statement on the basis that it did not fairly and accurately represent the views of its members.

The fact is that the PPP/C has been elected in free and fair elections by a clear majority of the votes and therefore has a mandate from the Guyanese electorate to govern in their best interests. And that is exactly what President Ali and his PPP/C administration has been doing since gaining power on August 2020. Never before in Guyana’s history has so much development taken place within such a short span of time, and in keeping with the manifesto promises made to the people. The PPP/C administration is accountable to the Guyanese people and has a duty and responsibility to deliver on its promises, unlike those civil society organisations, some of which are without constituency representation.

This is not to suggest that the PPP/C administration is beyond criticism or is intolerant of criticisms, especially those that are constructive and done with the national good in mind. In fact, President Ali has repeatedly said that he welcomes criticism of his administration, but it must be done fairly and objectively and not in a way to score cheap political points.

The truth is that the PPP/C has always embraced a consultative and open approach to development, one in which the views and opinions of all stakeholders are taken

into account. This was manifested in the consultative manner in which the national budget was crafted with significant inputs from stakeholders, including the private sector, labour and other civil society groups.

The same was true with the recent enactment of the Local Content Bill and the members of the National Resource Fund (NRF) management board. As an indication of its commitment to work in partnership with civil society, the PPP in 1992 embraced a civil society component and has since contested all national and regional elections under the PPP/Civic arrangement. This is unlike the other main political party the PNC, which ‘morphed’ into several political mutations and currently contested elections as the APNU+AFC. President Ali in his address to the nation on the occasion of the country’s 52nd Republic Anniversary, while advancing his One Guyana vision, was also highly critical of individuals and groups in political and civic circles who seek to sabotage efforts towards a politically and socially unified Guyana. The President said that his administration welcomes constructive criticisms that are geared towards advancing Guyana as a society. Criticisms, he said, must not violate the principles of healthy debates and exchange of views which would allow for critical examination of policies, programmes, initiatives and plans.

These discussions, President Ali said, must not be based on selfish agendas, bias, perception, propaganda and feelings. Instead, they must be firmly rooted in facts and a pragmatic understanding of what is required in this rapidly developing Guyana.

Continuous registration approach to prepare citizens for LGEs Dear Editor, THERE are some decisive indicators that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is activating welcomed activities in preparation for Local Government Elections (LGEs).

This move follows a protracted period of public apprehension associated with numerous efforts by the main political opposition led by the PNCR, to first change the ‘Continuous Registration’ approach for updating the Register of Registrants, thereby realising further delays.

The necessary move to ensure that Guyanese are fully prepared and registered to go to the polls for Local Government Elections later this year is on the way. A recent GECOM press release confirmed commencement of the Continuous Registration exercise from Monday, March 7, 2022, following the established precedent within the legally approved framework.

Of course, the network of GECOM offices countrywide was created to support this mechanism over the years and must be fully utilised. Consequently, the advantage of convenience to citizens nationally should complement genuine efforts to get all Guyanese who are of age, to get on the Register of Registrants.

Significantly, this registration exercise is very important to those young persons who would be first-time applicants in the 14 to 18 years’ age group. While held continuous exercises would have allowed persons to be registered, GECOM’s cancellation

of the 2019 House-to-House Registration impacted many young persons who were registered during the exercise. Hence, this registration exercise will target the updating of all persons who will be 14 years and older by October 31,, 2022. This is providing they qualify as Guyanese citizens by birth, descent, naturalisation, or is a citizen of a Commonwealth country and have been living in Guyana for one year or more, There are currently 28 permanent GECOM Registration Offices located in the 10 administrative regions of Guyana. It is anticipated that GECOM will take advantage of this structure in promoting the necessary voters’ awareness and registration education exercise. Mobile and sub-offices complementary interventions will also have to be put in place to enhance ease of access by unregistered persons affected by difficult terrain. Our citizens must also be proactive in ensuring the readiness of their original birth certificates, valid passports, adoption, or naturalisation certificates in supporting applications for new registration.

It must be noted that for a change of name after marriage, applicants must have an original marriage certificate. Applicants must also bear in mind that with the massive housing drive by the PPP/C government, citizens who have established new residences should also take care of their transfers which will strengthen the respective community representation in the areas where they now reside, making it easier for them to exercise their rights on voting day.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, it is

understandable that GECOM is asking that all applicants provide proof of having been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to gain entrance to the respective GECOM Registration Offices. It follows that those persons who for different reasons did not take their vaccines will have to produce a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours.

These upcoming LGEs will be the first elections conducted by GECOM under a revised internal structure, given the removal of personnel against whom widespread evidence justified were involved in the clandestine attempts to rig the March 2020 General and Regional Elections. As Guyana celebrates its replacements and recognises the efforts of the commission to cleanse the

organisation, there is more to be done towards genuine efforts to ensure the holding of free and fair elections.

The APNU+AFC and the PNC must produce their Statements of Polls from the 2020 General and Regional Elections.

Further, GECOM must produce the reports of all the Returning Officers and the CEO to inform a proper assessment of all the incidents that took place during the five months.

This column encourages all Guyanese to do their best to get on the Register of Registrants.

Without the media the rigging would not have been exposed Dear Editor, THE country has completed the second anniversary of the attempt to rig (change) the legitimate outcome of the 2020 elections. It was a five-month

ordeal.

I was in the middle of the effort joining others in combating the rigging. Praise is deserved all around for those who saved democracy.

The election was held

a year late after it was due.

It should have been held by March 2019 following the Coalition incumbent’s defeat in a no-confidence vote in December 2018, but it was delayed through varied manipulation

stratagems and constitutional challenges.

Long before the election was held, since 2016, because of terrible policies of the Coalition regime and its behaviour towards Amerindians and Indi-

ans whose support was necessary for a democratic victory, I surmised it would be rigged.

No government keen on retaining support would so illtreat voters who crossed over from their traditional party to support it. And I so wrote publicly in the diaspora media and stated in discussions with Guyanese in America, Guyana, and the Caribbean that in order for the Coalition to win, it would have to rig the elections. Other Guyanese held similar views as they agreed that the Coalition could not win another free and fair election. Polls conducted by me showed the Coalition trailing the then opposition.

Rigging was the only option to prevent an opposition victory.

Discussions with Guyanese centred on how the rigging would take place. Some were given as well as strategies to combat them. Neither I nor other Guyanese with whom I conversed expected the rigging to take place in public after the voting. Everyone thought the rigging would take place before voting day through special voting and on Election Day with non-nationals given voter ID cards to cast ballots. I thought there would be creative, secretive and clever methods to rig the outcome, such as manipulating the voters list and stuffing the ballot boxes. The latter normally happened when goons rushed into polling stations, seized ballots, marked them, and put into the boxes in the waning hours of the day. There was some ballot-stuffing late in the day, but not enough to narrow the gap with the opposition.

I did not expect a bare-faced plan to change vote numbers on SOPs, and worse, that it would be done publicly with cameras filming it and in the presence of voters. No one expected that spreadsheets and bedsheets would have been used to change ballots in favour of the incumbent Coalition.

I spent considerable amount of time in Guyana before the elections. In fact, I was in and out of the country from 2015 thru 2020 testing support for the parties around the country. I met with international and local observers at their hotels and press briefings.

I attended several press conferences. Everyone was looking for signs of rigging. The voters list was monitored. Observers were plentiful. On election day, I visited several polling stations. I did not see outward signs of rigging, except some ballot-stuffing in one party’s stronghold in town, intimidat-

ing and driving away observers and poll workers.

All went well with the counting of ballots. It was clear that the ruling party lost as per SOPs. By late evening on election day, it was clear that the then opposition had won. Then chicanery and skulduggery started on March 3 to change the outcome. A press conference was called by observers. I attended. A deliberate attempt was made to rig the count on March 4. Another press conference was called. I was at the counting headquarters from March 2 thru 6. What I observed was shameful and disgraceful. Some GECOM staff attempted to rig the count. I observed their behaviour carefully and so did the observers.

The GECOM individuals who attempted to change the outcome did not care about how they would be viewed and their characters and reputations.

From March 3, I immediately began working the phones to apprise my contacts with foreign governments and diplomats at international organisations in Australia, New Zealand, UK, India, CARICOM, the OAS, UN and Trump administration, among others. I kept apprising them of what was happening and urged issuance of statements. I also used my contacts with international observers in Guyana to help secure the outcome based on the will of voters. The observers’ were very helpful. I was very close with a few key figures with whom I dined. They gave me a commitment to reject fraud.

They saved democracy; I can assure readers that they pressured key figures in the GECOM team to do the right thing. I was on the phone with some of them daily at regular intervals getting updates. I met with a few almost daily.

Without the observers, the election would have been rigged. The foreign diplomats were also essential to deter the rigging. Without the media, the rigging would not have been exposed. Thanks to the three independent newspapers and TV and radios.

Off course, in the end, the US government pulled the trigger on the government to accept the outcome.

Since March 2, 2020, Guyanese have been talking and reminiscing about the rigging. Democracy was saved. They describe those who saved democracy as true heroes.

New global perspectives on future of energy beyond oil & gas

By Earl Bousquet WHILE the world struggled to adjust to the new COVID-19 variants of interest and concern in the second month of 2022, and nations pondered the consequences of a gathering political storm of global proportions in Europe, Guyana hosted a three-day international energy conference.

Aimed at looking beyond Guyana, and oil & gas, the February 17-20, 2022 International Energy Conference and Expo hosted at the Georgetown Marriott Hotel under the theme, “Charting a Sustainable Energy Future”, exceeded all expectations, attracting 32 sponsors and 822 participants, 53 exhibitors, and 47 presenters.

Never mind the travel restrictions, the hybrid conference (Online and face-toface) attracted attention and participation from stakeholders way beyond Guyana’s borders, land and sea, and created vital business linkages between major and minor oil, gas end energy players at the local, regional and international levels.

Hosted by public and private sector sponsors to keep apace with Guyana’s fast-growing oil-and-gas industry, the event focused on broader discussions on contemporary related global factors like climate change and sustainability; diversified economic development; and regional and international energy cooperation.

That the inaugural event was organised and funded entirely privately by the newly-formed International Energy Conference and Expo Inc. -- headed by Anthony Whyte, Chairman, and Angenie Abe, Chief Executive Officer, and a supporting team of almost entirely young Guyanese -- was the greatest achievement.

Aimed at inviting participation by oil, gas and energy experts, and government and industry officials, and achieving a common goal and winwin situations for all, the conference attracted the personal presence of Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo; Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad Santoki,

and Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley, alongside ExxonMobil’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Darren Woods, and Hess Corporation’s CEO, John Hess.

Well attended by local businesses, as well as regional and international firms, the conference also served as a platform for creating new partnerships among local and foreign companies to form synergies, sharing resources and capabilities, improving competitiveness, and building capacity to meet the growing demand for goods and services in the energy sector.

Among the goals the conference achieved, the reviewers tabulated: Gathering the world’s biggest names in the energy sector; creating an enabling environment for high-level business-to-business engagements; facilitating smaller business-to-business engagements; creating opportunities for business-to-government and government-to-government engagements; and creating partnerships and linkages between Guyanese businesses and international entities.

The Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC) has also given the conference high marks, but says, too, that “the real work has now begun, for more reasons than one”.

Businesses at home and abroad always anxious to benefit from new opportunities, the Georgetown conference also opened up areas of international trade, and investment opportunities for local, regional and foreign investors from across Guyana, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

GOGEC notes that more partnerships with local companies ultimately mean more business, more job-creation, and greater competition for a newly-skilled labour force; and greater incentives for more Guyanese, first and foremost, to enhance their own competitiveness in the new and ever-expanding job market.

Guyana’s rapid expansion and development presents a plethora of opportunities for all stakeholders, and to ultimately improve the standard of living for all Guyanese.

ExxonMobil, alone, projects that over the next decade, it’ll be pumping oil and gas from six projects by 2027, and another four by the end 2032, increasing daily production to over one million barrels per day.

allowed his hosts to acknowledge the win-win factor behind his company’s role in taking Guyana’s Oil & Gas sector to where it is today, on its current economic transformation and development trajectory.

The conference also drew to the urgent attention of Guyanese businesses the need to move, fast, to quickly prepare for the new opportunities, and challenges, that will follow.

Oil and gas being only as one joint component of the broader energy conver-

sation, broadening the energy conversations beyond just oil & gas and Guyana was another major goal achieved, as the conference brought policymakers and industry practitioners, professionals and professors together in a single discussion with a common denominator: What the energy future will look like for Guyana and the world, in the current national, regional and global context.

Looking ahead, organisers say the 2022 conference surely laid a foundation for the next related gathering of minds -- al-

ready slated for February 14 -17, 2023 – planning for it to be bigger and better with the inclusion of more industries and conversations on how to adapt to and adopt sustainable measures.

The global effects of escalating developments in Europe laid bare the interconnectedness between all points in the energy industry -- from natural gas to nuclear power -- and examined ways of connecting those relationships today, tomorrow and the future, for the benefit of governments, people and stakeholders everywhere.

The ease and speed with which developments in one part of the world can affect nations and people in other corners of the globe was again laid bare against the backdrop of oil prices floating and hovering above the US$100 million mark that can spell boon and boom for some,

and doom and gloom for others.

The choices of energy alternatives from fossil to nuclear fuels also pose different challenges for different countries and energy industry players, from the cost and speed of transitioning to new sources, to the unpredictability of environmental and climate change, to the planned and unplanned effects of global politics and economics on the speed and reliability of advance planning.

Ensuring a clear understanding that energy goes beyond Oil & Gas was an important objective, and, with that achieved, the conference organisers must be both applauded and encouraged to ensure that next year’s will build on the progress achieved in 2022, and prepare Guyana’s energy industry for several other giant leaps

forward in 2024 and beyond.

As always, all will depend on all what happens along the road to the next conference -- how COVID and Supply Chain problems work out, how the international energy market adjusts to developments in Europe after the first conference ended and a host of other unpredictable factors.

But one thing is predictable, if only from related past and present experiences: The Guyana Government will remain on a path that allows it to continue to improve the lives and livelihoods of all Guyanese, while adjusting to new realities, overcoming new challenges, and welcoming new opportunities to genuinely ensure the nation’s energy needs are addressed with sustainability and the future both in mind.

The Coalition was oblivious to the framing process of social movement and mobilisation TWO years ago, Guyanese went to the polls to vote for the political party they want to lead them for at least five years, after a long and protracted period emanating from the No-Confidence Vote.

It was a pivotal election, dubbed as the mother of elections. The feeling was that whichever political party won the general election it would, most likely, retain power for decades to come. The rationale was those revenues emerging from the nascent oil and gas industry would give the sitting government the liberty to invest and showcase itself, placing it in a favourable position to be re-elected. The understanding was basic and straightforward. Any government that controlled the wealth from natural resources would promote some level of growth and development for the people, and therefore be well-placed to keep power.

In this laced environment of promise, the voters went to the polls and played their part, and all and sundry were pleased with the voting process, describing it as being one of the fairest in Guyana.

So pleasant was the voting process that within hours after the election international agencies moved Guyana up a few points in the democracy rating scale. The rigging of elections was seen as outdated. Then came the stunner.

The then sitting Coalition Government upon seeing the results of the election a few hours after the polls closed cried foul that the election was not fair and booked and took Guyana on a five-month journey reminiscent of the days of dictatorship and despotism. The only difference was that the practitioners of rigging were working and collaborating behind the scenes, but they were clumsy. The Coalition, through its sidekicks in GECOM, set out to twist the results claiming that it won the election through a series of bizarre explanations and court cases, undermining democracy and countering any evidence that it had indeed lost the election. The Coalition’s problem was that too many individuals within its rank and file were speaking from too many angles,

undermining its own claim of winning the election. Do you remember the claim that the Russians were involved in Guyana’s general election?

This is not the place to giggle.

Nevertheless, Guyanese of all stripes wondered if the mud land would slip back into dictatorship since those who were pulling the strings of electoral victory were still loyal to the longgone Kabaka. The Guyanese were hoping for a political Florence Nightingale to appear, and boy, a light of lamp did appear from overseas to Guyana, to the tents outside where the ballot boxes were kept, and to the judicial system. Guyana was saved.

There was also something else going on. The cracks and weaknesses of the Coalition were exposed. The claims of winning the election tested the sureness of stability and solidarity of the Coalition.

What surfaced was a decidedly fragile Coalition brought about by its too quick political marriage on Valentine’s Day, three months before May 2015 general election.

Not much time and thought were invested to forge common ground made worse by the lack of skills and competence. Subsequently, something had to be formed to hold on to power. The Coalition spun a leadership style that revolved around the thought that if the leaders look like leaders Guyanese would treat them like leaders. This was a big bluff that worked well as long as this illusion could be maintained. For most of its five-year existence in power, the Coalition was for itself married to self-sufficiency while divorced from the majority of the people. The Coalition extended its grip on the people and stripped them of their daily existence. The sugar workers, the vendors, and the working class are prime examples. Fired by suppression, Guyanese went to the polls and shook the Coalition. Their message was: your time is up.

By the fourth of the fivemonth-long impasse, the Coalition was holding on to power by the skin of its teeth, thinking it would at least hold on to power for another two years in which

time it would conjure up a plan. The Coalition, however, underestimated the power of social movements which had become increasingly global and effective. It was oblivious to the framing process of social movement and mobilisation that embraces and draws from a mutual understanding of common bonds, common identities, and the

garnering of support to demobilise regimes such as the APNU+AFC Coalition hellbent on stealing an election to stay in power.

The Guyana Spring of resistance and revolution eventually emerged, and in this process, two main forces surfaced. Those who joined with the PPP for a better Guyana and opportunities for

themselves and those who sided with the Coalition in open and closed doors. While this was expected, the latter group (65) has slimed out of its cocoon since the PPP entered office swinging in the name of justice in the dailies and over social media. There are consequences, however, when governments are fixated on the false flag idea of hold-

ing on to power against the will of their citizens.

The semantics and fate of the Coalition were sealed by the pronouncements of the then US Secretary of State which in effect installed the Coalition in the opposition and saved democracy in Guyana. (lomarsh.roopnarine@jsums. edu).

Hiding behind the cloak of political independence

ON Thursday, two media entities carried blistering and damming reports of civil society groups criticising the Government of Guyana. Amongst the concerns were matters that dealt with the fast pace at which the PPP Government was executing its projects, due diligence, transparency and accountability issues, and general consultation

and inclusivity issues.

The groups appeared to be concerned, on the surface, about Guyana’s development.

They feared that the PPP Government was out of control as one newspaper puts it, and would let Guyana down the slippery slope to corruption and partisan politics.

Firstly, these groups are masquerading as civil society organisations.

They are just fronts. They are paper organisations established with the sole purpose of criticising the PPP Government and its handling of projects.

If one were to analyse their advocacies, one would be left astonished.

They are antagonistic towards the PPP Government offering citizens no truth or facts on the subject matters.

Also, they do not represent a large membership or wide cross-section of Guyanese.

There are no public elections for some heads of the so-called civil organisations.

For example, the Guyana Human Rights Association comes to mind.

Others have no creditability, inclusive of the politically-biased Guyana Organisa-

tion of Indigenous Peoples (GOIP) and the Policy Forum Guyana Inc (PFG).

Did they even know about the political content and context of the statements issued?

Who are the members of the East Coast Development Committees (ECDC)?

And what does the Guyana Workers Union do that citizens should care what it has to say?

Secondly, these phantom civil society groups were silent all along under the APNU+AFC Coalition Government.

They appeared to be defunct and sleeping as the PPP, in association with some brave Guyanese organisations, took the then APNU+AFC Government See page 13

to task for their partisan and corrupt actions.

They are willfully and one-sided, cherry-picking which issues they will be outraged about. Where were the voices of objection to the long five months when our democracy was threatened by the Granger Administration and the riggers?

Where were the voices when the now parliamentary opposition chose not to obey the law following the no-confidence motion and several

breaches of the law?

Were they upset, livid, awake and concerned then about the issues surrounding the appointment of the GECOM Chairman and the lies concerning the US$18M signing bonus.

After all, Guyanese cannot respect them and the criticisms they have about what is going on, justified or not, about the government’s handling of the National Resource Fund, local government or consultation.

They are political roosters and front men being used to settle political and business scores for the opposition politicians who do not enjoy the favour of the PPP Government.

Thirdly, these quasi-civil society groups cannot seriously criticise the PPP Government’s work agenda and developmental projects by saying it is moving too fast.

This criticism is almost too laughable or ludicrous to be believable.

Perhaps, it has dawned on the masquerading groups but citizens want development and they want it now, especially with Guyana having oil and gas reserves which are the best in this hemisphere.

The PPP Government, it is hoped, will not slow down its pace but will ensure that the checks and balances are in place and functioning to ensure good governance, transparency and accountability and value for money.

In any case, the tone and

spirit of the statement made by those intellectual authors in the so-called civil society groups seem like they intend on derailing the prosperity and progress of Guyana by calling for a slow-down in the manner in which they access their rightful patrimony.

Additionally, they use the environmental concerns as the weapon of choice and convenience to muster legal or other forms of support for their agendas.

Finally, civil society must believe in the facts and truth.

They should not allow themselves to be caught up in telling little white lies or the truth of convenience. They must practise constructive criticisms and telling the PPP Government like it is, behind closed doors before they venture out to the public.

The civil society statement cannot be taken seriously because its authors are hiding behind the cloak of political independence.

The role of insurance in paying for oil spills WITH respect to recent debates about the role of insurance in oil spills and who bears responsibility when such disasters occur, it is important to lay out the facts.

Concerns about something as damaging as a spill and who would pay for it are justified. But it is vital to understand that insurance is not the primary form of as-

surance companies normally provide.

Insurance is ultimately just one of many avenues for financial assurance in case of a disaster. The first line of

defence is always prevention and thankfully ExxonMobil is considered an industry-leading operator in this respect as a result of reforms made over the past three decades includ-

ing a dedicated in-house spill response research programme.

During exploration, development and production, companies maintain many types of insurance to cover worker safety, construction, accidents, and more. But much of the media coverage thus far has mistakenly assumed that it is this insurance that pays for rare disasters like oil spills. As made evident by history, this is not normally the case.

When it comes to a significant accident like a spill, a company will normally pay most of the costs from its own pocket, which allows response activities to begin immediately. The example of the 2010 BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico illustrates how a company is held financially responsible for a spill, and where the funding for that liability comes from. Damages and liability costs were largely paid for directly by BP and other culpable parties such as BP’s drilling partners. The small remaining portion of the $69 billion in costs was split between insurance and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, which is funded largely via taxes levied on the oil industry.

While insurance companies and lawyers may take time to determine liability, it is paramount that clean up and mitigation activities begin immediately following a spill.

An insurance company must work out the legal and monetary details of lawsuits and damages, which can take years and often end up being only a small percentage of the actual costs. That’s a major reason why many companies choose either to self-insure or simply maintain large cash reserves to pay for any damage that might occur in the rare event of a spill.

ExxonMobil has made it clear that its own ability and willingness to pay for any damage caused by oil is not tied to the level of insurance and that it will cover all legitimate costs. The company’s local subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana

Limited maintains roughly US $5 billion in assets as additional assurance.

In the event of a spill, there would be little time to wait for insurance. Resources would have to be deployed immediately, in conjunction with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC)—the designated national authority with general responsibility for response to oil spill emergencies. The Maritime Administration Department and the Guyana Energy Agency would also be key partners responsible for coordinating response activities and operations. Oil and gas companies are required to have a comprehensive CDC-approved oil spill plan in order to operate in Guyana.

ExxonMobil, in collaboration with the CDC, also developed the oil spill response training for its Volunteer Emergency Response Team, which trains representatives from state bodies and citizen volunteers to respond in emergency situations such as oil spills.

The Stabroek Block companies are also negotiating with the government to provide an additional US $2 billion in guarantees—a level that meets international standards and even surpasses what regulators in countries like the U.S. and Canada require.

In addition to abundant financial, operational, and human resources, Guyana is part of the regional Caribbean Islands Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Cooperation Plan, under which island states and territories may cooperate at an operational level in responding to oil spill incidents. These measures mean Guyana and ExxonMobil Guyana are well-positioned to respond to an incident if it does happen.

But prevention is, and should remain, the priority. The government should continue to implement and refine smart regulations to ensure that the growth of its oil industry does not come at the cost of health and safety.

Inhaled formulations are the preferred route of treatment for some respiratory diseases

THE respiratory system is the pathway that allows for the gaseous exchange.

It starts from the nose and mouth, then to the trachea (windpipe), down the bronchi (main branches) and into the pair of lungs.

It is further divided into smaller branches called the bronchioles and the alveoli, tiny air sacs. A network of blood capillaries surround the alveoli which has an ultra-thin membrane that allows the blood to transport oxygen for energy production in the cells and simultaneously removing the waste product, carbon dioxide.

This process of breathing is mostly an involuntary action initiated by the brain. It signals to the diaphragm when to contract and relax, causing expiration and inspiration in coordination with the intercostal muscles in the chest cavity.

Irritants such as cleaning agents, environmental pollutants, radioactive gases, cigarette smoke and other factors such as microbes and genetics, may cause functional impairment of the respiratory system at varying severity.

Respiratory diseases are categorised as obstructive (asthma, bronchitis and emphysema), infections from viral, bacterial or fungi (e.g. pneumonia and tuberculosis), environmental (asbestosis or particulate pollutant) and vascular disease (e.g. pulmonary hypertension) and restrictive (e.g. fibrosis).

Some conditions like asthma are reversible with oral, inhaled, nebulise or injectable medications whilst other conditions like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are irreversible.

Well established research has confirmed that using inhaled formulations as the first line of treatment in mild or moderate obstructive respiratory diseases, such as asthma and COPD yielded the best outcomes. Yet, today, the inhalers are still underuti-

lised because of various misconceptions.

A detailed illustration of the breakdown of both oral and inhaled formulations after entering the body may demonstrate why inhalers are the first choice. Generally oral formulations such as tablets, syrups and capsules must first undergo dissolution (except syrups), absorption and first pass metabolism through the liver (breaking down the formula to the active molecule) before it becomes bioavailable. In the case of salbutamol tablets, only 50 per cent of the drug becomes bioavailable for its bronchodilation mechanism of action. One salbutamol tablet has 4 milligrams or equivalent to 4,000 micrograms of active ingredient.

Comparatively, with the pressurised metered-dose inhalers, one puff (actuation) of the inhaler is 100 micrograms, since the canister is primed with active micronised molecules which go directly to the target site (lungs) and initiate its mechanism of action. No dissolution, no absorption and no first pass metabolism is engaged. So the patient can use less amount of salbutamol thereby reducing the systemic associated side effects with tablets like heart palpitations, hand tremor and nervous tension. Also it has a faster onset of action which is key in such difficult breathing conditions where time is a significant factor, especially if there is associated anxiety. So in emergency situations, short-acting inhalers are a better choice because of speed of onset action and elimination of unwanted systemic side effects.

However, combination inhalers with long-acting bronchodilators and corticosteroids are best for daily maintenance dose, thus minimising emergency situations. They are designed to work synergistically to prolong the therapeutic bronchodilation (expanding the airways) and re-

ducing the inflammations (cleaning up the mucus build up) over a 24 hour period. However, it must be emphasised that such inhalers are not to be used in emergency attacks since their half-life is long and hence their onset of action takes some time.

The downside when using an inhaler are improper user technique, occasional stimulation of a cough reflex or a sore throat. The latter can be alleviated by taking a few sips of water about 10 minutes after using an inhaler. Or if the user engages in an improper technique, then you can rectify also by requesting a demonstration before leaving the pharmacy so that any required adjustments may be made.

There are complimentary devices such as spacers, which, when attached to the inhaler, create a one way flow of the medication at a rate which will reach the lungs. Without the spacers one has to coordinate one’s breathing with the puff of aerosol, which, if out of sync, can waste the medication or make it stick to the back of your throat causing irritation.

To ensure that your inhaled medication never runs out, you can estimate the amount remaining by extracting the canister from the case and immersing in a half-glass of water. If it sinks to the bottom then it is full, if only half submerge then it is half filled and if it floats to the top then it is empty.

More than 700 GPL employees to get six per cent salary increase

THE Guyana Power and Light (GPL) workers’ representative body, on Thursday last, reached an agreement that will see over 700 employees receiving a six per cent increase in their salary.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Labour, the six per cent is an increase from a four per cent offer GPL had placed on the table weeks ago. The agreement states that GPL agreed to pay the six per cent increase and the National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees

The management of Guyana Power and Light with Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Renford Homer; Bal Persaud, Divisional Director for Human Resources and representatives of the union.

(NAACIE) accepts a six per cent all-inclusive increase in wages and salaries as full and final settlement of

all claims for increases in remuneration for the year 2021.

All-inclusive comprises

of the automatic annual, in scale increase, across the board increase, and annual performance incentive for

2021.

The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Labour between the man-

agement of GPL, led by Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Renford Homer; Bal Persaud, Divisional Director for Human Resources and representatives of the union.

Chief Labour Officer (CLO), Mr. Dhaneshwar Deonarine, said that the conclusion of the agreement brings much satisfaction.

“At times, I thought it would come to me for conciliation. So, when I say I’m happy I mean it.” He mentioned.

The union also indicated that it will immediately commence talks for 2022.

Harmon resigns from Parliament

FORMER Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon has resigned as a Member of Parliament (MP).

He submitted his resignation letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly; the Sunday Chronicle understands that the resignation takes effect from March 15, 2022.

January last, Harmon, under pressure, had also resigned from the post of Leader of the Opposition,

one month after he suffered an embarrassing defeat at the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R)’s congress.

His rival, Aubrey Norton, won the majority of the votes for Leader of the PNC/R, the largest party in the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition.

Harmon had initially refused to step down as

Opposition Leader, on the grounds that he can still perform that role despite his disappointing showing at the PNC/R internal elections, and the fact that he was also booted from the highest decision- making body of the party, the Central Executive Committee (CEC).

The PNC/R is yet to elect a new Opposition Leader, and Norton, although being elected

through a process which involved only one-third of the PNC/R’s electorate, has also been catapulted to the position of Chairman of the ANPU. It is suspected that Harmon’s resignation will pave the way for Norton to take up a seat in the National Assembly, and then ultimately be elected as the country’s new Opposition Leader.

It is customary for the leader of the PNC/R party

to also simultaneously hold the position of Opposition Leader, Leader of the APNU+AFC coalition, and Representative of the List for the APNU+AFC. Meanwhile, former Education Minister Nicolette Henry, who’d served under the David Granger administration, last month announced her resignation as a Parliamentarian, effectoive March monthend.

Northwell Health donates about $24M in equipment to GPHC

NORTHWELL HEALTH – New York’s largest healthcare provider - on Saturday, donated medical equipment worth about US$120,000 (G$24 million) to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to help boost the services offered to the public.

The equipment donated include a microscope, bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, along with laparoscopic training boxes.

“You can’t just come here and talk about partnership and how you’re going to help, you have to show it and I’m very excited that

Meanwhile, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GPHC, Robbie Rambarran, said Northwell Health has made a significant impact since the formation of the partnership with Guyana.

“There are severe challenges with our nursing; there is a leadership programme that is ongoing. It is a weekly engagement virtually, and we have already seen the little impacts it is making,” Rambarran said.

Rambarran assured Dr. Peña that the equipment will be put to use as early as Monday.

‘Without dialysis, I would have been dead five years ago’

–– woman living with diabetes, kidney failure pushing for more sensitisation programmes

TURNING back the hands of time is a dream Faye Abigail Young has long cherished, but she knows, only too well, that she cannot change the inevitable, so she’s decided to use what little time she has left on earth to be an advocate for diabetic and kidney disease patients here in Guyana.

Having experienced first-hand what it is like to live with a terminal illness, Young, since being diagnosed with diabetes in her early 30s, has become a friend, adviser, and confidante for anyone who is in need of emotional support as they navigate living with diabetes and kidney failure.

In recounting her diagnosis, Young told the Sunday Chronicle that she was overworked and had fallen ill; at the time, she’d linked her sickness to stress and exhaustion. However, after following up with a doctor’s visit, she learnt that she was diabetic, and had been living with the disease, undiagnosed, for some time.

“I did not think that it was diabetes. At the time, I thought it was just from stress; I was working from 12-16 hours, and it was very hectic, so I thought the tiredness and the fatigue was just from that,” Young said, adding: “But then I got really sick, and I noticed that my legs started swell a bit. So I went to the doctor next door to my office, and he told me that I had to go to the hospital. So, when I was admitted to the hospital, they said that I had diabetes, and I needed insulin and everything else. So, that was a lifestyle change for me.”

Young has had several medical procedures during her lifetime; she is currently visually impaired in one eye.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.

In 2018, Young fell even sicker, and later found out that she had kidney failure.

While she knew that her

illness would put her at risk for kidney disease and other serious life-altering illnesses, she believes it was the lack of sensitisation that led to her developing kidney failure.

“One problem that I have with the medical institution is that they don’t warn you about certain things that could happen to you when you are diagnosed; they don’t explain certain things,” Young said.

For example, she said, “Being at the clinic, I’ve met patients who have no idea what being on dialysis is, and they think dialysis is a death sentence, which is not; dialysis actually saves lives.

If I was not taking dialysis, I would have been dead about five years ago.”

TERMINAL ILLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH The cost of living with any terminal illness can be burdensome.

For persons who have been diagnosed with kidney failure, it costs them almost G$180,000 monthly for dialysis treatment. This treatment is essential, and is required to be administered three times a week.

In addition to this, some patients may require medical procedures or surgeries. This adds to the stress of dealing with extreme pain, and tiresome symptoms, and so, many people develop some form of mental illness, especially depression.

“When I was first diagnosed with kidney failure and I went on dialysis, I cried for days; I was really depressed.

I was in my hospital bed, and I would just cry, because I could not believe that this was happening to me,” Young said.

“I decided to become a precautionary tale; I decided that I couldn’t just lay there and do nothing, so I decided to become an advocate for kidney disease patients,” she added.

Now in her 40s, Young, through her social media platforms, has been advocating for more resources to be made readily available to patients living with kidney failure.

She told the Sunday Chronicle that social workers should be stationed at the dialysis clinics in Guyana, and is advocating for more

sensitisation campaigns to be held all year round, and not only during Kidney Awareness Month.

However, some efforts are being made, and Faye, like many other dialysis patients, is looking forward

to benefitting from the Government of Guyana’s budgeted financial support of dialysis patients in 2022.

Boy, 18, critical after cement mixer turned on with him inside AN 18-year-old labourer is fighting for his life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after his co-worker turned on a cement mixer unaware that he was inside the machine cleaning it.

In a critical condition is 18-year-old Ricardo Nandlal of South De Kinderen Line-Top, West Coast Demerara (WCD). The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at Forrester Lumber and Building Complex, Stewartville, WCD. According to a police report, the 22-year-old co-worker is in police custody.

“Divisional Police Commander, Errol Watts, has indicated that the co-worker remain in custody, on the prisoner bench, as they await updates on the victim, given at the moment that his actions were not malicious but suspected to be that of negligence,” the police report noted.

The owner of the company, 47-year-old Andrew Forrester, told the cops that the young man went inside the machine to clean it while the ‘mixer operator’ had no idea he was inside and turned it on.

The young labourer then began to scream when others rushed and pulled him out.

He was rushed to the Leonora Hospital and later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he remains in a critical condition.

Investigations are ongoing.

16 new COVID-19 cases recorded THE Ministry of Health has reported that there are currently 320 active COVID-19 cases in Guyana, following the addition of 16 new cases on March 5, 2022.

The 16 newly confirmed cases were recorded in Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Six and Seven.

The new infections were recorded from Region One (one case), Region Two (three cases), Region Three (two cases), Region Four (eight cases), Region Six (one case) and Region Seven (one case).

The country has now recorded a total of 63,040 cases since March 2020.

Of the active cases, four persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal; 15 are in institutional isolation; 290 are in home isolation,

and 11 are in institutional quarantine.

Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, they are not exhibiting symptoms.

The updated COVID–19 Emergency Measures are in force until March 31, 2022. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.

As per the current measures, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and physical distancing and adequate sanitisation are recommended.

Persons with symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to call the COVID-19 hotline numbers: 231-1166; 2267480; or 180/181 for assistance.

‘We have our lives back’ –– thanks to doctors at the National Ophthalmology Hospital, say cataract patients

By Nafeeza Yahya-Sukar WHILE one can close an eye or both and experience what it would be like if one were blind, nothing compares to seeing only darkness and not knowing if you will ever see the light again.

These were the sentiments expressed by Dhanpat Ramsingh, 75, who recently underwent a successful operation at the National Ophthalmology Hospital (NOH) located in the compound of the Port Mourant Hospital to restore his sight after cataract blocked his vision.

Ramsingh of Bloomfield Village, East Berbice, Corentyne, is one of many patients who had their vision successfully restored since the NOH resumed cataract surgeries in early February following a sixyear hiatus.

“Both eyes had the cataract but I do the right one private cause with both eyes I couldn’t see clearly and small tasks became hard for me. But I still couldn’t see well so I keep checking at Port Mourant because I’m a pensioner and I couldn’t afford it.”

He continued that, in 2020, he was told his name was listed as being among the first to have surgeries done and on the 4th February 2022, he received the much anticipated call and went on the 16th February to have the operation done.

Now a little over two weeks after, Ramsingh is high in praise for the doctors and government for helping him to have his sight restored.

Subachan Basant ana Chronicle, an emotional Ramsingh said being able to see clearly again is a “blessing” he has most gratefully accepted.

He explained that, initially, he was scheduled to “clean both eyes” in 2016 but since the hospital had closed and he was unable to see, he was forced to have a cataract surgery on his right eye at a private institution.

The pensioner noted that one of his hobbies was reading and being unable to see clearly and move around much less read, made him depressed and worried.

The NOH had stopped doing major surgeries since 2016 but has continued to screen patients and perform minor operations as the

Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, speaking at a recent event in the region, highlighted that more than $100M was spent on refurbishing and purchasing equipment for the facility.

“We recognised that all the theatres were in a poor shape, the microscopes that were used to operate with they were in bad condition, so last year we spent in excess $100M to start, not just refurbishing the theatres, but buying the equipment; so by the first quarter of this year a lot of the equipment would be coming in and we have set aside additional resources to make sure that the hospital is fully functional.”

NOH Director, Dr. Vineshri Khirodhar explained that in 2021 alone, over 30,000 patients had minor procedures and staffers are hoping to have the almost 3,000 backlog of patients listed for major surgeries cleared by the end of the year while still taking walk-in patients.

WELL-STAFFED She is optimistic that the goal can be achieved since the facility now boasts four theatre nurses, five ophthalmologists, inclusive of a surgeon, a clinical ophthalmologist,

a retina specialist and a neuro-ophthalmologist.

Further, there is also a biomedical technician and a lab technician attached to the hospital.

Further, she pointed out that the hospital, which has four wards with five beds each, is also equipped to house patients travelling from afar overnight following their surgeries.

Meanwhile, Latifa Saheer, who also had a major surgery recently, related that she was very happy to regain her independence after close to six years.

“About six years ago I was supposed to have the surgery but when I reached to the theatre my eye pressure was high, afterwards they give me another date to go back but I had to wait from then to now because they stop.”

Recalling the difficulties, Saheer noted that her husband had to assist her or in his absence she needed someone else to help her in

“It was very bad for me.

I felt I lost my independence because for a number of household tasks, I had to be dependent on someone to assist me. I wasn’t seeing good, my vision was not just cloudy but very dark.

It was painful sometimes and with just seeing on one eye made the eye feeling pressured. My husband had to take care of me, he does fishing work in Cayenne and he had to come home to assist.

If I had to go out my husband had to hold my hand, when I cook I either throw plenty oil or the cube paper in the pot, many times it was very hard,” she recalled.

TEARS OF JOY However, since her surgery, a little over two weeks ago, she is now moving around by herself and is slowly adapting to being independent again.

With tears of joy, Saheer said she now has her “life back”.

“The operation went well, those staff at the hospital especially the doctors were kind and treat me so well. I am 100 per cent

now. I am very thankful because I could not afford to do this privately and now I have my own life back, you don’t know how much this means to me… thank you very much to the doctors and government. I can see and do my own things without having to depend on anyone now.”

Subachan Basant, 69, of Lot 91 Gangaram Settlement, East Canje also expressed similar senti-

ments after battling for a little over three years with blurry vision after being diagnosed with cataract.

He noted that for three plus years, he had to be subjected to constantly stumping his toes or walking into objects and being unable to read or watch television.

Following the surgery, Basant said he can now perform with ease almost any task by himself and does not even need to wear his spectacles.

“What this surgery did for me no one would understand until you go

through it, I could not do anything much myself, now I don’t even need my glasses, I can read, I can see people passing in the street, I can now tell the difference between male and female without hearing them speak. I am thankful because if the hospital didn’t open back up for surgery, I don’t know what would happen cause I can’t afford to do this private.

I’m a pensioner and the staff was really nice and caring,” a very grateful Basant said.

Beers, tears flow as MCG stand renamed for Warne

FLOWERS, meat pies and beer cans have been laid at Shane Warne’s statue at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) following the Australian cricketing legend’s sudden death.

News broke in the early hours of Friday that the 52-year-old had died of a suspected heart attack in Koh Samui, Thailand.

Warne’s manager, James Erskine, confirmed on Fox Cricket that one of Warne’s friends performed CPR on him after finding the 52-yearold unresponsive in his bed in a villa after he was late in rousing.

Warne was taken to the Thai International Hospital but could not be revived.

Warne, who was born in the Melbourne suburb of Upper Ferntree Gully, leaves behind daughters Brooke, 24, and Summer, 20, and son Jackson, 22.

Azhar drives hosts Pakistan to big total before play ended early

PAKISTAN have taken an iron grip of the first Test after veteran Azhar Ali once again tormented Australia’s bowlers and his team put themselves in a position from where history suggests they cannot lose.

On a day when Australia mourned the death of their greatest-ever Test bowler Shane Warne, the pace-heavy attack deployed at Rawalpindi was blunted by the home team’s unhurried and impassable batting and a pitch that offered little other than runs and exhaustion.

At the close of day two, Australia were 5-0 after just one over at the crease in pursuit of Pakistan’s (decl.) 476-4.

That hefty total was built on the back of towering knocks from Azhar (185) and opener Imam-ul-Haq (157) with record books showing in their 70 years at international level Pakistan have never lost a Test after scoring 475 or more in the first innings of a match.

Indeed, only 12 teams in the game’s almost 150-year history have posted a total of 475 or more in the first innings of a match and lost.

And just two of those – India’s defeat of England at Chennai in 2016 and their triumph over Australia at Bengaluru six years earlier – took place on the sub continent.

Australia’s interim coach Andrew McDonald observed at the close of day one – on which his bowlers claimed a solitary wicket – that if Pakistan were still batting a day later then it would become increasingly apparent only two results (Pakistan win and a draw) effectively remained in play.

However, the second stage of that pincer movement – to “make inroads in terms of the wicket tally” – proved no more incisive than it had been a day earlier.

Its ambition was not aided

by Australia’s wretched record of DRS challenges, with Imam surviving an appeal 143 after the umpire’s not-out call was not referred to the video referee.

Imam had flashed loosely at a ball from Lyon that pitched outside the left-hander’s offstump from around the wicket and passed beneath the opener’s bat prompting an immediate appeal from Carey which he soon downgraded to understandable excitement that ball had beaten bat.

Discussion ensued with Cummins urgently enquiring from his fielding position at mid-wicket whether it required closer examination, but the non-stop buzz of noise from the joyful Rawalpindi crowd seemingly led the Australians to doubt what they might have heard and the case was closed.

When television replays confirmed the ball had indeed grazed the under-side of Imam’s bat, Cummins offered a rueful smile that effectively

hid the frustration that surely fumed within.

That discontent doubtless led to the decision 11 overs later to initiate a review when Azhar aimed a rare pull shot at one of the countless short balls Cummins fired his way in his six-hour occupation to that point, and which appeared to fly harmlessly through to Carey.

But the Australia captain was convinced he’d heard something above the constant drone from the plastic trumpets, and burned the second of his team’s three reviews in ascertaining he was mistaken.

By that time Azhar had cruised to his 19th Test century – his fourth in 10 appearances against Australia – and Australia’s barren run without a wicket had stretched to almost 90 overs The 37-year-old now boasts 1 185 runs against Australia at an average of almost 56, with yesterday’s effort only surpassed by the unbeaten 205 the right-hander scored as an opener in the 2016 Boxing Day Test at the MCG. The breakthrough came three balls after the squandered review when Cummins

got a delivery to shape marginally into Imam, having pitched on middle and leg and – with the weary opener pinned on the crease – plumb in front of his stumps.

It almost seemed an attempt at a bit of fun when Imam decided to review the call which showed the ball slamming into middle twothirds of the way up, but the confirmation triggered an annoyed response from the lefthander who slammed his bat into his pad and shouted to the heavens.

Perhaps his anger was triggered by realisation he had fallen 20 runs shy of equalling the highest Test score posted by his revered uncle Inzamam-ul-Haq at Rawalpindi, a benchmark of which Imam was reminded during day one’s post-match media conference.

And if the 26-year-old looked to be mollified by the crowd’s rousing recognition of his career-high tally that had lifted his team to a position of near invincibility, he might have been further aggrieved when the local fans began chanting for Pakistan skipper Babar who was on his way to the wicket.

ENGLAND fell just short of a record chase in a nerve-shredding defeat

by Australia in their opening match of the Women’s World Cup in Hamilton.

Set 311, the defending champions were taken agonisingly close by a magnificent 109 not out from Nat Sciver.

Needing 16 from the final over, bowled by Jess Jonassen, England could only manage three to end on 298-8 and lose by 12 runs.

On a day when Australia paid tribute to legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne and wicket-keeping great Rod Marsh, the tournament favourites posted 310-3 - the highest total by any team against England.

Rachael Haynes compiled a superb 130 and captain Meg Lanning weighed in with 86.

England needed 78 from 49 balls with only four wickets in hand when Sciver was joined at the crease by Katherine Brunt.

Their hitting gave England an outside chance going into the final over, but Australia bravely gave the ball to left-arm spinner Jonassen, who took a stunning one-handed return catch to dismiss Brunt and effectively end the contest.

India on top after supreme Jadeja-led all-round show … All-rounder slams 175* to set up declaration then joins wicket-takers’ party to push Sri Lanka on the back foot

INDIA’S bowlers brought all their quality to bear on a pitch just beginning to offer turn and variable bounce, to bag a fifth of the wickets they need to win the Mohali Test, after Ravindra Jadeja made an unbeaten 175, the highest score by an Indian No.7, to help them post a formidable first-innings total.

Jadeja and R. Ashwin would make a serious impact with the ball in the final session of the day, picking up three of the four Sri Lankan wickets to fall.

Well before that, though, they put on a smooth, untroubled, century stand to snuff out any hope Sri Lanka may have had when day two began with India 357 for 6.

Jadeja then added an unbroken 103 with Mohammed Shami for the ninth wicket, their runs coming at more than a run a ball against a flagging attack and a ragged pack of fielders, before India declared.

Rohit Sharma called his batters in with Jadeja 25 runs from a double-hundred.

While he didn’t get a chance to add that feat to his two first-class triples, the timing of the declaration gave In-

They squeezed 43 overs of pace, spin and testing game-plans into that time, and at stumps, Sri Lanka were four down and a massive 466 runs adrift of India’s first-innings total.

India used four bowlers within the first 10 overs, throwing almost all their weapons at Sri Lanka’s openers and testing the surface for everything it could potentially offer when the ball was still new and hard. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 19th over, in a most familiar manner.

Lahiru Thirimanne had

faced 36 pressure-packed balls from Ashwin to Dimuth Karunaratne’s six, and he had been kept constantly on guard by the off-spinner’s changes of pace and trajectory. He had already been beaten a couple of times on the outside edge, but ball 37 turned less than Thirimanne expected as he pressed forward to defend, and slid past his inside edge to have him lbw.

Jadeja, the last of India’s five bowlers to be introduced, replaced Ashwin after a 10over spell, and immediately had Karunaratne in strife with sharp turn from the rough outside the left-hander’s off

stump. Having had an lbw appeal turned down off his first ball, Jadeja had one upheld off his second, with the ball ripping in to beat the inside edge as Karunaratne shuffled nervously across his stumps.

Karunaratne had looked fluent through most of his innings, timing the ball crisply off his pads when given the opportunity, and using his feet well against the spinners. But there wasn’t a lot he could have done about the wicket ball.

Angelo Mathews’ stay at the crease was similar; he hit a four and a six when Jadeja overpitched, and moved to 22 before Jasprit Bumrah squared him up and hit his back pad with a ball that defied the pitch to straighten sharply off the seam. Given out on a 50-50 lbw call, a review returned umpire’s call verdicts on both impact and where the ball was projected to hit the stumps.

Bumrah could have had another wicket in his previous over, when he sneaked a brilliantly disguised slower off-cutter through Pathum Nissanka’s attempted drive, but the third umpire had caught him overstepping.

Even apart from those two deliveries, this spell from Bumrah was breathtaking, combining pace, pinpoint short balls, and a hint of reverse swing when he went full.

Ashwin returned late in the day for one last spell, and he struck immediately, though on this occasion it was an indiscretion from the batter that led to his downfall - Dhananjaya de Silva becoming the fourth man out lbw in the innings while attempting a risky sweep off the line of the stumps.

Ashwin had figures of 13-6-21-2 at stumps, a terrific finish to a day he had begun with an innings that harked back to his early years in Test cricket, full of effortless drives through the off side and the V. Sri Lanka set defensive fields right from the start of the day, with sweepers on both boundaries, but he still scored his 61 runs at a strike rate of 74.39.

Jadeja receded into the background for most of his partnership with Ashwin, but after the latter’s dismissal - which was immediately followed by that of Jayant Yadav, the only India bat-

ter to not get into double figures - he switched gears effortlessly. Having been on 105 off 173 balls at the time of Jayant’s dismissal, Jadeja clattered 70 runs off his next 54 balls.

Having kept it hidden all through the first half of his innings, he brought out the lofted drive, and hit three straight sixes off Lasith Embuldeniya and de Silva.

Over recent years, Jadeja has lifted both his whiteball hitting and his Testmatch crease occupation to new heights, while largely keeping the two sides of his batting personality strictly compartmentalised. Here was one occasion when he could let one bleed into the other.

Shami, usually happy to slog at everything, blocked stubbornly at his end, and contributed no runs to the first 50 runs of his partnership with Jadeja. Sri Lanka’s bowling and fielding wilted after this point, and at one point Vishwa Fernando fumbled the ball and let Shami escape when both batters were stranded at the same end.

Legendary Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh dies aged 74 after heart attack

LEGENDARY Australia wicketkeeper Rod Marsh has died aged 74 after suffering a heart attack.

Marsh took ill last Thursday while travelling to a charity cricket match in Queensland.

He effected 355 dismissals - a world record at the time of his retirement - in 96 Test appearances for Australia from 1970 to 1984.

He also played 92 oneday internationals and served as Australia men’s chairman of selectors until 2016.

Marsh is third on Australia’s all-time dismissals list behind Adam Gilchrist with 416 and Ian Healy’s 395.

Australia Test great Mark Waugh described Marsh as “an absolute icon” of the sport.

Waugh continued: “I had the pleasure of working with Rod for a number of years as a selector and you wouldn’t meet a more honest, down to earth, kind-hearted person.”

Former Australia one-day international David Hussey paid tribute on Twitter, writing: “Rod will be missed.

“His saying, ‘cricket is a simple game made complicated’ still resonates with me.”

Marsh went on to form a formidable partnership with fast bowler Dennis Lillee, with the pair combining for a record 95 Test dismissals.

However, he had a difficult start to his Test career and was nicknamed ‘Iron Gloves’ during his first series against England in 1970-71 after dropping numerous catches.

He came close to a maiden century during that Ashes series, making an unbeaten 92 in Melbourne before captain Bill Lawry declared with Australia nine down.

Marsh did not feel as though he had missed out on a century, saying that he thought Lawry should have declared much earlier.

He later became the first Australian wicketkeeper to score a Test century when he reached triple figures against England in the 1977 Centenary Test.

On the 1981 tour of England, Marsh became the first keeper to claim 100 dismissals in Ashes Tests.

After retiring, Marsh commentated on Australian television before taking on a coaching role at the Australian National Academy.

He later took on a similar role with the England and Wales Cricket Board and was a selector for the men’s team from 2001 to 2005.

Marsh served as the Australian chairman of selectors from 2014 to 2016, stepping down after Australia were hammered at home by South Africa.

Australia Test captain Pat Cummins said Marsh’s death had left a “massive void” in Australian cricket.

Rod Marsh was added to the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009 “I, along with countless other people in Australia, grew up hearing the stories of him as a fearless and tough cricketer,” Cummins said.

“His swashbuckling batting and his brilliance behind the stumps over more than a decade made him one of the all-time greats of our sport, not just in Australia, but globally.”

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell, who played alongside Marsh, described

him as “the spiritual leader of the group”, while Ian Chappell said “anybody who met him enjoyed his company”.

Former Australia keeper Gilchrist said he was “stunned,” adding: “I thought he was invincible.

He was my absolute idol and hero and inspiration as to why I pursued what I did.

The impact he had on my life is profound.”

Ex-Australia all-rounder Shane Watson also paid

tribute, stating he “wouldn’t be the person I am today if it wasn’t for Rod and his amazing skill to know how to get the best out of every young cricketer”.

Ex-England bowler Chris Tremlett described Marsh as “a great man who helped guide me and many others on the right path in my younger years and taught me what it takes to play international cricket”.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who is a keen cricket fan, wrote on Twitter that Marsh would be remembered as “one of Australia’s greatest-ever Test cricket players”.

“As a kid he was my favourite player. He was a fierce competitor and a fine sportsman who valued what the game stood for,” Morrison added.

Chelsea end eventful week with win at Burnley …fans sing Roman Abramovich’s name

CHELSEA supporters may have used the occasion to serenade oligarch owner Roman Abramovich, as his ownership of the club stutters towards an inevitable conclusion, but that controversy overshadowed an afternoon of major positives for their manager, Thomas Tuchel.

The German coach rightly condemned his fans for their decision to chant the name of their outgoing owner during a minute of applause designed to show solidarity for Ukraine before kick-off.

And, not for the first time in recent days, it was hard not to feel sympathy for Tuchel as he wrestled with issues of geo-politics rather than being able to simply focus on what had been a devastating second-half performance at Turf Moor in which his team scored all four of their goals.

Even more encouragingly for him, it was the returning Reece James, starting a game for the first time since December 29 after recovering from a hamstring injury, who was pivotal in a spell of three goals in eight minutes early in the second half.

“You know, we missed him such a long time that we got used to it,” said Tuchel.

“Nine weeks, and we had 25 matches in that time, so

you’re constantly trying to find solutions.

“The team did find solutions as a team. We managed to win games and even a title in this period, but once he’s back and plays three times, from the beginning you see what you’ve been missing.

“Huge quality. How impressive and decisive he is.

In training and now even in games. These positions are very important if you play with this structure.

“It’s a bit the same on the left side. It puts things into perspective when you see what we missed. I’m very happy that he came back.”

There had been no hint of what was to come in a first half in which Burnley missed good chances of their own, but, after 47 minutes, James broke the deadlock.

Trevoh Chalobah’s pass found the wing-back in space and he twice checked past hapless defender Dwight McNeil, creating room for himself to finish into the far corner with an angled drive.

Just five minutes later, James was involved in a move that ended with Christian Pulisic drifting a cross over Connor Roberts and leaving the unmarked Kai Havertz to head in from close range.

And the win was certainly secured shortly after when

Guyana teams win bronze medal at Caribbean table tennis championships

GUYANA Men’s and Women’s teams finished with a bronze medal each at this year’s Senior Caribbean table tennis Championships which is ongoing in Havana, Cuba.

The male and female teams battled hard but went down to eventual champions Puerto Rico (male) and Cuba (female) respectively when the semi-finals of the events were held on Friday.

In the other Women’s semi-final, Dominican Republic had edged past Puerto Rico 3-2, while in the other male semi-finals, Cuba had defeated the Dominican Re-

public 3-1.

The losing semi-finals finished joint third.

GOOD BATTLE In Guyana’s women’s semi-final, Olympian Chelsea Edghill surged to a 3-1 win against Cuba’s Idalys Lovet (11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7), but Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Greaves fell to Daniela Fonseca and Karla Perez respectively.

Edghill then took on former Caribbean singles champion Fonseca and lost 3-0.

Earlier in the day, Guyana females got past Trinidad and Tobago 3-2. Edghill whipped Imani Edwards-Taylor 3-0

Stokes says he ‘felt he let team down’ in heavy Ashes defeat ENGLAND all-rounder Ben Stokes says he felt he “let the team down” in their heavy Ashes defeat in Australia.

The 30-year-old returned to action for the series in December after taking four months off to protect his mental well-being and rest an injured finger.

He claimed a total of just four wickets and only twice scored more than 50 runs as England lost the Ashes 4-0.

“The thing that grinds me the most, that hurts me the most is that I let a lot of other people down,” he said.

“One of my reflections on the tour as a whole was I personally felt that I let the team down, for more than just performances. I would have liked to be in better physical shape when I was in Australia.

“I never want to feel like that again because it was hard to take when you do sit down and reflect on things that don’t

Missing legends a plus, but Roach wary of existing threats

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – Marquee seamer Kemar Roach said yesterday the surprise omission of icons Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad had given West Indies an important boost ahead of their upcoming three-Test series against England but warned the tourists still carried a massive threat.

Anderson and Broad, the most decorated seamers in England history with 1 177 Test wickets between them, were both snubbed for the March 8-28 tour as England selectors revamped the squad following the recent Ashes disaster.

While Roach said their absence would leave “a hole” in the England attack, he underscored the danger still posed by the fast-bowling trio of Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes. “(Their omission was) quite surprising. I thought definitely both of them would be still involved but the decisions have been made from that end,” Roach told a media conference yesterday, ahead

Much of the responsibility will fall on Roach’s shoulders, the 33-year-old having already taken 231 wickets from 68 Tests to find himself eighth on the all-time list of West Indies wicket-takers in the longest format.

He was outstanding on England’s last tour of the Caribbean three years ago, claiming 18 wickets at just under 14 apiece, to help West Indies storm to a shock 2-1 win in the three-Test series.

And Roach, who has taken 50 wickets in 13 Tests against England overall, said he was already chomping at the bit for the upcoming battle.

“Obviously for me, England is our biggest series.

We play the most Test matches against England, having three (in each series),” Roach explained.

“At home you go with that confidence factor into the series and you want to perform well, especially against England. For me I’m always looking to go hard and obviously put my best performance out against the Pommes.”

He continued: “I always put my best foot forward for West Indies and as I said, playing against England is definitely one of the hallmarks of my career. It’s all about going out there, expressing yourself, being positive and taking it to the English.

MOUNT MAUNGANUI, New Zealand (CMC) – Stroke-maker Hayley Matthews believes West Indies’ shock win over New Zealand in Friday’s opener of the ICC Women’s World Cup has released some of the pressure on the Caribbean side, especially following adverse results in the pre-tournament warm-ups last week.

West Indies suffered heavy losses to Australia and India in two official warm-ups, failing to crack 200 on either occasion in pursuit of 250-plus totals, but pulled off a narrow three-run victory over New Zealand in a dramatic finish at Bay Oval.

With the hosts needing six runs from the last over in pursuit of 260, veteran all-rounder Deandra Dottin snatched two wickets and effected a run-out in a thrilling climax.

of their recent unflattering One-Day International form, but Matthews said the victory had allowed them to make a “statement”.

“It’s massive. I keep saying we’ve obviously come into this tournament a bit as underdogs playing under the radar and yeah, I think that’s really good for us,” said Matthews, whose Player-of-the-Match 119 formed the basis for West Indies’ victory.

“It’s helped to ease a bit of pressure and to make a statement like this first game is obviously massive and hopefully we can just carry this form moving forward into the rest of the tournament, and obviously we’ve got a pretty big first four games.

“Obviously (we’ve been) able to knock over New Zealand but if we can look to get some more wins early on in the competition, (it) is going to set us up in a really strong position.”

West Indies face a difficult opening fixture list with reigning champions England

next up on Wednesday followed by India three days later and then a clash with Australia on March 15.

The top four teams following the seven-match group stage will advance to the semi-finals, a stage West Indies have not reached since featuring in the final of the 2013 showpiece.

And Matthews warned that improvements were needed – especially in the field – if West Indies were to churn out more positive results.

“One hundred per cent I think anyone will say we were pretty bad in the field (against New Zealand),” she said.

“But at the same time … it just shows that we’ve got more to give. We’ve got more room for improvement. It’s just about really reflecting on what we did really well and what we didn’t do so well.

“We didn’t do fielding (well) and (we have) to improve that as much as we possibly can before the next game.”

West Indies’ preparation for the tournament was somewhat messed up, especially after the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 forced the hasty abandonment of last December’s qualifiers after they had played just one game.

Their only competitive action since then was a fourmatch series in Johannesburg last month but despite the 3-1 defeat, Matthews said the outing had been important.

“Obviously heading for qualifiers we were looking to use the opportunity to get some really good practice and with everything that happened we weren’t able to do so,” said the 23-year-old.

“At the same time, I do think we still had adequate preparation. Obviously heading to South Africa before we got here was really, really good. And we feel we’re in a really good space.

“Everyone’s playing the right cricket. I think we’re just picking the right time at the moment.”
