Sunshine Garden Centre aims to beautify gardens, spaces THE Sunshine Garden Centre is a new business that intends to pay keen attention to the emotional appeal of plants and the installation of decorative garden pavers to enhance and beautify surroundings.

This business was among dozens on display at the Providence National Stadium, East Bank Demerara, where UncappeD Marketplace was held. The two-day event which targeted Guyana’s agro-processing industry and other types of businesses, and which was organised by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), concluded on Sunday.

UncappeD Marketplace having returned this year following a two-year hiatus, attracted new businesses that were spawned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One such business was the Sunshine Garden Centre which according

In an interview with this publication, she said, “Farming and gardening has [sic] mostly been a family tradition and over the years my love for flowers, plants and their beauty just grew,

and during the pandemic there was more time to focus on planting and the gardening aspect along with the realizations that creating your own beautiful space is a wonderful thing.”

Thornhill said her tagline, “Where there is no sunshine, create your own,” motivated her to

create and invest in decorative garden pavers to also stimulate the participation of children, while beautifying any given space where memories of a lifetime are created.

“My mom once said to me, what are you going to do with all these plants? I said when I retire, I am going to open

a plant shop. So, she said, why do you have to wait until you retire? I said you know what mom, that is an excellent idea and there is no reason why I can’t do both. So, despite the challenges, when you love something it’s not considered work,” she explained to the Guyana Chronicle.

The businesswoman related that she is not simply selling plants or garden pavers, but rather a dream or experience of tranquility and the bliss

associated with beautifying spaces or gardens.

“Beauty is all around us, we need to appreciate it and give thanks,” she said before extending her appreciation to the GMSA for the UncappeD exhibition that provided the opportunity to showcase her small business.

Guyana is the epicentre of tolerance - says President Ali as Eid activities culminate with dinner at State House

PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali has described Guyana as the epicentre of tolerance that demonstrates

unity in diversity.

He said that Guyanese are humble, tolerant and strong and united in their

quest for peace and that the country is one “in which all of us are ready and willing to embrace development

The Imam explained that Muslims countrywide observe this occasion by praying just after sunrise. Everyone wears new clothes, greets each other ‘Eid Mubarak’ and exchanges sweets.

In some instances, he noted that people also give each other gifts and many partake in delicious meals.

This occasion, Khan said was very significant for Muslims as they celebrated the “festival of breaking fast.” Many also visit their family and friends for festivities.

Eid-ul-Fitr, he said is considered to be among the biggest festivals celebrated by Muslims and is considered to be a day dedicated to gratitude and charity.

The President, who took part in several activities on Monday’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, culminated the day’s events with a specially organised dinner for members of the religious community, representatives of the diplomatic corps and members of his Cabinet at State House.

During his brief speech, he spoke of his government’s development plans and drive to pursue its ‘One Guyana’ agenda.

“Our only desire [and] that of the government is for the upliftment of all the people of the country.

It is to ensure that we implement programmes and policies that will enhance humanity, that will bring people together—that will create love among each other.”

The President also spoke of humanity at the Eid Prayer held at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) ground earlier in the day, where he described Ramadan as a tool to promote humility, sacrifice,

He said that all of humanity is the same in the eyes of God Almighty, regardless of wealth or status.

After the prayer session at MYO in Georgetown, the President headed to Leonora, on the West Coast of Demerara, to take part in a similar activity where he spoke of love, family, and

equality.

The Head of State then led scores of residents to several Muslim homes in the community to participate in traditional houseto-house visits to indulge in sweet treats.

Press Freedom

THE interconnection between the media and democracy is undeniable. As a people still recovering from brazen attempts in 2020 to steal an election in favour of the APNU+AFC, Guyanese can appreciate, even more, the value of a vigilant media corps working around the clock to break the misinformation and disinformation campaigns which, if they had been left unchecked, would have propped up what remains one of the worst attempts by agents of the thencoalition government to stifle the will of the Guyanese people, suppress the statements of international observers to the detriment of Guyana’s international standing, and break down the integrity of key institutions -- the courts included.

UNESCO wrote in a 2021 report: “Journalists continue to

be victims of a range of repression tactics: non-lethal physical attacks, kidnapping, arbitrary detention, threats, harassment off-line and online, and retaliation against family members.

All of these attacks pose a considerable threat to journalists’ ability to perform their critical work and help serve people’s right to information.”

Although Guyana has not landed itself on the statistics for countries where journalists were killed in the line of duty, there are still other threats which media workers experience. Those who worked on the frontline of Guyana’s 2020 General and Regional Elections have been distastefully subjected to harassment by protesting supporters of the then-coalition government as it clutched aimlessly to some semblance of power.

Much has changed since that sordid affair. We have

come far from the few and far between press conferences held by Mr Granger during his presidency, a time when the executive appeared distant from public scrutiny. Since Dr Ali’s ascent to the presidency, his government’s heightened level of exposure to the media and public engagement, necessary for any properly functioning governance structure, leaves room for no guessing game about the Guyana vision, plans, and execution. Whether through press conferences, public statements, social media postings and the like, access to publicly elected officials has been paramount.

There is no doubt that President Ali administration’s approach to media engagement has been intentional.

Essentially so, since the media is an equal partner in national development, communicating not only the policies and pro-

grammes of the government but equally providing feedback from the people directly, or feedback from their elected representatives in the legislative minority.

This year’s World Press Freedom Day is being observed under the theme, “Journalism Under Digital Siege” with Guyana adopting the sub-theme, “Partnerships in Communication for Development (C4D).” Already, government has supported the further training of media workers, and the entry of new media workers through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) scholarship programme, and the Guyana Media and Communications Academy, a partnership with globally recognised, US-based online learning platform, COURSERA. Consolidating its commitment globally, Guyana in 2021 joined the Media Freedom Co-

alition, which is described on its website as a collaboration of 52 countries working to advance media freedom at home and abroad through highlighting and condemning instances of threats against journalists, and building the mechanisms to protect media freedoms around the world. Additionally, Guyana has signed on to the 1994 Chapultepec Declaration at the OAS which acknowledges, among other things, that: “A free press enables societies to resolve their conflicts, promote their well-being and protect their liberty. No law or act of government may limit freedom of expression or of the press, whatever the medium.”

The Cooperative Republic is also a party to the 1991 Declaration of Windhoek, acknowledging that “The establishment, maintenance and fostering of an independent, pluralistic and free press is es-

sential to the development and maintenance of democracy in a nation, and for economic development.”

The state of Guyana’s media corps has considerably improved, and more and more, with support from the Dr Ali administration, stakeholders are experiencing a supportive climate for Article 46 of Guyana’s constitution, which provides: “Except with his own consent, no person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, that is to say, freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to receive ideas and information without interference, freedom to communicate ideas and information without interference and freedom from interference with his or her correspondence.”

Guyanese Muslims observe Eid in New York

THE large Guyanese Muslim community in New York observed the Eid-ul-Fitr festival with traditional prayers at masjids across the city on Monday morning. Eid culminates the month- long, dawn-to-dusk fasting period of Ramadan that commenced on April 2. Heavy rain showers and dark clouds above did not deter attendance at the masjids, which were packed to capacity for the festival that began with prayers from the Holy Koran. Attendees overflowed from inside of the masjid onto the sidewalks of streets.

The police facilitated the worshippers with flashing police vehicles parked in front of, or near masjids.

Islam was transplanted in New York among the West Indian community by Guyanese and Trinidadians since the late 1960s. Muslims of varied nationalities cooperated in practising and in-

Indo-Caribbean Muslims and Hindus also collaborated with practising their faiths.

They rented and shared spaces at hotels and apart-

ments for the observance of their religious festivals until such time that they acquired their own buildings that were transformed into temples and masjids. Guyanese and each

nationality or Islamic sect has had its own masjid; worshippers tend to patronise their own group masjid. Guyanese and Trinidadian Muslims tend to collaborate in masjid establishment. Non-West Indians also patronise Guyanese masjids. And West Indian Muslims tend to patronise masjids of other nationalities where Guyanese masjids are not available in their communities. There are a dozen Indo Guyanese masjids in the greater Richmond Hill area and several more in other parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and Bronx to cater for the spiritual needs of the large Guyanese community in the New York environs. Tens of thousands of Guyanese Muslims are settled in the New York metro area. During Ramadan, masjids and jamaats held nightly services for breaking of the daytime fast with dates and delicious snacks or full meals.

For Eid, worshippers were immaculately dressed with traditional garb – very

colourful kurtha pajama and sherwani for males, shalwar, choli, and lehenga for females. Old, young, children, strong, weak, disabled were all well dressed for the occasion -- prayers and giving of alms to the poor, the masjids, imams or meiji, muezzin, and other Islamic activities.

At the conclusion of prayers, there was much enthusiasm among the flock as they embraced or hugged each other, exchanged greetings, and shared gifts. Sawine or vermicelli (liquid and cake), flour cake, pastries, dates, mithai, sirni, gulab jamun and other sweets and foods were distributed to the gathering.

There was much euphoria and fervour and laughter as they snacked.

Charitable contributions or zakats were given to the less fortunate. Boxes were placed in front of the gathering for zakats with worshippers giving generously. Tents were constructed outside of masjids to accommodate the large gathering. Celebrants

embraced each other and offer “Eid Mubarak” greetings.

Eid is among the most important days for Muslims.

It is a school holiday for New York City and some private schools. The city also accords official recognition with an excused parking holiday.

Muslim businesses were also closed for the day. Several Muslim owned-businesses sponsored gifts and or snacks for distribution at masjids.

Bakewell on Liberty Avenue, half a block from the Al Abidin Masjid distributed coffee, dates, pastries, and atar to passersby on the occasion of Eid. For Eid, families planned to host luncheons and dinners. Catering halls were reserved for festivities.

For the Eid festival, qawalis and qaseedas were aired on the Pradeep Kumar (Arsalan) TV show.

For the entire month of Ramadan, he hosted special programmes in the morning before dawn. Politicians conveyed Eid greetings to the Muslim community.

World Press Freedom in 2022 Part 1: Journalism Under Digital Siege!

By Earl Bousquet THE theme for World Press Freedom Day 2022 is ‘Journalism Under Digital Siege’ – a most appropriate one that would have been chosen long before the war in Ukraine but the accuracy of which is most aptly portrayed in how the world views what’s already become but only not yet declared the Third World War. The third world war to start in Europe is very different, being fought in air as much as on the ground in a battle for more minds than lives.

During World War I (19141918), news had to come by outside the theatres of conflict and the immediate European bloc and World War II (19391945) was slightly better, with the English-speaking Caribbean and world fed mainly by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

But even so, it took 24 hours for the BBC World News to be broadcast in the British West Indies (BWI), where radios were a luxury and people gathered outside homes with receivers to hear ‘The BBC News’.

Not so today with the third war of global proportions being played out in Europe and already affecting the rest of the entire world in ways no other has, by way of effects on availability and costs of food and fuel driven by a supply chain crisis in the midst of the continuing war in 2022 against COVID-19.

Today, no one can escape the Ukraine war, which is beamed 24/7 across all media platforms and through all digital devices.

In the age of The Internet of Things when media monopoly is more concentrated than ever imagined, business competition has given way to digital cooperation in ensuring similarity of messaging, with no distinguishing between BBC and CNN reports on what’s ‘Happening Now!’ in Ukraine, transmitted digitally by-the-minute.

RT (Russia Today) has been banned across Europe,

as is Novosti and every other international Russian broadcaster, just as CNN, BBC and Cold War media entities like Radio Free Europe have been banned from Russia’s airwaves.

Indeed, the digital media war looks and sounds hotter than the battles in Eastern Ukraine and all is being done by one side to explain why the other’s wrong, the proUkraine side heaping all the blame on Moscow and vice versa in a new propaganda offensive that’s more offensive to traditional notions of Press Freedom than ever.

The East and West political definitions of global warfare have returned by way of ‘Us and Them’, the pro-Ukraine sides justifying support for a proxy war by arguing that the world is in danger and therefore in need of saving by investing in keeping the war going while sobbing about loss of life.

With wars today more reflecting battles for minds than fights for freedom, traditional proponents and defenders of Press Freedom have redefined it to now mean freedom to take sides in reporting and blanking-out the other side, as is the case with the digital war over the Ukraine war.

Caribbean people, thousands of miles away across The Atlantic, have no choice but to see and hear one side and expected to believe only what they see and hear, as Caribbean Community (CARICOM) governments come under pressure to take sides in a war they had nothing to do with but which is already affecting the region in more serious ways than the region’s press has been able or willing to address, far less report on.

The Ukraine war is unfolding before our very eyes, but only with and through the selected digital images transmitted faster than the speed of light to our screens and through the various devices that keep us informed online.

The region’s media has blinded itself to crystal-clear evidence of the Ukraine war having split the usually united

CARICOM region down the middle in related votes at the United Nations (UN) while efforts continue at all levels to influence individual governments to abandon the traditional regional approach of ‘non-interference’ and force CARICOM to take a side on the basis of a majority vote instead of respecting the traditional policy of unanimity.

The numbers game is taking precedence over everything else as CARICOM member states find themselves torn between the preference for unanimity and membership of regional and international groupings more vulnerable to external political pressure than the CARICOM Secretariat, with one side in the battle over Ukraine openly canvassing CARICOM collectively and individually – and succeeding in sowing division from without and within.

Just like in Europe, some Caribbean digital media service providers have scrapped RT while embracing BBC and CNN wholeheartedly and wholesale, but fortunately, media houses have not started banning reports that challenge the prevailing narrative, if only because those who have doubts about the effects of today’s digital one-sided flows of propaganda through information continue to mark time for fear of censorship or being branded.

Propaganda wars have accompanied every war, big or small and that over Ukraine is no different, except that the one-sided narrative is so overwhelming that respected presenters on BBC and CNN have come to the point of repeatedly describing leaders as ‘liars’ and fanning the flames of war as briskly as they’ve promoted peace in the past.

Seasoned observers who’ve seen it all before (even in lesser terms) quietly or silently recall the roles of psychological warfare tactics before, during and after the Grenada Revolution or in the later actions in and against Nicaragua and Bolivia, and/ or the continuing propaganda wars against Cuba and Ven-

ezuela and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or the continuing propaganda offensive against Iran.

But today’s Caribbean media crop, being less interested in reporting on matters

beyond borders, has opted to go with the flow, instead of assuming the responsibility for reading between the lines for those without tinted spectacles seeking clear views on the clouded issues

wrapped-up in shiny digital media images, in the war for minds that characterises global reporting on the war in Ukraine.

Free media the hallmark of a democratic society - GPA, US, UK, Canada and EU underscore in messages to mark World Press Freedom Day

THE Guyana Press Association (GPA) has urged journalists and media houses to be on the alert and safeguard against cybersecurity threats in its message to mark World Press Freedom Day, which is being observed this year under the theme, “Journalism under Digital Siege”.

“This theme is apt because of the emergence of more Online-based media, and the transition to or convergence of conventional media to social media platforms,” the GPA said in a release.

Undoubtedly, this would pose threats to their Information Technology (IT) systems, such as costly and destructive intrusions by Ransomware and Spyware.

“Ultimately, this affects the public at large which the media serves, and thus can affect the

freedom of expression which is a fundamental human right,” the GPA said.

The GPA also shared that the Cybercrime Act criminalises the transmission of certain information by electronic means, and this, it contends, is a matter of concern.

The local media watchdog also urged journalists to be wary of what they download, and the sources from which they download and other electronic devices, as such acts can potentially install spyware that can access their information and contacts.

“Additionally, media houses should, of necessity, take the requisite action to minimise the surveillance and monitoring of their work in violation of the freedom to receive and impart ideas,” the GPA said.

Meanwhile, the USA, Brit-

ain, Canada and the European Union (ABCEU), in a joint press statement, said World Press Freedom Day gives the opportunity to acknowledge the significant work of journalists, to remind of the fundamental principles of press freedom, and assess the current state of press freedom locally and around the world.

CORNERSTONE The ABCEU underscored that media freedom is a cornerstone of democratic societies, and essential to the protection of human rights, fundamental freedoms and universal values anchored in the Universal Declaration for Human Rights.

The media, the joint statement noted, plays an essential role in societies, defending and advancing the truth, and amplifying the voices of the public by sharing stories authentically.

The ABCEU observed that journalists have been at the forefront in times of danger in Guyana, including during incidents such as fires and flooding, and they tell the heartbreaking stories of women and families who have been victims of domestic violence.

Members of the media are a key source of information on national topics such as Guyana’s rapid development, while at the same time holding government, opposition, parliamentarians and others accountable.

“Press attention to accountability has never been more important in Guyana, with a historically large revenue stream entering government coffers, and a regularly stated intent to use those resources for a development agenda that cuts across all regions and races. There is also a larger principle at stake that strong democracies require free information flow in the public marketplace of opinions and ideas. As inconvenient as criticism can be to government officials and other leaders,

it is an essential part of the democratic cacophony,” the ABCEU said.

They noted that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the media helped to keep societies updated about developments with the pandemic, to learn of best practices to prevent the spread of the virus and, importantly, to counter false or misleading information.

and members of the LGBTQ community are often victims of inappropriate comments and sexual harassment, and that must end,” said the ABCEU in the joint statement.

At a time where journalists are increasingly using a digital space, the ABCEU said it is clear that bold action is needed from governments to acknowledge and address the evolving media environment. As the media continues to transform locally, the ABCEU noted that the presence and voice of the Guyana Press Association is even more important.

Once they [notice] CCTV, it gives them a 50/50 chance if to commit or not to commit,” he said during a recent interview with the police force’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU).

“And we’ve been trying to push with our stakeholders, our business community on ways on how they can mitigate those incidents,” he added.

Noting that footage from CCTV cameras have resulted in numerous arrests by the Guyana Police Force, the commander said: “It has been successful. We have seen that a number of our incidents that occurred for the year so far, that with the help of CCTVs we have been able to solve those incidents. A number of persons have been arrested because of that.”

He continued: “Not only with the help of those private CCTVs but our

own, the CCTV camera room at Turkeyen command centre.”

He noted that the use of more technology throughout his division will create a safer and more secure environment for citizens.

“That is why we’re trying to push across the corridor, the use of more technology, in terms [of] creating that atmosphere for better physical security, because a number persons may complain that they want to see the police here or want to see the police there, but the policeman and woman cannot be in one area all the time,” Senior Superintendent Pareshram said.

“That is why we’re trying to enter into this partnership to give them the tips on ways they can improve the security, [while] at the same time having that closer collaboration with the police,” he added.

Further, the commander noted that they have been encouraging persons to report suspicious activities. “We have been trying to push that if you see anything report it, because once you report it and we respond to it, it may deter a lot of things,” he said before adding, “It may not be positive in the sense of a crime, those perpetrators or those suspected individuals may be there to commit a crime, but once you report

hesitate to report an incident or suspicious activities which can also help to deter crime.

Additionally, he encouraged persons to utilise the 911 reporting system and respective police station

numbers when there are issues that the police can assist in solving.

Offshore Technology Conference expected to boost investments in Guyana - signing of several MoUs on the cards

CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of Go-Invest Dr. Peter Ramsaroop has noted that several new business relationships vital to Guyana’s offshore development are expected to be formed at the 2022 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), the largest oil-and-gas sector trade show in the world.

The four-day event, which ends on Thursday, May 5, is being held in Houston, Texas, at the

NRG Stadium, and is expected to provide the opportunity for local companies to develop business relationships and tap into emerging regions that are vital to offshore development.

The OTC is the world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources, and displays leading-edge technology for offshore drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection.

The event is sponsored by

13 industry organisations and societies which work cooperatively to develop the technical programme.

Participation at the OTC allows for Guyanese businesses to learn, and seek partners in pursuit of emerging opportunities in the country. Participation will help Guyana bring more supply chain opportunities to its shores.

Dr. Ramsaroop, according to a press release, said that at the conference Guyana is not hitching on the bandwagon of the oil and gas sector alone, but will also be marketing its traditional sectors: agriculture, tourism, ICT, manufacturing and services.

This year marks Guyana’s third time participating at the conference, and a few new companies will be representing an array of diversified sectors.

of the Guyana booths at the conference.

Minister Bharrat will be delivering a keynote address on the topic: Guyana: Perspectives on energy policy at the James A. Baker III Hall, Rice University today. Later in the day, he will be part of the “Around the World” Series Panel Discussion on Promoting Investment for Guyana’s Petroleum Sector Through Beneficial Local Content Goals: Maximizing Business Opportunities and Profitability”.

Six men benefit from Drug-Treatment Court

SINCE its establishment in 2019, six men have benefitted from the programme being offered by the first adult Drug Treatment Court (DTC) which is located at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The pilot programme was launched on October 21, 2019, and gives offenders a choice outside of the traditional court proceedings, to help them get the treatment needed to overcome their addiction and be productive members of society.

It was made possible with the aid of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, in collaboration with the Organisation of American States Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (OAS-CICAD), and the National Anti-Narcotics Agency.

Additionally, the programme helps with areas such as prison overcrowding and reducing recidivism, while helping to curb drug addiction in Guyana.

The court is currently presided over by Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse and Magistrate Rhondel Weever.

According to the statistics

provided by the Supreme Court of Judicature from the time of the launch up to March 2022, 15 males between the ages of 18 to 60 years old formally applied to participate in the programme.

However, only six were accepted, since the others did not meet the criteria.

Marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription medication were their illicit substances of choice.

Two participants are currently receiving outpatient treatment, while the others are receiving residential treatment.

According to a statement from the Supreme Court of Judicature, the programme was just about to gain traction when it was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The court’s operation was suspended in March 2020, but was later resumed virtually.

Now, with restrictions lifted by the government, in-person hearings, home visits and counselling have resumed.

was referred to the drug court after he appeared before a city magistrate for stealing a pressure washer. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

He suffered from cocaine addiction and stole the pressure washer to aid his drug habit. He had also been previously convicted for a similar offence.

At the launching of the DTC in 2019, the Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag), Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, had said that once an offender satisfies the eligibility requirements, his/her sentence would be deferred while he/ she participated in the programme.

She said that participants who complete the programme may receive a light sentence

such as a fine or community service, have their criminal charge dismissed or have no conviction recorded.

Offenders are given an opportunity to voluntarily enter the court programme and undergo a four-phase treatment plan, supervised by treatment providers and a magistrate.

Participants are rewarded for maintaining their treatment plans and sanctioned for failure to meet their obligations.

Upon successful completion of the programme, there is a graduation ceremony, by which time the participants would have been rehabilitated and prepared for reintegration into their communities, where they could meaningfully contribute to society.

However, the Chancellor had warned that if a participant fails to complete the programme that person will be processed as normal in the traditional criminal justice system.

According to her, the programme requires a lot of commitment from partici-

pants and dedicated case supervision from the drug-treatment court team.

It may require participation for many months to help the person maintain longterm recovery strategies.

Offenders are treated with random drug tests to ensure that they stay clean. Participants must attend court frequently, so they can be monitored while being encouraged to make and maintain their recovery.

The magistrate, state prosecutor, defence attorney, probation officer, police officer, treatment provider, and mental health specialists work together with each participant to seek solutions for his or her benefit.

Woman homeless after fire guts West Ruimveldt residence

SHABIKIE Fernandes is now counting her losses after a fire believed to be electrical in origin completely destroyed her Lot 188 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme home on Monday.

A press release from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) noted that ranks received a call about the fire around 04:47hrs, and three fire tenders responded immediately.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed that the twostorey wooden and concrete house was engulfed in flames.

As a result of the fire, the uninsured building and its contents were destroyed leaving the woman homeless.

According to the GFS, the purported cause of the fire is faulty electrical

wiring which resulted in the sparking, igniting, and spreading of the flames to nearby combustibles.

Also affected by the blaze was a two-storey wooden and concrete building located next door. It is owned and occupied by Rudolph Sam and his family of three.

Sam’s AC unit was slightly damaged along with 10 meters of PVC guttering on the northern side of his premises, due to the radiated heat from the Fernandes’ home.

“The Guyana Fire Service continues to encourage citizens to equip their homes with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers and to adhere to safety measures in order to protect their homes and loved ones from fire emergencies,” the release added.

Clubs receive donation of cricket gear from BCB/Cricket Kindness Project

… Schools to benefit shortly

THE Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) as part of its ongoing cricket developmental programme

last weekend handed over a large amount of cricket gear to several clubs in the Ancient County under it’s Cricket Kindness Project.

The presentation was done during the BCB gala Brian Ramphal Awards Ceremony at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Centre in Rose Hall Town. The presentation was done by cricket legends Sir Andy Roberts and Roland Butcher, who both serves as ambassadors for the England based cricket charity organization Cricket Kindness.

President of BCB, Hilbert Foster disclosed that in late 2020, he was approached by Butcher, who wanted his blessings to submit the BCB name to

Ms. Tamara J. Lowe of Cricket Kindness for a donation of cricket gear.

Foster readily agreed and later submitted a comprehensive project document to Ms. Lowe.

Cricket Kindness agreed to assist the county but the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic slowed down plans but a shipment eventually left England in late 2021.

The shipment included a large collection of bats, batting pads, batting gloves, wicket keeping pads, wicket keeping gloves, cricket boots, uniforms among others.

The BCB several weeks ago, assisted seventy-two youth cricketers with personal gear via a transparent raffle system.

The players were selected

by their respective clubs and sub- associations.

Among the clubs benefitting from the donations were Achievers, Cotton Tree, Mt. Sinai, Tucber Park, Rose Hall Canje, Guymine, Scottsburg, Radha Krishna and Skeldon. Among the items donated were bats, batting pads, helmets, batting gloves, thigh pads and fore arm guards.

Cricket Kindness is based in England and is the brainchild of Australia born Tamara Lowe, a passionate lover of the game. The Charity group receives donation of gear from across England and then it is shipped to countries in the Caribbean like Barbados, Antigua and St. Kitts.

This is the first time

that Guyana has benefitted. Foster expressed the BCB gratitude to Ms. Lowe and her band of sports ambassadors which includes Chris Lewis, Roland Butcher, Sir Andy Roberts, Sir Richie Richardson and Sir Vivian Richards.

Special thanks was also made to Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jnr and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports for their assistance in obtaining duty free concessions from the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The BCB also expressed thanks to the Management of ECU Worldwide for shipping the gear from England to Guyana free of cost and also to Carl Griffith of Laparkan.

"No [the tie is not over], we know that. It's half-time.

In the best possible way, we ignore the result from the first game," Klopp told his pre-match press conference.

"As if it was a cup tie with only one leg and it would be decided in Villarreal, we will try to win there, that's what we want to try, knowing that they will go with all they have, that was clear with all the things Unai said after the game.

"It will be another tough one, but it's fine, the Champions League semi-final should be tough. We never expected it to be easy and this will not be easy. We played a good game at home, and we had better play a good game there as well.

"The Champions League semi-final is the second-most important game you can play [after the final]. That's why whatever happened in the last few weeks is not important.

"You never know if you will reach the semi-final again, if you will ever have another chance to go to the final, you never know. We have an exceptional team here, but nothing is taken for granted, you better treat it carefully and be ready, and

we will be ready."

Liverpool have won on all five of their Champions League road trips this season. Should Klopp's side win in Spain, they would have played the most away games while maintaining a 100 per cent record by any team in a single European Cup/Champions League campaign.

With the Reds on a 13-match unbeaten streak on their travels in all competitions, Klopp highlighted the importance of having extra options available in his squad compared to previous seasons.

"In general, our last periods of the season are pretty intense, because the Premier League is so difficult," Klopp added.

"It helps that we know, historically we are in the best possible shape [physically], where we don't have to push the boys through like we did in 2018, where we arrived at the final [a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid] pretty much on three wheels, with players coming back from injury and these kinds of things.

"We have to make sure we can make changes here and there and keep them all in rhythm, and to win the football games, that's what it's about."

Today will also see midfielder Thiago Alcantara return to Spain after an outstanding first-leg display in which he attempted over 100 passes, and Klopp said the in-form 31-year-old would start for any team in world football.

"When Thiago is in the shape he is in now, he would play in each team in the world, and he would perform for Spain as well," he added.

"He had problems when he arrived here, he got injured, and Spain obviously has a lot of options in midfield because it's an incredibly talented football team.

"But in the shape he's in at the moment he would play for each national team, and not only play in it, he would probably be the outstanding performer.

"Every person needs to be fit and to gain rhythm and then he can show his best football. If he's in the right place physically, he will show everyone how good he is." (Yahoo Sport)

FIFA sanctions six African FAs but no replays

By Nick Cavell FIFA has sanctioned six African football associations following March's 2022 World Cup play-off matches but not ordered the replays requested by Algeria and Egypt.

Instead Senegal, Nigeria and DR Congo have all been ordered to play one match behind closed doors as well as being fined.

Algeria, Egypt and Morocco have all been handed financial fines by football's world governing body.

The list of decisions published by FIFA does not include any instructions for any replays or overturning of results.

Algeria had lodged a demand with FIFA for a replay of their second-leg loss to visiting Cameroon that saw the Desert Foxes eliminated on the away goals rule.

were unhappy with several decisions made by Gambian referee Bakary Gassama.

Instead the only sanction issued by FiIFA was a $3,000 fine to Algeria for "order and security at matches (throwing of objects and lighting of fireworks)".

Nigeria, who were also knocked out on away goals,

were fined $154,000 and must play one match without supporters after their fans invaded the pitch following their second leg in Abuja against Ghana.

Senegal must also play one game behind closed doors and pay a fine of $180,000 after they too were found in breach of Fifa's disciplinary code in their second-leg win over Egypt that saw the Teranga Lions qualify for the World Cup. FIFA pointed to several issues at the match: "Failure to implement existing safety rules and failure to ensure that law and order are maintained in the stadium, invasion of the field of play, throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, use of laser pointers and use of objects to transmit a message that is not appropriate for a sports events - offensive banner."

Egypt had requested a replay of the game after making a complaint to Fifa pointing to several of the

issues above as a basis for the demand.

Meanwhile the Egypt Football Association were fined $6,000 after the referee in the second leg in Dakar cautioned six individuals on the Pharaohs squad.

DR Congo will also have to play a match with-

out spectators after a pitch invasion following their first-leg draw with Morocco and they will also pay a fine of $123,000.

There was a further fine of $5,000 for DR Congo for the "throwing of objects" during the second leg of the play-off, which they lost 4-1

in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Morocco themselves have to pay $30,000 for the "lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects and blocked stairways" at the second leg game at the Mohamed V stadium in Casablanca.

UEFA extends ban on Russia’s national and club sides into next season Russia will remain frozen out of international football for the foreseeable future after UEFA extended its ban on its national and club sides competing in continental competition into next season and dismissed bids to host either Euro 2028 or Euro 2032.

Russia and its clubs have been suspended by both the European governing body and global counterpart FIFA since February following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s Champions League exclusion means the cinch Premiership champions in Scotland will qualify directly for the group stages regardless of who wins this year’s tournament – a scenario which appeared likely as only Villarreal, 2-0 down to Liverpool going into the semi-final second leg, could prevent it.

Meanwhile the United Kingdom and Ireland have seen one of the two rivals to their joint bid to host Euro 2028 removed, even if the Russian proposal was not being taken seriously.

Monday’s announcement from UEFA means Russia’s men’s team will not take part in the Nations League which begins in June, and will automatically face relegation from

League B. The women’s team will also be barred from Euro 2022 in England and will be replaced by Portugal, the team Russia beat in the qualifying play-offs. Portugal will go into Group C to face Holland, Sweden and Switzerland.

Russia will also be barred from playing any further matches in qualifying for either the Women’s World Cup in 2023 or the 2023 European Under-21 Championships, with their results to this point declared null and void. Russia had already been excluded from the qualifying play-offs for this year’s World Cup. No Russian teams will be eligible to play in European competition next season, barring them from the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, Women’s Champions League and UEFA Youth League.

Zenit St Petersburg have been crowned Russian champions but UEFA published an updated qualifying process which shows the cinch Premiership champions will go directly into the competition’s group stages, bypassing the

qualifying play-off.

Scotland’s second-placed side will go into the third round of qualifying rather than the second.

In practical terms that is unlikely to change much, however, given it was already due to happen if either Manchester City, Liverpool or Real Madrid win the trophy and qualify directly via the league.

The bids submitted to host either Euro 2028 or 2032 have been dismissed, with UEFA’s executive committee citing Article 16.02 of the regulations which states that “each bidder shall ensure that it does not act in a manner that could bring UEFA, the UEFA final or UEFA final phase, any other bidder (or any employee, officer or representative of any of the foregoing), the bidding procedure or European football into disrepute.”

Russia, along with Turkey, was one of two rival bids to that of the UK and Ireland to host Euro 2028, but one that had been met with derision given it was launched after the Football Union of Russia had been suspended.

Russia had also rivalled Italy’s bid for the 2032 edition. ussia had been due to face Poland in a World Cup

qualifier in March, but were prevented from playing after their suspension, with Poland instead advancing to the final where they beat Sweden 2-0.

Spartak Moscow, the last remaining Russian club in European competition this

season, were kicked out of the Europa League and UEFA terminated its sponsorship deal with Russian energy company Gazprom.

The Champions League final, which was originally due to be played in St Peters-

burg on May 28, was moved to Paris.

Russia launched an appeal against its previous suspension which is due to be heard at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, though no date has yet been fixed.

Albert wins Banks/Smirnoff Vodka golf tournament ROHAN Albert registered a net score of 68 to win the Banks/Smirnoff Vodka golf tournament which was held over the weekend at the Lusignan Golf Club.

The medal play format 18-hole competition had a total of 40 golfers competing.

In the end, it was the 29-year-old Albert, who surged to a gross score of 90, playing with a 22 handicap.

After a rough start, he was able to eliminate unnecessary errors to finish with a back nine of 42.

Of his four pars, three of them were scored in the back nine.

Meanwhile, Miguel Yunis, Videsh Persaud, George Bulkan and Kasim Khan recorded the second-best score of net 69, forcing the countback method to be used in determining the official positions.

Farah finishes second to club runner in first race in 11 months Mo Farah was surprisingly beaten by club runner Ellis Cross at the Vitality London 10,000 on his return to competition after an 11-month absence.

The four-time Olympic champion, 39, was unable to out-kick Cross, who won by four seconds in 28 minutes 40 seconds.

Before the race, Farah said it would not "make any sense" to keep racing if he could not compete at the top level.

"I have beaten somebody who is like an idol," Cross, who represents Aldershot,

'Scooby' reasserts dominance at Meet 2 of Arrowhead League ‒ Gibbons continues stranglehold on women’s Javelin

DEVAUN Barrington aka ‘Scooby’ put the nation on notice as to who is the best 800 metres athlete in the country by outsprinting his competition in the final 300 metres of the event on Sunday during meet 2 of the Arrowhead League at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

The race was hotly contested from start to finish with Barrington putting on the burners in the final 300 metres to outsprint the likes of Nicholas Daw, Courtley Bobb and Daniel Melville is what could be deemed at the performance of the day that ended in a time of 1:55.84s.

Daw finished second in 1:56.68s while Bobb was third in 1:57.48s. Melville narrowly missed the podium with a time of 1:58.26s to

finish fourth.

Meanwhile, the shock of the day happened when top sprinter Keliza Smith false started in the women’s 100 metres final, giving way to a comfortable win for Ruth Sanmoogan in 11.99s. Karese Lloyd finished second in 12.07s while Natrena Hooper finished third in 12.25s.

Nevertheless, Hooper won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.80 metres.

2022 Carifta 400m silver medalist picked up where she left off at the Carifta Games and clocked 55.39s to take an easy win in the women’s 400 metres. Analissa Redmond finished second in 59.22 second while veteran sprinter Alisha Fortune finished third in 57.09s.

However, the most dom-

inant performance of the day went to Carifta gold medalist Anisha Gibbons throwing 42.69 metres to win the event easily over Stacy Wilson with a throw of 27.95 metres. Nariann king was third with a throw of 24.45 metres.

The men’s 200 metres was won by Shamer Horatio in a time of 21.50s with top sprinter Akeem Stewart pulling out of the race with a slight lower leg niggle. Noelex Holder finished second in 21.76s while Revon Williams was third in 22.06s.

Carl Williams won the men’s long jump in 7.29 metres while Joshua Jones won the men’s discus throw in 38.05 metres to close out the day’s action.

Jamaica, Dom Rep advance to quarter-finals following victories over Cuba and Haiti THE Round of 16 of the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in the Dominican Republic finished on Sunday with another four teams advancing to the quarterfinal round.

One of the big winners of the day was the host nation Dominican Republic.

In what is their first-ever CWU17, the Caribbean side is now through to the final eight after posting a 2-0 win over neighbours Haiti at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal.

The decisive scores came shortly before halftime, with two goals in the span of three minutes.

Maria Torreira broke the deadlock in the 39’ to make it 1-0, before the lead was doubled for good, 2-0, in the 42’ by Julia Jimenez.

The first game of the day at the Estadio Panamericano saw El Salvador march to a commanding 10-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis.

AMERICAN teen sprint sensation Erriyon Knighton has left the athletics world gobsmacked after clinching an incredible piece of history that's sparked more comparisons with Usain Bolt.

The 18-year-old once again lowered Bolt's junior world record and beat his own U/20 world mark of 19.84sec in a scorching run at the Baton Rouge meet in the United States on Saturday.

Knighton blitzed the field to run home first in a staggering 19.49 seconds, setting

the fourth fastest time in the history of the event in the process.

Knighton will have his sights set on the world outdoor championships in Eugene, Oregon, (July 15-24) provided he comes though the qualifiers (June 23-26) at the same venue.

The American made headlines around the world last year when he ran an astonishing 19.88 to break Jamaican Olympic legend Bolt's 19.93 world junior record.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) – Experienced sports administrator Diane Henderson has become the first female president of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC).

In the historic virtual election held at the TTOC’s 75th Annual General Meeting, Henderson won 70 per cent of the vote – 24 votes to the 10 secured by her opponent Rowena Williams, who is one of three new vice-presidents. Henderson succeeds Brian Lewis as TTOC boss.

“Thank you to the general council for entrusting me in leading the TTOC and taking on this new mantle. I am stoked and thrilled in demonstrating my leadership abilities to carry the organization into the new world of sport, innovation and commercialism,” said Henderson, who will also serve as President of the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Sand and Beach Games Association (TTSBGA).

“It would be remiss of me not to mention my predecessor, Mr. Brian Lewis, for his unstinting dedication and commitment to the TTOC/TTCGA/TTSBGA. Nothing has gone unnoticed. Thanks also to everyone who supported me throughout my sporting and other careers leading to this occasion. I look forward to working with each and every one of you, especially the new Executive Board,” added the TTOC’s 11th president.

The TTOC said Henderson has contributed significantly to sports governance, athlete welfare, strategic planning and sports mediation.

Diane Henderson, the first female to be elected TTOC president

she has been a key proponent for the continued push for education in sport in Trinidad and Tobago.

Henderson has a history of working in sports management, being the first female on the executive board of the National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad and Tobago (NAAA).

She is also the current chairperson of the Trinidad and Tobago Marathon Committee where she has been responsible for the final decision-making on event coordination, developing race portals, social media upkeep, website coordination and private sector fundraising.
