$800M needed to address flooding …Gov't to apply for emergency funding from Contingency Fund – exploring mechanism for distribution of assistance to persons in affected regions

A meeting of the National Emergency Operation Centre was convened late Tuesday afternoon to address the recent spring tides and at a briefing, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson revealed that the government plans to apply for emergency funds through the Contingency Fund.

During September and before the recent spring tides, the Ministry of Finance had approved $460M for emergency works at Mahaicony, which is now one of the hardest-hit areas by the current spring tides.

Under this sum, two contracts were awarded to supply 10,000 tonnes of boulders.

Another application will be

made to source funding from the Contingency Fund to further address the needs of residents in Mahaicony, particularly between Dantzig to Fairfield.

In the area identified, there is a critical 3-kilometre section of foreshore that needs emergency works. At present, $800M is needed to continue works.

“We will observe all the Procurement laws in getting it done. There are provisions in our Procurement Act for emergency works. We have started engaging. Minister Jaipaul Sharma [Minister within the Public Infrastructure Ministry] would have done that commencing Monday, September 30. NPTAB [National Procurement & Tender Administration Board] to advise us how we can get what we need to do within the shortest possible time,” Minister Patterson emphasised.

The Contingency Fund is only accessed with the necessary approval for emergencies. With the next period of spring tide set to begin October 26, Minister Patterson conveyed there is a race against the clock to minimise its effects on Guyanese lives and property. Much of these works are continuing in the aforementioned areas in Mahaicony.

Moreover, Senior Response Officer of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Captain Salim October, while providing an overview of the spring tides’ impact, bemoaned the reaction of residents who were compla-

cent during the situation that was driven climate change.

“Many community members have not heeded the warning that would have been provided to them through the Regional Disaster Management System and direct intervention by the Civil Defence Commission.”

“Within the space of two hours, community members were informed that floodwaters would have entered their homes and properties imminently; something that they chose to ignore, and as a consequence, only responded when floodwaters were almost to the tip of their doors,” Capt. October continued. This is in light of warning being issued more than 24 hours before spring tide.

Through a multi-agency approach, a concerted effort was made to bring relief to the 65 affected communities that span an area of 148 kilometres.

The responses include, but are not limited to, the relocation of livestock to higher ground, distribution of sandbags to households, dredging of drainage canals and tube installations in communities.

During the period, it was also widely reported that

there was a continuous distribution of water and cleaning hampers to affected residents.

The CDC has primarily coordinated this aspect of the relief to those affected. To add to these efforts, Director-General within the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon said the government is exploring the most suitable methodology for providing funds to those that have experienced loss.

“There is going to be an assessment made and based on that assessment, at the level of the regions, whatever is the sum that is allocated for that purpose will be dealt with in an equitable [manner],” DG Harmon related.

It is estimated that nearly 400 households were flooded. There has been a loss of livestock, in addition, to produce from subsistence farmers. In the meantime, the CDC will conduct its disaster relief responses even as the current spring tide ends on Wednesday, October 2.

42 days for claims and objections …GECOM extends timeframe in keeping with elections date -PPP objects, commission to meet again on Friday

THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has set a 42-day timeline for the conducting of claims and objections, as opposed to the 35-day period which the commission had recently agreed to.

Government-appointed GECOM Commissioner, Vincent Alexander, said the decision to extend the period was taken after President David Granger announced that General and Regional Elections will be held on March 02, 2020.

“We had said it will run for 35 days at the time when the projected elections date was in the sense of February… with the President having announced elections for March 2, we have now adjusted the period for claims and objections,” said Alexander in an invited comment following GECOM’s statutory meeting on Tuesday.

Alexander said the GECOM secretariat advisably extended the period after recognising that there was more time to conduct claims and objections. The extension, he said, does not interfere with the overall framework of GECOM. The claims and objections period, which started on Tuesday, allows persons, who will become 18 years old by the end of October this year, to be registered. Individuals who have had changes in their particulars, including addresses and names can also utilise the period to make the necessary adjustments.

According to Alexander, now that the time period has been extended, persons will have more time to get their name on the Official List of Electors (OLE).

sion, opposition-appointed GECOM commissioners disagreed with the commission’s decision.

Opposition-appointed GECOM Commissioner, Robeson Benn, said he had initially objected to 35 days, noting that his first option was 28 days, but now that it

has been extended further, he is in total disagreement.

“We had a great disagreement and it came to a vote…

I do not accept the 42 days period,” Benn lamented. Another opposition-appointed GECOM Commissioner, Bibi Shadick, also said that she does not support the decision

to extend the period to 42 days.

“I do not agree with it… there is no next step because if the chairman signs an order and she refuses to revisit it then we cannot do anything,” said Shadick. Despite disagreeing on the extension, the commissioner said they agreed with GECOM’s decision to have the claims and objections offices opened all day as opposed to just in the afternoons. In addition, in order to ensure the process is more efficient, GECOM will be setting up 41 sub offices across the country.

In addition to matters related to claims and objections, the commission continued discussions on how the data garnered from the house-to-house registration exercise should be used.

“We are still considering the specific use of house-tohouse data,” said Alexander,

adding that the discussions will continue on Friday.

GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Warde, had said that the commission was conducting the encoding and verification process of the merger of data from the house-to-house registration exercise with the National Register of Registrants, which will ultimately lead to the extraction of the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE).

“That Preliminary List of Electors [PLE] will move us straight into a claims and objections exercise. So, we cannot immediately run into the claims and objections exercise, because we are still going through that process of the merger,” she told the Department of Public Information (DPI).

Patterson, BBCI hold talks on maintenance of Berbice Bridge Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson and other officials from his ministry met with the Board of Directors of the Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) where they discussed the way forward for the maintenance of the six pontoons the Government of Guyana had budgeted for the year 2019.

In a release the ministry said Minister Patterson outlined three phenomena going forward for the benefit of both the Private Company – BBCI, and the Government of Guyana - for the Guyanese populace. Coming out to of the meeting the following were suggested: (1) A jack up barge would be put in place (2) BBCI and Demerara Harbour Bridge Incorporation would be expected to provide an estimated cost and time frame for the commencement of works on the pontoons.

(3) BBCI would examine the question of the risk factor for the operation of the bridge. BBCI and MoPI would then meet within ten days to discuss their findings and/or report on the operations of the aforementioned issues.

Last month Patterson had noted that while the management of the bridge had

refused an offer of $120M from the government to carry out repairs to pontoons supporting the bridge, the structure has seen no repairs since 2008. He said too that

His statement had come days after the BBCI said it is “extremely disappointed in the government’s refusal to now meet and present a fair and reasonable offer to purchase the ownership of the bridge” and it noted that this was against the backdrop of Minister Patterson’s previous public statement on the matter. The company said that it has always been the understanding of the BBCI

differences rather than proceed to litigation where there can only be one winner and one loser.”

In 2018, the BBCI announced that it planned to increase fares and in October that year, it published the proposed rates which it said would take effect from November 12, 2018. The sums appeared high for the average road user and Patterson said in July that year when the proposal was first floated by the BBCI, that the proposal was “burdensome” to commuters. “We will ensure that no further hardship from the bridge is passed on

(G$14,600) and minibuses (G$8,040) among other high rates per trip. On Thursday Patterson fired back at the BCCI’s statement, when he noted that the matter of the APNU+AFC government protecting citizens from the “unconscionable” rates of the BBCI, is in the court, where that company placed it.

Patterson said that while the BCCI is “disappointed” in the government’s stance, what that company has not addressed is the fact that nine months after the government made the sum of G$120M available for the repairs of at least six of the pontoons that

support the bridge, the company refused to allow the authorities to proceed with the repairs. Patterson said that the “good citizens of Regions Five & Six should be aware that the pontoons supporting this bridge have been in the river since at least 2008,” although the recommended maintenance period is every three years. He said that there are 39 pontoons supporting the bridge, and a simple calculation would reveal that if repairs are effected at six per year, it would take almost seven years to repair all the pontoons. “Yes there is a possibility of some pontoons being in the river for 18 years without repairs,” Patterson

said.

He said that as the Minister of Public Infrastructure, he remains “laser focused” on the safe and affordable transit of goods and people over the Berbice River. He said too then that he was willing to meet at any time to further discuss the maintenance and repairs of the Berbice Bridge however, although he noted that the legal case is being handled by the Attorney General’s Chambers while financial matters remain under the domain of the Ministry of Finance. “I will not be accused of fiddling while Rome burns,” Patterson said.

-No fatalities or injuries reported A PRIVATELY owned and operated Cessna 182 aircraft upon landing at Bethany, Region One, hit a pile of dirt and flipped at approximately 17:37hrs on Tuesday, the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has said.

Reports are that there are no injuries or fatalities. The GCAA and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Unit (AIG) have commenced their investigation into this accident.

Port Kaituma residents object to bus shed being painted red

TEMPERS flared at the community of Port Kaituma in the North West District on Tuesday after the chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) decided to paint a community bus shed in the Opposition party colours.

According to residents, NDC Chair Orlando Thorne, a People’s Progressive Party (PPP) official, instructed a con-

tractor who was renovating the bus shed to repaint the structure in red instead of blue.

Port Kaituma resident, Lex Barker told the Guyana Chronicle that the NDC formed a market committee earlier this year, and named him a representative for the vendors. Barker said he has been advocating for years for the bus shed and toilets to be repaired. “So it was agreed for the repairs and

painting. And the blue it was in was agreed to after I suggested it as a neutral colour,” he said.

Thorne’s phone was turned off when attempts were made to contact him for a comment.

Reports are that on Tuesday, three NDC councillors were immediately contacted when residents observed the bus shed being repainted in red.

Reports are that when the councillors arrived at the location, the workers were immediately advised to cease work until further notice. Residents contacted Thorne and

It was noted by a councillor that the NDC has not met since January this year, and as such no decisions were made regarding projects in the

“The bus shed is not the property of, nor is it a donation from, the PPP; it must not be painted in any political party colours,” Barker noted.

Barker said after the councillors objected and ordered the works to be ceased, Opposition parliamentarian Colin Croal posted photographs of his car along the roadway, in a move aimed at causing him embarrassment. He noted that he saw a resident taking photographs of his place of business and his car, and he immediately realised that something

was amiss.

Reports are that residents have vowed to ensure that the bus shed is repainted in blue, as was originally planned. It was noted, too, that the Officer in Charge of the Port Kaituma Police Station has been briefed on the issue, since the NDC chair plans taking matters into his own hands should anyone attempt to repaint the bus shed.

The police have informed the councillors that the lawmen will not get involved in the matter unless some breaks the law.

PPP NDC Chairman vandalises photos of President, Prime Minster CHAIRMAN of the No. 52/74 Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Anil Ramgahan, on Tuesday morning, ordered the overseer and staff of his NDC to remove the photos of President David Granger, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and cabinet from the walls of the building and after they refused he decided to remove them himself and placed them on the floor.

According to a councillor of the said NDC, Lakeram Singh, he received a call from staff of the NDC that the chairman came in at around 10:10hrs and ordered the staff to take a pair of scissors and shred the photos of the government officials that were hanging on the walls.

The staff refused to budge and the chairman decided to instruct the overseer, Ravindra Dass, who also refused. After realising no one was complying with his order he decided to rip the photos off the walls and placed them on the floor.

NDC is bent on stymieing development since they are afraid it will make the residents be more supportive of the government and the opposition will lose votes.

Meanwhile in an invited comment, Harbajan also condemned the actions of the NDC Chairman calling it “immature and disrespectful”, noting that it seems to be bent on creating tension in the region.

Tuesday’s acts seem to fit into a pattern by the PPP over recent months.

The images that were thrown to the ground

The chairman of the NDC reportedly refused to answer the staff who questioned the reason behind his actions and left immediately after committing the act.

Singh, who was conducting business at Skeldon at the time left promptly and was accompanied by the Regional representative of the Office of the Prime Minister, Gobin Harbhajan, as they went into the NDC to question the chairman but he

had already left. They subsequently made a report at the Number 51 Police Station and was told the police are seeking advice on the matter.

“His actions were very disrespectful and unlawful and I would like to know what the motive behind his actions was or who is the person that advised him to commit this wicked act,” Singh related.

He continued that President David Granger is still

in charge of the country and will remain President until general elections are held and the action by the chairman is very unbecoming since he needs to be respectful of the offices of the President and Prime Minister.

Singh, who has been an APNU+AFC councillor at the NDC, noted that the NDC is the largest in the country and is controlled by the opposition PPP. He noted that the actions of the

Officials of the Liberty & Justice Party (LJP) on Tuesday met with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Justice (ret'd) Claudette Singh, chaired the meeting requested by LJP General Secretary John Flores. Senior Party members Davon Vanveen, Yvette Irving & Campaign Manager, Yvonne Cole made up the LJP delegation who accompanied Mr. Flores on this fact-finding mission.

Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield (through the Chair) answered all of the questions tabled by the LJP, with additional information given by several GECOM Commissioners in attendance.

The topics covered were the procedures of the Claims & Objections period with emphasis on the how to be included on the final voters list and the criteria to do so. According to the LJP GECOM commissioner, Vincent Alexander made it clear that scrutineers are entitled to scrutinise every transaction of the electoral period including during Election Day. It was noted by the LJP

delegation that there are no independent scrutineers as they are sourced from parliamentary parties. The said the meeting was very fruitful and they look forward to continued interactions with GECOM and support any credible electoral process.

Only recently supporters of that party led by its presidential candidate, Irfaan Ali threatened to overturn the vehicle of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Karen Cummings, during a protest outside of the Pegasus Hotel. Inside the hotel some of its MPs also disrupted the President’s address at the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association luncheon.

Their actions have been roundly condemned.

Indigenous development continues THE APNU+AFC administration is to be commended for achieving so many developmental goals during only four years in office. Of particular note, are the achievements made which benefit Guyana’s indigenous peoples. After all, Guyana’s first peoples had been neglected for far too long by the previous People’s Progressive Party’s (PPP) heartless regime.

The enactment of positive policies by the David Granger government is a refreshing, heartening and welcome change. Guyana’s indigenous peoples may now, under the APNU+AFC administration, enjoy a better life, even as Heritage Month comes to an end and government continues to work towards the goal of equal opportunities for all Guyanese.

President Granger’s 10-Point Plan of Action for Hinterland Development, where the vast majority of indigenous people live, has certainly resulted in major dividends.

The plan, which was unveiled in August 2015, has been an unqualified and unprecedented success.

As a direct result of government’s visionary programmes and initia-

tives, Guyana’s first peoples may now enjoy much better lives.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo has eloquently articulated a few of the achievements. The prime minister wrote, “The celebration of Indigenous Heritage Month should give us an opportunity to reflect not only on the big progress unfolding in the many small hinterland communities, but on the role of our indigenous peoples in preserving and protecting our land and our collective life.

“Over many years I have heard cynics warning against government “giving away” lands to indigenous communities. But for me it is not about giving away. It is about “giving back” communal lands to our First Peoples. If we could learn anything from the Amazonian rainforest fires in nearby Brazil, we should see the “giving back” process as an investment of confidence in our indigenous peoples who have occupied our rainforests for centuries, and who have so far saved them from indiscriminate destruction. They have been the guardians of our rainforests, our rivers, our fish stock, birds and animals, and

endangered species that mirror our pristine, beautiful, rich and unique Guyanese life,” The prime minister continued.

That view, expressed by the prime minister, is a radical departure from the horrible situation that existed under the callous, cold-hearted PPP regime. Under the PPP, indigenous peoples were viewed as “bush people;” undeserving of attention; they were considered to be second-class people by the PPP. One example of the PPP’s unconcern for indigenous peoples is the current political climate that the PPP created. The fact is that the APNU+AFC administration wants to update the Amerindian Act. This is so because government wants indigenous Guyanese to have access to better services, faster passage of land titles, more jobs, and a better standard of life. Sadly, presently, the coalition government cannot update the act because, the PPP, in its greed for power, moved a no-confidence motion last December, thereby halting government’s work to update the Act. That work by government had been progress-

ing until the PPP stopped it.

Nonetheless, much progress had already been made. Prime Minister Nagamootoo said, for example, “No one can today deny the positive changes in the life and condition of hinterland (indigenous) communities. Our indigenous peoples are no longer totally cut off from each other, or from the coast, though we are separated by vast expanses of savannahs, forests, mountains and swamps. During the past four years, the APNU+AFC government has tried to bridge the divide. It has, between 2015 and 2018, invested some $48 Billion on expanding, maintaining and constructing roads and bridges in the hinterland. An additional $38.5 Billion was approved to continue this process in 2019.”

The prime minister mentioned the creation of the towns of Bartica, Mabaruma, Mahdia and Lethem.

He noted the improvements to the electricity supply system at locations such as Matthews Ridge, Port Kaituma, St Cuthbert’s Mission, Siparuta, Orealla, Moraikobai, Moco-Moco, Wauna, and the Culvert City Housing Scheme. He said

that, “At Mabaruma, in the Barima-Waini (Region One), a $272M solar farm was built. A similar energy facility costing $200M will be erected at Annai, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine), together with a $450.2M hydropower plant at the Cheung Falls, Kato, Potaro-Siparuni (Region Eight) to supply electricity to the residential Kato Secondary School.

He noted that some 57 airstrips have been upgraded or constructed. He alluded to the new, paved roads at Mahdia, Port Kaituma and Mabaruma, among other impressive developments too numerous to list in this space.

Obviously, the lives of countless indigenous Guyanese have been positively affected by the policies and programmes of this administration. Evidently, no citizen would want to go back to the dark days; we all want to move forward under the leadership of an honest president, David Granger, and a trusted coalition government. All Guyanese should take action to ensure that progress towards a good life continues.

Government has been fair to SN despite its nasty, biased reporting Dear Editor, I HAVE read with some interest the issues relating to Stabroek News and the Government. I have initially read Stabroek News version of events but decided to withhold my comments and views until I’ve read the Government version. I think this was the reasonable and objective thing to do before forming a conclusion since as the cliche goes a story has three sides- your side, my side and the correct side.

Before I state my observations, please allow me highlight my experiences with Stabroek News. When the former President Bharrat Jagdeo decreed that Stabroek News should receive no state advertisement I was incensed. I saw it as political stifling of the media. I refused to sit idly by and see Stabroek News go down.

As a result when Stabroek News

introduced annual subscriptions of US$100, I was one of the first to subscribe. This I did for over a decade.

Mr. Editor anyone who knows me would tell you that I am a creature of habit. As it relates to reading the news, I read the Kaieteur News first, followed by the Stabroek and Guyana Chronicle. It is only in 2016 that I have added Guyana Chronicle to my list of news source. My point is that by the time I would I have read Kaieteur News, there is no need to read Stabroek News because Guyana as a small country would not have a massive numbers of news worthy materials. As a result what is in Kaieteur News would be in Stabroek News. Despite that fact, I continue to pay my annual subscription of US$100to Stabroek News even though I did not read it.

Now my experiences with Stabroek News. A few years back a

doctor in Guyana had a letter published in Stabroek News which was medically incorrect. This doctor wrote of sleep studies to investigate coronary artery disease among other erroneous information. Also this very doctor questioned my patriotism to Guyana since he could not counter my medical arguments published in another news outlet that Stabroek News refused to publish. I respectfully corrected him but Stabroek News under Anand Persaud yet again refused to publish my response. To me it is only fair that Stabroek News provide me a right of reply. I emailed Anand Persaud about my concerns and the following day a significantly edited version of my letter was published.

It was so edited that the substance of the message was distorted.

Mr. Editor we all know that all governments do make mistakes and it is imperative that supporters

of the Government be objective and not follow blindly. That is the position I held but unfortunately Stabroek News twisted it to give the impression that I was not giving this Government credit where credit was due. Every time I am critical of the Government they would publish my letters but if I am complementary of the Government it is never published. Mr. Editor I must clearly state that this was before the now infamous No Confidence Motion.

Anyway, I continued my subscription to Stabroek News. On many occasions I would see proPPP letters being published in Stabroek News. Many of these letters contain propaganda. Most of them I would ignore but some I felt compel to respond to, especially if they were in my field of medicine.

Stabroek News would never publish my version. For them only one side should be heard. I saw a Dr. Rohan

Khan wrote a letter in Stabroek News today titled, “No Government should try to disadvantage any media.” In his letter he wrote, “If I may respectfully remind those who need reminding, the media advances public interest by informing the public of the events and developments that have taken place, and thereby educating the people.”

Let me ask this gentleman this question. A provider of information to the public should take a neutral position and just provide the facts to the reader for them to form their own opinion. Do you think that is the position Stabroek News took?

If you do think so, please support it with credible evidence? Another person by the name of Sean Ori also wrote in Stabroek News, titled, “Afraid of constructive criticism.”

It is as if these envoys, perhaps from another galaxy, or awakened from a political Rip Van Winkle, have now sat up to the realisation so patently clear to the entire nation, except to the dangerously dishonest Freedom House political crooks, who continuously objected to having a sanitised voters list, that the coalition government’s concern was for national and regional elections to be held by way of a sanitised list.

But it begs the question, as to what these ABE (America, Britain, European Union) envoys expected the gov-

ernment to do on receiving the GECOM timelines from Chairperson, Ret’d Justice Claudette Singh. It would seem, subsequent to the latter information being given to the President, that he was to have immediately announced an election date. One wonders how this would have been possible, given two important aspects: first, having to discuss such a most crucial matter with his cabinet, as a matter of principle, for any such decision, if any; and, second, to have agreed to any such decision would have meant the definite possibility of impugning GECOM’S critical exercise of the continuation of a clean voters’ list.

This would have favoured the political opposition PPP/ C’s sinister plan of national elections, by way of a corrupt list. For the President Granger administration, the latter was not going to be a part of their electoral plans for the nation, and their understanding of democracy; and neither

I only hope there would be no more flooding Dear Editor, A LITTLE over six weeks ago there was flooding within the township of Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two. According to the mayor and his deputy, both of whom visited the affected areas and had discussions with residents, the flooding was caused by a pump or maybe two pumps that were not functioning and was aided in no small way by uncleared and silted drains.

While I was driving through these affected communities or villages, particu-

larly Devonshire Castle and the neighbouring villages, the floodwaters were evident and so was the condition of the trenches and drains; but from then to now, I am not certain if the unserviceable pump or pumps are now serviceable, but the condition of the trenches and drains remain the same.

I only hope there would be no more flooding, but if there is, I am certain that the mayor and his deputy would again visit these communities. I am not sure, however, what they are going to tell residents.

I WANT to share my thoughts on the conviction of the “Cash Jet” Guyanese, K Lall. This is the pilot who was allowed to build special facilities at our airport and could come and go as he pleased. We also know that he provided executive rides for former PPP government bigwigs.

Lall is the latest of criminal operatives con-

nected to the PPP. We must not forget convicted drug lord Shaheed “Roger” Khan, real estate fraudster Ed Ahmad, and EZjet boss, Sonny Ramdeo, who is serving time for $US 20M fraud -- all in America’s jail.

The PPP had a welloiled overseas connection, and Guyanese must never forget this as they prepare for elections.

Therefore, one must posit this question to the ABE representatives: what was so difficult for an understanding that the calls made by all those crooked voices, shouting their deceptive heads off, was for elections that would have had grave post-balloting consequences?

It is for these reasons that I wrote Stabroek News a long epistle and cancelled my subscription in January 2019, ending over a decade of over US$1000 subscription. A subscription that I did not have to pay since Stabroek News was not providing me anything additional from the other news outlet in Guyana. A subscription that was much higher than internationally highly acclaimed media outlets e.g The New York Times. A subscription which was introduced to keep the newspaper afloat when state advertisement was removed by PPP but after the state advertisement was restored the exorbitantly high subscription was maintained to fleece Guyanese. Greed!!

After the NCM, Stabroek News took a position which is their right. In my opinion, having taken a position it was important that they were objective and provide Guyanese both sides of the political coin. That is what respectable newspaper would do. That was not the case. Stabroek News became the biased mouthpiece of the PPP and their cronies. Not only that, Stabroek News on multiple occasions disrespected our President. Has Anand Persaud apologised to Mr. Granger when he wrote that editorial “Temporising?” After that editorial, many other editorials followed which were equally disrespectful. Dr. Khan is this the way Stabroek News was educating the public. Miseducation. When the Appeal Court in the NCM ruled in the Government favour, Stabroek News was asleep for hours before they published the ruling. When the Government loses and had bad publicity, it would be in bright red in front page of Stabroek News as breaking news.

When the President of the Caribbean Bank reported that Guyana is the fastest growing economy in the Caribbean, Stabroek News placed it on page 9. No need for prominence since it is good news about the Government. Dr. Khan is this the way to educate the public. Come on. Step out. You or whoever, let’s debates on facts.

I’ve read both the Stabroek News and the Government version of events. What is clear is that the Government was providing the Stabroek the biggest slice of the state advertisement. Many media outlet received no state advertisement. Why folks like Dr. Khan et al not coming out in support of those media outlets? For their credit, those media outlet unlike Stabroek News, see state advertisement as a privilege and not an entitlement. What is also fact is that Stabroek News unilaterally cancelled its contract with the Government because of, in the context of Government spending, a small amount of monies owed. That was drastic. No negotiations. No warning letter. Just Boom. Stabroek News stated that it did this because there was a high likelihood that the Government would change. That is garbage. Even if the Government had changed, the new government still has to pay the debt. The debt is not with APNU-PPP. It is with the State, regardless of which party Governs. Anand, the State was not going anywhere. Secondly, when Stabroek News unilaterally terminated the contract with the Government, they expected the Government to sit there waiting on them to return. Get real Anand, the world does not revolve around you. The Government had a right to seek alternatives media to advertise. You made a political decision to gamble and you’ve lost. Dry your eyes and snotty nose and stop the public sympathy crying.

When Stabroek News stated that it was a high likelihood that the Government would have changed, I see that as a Freudian slip. That is the wish of Anand Persaud. Only he knows the reason why. What is clear is that the Government was and is fair to his newspaper despite his newspaper’s nasty and biased reporting towards them. He was the architect of their downfall by unilaterally terminating the contract. The fact is that Stabroek News has received the biggest slice of state advertisement worth millions of dollars.

I agree a Government has responsibility to the media but the media has a greater responsibility to its readers. Be fair.

Be balanced. Be objective. Anand Persaud is all in tears that the Government is not fair to them. The question is, are they fair to their readers. He who approaches the court for justice must approach it with clean hands. Anand Persaud, are your hands clean?

Let’s see if you practise what you are crying over, like a baby having gripes and finally start publishing my letters.

A suicidal person would not seek help

Dear Editor

THE Caribbean Voice commends the media for publishing helpline contact info at the end of articles and programmes and urging anyone who is depressed or suicidal to seek help.

However, the fact is that more often than not, anyone who is suicidal or suffering from suicide ideation will never call or reach out for help. It is loved ones-- friends and family -- around who have to get them help. And you do not need their permission to do if you really care, but you do need to become familiar with warning signs which can be found all over the Internet. In fact, almost invariably, media reports on suicide victims

contain quotes from loved ones that ‘everything seemed ok’ or ‘there was no reason for the victim to choose suicide’ or something similar.

So, The Caribbean Voice urges media to emphasise the need to become familiar with warning signs and to urge loved ones of suicidal victims to seek urgent help once the warning signs are identified. It is better to err on the side of safety than to dismiss the signs, even if the person has always, for example, talked about wanting to kill him/herself. The fact is that there will always be that time when the person acts on the threats.

PAHO urges greater awareness, advocacy in cancer fight

THE need for more cancer awareness and advocacy programmes was underscored when the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) hosted a symposium as its first event to kick off the company’s Pinktober 2019 calendar of activities.

The event, which was held at the Roraima’ Duke Lodge on Duke Street, Kingston, provided a platform for survivors, caregivers, patients and healthcare professionals to speak of the challenges and other areas of cancer-care management in Guyana.

Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence, in a video message, and PAHO Representative Dr. Wiliam Adu-Krow, both gave emotional personal experiences of having been diagnosed with the disease and how they were able to cope with it.

Dr. Adu-Krow called for much more to be done if this country is to make significant inroads in tackling the scourge.

Using statistics to press home the point that can-

cer spares no one, Dr. Adu-Krow said that the major issue with the disease is the survival rate, with that for breast cancer worldwide ranging from 80 per cent in North America and the developed world, to 60 per cent in middle-income countries, and as low as below 40 per cent in developing countries.

According to him, breast cancer globally takes the lives of about half-a-million people yearly, with about 50 per cent of those deaths occurring in developing countries. Noting that PAHO takes care of about 58 per cent of persons with breast cancer in the developing world, Dr. Adu-Krow said that another baffling thing about breast cancer is that globally, almost one out of every four persons that is identified with the malady dies. A case in point, he said, is that of the 462 000 persons identified with breast cancer in 2011, some 100,000, the equivalent of 25 per cent, have died.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, meanwhile, it has

been found that a great proportion of breast cancer deaths occur in women under 65, as opposed to the developed countries where it’s women over 65.

CLOSER TO HOME Turning his attention closer to home, Dr. Adu-Krow said that here in Guyana, breast cancer has been found to rank as the Number One form of cancer overall, particularly between 2003 and 2012.

Noting that survival-wise, about 80 per cent of breast cancer victims in the United States can survive, whereas in Guyana it is only 30 per cent, Dr. Adu-Krow, who couldn’t help but wonder why this is so, seized the opportunity at this point to call for more work to be done on the subject, if we are to ever get to the bottom of it.

Noting that in the less developed countries, it has been narrowed down to the lack of early detection programmes, compounded by the fact that a high proportion of women present

themselves during the late stage of the disease, and the lack of adequate facilities to enable an early detection of the disease, Dr. Adu-Krow harked back to a statement made earlier into the programme by Minister Lawrence, where she spoke of plans to acquire more mammogram equipment, Dr. AduKrow suggested that a good place to start would be to have mammogram tests done in each of the major hospitals in the

regions.

Gov’t committed to augmenting investment in education sector – Minister of State MINISTER of State, Mrs. Dawn Hastings-Williams, on Tuesday, commended teachers and educators for their continued dedication to moulding the nation’s children and reiterated the government’s commitment to investing in the sector.

The minister made these statements in her feature address at the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) statutory branch meeting, which was held at the Friendship Primary School, Buxton, East Coast Demerara. She said that education is the pathway to equality and teachers are the driving force behind upward mobility. The minister noted that it is important that educators are recognised for their important role in nation-building.

“As an educator, you are called to mould the minds

of our children… with the knowledge needed to succeed… The government under the leadership of President [David] Granger recognises the values of educators and is cognisant that in order to have greater success in the education sector, more resources are needed and we will continue to work towards ensuring that those needs are met,” Minister Hastings-Williams said.

The minister also said that she was particularly pleased to have been invited to deliver the feature remarks to the meeting on World Teachers’ Day 2019, which has been themed “I teach for a better world – Consolidating for greater success in the future’.

She reminded that the Head of State had committed to ensuring that a substantial portion of the revenues earned from the sustainable development of the petroleum sector would be invested in education.

That is [why] we have invested $170 billion on education,” she said. The minister then encouraged the educators to continue to be agents of positive change in the lives

of their students. Meanwhile, GTU General Secretary, Ms. Coretta McDonald, encouraged the teachers to do their best to ensure that their students become well-rounded individuals.

“We have recognised not only yesterday, but over the years that education is essential to living a fulfilling and

better life… Education is the fundamental right of every citizen in our land and it is capable of bringing about the desired changes and the upliftment in the human mind and the society,” she said.

Additionally, Acting Regional Education Officer (REO), Department of Education Region Four, Ms. Tiffany Harvey, said that theme for World Teachers’ Day resonated with her personally and she encouraged the teachers to use it to motivate themselves.

THE Caribbean Court of Justice Academy for Law will host the inaugural Eminent Caribbean Jurists Gala and Awards Ceremony on October 7, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad.

This event, which will honour the contributions of the region’s distinguished judicial officers and legal professionals to the development of international law, will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean region, a release from the CCJ said. The CCJ Academy for Law is the educational arm of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), and was established to, among other things, “promote the recognition of judges and other legal practitioners who have made a consequential and lasting contribution to Caribbean jurisprudence, and to memorialise that contribution.”

The October 7 special occasion is meant to be the first of a series of annual events to serve this purpose, and will see 18 jurists inducted into the Eminent Caribbean Jurists Hall of Fame. Five of these inductees, who represent the most outstanding and long-serving honourees, will be publicly recognised and celebrated with the conferral of lifetime awards. These are Sir Shridath Ramphal (Commonwealth of Nations); Judge Patrick Robinson (International Court of Justice); Judge Anthony Lucky (International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea); Ambassador Dr. Bertrand Ramcharan (United Nations Refugee Office); and Professor Duke Pollard (Caribbean Court of Justice).

Judge Robinson, of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will deliver the feature lecture, titled, “Independence is a Right, not a Gift: Lessons

from Resolution 1514 and the Chagos Advisory Opinion” to an audience of regional government officials and policy-makers, judicial officers, legal professionals, law students and many others.

The event will also feature the formal launch of a book containing samples of the work of these jurists, under the title: Eminent Caribbean International Law Jurists: The Rule of International Law in the Caribbean. This publication is intended to provide a lasting resource, which will add value to the work of legal practitioners and others. The book will also serve to deepen the understanding of the culture of international justice.

The Academy will host a fundraising dinner at the Hyatt on October 8, the day following the Awards ceremony.

Teen slapped with Over 300 cases listed for trial as three charges Demerara Criminal Assizes reopens released on bail

AN 18-year-old man appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday October 1, 2019, to answer to three charges.

Shamar Sears appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse and pleaded not guilty to the first charge which stated that, on September 27, 2019, at Robb Street, he, with others, robbed Alfredo Rodriguez of one LG cellular phone valued at $30,000.

Sears also pleaded not guilty to the second charge which stated that, on the same day, at Cornhill Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged one shirt valued at $3000, property of Trevor Clement.

The final charge stated that, on the same day, and at the same location, he resisted arrest by Police Constable Clement. Sears pleaded not guilty to the said charge.

According to the statements presented in court, on the day in question, Rodrigues was walking along Robb Street, Georgetown, when Sears, in the company of others, approached him and robbed him of his phone.

Rodrigues reported the matter and a City Police who was on Cornhill Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, saw Sears and approached him.

The court heard the officer attempted to arrest the accused but the two got into a scuffle and Sears held on to the City Police’s shirt causing it to tear in the process.

Sears was later arrested and taken into custody where he was positively identified by Rodriguez as the person who robbed him.

Magistrate Nurse, after listening to the statements, released Sears on $75,000 bail.

He was ordered to report to the City Constabulary every Monday and Friday until the hearing and determination of the trial. He is also expected to return to court on December 17.

Student stabbed by classmate in bicycle tyre row A STUDENT of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute was hospitalised but later discharged after he was stabbed by another student on Monday afternoon.

The teen, Nikeem Noble, 17 of Winkle Road New Amsterdam, was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon after being treated for a stab wound to his upper chest. The incident occurred after Nobel confronted another youth whom he accused of puncturing his bicycle tires.

According to information, Noble would usually park his bicycle at the school but would later find it vandalised. Whenever he asked around he was directed to another student who allegedly committed the act.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that when Noble approached the suspect on Monday when the act was committed, an argument ensued which subsequently led to a scuffle. At that point, the classmate whipped out a sharp object and stabbed Noble to his left-side chest.

Meanwhile, a teacher who was close by quickly intervened and rushed the youth to the hospital. Neville Noble, the father of the injured student, said he is still awaiting a call form from the school as it relates to the incident.

He stated also a report was made to the police and the matter is currently under investigation.

THE October session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes opened on Tuesday, October 01, 2019 with 322 cases listed for trial.

At present, three Judges are on rotation at the Demerara Assizes, with Justices Sandil Kissoon, Jo-Ann Barlow dealing with murder cases and Justice Simone Morris Ramlall presiding over matters in the Sexual Offences Court.

Jail delivery was done on Monday by Justice Morris Ramlall, bringing to an end the June session. Of the cases listed, 116 are for sexual offences, including rape, carnal knowledge and buggery.

Listed for trial is Muslim scholar Nezaam Ali, who is currently serving a 45-year sentence for raping a nine-year-old boy.

Ali will go on trial for eight additional counts of sexually abusing eight boys.

He is facing multiple indictments for crimes allegedly committed between 2011 and 2012, including sexual activity with a child under 16 years and sexual activity with a child by abusing a position of trust.

Another well-known case is former Bishops’ High School teacher, Coen Jackson, who is set to go on trial for engaging in sexual activity with a child under the age of 16, while being in a position of trust. He is currently out on bail.

Another case that is currently in the spotlight is well known transgender personality, Otis Pearson, popularly known as ‘Otisha’, who is enlisted to answer to a rape charge involving a minor.

Private sector joins CDC’s relief efforts

CIVIL Defence Commission (CDC), Director-General, Lieutenant Colonel, Kester Craig, said the commission is working with other agencies in carrying out its responsibilities following the overtopping of the sea and river defences by spring tide last week.

“What we are doing right now too is actually mapping using Geographical Information System (GIS). All of the areas that were actually impacted to get an understanding of how the high tides are actually affecting the coastline,” Craig said.

The private sector has also collaborated with the commission to help the severely impacted communities.

Residents of Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara, along with other Region Three communities were revisited and food hampers and cleaning supplies were delivered to them by the CDC.

This exercise was coordinated on Tuesday, following a donation of a cheque valued at $1M from Chung’s Global Enterprise.

“This gesture is timely and will provide food supplies that can last a family of five for about two weeks to three weeks. We are expediting this process. This cheque will be encashed immediately to purchase food supplies to be distributed by 16:00 hours this afternoon,” said Craig.

He explained that many residents within the hard-hit areas lost much of their food supplies, particularly due to the layout of the homes, where kitchens are at the bottom flats.

Justice Barlow told the court that gun violence is prevalent in today’s society and the court cannot condone persons using firearms to settle their disputes.

Smith was sentenced to 19 years’ imprisonment and the Judge ordered that the prison authorities deduct the time he spent on remand from his sentence.

The shooting incident is the latest of several incidence of violence between the Cayenne gang and Teon Allen. Williams and Allen shared a close relationship and it is believed that the gunmen thought Allen was in the car or they targeted his close cousin as an act of revenge. The feud has been sending shockwaves through Linden, particularly Amelia's Ward, where several of the incidents occurred. With Linden being a relatively peaceful community and the division enjoying a 20 per cent reduction in all categories of serious crimes, regional officials are bemoaning the situation and are calling on the youths to stop the violence before another life is taken.

Robbery accused forgiven by victim – case dismissed 18-year-old Anthony Edwards of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court in August, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that, on August 1, 2019, at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with an ice pick, he robbed Fabayon Persaud of a Samsung cellular phone valued at $26,000.

Police Prosecutor, Traceyann Gittens, stated that, on the day in question, Persaud was walking along Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, when he was confronted by Edwards and others.

The court heard that Edwards, who was armed with an ice pick, placed it to the victim’s side and relieved him of his phone. Edwards and his accomplices then made good their escape.

The matter was reported, an investigation was carried out, and Edwards was arrested and charged with the offence.

He was later remanded.

One month after the teen was remanded, he returned to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess, on Tuesday October 1, 2019, and the case against was him dismissed.

Guyana agrees to Regional Information Card for Venezuelan migrants GUYANA recently participated in a two-day Technical Meeting on the Quito Process held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during which the representatives agreed to the creation of a Regional Information Card for Venezuelan migrants.

Legal Officer, Frontiers Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dianna Khan, and Officer-in-Charge of Ports of Entry, Immigration Department of the Guyana Police Force, Assistant Superintendent, Ms. Jeanette Prince, participated in the meeting which was held on September 17 and 18, 2019.

The two Guyanese were among Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Immigration officials representing several Latin American countries.

Also present at the meeting were officials from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Quito Process focuses on a coordinated regional response to Venezuelan displacement. It is a multilateral initiative of several Latin American countries that aims to harmonise domestic

Men who confessed to killing elderly women to return to court October 24

TWO years after two elderly women were killed, during an invasion at their South Road and Albert Street home, their killers on Tuesday, October 01, 2019, confessed to the gruesome crime.

Imran Khan called Christopher Khan, 25, and Stephen Jason Andrews, 28, both former residents of Albouystown, were charged with the capital offence of murder.

However, on Tuesday,

the men opted to plead guilty to manslaughter.

Particulars of the two charges state that between October 2 and October 3 at Lot 243 South Road and Albert Street, the duo unlawfully killed Constance Fraser, 89 and Phyllis Caesar, 77, during a robbery.

The men were represented by attorney-at-law Keoma Griffith, who requested for a probation report on his clients be prepared o before sentencing.

State prosecutor Abigail Gibbs had told the court that Khan and Andrews had broken into the two elderly women’s home at Lot 243 South Road and Albert Street. The men ransacked the home and stole money and valuables.

The women's hands and feet were bound and mouths gagged. During the home invasion, the women were strangled. After raiding the women’s home, the men then went to Albouystown to split up their loot.

On October 3, 2019, the women’s motionless bodies were discovered lying face

down in separate bedrooms at their Bourda home.

Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, gave the cause of death of both women as asphyxiation due to suffocation and manual strangulation, compounded by trauma to the head.

The men were charged alongside Phillip Suffrien, 25, also a resident of Albouystown. However, Suffrien was not present in court.

The matter is adjourned until October 24, 2019, for probation report and sentencing.

A reliable source disclosed that residents of the villages spread out along a 4km stretch along the Atlantic Coast are not likely to see the flood waters fully recede until after tomorrow’s spring tide. The economic damage is expected to run into millions of dollars for lost rice crops, cash crops and vegetables, poultry and livestock, household equipment and furniture.

Many residents of Highdam, regarded as ‘the ground zero’ of the salt water intrusion, were up to Tuesday afternoon still unable to return to their homes. “The water receding during the low tides and then coming back in full force during the high tides, though not with as much intensity as on Sunday last,” one resident said. Affected persons were being accommodated by relatives, having turned down an offer by the authorities to be relocated to a shelter. The convict explained that he was angry with himself and decided to take it out on his niece.

Justice Barlow imposed the life sentence, with the possibility of parole after he serves 20 years. He was also ordered to attended anger management classes along with educational classes so that he can be a reformed person.

THE National Library’s book collection has been boosted with a donation of 200 books from the Georgetown Reading and Research Centre known as Bookland.

At the ceremony, which was held on Tuesday at the Bookland Gardens Woolford Avenue, Sandra Persaud, Head of Curriculum Development and Implementation Unit of the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) expressed gratitude to Bookland for its kind donation.

Persaud said the books will help to create a culture of reading and learning. In keeping with its mandate, NCERD is currently working

to put one book in each Guyanese household – a move that can significantly increase the country’s literacy rate.

“We are striving toward improving the literacy level of all Guyanese, we encourage and provide opportunities for all to be literate,” Persaud said.

Man confesses to killing mother-in-law and step-daughter FIVE years after a 55-yearold woman and her nineyear-old granddaughter were killed, while in their home in Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, their killer has confessed to the crime.

Franklin was initially indicted on two counts of murder but opted to plead to the lesser count of manslaughter.

He admitted that on December 18, 2014, at Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, he unlawfully killed his mother-inlaw, Bibi Zalima Khan, and step-daughter, Ashley Boodhoo.

Franklin’s attorney Mark Conway requested a probation report be prepared for his client before sentencing.

State Prosecutor Abigail Gibbs told the court that, on December 18, 2014, Franklin went to his mother-inlaw's home and carried out a ‘chopping spree’, while armed with a cutlass. He

attacked Khan and dealt her several chops with the cutlass before turning his attention to Ashley Boodhoo. The child was chopped about her body.

The Guyana Chronicle had reported that, during the melee, Franklin attacked his reputed wife and dealt her several chops about her body.

The woman managed

to escape from the house and hid in the verandah of a neighbour’s house. She lost her left hand from the wrist down due to the attack. Her friend, Floyd Drakes was allegedly attacked and killed

by Franklin.

In his address to the court, Franklin said that Drakes was his reputed wife’s ‘sweetman’ and he was inside his Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo home However, as it related to the said home, his mother-inlaw was staying over at the time and the property does not belong to her.

Justice Kissoon adjourned the matter until October 16, 2019, for probation report and sentencing.

AG updates Guyanese in Canada on preparation for first oil

ATTORNEY General, Basil Williams, has assured Guyanese living in Canada that steps are being taken to safeguard Guyana’s environment while drilling for oil, when he addressed a meeting there on Saturday.

Perusal of a document prepared by the Department of Energy revealed that the entity was collaborating with the US State Department and Coast Guard along with the local Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to “elaborate a contingency oil spill plan”.

Since this plan is in its second draft stage, there were no specific details available.

It is expected to be finalised by this October. Mr. Williams also indicated that plans are in place to provide training for locals in the areas of occupational health and safety and disaster management specific to the oil and gas industry.

Meanwhile, the Department of Energy, is working on increasing its readiness to deal with the oil boom. To this end, the DoE is collaborating with the Inter-American Bank (IADB) to recruit additional advisory services.

This is in order to create and safeguard production sharing

contract administration processes, and to ensure these are embedded within the DoE. A gas master plan is also being developed.

With respect to readying the DoE’s technical staff, plans are that they will shadow various hired experts such as economists, econometricians, and M&E procurement staff etc. It is foreseen that ultimately, a Ministry of Energy will be established.

Four hospitalised following mystery illness A FAMILY of four was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital on Monday evening after allegedly consuming drinking water at their Number 64 Village, East Berbice, Corentyne home.

According to sources, a woman identified only as ‘Cindy’ along with her husband and their two children, aged one and four, of Haniff Dam, Number 64 Village, were taken to the Skeldon Hospital around 19:00hrs on Monday evening, moments after they drank water they had stored in the home for drinking purposes.

While the details are sketchy, the family reportedly started feeling nauseous and began vomiting and frothing from the mouth, symptoms usually associated with poisoning, shortly after drinking the water.

They were taken to the hospital, where staff there managed to stabilise them after spending Monday night and all of Tuesday under medical care.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that the parents, along with the four-year-old, are stable, and were expected to be released on Tuesday evening, while the one-year-old is still being kept for observation. Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard Captain, Dominic Gilphin, was busted with an illegal firearm, ammunition and marijuana after his vehicle was intercepted at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, on Monday evening.

Reports indicate that the 30 year-old of Hubu Village, East Bank Essequibo had a 30-yearold miner of Luther Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice, as a passenger when he was stopped by law enforcement officers and escorted to the Brickdam Police Station.

SCA 2019 season ends on high note ... VPCC, Islanders upstage Highland Creek

By Frederick Halley TORONTO, Canada - Victoria Park Cricket Club (VPCC) became the first team to capture two Elite League titles while Islanders confirmed their status as the number one team in the Premiere League when the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) 2019 season climaxed at the Ashtonbee playing fields here last Saturday.

After winning the inaugural tournament in 2016 and being runners-up to Hawaiian Arctic Cricket Club (HACC) last year, albeit by forfeiting the final, VPCC stormed back to win a tense battle against Highland Creek on the number one pitch after persistent showers had forced the umpires to reduce the contest

In the other semi-final, Highland Creek won from Ambassadors by 71 runs after reaching 186 for nine in the reduced 44 overs and limiting their opponents to 115 all out in 37.1 overs.

Highland Creek were aiming to repeat history after becoming the first team to cart off both the Elite and Premiere League titles, a feat they achieved in 2017 but had to settle

for the runners-up spots in the both categories.

The Premiere League final saw Highland Creek bat first and reach 108 for eight in 30 overs with opener Ishan Shah being the main contributor with 38 (three fours and a six) while Ali Zaidi supported with 26 (two fours and a six). For the Trinidad & Tobago-based Islanders, Calvin Alexander took two for 18 and Trushil Patel two for 20.

ENGLAND’S World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, West Indies batsman Chris Gayle and Australia’s Steve Smith have made themselves available for The Hundred player draft on October 20.

The inaugural 100-ball competition, which is comprised of eight city-based teams, takes place next summer from July 17 to August 16.

Other big names to have stated their interest include Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, Australia opener David Warner and former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi.

Everest to refurbish existing lawn tennis court

AFTER being dormant for some time, the existing lawn tennis court at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground will be ready for competitive action by October 15.

This disclosure was made yesterday by president Manzoor Nadir, after the club received two timely donations from Insurance giants, Assuria Insurance and New India Assurance companies for the rehabilitation of the Court with immediate effect.

The club president further stated that immediate works will include the installation of solar lights, new mesh, repainting inside of fence and branding by those who will contribute towards the rehabilitation of the court, along with the repainting of the two side screens.

Nadir further stated that the executives intend to make Everest a major lawn tennis venue, with the possibility of making a hard court which

is a criterion listed by the International Lawn Tennis Federation.

Brand Manager of New India Assurance, Selma Rahman, indicated that the Assurance Company is pleased to be on board with the development of the sport. She encouraged the club to continue the upward mobility so that sport can reach a new level locally.

Sanz was found guilty of negotiating bribes in competitions organised by FIFA, CONCACAF, the Caribbean Football Union and the South American Football Confederation between 2012 and 2015.

India cause shock by dropping wicketkeeper Pant VISAKHAPATNAM (India) (AFP) - India yesterday brought Wriddhiman Saha back as wicketkeeper for the first Test against South Africa in a blow to the hopes of rising star Rishabh Pant.

India captain Virat Kohli also gave a vote of confidence to Rohit Sharma, naming him opening batsman ahead of the start of the three-match series today.

The 34-year-old Saha last played a Test more than 18 months ago in South Africa. He gets a new chance because of the poor form of Pant, who had been groomed as the long-term successor to legendary batsman wicketkeeper M.S. Dhoni.

Saha lost his place through injury and Pant initially made the most of his opportunity to showcase his explosive batting talent.

“Saha is fit and fine to go. He is going to start the series for us. His keeping credentials are for everyone to see,” said Kohli, whose side will beat Australia’s record of victory in 10 straight home Test series if they take this series.

Brisbane Heat pull off huge coup, signing AB de Villiers for BBL

AB de Villiers will be playing in the BBL after all, with Brisbane Heat securing one of the biggest signings in the recent history of the competition. de Villiers, who retired from international cricket in 2018, had attracted huge interest from BBL clubs earlier this year but pulled back from committing to playing in Australia in May. However, in a surprise announcement yesterday morning the Heat revealed they had signed de Villiers for the second half of the tournament, including the finals should the Heat get that far. de Villiers will spend Christmas at home in Pretoria and it appears likely he will link up with the Heat around January 6 or 8.

The Heat play Sydney Thunder in Sydney on January 6, but de Villiers appears more likely to play his

first game against Hobart Hurricanes on January 9 at the Gabba.

“You go through moments after retirement when you’re really keen to play then you just want to be at home,” he said. “It’s really difficult to balance that out. Time spent at home and time away, so I’m very selective of where I play at the moment, and the body is getting a bit older so I can’t play too much.”

Aliyah Abrams out of Women’s 400m in Qatar

GUYANA’S medal drought continued at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics after Aliyah Abrams failed to make it to the final of the women’s 400 metres in Doha, Qatar.

Abrams ran 51.71 seconds to finish 5th place in the women’s 400 metres race, which was won by Salwa Eid Naser (49.79 seconds). America’s Phyllis Francis (50.22 seconds) was second and Iga Baumgat-Witan of Poland was third with a time of 51.02 seconds. Abrams’ PB in the 400m is 51.13 seconds.

Farah says he has no tolerance for rule-breakers

LONDON, England (Reuters) - British Olympic champion Mo Farah said yesterday he had no tolerance for anyone who broke the rules after his former coach Alberto Salazar was banned for four years for doping violations.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said Salazar’s punishment was for “orchestrating and facilitating prohibited doping conduct” as head coach of the Nike Oregon Project (NOP), a camp designed primarily to develop U.S. endurance athletes.

“I’m relieved USADA has completed their investigation into Alberto Salazar. I left the Nike Oregon Project in 2017 but I have no tolerance for anyone who breaks the rules or crosses a line,” said Farah in a statement to Sky Sports News.

“A ruling has been made and I’m glad there has finally been a conclusion.”

Salazar stopped coaching Farah, double Olympic champion at both 5 000 and 10 000 metres, in 2017, when the runner decided to move back to England. The Briton said at the time that the doping investigation was not the reason they parted ways.
