HE Stabroek Market area in downtown Georgetown is one of the busiest in all of Guyana. The century-old market itself is one of the iconic structures in the capital city of Guyana. On its southern side is the western end of Georgetown’s oldest street, Brickdam. In fact, Stabroek Market will be 140 years old in 2021.

For over 30 years I have presented news items and commentaries on television, radio and the print media based on happenings and conditions in and around the Stabroek Market. Most of those articles and commentaries had to do with the condition of the market itself and the activities of citizens and visitors. One of the more memorable is climbing to the top of those winding stairs leading to the tower where the inner workings of the clock are located. The view of the city from up there is awesome. At the time, I was reporting on a group of vising tourists from Suriname.

The Stabroek Market has dominated the downtown commercial area of the city and was the focus of a lavish musical stage production entitled Stabroek Fantasy. That landmark musical was written by educator Cecile Nobrega in collaboration with Guyana’s all-time prima ballerina Helen Taitt in 1956.

“Stabroek Fantasy” presented a super glossy image of Stabroek Market and the daily activities around it. The show was extremely popular according to theatre veteran and retired Media executive, Ricardo Smith. “It filled the new Queen’s College to capacity and was a sensation at the time,” he stated.

Now let’s fast forward from the “Stabroek Fantasy” of 1956 to the “Stabroek Reality” of 2020. For the better part, the current situation is not as attractive as one would like. Here is my personal fantasying of what it could and should be; no vehicular traffic on Water

policemen, they resisted arrest and then is when all hell broke loose. The suspects were subsequently subdued and taken to the Ruimveldt police out-post.

There is, of course, the other side of the Stabroek Reality - the good and professional minibus operators, which I state from personal experience. Riding in a Route 45 minibus in Georgetown, the bus was flagged down by a few persons who had obviously come from the Georgetown Public Hospital. One, an elderly African man, told the Indian conductor that he did not have money. “A’right, come in,” was the response from the

All clean as a whistle. I also visualise the name of a prominent citizen of Georgetown given to that roundabout.

Vendors encouraged to wear even more colourful attire as they sing out their invitation, “Come Uncle. Woh yoh buying today?” And at the end of every year, there is a special walk-about by the Mayor and the Minister of Local Government. Of course, those are all my personal dreams which I prefer to share, rather than be only critical of life around me.

Citizens who have to do business in and around the Stabroek market, experience the reality of mayhem and madness daily in the minibus parks. Many times I make my way down to the Stabroek minibus park just before sunrise to see and observe for myself, the city waking up to another day. I have reported on the way the minibus operators behave - including the touts.

There was the occasion when Commissioner of Police, the late Henry Greene bellowed into the ears of reporters at a media briefing, “TOUTING WILL STOP” but years later touting remains alive and well.

On August 15, there was a scene at the Stabroek Market Route 47 Mini Bus Park which was caught on video and posted on Facebook for the world to see. It showed what can only be described as a “melee”. About 15 to 20 persons were involved, including about six policemen and a minibus. One has to say that those law officers were temporarily overwhelmed while trying to arrest two wanted men. The policemen were being roughed-up as they tried to arrest 28-yearold Troy Glasgow, who was wanted by the police for attempted murder and robbery under arms. Also wanted was 19-year-old Joseph Thomas.

They make their passengers feel safe and special. I have experienced others like them around the country.

During the latter months of 2015, there was a massive clean-up of Georgetown including the Stabroek Market area, which pleased citizens immensely. And while there is always more work to be done, praise must be showered on the city cleansing officer Walter Narine who continues to do a fantastic job. Georgetown is certainly on its way to being even more beautiful and orderly than it ever was during the colonial era. In all of that, the Stabroek Market should lead the way.

Guyana’s beautiful capital city with some of the most awesome wooden buildings on the planet could attract many more tourists in the future. The months and years ahead could be like a merger of fantasy and reality as the city fathers and city mothers together, dream dreams of Georgetown becoming a shining city on a mudflat where citizens treat each other with respect and human dignity. That will certainly be a merger of fantasy and reality in the Stabroek Market area.

By Naomi Parris R E G NANCY is an important time in a woman’s life as she is preparing to bring new life into the world, however during this time women’s bodies go through an immense transformation.

During pregnancy and postpartum, women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies tend to increase irrespective of how satisfied they were prior to the pregnancy. Some of these changes can be difficult to deal with or very uncomfortable.

What makes it even harder for women, is that during the time of pregnancy there aren’t many fashionable fits that they can find in the local clothing stores during these changes.

Cognizant of this, local designer Natalya Thomas has launched her ‘Mom Life’ collection 2020 under the brand Talya.

“The line is basically to inspire women. Before and after or during the process of pregnancy, you can still be a fabulous mom,” she said.

Thomas, who is expecting her second child, disclosed to the Pepperpot Magazine that she was disappointed that she could not find any fashionable pieces to compliment her body and given the hard time she had during her first pregnancy, she decided to create her own fashion designs for herself and other expecting mothers. “[Sometimes] you just find leggings here and there, nothing fashionable - nothing unique nothing that can actually compliment a woman’s body,” she said.

She noted that after giving birth, it may take a while for a woman’s body to get back to the way it was before, or it may never completely return to the way it looked before pregnancy.

Although these changes are natural, some women may struggle with keeping a positive body image during and after pregnancy.

“Another thing is I wanted to make them feel confident in their flesh, after giving birth you have that belly, you have that tummy left so I’m also bringing in the belly band that helps support during and after pregnancy,” she said.

Thomas added that she has also added a few extra pieces to help new mommies adjust to their bodies just after giving birth.

She noted that the response from other women esOne of Thomas’ pecially new mothers have been exceptional since this is more elegant pieces one of the first of its kind in Guyana’s fashion industry. for an evening out “The response has been very good in terms of persons liking the idea. Thomas added that there are also a few unique pieces for women who wish to have maternity photoshoots, during and after pregnancy as well as a few casual pieces that can be worn during a day outing or

even to a Sunday service at church.

Thomas, who described herself as a creative, told the Pepperpot Magazine that she took inspiration from the regular clothing she would have worn before her pregnancy and added a little flavour and a few adjustments to fit the changes of an expecting mother.

“I was inspired by other pieces that I would have seen on the internet or doing research but I created my own unique touch to it. That is what makes it different, it has its own uniqueness inside,” she said.

Additionally, Thomas noted that she is working on creating her own fabric and prints for the fashion line. “One of the other things I’m working on is doing my own prints.

I’m working in terms of my own artwork and I’ll be using my own materials being printed so that I can stand out, so it’s not just going to be a piece of material that you find at [a local fabric store], or Bourda market,” she said.

The young woman noted that she considers the initiative to be a women empowerment movement that will help inspire women and promote body positivity since the line is not only focused on expecting mothers.

law enforcement officer w h o works at the Anti-Narcotics Unit At the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is creating much spark on the local scene with his small business as he has been providing jobs and mentorship f o r s e v e ral young men who re s i d e i n depressed rural communities.

Twenty-five-

year-old Nayman Gill who is also a youth activist told the Pepperpot Magazine that he took notice of the number of young men who were out of a job during the chaos of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and he felt the need to take action.

The young man birthed a lawn and environmental care service called OGN Superb which offers, lawn mowing, land clearing, drainage cleaning and other services.

“I started to think about those who were depending on persons who are working to get a little money from and I started to think what I can do to help out during the midst

of this [pandemic],” he said.

He added, “I thought how I can generate income while at the same time help the unemployment rate during this COVID-19 period. It dawned upon me just as you need a haircut you need your lawn cleaned.”

Gill disclosed that he started the business on his own and reached out to a few young men who he thought would be interested in the initiative. He noted that after seeing a great response from customers as well as youths who were looking for a parttime job, he decided to register the business and take it to another level.

“I started it out weeding. I started doing the job and I started to get money and you know something I said let me get this business registered. After registering it, I started to reach out to persons, “he said.

Embarking on a hair journey

In as much as they say, ‘it’s only hair’, wearing natural hairstyles is a civil rights issue for people of African descent in Guyana,” said, Marissa Scott. She is a past delegate of the Miss Emancipation Pageant. Hair; to some, it’s just a few strands on their head that can be styled to suit one’s everyday attire but for girls like Marissa, it means so much more.

As such, the Miss Emancipation Queen team initiated a project by the name of “The 2020 Emancipation Hair Stories”. It was birthed from one of their pageantry themes: “I am Professional”.

Every year the committee of the Miss Emancipation Pageant would select a fitting theme that is solely unique to the delegates participating but natural hair and pageantry have been a constant problem. Hence, their organisation took it upon themselves to highlight the discrimination faced by Afro-Guyanese with natural hair, using their pageant platform.

Quite a few of their delegates over the years have shared disheartening stories of the discrimination they have faced in the Guyanese school system and workforce. Gabrielle Cummings, a member of the organisation stressed: “It’s appalling to know that in this new liberal era there are rules and restrictions that still exist mainly because they are rooted in the

archaic Eurocentric beauty standard forcing our students from a very young age to make permanent modifications to their appearance to suit the rules.”

The Miss Emancipation team wants to also highlight the “hair bias” society may have. For instance, the same hairstyles can be worn by different persons of different textures yet individuals with ‘type 4’ or “kinky” hair is seen as inappropriate. The team stated that in society, there are countless high profile professionals with natural hair, worn and styled to their desire and it is of no hindrance to the quality of work and services they provide.

The Miss Emancipation team notes that: “By sharing our stories publically, we hope to bring awareness to this type of systemic abuse that still plagues our society; one that must be curbed.” The team went on to say: “More importantly, we as professionals in the Miss Emancipation organisation are putting our stories out there to hopefully lift the spirits of little boys and girls who are criticised and ridiculed for their hair to know that the opinions of those who live with their eyes shrouded by systematic racism shouldn’t be a barrier to success”.

2020 Emancipation Hair Stories is a social media campaign aimed at raising awareness on the institutionalised bias against black hair in Guyana whilst empowering black students and professionals to embrace their

heritage. The initiative aims to address the systemic bias in schools and workplaces. The team is asking persons to share their stories of discrimination they faced as a result of archaic work-

place policies and school rules that police black hair.

Persons can message the group on Facebook at Miss Emancipation, to tell them their hair story. The Miss Emancipation’s President; Dr. Melissa Varswyk en-

couraged young black girls and boys by saying; “We can’t say we stand for equality until we fully accept that everyone is differently equal.”

H I S w e e k ’s column is one of those where I try to step back and reconcile my thoughts and feelings, with what I write in this space. In this column, I have the freedom of thinking (even imagining) about what is possible, but I believe I also have the responsibility of encouraging at least one person to do so too. Only then, I believe, can we ever hope to realise our everevolving vision of a better Guyana.

A few weeks ago, my editor suggested that I include my email address at the end of these columns so that

persons could have a way of contacting me and perhaps, engaging me on whatever it is I write about. Then, I couldn’t imagine the alacrity readers would have for the option of engaging with me and within a few weeks, my inbox became filled with rich conversations. Of all the columns I’ve written, my attempts at navigating race relations have seemed to be the ones that attract greater attention and engagement.

This past week, however, a Professor, whose work I wrote about, reached out to me after someone sent him my column. Many of the scholars who study and write about Guyana are people who I admire, because of their efforts to try to understand my country, and because they use what they have found to propose solutions for a better Guyana. I’ve always wondered, though, do academics ever feel frustrated knowing that their solutions could create a better Guyana, but there is a lethargic approach to implementing these?

I used this opportunity to ask the Professor this, and he replied: “The ideas are meant to help with thinking about what is possible.”

So, we have a new government now and I read the news and I try to see what policy direction this new government hopes to takeparticularly in the sectors I am interested in. I want to see how much of what is possible we hope to achieve.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr has been one of the more active ministers since the inauguration. He has been meeting stakeholders and attempting to garner an understanding of what his role over the next few years entails. No doubt, this is commendable. I see his vested interest in Sports and I hope this translates to a greater focus on Sports Development, not only through upgrading sport facilities but also in focusing on developing existing and novel Sports programmes which can provide opportunities for Guyanese to hone their skills and make careers for themselves. There are many, many more Chantoba Brights in our population, I’m sure.

On the flip side, I await the Minister’s engagement through his youth portfolio. It is all good and well to talk about youth development and giving opportunities to youth, during the election period, but now, I would hope that he also focuses on skills training and job readiness for youth, and ensuring that Guyana becomes a more inclusive place for young people- particularly in business, and in politics and decision-making. The National Youth Policy has been languishing for some

time now, and that too needs some attention.

My final thought on the work of Minister Ramson (and yes, I do have a vested interest in his portfolio) is the agenda of ‘National Healing’ floated by President Irfaan Ali. Again, I will say, this agenda is a noble and much-needed one, particularly when you consider the fractured, plural society we live in. However, there has been little to no indication of how this will be facilitated, or even what timeline is in place. We no longer have the social cohesion ministry, which I don’t have any qualms with, but imagine that this agenda should fall under the purview of Minister Ramson given that he has responsibility for Culture too. The events over the past few months emphasise the need for national healing, through grassroots engagement- not using a top-down approach.

Speaking about the events of the past few months, constitutional reform remains any tenet that requires dire attention. Senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies (and a Guyanese!), Arif Bulkan has drawn attention to the hybrid constitutional architecture that Guyana possesses (a fusion of the inherited Westminster system and that of a Republic) which allows for an authoritarian-like government (articulated in his paper “Constitutional Architecture and the Production of Authoritarianism, 2019).

Additionally, due to the historical proethnic voting in Guyana and the ‘Winnertakes-all’ electoral system, places Guyana in a governance conundrum. Constitutional reform, which continues to be something clamoured for year after year, needs to be seriously engaged in. Mr. Bulkan contends that the reforms needed “... requires changes not only to the existing electoral system but also to the processes for selection of the wider bureaucracy and perhaps even the judiciary.” I imagine that reform could also help National Healing, as it has been accepted that the ethnic insecurities underpin our pro-ethnic voting tradition.

I could keep writing about my thoughts of what’s possible, at least over the next five years, but I’m already over my word limit.

However, the few things I’ve briefly touched on remain those areas I think about quite a bit, nowadays.

H I S week the Pepperpot Magazine journeyed to Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara.

It is a fairly large community with internal streets and several pedestrian walkways (small streets) which extend from the Public Road, way down to the foreshore and the backlands on the other side.

Long Pond, Side-Line Dam and Duncan, Murphy and Singh Streets are all part of the village.

Sisters Village is between Wales and Good Intent communities and the residents are welcoming folk.

The population is about 600 people who had depended heavily on the nearby Wales Sugar Estate which closed its doors a few years ago, as such, many were forced to seek employment outside the village.

Sisters Village has a lovely concrete green-painted mosque which is located by a turn on the Public Road, a landmark building, several churches, a mandir and many shops and other small businesses.

The Public Road is lined with shops and other businesses and is home to cattle, rice and cash crops farmers.

The people of Sisters Village work within both the public and private sector, some are fishermen, miners and a handful of entrepreneurs.

Sisters Village is a lively village with people from all walks of life, who co-exist as neighbours in relative peace and harmony.

It is considered a country-side place and no one is sure how the village got its name but say according to traditional stories, it was named after the Dutch plantation owners like most villages.

The nearest Health Centre

is at Good Intent, a neighbouring village and the schools are in Patentia and other villages.

According to residents, Sister’s Village is a good place to live simple and raise a family.

The Pepperpot Magazine met one of a few teachers, who reside within the village.

He is Gregory Gunraj, whose father once operated the most popular village ‘rum shop’ which is conveniently located on the Public Road.

After the pandemic hit Guyana, schools were forced to close indefinitely in March this year, however, in an effort to engage the students in meaningful learning, he is having extra lessons.

Gunraj told the Pepperpot Magazine that the extra lessons are held via Zoom at the head teacher’s residence at La Grange.

“It was decided that since Mathematics is a compulsory

With classes out, the teacher disclosed that he yearns to return to the classroom setting to have interactive sessions with students.

“This is probably what I miss the most about school because in my class I have a teacher-friendly policy so students talk freely as it relates to classwork,” he said.

Apart from teaching as his first love, Gunraj is very passionate about sports and functions as the cricket coach at his school for the boy’s team.

He is also an avid cricket fan and would usually encourage the students to showcase their sports talent.

Since the closure of schools countrywide, Gunraj had to find things to do and it was the opportune time for him to expand on his love for music.

He is a part-time disc jockey (DJ) on social media on Fridays from 17:00hrs to 20:00hrs where he promotes the Starlite Heavy Hard Hitters Sound System which is owned by his friend.

“I have a deep appreciation for music since as a young boy growing up because our rum shop was my dad’s baby and he used to play music and I became fascinated with music in general,” he said.

Sadly, his father, Oswald Gunraj, is now 75 years old and is bed-ridden as such, the management of the rum shop was too much for himself and mother so they decided to close it.

OO often we tend to forget the work of our postal workers who deliver the mails to our homes whether it is raining or there is bright sunshine.

This task is not a walk in the park it entails long hours and exposure to the elements of the weather delivering mails through several communities stretching for miles.

As a postal employee or what we would refer to as the ‘Post Girl or the Post Boy’ their efforts are almost not recognised enough.

As a frontline worker attached to the Wales Post Office, Allison Osborne is taking the necessary precautions to protect herself from the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

She is also wearing her face masks and has her sanitising spray to cleanse her hands when the need arises.

The 34-year-old told the

Pepperpot Magazine that she would begin her day at 7:00hrs at the Wales Post Office after sorting out mails and would leave the location for her daily mail delivery.

This is after she would have completed household chores including cooking at home.

Osborne is a resident of Bagotville Village and was at the time serving mails in Sisters Village when the Pepperpot Magazine spotted her.

When asked how she would cope with the sun she said she has grown accustomed to the humid conditions.

She was on her personal bicycle delivering mails in the village as part of her daily task.

The mail delivery would cease at 16:00hrs when she is off-duty and heads home to her family.

The mother of three would deliver mails to the villages of Sisters, Good Intent, Belle Vue, Stanleytown, Le Retraite and Toevlugt, all on the West Bank Demerara.

Osborne related that she never knew she would become a postal worker but at the time she was job-hunting and she was introduced to the job.

“I was looking for a job 10 years ago and had a few

are friends and when it is hot some of them would offer me a cool drink or beverage and it is a nice gesture which demonstrates that people do care about others,” she said.

Osborne has a friendly disposition making her very approachable and easy to talk to.

“This job is not boring because I get to meet and interact with people in different villages and I find it interesting because I like my job and over the years I have made a lot of friends,” she said.

Osborne said that she would make her job more enjoyable by listening to music through her cell

so I never was bitten by a dog yet and I would leave the mails in the post box or on the gate where it can be found. If people are at home I would hand them the mails,” she said.

Osborne is a mother to three girls ages 16, 14 and four years old and they are at home until she returns home from work.

“I like my job and I will continue doing it for as long as I can because it is my only source of income and I don’t see myself as a doing an odd job, it is a serious job which requires professionalism and good communication skills,” she said.

The Councillor related that the cane lands have been converted to private use by residents, who have 500 acres of rice cultivation.

Before Charles gave birth to her first child, she took a break from the job but was working at Woodlands Hospital for seven years.

Her baby is 11 months old and she plans to return to work in the near future once she gets someone to take care of her child.

“Sometimes I am bored because for nine months I did not work and I miss my job but with the pandemic and a young baby to tend to I have no choice at present but will return to my profession,” she said.

Y L O N Granville is a resident of Sisters Village and is considered the village barber where the men of the community would gather to have their hair cut or beards trimmed.

The barbershop comprises a small wooden building with a shed with a wooden

table and chairs to accommodate a game of dominoes were added as part of entertaining customers awaiting their turn to be groomed.

Granville stated that over time the place, which is located at Sisters Village Public Road, has become a ‘chill spot’ for locals.

“The men would come and gaff and be groomed and it has become a daily occurrence here, they are here,” he said.

The 48-year-old related that he purchased a freezer and started selling cold beverages as a side business.

However, he has been in the barbering since his youthful days he was always fascinated with hair designs and began practising until he became good enough to start his own small business.

He is familiar with most villagers especially the men and youths who visit his barbershop and is a well-

known fellow.

“As the village barber customers would call and say they have to work or go out and require my services as early as 5:30hrs and I would accommodate them then go back to rest since it is all part of the job,” he said.

The father of two stated that normally he would open for 8:00hrs and close at 20:00hrs in keeping with the curfew.

Sisters Village for the past 21 years but is originally from Stanleytown.

Granville explained that after the Wales Sugar Estate closed a few years ago mos,t people who depended heavily on the sugar industry had to leave the village for the very first time to seek employment in the city.

“If the estate didn’t close some of the men in this village would never have gone to town for work because they work at the estate and prefer to stay within the village,” he said.

Band and would be of service for birthdays and other events.

He used to be at the Garage in Aubrey Barker Road, South but as a result of the pandemic, all that has ceased.

“I does only take private work, that is, small gatherings such as birthdays where I would play my One-Man Band,” he said.

THE FACE MASK VENDOR Next door to the barber is Ileasha Cadogan, she is the mother of four and a single parent.

She has a roadside stand selling washable fabric face masks during the day and in the afternoon she would sell bread, eggs, milk and cheese, sausage and hand sanitizers

from a tailor in Berbice and he would leave it in the city for her to re-sell.

The washable fabric face masks come in various colours and it is washed and sanitised in a sealed plastic bag and ready to be used.

She also has surgical masks as part of her offering at her stand.

“I was home and wanted a job so I started my own small business and it is something to earn as well as pass time,” she said.

Cadogan added that the small roadside business is convenient for her because she doesn’t have to leave home for work with other people and it is within a short distance from her home.

The 34-year-old began selling face masks in April this year and it is a small business that is growing even though things are slow.

She explained that she would buy the face masks

from 7:30hrs and go up until 20:00hrs to accommodate working customers.

Her 16-year-old son would assist her with selling at the roadside stand and she is quite pleased with the help.

I D E L L Washington is a resident of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, who has lived all her life in that community as a vendor at the nearby Good Intent Health Centre.

She used to sell homemade snacks and cold beverages at the Good Intent Health Centre for more than 10 years but had to cease that small business because of ill health after she suffered a fall.

Today, she has intense arthritis pains in both knees and is unable to walk for long distances, even the walk to her home from the health centre was a challenge. Washington also suffers from hypertension.

When the Pepperpot Magazine caught up with the 73-year-old, she was returning home from a medical check-up at the health centre and was making her way home slowly.

She was assisted by her granddaughter, Alexia Hercules. The 10-year-old would go with her wherever she has to go out.

In her younger days, she used to do ‘domestic work’ with some people from Stan-

leytown Village and after they passed away she had to look for another job.

Singh recently gave birth to a baby girl and is at home taking care of her newborn.

During her pregnancy, she did not open her business because she was afraid of contracting the virus.

Singh has a wide client base on that corridor and she is being asked to do jobs but she is hesitant presently owing to the rising COVID-19 cases being recorded daily.

“I miss working, no doubt about that but then I have to look at my health and that of my family so it is in my best interest to remain closed until it is safe to re-open,” she said.

Pretty’s Beauty Salon specialises in bleaching, relaxing, colouring, haircutting styles, cold waving, braiding, extensions, facials, manicure, pedicure and nail artistry.

Singh stated that being home is not easy because you are confined and cannot go out because of the Coronavirus but she is trying to occupy her time with chores.

The mother of two reported that she is hoping for the best outcome because there is a need for her to return to work as per normal.

needed to do more and not just say ‘hold it up in this COVID time’ and say ‘everything is going to be alright’. I need to show them that there is still hope during this terrible time,” he said.

In sharing a testimony, Gill disclosed that one of his employees have returned to school after earning income to further his education. This, he added, proves that his business is more than just about earning money but rather about empowering young men to better themselves.

“He has been doing some online course through the money he has been earning through OGN,” he said.

Gill noted that he started the business to destigmatise the societal label that has been placed on young men who come from rural communities.

“A lot of them look up to me even the older ones.

They would call me big brother even though I’m younger than them so I

try to guide them in such a way that it doesn’t matter what kind of job you do …I tell them to take pride in everything that you do.

With that I try to teach them standards for themselves,” he explained.

He added that he wants the young men who come in contact with him to be able to better themselves and move on to greater, positive and bigger things in life that will mould them into great men as well as set examples for the younger generation.

A BROTHERHOOD/ FATHER FIGURE Having lost his father at a young age, Gill noted that he struggled through his teenage years to deal with the stones that were thrown to him as a young adolescent boy growing up in a world filled with all kinds of negativity.

However he learnt how to fend for himself and stayed out of trouble, but there are many young men like him today who do not have a stable home

or a mentor to guide them.

Cognizant of this, he noted that he has been providing mentorship for the young men who sought employment from him teaching them to rise above all odds and break free from the societal chains persons would have placed on them.

“I raised against all odds and that is what I want to do with the guys I have employed especially those who I would have employed from certain depressed communities…don’t fall prey to the labels of society or the community that they are from, you can rise above all odds .I am a living testimony,” he said.

As of to date, Gill has 12 employees and is looking to expand his business with clientele and local community projects.

I decided to exit the bus at New Garden Street and walk the rest to Bourda Market while ecalling a National Geographic article I had read hours

I was at the time doing a graphic magazine on HIV-AIDS, and had seen this young woman at the clinic. I indicated to ‘TIMES’ that AIDS was in the air and that he should take care. He told me that a brethren had told him about the fact that this young woman was infected but love trumped reason and ‘For all Times’ was fatally hit by the ’Big Truck’ as HIV-AIDS is called. I doubt he died happily. The young lady outlived him but passed on too.

Today, we are enveloped by the Coronavirus pandemic, and two recent experiences have alerted me to the prevalence of the phenomenon of defiance bravado. I commute by public transportation, but avoid a category of minibuses I call ‘Lil Bway Bus’ because the music is too loud, and most times the choice of music is a simulation of sound rather than music, they also have overcrowding, and the tendency to travel too fast. I stopped this bus on Vlissengen Road, everyone in the bus at that point had on a mask. The next stop, they picked up six or seven young employees from a fast food outlet. They were all forced into the bus, and none wore a mask, they were- as

How do we in Guyana fix a wall around our climbing COVID-19 infections? Do fast food owners contribute by principle to supply masks to their employees or not, as revealed in the experience I observed? They should.

I’ve seen lines of citizens waiting to purchase

fast food, and this is a crucial area. Why did no member of this group of young employees have a mask on upon exiting work? Surely the health of workers, especially in the ‘fast food’ industry is of exceptional value, pertaining to the person to person service they present to the eager public and the food they offer. Somehow the force of the message and

its importance beyond infection to bodily after-effects need to be expanded. The usage again, I emphasise, of Edutainment methods that have proven effective elsewhere continue to elude professionals here. Added drama and illustrated skits that will attract attention can aid in sensitising the easily distracted who will not read more than three or four paragraphs.

O D AY I would like to talk about an institution that I greatly respect, admire and have worked with for some time. Phoenix Recovery Project (PRP) is an inpatient drug rehabilita-

tion facility in Mon Repos. I would like to discuss this as I know many aren’t aware of the help available for substance abuse within our community. Being an inpatient facility means that the clients live within the facility and work together to become sober and remain abstinent.

Phoenix was founded in 2000 and is registered under the Friendly Society Act. It is the only inpatient facility in Guyana who admits both men and women for long term substance abuse care.

PRP was awarded the Silver Medal of Service as they have dedicated over 10 years to

good public, government and industry service within our society. Phoenix has 24-hour staff, including live-in house mothers and fathers.

The clients are there for many different types of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, crack- cocaine, prescription drugs and sometimes, a combination of many.

There are also clients present that have mental health issues, especially due to drug use such as marijuana-induced psychosis. For the clients that do show signs of mental illness, PRP has a relationship with Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where the clients will go together during allocated clinic days to get the medication they may require to healthily come off of their chosen substances.

Phoenix has worked with people from all 10 administrative regions of Guyana as well as individuals from Cayenne, Brazil, Suriname and Trinidad. They work with individuals from any ethnic, socio-economic or religious background.

When someone enters

Phoenix for recovery, they are entitled to a one week detox.

This means they get that time to rest, without having to participate in the activities available (which I will get into). This detox week is important as the abusers need to adjust to a new way of life, one obviously without drugs.

Once this detox week is completed, the client begins taking part in all of the daily rituals/ routines.

This starts off at 05:00hrs with devotion, then breakfast and goes on to daily classes which include relapse prevention, occupational therapy, computer training, disease concept, self- help meetings and general educational and experimental workshops. They get exercise by going into the National Park or running on the sea-wall.

The clients are also encouraged to write daily logs about their feelings/emotions, which is known as a huge help during recovery.

The average stint per individual is 6-9 months, six being the minimum amount allowed.

The Phoenix Recovery Project has high success rates, which I’ve seen myself as I used to teach classes there. The clients love to be there, are cooperative and supportive of each other.

F I am to be honest, I have and I still am struggling with having a full acceptance and love for my body; most importantly, my weight. I have struggled for most of my teenage years with being overweight and I can tell you that it has been a personal torment, one I wish on no one to ever endure. I have gained weight the second I de-

to note that there are a lot of “chunky” men who feel isolated because of how they look as well. The non-stereotypical “fat” women and men alike are ridiculed and shamed for their appearance. They are judged and are given labels of who they are and what traits they hold, before even opening their mouths to speak. “Fat people are lazy and sluggish”, “They eat all day long”, “They are ignorant to a healthy lifestyle”,

I have been subjected to the way I look for most of my life. I am a tall, browned-skinned girl with a broad nose, curly hair and a “thick-up” body structure. I am not your typical Fashion Nova- Instagram model type of girl.

Their appearance should not be the centre of how you perceive them.

I have recently made a Facebook post that inspired me to do this piece.

The comments and shares gave merit to my perspective on how we can better speak about a healthy lifestyle without the need to degrade and judge others based on their appearance. In my post, I stated: “You are quick to call people ‘fat’ without giving it a second thought.

You don’t consider if they

have an extreme eating disorder. You don’t consider if their parents overfed and created abnormal eating patterns for them as a child that is difficult to break as an adult. You will never consider the mental rollercoaster they have to endure when their body is exhausted through overeating but their mind and cravings keep saying, ‘Don’t stop’. You don’t consider the disgust they already see every time they look into the mirror, it’s truly an emotional breakdown.”

Just as I stated in my post, I will also say it here: “I’m in no way, shape or form promoting obesity or unhealthy eating patterns and lifestyle behaviours but we ought to be mindful of what we say and how we treat others.

None of us truly knows the types of stories and horror that hides behind smiles. Normalise having effective and healthy conversations about weight loss and healthy lifestyles without the need to degrade and belittle.” Yes, calling someone “fat” is an adjective that we all unconsciously use but it’s deeper than that. Let us be mindful of how we approach this topic and always keep in mind that “fat-shaming” all in the name of “tough love” does not always end well.

From time to time this column has carried offerings on common foods which consumers use but of which they know very little. Today, we will have a short discourse on coconut oil, the oil of Guyana, just as olive oil is the oil of Spain, Italy, Israel and several other Mediterranean countries.

In the early years of the 19th century, cooking oil was imported. When indentured Indian immigrants began to permanently settle in Guyana, they began to grow coconuts to produce oil, first for familial, then for limited commercial usage. Their folk method of production could never be able to satisfy the market and some cooking oil always had to be imported to supplement the local production. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the firm of Wieting and Richter, began to industrially produce refined coconut oil and in a short time, they captured the entire cooking oil market. At the beginning of the 1940s, the Maharaja Oil Mills which owned coconut plantations began to produce oil and shared the market with Wieting and Richter. Guyana had become fully self-sufficient in the product and during the World War II years when there were shortages of all foodstuffs, there was never a shortage of cooking oil.

Until very recently, coconut oil was used almost solely for culinary purposes.

It was used to produce coconut milk widely employed in cooking; to produce bread and pastries such as coconut biscuits and in various food

preparations such as “cookup” and “metemgee”. It is a ubiquitous food-mix in Guyana. It was also widely used in making confections such as conkie, barfi, sugar-cakes and a variety of other sweets.

It was even exported to sweet makers abroad who would use it to produce toffees. It should be mentioned that the water of the unripe coconuts is used as a refreshing drink and as a convalescent food.

In passing, it should be mentioned that there was an old custom of anointing babies and small children with coconut oil before going to bed. Parents followed the custom mechanistically, but it saved children from bites of the malaria mosquito at a time when malaria was endemic in Guyana and was responsible for much of its mortality.

Coconut oil was in general use in Guyana until the 1970s when data, later suspected as emanating from foreign Oil Industry sources, convinced the consumer market that coconut oil contained “bad” cholesterol and was dangerous to health.

This campaign against coconut oil was highly successful and consumers now used only foreign oils such as olive, corn, soya or canola.

Then, just over a decade ago, the worldwide narrative radically changed and coconut oil was regarded as the wonder oil of the world, even better than olive oil.

Coconut oil is liberally endowed with lauric acid which has great antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties and this allows it to be used medicinally.

We mention below several non-culinary uses of it: It is a healthy skin moisturiser and is very easily absorbed. Rubbing it into the cuticles results in stronger nails. It could be used as a hair conditioner or hairdressing since it could fight off dandruff if massaged into the scalp.

It is an excellent makeup remover. If one suffers from acne, a small amount of coconut oil rubbed on the face would relieve the inflammation and redness.

It soothes sunburn. It is used for body massaging since it has a lubricant quality and is easily absorbed. It helps to eliminate body odours and a few drops in the armpit would kill the bacteria. It is an effective treatment for scrapes, scratches and superficial cuts and provides a barrier against dust and bacteria. It relieves bug bites and bee stings.

It has many household uses: It could silence squeaking hinges; could treat leather and prevent dry rot; rubbing wooden utensils and furniture with the oil would both preserve and brighten them; it removes rust by rubbing the oil on the rust-affected surface and leaving it for a few hours before wiping off; could clean off grease from small motors.

Good quality Pomeroon coconut oil could be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture’s outlet in Brickdam and the Guyana Marketing Corporation in addition to the supermarkets.

BACKGROUND Following the terrorist attack which hit the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, killing 22 people in 2003, this day seeks to raise including Sergio Vieira de Mello, UN’s top representative in Iraq; prompted the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution 5 years later, designating August 19 as World Humanitarian Day. While this is just one day, we can’t ignore the plight of millions of people around the world. This awareness of these issues is an effort to expedite the necessary interventions.

As the world continues to battle the novel COVID-19 pandemic, aid workers are overcoming unprecedented hurdles to assist people in humanitarian crises around the world. Let us pay special tribute to these real-life heroes who have committed their lives to help others under these extreme circumstances.

THE CLIMATE CHANGE CRISIS MADE WORSE BY COVID -19 As the world battles to emerge from the COVID -19 pandemic, we cannot ignore the fact that climate change is also a humanitarian crisis. Undoubtedly, the impacts of climate change are the worst for the poor and vulnerable. Increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have increased risks to food, security, health, water, security, energy and livelihoods. Think about how many people are displaced due to climate change and now have to battle this dreaded pandemic.

According to the United Nations Global Humanitarian Overview report (2020), in 2020, nearly 168 million people will need humanitarian assistance and protection. This represents 1 in about 45 people in the world and is the highest figure in decades.

Funding of $28.8 billion is needed to enable the United Nations and our partner organisations to reach nearly 109 million of the most vulnerable people with life-saving assistance. Given this stark revelation, urgent and collective efforts are needed to rescue and restore humanity.

We join the campaign to recognize the selfless humanitarians who continue to save and protect lives despite conflict, insecurity, lack of access and risks linked to COVID-19. Additionally, we continue to applaud the efforts of aid workers who are bringing relief in the midst of an environmental crisis exacerbated by COVID 19.

F a quarter of your liver is lost through accident or if such a portion is surgically removed, it will amazingly grow back. This four-pound miracle machine filters more than two pints of blood per minute, screening and eliminating impurities from the system. But like the liver, the chewing apparatus is an embattled organ, constantly under attack by a variety of damaging agents, as a result of our constant abuse. Yet the teeth and related structures struggle faithfully and persistently to maintain equilibrium by demonstrating their remarkable qualities of defence.

Thirty-five days after the sperm fertilises the egg, the teeth begin to form. At this point in the development of the embryo which is only three quarters of an inch long , not even the eyes nor the sex organs have been formed. It is even widely believed that this fact alone is enough to convince anyone of how much priority nature places on the teeth.

During the time the child is between six and thirty months old, ten primary teeth appear from each jaw. At first a tough fibrous sheet protects each young tooth. Then the enamel develops to a hardness of nearly one third that of steel. To further prevent destruction, it has the natural ability to increase its resistance against chemical attack by fluoride. But despite all these valiant defence mechanisms, many parents and guardians continue to waste the prevailing good fortune by not doing enough to prevent tooth decay from occurring in these hapless children.

The consequence of not caring the so-called baby teeth usually reflects negatively in the permanent teeth which erupt within six to twenty years. Deformed crowns, crowding (malocclusion) and retained teeth are only a few of the negative effects. Healthy teeth can withstand over twenty thousands pounds per square inch of pressure while in use. The eight groups of ligament fibres which hold a tooth in its socket, can cushion tremendous force without eliciting pain.

As teeth wear down with age they grow out to compensate for this loss in length. The pulps become smaller and produce differentiated fibres making toothache increasingly less likely as the person becomes older. In addition, if the person develops a carie, the surrounding dentin attempts to isolate that decayed the decayed patch from the rest of the tooth in an effort to prevent pain and suffering. Nature provides secondary dentin which is nerveless and therefore incapable of sensitivity or pain.

Perhaps if we should be in a position to closely accompany the process of aggression and defence that takes place constantly in almost every part of our body, we may be more sympathetic towards care and prevention. Whether it is God or evolution that is accountable for such an extraordinary machine we call the human body, that question is not as important as its innate perfect design. There is in place the protection devices and the perpetual tendency to re-establish a healthy state even after disease.

If only we could see how each cell, tissue and organ struggle to overcome the effects of our blunders, complacency, betrayal and cruelty due to carelessness. Always, when some clinical symptom emerges, it means that our teeth has the fight against the enemy. Who is the enemy? We are. Every time we neglect to implement proper oral care we automatically become an enemy to the well-being of our dental health.

It is widely accepted that every Christian sorrowfully abhors the thought that Jesus in his plenitude and benevolence was crucified. If indeed there should be anything at all that he or she could do now to revoke that occurrence, certainly it would be done. But it is too late. In the same sense, we should not allow deterioration of any part of our body now, only to be aggrieved later when it is too late. So start by truly loving yourself today.

Apology and Explanation: When or why is a written apology or explanation done?

Here is the answer.

1. On any occasion or the other you might have done something that turned out to be quite wrong, unfair, careless, or even hurtful to another person.

2. Perhaps you thought of writing

a letter or note but found it difficult to put your honourable intention down on paper.

Clear your mind of this burden. Put all unwilling thoughts and actions behind you; bring out that strong hidden character which reflects good personality and face up to the situation.

3. The earlier you apologise or explain, the earnest and gracious your letter or note will be.

4. It is always better to let someone know that you are aware of what difficulty you caused than not to say anything about the matter Here are some guidelines for writing the note of apology or explanation: 1. Be prompt in sending the note of apology or explanation if you know that your action(s) deserve one.

2. Believe that what you have said was the best thing under the prevailing circumstance.

3. Offer payment of some kind or replacement if you have damaged anything.

4. Do not make excuses especially that could irritate.

5. Make your letter brief.

An Acceptable Letter of Apology or Explanation 2674 Parkinson Lane Bushy Park Greater Printstown August 23, 2020 Dear Mrs. Sandy, Yesterday afternoon I promptly turned my back on you when you asked me not to pick your ripe ginips that were hanging over into my mother’s yard. Please accept my apology for my rudeness. I could not see then to whom the ginips belonged. You were right to speak to me when and how you did for whether the ginips were hanging in your yard or over into ours, they were still yours. There is no excuse for my behaviour, Mrs. Sandy, and I am truly sorry. After all, we are long standing neighbours and you are a kind and courteous person always.

2. Write a letter to a friend who means much to you. Explain why you are unable to reach her at the new supermarket just two corners away from where you live in your area next weekend.

THE LETTER OF EXCUSE Most institutions require that students bring along written excuses for absences, sometimes before or after the period of absence. This happens at organisations also, such as clubs and ministries.

Try the following suggestions in writing the letter or note of excuse to make it quite befitting its purpose.

1. Be courteous. 3. Give a reason for the absence.

2. Be exact in stating the time of absence. 4. Be brief.

An Acceptable Letter of Excuse Your home has not been doing so well in the rainy season, so some improvement must be done right away. Your mother needs to write a letter of excuse.

You overlook her style and presentation. The following note is what she eventually sends to your teacher on your behalf.

Ingredients ► 16 oz smoked herring •► ½ green pepper, sliced thinly ► ½ red pepper, sliced thinly ► 1 medium onion, sliced thinly ► 3 cloves garlic, crushed ► 2 tsp oil ► ¼ tsp black pepper ► 1 hot pepper, seed removed ► Juice of ½ lime

Method ■ Boil herring in a pot with water for 10 minutes.

■ Drain and allow to cool before flaking the fish and removing as may bones as possible.

■ In a frying pan add oil; when the oil is hot sautee red and green peppers, onion and garlic for a few minutes, until the peppers soften.

■ Add fish, black pepper, hot pepper and lime juice to the pot and sautee for an additional 5 minutes.

■ Remove from heat and serve warm.
