Task Force cracks down on COVID-19 breachers –– worshippers, bars and popular promoter ‘feel the heat’

THE National COVID-19 Task Force (NCTF) continued to crackdown on persons who breached the gazetted COVID-19 guidelines, which are meant to keep all people safe during the pandemic, by charging worshippers and a popular promoter, and suspending three businesses.

According to the police, popular Linden promoter, Aubrey “Shang-

hai” Major was charged with a breach of “restriction on social activities”, after he allegedly hosted a party at his Central Amelia’s Ward residence on Sunday last.

cording to police reports, the case will be called again on May 13.

Also, according to reliable information provided to the Guyana Chronicle, five persons were arrested and charged after they were found breaching the COVID-19 measures at an East Bank Demerara (EBD) masjid.

It is understood that the persons in question not only refused to wear a mask, but were also in breach of the special guidelines instituted for the Holy Month of Ramadan. What is even more interesting is that one of the individuals is a medical doctor who resides and practises his trade on the EBD. He was placed on recognisance bail, and is due to appear in court next month.

Ahead of the beginning of Ramadan, an advisory from the NCTF Secretariat stated that mosques can be opened for the five daily prayers, but prayers and religious programmes are only allowed at 40 per cent capacity of the mosques. The masjids have been encouraged to utilise their outdoor spaces where available, so that

Furthermore, it was emphasised that the masjids must have sanitisers and face masks available for use by all persons attending worship. The advisory also stipulates that persons entering the masjid must wear masks, wash or sanitise at the

entrance, and stay at least four feet apart during prayer.

As an additional precaution, it was suggested that persons who attend the masjid should walk with their own prayer mats.

On Thursday, after this newspaper learnt of the arrests, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) issued a press statement emphasising that it “stands strongly and fully endorses” the NCTF guidelines and protocols that were instituted for Ramadan, and encouraged everyone to adhere to them.

This newspaper also received reports that the operations of three additional businesses were suspended for one month, after a patrol exercise by the Task Force last weekend found them in breach of the measures.

Restaurant, Bar and Catering in Georgetown; Cigars and Cognac Eco Bar and Lounge at Melanie Damishana, on the East Coast Demerara (ECD); and Chicken King Grill and Bar, which is also located at ‘Melanie’.

On Wednesday, during a press conference held at State House, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said that the enforcement measures will be upped to ensure that the COVID-19 guidelines are adhered to, and that the local authorities will consider charging the owners and managers of errant businesses if the breaches continue.

He also noted that seeing that the fines for breaching such offences are inadequate, he has tasked the Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall, S.C. with reviewing the local laws with a view to amending them.

Police ‘Band Mistress’ laid to rest

IT was a moving and touching ceremony on Thursday, as many persons paid tribute, in song and in words, to the late Director of Music and Culture, Senior Superintendent Charmaine Stuart, during a ceremony held at the Eve Leary Sports Club.

Starting at 11:30 hours, persons were able to view the body, and pay tribute to Stuart, who was revered as an honourable woman.

Following an outpouring of tributes, the body of the policewoman was taken to Berbice for burial.

Celebrated as the first female Guyana Police Force (GPF) Band Leader, in the band’s 182-year history, Stuart died suddenly on April 21, after she was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) complaining of chest pains. She was 55 years old.

Stuart became the GPF’s first band mistress in 2016, after over 30 years of dedicated service to the force.

In 2017, the year after being appointed to the helm of the police band, Stuart was named the best overall cop at the force’s annual awards ceremony. At that time, she was wearing several hats aside from the Director of Culture and Music.

By 17:00 hours, the building was filled with smoke, and persons who were still there were forced to hurriedly evacuate the building.

A call was placed to the Guyana Fire Service at 17:00 hours, and several fire tenders were dispatched to the scene.

By Jared Liddell TENANTS, including businessowners and lawyers, watched in dismay on Thursday as smoke continued to billow from what once was a facility that housed their livelihood, the Sharon’s Mall.

On Wednesday, fire blazed from the Mall, destroying everything in its path and leaving a scene unfitting for the weak-hearted.

With millions in losses and nowhere to turn to immediately, businessowners could only watch and, in some cases, cry.

Owner of “Coffee House”, Shenelly King, was in complete shock as she visited the site and saw that the building was completely ravaged.

She said that her business, which she has been running for just under a year, was the only source of income for not just her, but her two employees as well.

In recalling the moment she learnt of the fire, King said: “I wasn’t here when the fire broke out; I had already left, because I’m normally the first person to be here, out of all the tenants. And that is around 06:15 – 06:30 hours, because I make breakfast. So, I normally leave early. I left and I went home, and at about ‘four something’, I got a call from one of the other tenants telling me that the building is on fire.”

She related that since she was not at the building when the fire broke out, she was unable to save any of her equipment, which she estimates to cost just over $1 million.

Natasha Rafferty, owner of Step-In-Style Boutique, said that she, like many of the other tenants, had already made her way home, when she was alerted about the fire.

The businesswoman estimates her losses to be around $4 million. And, for her, this is no ordinary loss, as the capital for her business was gotten from her and her daughter’s

ALREADY HOME “We were already home when we got the news that there was a little smoke coming out, but by the time we reach back, because we were all the way on the East Coast, it wasn’t that bad.

But we stood and we heard the explosion; and the entire building catch fire… We got some stuff out, but them things ain’t good; smoke and everything fall on them, so we couldn’t save any of them for future use,” a distraught Rafferty said.

She said that one of the major items she sold at the business were high-fashion ‘prom’ dresses, which she estimates to cost around $100,000 or more per piece.

She noted that the business was the only source of income for her and her daughter, and that the fire has not just caused them to lose their investment, but also placed them in the unemployment line.

The four-storey building, located at King and Charlotte Streets, in downtown Georgetown, was gutted by a fire suspected to be electrical in origin, and has left in its wake millions of dollars in damage. Smoke was first spotted around 17:00 hours, but the firemen who responded were unable to access the building for about two hours.

Flames were spotted around 19:00 hours.

THICK SMOKE Up until 19:00 hours, thick dark smoke was seen emanating from the building.

Then suddenly, the glass of several windows shattered and flames were spotted.

Within minutes, the third and fourth floors were engulfed in flames.

Fire Chief Kalamadeen Edoo explained that due to the fire travelling through the ceiling of the building, it was extremely dangerous for the ranks of the fire service to go charging into the building before ascertaining what sections of the facility were affected.

He noted that had the firemen gone into the building without ascertaining where the fire was, it could have put their lives at risk.

He also acknowledged that there was a significant level of smoke emanating from the building, which would have not just impaired the vision of the ranks, but also affected their ability to breathe during the operation.

“Because of the thick level of smoke, that’s the reason

the firefighters could not get into the building. While we have a job to do, safety is also a priority; the firefighters’ lives are still important.

So, whenever we advance, we advance with precaution, to prevent any further danger to themselves and their other colleagues,” Edoo said.

The fire chief, who also charged into the building to help control the fire, stated that although the ranks are all experienced, the scene of the fire on Wednesday was extremely difficult to manoeuvre. However, their training kicked in, and the ranks managed to take action.

“All you think about is bringing the fire under control, and saving someone’s life, even though it is a danger you risk yourselves to save someone’s life or

save a building from going up in flames,” the Fire Chief said.

RUMOURS The Fire Chief dispelled the rumour that the fire tenders arrived at the site of the fire with no water.

He explained that the fire tenders that go to any fire site all have water, but it is important that the fire service locates a source of running water, so that it would be able to properly control the blaze.

“If they said the fire trucks have limited water, I would accept that one but at no time the fire service goes to any fire scene without water, and that would never happen,” he said.

The fire chief added: “If you as an officer on the

ground or the supervisor and you’re going with 400 gallons of water in the fire tank, and you see that the entire building is engulfed in flames, immediately you have to make an assessment while you’re proceeding to the scene.

“From that assessment you would already know that the 400 gallons of water that you’re going with can’t fight that fire, immediately you have to think about a plan B which is an open source or a fire hydrant, where you can get a continuous source of water until the fire is extinguished.”

Meanwhile, he noted that the fire service is still in the process of completing its investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Police issue another bulletin for Kuru Kururu man THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued yet another wanted bulletin for Delon Wilson of Kuru Kururu, Linden Highway, who has been wanted since June, 2020, for questioning in relation to larceny.

It was reported, in sections of the media, that Wilson, along with two others, terrorised and robbed 44-year-old Joann Wilson at Kuru Kururu, on June 13.

According to reports, on the day in question, around 13:00 hours, the men invaded the woman’s property and held her at gunpoint while she was in her bedroom. She was reportedly dragged from the bedroom as

the men made their demands.

As she was kept hostage by one of the bandits, the others collected a 49-inch TCL television, an HP laptop, a Nintendo PS4, and a yellow metal ring.

Not satisfied, they also relieved the woman of a sum of cash.

The Police stated that the men then made good their escape in a Nissan Tida motor car that belonged to one of the occupants of the home. The vehicle was later recovered by Police at Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Vacuous rhetoric IT is quite natural or normal for members of an opposition party to have and express critical views about the policies and projects of the incumbent government but it is quite strange when they extend their rancour to others when they do not get their way.

In the case of the A Partnership For National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) such adversarial, bulling and unproductive posture, could hardly be described as strange.

Recent statements from the APNU+AFC senior leader, Joseph Harmon, who is also Leader of the Opposition, immediately comes to mind.

From the period of March 2020 stretching to August of that year, Guyanese at home, in the diaspora and people around the world, witnessed the most brazen attempts in the 21st century by elements at the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) to rig the national elections.

During this dark period, the actors in GECOM, who many have called out as agents of the APNU+AFC, went to great lengths to make all sorts of fraudulent declarations to hand the then APNU+AFC Gov-

ernment, victory at the March 2, 2020 polls.

They failed in their evil attempts because of a series of embarrassing losses at the courts and mounting international pressure to desist from squatting in office.

It is prudent when a party looses an election, it reflects on its action in office, re-strategise and work to win back the confidence of the majority of the electorate. But not the APNU+AFC under Harmon, who was installed by former President, David Granger, as Opposition Leader.

Notwithstanding the disgraceful attempts to seize power through fictitious statements of poll, the APNU+AFC bizarrely filed two elections petitions in which they made the laughable claim that they were wrongfully removed from office.

It was therefore hardly any surprise to any rational mind when the unmeritorious and preposterous arguments by Coalition attorneys were dismissed by the Honourable Chief Justice, Roxanne George, who threw out both of the petitions, the last one being Petition 88 of 2020, on Monday.

From the onset, the petitions seem to be driven by imagination rather than sound legal arguments and one would have at least

or reasonably expect that the Opposition Leader, though pained by the losses notwithstanding his contrived arguments, show respect for the judgement of the court.

It was crude, callous and utterly disrespectful when instead of graciously accepting the judgement in the last case, he proceeded to lambaste the court in a fit of infantile tantrum -- a habitual behaviour of his that is devoid of any modicum of statesmanship or befitting of any leader worthy of becoming President.

Attorney-General, Anil Nandall could not be more right when he pointed out that judges, in their administration of justice, must be able to deliver rulings fearlessly, without the apprehension of their reputation being tarnished by parties to litigation, especially those who are not satisfied with the rulings.

“Our system is adversarial and therefore one litigant will lose and one will win. The loser has a right to appeal, which he must resort to if he wishes; he has no right to scandalise the judge or ascribe a sinister motive to the Judiciary,” the Attorney-General warned, adding that: “I am appalled by the barrage of verbal attacks recorded in the

media against the Judiciary and in particular the Honourable Chief Justice as a result of a recent decision rendered. This type of scurrilous attack on the Judiciary strikes at the heart of the administration of justice and must be condemned in the strongest possible fashion.”

The attack by Harmon on the Judiciary and Chief Justice is reminiscent of his attacks on regional leaders and reputable international organisations which condemned the attempts by elements at GECOM to rig the March 2, 2020 elections in favour of then APNU+AFC regime.

But his statement on Monday did not stop there. Harmon went on again to describe the sitting, democratically-elected People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government, who he wants to have dialogue with, and according to him, in the “interest of the nation”, as “installed” and “where they have no right being”.

This kind of symphony from Harmon hardly resonates with commonsense and he should not be dismayed at the negative coverage of his public outpourings by the reputable media houses in Guyana.

Eshri Singh will be greatly missed by the NY Guyanese diaspora Dear Editor, THE New York-based Guyanese Diaspora is poorer for the passing of legendary broadcaster, Eshri Singh. He had made his home in Greater Richmond Hill, Queens.

Eshri has had a passion for broadcasting since a youngster, joining Radio Demerara in the 1960s. He was a true master of his craft; he had the gift of the gab; few had such a pleasant voice that magnetically attracts one’s ears. His voice was distinctive and recognisable. His description of the talent of performers was also spontaneous and entertaining. Besides having a commanding voice, he also had a charming personality and suave looks. He became one of the most sought-after hosts in America. He was versatile and adaptable to any programme, be it formal or casual. He emceed at both types of events. He engaged with audiences of all levels, making him a very much sought-after emcee.

He communicated energy and excitement in his voice, which resonates with the type of atmosphere of the show. Eshri kept the audience’s interests in programmes very high, while ensuring the smooth flow of cultural events or radio and TV programmes. Some of his notable emceeing ‘gigs’ include various Independence and Republic Day programmes, festivals, commemorative events, and receptions of visiting Presidents of Guyana and Prime Ministers of Trinidad & Tobago in NY. I grew up in Guyana listening to his radio programmes during the 1960s and 1970s. He

was enormously popular; there was hardly anyone who listened to Indian music and didn’t know his name. Eshri had extraordinary talent, and developed a remarkable broadcasting career, emceeing countless Indian concerts, and radio and TV programmes in Guyana and America.

Indians in Trinidad, the UK, and Canada also knew him from their Guyana days; he appeared on several Indian cultural programmes in Toronto and Trinidad, including the popular Mastana Bahar singing and dancing contests.

He spoke very fondly of the Mohammed clan of Mohammedville in El Socoro, Trinidad, who were promoters of Indian culture, on radio and TV since the 1960s in Trinidad.

He contributed significantly to the institutionalisation of Indo-Caribbean culture and community life among Indo-Guyanese living in New York. He had a presence at countless cultural, religious, and community political events in the greater NY area. He was seen at events where Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan Bharrat Jagdeo, and Donald Ramotar were the main speakers. I do not think anyone emceed more events than he. I faintly recall his presence as a judge at a Miss Diwali pageant I organised and emceed in the 1980s. He emceed charitable programmes, and was present at the annual Diwali and Phagwah parades in Richmond Hill.

Tens of thousands grew up listening on radio to his very distinct voice on programmes that provided a staple of Bollywood music and songs with birthday requests. No one else had that magnificent, superfluous voice as he did

during that period.

The Forbes Burnham era saw Eshri and so many of us escaping Guyana, never to return to live. His departure from Guyana was a blessing for Guyanese in NY, as he became a promoter of Indian culture in America.

I first met Eshri in New York sometime in the late 1980s through Ramesh Kalicharran, who used his business earnings to fund radio and musical programmes and concerts. I had countless encounters with him thereafter at various events, including cultural programmes that I emceed or organized, including the annual Indian Arrival cultural variety concerts in Richmond Hill. At first, Eshri appeared on radio programmes hosted by other broadcasters, before getting his own programmes on radio and on TV. He was a weekly feature (Saturdays and Sundays) on TV for several hours. There is no question he was the leading emcee and TV broadcaster in the Guyanese Diaspora.

My experiences with Eshri were very warm and friendly. He was very humble. His humility and his voice were his real power. His personal values included respect for others, kindness, compassion, collaboration with other broadcasters and gratitude to those who assisted him, especially during his early years in America.

He always had very kind words to describe Mr. Kali, who sponsored Eshri’s trip to India. When Eshri accompanied Kali’s group on a tour to India more than a decade ago, I communicated with him daily for a report on the tour, and used

it to pen several articles. He described that India visit as most inspirational, incredibly beautiful, fantastic, and unforgettable. He shared wonderful pictures.

In NY, Eshri condemned the Burnham Government for marginalising Indian culture, and discriminating against Indians in employment practices. He was not very active in the movement in NY against the dictatorship. But he lent his moral support and his voice to those of us who led the struggle in the diaspora.

Many who know Eshri Singh pay generous tribute. Ralph Tamesh, President of the Indo-Caribbean Federation, thanks him for hosting several community events. “He was an icon. His voice was unique, and he is irreplaceable as an emcee,” Ralph said. Guyana Democracy Project President, Dr. Tara Singh stated: “He was an inspiration for several generations. He had a golden voice, and the kind of poise, grace, and tenacity needed in broadcasting and emceeing programmes.” Ashook Ramsaran, President of the Indian Diaspora Council, said Eshri was “a broadcasting pioneer, providing a reassuring voice and connection at a time when it was so critically needed as the community was being established”.

It seems trite to say that Eshri’s voice will be missed, but it’s true. He was a great broadcaster whose skill and trained voice should be emulated.

COVID-19 death toll reaches 295 –– 143 new cases recorded within 24 hours

TWO COVID-19 deaths recorded by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday have pushed the death toll to 295, a figure which is reflected in the April 29 edition of the COVID dashboard.

The latest fatalities are two females, a 63-year-old and a 59-year-old from Region Three (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara). They both died on Thursday while receiving medical care at a government facility.

There are now 62 documented COVID-19 deaths for the month of April. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has recorded 143 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,240 tests conducted on Wednesday, April 28.

Of this total, Region One (Barima-Waini) recorded three; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), one; Region Three, 22; Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), 80; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), five; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), seven; Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), 21, and Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice), one.

The newly infected persons were 17 males and 36

females. There are currently 16 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 88 in institutional isolation, 1,597 isolated at home, and eight in institutional quarantine.

Guyana has confirmed a total of 13,106 cases of COVID-19 since its arrival in Guyana. Of that number, 1,709 are currently active; and of the 11,110 recoveries, 40 were recorded within the past 24 hours.

All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining six feet physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Letter of intent signed to market Guyana’s carbon credit –– potential arrangement could earn nation millions of USD

THE Government of Guyana has signed a letter of intent with U.S.-based non-profit organisation (NGO), Emergent Finance Accelerated Inc. to market Guyana’s carbon credit, globally.

A carbon credit is a tradable permit or certificate that allows the holder of the credit the right to emit a tonne of carbon dioxide or an equivalent of another greenhouse gas.

Guyana is considered a carbon sink, which is any reservoir, natural or otherwise, that absorbs more carbon than it releases, and thereby lowers the concentration of (Carbon dioxide) CO 2 from the atmosphere.

Should the agreement with the NGO be operationalised, Guyana stands a chance of earning hundreds of millions of United States Dollars annually, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has said.

The Head of State, during a press conference on Wednesday, explained that the NGO will be looking for markets for Guyana’s carbon credit.

He said there is a base price of US$10 per unit and even if the company is able to secure a higher price for the unit, all the revenue will come to the country, excluding the operational costs.

“We have just entered into this letter of intent with the company so they are now going to go and look for the market. That is

ongoing,” President Ali said.

Already, Guyana has received funds from Norway for the preservation of its forests and limiting of carbon emissions.

In signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Guyana on November 9, 2009, the Government of Norway had committed to providing financial support of up to U.S.$250 million for results achieved by Guyana in limiting emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

As part of the agreement, the two countries had agreed to establish the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund (GRIF) as the financial intermediary mechanism for the performance-based payments from contributors to Guyana.

The GRIF represented an effort to create an innovative climate finance mechanism which balances national sovereignty over investment priorities, while ensuring that REDD+ funds adhere to the partner entities’ financial, environmental and social safeguards.

Although the initial agreement has ended, the government is engaging Norway on the possibility of a new arrangement. ‘’Discussions on a new agreement are well underway, but we have not gone out of the discussion stages yet, but they are fairly advanced,” President Ali said.

There are, however, remaining resources from the last agreement, which are being programmed now into the renewable energy sector.

“Guyana is a carbon sink and we have to leverage assets to bring money into this country to support economic development,” Vice-President, Bharrat Jagdeo had said in September, last year.

The Vice-President had said that this is what the past People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) administration sought to do through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).

In June 2009, the then Government of Guyana launched its LCDS, which aimed to transform Guyana’s economy on to a low-carbon, sustainable development trajectory, while simultaneously combating climate change.

The LCDS was geared at protecting and maintaining the forests in an effort to reduce global carbon emissions and at the same time attract payments from developed countries for the climate services that the forests provide to the world.

This strategy was, however, cast aside by the former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) administration, which released its “Green State Development Strategy (GSDS).”

“The green state strategy was a sham… they farmed it out to the international consultants, so it was not grounded in the Guyanese reality and could not solve our problems,” Vice-President Jagdeo was reported as saying.

Considering the issues related to the GSDS, Vice-President reiterated the relevance of the LCDS, noting: “This strategy will be expanded to cover the sale of biodiversity services; biodiversity management; and management of water resources… those are important parts of where we want to expand the LCDS into new frontiers.”

Jagdeo promised that actual work will be done under the LCDS, unlike what obtained with the GSDS. No project was implemented under the GSDS other than the planting of trees, said the Vice-President.

President Ali, on Wednesday, said discussions on the LCDS were recently reinforced at a Commonwealth Heads of Government Americas roundtable discussion, which was hosted by His Royal Highness Prince Charles.

The roundtable discussed how to advance green recovery post COVID, and initiatives to be taken for consideration at the 26th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) later this year.

CSEC not a requirement for online scholarship initiative

FOR years, the lack of impressive results at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination, has hindered the academic advancement of many Guyanese, but, the government’s 20,000 online scholarships initiative has, somewhat, broken down this barrier by eliminating CSEC as a requirement for acceptance into the programmes being offered.

In essence, not having CSEC passes will not prevent a person from acquiring a wholesome education at an internationally-recognised university.

This was said by Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag, during her remarks at one of several outreaches in Region One (Barima-Waini), on Wednesday.

Parag said that the government is fully cognisant of the fact that success at CSEC requires much more than intellect, and that oftentimes, a lack of resources and, in some cases, unfortunate circumstances, prevent persons from doing well at those examinations.

To fill this gap, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) will be offering preparatory courses which seek to ensure that persons meet the requirements for more advanced courses they wish to pursue.

“That is a six-month programme and it carries two courses, and if you’re successful with those courses you can now go on to apply for a diploma or degree…without your CXC (Caribbean Examination Council) [subjects],” Minister Parag said.

She said that the GOAL initiative was not crafted in a vacuum, and that it addresses the concerns of grassroots Guyanese, having relied on the outcome of a series of comprehensive community consultations held across the country, during the five years that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) was out of office.

“His Excellency (Dr. Irfaan Ali) would have been on the ground speaking to persons in different communities and realised that there was really a gap in the education system; it was not being reached equally across the country to our people,” Minister Parag explained.

She said that President Ali’s intention was to roll out a local education programme that is unmatched.

“Education and the striving for higher education is something that has always been a priority of the government, and this would’ve started since 1992 when Dr. Cheddi Jagan would have entered into office,” Parag said.

Those efforts, she noted, continued with the Jagans’ successor, former President and now Vice- President, Dr. Bharat Jagdeo, who developed a number of bilateral relationships with countries that offer higher education.

“…and here we are today, in 2021, rolling out His Excellency’s initiative of giving you, not only a higher education, but an education in a modern time,” Minister Parag told the Region One residents.

She noted that even in the absence of the coronavirus, the scholarships programme would still have adopted an online approach, in keeping with global technological advancements, and the needs of learners who are employed and require flexible learning schedules.

IN recognising the glaring telecommunication needs of various communities throughout Guyana, Parag said that efforts are afoot to assess and remedy the situation.

She maintained, however, that the online courses do not require constant internet access, and that persons without steady Wi-Fi or data could still take advantage of the thousands of scholarships being offered.

Minister Parag also reminded persons that not only are the scholarships being fully financed by the Government of Guyana, but it also comes with no strings attached.

“Take this opportunity; do not let it pass you by,” the Public Service Minister stressed.

BRIDGING THE GAP Also accompanying Minister Parag was Housing Minister, Collin Croal, who emphasised the fact that the GOAL initiative was one that was being executed in a manner which sought to bridge the gap and level the playing field between services offered on the coastland, and what is available in the far-flung regions.

He further commended Minister Parag for ensuring that the programme was being promoted equally, throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Director of the GOAL, Professor Jacob Opadeyi, told the Region One residents that the GOAL platform offers in excess of 85 programmes, and that it gives applicants the opportunity to choose and prioritise three options.

His advice to applicants was: “Look for something that you are qualified for, or something that you really want to do.”

Opadeyi, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, also assured the prospective applicants that they still have time to prepare and get their affairs in order, since the scholarships will be available over the next five years.

“If you don’t get through this year, you can apply next year,” Professor Opadeyi posited.

The GOAL initiative is being executed jointly between the Ministries of Public Service and Education.

‘Branch Road’ residents taking no chances with COVID-19 –– as preliminary data show 90 per cent of residents vaccinated against the disease

By Rehana Ahamad A SIGNIFICANT number of persons living in villages along Branch Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD), have already been vaccinated against COVID-19.

This is according to Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Inderjeet Persaud, who estimated that the vaccination figures to be approximately 90 per cent of the residents.

On Wednesday, the farming communities along Branch Road benefitted from a fourth vaccination exercise hosted at the Mortice Primary School. It attracted close to 40 persons who received their first jab of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia.

“The residents have responded positively to the vaccination; it has been good so far,” Persaud said during an interview with the

The mother of four said that she was quite eager to become vaccinated, knowing full well that it would protect her and her family from the deadly coronavirus.

Mahadeo was accompanied by Kavi Doobay, who also took the vaccine. She wasted no time in hailing the process.

The radio personality explained this reception from persons did not come without challenges, since many of the villagers were skeptical about the myths and negative information being peddled about the COVID-19 vaccines.

“People were concerned about the side effects. We were able to convince them not to listen to people saying negative things and trust in the science,” Persaud related.

He attributed the notable growth in the vaccination numbers to the efforts of the CDC members.

“We went house-to-house in Mahaicony, Branch Road, ensuring that people understand the seriousness of COVID-19, the precautions they should take, and the importance of the vaccination,” Persaud said.

He said that almost every elderly resident along the Branch Road corridor has been vaccinated; from Perth Village all the way to Moraikobai in the Mahaicony Creek.

“There are likely around 70 people who have also taken their second dose; those are

U.S. Ambassador meets fishermen, private sector on Corentyne UNITED States Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah Ann-Lynch, on Wednesday, visited the Upper Corentyne area where she met with fisher folks, members of the Region Six private sector and the Mayor of Corriverton.

The purpose of the meetings was to meet with members of the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and residents face to face to hear about the issues affecting them.

Ambassador Lynch, while noting that some engagements can and will continue to be done virtually, said it was important to be on the ground to hear and witness first-hand the issues affecting persons.

“What I wanted to achieve is to touch base again with the chamber’s president, some of the members [to] hear from them first-hand some of these issues on the ground, and with the fisher folk it’s hard to do those meetings virtually; to see them in action where they actually work on the boats, I saw them unfolding their nets, I saw the boat

Meanwhile, President of the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Hemchand Jaichand, added that the Guyanese fishermen are at the mercy of their Surinamese counterparts who facilitate the licensing agreement.

The US$300 (approximately $60, 000) that Guyanese fishermen paid to operate in Surname has been increased, he told reporters. The licence agreement stipulates that the catch must go to Suriname where it is sold at cheap prices. The unwanted fish is what is returned to Guyana to be sold.

Meetings were held with the Upper Corentyne Fishermen Co-op society, Mayor of Corriverton, Winston Roberts, and the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.

The ambassador said COVID-19 management, infrastructure work and improving job opportunities were among the issues discussed with the Corriverton Mayor.

During the meeting with the Upper Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, security, governance and prosperity were the key issues discussed.

The U.S. Ambassador noted that, although she met with these officials, the main focus of her visit was meeting with the fisher folks who had expressed concerns about illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and the issuance of licences to operate.

“The issue of Illegal, unrecorded and unregulated fishing is an important one. We have a new administration in the United States right now. President Biden as you may have seen is very concerned about climate change. He held a large climate summit last week and so the issue of Illegal fishing really impacts not only the environment but it impacts global economies as well,” she added.

“The documentation on the Guyanese end has been complete and is awaiting the approval of the Surinamese,” Jaichand stated, adding that the matter was raised with the U.S. Ambassador because the current licences for the Guyanese fisher folks will soon expire.

Among the other issues raised were the ban on catfish export to the US which the ambassador stated is being addressed.

“We are well aware that is a product that the diaspora really enjoys but there are certain rules and regulations for the export market of catfish so we had technical meetings with the folks here responsible for making sure all the appropriate safety measures are in place, and what not to export, so they are working on going through that list and as soon as that is complete, hopefully, there will be some good news sometime in the future,” she said.

Work begins on $2.3B Eccles-Mandela highway WORK has started on the $2.3 billion concrete, four-lane highway from Mandela Avenue, Georgetown to Eccles, East Bank of Demerara (EBD), which is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion.

The infrastructural project, which is slated for completion by December 2021, is divided into six lots: Lot one – Eccles, EBD; Lot two- Agricola; Lot three – Rome; Lot four – Houston South; Lot five – Houston North; and Lot six – South Ruimveldt.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal has said that land-clearing works at South Ruimveldt were completed, and the contractor was currently surveying and preparing the land for the “hardcore” work, which was expected to begin in one week.

The commencement of work was in keeping with the timeline established by the Ministry of Housing and Water, following the signing of six contracts on April 1, 2021, for the construction of the highway.

Since there was no previous infrastructural work on the proposed site, the area had to first be cleared to allow for construc-

tion of the highway.

This Eccles to Mandela Avenue Highway comprises a four-lane road project with a dual carriageway of two lanes each.

Importantly, this proposed roadway is a jointed reinforced concrete pavement.

The six contractors who were awarded these contracts through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board were drawn from Guyana, Trinidad and Brazil, after 27 bidders had expressed an interest and subsequently submitted bids for this project. The procurement process commenced on January 30, 2021, and the bids were closed on February 25, 2021.

Meanwhile, Minister Croal underscored that the construction of the highway shows growth within the ministry, since it is a new area under its work programme.

“This is also part of what we’re doing… in creating networks and in developing housing schemes. You must have the access and that is the main access, hence we are at this part,” he said.

He further stated that persons travelling from other parts of the EBD and from

Given that this project can become the benchmark for future construction, the CEO implored the contractors to work assiduously to complete the project within the eight-month timeframe.

Schools to remain closed in May

DESPITE the encouraging vaccination drive to alleviate the effects of COVID-19, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced that public schools will remain physically closed for the month of May. This is with the exception of those schools with Grades 10, 11 and 12, where students have been in attendance since November last. Students who remain at home will continue to be taught virtually.

This was announced on Thursday by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, in a video message post on the various social media pages of the Ministry of Education.

“We have been advised at this point that given the numbers of both COVID infections as well as the rate of the vaccination process that we will stay closed [for the month of May] except for the classrooms that have al-

ready been reopened and have already returned to schools. At the end of May I’m going to let you know what we are going to do in June,” the minister said.

Schools in Guyana have been physically closed since March, 2020.

According to Manickchand, the decision for schools to remain closed came following a meeting of Cabinet on Thursday, where Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, would’ve spoken on the risk factors, and Guyana’s growing COVID-19 situation.

April 2021 has been one of the deadliest months on record, since Guyana recorded its first case of COVID-19 in March, 2020.

As at Wednesday, some 60 deaths have been recorded for April alone, with a total of 293 deaths.

To counter the rising spread of the virus, the government has been actively promoting vaccina-

tion against the virus, with over 128,000 persons being vaccinated so far.

During her video message, Manickchand took the opportunity to implore teachers and parents to go out and get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“I encourage persons particularly teachers and parents to go out and take the vaccine,” Manickchand appealed.

In Guyana, the COVID-19 vaccine is being administered free and is available to everyone 18 years and over. However, inoculation is voluntary.

The government is hopeful of having enough persons vaccinated soon in order to achieve “herd immunity”.

“While we are very pleased that some persons have come out to be vaccinated and that the programme has been smooth in terms of its administration, we are concerned about the sloth of some communities and regions,

as well as some interest groups,” Manickchand related.

Manickchand herself has already been vaccinated, and notes that it is one means of fast-tracking the reopening of schools in Guyana, and returning ‘normalcy’ to the world.

“If you have an interest in making sure our schools

open then you have to have an interest in making sure that as many people as you can take the vaccine, because that’s the only way we’re going to change the picture of COVID. If you want to see the students back in school then you have to take the vaccine as parents,” Manickchand posited.

Guyana introduces UN resolution on support for St. Vincent PERMANENT Representative of Guyana to the United Nations (UN) and Chair of the CARICOM Caucus, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, on behalf of the community, has introduced a resolution to the UN, entitled: “Solidarity with and support for the Government and people of St Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as neighbouring countries affected by the impact of the eruptions of the La Soufriere Volcano.”

The resolution received overwhelming support in the General Assembly, with 174 Member States co-sponsoring. In the end, the resolution was adopted by consensus.

In her statement to the General Assembly, Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett told the General Assembly: “The resolution expresses deep concern about the serious consequences of the explosive eruptions of the La Soufrière Volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines since April 9, 2021, which has resulted in the displacement of residents, loss of livelihoods, food security and nutrition, health security, and access to social infrastructure, and about the urgent need to restore normal conditions for the population.”

For more than two weeks, St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been in the throes of a series of explosive volcanic eruptions on the island of St. Vincent, a crisis of historic proportions.

Nearly one-fifth of the island’s population was evacuated from the immediate disaster area, which covers approximately onethird of the island.

The ongoing explosive volcanic eruptions are compounded by the multi-dimensional challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and comes before a predicted active hurricane season that begins in a few weeks.

These are all severe shocks beyond domestic control and demonstrate the vulnerability of Small Island Developing States.

The resolution, presented to the Assembly, notes the elevated public health risk of the spread of

COVID-19 among persons offered refuge both within and beyond the national territory of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

It further underlines the special needs and challenges of the island and the affected neighbouring countries, and welcomes the generous and immediate assistance that has been provided by CARICOM and other neighbouring countries, as well as by other States and national, regional and international organisations, particularly the UN system.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett further told the Assembly: “The resolution invites the international community to continue relief efforts and to increase support, and encourages the international financial institutions and organisations to continue to contribute and to respond generously for the duration of the emergency and of the rehabilitation process in St Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as affected neighbouring countries. It also requests the Secretary-General, to the extent of this authority, to support the rehabilitation efforts.”

Permanent Representative of St Vincent and the Grenadines to the United Nations, Ambassador Rhonda King, expressed sincere gratitude, on behalf of her country, to all Member States for their invaluable support for the resolution.

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett for introducing the resolution on behalf of CARICOM and for her personal outreach efforts, as well as to Ambassador Keisha McGuire of Grenada, for her efforts. Special appreciation was expressed to the entire Latin America and Caribbean region for their familial solidarity and to all of the Americas, who she said, has “rallied to our cause.”

Ambassador King welcomed the launch of the UN Global Appeal Fund for St. Vincent and the Grenadines and neighbouring countries, stating: “Without the immediate and sustained solidarity from the United Nations, our regional/sub-regional organisations, neighbours and countries near and far, our life and living would be

completely unbearable. We thank you!”

The UN and its agencies have been actively at work.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Regional Security System (RSS), the ALBA, the Association of Caribbean States, and their allied regional agencies have been at the forefront, with their ‘magnificent’ efforts.

Ambassador King further said: “It is important to note that, within 24 hours of the first set of explosive eruptions, my Prime Minister [Ralph Gonsalves] re-

details, the “No More COVID” singer would only say that the video is being released sometime next month and that the partnership involves someone very popular in Guyana.

Speaking with the Buzz this week, he said the video called ‘Lavish Lifestyle’ features the kind of ‘high life’ that wealthy people enjoy. “I have a good feeling this music video will be a hit,” Wiz Phil expressed.

He believes strongly that his music will eventually make it big, not just locally, but internationally. “I know my music’s worth; it’s worth much more than these ears in Guyana. It just takes one song to make a hit and I know that it will come soon,” he said.

Geer loved music ever since he was a child and this was fueled by the time he spent playing instruments in church, but it was really in his high school days that the thought came to him that music is what he really wants to pursue.

“I grew up in church playing the drums and then I moved on to guitars and so forth. I started developing an ear for music and I got better at it and I just continued and realised that I am really cut out for the music business,” he said.

He started recording music in high school just for his benefit and that of his friends, but after finishing school, he began taking it seriously. “I started recording my own music by getting the right equipment and software, microphones and a better mix and sound. My friends told me I sounded good and it made me think I should continue.”

Geer is especially proud of the fact that he has his own recording studio, has managed to get out several music videos, and has been able to perform at many big events across the country.

His music doesn’t feature comedy and is more about serious, positive subjects. Commenting on how he comes up with the lyrics for his songs, he had explained: “Relationships, things that happen in the community, lifestyle, stuff that people are going through in life; reality stuff, like people hating on each other,” he said.

Asked about some of the improvements he’d like to see in the entertainment industry, Geer had proffered that people’s work and local talent should be recognized and valued. “The radio stations need to be valuing such work and not just taking music and playing it like that. We need to get copyright, royalties; those kinds of things. The

He called for more local events to be organised. “We need to get local events, more events that feature local artistes as opposed to international ones. We have to showcase our own.

Put them on stage, give them a spot,” he encouraged.

Judges wrap up first round of ‘Talent Search’ competition

FTER sorting through hundreds of virtual performances to come up with the best ones, the judges of the Guyana Talent Search have been able to wrap up the first round of the competition and have all expressed how anxious they are to move ahead with the exciting show.

Talent Search Guyana, one of the latest initiatives by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, features stirring performances of participants from all across Guyana, and is not just confined to singing.

Persons with an array of talents were encouraged to participate, including those who are dancers, poets, artists; whatever skill they thought they had. And the competition features persons of all ages and from all walks of life.

After the end of the first audition, one of the judges, Poonam Singh, reflected on her own experiences participating in competitions, especially one at 16 years old where she was before Joel Ghansham, one of the very judges she is now working along with.

Her experiences have made her more empathetic towards new participants so that she can understand their feelings of having to perform before others and be judged.

“What I really look for in a star performance is the energy and how they act on stage and how they look. You have to come well dressed, with that energy, with that vibe that we all can feel and connect with you,” Poonam expressed.

Fellow judge Timeka Marshall said what makes this competition different is that it is not just looking for singers but talent that comes in any form. She said she is looking forward to seeing those who have made it through the virtual auditions in person.

Marshall also expressed that she is look-

ing for persons with raw talent who may need help to better their skills.

Ghansham commented following the first audition that he thought it’s fantastic that despite the pandemic, the team could’ve still been creative enough to continue to contribute to culture and entertainment.

“Being a star can be pretty simple,” Ghansham noted, as she encouraged participants to be true to themselves and remain humble in everything they do. “But it’s also important to walk like a star, act like a star, dress like a star, talk like a star.”

The fourth judge, Akelo ‘DJ Akelo’ Elliott, said it is the first time he’s judging in such a big competition. “I’m looking for presence. When I see you, if I’m on my phone Whatsapping, I must stop and focus on you. I’m not looking for someone who will tell me they’ll do better next year; I want a star now,” he expressed.

He further mentioned his intentions to be honest and real in the competition as the judges seek to explore the many talents that are hidden all across Guyana.

While the show was pre-recorded at this stage, the semi-finals and finals will be done live. It is being shown on Hits and Jams Television (HJTV), National Communications Network (NCN), Multi-Technology Vision (MTV), National Television Network (NTN), E-Networks and the Ministry’s Facebook page.

The winning prize is not yet known, however, the names of the top talents are said to be the first that will be hired by the Ministry for shows and other events. The judges will also be mentoring the talents who made it through the audition rounds.

The competition will continue this Sunday at 19:00 hours and will continue every Sunday until the grand finale on May 26, 2021.

Young musician hones craft in religious music N AWAZ Khan grew up in a religious home and developed a love for the music that his family enjoyed; so much so that he started singing and playing instruments whenever he would attend the mosque.

Now known as ‘Master Nawaz Khan’, the young musician hails from Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and does mechanics as his day job. But he’s become so skillful with the musical instruments that he now uses them professionally.

An Islamic specialist in Bollywood classical, Urdu, Qaseedas, Qawwali, and Sufis, Nawaz plays the harmonium, dholak, and daf.

According to a publication called India Instruments, harmoniums can produce chords, melody and drones all at once and can create a warm, rich, natural sound. They are easy to play and their features make them the most popular instruments for the accompaniment of any style of classical, devotional or popular singing in India.

The dholak, a double-headed drum, is another very popular tool that Nawaz plays, along with the daf, a frame drum.

“I love this kind of music because I was born in a home where music was always being played. I liked how people can utilise their vocals and I thought that I can do the same,” Nawaz told Buzz this week.

He’s never before been trained in music, but he now has a guru, Michael Ramkisson, who is giving him lessons on how to better his talents. “I was self-trained, but when I started doing music professionally, he started coaching me.”

It’s only been about four years now since Nawaz started using his music skills professionally. And because he’s so good at what he does, he’s even been able to partake in some Imam duties on occasion.

Nawaz dreams of a day that he will be able to go on a scholarship to India to study

music. “I’m hoping to be chosen to go to music school in India. There is hardly any scope for advancement in Guyana and that depresses me when I think of it sometimes.”

However, he said he copes with the feelings and makes do with whatever small tasks and jobs he can do. In fact, he often gets hired for jobs to sing.

“Although I am a Muslim, I am very fond of bhajans,” he expressed.

Nawaz has participated and won in many Muslim competitions locally and internationally. “For 2019, I am the Qaseeda champion for the Caribbean,” Nawaz said, adding that he would eventually love to start an Indian classical band.

Nawaz said he is proud of himself and the way he is using his life at the moment and believes in having a lot of self-confidence.

He describes himself as a friendly, humble young man who tries to live a life based on fairness and equality.

He also makes an effort to make others feel comfortable around him.

India’s top umpire Nitin Menon pulls out of IPL

NEW DELHI: India’s top umpire Nitin Menon has pulled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) after his family was struck by a couple of COVID-19 cases, while his Australian counterpart Paul Reiffel’s attempts at leaving hit a dead end because of his country’s suspension of air travel with India.

It is learnt that Menon, a resident of Indore, has left the IPL bio-bubble after his wife and mother tested positive for COVID-19. Menon is the only Indian in the ICC elite panel of umpires and was recently praised for his work during India’s home series against England.

“Yes, Nitin has left as his immediate family members have COVID-19 and he is currently not in a mental state to conduct games,” a BCCI

official told PTI. In Reiffel’s case, the Australian government’s imposition of a travel ban on flights to and from India in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases here led to his being unable to leave the bubble after initial information suggested that he has made the move.

“I tried to, but the flight through Doha, I wasn’t able to go through as an Australian,” Reiffel told the ‘Herald’ and ‘The Age’ yesterday from his hotel in Ahmedabad.

“They shut the avenue off. I know a couple of the guys got back that way through there, but the avenue was closed, so I had to stay.

Yesterday, I was booked to go, but it got cancelled,” he said.

According to reports, Reiffel will continue to officiate and will return home

with the rest of the Australian contingent involved in the IPL currently.

“I was 10 minutes away from leaving the bubble, so I’m very lucky,” Reiffel said.

Menon is the second Indian to pull out of the tournament after off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who also went home after all his family members tested positive.

Three Australians - Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa - left home due to the unprecedented health crisis in India.

However, BCCI is going ahead with the tournament and interim CEO Hemang Amin has assured all players and support staff that they remain safe in the bio-bubble.

Health authorities have, however, kept strong protocols in place to mitigate against the spread of the

virus and Powell said CPL would not be exempt.

“All persons coming in will be subject to all typical protocols so quarantine will be required, bearing in mind that we are at the moment reviewing our protocols even outside of CPL, as more and more persons become vaccinated,” he outlined.

“Whatever the national protocol is, that will apply in the CPL so persons will be required to present negative PCR tests three days before travel to St Kitts and Nevis.

Karunaratne, Thirimanne centuries deflate Bangladesh on opening day

CENTURIES from Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne gave Sri Lanka full control of the first day of the second Test in Pallekele, as the home side ended at 291 for 1 at stumps.

The pitch offered next to nothing to the Bangladesh bowlers, but the visitors were also guilty of sitting on defensive lengths and spreadout fields from quite early on.

It allowed Karunaratne, fresh from his maiden double-century last weekend, and Thirimanne to dominate once they had managed to bat out the first couple of hours cautiously.

The pair added 209, Sri Lanka's first 200-plus opening stand since 2011, and the first in the country in 21 years. The partnership, which is also the pair's third consecutive century stand, ended when Karunaratne was caught behind off Bangladesh's debutant Shoriful Islam shortly after tea.

Karunaratne made 118 off 190 balls, having struck 15 boundaries. During the course of the innings, he crossed 5 000 Test runs, apart from reaching his 12th Test century, the most by any active Sri Lanka batter.

Thirimanne was the more circumspect of the two, as he reached his third Test century - the second this year - having piled up his fifth fifty-plus score in his last six innings.

Thirimanne was unbeaten on 131 off 253 balls with 14 fours, alongside Oshada Fernando, who kept things calm after the long opening partnership.

Fernando ended on 40 not out off 98 balls.

Karunaratne and Thirimanne had begun the day slowly, adding just 66 runs in 27 overs in the first session.

They had to ride out initial movement from Taskin Ahmed and Abu Jayed.

Ahmed in particular was a real menace in his first two spells. He could have had an early success but Najmul Hossain Shanto dropped Karunaratne on 28 during the first session.

Only Taskin and newcomer Shoriful looked penetrative over the length of their spells, but they too seemed to have gradually got tired.

Jayed hardly tried anything

other than a largely straight line and length, while the spinners Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled too quickly in most of their spells.

Karunaratne largely focussed on getting his boundaries through the range between wide third man and extra cover. Eleven out of his 15 boundaries came through this region, as he hardly scored through mid-off and mid-on. Thirimanne too got plenty of runs through point and cover, and also played some fascinating straight drives besides a couple through wide mid-on.

Premier League: Executives from ESL clubs forced to quit advisory roles EXECUTIVES at clubs involved in the failed European Super League (ESL) have been forced to resign from advisory roles at the Premier League.

The move is a consequence of the so-called 'big six' teams attempting to set up a league which drew widespread criticism before it fell apart.

The 14 other Premier League clubs felt betrayed by the move and demanded that executives involved, including Manchester United's Ed Woodward, Liverpool's Tom Werner and Manchester City's Ferran Soriano, step down.

Woodward and Werner will no longer sit on the Premier League's club broadcast advisory group.

Soriano and Arsenal's chief executive Vinai Venkatesham will be removed from the club’s strategic advisory group, while Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck will no longer be on the audit and remuneration committee.

Tottenham, who were also part of the short-lived ESL breakaway, were not represented in the three groups, which were introduced 18 months ago, and discuss ideas before they are presented to clubs to vote on.

The pair helped the tourists dismiss their hosts for 176 in the first innings, before Pakistan reached 103 without the loss of a wicket in reply at the close to trail by 73 runs in the first game of the two-match series.

There must be consequences for ‘big six’ - Richard Scudamore

THERE must be consequences for the six English clubs who tried to join the ill-fated European Super League (ESL), according to former Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore.

He said the decision from those sides to join the controversial league had changed English football forever.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham all withdrew from plans last week.

“I don’t believe life will ever be the same after last Sunday,” he said.

All six Premier league sides withdrew from the plans on Tuesday, April 20, after widespread criticism and protests.

It was just 48 hours after the plans were announced. Prime Minister Boris Johnson was among those who criticised the league publicly.

Speaking to Gary Neville’s The Overlap YouTube channel, Scudamore, 61, who ran the top division for 19 years, added: “I think the actions of the six have altered the dynamic forever. There has to be some consequences. Things have to change.

“There is no switch you can turn that suddenly builds back trust with these people and the fan base. It is a long and difficult road back. After a period of some healing, we have to rebuild this thing.

“I cannot explain why any of them thought it was a good idea. I am the person who had been telling them for years it was a crazy idea and could not happen. What’s happened in the last week is that it’s been stopped and that’s the right thing.

“Anyone who knows me would know I found this completely unacceptable.

“There has to be some consequences. I think something will have to be extracted by way of undertakings or attitude. I am not going to get involved about whether there should be punishments or sanctions.” (BBC Sport

Alastair Cook’s century helps Essex take control at Worcestershire

ALASTAIR Cook made his 68th first-class century and his first of the summer - as Essex ground out the beginnings of a big total on day one against Worcestershire at New Road.

On a ground where he averages almost three figures, Cook made 117, hitting 17 fours in five-and-a-half hours.

Cook shared a 71-run morning session stand with Nick Browne (29).

He then shared a further 139 with Tom Westley (75*) before becoming the second of Alzarri Joseph’s two scalps.

Mike Tyson claims he will fight Lennox Lewis in September MIKE Tyson has claimed he will fight Lennox Lewis in September in what would be a sensational rematch between the two former world heavyweight champions.

Tyson returned to the ring for the first time in 15 years last November when he met Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition bout.

The 54-year-old expressed a desire to pursue regular fights following the contest, and has seemingly set his sights on the retired 55-year-old Lewis.

The Briton defeated Tyson by eighth-round knockout when the pair met in 2002 in a world title fight, with Lewis retiring one year later as a unified world champion.

They also clashed in the pre-fight press conference and traded insults in the build-up to the bout with the American telling Lewis he would “eat his children”.

Tyson has now increased speculation that the old rivals will face each other in the ring once again, telling TMZ: “I’m gonna fight Lennox Lewis ... September.”

Tyson has made such claims before and has been linked with a meeting with former foe Evander Holyfield, with the 58-year-old American stating that he would sign up to a trilogy fight for at least $25 million.

(REUTERS)-Former Sri Lanka pace bowler Nuwan Zoysa has been banned from all cricket for six years after an International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption tribunal found him guilty of breaching its code.

The ban for 42-year-old Zoysa, who has also had coaching stints with the Sri Lanka women’s team and the men’s ‘A’ squad, is retroactive from October 31, 2018 when he was provisionally suspended.

“In his role as a national coach, he should have acted as a role model. Instead,

he became involved with a corrupter and attempted to corrupt others,” the ICC said in a statement.

“Contriving to fix a game betrays the basis of sporting principles. It will not be tolerated in our sport.”

In November, Zoysa was found guilty of match-fixing by an independent anti-corruption tribunal.

Zoysa was provisionally suspended in 2018 and charged with three offences under the anti-corruption code, including “being party to an agreement or effort to fix” a match.

He has also been charged with breaching four counts of the Emirates Cricket Board’s anti-corruption code for players who participated in a T10 league in the United Arab Emirates in 2017 and the proceedings are ongoing, the ICC said.

The left-arm bowler played 30 Tests and 95 oneday internationals from 19972007.

Earlier this month, former Sri Lanka all-rounder Dilhara Lokuhettige was banned from cricket for eight years due to corruption.

The BCB, he stated has over the last three years assisted hundreds of youths

with educational materials, school bags and cycles, while dozens this year has benefitted from educational grants. The BCB has also sponsored a one year educational scholarship for a cricketer attending the University of Guyana. Foster disclosed that the next area to benefit from the programme would be the Berbice River Sub Association, while more students from the Upper Corentyne, Lower Corentyne, West Berbice and New Amsterdam/Canje areas would also receive grants.

The main objective, he stated is to assist at least seventy cricketers with grants in 2021, while school bags would also be shared out with educational materials.

Special thanks were extended to the Management of Vitality Inc for their support of Berbice cricket. In addition to sponsoring the Educational Trust Fund, the company and its Charity Foundation recently donated $1.4M worth of cricket gears to eight Berbice clubs and sponsored a 20/20 cricket tournament for Upper Corentyne clubs. The Vitality Inc Foundation would

also construct a home for a less fortunate employee of the BCB. The construction for the mother of five is expected to start shortly after some minor arrangements are put into place. This would represent a first of its kind for the pro active cricket board, which is now focusing on off the field activities due to the ongoing covid19 pandemic.

Director of Vitality Inc Abbas Hamid stated that his company was very pleased with the state of development taking place in Berbice cricket and as such was delighted to be associated with it. He joined with Foster to stress the importance of education and discipline. Vitality, he noted, was committed to playing a major role in the development of Guyana and intends to become a major force in the country by offering service of the highest standard.

Government anticipates economic boost from CPL T20 tournament -Sports Minister Powell

Sports Minister Jonel Powell said he expected the popular Twenty20 tournament, scheduled to bowl off August 28, to have a positive impact especially on hotels and restaurants with a boost also anticipated for the services sector.

This, Powell said, would translate into increased employment at a difficult time when there was little economic activity due to pandemic.

An economic boost is being anticipated for St Kitts and Nevis due to the hosting of the CPL.

bearing in mind the substantial economic benefits that would flow from being able to host the entire CPL here in St Kitts and Nevis, particularly at a time when things are very slow because of the pandemic, we thought it to be a very prudent move to try and get the games here and we’ve been successful,” Powell said.

“Our tourism sector has taken a very hard hit like everywhere else in the region so to be able to get – I think the calculation is over a thousand rooms – at a point in time when those rooms would not necessarily be filled, is a good thing to have.

“To be able to have the entire CPL cohort here for some six weeks, we are looking at at the hotel rooms, the added staff that would need to be hired in order to take care of the

capacity, the spillover effect in terms of restaurants and entertainment, the simple things such as catering, transportation – all of these things are opportunities for ordinary people here in St Kitts and Nevis to get jobs at a difficult time.”

Last year, Trinidad and Tobago hosted the tournament in its entirety as organisers were forced to resort to one territory due to the onset of COVID-19 in the Caribbean.

Figures cited by CPL indicated US$51.5 million in sponsorship value having accrued to Trinidad and Tobago throughout the period of the tournament.

In 2019, CPL said St Kitts benefitted to the tune of US$22.3 million in terms of “total economic impact”, with 5 964 hotel rooms filled during the five-match leg of the tournament.

And Powell said even though there had been costs associated with staging the tournament, those fell within the recently negotiated hosting agreement, and would be outweighed by the overall benefits to the country.

“It all (cost) would’ve fallen in tandem with our extension of the existing five-year hosting agreement,” he explained while speaking on Starcom Radio’s Mason and Guest.

“It came to an end in 2020 so we would have renegotiated that for another five years, and so all of that was considered within the negotiations, and we’ve been able to work with CPL to offset a lot of costs that would normally arise – cost in terms of stadia agreements and rentals in particular.”

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Former Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board chief executive Suruj Ragoonath has questioned the real economic benefits of hosting the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and believes the decision by St Kitts to stage this year’s tournament was a “risky investment” especially with the future of international travel still clouded by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Ragoonath, who played two Tests for West Indies in 1999, contended the revenue generated from staging the popular Twenty20 franchise tournament did not justify what regional governments were asked to invest.

Last year, Trinidad and Tobago were sole hosts of the tournament but Ragoonath

said the biggest impact for the country was creating a much needed “distraction” at the height of the pandemic across the region.

“The government of Trinidad and Tobago has invested heavily over the years in CPL and mind you, I don’t think it has benefited us economically as has been postulated by all those different reports that have been generated,” said Ragoonath, who stepped down as CEO of Trinidad’s cricket governing body in 2018 after three years in the post.

“From my experience being CEO of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (and) being involved in CPL, it would be interesting to know exactly what was the outlay or what was the financial output from St Kitts … compared to what they’re going

In announcing St Kitts as the host nation for the 2021 edition of the tournament, CPL organisers said last year’s tournament had been carried to a “record audience of over 500 million”, resulting in US$51.5 million in sponsorship value for the twin-island state.

And even though the tournament was played behind closed doors because of COVID-19, CPL said tourist boards across the region had benefitted from US$258 million in media exposure.

However, Ragoonath said while he was sure St Kitts would leverage the investment to their benefit, he argued that the ongoing global pandemic meant returns would be decreased.

“I know that our government would have spent something like $5M hosting for one year, and then in addition to that, there would have been other waivers that would have had to be given to host the tournament,” the 53-year-old Trinidadian told Starcom Radio’s Mason and Guest cricket show.

“The thing is, hosting

in a pandemic, travel is not allowed and that in itself is going to reduce the measure of return that one would get on an investment like this.

“I don’t want to be negative towards the St Kitts government. I think they know what they’re doing, they are experienced and I’m sure they would be using it in some way to try and promote the country.

“Yes it’s a risky investment because we don’t know when travel will be allowed again and the fact that they have handled the COVID situation exceptionally well is a positive.

“But one has to weigh that as against economic opportunities but that is for the government of St Kitts and Nevis to decide.”

The CPL is set to bowl off August 28.

Teenaged quicks set for training camp

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – Teenaged fast bowlers Zaida James and Jannillea Glasgow are among eight uncapped players named in a 30-member training squad for a month-long high performance camp set to get underway here Sunday.

James, 16, is a left-armer who hails from St Lucia while Glasgow, also 16, is out of St Vincent and the Grenadines. They will be joined by Japhina Joseph, Rashada Williams, Caneisha Isaac, Shanika Bruce, Mandy Mangru and Rachel Vincent, as those without international experience.

Chief selector Ann Browne-John said the new faces selected for the camp were in keeping with the ongoing strategy of expanding the talent pool.

“In an effort to continue to unearth talent, eight players have been included who were not in the January camp,” Browne-John pointed out.

“It serves as an opportunity for the coaches and selectors to look at some of the young up-and-coming players. Due to the pandemic, a regional tournament has not been held yet, so the players haven’t had the opportunity

to impress the selectors in competitive matches.

“Heavy emphasis has been placed on batters including first-timers Rachel Vincent – an opening batter from Trinidad and Tobago – and Mandy Mangru, a young player from Guyana who has been impressive in the Under-19 tournament.”

Batsman Kycia Knight, who has struggled with injury of recent, has been recalled and will train alongside captain Stafanie Taylor and regulars Hayley Matthews, Shemaine Campbelle and Shakera Selman.

The camp will be the second one staged this year, following on from the first one in January which featured 24 players, and was overseen by head coach Courtney Walsh.

Browne-John said the training camp was a critical one especially with several international assignments on the horizon. “It is very important to have the West Indies players back in a training camp as the coaches can continue to help them hone their skills as we prepare for our next series,” she explained.

“Most of the top international teams have now restarted playing and it is critical for the West Indies team to prepare as we antici-

pate more international cricket coming up this summer.”

Of major importance will be the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to bowl off in Sri Lanka in December.

The tournament will determine the last three spots for next year’s 50-over World Cup in New Zealand.

For the camp, Cricket West Indies (CWI) said it would be working along with local health authorities and the Ministry of Sport in ensuring strong safety protocols amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

BCCI saysT20 World Cup could be moved to UAE

THIS year’s Twenty20 World Cup could be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) if India continues to suffer with a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament is due to begin in October, but the COVID-19 death toll in India has passed 200 000, with at least 300 000 new infections every day in the past week.

Last week, India joined the UK’s travel red list - effectively banning travel to and from the country. Other countries - including Australia - have also closed their borders to India.

Speaking to the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Dhiraj Malhotra, from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said he is hopeful India could still host the T20 World Cup. “I’ve just been named one of the tournament directors, so I’m doing everything we can to make sure it happens,” said Malhotra, who is general manager for game development with the BCCI. “We will be doing normal scenario, and worst case scenario, so, with all that, we’re talking to the ICC at the moment.”

Mackenzie Sports Club to hold AGM, Biennial Elections on May 30

COMING out of Mackenzie Sports Club’s April 15 Statutory Meeting, held at the MSC pavilion, a decision was taken that the important MSC’s Annual General Meeting and Biennial Elections will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 15:00hrs at the MSC main pavilion.

The current administration of the MSC is led by its president Avery Trim, with

Joseph Chapman as General Secretary. The Government of Guyana had approached the MSC executive body about converting that sports facility into one of three such multi-purpose facilities to be built across the country.

Funding for this is expected to come from the Government of China and discussions were also started on the process towards this becoming a reality.

However, there were initial concerns about the suitability of this structure to be located in central Mackenzie.

A concept drawing is being done which will be presented to the Committee of Management, which comprises the elected executives and others appointed to function on that Management Committee.
