Giftland 'turns up heat' on unvaccinated employees –– as company mandates weekly negative COVID-19 tests

WITH dozens of new coronavirus cases being detected daily, Giftland Group of Companies is now mandating its unvaccinated employees to submit negative PCR tests at the beginning of each work week.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company opined that “It is critical that all people in the workforce get vaccinated against COVID-19, because of highly contagious variants.” The release also pointed to the fact that COVID-19-related hospitalisations and deaths are on the rise throughout the country.

“It has become a worldwide known fact that 99.5 per cent of all persons in hospitals and dying from the dreaded COVID viruses are unvaccinated,” the Giftland franchise recognised.

The company said that its decision is in keeping with continued efforts to protect its employees and patrons, and create a safe work and shopping environment for all Guyanese.

Giftland’s announcement follows the release of a strongly-worded statement from the Private Sector Commission (PSC) last week.

The grouping had called on its member companies to ensure that all of its unvaccinated employees submit medically certified proof that they do not have COVID-19. The PSC, in recognising the notable rise in coronavirus cases locally, also urged that government makes it mandatory for “all medical and security personnel in frontline contact with other persons to either be vaccinated or provide evidence of a medically current COVID-19 negative test.”

The PSC also made a special call for “all places providing hospitality and entertainment services, including restaurants, require evidence

Earlier in May, Giftland became the first company to announce that it would not be hiring unvaccinated persons.

STERLING EFFORTS Nonetheless, the PSC also lauded the government’s “sterling efforts to obtain vaccinations for our people in an effort to achieve herd immunity for the nation”.

As it is, Guyana is one of the very few countries that have managed to secure enough vaccines to inoculate its entire adult population.

Notwithstanding this feat, there are some Guyanese who remain reluctant to take the vaccines. This situation was further compounded by a call from Opposition Leader, Joseph Harmon, for a suspension in the administering of

Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, even though he himself had been fully immunised with the same vaccine.

Nonetheless, the PSC, in its statement, had endorsed the position taken by the Adviser to the Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who maintained that “if you want to exercise a right to not take the vaccine [then] you must be prepared to face the consequences”.

Dr. Ramsammy, a medical practitioner and a former Health Minister, had indicated that “while someone has the right to refuse the vaccine, those persons do not have a right to expose the rest of us to their reckless risks.”

LOGICAL FULFILMENT Referencing Dr. Ramsammy’s arguments, Giftland said that its decision is a “logical fulfilment of the ethical commitment of all workers to put patrons as

well as their colleagues first and [to] take all steps necessary to ensure their health and well-being are secured.”

Like the PSC, Giftland also lauded the government’s vaccination efforts, noting that the “Existing COVID-19 vaccine mandates have proven effective”.

It noted too that “As the healthcare community leads the way in procuring vaccines for our country, we hope all other employers across the

country will implement effective policies to encourage vaccination. The health and safety of workers, families, communities and the nation depend on it.”

Ever since the coronavirus began its global rampage in 2020, the vaccines have been hailed as the only means by which the world can exit the current pandemic which has taken millions of lives, and continues to threaten the lives of those who have not been

vaccinated.

Although the vaccines do not guard against the virus in its entirety, it provides enough antibodies to guard against severe symptoms and death. In Guyana, no vaccinated persons have been hospitalised or have died due to the virus. The country’s death toll currently stands at 530, and unfortunately, counting.

The government continues to ramp up its vaccination capacity. Efforts have also been made to extend vaccination hours well into the nights.

Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, had also encouraged Guyanese to take the vaccines now, as it could possibly become a costly commodity, due to increases in demand, coupled with globally proven efficacy.

So far, Guyana has been administering the Sputnik V vaccine, Sinopharm, and the AstraZeneca.

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic government is also working assiduously to secure the United States’ Pfizer vaccine, which is the only one approved for children. President, Dr. Irfaan Ali had assured that once Guyana is able to secure such vaccines, immunising the country’s children will be priority.

ALMOST 17 months after being accused of attempting to thwart the outcome of the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections, the country’s Chief Elections Officer, Keith Lowenfield; the Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Roxanne Myers; and the District Four Returning Officer, Clairmont Mingo, are still in the employ of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

In yet another attempt to remove the infamous trio from their posts, the government-nominated GECOM Commissioners have resorted to having their motions for dismissal amended to take into consideration the fact that Lowenfield, Myers, and Mingo are all contracted workers whose contracts provide for termination.

This was confirmed by government Commissioner and Attorney-at-Law Bibi Shadick, who explained that when the motions for dismissal were initially filed, she and her colleagues from the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) were not privy to the employment contracts of the three GECOM officials.

“Last week, we got copies of the contracts,” Shadick informed the Guyana Chronicle on Tuesday.

She explained that now that the motions have been amended, GECOM has also been presented with the op-

“We are not removing the option of dismissal; we are doing this as an alternative to say that if the Commission does not find [grounds] to dismiss [Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo], then there is the possibility of terminating their contracts,” Shadick indicated.

She further opined that based on all the evidence that is currently before it, “The Commission can very well choose to dismiss” the trio, who are also facing multiple criminal charges relating to electoral fraud committed last year.

Reflecting on the motions piloted by herself, and PPP/C colleagues Sase Gunraj and Manoj Narayan, Shadick said that the submissions call for Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo to be summarily dismissed, based on the fact that they are statutory officers who were guilty of breaching the law.

Nonetheless, should GECOM pursue the termination of their contacts instead of having them dismissed, the three officers could still stand to benefit, or, as Shadick termed it, “be rewarded for bad behaviour,” since they could have their contracts terminated, and still be able to capitalise on the payments offered in lieu of notice.

The attorney-at-law noted, however, that once a person’s contract is terminated, their legal options would be significantly limited, since the option is clearly outlined in their contracts, and “an employer cannot be forced into hiring an employee” they do not want to hire.

MUST GO “At the end of the

day, though, our goal is that they [Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo] must not work in the secretariat of GECOM anymore. Either option will achieve that result,” Shadick said.

She reminded the Guyana Chronicle, also, that following the filing of the dismissal motions, Lowenfield had moved to the courts to prevent her and her colleague Sase Gunraj from debating and voting on the issue, since it was the latter who had brought the motion, and she who had seconded it. “That is to be heard on Thursday,” Shadick indicated.

During GECOM’s previous meeting, the opposition-nominated Commissioners had walked out of the engagement in support of Lowenfield’s arguments.

On Tuesday, Shadick said that there were attempts to delay the hearing of the motions, on the grounds that the matter was in court.

The former PPP/C minister rubbished Lowenfield’s arguments,

Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Roxanne Myers referencing the fact that the National Assembly allows a member to move, debate and vote on motions. “That is how it is,” Shadick insisted.

It must be noted, however, that due to the construct of GECOM, which has three nominated commissioners representing each of the two major political parties, the ultimate success of the motions rests on the vote of GECOM’s Chairperson, who, in this case, is Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh.

It was in June, more than a year after the elections, that the PPP/C-nominated commissioners tabled the three motions seeking the “immediate dismissal” of Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo.

As it is, Lowenfield is faced with three counts of Misconduct in Public Office, and three counts of Forgery, while Mingo was charged with four counts of Misconduct in Public Office, and Myers with two counts of Misconduct in Public Office.

In addition to Lowenfield, Mingo and Myers, Chairperson of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Volda Lawrence; Opposition activist, Carol Joseph; the CEO’s clerks, Michelle Miller and Denise Bob-Cummings; Elections Officer, Shefern February, and Information Technology Officer, Enrique Livan were also charged.

They are all accused of inflating the results of Region Four, Guyana’s largest voting district, to give the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition a majority win at the March 2, 2020 polls, when in fact the PPP/C had won by 15,000 more votes.

Based on the events of the 2020 elections, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has insisted that it is not wise for Guyana to have any other elections over which Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo are allowed to preside.

It is for this reason that the Head of State has refrained from announcing a date for the country’s Local Government Elections, even though $1.1 billion has already been budgeted in 2021 for this purpose.

“It was put very nicely by Commissioner Narayan today [Tuesday], that it is 17 months since these people behaved badly, and it is not acceptable that we have not been able to rid the Commission of them,” Shadick concluded.

By Rabindra Rooplall AN achievement quite often celebrated by persons both young and old is the acquisition of land or property, as this is considered, most times, a major step towards economic prosperity and independence.

The benefits are cumulative, especially regarding the future value of property or land acquired today. So, when an opportunity to obtain such an asset presents itself, there would always be a willingness to make crucial sacrifices.

This was evidenced by the actions of a 29-year-old policeman, Jason Moses, who was among 1,000 applicants who received their titles for land at Block 18 Golden Grove, East Bank of Demerara (EBD), during the government’s fourth “Dream Realised Housing Drive” held at the National Stadium over the past two days.

Having applied for land since 2014, Moses had almost given up hope that he would one day be contacted by the Ministry of Housing and Water for a plot of land. As luck would have it, though seven years later, Moses was contacted by the ministry and asked to visit the National Stadium with his wife.

The young policeman was ready to “strike while

the iron is hot,” so he sold his car to ensure that he was financially equipped to pay for a house lot.

“I sold it [the car] out because I cannot live in a car, and by God’s grace everything come through… We are renting and it’s been a long struggle, but by God’s grace everything will work itself out and I will build,” a joyful Moses said.

This achievement is a welcome change in his life, as the road has been rough over the past few years, especially after the passing of his mother in 2017.

In relating one of the challenges faced after the death of his mom, the policeman said that his wife gave up her job to care for his sister, who is a person living with disabilities.

With the acquisition of land, Moses is hopeful that some of those challenges will be alleviated and that the road ahead will be smoother.

Christopher Allen, one of the recent beneficiaries, said he had applied for a house lot since 2006 and was surprised at how rapid the process moved along for him to receive his house lot at the National Stadium.

The father of two, who lives at Timehri, said: “This will change my life and make it 100 per cent better and I am thankful and would like to express thanks to the government for making this a reality.”

When the new government assumed office in August, 2020, it pledged to create new housing developments to ensure that more Guyanese own their own homes.

Today, the Ministry of Housing and Water is executing a series of infrastructural works valuing $14 billion.

The areas being developed include Little Diamond/Great Diamond, Prospect and Providence, on the East Bank of Demerara; Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme on the outskirts of Georgetown, as well as the expansion of several East Coast of Demerara communities, namely Mon Repos, Vigilance, Bladen Hall and Strathspey, along with Experiment in Region Five and No. 79 Village, Ordinance/Fortland and Hampshire/Williamsburg in Region Six; and in Region 10.

THOUSANDS TO BENEFIT President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, had said he is confident that his government’s housing programme will benefit tens of thousands of Guyanese.

“Blessed is the child who have his own,” Shevin Seepersaud, a father of three, said after receiving his title.

Richard Trotz, a sergeant of police who benefitted from the recent housing drive, said that as a young professional, he had applied for a house lot in January 2015 and was pleased when he received a call recently to acquire a plot of land.

“It is a good initiative whereby young professionals like myself can develop and try to own their own home. Currently I am living with my father,” he said.

Trotz continued: “Being a young professional, I would like to advise other citizens to apply for a house lot and try to develop themselves in any way they can, by seeking employment, seeking educational opportunities, and by obtaining a house lot they can develop themselves and start a family.”

A nonagenarian, Hilda Persaud, who applied for her house lot in 2005, said: “I thank God, the ministers and the President and may God bless every one of them. I feel happy… so long now I have been moving from place to place and I am living in my daughter’s house, whatever little help I can get from anywhere I will be thankful for it.”

Persaud received her house lot free of charge as a result of a timely intervention from Minister Croal.

SENIOR Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh has lauded Adrian Collins and Carole Fletcher for their hard work and vision, which have enabled the employment of some 700 persons in the Business Process Outsourcing industry (BPO), including 500 in Guyana.

Both are the proprietors of the Emerge Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) facility located at Camp and Robb Streets, Lacytown, Georgetown.

During a tour of the facility, Minister Singh, who was accompanied by Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), Dr. Peter Ramsaroop, met with Director of Operations, Dalgeish Joseph, and Director of Client Services, Aisha D’Abreu.

According to a release, he encouraged the businesspersons to ensure the expansion of operations to other regions, reiterating that the BPO sector has the potential to create jobs, generate income, spur economic activity, and improve lives.

The Senior Finance Minister further commended the

businesspersons for their investment in Guyana, alluding to the fact that the current Irfaan Ali-led government strongly supports any effort by businesses which align themselves with its vision of diversifying the economy, part of which includes promoting Guyana as a premier destination for BPO business. This, he noted, will also contribute to ensuring the country maintains a stable

macro-economic environment.

“In the pre-2015 period, we had already recognised the vast potential for BPO service, and we had invested a lot of policy effort into the sector,” Minister Singh said as he went on to explain that Emerge BPO is yet another example of what can be achieved by persons willing to invest in Guyana.

The minister had expressed similar sentiments during his visit and tour of Express International Incorporated, located in Georgetown, and Qualfon, at Providence, on the East Bank of

Demerara, both being BPO facilities.

He had referenced the fact that many international businesses are recognising Guyana as a prime destination for BPO services, especially given its English-speaking population, its educated workforce, and its proximity to the USA and Canada.

“As a government, we

would like to see the BPO sector continue to grow, as it will allow for the creation of jobs, and the generation of income,” the Finance Minister posited.

Leadership: The hallmark of Year One AUGUST 02, 2021, will officially mark one year of the Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali administration.

While there will be much analyses of that period, space will not allow for a detailed review here. That said, at such a juncture, it is imperative to contextualise what has been achieved, or not, taking into consideration what was inherited.

Dr. Ali took office at a very delicate period in our history. Just a year ago, there were glaring attempts by the then APNU/ AFC coalition government to subvert the will of the Guyanese people following the March 02, 2020, elections which the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) won.

In reality, the genesis of those attempts, which dragged the post elections period to five months, could be traced to October 2017 when President David Granger unconstitutionally swore in Justice James Patterson as Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

That action undoubtedly led to much concern over an emerging dictatorship for which Mr. Granger’s Party was infamous.

Naturally, uncertainty grew and the impact

on economic activity was inevitably negative.

Just about a year after, a no-confidence motion (NCM) against the APNU/AFC government was successfully passed in the National Assembly and the then coalition government refused to abide by the constitutional processes triggered by the NCM. Having been toppled by the NCM, the coalition government found ways, some frivolous and laughable, to illegally hold on to power.

With every passing day, that uncertainty grew, as well as fear, further crippling economic activity and imposing hardships on the citizenry. That, and what transpired during the five-month post elections period of 2020, tarnished the country’s international image and led to economic regression.

The COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 and its poor handling by the coalition compounded woes as many businesses were forced to close and unemployment rose. Those jobs lost were in addition to the thousands as a result of the APNU/AFC government closing a number of sugar estates without considering alternative employment.

When Dr. Ali took the oath of office as

Guyana’s 9th Executive President on August 02, 2020, he inherited a situation of a country in economic ruin and one without a clear plan and resources to combat the raging COVID-19 pandemic. The fact that the fear of a dictatorship and the resulting impact on mindsets and the country, ballooned before he took that oath, cannot be overstated.

It seemed déjà vu when the situation in October 1992 is taken into consideration.

What has since transpired in the first year of President Ali’s administration must be seen from the August 02, 2020, baseline. In that context, what has been outstanding in this first year is the leadership President Ali has provided.

This is evident in every aspect of his government’s extensive development plan for Guyana and Guyanese across the country. Immediately upon taking office, he implemented a comprehensive plan of action to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and one that saw efforts to boost capacity in terms of vital equipment and training, ramping up and decentralising testing and securing vaccines.

He operated on multiple tracts that included finding ways to gradually reopen

the country, to create jobs, to implement mega transformative projects and to strengthen and widen social services, as a few examples. Thousands of house lots and titles have been distributed, scholarships to build capacity are being awarded, cash grants to help mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19 were given out while the “Because We Care” initiative is ongoing.

Every sector is rapidly rolling out development programmes and policies with the direct intent to advance the country and its people. In the process, confidence and Guyana’s international image have been restored. As a result, investors are gravitating to the country for diverse projects as new opportunities are being created and dreams realised.

The many developmental projects implemented during this first year is testimony to the astute leadership of President Ali as, together with his Cabinet, the PPP/C government has truly brought Guyana to the cusp of transformation through modernisation as it did during the 23 years following the 1992 elections.

Duncan cannot speak even confidently on behalf of supporters of the opposition party Dear Editor, SHERROD Duncan’s hatred for the People’s Progressive Party Civic is well known.

Recently, he was on his programme talking about the current cost of living which allegedly has skyrocketed. He was also saying that the government is not doing what it should for the people of Guyana. He ended his feral blast by further alleging that the PPP “installed” regime is corrupt and lacks transparency.

If anyone listens to Mr. Duncan, they are bound to think he is knowledgeable and knows the mood of the people. They would also think that his party, the APNU+AFC is beyond reproach and has an

unblemished record when they were in office recently.

Mr. Editor, I want to make it clear that Mr. Duncan cannot speak for a majority of the people of Guyana. Secondly, Mr. Duncan cannot speak even confidently on behalf of the supporters of the opposition party, the PNC/R and APNU. Thirdly, the views expressed on the programme which is aired on his social media platform are not the views per say of even the AFC’s membership on the ground.

He thinks he is being effective by constantly launching a diatribe against the PPP/C Government. He is not because the facts, media and reality are not on his side.

The truth of the matter is Guyanese know that they are experiencing a silent

revolution that is sweeping away all of the things that the APNU+AFC did in office for themselves and their cronies. The mood of the people is with the PPP/C Government because it is showing the people that it cares about the little things that Mr. Duncan and the big boys don’t or didn’t.

The government is honouring commitment it made while in opposition to the people.

It is still keeping all the promises while handling the government and governance issues at the same time.

This government has earned my respect for its approach to several issues. Just look at how the government is handling the COVID-19 crisis and the floods at the same time and how it has boosted the levels of confidence of the private sector.

The ratings will go up for good governance in my book. One year of full growth and development is not at all bad.

I am not saying the cost of living has not gone up but this is not influenced by local policies, rather, COVID-19 and its effect on the world has played a major role in the skyrocketing cost for certain items.

The recent unprecedented flooding which brought untold devastation in the farming communities was also a major factor.

This government is good for Guyana.

The sooner Mr. Duncan and the opposition recognise this, the easier it will be to hold talks about other things.

Aviation authority supports flood-relief efforts

THE Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Monday handed over of $120,000 to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) to aid in its flood relief efforts.

Safety Coordinator, GCAA, Courtney Frank, said the authority is happy to be supporting, even in a small way, to assist individuals and families affected by the recent flooding.

Public Information Officer, CDC, Patrice Wishart, accepted the donation, a release from the Department of Public Information (DPI) said.

Since the flooding began in May, members of the private sector, non-governmental organisations and civil society have made significant contributions to the CDC’s national flood relief programme.

A Detailed Damage Sectoral Assessment on the flooding across the country was conducted in June by a team from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in collaboration with the CDC. The findings indicated the floods were severe. The team found that all impacted areas experienced damage to crops and livestock.

They also found that livelihoods have been disrupted and that the damage has created a decrease in supply, which has substantially increased market prices.

Government has committed to following up on the recommendations by CDEMA’s team.

The CDC continues to assist those individuals and families who have lost their assets, livestock and farms due to the nationwide flooding.

The Amaila Falls Project will greatly benefit all of us Dear editor, JUST recently, the Dr. Irfaan Ali-led PPP/C Government announced that it is looking to revive the 165 Megawatts (MW) Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP).

I strongly believe that this is a good move that will benefit hundreds of thousands of Guyanese, and as such, I write to you to express my views regarding same.

Through several media reports, I have taken note of the fact that the Office of the Prime Minister is currently looking for a partner to develop the project and it has published a request for proposals which outlines two options for the project’s development. The project’s construction

is intended to commence in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2025. In this regard, I want to emphasise that once this project is completed in the next four years it will bring an end to the electricity woes which we as Guyanese face ever-so-often.

I cannot think of any reason why such a project would be bad for the country, especially since the end result will be significantly beneficial to every single household.

However, it is to be recalled that the APNU+AFC, while in opposition and during their tenure in government, did everything possible to stymie this necessary initiative. They even liaised with certain media houses to feed false narratives to the Guyanese people regarding the AFHP. I recall clearly that Kaieteur News in partic-

ular parroted false claims with sensational headlines and even published outlandish claims of its own, time after time again to support the coalition’s stance on the project; a stance which is focused on hindering progress and development.

No sooner than the announcement of the PPP/C Government’s intention to restart this initiative, Kaieteur News is at it again. In its July 26 editorial under the headline “Return of the dragon- Amaila Falls Project”, the newspaper rehashed its usual negative and speculatory nonsense, much like it has been doing in relation to the oil and gas sector.

I urge all the readers to recall the many things along similar lines printed by the Kaieteur News about the construction of the

Marriott Hotel, Hope Canal and other infrastructural projects undertaken by the PPP/C Government and juxtapose them against the opposite reality today. All of the initiatives which Kaieteur News has criticised over the years have been successful. On that note, I urge every Guyanese reading to ignore the negativity being published by such media houses as their only focus is to paint the government in a bad light.

The AFHP will bring about immense benefits for us all and it is time we lend support to projects and initiatives that are geared at bettering our lives and developing our country at the same time. yours respectfully, Erin Northe

Praise for President and Housing Ministry in lots distribution

PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali and the Housing Ministry come in for kudos in their handling of housing issues, according to an opinion poll I conducted over the last week for the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA). Respondents express confidence in the work of both ministers.

Expectations for a house lot or public housing are very high throughout Guyana; demand is not being met as quickly as the public desires and backlog has been rising. Respondents in the poll showed paper work of a waiting period for a house lot exceeding 10 years and, in some cases, longer. Other applicants are more recent. The respondents are pleased with the progress being made

by the Irfaan Ali-led administration in meeting the housing demand and hope their turn for a lot or public housing would come sooner rather than later.

Providing public housing or house lots has been one of the greatest challenges facing all governments. The last administration failed to meet expectation and was accused of bias in giving lots and houses primarily to its supporters. Many families have turned to squatting or informal housing and or living with extended families or rentals. The government has been working to address the backlogs.

Based on the findings of the surveys, the public is overwhelmingly pleased with the efforts being made by Ministers Colin Croal and Susan Rodrigues to meet housing shortage making house lots available and constructing low-cost

houses for middle and low-income families. Both ministers have been very active on the ground meeting communities all across the country and in distributing house lots or turn-key homes.

The respondents of the latest July poll say that the PPP/C administration has done more to meet housing shortage in less than a year than the predecessor coalition regime did in five years.

Almost everyone believes that ensuring the public has a safe, affordable place to live should be a priority of government. They also say they are very grateful to the President and the Housing Ministers for the action taken since last August to address housing shortage.

House lot distribution has been peaking since last August. Respondents note that housing affordability is a problem.

While people almost unanimously agree

that affordable housing is very important, they are very concerned about the rising costs of housing. Greater attention should be paid to the cost of housing or the materials for construction. Lower income people say more needs to be done to make housing more affordable for them and to rein in prices for materials.

The poll also reveals that the public expects the government to continue to play an important role in making sure that housing is affordable and that communities are safe.

They also feel that government should give incentives to the private sector to engage in community housing development to meet rising demand.

Much-needed drainage works for Buxton/Friendship FARMERS of the Buxton/ Friendship area on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) will soon benefit from much-needed upgrades to the communities’ drainage and irrigation system.

This was announced by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha during a recent visit to the community. Over the past few months, Minister Mustapha has been engaging farmers’ groups from the community in a bid to resuscitate and develop the village’s agriculture sector.

On Tuesday afternoon, Minister Mustapha visited the community, and met with farmers from various

Colwyn Harding ordered to pay AG, policeman $1M each –– following second dismissal of ‘baton sodomy’ lawsuit

JUSTICE Navindra Singh, on Tuesday, dismissed the $80M lawsuit that Colwyn Harding had filed against the State for a second time and ordered him to pay costs in the sum of $1M each to Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall, S.C., and policeman, Devin Singh.

Harding had approached the court seeking damages after being allegedly sodomised with a baton while in police custody. In November

2013, he was detained at the Timehri Police Station on the allegation that he had assaulted a police officer and had resisted arrest.

On February 1, 2021, Justice Singh had first dismissed the case for want of prosecution. He subsequently granted an order recalling the previous order that had been made on the condition that Harding pay $150,000 to both the AG and Constable Singh on or before July 16, 2021.

As these payments remained unpaid up until Tuesday’s hearing, Justice Singh indicated that Harding’s actions stood dismissed, and he later awarded costs to the two respondents.

A notice to withdraw and discontinue the claims was filed on July 26, by Harding’s attorney Nigel Hughes, and came up for hearing on Tuesday also. During the hearing, Hughes explained that there have been difficulties contacting his client, and

Colwyn Harding that continuing efforts were made up until July 24.

However, Justice Singh indicated that since his court order was not complied with, the claims already stood dismissed as of the date of non-compliance. Harding also failed to present himself for the prosection of his claims.

The Attorney General’s Chambers was informed by the Administration Department of the Guyana Prison Service that Harding was

released on bail in the sum of $70,000 on April 21.

The Attorney General represented himself along with Beverley Bishop-Cheddie, Assistant Solicitor General; Loretta Noel, Senior Legal Advisor and State Counsel Tiffini Barton and Chevy Devonish.

In his civil action, Harding had contended that, while in custody, officers pushed a condom-covered baton into his anus, causing him to suffer internal injuries.

Constables Singh and Roselle Tilbury-Douglas were fingered in the alleged assault and baton sodomy of Harding and were charged.

However, in March 2016 the case against them was dismissed by Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court due to insufficient evidence. He had claimed that the two constables had beaten him during his detention until he lost consciousness. After regaining consciousness, he had begun to complain of feeling pain and bleeding from his anus. However, doctors had reported that they did

They noted that they observed the man to be suffering from an intestinal infection and condition. Harding in his High Court action had alleged that he was assaulted and battered by the ranks resulting in his sustaining injuries, and that his fundamental rights were breached as a result of the incident.

He contended that a foreign object was inserted into his anus triggering a need for corrective surgery, and that he was repeatedly assaulted while in custody.

The State had denied these claims, asserting that the medical evidence did not support Harding’s contention and that any surgical procedures undertaken were as a result of a medical condition he had developed.

In the lawsuit, Harding had sought damages in excess of $100,000 and exemplary damages for assault and battery and in excess of $80.4 million in exemplary damages for the breach of his fundamental right.

COVID vaccination messages released in indigenous languages

THE Ministry of Health has released a series of audio COVID-19 vaccination messages in the nine indigenous languages to ensure that Guyana’s First Peoples understand the impact of the disease and how to protect themselves.

Minister Anthony made this disclosure during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update, a Department of Public Information (DPI) release

said.

“In an effort to reach people and to get over these messages, the ministry has been able to hire someone who translated messages pertaining to vaccination, the importance of vaccination, the safety of vaccines, in all of the indigenous languages.

“We have been playing these as PSAs on the various radio stations and when people go into the

community, they have the PSAs that they can walk with so as to use that to explain to people,” he said.

Apart from the indigenous languages, some persons in other regions also speak a mixture of Portuguese and English or Portuguese, and in other areas, Spanish.

Dr Anthony said the ministry has been able to work with those bilingual or trilingual persons to

get the vaccination messages across.

Meanwhile, the minister is again appealing to faith-based organisations to inform their adherents of the importance of vaccination.

To date, 247,940 adults in Guyana have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 130, 785 have been fully vaccinated against the disease.

During the grand opening of Big Bird and Sons Fish and Meat Depot, Lallbacchan disclosed that the business will provide a variety of fresh fishes and meat, in wholesale and retail quantities, to those living in Supenaam and surrounding communities.

Trout, grey snapper and gillbacker are among the fishes that will be available, along with prawns, mutton, labba and duck.

The depot, which is located one minute away from the Supenaam Stelling, can be found in Stall 21 at the Supenaam Waterfront.

“Well, you know I own the

fish complex at Charity and I have several fishing boats, so I am trying to make fish and meat available throughout the entire Essequibo at affordable prices to suit everyone’s pockets,” the businessman said.

He said that persons would also be able to purchase dried fish.

Lallbacchan, in his remarks, said that he saw the business as an opportunity to serve his fellow Essequibians by providing quality fish and meat that is affordable.

“The Region has the waterfront stalls, they are safe and secure and I saw it as an investment. I hope other businesses can also utilize the stalls to showcase their business and also put new things out to the public,” he added.

The businessman offers a similar service to the residents of Charity.

Suspected robber found hiding in Essequibo house A MAN, who is suspected of robbing a Region Two resident in front of the Jones Supermarket at Cotton Field on Monday evening, was found shortly after hiding in a nearby house.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that several residents saw him, allegedly, committing the robbery and gave chase. The man ran into a house and hid.

According to information, the occupants of the house denied any affiliation with the man or that he was “hanging out” there.

Police, who were later called to the scene, found the man locked inside the house.

He was arrested and taken to the Anna Regina Police Station.

He is currently assisting the police with the investigation.

Hururu farmers get seeds, planting material and farming tools AGRICULTURE Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, made good on his promise when he handed over a quantity of farming tools and planting material to farmers from Hururu, Region 10, on Tuesday.

During the simple handing-over exercise, Minister Mustapha said that the tools and planting material will benefit farmers who were badly affected during the recent flooding, a release said.

“I received a request from representatives from the village for planting materials and farming tools.

Five more Guyanese doctors graduate in Cuba FIVE more medical students from Guyana have graduated from the University of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba.

At a colourful graduation ceremony held on July 20, in the Province of Santiago de Cuba, the five received their academic certificates and other commendations with the pledge to return to, and serve, Guyana.

The five are Dr. Shekeila Ramsammy, Dr. Omar Moffett, Dr. Latesha Fordyce, Dr. Ron Chetram and Dr. Rafeena Riyasat.

They were high in praise

of their professors and the University’s Administration for guiding them to success in difficult times.

The Government of Guyana came in for special approbation and the new graduates expressed their gratitude for the opportunity that was given to them to study in Cuba.

They also thanked the Guyana Public Service Ministry for the food packages and increase in monthly stipends which made their studies less difficult.

tribute to the Government of Cuba which, despite the economic difficulties caused by the economic and financial blockade, has been able to provide the wherewithal to transform Guyanese citizens into highly skilled medical doctors.

More investment needed in rural areas, actions to end hunger, poverty

THE Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu has reiterated his call for more investment in rural areas and actions to end hunger and poverty at the Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit.

He made the appeal at one the Pre-Summit’s special events organised

by FAO and Italy “From the G20 Matera Declaration to the Food Systems Summit: A Framework for Emerging Coalitions of Action”, following the same call at the Italy-presided G20 Foreign Affairs and Development Ministers’ meeting last month where -- for the first time -- food security and nutrition were at the centre of the agenda, culminating in the Matera Declaration -a declaration by the G20 Ministers, FAO and other UN agencies and partners to support agri-food systems’ transformation and overcome challenges to end hunger.

“Let me repeat my main message again: We must refocus our energies and investment on rural areas,” said Qu. “Investing in the agriculture sector is the solution to eradicate hunger.”

Qu’s message comes amidst a dramatic worsening of world hunger in 2020, much of it likely related to the fallout of COVID-19. According to a report issued this month

In response, the G20 Matera Declaration provides a path to ending hunger, outlining priorities for the food security and nutrition sectors -- from underscoring the relevance of the One Health approach, empowering women and the youth to adapting agrifood systems to climate change.

The declaration also emphasised the importance of partnerships, and encouraged countries to join the Food Coalition - an Italy-proposed and FAOled initiative that aims to mobilise political, financial and technical support for countries affected by COVID-19.

Marina Sereni, Italy’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation said: “In Matera, the G20 Ministers committed to fostering a global mobilisation, leveraging on other international processes. The

Food Systems Summit, which involves the United Nations and its membership, is one of them. In this wider forum [...], we can intensify our work to get back on track with the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and deliver a world without hunger.”

Sereni highlighted the Matera Declaration’s priorities, and pointed to the Food Coalition as a tool to implement the declaration.

The year of 2021 is a unique year to restate our commitments, urged Qu as it provides ample opportunities, including the current Pre-Summit and the UN Food Systems Summit in September, “to go beyond words, commitments, and planning”, and “move to action: form coalitions and alliances with concrete deliverables”.

In this respect, the UN Food Systems Summit in September needs to be “the beginning of a new era”, stressed the FAO Director-General, with time-bound, inclusive and accountable partnerships.

“Unless we assume responsibility and take urgent actions, we might gather in 2030 to announce

that not only did we not eradicate hunger and poverty but that 660 million people are still hungry,” warned the Director-General as he reiterated FAO’s commitment to lead and co-lead the summit’s coalitions of action related to FAO’s mandate to end hunger and poverty.

Grandmother of four praises ‘Because We Care’ initiative

SHAKEELA Khemraj was lost for words after receiving her share of the ‘Because We Care’ and School Uniform and Supplies cash grants on Monday.

She is among hundreds of parents in Region Three, who have benefitted from the

government’s $19,000 grant.

The mother told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that she is thankful for the assistance, since it would assist her daughter with more than just school supplies.

“She has a heart condi-

tion, so I think it’s a very good thing that the government is doing for us. Because she has to use medication every day. We can use some of the money to buy school stuff and the rest, we can use to get medication, so I am very happy.”

Like Khemraj, several other beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the government.

“It will help me to buy his exercise books to go back to school, plus right now he has a lot of projects in school that he is doing online classes and it will help me with his crayons and so on,” the mother related.

Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, who spearheaded the distribution exercise at the Leonora Primary, and Stewartville and Uitvlugt Secondary schools,

“In Guyana, wider Guyana, we are putting $3.2 billion in this cash grant programme, something that the previous government said was unsustainable, that is what they said.

The minister also took the opportunity to urge parents and teachers to get the COVID-19 vaccine for the safety of their families.

SASOD head lauds STI prevention ‘combo’ pack

THE ‘Double “A” Protection Condoms’ sexual hygiene combination box will go a far way in healing and strengthening HIV combination prevention in Guyana, Managing Director of the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), Joel Simpson, has opined.

He made this comment at the recent launch of the product, which was held at the Sleep Inn Hotel and Casino in Church Street, Georgetown.

According to Simpson, the launch of the combination box which comprises three lubricated latex condoms, one wipe, one lubricant and one disposable pack, serves as a reminder for all Guyanese that HIV is not over.

“Over the last year and some months, we have been grappling with a pandemic that has been a major scourge across the world.

But that has only complicated, and made even more challenging, the HIV response because people don’t stop having sex during a

pandemic,” he highlighted.

“So we are faced with double the challenges, even as the world tries to overcome COVID-19,” Simpson added.

It is for this reason that he contends that the new product will majorly assist in curbing the spread of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

“I think what’s particularly special about this product is the assembly and packaging of multiple commodities in one box, called the combination sex pack…

This is the first time that I’m seeing condoms, lubricant, a wipe, and a disposable pack in one commodity—in one product that’s available in the market. And I think that is quite special, and the convenience of having it all in one pack is going to go a long way in HIV protection, and also in the area of family planning,” he stated.

He added that not only the product, but the accompanying health campaign, is quite fitting when it comes to HIV combination protection, since it touches on all

three tiers of HIV combination prevention.

At the biomedical level, he stated, Guyana is in need of more commodities, like condoms, lubricants and similar products, not only to prevent HIV, but other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

“Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PREP) is probably the best tool that you have available in the 21st century for HIV prevention. And while PREP might be over 90-something per cent effective at preventing HIV, we can’t use PREP alone to prevent STIs. We still need condoms in the prevention of all sexually transmitted infections,” Simpson reinforced.

“At the behavioural level, we know that correct and consistent condom use is a key part of HIV prevention: knowing how to use a condom correctly, using it every time you have sex, is a huge part of a successful strategy; not only in the prevention of HIV, but other STIs, and also in family planning,” he went on to say.

At the structural level, however, lies one of the largest barriers to HIV prevention: stigma as it relates to sex, sexual practices and sexual health.

“So the fact that we have all of these commodities in one convenient package really helps to inhibit that stigma,” Simpson said.

A well-known fact is that within the key population, men in particular are hesitant when going to pharmacies and similar institutions to purchase lubricants, since there is an assumption, even with the host of medical information available, that lubricants are used only when performing anal sex.

While lubricants are used for performing anal sex, it also helps reduce friction that may cause condoms to break, or cause skin in and around the vagina to become irritated and torn, thereby

exposing the area to bacteria that can cause severe infections, not limited to STIs. “So while the assumption is far from reality, or far from the truth, what this product helps to evade, is some of that stigma because you’re going to purchase one combo pack and not necessarily condoms and lubricants, and all of these things separately,” the LGBTQ+ activist said before adding: “So I think this will go a far way in healing and strengthening combination prevention in Guyana.”

Simpson took the opportunity to commend Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, and the National AIDS Programme Secretariat, under the leadership of the new programme manager, Dr Tariq Jagnarine, for their notable contributions since the new government took office.

He also encouraged a closer collaboration and

THE Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has received a quantity of face masks, face shields, drinking water, concrete boards, hand sanitizers, adult pampers and other

items, to assist households affected by severe flooding in some parts of Guyana.

Murder convicts appeal ‘severe’ life sentence TWO men, who were convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Corentyne businessman, Shameer Ali Mursalin, have moved to the Court of Appeal to have their conviction and sentence overturned.

In May, Berbice businessman, Dennis Veerasammy and one of his employees, Basheer Harrinauth, both of Crabwood Creek, Region Six, were convicted of the October 24, 2015, murder of Mursalin by a 12-member jury at the Berbice High Court. Justice Jo-Ann Barlow sentenced the duo to life in prison with the possibility

of parole after 25 years.

In their appeal documents, the convicts claim that the trial judge erred in law. They are contending that the sentence was excessive and too severe. As such, they are asking the court to reserve and/or set aside their conviction and sentence.

According to a police report, Mursalin’s body was discovered by police lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his head at his Grant 1805 Weld Tank Dam, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne home.

At the time, police were investigating a report of threatening language and damage to property and had

gone to the vivtim’s house.

After calling out for him for some time without any response, the police officers ventured into the yard and made the discovery.

It was reported that Mursalin and Veerasammy were ex-business partners but had an argument over a long-standing dispute. Mursalin went to Veerasammy’s home and damaged several windows.

Following the investigation into Mursalin’s murder, Veerasammy and Harrinauth were arrested and had reportedly confessed to the crime under caution.

Flora Duffy claims historic first gold for Bermuda WITH a population of just 63 000, Bermuda became the smallest nation or territory to win an Olympic gold medal at a summer Games when Flora Duffy won the triathlon in Tokyo.

The 33-year-old, making her fourth appearance at an Olympics, came out on top of the 56-woman field with a time of one hour 55 minutes 36 seconds - more than a minute ahead of Great Brit-

ain's Georgia Taylor-Brown and USA's Katie Zaferes.

Bermuda already held the record for being the least populated country to win a summer Olympic medal thanks to a bronze for boxer Clarence Hill in 1976 but now they have their first gold medal winner.

"It's been a heck of a lot of pressure for five years," said Duffy.

"I would never recommend being an Olympic

favourite for five years. Of course it's made it all worth it now.

"I think the whole of Bermuda is going crazy.

That's what makes it so special to me is that, yes, this was my dream, but I also knew it was bigger than me.”

U.S. down China, world champs Serbia beat Japan

The Americans, bronze medallists at Rio in 2016, have won five Olympic medals in the event but never gold. Their 29-27 25-22 2521 victory moved them to the top of Pool B without dropping a set, having beaten Argentina in their opener.

Jordan Thompson, the Americans' 24-year-old opposite hitter who is competing in her first Games, impressed again, top-scoring with 34 points to set a Tokyo 2020 record.

"We wanted to serve tough and stick with a solid block setup. We tried to have a short memory when

we made mistakes or China made a great kill," Thompson, who also made four blocks and hit two aces, said.

"China are a legendary team with some of the best players in the world. They pushed us, they'll be back."

By Daniel Leussink TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) - Australia won their third straight match in the men's hockey tournament at the Tokyo Olympics yesterday after putting five goals past reigning Olympic champions Argentina, while Germany also scored five to overpower Britain.

Belgium's Red Lions brushed aside South Africa, winning 9-4, while the Netherlands beat Canada 4-2, hosts Japan earned their first point of the tournament with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and India defeated Spain 3-0.

Australia's 'Kookaburras' went behind against Argentina in the fourth minute as the match got underway in rainy conditions but had scored four goals by halftime and went on to win 5-2.

"It was a good grind that first five, 10 minutes," said Andrew Charter, Australia's goalkeeper.

"We did concede one but at the same time, we had a couple of opportunities.

This is international hockey - you're not going to go through a game without any opportunities against you."

Australia drew level with

less than a minute to go until the end of the opening quarter when forward Blake Govers scored a penalty corner, confirming his reputation as a penalty corner specialist.

That was followed by three more goals in the second quarter and one after the break, giving Australia - who beat Japan 5-3 and India 7-1 in their first two games - the maximum nine points from three matches.

Taiwan's Kuo wins weightlifting gold, misses out on world record TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -Taiwan's Kuo Hsing-Chun won the gold medal in the women's 59kg weightlifting event at the Olympics yesterday as Canada's Maude Charron secured victory in the women's 64kg category.

Kuo, who broke three Olympic records but fell short of her own world record, dropped to the floor with a bitter smile after failing at a lift of 141 kg in the clean and jerk to beat her best of 140 kg.

"I was competing against myself, and I wanted to break the world record," Kuo told reporters.

"I am very happy that I put all the pieces together now, adding the Olympic gold medal today," she said.

Charron put her two hands on her mouth in joy and embraced her team mate after she succeeded in lifting 131 kg in the clean and jerk.

"The gym in Quebec was closed due to the pandemic and I carried all my stuff, my bars, my plates to my dad's garage and I trained there for the whole year," she told reporters.

Kuo Hsing-Chun broke three Olympic records but fell short of her own world record.

Italy's Giorgia Bordignon took the silver medal and Taiwan's Chen Wen-Huei the bronze.

Chen failed in two attempts to lift 130 kg in the clean and jerk, while Bordignon took a cautious approach to make three successful attempts.

In the 59kg event, Polina Guryeva won silver, Turkmenistan's first medal at the Tokyo Games, and Japan's Mikiko Andoh earned Japan's first weightlifting medal at the

Tokyo Games by claiming bronze.

Andoh burst into tears on the stage after her final attempt at the clean and jerk and was helped up by two coaches.

The Japanese lifter said she injured her knee this month after dropping a barbell in training.

Former England Test bowler Mike Hendrick dies at 72 FORMER England, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire seam bowler Mike Hendrick has died at the age of 72.

Hendrick, who took 87 wickets in 30 Tests between 1974 and 1981, had been suffering from bowel and liver cancer in recent years.

He was part of three Ashes-winning series and appeared in 22 one-day internationals, including the 1979 World Cup final against West Indies.

Hendrick also appeared as an expert summariser on BBC Test Match Special.

Regarded as one of the finest new-ball bowlers of an era in which there was plenty of competition, he took 770 wickets throughout his firstclass career.

Hamilton pledges £20 million to new Mission 44 foundation LONDON, England (Reuters) - Seven times Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton made a personal pledge of £20 million ($28 million) yesterday as he launched a new foundation, Mission 44, supporting under-represented young people in Britain.

The money will support organisations and programmes that narrow the gap in employment and education through partnerships, collaborations, grant giving and advocacy, a statement said.

The Mercedes driver's brand partners and sponsors will also be contributing.

Rukhram stars, as Assassins win Bujan memorial tournament CANADA-BASED Guyanese Avish Rukhram blasted two fours and six sixes in an enterprising 53 as his team Assassins made light work of Challengers, who failed to challenge, to emerge winners of the Damador Daesrath-organised round-arm softball extravaganza, staged last Saturday at Keele Toronto, Canada.

The tournament, which was held in tribute to the late Johnny Bujan, a former stalwart cricket administrator, saw Challengers reach an inadequate 58 for two in the reduced six-over final after being asked to take first strike.

It was then the Rukhram show - Daesrath (five not out) was a mere onlooker - as Assassins won with 10 deliveries to spare as their vocal players and supporters celebrated. Skipper Riaz Kadir was Assassins’ best bowler with two for seven from two overs.

The tournament, which began with 11 teams, started with ten-over affairs but consistent drizzles throughout the day saw the semis reduced to eight and the championship game to six.

Assassins took home $4 000 (Can) and the I&R General Contracting Inc. winners’ trophy while runners-up Challengers received the Dent Wizards silverware.

JACKLOW Crazy XI were crowned champions of the first-ever Pomeroon U-15 cricket competition after a 64-run victory against home team Macaseema Rising Stars in the championship clash on Sunday in the Upper Pomeroon River.

Jacklow, who played the entire competition unbeaten, won the toss and opted to bat first in the T20 affair.

Led by Zandon Rose, who belted 62 runs, Kevin Benjamin who added 30 not out and Adiri Browne with 20, the visitors were able to push their score to 166-3.

Justin Gorge was the pick of the home team’s bowlers with 2-16 from two overs.

In Macaseema’s turn at the crease, they were undone by Rose, who picked up 4-17 from 3.1 overs.

Skipper Harold Demottos took 2-14 from two overs,

while Zadaine Edwards grabbed 2-21 from four overs to ensure a victory in the 15th over.

Renaldo Smith with 25 and Gorge with 16 were the main scorers for the home team, who were bowled out for 102.

Rose’s dominance in the match earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, but it was Demattos’ consistency throughout the competition that resulted in his winning the MVP and Best Batsman awards.

Renaldo Smith finished as the best bowler and Ronaldo Cassiemero as the best fielder.

President of the Pomeroon Cricket Committee, Ernesto Demattos, and his board members ensured that the competition was completed despite several postponements due to heavy rainfall in the region.

Four teams competed in the round-robin battle since early last month.

Kensington Oval pitch ‘unacceptable for international cricket’: Pollard BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – West Indies captain Kieron Pollard has blasted the quality of the Kensington Oval pitch as “unacceptable for international cricket”, following his side’s 2-1 defeat in the three-match One-Day series against Australia.

Not for the first time in the series, West Indies’ batting struggled on a surface where the ball held up and made stroke-play difficult, and were dismissed for an inadequate 152 in the 46th over, leading to a six-wicket defeat.

West Indies were dismissed in last Thursday’s opener for 123 in pursuit of 257, before recovering from a position of 72 for five in the second ODI last Saturday, to overhaul the Aussies’ 187.

“For us it has been challenging. The thing about it is we accept we haven’t batted well throughout this

series, coming from the T20 series where the difference in stroke-play was evident,” Pollard said.

“Coming here to Barbados, both teams sort of struggled on the pitch and I think that’s unacceptable for international cricket.

“We’re not going to make excuses, we accept that we batted badly but I don’t think the scores that we have gotten in this three-match series for two top international teams is acceptable.

“I think that’s (the pitch) very embarrassing for us as a people. Coming from [the pitch for the T20 series in] St Lucia and coming to this, I think it is absolutely ridiculous.”

Kensington Oval was hosting its first international series in 19 months following Ireland’s one-day tour of the Caribbean last year January.

Like most of its Caribbean counterparts, Barbados

has seen government-enforced lockdowns since March last year as part of stringent measures to fight the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, with most sporting activity restricted.

Pollard, who had also raised questions over the pitch following the opening defeat, said the issues were “plain for the world to see”, and ran as deep as the regional domestic tournaments.

“We, as players, sometimes get the brunt of the accusation and all the bad stuff but give the guys the opportunity to come and play on some good cricket wickets. And it goes back even to our regional cricket as well,” Pollard lamented.

“I think as a whole we need to do better and we as individuals need to do better as well so we’re not just going to cast blame, we’re going to accept responsibility as well.

“But I think it’s a holistic approach and a holistic view to go forward.”

International cricket resumed in the Caribbean last March with a multi-format series against Sri Lanka, with the T20 series played at Coolidge Cricket Ground and the One-Day and Test series staged at the Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium also in Antigua.

St Lucia’s Darren Sammy National Stadium hosted the two-Test series against South Africa while Grenada’s National Stadium was the stage for the five-match T20 leg.

Australia and West Indies contested their five-match T20 series in St Lucia earlier this month.

Kensington Oval will see action again today in the opening T20 International of the four-match series against Pakistan, with Guyana hosting the last three games.

GUYANESE Andrew Fowler’s Tokyo Olympics campaign came to an end yesterday, when he failed to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s100m freestyle swimming event.

Fowler placed fourth in Heat 1, clocking 55.23 seconds in the race that was won by Nepal’s Alexander Sah, who swam a time of 53.41 seconds.

Olt Kondirolli of Koso was second (54.33s) while Palestine’s Yas Al Bawwad clocked 54.51 seconds to finish third.

Fowler’s entry time of 54.10 seconds was the fastest of the

seven swimmers entering yesterday’s event.

However, with only the 16 fastest times advancing, the Nepal swimmer’s time was not fast enough to see him move on to the next round.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Aleka Persaud will be in action in the women’s 50m freestyle Heat 4 on Friday July 30, from 06:25hrs.

Persaud’s time of 28.10 seconds is the fastest entry time against the seven other swimmers in the group.
