PRESIDENT David Granger is expected to meet Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II during his April 24-28 visit to the United Kingdom.

The Head-of-State has departed for the trip, a release from the Ministry of the Presidency said.

President Granger will have an audience with the Queen at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

He will also attend the Caribbean Council’s Annual Reception at the House of Lords.

According to the release, the President will deliver an address at that reception, which will be held on Tuesday evening.

also address the forum.

According to the release, the annual reception provides an opportunity for Members of Parliament, peers, high commissioners, ambassadors, members of the UK civil service, non-governmental organisations, members of the Caribbean diaspora and businesses investing in or interested in investing in the Caribbean region to network, with a view to supporting the region’s economic development.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge is accompanying the President on the trip. The team will also meet with members of the UK Government, the British business community and the Guyanese

diaspora in London.

The President’s meeting with the Queen is significant since it marks several years since a Guyanese sitting Head-of-State last met with the Head of the Commonwealth.

Guyana obtained independence from Britain in May 1966.

Over the years, the two countries have collaborated on a number of projects which were funded by the UK. The most recent of such undertakings is the Security Sector Reform Project (SSRP) which the APNU+AFC administration restarted since assuming office in May 2015.

Under former President Bharrat Jagdeo, the previous government in 2009 objected to the SSRP, and reasoned that

Queen Elizabeth II Britain’s requirements would have resulted in the violation of Guyana’s sovereignty.

Britain subsequently abandoned the project.

In 2016, just under a year after assuming the

Presidency, President Granger met with Baroness Joyce Anelay, Minister of State for the Commonwealth and the United Nations (UN) at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron and British High Commissioner to Guyana, Greg Quinn, with the request that consideration be given to restart the programme here.

A UK team subsequently visited the country to perform scoping works to prepare for the arrival of the senior advisor.

The plan would provide for the building of the operational capacity of the Police Force, from the provision of a uniformed response to serious crimes, forensics, crime intelligence and traffic policing to the strengthening of policy-making across the security sector to make it more transparent, effective and better coordinated.

In January this year, British Senior Security Sector Reform Advisor, Russell Combe, who serves as the advisor to the President, under the SSRP, met with Minister of State Joseph Harmon and was assured of Government’s commitment to ensuring the crafting and implementation of the five-year strategic report.

The advisor will produce the report at the end of his one-year placement in Guyana.

Combe is from the Olive Group, which was contracted by Engineering, Design, Construction, Management (AECOM), on behalf of the United Kingdom Government.

Harmon expresses confidence –– to investigate plot to in Police Force shoot President Granger

MINISTER of State Joseph Harmon said Government is confident that the Guyana Police Force will conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged plot to shoot President David Granger, contending that those responsible will be brought to justice.

He was awarded the Dolphin Award of Excellence, the highest award of the club for being a positive role model and outstanding friend of the club.

Fifteen others were recipients of this award, including Social Protection Minister Amna Ally.

Club Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hilbert Foster, praised the sponsors of the event and appealed to Government to look into the sordid state of affairs of cricket in Berbice.

Chef swallows 35 cocaine pellets -- excreted 14 thus far

A CHEF employed by an established fast food outlet was on Sunday morning arrested for trafficking in narcotics at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) just as he was about to board a flight destined for The Bahamas.

The arrest was made at 04:30hrs, police said in a release.

The 26-year-old East Ruimveldt resident, who was on the police radar for sometime now, has admitted to the law enforcement officials that he swallowed 35 cocaine pellets.

This was subsequently confirmed by an x-ray.

The suspect, who is under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital, has so far excreted 14 pellets which amounted to 146 grams.

Gov’t has enhanced inclusivity, accountability – says Nagamootoo

PRIME Minister Moses Nagamootoo believes the APNU+AFC administration has established and enhanced the landscape for inclusivity and accountability in the governance process.

The prime minister, in his ‘My Turn’ column in the Sunday Chronicle, said several measures have been implemented by the Government to ensure transparency while in office.

These include the holding of Local Government Elections, the establishment of several new towns, the passage of anti-money laundering legislation, the establishment of the Public Procurement Commission as well as steps taken towards the implementation of constitutional reform.

In addition, the prime minister noted that the passage of the State Asset Recovery Agency Bill to

secure the peoples’ properties from unlawful appropriation as well as Government’s proactive approach to ensure the protection of Guyana’s sovereignty are among the enhanced steps taken by the Government to aid the governance process.

He said that Guyana was “way down at the bottom “of the corruption perception ladder and has since moved to 108 in 2016 as compared to 136 in 2013.

Corruption, he said,was the country’s largest single human rights violation as monies which were expected to benefit the population were diverted elsewhere.

According to the prime minister, the open ‘incestuous’ relationships which existed between the ruling elite and underground figures in the past have been contained.

He said that while

Tapping into Guyana’s wealth GUYANESE hold the expectation that proceeds from the inevitable oil and gas sector will be to their and the nation’s development. Consequently, any and every news and discussion about this evolving sector would aid better understanding of its challenges and the benefits to be derived. One of the realities that ought not to be lost sight of is that the sector is not the magic bullet to solving all our problems, in spite of the perception that it will create money which will flow like the river.

Since the acknowledged discovery Guyana has had the benefit of experts’ who are au fait with the industry offering their inputs and advice. Notable is the common recognition by all that Guyanese must benefit from the exploitation of their resources. In order to meaningfully benefit from anything, it requires being au fait with the issues and the responsibility involved to make the

product beneficial.

There is no secret this sector brings with it its own brand of politics and greed.

Global experiences could teach us that in this environment politics can be divisive and vicious. Our society, having historically evolved as divided units, continued efforts at forging a polity of One People, One Nation, One Destiny, requires shrewd thinking to avoid such pitfalls.

Given the global thirst and demand for oil and gas, local politics can also become prey to the international dictates of governments and multinationals.

Recognition of global events would see the hands of external forces, in pursuit of their self- interest, creating and capitalising on internal instability. Where Guyana’s resources have been located in the area, Venezuela ill-advisedly makes claim to our sovereignty and the right to benefit from these, not only faces a threat, but could also open avenues for others to

create alignment with our neighbour in pursuit of their self- interest.

Greed (i.e. corruption), local and external, has seen the revenue from this sector not redounding to the benefit of the masses. Government officials and the influential in society are known to collude with multinational oil industries to rob the state, and by extension deprive its people. One prominent case of such blatant existence is that of Equatorial Guinea.

Proceeding with exploiting the sector for the people’s benefit would also require looking at avenues for ensuring that Guyanese possess the skill sets to benefit from employment. This would require understanding the manpower needs and facilitating necessary training to make it possible. An employment policy or law requiring a baseline employment for local workers is also worthy of exploring. Questions as to the direct and indirect benefits of employment and economic

opportunities ought to be pre-eminent.

Another important factor is that of environmental protection. Management--extractive, disposal and clean-up -- has to conform to internationally acceptable standards. Where Guyana, in addition to pursuing a green economy is also a signatory to the United Nations Climate Change Agreement, the extractive sector will be required to operate within said guidelines and it would not be in Guyana’s interest to circumvent such protocols.

Structures such as the Environmental Protection Act, State Asset Recovery Act, Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act, Integrity Commission and proposed Sovereign Wealth Fund, are well situated to ensure proper management of the new sector, along with holding to account those who are participating in managing it. Effective functioning is equally reli-

ant on enforcers being adequately trained and equipped with the requisite resources, along with a strong and independent judiciary.

Our parliamentary system, which is the nation’s highest decision-making forum, also needs strengthening. Recommendations in the Sir Michael Davies’ Report, commissioned during the Bharrat Jagdeo administration, in response to local and international pleas to make the august House more deliberative, are still to be implemented. Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman’s disclosure that the National Assembly will

play a role in determining the future of the industry is welcome news. Similar involvement could also be extended to other stakeholders.

Management of oil and gas revenue can be the 21st century model for uniting Guyanese across political, racial, and other diversity. Environmental crises, political instability and inequities in countries such as Nigeria and Iraq, the emergence of terrorist groups such as ISIS, funded on the seizure of oil wells, and the invasion of Iraq are a few of several lessons to learn from and seek to avoid.

I hold the inflexible belief that such a poisonous and bigoted mind should never be in charge of a school. Aksharananda reminds me of how destroyed a society Guyana is. Here are some of the appallingly egregious opinions of this man and his obnoxiously demagogic sermonising.

He wrote; “Both [Ravi Dev and Ryhaan Shah] of these writers are educational and informative and, above all, honest. The issues that they have raised and continue to speak about are not different from those articulated by people who almost on a daily basis complained about disenfranchisement, marginalization and discrimination perpetuated [sic] by the previous ad-

ministration.”

How can anyone be honest when the previous government held power for 23 years and Ryhaan Shah was nowhere to be seen and when she was seen in those 23 years, her comments were never about the victims of marginalization and discrimination, but about the East Indians of Guyana needing to be on equal par with Africans in the police force and the public service.. If there is anything about Shah and Dev it certainly is not honesty. Dev has never once written even one line calling for equality in the access to resources of Guyana; and that is because he, Shah and Aksharananda himself are content with Indian domination of the economy.

Here is Aksharananda’s nauseating bigotry; “What sense of hope are we supposed to have when

hundreds of Indians were removed from various state offices? Why should we be not concerned about the trend of authoritarianism that is once again raising its head in Guyana?” Make no mistake that when this socalled Swami, this pretender to religion writes about “authoritarianism that is once raising its head again in Guyana,” he means the rule of the PNC from 1964 to 1992. He leaves out the period in Guyanese history that is the worst the British West Indies has ever seen – the reign of the Jagdeo/ Ramotar cabals. It was a period when even in the ugly days of Burnhamism, the state had not reached the level of fascistization that we saw under Jagdeo.

Over 500 African young men between the ages of 18 and 40 were brutally murdered by agents of the state.

People like Aksharanan-

da make me feel angry, livid but sad that Guyana could produce such people who hold sway over young Indian minds. Surely, Guyana should comment on Aksharananda’s excessive bigotry just as this so-called Swami did when the Christian preacher went into Central High School.

This so-called Swami referred to the dismissal of hundreds of East Indians by the present government, but is too indecent to look at the other side of the coin.

Perhaps they got their jobs through the displacement of other persons who held those jobs, but were of a different race.

This so-called holy man used vulgar semantics to describe other people just as Shah does in the Bobby Ramroop newspaper that Ravi Dev is in charge of. But he does not mention this,

because after all, if he does, then his attempt to paint an elegant picture of his fellow tribalists falls down. Maybe he doesn’t read the newspaper Ravi Dev is in charge of, so he would know how deep in the gutter are the people he heaps praise on; but really, you think Aksharananda cares ? I shudder to think what this man tells those young minds at his school when the discussion is one on the leadership of the present government. But it shouldn’t surprise anyone what he would say, after all, people like the so-called Swami would be familiar with the caste system and where Africans sit on the caste ladder

I have long held the belief that some of the most vulgar sociological thoughts come from people who preach religion, and this goes for all denominations. In my life on this earth, some of the most obnoxious people I have encountered and read about are religious people who preach the word of God. I could never bring myself to refer to Juan Edghill as a bishop. Mr Edghill once tried to have me in prison for my journalism.

I could never bring myself to use the word Swami in front of the name of Hindu preacher Aksharananda.

I find Mr Aksharananda’s hypocrisy simply unbearable. I refer to his letter in the Stabroek News of Friday, April 21, 2017, the contents of which I am

A welcome debate

Dear Editor,

THERE were public calls for high-level national conferences to find a national agreement on ways to save and revitalise the sugar industry of Guyana to make it a viable and p ro f i t a b l e i n d u s t r y again, from the growing of sugar canes to the manufacturing of sugar and its by-products.

It is welcome news that the National Assembly will soon engage in a debate on the future of the sugar industry. The nation expects mature and serious encounters in the National Assembly, free of rancour and abuse of each other, and from the partisan blame game for cheap political points. This is a test for all the political parties and members of the Assembly and the Government to debate, and then to confer in good faith in a Select Committee to find common ground on the future of the industry, putting partisan political considerations aside.

Failure to arrive at a national consensus by the National Assembly and the Government would be a source of grave disappointment to all in this country.

The members of the National Assembly must take into consideration the Government’s Commission of Inquiry report into the Guyana Sugar Corporation,(GUYSUCO), October 2015.

They must give serious consideration to the recommendations on the way forward for this vital industry, in particular recommendation (iv), which states “... the COI does not recommend the closure of any estate at this time.”

The National Assembly must take into ac-

count recent studies and the views and positions of various stakeholders and put all on the table in the National Assembly, including the view that the industry has the capacity to increase its production by at least one hundred thousand tonnes (100,000) of sugar annually, which can turn around the industry.

This must be considered among others to find a broad-based national consensus to restore the viability of the sugar industry. Serious consideration must also be given to the contributions of the sugar industry to the national treasury of foreign currencies over the years.

The industry is still a significant foreign-currency earner.

Many knowledgeable and experienced persons on the sugar industry are convinced that the industry can be saved and returned to profitability.

This requires determination and the right decisions from the best practices in the cultivation of sugar canes, to producing sugar and its potential for value-added products, and other revenue-earning ventures flowing from the sugar industry.

The challenge is for the National Assembly and the Government to find common ground on the future of this industry, taking into account the livelihoods of workers and their families, and adjoining communities of sugar estates.

The citizens of this nation are looking to the political leaders to find acceptable solutions to the challenges facing the future of the sugar industry in the interest of all and the national good, Regards, JOSHUA SINGH

By Vanessa Braithwaite RESIDENTS and health practitioners of the Barima-Waini sub-region of Moruca on Saturday were beneficiaries of an informative programme hosted by the Ministry of Public Health in recognition of Vaccination Week in the Americas.

The programme coincided with World Malaria Day 2017 and commenced with a march starting at the Moruca Regional Hospital and ending at the Santa Rosa Secondary School.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Public Health,

including staff from the Vector Control Services Department and the Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) joined doctors, nurses, medical practitioners, regional officials, students and residents in the lively exercise.

Braving the hot sun, participants clad in their theme jerseys, chant “Get vax to celebrate a healthy tomorrow and end Malaria for Good. Let’s boost prevention,” the themes of both celebrations.

Pamphlets and fliers were also distributed to

spectators. At the Santa Rosa Secondary School, a packed programme awaited the participants.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Karen Gordon- Boyle, addressing the gathering said the decision to hold the programme in Moruca is in keeping with the ministry’s aim to improve service and awareness in less highlighted areas.

The goal, she said, is to sensitise residents of outlying areas, especially those close to the porous borders, on the importance of vaccines in preventing vaccine- preventable dis-

He commended the hard-working staff in the sub-region for their inputs and dedication in trying to eradicate vaccine- preventable diseases, but is cognisant that much more is still to be done.

“Our efforts are significant, but our fight is still to continue to realise the grand finale or the success…. our nation’s wealth lies in the health status of our nation,” he said.

Residents received pamphlets and fliers with information on preventing malaria and getting vaccinated.

Malaria tests were also conducted on site.

A close call for Carlos (his story) WHEN I was a child my mother managed a ‘box’ and every week different folks would ‘throw their hand’. I was ten and grew up over the years to know the regular participants who brought their money to our house. Mrs Edwards, Uncle Clarence, Aunty Leila, Mr Fraser etc. And they all knew me.

Sometimes when someone drew their ‘box hand’ they would give me a ‘small piece’ and it was appreciated. Being around ’big people’ was a norm for me;there was always someone coming or going, people cracking jokes and buying me fudge, icicle or ice cream.

Uncle Clarence brought his money over one day when mom was out. I put it away safely, the way mom had taught me but still he just sat there in his usual chair in a jovial mood, chewing gum and smoking a cigarette. I sat nearby watching television. Then Uncle Clarence startled me: He said, “You growing into a nice looking child, how old

are you now, about 14?” I nodded and said thank you. But I felt uneasy as this wasn’t his usual line of conversation and it was an odd compliment for a man to make to a boy. Then I realised Uncle Clarence was looking at me in a weird way.

Then he took out some money, this was nothing strange, I was used to getting a ‘small piece’ from him and other visitors, ‘…

All this is for you’ he said. The wad of money, which was far more than usual, looked enticing. (Which child doesn’t enjoy having pocket money?) He continued, ‘All you have to do is sit here’, he patted his thigh, very close to his crotch. I was stunned and looked at him incredulously. This was the Uncle Clarence I have known for a number of years, a person my mother trusted and allowed into her home, a family friend and neighbour.

Just then the front door opened and mom bustled in, she said to me “Boy help me with this shopping nah?” she was oblivious to the tension in the room. She continued “Eh eh,

Clarence you deh here?” Uncle Clarence rushed over to help before I could get a grip of what was going on. I was in shock. Did what just happen, really happen? Did Uncle Clarence just made a sexual advance towards me, a teenage school boy? It was a strange feeling to know that someone whom I once held in such high regard would approach me in an indecent manner. I wondered how long he was thinking along those lines, could it have been since I was 10, 11, or 12 and if I had sat on his lap, what would he have done next? It’s a good thing that my mother has always been approachable because this was definitely something I needed to share with her, she needed to know exactly what type of friend Uncle Clarence was.

Mom was very angry, she banned Uncle Clarence from coming to our house and made sure the whole neighbourhood and the people in authority were told about the way he tried to bribe me and his attempted molestation (sexual abuse).

I realised that this is how sex abuse starts for some children: a trusted uncle, a family friend, a seemingly sincere person whom you’ve known for years, beguiles, grooms or lures a child into their sexual snare. Although this account is at the milder end of the scale when it comes to child sexual abuse, it is just as relevant because the intention was still a criminal act towards a child. Now that I’ve shared my story I hope that any child, girl or boy, whom an adult makes sexual advances to, will be brave enough to tell their parents or caregiver like I did; and that parents and caregivers will teach children that at the first sign of anything inappropriate they must take measures to defend themselves and they must never be afraid to speak out.

A united Guyana –– New Testament Church of God pledges at Diamond Anniversary

Church of God (NTCOG) were honoured as part of a series of activities held to celebrate its Diamond Anniversary.

However, in 1956, the Church of God was named New Testament in Trinidad and Tobago.

It was in that same year that the first New Testament Church of God was established in Guyana. By 1957, the Pentecostal Church was fully structured.

On Saturday, God’s Battalion NTCOG was presented with the top award during a prestigious award ceremony at

World Mission Director Dr. David Griffis presenting Bishop Clemsford Craig with an award in recognition of God’s Battalion NTCOG’s outstanding numerical growth in 2016 the Ramada Princess Hotel in Georgetown.

Bishop Clemsford Craig received the award in recognition of the church’s outstanding numerical growth in 2016. It was presented by Dr. David Griffis – the sitting World Mission Director. This is the first time in history that a sitting World Mission Director has visited Guyana.

The award for the Highest Financial Contribution to the National Office was presented to Harvestime NTCOG. Mellissa Hinds received the award on behalf of the Pastor and Administrative Bishop, Joseph Persaud.

The third top award was presented to De Hoop NTCOG for its Highest Financial Contribution towards the Mission. That award was received by Bishop Balgobin Mohabir. Other awards were presented to churches for consistent reporting, the highest number of baptism and unwavering support to hinterland missions.

On Sunday, the curtains came down on the five days of celebration with words from Dr. Griffis. The World Mission Director has identified Georgetown, Guyana to be one of the 10 Cities of Lights.

The FINISH Project – Focus, Invade, Navigate, Intercede, Send and Heal -- is a training mission dubbed by the World Mission Director as the City of Lights.

“It’s amazing because of all the exciting things that are happening in Guyana and the prophecies that have been made over Guyana.

He has chosen Georgetown above many, many hundreds of cities,” Bishop Joseph Persaud told Guyana Chronicle.

FREE OF RACISM With the project on stream, Bishop Persaud is trusting God for a truly united Guyana, free of racism.

“My prayer is that with the help of God and with the help of the church that we will bridge that racial gap and bring people

together.”

Meanwhile, the celebration, which commenced last Wednesday was one filled with dynamic preaching, worship and praise with thousands of Guyanese in attendance at the National Cultural Centre.

Bishop Persaud said that while New Testament Church of God has celebrated 60 years of existence in Guyana, it was birthed out of a revival which had taken place in the southern part of the United States of America more than 120 years ago.

The revival had led to the birth of the Church of God – a Pentecostal Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, which was founded

by Elder Richard Spurling and a group of eight Baptist believers.

“Pentecostals are those who are serving God, believe in the Baptism with the Holy Ghost, believe that God still works miracles.

Pentecostals are known by their vibrant worship, vibrant Pentecostal worship which includes an exuberant display of joy, music, singing, and dynamic preaching,” Bishop Persaud explained.

The revival had spread to the Caribbean. According to the Administrative Bishop, after

To mark its rich history and tremendous success in spreading the word of God, the Diamond celebration was observed in grand style with powerful messages from the field director of the Caribbean, Bishop Ishamael Charles and other Christian leaders.

In addition to the convention, a medical team will today wrap up medical outreach at the St. Cuthbert’s Mission.

The team also visited residents on the West Bank of Demerara at the Harvest Time Church at Pouderoyen and at the Livingstone New Testament Church of God at South Ruimveldt Gardens.

Align age of consent with access to sexual health services

THE Meeting of Caribbean Youth Leaders on sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS has concluded with participants advocating a review of the age of consent not being aligned with the age when most young people are allowed to access sexual and reproductive health services.

This objective echoed sentiments by St Vincent and the Grenadines, Health, Wellness and the Environment and Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) Chair Robert Browne, who delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Friday, April 21.

“The disparity between the age of consent and access to sexual health services is a shame,” Browne said during his address.

He added: “As young people, we must challenge policymakers to review this, since it has a direct impact on young people contracting HIV and AIDS.” During a group activity to create a framework for Youth Advocacy on Sexual and Reproductive Health, youth leaders said that they were concerned that most young people are allowed to engage in sexual activity before they can legally access sexual and reproductive health services.

According to Raymoniya Lawrence, a representative of The Caribbean Forum for Liberation and Acceptance of Genders and Sexualities (CariFLAGS), “It is unacceptable that a young man or woman can legally engage in sexual activity, but not allowed to access critical sexual health services. This has a direct impact on preventing new HIV infections. We need our policymakers to join the conversation on this issue.”

Youth leaders further agreed to explore opportunities to engage policymakers within their home countries and committed to utilising their advocacy platforms and organisations to further the agenda for a change to the age of consent and accessing sexual health services.

Participants also voiced concerns about the lack of comprehensive sexual education programmes in Caribbean schools.

CONVERSATION In creating a framework for action, youth leaders proposed that policymakers join in a conversation on the creation of sexual education programmes for schools across the Region as a tool to educate youth about sexual health issues and HIV and AIDS.

the support of PANCAP in helping the participants to take their concerns to the highest level.

Funded by the Global Fund and PAHO, the meeting forms part of a wider intervention programme created by PANCAP for youth advocacy.

Youth advocacy training, facilitating youth leaders’ participation in high-level meetings to influence policy decisions affecting youth and the development of a regional

youth advocacy network, are other interventions slated for implementation.

The overarching aim is to create a well-informed youth advocacy body that can advance the concerns of young people on sexual and reproductive health services and HIV/AIDS. PANCAP is a Caribbean regional partnership of governments, regional civil society organisations, regional institutions and organisations, bilateral and

multilateral agencies and contributing donor partners, which was established on February 14, 2001.

PANCAP provides a structured and unified approach to the Caribbean’s response to the HIV epidemic, coordinates the response through the Caribbean Regional Strategic Framework on HIV and AIDS to maximise efficient use of resources and increase impact, mobilise resources and build capacity of partners.

Motorcyclist dies in Nismes accident CORWIN Anderson, 29, succumbed at the West Demerara Regional Hospital Sunday afternoon from injuries he sustained in an accident at Nismes, West Bank Demerara (WBD), earlier in the morning.

According to his relatives, Anderson was riding along the Nismes Public Road when a motorcar at-

tempted to overtake another, and ended up in his path.

Jaguars crowned PCL four-day champions despite losing final match

THE Guyana Jaguars plummeted in dramatic fashion to a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes inside three days in the final match of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day game at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence yesterday.

However, Sunday’s defeat did not stop the Jaguars from being crowned Regional four-day champions for a third straight year.

A complete bowling effort from the Hurricanes led to the demolition as the Jaguars were all out for 143 in their second innings.

Faced with a first innings deficit of 119, only a handful of the Jaguars batsmen got starts, but no one carried on – Chanderpaul Hemraj’s 29 was the top score, while Keemo Paul (26), Anthony Bramble (23) and Veerasammy Permaul (20), were the other batsmen with any meaningful contributions.

Pacer Gavin Tonge bagged 3-33, while off-spinner Rakheem Cornwall (368), Jeremiah Louis (2-16) and debutant left-arm spinner Elvin Berridge (1-12), completed the destruction mid-way through the final session. Cornwall was adjudged man-of-the-match after ending with match figures of 9-136.

Bravo ruled out of IPL GUJARAT Lions’ Dwayne Bravo has confirmed he will play no part in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

Arsenal beat City to reach FA Cup final with Chelsea

LONDON, (Reuters)-Arsenal will play London rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 27 after beating Manchester City 2-1 following extra time in the semi-final at Wembley on Sunday.

Arsenal had to come from behind after Sergio Aguero scored his 30th goal of the season for City in the 62nd minute, racing on to a pass from Yaya Toure.

Kenyans sweep London Marathon MARY Keitany of Kenya broke Paula Radcliffe’s women’s-only world record to win the London Marathon.

ahead of Seon Burry (26.30 seconds) and Calvin Thomas (26.32 seconds) to win the open category.

Gardner ran 28.55 seconds, beating out Jardine Joseph (29.26 seconds) and Alexi Prashad (31.15 seconds).

Beyoncé Bepeazer was the youngest female to cross the line while nine-year-old Justin Prize was the youngest male.

Pacesetters’ Nathan Saul (29.03 seconds) was the first basketball player to make it across the finish line while Stephen Peters (38.25 seconds) was second.

Gabriel gives Windies hope on landmark day for Younis YOUNIS Khan became the first Pakistan batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs on Sunday, before Shannon Gabriel’s double strike gave West Indies a much-needed lift at Sabina Park.

Pakistan ended day three of the first Test on 201-4 in reply to 286 all out, the bulk of their runs coming in a dogged third-wicket stand of 131 between Younis (58) and Babar Azam (72).

West Indies were ultimately grateful to Gabriel (2-37), who ousted both set batsmen in successive overs just when Misbah-ul-Haq’s side were threatening to carve out a position of dominance.

Thompson anchors Jamaica to 4x200 gold

‘We can run in the top five’ … Jeffrey cites impressive Radical pace at Donington

Elaine Thompson With a slight change in the order of the runners, Elaine Thompson anchored Jamaica to what was an easy win in the 4x200-metre final at the IAAF/BTC World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas.

Running out of lane 6, the Jamaicans were given a flying start from Jura Levy, who put the team in front, a lead that would never be relinquished.

Shericka Jackson’s second leg was also very impressive, the tall powerfully built 400-metre runner outclassing her opponents, before Sashalee Forbes’ leg proved there would be no contest.

Thompson’s anchor was nothing more than a stretch

of her legs, the fastest woman in the world over 200 metres facing no challenge except for the clock.

She beat that clock too, the race ending in a World Relays record, 1:29.04.

The United States, who were expected to challenge the Jamaicans, were beaten into third by a dangerous looking German team, finishing in 1:30.68 seconds.

The United States team stopped the clock in 1:30.87.

Trinidad and Tobago finished just outside of the medals, though a long way back in 1:32.63, while the other Caribbean team in the finals, the British Virgin Islands were seventh in 1:35.35.

Kristian Jeffrey in action for the Radical Works Team at Donington park this weekend

By Stephan Sookram GUYANESE motorcar racer Kristian Jeffrey opened his European career with mixed fortunes as the first of his multi leg Radical Tour concluded at Donington Park in England yesterday but was in impressive form.

Speaking exclusively to Chronicle sport, the Guyanese, who signed a contract with the Radical Works team earlier this year,said that, “Our race pace was very impressive, we

showed that we can run in the top 5.”

After a rousing bit of practice, the Guyanese qualified 11h in race one of the 33 grid event before driving his way to finish in the top 10;placing Seventh.

Race two saw him start badly but managed to finish just outside the top 10, in 11th, but that hadn’t dampened his always enthusiastic outlook.

in the final race before an unavoidable incident ahead of him almost ended his day.

He was however able to recover to finish 17th when the chequered flag dropped.

“Race 3, we did some changes to the car, which I felt a lot more comfortable with. The team got the car handling to where I wanted;I clocked the 3rd fastest time.”

According to the second generation racer, “I’m waiting for the results, but we should be in the top 10 for

points after the first round.

Our next round is at Spa in Belgium,”he added.

“It was the first time racing the car which I acquired after the only person to drive was Lewis Hamilton. So after the weekend’s shakedown, I’m looking forward to a better result at the next round,” Jeffrey stated.

“I’m proud to be a part of a great team, ‘Radical Works Team’, and hopefully we can keep putting Guyana on the map,” he concluded.
