20.2 million barrels of oil produced during first half of 2021

DURING the first half of this year alone, Guyana produced some 20.2 million barrels of oil, which represents an increase of 65.4 per cent from the corresponding period last year.

This was outlined in the half-year report recently released by the Bank of Guyana.

The report said that the “petroleum and gas and support services industry expanded by 32.3 per cent,” and that the monthly average output per day ranged from as low as 84,026 barrels, which was largely due to the malfunction of a gas compressor on the Liza Destiny Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), and surpassed capacity at over

124,941 barrels during the review period.

Further, the report said that this performance averaged 4.1 per cent higher than the 120,000 barrels per day target during the first quarter, but was 30.0 per cent lower in the second quarter.

The petroleum and gas industry also saw an increase in oil prices from higher net demand, as major oilproducing countries limit supply to world markets, while demand increased from the lifting of COVID restrictions in developed countries. “This move is intended to help oil prices recover after the drastic decline one year earlier,” the report noted.

Best-performing Guyanese law student admitted to the bar

IT is often said that anything is possible with hard work and determination, and this was proven by Caressa Henry when she was admitted to the local bar on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old mother of three was admitted to the bar by Acting Chief Justice, Roxane George at the Demerara High Court.

Her petition was presented by attorney-at-law Sandra Bart, a former State Solicitor and lecturer at the University of Guyana.

Her work experience include a stint at the Supreme Court of Judicature as a clerk; the Ministry of Health as a Confidential Secretary; the Attorney General’s Chambers as Personal Assistant to the Solicitor General and the NGO National Coordinating Coalition as Policy/Advocacy Officer; Technical Officer and, Policy and Projects Development Manager.

Henry attended St John’s College and St Stanislaus College followed by the University of Guyana where she pursued a Diploma in Administrative Professional Studies, Public Management and then her Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB.) After completing her LLB, Henry attended the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) in Trinidad and was awarded her Legal Education Certificate (LEC) during September 2021.

She was successful in attaining eight As during her two years of study. She was granted a Government of Guyana scholarship for year two.

During her studies at the HWLS, Henry was the Welfare Officer of the Guyana Jurisdiction Committee, and a member of the HWLS Welfare Committee which advocated and supported students’ welfare.

Henry has been a volunteer peer educator for over 15 years, educating youths on HIV/AIDS and other health and social issues. She also serves as a volunteer with the Civil Defence Commission from 2020 to present.

With her love for the law and volunteering, there is no doubt why Henry won this year’s Guyana Government prize for the best performance by a student from Guyana

and a deserving spot on the HWLS Principal’s Roll of Honour.

Henry is an impeccable young woman, who is a wife, a mother and now an attorney.

During an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Henry said that her “dream job” was to become a lawyer.

“I ignored my dream for sometime and ended up pursuing management. However, it was inevitable that I would end up finally pursuing my dream,” she said.

Henry said that in 2007, she started working at the Supreme Court of Judicature and it was from there her love for law was further ignited.

“The journey for me was definitely not an easy one.

While this may sound similar to many of the stories you hear of law students, I had the task of balancing family life as I am a mother of three and married, as well as working a full time job while I was pursuing my LLB,” Henry said.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES The young attorney explained that her biggest challenge was leaving my children and venturing to another country to study.

“This was hard for me as my eldest was preparing to write the NGSA. But thanks to the support of my husband, mother and other family members who ensured they were taken care of even in my absence,” she added.

She explained that balancing her studies and her family life was overwhelming at times, but like every other challenge in her life, she overcame it.

“It was not easy, as at times I had to focus on my studies in order to pass my exams. The balance meant I had to schedule everything including family time. It was challenging. At times it was overwhelming but with a good support system I was able to manage,” the new attorney added.

When asked how it felt being on the Pincipal’s Roll of Honour and the best performing student from Guyana, Henry modestly said “ It is surreal. When I got the news I was very much surprised. I knew I worked hard but I didn’t expect those accolades. But it is an honour and I am truly humbled by the reward of my hard work, especially being one of the few

mature students in the class.”

Noting that most of the law students were under 25 years, Henry said she worked harder to keep up and be better among the intelligent bunch while also being a mentor to some.

According to Henry, one of the biggest lessons that she learnt during her journey was that adaptability is key to success.

“The COVID-19 pandemic reminded me of the importance of adaptability. During this unprecedented time, I believe that my success was considerably dependent on my ability to adapt. The more adaptable you are, the better you will be able to respond to change and the greater your ability to thrive or succeed in life,” she said.

According to Henry, one motto she lives by is that she

believes that the temptation to give up is a common one, and nobody is exempt.

“Failure isn’t something many of us can handle gracefully. But failure is not fatal.

It is the courage to continue and the perseverance to win that counts. In the words of Henry Ford, ‘Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently’,” she added.

The newly-admitted attorney said for now she will be practicing general law so that she can have a “rounded wealth of experience” but did disclose to this newspaper that she intends to specialise in a particular area of law.

For now, Henry said she will be working with the State and would like to pursue a Master of Laws.

Early pension book distribution to reduce frustration of old-age pensioners

THE early distribution of the 2022 old-age pension books by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is geared at reducing the frustration of Guyana’s senior citizens, Minister, Dr. Vindhya Persaud said.

The government commenced the distribution of the pension books earlier this month, months before the customary end of year.

The distribution has allowed citizens, 65 years and older, to secure their books, reducing the hassle many endure at the end of each year.

On Wednesday, Minister Persaud said that this is the first time the government is

moving in this direction.

“When I got into the ministry, one thing that struck me was the time that it took for pensioners to get their books for the forthcoming year. In fact, it always seems to be very difficult for them and they were frustrated so this year, I wanted it to be very different for them to have a better experience,” Dr. Persaud said during an interview on Radio Essequibo 95.5.

The Human Services Minister said a lot of work was put into ensuring the pensioners receive their 2022 booklets early. She said most of the regions have already been completed.

“So, I think the pensioners are armed and ready with their 2022 pension booklet in due time,” she stated.

Along with the distribution of the pension book-

lets, some 65,000 old-age pensioners have also been benefitting from the government’s $25,000 one-off cash grant.

The ministry has placed distribution centres in convenient areas, allowing pensioners to cash their vouchers at post offices or money transfer agencies such as MoneyGram, and Western Union.

Additionally, a countrywide registration exercise was conducted to ensure public assistance recipients and persons living with disabilities benefit from the government’s $25,000 oneoff cash grant initiative.

The ministry will be conducting a similar exercise from November 1-4 to ensure all vulnerable citizens benefit.

The minister also introduced the ‘shut-in’ programme for old-age pen-

sioners who have difficulties visiting nearby distribution outlets. The initiative will see officers distributing pensions every afternoon during the week.

“What we also did was to expand the shut-in numbers. Late last year, we started the shut-in delivery, so which means if people are bedridden or for some reason it is difficult for them to get their pension, maybe they are visually impaired, something is not okay with them, they are very ill, you can encourage them to sign up for the shut-in distribution system.”

Pensioners also have the option of surrendering their booklets and signing up for the banking system and have their pension deposited into their accounts within the first five days of every month. (DPI)

Pupil with cerebral palsy performs well at NGSA

By Tamica Garnett ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Suhanna Singh may be a special needs child but over the years her parents, Kavita and Ajay Singh, have tried their best to give her as normal a life as possible, and show the world that she can be just as competent as any other child.

This is why her family is overjoyed that she was able to write her National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and gain a place at a secondary school despite having cerebral palsy.

Hailing from the community of Columbia in Mahaicony, Suhanna was one of eight pupils who wrote the secondary school placement exam at the Carlton Hall Primary School. She was able to gain a total of 408 marks and earned a place at the Mahaicony Secondary.

“I felt that she did exceptionally well given her challenges and I am so happy for her,” commented her father, Ajay.

Though she can be a bit shy sometimes, Suhanna’s parents described her as a bubbly child who loves to read, play with puzzles, go on drives and referee basketball games between her little brother and her dad. She is the first of three siblings.

She developed the condition as a result of being born prematurely.

“She was born at 26 weeks of gestational age, so she was not fully developed and had a host of difficulties,” her mother Kavita shared.

“She is a Grade Three cerebral palsy, according to the grading of cerebral palsy, meaning she is still able to have some level of functioning. Our aim is to get her to at least a level two for her to be fully independent,” she further explained.

Cerebral palsy is a disorder that affects movement and muscle tone or posture. It’s caused by damage that occurs to the immature brain as it develops, most often before birth. People with cerebral palsy can have problems swallowing and commonly have eye muscle imbalance. They also might

have reduced range of motion in various joints of their bodies due to muscle stiffness. Some people show normal or near-normal intellectual capabilities.

But being born different has never deterred Kavita and her husband from wanting the best for their first born child or seeing that she has a lot of potential.

“I knew that if we push her and demand from her, she can lead a normal life.

Early on in life we knew she was smart. She would always teach herself. She could read; it was just that she couldn’t write.

We made it our goal to ensure we do as much as we can so that she can have the best life she can have with her condition,” Kavita said.

But as is the case with children with special needs, things were not always easy. And for Suhanna and her family that was particularly the case when it came to her education. It was easier for the family in the earlier years but would become much more difficult as Suhanna advanced through primary school.

“We had gotten her enrolled at a play group.

That was our first kind of encouragement. It was totally accommodating. The owner and teachers of the school loved her so much.

They would come to pick her up [and] take her back home. Everything was good and then came the time to go to primary school,” Kavita explained.

Due to the need for Suhanna to develop her writing skills, she remained in nursery school for a few extra years before she entered primary school at the Grade Three level.

However, the family said it was an uphill task getting teachers to understand that Suhanna could be just as normal as other students in her class.

“When she went into Grade Three that was where there was this mentality where people treated her differently. We started being proactive and would pop in unexpectedly at school. One

day we dropped in and stood outside of her classroom looking at what was happening. We saw all the other children had a reading book and were doing reading but she was never given a reading book and mind you she is a fluent reader. We started asking her things and she said that is how it is every day. We started becoming very worried,” Kavita shared.

She also noted that Suhanna would also start coming home with injuries from school, which led to the special needs department of the Ministry of Education (MoE) in the region getting involved.

But never giving up on wanting a normal life for their daughter, and wanting her to have an education, when the pandemic began and school closed to face-to-face learning, the parents eventually began to home school their daughter.

“We never saw her as an inferior person nor would we ever,” Kavita said.

“We just let her have her normal life and take time off to talk to her. And She knows it’s not a choice she has to continue her education.”

Given all the challenges they have had to face over the years to be able to still

see Suhanna perform at her NGSA examinations was a proud moment for the family.

“Whatever she did, I’m happy because she made the effort,” Kavita said.

Sustainable energy transition a necessity for Caribbean development -CDB President

THE President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Dr Gene Leon, has

cited the transition to sustainable energy as a critical imperative for regional development.

“Our development in the region must be seen from a holistic perspective and, perhaps more than anywhere else in the world, a sustainable energy transition is one of our most important trans-generational obligations,” said Dr Leon at the Turks and Caicos Energy Forum in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, on Thursday.

Although alternative forms of energy, especially solar, wind, and ocean resources are in unlimited supply in the region, the Caribbean is one of the most energy import-dependent regions in the world with CDB’s 19 Borrowing Member States, deriving more than 90 per cent of their commercial energy supply from imported petroleum, a release said. At the same time, the price of electricity in the region is among the highest in the world, averaging US$0.28 per kilowatt hour in 2019.

The high cost for electricity generation has a negative impact on the region’s economic and social development as it increases import bills, worsens terms of trade, erodes competitiveness, and stymies investment by the business community. High electricity

CDB President, Dr Gene Leon costs also affect economically disadvantaged people who spend a greater share of their disposable income on energy.

To make the transition to sustainable energy a reality, the CDB President laid out five priorities for the way forward, which are improving energy efficiency, diversifying energy sources, incentivising the private sector, investing in strategic partnerships, and using innovative, flexible, and affordable financing instruments.

For most countries, Dr Leon highlighted, a priority is to eliminate waste and losses in energy usage even with petroleum as the current fuel source. Therefore, proven technology needs to be upgraded and adapted while implementing relevant performance standards, regulatory instruments, and appropriate incentives and disincentives could entrench and bolster the much-needed shift towards more energy efficient approaches.

Citing a study by CDB and the Inter-American Development Bank, which established that renewable energy could generate 50 to 100 times peak domestic electricity demand, the CDB President emphasised that the region needs to diversify its energy sources. In the Eastern Caribbean, the geothermal energy resource potential far exceeds domestic demand. There are also emerging opportunities for using renewable energy to produce ammonia and green hydrogen, which could be a key fuel of the future.

Dr Leon called for encouraging and incentivising the private sector to support the transition to sustainable energy. “With limited fiscal space available to governments, the private sector must play a leading role in driving this transition. There is more than enough room for households, small pri-

vate investors, private utility companies, and large private independent power producers to invest in various sustainable energy transition projects with an expectation of reasonable returns while simultaneously supporting common sustainability goals,” CDB’s head said.

The CDB President urged governments to facilitate the participation of the private sector through appropriate enabling frameworks that are inclusive, supportive, and consultative.

Noting that strategic partnerships and financing instruments are essential for the transition, Dr Leon said, “Financing this transition will require resources and we have to devise innovative and flexible financing arrangements while adopting appropriate regulatory frameworks to crowd in investments from our private sector and leverage relevant technical and financial resources from our strategic partnerships”.

Such financing options could include public-private partnerships, feed-in-tariffs, as well as renewable energy auctions. There is also a role for private equity capital for larger investments, innovative instruments, such as the energy service companies model, and on-bill instruments that target micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and households.

Dr Leon underscored that CDB is well placed to leverage partnerships to access relevant technical and financial resources to support energy transition. The bank also stands ready to provide technical assistance in the form of advisory support for the establishment of publicprivate partnership policy and regulatory frameworks, as well as relevant capacity strengthening, the CDB President concluded.

More vaccines being accepted for travel to Guyana

HEALTH Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, said persons travelling to Guyana are allowed to enter if they are immunised with other vaccines than those previously stated.

In addition to the US FDA and World Health Organisation (WHO) approved Sinovac, Sinopharm, Johnson and Johnson, Pfizer, Moderna and Astra Zeneca vaccines, Guyana is also accepting persons vaccinated with shots not

yet approved by the international health bodies.

“In addition to WHO approved vaccines, we are accepting persons who have Sputnik, there are persons who have been travelling in from Cuba, they have the Soberana vaccine and we have been accepting those as well, and there are some other vaccines that will be coming on stream so, so if persons have them and they need to travel, they just need to seek guidance

and we’ll be able to clear that,” Dr Anthony said during his COVID update, Thursday.

The WHO is yet to approve several vaccines including the Russian made Sputnik V, which has been approved in over 70 countries worldwide. The WHO said Wednesday that it is still assessing the vaccine for emergency use.

prevents hospitalisation and death, a negative PCR will still have to be shown before entry.

“If we know that vaccinated persons can still be infected and potentially carry the virus, it would mean that we still have to do testing so that is the policy, that’s what we have been doing and that is what a lot of countries around the world have been doing, so you get your PCR test, you also produce your

vaccination record, in the case of Guyana, once you have at least the first dose of the vaccine, we accept you,” Dr. Anthony said.

He reminded that children under two years do not require a negative PCR test to travel to Guyana.

He said different jurisdictions have different requirements. “Generally, most countries would accept the PCR, in the case of the United States, they accept both PCR and antigen

test, but generally all other countries generally would ask for PCR test.”

With regards to vaccination requirements for domestic travel, Minister Anthony noted that government’s policy remains that once a person is in a public space, they need to produce their vaccination card and the airport is considered a public space.

NGSA top performer urges 2022 NGSA pupils to set aside leisure time

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Tajhol Rambarran, who gained 512 marks at the 2021 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and earned a place at Queen’s College, is advising those preparing to experience the assessment next year, to ensure they always put aside time for themselves, notwithstanding the demands of studying.

India administers over one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines

THE Government of India, on Thursday, achieved the milestone of administering one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines. The world’s largest vaccination drive has been carried out by India and has achieved this milestone with support from country’s scientific community and health professionals, a release from the Indian Embassy in Georgetown said.

In a historic achievement, the cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has surpassed the one billion milestone.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi congratulated his countrymen and expressed gratitude to the country’s scientific community, health professionals and frontline workers for working towards achieving this stupendous feat.

The release noted that India has achieved the mark of one billion vaccine doses in less than 40 weeks and is the only country that has developed multiple COVID-19 vaccines across multiple platforms. Nearly all of the one billion doses administered have been Made-in-India.

By the end of 2021, India would be producing more COVID-19 vaccines, monthly. This would translate to a larger potential to share vaccines with the world, contributing towards realisation of the Prime Minister’s vision of “One Earth, One Health,” the Indian Embassy in Georgetown said.

“This achievement makes it all the more important for India when the country is celebrating its 75th Independence anniversary’ India@75’ from March 2021 to August 2023 as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. With low daily infection rates and increasing vaccinations, there is an expectation that travel to and from India will be restored to pre-coronavirus pandemic levels. In this context, India has commenced issuing e-tourist visas to tourists, including free visas to applicants. India is working closely with the international community to enhance bilateral relations, business linkages, cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges,” the release concluded.

Bee removal services extended to residential spaces THE Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), an agency under the umbrella of the Ministry of Agriculture, will soon extend bee removal services to what are considered residential spaces.

This was disclosed by Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday, after requests were made to the ministry for this service to be extended to persons who have issues with wild swarms in their homes.

“GLDA has always been responsible for removing bees from public spaces and buildings such as churches, parks, schools, and so on. In terms of removing bees from residential areas, we’ve been collaborating with the Guyana Apiculture Society to assist with this service because the association would have members in all 10 administrative regions who can handle these reports quickly and effectively. Many persons have been making requests for us to assist with extending this service to residential spaces and we are now working to facilitate this.

As a government, we want to ensure all of our citizens are safe and have access to all of our services. This is another incentive that the government is offering to the citizens of this country in a bid to ensure quality services are extended while making sure they are safe,” Minister Mustapha said.

This month, four persons died from bee attacks.

Minister Mustapha also disclosed that the GLDA has also been tasked with developing a comprehensive plan of action to facilitate those requests and also to determine how the captured bees can be used to expand the agency’s apiary, as Guyana plans to expand its honey production sector, a Ministry of Agriculture release said.

It is apposite to note that this is the second honey flow season for the year.

which contribute to their presence near humans and livestock. Closed and uninhibited buildings, abandoned vehicles, unused agriculture implements, discarded refrigerators, old paint pots, areas overrun with bush, etc. are all havens for the bees. Thus, a multi-stakeholder approach to make the environment safe for residents and livestock will have to be consistently and aggressively undertaken.

CONTINUING TO SUPPORT POTENTIAL BEEKEEPERS Minister Mustapha also said that the ministry will continue to donate hives to Amerindian communities

and persons interested in getting involved in apiculture. He said that GLDA will be working with the Guyana Apiculture Society on a number of apiary management and production initiatives.

“When the GLDA captures bees, it usually donates some of those hives to Amerindian communities or persons who want to get involved in beekeeping. We have an apiary and we are working to expand that facility. Authentic and quality honey production is also something that the government is working aggressively to promote across the country. We’ve been

working with the Guyana Apiculture Society to sensitise persons on how to tell the difference between pure honey and honey that is adulterated. Sometimes persons go to the supermarkets and buy local honey and it is not pure honey. Mixing honey is not something that we want to encourage because it can affect Guyana’s ability to export honey across the region. Now that we are working to tap into more markets and reduce our food import bill, we have to look at all of these things. During the month of October, GLDA will be working with the society to promote this,” Minister Mustapha said.

The term “adulterated honey” means any honey (made from the nectar of floral exudations of plants gathered and stored in the comb by honey bees), to which has been added honeydew, glucose, dextrose, molasses, sugar, sugar syrup, invert sugar, or any other similar product or products.

Annually, Guyana produces approximately 2,000 tonnes of honey.

The GLDA also issued

an advisory, advising persons on what to do should they encounter a wild swarm of bees. Persons are advised not to disturb hives as that may result in the bees launching an attack. Persons are also advised to refrain from making loud noises or make attempts to dislodge or destroy the bees if they notice a swarm nearby. Persons are asked to contact the GLDA on 220-6556-7 for assistance with bee removal.

Additionally, the GLDA will, over a period of time, implement its strategic action plan which involves ramping up its surveillance efforts as well as commence a bee awareness campaign in the short term, work with regional authorities to allocate funds for bee capturing and relocation activities in the medium term, and continue with the training of staff, building capacity amongst beekeepers through workshops and seminars in all 10 administrative regions and mapping locations where wild swarms were located or bee removal was done in the long term.

‘Anxious and excited’ -Daniela Araujo recalls her Dubai performance

WHEN the Guyana Chronicle first interviewed 20-year-old Daniela Araujo in 2020, she had just launched her career as a spoken word artist and her aim was to leave her “footprints in the sand” and just grow into the best version of herself.

Exactly one year later, Daniel has begun to see these goals manifest, especially after she was selected to represent her country at the recent ‘Guyana Day’ celebrations in Dubai – one of the most iconic countries in the world.

Flooded with emotions of excitement and gratitude for the remarkable opportunity, Daniela says she cannot wait to see what else the future has in store. She recalled that at the beginning of her career, an opportunity this big was nowhere in sight.

“Poetry is not something that people pay a lot of attention to; it’s not like music. I never thought that it would have gotten me to where it has, but I am grateful. It was my first time performing on an international stage,” a candid Daniela told the Buzz on Thursday.

Describing her experience in sheer delight, she said: “I was excited, anxious, and nervous.

Daniela’s career has definitely been positively impacted by the experience and she is using the opportunity to encourage others who have similar dreams to go for it. “I went from merely dreaming that I would ever be on a stage to performing at the world expo in Dubai. It still feels unreal to me. On that stage, I lived a dream,” a smiling Daniela shared. She continued, “To everyone who has a dream, it is possible once you believe, as cliche as it may sound. You’d be surprise how life works and where your art can take you.”

In one of the pieces Daniela performed said, she emphasised the belief that “Champions aren’t born; they create themselves.”

Reflecting on Guyana’s cultural representation altogether, Daniela said, “I believe my team and I worked so hard, overcame all our obstacles to be where we are and to be ‘champions’; we created ourselves from everything that was sent to hold us back.”

Daniela, also a model and advocate for social issues, has in the past, opened up about her struggles with her mental health. She has since been using her platform to promote these and other issues that are affecting society.

Outside of physical work, the young woman is also big on introspection. “I want to be able to continue to spread love, kindness and light wherever I go; it’s one of my personal goals. I believe in being the light. And, the world is in a very, very dark place so I tend to shine my light wherever I go; educate people, uplift people, inspire people with the things I do,” Daniela posited.

To this end, she said that her favourite quote is also the motto that drives the way she lives her life. It reads, “As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others the permission to do the same.”

Daniela has encouraged her peers to work hard, get educated and always be independent and kind. “They might forget your name but they will never forget the impact you’ve made,” she added.

Guyana’s stunning representation in Dubai

By Naomi Parris One of the most fulfilling feeling for me, is seeing my country portrayed tastefully on an international stage, and this week, Guyana’s representation at Expo2021 in Dubai did not disappoint.

On Tuesday, as the event hosted its ‘Guyana Day’ celebrations, many Guyanese at home and in other parts of the world had their eyes glued to their computers, cellphones and other gadgets to watch a well-dressed team

of Guyanese creatives perform their hearts out, giving the royals of Dubai, a mere glimpse of what Guyana has to offer.

I too was tuned into the performance that painted social media in the colours of the Golden Arrow Head, and even though I watched the events of the Expo unfold from a desktop screen, it was as if I was seated front and centre of the UAE stage; I was in awe and my heart was flooded with pride.

Admittedly, I did find myself wondering how much the dress weighed, and whether I might have been able to carry it, but those wonders were short-lived as I became drawn to Daniela’s poem which, through each stanza, painted an even more vivid picture of the paradise that we call home.

Up next was well-known recording artiste, Poonam Singh who performed her hit single G.U.Y.A.N.A., which only sought to emphasise the words spoken by the previous performer. Singh’s performance was backed by dancers of the National Dance Company; it was one that I will continue to hold dear to my heart. Her soothing voice reciting our National Motto: ‘One people, One Nation, One Destiny’ and describing the wonders that many are yet to see, reminded me of the beautiful places in Guyana that I have been so fortunate to visit.

The lyrics took me back to the trips I took cruising atop the mighty Essequibo River, or flying over the thick, lush trees of the interior regions and the feeling of being kissed with the ever-sweet coastland breeze.

At the drop of a hat, the next performer, the renowned Samuel Medas, came on stage like a dose of nostalgia, transporting me to the preCOVID-19 days of revelling through the streets of Georgetown, celebrating Mashrama-

ni. His stage time gave me flashbacks of a younger and fitter me gyrating behind a music truck on ‘Mash Day’.

Medas was later joined by Poonam Singh and another beautiful Guyanese singer/ songwriter, Tennicia Nekeita, who had been showcasing her dancing talents throughout the show. Even her presence behind the lead performers dominated attention; I was unable to keep my eyes off of her. She then lent her voice to the show, and together with Medas and Singh, the trio delivered a performance that warmed our hearts even more.

As the final song came to an end, all of the performers returned to the stage for the big reveal of speed painter, Winston Alexander’s work.

Throughout the performances, he was in the background working on a mesmerising painting of the Golden Arrow Head, coupled with a Map of Guyana. It was sheer brilliance, and I am still amazed; in less than 20 minutes, he painted a replica of the country’s flag, containing sceneries of trees, mountains and even the infamous Kaieteur Falls.

For the first time in a long time, I was at a loss for words to describe the love and patriotism that I felt from just watching the Dubai 2020 Expo. I can only image what it must have been like to witness it all first-hand. I can’t wait to see that more Guyanese creatives have to share with us and the rest of the world.

‘Guyana Day’ celebrations on October 19, we are not only impressed by the performances, but by the intricate and captivating work done by our fashion designers as well.

We recognise the brilliance of the ever-versatile Randy Madray, who masterminded the outstanding costumes for the entire cultural programme. These pieces brought to life, all that Guyana has to offer.

It painted a clear picture of the beauty and bounties that reside on this ‘Land of Many Waters’, and safe to say, we are once again stunned by Madray’s work, and the people who wore them elegantly.

And, although the Buzz is hardly a space for political figures, we thought it important to bend the rules just this once, to give much kudos to those responsible for the iconic dress worn by First Lady, Mrs. Arya Ali, as she also represented Guyana in Dubai.

In a recent post on her official Facebook page, the First Lady acknowledged that her bright yellow dress represented more than just fashion; it represented talent, and s o m e o f G u y a n a ’s most distinct features such as our national flower, the Victoria Lily and our national bird, the Canje Pheasant.

She went further to explain that the dress was made by Sally Stitch Fix - a local woman-led small business - and was hand painted by the talented Courtney Douglas. We at the Buzz are appreciative of the fact that the First Lady, since assuming office in 2020, has been a steady customer of our incredibly gifted local designers. We are even more pleased that she wears authentic, locally created pieces whilst performing duties outside of Guyana.

FOOD security, climate change, technology, environment, infrastructure and revision of the visa policy that exists for travels to and from Guyana and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were among a number of areas of technical cooperation discussed between President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE on Thursday.

According to a press statement issued by the Office of the President following the discussion, President Ali and His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance closer technical cooperation between the two counties.

During the meeting held at the UAE Pavilion at the Expo, President Ali expressed gratitude to the UAE Foreign Minister as well as his colleague Minister of International Cooperation, Her Excellency Reem Ebrahim Al-Hashimy, who also served as Managing-Director for the iconic Expo2020 Dubai.

“We came with a clear intention to extend the foundation of the relationship that we want to grow and expand for the betterment of both the UAE and Guyana,” President Ali said during the engagement.

He explained that since arriving in Dubai, Guyana’s delegation has engaged in discussions with many agencies, including the Abu Dhabi Ports. These engagements, according to President Ali, is an indication of Guyana’s success at the Expo.

STRENGTHEN BILATERAL RELATIONS During the discussions, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan assured the Guyanese President of the UAE’s support to strengthen bilateral relations.

The two countries also committed to setting a tangible results-based agenda moving forward, the press release noted.

Immediately following the discussions, a MoU was inked to advance closer technical cooperation between the UAE and Guyana. The document was signed

by Senior Minister in

the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh and his UAE counterpart, Minister Reem Al-Hashimy.

In addition to Minister Singh, the meeting was also attended by the Non-Resident Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Guyana, Saleh Ahmad Salem Alzaraim Alsuwaidi and Ambassador and Presidential Assistant and Personal envoy to Greece, the Middle East and Africa, George Hallaq.

Additionally, President Ali accompanied

by Minister Singh also met with officials of the UAE’s ‘Elite Agro’, one of the largest producers of fresh fruits and vegetables, to discuss investment opportunities in Guyana’s agricultural sector.

These meetings are happening on the sidelines of Dubai’s iconic Expo2020, which has seen Guyana being giv-

en much prominence; aside from having its own pavilion, the expo also featured a spectacular ‘Guyana Day’ celebration.

INVESTMENT HUB Speaking at the opening of the ‘Guyana Day’ cultural show, the Head of State was keen on marketing Guyana as an investment hub, boasting of its potential in all areas, including eco-tourism, agriculture, energy and many others.

In a very descriptive speech, the President was able to give insight into all the things that Guyana has to offer.

“Guyana is set to become a leading oil and gas producer, an energy powerhouse, a bastion of food security, a prime destination for sustainable tourism, and a regional information communications technology hub,” Dr. Ali boasted.

He noted, however, that in order to convert

the country’s abundant resources into wealth, and to further translate that wealth into human prosperity, investments are needed. He gave the assurance too that the government is keen on attracting investments across all sectors to drive the country’s transformative agenda.

“I invite you all to come and do business in my country. We welcome you; we have an open economy, and with in-

vestor-friendly policies in place, including attractive incentive regimes, laws which protect the right to property, and which also allows freedom to repatriate profits,” Dr. Ali posited.

He emphasised that Guyana is a win-win destination for investors, as the country is on an irreversible growth trajectory, with a rapidly expanding economy, and a wealth of sectors with the capacity and potential for expansion, and new resources to support it all.

“If we speak about world food production, environmental services, world-class eco-tourism, freshwater potential, mining opportunities, research and development, human transformation, health and educational services, I assure you Guyana will be an important part of that conversation,” President Ali had stressed.

He went further to highlight Guyana’s unique geographic location, which provides investors simultaneous access to both Caribbean and South American markets. President Ali is expected to wrap up his Dubai engagements and return to Guyana by next week.

Windies match-winners make them one of the favourites - Badree

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CMC) – Former champion leg-spinner Samuel Badree, one of the architects behind West Indies’ capture of the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups, has installed the reigning champions as one of the favourites for this year’s tournament despite their dodgy recent form.

West Indies lost both opening warm-up games this week, going down by seven wickets to Pakistan on Monday and by 56 runs to minnows Afghanistan on Wednesday.

However, Badree said the Caribbean side remained a massive threat due to the plethora of match-winners in the side.

“Five years later and I think West Indies have as good a chance as any team to win the title again,” Badree wrote in his tournament column for the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“Many people have pegged them as the favourites, and quite rightly so because of the match-winners in that line-up.

“Any one of their players can single-handedly win a game and the experience of Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo to name just a few, with their ability to stay calm under pressure, will count for a lot.”

West Indies will raise the curtain on the tournament tomorrow with a blockbuster clash against England, in what will be a repeat of the 2016 final in Mumbai. Then, West Indies had appeared heading for defeat in pursuit of 156 before Carlos Brathwaite struck sixes from the first four deliveries of the final over from Ben Stokes to earn his side victory.

With England boasting a “wonderful” side, Badree said he was anticipating the contest would be “full of pyrotechnics”.

“If they (West Indies) can get off to a good start, I think they’ll be able to go all the way but England are the defending 50-over World Cup champions and under Eoin Morgan, their white-ball cricket has been exceptional,” Badree pointed out.

“They’ve got a wonderful team – very experienced bowlers with real pace and then the likes of Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid as well – so I expect the winner of the opening West

Indies v England game will make it into the semi-finals.”

He continued: “The West Indies will be confident heading into their opening match … they’re the defending champions and, of course, they won that incredible final against England in 2016.

“They also beat England in the first match of the Super 10 that year when Chris Gayle scored a brilliant hundred, so when it comes to T20 World Cups, the West Indies have had the upper hand.

“Having said that, T20 cricket is such a fickle game that either of those two powerful teams can win. I really expect it to be a thriller, a game full of pyrotechnics with power hitters on both teams but I would give West Indies the slight edge.

“Too much time has elapsed from that final five years ago to have any real part to play this time round but there will be plenty of memories of it.”

West Indies have been installed in a difficult Group 1 which also features Australia and South Africa, in addition to two yet-to-be determined qualifiers.

FIFA says 57 more Lady Jags will bounce back - head coach Dr Joseph refugees evacuated from Afghanistan

(REUTERS) - The evacuation of a second group of 57 refugees from Afghanistan linked to women's soccer and basketball, comprising mainly women and children, has been completed after negotiations, world soccer's governing body FIFA said yesterday.

There have been numerous evacuations since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan's capital Kabul on August 15 and announced a new government last month after U.S.-led foreign forces withdrew and the Western-backed government collapsed.

Last week FIFA said it had worked with the Qatari

government to evacuate almost 100 football players and their families from Afghanistan. The 57 individuals in the second group were also flown to Qatar on a charter flight.

Earlier this month, FIFA had also helped cycling body UCI in the evacuation of 165 refugees via Albania. "We would like to express our sincere thanks to both the Amir of Qatar and the Prime Minister of Albania for helping us with this humanitarian mission and for all their assistance in safely relocating these members of the football community in such challenging circumstances," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

"I am also calling on all of our friends in governments and in the football community across the world to help us in obtaining residence permits and visas for the evacuees so that they can start a new life in safe and secure circumstances."

Australia evacuated more than 50 female Afghan athletes and their dependants after lobbying by prominent figures from the sporting world while several players from Afghanistan's national female youth soccer squad were granted asylum in Portugal.

LADY Jags head coach, Dr Ivan Joseph, is backing the Guyanese women to bounce back tomorrow, when they face Puerto Rico in their final friendly match.

Guyana’s senior women’s National football team fell 6-1 in their opening match on Wednesday, in what was their first International match in almost three years, when the two sides met at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium.

According to Dr Joseph, “When you lose a game 6-1 there are not many changes you can make that will make a difference in that match, but you can expect the same hustle and hopeful fight that we’ll have. The gap is too big to fix in two days, but we’re looking forward to making a difference.”

The Lady Jags head coach was full of praise for his troops, adding “for just coming together, and not having everybody, like most national teams, I like that they were willing to try to play. The goal came with a little bit of hustle and capitalising on their mistake, but still it was that player’s first-ever international goal, and we’re willing and sharing in that celebration.”

Annalisa Vincent, who hails from Region One, scored in the 59th minute for Guyana.

The two-match International Friendly against Puerto Rico serves as a preparation for Guyana ahead of their CONCACAF Women’s Championship Qualifiers.

Guyana have been drawn into Group F of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship qualifiers with Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua, Turks and Caicos, and Dominica.

Dark horses no more: Black Caps ready for World Cup glory FROM Cricket World Cups to T20 World Cups to World Test Championships, the Black Caps have been backed to perform at pretty much every ICC event for the past decade but rarely considered the serious contenders for silverware that they should be.

In this year's tournament, however, they will not be coming in under the radar.

ICC Men's Cricket World Cup runners-up in 2019 and 2015, and semi-finalists at the last ICC Men's T20 World Cup, New Zealand ended a

21-year-wait for success at a men's ICC event with victory over India at the World Test Championship Final.

That taste of silverware could prove a starting point for success across all formats, particularly given how many members of that Test squad will be involved in the UAE. Often revered for their versatility and innovation as a unit, New Zealand come to this year’s tournament as a world-class outfit, boasting depth in the squad and quality in key areas. Beefing up their batting stocks through the

emergence of players like Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway, their stocks with the ball could deliver just like they did in Southampton in whites.

New Zealand boast a markedly stronger bowling attack on paper than their squad five years ago, with the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee honing their shortform craft, and Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner now able to draw on 57 and 52 T20 international appearances respectively.

In spite of this, it’s tough

to gauge New Zealand’s form heading into the tournament, given the cancellation of their series in Pakistan, and a number of players rested for their tour of Bangladesh.

The Black Caps were better on balance against Trans-Tasman rivals Australia earlier in the year, and against defending World Cup champions, the West Indies, at the back end of 2020.

Preparations for the campaign have been far from ideal for Kane Williamson’s men. For those who are not playing franchise cricket, a training camp in UAE has begun earlier than scheduled, ahead of warm-up matches and their opener on October 26.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was the most valuable player (MVP) in last season's finals, contributed 32 points 14 rebounds for the Bucks against one of the pre-season favourites.

Meanwhile Los Angeles Lakers lost 121114 to Golden State Warriors.

LeBron James scored 34 points and Anthony Davis added 33 in the defeat.

DR Mohammed Moosajee, the former team manager of South Africa cricket, has expressed his anguish regarding the divided stance of the Proteas on the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.

The men’s national team already has the option of raising a fist, taking a knee or standing to attention before games. While some players take a knee, others go for alternative options.

Moosajee urged the Proteas to stay united in their fight against racism and discrimination on the basis of colour. He sounded disappointed for the reason that the situation surrounding racism hasn’t changed despite a number of cultural camps held for over a decade.

Moosajee put forth his opinions while speaking at the Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings.

“Unfortunately, some current players appear to be misinformed and believe taking the knee is supporting the notion that black lives matter more. They need to be educated so that they appreciate that taking the knee is all about a stand against racism and discrimination and supporting the notion that Black lives matter as much,” Moosajee was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

“It is a pity that the Proteas Team have not adopted a unified approach to the issue and highlights that even though we have been having discussions for a number of years already, these discussions need to continue, because we still have some way to go to get all our people to fully appreciate the injustices of the past.

“I would like to see a recommendation from the Ombudsman (Dumisa Ntsebeza) urging the Proteas to adopt a unified approach,” he added.

Moosajee was at the forefront of various roles in South Africa cricket for as long as 16 years until 2019. Apart from being a manager, he also served as the team doctor. He said that he, along with former skipper Graeme Smith tried to figure out ways to curb the incidents of racism.

Misbah-ul-Haq slams ‘cosmetic surgery’ culture in Pakistan cricket FORMER cricketers slamming Pakistan cricket isn’t a new story. Time and again, many prominent names have come out and talked about the loopholes in the team management and national board. Misbah-ul-Haq is the latest one to join the list.

The former Pakistan captain has come out hard at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), saying there’s no chance of improvement in Pakistan cricket unless it changes its culture and stops hunting for scapegoats.

For the unversed, Misbah-ul-Haq, along with bowling coach Waqar Younis, shockingly stepped down as Pakistan’s head coach last month. His tenure was marred with controversies as many players reportedly had some issues with his working style. Speaking for the first time after his sudden resignation, Misbah said “cosmetic surgery” will not change anything in Pakistan cricket as the problems are rooted deep within the system.

“The problem is that in our cricket we only look at results and we don’t give time or have patience for planning ahead and improving the system,” Mishbah-ul-Haq said on ‘A-Sports’ channel.

“We don’t focus on the fact that we have to develop our players at the domestic level and then in the national team and work on their skill development. We want results and if we don’t get the desired results we start searching for scapegoats,” he added.

Misbah further said Pakistan cricket tends to find excuses after losing - a failure - instead of focussing on the required areas. “Unfortunately,

Shakib stars as Windies Women set for short tour of Pakistan ahead of WC qualifiers Bangladesh book place in Super 12s

SHAKIB Al Hasan produced another sensational performance as Bangladesh qualified for the Super 12s with an 84-run win against Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Shakib, second in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I all-rounder rankings, took four for nine in a typically masterful spell to help dismiss PNG for just 97.

He also weighed in with the bat, scoring an impressive 46, as the Tigers made an imposing 181 for seven.

PNG’s fielders took some spectacular catches but with the bat they struggled to fend off Shakib, with Kiplin Doriga the only one to offer some resistance with an unbeaten 46.

Bangladesh batting coach Ashwell Prince said his charges would go “full throttle” in this match and they had a chance to do just that from the outset after winning the toss.

However, Mohammad Naim was out second ball to Kabua Morea after he picked out a fielder at deep square leg.

Shakib partnered Liton Das at the crease and the pair helped stave off an early crisis with a 50-run partnership, with Shakib cleverly rotating the strike in a phase of the game the Tigers struggled for boundaries.

Das was then brilliantly caught in the deep by Sese Bau off captain Assad Vala while attempting a slog-sweep and, with a run-rate under seven, PNG did well to restrict Bangladesh in the first half of their innings.

first boundary in 32 balls, and left-arm spinner Simon Atai removed Mushfiqur Rahim for five, as Bangladesh continued to struggle.

Mahmudullah and Shakib tried to up the run-rate, with both striking a six, before Charles Amini took a spectacular catch by diving forwards at long on to dismiss Shakib.

The pressure fell on Mahmudullah to lead with the bat and he started well by cutting two balls to the boundary to reach 29 off 18 balls.

He then hit two sixes and a four off Chad Soper in the 17th over to reach his half-century off just 27 balls, the fastest 50 in the tournament so far. However, he was out on the 28th ball after hitting a full toss to deep square leg.

Nurul Hasan provided an entertaining cameo, with fours from his first two balls, while Afif Hossain made 21 before another brilliant catch – this time from Damien Ravu – saw him head back to the pavilion for 21.

Mohammad Saifuddin finished the innings in style, with sixes off the last two balls and a four from a free hit, to steer Bangladesh to 181 for seven.

by Saifuddin’s in-swinger, while Taskin Ahmed removed Vala five balls later thanks to a fine catch by Hasan behind the stumps.

Not to be outdone by PNG’s superb fielding, Bangladesh’s catchers were on fire, as Naim sprinted round from wide long on to take a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Amini at the beginning of the fifth over, while the bowler, Shakib, picked up another wicket three balls later as PNG fell to 14 for four.

Shakib returned four overs later to take his third wicket, with Bau caught by Naim in the deep, before the big-hitting Norman Vanua fell to Mahedi Hasan midway through the 10th.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed that the West Indies Women are set to tour Pakistan for three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) from November 8 to 14. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed all the tour logistics and has submitted detailed medical and security plans to CWI for final review.

The West Indies Women are due to arrive in Pakistan on November 1 for the ODI series that is scheduled to be played at the National Stadium in Karachi.

This will be the West Indies Women’s third bilateral series in 2021, after hosting Pakistan and South Africa in the Caribbean this summer.

The West Indies players are currently in Antigua for a High-Performance training camp as part of the team’s preparation for the upcoming Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.

CWI’s CEO, Johnny Grave said: “This reciprocal tour to Pakistan is an important part of our preparation plans ahead of the World Cup qualifying tournament that is scheduled to take place

“This tour to Pakistan will give the team the chance to play in different conditions compared to the Caribbean and have more high-level competitive cricket ahead of aiming to secure one of the three qualifying spots available for the Women’s Cricket World Cup next year.”

“The security plan arranged by the PCB is the same high level that the West Indies Men’s and Women’s teams received when they last toured Pakistan in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Independent security advisors, Eastern Star International (ESI) have confirmed to both CWI and WIPA that they are satisfied that the risk is manageable and can be mitigated to an acceptable level of safety. We will now take a final recommendation to our Board of Directors before the Selection Panel confirms the squad.”

The West Indies Women will travel directly to Zimbabwe after the ODI Series for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers from November 21 to December 5. They will be one of ten

teams, along with Pakistan, aiming to secure one of three qualifying places for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand in February 2022.

Australia paceman Pattinson retires from international cricket AUSTRALIA fast bowler James Pattinson has retired from international cricket less than two months before the start of the Ashes.

The 31-year-old's start to the season has been delayed

by COVID-19 lockdowns and an injury and the quick has decided to call time on representing his country.

Pattinson played for Australia 40 times and had been expected to add to his 21 Test appearances in the upcoming series against England, which is due to start at The Gabba on December 8.

"Leading into pre-season I really wanted to give the Ashes a crack but in the end, I haven't had the preparation I would have liked heading into the coming season," Pattinson said in a statement.

"If I was to be part of the Ashes I would need to do myself and my team-mates justice. I didn't want to be

focus more on Victoria, helping the young guys develop, perhaps some cricket in England and spending more time with my family."

Pattinson made his Test comeback against England in 2019 following three-and-

a-half years out of the side, having undergone surgery on a serious back injury.

Can West Indies overcome recent form to defend their title? … Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran's form, and Andre Russell's fitness will be key for them

By Firdose Moonda AS the defending champions and the only team to hold this title twice, West Indies should be favourites but they come into this tournament in worse shape than either of the previous wins.

This time, West Indies hold a win-loss ratio of 0.666, which means they’re losing two out of every three games they play.

No other team in the Super 12 is doing that bad, with most doing losing once in every two matches, if that.

There’s always an argument to be made that pre-tournament form counts for less than we think it does, especially when it comes to West Indies.

But at an event where teams have to win at least three group matches to progress to the semi-final, emerging victorious every third game, as West Indies have been doing, simply won’t be enough.

West Indies will need to reel off strong performances successively, and there are also questions over whether they have the personnel to do that.

of the five players who have appeared at every T20 World Cup to date – Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo – and there’s a debate over Gayle’s inclusion because of his recent form.

Curtly Ambrose doesn’t think Gayle should be an automatic pick, resulting in Gayle lashing out and Viv Richards coming to Ambrose’s defence.

Apart from the concerns around Gayle, West Indies will also be worried about Nicholas Pooran’s lack of runs, and the gamble they took by including Ravi Rampaul on the CPL form (he last played for them nearly six years ago) and leaving Jason Holder out.

Despite all that, West Indies will be playing for something bigger than themselves. They’ve confirmed they will continue to gesture in support of anti-racism and will take a knee before each game.

RECENT FORM Fairly average. West Indies lost 3-2 in a see-saw series to South Africa, beat an understrength Australian side 4-1 and then lost the only match that was not rained out in a four-game series, to Pakistan.

BATTING Much responsibility will rest on the shoulders of the opening

pair of Evin Lewis and one of Lendl Simmons and Andre Fletcher. Lewis is West Indies’ highest T20I run-scorer in 2021 and sixth in the world, while Simmons is their next most successful batter.

Shimron Hetmyer will have to operate as the glue between those in the line-up whose form has come under the microscope, Gayle and Pooran, and the pressure on Hetmyer may grow.

Lower in the order, Roston Chase, who has never played a T20I but topped the CPL run charts will play an important all-round role while Kieron Pollard’s finishing could prove decisive BOWLING Left-arm seamer Obed McCoy has been one of the finds of the year for West Indies after establishing himself in the shortest format side over the last few months and becoming their leading bowling this year.

He will have the experience of Bravo and Andre Russell to draw on, which gives West Indies a strong pace attack albeit without Holder.

It remains to be seen whether they have enough in the spin department. Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh is their frontline slower bowler with the rest of the duties falling to left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, Chase and perhaps even Gayle.

PLAYER TO WATCH Chris Gayle is the batter who made T20, and T20 is the format that made Chris Gayle, which is big enough a reason to watch him.

But if you need another, at 42, Gayle is the oldest player in this tournament and although he may not like the suggestion, it could well be his last T20 World Cup. Age alone will not decide if Gayle plays in another major competition. Form has to have a say and it’s not looking too good on that front. Gayle played just two matches for Punjab Kings in the second half of the IPL before leaving the bubble to refresh himself ahead of the T20 World Cup. Before that, he scored 165 runs in nine innings in the CPL (average 18.33), with a top score

of 42 and has just one half-century in T20I cricket in 26 innings, dating back to March 2016.

KEY QUESTION: HOW FIT IS RUSSELL? He only played in three of Kolkata Knight Riders’ 10 games in the second half of the IPL as he picked up a hamstring injury.

Add that to the chronic knee issue that has hampered him in the past and it seems only reasonable to be concerned that Russell may not be available as much as West Indies need him to be at this tournament.

If that’s the case, it’s going to affect multiple areas of their game.

Russell’s batting allows West Indies to bat down to No. 9, and in his absence, they’ve often found themselves a bowling option short.

Despite having Pollard in their ranks, Russell is a twoin-one West Indies cannot do without for a tournament this important and they’ll hope he is fully fit and stays that way for the next month. (ESPNcricinfo)

Scotland secure historic qualification by topping Group B KYLE Coetzer produced a captain’s knock to steer Scotland to an eight-wicket win over Oman and book a place in the Super 12s at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

Scotland went into the clash with the hosts knowing that defeat could spell the end of the tournament, but this was a complete performance, as the Scots clinched top spot in Group B with a third win out of three – a historic achievement for the side.

That earns Scotland a place in Group 2 in the Super 12, alongside the likes of India, Pakistan and New Zealand, while Bangladesh ended up as runners-up in Group B and head to Group 1 as a result.

For Oman, there was to be no fairy tale at the Al Amerat Stadium with Jatinder Singh’s run-out off the second ball a sign of what was

to follow. A total of 122 always felt a little short, and so it proved.

Coetzer had not yet fired for Scotland at this World Cup, but

his 41 made it a comfortable chase, and even after he departed, Matt Cross and Richie Berrington did the rest.

Oman were always going to need a good start, with Jatinder their star batter in the first two matches, and when he was run-out after a complete misunderstanding on the second ball, it left the rest of the team with an uphill battle.

Kashyap Prajapati followed soon after for three, but Aqib Ilyas started to find his groove, hitting three fours and two sixes in a brisk 37.

Oman needed him to kick on, though, instead he picked out George Munsey on the boundary off the bowling of Michael Leask.

Mohammad Nadeem looked good in hammering Mark Watt for six over long on, but he was caught at short extra cover by Berrington off the very next ball for 25.

That left all the responsibility to skipper Zeeshan Maqsood, given one reprieve when he was caught

of a full toss from Chris Greaves that was above waist height.

He went on to make 34 before departing in the final over, but the wickets continued to tumble at the other end, and the total of 122 all out was not enough.

That became clear as Coetzer took an attacking approach to his innings, complemented by the free-scoring Munsey at the other end.

Munsey was caught by opposite number Jatinder after making 20, but Coetzer pushed on with three maximums to settle any nerves.

Khawar Ali finally found a way through Coetzer’s defences, but it was too little, too late, as Cross and Berrington got the team over the line comfortably with the latter smashing one last six to seal the win in emphatic fashion. (ICC Media)

THE Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) have collaborated to ensure that the country’s representatives at the inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, are given every possible chance of reaching the podium.

At a joint Press Conference yesterday, GBA president Steve Ninvalle and GOA head K. Juman-Yassin, highlighted that Patrick Harvey, Travis Inverary and Alisha Jackman, will have the service of a nutritionist, a psychologist, a physiotherapist and whatever else is needed for the trio to properly prepare for the November 25 – December 5 event in the South American country.

With the boxers also receiving $100 000 each from GOA, Ninvalle explained that the money is “not for their training programme, it's just for them to cushion the effects and the hardships that they may have.”

Meanwhile, the GOA’s long-serving president highlighted their happiness to support the GBA, with Ninvalle adding that the GOA has been the backbone of support for boxing throughout the years.

The boxers will head into a high-level training camp, which will also see boxers from Trinidad and Tobago join to shape their skills ahead of Cali.

“If I get tired, I won’t be able to concentrate and be able to study. So, during the day I would do the normal work that my teacher sent to me. I would have Zoom from 11AM to 5PM, and in the night I study but I call it a day like around 8:30, 9PM and go to my room and watch television,” she added.

She said she was also big on spending time chatting with her friends and was even into the tiktok craze. She wants to be an example to other children and would tell them that they do not need to endure undue stress to perform

well at the NGSA. Written annually, the NGSA tests Grade Six pupils in the area of Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies and Science, and their overall performance is used for placement at a secondary school. Pupils can either earn a spot at one of the national top secondary schools based on cut-off scores or be placed at a secondary school within their region or closest to their home.

Over the years, the NGSA has grown into being seen as ‘a big deal’ in the academic pursuit of the pupils, many of whom strive to work hard enough to earn a place at QC, the country’s premier secondary school.

In the lead up to her examinations which were written on August 4 and 5, Rambarran said she wanted to ensure she kept all anxiety at bay.

“I was calm because I just didn’t want to worry myself too much,” she said.

Notwithstanding her calm approach, she was still confident in her ability to secure a spot at QC. Her results were in line with her expectations.

“I wasn’t surprised because I knew I worked for it, so I was just excited,” she said.

Tajhol was also named among the country’s top one per cent performers.

Her parents, Yubraj and Sattie Rambarran, are very proud of not only their daughter’s performance but her ability to ensure she paced herself well in her studying during her preparations for the examinations.

Her dad shared hat Tajhol had begun setting her own pace of studying a few years ago, and, while they were a little worried at first, they eventually

“When I saw that in her, it looked strange to me. Starting from Grade One my wife and I would always work with her in

the afternoons, but as she got older, she started taking over her studies more herself. But we would be around her and always see her with her books and see that she is doing it. And when we approach the teachers, they would always say there’s nothing to complain about, she does her homework, she is always on time and participates in whatever they have.

So, we understood that there wasn’t need for those long extra hours,” Yubraj added.

Tajhol being a child that is never afraid to stand her ground, also caused her parents to trust her to use her own methods and schedule.

“If you tell her A she has B to tell you back.

She’s not the type of child that would just sit down and accept something,” her father noted.

Her mother was overwhelmed to the point of tears and said she was very proud of her daughter.

According to Tajhol, her focus now is on trying to maintain a high level of performance during her secondary school life. While she is open to studying more, she plans to ensure that she takes care of herself mentally.

“I know there will be more work and I will put more time towards the work, but I will always have time for myself and don’t punish myself too much.

And I will work hard to become a chartered accountant,” she said.

PAC meetings cancelled following complaint from ‘stressed-out’ staff – others reluctant to be replacement

MEETINGS of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that are scheduled for today and Monday have been cancelled owing to the undue stress parliamentary staff are experiencing as a result of the “unprofessional conduct” of some committee members.

This situation has become so unbearable that several complaints have been made and the parliamentary staff

are now refusing to work with the committee.

Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle on Thursday, Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs, said that the presiding Clerk of the PAC came to him earlier this week in a visibly distressed state, requesting to be removed.

“After the last meeting, the Clerk of the Committee came to my office in tears.

She broke down, she asked

to be removed. She told me she was sick. I observed that she was thin, she is sick and has lost weight. I have never seen her that thin, she has lost weight, she is fed up and I observed that for myself,” Isaacs said in a telephone interview.

The PAC last met on Monday, when issues had arisen between the government and the opposition sides over deliberations on the frequency with which

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira attempted to move a motion which sought to have the frequency of the PAC meetings remain once weekly. PAC Chairman Jermaine Figueira subsequently asked for additional time to review the submission, promising to resume meetings on Monday.

However, he later reneged and scheduled a meeting for today.

Isaacs said following the clerk’s request to be removed, he sought a replacement for the upcoming meetings; however, all of his staff were reluctant to work with the committee.

“I had a meeting with the Head of Committee Divisions and others, and they are all refusing. The most senior clerk, I asked her and she said

no. She said she troubles with her pressure. I spoke with the second most senior clerk, who also refused,” Isaacs explained.

He noted that he will be holding further meetings with the staff to work out a solution and have a clerk provided to the committee by next week. He said that would not be possible by Monday.

According to the Standing Order 6(8) of Parliament, the Clerk of the Assembly is responsible for providing every Select Committee of the Assembly with a clerk.

However, now unable to do so, Isaacs said he is left with no option but to cancel the scheduled meetings.

In a letter dated 21 October, 2021, Isaacs informed PAC Chairman, Jermaine Figueira, and other PAC members, of the cancellation of meetings and detailed the toll the behaviour of some committee members is having on his staff.

“Due to the frequent challenges being encountered at meetings of the Public Accounts Committee, the present Clerk of the Committee has developed health issues because of high stress levels and cannot continue to clerk the committee. All other Clerks of Committees are unwilling to clerk the Public Accounts Committee because of the unprofessional

conduct of some members of this committee, which is not conducive to a healthy working environment,” Isaacs outlined in his letter.

Isaacs said he stands with his staff in their sentiments towards the PAC. “What is written in the letter is the truth. They are the facts of the matter. The clerks have my support. They are my staff and I support them fully,” Isaacs established.

Being in charge of scrutinising financial irregularities flagged in the annual Auditor General (AG)’s reports., the work of the PAC is extremely important. The committee currently has a huge backlog and is only now scrutinizing the 2016 Audit Reports.

The PAC is responsible for providing general supervision over the functioning of the Auditor General in accordance with the rules, policies and procedures manual and for nominating members of the Public Procurement Commission for approval by the National Assembly and, thereafter, the appointment by the President.

The committee comprises nine members, five from the government side and four from the opposition and is chaired by a Member of Parliament (MP) from the main opposition.

Police Force, UG sign historic cooperation agreement

THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the University of Guyana (UG), on Thursday, signed a historic Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to develop new programmes and refine existing programmes that specifically cater for members of the GPF. During a simple ceremony at UG’s Turkeyen campus, a press statement from the GPF informed the public that the document was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (ag) with responsibility for Administration, Calvin Brutus, and UG’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Paloma Mohamed.

The document represents a consensus between the two major agencies after much deliberation. The release noted that “The MoA underscores the Guyana Police Force’s continuous and unwavering support and show of commitment to the development of its

ranks through education and training.”

The MoA will last for five years, with the option of renewal.

According to Brutus, in his remarks, the agreement caters to “the need for us to develop modules for our policemen and women, to ensure that we deliver on our mandate, in keeping with contemporary best practices for the police in our country.”

Part of the MoA has to do with accreditation of the Police Training College. The release quoted Deputy Commissioner Brutus as saying “Our college is just by name but the substance and the standard are not there. Our intention, under this agreement, is to ensure that we will be able to achieve this mandate which is to have our college accredited in the shortest possible time, as well as train our instructors to deliver the professional part of the programme,” he stated.

Professor Paloma Mohamed, in her remarks, expressed satisfaction in the historic partnership, noting that the strategic context will allow for more transparency and a more service-oriented Police Force with diversified service across the country.

“The Police Force is really taking on a very cutting edge, very focused, [and] a very dynamic path despite all the challenges they have been having, and we’re very happy to be working with the Police Force,” Dr Mohamed said.

Also in attendance at the signing ceremony were W/Assistant Superintendent Nicola Kendell, Officer-in-Charge of the Strategic Planning Unit; Assistant Superintendent Bharat Persaud, Deputy Finance Officer; Police Legal Advisor, Mandel Moore; and Head of the Police Corporate Communications Unit, Mark Ramotar.

No Room for Complacency

THE COVID-19 pandemic will not go away any time soon and could drag on well into the next year.

This is according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) which recently warned that the pandemic is likely to go on much longer than anticipated because poorer countries are not getting the vaccines they need.

The statistics show that less than five per cent of Africa’s population has been vaccinated compared to an average of 40 per cent in most other parts of the world.

In fact, more than 50 countries have been unable to meet the WHO target for 10 per cent of their population to be fully-vaccinated by the end of September. Most of these countries are low-income countries which have been severely challenged financially to procure vaccines in adequate quantities to meet the vaccination needs of their respective populations.

Despite the assistance rendered to many countries to get supplies of the vaccines through the Covax mechanism, a significant number of countries have been left behind and there are still a few countries that are yet to roll out vaccination programmes to their populations. The Covax mechanism

was set up to ensure that every individual has access to the COVID-19 vaccines, but was forced to scale back on its target because of inadequate funding, vaccine nationalism on the part of some of the richer nations and other logistical issues. Despite the constraints, it still managed to provide vaccines to several countries including Guyana. Unlike some other countries, Guyana did not depend only on the donations from Covax, but was highly proactive in getting supplies from other suppliers and from other friendly countries.

Part of the difficulty faced by some countries in the developing world has to do with the fact that some of the commitments made by the wealthier countries to donate vaccines to low income countries through the Covax mechanism or directly through bilateral engagements are yet to be fully realised. Several commitments were made at the recent UN General Assembly and other fora by the richer nations regarding vaccine donations but so far, much of that is still to be realised. Recent research on vaccine supplies in the G7 and the EU found that of the more than one billion doses pledged, less than 15 per cent have actually been delivered to date.

This is not to suggest that the richer nations have to bear the full burden of responsibility for vaccines shortages in low income countries. A lot has to do also with policies and programmes by individual countries and the extent to which they have been able to surmount internal challenges such as vaccine hesitancy and other forms of political and cultural impediments. There are some countries that are lagging behind not because of their inability to source the vaccines but because of logistical issues, a lack of an aggressive and robust roll-out plan and in some cases internal conflicts and political turmoil.

Guyana has done relatively well in terms of its vaccination drive and although there is no perfect metric on how to measure progress made in terms of vaccination and infection rates, it is no exaggeration to say that the country has been doing an exceptionally good job in the rolling out of its vaccination plan and in getting an increasing number of its population to take the vaccines. So far over 315,000 persons or approximately 62 per cent of the adult population have received their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine and more than 162,000, amounting to some 32 per cent

have received their second doses.

The ministry is also concurrently rolling out its adolescent vaccination programme which, from all indications, has been going on at a satisfactory pace. Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony has commended parents for allowing their children to take the vaccines and reminded parents and guardians that the US FDA-approved vaccines are not only safe, but also very effective in preventing the spread of the deadly COVID-19-virus.

The situation in the country, however, still remains worrying despite some recent progress in terms of infection rates. There can be no room for complacency and all Guyanese are encouraged to take the vaccines and to follow all the required guidelines and protocols issued by the Ministry of Health. There is only one sure way to break the back of the pandemic and that is to ensure that the full cohort of eligible Guyanese is fully vaccinated.

The PPP/C administration has been doing everything within its power to make the vaccines available to the country and its people. It is the responsibility and duty for us all to do our part to bring an end to the pandemic.

India has administered more vaccines than almost the entire globe combined Dear Editor, I WRITE to commend, compliment, extol, and congratulate the government of India on reaching the record milestone of administering over one billion vaccines on Thursday, October 21.

When one speaks of such a number of vaccinations prior to now, one was thinking of polio, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, etc. against which billions were “vaccinated” (administered the drop or the needle). And that was decades ago and certainly not for any one country but globally. No one in recent times ever thought of or could have imagined a billion vaccines administered in one country, but India achieved the milestone when just six months ago it was considered impossible. India has administered more vaccines than almost the entire globe combined.

In terms of COVID-related stats, India conducted 600 million COVID-19 tests of

its 1.4 billion people and found 34,128,098 infections. There were 453,000 deaths or just about a quarter of one per cent of the population. Some 98.5 per cent of those infected have recovered from COVID-19. There are over 300 million fully-vaccinated people in India or 37 per cent of the population; 75 per cent of adults got at least one jab and some half of all adults are fully vaccinated.

The Indian stats contrasts sharply the US that leads the world in testing at 660 million; recording 45.2 million infections; administering 732 million vaccines (less than half of India’s); and 190 million or 58 per cent of population fully vaccinated. In contrast with China, where the virus emerged and the world’s most populous country at 1.5B, China administered 223 million doses with 100 million fully vaccinated. China claims it administered 16 million tests and found 100 thousand infections with 4700 deaths. Medical scholars consider the data suspect because of secrecy of governance.

In India, the government celebrates the achievement. A 225-foot national flag is being flown in the country’s Red Fort marking the occasion. The Prime Minister, President, and other politicians have issued glorifying statements. Leaders of many countries sent congratulatory messages to the Indian government leadership.

The one billion mark of vaccination is a magnificent feat. It may take years, if not decades, for another country, nay an entire content, to attain that feat. India had a late start in vaccination roll out. And while it was vaccinating its people, India was also making vaccines available to several other countries including Guyana and CARICOM nations. India provided some 70 countries with vaccines including developed and European nations.

The developed countries kept their vaccines for themselves and only recently started making some (surplus) available to poor or developing countries. India was criticised by

the developed countries and even by prominent Guyanese and the media for its handling of COVID-19 in March and April when the country was devastated by the pandemic.

Since then, the Prime Minister took charge of COVID-19 vaccination from the 28 states and several territories.

Vaccination in India, as well as testing for COVID-19, as it is in the US and UK and several other countries, is free. Many countries charge for COVID-19 testing.

The country is celebrating “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” – freedom festival as a result of nectar from COVID-19 vaccines.

The achievement of administering one billion vaccines is indeed a feat to be celebrated. I also wish to thank India for providing Guyana with hundreds of thousands of vaccines that help to protect our people.

Self-confessed killer ‘Ratty’ charged for murder of Kaneville man appeals life sentence

PRINCIPAL Magistate Judy Latchman, on Monday, remanded Seon Caesar, called “Ratty” to prison for the murder of Nelson Thomas, also known as “Rambo.”

Caesar, 25, appeared at the Grove/Diamond Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on September 9, 2021, at Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Thomas, during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

He was remanded to prison until November 9.

Caesar is the second suspect to be charged in connection with Thomas’ murder. Last month, Le-

roy Griffith was remanded to prison by Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the same court for the capital offence.

Nelson Thomas, 36, of Fourth Field, Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was stabbed to death during a suspected robbery, several hours after registering his newborn.

Reports are that Thomas and his wife had travelled to Region Four to register their child after working for quite some time in an interior region.

At around 19:00 hours, while at home, Thomas reportedly told his mother that he was going to visit his uncle at Second Street, Kaneville.

It is unclear what happened immediately after Thomas left his house, but a resident of Kaneville told police that at around 21:30 hours, he looked out and saw the miner lying motionless under a shed attached to the eastern side of his house.

The resident subsequently called the police and reported the matter at the Grove Police Station.

In his report, he said: “It appears that the deceased was returning home when the suspect(s) attempted to rob him and stabbed him in the process.”

Thomas was escorted to the Diamond Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

AKEEM Haymer, called ‘Curry’, who had confessed to the 2017 fatal stabbing of 34-year-old Rawle Rodrigues during a robbery at the Route 40 minibus park, has moved to the Court of Appeal to challenge his life sentence.

In his Notice of Appeal, Haymer is arguing that his sentence is severe in all forms and as such, should be set aside.

He and his accomplice,

Affiba Yenkana, called ‘Dougla’, were indicted for murder, but they both opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

The duo admitted that on January 20, 2017, at Croal Street, Stabroek, they unlawfully killed Rodrigues during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

In July, Justice Sandil Kissoon, at the Demerara High Court, sentenced both men to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole

after serving 15 years.

According to reports, on the said date, three men attacked and later stabbed Rodrigues in the chest during a robbery. The men had allegedly trailed him from the Demico Roof Garden, where he was earlier seen consuming alcohol.

A third accused, Wayne Gilbert, who was charged separately, is currently on remand awaiting his trial at the High Court.

Two cops charged with rape

TWO ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were on Thursday last charged with the rape of a 21-yearold woman, according to a release from the GPF. The two accused, 30year old Rellon D’Andrade of Phoenix Park, West Bank

Demerara (WBD), and 22-year-old Terrence Hamilton of ‘E’ Field, Sophia, appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that D’Andrade and Hamilton committed the act between August

5, 2020 and August 6, 2020 at Industrial Site, Tabatinga, Central Lethem.

The duo were not required to plead to the charge and were placed on $75,000 bail each.

The case has been adjourned until December 6, 2021.

Sugar will live on and progress under this government Dear Editor, WHILST sugar remains the ‘sick man’ of the economy, the government has so far ensured that it is not a ‘dead man’.

Sugar’s intended death was well planned and carefully executed by the Coalition Government. Grinding estates were closed instead of remaining operational and despite promises of rehabilitation and capitalisation works to be undertaken, nothing was done.

The plan to suffocate and strangle the sugar industry to death was well orchestrated during the five year in which the Coalition was in government. At first the Coalition made it seem as though they were interested in the survival of sugar.

During the 2015 Election Campaign, Leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan, had said that, “we are not going to close the sugar industry… we will make that industry profitable again… it creates so much employment directly and indirectly….” Then they held a sugar conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in August 2015 where they emphasised the importance of the sugar industry to the economy. At this conference the erstwhile ‘champion’ of the sugar workers, Mr Moses Nagamootoo, had said that, “Government will not abandon sugar in troubled times… the focus is to make sugar work. We have too many workers who stand to lose with the collapse of the industry. This government will not allow

sugar to sink.” Subsequently, the Coalition sponsored a Commission of Inquiry which provided a 10-year plan to make the industry viable without the closure of any of the estates. But thereafter, the Coalition conjured a White Paper which provided for the ‘right sizing’ of the Industry - a euphemism for the closure of four estates and the dismissal of over 7,000 employees.

This was not all. After the closure, the Coalition allowed the closed estates to rot and decay and assets stolen or sold for peanuts to friends and families. These assets include billions of dollars in standing canes, infrastructures, punts, machinery and equipment, factories and buildings.

Now the replacement of these will take a lot more finances in capital investments.

The former Minister, Mr Winston Jordan, had promised that these estates will be kept in ‘moth ball’ conditions to ensure they are attractive to investors. But the opposite happened.

Even this was not all! A $30 billion Bond was secured in July 2018 and Mr Winston Jordan was adamant in his commitment and had made it clear that it was “to rescue GuySuCo… so that GuySuCo can come back on its feet…we will try to push as fast as possible to get it out of its struggles.” Ironically, it is common knowledge what is done to take a ‘struggling animal’ out of its ‘struggles’ (a shot to the head). This bond was secured more than one year after the closure of

the estates and was supposed to be used for: capital injection, support infrastructure, upgrades at Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt Estates and to develop new co-generation capacities to support estate operations and sell to the national power grid. The plan would have also entailed the production of plantation white sugar as a value-added product for the local and Caribbean market where there is a great demand and a lucrative market as such.

But alas! More than $17 billion was spent and none of the above was achieved.

However, history is a great teacher.

This is not the first time that the PNC had attempted to decapitate GuySuCo. In the 1970s the PNC saw that sugar was very profitable and devised a scheme to get its hands on it.

Then in 1974 the sugar levy was introduced which ‘creamed off’ the profits and the PNC invested in harebrained ventures and indulged in massive squandering. The Sugar Levy took off from 55 to 85 per cent for every dollar for every tonne of sugar produced and sold in excess of a given price range. After the nationalisation in 1976, this continued under the PNC Government and during this period no capital investments were done in the sugar industry and it was only about routine maintenance and replacements of worn out parts of machinery and equipment. There was no vision for the longevity of the industry.

The PNC nor the Coalition as it is called now, was ever interested in the sur-

vival and progress of the sugar Industry or the agriculture sector as a whole, which it sees as the PPP support base. Today, the industry and the agriculture sector as whole is facing both the ‘pandemic’ unleashed on it by the Coalition for five long years as well as the fallout from the worst flood in Guyana for over 40 years.

But under the PPP Government it is recovering from both.

It is a miracle that the sugar industry is still not only standing, but fighting its way to surmount these challenges. At this point the industry needs all the support it can get.

This government has shown that it is committed to the progress of the entire agriculture sector and not just sugar and those who are criticising the support for the sugar industry must acknowledge the billions of dollars of cash relief given to the rice industry, the cash crops and the livestock industry. Everyone in this country has received some sort of cash relief since this government took office.

It is not just sugar.

In conclusion, I wish to remind ourselves that the sugar industry is resilient and even after the worst flood in decades, Estates such as Albion, are already in the process of rebuilding.

Sugar will live on and progress under this government.

Guyana accredits Seven-month-old infant, Ambassador to Qatar five adults die of ‘COVID’

Man remanded for alleged rape of three boys

RAVELLO Tyndall, a 39-year-old resident of Auchlyn Estate, Corentyne, Berbice, was on Thursday last charged with the rape of three male juveniles, according to a press release from the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

Tyndall was not required to plead to the indictable charges that he committed

the act against three males aged 15, 16, and 17.

The man appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where he was remanded for the alleged act contrary to Section 3 (3) and Section 10 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Cap08:03.

Tyndall will remain remanded until November 8.

SIX more persons, including a seven-month-old infant, have died after contracting the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), taking Guyana’s overall death toll to 887 as of October 21, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has reported.

According to a MoH p r e s s r e l e a s e , t h e p atients were admitted with symptoms presented as COVID-19, but died while receiving care at medical institutions. “Samples were taken at the time of admission, which subsequently returned positive tests.”

The ministry said that the fatalities are three males, including a 64-yearold of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), who died on October 08; a seven-month-old infant of Region One (Barima-Waini), who died on October 17; and a 42-year-old of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), who died on October 20.

All six persons were unvaccinated. It should be noted, however, that vaccines are not yet applicable to infants.

The Health Ministry has expressed its sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased, and noted that every effort will be made to provide all necessary support during their time of need.

The Ministry of Health, in its release, has called on the public to allow the families of the deceased their privacy.

It also made no bones about calling for persons here to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures (No.22), which are in effect

until October 31, 2021. A national curfew remains in effect every night between 22:30 hrs and 04:00 hrs.

In its release, the Health Ministry emphasised to the public “the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home”; “the importance of maintaining the six-feet physical distance from others”; and “the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

A total of 74 new cases were recorded. The country has now recorded a total of 34,800 COVID-19 cases with a total of 30,372 recovered cases.
