Telecoms Bill for National Assembly today

The Telecommunications (Amendment) Bill 2016 is expected to be read for the second time in the National Assembly and pave the way for a rigorous debate.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes The bill could be passed after the debate, once it is not re-sent to a Special Select Committee for further fine-tuning.

The bill has journeyed through years of intense deliberations and consultations, particularly with the two main mobile service providers in the country – the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) and Digicel Guyana.

The bill seeks to create

a competitive regime in the telecommunications sector, by providing for an open, liberalised and competitive sector that will be attractive to new market entrants and investors, while preserving the activities of the current participants.

As it is, the bill is expected to result in greater choice, better quality of service and lower prices to consumers.

It also specifically addresses the expansion of telecommunication networks and services into unserved and under-served areas, through the institution of a new universal access/universal service programmes, in an effort to further national, regional, social and economic development.

With the expectation of the bill being passed in the House today, Minister of Public Telecommunications Cathy Hughes believes that stakeholders who contributed to its drafting are satisfied with it in its current form.

“I think they [stakeholders] are satisfied with

She went on to explain why she was of this view, detailing the history of the bill, which has its origins under the PPP administration.

T h e Te l e c o m m u n i cations Bill, which was read for the first time on May 24 of this year, was first introduced in 2011 and revised in 2013. It was with a Special Select Committee in the 10th Parliament and was near

conclusion when Parliament was prorogued in 2014 by then president Donald Ramotar.

After the APNU+AFC assumed executive office last year, the bill underwent a new set of consultations with GT&T, Digicel and other stakeholders including the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the University of Guyana (UG) and several non-governmental organisations.

It was subsequently submitted to Cabinet. Two overseas consultants, Janice Brendman and Geeta Raghubir were also appointed by the Government to assist in completing the bill.

Confident that the bill is one which was crafted to benefit the people of Guyana, the minister boasted of the extensive consultations which were held.

She explained that written submissions and oral presentations were made to the Special Select Committee and that committee took into consideration all the recommendations which were made.

“The committee considered all of the comments, submissions and presentations which were made. So I don’t think

anyone could say that we didn’t consult enough,” Minister Hughes said.

She further went on to point out that the committee took note of those recommendations and suggestions which they incorporated into the bill with the aim of developing the telecommunications sector.

However, she revealed that Digicel – one of the two mobile service providers – had some concerns regarding interpretation of the term “Net Neutrality” as is listed in the bill. Minister Hughes noted though that the concern was considered by the select committee.

Loosely defined, the term “Net Neutrality” refers to the principle that Internet service providers (such as Digicel and GT&T) should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favouring or blocking particular products or websites.

POLICE investigators were over the weekend tracking two separate investigations in which two under-age girls at a remote Amerindian community in the Moruca sub-region were interfered with, one of whom was allegedly impregnated by her father.

According to police sources, several police officers travelled to the community, which is accessible from the Acquero Police Station in Santa Rosa, Moruca by road followed by boat.

A resident of the community told this publication on Saturday that the two girls, both of whom are under the age of 16, were first observed by teachers at a school in the area.

One of the young ladies informed persons in the community that sometime last week a young man in the area attacked her and inappropriately interfered with her in the process.

In another case, an investigation was launched in the community by residents after it was discovered that a young lady, said to be 14 years old, was pregnant.

It was reported that the young lady’s father was seen as the person of interest and an educator in the community reported the matter to the Acquero Police Station at Santa Rosa on

On Saturday, a police source told this publication that indeed ranks had travelled from the police outpost at Acquero to the remote community to launch an investigation into the two allegations.

He said that the ranks were searching for one of the perpetrators in the incident.

Reports are that the young lady, whose father is being investigated by the lawmen, reported that a young

man from the village had interfered with her.

However, inconsistencies in her explanations and information from residents have seen her father being viewed as a person of interest.

The officers were expected to return with the two suspects on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised at Santa Rosa about the police officers being illequipped to travel out of the area.

Meanwhile, the Berbice man who is accused of raping his three stepdaughters, ages four, seven and 10, was apprehended by police early Saturday morning at his home.

Commander of the Police’s ‘B’ Division, Ian Amsterdam, told the Guyana Chronicle that they are awaiting the report from the Child Protection Agency in order to institute charges against the man.

The mother remains in police custody and is expected to be charged with neglect.

The man is said to be in his late 30s and is a known alcoholic and drug addict in his community.

Lone shooter kills 3 officers in Baton Rouge A gunman killed three police officers and wounded three others in Louisiana’s capital on Sunday, nearly two weeks after the fatal police shooting of a black man there sparked nationwide protests, one of which led to the massacre of five Dallas policemen.

The suspect, described by a US Government official as having served in the Marine Corps, was himself shot to death minutes later in a gunfight with police who converged on the scene.

Two Baton Rouge Police Department officers and one sheriff’s deputy were killed, and one sheriff’s deputy was left critically wounded in what Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden said began as an “ambush-style” attack on officers.

Another police officer and one other deputy suffered less severe wounds and were expected to survive.

Colonel Mike Edmonson, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, said in a press conference that the gunman was believed to have acted alone, contrary to early reports that police may have been looking for other shooters.

Authorities did not name the suspect. But a US Government official told Reuters the

gunman had been identified as Gavin Long, of Kansas City, Missouri. He was reported by other media to have been 29 years of age and black.

The Government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said investigators have reason to believe an emergency-911 call may have been used to lure police into harm’s way.

Another Government source told Reuters that Long had been a member of the US Marines, but his service record was not immediately known.

CBS News reported he was a Marine sergeant who was honourably discharged in 2010.

Authorities declined to offer any possible motive for the attack.

And it was not immediately clear whether there was a link between Sunday’s bloodshed and unrest over the police killings of two black men under questionable circumstances earlier this month - Alton Sterling, 37, in Baton Rouge on July 5, and Philando Castile, 32, near St Paul, Minnesota on July 6.

Sunday’s shootings occurred about a mile from the Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters, where dozens of people were arrested this month while protesting Sterling’s death. The 37-year-old African-American father of five was shot and killed at close quarters by law enforcement officers.

A witness to Baton Rouge shootings, Brady Vancel, told a CBS television affiliate he had seen a gunman, a second man in a red shirt lying in a parking lot and another gunman running away “as shots were being fired back and forth from several guns”.

He said the police arrived shortly after the gunfire began.

One of the injured officers was listed in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Centre, while another was in fair condition, hospital spokeswoman Kelly Zimmerman said. The third was taken to another hospital where he was in fair condition.

Shocked community members lined the highway about a mile from the shootings, at the site of the protests against Sterling’s killing.

“It never hits home until it’s in your own living room,” said Redell Norman, an activist who attended the recent protests at police headquarters.

First Lady: Many young people need help ––says municipalities and Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils can provide solutions

FIRST Lady Sandra Granger has said that municipalities and Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils can become key partners in developing holistic solutions to target issues that impact the cultural and spiritual moorings and values of Guyana’s teens.

Delivering remarks at a stakeholders symposium held in observance of United Nations World Population Day, recently held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, the First Lady pointed out that many young people are alienated, uneducated and undereducated, and are “adrift of cultural and spiritual moorings and values”.

As a result, she said, a

multi-sectoral approach to the myriad problems facing teens

tion for future leadership roles.

The UN observance this year is held under the theme “Investing in teenage girls,” and Mrs Granger said the theme has been expanded locally to include boys, given the challenges faced by Guyanese youths.

She said careful examination should be done into how teenagers are socialized, so that holistic solutions can be developed to target issues affecting them.

“We must consider the social and economic environments in which they grow; the influences they are exposed to, and the hardships and challenges they face,” Mrs Granger said.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT “The Caribbean Devel-

opment Bank (CDB) reported last year that Guyana has a consistently high rate of youth unemployment of 40 per cent since the year 2000. It is important that a well-defined strategy be implemented to ensure that teenage girls and boys have the opportunity to become viable citizens who will both contribute to, and benefit from, the country’s wealth and resources,” Mrs. Granger said.

The First Lady also highlighted the need for investments to be made in youths through support for their families and the communities in which they live. She pointed out that municipalities and Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils can become key partners in this process.

She has also called on non-governmental and religious organisations to partner with those bodies in order to give guidance and support, thereby positively influencing the lives of youths.

The education system must cater to the needs of each child, she said, and help to nurture them into their desired career paths; and schools must be adequately equipped with facilities and staff.

FIRE FOR LEARNING “Novel ways must be found to engage them, and to light in them a fire for learning through access to information and community technologies, skills in sciences and arts, and access to technical and vocational education; knowing that they

will be able to lift themselves out of poverty and share in the good things life has to offer,” she said.

She said that health and family life education must also play a role within the school system, in communities and in social organisations.

“We, as a nation, would fail if investment isn’t made in the health and well-being of our young people who are at a difficult period of their development,” Mrs Granger said, as she encouraged adults, educators and health sector professionals to provide necessary information about sexual and reproductive health to empower teenagers to protect themselves from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

Girl tied with rope ––led along Haslington Public Road by adult; CPA launches investigation

By Shauna Jemmott AFTER receiving another complaint about a young girl being tied with a rope and led by a man along Haslington Public Road, East Coast Demerara Sunday morning, Child Care and Protection Agency (CPA) Director Ann Greene is calling on anyone with information to contact the government agency.

Green received a report from a woman who observed the disturbing and strange sight while travelling along the East Coast Demerara public road in a vehicle.

The woman complained to the CPA that a man who appeared to be middle-aged walked along Haslington Public Road holding a coarse yellow rope which was tied around the young girl’s chest area.

The woman said it was similar to the appearance of someone carrying a donkey or a cow and she became disturbed as the child seemed terrified.

The girl of African descent appeared to be between 11 to 13 years old.

She was wearing a dark-coloured knee-length dress

and had short hair. The man, also of African descent, had a slightly rusty appearance as he held the rope with the child walking on his right side around 10:15 hours.

When the Guyana Chronicle spoke to Greene on Sunday, she said the agency is concerned that many Guyanese do not understand the extent and seriousness of child abuse and so they refuse to report cases.

She said anyone with information that could lead to the successful investigation into the matter should call the Child Protection Agency hotline at 227-0979 as soon as possible. She also assured that all calls will be confidential.

Green told the Guyana Chronicle that many times people are aware that children are being abused by relatives or someone else and do not report such matters.

She said the care and protection of Guyana’s children is everybody’s business, and every Guyanese who witness or hear of a suspected case of child abuse or exploitation should take

action.

She pointed out that many people do not understand the effects of child abuse and while some may become concerned when a child suffers, to others it seems a normal occurrence and so they don’t report suspected cases.

All not well TO anyone who pays close attention to what is happening in Guyana, it must be obvious that all is not well in the society. One of the consequences of allowing a society to descend into a state of disrepair is that when a decision is taken to tackle the problem, the will to do so is often lacking. This may well be the case with Guyana.

The change of government, a year ago, brought a new sense of patriotism and purpose among sections of the society. We witnessed a spontaneous outpouring of civic engagement, which was highlighted by the clean-up campaigns around the country. Alas, one year later, that outpouring seems to have subsided, and we are back to square one.

It is easy to point fingers at the political directorate for its failure to harness and steer that new energy to a place of hope, but our problems run deep in the national vein. The last three decades of structural adjustment, imposed from outside and administered locally, have taken their toll on the country. The rapid rise of unbridled individualism, accompanied by a decline of collective commitment to community and country, has produced a changed society in which the very rule of law is compromised and national values have been discarded. Partying is now a notional priority, even as patience with reflection has waned. Young people opt out of organized national endeavours when they do not discern individual gains, and older citizens have retreated to their narrow confines.

One just has to look at the way the roadways are used to find it difficult not to conclude that civility and regard for the community are no longer parts of our national consciousness. From the minibus drivers to the commuters to the drivers of private cars, we seem to have signed on to a destiny of disorder and disregard for life and limb.

As the frequency of road fatalities rises, reckless driving has become more entrenched.

What is worse is that nobody seems to care.

There are more law enforcement officers on the streets, but they appear to be helpless in the face of the anarchy around them.

While we quote statistics to show a decline in crime, one cannot help but take note of the gruesomeness of the murders and other forms of violence that are ‘in our faces’ every day. Life has lost its value in Guyana; the threat of the sanction of the law is no longer a deterrent to crime. We seem to have given up as far as ensuring that our society graduates citizens whose respect for life is paramount.

Alcoholism is caused not only by drinking rum Dear Editor, TWO different letters appearing in the 14th July issue of both the Kaieteur News and the Stabroek News appear to equate alcoholism with the drinking of rum, as opposed to other forms of alcohol, such as beer, vodka and whisky. The letter in Kaieteur News, signed “Caribbean Voice, New York”, is titled Rum and Social Responsibilities, while the one in Stabroek News is signed

by Annan Boodram and is titled “Alcoholism is at the core of many social pathologies in Guyana”.

Both letters detail the numerous problems associated with overindulgence in alcohol. I have no quarrel with this postulation; however, to convey the impression that

it is only “rum drinking that causes alcoholism”, which is the clear slant given by both articles by implication as well as by direct statements, is wrong. As a matter of fact, their aspersion against rum versus other alcoholic drinks is tantamount to shooting ourselves in the foot. For example, sentences like “…statistics show that the Guyanese drinking culture (rum culture) where most persons ‘drink to get drunk’, frequently at excessive and harmful levels is associated with many forms of entertainment and participation in social events” clearly point the alcoholism finger unfairly at rum and rum only. Besides, such myopia and bias can be considered anti-nationalistic, having regard to the fact that Guyana Rum has captured

the world’s attention as top class; indeed, the ‘the best’ in many respects, and its contribution to our national treasury cannot be ignored.

I have no brief for the rum companies in Guyana, and I am not in any way promoting the drinking of rum; all I am trying to do is to remind our compatriots of incontrovertible facts.

Besides, I am no ‘prude’; I do enjoy a drink or more of rum, Guyana rum. As a matter of fact, my friends will corroborate the fact that when I was in the UN, and therefore entitled to duty free privileges which allowed me to buy expensively-priced wines and whisky at duty free prices, which were lower than the price payable for rum, I still drank rum. Indeed, I am often frustrated by the absence of rum

at social occasions, where it appears that rum is scoffed at in preference for vodka, whisky and beer. Only this week, at a public function attended by several dignitaries, including a Minister of Government, I openly ‘reprimanded’ the host for not having any rum but only vodka, whisky and beer.

I am of the view that Guyanese, by and large, drink much more vodka and beer than they drink rum.

Let us not denigrate our ‘national’ drink, our national product. If we must –- indeed, we certainly MUST -- attack ‘alcoholism’ and promote ‘responsible drinking’, let us do so without demonizing rum.

and City Council suffered greatly under a system of malicious and nepotistic governance, which deprived it of much-needed resources to carry out its functions effectively. And thus the Mayor and City Council was rendered hapless, though it was well aware of the needs of the citizens of Georgetown.

It is clear that, on May 11, 2015, the Mayor and City Council, and by extension the City of Georgetown, was given opportunity to finally function as an effective institution with the citizens’ interests as priority. And though there were renewed enthusiasm and willingness to revive an ailing system, revival of the system was not

without its costs. The reorientation of an institution and a society as a whole takes time, especially when the ills they face were engrained in their functioning for decades.

Nevertheless, this old order of operation must be completely removed, and a reintroduction to what is right and lawful should become the new norm.

Unfortunately, not all would agree to be rebuked for habits that are not in alignment with what is seen as just and lawful. Too many have subconsciously become cultured to what is distasteful, wrong, and in most cases unlawful, making it difficult for them to abide by what ought to be. Perhaps it may

be safe to say that old habits die hard, but they must be outright denounced and eliminated.

The M&CC has recently come under fire from many in the public for exercising its constitutional and statutory obligations. It is quite ironic that some of these same critics were condemning the M&CC under the previous dispensation for not upholding its constitutional functions and obligations. It brings to mind the old adage of “doomed if you do and doomed if you don’t”. Trying to restore some semblance of order and discipline to a city that had reclined in dysfunc-

IT IS a highly contended fact that, for years, Guyana has had innumerable economic and social challenges which have resoundingly impacted the lives of its citizens.

While Guyana is not unique in having these challenges, it is arguable that many of these were the consequences of poor political decisions and governance.

These negative implications also led to a systematic degradation of institutional functioning. One of the prime examples of this breakdown in institutional functioning is the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown. The Mayor

The recent saga surrounding the death of two young children in a drop-in centre in Georgetown must alert all of us to the urgency of now, to quote Dr. Martin Luther King. The circumstances under which the children got there, the obvious inadequacy of the facility, and the public wrangling between the family and the Child Care Agency point to a serious dysfunction in the society.

When our children cannot be guaranteed protection at both the level of the family and community, something is rotten.

The recent results of the National Grade Six Assessment exams confirm a frightening development in our country — a widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. The huge difference between the performances of students from the private schools and

their counterparts from the public schools is a reflection of the persistence of the social inequalities in Guyana, five decades after the attainment of independence. A few years ago, President Granger correctly called it “education apartheid.” Social inequality is the perfect recipe for hopelessness, despair and disorder.

It is time that our politicians on both sides of the political divide come to grips with the fact that Guyana needs repair work beyond political rhetoric. While our leaders spar about macro-economics and politics, our nation is dying at its very soul. But it’s not only our politicians who must take responsibility for our condition; the citizenry at large has to find its collective soul again.

Something drastic and intentional has to be done to pull us back from the brink.

“This government recognises the impact the young people are making and we are proud of you,” Minister Ally said, as she presented five bicycles to the top five National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) students at the Education Department, Lethem, Region Nine, on Saturday.

Delivering brief remarks prior to the handing over of the bicycles, Minister Ally said that, “We believe that there is a lot of inequalities in our society, children cannot go to school because of poverty and discrimination in some form or the other…and we are working to change that.”

From page 6 tion is not an easy task; and these critics may or may not know the enormity of such a responsibility. I dare say that they should try stepping in the shoes of the ones tasked with this job and make their judgements after.

Perhaps some, more than others, are too quick to forget the past. There was a time prior to May 11, 2015, when one could only wish that after a moderate shower of rain lasting less than 15 minutes, there would be no widespread floods across the city. Or one could only wish that there were no huge piles of garbage buildups outside the Stabroek and Bourda markets, with spillages into the streets on a daily basis. Who can recall the days when sewage and garbage would clog almost every drain in the city and overflow in the streets? Further, can anyone remember being able to see past the first row of tombs in the Le Repentir Cemetery? These are no longer usual occurrences within the city, and, as such, it shows that the Council has worked to improve the lives of residents; albeit, there is still much more to be done.

The Council has been trying, and should be commended for a decent effort thus far. However, the Council has accomplished much over the one-year period under the new administration.

These accomplishments have had even more significance and credibility with the installation of the new councillors after the APNU/AFC Administration delivered faithfully on its campaign promise of local government elections held this March.

Clearly, much effort and resources have been expended within the last fourteen months in restoring cleanliness and decency to the city. Particularly, millions of dollars have been spent on desilting canal and drains, and clearing alleyways and cemeteries around Georgetown. Many can attest to benefiting from the recently introduced green spaces set up by Council.

Of noteworthy mention is the Merriman’s Mall green recreational park.

The Council has since worked to repair a number of culverts around Georgetown, specifically East Ruimveldt, which is prone to flooding.

There has been great improvement in the management of solid waste; hardly are our main thoroughfares used as dumpsites. One can easily notice the change in how our avenues are being maintained. A quick walk down Main Street between Church and Lamaha streets will prove this. The same is true if you take a walk along Camp Street between Church and Lamaha streets. The results are evident for all to take note and benefit.

There is also the recent

move by Council to regulate street vending with the introduction of the “Parliament View Mall”, which will soon be upgraded with new tents, water and security staff. Persons can now walk freely, without encountering encumbrances on the streets and pavements. One can walk along certain streets in Georgetown without fear that a criminal element may attack and flee into the mountain of obstructions along the pavement.

Also, the Council has addressed the needs of its staff by initiating negotiations with many prominent international organisations and countries to assist in capacity building for its staff. In fact, the M&CC is currently in the process of penning an agreement with one of Guyana’s largest international donor agencies to fund the development of its Corporate Governance and Financial Management Strategy. This agreement will see the implementation of a governance framework that guides the Council’s operation and financial accountability. It also comes with the added benefit of having staff go overseas for training in these two areas.

Again, the Mayor and City Council has tarried, and has accomplished much in a short space of time; but more needs to be done in order for us to rise and regain our regional acclaim of being the Garden City.

It is true that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, and so we continue to pursue every available local, regional and international avenue to collaborate to develop the City.

Of course, like most things in life, there is the great need for adequate financing. This is crucial to ensure that the Council’s vision for a model City, both as it pertains to aesthetics and to administration, is accomplished.

This means that the Council needs to re-examine its revenue sources, since revenue now comes mainly from the collection of taxes. This is the part that brings some amount of taboo, as people often attach a negative connotation to paying taxes; but it is a harsh reality that we all must face.

For many decades, there have been several property owners who are either evading or avoiding property taxes, while the rest of the citizenry, including pensioners, carry the weight of this burden. To correct this flaw in the system, the Council will have to make the decision to have an across-the-board percentage increase in taxes for every property in the city, so a temporary correction could be in place to allow Council to do its work. There are many instances in the city where properties would have been converted from residential to commercial use, but the owners continue to pay residential rates. These are

issues the Council is seeking to address, to ensure equity in cost distribution of the vital municipal services it provides to local communities. Capturing these funds will go a long way towards improving the efficiency and frequency of services, and would provide an avenue for the Council to enhance its infrastructure in keeping with the Garden City image.

Already, efforts are afoot for the implementation of systems that will correct the abuse of public space, which leads to negative externalities to the wider citizenry. One of the newest initiatives is the application of a container fee for companies occupying the roads to park container trucks for extended periods.

These trucks not only damage Council’s property, but are, more importantly, seen as traffic obstructions which could be fatal.

Likewise, the Council is moving to institute a system where all vehicles used for public transportation will have to comply with the Municipal and District Council’s Act Chapter 28:01, Sections 301 (26) and (35), which give the Council the right to regulate such transportation.

Implementation of these regulations serves a dual purpose of garnering revenue for the Council to execute much-needed works and lending to the efforts of reducing traffic congestion within the city. Unlike what some may think, the Council is not unique in its approach to applying charges for the misuse of public

However, the Council has had its challenges as it relates to the provision of services and its general administration. However, challenges are a part of life; they help to mould us into who we later become. And as we work together, there will be instances when we all do not agree on an approach. But it would be a fallacy to suggest that a mutually beneficial relationship cannot be forged if we all are working towards the main aim of developing Georgetown. A team united must never self-destruct because of egos and selfish agendas. It is, in fact, through ‘agreeable disagreements’ that equitable solutions are most often found, so that there is maximization of benefits that accrue to all.

The Council welcomes constructive criticisms and inquisitions from the residents of Georgetown, because they are the ones we work to satisfy; they are the ones we turn up every day to serve with pride. The Council thank the residents for entrusting their confidence in us, and admonish them to continue giving us their unswerving support as we cooperate for the restoration and development of Georgetown.

AS a parent, every day counts, you really have to be on your toes. You have to be alert enough to nip any disagreeable behaviour your child may have, in the bud. You have to listen keenly to and show an interest in your child’s opinions, suggestions and their “take” on matters, so that you can either reason with them, or correct them, if need be.

An astute parent will always be one step ahead of their child’s needs, understanding them and how they think. Noticing the way they grow, the things they do and the things they show an interest in. As a parent you need to nurture their interests and talents: encourage their positive attributes and help them to meet and overcome challenges.

Guiding children by setting boundaries,

morals and values that will keep them on track, while allowing them to think for themselves, is an art that parents need to refine and maybe adjust as children grow. This combination helps to make a child self-reliant, build their self-esteem, their confidence and assists with their decision-making skills.

Parents are there to gently navigate their children through the probable pitfalls in life, to teach them a sense of reason and fair play, to be good examples for their children to emulate; to love their children and to show affection; to care for their children to protect him/her and keep him/ her safe from harm. These good parental skills should start at birth and continue all through a child’s formative years: through adolescence and beyond until the child becomes an adult.

so busy with their day-to-day lives, that they do not find time to relate to their child on a one-to-one basis, let alone find quality time to sit and listen to their child’s thoughts, or opinions. If you don’t spend quality time with your child or listen to him/her keenly, you may miss the opportunity to nip disagreeable behaviour in the bud and become aware of it only when it is already ingrained.

Parents should know their child’s, good traits and the traits their child needs to work on.

If a parent does not recognise these, then the “not so good” ones may multiply and manifest without warning. Children, at any given time, are a work in progress, your work as a parent, will bring about that progress. So spend less time on your cellphone, less time on Facebook, less time searching the net, less time watching soaps

and more time in your child’s reality. Remember their childhood is what you make it.

You can enrich that childhood by providing opportunities for activities that will broaden their minds, their outlook on life and their horizon. You can lead by example by being fair and being true to yourself, be open, be patient, be steadfast in all that is good and right for your child.

Show love and warmth, understanding and respect and they will do the same.

Robotics camp for youth to be hosted in Guyana - with support from First Lady, local sponsors, diaspora

WITH assistance from First Lady Sandra Granger and a number of local and diaspora sponsors, Guyanese youth will be treated to a robotics camp between July 21 and August 1.

The first camp will be held at the St Rose’s High School on July 21 at 10:00hrs. Additional camps will be held at St Rose’s High and the Queen’s College during the week of July 25, and others are scheduled for the Buxton and Lusignan areas during the week of August 1.

The STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) team will arrive in Guyana next week. Their first engagement will be on July 19, when they will host a workshop for community groups interested in creating STEM clubs.

That meeting will be followed by a July 20 workshop at St Rose’s High School for camp volunteers. That workshop will run for five hours from 10:00hrs.

The camp will be facilitated, in part, by two of the Christian siblings.

The U.S.-born Christian siblings- Ima, Asha, Caleb, and Joshua - have spent many summers in Guyana. Their parents, former national team basketball players Karen Abrams and Leon Christian, have kept them involved in and with this country.

Since emigrating, the Christian parents have never allowed distance to hamper their contributions to Guyana, whether through representing the country in several Caribbean basketball championships; investing in a local business; contributing to local civic efforts; or now inspiring their children to share their technological knowledge with local students in Guyana.

The husband and wife team feels a strong sense of duty to contribute to the development of Guyana.

“After Ima and Asha expressed their interest in a technology camp in Guyana, I shared the idea with the First Lady Sandra Granger during her 2016 trip to

Georgia, USA,” Karen Abrams said.

First Lady Granger reached out to the Christian parents for an update some time ago. “I was amazed at her enthusiasm and willingness to help. Her outreach sealed the deal,” Ms Abrams said in praise.

It was then that Karen phoned her friend, Dr Terrence Blackman, the chair of the Mathematic Department at Medgar Evers College, telling him about the proposed programme.

The Christian children followed in the footsteps of their parents, who worked in the U.S.’s technology industry, being exposed to Lego Robotics building as well as work with the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

“Lego Robotics is quite popular in the United States and across all levels of school from K-12 to university level,” said Ima. From While Caleb believes, “Lego page Robotics 3 is a fun and multi-disciplinary approach to teaching programming concepts and reinforcing concepts such as determination, creativity, innovation and problem-solving which young people need to be successful in all industries.”

Planning for the camp has been non-stop work, but the organising team anticipates the interaction with students and adults interested in setting up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) clubs in Guyana.

The project was generously boosted by a donation of US$8,000 contribution from the diaspora. That money was used to purchase robots and supplies for the camp.

Other contributors include Guyana’s Noble House Seafood; Backyard Barbecue and Grill; Churches Chicken Guyana; Bruster’s Guyana; Metro Office and Computer Supplies; Nigel Hughes; R&S Fishing; Lusignan-Good Hope Learning Centre; Friendship Primary School; and Herdmanston Lodge.

Both the Ministry of Education and the Public Telecommunications Ministry have lent their support to the initiative.

Karen also underscored the support of Arnon Adams, Vidyaratha Kissoon, Lance Hinds; Director of Sport, Christopher Jones; and Education Minister, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine.

In the Diaspora, Caribbean International Shipping of Lithonia, Georgia, and the New York-based non-profit organisation Guyana Action Committee were also extremely generous with their support.

Give more to Fallen Heroes Foundation –– Ramjattan urges private sector

AS several officers and officials gathered to pay homage to police officers who died in action, an appealed was made to the private sector to increase its support to the Fallen Heroes Foundation (FHF).

The gathering on Sunday at the Police Monument site, Eve Leary, laid wreaths as they remembered the fallen heroes who had loyally served the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

This year 64 officers are being remembered officially but the Force is also paying

homage to those who died on the job. According to the Guyana Police Force, since 1913, these 64 policemen would have been those killed in the firing line.

Last year, the Force remembered 62 ranks. The two new ranks added to the list this year are Antonio Dawson who was stabbed while apprehending a suspect at Gafoors Complex at Houston and Leonard La Rose who was also stabbed while arresting a suspect who was wanted for rape at Mathews Ridge.

At the remembrance event, Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud announced that the FHF has amassed $2.7 million from each divisional commander so far.

This is apart from the donations of Government officials and members of the business community.

The money, he said, will go towards helping with the education and welfare of the children of the fallen heroes.

often times go unnoticed, therefore I assure you all that there will be greater economic support to these families,” the Police Commissioner stated.

Meanwhile, he declared that it is time Guyana observed a National Day for its fallen heroes. And Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan in supporting the call, pledged the Guyana Government’s continuing support to the Foundation and praised the Police Commissioner for the initiative that led to implementation of

the Foundation idea.

However, even as the Foundation continues to amass funds for the surviving family members, Ramjattan called on the private sector to put more cash into the initiative.

“This is a larger call from beyond here to the business community and to members of the society generally that, yes, you ought to come forward to help and support so that the comfort levels of the families of the deceased are going to be lifted,” he said.

Since 2011, Digicel has decried GT&T’s 20-plus year’s monopolistic control of the sector, which the company said has not been in the interest of the Guyanese people.

More recently, in May of this year, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Digicel, Kevin Kelly, said GTT had held the nation back for over 20 years.

In one of its published handbooks on Net Neutrality, ‘What is the best approach for the Caribbean?’ which is available online, Digicel argues that developing any strategy in respect of “Net Neutrality” can only be done when policy-makers and regulators have a clear policy framework and policy goals to test whether any proposed approach is actually fit for the purpose and deliver the maximum overall benefits to the various stakeholders based on the actual conditions in their local market.

Some of the policy questions that Digicel believes need to be clarified before a “Net Neutrality” approach can be developed and decided on include: do we want to maximise broadband connectivity?; do we want to maximise Internet usage?; the extent to which inclusiveness is a goal; do we want to encourage network investment?; do we believe that the commercial benefits of the converged Internet should be concentrated or distributed?; and the extent to which different services and service providers (both traditional and converged) need or should

be protected.

The handbook goes on to state that “Net Neutrality” discussions in the U.S., the EU and elsewhere have been high-profile and there might appear to be an urgency for regulators and policy makers in other regions to do something or risk being left behind.

However, the Irish-based company argues that this isn’t the case. Digicel reasons that the fact that there is such debate going on, even in economies that have been considering this for some time is an indication that the matter is far from straightforward and that no one has started to gain an advantage.

MUCH TO GAIN “In fact, the Caribbean region has much to gain by adopting a more considered approach, as there is time to see where the various debates lead and to analyse the specific policy goals and challenges Caribbean markets face,” the handbook said.

The handbook also pointed out that any intervention will have long-term effects. The extra time taken now to craft the best possible approach will be repaid many times over compared to a sooner but less appropriate (and perhaps even damaging) decision.

As such, Digicel contended that for developing countries, any disincentives to operator investment would have serious consequences. The company also referenced a recent article in Forbes magazine,

which noted that “If Net Neutrality is bad policy in a developed economy, it is nothing less than outrageous in a developing one, which has yet incipient networks and a lot of rural areas to be covered. Net Neutrality rules obliterate the incentives to innovate and expand networks.”

However, when contacted for a comment on whether the company has reservations with the term net neutrality being included in the bill, Digicel’s CEO Kevin Kelly did not respond to questions put to him through the company’s Public Relations Officer.

On the other hand, GTT sought to reaffirm its commitment to serving the people of Guyana, when quizzed on its ability to provide high-quality services to compete with potential service providers.

Asked whether GTT has reservations regarding aspects of the bill, the company responded, “GTT is reviewing the bill and awaiting an opportunity to engage in contractual negotiations. GTT is very supportive of liberalisation and is excited to bring new and exciting services to Guyana.”

GTT also said that it will continue to position itself to be a winner in the market as they look forward to seeing a level playing field and ensuring that the rule of law is respected.

When asked specifically if the company is pleased with the bill in its current form, the service provider responded, “We are eager to engage GoG [Government of Guyana] on liberalisation.”

Just recently, customers were com-

plaining that Digicel had blocked GTT’s Mobile Money Guyana service from running on their network, and at one time, blocked the Mobile Application from running.

Subsequently, GTT reportedly censored a website by redirecting traffic (users) who were trying to access http:// digicelgroup.com to GTT’s website.

According to one Information Technology (IT) expert, this move sets a dangerous precedent, since it has the potential to muzzle anyone who disagrees with the company.

“Hopefully, the Government doesn’t condone this behaviour as that would tell me much about them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister Hughes said that she was unaware of additional concerns outside the net neutrality issue, if there were indeed any, given the fact that she was not part of the Special Select Committee.

The minister said though that she is confident that the bill is one which is designed to benefit all of Guyana.

“I am confident that the bill will be good for the telecommunications sector in Guyana. Digicel and GTT will have issues with aspects of the bill, but we think that there were enough consultations and everything that was said and proposed were taken into consideration at the level of the select committee. We have a bill that [is] going to benefit all of Guyana, not just one company or one stakeholder,” she said.

–– but much work to be done, says NA Mayor REITERATING that much was done to bring flood relief to the citizenry of New Amsterdam, Mayor Kirt Wynter noted that “the task is an uphill one, with much more to be done,” as he marked 100s day in office last Saturday.

Wynter, in an exclusive interview with Guyana Chronicle, used the opportunity to call on New Amsterdamers to support the Council’s initiatives by giving their full cooperation and assistance by clearing their immediate surroundings, inclusive of the front drains, which would allow the township to return to its former glory.

“We are off to a good start, but I am not satisfied,” Wynter said. “I am proud of what we have achieved. The

town had been neglected. We have focused on the drainage system, as the drains were heavily. We managed to clear the main drainage. The water now recedes faster after heavy rainfall. I am pleased but still not satisfied.”

“There was a lack of machinery, finance and human resources -- we found it was somewhat challenging. But with the support of private businesses and citizens there has been relief, especially in the vicinity of the Berbice High Court and State House, along with Vryman’s Erven, Bermine Housing Scheme and Tucber Park areas.”

“Flood relief is yet to be achieved in Stanleytown as there is heavy siltation at Lot 51 outfalls which drains

the Republic Road Canal, and a similar situation is faced at the Old Smokey outfall which is responsible for drainage along Strand Road and Philadelphia Street.

Both kokers have rotting doors which result in seepage,” the Mayor said.

“Apart from that we have commenced breaking illegal parapets and pavements, which businesses have constructed along Strand Road on the Government reserve. It is important that we access the drainage system which was filled with sand used during a construction exercise.

There are instances where businesses have removed their property lines over the interlock drains.

SANITATION “Currently the Council is facing a challenge of offering an efficient service of garbage collection, due to an electronic glitch with the garbage dumpster.

However, we have acquired a tractor and trailer along with some bins, which are currently utilised, and we are optimistic that two additional trucks will be garnered, with one being sourced and modified to aid in garbage disposal, after we would have received our $16M subvention. The additional vehicles will assist residents in the Glasgow New Housing Scheme and the East Bank areas which are under the watchful eyes of the municipality, along with some of the wards in central New Amsterdam.”

During the period under review, the Mayor, accompanied by the town’s Health Inspector and other municipal officials, made visits to all the eating houses/restaurants and caterers in the town, resulting in the temporary closure of two Chinese restaurants. However, routine inspections are being undertaken on a quarterly basis.

Commenting on the sewage disposal of the recently opened ‘Eclipse’, an entertainment business in the township, the Mayor said that strict adherence to the building code was observed.

However, with several complaints being made by nearby residents, the health and building inspector is expected to revisit the location shortly.

CATTLE IMPOUNDING Motorists and road users have been relieved by the absence of animals on the roadway, mindful that the presence of cattle and other domesticated animals have resulted in the loss of life and property.

“This is a town and we cannot tolerate cattle along the roadway, but in the meanwhile we have found an alternative.”

During the interview, the Mayor urged cattle owners to alleviate their burden of paying high impounding fees by keeping their animals away from the main thoroughfare.

“I am aware that’s it’s their livelihood. So we have encouraged them to temporarily curtail the movement of the animals to designated areas, north of the National Insurance Scheme and the Mayor and Town Council Housing Scheme, which have idle lands that can facilitate grazing grounds for the animals.”

THE BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE OF SUDDIE THE quiet village of Suddie, once the administrative centre of the Essequibo Coast, has a long history that dates back to the Dutch occupation of Essequibo.

Today, a prominent feature of the village is the Suddie Hospital, the main hospital on the Essequibo Coast.

The sprawling hospital complex, which houses a public health building, a health centre and a rehabilitation centre, was built around 1840. Prior to becoming a health centre, it used to house a huge building that overlooked the mighty Essequibo River.

In those days, the building served as a fraternising club for the major estate owners, and they would usually meet there every month end to drink intoxicants or sip coffee while taking in the cool sea breeze and admiring the beautiful shoreline.

According to Isahak Bashir, an elderly resident on the Essequibo Coast, the area that is now called Hamburg Island was located

east of, and close to, Suddie; but during a 200-year period, erosion pushed the island some one-and-a-half miles away, and in the process created a beach that was a major resort up until the 1960s. The beach has since been washed away by the Essequibo River.

In the days of the Dutch planters, the plantations owners who used to socialise at the club house reportedly used to relax on the verandah and enjoy the scenery at the beach.

Unlike the other estates on the coast, which produced cotton and sugar, Suddie was known to produce coffee and cocoa.

In 1835, the Portuguese came to these shores from Madeira as a substitute to the slaves, and were distributed to several estates on the Essequibo Coast. About 30 of them were posted to Suddie. They worked on the coffee and cocoa estates, and were also involved in the production of honey;

but they were not able to cope with the horrid working conditions, and as a result, many died.

Then Governor of the Essequibo Coast, Henry Lyte, in 1841 established a committee to investigate the living conditions of the Portuguese, and found that they were indeed living under severely harsh con-

ditions, which contributed to the decline in their population.

Over the years, the Portuguese worked hard and developed themselves.

Many of them went on to become shrewd business persons. Guan Fernandes, a Portuguese, built the first general store at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast.

Sunny Lord, the Gomeses, the Mendeses and the Bellames are among the prominent citizens who also contributed to the development of the village.

Bashir related that the village is known for the medical services it provides to the Essequibo Coast and Pomeroon.

The Suddie Police Station and the mango tree which is said to be over 100 years old vivors of the generation of elderly persons would be familiar with Dr. Gillette, Dr Whaling, Dr Asregadoo, Dr Muchenagumbo, Dr Gladstone Mitchell; and, more recently, Dr Rama, all of whom have provided yeoman service to the region.

Aside from the hospital, Suddie is home to a post office, a police training school, a magistrate’s court, a High Court, schools, religious institutions, shops, and a police station.

Prominent in the compound of the police station is a mango tree which is said to be over 100 years old. The tree provides shelter for those waiting to see family members or friends who have been admitted to the hospital.

Bashir related that, in

years gone by, Amerindians who visited hospitalised relatives would rest under the tree and, on occasions, would miss the bus, but they used to be given shelter by a very kind Portuguese woman named Hilda Ferreira.

Suddie is one of the less rustic villages on the Essequibo Coast, and most of its residents work at the Government offices, while a few engage in cattle rearing aback the village.

Following promulgation of the 1980 Constitution, a regional government system came into being, and Suddie was soon after relieved of being the administrative centre of the region.

Those duties were shifted to Anna Regina, which became a town in 1990.

At 98, Joomrathan is still going strong –– credits longevity to God; dhal and rice and ground provisions

AT 98, Joomrathan Mohabir is frail but still active, and is hoping that Allah The Merciful will grant her her wish to attain the magical hundred before He calls her from this earthly realm.

The lot 11 Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast resident, who has outlived two husbands and broken up with another, is mother of three children, all girls, two of whom are twins. She is being cared for by her daughter Shirley, 63, who is one of her twins. Her other two daughters: Shanta, 63, the other twin; and Sheela, 69, live in neighbouring Suriname.

Even at her age, Joomrathan moves about freely -- with the aid of a cane. She makes her own bed, and bathes and eats without any help.

Joomrathan Mohabir visited her home, that her mom, due to her age, does not hear clearly, but does not suffer from any medical complication.

Joomrathan, who greeted the Guyana Chronicle with a robust “Good afternoon”, credits her longevity to “plenty dhal and rice, ground provision and achar”; and most importantly, to God, whom she said wants her to live that long.

The elderly woman related that her mother was from LBI, East Coast Demerara, and her father came from India to work at the LBI sugar estate; but, for some reason, he ended up being posted at Wakenaam, Essequibo Island. She could not remember exactly how her parents met, but presumed that their marriage was arranged, which was the norm in those days with East Indian families.

But she recalled that she was born in Wakenaam, met her first two husbands at Wakenaam, and all of her children were also born there.

In her younger days, Joomrathan related, she used to look after cows and work in the rice fields; and when she attained 13 years of age, her father ‘married her off’ to a policeman: Bholi Bisoondial, whom she said was in his 40s. In those days, policemen enjoyed a level of prestige in society, and, according to Joomrathan, young girls were not allowed to disagree with their parents. As such, she had no choice but to agree to the marriage, but went to live with her husband when she turned 14.

She recalled that all was going well until she found her husband to be unfaithful; and being greatly upset about the situation, she left him.

A few years later, she met her second husband, Pancham Latchman, who was a rice miller from Su-

riname. She bore him her only three children.

RETURN TO GUYANA After years of fruitful and productive relationship, Latchman passed away from a heart attack when aged 65; and with his passing, Joomrathan returned to Guyana to live with her mother, who lived at LBI. While in Guyana, she did domestic work to take care of her young daughters; and it so happened -- either by luck or chance -- that her brother was getting married at

Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, and she went with the baraat (wedding procession). During the celebration, she met her third husband, Parmanand Mohabir, a rice farmer and resident of Cotton Field, and soon after, Joomrathan moved in to live with him there.

The elderly woman described her third marriage as blissful. But on a fateful day 20 years ago, bandits invaded their home, and Parmanand suffered a severe beating; and not long after, he died from a stroke See page 18

Defying tradition to realise her dreams

DR AFARAH KHAN is a gritty young lady who sets ambitious goals for which she pours her heart and energy out into achieving, even if it means coming

up against a mountain of odds.

A resident of Charity on the Essequibo Coast, she is currently the acting Regional Health Officer of Region

Two, a post she has held for the past year.

Khan, who is from a humble background, attended the Anna Regina Multilateral School; and upon

graduation, set her sights on making her childhood dream of becoming a doctor a reality. She was, however, faced with a major stumbling block: her parents, tradi-

Dr Afara Khan tional East Indians, wanted her to marry and start a family soon after finishing school. Khan was defiant, and having achieved good grades at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, applied at the University of Guyana (UG) to pursue an Associate Degree Programme in Pharmacology, and her application was approved.

She was overjoyed at hearing the news, but her parents were not happy, because they did not even know she had applied to pursue studies at UG and was successful.

She pleaded with them, and eventually they listened to her and agreed that she would further her studies.

Khan successfully completed her studies and returned to the Essequibo Coast, where she worked for three years as a pharmacist.

Time was going and her parents were pressing her to marry; and one day, while running through the daily newspapers, she saw an advertisement on the Guyana-Cuba scholarship programme, and she applied and succeeded.

The good news caused a great uproar in her family; but Khan, who dearly loves her family, knew what she wanted in life and was prepared to give no ear to their disappointments, while, at the same time, she remained astutely respectful to her parents.

After much disagreement and debate, she related, she informed her family that if they don’t approved of her going to study medicine in Cuba, she would go on her own. Again, they eventually agreed, but with great reluc-

tance.

Khan related that notwithstanding their disappointment, her parents gave her their full support during her studies in the Communist State. In 2009, she successful completed her studies and returned to practise medicine in Guyana.

Today, her parents have not regretted their decision, and are proud of her achievements; and equally so now that she is married.

Dr Khan is urging parents to make their children’s education a top priority, and she is urging young girls to qualify themselves academically before getting married.

“It is empowerment. It will help you to take care of yourself and children if you have to move on from an abusive relationship; and it will help you to better support your family if you are living together, and (you can) make a solid contribution to society,” she told the Guyana Chronicle.

Dr. Khan intends to further her education. She plans to specialise in the field of Public Health Management, since her new role is centred on management.

On a daily basis, she oversees management of the Charity and Suddie hospitals, the 11 health centres, and 20 health posts in the region.

Dr Khan says she enjoys helping persons who need help, and feels a great sense of satisfaction when they recover from their various illnesses.

This young doctor is advising young people to dream big in life.

“It does not matter where you come from, go after your dreams!” she urges.

DIVERSIFY TO SURVIVE –– prominent Essequibo businessman urges rice farmers

LOW prices for rice on the international market have, for some time now, been testing the resolve of local farmers; but some have been up to the challenge, opting for diversification to stay in business.

Aside from low prices, lack of market and unfavourable weather have been taking a toll on the industry, forcing farmers throughout the rice belt to scale down on production. From the look of things, unless Guyana can lo-

cate a lucrative market as the one it once enjoyed with Venezuela, prices would increase only if one of the big rice producing countries suffers a natural disaster, rendering it temporarily unable to meet market demands.

Ramotar’s rice field, which is being cultivated once every year Some farmers on the Essequibo Coast appear to understand the gravity of the situation, and are taking steps to secure the survival of their business, for which their families have been a part for generations. They related to the Guyana Chronicle that the road to survival requires a four-step approach: (1)

able to cut back on the money I spent on fertilizer, because the cows grazing on the land have contributed significantly in keeping the land fertile. This also, in turn, has resulted in a higher quality and yield of paddy. This is how I managed to be still producing rice. With farmers getting low prices for their

The seasoned businessman also noted that it is time farmers stop ‘shying’ (planting) paddy manually in

Roopan Ramotar, a farmer for more than 20 years, related that soon after the price crunch began to bite, he changed course and adopted a new approach to rice farming. He no longer cultivates 500 acres of rice twice per year as he used to do before; instead, the businessman now divides his rice land between cattle rearing and rice cultivation.

And this is done on a rotational basis: 250 acres one crop for rice and the remaining space for cattle; these areas are switched around the next crop.

“In this way, I have been

I will launch the Roster Brand and do all I can to make it a brand name on the market,” an optimistic Ramotar said, as he overlooked his coconut estate at Caledonia from a resting house there.

Caledonia is some 20 miles in the Lower Pomeroon River. On the estate, some 500 areas of coconuts (three years, five years and bastard -- a mixture of three- and five-year plants) are under cultivation.

On another 100 acres sits a young cultivation of plantains, which was being attended to by Ramotar’s workmen.

Businessman Roopan Ramotar futile, and Ramotar seems to have given up on getting any help from the region.

He has since come up with an innovative strategy to get the work done. He has put several of his cows close to the canal, and the bovines appear to take great pleasure in feasting on the vegetation in the canal under the brilliant sunshine.

The animals have managed to clear a sizable portion of the weed-infested area, much to the satisfaction of Ramotar, who said, “I had to find some way or the other to get it cleared; business has to go on.”

And to keep business going and growing, he is urging the Government to establish a pasteurization plant on the Essequibo Coast, to boost the dairy industry there.

A portion of land on Ramotar’s rice field is also utilised for banana cultivation and rearing of tilapia; and nearby is his coconut factory, which has been completed.

SNAG But the factory has been unable to go into operation, since the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is

yet to install electricity to the building, even though he applied for same some three months ago.

The businessman told the Guyana Chronicle that he has already paid for the instillation, and is pleading with the Government to look into the situation.

“The coconuts in my estate are ready to be picked.

I have had to sell them out to other producers on the Essequibo Coast who are supplying overseas markets.

What’s happening is really a great discouragement to an investor,” he said.

When the factory opens, it will provide direct employment for 20 Essequibians, and many more jobs indirectly. In the meantime, Ramotar has been busy negotiating with overseas dealers to buy his Roster Pomeroon Fresh Coconut Water when it is launched.

It has not been easy going, he said. Most of the dealers want him to ‘co-pack’ (package the coconut water under their brand); but, he said, he would not be falling for this trap.

“There is some danger in this. If the dealer finds a producer who produces at a

Joomrathan was 65 then, and her daughters were all grown up. All her husbands had been Hindus and she had assimilated the Hindu culture; but she found something in her life was missing. She was originally a Muslim before her marriages, and on Parmanand’s death, she made a decision to ‘return’ to Islam, where she remains to this day. She also chose to stay with Shirley and have Shirley take care of her.

Shirley told the Guyana Chronicle that she

loves her mother dearly; and in her younger days, she used to help her stepfather -- who had no children and treated them as his own -- in the rice field.

The only thing she said she was saddened about was when she was pulled from school at age 13 -- not because of poverty, but because in those days the tradition in the Indian family was that girls must not go far in school; at a very young age, they were to marry and take care of their husbands, children, and in-laws.

CARIBBEAN HEAT: the place for clean entertainment

THE Caribbean Heat Hotel, Restaurant and Bar is the number one spot for clean entertainment in the township of Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast.

The bar is located in the Anna Regina Market access road, and in one of the liveliest places for a family get-together in the quiet township.

Owner of the facility, Ghandi Gossai, a Canadian remigrant, told the Guyana Chronicle that he established the business for one of his sons, but unfortunately the son died in an accident before the business opened. The death, he said, caused him to remain in Guyana; and it seems like he would remain here for a long time, since management of the enter-

At the Caribbean Heat Hotel, Restaurant and Bar, patrons can listen to the best Indian filmi music — the blasts from the past and the past; Soca, Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae, Rock and Chutney; while looking at cricket or a movie on big-screen television. And all dishes are served: from mouth-watering curries to wild meat, with the exception of beef and pork.

Patrons are not allowed to fight; argue in anger; swear ‘on the tops of their voices’; or enter the bar without a shirt, or while wearing slippers. “Once they can comply, they can enjoy themselves at Caribbean Heat Hotel, Restaurant and Bar,” Gossai, popularly called “Guss”, told this publication.

He manages the business with the help of his wife, a son, his daughter-in-law and three staff, and they are all courteous and helpful.

According to the businessman, generally, business on the Essequibo Coast is not bright; but business is not bad at Caribbean Heat Hotel, Restaurant and Bar. “To maintain customers, I’ve cut the prices for beers, foods and the hotel; so I have managed to maintain most of my customers, plus I get new people every now and then,” he said.

The spot where the business sits was an abandoned land with a hotel. Gossai, two years ago, purchased the land and invested some $25M in renovating the hotel and building the restaurant and bar.

He said family members and friends in Canada want him to pay them a visit, but to do so now would be very tough. “Even my former boss recently called me and told that my job is still there when I ready to go back,” he said as he rushed to attend to a patron.

Tiger Island, or Hamburg

Emancipation Day celebrations on Hamburg Island

THERE were three estates on Tiger Island, also known as Hamburg. Those three estates were Sopienburg, Hamburg and Hoff-Van–Holland. There were, in the past, little estates known as Hamburg.

Between the original Hamburg and Hoff-van-Holland, there lies a strip of provision land named ‘Gudio’. It belonged to another proprietor.

Hoff-van-Holland is now used as a grazing ground for cattle on the island.

“Wee” Watty Russell, in the late 1900s, owned and managed Sophienburg estate. His production was as follows: sugar crop of 92 tons sugar; 17 puncheons of proof rum, and 98 caskets of molasses. Watty’s estate, house and workplace were pleasantly situated on the southern end of the island, with a fine sea beach of glittering white sand running around and forming the border of Tiger Island. The sand which lies around the windward side formed a road for a splendid trail all the way to Hoffvan-Holland.

Watty’s morning routine began with the 6 O’clock coffee. Thereafter, he would stroll, in a very light costume, to the stelling, where he would plunge into the black water of the Essequibo river to give himself zest for the day’s work. Wee Watty had immense size and was powerfully built. He would take a concoction of fine, rich milk directly from his cow into a glass already charged with a small dram of wholesome old rum and a spoonful of sugar. This beverage was far superior to the medicinal ‘Yankee Cocktail’ of the present day.

His stock had to be examined: fowls of rare breed with a thriving colony of chicks in all ages. His duck pen had a variety of the most splendid birds: Muscovies, black and white in all their purity; English Mallards were in abundance; and, above all, a cross-breed of Muscovy and Mallard -- a squab looking bird with the choicest pieces of duck meat.

A small quantity of maize was given to the sheep before they left the pen. In front of the pen door, he would lay out a sprinkling of tempered lime, which was used to prevent foot-rot, a disease which was very prevalent in the moist soils. In a separate pen was his fine Southdown ram. Only his young and healthy ewes were used for breeding, the old ones were sold off to butchers.

Watty was great at sheep management. Not far from the sheep pen, there were untidy logies where some labourers made their beds with cane trash. The cow pen was under some fine shady trees on the beach, the cattle were carefully scanned to see all was at hand, they ate the guavas which had fallen during the night.

The untimely death of ‘Wee’ Watty Russell threw Sophienburg into the market, and it was sold for a trifle to Mr G.P.Watson, a Georgetown merchant who had sometime previously purchased the sequestrated estate, Hamburg. The whole of Tiger Island then consisted of one estate, except the strip of land known as Gudio.

During Mr Watson’s lifetime, the estate was a muscovado one. In 1842, the acreage cultivated under cane on this island was 584 acres, and 197 acres were uncultivated. There was a population of 159 creoles, mostly of African descent; 11 ‘others’ and 541 immigrants, and the estate produced 990 tons of sugar.

The Island of Hamburg in the Essequibo River, during Wee Watty Russell’s time, measured in excess of 24 square miles; erosion has now reduced it to about 16 square miles. In the foreshore of Tiger Island, you can see washed out cane beds, cemetery, and an old koker structure, even on the beach. Erosion is not a new phenomenon, and providing the cycle is in retreat, the new generation on Hamburg Island has to be on guard to avoid being at the mercy of the sea.

Many farmers in the Pomeroon are in the habit of disposing of coconut shells and husks in the river, which not only creates an ugly sight but impedes smooth transportation on the water top.

The Pomeroon community reportedly has the best coconuts in the world. In the Pomeroon alone, there are about 20,000 acres of land that can be cultivated with coconuts, producing an estimated 140 million nuts per year. And at $50 per nut, it is a $7 billion enterprise waiting to be tapped; and this does not include the value-added industry of the coconut, which includes coconut oil, craft, and coconut water.

The worth of the value-added industry is estimated at about $7 billion, most of which can come from the sale of coconut water.

It is estimated that the demand for coconut water grows at between 50 and 100 per cent annually. Globally, the coconut water industry is worth US$1 billion, and the product is on its way to becoming the world’s most popular drink.

‘Investing in Teenagers’ forum held UNITED Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin has urged governments to invest in the empowerment of the country’s teenage girls as a push towards achieving gender equality.

In delivering her World Population Day message at the Stakeholders Symposium on Investing in Teenagers, hosted at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre on July 11, Osotimehin said this investment should be in a way that ensures them equal opportunities and the power to influence community development.

She said this should be in ways that empower them to make important life decisions and equip them to one day earn a living, engage in the affairs of their communities and be on an equal footing with their male counterparts.

Such investments are also needed to protect their health, including their sexual and reproductive health, and as opportunities for a quality education, expanding economic opportunities, including those for decent work. Osotimehin said an empowered teen whose rights are respected and who is able to realise her full potential is more likely to contribute to the economic and social progress of community and country.

“The teenage years are for some girls a time of exploration, learning and increasing autonomy. But for many others, it is a time of increasing vulnerability and exclusion from rights and opportunities, or just plain discrimination,” she explained.

She said any teenage girl who has the power, means and information to independently make decisions, is more likely to overcome obstacles standing between her and a healthy, productive future, not only to benefit herself, but also her family and community.

One who has no say in decisions concerning her ed-

ucation, health, work or even marital status, “may never realise her full potential or become a positive force for transformation in her home, community and nation.”

In some parts of the world, she said, “A girl who reaches puberty is deemed by her family or community as ready for marriage, pregnancy and childbirth. She may be married off and forced to leave school. She may suffer a debilitating condition, such as fistula, from delivering a child before her body is ready for it. She may be denied her human rights.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally, said government should see investment in children

“Guyana needs every single child or teenage boys and girls to thrive in order to support a future of high productivity, innovation, economic growth and improved social cohesion.” Minister Ally as a necessary and moral requirement for creating an enabling environment to accommodate sustained and equitable long-term growth of our nation.

“Guyana needs every single child or teenage boys and girls to thrive in order to support a future of high productivity, innovation, economic growth and improved social cohesion.”

With this in mind, she said Guyana must never grow weary of highlighting the importance of investing in

its children, and must seek to establish policies and programme-oriented goals to facilitate the development of the children’s full potential.

“Interventions and policy choices made today will determine whether our children and teenagers are able to reach their full potential, or are left to face a future of inequity and marginalisation,” Ally said.

A socially cohesive society can only be built on investment in youths.

The minister explained that since families are the Minister of Social foundation of communities, Cohesion, Amna Ally there is a clear tie between cohesive families and cohesive communities. Strong family ties can be an effective source of civic cohesion.

“The family is the first institution to teach “habits of the heart” and discourage the worst excesses of individualism by emphasising responsibilities to others.

Ideally, children develop a sense of how to establish positive relationships, their rights and duties,how to function and acquire essential life skills by seeing how their parents react to them, to any siblings, to each other and to other members within communities,” Minister Ally said.

CCJ reducing paper use in judicial process ––President Sir Charles Dennis Byron PRESIDENT of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Sir Charles Dennis Byron has informed participants of the Hague Convention Conference that the CCJ is in the final stages of developing programmes that would reduce the use of paper in judicial processes throughout the region.

“That [programmes being developed] would facilitate that process in domestic

jurisdictions throughout the region, so it’s something that we would like to encourage acceptance to,” Sir Byron said.

The three-day Hague conference on private International Law concluded last Friday.

He explained that the CCJ has tried to eliminate or reduce the use of paper in the judicial process by allowing all matters to be filed

“In our situation, part of the reason for it had to do with expedition and cost, so for example, if we were receiving pleadings say from Belize, several copies would have to be made and sent to us by courier, then you have the process of the registration, and it being returned by courier and then you’ll have the cost involved in arranging service… we have seen bills where the service of a document has cost litigants US$30 to 40,000 and the whole service process has taken a number of weeks including the process of courts,” Sir Byron explained.

He added that by implementing those measures, the CCJ has eliminated the cost of filing and service, reducing it to zero and reduced the time to five minutes.

“So we think there are many advantages to be

gained from pursuing this process.”

Former Home Affairs Minister of Guyana, Justice Stanley Moore, said that Justice Byron illustrated and demonstrated one of the essential pre-requisites of a modern progressive judicial system.

“That is to say we are in the new electronic information age and therefore we need to make use of all the latest electronic devices. We have to keep up with modernity, we cannot be neo-luddites (used to describe those who are anti-technology).

Therefore I believe that in the future, the discussion which we are now having will be a matter of history because the new norms will be the use and the availability of all the latest technological devices available to court systems throughout the world,” Justice Moore reasoned.

Bahamas claim double CBC U-16 crowns

-females cop gold to join the men

By Daniel Haynes TWO certainly beats one and the Bahamas have copped not one but two Caribbean Basketball Confederation U-16 Championship gold medals when their females joined the males and secured gold last Saturday night.

The game finished 55-50 being close all the way to one

minute left with Suriname trailing by two points. However quick scoring and clutch free throw shooting by the Bahamians saw them holding it out to end the game.

The game was by every standard what should have been played in a final with both teams trading buckets.

However it wasn’t that way with Bahamas jumping out to a quick 13-4 lead with 5 minutes left in the first quarter.

Suriname jumped back into the game under the scoring or Mirelva Marica who got them on a 7-0 run to finish the quarter 13-11 with Suriname down 2.

Yasir bowls Pakistan to victory over England at Lord’s (REUTERS)-Pakistan foiled a gutsy England run chase to win a gripping first Test by 75 runs at Lord’s yesterday.

Having set the hosts a 283 victory target after their second innings was ended on 215 in the morning, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by leg spinner Yasir Shah, provided a masterclass to bowl England out for 207.

Mohammad Amir, back from a five-year ban for spot-fixing, sealed victory when he clean bowled Jake Ball.

England had never chased down such a total at Lord’s and while Jonny Bairstow was at the crease they appeared to still have a chance but he was undone by Yasir when he was two short of his half century.

The end was nigh after that as the final three wickets went down for 11 runs.

Pakistan’s players celebrated victory by doing press-ups in front of their jubilant supporters.

“It is one of the top wins as captain and for Pakistan as a team,” captain Misbah-ul-Haq said. “I am very proud of the team and the way they came out and showed really good skills.

“I always thought we were two wickets behind where we wanted to be.”

Alex Hales soon followed his captain to the pavilion after top-edging Rahat to Mohammad Hafeez before Rahat removed dangerman Joe Root for nine after he played a careless pull shot and was caught in the deep by Yasir.

On a wearing track, Yasir Shah delivered the goods for the visitors as he added four wickets to his six in the first innings to end with a match-haul of 10 wickets - his maiden in the Test format.

Shah took his 10th wicket in the match when Woakes was caught by Younus before Amir finished it off.

“It’s really frustrating but we’ve lost before,” Cook added.

“We can bounce back.

Earlier England quickly polished off Pakistan’s second innings with the visitors adding only one run to their overnight total of 214.

Wicketkeeper Bairstow had faced criticism on Saturday, but he got rid of Yasir (30) with an athletic one-handed catch in the first over as Broad became the third English bowler to take 350 test wickets.

Downhill master Pantano wins stage 15, Froome retains yellow

(REUTERS)-Colombian Jarlinson Pantano showed he is a master of the descent as he claimed his maiden Tour de France win in yesterday’s 15th stage, while overall leader Chris Froome enjoyed a relatively quiet day in the saddle.

Pantano outsprinted breakaway companion Rafal Majka (Tinkoff) of Poland at the end of a 160-km trek in the Jura mountains to give his IAM Cycling team, who will be folding at the end of the season, a first victory on the Tour.

“I dreamt of this all my life, I’m so happy,” said Pantano.

“Majka had won several Tour stages (three) and I was wary of him in the finale but I had good sensations. I knew that if

I was catching him in the descent I’d have a good chance to win.”

Briton Froome retained the overall lead after his Team Sky easily controlled feeble attacks from top-10 riders Fabio Aru, Alejandro Valverde and Romain Bardet.

Frenchman Bardet’s attack, however, hurt American Tejay van Garderen, who lost 1:28 to the leading riders and slipped from sixth to eighth overall as his hopes of a podium finish in Paris took a serious knock.

Froome leads Dutchman Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) by 1:47 and third-placed Briton Adam Yates (Orica-Bike Exchange) by 2:45.

At the front of the main pack, Astana’s brutal acceleration set up an attack by 2015 Vuelta champion Aru in the last climb.

Bardet (AG2r-La Mondiale) then attacked near the summit and while the move did not threaten Froome, it was fatal for Van Garderen, who is now 4:47 off the overall pace.

Today’s 16th stage is a 209-km ride from Moirans-en-Montagne to Bern.

The peloton will then enjoy a rest day before the final week in the Alps.

Record-breaking Stenson lands first golf major at Troon

By Tony Jimenez TROON, Scotland, (Reuters)-Record-breaking Swede Henrik Stenson became the first Scandinavian male to capture a major when he won the British Open golf yetserday, beating Phil Mickelson in an extraordinary final-round duel.

The world number six produced a swashbuckling eight-under-par 63 to finish 20-under on 264, three ahead of playing partner Mickelson (65).

The 40-year-old Stenson’s round equaled the lowest in any major championship and his winning total was also a record for any of the ‘Big Four’ tournaments.

“Wow, this will take a little while to sink in,” said Stenson as he held aloft the coveted Claret Jug. “I’m still

BIRDIE BARRAGE The Swede’s response was instant and emphatic as he birdied five of the next seven holes, making a complete nonsense of gusts of up to 25mph on the windswept Ayrshire coastline.

Five-times major champion Mickelson, however, refused to be cowed and an eagle three at the fourth followed by a birdie two holes

later meant he was only one behind at the turn.

The putts continued to fall at the 10th as both players birdied yet again.

The 46-year-old American, bidding to become the oldest winner of the Open in the modern era, leveled again at the 11th when his title rival three-putted for the second time.

As the wind died down and the sun made a rare appearance, Stenson delivered the coup de grace with a hattrick of birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th giving him a two-shot advantage with two holes to play.

Mickelson’s last chance came and went at the 16th when his eagle putt just missed.

Stennson, full of adrenaline on the 18th tee, hammered his tee shot 310 yards down the fairway and was mightily relieved to see it

stop 12 inches short of one of Royal Troon’s fiendish pot bunkers.

He safely found the green with his approach and rolled in another monster putt to complete victory and post the 29th round of 63 in major championship history.

“I knew he wasn’t going to back down at any point and in a way that makes it easier,” said Stenson. “I knew I had to keep on pushing, keep on giving myself birdie chances.”

Mickelson, who beat Stenson into second place when he won the 2013 Open at Muirfield, was generous in his praise.

“It’s disappointing to come in second but I’m happy for Henrik, he’s really a great champion,” said the left-hander. “We’ve been friends for some time.

“I’ve always thought he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him. I knew he would ultimately come through and win.”

Misbah hails ‘remarkable turnaround’ PAKISTAN captain Misbah-ul-Haq said it had been a “remarkable turnaround” for his team after they secured a 75-run victory at Lord’s, six years after leaving the ground in disgrace following the spot-fixing scandal.

On a gripping fourth day, Pakistan surged to victory with four wickets in 31 balls after Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes had threatened to work their way towards the target of 283.

They celebrated with push-ups and salutes on the outfield, a further nod to their pre-series boot camp with the army in Pakistan, after Misbah had marked his century in the same way on the opening day.

“We always believe that

if we cross 300 we have a chance, especially in the first innings, because we have a top spinner. And in the fourth innings when the pitch dries up they can put pressure on the opposition, the quicks are so good with reverse swing, and they can make it really difficult. They proved it today.”

And on his own performance, where he followed the hundred with a duck, he said with a smile: “It happens sometimes, you live by the sword you die by the sword. You have to back yourself. This is how you score a hundred and sometimes a zero.”

GFF hosts Transfer Matching System workshop for member associations THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF) on Saturday hosted a one-day seminar to sensitize member associations about the FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS).

According to a release from the federation, this workshop which is the first of two to be conducted, was held in the Boardroom of the GFF and was facilitated by Ian Alves, Director of Competitions (Guyana Football Federation).

Alves pointed out that the key objectives of the session included introducing the FIFA TMS to participants (background, rationale and objectives),as well as demonstrating

how to use the system via practical sessions.

He added that the expected result is “for clubs and associations to be better able to participate in and execute their transfer engagements.”

This first workshop catered for 11 participants from the eight elite clubs drawn from the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) and the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA),and had a total of eight attendees.

The successful participants will be registered with the FIFA TMS which will

allow them to have a user account. The system allows one user per Club and two users per Association.

The current transfer period will conclude on July 31 this year, and to facilitate this process, the release pointed out that the GFF has made available personnel to assist associations and clubs from June 1, 2016,to the conclusion of the transfer window; Monday – Friday from 15:00hrs – 16:00hrs and Saturday from 10:00hrs – 12noon respectively.

The GFF said that FIFA has implemented the International Transfer Matching System (ITMS) to ensure transparency and accountability in the international transfer of professional players among clubs / associations worldwide,and in order for a player

to transfer cross-border to play professional football, the player’s new club and his previous club have to submit certain information and documentation into the ITMS. Only when this information is complete and crosschecked for accuracy, will the ITMS generate an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) which permits the transfer of the player’s registration from one country (member association) to another.

Jamaica’s shot put champion Odayne Richards, ramped up his preparations for the Olympic Games winning the men’s shot put with a throw of 20.78m. He was

the only thrower over 20 metres at the meet.

Meanwhile, Megan Simmonds, Jamaica’s national champion was third in the 100-metre hurdles in 13.18, her first loss since winning the national title on July 2. The race was won by Great Britain’s Cindy Ofili in 13.11. Raven Clay of the USA was second in 13.16s Simoya Campbell was a disappointing fifth in the women’s 800 metres in 2:02.76.

GKC celebrates a decade of service

“MY motivation was to build a Karate College for the Children of Guyana and my mission is to guide young people in the right direction to keep them off drugs, off the streets and to help them break the cycle of violence through karate ethics.”

These were the words of head of the Guyana Karate College(GKC), Master Frank

Woon-a-Tai, as he joined karatekas, senseis, well-wishers and others on Friday evening to celebrate a decade of The Guyana Karate College.

Delivering the feature address, Sensei Woon-ATai, an 8 th Kyu Black belt, continued, “Those ethics are character, effort, etiquette, discipline and selfcontrol. In its 10 year, the GKC has produced more than 200 black belt(ex-

ponents) of varying degrees.”

From humble beginnings, sensei Woon-a-tai spoke of where the club was founded 10 years ago, under the bottom house of close friends to when it got registered in 2006, to where it is now.

He noted that during the 10 year stint, the dojo had moved to several places, but there was always a plan to develop a home for the club.

. The body was granted a portion of land in 2006 by then President Jagdeo,with further approval from the Lands and Surveys commission in 2011, and given the title to the said plot of land in Liliendaal in 2012.

The club has completed the foundation and is currently working on raising funds to complete the dojo.

Also present at Friday evening’s ceremony was Minister within the Education Ministry, Nicolette Henry, who posited that the discipline of the college must be of a high standard for it to have survived for such a long period.

“I can see that these principles (ethics) are intrinsic to Guyana Karate College. The

rounded focus and dedication of individuals your college has produced is testament to your vision on structure,” Minister Henry said.

Among the evening’s events were testimonials from several of the college’s current students and senseis,as well as a dance, a poem and several karate demonstrations.

T&T crowned WICB Under17 champs

By Brij Parasnath in Trinidad & Tobago WEST Indies youth player Kirstan Kallicharan slammed an attractive 87 and sparked Trinidad and Tobago to the West Indies Cricket Board Under-17 title when they defeated Barbados by 35 runs in their final encounter at the famous Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair, Port of Spain, yesterday.

T&T maintained their unbeaten streak and regained the title they won in the inaugural series in 2013. Guyana also remained undefeated when they registered a convincing 60-run win over dethroned champions,Windward Islands at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva, just about the same time that the Trinidadians were celebrating at the Oval.

But Trinidad and Tobago,who started the match with 14.3 points ahead of Guyana on 14.1 points,secured the overall title with a slightly better point aggregate in the six-team round-robin series.

T&T collected four

points for the outright victory,plus 0.3 for the three wickets by the medium pacers,while Guyana received four points for the outright win plus 0.1 bowling points for the one wicket by medium pacer Jones.

In the overall tally, Trinidad and Tobago emerged as the new champion with 20.6 points while Guyana finished as runner-up with 20.3 points.

After being sent in to bat first, Trinidad and Tobago responded to the challenge and amassed 238 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs.

Skipper Kallicharan found his best form for the series and shared two important partnerships that propelled the home team to a challenging total. Together with left-handed opener Navin Bidaisee, who made 35, they added 69 for the third wicket.

T&T had lost two early wickets with the dismissals of Leonardo Francis for zero, caught Sian Brathwaite off the bowling of Jamali Lynch, who also prised out the prolific Cephas Cooper, adjudged LBW for two runs.

Lynch had struck two crucial blows with the third ball of his first over and the second ball in his next over, and left T&T in some bother at 12 for 2 after 3.2 overs.

But skipper Kallicharan put his stamp on the match with positive strokeplay, and he then found an equally determined partner in Matthew Patrick ,who also found his best touch for the series. Together the added a further 105 for the fourth wicket stand that placed Trinidad and Tobago in charge at 186 for 5 after 44.1 overs. Matthew’s invaluable contribution

included two sixes and two fours off 55 deliveries,before he was run out for 67.

Kallicharan was the main architect of the batting,and he stroked six fours off 141 balls,until he was the fifth wicket to fall at 228 for 5.

Leonardo Julien was unbeaten on 21 when the innings closed at 238 for 5.

Kallicharan also had an economical spell of 6-1-211,to add to his match-winning 87 and was easily declared “Player of the Match”.

Pakistan’s entire squad in bizarre celebration on the Lord’s outfield PAKISTAN pulled off an unlikely first Test victory over England at Lord’s and then produced one of the most bizarre celebration routines you are ever likely to see on a sporting field.

The entire squad formed two lines in front of Lord’s famous Pavilion, and then proceeded to embark on a choreographed (sort of) push-ups routine.

It probably didn’t rival Iceland’s ‘Viking Thunder-Clap’ celebration from Euro 2016 for spine-tingling inspiration, but it was definitely entertaining as the tourists revelled in an against-the-odds 75-run victory.

Guyana beat USVI 1-0 Rain hands T&T Women’s Super50 title TRINIDAD and Tobago claimed the Regional Women’s Super50 title after the final against Barbados was abandoned without a ball being bowled yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground.

The game was called off at 14:00hrs, after the umpires deemed the ground unsuitable for play..

However, based on the competion’s rules, T&T was adjudged the overall winner after they ended the preliminary round with the most points.

A solitary conversion by Joshua Ferreira in the 12th minute proved to be the match winner for Guyana’s U-17 footballers against their USVI counterparts at the Lionel Roberts Stadium in St Thomas, USVI yesterday.

The young Guyanese dominated possession throughout the battle but failed to capitalize on the numerous goal -scoring opportunities.

Most attempts went wide of the goal or were denied by the brilliance of the home side’s goalkeeper.

Speaking to Chronicle Sport via telephone after the match , team Manager Carlos Bernard stated that is was a disappointing result as the aim going into the game was to score about ten goals after seeing Antigua and Barbuda easily score five against them in their opening match.
