Holmes Trujillo Garcia, at the Ministry of the Presidency. Later Mr Garcia met with Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister,

Dr Karen Cummings at the Marriott.

During the discussion the two spoke about security, at the Venezuelan border, Guy-

ana’s booming oil and gas industry and the opening of a Colombian embassy here in Guyana.

Water flows in several EBE communities THE communities of Hubu, Naamless, Parika and some ten other villages are now set to receive high pressured, better quality tap water after the Guyana Water Incorporated on Thursday commissioned the rehabilitated Hubu Well Station and the Naamless Distribution Network on the East Bank of Essequibo.

Costing approximately $2 million to rehabilitate, the well will also serve the communities of Bartenstein, Blake, Grove Park, Hyde Park, Lookabu, Lookout, Mora, Salem, St Lawrence and Unity. Those communities were previously receiving water via the Vergenoegen well, and that resulted in severely low water pressure.

For many residents, with this project coming on board, it was the first time, in a long time, that they had water coming through their taps.

“I actually had to fetch water from my neighbour and have a shower over at my neighbour, because they are on the southern side of the well that used to get water certain times of the day. But as of yesterday I am getting full pressure and I am no longer going through that stress,” commented 50-year old Clyde Matthews, who re-migrated to the village of St Lawrence last February.

noted that the well coming on stream, along with other developments on-going in the communities, in that area,

is testament to the government’s commitment to bringing the good life to all Guyanese. Similar sentiments were

expressed by Region Three Regional Executive Officer, Jennifer Ferreira-Dougall.

“President David Granger

often says he is promising a good life, water is one of the components of the good life and now it is in Region 3 in this community. I must say thank you to Dr. Van West Charles and his team for the great work they are doing not only in Region 3 but all over Guyana,” Ferreira-Dougall said. Initially built in 1981 the Hubu Well had been operating intermittently over the years due to issues with the standard of water produced. “[The Well] has good production, it produces a lot of water but GWI recognized that it had a quality issue, so this time we didn’t just re-activate a well for good pressure, we re-activated the well with some treatment.

So this time we would not only give the customers water with high pressure but the filters we put in place means the water will have good pressure and quality,” explained GWI Regional Manager, Denise Woolford.

The reactivation of the well was brought about through the efforts of Ministry of the Presidency, Head of the Migration Office, Aubrey Norton. Norton related that it was mid 2018 that then Minister of State, Joseph Harmon sent him into the community to meet with residents and see what could be done to improve their lives. “Last year July Minister Harmon had asked me to do some work

in this area. We met with residents and we committed to help; we started in front by helping them to drain it. We met again and we were discussing what were the major problems in the community and they said the next thing they wanted dealt with was water,” Norton explained.

Norton immediately reached out to Managing Director of GWI, Dr. Richard Van West Charles, who got to work on addressing the issue, birthing the idea to re-activate the Hubu Well. “I decided to come and see what we can do and indeed we had a meeting and consulted with Denise and her crew.

We discussed this issue and made a commitment to have the water here. I think what is important to note is the commitment of your government to address the inequities wherever they are,” Van West Charles noted.

“We are moving apace in different parts of the country to address this issue. It’s not simply a matter of rights but it speaks to the issue of your health.

So we are looking at many, many communities.” Giving remarks on behalf of the community was Lionel Seepersaud, commonly known as “Uncle Archie”, who profusely thanked the Ministry of Presidency and the GWI for their tangible gesture.

Construction works on Leguan Stelling to restart soon CONSTRUCTION works on the new Leguan Stelling are expected to re-commence in one month’s time, while works to ensure that the dilapidated structure remains operable until then are ongoing.

This was the message of Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, on Thursday. At the time, he and a large team from the ministry were meeting with residents of the Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) island community.

The meeting was hosted at the Guyana Sea Defence Department in Leguan, where several residents saw their queries being addressed on the pressing issue.

Addressing the delay of the project head on, Patterson informed residents that the project’s completion date was recently revised due to initial challenges. He explained that concrete piles were first test-driven at the location

which showed that longer piles would be needed and posed the first challenge. In addition, during attempts to progress with the project it was pointed out that the contract stipulates that the timber piles needed are to be supplied by the Transport and

Harbour Department rather than the contractor.

The minister indicated that a total of 152 timber piles are required and that the ministry has since reached out to seven suppliers to obtain quotes for the piles which should be acquired within a

month’s time.

Following the acquisition of the piles, the project will recommence and will be completed in two phases, Patterson noted.

Phase one will result in the placement of timber piles which is expected to last for

three months and phase two will see the construction of a new concrete section of the stelling which will be completed in the first quarter of 2020.

The contract for the stelling was awarded in 2018 to local resident, Kalan Maraj, at the sum of $413M. It will see the stelling’s existing gantry and runway being rehabilitated with timber, while other portions will be constructed in concrete.

It will take on similar features to the modern Bartica Stelling which includes a commercial area for vendors and consumers.

Speaking with the newspaper on the sidelines, Leguan Community Development Officer (CDO), Amjad Shaw, said that residents will be very appreciative of the stelling upgrade. He said that the structure has not only been an eyesore, but a safety hazard over the years. "We inherited that stelling. It’s

in bad shape because, in my personal view, they should look at construction works of more of a concrete nature that is more lasting. Most of the piles have become barnacle-eaten and it has caused massive dislocation of some of the piles. Some of them are completely gone and it makes the structure itself very vulnerable," he explained.

The CDO also underscored the importance of the stelling to the livelihood of residents in the community.

"The stelling is an important means of getting to and from in terms of transportation. It’s the only access that we have to get on to the island and for goods and services. So, it is a very essential service,” he said.

Gov’t unveils development package for Leguan

A ONE-MEGAWATT (1 MW) solar farm; LED lights; improved sea defences and upgraded roads are just some of the planned infrastructure projects for the island of Leguan in the near future.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, and a team from the Ministry visited the island in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/ West Demerara) on Thursday and spoke to these and more.

The visit to the island took place as Minister Patterson made good on a promise to a group of Region Three residents who requested the same at the government’s multi-ministry outreach to Lenora in April.

Meeting residents along with Patterson at the Guyana Sea Defence Department at Leguan were: Permanent Secretary (ag) Geoffrey Vaughn; Chief Sea and River Defence Officer, Kevin Samad; Chief Roads and Bridges Officer at the Work Service Group (WSG), Ron Rahaman; Electrical Engineer, Du-Wane Downer and Community Organised for the Restoration of the Environment (CORE) Coordinator, Charelene Garraway.

In his opening address to the residents, Minister Patterson announced: “I have slated here, under the Guyana REDD?plus Investment Fund to put a 1 MW solar farm in Leguan slated to start this year. We’ll be doing one in Wakenaam as well.”

He stated that the move is geared towards boosting energy provision on the islands.

He also informed residents that there were 47 street lights from the Ministry in Leguan and they would be replaced with LED lights while another 53 will be given to the community. The residents applauded when Patterson stated that these will be completed by the end of July and community members will be engaged in determining which areas have the greatest need of the lights.

In addition, 20 solar-powered street lights are to be placed in appropriate areas while the Ministry’s LED Replacement Programme will see the replacement of incandescent bulbs with LED lights to save energy.

He added that the Ministry, through its capital projects and maintenance programme, annually expends over $200M in sea defence works.

Nandram told the newspapers on the sidelines that since 2016 the Ministry had expended in excess of $300M towards road improvement and development in Leguan covering almost 8 miles of the road-network on the island. Speaking on the similar topic of roads, Patterson took the opportunity to plead with residents to care the infrastructure and desist from damaging the roadways with agriculture machinery.

Continuing the engagement, one woman by the name of Rehanna raised the issue of having to pay an exorbitant fee for a post for street lights at her residence.

She was able to receive a response on the spot from a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) representative.

Another resident spoke to the issue of drugs being brought to the island on speedboats which Patterson assured is a matter which will be brought to the attention of Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan. Several other residents, before leaving the meeting, were eager to tell of how much the engagement meant to them.

“Minister Patterson promised me at the government outreach at Leonora that he was going to hold a community meeting [in Leguan] to highlight the challenges in Leguan like our stelling, roads, sea defences and those kinds of things. He came and, for me, it was a surprise,” said Hans Buer, a German national who has been living on the island for two years.

Building strong families

I

nternational Day of Families was observed on Wednesday under the theme “Families and Climate Action: Focus on SDG 13”. The 2019 observance focused on families, family policies and major SDG 13 targets, which include: improved education, awareness-raising, human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning. SDG 13 target 13.2: also speaks to integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.

The United Nations says that although families all over the world have transformed greatly over the past decades in terms of their structure and as a result of global trends and demographic changes, the United Nations still recognises the family as the basic unit of society. The International Day of Families, the world body says, provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them.

Here in Guyana, there was no major public event, but no doubt, government has recognised the important role the family plays in the overall development of the nation.

Society is comprise of families and is what the heads of families make it. Out of the heart are “the issues of life”;

and the heart of the community, of the church, and of the nation is the household. The well-being of society, the success of the church, the prosperity of the nation, all depend upon the family influences.

The elevation or deterioration of the future of society will be determined by the manners and morals of the youth growing up around us. As the youth are educated, and as their characters are molded in their childhood to virtuous habits, self-control, and temperance, so will their influence be upon society. If they are left unenlightened and uncontrolled, and as the result become self-willed, intemperate in appetite and passion, so will be their future influence in molding society. The company which the young now keep, the habits they now form, and the principles they now adopt, are the indexes to the state of society for years to come.

It is said that the family in which the members are polite and courteous exerts a far-reaching influence for good.

Other families will mark the results attained by such a home, and will follow the example set. New York psychotherapist and parenting coach, Tamara Gold, observes that the family is “profoundly important to the developmental, emotional and cognitive growth of a child,” and pointing to “our first teachers,” she says that “a child will learn about

relationships, manners, self-esteem, worth and loyalty, all by watching and participating in family.”

Parents teach a range of values to their children, often indirectly, by first living those values as children learn much more from what you do than what you say. Parents also teach values by how they handle disagreements and conflicts, what boundaries they set, and being respectful and helpful to others. In addition to being your child’s first teacher, a parent is also his personal coping skills consultant. In nurturing family relationships, you help to lay the foundation for all other relationships. Children learn to trust others and cultivate friendships that set the scene for satisfying personal relationships later on in life. The role which a family must play in a child’s development, puts enormous pressure on families to ‘get it right’ and this may be more challenging in the Guyana’s context with a growing number of single parents, particularly among our womenfolk. In this light, it is relevant for the administration to consider and develop a major public policy initiative that will promote family life education in a systematic, multi-media programme for young adults countrywide, as well as make adequate provision to formalise life-skills education in the school system.

Mr. Editor, if I fail to respond to this falsehood and not seek to correct it, I would be neglecting my moral duty and bring the office of the Chief Parliamentary Counsel into disrepute. During the attorney general and minister of legal affairs’ tenure, I have never been abused as was stated in the letter. On the contrary, Mr. Williams and I have a very cordial working relationship which allows for the efficient running of the Drafting Division. The attorney general and minister of legal affairs has always supported me in my work as Chief Parliamentary Counsel and has

been a consummate professional. It is Mr. Williams who recommended me for the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH) and in fact, held an appreciation for me at the Chambers recognising my contribution to legislative drafting in Guyana.

Mr. Editor, this falsehood has made me anxious that it could possibly be entertained and believed by the people of Guyana and more particularly, the Head of State. I considered my name mentioned in this letter to be an attempt to cause disharmony to the normal, cordial working relationship between the Hon. Attorney General and I. wish to provide clarity and context to the statement from the Ministry of Public Telecommunications that the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) CEO (sic) did not heed the recommendation and apply for a position in the Telecommunications Agency (TA).

On March 27, 2019, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Telecommunications (PS, MoPT), along with officials of the TA first met with me and then the staff of the NFMU to officially announce the dissolution of the NFMU (on May 10, 2019) and positions within the TA which were of likely interest to the NFMU staff.

As Managing Director of the NFMU (at the time) and given my 20 plus years of regulatory experience, one of the questions I asked the PS of the MoPT, was “Do you see a role for me in the TA?” His response was, “I need to discuss this with the minister.” After some discussion on this response, it was agreed that we would meet in two days. When we met on March 29, 2019, the PS of the MoPT informed me that he had not had an opportunity to discuss the matter with the minister. To date, the PS of the MoPT has not indicated if he has since had that opportunity to discuss the matter with the minister.

During a brief discussion with the Director, Telecommunications Agency on May 10, 2019, the possibility of me having an engagement with TA was raised. This is currently being explored.

e live in a world today that is slowly trying to eradicate the biasness entwined in our culture from many years ago, a culture that did not accommodate the advancement of technology, ideas and societal norms. However, it appears as though when we try to instill certain values in our children’s minds, there are still persons who would love to follow the backward thinking of our ancestors.

I refer to an article posted in the Kaieteur Newspapers on May 15, 2019 with the caption ‘Gay Teen granted bail on simple larceny charge’.

My first thought was that this is ludicrous. Is it suddenly right to single out a young man and his sexual orientation because he committed a crime? And then there’s the underlying suspicion that probably eats away at me the most. Is this particular newspaper trying to point out that because the young man is gay, he is automatically scandalous?

What do you think this does to the LGBTQ community?

Might I remind you that as the press, freedom of speech goes a long way. But apparently Kaieteur Newspaper’s editor lacks the empathy which can totally hamper someone’s mental health. This young man has committed a crime and we acknowledge that. But what gives you the right to expose his sexual orientation in the media in such an unthoughtful way?

I’m asking them; kindly rectify your future articles to show some more respect for the LGBTQ community that already has enough on its plate. We don’t need you to be fuelling the fire that already burns with hatred.

ATTORNEY GENERAL, Basil Williams and Chief Parliamentary Counsel, Charles Fung-a-Fatt have both repudiated claims in an unsigned letter which sought to accuse the former of a series of issues including poor relationship with his staff.

The seven-page letter, which has been copied to President David Granger was released on social media by PPP backbencher Nigel Dharamlall. In a swift response to the missive, Williams, in a statement posted on his facebkook page, accused the opposition of being behind the “mischief” asserting: “it’s clear that the criminous PPP/C has been severely hurt by my assertion of the correct history of their recent 23 years in government- massive corruption, extra judicial killings, dictatorship of the Judiciary, narco-state, corrupt ministers and other officials all resulting in a failed state, a pariah state. “ Williams said the opposition has decided to retaliate by a cowardly unsigned letter.

“Now why if you're speaking the truth would you be afraid to affix your name to your allegations? It’s quite simple you have a lot more to hide which you know Basil would surely reveal. I have practised law for over 32 years; no allegations of bribery of police, witnesses, jurors, magistrates or judges were ever leveled against me.”

Williams added that as a minister equally, “no allegations of corruption are made against me. Money has never been my motivation. Unlike certain PPP/C ministers I have not pillaged taxpayers’ money in all the permutations.” Williams said the simple truth is that the PPP/C has always recognised him as a formidable opponent who cannot be easily surpassed. “I reject out of hand the fake news of their newly acquired advisers.”

Touching on the state of affairs of his chambers, Williams said that, on assuming the office of AGMLA, he met very corrupt practices but largely in the advice and litigation department where the State lawyers attend Court.

“Contrast with the lawyers in the Parliamentary Drafting Division who do not attend Court. In the latter division there has been only one resignation.” According to the unsigned letter some 19 lawyers have resigned from the chambers since Williams took

office. However, on checking, some of the staff who actually left had either retired, found higher paying jobs, promoted to judge and magistrate and ventured into private practice.

Others who had allegiance with former AG, Anil Nandlall, moved into his chambers.

Williams continued, that the Advice and Litigation Division at the chambers in 2015 was characterised by gross incompetence, negligence and sabotaging of government's cases. “There was evidence of money laundering cases wherein the state was sued for hundreds of millions of dollars and the case settled months later without a hearing. All the cases where the state was sued for hundreds of millions and even billions of dollars were attended by sudden loss of brain power to the detriment of the state. Most of these cases were inherited from the PPP/C government and were lost because of incurable defects,” Williams stated.

He said he introduced stringent anti-corruption measures and brought in the police to investigate a number of these cases and a number of lawyers left as the government's interests were now being safeguarded. He added that the former AG was snared in the new measures and charged for stealing law books. “As a result efforts have been made to bear false witness against me in the hope that they can resume the purloining of government assets if I'm removed. It’s pathetic that the call is not for investigation for corruption, bribery, kickbacks or conflict of interests but for employees seeking refuge in flight.”

CLAIMS DEBUNKED BEFORE Additionally, the issue of staff leaving the chambers was dealt with in a press release from the chamber on February 6, 2017. In that release Williams himself had responded to former President Donald Ramotar who had raised allegations that the AG had “fired, harassed and forced to resign” many persons since taking office.

Williams then detailed the circumstances under which the persons Ramotar referenced parted with the chambers.

I repeat same here for easy reference.

•Indira Anandjit (Former Permanent Secretary, Legal Affairs Ministry)-She was sent on administrative leave following the discovery of millions of dollars’ worth of law books and computer parts authorised by her for purchase but not being found in the Ministry. Her contract was not renewed.

•Sita Ramlall (Solicitor General, Legal Affairs Ministry) -retired at age 65.

•Prithima Kissoon (Deputy Solicitor General) was dismissed for breaching the public service rules and was also embroiled in allegations of mismanagement of cases against the state before the courts.

•Cecil Dhurjon (Former Chief Parliamentary Council, Legal Affairs Ministry)- Mr Cecil Dhujon was given a three-year contract by the Hon. Attorney General Basil

Williams and resigned for medical reasons.

PERFORMANCE Regarding the performance of the chambers the AG had responded to this late last year providing data that out of the 277 cases that were concluded in 2017 118 were dismissed or discontinued; 110 were won with and without costs and 68 were lost. Altogether, in 2017 some 388 court matters engaged the attention of the law officers of the state and 552 new matters were filed against the state from January 1 to December 3, 2018 taking on a grand total of 940 matters, engaging the chambers. Magda Pollard laid to rest

WOMEN activist, Magda Pollard, AA, CCH was laid to rest following a moving service at the Smith Memorial Congregational Church on Brickdam, Georgetown.

In attendance were President David Granger; First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger; Minister of Public Health, Ms. Volda Lawrence and Minister of Public Telecommunications, Mrs. Catherine Hughes. Also in attendance were: former Prime Minister and Mayor of Georgetown, Mr. Hamilton Green and Chief Justice (ag) Mrs. Roxane George -Wiltshire.

A former principal of the Carnegie School of Home Economics from 1957 to 1978 and Women's Affairs Officer at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat between 1980 and

1991, Pollard died last week Thursday. The honoree of the fourth CARICOM Triennial Award for Women was born in 1931in Buxton, East Coast Demerara (EDC), to parents Fitzgerald and Muriel Pollard, both of whom were teachers.

In her teenage years, she attended The Bishops’ High School where she excelled academically, actively participating in music, drama and community service. Before leaving school, she was awarded the Fidele Collier Medal for her significant contribution to the school’s ethos. Pollard later moved on to write the Oxford and Cambridge Examinations in 5th form and the London Higher School Certificate.

She then decided to enter the field of teaching. Four years

later, she left for London to attend the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science where she

received training as a Grade One teacher.

She eventually went on to gain a distinction in her Post-

At the same time, the Public Infrastructure Ministry has also hired an Independent Supervisory Consultant Firm, through which residents can raise concerns should they witness inadequate construction works being conducted. One resident, Jainarine Nandram, told the Guyana Chronicle that in 2018, the stelling was in such a dire condition that during low tide vehicles could not disembark the ferry due to the shaking infrastructure.

Valerie Rodway honoured with commemorative stamps THE Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) launched commemorative stamps on Thursday to honour the late renowned Guyanese musician, Valerie Rodway, on the occasion of her 100th Birth Anniversary.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes,, speaking at the simple launch held at the National Library, indicated that Valerie Rodway belonged to the cadre of Guyanese women whose endeavours have made an indelible impact on the country.

“I’ve always known that Guyanese women are special.

Our nation’s history has been printed with some very remarkable achievements from some small women who’ve done great things with their lives,” she said. “We continue to remember them, to celebrate them and their work which has brought us to where we are today.”

Speaking specifically about Rodway, Hughes

reminded of the woman’s unending love for Guyana and for music. Importantly, Hughes underscored that in the 1960s, Rodway helped to usher in the period in Guyana’s history where National songs were ubiquitous.

A life that stands out as a phenomenal guyanese woman,” she said. And as such, she expressed appreciation that the woman was being honoured in this manner. Postmaster General of the GPOC, Karen Brown, indicated that

Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six), and is best known for her composition of national songs and other melodies. Kanaima, Hymn for Guyana’s Children, Arise Guyana and Guyana the Free are among some of her more popular works.

She also put to music, the famed Guyanese Independence poem by Martin Carter, ‘Let Freedom Awaken’.

SEVERAL boys of the Juvenile Detention Centre and the Sophia Special School were, yesterday (Thursday, May 16, 2019), reminded that, even after mistakes are made, there still remain opportunities for them to reform, and productively contribute to society.

The challenge to the youth was made at a forum, in celebration of World Day of the Boy Child, held at the Sophia centre compound.

Founder of reMan, Alvin Doris, noted that the world is acknowledging that young men go through a lot that lead them to making mistakes in life, and more needs to be done. “It is established globally that the boy child is afflicted by all kinds of debilitating circumstances that take them off course from progressing to success. One of these things is poverty, which is associated with lack of male achievement and lack of education. As such boys by and large have turned to crime and violence as a means of survival. So we understand that we have a responsibility to create an opportunity for you,” Doris told the young men.

Austin spoke of how several aspects of the Caribbean culture and its expectations and messages to young boys work to lead them down the wrong path, rather than

uplifting them. “One of the main challenges of a boy growing up in the Caribbean is how to be accepted in the society. In the Caribbean you have to be tough and rough and be in with the crowd.

There is this phenomenon that the boy who would get the respect is the boy that is the roughest and if you’re not that type you face being rejected. So we have violence becoming fashionable and accepted,” Austin pointed out.

The brainchild of Trinidadian, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, WDBC was first observed on May 16, 2018, to highlight and open discussions on the many challenges faced by boys. It functions in complement to the International Day of the Girl Child celebrated since 2012 on October 11. Guyana is one of several countries that celebrate the day.

“We have to ask ourselves why it is important that we focus on boys. The fact remains that you are losing in every department; at university the girls are graduating in far larger numbers than boys, the girls are miles ahead of you,” Austin told the young men gathered at Monday’s event.

This year the WDBC is being celebrated under the theme “Supporting our boys, reclaiming our heritage”.

“We focus on the boy because the boy invariably will become the man, will become the husband. Will lead in creating families.

Whether you like it or not you’re going to become a role model. That is why today the focus is on you,” Austin said.

East Canje woman found hanging THE lifeless body of 39-yearold Zoreena Ramalla, a housewife of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice, was discovered suspended from the rafters of her modest two-storey wooden home just after 15:00hrs on Wednesday.

The discovery was made by her common-law husband, Ameer Nandkumar, aged 29, a labourer.

According to him, Zoreena had two great loves: Rum and drugs, and this was the cause of many of their arguments.

He said that as had by

Reports are that apart from the rope burns around her neck, there were no other marks on her body as to suggest foul play.

The body was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where her death was confirmed.

A post mortem examination will be conducted shortly, as investigations continue.

Gov’t grants duty-free concession to 300 teachers

THREE hundred teachers drawn from all across the country are to be granted duty-free concessions.

The concessions will be for vehicles with capacities of up to 1800cc, outboard engines of up to 75hp for persons in the riverine areas, and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) for eligible persons in the hinterland.

This is according to Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon, who made the announcement at Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency.

Harmon said that the granting of the concessions was a follow-up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), following a strike last year by teachers.

He said that among those teachers who will be eligible for such concessions are heads and deputy heads of Grade A and B schools, and headteachers of Grade C, D and E schools who would have served three consecutive years in those positions, or

are about to do so since taking up those appointments.

Concessions will also be granted to all senior masters and Heads of Department (HODs) and Grade II Lecturers of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), and technical schools who will have served in those positions for six consecutive years.

He said that a total of 100 persons have been selected for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, and another 100 will be deemed eligible for concessions for each of those years.

Eligible persons must be members of the GTU for no less than three years, and must have at least three years of service remaining.

A breakdown of eligible persons by region is as follows: Region One (Barima-Waini ) 1; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) 24); Region Three (West Demerara-Essequibo Islands) 58); Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) 41); Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) 18); Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) 48; Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni) 7; Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) 2; Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo)3; and Region

Last year, teachers across the country went on strike weeks before the new school year began in September, cit-

ing the need for an increase in salary among other conditions of work. Following back-and-forth issues, the two sides met with President David Granger, and further negotiations led to the ending of the strike.

Subsequent negotiations between the GTU and the Ministry of Education led to the teachers receiving the requisite increases.

Guyana, Colombia discuss oil, border security

SECURITY at the Venezuelan border, Guyana’s booming oil and gas industry, and the opening of a Colombian embassy here in Guyana were top items up for discussion when Foreign Affairs Minister, Karen Cummings, welcomed her Columbian counterpart, Carlos Holmes Trujillo Garcia, to Guyana on Thursday.

Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown, and were able to discuss other areas of mutual interest and cooperation between the two countries.

Furthermore, the inaugural CARICOM-Colombia Ministerial Meeting, scheduled to be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on June 29, was also expected to form part of the discussions.

Before the start of the meeting, Minister Cummings told reporters that she was happy that the two countries are continuing to collaborate

since they established ties in 1970. It is hoped that an existing joint commission between the countries will be resuscitated, she noted.

“We’ll be speaking on technical cooperation in terms of security cooperation; also with our public service, the Spanish course; and academic mobility,” the minister said.

According to the Colombian minister, his government is open for cooperation on border security as it relates to issues surrounding Ven-

ezuela. “That is why I am here as well. We are going to speak about security cooperation… which has to be kind of tailor-made security agreements. That is one of the issues we are going to touch upon,” he stated.

He said the reason for his visit is to deepen and strengthen the bilateral relationship between the countries, which can also include the opening of a Colombian embassy here.

“Because of some physical constraints that we have

“We are open to explore rooms for cooperation in that field,” he said, adding, “We are going to speak about bilateral trade, economic, and cooperation issues. We have a very

wide and complete agenda that we would like to develop with the authorities here.”

Miner accused of killing employee acquitted A 50-year-old former mining operator was, on Thursday, acquitted of a murder at the conclusion of the trial in the Demerara High Court.

Rajesh Roopnarine called ‘Popo’ was accused of killing one of his employees back in 2014. Justice Navindra Singh freed him due to a lack of sufficient evidence stemming from poor police investigation.

Roopnarine, formerly of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, was accused of killing David Campbell on December 6, 2014 at Mabura, Upper-Demerara River.

The High Court trial commenced on Thursday morning before a 12-member jury and concluded three hours later following the testimonies of several witnesses.

According to reports, Campbell was a chainsaw operator and worked at the mining camp Roopnarine operated. On November 30, 2014, Campbell was set on fire while in his hammock, after consuming alcohol with his colleagues and Roopnarine. Campbell sustained third-degree burns about his body and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but died on December 6, 2014.

House passes Bill to help empower small businesses … to get at least 20 per cent of state contracts

THE Procurement (Amendment) Bill was passed in the National Assembly on Wednesday to address some of the deficiencies within the Procurement Act of 2003, however, with that Act being dubbed highly deficient, Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, told the House that it would need to be repealed.

This bill will pave the way for small businesses to be given preferential treatment for certain procurements. Once the Bill is assented by President David Granger, Part II, Section 3A (1) would mandate procuring entities to procure only from small businesses approved under the Small Business Act, goods, works and services as specified by regulations made by the minister with the advice of the Public

Procurement Commission or the National Board.

Additionally, the Bill, once brought into effect, will mandate the National Procurement and Tender Administration to maintain and keep updated in a registry, a register of bidders.

“Every supplier or contractor shall apply to be registered as a bidder in the register of bidders in order to participate in procurement proceedings at least seven days before taking part in any procurement proceedings,” a section of the bill states.

Minister Jordan told the House that the current Procurement Act of 2003 came into effect in June 2003, following the repeal of the Procurement Act of 2002 – after being enforced for only one year.

Prisoner recaptured after escaping police custody LESS than twelve hours after he escaped from police custody at the Cove and John Police Station Thursday morning, rape and robbery accused, Kevin Wilkinson, was re-arrested.

The man, according to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, was recaptured in an alleyway, after he attempted to run away from the police when they showed up at his sister’s house. Upon seeing the lawmen, Wilkinson scaled a fence into his neighbour’s yard and ran through the alleyway where he was cornered, arrested and taken to the police station.

Earlier on Thursday, a number of police ranks were required to give statements detailing the role they played in handling the prisoner up to the

point when he managed to escape. By noon, two policemen were placed under close arrest and the matter referred to the Police Office of Professional Responsibility for a probe to be launched. Wilkinson was arrested on Monday on allegations of rape and robbery under arms. He was placed on an identification parade and was

pointed out by a number of his alleged victims which resulted in police instituting charges against him, following legal advice. The man was originally slated to appear in court on Thursday but the court clerk, it was reported, accidentally, sent his case file jacket to another magisterial district, which delayed the hearing.

On Thursday, however, as Wilkinson was being prepared for court, he escaped from custody. The police then launched a manhunt for him and, after receiving intelligence, they went to his sister’s home where they were first met with some resistance, during which time Wilkinson tried to slip away through the alleyway but was nabbed.

Her invaluable contributions over the years led to her receiving two national awards in Guyana: The Cacique Crown of Honour and the Arrow of Achievement. She also received the 1992 CARIFESTA Award for Women and the special award of the Caribbean Association of Home Economists of which she was a founding member. Pollard served as the Chairperson of the Guyana National Commission on Women and, during her tenure, organised for the creation of Women’s Bureaus in the

Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OCES). Her active engagement towards the well-being and representation of women’s rights have garnered her much respect and gratitude.

In paying tribute to Pollard last week, President Granger said during her tenure at CARICOM, she strived for the creation of Women’s Bureaus in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and spearheaded a threeyear programme, ‘Management for Development: Effecting Change’ whose target included senior wom-

en administrators. He also mentioned that she has to be credited also, for two publications on Home Economics which she has co-authored.

Over the years, Ms. Pollard served in many capacities, including as President of the Guyana Girl Guides Association, Director at Republic Bank Guyana, Secretary to the Anne Blue Scholarship Programme, the Women and Gender Equality Commission and as Chairperson of the National Commission for Women and Chairperson of the National Task Force on Domestic Violence.

He said a decade and a half later, the Ministry of Finance has opted to enlist the services of a consultant to examine the Procurement Act of 2003 with the intention of bringing the legislation on par with international standards and requirements.

According to him, the consultant, after discovering that there were several areas to improve upon, advised the Finance Ministry to repeal

the legislation and bring in a new Act. Minister Jordan noted that his Ministry is awaiting the Attorney General’s Chambers to complete the Bill, which will replace the Procurement Act of 2003.

He noted that until the new Bill is completed and placed for the House, the current amendment would help to cater to small businesses.

Noting that she expects nothing but positive outcomes from the workshop at hand, as in order to bring about the change that is so desperately needed in the lives of the nation’s men, women, boys and girls, that change must begin with the leaders of society. She said that having interacted regularly with women over the years, she’s found that the issues they’re concerned with the most are those having to do with equal pay, uqual rights and gender equality. “These issues must be addressed by leaders,” she reiterated, as only they have the kind of clout needed to promote such conversations, whether at the government or community level.

She was particularly emphatic that it is important to have MPs on a women and

gender affairs committee, if one is really serious about ensuring that the needs of women and men are addressed in ky pieces of legislation. As a matter of fact, she is of the opinion that all MPs should acquire the requisite skills to conduct critical analyses of issues affecting gender equality.

She even suggested that MPs assume leadership roles at the community level, so they can have a better feel of what’s important to those communities to which they belong where gender disparities and gender equality are concerned, and from that vantage position help push those issues that are so dear to them.

Weighing in on the subject herself, Minister Ally said that it is imperative for women in leadership roles, such as MPs, enhance their own knowledge in all areas of the issues at hand so as to ensure that legislation and policies continuously contribute to the empowerment of women and girls.

“We must place emphasis and examine how development decisions and practices affect both men and women,” she said, and just couldn’t

Officers being trained to analyse crime data

OFFICERS of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be better equipped to analyse data on crime through the Geographic Information System (GIS).

In an effort to build capacity, government, through the Citizens Security Strengthening Programme, will be training approximately 20 officers in the area of GIS over the next two days.

GIS is a primary component of the Integrated Crime Information System (ICIS) that will be implemented for use by the crime observatory and the GPF. It will capture, manage, manipulate and display spa-

stand where things are occurring; where things could potentially occur; understand trends; identify hotspots and understand historical information so that they can do strategic analysis and look at recent information to do tactical analysis.

Interpreting and understanding the information is, however, only part of the citizen security strengthening project. Grant said another part of the project is about putting infrastructure in place.

“We have been looking at the data collection element which is part of the project we are putting together and at the end, the infrastructure will be in place,” she said.

“We will be doing capacity-building with those persons,” said Grant, during the opening session of the training programme at the GPF Training Centre on Thursday.

The programme is an introduction to GIS training which is expected to help officers understand the system and understand how it affects crime analysis.

“They will also be looking at just the use of the software, data collection and input; how they can do analysis, quality assurance and control by way of web maps,” Grant said.

The main aim is to teach officers how to assess information and use it in their daily operations to make their responsibilities more effective.

PPP left behind billions in court judgements

– Minister Jordan MINISTER of Finance, Winston Jordan, has said that Guyana’s development is challenged by the amount of payments the Coalition Government is forced to make towards legal judgements awarded against the state. Most of these cases originated under the previous PPP administration, he revealed.

In an interview with the Department of Public Infor-

mation, the finance minister said that these costs have had, and will continue to have, a negative impact on cash flows, particularly those earmarked for developmental areas.

Explaining that, “any money against the state is money that has to be diverted away from any developmental activity”, Minister Jordan said that a large number of cases were inherited from the

previous government. He acknowledged that there were a few that arose under the current government, but these “pale into insignificance” when compared to what was inherited. The inherited judgements, range from GYD$100,000 to US$40M but were not honoured by the PPP. Minister Jordan explained that once judgement is awarded, interest payments amount to six per cent from the time the case is lodged in the court to the time of the award, and four per cent be-

60% of house lots purchased by low-income families in 2017 IN 2017, the Central Housing & Planning Authority (CH&PA) was able to report a change in the trend of the majority of house lot allocations going to middle and high-income persons, but rather some 60 per cent of allocation going to the low to moderate income groups.

The information is contained in the authority’s 2017 Annual Report which was laid in the National Assembly on Wednesday. The report revealed that the CH&PA allocated 1,131 house lots in total for 2017.

Of the 1,131 house lots allocated, the majority of low to moderate income owners who received housel lots came from Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) totalling 200.

This was followed by 182 low to moderate income owners from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); 131 from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo); 83 from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and others from the various Regions totalling 736.

Meanwhile, in the middle-income category, a total of 252 persons were allocated house lots in Region Four followed by 27 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara). Altogether, the total middle income persons receiving house lots were 313.

The high-income bracket received the least lots with 61 house lots to individuals in Region Four and only three to individuals in Region Three bringing this total to 64. The income categories summed up and added to 18 commercial or industrial plots allocated in Region Four in 2017, brings the ultimate 1,131 lots allocated.

The total house lots allocated represents prequalified applicants who selected and paid for house lots and housing units.

Prior to the allocation of house lots, the CH&PA conducted 4,927 interviews which represented 82. 1 per cent of the 6,000 targeted. The report stated that the highest demand for housing came from Region Four followed by Region Three and Region 10. Of the total lots allocated, 52 went to Region One; 28 to Region Two; 77 to Region Three; 513 to Region Four; 26 to Region Five; 99 to Region Six; 132 to Region Nine and 201 to Region 10.

The Love Story that made ‘Nothing to Laugh About’

H

E came to the relationship with about ten solid years of theatrical experience. She, on the other hand, had zero, but was well equipped with organisational and other skills. Together, they were able to create the unstoppable ‘Nothing to Laugh About,’ which has become one of Guyana’s sold-out and most-loved comedy shows!

What started out as an ‘unlikely’ pair has turned into a beautiful love story between the charming and lovable Maria Benschop and ‘Jumbie’, the humble and very talented Lyndon Jones, who managed to capture Maria’s heart with his endearing personality and great work ethics!

When the show started 12 years ago, ‘Jumbie’ was not really in the picture. It was Maria who wrote all of the scripts, and decided that she wanted to put on a show, although having no experience whatsoever.

Veteran actor and performer, Henry Rodney assisted her in assembling a cast and everything else that was required to do a show. It turned out to be so impressive that it was sold out for the first three nights at the Theatre Guild. And when it was put on at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) for two more nights, it was again sold out.

Maria soon came to realise that she was on to something good here, even in view of the challenges that she no doubt experienced as a result of her limited experience. So, despite spending more than she needed to and falling into some heavy debt, she decided to block out all of the naysayers and press on with the show.

‘Jumbie’, with all his years of experience and talent, felt that he was too good for the show, and didn’t really want to involve himself in something that was new and in his estimation, quite mediocre. So he kept far, but not too far! While he did not perform in the show, he did its filming and editing.

Gradually, as the two started spending a lot of time together, they came to see things that they greatly appreciated in each other. Maria, for one, did not think that she’d want to be in a romantic relationship at that point in her life, owing to the fact that she had a young son and wasn’t sure she wanted to expose him to a step parent relationship.

“From speaking to him and getting to know him, I fell for him because he had a lot of the qualities that I wanted in someone,” she told The Buzz recently when she and some of the show’s cast members met for rehearsals at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School in Georgetown.

“She fell in love with my work and my discipline and the fact that I wasn’t someone trying to milk the situation, to make a lot of money … and how I would be flexible with the timing she had available to work,” Lyndon fondly recalled.

When it was time for part three of the show, he decided to join Maria in putting it together.

“We pooled our resources,” he remembered, adding, “We were different, but when we came together as a team, success drove us.”

“What he put in to it, apart from his money, was his take on comedy; the fusion was…I don’t think I could have done it without him.

The show became a phenomenal success; it was successful financially, and that’s when we started our out of town shows,” said Maria.

Lyndon and Maria allow each other to excel in the areas that they’re better with and in this way, serve as a great complement to each other. “Maria has a lot of energy and she knows what she wants. For example, she is better at making quick, on-the-spot decisions,” Lyndon said.

Maria, being quite particular, likes things to be done a certain way, and would therefore go out of her way to ensure that she gets what she wants. To this day, Lyndon still doesn’t know how much she paid for those authentic ‘Game of Thrones’ costumes that she purchased overseas for a previous show. “In the end, I am always agreeing…and am usually happy about the outcome,” Lyndon expressed.

The couple has been together for roughly ten years now and their union has produced one child, Joshua. “Our relationship now is more comfortable and our roles are more defined now. I deal with marketing and promotion and surprisingly, I am doing the editing because I was trained well,” Maria joked.

“It’s like the satisfaction of a teacher; you can throw back and look at your student work,” Lyndon responded.

THE 2019 SHOW This year, the show will be held at the NCC for four nights beginning Friday, May 31, and Lyndon has been emphasizing that in an effort to show respect for those who turn up on time, the three-hour long show will start at exactly 8 pm.

The tickets cost $1000 for balcony, $1,500 for auditorium rear and $2,500 for auditorium front and are available at the NCC, Sterling Products Igloo Outlet, Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop, Payless Variety store, Gizmos and Gadgets, the New Nigel’s Supermarket, and Giftland Mall’s department store and supermarket.

Lyndon said it is no exaggeration to say that this year’s show will surpass the previous shows by far. If only the taxes being charged on the show could have been reduced, Maria pointed out.

“I don’t mind paying the NCC rental fees and the usher fees, but the 20 percent on ticket sales and 14 percent on VAT… If they take off one of those taxes from the producer, I think a lot more persons will become involved in the arts,” Maria said.

Lyndon said the authorities can also do little things to help the producers promote such a cultural show. For one, they can air their advertisements on the government station for free, and even allow them to use the electronic billboard outside of the NCC. This year’s show will feature some of the best personalities in the field of comedy and acting such as Jumbie, Michel ‘Credit’ Ignatius, Leza ‘Radica’ Singh, Mark ‘Chiney Man’ Kazim, Chris Gopaul, and Mark Luke Edwards.

Because, for that event I just used my social media and Hits and Jams radio to promote,” Drew said.

It is for that reason, the young organiser said him and the Guyana Carnival committee want to give the youths that experience again.

“Now to start Carnival, we want to bring the same elements of the Block Party and combine them with some very lost traditional elements of our culture; being the stilt walkers, the fire breath-

AM A BOSS” at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre on June 28.

The event’s objective is to inspire, empower and encourage entrepreneurs and persons in business that may need a boost in

developing and crafting the skills in their skilled area as they glean strength from others in the profession.

According to the project coordinator Ruth Johnson, the idea behind the

chosen wording of the event is not to suggest that one being a boss is not being bossy, in the sense of manipulation and control, but it is to communicate the concept of garnering strength in a specific field of skill, or a project that is assigned to the individual.

This year’s theme is “Empower to impact,” and is open up to men who might be struggling in the

area of self-confidence.

The event this year will feature some dynamic speakers including Dr Rosh Khan, the President of Franklin Convey and Master Class Institute and Social Rank Media.

Kamal Persaud, a public figure, politician and Philanthropist and Lilowatie Napal, a breast cancer activist and humanitarian.

The event is slated for May 24th in the National Park, and is part of the Guyana Carnival activities.

Personality of The Week : ’Azariel’ : More than just an artiste

HIS week’s personality is nothing short of an exceptional Guyanese youth, whose success should be one to emulate.

Meet 23-year-old Kristoff Azariel Sauns, who goes by the stage name ‘Azariel’ or ‘Lwlss Boss’. Azariel hails from the ‘West Side’ village of Crane, has been tearing up social media with his unique style of music.

In an interview with ‘the Buzz Magazine’, the young entertainer said that he has always been a lover of music, and knew that one day,

he would be a valuable addition to the industry. He said that he gets inspiration from a wide range of artistes.

“Growing up I was more drawn to Soca music because of influence from local artistes such as Jumo and Adrian (x2), Big Red, and others. Then when I got into high school, I got more drawn to dancehall, and as a result I now do both soca and dancehall music. Vybz Kartel is my biggest musical influence, he’s King in my book. But I still listen to the other dancehall artistes because I learn from them all,

even other genres,” he said.

Given the aforementioned, Azariel demonstrates versatility in his releases.

Though music is his passion, Azariel knew the importance of education in his success, and strived to get an academic career as well.

After graduating from St. Joseph High. He went on to study aircraft maintenance at Art Williams and Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School. Now, he’s not just an entertainer, but also a licensed, type rated aircraft maintenance engineer, employed with

BK Aviation inc. at Eugene F. Correia int’l airport.

He said that he plans to keep doing both engineering and music and see where it goes from there, because he simply cannot choose one.

“Because of my job, music sometimes take a backseat but I’ll never stop doing music. I love it,” he said.

Giving all thanks to his parents, the young man said “I’m motivated and supported by my mom, Marsha Browne and my dad, Colin Sauns, they’ve funded all my studies all along and they also support the musical side as well and for that I’ll be forever grateful.”

Nick Kyrgios storms off court

(BBC) - NICK Kyrgios admitted “emotions got the better of me” after forfeiting his second-round match with Norwegian Casper Ruud at the Italian Open.

The Australian, 24, was in the deciding set when he was given a game penalty, reportedly for swearing, to trail 2-1.

He then kicked a bottle, threw down his racquet, hurled a chair on the court, picked up his bag and walked off.

Kyrgios was fined 20 000 euros (£17 461) for unsports-

manlike conduct and also lost his prize money.

In addition to the prize money of £29 366, he forfeited the 45 ranking points gained during the tournament and was told to cover the costs of his hospitality.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “Very eventful day to say the least. Emotions got the better of me and I just wanted to say that the atmosphere was crazy out there today, just super unfortunate that it had to end in a default.

“Sorry Rome, see you

again, maybe.”

Kyrgios has a history of fines for poor behaviour on court and in March clashed with a fan at the Miami Open.

Earlier this week he served underarm during victory over Daniil Medvedev, while his actions yesterday came as it emerged that he told a podcast interview that he “could not stand” Novak Djokovic - whom he described as “cringeworthy” - and called Rafael Nadal “super salty”.

In the 50-minute interview,

Kyrgios, who last year said he was talking to psychologists to address mental health issues, was asked about his opinion on a number of tennis stars.

After branding Roger Federer the “greatest of all time”, he went in on Nadal, calling the Spaniard his “polar opposite”.

But he had nicer things to say about Britain’s Andy Murray, currently out of the game following hip surgery.

“It sucks not seeing him around here, in the locker room; he was the best,” he said.

Norwegian Ruud said he thought Kyrgios had “got what he deserved,” when asked about the matter later.

However, he believes the ATP, which governs men’s tennis, should now take action.

“He thinks he can do what he likes,” Ruud added.

“He was getting more and more angry. There’s been a lot of talk about it with other players.

Solskjaer will get financial backing - Woodward (BBC) - OLE Gunnar Solskjaer will get the financial backing to bring success back to Manchester United, says executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

CWI to stage emerging players’ training camp (CMC) – CRICKET West Indies (CWI) will stage a training camp for emerging players at month end, geared towards developing their skills in the limited overs formats.

Fifteen players will gather at the West Indies High Performance Centre at the Coolidge Cricket Ground here for the May 27 to June 13 programme which is part of a new CWI thrust to invest heavily in player-development at the youth level.

“The camp will be delivered by the CWI high-performance team with a focus on developing the players’ white-ball skills and building on the potential the players have shown coming through the CWI pathway of youth and senior regional tournaments,” said High Performance Centre programme manager Graeme West.

“The development of players is key to the West Indies’ future success and we have to begin to build the depth of talent in the white-ball formats, especially 50 overs.”

The group selected includes four members of the ICC Under-19 World Cup-winning side from 2016 with batsman Keacy Carty and seamers Odean Smith, Chemar Holder and all-rounder Shamar Springer.

Left-arm pacer Dominic Drakes, son of former West Indies fast bowler Vasbert Drakes, has also been included.

“We have seen the emergence of a number of our talented Under-23s, like Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Keemo

Paul, Oshane Thomas, Sherfane Rutherford and Obed McCoy, into the West Indies white-ball squads in recent matches and all have performed creditably,” West explained.

“We have a strong group of emerging players and this initiative is a good opportunity at harnessing that talent, raising the profiles of some of our outstanding young talent, and preparing them to be future West Indies stars.”

Twelve of the 15 players, including the likes of Drakes, Smith and Springer, have been identified for next week’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) draft and West said they would be guaranteed spots in the various franchises.

“This is the first time that the CWI selection panel has provided a pool of emerging players to CPL,” said West.

“The 12 players who have been identified by the selection panel are guaranteed contracts with the six franchises and will be entered into the CPL Draft taking place later this month in London, where the franchises will make their squad selections.”

“It is a funny game you know. When the World Cup comes, hopefully, the runs would flow. I have a lot of experience so I know what it is like. I am just happy with the way I am batting right now and hope to carry on,” Gayle noted.

“I could never dream of playing so many World Cups but it has happened.

It shows consistency in the career. That keeps you going and earn a lot of praise.

“Hard work in the last couple of years paid off.

People want to see you more and you are trying to deliver as much as possible.”

In the twilight of what has been a stellar career in all formats – he has played 103 Tests and scored two triple centuries. Gayle said his major motivation now was keeping fans happy.

“Honestly (I do it for) the fans, I am not going to lie. Maybe couple of years ago the thought did cross my mind of retirement.. Then the fans came out and said ‘don’t go’. They actually drive me to go on,” the Jamaican said.

“I know nothing lasts forever and hopefully I can give them a few more games and it also pushes you to win the World Cup.” Gayle announced earlier this year he would retire from ODIs following the World Cup.

All systems in place for GOBSA Independence Track & Field Meet this weekend … 270 athletes to participate

AT least 270 athletes are set to compete on the track and in the field this weekend at the National Track and Field Centre (NTFC), Leonora, West Coast Demerara, when the Guyana Overseas-Based Sports Association (GOBSA) runs off its fourth Annual Independence Track and Field Meet.

The meet will see high quality competition on tomorrow and Sunday with 273 athletes already registered from as young as the U-10 age group.

Speaking at the pre-competition press conference yesterday at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) head office, president Aubrey Huston opined that the sheer number

of registered athletes would make for enthralling competition.

David Thomas, GOBSA president, also noted that the meet will ideally serve in helping to identify young talent as Guyana prepares to host the 2021 CARIFTA Games.

Meanwhile vice-president Gordon Lewis had high praises for Anisha Gibbons, Guyana’s first U-17 javelin female gold medallist at the recent CARIFTA Games.

Gibbons was the recipient of two female javelins, courtesy of former national thrower Patrick Harding, in conjunction with GOBSA. This is the first time the 14-year-old will be able to train with the right javelin as she continues her journey as a na-

tional athlete.

The event, which in-

volves past and present students of the Mackenzie High School (MHS) and the Christianburg/Wismar Secondary ‘Multi’ School, is dubbed an Independence Day meet at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.

Main organiser of the

event and former MHS track athlete, ‘Baldhead’ McNeil, told Chronicle Sport: “The major people that had promised to come on board are there. So far Banks DIH, Star Party Rentals, Guyana Power Producing and Distribu-

tion Centre, Easton Cordis, former national athlete Bruce Butcher and Guyana Defence Force’s Medical Officer Nigel Langhorne have contributed handsomely to this venture.

Other pledges are still expected because the idea is to make this a grand event.”

9th Annual Rainforest Waters 11-race Cycling meet set for tomorrow

Curtis Dey was last year’s winner of the Rainforest Waters 11-race cycling meet.

BANKS DIH, through its Rainforest Waters brand will sponsor the 9th annual 11-race Cycling meet tomorrow at the inner circuit of the National Park.

Guyana’s top cyclists will assemble from 09:30hrs tomorrow for the event which is organised by National cycling coach Hassan Mohamed. They will compete for top honours and sprint prizes along with trophies.

Last year’s winner was Curtis ‘Chappy’ Dey who took the feature 35-lap Schoolboys and Invitational race in one hour 14 minutes 56.09 seconds. Jamual John was second.

Andrew Hicks, Christopher Griffith, Briton John and Silvio Innis placed third to sixth in that order.

However, Dey has not climbed atop the podium in recent times and will be hoping that he can find form in time to

retain his title. He will face tough challenges from Romello Crawford, Michael Anthony, Paul De Nobrega and Briton John.

In the Boys and Girls 12, Steve Bhimsen was last year’s winner while David Hicks and Jonathan Ramsuchit were second and third respectively.

Last year’s winner in the Veterans U-45 was Junior Niles, who will be looking to retain his title, Steve Ramsuchit and Clement Doris placed second and third last year.

In the Over-50 category, Shameer Baksh was first with Linden Blackman and Kevin Jeffrey second and third.

Briton John was the winner of the Juveniles race with Adealie Hodge and Hameswar Dhanai settling for second and third spots.

Woodpecker Products Junior Squash National tournament continues

WEDNESDAY evening saw the first five-setter of the Woodpecker Junior Squash National Tournament at the Georgetown Club in the Boys Under-13 match between Dhiren Persaud and Chad DeAbreu.

After identical scores in the first two games of 11-6, the first going to Persaud and the second to DeAbreu, neither player was willing to let go in the third, as they fought to 1917 (player must win by two clear points).

DeAbreu took an early lead of 6-1 before Persaud climbed back up. DeAbreu had game ball at 10-6 but Persaud refused to back down and powered 5 clear points to edge ahead.

The boys went point for point, shot for shot right up to 17 all, but it was the lion heart of DeAbreu that pushed past the finish line with a 19-17 game victory.

The effort took its toll on DeAbreu though, as Persaud came back to dominate in the fourth and fifth with two 11-3 wins to take the match.

Older brother Demetrius DeAbreu controlled his Under-15 match against Zachary Persaud.

Despite a spirited fight from Persaud, DeAbreu defeated him 11-7, 11-6, 11-1.

A passionate game played out when Shiloh Asregado and Joshua Verwey took to the court.

The two Under-13 boys showed great promise as they displayed improved skills.

It was Asregado who came out on top, however, with a 3-0 triumph.

Mohryan Baksh suffered his first defeat of the competition at the hands of Nicholas Verwey when he played up into the Under-15 category.

Verwey was too strong for Baksh who made a valiant effort but succumbed at 11-5, 11-3, 11-1.

In the only girls’ match of the evening, Kirsten Gomes unsurprisingly made light work of Angel Rahamin 11-1, 11-2, 11-1 for the Girls Under-15 category.

Gomes will see her only real challenge of the tournament when she plays in the Under-17 & U-19 against long-time on-court rival and title-holder Abosaide Cadogan on tomorrow evening.

Archery Guyana continues its development ARCHERY Guyana is expected to benefit from advanced training techniques and skills when its Outdoor champion (2018) Robert Singh leaves for San Fernando, Trinidad to participate in a Development Coaching Seminar with the world-renowned South Korean Archery coach Kim, Hyung Tae Kim from May 18 to 21.

Coach Kim started archery in 1967 when the sport was first introduced to Korea.

In 1971 he became the first Korean archery coach. He then studied and further developed archery techniques for archers.

He established the fundamentals of Korean archery by passing on archery know-how to Korean coaches and athletes from 1983 to 1986, acquiring the first gold and bronze med-

als at the 1984 LA Olympics and copping several world records.

From 1989 to 1994, he raised the Taiwanese national team to world class standard.

For 12 years, since 2002, as elected Coach Committee of the World Archery Federation, he has conducted seminars, coached archers across the world and participated

in developing a coaching manual.

Coach Kim has provided opportunities to several coaches and archers across the world by publishing the

Kim, Hyung-tak archery book. Current Korean archers follow this coaching manual which was published by Korea Archery Association in 2012.

In 2004 he opened the Kim Hyung-Tak Archery School and since then over 2 000 archers from 40 countries have trained at this centre and many archers have gained successful results at Olympics and World Championships. At present, many archers and teams are training there.

He participated in the 2015 Summer Universiade as a compound coach of Korean national team, and gained 3 gold medals at individual, team and mixed team events. He popularised new compound techniques to Korea which have helped to rapidly propel Korea to be top in the

world.

Coach Kim utilises the dart fish video programme to analyse the technique of archers accurately so that they can gain better results in a shorter time.

Archery Guyana wishes Mr Robert Singh success at this seminar. This exposure will assist in developing both Robert Singh and the sport of archery in Guyana.

This also forms part of his preparations for the Beginners/Developmental competition to be hosted in Santo Domingo in June 2019.
