CH&PA, GPL advance work on access-road project

Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA), Dr Martin Pertab, on Tuesday led a technical visit to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Access Road Project as efforts intensify to address outstanding challenges and accelerate completion of the critical infrastructure.

President Ali to address nation today PRESIDENT, Dr Irfaan Ali is expected to address the nation today, following months of signalling the government’s intention to unveil a comprehensive package of measures aimed at further empowering all Guyanese.

The President had first made this announcement in early November outlining then that the government has plans to roll out initiatives targeting persons living with disabilities, the elderly, women and children, as well as farmers and small business owners.

He had emphasised that, over the next five years, the adminis-

tration is pursuing a holistic approach that goes beyond immediate financial relief to address the diverse needs of citizens.

Highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to modernise public services, the President noted that the entire system is being digitised to ensure efficiency and transparency in the distribution of benefits. To this end he encouraged the public to open bank accounts in preparation for electronic transfers.

Building on the PPP/C’s track record of fulfilling its commitments, President Ali had told reporters too that the govern-

ment’s support will go beyond cash bonuses and transfers.

Guyana on course to continue leading regional growth in 2026

- with projected 24% growth in real GDP, ECLAC’S report highlights GUYANA’S economic transformation shows no signs of slowing down, as after posting unprecedented growth in 2024 and maintaining double digits expansion in 2025, the country is poised to witness another year of acceleration in 2026, with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) forecasting a 24 per cent real GDP growth.

The projections were highlighted by ECLAC in its Preliminary Overview of the Economies of Latin America and the Caribbean 2025.

According to the re-

port, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is projected at 24 per cent for 2026, while growth in 2024 and 2025 was estimated at 43.6 per cent and 15.2 per cent, respectively.

The projection underscores Guyana’s continued performance in the region. According to the report, the Caribbean, excluding Guyana, is forecast to grow by 1.8 per cent in 2026, at a slightly slower pace compared with 2025.

The UN ECLAC noted that economic expansion is subject to tourism and construction trends in the subregion, which is highly vulnerable given its de-

pendence on imported energy, high transport costs and exposure to natural disasters.

The positive outlook for Guyana reinforces the recent assertion advanced

by President Dr. Irfaan Ali that Guyana is entering what he described as its “Golden Era,” driven not only by oil and gas but by a strategic plan to foster long-term, diversified development.

In a recent address, the President noted that while much of Guyana’s momentum is buzzing around its burgeoning oil and gas sector, the government remains disciplined in its efforts in ensuring that the country’s economy is one that will be built on pillars of diversification.

Dr. Ali had said: “This journey that we are on is now getting fired up, but we are not only injecting fuel on this leg of the transformation.”

Guyana, he noted, has built its energy ecosystems around understanding the global environment to ‘shock proof’ its economy from shortfalls.

The Head of State had said: “We are living in what is described as Guyana’s Golden Era, a time where our nation will be the envy to many, a time when the world is looking to us, not out of curiosity, but out of admiration and critically it means that the opportunities for Guyanese firms will multiply.”

He noted too that Guyana is building out an infrastructure, allowing the country to enhance its capacity to take care of consumption. This is an energy mix and integration which he believes is

critical for resilience and sustainability.

He stressed that the c o u n t r y ’s l o n g - t e r m strength will not be on how much oil it produces, but how wisely it converts that wealth into infrastructure, human capital, energy security and a diversified economy.

SOCIAL INVESTMENT ALONGSIDE GROWTH Back in August, President Ali had described the PPP/C’s manifesto as a “blueprint for development” and a binding pact with the people, rather than a collection of campaign promises.

He had stressed at the manifesto’s official launch that it was crafted over several years through community engagement and policy planning, ensuring that it reflects national priorities rather than election-period rhetoric.

At its core, the manifesto focuses on strengthening macroeconomic stability while building resilience against global shocks such as market volatility and international conflicts. It prioritises regional development, major infrastructure projects, household empowerment and small-business growth, with the overarching goal of ensuring prosperity and stability across all sectors of society.

Since returning to office following the September 1 polls, President Ali has touted the government’s plans to unveil a suite of comprehensive measures to support households and cushion the global trend of increased cost of living.

The government has invested heavily in the social welfare of Guyanese, while also building out the country’s infrastructural landscape to enable longterm growth and sustained development.

Among the plethora of measures rolled out from 2020 to 2025 are the re-introduction and increase of the education grant to the children; the increase in old-age pension; increase in public assistance; targeted cash transfers, and the grant for persons living with disabilities; health vouchers and programmes; and the removal and reduction of taxes, along with other targeted tax-deduction measures.

In addition to this, the government has abolished tuition fees at the University of Guyana and several technical vocational institutions, making tertiary education free of cost.

Meanwhile, several nursery, primary and secondary schools were rehabilitated and newly commissioned in an effort to promote equitable access

to education levels.

The government also moved to open several new regional hospitals, thereby enhancing the delivery of healthcare across the country.

POLICY CONTINUITY Recently, Senior Minister within the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, had stated that the 2026 National Budget will be firmly anchored in the government’s manifesto commitments, setting the direction for delivery over the next five years.

“We pride ourselves on policy, clarity and policy continuity. We pride ourselves as a party in government, and we have been very clear about what we intend to do over the next five years before the 2025 general elections of the 1st of September,” the Finance Minister had said.

Dr. Singh emphasised that policy consistency, clarity and continuity remain central to the administration’s approach.

In his remarks, he had outlined the government’s proactive role in shaping the country’s economic trajectory, stressing that the transformation underway is not accidental but the result of a clear and focused vision.

Trump orders blockade of sanctioned oil tankers in and out of Venezuela

U S P re s i d e n t D o n a l d Trump has said he is ordering a "a total and complete" blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers going into and out of Venezuela.

In a post on Truth Social, he said Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's government had been designated a foreign terrorist organisation and accused it of stealing US assets, as well as "Terrorism, Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking".

"Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND

His remarks came a week after the US seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Venezuela has not yet responded to Trump's latest remarks.

In his post, Trump said Venezuela was "completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America".

He added that it will

"only get bigger" and "be like nothing they have ever seen before".

Trump also accused Maduro's government of using stolen oil to "finance themselves, Drug Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Murder, and Kidnapping".

The Trump administration has repeatedly accused Venezuela of drug smuggling, and since September the US military has killed at least 90 people in strikes on boats it alleged were carrying fentanyl and other illegal

drugs to the US. In recent months, the US has also moved warships into the region.

Venezuela - home to some of the world's largest proven oil reserves - has, in turn, accused Washington of seeking to steal its resources.

The US, under both Trump and former President Joe Biden, has opposed the Maduro government for years and pressed for him to be removed by instituting stringent sanctions.

Last week, the US im-

posed fresh sanctions on six more ships it said were carrying Venezuelan oil.

Sanctions were also placed on some of President Maduro's relatives and on businesses associated with what the US called his illegitimate regime.

A day earlier the US said it had seized a tanker off Venezuela's coast.

The White House said the seized vessel, called the Skipper, had been involved in "illicit oil shipping" and would be taken to an Amer-

ican port.

Venezuela's government denounced the seizure, with Maduro saying the US "kidnapped the crew" and "stole" the ship.

The US had built up its military presence in the Caribbean Sea, which borders Venezuela to the north, in the days before the raid.

‘GovConnect’ goes online to make access to public services easier - available for download on both Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Minister Ally announces

THE Government of Guyana has launched GovConnect, a new digital appointment system aimed at improving access to public services and enhancing efficiency across government ministries.

The mobile application, which is now integrated into the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency

Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, the initiative forms part of the administration’s wider commitment to improving service delivery in line with President, Dr. Irfaan Ali’s and the PPP/C’s manifesto promises.

“The Government of Guyana is pleased to introduce GovConnect, a new

Ally also commended the National Data Management Authority for its role in developing and rolling out the application.

“I wish to thank the staff

of the NDMA for their exceptional work and swift execution in developing and implementing this app,” he said.

The minister added that GovConnect will be rolled out across all ministries, encouraging citizens to look out for further updates as the system continues to expand.

The government has begun the rollout of several innovative technology initiatives aimed at improving access to basic services, which has seen the country heading into a new era with several digital and artificial intelligence-led platforms aimed at improving access to government services and enhancing security.

Guyana recently began the implementation of the electronic identification system.

President Ali had previously assured citizens that there will be public awareness and education as the government looks to roll out the initiative. Dr. Ali was the first to receive his E-ID back in August.

The biometric cards will not only offer citizens preferential treatment in certain areas but will also strengthen border control by monitoring

who is entering the country.

The cards will be important for daily transactions, including opening bank accounts, and are a critical part of Guyana’s wider digital transformation agenda.

The government is also creating service centres in every region, where citizens can visit, conduct their businesses, and have queries handled within their home regions, eliminating the need to travel to Georgetown for government services.

Ready to Deliver

WHEN a government announces plans to introduce significant changes for ordinary citizens, such as farmers, small- business owners, the elderly, and people with disabilities, it deserves serious attention.

President, Dr Irfaan Ali's address today will further show the PPP/C administration's genuine commitment to moving beyond talk and taking real action to address the challenges faced by Guyanese families.

This approach is worth highlighting. Instead of spreading resources thinly across various disconnected initiatives, the government has laid out a vision focused on overall development.

By addressing vulnerable

and productive groups at the same time, elderly citizens, women, children, farmers, and entrepreneurs, the administration understands that true progress relies on more than half-measures.

This is governance that appreciates interdependence: a healthy economy needs strong families, educated young people, and empowered small-business owners working together.

The government's focus on modernisation is particularly noteworthy.

Digitising public services goes beyond making things easier; it shows a commitment to removing the bureaucratic obstacles that have often hindered social programmes.

Electronic transfers, simple systems, and clear processes create accountability that benefits both recipients and taxpayers. This government believes that efficiency and dignity can go hand in hand; that getting help doesn’t have to involve navigating frustrating and complex systems.

The past matters here.

The PPP/C has shown its ability to turn ambitious plans into real results in recent years. The growth of school-feeding programmes, investments in health facilities, and support for housing have shifted from campaign promises to actual benefits for thousands of Guyanese.

This gives reason to believe that today's address

will lead to similar successful implementation, rather than being forgotten.

The government already has the broad vision of enhancing access to quality healthcare; affordable education; opportunities for home ownership; lower interest rates on business loans, and improved community infrastructure are not luxuries, but essential elements of a dignified life.

By treating these as interconnected priorities to be pursued over a five-year period, rather than during short election cycles, the government shows strategic thinking based on how real prosperity develops.

The invitation for citizens to open bank accounts

may seem like a small step, but it carries significant meaning. It represents partnership: the government will provide tools and opportunities, but citizens must also prepare and engage.

This mutual approach respects individual agency while recognising that together, they can achieve improvement.

Today's address is expected to further detail specific beneficiary groups, programme timelines, and resource allocations. These details are crucial for evaluation.

However, even before these specifics are announced, it is important to recognise the government's willingness to base its legit-

imacy on a comprehensive vision of inclusive prosperity.

In a time of fragmented politics and narrowly-focused benefits, this represents a different political approach, one that insists genuine development must include everyone.

Guyanese citizens listening should approach today's message with both critical and hopeful minds. A government dedicated to systematic empowerment, supported by a proven track record and modern systems, holds real promise for change.

While the specifics will shape the outcome, the ambition itself deserves acknowledgment.

AUBREY Norton needs either to remove himself from the leader position of the PNC or stay silent, and let others in the party hierarchy do the public speaking. He opens his mouth and says very embarrassing things.

Mr. Norton recently said on his party television programme, “Nation Watch” that he plans to revitalise the PNC. Here are the words of Norton: “When you come out of an election in which you suffer a defeat, you cannot just bury your head in the sand.”

But that is exactly what Norton is doing and has been doing since the national election of September 1 - burying his head so deep in the sand that by the time people pull him from underneath the sand castle, there will be no PNC left.

Before we proceed, let’s look at his admission of de-

feat. He used the word defeat, but Norton is on record as saying that the PNC was not defeated in the March 2020 poll and the September 2025 poll.

There is no need for a party to reflect on its defeat and intensify mobilisation in the society because you were not defeated in the first place.

Let’s quote Norton: “We will engage the youth because I do believe that urgent work needs to be done with the youth.”

But why the urgency when the youths were there with you in 2020 and 2025, and you did not lose because the elections were rigged?

Norton needs to do the decent thing and level with the people who gave the PNC 12 seats. Did you win both the 2020 and 2025 contests or were you defeated? It appears that Norton is finally conceding that the PNC was defeated on September 2025 because

he used the word, defeat.

Let’s return to his presentation on Nation Watch.

Nowhere in his delivery did he even vaguely allude to riding away. But he has to mount that horse because the PNC and the wider society know Mr. Norton is the problem besetting the PNC. The word Norton used to describe his role in the PNC is “revitalise.” If ever there was a politician who chose a word that has self-destruction propulsion is that word Norton chose.

To revitalise a person or an organisation means you have to identify the symptom that has caused lack of vitality in the first place.

The PNC’s biology and physiology began to lose vitality because too many talented people were leaving and they put the blame on Norton.

The party went from 31 seats to 12. Days after the

elections, top PNC decision-makers accused Norton of assigning parliamentary status to 12 persons without any input from the leadership of the party.

The list includes the Chairman of the PNC – Shurwayne Holder and the Treasurer, Elson Low. Party stalwart and executive member, Mervyn Williams resigned soon after the election. It was Mr. Norton who designated Terrence Campbell as parliamentary leader of the PNC group in parliament.

The same Campbell told Demerara Waves that he cannot remember when he joined the PNC but he knew it was recent.

Two questions the analyst needs to put forward. Can the PNC be revitalised and can Norton be the person to spearhead the rejuvenation process. The answer to the first question is yes. The PNC

is too historic an organisation with massive support among African Guyanese not to be able to recalibrate and do so successfully. The answer to the second question is no.

Mr. Norton has presided over the second worst electoral disaster in the Caribbean after the black-wash that occurred in Barbados when the Barbados Labour Party won all the parliamentary seats and its opponents, the Democratic Labour Party did not win any seats.

Maybe at psychological level, Norton cannot comprehend what happened to the PNC on September 1, 2025.

A political party just three months old snatched 16 seats from constituencies that voted for the PNC since 1957. That party has displaced the PNC as the major opposition in parliament, and took away the regional governments the PNC controlled since free and

fair election returned in 1992.

For a party to suffer a tsunamic defeat yet its leader behaves as if life goes on as normal is extremely bizarre.

Leaders of political parties like Norton anywhere in the world do not survive after such incomprehensible devastation as what happened to the PNC. If Norton stays on as the PNC leader, there will be no revitalisation (his word) but demise. The longer Norton stays on as PNC leader, those youths that he plans to engage with to regenerate the PNC will not come. Those youths want a new PNC leader. They deserve it.

Special Projects Unit to provide road access for Diamond Back Street residents

DURING a site visit to the community of Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill announced that his ministry’s Special Projects Unit will complete works in Back Street, Diamond, committing to providing road access before Christmas.

Minister Edghill said at the time that since they had made their hotline public, they’ve had great participation from the public,

with persons bringing to the ministry’s attention the various inconveniences and challenges being faced in communities while capital works are being done.

Back Street, Diamond, is one of these areas where consistent calls and complaints have been made.

According to the minister, a few weeks prior, they had to terminate the contract with a “delinquent contractor.”

While no name was provided for the contractor,

the minister called him a “nuisance to the neighbourhood.”

In a video posted on the ministry’s page, it was observed that the contractor while executing his work interrupted access and the usual mobility of residents in Back Street, Diamond, resulting in several residents having to park some distance away from their homes.

“The project time has passed, and this is the state.

I should say it was in a

worst state because we’ve had to send in the Special Projects Unit. They’ve been here like a week now, to start restoring and getting this project finished,” Minister Edghill said.

With this in mind, the minister declared that as a ministry, they will not tolerate poor performance, nor will they allow situations such as this to go unaddressed, once it is brought to their attention.

He assured the residents and road users of Back

GUYANA has underscored the importance of youth participation in global peace and security during a high-level event commemorating the 10th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 (UNSCR 2250).

Delivering the statement at the High-Level Stocktaking Event on Youth, Peace, and Security on Monday, Ambassador Trishala Persaud, Deputy Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, said, “Guyana is pleased to co-sponsor this event which commemorates the 10th anniversary of the resolution 2250.”

She added, “We thank the UN Youth Office, DPPA [UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs] and UNFPA [United Nations Population Fund] for organising today’s event and welcome the valuable opportunity for stocktaking.”

Ambassador Persaud highlighted the historical significance of the reso-

lution, noting that it “was significant in its establishment of the youth peace and security agenda and formal recognition that youth represent a unique demographic that can contribute to the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security.”

She reflected on the evolving perception of young people in global affairs.

“While young people have been contributing to peace and security long before 2015, in the international arena, they were primarily seen as victims and, in some instances, as threats,” she said.

She added that with today’s global youth population being the largest in history, “it is prudent for the international community to empower them to realise their potential to contribute to peace and security and enable their participation in preventing conflict and building peace. There is still much work to be done in this regard.”

Citing the United Nations Secretary-General’s 2024 Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) report, Ambassador Persaud emphasised the persistent barriers to meaningful youth engagement.

“Youth participation in peace and security remains limited in most spaces on account of lack of trust between governments and youth, ageism, lack of political will and lack of

funding,” she noted.

Over the past decade, Ambassador Persaud said, international mechanisms supporting youth engagement have grown, including contributions through the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), and the establishment of the UN Youth Office.

However, she noted that youth participation “has been less pronounced and considered inconsistently in the Security Council—the UN body with primary responsibility for maintaining global peace and security.”

To address this gap, Guyana, together with Sierra Leone, tabled a resolution aimed at strength-

ening youth engagement within the council.

“Resolution 2807 was adopted unanimously by the council on Friday,” Ambassador Persaud reported.

While acknowledging that initial objectives were scaled back during negotiations, she said the resolution still introduces “significant measures to advance implementation of the YPS agenda, including the holding of open debates to discuss the YPS reports of the Secretary-General, which previously was largely underutilised, and support for the safe participation of youth briefers in council meetings.”

Ambassador Persaud also described Resolution 2807 as facilitating “in-depth expert-level discussions on YPS in country-specific contexts and encourages continued coordination between the Security Council and the Peacebuilding Commission, and among UN agencies, on YPS as part of a comprehensive approach to peacebuilding and sustaining peace.”

In addition to its substantive provisions, Guyana views the resolution as a symbolic gesture for youth worldwide.

“Guyana views the adoption of the resolution

as an important signal to the world’s youth of the council’s recognition and confidence in the positive contributions youth can make to peace and security,” she said.

Turning to broader UN initiatives, Ambassador Persaud stressed that engagement with the UN80 process should not focus solely on budgetary constraints.

“It is apposite to emphasise that as we engage on the UN80 initiative, we should not treat this as only a cutting exercise to address the serious liquidity constraints of the UN, but also an opportunity for prioritisation,” she noted.

Concluding her remarks, she highlighted the direct link between youth investment and global peace.

“For Guyana, investment in youth is an investment in peace. Engaging young people, giving them a greater voice in decision-making at local, national, regional and international levels will yield lasting peace dividends,” Ambassador Persaud said.

The event marked a milestone in the ongoing effort to recognise and enhance the role of youth in sustaining peace, a decade after the adoption of UNSCR 2250.

Disclosure completed in Regent Street gas station bombing case

SENIOR Police Legal Advisor, attorney-at-law Mandel Moore, on Tuesday, completed the disclosure of evidence in the case arising from the deadly October 26 bombing of a gas station at the corner of Regent and King streets, Georgetown, moving the matter closer to paper committal proceedings.

The disclosure was made before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts in relation to four of the seven persons charged.

They are Venezuelan nationals Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, 33; Johnny Boodram, 27; and Alexander Bettancourt, 44, along with 33-yearold Guyanese Krystal LaCruz.

The court was informed by Moore that the prosecution’s disclosure bundle includes witness statements, forensic analyses, electronic and telecommunications data, along with other documentary material the state intends to rely on in advancing its case.

mittal process to determine whether the matter should be sent to the High Court for trial.

A paper committal is a pre-trial legal procedure in serious criminal matters where a magistrate assesses whether sufficient evidence exists to commit an accused to stand trial in the High Court, based solely on written material and without hearing live testimony.

The case is scheduled to continue on December 30 before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty.

The charges stem from the October 26 explosion at the Mobil gas station at the corner of Regent and King Streets, which claimed the life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne and injured four of her relatives.

Poedemo is charged separately with terrorism contrary to Section 3(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act. The charge alleges that he placed and detonated an explosive device with intent to threaten Guyana’s security and sovereignty or to strike terror among the public, resulting in the child’s death.

The three other defendants—Venezuelan national Jennifer Rodriguez, 33, and Guyanese nationals Wayne Correia, 44, and Ramesh Pramdeo, 51—are jointly

charged with aiding and abetting Poedemo in the commission of the terrorist act.

Their case will be called today at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

Investigators allege that Poedemo entered Guyana around 08:00 hours on the day of the attack, carrying the explosive device in two bulky black plastic bags captured on surveillance footage.

Minutes after he entered the gas station compound, the device detonated, killing Bourne and injuring several others. All seven accused persons

remain on remand as proceedings continue.

Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond said the accused will face the full force of the law, confirming that the government will seek the death penalty for the terror attack, as provided for under Guyana’s anti-terrorism laws.

The Criminal Law (Offences) Act specifically addresses the commission of terrorist acts, defining what constitutes terrorism and prescribing penalties — including the death penalty when such acts result in the loss of life.

Guyana reaffirms anti-corruption drive amidst rapid growth - at UN conference

ATTORNEY-GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, has told the United Nations (UN) that Guyana’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies has sharpened the country’s resolve to combat corruption, warning of its “pernicious nature” and its ability to undermine every sector of society.

Addressing the Eleventh Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, Nandlall positioned Guyana’s anti-corruption agenda squarely within the context of its recent economic transformation.

He noted that the country is “the only English-speaking nation on the continent of South America,” a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and “the world’s newest petrostate.”

“It is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, recording a growth rate of almost 50 per cent in 2024,” he said.

He added that the growth, driven by newly discovered petroleum revenues, has made Guyana “even more acutely aware of the pernicious nature of corruption and its destructive impact in every sphere of human endeavour.”

Against that backdrop, the Attorney-General emphasised that Guyana “remains a committed participant in the global battle for the elimination of all forms of corruption.”

He reaffirmed the country’s “unwavering commitment to continue to implement the letter and spirit of the United Nations Convention against corruption.”

Nandlall pointed to Guyana’s membership in a wide range of international and regional anti-corruption and financial integrity bodies as evidence of that commitment.

He said Guyana is a member of “every leading global and regional organisation whose mandate

aligns with anti-corruption pursuits.”

He listed the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption, the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF), the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI), the Commonwealth Caribbean Association of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies, and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units.

He also underscored the role of international oversight, explaining that Guyana “submits to regular reviews by international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.”

He said their assessments “have repeatedly recognised the continuous progress made by our government in improving Guyana’s anti-corruption credentials.”

Domestically, the Attorney-General outlined what he described as a strong framework of accountability and oversight.

“Guyana’s legislative and constitutional framework enshrines a robust regime of checks and balances which extracts from government, public offices, and state agencies a high level of accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law,” he told the conference.

Among the key pillars of that framework, Nandlall cited “an independent Auditor General office that audits the expenditure of public funds annually and presenting its report to a parliament.”

He also pointed to a statutory framework governing the receipt and expenditure of revenues generated from the petroleum sector with a broad-based administrative and parliamentary oversight.

He also highlighted “a public procurement process with oversights that presides over the award of contracts funded by public funds,” alongside “an independent

judiciary, and a free and critical press,” which, he said, together form part of Guyana’s “anti-corruption architecture.”

Turning to financial crimes, Nandlall noted that the United Nations Convention against Corruption places heavy emphasis on the anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism apparatus in individual member states.

In that context, he reported that Guyana recently underwent its fourth round of mutual evaluation by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force and “came out with flying colours.”

“Indeed, Guyana won an award in a case study done during the assessment,” he said, pointing to what he described as a landmark corruption case.

The Attorney-General said: “The case examined was that of a Deputy Commissioner of Police of Guyana [Calvin Brutus] slapped with over 300 criminal charges of corruption, the first of its kind in the Caribbean.”

In line with the Convention’s recommendations, Nandlall said Guyana has “already begun to place great emphasis on the detention and forfeiture of assets that are proceeds of crime or whose acquisition are tainted by illicit activities.”

He added: “We are firmly of the view that hitting the asset base of the criminals will be an effective weapon against organised crimes.”

The Attorney-General also highlighted Guyana’s cooperation with international partners in tackling cross-border crime.

“In recent years, Guyana has enhanced relations with regional and international partners in mutual assistance on criminal matters as well as extradition as part of our battle against cross-border crimes,” he said.

He disclosed that, at present, Guyana has acceded to an extradition request from the United States.

“As I speak, Guyana has acceded to an extradition

request from the Government of the United States of America to surrender two fugitive offenders [Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed], one of whom is a member of parliament, indicted in a US$50 million smuggling and money laundering conspiracy,” Nandlall told the gathering.

Looking ahead, he referenced a recent announcement by the Head of State aimed at strengthening institutional capacity.

The Attorney General further struck a note of resolve tempered by realism.

plished much in the fight against corruption, we recognise that it is a work in progress and committed we are to sedulously persevere with these efforts,” Nandlall said.

He added that Guyana continues “to welcome guidance and assistance from our regional and global partners.”

I also call publicly on more companies to engage with the Board of Industrial Training so that together we can [shape] and groom the future leaders of Guyana,” Minister Griffith stated.

Addressing the graduates, the minister highlighted the significance and sustainability of the apprenticeship programme, noting the growing demand for skilled labour across the country.

“Now more than ever, there is a need for craftsmanship. You have learned a trade, but it is so much more than that. You have been prepared with the competence and ability to transform not only your lives, but this en-

tire country. You can work anywhere in the region and gain employment in welding.

There is a demand for hundreds of welders across Guyana, and as development continues nationwide, the skills you have acquired over the last two years will be put to good use,” he said.

In delivering his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the Board of Industrial Training, Richard Maughn, noted that graduates of the programme are well-positioned to secure employment upon completion, due to the programme’s competency-based apprenticeship model.

“As an individual working on behalf of the Government of Guyana to ensure that quality training reaches all Guyanese, it was a privilege to work with the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation. I recall engaging with the Corporation a few years ago, and to now witness the success of this programme is truly encouraging,” Maughn said.

He further stressed that apprenticeship

programmes provide a high level of assurance that participants acquire the competencies required for the world of work, particularly within their specific occupational areas.

Maughn also encouraged graduates to remain appreciative and to give back to those who supported them throughout their training journey.

For the year 2025, a total of 314 persons benefited from apprenticeship programmes administered by the Board of Industrial Training.

Based on BIT’s experience, the apprenticeship model not only supports high employment outcomes, but also ensures that graduates are competent of performing effectively in their chosen occupations.

The event served as both a celebration of individual achievement and a reaffirmation of the strong partnership between BIT and DHBC in advancing national human capital development and supporting Guyana’s growing industrial sector.

Local NGO aims to support families in need, less fortunate children BRINGING cheer to those who are in need is Feed A Kid Charity, a non-government organisation (NGO) that is focused on supporting and providing aid to children and adults in Guyana.

Since November 11, 2025, the NGO has been collecting donations for its annual Christmas Toy Drive that is slated for December 23, 2025.

In an exclusive interview with this publication, the President of Feed A Kid Charity Lisa Mangroo and Vice-President, Akisha Joseph said prior to being a registered NGO, they both would pool their monies together and at the end of the month, they would give it to persons in need.

It was disclosed that it was from this initiative that they would start to work with children and adults as well.

Founded in 2017, the NGO hosts feeding programmes, an annual backto-school drive complete with supplies, clothing and hampers for parents.

According to Joseph, “What we started to do, of course, we registered as an NGO and we started reaching out to various organisations. Also, trying to put it on social media for even individuals at home, they can take part in giving back, because we know around this time.

It's nothing more exciting to see the kids happy, and gifts is [sic] not enough around the Christmas time.

So, we want to make sure those less fortunate, at least they get something to put a smile on their face [sic] on Christmas Day.” With distribution of these donations set for December 23, 2025 (next Tuesday), Joseph noted that this year is one of the biggest years, with more than 250 donations received from various persons and organisations.

“The response has been impactful, and of course, we're looking for more, be-

cause we believe, as I mentioned before, it's nothing more than enough toys on Christmas Day; it's bringing more gifts to the kids,” the vice-president shared.

Catering for families, in addition to accepting toys for children, they noted that they will be making hampers filled with clothing, food items, and other supplies to give to households that are in need.

This year, the target is between 200 to 400 persons, and donations will be given to persons in Tiger Bay, Albouystown, South Ruimveldt and Sophia among other places.

Stating that they are not limited to these areas, Joseph urged persons who may know of a family in need, to identify them so that the organisation can help.

Joseph said, “If the public out there know of a family in need or kids around that you know is [sic] in need, feel free to message us. You can post it on our walls, you can direct messages us, or you can even WhatsApp or call, and you can let us know about these families or kids and we will do our best to reach those areas or to that family.”

Similarly, if a family needs assistance, they too can reach out to the organisation and they will get assistance.

Noting that they are still accepting donations, the duo said persons desirous of donating a toy or items to the drive can do so by visiting the Facebook page: Feed A Kid Charity, or WhatsApp the organisation on 6242324 or 624-1799.

“We're looking to reach as many people as we can to help. This initiative is not just for the Christmas holiday, it's for Easter, it's for back to school. It's for any time during the year. If they feel the need to donate to the charity, we will find someone who we can

SRIS cameras detected hundreds of traffic offences last week - over 2,500 traffic offences recorded nationwide

MORE than 2,500 traffic-related offences were recorded across Guyana between December 7 and December 13, 2025, underscoring persistent challenges with road safety and driver compliance, according to data released by the Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department.

A total of 2,583 cases were documented during the reporting period, with speeding accounting for the highest number of violations.

Police records show that 600 speeding offences were detected, followed by 175 cases of leaving a motor vehicle in a dangerous position and 102 instances of riders failing to wear safety helmets.

Additional breaches included 89 cases of seatbelt violations, 74 tinted motor vehicle offences, and 78 and 70 cases of unlighted motor vehicles at the front and rear respectively.

Driving under the influence remained a concern, with 36 cases recorded,

Lectures and awareness sessions were held at police stations, community locations, bars, and along major roadways, including Golden Grove, Turkeyen, Fort Wellington, and Mabaruma Police Stations, as well as the

Linden–Soesdyke Highway, Sheriff Street in Georgetown, and communities in the North West District and Berbice.

Public engagement was further extended through outreach at commercial establishments, waterfront areas, and radio programmes broadcast from NCN in Georgetown and New Amsterdam.

In an invited comment, Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner, Mahendra Singh, said the enforcement drive remains focused on reducing dangerous driving behaviours, supported by the use of the Safe Road Intelligence System (SRIS) cameras.

“Aside from what is done daily to raise awareness, a strict focus is placed on

This approach will continue and be expanded into the divisions as more cameras are activated".

He noted that traffic enforcement is currently being coordinated from Traffic Headquarters and said there has been a noticeable shift in driver behaviour. According to Singh, many vehicle owners with multiple outstanding tickets are opting to pay their fines rather than face court

proceedings.

The police have reiterated that both enforcement and education will remain central to their road safety strategy, as authorities seek to reduce accidents and improve compliance with traffic laws nationwide.

Terron Wintz to lead New Amsterdam Boxing Academy at National Open Championships

C A R I B B E A N champion Terron Wintz is set to spearhead the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy’s challenge at the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Terrence Ali National Open Championships, scheduled for December 19–21, according to head coach Jeff Roberts.

Roberts expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to compete at a high level, pointing to a blend of youth, discipline, and growing experience within the academy.

“We have a solid team that I believe will give a very good account of themselves,” Roberts said, while singling out Wintz’ determination to further establish himself as the country’s leading welterweight (67kg).

Wintz, widely regarded as one of Guyana’s most promising young amateur boxers and an employee od Queensway Security, enjoyed a breakthrough year on the

regional stage.

Competing in St. Lucia, he captured gold at the Caribbean Championships and was also named Best Boxer in his division, a testament to his technical skill, composure, and ring intelligence.

The 19-year-old Berbician also claimed a title at the OECS Championships, again held in St. Lucia, where he was crowned the tournament’s Best Elite Boxer, further underlining his rapid rise and consistency at the international level.

The New Amsterdam Boxing Academy’s contingent will also feature 17-year-old Jofes Jackson, who will compete in the middleweight division, and 15-year-old Curt Mahase,

In the schoolboys divisions, Curtis McDonald will contest the lightweight class, while Ukesh Persaud, 13, will compete in the 31kg category. He will be joined by 14-year-old Richard Persaud, who is entered in the 45kg division, as the academy continues to invest in long-term development at the grassroots level.

Reflecting on the academy’s growth, Roberts noted that the New Amsterdam Boxing Academy is just two years old but has already made encouraging strides.

Lusignan Golf Club ends Patel, Blundell 2025 season with Festive return for third test Holiday Scramble

CMC – NEW ZEALAND has recalled spinner Ajaz Patel and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell to its squad for the decisive third Test against the West Indies, starting here on Wednesday at Bay Oval.

The changes come following a hard-fought second Test victory that gave the Black Caps a 1-0 lead in the series.

Patel replaces seamer Blair Tickner who dislocated his shoulder during that match, while Blundell returns after recovering from the hamstring tear that sidelined him for the second Test.

Blundell’s return sees debutant Mitch Hay released back to Canterbury for domestic cricket after a solitary appearance.

Head coach Rob Walter emphasised the value of

reinstating the experienced gloveman.

“Tom has recovered very well, and we’re grateful to have someone of his calibre back. His experience is invaluable, especially with several newer faces in our squad. He is a leader in the group, and we’re very pleased to see him back.”

The most intriguing selection, however, is that of left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel.

Named Player of the Match in his most recent Test appearance in November 2024, Patel is poised for his first home Test since February 2020.

Walter indicated the Bay Oval pitch, known for offering more turn than other New Zealand venues, played a key role in the decision.

“Ajaz is someone we can trust to come in and do a job if required. Bay Oval

has typically taken more turn, and the fact that he turns the ball away from the right-hander is very appealing. Taking another spinner gives us more variance in our bowling attack alongside our seamers, who have been outstanding this series.”

The remainder of the squad is unchanged from the group that secured the series lead. With the opening Test having ended in a tense draw, the Black Caps will be eager to clinch the series outright on home soil.

LUSIGNAN Golf Club (LGC) officially brought its 2025 competitive season to a close with the Annual Holiday Season Social and Partner Scramble NineHole Golf Tournament, held last Sunday in a lively Christmas-themed atmosphere that blended competitive golf with an end-ofyear celebration.

The tournament, played in a social-scramble format, welcomed members and their partners and served as the final sporting event on the club’s 2025 calendar. Festive décor, holiday attire, and camaraderie on the course added to the seasonal spirit, before participants gathered upstairs in the clubhouse for a well-attended Christmas social.

Top honours on the day were claimed by Carlos Adams and Gavin Todd, who emerged victorious with a

Gross score of 36, a Team Handicap of five, and the best Net score of 31.

They were closely followed by Romel Bhagwandin and Max Persaud (Gross 36, Team HC 4, Net 32) and Kevin Budram and Mahin Harry (Gross 35, Team HC 3, Net 32), underscoring the competitive edge that remained despite the relaxed holiday setting.

Also featuring among the leading teams were Brian Hackett and Patrick Prashad, who recorded a Net 33, while Imtiaz Subhan and Ayube Subhan finished with a Net 34.

Individual on-course prizes added further excitement, with Mike Mangal claiming nearest to the pin and Richard Haniff securing longest-drive honours.

ON Sunday Kwakwani Secondary, President’s College and the Government Technical Institute were the divisional winners of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) 14th Titan Bowl knockout Schools’ Basketball Competition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

After a flawless run up to the finals, Government Technical Institute had to dig in deep to seal the finals with a two-point win

over Saint Stanislaus College in the under 18 category 84-82.

GTI had an awesome outing from Jahiem Barnwell who scored 27 points with an outstanding 22 rebounds leading his side in offence and defence to collect the MVP award for his age group.

Kyrell Butters was equally as good with 19 points and 5 rebounds with 10 points each for Alwyn Adams and Sean Duncan.

showed his shooting prowess for his 27 points with great support from Kadeem Beckles (16) Demitri Crandon (13).

The under 14 group saw President’s College emerging as the top school with a five-point win over Marian Academy 32-27.

President’s College Terron Mohabir led with flair for his side with 17 points coupled with 12 rebounds to walkway with MVP honours.

Marian Academy for their part had 12 points and 10 rebounds from Lucas Pinol with Nehemiah Francois chipping in with 8 buckets. The girls’ division saw the continued dominance of champions Kwakwani Secondary who battered President’s College 31- 7 points.

Brianna Benjamin who has led her team offence, again stepped up in the finals with 14 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals to put them on course for victory.

She didn’t do it alone as Lanasha Mohamed also contributed 15 points in the win.

On the losing side Kaycia Mc Laggen was President’s College’s best scorer with 4 Points and 4 Rebounds.

Archery Guyana delivers Wellness & Nutrition seminar for athletes and coaches

ARCHERY Guyana successfully hosted its Wellness & Nutrition in Archery Seminar at Olympic House, Liliendaal, on Monday, 15th December, 2025.

The seminar brought together approximately 65 participants from the Federation and 10 affiliated clubs for a comprehensive, athlete-focused learning experience.

In her welcoming r e m a r k s , Vi d u s h i P e rsaud-McKinnon, President of Archery Guyana, emphasised that while archery is a sport of precision, discipline, and mental control, optimal performance is rooted in physical wellness, mental resilience, injury prevention, and proper nutrition. She noted that the seminar forms part of the federation’s broader strategy to promote holistic athlete development as the sport continues to grow nationally and regionally.

THE Guyana Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation on Sunday launched its Senior National Bodybuilding Championship at Olympic House, Liliendaal.

The senior championship, dubbed Mr Guyana, is set for Sunday December 21st at the National Cultural Centre.

The competition is set to see the ultimate battle of strength, power, and physique as Guyana’s top athletes go head-to-head for the prestigious Mr. Guyana title.

President of the Guyana Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation Roger Callender says a number of local athletes are already registered.

“All the athletes are pumped and ready for this year’s clash of the titans ‘Mr Guyana 2025.’ It is set to be one of the best Mr Guyana we ever had, we have an amazing trophy that we are giving out to the top athlete.

We have over 30 athletes currently, so at the final registration day which is the

weigh-in day on the 20th of December then we will have a final total of how many athletes, it is looking like we might have over 35 to 40 athletes,” the GBBFF boss said.

He also outlined the monetary prizes they are set to payout to winners, adding, “We are giving out $300,000 to the Mr Guyana champion, we have bikini overall $200,000 and Mr physique overall $200,000 along with other incentives to be given out by different sponsors with

some surprises in store for athletes.” New categories this year are Fit Model categories for both male and female, and the Kids Fitness categories.

The other categories are Men’s Bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Women’s Bikini, Women’s Wellness, Men’s Fitness as well as Masters and Junior categories.

Interested athletes can register at Space Gym 2.0, Fitness Express and Unity Gym. Admission to the event is $2,500.

TOP swimmer Ariel Rodrigues on Sunday showed her growing pedigree by clinching her third gold medal in the girls 100m backstroke at the ASATT invitational meet in Trinidad and Tobago.

The club championship was hosted by the Marlins Swim Club.

Local swimmer Rodrigues took gold with a new national record time of 1 minute 09.71 seconds, lowering the previous record of 1 minute 11.49 seconds.

She also claimed gold medals in the 50m and 200m back strokes earlier in the competition. She also captured bronze in the 50m freestyle with a time of 27.88 seconds on Sunday to be crowned the best girls 15 and over in the back strokes.

Her compatriot Shareefah Lewis took silver in the girl’s 50m freestyle with a blistering 27.49 seconds, with Olympian Aleka Persaud taking fourth place in 27.92

seconds Guyana also took gold, with team Dorado made up of Elissa Thompson-Shipley, Duru Gokal, Makayla Tuma, and Zafirah Hackett winning in the Girls 400m Freestyle Relay and finished second in the 200m medley relay.

Overall, the Guyanese club finished with nine medals at the four-day meet with ORCA capturing three gold and a bronze, compliments of Rodrigues.

Dorado took two medals in the relays, while Sea Otter’s Shareefa Lewis took bronze and Paul Mahaica jr won a silver and gold medal.

The competition ran from December 11-14 and featured several local clubs competing for top honors.

This meet was sanctioned by World Aquatics and is the meet of choice for many athletes seeking qualification for the Olympics, World Championships, and other major international events.

Barbados beat Guyana by seven wickets for first win

By Sean Devers BARBADOS beat Guyana by three wickets in the third match of the fivegame series of the 40-over U-13 series between the two countries.

The series is 2-1 in favour of the home team with yesterday’s match being played at the Lusignan ground.

Watched by a sizeable gathering of mostly mothers of the Bajans, who were engaged in a flag-waving battle with the Guyanese supporters. Guyana batted first on a good track and reached 111-8 from their allotted overs.

Barbados then reached 112-7 with two overs to spare.

New Skipper Shid Gajnabi won the toss and batted first. Without some of its first-choice players, including their best batter, Lomar Secharran, Guyana lost their first three batters for just six runs. Seecharran, with big 50s in the first two games, were among the players rested to allow new players to gain experience.

Khan was run out for 39 from 96 balls with a couple of boundaries at 96-5 before Tyler Nedd (0) was lbw to Anahri Hinds at 98-6.

F R U TA C o n q u e r o r s on Sunday bagged a much-needed victory when they clashed with Camptown FC in the Guyana F o o t b a l l F e d e r a t i o n ’s (GFF) Super 16 Cup played at the National Training Centre at Providence.

Fruta’s Shondell Antoine gave the Tucville side restored equilibrium in the game just before the break in response to Camptown’s Joseph Harry’s opener in the 20th minute.

Oziel Small’s 84th minute strike broke the deadlock and handed Conquerors the victory 2-1.

The day’s other match-up saw West Coast side Zeelugt Defenders defeating Beacon FC. Quano Fraser got the ball rolling in the 6th minute of play before Johnny Basanta scored back-to-back goals in the 18th and 20th minutes to make it 3-1.
